- 0:02Speaker: You are listening to Stories from Väruld.
- 0:05Speaker: In this episode is a journal entry.
- 0:08Speaker: Marriage and Fire Dance.
- 0:10Speaker: The road passing through Ödkna wilderness from Kanohi Ambash to Fälla is barely any road in some places.
- 0:21Speaker: Neither Kanohi nor Gulhuva cares about it.
- 0:24Speaker: It is a shame when travelers may get lost traveling on the road.
- 0:29Speaker: I had never been to Fälla before and had the honor of arriving in time for a wedding.
- 0:34Speaker: There was a gathering of people in the village square.
- 0:38Speaker: There the bride and the groom were standing on a dais, while every present relative of the two declared that they accepted the union of the couple.
- 0:47Speaker: When that was done, the two were married.
- 0:51Speaker: I asked one what would happen if a relative disapproved.
- 0:55Speaker: She said it was not a matter of approval or disapproval, but confirming that the family members knew about it.
- 1:03Speaker: The festivities afterward included one of the more spectacular dances I have ever seen.
- 1:10Speaker: A vast firebed, built as a square, had been prepared, and a fire burned during the meal served.
- 1:19Speaker: As it grew darker, the fire became ember, glowing red and hot.
- 1:24Speaker: They even used bellows from the smithy to raise the temperature.
- 1:29Speaker: Finally, the coal was evened out in the square with a rake.
- 1:33Speaker: The heat was smoldering.
- 1:36Speaker: The village elders started to drum, an intense, fast beat.
- 1:42Speaker: Others joined with more resounding drums, making the mere ground vibrate.
- 1:48Speaker: Then, a young woman jumped up on the ember.
- 1:52Speaker: At first I thought, I don't know what I thought.
- 1:57Speaker: More than she must be insane.
- 1:59Speaker: But she danced on the soldering hot coal, tripping feet and high jumps, touching the heat as little as possible.
- 2:07Speaker: Always on the move she was.
- 2:09Speaker: Soon she was not alone.
- 2:13Speaker: Young men and women joined her.
- 2:15Speaker: As they were coordinated, it was obviously moves well practiced.
- 2:20Speaker: They did not dance for long at a time, but there were always eager people to replace those who got off.
- 2:27Speaker: I learned that this dance is for those who have yet to marry.
- 2:32Speaker: The idea was to impress.
- 2:34Speaker: However, over generations, more than those without a partner can join, just because they found the liking for the dance.
- 2:42Speaker: As their dancing floor was hot, they were all sweating buckloads.
- 2:47Speaker: The smell of ember and sweat was peculiar.
- 2:50Speaker: It was not like a smithy at all.
- 2:52Speaker: On the contrary, the situation helped to make the air erotic.
- 2:57Speaker: Thank you for listening to Stories from Väruld. In the next episode the Hissing Hoodoos.
