- 0:00Speaker 1: Let us pray. When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar,
- 0:05Speaker 1: he said, It is finished. And he bowed his head
- 0:10Speaker 1: and gave up the ghost. John 19.30 Thank you, Jesus,
- 0:17Speaker 1: for carrying your cross up the hill. When my moment comes,
- 0:22Speaker 1: I will be like Simon, and I will take the
- 0:25Speaker 1: weight of your cross upon my life until I complete
- 0:29Speaker 1: my mission here on earth. reflecting on the most holy
- 0:33Speaker 1: of moments. Like Jesus, I give my life to you, God,
- 0:38Speaker 1: as a living sacrifice. May you use my life to
- 0:43Speaker 1: bring your name glory as long as I am breathing.
- 0:49Speaker 1: In the same way that Jesus brought hope to the
- 0:51Speaker 1: thief on the cross in the midst of his pain,
- 0:55Speaker 1: so too will I bring hope to others, even when
- 0:59Speaker 1: I feel the burden of life's challenges. I will remember
- 1:04Speaker 1: that the greatest act of devotion to you, God, is
- 1:07Speaker 1: to bring people into the knowledge of your saving grace
- 1:11Speaker 1: and forgiveness. Through your death and burial, Jesus, you put
- 1:17Speaker 1: into action the greatest chess play in all the cosmos.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Through your death and burial, you have given us the
- 1:25Speaker 1: ultimate checkmate over Satan and his plans. The best is
- 1:31Speaker 1: yet to come. In Jesus' name. Amen. Thank you for
- 1:39Speaker 1: praying with us today. Continue your time with God by

- 1:56Speaker 2: Jesus' Death and Burial In our last story, Jesus was
- 2:01Speaker 2: taken before Pilate and brutally beaten. The crowd demanded Jesus
- 2:06Speaker 2: be crucified. Pilate, who knew Jesus was innocent, washed his
- 2:11Speaker 2: hands clean and released Jesus to be crucified. In this story,
- 2:15Speaker 2: we will learn about the death and burial of Jesus
- 2:19Speaker 2: as inspired by the Gospels.
- 2:24Speaker 3: Hello, Jack Graham here with today's episode of The Bible
- 2:27Speaker 3: in a Year. In our previous episode, we heard how
- 2:30Speaker 3: Jesus went before Pilate, the Roman ruler, and though no
- 2:34Speaker 3: fault was found in him, the religious leaders clamored for
- 2:37Speaker 3: his death, insisting that Pilate send him to the cross
- 2:41Speaker 3: and release a criminal named Barabbas. Jesus was beaten, humiliated, mocked, tortured,
- 2:48Speaker 3: yet he remained silent, willing to fulfill God's purpose for
- 2:52Speaker 3: his life. Today we'll hear as Jesus goes to the
- 2:55Speaker 3: cross and the final words that he says as the
- 2:58Speaker 3: sin of the world bears its full weight on his shoulders.
- 3:02Speaker 3: So let's listen now to the reading of God's word.
- 3:07Speaker 2: The day grew dim and clouds began filling the skies.
- 3:11Speaker 2: Jesus was given a cross to carry up the trail
- 3:14Speaker 2: of Calvary. A hundred pound piece of wood carving a
- 3:18Speaker 2: deeper hole into his already exposed back. Jesus carried his
- 3:22Speaker 2: cross up the hill towards the place he would die.
- 3:26Speaker 2: After losing blood and oxygen, Jesus collapsed to the ground
- 3:30Speaker 2: with the cross. Unable to carry it himself, a soldier
- 3:33Speaker 2: took a man named Simon from the crowd and had
- 3:36Speaker 2: him carry Christ's cross for him up the hill. Some
- 3:40Speaker 2: cried for his death. Others cried to not have him die.
- 3:45Speaker 2: Thousands of people followed Jesus up that hill to watch
- 3:48Speaker 2: him be crucified. Many mourned for him that day. Yet
- 3:52Speaker 2: underneath the blood and sweat, Jesus walked with joy towards
- 3:56Speaker 2: the cross, knowing what it would accomplish. Legs trembling, blood dripping,
- 4:02Speaker 2: and lungs gasping for air, Jesus made his way to
- 4:05Speaker 2: the place of the skull where he would be crucified.
- 4:08Speaker 2: Soldiers grabbed him and laid him down onto the cross.
- 4:12Speaker 2: One by one they hammered nails into his wrists and feet.
- 4:16Speaker 2: and raised the cross up high for everyone to behold
- 4:20Speaker 2: his suffering. Crucifixion was designed to be a slow and
- 4:24Speaker 2: painful death. For hours men would gasp for air by
- 4:28Speaker 2: pulling up on their feet and wrists that had nails
- 4:30Speaker 2: driven through them. Slowly, Jesus began to breathe and look
- 4:35Speaker 2: upon the crowd. And the people stood by watching. But
- 4:40Speaker 2: the rulers scoffed at him, saying, He saved others, let
- 4:43Speaker 2: him save himself, if he is truly Christ. The soldiers
- 4:48Speaker 2: also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine
- 4:52Speaker 2: and saying, If you are the king of the Jews,
- 4:55Speaker 2: save yourself. Jesus prayed, Father, forgive them. They do not
- 5:03Speaker 2: know what they are doing. The soldiers took his clothes
- 5:06Speaker 2: and divided it up between them by casting lots, which
- 5:10Speaker 2: fulfilled the prophecy that said that they would do so.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Pilate had a sign made in Aramaic, Latin, and Greek,
- 5:20Speaker 2: so that all the people can read it walking by,
- 5:23Speaker 2: which says, Jesus, the King of Jews. This disturbed the Jews,
- 5:28Speaker 2: yet Pilate would not remove it. Jesus' cross was placed
- 5:32Speaker 2: beside two thieves. One mocked Jesus, saying, Are you not
- 5:37Speaker 2: the Christ? Save yourself and us if you are so powerful.
- 5:42Speaker 2: But the other thief swiftly rebuked him, saying, Have you
- 5:45Speaker 2: no fear of God? We are getting what we deserve
- 5:48Speaker 2: hanging here, yet this man has done nothing wrong. Jesus, please,
- 5:54Speaker 2: remember me when you enter into your kingdom. Jesus answered
- 5:58Speaker 2: and said to him, Truly, today you will be with
- 6:02Speaker 2: me in paradise. Jesus then looked down toward his mother,
- 6:09Speaker 2: who was sobbing inconsolably. Jesus, in one of his final acts,
- 6:13Speaker 2: turned to John and said, one of his most beloved disciples,
- 6:17Speaker 2: and said, Son, behold your mother. And he charged John
- 6:22Speaker 2: to look after his mother. Darkness had now enveloped the
- 6:26Speaker 2: skies completely, as if preparing for what was about to occur.
- 6:31Speaker 2: Nine hours had passed on the cross, and Jesus looked
- 6:35Speaker 2: up to heaven. Eloi! Eloi! Lema sabachthani! He cried, which means,
- 6:42Speaker 2: My God! My God, why have you forsaken me? For
- 6:47Speaker 2: in that moment the eternal bond between the Father and
- 6:49Speaker 2: the Son was severed, and the sins of all mankind
- 6:53Speaker 2: were thrust onto Jesus as a tsunami does to the shore.
- 6:57Speaker 2: Then Jesus yelled out one more time, Father, I give
- 7:02Speaker 2: you my life. It is now finished. Then he gave
- 7:07Speaker 2: his spirit to the Lord, the one who with a
- 7:10Speaker 2: word spoke light and life into existence, spoke his final word.
- 7:16Speaker 2: The same lungs that breathed life into mankind in the
- 7:19Speaker 2: Garden of Eden exhaled their final breath. Immediately, the curtain
- 7:25Speaker 2: that hung in the temple was torn in half, symbolizing
- 7:28Speaker 2: the tearing of Jesus' flesh, removing separation from man and
- 7:32Speaker 2: God forever. The ground began to shake and the skies
- 7:36Speaker 2: poured forth rain. Rocks were split in half and for
- 7:40Speaker 2: a moment the dead walked among the earth in darkness.
- 7:44Speaker 2: The earth itself was mourning the death of its creator.
- 7:48Speaker 2: A Roman commander saw these things happen and gasped in awe. Truly,
- 7:54Speaker 2: this man was the Son of God, he said. After
- 7:58Speaker 2: the chaos had passed, they brought Jesus down from the cross.
- 8:02Speaker 2: The Jewish leaders did not want the bodies to be
- 8:05Speaker 2: left up during the Sabbath, so they asked Pilate to
- 8:08Speaker 2: let the bodies be taken down. They took the criminals down,
- 8:13Speaker 2: broke their legs, and then moved on to Jesus. It
- 8:16Speaker 2: was obvious that he was dead. So they instead pierced
- 8:19Speaker 2: him with a spear, and blood and water came out
- 8:22Speaker 2: of his body. This fulfilled the scripture that Jesus' bones
- 8:26Speaker 2: would not be broken. And another scripture states that his
- 8:30Speaker 2: body will be pierced. Joseph, a wealthy follower of Jesus,
- 8:35Speaker 2: asked Pilate for his body. He feared the Jewish leaders,
- 8:39Speaker 2: so when Pilate agreed, he took the body quickly. Nicodemus
- 8:44Speaker 2: brought myrrh and aloes, and they both wrapped his body
- 8:46Speaker 2: with these elements and linen. They then placed Jesus in
- 8:50Speaker 2: a new tomb that no one had ever been in
- 8:53Speaker 2: near a garden. This was the day of preparation, and
- 8:57Speaker 2: because the tomb was close, they placed Jesus there. In
- 9:01Speaker 2: the darkness of the tomb, the Son of Man laid
- 9:04Speaker 2: his head. His followers, the city, and the whole earth
- 9:09Speaker 2: were in mourning. Sadness gripped the hearts of all who
- 9:12Speaker 2: loved him. And grief overcame them for a short while.
- 9:17Speaker 2: There was no knowledge of what was yet to come.
- 9:24Speaker 3: In today's reading, Jesus is walking the way of the cross.
- 9:28Speaker 3: It's known now as the Via Dolorosa. With the beam
- 9:32Speaker 3: of the cross on which he was to die weighing
- 9:34Speaker 3: heavily on his shoulders, Jesus walked towards Calvary. His body
- 9:39Speaker 3: was already beaten and bloodied, and now he was forced
- 9:41Speaker 3: to carry the symbol of guilt and shame through a
- 9:44Speaker 3: city with people yelling and screaming and spitting at him. Finally,
- 9:49Speaker 3: the Lord collapses under the weight of the cross, and
- 9:51Speaker 3: a man named Simon was pulled from the crowd and
- 9:54Speaker 3: made to carry the wooden beam the rest of the way.
- 9:57Speaker 3: Jesus knew what awaited him when he arrived at the
- 10:00Speaker 3: place called Golgotha, the place of the skull. Death would
- 10:04Speaker 3: not come quickly or without pain. A crucifixion could last
- 10:08Speaker 3: for hours, even days. His body would endure indescribable pain,
- 10:14Speaker 3: but that would pale in comparison to the spiritual pain
- 10:17Speaker 3: that he experienced on the cross. And yet Jesus continued
- 10:22Speaker 3: step by step to accomplish God's plan of salvation for
- 10:27Speaker 3: the world. He came to die to rise again that
- 10:30Speaker 3: we might have eternal life. When he finally arrived at
- 10:34Speaker 3: the hill called Calvary, Jesus, the perfect Lamb of God,
- 10:38Speaker 3: was laid on the cross, arms open wide, and nailed
- 10:41Speaker 3: down by his wrists and feet. The soldiers were experts
- 10:46Speaker 3: in keeping people alive, to expose them to the maximum
- 10:49Speaker 3: amount of suffering. This was all described as a deterrent
- 10:54Speaker 3: for other criminals. As Jesus was raised above the crowd,
- 10:58Speaker 3: his weight hung on the nails, his flayed back rubbed
- 11:01Speaker 3: against the rough-hewn wood of the cross, and he struggled
- 11:05Speaker 3: even to lift himself to take the next breath. The
- 11:08Speaker 3: way a person died on a Roman cross was by suffocation,
- 11:13Speaker 3: drowning in one's own fluids. Raised up above the crowds,
- 11:17Speaker 3: Jesus watched as the people mocked him even more, telling
- 11:21Speaker 3: him to draw upon the powers of God and to
- 11:23Speaker 3: save himself. The soldiers joined in the insults, showing no
- 11:26Speaker 3: regard for his suffering. This was cruel beyond imagination. And yet,
- 11:31Speaker 3: as he looked on those who put him there, the
- 11:33Speaker 3: Roman soldiers, the crowds of people, even the religious leaders
- 11:37Speaker 3: who conspired to have him killed, his heart was not
- 11:40Speaker 3: filled with anger or rage or hate, but indescribable and
- 11:45Speaker 3: intense love and forgiveness. He prays, asking God to forgive them,
- 11:51Speaker 3: for they did not know what they were doing. This
- 11:54Speaker 3: was the end of the long road Jesus had walked,
- 11:57Speaker 3: the culmination of his earthly purpose. He had known all
- 12:01Speaker 3: along that many who once flocked to see him would
- 12:03Speaker 3: turn away and that he would face death alone. Even
- 12:07Speaker 3: his disciples would leave him. Still, he went there willingly
- 12:12Speaker 3: to die for you and me, We heard how there
- 12:16Speaker 3: were two men next to him, two convicted thieves, criminals
- 12:20Speaker 3: who were not innocent. They were receiving their due penalty.
- 12:24Speaker 3: One joined the mockers, failing to see Jesus for who
- 12:27Speaker 3: he truly was. But one of the thieves, one of
- 12:29Speaker 3: the men surrendered his life to Jesus, asking him to
- 12:33Speaker 3: remember him when he entered his kingdom. This man had
- 12:37Speaker 3: no time left. No works could earn him God's favor
- 12:40Speaker 3: or salvation. There was no church to join. There was
- 12:44Speaker 3: no religious rites to perform. He was moments away from death,
- 12:48Speaker 3: hopeless and helpless. And yet, because he turned to Jesus
- 12:52Speaker 3: by faith, he heard Jesus reassured him of his eternal
- 12:56Speaker 3: hope and home in heaven. Today, you will be with
- 12:59Speaker 3: me in paradise. What happened to this thief on the
- 13:03Speaker 3: cross reminds us that it's never too late for a
- 13:06Speaker 3: new beginning and that there is nothing we can do
- 13:10Speaker 3: to earn or deserve our salvations. but to put our
- 13:13Speaker 3: lives in the nail-scarred hands of Jesus, that he and
- 13:17Speaker 3: he alone can pardon us from our sins. Even in
- 13:21Speaker 3: his moments of pain and suffering, Jesus, the glorious Savior,
- 13:27Speaker 3: the good shepherd, continued to look upon those that he loved.
- 13:31Speaker 3: He charged his disciple John with the care of Mary,
- 13:33Speaker 3: his mother. As darkness descended on the land, Jesus knew
- 13:38Speaker 3: there was still an even greater pain to face. The
- 13:41Speaker 3: Lamb of God who came to take away the sins
- 13:43Speaker 3: of the world felt the full weight of our sin
- 13:46Speaker 3: on his back. And in that moment, he who knew
- 13:49Speaker 3: no sin, according to the Bible, became sin for us,
- 13:53Speaker 3: that we might be made the righteousness of God. Every
- 13:58Speaker 3: wrong thought, every action, impulse, desire, sinful desire of every
- 14:03Speaker 3: man and woman who has ever lived and who will
- 14:05Speaker 3: ever live, was poured on Jesus that day as he
- 14:09Speaker 3: hung upon the cross. His fellowship, perfect fellowship with the Father,
- 14:14Speaker 3: was broken in that moment, and he cried out these
- 14:17Speaker 3: words that we find in Mark 15, verse 34, My God,
- 14:21Speaker 3: my God, why have you forsaken me? He was speaking
- 14:25Speaker 3: the words of Psalm 22, and even in those words,
- 14:28Speaker 3: as Christ acknowledged God's holiness, he was professing his trust
- 14:32Speaker 3: in his heavenly Father. Finally, Jesus gave up his spirit
- 14:36Speaker 3: and breathed his last breath. It was finally finished. He
- 14:40Speaker 3: cried out, It is finished, which means accomplished, paid in full.
- 14:45Speaker 3: Tetelestai is the word in the language of the Bible.
- 14:49Speaker 3: Christ paid in full the debt of sin that we
- 14:52Speaker 3: owed so that we could have eternal life. Our debt
- 14:56Speaker 3: was paid in full. Jesus paid it all. At that moment,
- 15:01Speaker 3: the curtain in the temple, a symbol of The separation
- 15:04Speaker 3: between man and God was torn from top to bottom.
- 15:07Speaker 3: God himself had removed the great chasm, the barrier between
- 15:10Speaker 3: himself and those created for himself. It was in that
- 15:15Speaker 3: moment that Christ had come. It was for this moment,
- 15:19Speaker 3: this miracle, that Christ had come. And now his purpose
- 15:22Speaker 3: is fulfilled. The plan of salvation is complete. Satan is defeated.
- 15:29Speaker 3: and salvation is now offered to all who believe and
- 15:32Speaker 3: trust in Christ. As Jesus' body was laid to rest
- 15:36Speaker 3: by the few that had remained to care for him,
- 15:39Speaker 3: there was one great enemy yet to be defeated, and
- 15:42Speaker 3: that is death. He would conquer death. There is grave
- 15:46Speaker 3: sadness on that dark Friday and on that silent Saturday,
- 15:50Speaker 3: but a joyous day was coming soon. A resurrection is promised.
- 15:56Speaker 3: Dear God, we can never get over your love for
- 15:59Speaker 3: us and what you endured for us that we might
- 16:03Speaker 3: have your love and grace, salvation, and eternal life. We
- 16:07Speaker 3: will praise you forever, dear Lamb of God, for all
- 16:10Speaker 3: that you have done for us and continue to do
- 16:12Speaker 3: for us. We remember that it is by your blood
- 16:16Speaker 3: that we have redemption, salvation, and eternal life. So we
- 16:21Speaker 3: trust in you. And just let me say to all
- 16:24Speaker 3: who are listening right now, If there's never been a
- 16:27Speaker 3: moment in your life when you have invited Jesus to
- 16:31Speaker 3: be your Lord and Savior, this is your moment. This
- 16:34Speaker 3: can be your miracle. He died for you. He rose again.
- 16:39Speaker 3: The Bible says, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and
- 16:42Speaker 3: you will be saved, which means that all your sins
- 16:45Speaker 3: are forgiven, past, present, and future, that Christ is alive
- 16:49Speaker 3: in you and that you have the hope of eternal
- 16:51Speaker 3: life now and forever, that you will be with him
- 16:54Speaker 3: in heaven when he comes for you. So place your
- 16:57Speaker 3: faith and trust in Jesus now by receiving him, repenting
- 17:02Speaker 3: of your sin, turning to him and trusting in him
- 17:05Speaker 3: as your Lord and Savior. God bless you.
