Transcript
- 0:16Speaker 1: Welcome to jag Zam. I'm Kindannie Stevens, Brian Sexton, and
- 0:18Speaker 1: John Oser are with me as we have our final
- 0:20Speaker 1: show of the off season. The off season program is
- 0:23Speaker 1: wrapping up and before we know it, it's going to
- 0:25Speaker 1: be time for training camps. Let's go over our big
- 0:27Speaker 1: things today, our final three, and the first one is
- 0:30Speaker 1: switch up. Because they did manageory mini camp last week,
- 0:33Speaker 1: they still have a couple of days of OTAs here
- 0:35Speaker 1: in Jacksonville and Coach Theam Cohen talked a little bit
- 0:37Speaker 1: about switching things up.
- 0:39Speaker 2: I hadn't really, it was something that.
- 0:42Speaker 3: Kind of came up organically over the winter time. I
- 0:46Speaker 3: believe just when we made the decision to swap mini
- 0:50Speaker 3: camp dates, that was kind of when the wheel started
- 0:55Speaker 3: churning as to what can we do creatively for the
- 0:58Speaker 3: last few days of of offseason program, to where maybe
- 1:02Speaker 3: these guys are going to get somebody else's voice, you know,
- 1:06Speaker 3: listening to and just being around other guys. I think,
- 1:10Speaker 3: you know, once we demark squirrel be here later. I'm
- 1:12Speaker 3: a Hall of Fame pass rusher. We're trying to improve
- 1:15Speaker 3: in areas in which hopefully that can help provide some
- 1:18Speaker 3: of that.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Brian's part of the switch up is some veteran players,
- 1:23Speaker 1: retired players coming in talking to the guys and three
- 1:26Speaker 1: familiar ones here today.
- 1:28Speaker 4: Yeah, it's great to see Marseiges Lewis back here. It's
- 1:30Speaker 4: been too long and he's one of those guys that
- 1:33Speaker 4: I think his name belongs to the Pride at some
- 1:35Speaker 4: point in time. He's one hundred and seventy starts in
- 1:38Speaker 4: a Jaguars uniform. But here's what I love is that
- 1:40Speaker 4: they're always thinking about small ways to get better.
- 1:43Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:44Speaker 4: The big ways you think about are you know, how
- 1:46Speaker 4: you build the facilities for a football team and how
- 1:48Speaker 4: you construct the roster in the salary cap.
- 1:50Speaker 5: But it's built in the.
- 1:53Speaker 4: Boring and the routine that you find these habits, in
- 1:55Speaker 4: these details that take a team from being good to
- 1:58Speaker 4: being great. And little thing, or it seems like a
- 2:00Speaker 4: little thing that you bring a couple guys in and
- 2:02Speaker 4: let them spend the week, but it could pay off
- 2:05Speaker 4: down the line. It could pay off in November of
- 2:07Speaker 4: this season that guys were able to get something. These
- 2:10Speaker 4: guys are innovators and this is a really cool way
- 2:15Speaker 4: to make the most of a week where most people
- 2:17Speaker 4: would be thinking about I only have two more days
- 2:19Speaker 4: for him out for five weeks, so I really liked it.
- 2:22Speaker 6: Yeah, the switch up was interesting. You put the mandatory
- 2:25Speaker 6: it's usually the last thing. They moved it up to
- 2:28Speaker 6: last week. And I think it's something to do with
- 2:29Speaker 6: sort of the NFL body clock. You know, they're usually
- 2:32Speaker 6: done by June eleventh or twelfth, and now it's the
- 2:35Speaker 6: seventeenth and the sixteenth before you get done. So I
- 2:38Speaker 6: think Liam wanted to make these last few days interesting.
- 2:41Speaker 6: Remember way way back when when I was in elementary school,
- 2:44Speaker 6: which was in the you know, eighteen fifties, it was
- 2:47Speaker 6: hard in that last two or three days to concentrate.
- 2:50Speaker 7: You're ready to get out and go play. These are
- 2:52Speaker 7: big kids who played this game.
- 2:54Speaker 6: Thank Liam sort of wanted to keep their attention in
- 2:57Speaker 6: these last few days. And by the way, if he
- 3:02Speaker 6: listened to Fred Taylor, Mays, Jones, Drew and Mercedes Lewis,
- 3:05Speaker 6: you just might learn something young fellas a.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Couple of nuggets I think they might be able to
- 3:09Speaker 1: share for sure. Let's go to our second big thing today,
- 3:11Speaker 1: which is keeping it real. We got to speak with
- 3:13Speaker 1: all of the assistant coaches yesterday and we'll hear from
- 3:16Speaker 1: them throughout the show, but one of the bigger changes
- 3:19Speaker 1: in the off season obviously running back TRAVESYTM moving on
- 3:22Speaker 1: to New Orleans that revamps the entire running back room
- 3:25Speaker 1: and running backs coach had Moreton talked about the motivation
- 3:28Speaker 1: he has with his new players.
- 3:31Speaker 5: Him leaving like I missed him to depth.
- 3:33Speaker 4: I mean just amount of time I spent with him,
- 3:36Speaker 4: his grow than like what we're able to do for him.
- 3:38Speaker 7: And you know, he's able to get.
- 3:40Speaker 8: Life changing money and opportunity, like there's I've been I'm
- 3:44Speaker 8: so proud of that.
- 3:44Speaker 3: But like I told him too, we don't we don't
- 3:47Speaker 3: do better than you, Like that's our goal, right, I
- 3:50Speaker 3: told him that, Like we're.
- 3:51Speaker 9: Gonna put him, try to put a better numbers than you,
- 3:53Speaker 9: have more success, like outrush you.
- 3:56Speaker 5: That's just how we are. We're all competitive.
- 3:59Speaker 3: But like that's the fun point of like having a
- 4:00Speaker 3: new group, Like oh yeah, we're trying to crush you
- 4:03Speaker 3: and we're trying to have people forget about you.
- 4:05Speaker 7: That's the best part.
- 4:07Speaker 1: And nope, we'll forget about Etna anytime soon. But certainly
- 4:09Speaker 1: the motivation there for coach Morton to try to get
- 4:13Speaker 1: this new group, which includes you know, two second year
- 4:16Speaker 1: players and Chris Rodriguez, another player's familiar with, into a
- 4:19Speaker 1: dominant running game for this offense.
- 4:21Speaker 6: Yeah, and I think that was sort of the vibe
- 4:23Speaker 6: yesterday when you asked different coaches who are all involved
- 4:27Speaker 6: with the offense putting together the run game.
- 4:30Speaker 7: Uh.
- 4:30Speaker 6: Look, Traves Etn was a great player for this team
- 4:34Speaker 6: and made a lot of big plays. I have never
- 4:36Speaker 6: this offseason since any worry about the running game. They're
- 4:41Speaker 6: really intrigued and optimistic about the efficiency with how Chris
- 4:46Speaker 6: Rodriguez runs, uh, Bachelle Tuton explosiveness.
- 4:50Speaker 7: I don't know who will be the number one back.
- 4:51Speaker 6: I don't know if they need a number one back,
- 4:53Speaker 6: but I know that they feel like they are going
- 4:55Speaker 6: to be a more efficient running game. Meeting on first
- 4:58Speaker 6: down then get thirty.
- 5:00Speaker 7: Five yards two and two.
- 5:02Speaker 6: I think they think they're going to get a lot
- 5:03Speaker 6: of four or five six yard games be in front
- 5:06Speaker 6: of the chains. It's a subtle difference, Brian, but the
- 5:11Speaker 6: way they run their offense, there's a lot of confidence
- 5:13Speaker 6: and what's going to happen at that position.
- 5:15Speaker 4: You know, they were as good as they were going
- 5:17Speaker 4: to get with the style that they had with Travis
- 5:20Speaker 4: Etn and thirteen touchdowns last year. I was on the
- 5:24Speaker 4: show in training camp saying I thought.
- 5:25Speaker 5: He was going to have a huge season.
- 5:27Speaker 4: He was one of my MVPs when the season was over,
- 5:29Speaker 4: a lot of admiration for him. But when you talk
- 5:32Speaker 4: about being efficient, when you talk about being better, it
- 5:35Speaker 4: isn't that you're going to run for more yards or
- 5:38Speaker 4: even a higher yard per carry average, but they'd like that.
- 5:42Speaker 5: It's that you need to.
- 5:43Speaker 4: Be able to run when you want to run, and
- 5:46Speaker 4: that hasn't been the case around here for a couple
- 5:48Speaker 4: of years. And Travis Etn is not that kind of
- 5:50Speaker 4: a back, So bringing in a Chris Rodriguez to pair
- 5:53Speaker 4: with an explosive back seems to make more sense than
- 5:56Speaker 4: anything else.
- 5:57Speaker 5: So I think they'll be better, even.
- 5:58Speaker 4: If all the numbers are necessarily greater, better.
- 6:03Speaker 1: As a collective for sure. Our final big thing today
- 6:05Speaker 1: is going to be staying ready, because of course this
- 6:08Speaker 1: is the final off season program, and then they'll be
- 6:10Speaker 1: back in late July for training camp. Trevor Lawrence talked
- 6:13Speaker 1: about staying ready and carrying over, continue.
- 6:16Speaker 10: To build off of what we started here. I know
- 6:18Speaker 10: we're going to be separate and guys are going to
- 6:19Speaker 10: be all over the place, and I think it's an
- 6:22Speaker 10: important time. Obviously, it's such a short break, you can't
- 6:26Speaker 10: really take time off, in my opinion. You might take
- 6:28Speaker 10: a little bit of time off throw in just to
- 6:30Speaker 10: kind of reset a little bit, but you're going to
- 6:32Speaker 10: be back to work pretty much right away. But it's separate,
- 6:34Speaker 10: so I think we have more time to work on
- 6:36Speaker 10: individual things that we need to work on. For me, footwork, strength,
- 6:39Speaker 10: getting in shape, all those things, staying in shape and
- 6:42Speaker 10: coming back ready to go in training camp so we
- 6:44Speaker 10: can pick back up right where we left off. I
- 6:47Speaker 10: think that's the biggest thing, is not having to feel
- 6:49Speaker 10: like you take a little bit of a step back
- 6:50Speaker 10: from OTA's to training camp. You want to hit the
- 6:52Speaker 10: ground running, and I'm confident we have a really mature
- 6:54Speaker 10: team and guys are gonna be ready.
- 6:56Speaker 2: Ryan.
- 6:57Speaker 1: They have time off, but the way things are nowadays,
- 6:59Speaker 1: NFL players don't really take any time off from training
- 7:02Speaker 1: and when they come back to training camp, they're expecting
- 7:04Speaker 1: to be ready to go.
- 7:05Speaker 5: Right And part of that is obviously the physical perspective.
- 7:07Speaker 4: You want to be in your best physical shape because
- 7:09Speaker 4: when you start the two days and the long practice
- 7:12Speaker 4: sessions and the long days, it'll grind you down. But
- 7:15Speaker 4: more than that, the guys that I've spoke spoken to
- 7:17Speaker 4: after practice here during OTA's in mini camp, they understand
- 7:20Speaker 4: the circumstance where they're at.
- 7:22Speaker 5: They've got a really good team.
- 7:23Speaker 4: They know that there's an opportunity for them this year
- 7:25Speaker 4: if they buy in completely and if they get the
- 7:28Speaker 4: best of themselves as part of the larger collective of.
- 7:32Speaker 5: A team, they got an opportunity to do something special.
- 7:35Speaker 4: Some of that's money, right, because you get paid after
- 7:38Speaker 4: big years, you get paid when you make playoff runs.
- 7:40Speaker 4: But the other side of it for a guy like
- 7:41Speaker 4: a Josh heinz Allen, is you want to win.
- 7:44Speaker 5: You want to shot in a ring.
- 7:46Speaker 4: And I think a lot of these guys see that
- 7:48Speaker 4: there's an opportunity for this to be one of those
- 7:50Speaker 4: special teams. And so they're going to come back to
- 7:52Speaker 4: Camp John ready to go and to make the most
- 7:55Speaker 4: of every rep they get in August so that they're
- 7:58Speaker 4: ready when the Browns show up in September.
- 8:01Speaker 6: Yeah, my sense is they'll probably have some stuff in
- 8:04Speaker 6: the next few weeks where the receivers and Trevor get together.
- 8:07Speaker 6: But Trevor said yesterday too, and I I.
- 8:09Speaker 7: Agree with him.
- 8:11Speaker 6: That's more of a camaraderie thing. When those guys get together,
- 8:14Speaker 6: it's great for like a social media picture. Hey we're
- 8:16Speaker 6: doing this. They're getting to know each other, they go
- 8:18Speaker 6: have dinner.
- 8:19Speaker 7: Uh. I think the next few.
- 8:22Speaker 6: Weeks for these guys will be very much maintaining where
- 8:25Speaker 6: they're at physically, trying to get ready mentally and uh,
- 8:28Speaker 6: look it's uh, it's an important time, but it's also
- 8:32Speaker 6: an important time for them to balance. You've got to
- 8:34Speaker 6: get away from it a little bit because once July hits, Uh,
- 8:37Speaker 6: you're playing until mid February.
- 8:39Speaker 7: Like that anybody I do.
- 8:41Speaker 1: We love a Super Bowl reference any time of year.
- 8:43Speaker 1: Say with the Sierra Jagson. We're gonna hear from the
- 8:45Speaker 1: rest of some of the assistant coaches and also answer
- 8:48Speaker 1: your fan questions.
- 9:00Speaker 8: Job as coaches is to make you the best player
- 9:03Speaker 8: we can, but it's also the front office's job to
- 9:06Speaker 8: find the player that's going to push you out. Just
- 9:09Speaker 8: like I am an ill of share experiences with him.
- 9:11Speaker 8: I'll tell them stories. You know, from when I was
- 9:12Speaker 8: a Steelers we had an offensive line in there, ramone
- 9:15Speaker 8: foster guard and he had a target on his back
- 9:18Speaker 8: from day one. We need to replace this guy. Well
- 9:21Speaker 8: I'm sitting there seven years later and the guy is
- 9:23Speaker 8: still the starting left guard.
- 9:25Speaker 1: You know.
- 9:25Speaker 8: So just cause you say you're going to replace somebody,
- 9:27Speaker 8: it doesn't mean it's going to happen. It's up to
- 9:29Speaker 8: that guy to keep the spot.
- 9:31Speaker 1: Offensive mink with John Sarah addressing some of the competition
- 9:34Speaker 1: within his position group, and we'll go over some fan
- 9:37Speaker 1: questions about competition and training camp coming up in ozone mailbag. John,
- 9:50Speaker 1: I got some dewer questions to start with Scott from Jacksonville.
- 9:52Speaker 1: He wants to know what mamba periods are. I don't
- 9:54Speaker 1: believe I've seen an explanation of what exactly that means,
- 9:57Speaker 1: so could you please Well.
- 9:58Speaker 6: It's free website, so it's been all over the win
- 10:03Speaker 6: and I don't expect everybody to read everything that's written.
- 10:06Speaker 5: But shortcuts. I didn't expect that from you.
- 10:08Speaker 7: Mamba is essentially.
- 10:13Speaker 6: It. You could easily say competition period. Last week, the
- 10:18Speaker 6: Mamba periods were a big pass rush, one on one
- 10:22Speaker 6: coverage in the back. It's to create an urgency and
- 10:27Speaker 6: a competition level that otherwise may not be there. So
- 10:31Speaker 6: that's what a mamba period is. This team does them
- 10:34Speaker 6: a lot. They do them a little bit during the season,
- 10:37Speaker 6: I believe a lot in training camp and it's all
- 10:40Speaker 6: about keeping things hot and competitive.
- 10:42Speaker 5: Go assessing. It's a coolby thing from La. It all
- 10:45Speaker 5: kind of cycles back to a yeah.
- 10:46Speaker 1: Because it can change a lot. But it's one of
- 10:47Speaker 1: those things where it's like there's a winner right right,
- 10:50Speaker 1: your group can win.
- 10:51Speaker 7: So that's what every no participation trophy in the.
- 10:53Speaker 1: Everybody wants to win. Let's go to Woody from Dunlap,
- 10:56Speaker 1: who says, wants to know, excuse me, how many more
- 10:58Speaker 1: days before the pads of the want and the hitting begins,
- 11:01Speaker 1: so you and the rest of the Jags reporting squad
- 11:03Speaker 1: can begin to fill us stands in on the big
- 11:05Speaker 1: guys on the offense and defensive lines. Let us know
- 11:07Speaker 1: how things are shaken out.
- 11:08Speaker 6: Well about forty I guess right, sometime in late ju I.
- 11:11Speaker 6: They haven't really announced the hard fast date, but for
- 11:15Speaker 6: later July. Yeah, so they'll start hitting five days after
- 11:20Speaker 6: camp begins. And again I said multiple times last week,
- 11:26Speaker 6: Liam understands and embraces what each time in the calendar is.
- 11:34Speaker 2: He knows what this OTA period.
- 11:37Speaker 7: Is mini camp. They're working on passing.
- 11:41Speaker 6: The running game is a huge deal for this team.
- 11:43Speaker 6: It's always a huge deal under Liam. It's a huge
- 11:45Speaker 6: deal this year cause they want to get it better.
- 11:50Speaker 6: If you remember last year on the first day of pads,
- 11:52Speaker 6: they ran. I wouldn't expect that to change this year.
- 11:57Speaker 4: It would say they're They're very strategic in how they
- 12:01Speaker 4: hit when they're one on one here like this, So
- 12:04Speaker 4: I would look for the week they go to play
- 12:07Speaker 4: against Carolina, when they have the joint session against Carolina
- 12:10Speaker 4: and New Orleans and the two against Tampa here where
- 12:14Speaker 4: that's where the real hitting is going to because you
- 12:15Speaker 4: know they use those practice sessions in lieu of reps
- 12:20Speaker 4: during the preseason game. So those are the ones that
- 12:22Speaker 4: I most want to see, And those are a little
- 12:24Speaker 4: further away. Those are what nine ten weeks away, We're
- 12:28Speaker 4: so close, but those are so important now more than ever.
- 12:32Speaker 4: This is the first year where the Jaguars are going
- 12:34Speaker 4: to scrimmage against each of their preseason opponents.
- 12:38Speaker 5: Yes, and that's obviously beginning a trend.
- 12:40Speaker 1: A good trend in getting some quality reps out of
- 12:42Speaker 1: that as well. We're going to close things out with
- 12:44Speaker 1: armand from Atlantic Beach. He wants to know what position
- 12:48Speaker 1: battle intrigues you the most, and why.
- 12:50Speaker 6: Well, there are a lot of times, Brian, if you
- 12:54Speaker 6: get asked this question and you have to give an answer.
- 12:57Speaker 7: But certainly there's no position battles, right.
- 12:59Speaker 6: I mean a lot of times these days in the NFL,
- 13:03Speaker 6: their position battles by name only and you know who's
- 13:05Speaker 6: gonna start.
- 13:06Speaker 7: That's really not the case with this regime. So I
- 13:09Speaker 7: think Wyatt Milam.
- 13:10Speaker 6: And Patrick McCarry is a really good position battle that
- 13:15Speaker 6: I think Milam will wind up winning.
- 13:18Speaker 7: But just because I think that it's on out there,
- 13:22Speaker 7: I've heard it too.
- 13:23Speaker 4: And I've also been told that Jodan Manheim, yeah, could
- 13:27Speaker 4: push Robert Hainsey. So, I mean, you've got the interior
- 13:30Speaker 4: of the offensive line, which is really interesting because you've
- 13:33Speaker 4: got some veterans that were brought here to change the
- 13:35Speaker 4: trajectory of the team and the culture, and you've got
- 13:38Speaker 4: young players who in their second season, one guy really
- 13:41Speaker 4: didn't play very much. Well, neither of them did, but
- 13:43Speaker 4: one that was sidelined with injury. That's challenging. I think
- 13:47Speaker 4: that's outstanding.
- 13:49Speaker 6: No, No, because of the nature of the NFL. Now,
- 13:52Speaker 6: thirty years ago, position battles mattered a great deal because
- 13:55Speaker 6: the starter started to play well. Now you've got a
- 13:58Speaker 6: lot of competition on defense at linebacker. If Nreumeller starts,
- 14:04Speaker 6: it doesn't mean that Jack Kaiser is not gonna play
- 14:07Speaker 6: in the secondary. Who starts at safety, Okay, it matters,
- 14:13Speaker 6: but you're gonna play three safeties.
- 14:15Speaker 7: So at a lot of the positions in training camp, the.
- 14:18Speaker 6: Quote battle will be more us watching to see how
- 14:22Speaker 6: roles shakeout well.
- 14:24Speaker 4: And maybe we're saying the same thing here, but a
- 14:26Speaker 4: more relative question might be, we're the backup battles. Right
- 14:29Speaker 4: as you filled the roster out to fifty three and
- 14:31Speaker 4: even then, you know, talking to Tony Biselli the other
- 14:34Speaker 4: day and you're looking all the way to sixty nine
- 14:36Speaker 4: to make sure that you've got your practice squad filled out.
- 14:39Speaker 7: It's a sixty nine man roster.
- 14:40Speaker 4: Now, who are the guys that are gonna come in
- 14:43Speaker 4: and contribute, whether that's in packages or special teams. So
- 14:48Speaker 4: the backup battles are probably the more compelling battles because
- 14:50Speaker 4: you've got some veterans that they signed or who've been
- 14:53Speaker 4: around for a few years and some young guys that
- 14:55Speaker 4: they're really excited about.
- 14:56Speaker 1: Yeah, I think particularly on defense when we talk about
- 14:58Speaker 1: how they get subbed in and out quite free. That's
- 15:00Speaker 1: one of the ones where you look after the game
- 15:02Speaker 1: and kind of see how many reps each person got,
- 15:04Speaker 1: and a lot of that's dictated by the style of
- 15:06Speaker 1: the game as well, But that's something I'm intrigued about
- 15:09Speaker 1: and kind of seeing how much usage there will be
- 15:11Speaker 1: with some of the cornerbacks and how that shakes out
- 15:13Speaker 1: now that Travis Hunter's healthy again. That's something I'll be
- 15:16Speaker 1: keeping my eyes for sure.
- 15:17Speaker 6: And they're gonna have difficult roster decisions because they're gonna
- 15:22Speaker 6: have guys at defensive end stands out where yes, you
- 15:27Speaker 6: can carry guys on the practice squad. They're gonna have
- 15:30Speaker 6: guys who were good enough that it might be hard
- 15:32Speaker 6: to get them through to the practice squads. So those
- 15:35Speaker 6: are it's a sixty process, but you still have to
- 15:38Speaker 6: be careful who's out there. Teams will pick up good
- 15:43Speaker 6: players from this franchise in.
- 15:45Speaker 4: August, and I think it's a great problem to have
- 15:46Speaker 4: because how many how many seasons did we talk about
- 15:50Speaker 4: there weren't guys that were signing on to the roster
- 15:52Speaker 4: was so thin many where there was nobody that you
- 15:55Speaker 4: thought was gonna go somewhere else and really have an
- 15:57Speaker 4: opportunity to start.
- 15:58Speaker 1: Don't project that this year at all. Say what's here
- 16:01Speaker 1: on jag Zam.
- 16:01Speaker 11: We're gonna do some hot takes after the break.
- 16:16Speaker 12: He's healthy, that's the number one thing. He's healthy, He's
- 16:19Speaker 12: ready to go. I'm excited. He's excited. Trevor is excited.
- 16:26Speaker 12: You know, they're making plays on pushing the ball down
- 16:28Speaker 12: the field, and he's making the most of every opportunity.
- 16:32Speaker 6: Uh.
- 16:32Speaker 12: From a from a mental standpoint, a physical standpoint, we
- 16:35Speaker 12: love where he's at.
- 16:36Speaker 1: ID receiever coach Edgar Bennett talking a little bit about
- 16:39Speaker 1: Brian Thomas Junior and what he's looked like so far
- 16:41Speaker 1: in the off season program, and I think everybody's seen
- 16:44Speaker 1: it so far, and BTJ himself saying, you know, I'm
- 16:47Speaker 1: healthy again, I feel good, and he's in a right
- 16:49Speaker 1: mindset heading into the off season.
- 16:52Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 16:52Speaker 6: I thought when BTJ talked a couple of weeks ago,
- 16:57Speaker 6: he's one of these guys. He doesn't really talk in
- 16:59Speaker 6: long but if you listen to what he's saying, there's
- 17:03Speaker 6: off an insight there.
- 17:05Speaker 7: And when.
- 17:08Speaker 6: Somebody said, what's the the being healthy and he kind
- 17:11Speaker 6: of laughing, is what doesn't hurt her run? That's pretty
- 17:14Speaker 6: like we tend to forget because we're watching it on
- 17:19Speaker 6: TV and they're wearing big uniforms and helmets that sometimes
- 17:24Speaker 6: they're playing and they're in pain and they're not as
- 17:28Speaker 6: natural Traylon BTJ. So I would be very surprised if
- 17:36Speaker 6: this is not a much more productive, much more dynamic
- 17:39Speaker 6: year for BTJ.
- 17:40Speaker 4: I had someone in that locker room tell me a
- 17:42Speaker 4: couple of months ago that he's so laid back that
- 17:46Speaker 4: you don't realize how proud he is that he wants
- 17:49Speaker 4: to be a great player because you don't see the
- 17:51Speaker 4: intensity in his face as he's walking through the hallway
- 17:54Speaker 4: or through the locker room, but that he's an immensely
- 17:56Speaker 4: proud guy and they expected a lot from.
- 17:59Speaker 5: Him this year.
- 18:01Speaker 1: I think we can see that with some of the
- 18:02Speaker 1: frustration he felt last year right playing her and whatnot,
- 18:05Speaker 1: but definitely turning the page.
- 18:07Speaker 2: That's my hot take.
- 18:08Speaker 1: So we'll go to you guys first though. So Brian,
- 18:10Speaker 1: what is your hot take for us? Blazing hot take?
- 18:13Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm not sure how hot this is, but I
- 18:15Speaker 4: took a Jaguars to win back to back division titles
- 18:18Speaker 4: for the first time since ninety eight ninety nine when
- 18:20Speaker 4: it was the old AFC Central, and thus host back
- 18:23Speaker 4: to back home playoff games for the first time since
- 18:25Speaker 4: nineteen ninety eight and nineteen ninety nine.
- 18:28Speaker 5: It's been a quarter of a century or more.
- 18:30Speaker 4: And I know that the Colts and the Titans are
- 18:34Speaker 4: behind them, and the Texans are right there with them.
- 18:37Speaker 5: But as I.
- 18:38Speaker 4: Watch this team, I think they're more balanced. I think
- 18:40Speaker 4: the Texans are very lopsided in favor of their defense.
- 18:43Speaker 4: There's a lot of questions about CJ. Stroud, who didn't
- 18:46Speaker 4: have a running game last year. Doesn't appear that there
- 18:50Speaker 4: is a well defined running game this year. They made
- 18:54Speaker 4: the trade with Detroit. They've got questions. They've been able
- 18:58Speaker 4: to find answers because the defense has been that But
- 19:00Speaker 4: I think the Jaguars are above them in terms of
- 19:04Speaker 4: overall abilities coaching all of it right now, and I
- 19:08Speaker 4: just think that they're the clear favorite in the AFC.
- 19:11Speaker 7: Sound Yeah, I think.
- 19:12Speaker 2: It's gonna be hard, but it's supposed to be hard.
- 19:15Speaker 7: Yeah, it's the NFL.
- 19:16Speaker 5: It's not you know, well, I'm not making marking down
- 19:20Speaker 5: six wins.
- 19:21Speaker 6: So it's it's gonna be really hard to win the South.
- 19:24Speaker 6: But I think I agree. I think they will win
- 19:26Speaker 6: the South. I think they're the favorites. And Brian, you've
- 19:29Speaker 6: talked about it a couple of times in some of
- 19:31Speaker 6: the stuff we've written. There's a feeling about this team,
- 19:36Speaker 6: and I get that this fan base has been through
- 19:39Speaker 6: so much hope in twenty seventeen and then fall off,
- 19:43Speaker 6: and then hope in twenty two and then fall off.
- 19:47Speaker 6: And I don't know how to tell people that it's different,
- 19:50Speaker 6: because I'm sure I felt that way then, but I
- 19:53Speaker 6: would just be really, I think the biggest difference and
- 19:55Speaker 6: it's it's sort of my next hot take, so we'll
- 19:57Speaker 6: get to it.
- 19:59Speaker 7: Those teams do and have.
- 20:00Speaker 6: This quarterback, Yeah, And I think that's really in this
- 20:04Speaker 6: day and age, if you have a quarterback that you
- 20:07Speaker 6: can pin it on, you can start piling good seasons
- 20:10Speaker 6: on top of the other.
- 20:11Speaker 7: I think this is the year they start doing that.
- 20:12Speaker 4: He doesn't matter who you talk to, Kay, they really
- 20:14Speaker 4: believe that the last eight games of last season, or
- 20:16Speaker 4: who this kid is.
- 20:17Speaker 5: I said, kid, he's a man.
- 20:20Speaker 4: That wasn't a normally his best football we saw last
- 20:23Speaker 4: year is what they expect to see going forward.
- 20:26Speaker 1: John, how good can he be next year?
- 20:28Speaker 6: Well, that's my hot take good professional show business people.
- 20:33Speaker 7: He was good.
- 20:34Speaker 6: He was what fifth and MVP voting. I think he's
- 20:40Speaker 6: going to be MVP level. I don't know if you
- 20:42Speaker 6: win the MVP, but going into the next season, it
- 20:47Speaker 6: would not surprise me Brian and Kay if by the
- 20:49Speaker 6: end of the season we are in the football world
- 20:53Speaker 6: is talking about him.
- 20:55Speaker 7: Mahomes, Alan Lawrence.
- 20:58Speaker 6: Now I'm not sure sure he'll pass those two because
- 21:01Speaker 6: those two are this era Rushmore. But would it surprise
- 21:06Speaker 6: you if that's the group? No, I mean, Drake may
- 21:08Speaker 6: very good, bo Nick's very good. There's other good players.
- 21:11Speaker 6: But is there anybody outside those top two that you
- 21:15Speaker 6: think by the end of this season that it would
- 21:17Speaker 6: surprise you if you're favored in comparative favoring comparably, he's
- 21:23Speaker 6: better than bon Nixon Demer last year. I mean, so,
- 21:25Speaker 6: I mean there's again this is the old fans have
- 21:32Speaker 6: heard this before about a good season and then it
- 21:36Speaker 6: falls off. I just don't think he falls off.
- 21:38Speaker 4: Back to the feeling you can't quantify this. But when
- 21:41Speaker 4: you see the way that he controls the huddle, yeah,
- 21:44Speaker 4: the way that he turns and coaches the young running
- 21:46Speaker 4: backs or the tight ends or the receivers or even
- 21:48Speaker 4: the offensive line. He's always sort of done that, but
- 21:51Speaker 4: there's a different authority, yeah there to him this year
- 21:55Speaker 4: and it's.
- 21:55Speaker 5: Like, oh wow, that's what that looks like.
- 22:00Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 22:00Speaker 6: And he's the Ozone Podcast guest for the final Ozone
- 22:04Speaker 6: Podcast and it hasn't dropped.
- 22:07Speaker 2: There's another word Brian dropped is like the kids us
- 22:10Speaker 2: that these days you.
- 22:10Speaker 7: Got it all?
- 22:11Speaker 2: Is this a tease?
- 22:12Speaker 7: Well?
- 22:12Speaker 6: And I would encourage fans who wonder why we're talking
- 22:16Speaker 6: about Trevor in this way to listen to it because
- 22:21Speaker 6: there's a calmness and there's a veteran poise, an awareness.
- 22:27Speaker 6: And at the end we were talking if it was
- 22:31Speaker 6: after the podcast or not.
- 22:32Speaker 2: He's only twenty six, yeah, ye.
- 22:35Speaker 6: And there's players on this team are just coming to lead.
- 22:37Speaker 6: They're twenty five, and I kind of forget that cause
- 22:41Speaker 6: we've been around him for five or six years and
- 22:42Speaker 6: we've seen him grow.
- 22:44Speaker 7: There's a lot left for this kid.
- 22:46Speaker 1: You know.
- 22:46Speaker 4: I had somebody ask me the other day, but wouldn't
- 22:48Speaker 4: we have seen it already? I mean, isn't he what
- 22:50Speaker 4: he is now? And I remind them the Terry Bradshaw
- 22:53Speaker 4: Hall of Famer won four Super Bowls, didn't become a
- 22:56Speaker 4: full time starter until his fifth season, and then went
- 22:59Speaker 4: on to put together that Hall of Fame career.
- 23:03Speaker 5: Everybody's different.
- 23:03Speaker 6: Everybody wants a blueprint in quarterbacks, and the reality is,
- 23:06Speaker 6: if you look at careers, the blueprint isn't the blueprint
- 23:10Speaker 6: until they're done right. So, I mean everybody wanted a
- 23:13Speaker 6: Peyton blueprint when I covered everybody forgets in year three
- 23:16Speaker 6: or four, Peyton was still throwing picks and people in Indie.
- 23:20Speaker 6: I remember being in a playoff game where people said, oh,
- 23:22Speaker 6: if Peyton doesn't stop all the stuff with the line
- 23:25Speaker 6: of scrimmage, I'll never be good.
- 23:26Speaker 7: So, I mean, there's always.
- 23:30Speaker 6: Narratives early in a career, and we always want to
- 23:34Speaker 6: use comparison and say this will be this.
- 23:36Speaker 7: I don't think we've seen what the kid can do.
- 23:38Speaker 6: I think this year, as much as the last eight
- 23:43Speaker 6: games were in acceleration, I think he believes that.
- 23:46Speaker 2: It's really going to accelerate this year. He's not going
- 23:49Speaker 2: to say.
- 23:49Speaker 6: It that in that way, but I think inside, I
- 23:53Speaker 6: think there's a confidence there that this season could be special.
- 23:57Speaker 1: I think that shows for sure. Part of that is
- 23:59Speaker 1: this wide receiver group returning the same as it was
- 24:02Speaker 1: at the end of last season, and I think it's
- 24:04Speaker 1: one of the strongest groups he's had. And while I
- 24:07Speaker 1: think they're all going to be successful, I'm fully I'm
- 24:08Speaker 1: all in on the BTJ bounce back. For me. I
- 24:11Speaker 1: don't think it's gonna necessarily look like his rookie season,
- 24:14Speaker 1: but I think he's going to have touchdowns and be
- 24:17Speaker 1: able to be that big play player on offense that
- 24:20Speaker 1: they were missing at times last season. And because of
- 24:22Speaker 1: the way that they're going to have the offense, I
- 24:24Speaker 1: think maybe Jacoby Myers leads you in catches, Parker leads
- 24:27Speaker 1: you in yards, and then BTJ can the June touchdowns.
- 24:30Speaker 1: It's going to look something like that. So success will
- 24:33Speaker 1: look different. But I think when you have someone like
- 24:36Speaker 1: Brian Thomas Junior who can be special and make those
- 24:38Speaker 1: plays once or twice a game, that is the difference maker,
- 24:41Speaker 1: and having that consistently this season can make this offense
- 24:45Speaker 1: go from good to great at times to consistently creating He.
- 24:49Speaker 5: Made big catches in big games last year.
- 24:52Speaker 4: Didn't make a ton of them, but he made him
- 24:54Speaker 4: when it counted the most, the one in Kansas City
- 24:55Speaker 4: set up the game winning touchdown.
- 24:57Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 24:58Speaker 6: I I don't think he has to have rookie BTJ
- 25:03Speaker 6: numbers to be critical for this offense. And I think
- 25:08Speaker 6: if you add that element that guy's talking about with
- 25:11Speaker 6: an unlocked Breton Strange and talking to Rich Angeloi yesterday
- 25:17Speaker 6: when uh, uh the tight Ends coach just about how
- 25:21Speaker 6: unlocking Breton Strange with the T two new tight Ends.
- 25:27Speaker 6: It's the first time Trevor's had a group where you think,
- 25:30Speaker 6: who are they gonna stop? And uh, but BTJ deep
- 25:34Speaker 6: to Guy's point, that's the uh.
- 25:38Speaker 7: That's the explosive element that was missing.
- 25:39Speaker 1: I didn't even mentioned Travis un or, So there's that.
- 25:41Speaker 2: There's that in the mix.
- 25:42Speaker 1: To your little X factor, say, well, let's we'll tell
- 25:44Speaker 1: you what's coming up the rest of the off season
- 25:46Speaker 1: as we head into training camp.
- 25:59Speaker 9: Anytime you get a chance to coach a great person
- 26:02Speaker 9: and a great player in one as a coach, you
- 26:06Speaker 9: know you dream of those opportunities. It's gonna be really fun.
- 26:09Speaker 9: He's been outstanding so far. And he goes above and
- 26:12Speaker 9: beyond and compare himself. So I can't wait for.
- 26:16Speaker 1: Matthew Arugio, defensive pass game coordinator. I forget the titles,
- 26:20Speaker 1: but he came from Miami Dolphins, previously worked with Anthony Campanili.
- 26:24Speaker 1: He's working a ton with the defensive backs, but it's
- 26:27Speaker 1: kind of like a mini camp out there, the energy
- 26:28Speaker 1: that he has with that group, and talking about the
- 26:31Speaker 1: excitement of working with Travis Hunter, who's working back from
- 26:33Speaker 1: injury right now, but as involved as he could possibly be,
- 26:38Speaker 1: and expect him to be full go for training camp.
- 26:40Speaker 1: But we almost lose that aspect of the story. Sometimes
- 26:42Speaker 1: we're talking so much about what the team looks like,
- 26:44Speaker 1: but oh hey, Travis Hunter's coming back.
- 26:46Speaker 4: Absolutely, and I've heard that that coach is a game
- 26:51Speaker 4: changer for the secondary. The fit is much more conducive
- 26:55Speaker 4: with camp and Eli than it was last year.
- 26:57Speaker 5: Not that you have a good special teams coach.
- 26:59Speaker 4: Or's part sorry, a secondary coach, but that this guy
- 27:02Speaker 4: in particular has a great approach like campan Eely, and
- 27:06Speaker 4: they're very excited about what he brings.
- 27:08Speaker 6: Well, it's odd to think and Ky's made the point
- 27:11Speaker 6: all day and you're right. You almost forget about Travis Hunter,
- 27:14Speaker 6: and he was a number two overall. Pick I mean,
- 27:16Speaker 6: he's Travis Hunter to me, the secondary every time I
- 27:21Speaker 6: get questions this all the season, like well where did
- 27:23Speaker 6: they improve? They lost Lloyd and ten, they didn't get
- 27:25Speaker 6: better anywhere. The secondary to me is the tangible place
- 27:30Speaker 6: where Antonio Johnson developing, Monteric Brown developing Travis Caleb Ransaw.
- 27:38Speaker 6: That's the one place where you might see major acceleration.
- 27:42Speaker 7: From a position group.
- 27:44Speaker 1: So this is our final show of the off season.
- 27:46Speaker 1: We'll take about a month break. Everybody, enjoy your Fourth
- 27:48Speaker 1: of July, but we will be back. I think reporte
- 27:51Speaker 1: is the end of July. John when are we getting
- 27:53Speaker 1: back in and in July? And then shows will be
- 27:55Speaker 1: back in August. But of course check out Jaguars dot com.
- 27:58Speaker 1: Send you on all your questions the dead period who
- 28:01Speaker 1: will answer them all. And enjoy your July and your summer.
- 28:04Speaker 1: We'll see you back for training camp in a couple
- 28:06Speaker 1: of weeks.
