- 0:21the fire when the session gets thick.
- 0:23Ryan in the mix with the numbers and plans.
- 0:25From every sauce, the medals. Yeah, we.
- 0:26Break it all down. Hard graft Monday, left by the
- 0:28Sunday, still chasing. Hello and welcome back to the
- 0:33Easy Double Podcast. We are episode 64.
- 0:37It's Monday night and I'm joined by the two people who always
- 0:40join me to talk about running on a weekly basis, Dean Menzies and
- 0:44Aaron Smith. How are you doing, Dean?
- 0:47Good mate, going well. You've just come out the gym, is
- 0:52it? I picked up on there because I
- 0:53didn't see you in there. Thank.
- 0:57You. We I don't know how to take
- 1:00that. Were you light or were you DNS?
- 1:04That was the DNS, Yeah. It's no excuses, just
- 1:09acknowledging that it's a tougher sell to my mentality
- 1:14during these darker winter nights to get up there.
- 1:19No, Yeah, it is. Conveniently for me, it wasn't
- 1:24today. I I was not at work today, but
- 1:29normally it's part of my commute home.
- 1:31It's on the way. So it's very easy for me to find
- 1:34the motivation to get there. But I appreciate you are but a
- 1:38stone's throw away from home when you're leaving the office,
- 1:42so a bit more of a difficult proposition.
- 1:45I also need to be careful not to make excuses about not attending
- 1:49because of the planned double trouble that I have for later.
- 1:52So no excuses, just owning the fact that I can't be asked to
- 1:57get there and I need to just get in the routine of using the the
- 2:01gym in the apartment because like then I don't even need to
- 2:04go outside, especially during winter.
- 2:07So that's that's my mentality with it.
- 2:11It's tricky, although my myself, the gym class is that when
- 2:16you're there equality, it's like a group training session.
- 2:20When you're there, the quality of the workouts better.
- 2:22You spend the full 45 minutes doing what you meant to and you
- 2:26get feedback on how best to do it.
- 2:28So ah, yeah, ah, anyway. The pros are there.
- 2:34There is certain upside. Yeah.
- 2:36Anyway, less, less gym talk. Owen, how are you doing?
- 2:40Doing all right, yeah, just tipping away here.
- 2:44Legs pulled up all right from Saturday, so.
- 2:48Yeah, on the back of the season opener.
- 2:50Seasonal player. Yeah, it's such a cool track
- 2:52that I wasn't expecting it. It's sort of like in a hole, but
- 2:55like it's surrounded by like these big trees.
- 2:59And yeah, I know it was really, really cool and like some really
- 3:02good runners who are competing as well.
- 3:05You can go through the whole results in your race and stuff
- 3:08later, but it looked like it was quite windy on the stream now.
- 3:11So it was windy. And there's these pitches like
- 3:17up behind the the trees, the forests and on the football
- 3:20pitches, it was really windy. But then when I got onto the
- 3:24track, it was really weird. Like, I don't remember it being
- 3:28windy, if you get me. So apparently there was ghosts.
- 3:34But I can't use the wind as an excuse or as a reason.
- 3:41That is why I'd run faster like yeah, so.
- 3:45I was going to say I don't want to give give the plot away, but
- 3:48I was going to say you didn't feel the wind because you were
- 3:50tucked in the whole race. But that's actually maybe not
- 3:53the case, is it? No.
- 3:55Well, very lucky to have the guys from Fly Carve actually
- 3:58pacing. So yeah, they brought me around.
- 4:03I think it was a mile. And then, yeah, I sort of am.
- 4:07I took over until the last lap when someone took over from me.
- 4:16What else is going on? We've got an upcoming Easy
- 4:20Double in the community, the first ever official Easy Double
- 4:24run in partnership with the Run Centre, the retail store here in
- 4:30West Perth owned by RAF, our coach, well man and Dean's coach
- 4:34and also on our part of that. So I think the concept is they
- 4:40do a run in the morning at 6:00 AM in Kings Park on the trails
- 4:43and on or bring them down there. I don't know if it's a new range
- 4:47but it's the first I've heard of a trail range.
- 4:50They must be trying to push this trail shoe.
- 4:53On the photo on our post it looks looks pretty nice.
- 4:57To be fair, I'm thinking like that'd do me as a lifestyle
- 5:00casual shoe because I was thinking before, if I ever start
- 5:06deliberately running around in a pair of trail shoes, that's
- 5:08when, that's when it's over for me.
- 5:11When I stopped chasing fast times, the game's gone.
- 5:16But then there is a road shop run in the evening.
- 5:20So 6:00 AM on the trails in the morning and then 5:45 PM on the
- 5:25road in the evening. And if anyone comes down, you'll
- 5:29get the opportunity to try both the trail shoe and some of their
- 5:32fast or stability shoes. So yeah, a week on Wednesday,
- 5:37Wednesday, the 20th of May, and there's something along the
- 5:41lines of someone who turns up to both the morning and the evening
- 5:45run will go in like a draw to win.
- 5:48I think it's a pair of those shoes, but don't quote me.
- 5:53So that's fun. And where do we go with this
- 5:57episode? There's quite a few results.
- 5:58Again, we're going to be spending a lot of time in
- 6:01Ireland with Owens meets because it wasn't just Owen racing there
- 6:04as we had last week. There was all sorts of elite
- 6:08athletes from across Europe, so that must have been pretty cool.
- 6:12Owen, was your head almost on a swivel spot on everyone or did
- 6:16you? Did they always blend in?
- 6:18It was. Sort of annoying because all the
- 6:20races I wanted to see were like either side of my race so I was
- 6:25like either like warming up. So warming up.
- 6:28I think I missed the women's 3K and then cooling debt and I
- 6:34missed the men's international 3K, so the main 3K race and then
- 6:39cooling down, I missed another one.
- 6:44I think I just got the end of the men's 1500 as well.
- 6:49And so, yeah, couldn't really like get settled and enjoy them,
- 6:53but I did get to see some of the boys roll around and pretty
- 6:57fast. Sweet.
- 7:00Well we'll start closer to my location right now in Australia
- 7:06with the XCR round one over in Melbourne.
- 7:10And I'm not sure, we probably won't cover each round of this
- 7:15because some of them are kind of random cross country races, but
- 7:19this one was a fast 5K on the roads.
- 7:21And seeing these results made me very jealous of everyone who got
- 7:25the opportunity to RIP a 5K around Albert Park.
- 7:29And then, yeah, the depth is pretty wild.
- 7:32Like in the men's race on the results, 65 of them went sub 15
- 7:38with seven people sub fourteen in fact, or 6.
- 7:44And for the women that it was replicated as well, I'm not sure
- 7:47what the exact conversion is from a men's time to female
- 7:51time, but 35 women were sub 18 as well.
- 7:54So it shows the depth that's there on both sides for the men,
- 8:00Ed Marks won in 1337, which for a 5K on the road is bloody fast
- 8:07and particularly just like a kind of standard domestic road
- 8:12race. And he he beat Matt Buckle and
- 8:16Andy Buchanan respectively in 2nd and 3rd 13501353.
- 8:21So it's not as if these were just random guys.
- 8:25They're some of the best kind of distance runners in the country.
- 8:29But the fact that they all will just roll out through Albert
- 8:33Park is testament to what's going on in Melbourne, I guess,
- 8:38and then go on. Albert Park can be pretty windy
- 8:41as well now, I'm guessing by the results here, even though it's
- 8:45an out and back. So surely if you're the wind on
- 8:48your back, you've on your face on one way.
- 8:50So yeah, I think even last year I remember seeing like super
- 8:55fast times in this race. So yeah, it's the crazy.
- 9:00Standard, I remember us recapping it last year and
- 9:04weren't when they may be just under 14 minutes, I think I
- 9:09thought whereas like 13 1/2 minutes, like that's a bit of a
- 9:14stand out, I think, not to mention the depth I think, Oh,
- 9:20and when we remember we were talking about armor when where
- 9:24you placed dinner. Like, I wouldn't have thought
- 9:26that a Aussie race would have that degree of depth to it, but
- 9:31it's pretty impressive. Yeah, and that's it.
- 9:36Would that be Andy's first race in a while?
- 9:38Andy Buchanan that is the Australian marathon record
- 9:41holder there finishing third, coming in sub 14.
- 9:45I guess hard to be disappointed with that.
- 9:47Yeah, didn't I see on his, was it his Instagram or was there a
- 9:50YouTube video that maybe came off the back of him race racing
- 9:54again? Yeah, seen that in his caption
- 9:58and watched it, but yeah, interested to see what he's been
- 10:04up to because I tried to stroll scroll for his Strava before.
- 10:08Doesn't actually look like he's been doing any crazy like
- 10:11quality stuff, just getting the volume back.
- 10:14And then to me, obviously just run sub 14 off putting together
- 10:18a little bit of mileage is, yeah, makes me feel a bit sick
- 10:21to be fair. That's the thing that I think is
- 10:24most impressive. Like he's got injured, tried to
- 10:28get back quickly, reinjured again.
- 10:30So he hasn't had like a decent block in a while, like apart
- 10:33from what he's done in most recent weeks.
- 10:36So for him to be able to like bang out 1353, yeah, it's it is
- 10:41ridiculous. No doubt he still won't be too
- 10:45happy getting beaten by like is that Matt Buckle is like his
- 10:48teammate or training partner at least.
- 10:51So bragging rights. He's lost the bragging rights
- 10:55there, I'm sure. All in good spirit though.
- 10:58But for Ed Marks to put 13 seconds into them, like, that's
- 11:02massive as well. Like that's so impressive.
- 11:07Looks like a fun race. Yeah.
- 11:10Was looking at Ed Marks his profile because the obviously
- 11:14the Commonwealth Games is upcoming and there's a 10,000
- 11:17meters there. And what stands out on his
- 11:20results is he went and ran that 10,000 meters over in California
- 11:27in March and ran 2754. So I wonder if that's going to
- 11:31be enough for him to get a 10,000 meter spot over there.
- 11:39And is this like a bit of a reminder?
- 11:40Like, hey, I'm still fit. And he goes and takes Andy's
- 11:44scalp. It's not going to do him any
- 11:46harm. The women, the girl who seems to
- 11:51be cleaning up everything at the minute.
- 11:53Donvay Vilhoyne or however you may say that surname.
- 11:56I apologize. Donvay 1607.
- 11:59So pretty quick again from Stella Radford, 1616 and
- 12:03Catherine Dowie 1619. It's so funny, right?
- 12:07Was talking about a fast 5K on the road now because it was only
- 12:11like, was it last week's episode or the one before where we're
- 12:14saying like, wouldn't you just love the opportunity to get in a
- 12:18rapid 5K on the road? And then up pops bloody Albert
- 12:23Park 5K to remind us how good they've got it over there.
- 12:28Because you would never consider travelling to to do that race
- 12:33with it just being one of the XCR ones.
- 12:36But if you're after a 5 KPB, what?
- 12:39Why wouldn't you when you travel like overseas for half marathons
- 12:44and whatever? Do you know if it like it's like
- 12:46World Athletic certified like without even count towards
- 12:50anything? I was thinking the same thing.
- 12:52I don't know. I remember the other the half
- 12:56marathon that's part of the XCR not being certified as well, for
- 13:01what it's worth, but I don't know.
- 13:03Yeah, you hope it is. I mean the you'll know if it
- 13:08pops up on people, on the People 's World Athletics profiles, I
- 13:14think. I guess also that signifies the
- 13:17start of cross country season down under.
- 13:19I know WI Athletics, they're starting to schedule the local
- 13:25cross country races here as well.
- 13:26So bit of change to the start of what's happening over in
- 13:31Ireland, Evan. Will that be on your radar, Ryan
- 13:36that WA cross country? Raph asked me this the other
- 13:41day. Actually it's on.
- 13:43It depends maybe with if we get that Gold Coast entry because
- 13:47it's the weekend before the state cross country long.
- 13:52I think it's 10K, so maybe wouldn't be advisable to do a
- 13:5610K cross country race into a half marathon the next weekend.
- 14:01So yeah, we'll have to see. I would like to if it's if it's
- 14:04doable, but the nationals is over in Ballarat, so I'm not
- 14:10sure I'd fancy going to Ballarat innovative commerce just for
- 14:14cross country, so. That was going to be my next
- 14:17question. Like if you qualified, would you
- 14:19go? And like, are you, do you think
- 14:22this half marathon is coming very soon or do you think like
- 14:27you're just eager to do it? Bit of both.
- 14:32Yeah. It probably, I don't know, it's
- 14:35a long time in terms of maybe the trajectory that I'm on now,
- 14:38like each week is probably different to the last, but it's
- 14:40also probably a little bit too soon to try and seriously think
- 14:45about running the PB. But if I can be just fit and
- 14:49have fun then I'd be keen to race it either way.
- 14:52When is Goldie? July 1st week of July weekend,
- 14:56yeah. First weekend of July.
- 14:57Oh, so you've you've loads of time is it that the 5th, the 4th
- 15:04and 5th of July Yeah, So what we think 123456 set lad, you've got
- 15:14book at a time, you'll be a different person but.
- 15:17Then need to get the entry first to think this time next week
- 15:20maybe find out. What you mean?
- 15:23Have you contacted them directly or?
- 15:25It's one of those like nomination things, you know,
- 15:28through the state have X amount of spots.
- 15:32So then I think to get 6 or something, maybe is.
- 15:34This the national half. Yes.
- 15:36It's like not yeah, yeah, yeah. OK, I was actually trying to
- 15:40nominate yet but I had to make an account and I didn't bother,
- 15:44sorry. Nah, I think you can only
- 15:46nominate yourself weirdly. OK, OK, OK.
- 15:50That would be fun if you could go on and like upvote me,
- 15:56downvote me. Like Nah he's not, fist fuck him
- 15:59off. But you have to pay your own
- 16:01way, dear. You get the entry, but you have
- 16:05to pay your own way, yeah. OK, at least you get something
- 16:08like and you might get AWA singlet.
- 16:11Yeah. Invaluable.
- 16:13Priceless. Yeah, so that takes us to
- 16:19Belfast City then. Owen, do you want to whip
- 16:22through the other results and then maybe do your recap or
- 16:26whichever way around you fancy it?
- 16:28Yeah, I'll do the others first. So all the 8 hundreds were on at
- 16:31the very end. So I didn't bother staying
- 16:33around for any of these. But in the women's eight
- 16:35hundreds, the main race, Sarah Calvert from Edinburgh Uni, she
- 16:42ran two O 190 with Hannah Cameron from Scotland, two O 344
- 16:48and then Kahisa Malanga from Great Britain, she ran a two O
- 16:53584 for 3rd in the women's 1500, Melissa Courtney Bryant from the
- 16:59UK and she ran a four O 450 which was a meet record.
- 17:05And Ava Lloyd, who's part of that M11 track club with Keely,
- 17:10she ran a 4/07/04. And Molly Hutchinson from Great
- 17:13Britain, she ran 407.27, so pretty tight there.
- 17:17And this one, I actually watched this one and Melissa Courtney
- 17:21Bryant, she went out with the pacer and the rest sort of hung
- 17:24back. So she she did a good like 20-30
- 17:28meters on the other girls. So she went out hard and she
- 17:32hung on and like 404 for the first one season like in
- 17:35Belfast. Like you can't complain with
- 17:37that either. Like that's a good result.
- 17:40She's like Olympic representative, if not world
- 17:44championship, so she's probably like star on paper.
- 17:48Yeah, and they had a few big names.
- 17:50All film didn't show up. Like Isaac Camelli was meant to
- 17:54run the 1500 and he just like they were like on the announcer.
- 17:59They're like, oh, and Isaac Camelli is in here on the start
- 18:03list, but like, he wasn't on the track.
- 18:07So yeah, a few of them didn't show up, but it's still good to
- 18:10see like some really, really good runners.
- 18:12You know when we, when you read the fields out last week and you
- 18:16mentioned Matt Ramsdon and you said the UK one, not the
- 18:19Australian one. When I was watching the stream,
- 18:21they were reading out the start list and the commentators said
- 18:25Matt Ramsdon. And then he got, he was like,
- 18:28oh, why is it that like there's an Australian Matt Ramsden here,
- 18:31like that's that's mad. And then the other guy corrected
- 18:34them. He was like, no, no, it's
- 18:35literally a different fella. And Australian Matters had to
- 18:39clarify he's not him so. They tagged Australian Matt in
- 18:44the post I think, yeah. And the women's 3K.
- 18:51So I didn't really get to watch this one but I'm apparently they
- 18:55went out really slow so they didn't go with the pacer.
- 18:58So the pacer pulled back which is why the times aren't too
- 19:02crazy. Cameron Kernjewel from Sweden
- 19:05she ran 85698 at Lisa rooms from Belgium she ran 85899 and then
- 19:14Elisa Vendrest from Belgium she ran 859.94.
- 19:20So these are the big kicked in. I think they could have went
- 19:22through the 1st K in like a three O 6.
- 19:25So they made-up a lot of ground on the last lap.
- 19:29And a note we mentioned here is Philly bowed and she this could
- 19:34be a double trouble. Now I do love Philly, I love our
- 19:37content, but she she flew over the morning of the race.
- 19:44So her race was at like 1210 past 12.
- 19:48So she got, she was about 5:00 to get a flight to Belfast and
- 19:53apparently she slept in or something.
- 19:55So she was rushing and then she dropped out with like 2 laps to
- 19:59go. So yeah, I'm not like obviously
- 20:05she's a marathoner. So this is like totally alien
- 20:09like this sort of speed, like doing dropping down to a 3K is
- 20:13like a bit extreme, but. Yeah, I don't know how.
- 20:18Like I don't just feel mentally it's not good to drop out of
- 20:21like a 3K of all things, like with two laps to go.
- 20:24Like she didn't say she was injured or anything, but.
- 20:28Do you know where she was in the race when she'd done it?
- 20:31As in like through the field? She was a good.
- 20:34Bit back, she wasn't having a good time.
- 20:38She wasn't loving the grind, put it that way.
- 20:42I'm annoyed I haven't watched her because she's done a little
- 20:44video or Instagram story to explain what's went on.
- 20:48Should have watched it because I was going to talk about DNF and
- 20:53and stuff as a double trouble but I can't really come for her
- 20:57if I don't know the reason. She didn't have, she's like, oh,
- 21:01I'm not here to make excuses. Like it's not really good
- 21:03enough. Like she said, she slept in in
- 21:05the morning and it was a little bit windy.
- 21:09She came up with a couple but like she's fit and healthy,
- 21:12that's the main thing. Like the men's 800.
- 21:17So the winner was Henry Jonas from Lochborough and he ran
- 21:2214576. Second was Jackie Jack Higgins
- 21:27from Tunbridge AC who ran a 14587 and 3rd was Callum Dodds
- 21:33from Great Britain who ran 14636.
- 21:37So again, not too shabby at 1:45 for like your first race of the
- 21:41season and the men's international 1500.
- 21:47So this is good on this one was pretty stacked.
- 21:50So Ben Patterson took the win from Great Britain.
- 21:53He ran at 33796. Second was Archie Davis from
- 21:57Brighton, he ran at 33957 and 3rd was Ted Higgins.
- 22:02Jack Higgins, the Laden came second in the 800.
- 22:05His twin brother, he ran at 33973.
- 22:09And just shout out Philip Marin from Dub City 8 Harriers, he ran
- 22:13at 34257 for his season opener. And then friend of the show
- 22:19Callum Elson, he ran at 34462. So I think the pacer went out a
- 22:26little bit off pace. I think they could have been a
- 22:28second or two off in the first lap.
- 22:30They're hoping for 58 and I think they went out in a 60.
- 22:34And Ben Patterson just timed this to perfection.
- 22:36He just sat in the pack and Callum Ellison sorted on the
- 22:38opposite. He was like right behind the
- 22:40Pacers, pushing it the whole time, so he felt it in the last
- 22:45lap. He just dropped like a stone.
- 22:48And Ben? Patterson stay though, is it?
- 22:51No, no, Ben Patterson just timed it to perfection 200 to go.
- 22:56Like he's just so powerful and strong and I think this could be
- 23:00his distance, the 1500, he's got such a kick.
- 23:03So I think this is his first like big 1500 he's ever done
- 23:08until I just knockout A337. And yeah, it's it's pretty good
- 23:12going. Must just feel so good knowing
- 23:15that you've kind of you've went up a distance and all you have
- 23:19to do is let someone else try and make it fast and as long as
- 23:23you can just be there, you're going to beat them all because
- 23:25you're faster than them. Genuinely, yeah, just out kicked
- 23:28them all such a like oh, doesn't matter how this is going to go
- 23:31once I can hang I can just kicked on demands international
- 23:383K. So this is like the main three.
- 23:40Ki was in the second tier race so Henry Mclucky from Great
- 23:44Britain, he won it in 74364 in a meet record.
- 23:51And second was Callum Morgan from Kander Track Club from
- 23:55Ireland they were he ran A74762 and then third was Jack O'Leary
- 24:01from Ireland. He ran A74850 and this was yeah
- 24:06pretty stacked again. So Henry make, luckily he took
- 24:10it up with like 800 to go and just wound it up.
- 24:13And Jack O'Leary was in second at this time and just couldn't
- 24:18go with him. And then Jack O'Leary sort of
- 24:20got pips coming down the home straight by Callum Morgan.
- 24:25So yeah, all first races of the season for these guys.
- 24:29And Henry Mclucky actually broke the meet record.
- 24:32It was set by some name I recognized.
- 24:38Let me just see if I can find it.
- 24:43Bought. Yeah, like a 743.
- 24:46It is ridiculously fast. And to think Jaco Brown is 717
- 24:52is it's just mind boggling. No, I find so impressive, like
- 24:58especially now that I'm starting to train again and thinking
- 25:01about my own fitness, is how these lads and girls keep up
- 25:06such high cadence under fatigue. So like when they start to kick,
- 25:11the cadence is actually increasing, whereas anyone else,
- 25:16or maybe just me, the cadence is like one of the first things to
- 25:20go, isn't it? And you stride lamp shortens.
- 25:22But for the pros, the opposite happens.
- 25:25They open up and they the cadence takes over and they just
- 25:28get faster and faster. But they just look so smooth
- 25:33doing it. That's the thing I can't get
- 25:34over. Like they're so relaxed.
- 25:36I think we'll Steve Ovett. Shit, yeah, that would have been
- 25:40a long standing record. Done. 39 years.
- 25:44Well. And so I feel like Henry Lucky,
- 25:48he's very under the radar and he was wearing an Adidas Pro kit.
- 25:54So I did ask. I think he.
- 25:56He's war Adidas for a while. I think he must.
- 25:59They must have picked him up a couple of years ago.
- 26:02OK, OK. I think for some reason I always
- 26:04thought he was hooker, but yeah, anyway, could be a big year for
- 26:09Henry. I don't know.
- 26:11Yeah, sure. He's ran like. 30 and lower
- 26:13something as well over 5 case. Calm games of it only shows the
- 26:185K13 O1, don't know if that and if that 743 translated to a low
- 26:2613 I'm not too sure. But anyway, piece fit.
- 26:34Now we're on the main events anyway, the 3000 meter A race.
- 26:38Yeah, the 2nd Tier 1. So when I rocked up, I seen the
- 26:43two boys from Fly Carve and I was like, because I didn't know
- 26:46what paces they were going and because it was the second tier,
- 26:49I was like, I wasn't sure what way this is going to be run.
- 26:51And they were like, Oh yeah, 60 sevens.
- 26:55And I was like, look, that's probably good.
- 26:58Like my goal was 60 sixes. But it's better to like start
- 27:02conservative and then just like feel strong because you can
- 27:04always feel like you're always better picking up the pace in
- 27:07the last lap rather than dying at death, so.
- 27:10Just pace. They pace the race prior as
- 27:12well. Yeah, the two races prior.
- 27:15Wow shit it went international 3 by a mile.
- 27:19It went like international B race and then the A race, yeah.
- 27:25How far did they pace the first two races?
- 27:27Like the first mile or? Jack definitely done a mile in
- 27:32all of them. Maybe they went longer in the B1
- 27:35because it was just that little bit slower.
- 27:37Gee, we say, he must have been what?
- 27:39What's he going through up a mile in the international race?
- 27:42Like 410. OK, I'm not.
- 27:46I didn't say. I'm not sure.
- 27:47But it would have been, wouldn't?
- 27:49Yeah, yeah. Maybe a kilometer, a mile.
- 27:52I don't really, I can't remember.
- 27:54He was he was checking his watch at like random points round as
- 27:57well. Like not even the 200 or the 400
- 28:00split. He must have actually been
- 28:01looking at his pace or. The hamstring.
- 28:08Go on. Sorry.
- 28:09Erin So yeah, it's at 67. And I was like, that's alright,
- 28:13I'm going went off. And I think I found myself like
- 28:174th and in on the rail and I was just conscious that they were
- 28:22actually going that pace because they didn't want them really
- 28:24dropping off. And that's, that's, that's just
- 28:28over 825. Say yes, 77.
- 28:33Is it 7-7 to 40, 49? So nineteen 24822 pace, is that
- 28:40right? Yeah, yeah.
- 28:41Around that, it was just over eight 20s.
- 28:43Yeah. So I like, and I wanted to be
- 28:47between 8:20 and like 8:15. That would have been like a good
- 28:50day for me. And so yeah, went off and then I
- 28:54think it was 2 laps in, I sort of noticed a gap between him,
- 28:59the pacer and the the lad who was leading it out.
- 29:03So I was just conscious that because the pacer could easily
- 29:07just drop back. So I just sort of made a move
- 29:09and just tucked in behind Jack. And then I sort of just kept
- 29:11pushing him a little bit. Well, not pushing him
- 29:13physically, but just like kept on his heels to know someone was
- 29:17there following him. And I think we started off 60
- 29:20sevens, 60 sixes and then my last I hit 260 fives and then it
- 29:25finished off with a 64. So basically I kept on pushing
- 29:28it. Jack dropped out where after a
- 29:30mile and then it was me for. You almost dropped him.
- 29:34I was the Cam Myers. Like shoving him off the track.
- 29:38Out the way mate, you gone? I felt good.
- 29:40I did feel very good. I felt relaxed going through the
- 29:441st K mile and yeah, I wasn't expecting to feel that good.
- 29:49It was a bit weird because like in the Tuesday before I was
- 29:52doing 3 by AK and I was hitting them 240 fives, but I was like,
- 29:59how am I going to hit like stick these back-to-back?
- 30:02And so it's crazy. What like when you're actually
- 30:04like freshen up, you sort of forget.
- 30:05I don't know what it feels like to be fresh when you're freshen
- 30:09up in the race situation when you're nomi owed, you're
- 30:11bicarbed, beetrooted, caffeine gel, all that sort of stuff.
- 30:17That's another thing. So I had an hour and a half
- 30:19drive and the race was at an awkward time.
- 30:22So it was at 25 past 1. So I was trying to like delay my
- 30:28breakfast. So that was like my big meal
- 30:31before. But then I normally eat my
- 30:33breakfast at like 8:00. So I had to sort of push it back
- 30:35to like half nine, 10:00 and but it worked out well.
- 30:39Then in the car, I took the beetroot shot, Namio shot 3
- 30:44hours out, drove on another little bit, pulled into this
- 30:48farmer's gateway just outside Belfast.
- 30:52And I'm starting mixing my bicarb and he comes out and he's
- 30:55like, he's like, what is this idea?
- 30:57And I was like, oh, I'm just doing this because he wouldn't
- 31:01have understood what I was saying.
- 31:02I was like, I'm just, I've a race in there.
- 31:04I just need to eat this. I start laughing at me.
- 31:06And he's like, yeah, right. I just went off this day.
- 31:09And so I was two hours out, took the bicarb and then yeah, 20
- 31:14minutes before the race I took him Bix and 40 gram carb and
- 31:21caffeine gel. So the mix, the caffeine on the
- 31:24carb and I feel like that just keeps me like I am sort of
- 31:28getting a bit hungry closer to the race.
- 31:31Did you say 40 or 20 minutes out?
- 31:3320. Yeah, it's pretty close.
- 31:36Yeah, I don't know. Yeah, that's the way.
- 31:38Because I feel like it takes 15 minutes to kick in or something.
- 31:42I think that's right. Yeah, I don't know.
- 31:45And. What was the warm up protocol?
- 31:48Yeah, So the warm up was 15 minute jog and then I don't 2
- 31:53minute threshold, one minute flow, 2 minute threshold, one
- 31:57minute flow, one minute threshold.
- 32:00And then I just don't like 3 sort of hard enough strides
- 32:03because like it's only a three Ki feel like you can sort of
- 32:07like sort of get a sweat on basically just to get your like
- 32:12body produced in a bit of lactate and sort of get a second
- 32:14win for the start of the race. And yeah, anyway, the race
- 32:17happened. Umm, uh, pacer dropped out.
- 32:20I sort of took it on. I think we're knocking 60 fives
- 32:23and then coming down dub with one lap to go.
- 32:25Your man. And he sort of took me and yeah,
- 32:29I just my legs just genuine couldn't go that fast.
- 32:32I actually just couldn't, umm, hang on to him.
- 32:35So he opened up a bit of a gap. He ended up running 815.96, I
- 32:41ended up running 816.93. And then third was German
- 32:45Maloney who ran at 820.61. So yeah, look, I can't really
- 32:50complain. Like I've done 2 speed sessions
- 32:53and to be able to like sort of knockout them 60 sixes, it's
- 32:58it's, it's a good sort of good place to be in.
- 33:00And this time now hopefully like next year, I'll be in the
- 33:05international race, even though like my coach rung me after and
- 33:10he was saying that the A race was probably a better race for
- 33:13me to be in the international race.
- 33:15It's sort of split up into three groups.
- 33:17So you had the good guys rolling like going for that like 740.
- 33:21Then you had another group hitting that low 8 minutes and
- 33:26then you had another group around like between that 8:15
- 33:29and 8:20. And I feel like I would have
- 33:31been stuck in no man's land between like that second group
- 33:35and third group. And like you might hang on to
- 33:38that second group or you might just die a death.
- 33:40So for like a season opener, like not knowing where I'm
- 33:45really at, I feel like the A race was like probably the best
- 33:50case scenario and the 40 the best results scenario as well.
- 33:54I think without the paces it's like doesn't bode as well, but
- 33:58like how how lucky to have the fly Club guys there.
- 34:03Exactly, exactly. And it does make such a
- 34:05difference just being able to talk in behind them, sort of
- 34:08shut off and just go with the flow.
- 34:12And you said 815 to 820 was like a good result.
- 34:16And obviously you've come in right in the middle of that.
- 34:19But you did run the front of the race for probably the hardest K
- 34:23of the race. So you've you've got taken
- 34:26through a mile, which yeah, fair enough.
- 34:28But then from 1600 to 2600, you're the one who's then picked
- 34:34it up running 6665 for that duration.
- 34:37So I think you run a really good race.
- 34:40It was, it was exciting to see you on the front when he went
- 34:43past you at 400. Becky was like, we're watching
- 34:45it together and she was like, no, don't let him.
- 34:48And I was like, no, this is good.
- 34:50He's he's gone. He's gone like early enough for
- 34:52Owen to get on the back of him. I was like, go on now and get on
- 34:55him. And it's so annoying.
- 34:56Then, like after the race, like, I watched the back twice and I'm
- 34:59like, like, why didn't I go with him?
- 35:01Like, like, I should have just, like, given a little bit more.
- 35:05Yeah. Yeah.
- 35:06And like, you don't after the race, you don't really, like,
- 35:09know the hurt you were in. But look, yeah, first race this
- 35:13season. I can work on my speed, I don't
- 35:17know if I'll get another 3K in before the end of a few 5 KS now
- 35:22but like this just makes me super excited for the 5K in
- 35:26Belgium in two weeks time. I just need to stay injury free.
- 35:30That is the name of the game now.
- 35:32Just keep on just tipping along and you look.
- 35:38Pretty fit as well. You look pretty lean.
- 35:41Oh no, I need it. I need to get down a little bit
- 35:44more to like a race weight. I'd say I was carrying a little
- 35:47bit of unnecessary weight, but that can drop off in in July.
- 35:57Oh, I thought to ask you, how do you rate your own PBS now?
- 36:02Which is your strongest of most favorite you think?
- 36:07I wish the 1409 was recognized. I think this 816 leaves me in
- 36:15that ballpark of like a 1410 to a 1420.
- 36:21It leaves me in there. I should be able to because like
- 36:23when you think about it like I was running 245 a kilometer when
- 36:27you I've 5 seconds, I can take 5 seconds off that to run my 5K
- 36:36pace, which is going to leave two 50s is like a 1410 if you
- 36:39get me. So, but you obviously have
- 36:41another 2K to run. But I did feel very good for the
- 36:45first like 2K. I'm switching it to tag on
- 36:49another 3. Yeah.
- 36:52What would you say is typical if if you were to add maybe only
- 36:56two or three seconds AK on? I reckon maybe it's a bridge
- 36:59from three to 5K. Yeah, I don't want to get ahead
- 37:02of myself. Look, I just need a good one on
- 37:06the board and like even I'd be happy with like a 1420 to be
- 37:11honest, just to have one on the World Athletics that it gets me
- 37:14into other races. Just super annoying that the
- 37:161409 isn't. But regarding the PB, I'd know.
- 37:19I still think that legal ones. I think the 2944 is still higher
- 37:24points on World Athletics. The 10K.
- 37:29I'd love to give a half a batch bash at the end of the year to
- 37:33see what I could roll on that portion.
- 37:37Yeah, I just need to take off the 5K.
- 37:40Hagan. Well, yeah, we'll see what
- 37:42happens. I don't know.
- 37:45I think the 5K takes priority over the half.
- 37:48Like I've won goal in the 5K this year.
- 37:52And so yeah, that's just, I'm not going to fix it on the time,
- 37:58obviously, but just get a good one under my belt and then cross
- 38:01country will happen. And that's sort of just the real
- 38:04fun. So what's what's the score with
- 38:08Belgium then? How are you?
- 38:09Are you flying there? Yeah, so I've got another this
- 38:12week of training and then next the week after that, I fly on
- 38:17the Thursday. So I work Thursday, I'm flying
- 38:20Thursday evening, get there on Friday.
- 38:23So I get there Thursday evening, Friday, just chill.
- 38:27And then it's a really weird event.
- 38:29So it's in like this big stadium.
- 38:32So apparently wind isn't a factor and it's just trying to
- 38:36get in the race. So as soon as like that result
- 38:39got my result here got posted on World Athletics.
- 38:42I am was straight onto the me organizers saying, Oh, I've just
- 38:46ran eight 5th 816. Can you please use this result
- 38:49to grade me into like a 5K? Because at the moment they're
- 38:54using a 1430 and I feel like that if if 816 and 1430 you're
- 38:59in two different races and I'm with the Belgium meet, there's
- 39:03like there's going to be loads of races.
- 39:04So apparently like you could be racing at like half 12 at night.
- 39:11So ideally you want to be in the main program, which I think you
- 39:15have to run sub 14 for which I'm not going to be in or one of the
- 39:20earlier after program ones because you don't want to be
- 39:25racing at like 11:00, which is a possible, there is a possibility
- 39:28I could be end up racing at 11:00, which is just I feel like
- 39:31it's totally alien because I'm normally like fast asleep by
- 39:35then. So that's the only drawback.
- 39:38But that will be on Saturday the 23rd and then Sunday I've I fly
- 39:45out, I fly back home on like Sunday evening.
- 39:50So like that's the plan. So get a few more little speed
- 39:53sessions in try and make 5K pace for your comfy.
- 39:57And then yeah, again, just give it a whack.
- 39:59Nothing to lose. You reckon the taper done your
- 40:02wonders from the 160 K week you carry on.
- 40:07Yeah, I might. One of the lads in the club,
- 40:11Reggie, he was saying that. Reggie.
- 40:16You always seem something always seems to happen to you before a
- 40:20race, sort of makes you freshen up.
- 40:23So before Valencia I rolled my ankle and I was, I was fucked.
- 40:27I was struggling for like a day or two.
- 40:29So I didn't run. So that freshened me up.
- 40:31Armah. I think I got something happened
- 40:35before Armah as well. And yeah, I got sick.
- 40:39And then this one here I just well, by Coke prevented me from
- 40:44cooking myself. So it's like I push seal it too
- 40:49high and then I pull it back just in time.
- 40:53So yeah, I don't think I'll be doing any crazy mileage or
- 40:57anything. Now leading up to that.
- 40:58I think this week was I think I've had two weeks of one, one
- 41:02111 kilometers. And so the same again would be
- 41:09would be probably, probably what I'll go for.
- 41:11And then, yeah, just pull it back a little bit.
- 41:13Race week. Just sharpening the tools now.
- 41:17Yeah, yeah. Super exciting.
- 41:20Cool, wonder if the Belgium one will be streamed.
- 41:26Maybe Knox? Is that much shit going on?
- 41:28Yeah, I don't know, because, yeah, because again, there's so
- 41:31many races, but the stream for Belfast is pretty cool.
- 41:34They did. I've liked the drone shot when
- 41:36they'd like swoop in and so they look at the back of the pack.
- 41:39It was cool. Yeah, the I was waiting for the
- 41:42commentators to, like, give you some acknowledgement because
- 41:45you'd been on the front for like a lap or something, and they
- 41:47were just doing small talk, you know, about the meats or about
- 41:52something irrelevant. And then they finally, like
- 41:55mentioned Owen Smith. Yeah, well, hopefully next year
- 42:00aim is to be in the international race.
- 42:03Let's go a couple more results to round off.
- 42:08There was a Meath in International Pegaso sitter
- 42:11different say in Italy and I only mention it because Nadia
- 42:15Bataclasi again cutting down the distance run to 1500 meters in
- 42:20403.75 S Yeah, she can do it all seconds not bad USA had.
- 42:36So that's almost like 3 weeks in a row or at least three of the
- 42:39past four weeks. They had their Rd. mile
- 42:41championship and the road 5K championship and now God knows
- 42:46why they run this distance. So I was trying to think like is
- 42:48there a mile conversion? But it wouldn't mean anything.
- 42:52The USA Road 25 K championships happened and the reason why I
- 42:58include it is because so a guy, Andrew Collie born in 114 flat
- 43:042nd place is listed as anonymous participants.
- 43:09I was meant to go and find out who anonymous participant is
- 43:12because he's beaten Casey Clinger in 3rd so it must be
- 43:17someone who's seriously good. It's like when you rock up to
- 43:21park run but forget your barcode.
- 43:24Or don't run a time you're overly hit.
- 43:27Please but see. Don't scan it.
- 43:30It says here on Google anonymous participant often cited as Batty
- 43:36Tiscay. So maybe he wasn't American so
- 43:39they just that. Would make sense.
- 43:43Often cited. Yeah.
- 43:45Sometimes. Referred to Notorious for
- 43:49rocking up to USA track and field champs and broad champs
- 43:54and running him. Without his barcode.
- 43:57Thoughts on this as an event? Don't get it?
- 44:01It's. A bit relevant.
- 44:03Yeah, it'd be a strange race to run as well.
- 44:09Like I mean, what did they run about?
- 44:11Around 62 minute half marathon pace.
- 44:16So you're a sub three minute case.
- 44:19Yeah. So I think 1:15 is, is that 15
- 44:23minutes times 5? Yeah.
- 44:27I got it. What's it used for?
- 44:29Even to walk around saying you're the national champion in
- 44:33the 25 K, what does it mean? We have the per 32K, which is a
- 44:38bit of a unique thing, but it's the old school like 20 Miller
- 44:42race and it's normally run in the lead up to what used to be
- 44:46at a point in your training that would sit well for the marathon.
- 44:52So it's like a a race that people might do as a lead up
- 44:55event to the marathon. But yeah, National 25K champs is
- 45:00a bit strange. That the path 1 is that go along
- 45:04the river but towards mainland so And do they do like quite a
- 45:07few loops over the bridge and back or something?
- 45:10Yeah yeah 33 out and backed loops from the Burstwood Club
- 45:16Club rooms 5. KF 5K back thereabouts 3. 3
- 45:20have. You done that.
- 45:22I've done it, I tried doing lactate testing each lap as well
- 45:25and I just butchered it. I think one of them it didn't
- 45:28work and then I was waiting too long and I just made a balls of
- 45:31it. But yeah, I have.
- 45:35Yeah, 32 K That would sit nicely as a nice specific long run in a
- 45:38marathon. Back end of a marathon prep
- 45:40wouldn't. It and it's in May, it's this
- 45:42time of year, which as you probably are realizing like well
- 45:46and probably already know, but like it's such a nice time of
- 45:48year to be running in Perth. The ladder came second.
- 45:52His name is MO Batty and he's I think he's run like AD three
- 45:57level in college. Him there's a good forum on
- 46:01let's run that's just going off. But yeah, I think he's the like.
- 46:11I wonder is Casey Clinger like feel like he should be winning
- 46:14that. So he must be in heavy marathon
- 46:16trainer. He must have won coming up.
- 46:19Maybe not. I mean, you would think he would
- 46:22win it, wouldn't you? I don't know who the other guys
- 46:25are, in fairness. Sam Chalanga is a pretty top
- 46:29NCAA runner. May they're not.
- 46:34No slouches holding 3 minute. You know this is 206205 marathon
- 46:39pace anyway. The women was won by a familiar
- 46:43name, Emma Grace Hurley 12251, Cassandra Parker 2nd and Biru
- 46:50Teyat de Geffe, 3rd. I thought we had one more set of
- 46:56results, but that might just be us.
- 46:58I meant to say in reference to the, the Albert Park, the
- 47:02Lakeside 5K rather there's, there's 25 KS on the road in the
- 47:08UK which people would go to from by me, Chrysleton, which was
- 47:12like last week or something. And I just pulled the results up
- 47:16for comparison in terms of depth.
- 47:18And there was like, what is it three people sub 15 in
- 47:26comparison to that lakeside one. And this is like a very, very
- 47:29popular race where people go to run fast.
- 47:32And then the other one is mid Cheshire and OK, granted that
- 47:37one is a little bit deeper. There's well, on this particular
- 47:41instance, 27 people sub 15, but still the winner was Adam Craig.
- 47:47Do you remember that name? 14 O 9.
- 47:50So doesn't doesn't quite stack off.
- 47:53It just shows like the talent in Melbourne and the amount of
- 47:56clubs that there are. It's a great place to run.
- 48:02Not a great place to go to the beach though, right We're oh.
- 48:07Those results should say were brought to you as they always
- 48:10are by Bix Nutrition. If you'd like 20% off your
- 48:14nutrition, visit bixvitamins.com and use the code Double I.
- 48:21Tried. I tried the new I got some sense
- 48:25some of the new strawberry one the strawberry gel.
- 48:28The salted strawberry. Yeah, that's a good one.
- 48:32That's the the pick I reckon. Hey.
- 48:37I haven't tried the Apple 1 yet so that's going to be my long
- 48:40run this week. I went for it.
- 48:42I went for the strawberry one this week and yeah.
- 48:48It's a little treat, yeah. There's no trouble like you
- 48:52almost want to just I think I'm due, you know, I packed a couple
- 48:58in the back of my on a ride on a Saturday.
- 49:02And yeah, I'm always trying to work out when it's the
- 49:05appropriate time to treat yourself.
- 49:07That's. Good.
- 49:11It goes down like an actual dessert.
- 49:16I I actually to be fair, given that they're all sat there in
- 49:20the cupboard, I admittedly haven't been using them as much
- 49:24as I should. Have.
- 49:27Why? They're.
- 49:28Like. It's.
- 49:30Disgraceful on some multiple. Box.
- 49:35I mean, the fact that you've admitted it, kudos to you for
- 49:40for, you know, passing the comment.
- 49:42But like, do you want to say Owen or?
- 49:46Ryan, do you met the people that would die to be in this
- 49:49position? Yeah.
- 49:50And. I can understand before, like
- 49:53people like there's a financial element to their nutrition and
- 49:59you know, like it, it does add up.
- 50:01And so sometimes it's like difficult parting ways for the
- 50:04few bucks per gel. But you know that it's so
- 50:07important to be taking it. We all know that it's so
- 50:10important to be taking it for injury prevention, general
- 50:13health, all those sorts of things.
- 50:17I have been taking the drink mix but yeah the gels I need to get
- 50:22better with. I mean the drinks mix is that's
- 50:24not a bad supply. It's a done the same thing,
- 50:27isn't it? So like in your sessions, do you
- 50:31take any like carbon at all? I put the one scoop of the drink
- 50:38mix in the bottle. So what's that?
- 50:3925 grams? And then I'll just sip on that
- 50:42before the workout, after the warm up and in between the reps.
- 50:46But to be fair, even when you're doing that, you probably only
- 50:49drink like half the bottle in the duration, don't you?
- 50:52So it's not much at all. Because I've started like even
- 50:57if I'm just one session in the day, I don't just take a gel
- 50:59halfway through the session just like top up and just prevents
- 51:07you being totally depleted. Yeah.
- 51:10Isn't that the directional guidance?
- 51:12I mean, we're talking out of turn here.
- 51:13We should have, we should have a conversation with someone.
- 51:16But it's like you just want to avoid getting into that red
- 51:19area, like where you've you've burnt your tank too low.
- 51:23Because then there's like a, it's like with lactate and the
- 51:26energy recovery cost, you're just going to incur a bigger
- 51:29recovery cost. Yeah.
- 51:30If you go, let's say on your fuel tank, if you go below that
- 51:33three, if you go below the last quarter, the price you pay for
- 51:38the recovery, it's just a lot more than if you talk to GEL,
- 51:42which prevents you going below that last quarter.
- 51:45You just recover way quicker. It's just that last bit.
- 51:49I mean, in Ryan's defense, there has.
- 51:51I haven't seen a hot cross bun in life.
- 51:54Weights, not. Easter.
- 51:58And I've done 2 by 5K on Saturday as well.
- 52:01I should have had one in between that.
- 52:07Speaking of first meals, our our pet arrived and had his first
- 52:14meal yesterday. Oh.
- 52:16Here I've seen a TikTok. I'm so funny.
- 52:19This woman gave her snake a little like mouse or a white rat
- 52:24and then didn't they become friends?
- 52:27So the snake actually didn't even eat no mouse in the end.
- 52:31Yeah, they became friends. Fearful Dean is grabbing his
- 52:37snake as we speak. Well, pardon the pun is.
- 52:40That a metaphor. Hopefully.
- 52:44He's. Not, Oh, no.
- 52:45Way is tiny fella. Yeah.
- 52:49Wait, he's. A He's a He's a growler.
- 52:55Not a shower. That's unreal.
- 53:00Have the kids named it? No, but still we're still
- 53:04working on the on the final name, but.
- 53:08Have a soway the snake or something?
- 53:11No, actually, no, maybe not that yet.
- 53:16Chapman, Gasich. Rosa.
- 53:21Oh yeah, is. That a boy or a girl?
- 53:24Well, I'm learning a lot, but apparently it's difficult to
- 53:28tell and so you have to wait till they're about two or three
- 53:31if you want to, and there's people you can take them to to
- 53:34find out. So what's what's the length
- 53:38right now? About a foot, maybe about 20 to
- 53:4930 centimeters I'd say, and I'll get to about a meter.
- 53:53And it obviously won't bite. Just just not.
- 53:57Unless you and not unless you smells dinner on you.
- 54:00OK. OK.
- 54:02OK, yeah. So yeah, there you go anyway.
- 54:06All right, apologies for that listeners but well, those those
- 54:09who watch via the video, newbie and bonus content this week
- 54:15Discovery Channel, where are we? I might as well tell you about
- 54:20my 2 by 5K. Whilst rare on my week in
- 54:23general, I had my highest mileage in the rebuild so far,
- 54:2892K, which actually resembles somewhat of a normal running
- 54:33week with no double s. I was thinking what?
- 54:36What do you reckon is the highest feasible volume you
- 54:39could do off singles only without it becoming like stupid?
- 54:46130 maybe? Reckon somewhere.
- 54:49You run every day. That's that's that's the nice
- 54:51but. That was six days, so that was
- 54:54six days running, one complete rest day and I had 90K on the
- 54:59bike as well, so it's a good week really, to be fair.
- 55:02How many K running? 92.
- 55:06Yeah, probably like 1-10 you reckon on.
- 55:09Yeah, what was the long run? 20. 21, so 90 minutes, yeah.
- 55:15Yeah. So like would you bump that up?
- 55:17So if you bumped up to two hours like you're going to get a good
- 55:20bit more there. Probably, but I just, I want to
- 55:24just keep doing what I'm doing until I feel like I'm stagnating
- 55:27and then, you know, change one thing at a time rather than
- 55:30trying to like just rush stuff now.
- 55:33Yeah, I think that sounds like a great week. 90 odd KS and 90 KS
- 55:37on the bike like there's nothing nothing wrong.
- 55:42With them, yeah. Yeah, it's got, it feels like
- 55:46it's going well the end. So Tuesday is a threshold
- 55:51session, Thursday LT1. So that was given the results
- 55:57like 3 thirties, 2 by 16 minutes at three 30s, which probably
- 56:03there should be a gel in between each of those 16 minutes really
- 56:07as well because that's 32 minutes worth of LT1.
- 56:11A gel wouldn't go and miss there and then Saturday morning is
- 56:15like a long threshold session. So it's probably a nose
- 56:19replicates like a base period to typical LT2 sessions, 1 short
- 56:25reps, 1 long Rep and then an LT1 session and just an easy 90
- 56:30minutes for the quality. So yeah, going well, the two by
- 56:365K was 1616 the first one and then three minute jog slash walk
- 56:46and 1610 the second one felt fine, like felt proper threshold
- 56:51like. And I was confident enough to
- 56:53push from the start. So like there's a few of the
- 56:56boys there who were going to be running around 3 eighteens or
- 57:00three 20s. And now I just wanted to like
- 57:03test myself a little bit and push from the start to see what
- 57:06I could do, which is a good thing because it shows I guess
- 57:10I've got some confidence back. Like a couple of weeks ago would
- 57:13have been sandbagging at least the first Rep to make sure that
- 57:17I got through it. But the only thing is I'm, I'm
- 57:22got that turnover. Like I felt fine in terms of the
- 57:26effort but I just couldn't physically speed up because my
- 57:30legs wouldn't take over any quicker.
- 57:33But it was conscious that Thursday was big with the bike
- 57:36threshold in the morning and the 32 minutes LT1 in the evening.
- 57:40So just take it and move on I guess.
- 57:44That just comes with time as well, like you can't increase
- 57:47mileage and intensity at the same time.
- 57:49So you're better off man. You're playing played a long
- 57:52term game and you're going the right way.
- 57:55It will come. And that's a question on when
- 57:58you're talking about double S or extend your long run work on
- 58:02your speed. Like, what do you?
- 58:05Yeah, I mean, I'll be having the chat with the coach about what
- 58:10you want, what you think is the smartest thing to do.
- 58:14Give it what your goal is. But like, what are you hoping
- 58:18to? I think you're feeling fitter
- 58:20every week, right? So you wouldn't look to change
- 58:25too much, would you? No, no.
- 58:29I think RAF is of the mindset of just get that threshold back to
- 58:33where it was as quickly as possible and then maybe change,
- 58:36start adding like overspeed and stuff.
- 58:40Makes sense? Not that you said as much, but
- 58:42that's just what I'm inferring from the train and it's all
- 58:45being targeted around like LT2 largely.
- 58:48And I think you're it was only when was it 5 weeks ago that you
- 58:58were really back doing some 2 workouts in a week.
- 59:02Would that be fair? Yeah, yeah.
- 59:04So it's all happening pretty fast.
- 59:06Yeah. And then here we are again, two
- 59:11weeks out from the next race. So it's fun, just good sign
- 59:18better the bridges efforts. So but was racing in two weeks.
- 59:23Oh yeah, that'll be a big recap. That's a big weekend.
- 59:28What else? I hope that was I was going to
- 59:30say from my week. I was doing the warm up on
- 59:32Saturday and surprise surprise, I got there late 6:00 AM meet
- 59:38and I got there at 6:15. But I was like, it doesn't
- 59:43matter because people fart around, changing shoes, doing
- 59:46the stretches and all that for like half an hour anyway.
- 59:48So I figured I'll just do the job by myself and then whilst
- 59:52everyone's doing all the drills and stuff, I'll catch up to
- 59:55them. Goes to the toilet at the end of
- 59:57the jog and then had taken the fob off my car key, you know, so
- 1:00:02like all the dangly keys, you don't have to carry them with
- 1:00:04the end. It's just the unlock lock thing.
- 1:00:10And it was in, you know, in your shorts.
- 1:00:11You have them invisible pockets sometimes on like the inside the
- 1:00:14net. And it was just in there.
- 1:00:16And as I left the toilet, it was about 800 meter jog back to like
- 1:00:20the warm up area and then. I was like tapping around for
- 1:00:25some reason and I noticed the key fob wasn't there and I was
- 1:00:28like, Oh no, like I'm already playing catch up.
- 1:00:31I didn't need to be going back now looking for this key
- 1:00:34somewhere. It was still dark, so it was
- 1:00:36like half six. So I'm retracing my steps over
- 1:00:39this 708 hundred meter little patch, staring at the floor,
- 1:00:44can't see anything. And then I figured it was on
- 1:00:49Lake Mungo, like around where the Park Run starters.
- 1:00:53So I was like, oh, we'll Park run will be starting in the next
- 1:00:56hour or so. Someone will find that I'm just
- 1:00:59going to go and get my workout done and worry about it after.
- 1:01:03Someone will hand it in to like the park run volunteers if they
- 1:01:07find it. So once it conceded to this,
- 1:01:10goes back to the car to change my shoes.
- 1:01:12And then of course, I realize I can't open the bloody car to get
- 1:01:15my shoes so go back to retrace my steps again.
- 1:01:23Like I'm just going to have to find this thing, whether it
- 1:01:25takes me 5 minutes or an hour. And then for some reason I felt
- 1:01:29it, it just slipped out of the pocket and was just hanging
- 1:01:33around, you know, in like the bait, the knickers part of.
- 1:01:38And just. Just bouncing up up against all
- 1:01:41sorts of things. Just knocking around in there,
- 1:01:44yeah. Surprised you didn't feel it?
- 1:01:49Yeah. I'd actually don't know what
- 1:01:51that that says, but I'd rather not do the analysis on it.
- 1:01:55But it was in there at. Least your Gooch isn't as
- 1:01:57sensitive as mine at the minute. It might have given you some
- 1:02:06light relief or something, all that knocking around.
- 1:02:08Probably what it needs a bit of therapy there.
- 1:02:14See, that was the funny story of the week.
- 1:02:17What else have we got going on here, Dean?
- 1:02:19How was how? How was the ride?
- 1:02:22The group holding up on a Saturday morning seeing people
- 1:02:24were sat in a few personal bests.
- 1:02:27Oh, it was a disaster. Actually.
- 1:02:30It wasn't a good way. And this is so we, so it's the
- 1:02:40usual group was there, but I think people were just feeling
- 1:02:44some people were feeling quite good.
- 1:02:46And So what that meant was people weren't rolling turns
- 1:02:50that well. And I don't know if I was
- 1:02:52contributing to this, but you know, over that Mount Henry
- 1:02:55bridge, no, whatever the bridge is in Freo, I found myself at
- 1:02:58the front. And then you press up over that
- 1:03:00hill, you know, sometimes you would ride away from people and
- 1:03:02you would get told off. So I could feel myself playing a
- 1:03:07bit of a role there. And then by the time we got to a
- 1:03:10particular section where we normally roll turns, the group
- 1:03:13split into three. And a few of the few of the
- 1:03:17gentlemen that normally control the group were shaking their
- 1:03:21heads because it had all just fractured.
- 1:03:23And this group, Oh, and there's a, the thing with cycling groups
- 1:03:27is that the collective always beats the individual because you
- 1:03:32can save 30% when you're sitting in and then you just roll turns.
- 1:03:35But when the group splits apart, the strongest ones are obviously
- 1:03:38at the first part and then they just roll off the front.
- 1:03:41And I was at the back of the group at the time.
- 1:03:44And so I tried to help Coco bridge the gap and, and Andrew
- 1:03:49and I helped Coco along anyway, which we did.
- 1:03:51We we closed everyone down. And then we got to this part
- 1:03:54where we intersect with the road and I waited for a car and
- 1:03:59Andrew got upset with me because I've waited too much for this
- 1:04:01car and it ends up being the slowest car in the world.
- 1:04:04And we were stuck. You know that part where you do
- 1:04:06these? The amount had the you know
- 1:04:10those 6 by 1 K marathon loops we've done.
- 1:04:13Yeah. Four.
- 1:04:14Yeah, that section, yeah, when you're on the road there
- 1:04:18basically I got stuck by a car the whole way.
- 1:04:20Andrew waited for me, no one else did and we lost the group.
- 1:04:23And so we then took shortcuts to try and rejoin the group and,
- 1:04:30and in taking those shortcuts, we, we thought we, we thought we
- 1:04:34just missed them. Turns out we hadn't because
- 1:04:36Andrew got a puncture trying to take one of the shortcuts.
- 1:04:39Oh. My.
- 1:04:40God blame didn't blame me for the puncture.
- 1:04:42I was very kind. I would have blamed me, but he
- 1:04:44basically towed me all along each highway to catch up to the
- 1:04:48the group after we'd been stuck behind this car.
- 1:04:50We then got a punk, he got a puncture.
- 1:04:52We then took another shortcut down South Perth and then I got
- 1:04:57the puncture and so then I've then just walked my bike back to
- 1:05:03work hoping there would be something at work that I could
- 1:05:07fix my bike with. There wasn't.
- 1:05:08So then I just had to actually Uber to Osborne Park, and then I
- 1:05:12jogged home from Osborne Park in my Lycra and socks because I did
- 1:05:17some Mother's Day shopping. From in what footwear?
- 1:05:21Socks. Socks.
- 1:05:23Oh my God. Why is the new footage of you
- 1:05:28running up the PSP in your socks and lycra?
- 1:05:31Well, someone saw me. Yeah.
- 1:05:32One of the triathletes caught me.
- 1:05:34She was running home. She just was like, what's going
- 1:05:37on here? It's hard to explain, but.
- 1:05:41And then that's why you saw me. I think you commented.
- 1:05:43I just saw. Check my Strava.
- 1:05:46You commented on my run. So then I I ran into work to
- 1:05:50yesterday to fix the puncture I. Was wondering what what was
- 1:05:56going on there. That was my bike, so it's a bit
- 1:05:59of a bit of a messy week. Needless to say I think I jogged
- 1:06:03about 60 odd KS. Would have ridden 200 KS.
- 1:06:07Oh well, by whichever means you get it in.
- 1:06:11It was, yeah, wasn't the most smoothest of of weeks, but yeah,
- 1:06:15it got something done. So there's no post dried coffee.
- 1:06:20No, no, it wasn't. No, of course it was just a sad
- 1:06:24side of the fears. Me just I went over the bridge,
- 1:06:28he ran over. It's has got a bit of a bite to
- 1:06:30it, the bridges, the the Narrows.
- 1:06:34That eighth K, yeah, that's also where where I broke my arm that
- 1:06:38time as well wasn't. It on the way down, yeah.
- 1:06:41Yeah, Bastard Bridge. We'll call it the Bastard
- 1:06:44Bridge. Yeah, they claimed my rear tire,
- 1:06:47so there you go. When you have some running news
- 1:06:53for us. Yeah, so Running News is powered
- 1:06:59by Gnomeo, the performance supplement trusted by Anders
- 1:07:03Ongren, Cole Hawker, Connor Mance, Isabel Doyle and many
- 1:07:07more. Drink Gnomeo and prepare to
- 1:07:10outperform. So got bad news this week, boys?
- 1:07:13There's no cross country in the next Winter Olympics in 20-30.
- 1:07:20They haven't ruled it out. I think it's in in the Alps in
- 1:07:24France 2030 and after that it's in Utah.
- 1:07:30So if there's anywhere there's going to put running cross
- 1:07:33country, they're going to it's going to be America and Utah.
- 1:07:35So they. Weren't they?
- 1:07:36Yeah, we haven't lost hope, but yeah, that's what we all aim
- 1:07:43for. But yeah, I think it's pretty.
- 1:07:46Like I can understand in one way, but I feel like you're
- 1:07:50just. I I can't like what, what's the
- 1:07:54argument not to put it in because like, for example, the
- 1:07:56Summer Olympics allowed break dancing like in terms of in
- 1:08:02terms of Winter Olympics, like what, what's the argue?
- 1:08:05What's the argument not to put it in like?
- 1:08:07It's like because certain certain sports aren't competed
- 1:08:12globally and aren't considered like a world sport right?
- 1:08:15Or maybe the like what's the criteria?
- 1:08:18I don't understand what it wouldn't mate.
- 1:08:20It just make it'll make the Winter Olympics more inclusive
- 1:08:23because it will invite them African countries, it'll get
- 1:08:27them involved for yeah, they might.
- 1:08:32Physically find it hard to find a course runnable in Alps during
- 1:08:37winter though. That's cross country.
- 1:08:39It's meant to be hard. Yeah, true.
- 1:08:41Like the court, the course I ran in Ireland last November, the
- 1:08:46mud bath. Like it's meant to be hard.
- 1:08:49Like you could easily run that shit in snow.
- 1:08:52Surprise, the brands aren't all over it.
- 1:08:54They'd be able to develop and market a snow spike.
- 1:08:58Even. Yeah, yeah, just put longer
- 1:09:00spikes in. They have.
- 1:09:02It's called 15 mil spikes. It says says that to be an
- 1:09:08Olympic sport, it must be played on snow or ice.
- 1:09:12It must also be governed by an International Federation, adhere
- 1:09:15to the Olympic Charter and world anti Derby code and show global
- 1:09:19popularity. I mean it takes all of those as
- 1:09:22I think other than obviously it's not played on ice.
- 1:09:24So the question is, is it played on snow?
- 1:09:26Can it be played on snow? Yes.
- 1:09:30I think is it be gosh or what? Like the one in Poland that was
- 1:09:34completely like, I mean, it's muds in and around the snow, but
- 1:09:37well, that's pretty much snow. Where was the Winter Olympics?
- 1:09:41Where the hell this year? Milan.
- 1:09:44It was Milan. Yeah, just gone.
- 1:09:46Yeah. All that was like manicured
- 1:09:48snow, like it wasn't natural snow.
- 1:09:50It was all like man made. So surely you could make a cross
- 1:09:53country. A man made cross country course
- 1:09:55would like some snow where it's like a bit fluffy, where it's
- 1:09:59going to be harder, and then other snow where it's just more
- 1:10:01compact. Like I think it is possible to
- 1:10:04do. And yeah, I think it'd just be
- 1:10:07better for the Winter Olympics in general.
- 1:10:09But like it meets all the other criteria I I And if the question
- 1:10:15is whether or not it can be played on snow, like wouldn't it
- 1:10:18just be not put forward as an option then?
- 1:10:23Yeah, how is it even being considered then?
- 1:10:26Doesn't make sense. But yeah, I did say that the
- 1:10:33notice. As with probably anything these
- 1:10:36days, it'll come down to some sort of financial reasoning.
- 1:10:40We're in it. If it made sense financially,
- 1:10:42they'd do it. The next item, Phil Sussman, and
- 1:10:47then if you see any, done a post talking about an injury which is
- 1:10:50sustained. So he won't be participating in
- 1:10:54the European Marathon Championships, which he'd
- 1:10:56recently been announced for, which wasn't shy of controversy
- 1:11:00in itself. As we mentioned they'd confirmed
- 1:11:035 athletes, British Athletics that is.
- 1:11:06We're being part of that team. Then Sussman says he's taken a
- 1:11:10step back to recover from his injury, won't be there.
- 1:11:14And then 24 to 48 hours later, they announce Ellis Cross is
- 1:11:19replacing him in the team, which is good because like we said
- 1:11:22last week, Ellis went to Istanbul chasing the points.
- 1:11:26He'd run 210. But it also doesn't make
- 1:11:30complete sense, which goes back to lack of transparency in the
- 1:11:34selection criteria and just not making things clear.
- 1:11:38Because there's actual rankings produced by European athletics
- 1:11:44and you can filter by marathon. And when you do this, you see
- 1:11:48Jake Smith and Alfie Manthor rank above Ellis as per the
- 1:11:56rules or ranking system which they've decided to implement.
- 1:12:02And Alice gets asked. With the way British Athletics
- 1:12:06is run, I genuinely wouldn't be surprised if they were like, oh,
- 1:12:11Alice's family in Birmingham, he can stay with them.
- 1:12:15We save a bit of money. Mr. Hobb, though, we have a
- 1:12:20proposition. We'd like to select Alice, but
- 1:12:23only if you can house him for the weekend.
- 1:12:26I'm happy for Alice. Like he like he's sort of played
- 1:12:29the game like he's he done that Istanbul half marathon on the
- 1:12:33sole chance of getting selected and he has run a faster
- 1:12:38marathon. Dan Jake and Alfie and it was
- 1:12:42his debut. So you presume he will go
- 1:12:46better. So yeah, like I obviously I'd
- 1:12:52love to see Jake there because I like just hearing his story,
- 1:12:55having him on the pod. Like I'm just a big fan of Jake
- 1:12:57now. And but like Ellis Cross, like
- 1:13:01either either you'd be happy. I'm just happy.
- 1:13:02Like they should be sending another person along with Alice.
- 1:13:05They should have a full team. What's your opinion on Sesame?
- 1:13:11Like is it worth the trade off of he done London knowing he was
- 1:13:17a little bit bad? Like, like now, he misses a
- 1:13:21major championship. Yeah, the video announcement did
- 1:13:26make me think this sounds very amateur hour, as in like
- 1:13:30something I'd do, you know, basically he he knew the injury
- 1:13:34was there, but he chose to like run through it, which is
- 1:13:38literally what I'd done last year.
- 1:13:39But you just usually you see and you think of pros as making like
- 1:13:44these very sensible decisions for like the longevity of their
- 1:13:48career. And they don't really and say
- 1:13:52don't take risks. But yeah, he he obviously
- 1:13:57thought he was going to run a great race at London.
- 1:13:59So it's probably a little bit sour that he didn't get the
- 1:14:02result that he wanted neither. And now he has to take a step
- 1:14:06back with injury and it it. It's not surprising given what
- 1:14:11did he do last year Round 3 didn't he done Amsterdam into
- 1:14:15London and Valencia was? It done London first, then
- 1:14:20Amsterdam into Valencia, was it? And then, yeah, he's sort of
- 1:14:28stuck in that like 207208. He hasn't sort of gotten the
- 1:14:32edge to go past it. Because even then, Valencia back
- 1:14:38into London again in April, that's like the first
- 1:14:41opportunity you would get to run a marathon again, isn't it?
- 1:14:45So he's gone straight from those three, straight back into
- 1:14:48another marathon block again. Apart from Seville, like Seville
- 1:14:52could be an option early February.
- 1:14:54But like Seville, London, if you're from England, your Great
- 1:14:57Britain, you're going to pick London all day long.
- 1:15:01This dare say this injury hopefully will prove like a good
- 1:15:06thing for him. So it'll just be like a hard
- 1:15:08reset. Give his body the rest it needs.
- 1:15:10Maybe he can come back from a different angle rather than just
- 1:15:13marathon block to marathon block. 100% like I guarantee you
- 1:15:18this break just give his body a bit of rest.
- 1:15:21Like the body gets injured for a reason like you're pushing it.
- 1:15:25It just needs a bit of rest to come back.
- 1:15:27And I bet you he'll I nearly put money on him getting under two O
- 1:15:317 on his first marathon back once he.
- 1:15:35Doesn't actually you see where he's been spending this time now
- 1:15:39instead? Now where is he?
- 1:15:42In the saddle, No. Riding horses.
- 1:15:51Just going back to the Winter Olympics, I just saw some
- 1:15:56comments by is it Kirsty Coventry, the IOC president, who
- 1:16:05said no summer sport, no all season sports will be included.
- 1:16:08And that was in reference to a suite of sports that were put
- 1:16:13forward. So cross country, trail running
- 1:16:15cycle across gravel cyclic. So I think that the issue is
- 1:16:19that it opens the door if you include.
- 1:16:23So we're we're I'm just looking at cross country and think cross
- 1:16:25country would be a great fit at the Winter Olympics.
- 1:16:28And because it doesn't currently have a home at the Summer
- 1:16:31Olympics, it makes a lot of sense.
- 1:16:33And I think Bri bringing more countries into like or bringing
- 1:16:37almost, you know, part of a continent into the Winter
- 1:16:40Olympics makes a lot of sense. But I think holding true to the
- 1:16:45theme of ice and snow is why they're choosing to stay down
- 1:16:50that path. But so I don't know seems I can
- 1:16:55understand that. Can be held in the ice and snow
- 1:16:58though. That's the.
- 1:17:01Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's what I would be
- 1:17:04advocating for if I was just pushing for cross country.
- 1:17:07Like if it was, if it was. Snowing in Ireland, it'd be held
- 1:17:10in the ice and snow. Yeah, like it was snowing in
- 1:17:12America. It probably wouldn't be.
- 1:17:14Probably called it off. Or Australia.
- 1:17:19What was the name Kirsty Coventry?
- 1:17:21She wants to get herself to a UK or Irish cross country scene, go
- 1:17:26round two or three races and then tell, try and tell herself
- 1:17:30it's not a winter sport. Right where we are, Shanghai
- 1:17:37Diamond League going, you want to do these?
- 1:17:41Yeah, so this first Diamond League of the Year taking place
- 1:17:46the weekend, I think it's the 16th, which is the Saturday in
- 1:17:53Ireland anyway, yeah, pretty stacked fields.
- 1:17:57We'll start off with the women's 1500.
- 1:17:59You've got a truckload of Aussies and there is.
- 1:18:04We're going to hype up this rematch and there is going to be
- 1:18:07Sarah Billings, Abby Caldwell, Dorcas Ewoi, Linden Hall, Burka
- 1:18:14Halem. Then you've got Claudia
- 1:18:16Hollingsworth and Jess Hall. Take two.
- 1:18:18We've got a few Americans, Emily Mackay, Gracie Morris, but yeah,
- 1:18:25super, super stacked and I put money on an Aussie winning this.
- 1:18:30Oh. That's a big goal, yeah.
- 1:18:34Oh, but then Halem so good, isn't she?
- 1:18:37That's so funny. Look, you, you, you know how
- 1:18:41Jess and Claudia have raced each other recently?
- 1:18:43Like very kind of par for par. And then look at the difference
- 1:18:47in their world rank and Jess is ranked number one and Claudia
- 1:18:5045th. Claudie's that long?
- 1:18:53Oh no, there's one for 111 Taryn perks and I can't.
- 1:19:01I should pick Yeah out of Halem. I think Halem could win it.
- 1:19:10Or you wish to be honest like this so hard.
- 1:19:13Or Daguma. You say Jess as well.
- 1:19:15Ranking at the minute. Yeah, but no one else has run a
- 1:19:19race. You have had your track season.
- 1:19:22We have world indoors. I mean actually.
- 1:19:26What's the name there? Saren Berry.
- 1:19:28She, I reckon she could be. She's good as well.
- 1:19:34And the Guma, she's an 800 isn't she?
- 1:19:36That's why she hasn't got a PB or world ranking, but she's good
- 1:19:39over the 800. I'll go, Claudia, that's what I
- 1:19:44want to go. That's like such a good pick
- 1:19:49because it's like anyone outside of Australia, well outside of
- 1:19:54following a straight this summer of Australian athletics wouldn't
- 1:19:57be picking that, I think. How many Diamond League races
- 1:20:02has she even done? Claudia Like 2 maybe?
- 1:20:07Probably I just think she's Jessel's number.
- 1:20:11She's very fit and she is probably she's a better kick.
- 1:20:16The Aussies look at how punching above their weight they are
- 1:20:19there. They've got the most
- 1:20:20representation in that field with 55-IN-1 race.
- 1:20:26No, you're saying? Catching above our life.
- 1:20:28To like, look China. But look at the the world
- 1:20:33rankings. Yeah, true.
- 1:20:35So Jess is ranked number one in the world currently Linden 7,
- 1:20:42Sarah Billings 19. I be called World 29th, Claudia
- 1:20:4645th. Guys, there's been no races.
- 1:20:50Not many people don't in. Like people don't pick indoors
- 1:20:53either. Like half them don't do it.
- 1:20:55But I reckon the qualification window would go if I had a look,
- 1:20:59I reckon it'd be sit back. You reckon that like the your
- 1:21:04ranking points don't roll off that quickly?
- 1:21:08Does it reset every year? Oh, I didn't think so.
- 1:21:12I think it, I think that's the world rankings for this year.
- 1:21:17Oh, you reckon? Yeah, oh, surely.
- 1:21:26But yeah, huge failed. Yeah, has to, because freaking
- 1:21:3250 pagans better than whole. Yeah, but you have to in order
- 1:21:37to maintain your world ranking in the middle distance.
- 1:21:40You have to. It's your average average score
- 1:21:44of your best five races. Those people probably haven't
- 1:21:49had five races. Yeah.
- 1:21:51So it's yeah. So faith is third.
- 1:21:58So I think that's the that's the difference is like, I think it's
- 1:22:04like and and you you get I think bonus points depending on what
- 1:22:07they are. So the national champs and those
- 1:22:11sorts of things give you a lot more bonus points.
- 1:22:15But yeah, no, they're all the big names are still there.
- 1:22:18Jess Hall, chip, Chu chip, keep the a gun hilt, Hunter Bell,
- 1:22:21Healy Hall, Hailu Hailum. So no, no Aussies.
- 1:22:27Aussies are legit. Punching it's a compliment
- 1:22:34though in even in in this discipline compared to say all
- 1:22:38the others this that on paper might be a good conversation as
- 1:22:42well. What is the strongest discipline
- 1:22:46which Australia represent male or female?
- 1:22:50And this could well be it, couldn't it?
- 1:22:53Women's 15. Did you see the men's 4 by 400
- 1:22:58in the real life? Heard by Rhys Holder.
- 1:23:01Run like the 10th fastest split of all time or something.
- 1:23:05Yeah, they were taking it up to South Africa and Botswana.
- 1:23:09It was, it was those three and then daylight for 4th, but it
- 1:23:12looked very good. I'm lucky not to finish second,
- 1:23:16but yeah, probably this I would say, I would say.
- 1:23:20In the four by four, close second maybe?
- 1:23:24In the men's 800 you've got a few.
- 1:23:27It's really weird. There's no Europeans, there's
- 1:23:31one Lithuanian one in the women's 1500, but there's a few
- 1:23:35here in the men's 800. So you've got Adrian Ben from
- 1:23:39Spain, Peter Ball from Aussie Australia, Luke Boyce from
- 1:23:43Australia, Mark English from Ireland, You've got Wycliffe
- 1:23:47Kenyamal from Kenya, Yanis Menzine from France, Brandon
- 1:23:54Miller from the US, Ben Patterson from the UK.
- 1:23:58So he's gone from Belfast to China in a week.
- 1:24:02That is rough. I wonder what like sort of
- 1:24:05appearance fee you get for a Diamond League.
- 1:24:07I wouldn't have thought it was that much it.
- 1:24:10Must be worth as well. Yeah.
- 1:24:13Unless you might just want to see China as well.
- 1:24:16Good experience he's. A tourist.
- 1:24:20But I put money on Patterson here, having one under his belt,
- 1:24:23nearly dropping down the distance even though Peter Ball
- 1:24:26is so fit. I'll go pay the ball then.
- 1:24:29Yeah. Who are you going, Ryan?
- 1:24:31And we need to have a peek in the women's 15, too.
- 1:24:35I'll go Jess Hall before you ever go.
- 1:24:38Yeah, I'm going. That's Sarin Beret from
- 1:24:40Ethiopia. No love for Dorcas?
- 1:24:46It's been a long year for Dorcas.
- 1:24:48We've reaped our rewards. Cash those chips in and in the
- 1:24:52800. What do you do?
- 1:24:55You, you buy, sell at the top. So we've we've sold our Dorcas
- 1:24:59shares. Take our take our money and run.
- 1:25:02Reinvest in at the bottom. Yeah, ball for the men's.
- 1:25:10Next, the women's 5K. So you've got a truckload of
- 1:25:16Ethiopians, Kenyans and then a couple of Aussies sprinkled in.
- 1:25:20So I'll just pick out the names. I know you have Melissa Courtney
- 1:25:27Bryant from the UK doing the same trip has been passing from
- 1:25:30sunny Belfast to to China. You've got Rose date, Rosie
- 1:25:35Davis Medina, ESA from Ethiopia, Faith Kippy Aegon.
- 1:25:43She's a fourteen O 5 to her name.
- 1:25:45Shit, she's opening up her season and Marty skyring.
- 1:25:50I'm cannot wait to see what she does.
- 1:25:53I feel like she's going so under the radar and she's after making
- 1:25:56a big jump this year. And then you've got really
- 1:25:59Walcott Nolan, and I'm going to go out on a whim here and say,
- 1:26:05hey, TPA Gun might win this one. Yeah, you'd think so.
- 1:26:10The only question mark is obviously we haven't.
- 1:26:13It's first up after a big spell, so you never know.
- 1:26:20What worries me here is there's two Kenyans near the end,
- 1:26:24Yanisha Shamika, she's run 1551 and then you've got another
- 1:26:30Alima Tilea, she's got a 1617 beside her name.
- 1:26:35So I'm sorry, how the hell did these girls even get into this
- 1:26:38meet? Yeah, I must have done something
- 1:26:42impressive in training. They must be, yeah.
- 1:26:45So they might be on for Big Peeves.
- 1:26:47Yeah, there's 12 Ethiopians in that field alone.
- 1:26:52Wonder what the flight That must be a short flight, but yeah, we
- 1:26:56can't really look past 50. You can't.
- 1:26:59I'm trying to but I can't. It's 10 hours if.
- 1:27:03If I was then you would go is it a cell?
- 1:27:09Yeah, like they're just way faster and like, it's sort of an
- 1:27:14awkward race for Rose Dave. Oh, well, a few of them, other
- 1:27:16Ethiopians, they're all around the 1430.
- 1:27:19So you just gamble and just hang on the back of them probably.
- 1:27:23What's the is the is Rose Davies is her Does she have the
- 1:27:30Australian record? Is it 1431, the Aussie record?
- 1:27:33Yeah, yeah. I think the hard part though is
- 1:27:36the like, I remember these races in the past.
- 1:27:40Do you remember watching Matt Ramsden run?
- 1:27:43I think he won like a national 5K title and went over to,
- 1:27:48there's a couple of China diamond leagues trying to post
- 1:27:51times and you just remember they're like pretty muggy.
- 1:27:55Air quality is not great. Like they don't typically play
- 1:28:00out like they do some of those European diamond leagues where
- 1:28:03they're one in low thirteens or under.
- 1:28:07So I I as much as you like a your comment on about Modi sky
- 1:28:12ring, like that would be the exciting part for us to
- 1:28:16spectate, but it's probably not going to be the IT might not be
- 1:28:19the might not have the ability to run fast.
- 1:28:21Yes. Optimal conditions, yeah, we'll
- 1:28:27jump down to the men's 3K so we can we're start field.
- 1:28:32You've got Mohammed Abdullahi from Germany, He's a 737 guy.
- 1:28:38You've got friend of the show Andrews Almgren, opening up his
- 1:28:42season. Never thought I'd be saying that
- 1:28:44words. He's got a 731 to his name.
- 1:28:49And Santiago Cartufi from Uruguay, he pops up every now
- 1:28:52and then. Ranil Cheriot, Timothy Cheriot.
- 1:28:55The two brothers. Name's by the way.
- 1:28:58OK, Troph, sorry. So I'm just offend them, my
- 1:29:05Uruguayan brothers, you see. The two chariot brothers are in
- 1:29:09there and who? Are they brothers?
- 1:29:15We spoke about this. Yeah, in our eyes there and
- 1:29:20settle Donald Ozzie and this one he's A7, he's run 734 they've.
- 1:29:26Got the. Ballet the cabinet well, like
- 1:29:30he's a steeple chaser and see what he does, you Hoon.
- 1:29:34I think he's a super chaser as well from Ethiopia.
- 1:29:39What's gamma ninefold? There's a few gammas.
- 1:29:44Do we go Shirley on green? Yeah, you lump on him, dear.
- 1:29:48Unless some of these Kenyans are in form.
- 1:29:51I think so. And then if you're set
- 1:29:54O'Donnell, you literally just hang on the back.
- 1:29:57Of his his mentor. Yeah.
- 1:30:02So funny that when he said, Oh yeah, he just grabbed me on the
- 1:30:05cooldown, he was asking a load of questions, Seth and Omron.
- 1:30:13When you're looking at some of these times, like I keep looking
- 1:30:15for like a bit of a magical barrier 730, like, you know,
- 1:30:21your 32nd 2 hundreds and then you realize in Yakob run 13
- 1:30:26seconds quicker than that. I know.
- 1:30:31Like imagine seeing a 717 in those numbers.
- 1:30:34It blows them out of the water, Yeah, Which is what?
- 1:30:37More? That's like a second and a half
- 1:30:39faster pillar. Who's your tip?
- 1:30:42Who's everyone thinking Arm green?
- 1:30:46Romanticize over arm green and go with that one, yeah.
- 1:30:51I'll go balu Bahani bahani. You're on the Swedish train,
- 1:30:58Owen. Yeah, London arm run.
- 1:31:04Well, look forward to watching that.
- 1:31:06It should be on a decent time for us as well.
- 1:31:08It'll probably be in Saturday night for you, Aaron.
- 1:31:14Yeah, I'll get to what I'll sure you can watch the highlights of
- 1:31:16an anyway. Oh no, you're behind, aren't
- 1:31:19you? So yeah, it'll be Saturday
- 1:31:21afternoon because I assume it's like going to be an evening meet
- 1:31:26in local time, innit? Next item on the news list,
- 1:31:31Hailish McCall Gum was taking aim at British Athletics
- 1:31:35because. So she's done a tweet reading
- 1:31:38why the men's road 10K times qualify for Birmingham, which is
- 1:31:42the European champs 10K, but not women.
- 1:31:47So she's obsessed about the fact that women, in order to qualify,
- 1:31:52they have to have run in a women's only 10K race in order
- 1:31:56for that time to be valid. Whereas obviously men get the
- 1:32:01opportunity to run both in male only 10,000 meter races and also
- 1:32:07mixed races. So I can't see what she's
- 1:32:11saying. The opportunity for women to
- 1:32:13actually get these times on the board is, if that's the case,
- 1:32:16severely limited because how many 10,000 meter track races
- 1:32:22are there? We've spoken about it before
- 1:32:24with that sound. Running one over in the US seems
- 1:32:27to be almost like the only one all year.
- 1:32:30And then Rd. races where they separate genders.
- 1:32:34I can't. I don't know if I'm being
- 1:32:36stupid, but off the top of my head, where does that happen?
- 1:32:41There's not many. I can't think of many you'd.
- 1:32:43Have to go out your way. So that does feel very harsh on
- 1:32:48the women in order to qualify. Like what are they supposed to
- 1:32:52do? And then obviously the actual
- 1:32:53time qualifier in itself is going to be fast.
- 1:32:57So the chance to actually run that time, even if there was
- 1:33:01plenty of female only races, is going to be hard.
- 1:33:06It's such a shame that like, why do athletes need to call these
- 1:33:10things out? Yeah, but when they should just
- 1:33:15be focusing on training and they probably feel like, well,
- 1:33:19there's that little attention on it.
- 1:33:21If we don't say anything, who is going to like, stand up and,
- 1:33:25like, support us? It's such a shit situation.
- 1:33:29That's the saddest part is, yeah, I think they are being
- 1:33:32forced to call out threats in their own position, expose
- 1:33:41themselves to scrutiny when all they're doing is just trying to
- 1:33:47bring light to something that, yeah, you'd you'd hope.
- 1:33:50I don't know, it just doesn't make a lot of sense, does it?
- 1:33:53Is this UK Athletics or World Athletics?
- 1:33:56Oh, I'm not sure. To be fair, I wouldn't put a
- 1:34:02past UK Athletics to be honest. I just I assumed it was UK
- 1:34:06Athletics but probably kill of me world.
- 1:34:10Athletics. Yeah, World Athletics wouldn't
- 1:34:13do something like this. They're better than that.
- 1:34:18Would World Athletics just take in the European Championships?
- 1:34:22Would they just take ruling over European Athletics?
- 1:34:25Or would European Athletics have their own separate stuff going
- 1:34:30on substantially? Could be European athletics
- 1:34:32thing as well. Yeah, I'm not sure.
- 1:34:35Anyway, it's a bit of a joke, so yeah, deadline 70th of May and
- 1:34:39decisions will be the 24th of May.
- 1:34:42Did you have a word in the rear on the weekend I.
- 1:34:45Said I was like please please please please please.
- 1:34:50What, Whilst you were half stepping?
- 1:34:52Jack No. No.
- 1:34:59Double Trouble, I said. I said I had one and it was
- 1:35:02inspired by a few performances this weekend.
- 1:35:06It was about and I need you boys to hold me to account if I ever
- 1:35:10go down this road because I would hate for myself to go
- 1:35:13there. But I understand that happens.
- 1:35:16Excuses for races like I think the fact that running has become
- 1:35:22so popular through social media and Instagram and TikTok, which
- 1:35:26is obviously the representation of a perfect world, whatever
- 1:35:31it's showcasing, whether it's like family life, relationships,
- 1:35:36bloody how much money people have got.
- 1:35:39You only see the best side of things on there, don't you?
- 1:35:42And now that running has made its way onto these platforms,
- 1:35:46everyone's singing and dancing with PBS and amazing sessions
- 1:35:50and marathon blocks and friends having coffee and everything's
- 1:35:54positive, which is great. But that then forces people to,
- 1:35:59when they have a race or result which isn't what they wanted,
- 1:36:04maybe what they'd vocalized or publicized, they feel the need
- 1:36:08to make up all these excuses as to why it wasn't what they
- 1:36:12thought it was going to be. And I would actually love it.
- 1:36:17It would just be so refreshing. It would be completely different
- 1:36:20content if someone just went on there and went, I ran a fucking
- 1:36:24stinker. I can't believe I thought I was
- 1:36:26that fit or I can't believe I was on here saying I was going
- 1:36:30to run this. Like, look at my third K.
- 1:36:32It's a disgrace. What was I trying to do?
- 1:36:36Or you don't even have to go that far.
- 1:36:38Just don't. If you start going towards like
- 1:36:43the wind or the heat or like there's a fine line between what
- 1:36:48is a fact and what is an excuse. Like, obviously these factors
- 1:36:52can influence the results or the performance, but if they're
- 1:36:57legitimate, they're almost unspoken factors, as in everyone
- 1:37:01understands if it's a hot day, you're not going to run that
- 1:37:04fast or if it's very windy, it's going to impact your pace.
- 1:37:08But if the results or the race is seemingly normal and then
- 1:37:14you're there scrambling around talking about all these kind of
- 1:37:18like minor factors as to why the performance didn't go to plan,
- 1:37:23it's just not a great look. And I'm not sure that people are
- 1:37:27aware of that when they're doing it.
- 1:37:30But you can kind of see through it.
- 1:37:33And I almost feel sorry for them because they've probably feel a
- 1:37:37little bit pressured to justify and explain these things.
- 1:37:42But yeah, if any of my races don't go to plan, just put it on
- 1:37:48me and ask me why. And I'll say because I was an
- 1:37:52idiot. Like when you think about it
- 1:37:55like you do, you put your body under so much stress and you
- 1:37:59need everything to go so right to actually have a good day.
- 1:38:03Like it's all right to have a bad 1.
- 1:38:06I feel like some people like when you're on social media,
- 1:38:10when you're like very public about what you do, you can
- 1:38:12nearly like self sabotage. As in like like the reverse
- 1:38:18taper. Like that's the biggest load of
- 1:38:20bullshit I've ever heard of my whole fucking life.
- 1:38:23Yeah, I was because I knew I was going to do this as a double
- 1:38:26trouble, but and I was trying to understand what is actually the
- 1:38:29difference between an excuse and just a genuine fact.
- 1:38:32Because it's very blurred. And the only logical conclusion
- 1:38:36I could come up with was an excuse is something which you
- 1:38:41were in control of. So like, if you've went out too
- 1:38:46hard or if you've done any of these things, which was the
- 1:38:50control of that was purely yours and it's your fault, then that's
- 1:38:54an excuse. You need to just look inwards
- 1:38:56and take accountability for making a silly decision.
- 1:39:00But if it's something else, like someone tripped you up or
- 1:39:03anything which has happened to you which you couldn't control,
- 1:39:06maybe that's a legitimate reasoning as to why the race
- 1:39:09went a certain way, I think. That's a good way to look at it.
- 1:39:14I like that. Like, because I think you don't
- 1:39:19want to get to a point where you're not critiquing or trying
- 1:39:24to unpack your performance so that you learn from it.
- 1:39:28And then, yeah. And then it's probably.
- 1:39:31And then the best way to do that is owning what you believe are
- 1:39:35the things you could control and saying whether or not you made
- 1:39:40the right decisions around those things, and then acknowledging
- 1:39:43if there were things outside of your control that they may have
- 1:39:49played a part to. I think I think where it gets, I
- 1:39:56think some of the area we're straight into is about like
- 1:39:59sometimes there might be like recurring times where people
- 1:40:04don't perform in line with their own expectations.
- 1:40:06And that's what it's all about. And it's and if that keeps
- 1:40:10happening, then you probably want to try and reflect on what
- 1:40:13how you're. Measuring certain parts of what
- 1:40:17you believe should be your performance and, and whether or
- 1:40:19not you're falling foul of that. Like I remember for a long time
- 1:40:24I would train out for this particular race and I was really
- 1:40:26just focused on outcome rather than anything else.
- 1:40:29And I kept coming the same spot. It was actually HBF.
- 1:40:33I just come 5th every year, do the same training every year.
- 1:40:37It, I think I'd be improving this time of year.
- 1:40:40But in fact, the weather was just cooling off and that was
- 1:40:42definitely just part of it. So I was probably tricking
- 1:40:45myself into believing my fitness was better than what it was and
- 1:40:50not really understanding Physiology that much and
- 1:40:52understanding I had no idea of training zones and all these
- 1:40:56like, yeah, all these metrics to develop fitness and all those
- 1:41:01things. And I just, yeah, find excuses
- 1:41:04for why things didn't go the way they were.
- 1:41:06And then got a coach, did like race specific sessions.
- 1:41:11So then had an idea of actually where my fitness was ahead of
- 1:41:14the race, did some race, the race simulation stuff, which
- 1:41:18meant that by the time I did go and do those races, the results
- 1:41:21that came weren't a surprise. They were what we expected them
- 1:41:26to be. Yeah, the Self sabotage 1 is an
- 1:41:32interesting one. It's almost like a reflection of
- 1:41:36someone I don't know feeling that much pressure to do
- 1:41:42something that they need to look for a way, a reasoning to help
- 1:41:48them if they don't do it. Which is just such a shame
- 1:41:51because you're almost working against yourself before you've
- 1:41:54even started. But are you saying Dean the 5th
- 1:42:02is my target HBF? No that wasn't at all related to
- 1:42:08you. This is just person.
- 1:42:09It's just my personal talking about old me.
- 1:42:11This is probably like 5 to 10 years ago.
- 1:42:14HBF used to be a race I used to do.
- 1:42:16I used to come the same spot every year.
- 1:42:18Think I'm changing things but in reality I didn't have a great
- 1:42:22grasp of like I didn't understand what my Lt. 2 might
- 1:42:26be or any thresholds I didn't like.
- 1:42:29I didn't know what a race specific session was.
- 1:42:32I wasn't even doing a park run as an indicator of fitness.
- 1:42:34I had no idea of what my training could look like and how
- 1:42:38I would build fitness over time. So and I was purely just wanting
- 1:42:42to beat people and so I was completely focused on the
- 1:42:45result. And then did you eventually
- 1:42:49break the the 5th place streak? Yeah, yeah, yeah, I did.
- 1:42:57I finished second and my training partner won the half.
- 1:42:59I was in the 12 K and he's like, you didn't win.
- 1:43:02I just shook his head. He's pretty hardcore.
- 1:43:05Chelan dude. He was like, Nah, it's not good
- 1:43:08enough. High performance culture?
- 1:43:12Yeah, good. Reckon that's us.
- 1:43:20Another one in the books. She whiz.
- 1:43:25Yeah, we go again Wednesday for the lactate testing unpacking.
- 1:43:33So we'll see you there. Thanks everyone for being with
- 1:43:35us for another week. Guys.
- 1:43:40Good luck, take it easy. This is easy. 1.3 debates on.
- 1:43:49Shoes and carbon plates? Is it threshold or just steady
- 1:43:52pace? World champs Trials.
- 1:43:53Who's in shape? Who's peeking early?
- 1:43:55Who's late to the gate? Stories from.
- 1:43:56Sessions that nearly broke us and races that taught us
- 1:43:59patients to focus
