- 2:42Speaker 4: to Mara Boggs from the Charleston Earry Alliance also representing
- 2:46Speaker 4: the American Legion Post twenty to talk about some Veterans
- 2:49Speaker 4: Day stuff. How you doing, Marrow, Welcome to the show.
- 2:51Speaker 7: Good Monday morning, Dave.
- 2:53Speaker 4: Last time you were in the studio, it's probably like
- 2:56Speaker 4: seventy degrees or so.
- 2:57Speaker 7: Well, that's right, it's November.
- 2:58Speaker 4: What what happened? Why did you let this happen? You know? People,
- 3:02Speaker 4: why did you let this happen?
- 3:03Speaker 7: I didn't mean to it just slipped right in, all right.
- 3:06Speaker 4: So you were telling me off the air about your involvement,
- 3:09Speaker 4: you know, and you've done a variety of different things
- 3:11Speaker 4: in your career. As I said, you're Charleston your alliance now,
- 3:13Speaker 4: but you're involved with the American Legion Post twenty lifelong
- 3:17Speaker 4: member because you are you are a veteran, of course,
- 3:19Speaker 4: so talk talk about your involvement with the American Legion.
- 3:23Speaker 7: Well, I'm a lifetime member of the American Legion. I'm
- 3:25Speaker 7: a combat veteran, and I'll tell you I just really
- 3:28Speaker 7: respect what the Legion does for God and country. That's
- 3:31Speaker 7: their motto and that's what they do every day. They
- 3:34Speaker 7: support veterans, military families, those in need, and they represent
- 3:38Speaker 7: the best of America. So I'm here today to represent
- 3:41Speaker 7: Post twenty of the American Legion. They're hosting along with
- 3:45Speaker 7: Mayor Goodwin and several other esteemed veterans. They're hosting a
- 3:48Speaker 7: Veterans Day parade the eleventh day, the eleventh hour. We
- 3:51Speaker 7: commemorate Veterans Day every November, and so this is their
- 3:55Speaker 7: eighty fourth consecutive parade and ceremony, and it kicks off
- 3:59Speaker 7: at eleven am, goes down Capitol Street, takes a left
- 4:04Speaker 7: on Coarrier to Court and back to the river Front,
- 4:07Speaker 7: and then it'll be followed by a short ceremony commemorating veterans.
- 4:11Speaker 4: And the good news is is that the weather is
- 4:13Speaker 4: going to be better. It's going to be cold, but
- 4:15Speaker 4: it's gonna that's not gonna be doing what it's doing
- 4:17Speaker 4: right now.
- 4:18Speaker 7: I think it's a balmy forty degrees dress warm.
- 4:20Speaker 4: It's November, that's right. It's what's supposed to be eighty
- 4:23Speaker 4: four years that I didn't realize we'd been going on
- 4:26Speaker 4: that long.
- 4:26Speaker 7: I believe there's there was one year that they did
- 4:29Speaker 7: it virtually during COVID, but they have been commemorating military
- 4:33Speaker 7: service for eighty four years through this parade on Veterans Day.
- 4:36Speaker 7: So it's a it's a pretty special commemoration.
- 4:39Speaker 4: And it's all happening tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow, and it starts
- 4:43Speaker 4: at eleven eleven am. It's to start to you, that's right, Yeah.
- 4:47Speaker 7: And then the ceremonial it'll be short. It'll probably be
- 4:50Speaker 7: around noon at the river.
- 4:51Speaker 4: Talk about the ceremony, what's going to happen there.
- 4:53Speaker 7: So we'll go through the Pledge of Allegiance, national anthem.
- 4:57Speaker 7: We have George Washington JRGC Cadets participating. It's always great
- 5:02Speaker 7: to see the youth, the next generation of military service.
- 5:05Speaker 7: We have Mayor Amy Goodwin, our gold Star mother. President
- 5:09Speaker 7: Rose Shilling will say a few words. Jack van Dijke,
- 5:12Speaker 7: he's a World War Two veteran. He'll be there tomorrow.
- 5:15Speaker 7: We'll have him wrapped up in blankets for sure. And
- 5:18Speaker 7: then we have the Tom Mirabella. He's the head of
- 5:22Speaker 7: the American Legion for the state. He'll be there as
- 5:25Speaker 7: well as some congressional representatives, I believe from Senator Justice
- 5:28Speaker 7: and Senator Capitist Staff. And then we'll hear from Major
- 5:33Speaker 7: General Crane, former Adjutant General of the West Virginia National Guard.
- 5:37Speaker 7: I believe General Tackett will be there as well, and
- 5:42Speaker 7: who knows who else will be there. People just end
- 5:45Speaker 7: up showing up. They just end up gathering for this ceremony.
- 5:48Speaker 7: It's always such a special special ceremony.
- 5:50Speaker 4: It is, and I tell you and listeners have heard
- 5:54Speaker 4: me talk about it for a long time, and you
- 5:55Speaker 4: being a combat veteran, of course you know about this.
- 5:57Speaker 3: Mara.
- 5:58Speaker 4: Nobody's ever given more the West Virginia has in this
- 6:01Speaker 4: entire country. I mean, I mean literally, when you look
- 6:04Speaker 4: at the numbers per capita, nobody's ever given more. But
- 6:06Speaker 4: it's not just about that. It's about the way that
- 6:09Speaker 4: we honor our veterans. I mean, we always always show up.
- 6:11Speaker 4: I know, City of Nitro's got an event. I think
- 6:13Speaker 4: going on this evening, there's going to be all over
- 6:15Speaker 4: the state. There's Veterans Day of activities. If they're not
- 6:18Speaker 4: actually happening tomorrow, summer moving them, you know, to the weekend,
- 6:20Speaker 4: some more people can attend. We believe in celebrating our
- 6:24Speaker 4: veterans in this state.
- 6:25Speaker 7: And all that Nitro event is such a special special commemoration.
- 6:29Speaker 7: I've done that through the years. It's wonderful this weekend.
- 6:32Speaker 7: My sister and I she was she had the cool
- 6:34Speaker 7: job in the military. She was a black Hawk helicopter
- 6:36Speaker 7: pilot in Iraq. We served as Grand marshals in the
- 6:40Speaker 7: Kaiser Veterans Day Parade, because that's where we're from. It
- 6:43Speaker 7: was so wonderful. I mean, the streets were lined with
- 6:46Speaker 7: people waving flags. And you know, in West Virginia, it
- 6:49Speaker 7: seems to me that every day is Veterans Day. Every day.
- 6:54Speaker 7: If you aren't a veteran, you're related to a veteran,
- 6:57Speaker 7: You know a veteran, you love a veteran, and it's
- 6:59Speaker 7: just who we are as West Virginia. So if you
- 7:02Speaker 7: have time tomorrow, come out, wave a flag on the
- 7:06Speaker 7: parade route, or just stop by the ceremony and tell
- 7:09Speaker 7: Avet thank you.
- 7:10Speaker 4: And you mentioned the gentleman who is a World War
- 7:13Speaker 4: Two veteran. And I've got a little age on me,
- 7:15Speaker 4: so I remember everybody's patpall as we call them in
- 7:18Speaker 4: southern West Virginia. Everybody, you know, everybody's grandfather was around
- 7:21Speaker 4: and they were all World War Two veterans, and some
- 7:23Speaker 4: would tell stories, some wouldn't, and that's perfectly except well,
- 7:26Speaker 4: you know how that goes. But through the passage of time,
- 7:29Speaker 4: you know, we're starting to lose that generation, and eventually
- 7:32Speaker 4: we're going to lose more than Vietnam or Korea. And
- 7:35Speaker 4: Vietnam and even you know, on down to Persian Gulf
- 7:37Speaker 4: and so on and sort of because that's can't stop.
- 7:39Speaker 4: You can't stop the clock. But I if you do
- 7:44Speaker 4: have a World War Two veteran that's somewhere in your
- 7:47Speaker 4: life and your family and your church, again they're disappearing
- 7:51Speaker 4: quickly because of time, thank them too, because that's truly
- 7:55Speaker 4: the truly the greatest generation in my opinion.
- 7:58Speaker 7: I saw this morning. I can't can't recall his name though,
- 8:01Speaker 7: I just briefly as I was sitting in the green room.
- 8:04Speaker 7: The last World War Two veteran who was at Pearl
- 8:08Speaker 7: Harbor passed away this weekend. And of course we had
- 8:12Speaker 7: Wetzel Sanders from here, we had Woody Williams and so
- 8:16Speaker 7: many men.
- 8:17Speaker 4: And Julian Sockman who just passed away I think within
- 8:20Speaker 4: the last couple of months, and he was believed to
- 8:22Speaker 4: be the oldest living Marshall graduate as well. He used
- 8:26Speaker 4: to come out to the paint the Capital City Green
- 8:28Speaker 4: events that we do every year and we would always
- 8:30Speaker 4: recognize him and he passed away not long ago as well.
- 8:32Speaker 7: Yeah, so what a model of service that generation is.
- 8:37Speaker 4: Again we're talking to Mara Boggs, representing today American leed
- 8:40Speaker 4: in Post twenty about the Veterans Day activities tomorrow Charleston
- 8:43Speaker 4: Dave Island Show and five ety Live is brought to
- 8:44Speaker 4: you in part by Morga and Morgan, America's largest injury
- 8:47Speaker 4: law firm. Let's talk about the parade routes.
- 8:50Speaker 7: Sure thing. Yeah, So the parade lines up on the boulevard,
- 8:54Speaker 7: goes down Capitol Street, takes a left on Courier to
- 8:59Speaker 7: Courts Okay, goes down Court to the boulevard and ends
- 9:02Speaker 7: at Hadat at Riverfront Park, Okay. And so that's where
- 9:05Speaker 7: the ceremony will right.
- 9:06Speaker 4: Yeah. Can people still get in the parade.
- 9:08Speaker 7: Or yes, you're supposed to sign up, that's through Tommy Wingo,
- 9:12Speaker 7: the head of the Post twenty. But if you just
- 9:16Speaker 7: want to show up in the morning walk, that's completely fine.
- 9:19Speaker 4: Yeah. And it's and I love, as you said, Mara,
- 9:21Speaker 4: that the fact that we're bringing in the younger generation
- 9:24Speaker 4: with the r otcs and things of that nature, because
- 9:26Speaker 4: you know, I think sometimes and this is and I
- 9:29Speaker 4: used to be young, and I know sometimes you just
- 9:32Speaker 4: you know, you see these people in the veterans and
- 9:34Speaker 4: you just you know, you don't think that much about it,
- 9:37Speaker 4: but somebody needs to edge of macatum a little bit
- 9:40Speaker 4: on and I'm sure the folks of the RTC programs do.
- 9:43Speaker 4: About why we are able to do what we do
- 9:46Speaker 4: in this country, it's because of veterans.
- 9:48Speaker 7: In Kanawha County. I'll tell you our junior RTC programs
- 9:51Speaker 7: are just phenomenal. From Riverside to Capitol to g W
- 9:54Speaker 7: to Nitro. Those when you see those kids in uniform,
- 9:58Speaker 7: at least as a as a who served and whose
- 10:02Speaker 7: family was all served, it's special to see that that
- 10:06Speaker 7: they want to step forward in military service, that they're
- 10:09Speaker 7: willing to do that, and it motivates me personally.
- 10:12Speaker 4: Talk about your service a little bit. I mean, you know,
- 10:15Speaker 4: as best you feel comfortable with talk about your service.
- 10:17Speaker 7: I had an amazing experience. I went to I enlisted
- 10:22Speaker 7: when I was in WVU, I was in the reserves,
- 10:24Speaker 7: and then when I graduated WVU, I became an active
- 10:28Speaker 7: duty Army officer. I was an engineer officer, and I
- 10:31Speaker 7: don't know how this happened, but I was always in
- 10:34Speaker 7: combat units. I was in combat units before women, before
- 10:38Speaker 7: it was really opened up. At first Cavalry Division and
- 10:41Speaker 7: then eighty second Airborne Division. I was a jump master.
- 10:45Speaker 7: I commanded a company called the six eighteenth Engineers. We
- 10:48Speaker 7: were in the eighty second and I was the first
- 10:50Speaker 7: woman commander, so fortunate to have that experience. And we
- 10:54Speaker 7: deployed to Iraq. We got the fifteen month deployment. We
- 10:57Speaker 7: were there during what's known as the Search two thousand
- 11:00Speaker 7: and six, two thousand and seven, and we did roadside bombs.
- 11:08Speaker 7: We uh, just were out all the time in Iraq.
- 11:14Speaker 7: And so got back from that deployment, went to DC
- 11:17Speaker 7: as a congressional fellow, where I met Senator Mansion. And
- 11:21Speaker 7: after I got out of the military, we had two
- 11:23Speaker 7: young children. I didn't want to deploy for a sixth time.
- 11:26Speaker 7: I couldn't leave them. I worked for him after that.
- 11:29Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, And that's where a lot of people, you know,
- 11:32Speaker 4: it's where I got to know you is when you
- 11:33Speaker 4: work with Senator Mansion. Now you're doing great things with
- 11:35Speaker 4: the Charleston Airy Alliance as well. So give us the
- 11:38Speaker 4: details again, the time and so on and so forth.
- 11:40Speaker 4: Hit it again about the parade in Charleston ware And
- 11:42Speaker 4: please note that for a little bit of time. If
- 11:43Speaker 4: you come to the city tomorrow, maybe little traffic delays
- 11:46Speaker 4: here and there, some streets closed and so on and
- 11:48Speaker 4: so forth. But if there's anything in the world that
- 11:50Speaker 4: is worth it, it's honoring our veteran. So talk about
- 11:54Speaker 4: the timing again.
- 11:54Speaker 8: Sure.
- 11:55Speaker 7: Tuesday, November eleventh, at eleven am. The parade kicks off
- 11:59Speaker 7: on the Boulevard on Capitol Street, left on Courrier to Court,
- 12:03Speaker 7: ends up back on the boulevard at Head at Riverfront Park,
- 12:06Speaker 7: followed by a commemoration around noon, a Veterans Day service.
- 12:12Speaker 4: All right, Maria Boggs, representing the American Legion Post twenty,
- 12:15Speaker 4: I appreciate you being here and thank you so much
- 12:17Speaker 4: for your service. And you talked about your family and
- 12:20Speaker 4: the people that had served in your family. Thank them
- 12:22Speaker 4: for their service as well.

- 16:24Speaker 10: Generally we get big shots. Typically they're not as stout
- 16:28Speaker 10: as this one. When I say big shot, big shots
- 16:30Speaker 10: of cold ear. But it's it's.
- 16:32Speaker 3: Quick, It's like in one day and out. This one
- 16:34Speaker 3: is a little more prolonged. I mean it's on an
- 16:36Speaker 3: order of about three days in total when you count
- 16:39Speaker 3: Sunday Holiday, Monday Tomorrow morning. And but the moisture typically
- 16:44Speaker 3: that we would get comes up out of the south.
- 16:47Speaker 3: Now this this is a direct connection with Lake Michigan,
- 16:51Speaker 3: and boy, I mean they got a foot of snow
- 16:53Speaker 3: there in the Chicago metro area, and that moisture still
- 16:55Speaker 3: has to wrap around in our neighborhoods and that could
- 16:58Speaker 3: be what kind of sends us so the over the top,
- 17:02Speaker 3: you know, as we go into our forecast for this afternoon,
- 17:05Speaker 3: because we get listen, I think we're geting about an
- 17:07Speaker 3: inch that would be at best, probably even when snow
- 17:12Speaker 3: squalls come by. But you know, it's it's still something
- 17:15Speaker 3: we have we get to get through as we go
- 17:17Speaker 3: to this afternoon, but we still have more snow in
- 17:19Speaker 3: the way, but a lot of this has an opportunity
- 17:22Speaker 3: to sort of melt a little bit because the ground
- 17:23Speaker 3: technically still is warm down there, so it is still
- 17:26Speaker 3: radiating heat.
- 17:27Speaker 4: And again we're talking with Brian Hughes from storm Track
- 17:30Speaker 4: at thirteen and I'll tell you when I drove in,
- 17:31Speaker 4: which is about seven thirty ish, I hit town this twenty.
- 17:34Speaker 4: Roads were fine, but there could be some slick spots
- 17:37Speaker 4: here and there, especially on those bridges and overpasses well.
- 17:41Speaker 3: And that's our biggest concern for this afternoon and into
- 17:45Speaker 3: late this aftern end of the evening is that we're
- 17:47Speaker 3: gonna have we could have a pretty big band of
- 17:49Speaker 3: snow passed by and then that's going to quickly change things.
- 17:54Speaker 3: And that happens to be right at the right at
- 17:56Speaker 3: the midst or end of our drive time home, which
- 18:00Speaker 3: is the biggest concern. And then you know, once you
- 18:03Speaker 3: have one, it is just a you know, it's a
- 18:06Speaker 3: cascade of events. You get one wreck on a bridge
- 18:08Speaker 3: and then it's all shut down for a while. So
- 18:11Speaker 3: this is something everybody's needs, faiths intest. If you can
- 18:13Speaker 3: get our work early go, you can stick around a
- 18:16Speaker 3: little while longer, just anything to avoid the evening commute,
- 18:19Speaker 3: because then after that then we go to the really
- 18:22Speaker 3: cold tents with temperatures down in the teams of the
- 18:24Speaker 3: mountains and the low twenties here, and anything that is,
- 18:29Speaker 3: you know, in liquid form will be freezing, especially on
- 18:31Speaker 3: those elevated surfaces, which, by the way, we talk about
- 18:34Speaker 3: bridges and overpasses all the time, but the number one
- 18:36Speaker 3: place that people get injured is that their back doorsteps,
- 18:39Speaker 3: stepping out on their patio.
- 18:40Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, you're actually you're that is very true.
- 18:43Speaker 4: And I'll tell you a quick story. There's a buddy
- 18:45Speaker 4: of mine in radio in southern West Virginia that stepped
- 18:50Speaker 4: out onto his back deck and slipped and just wasn't
- 18:53Speaker 4: thinking about it. I think it was dark and he
- 18:55Speaker 4: slipped and fell and he he survived, but he had
- 18:58Speaker 4: a I mean he was in a coma for a while.
- 19:00Speaker 4: So this is this is nothing to nothing.
- 19:02Speaker 6: Laugh at No, it's not.
- 19:05Speaker 3: And listen, I've talked to a number of you are
- 19:06Speaker 3: ere doctors, the number of move friends of mine, and
- 19:09Speaker 3: they said, no, listen, when when stone and ice happens,
- 19:12Speaker 3: we don't worry about the recks because we'll get a
- 19:14Speaker 3: couple of those. It's the back porch incidents that happened
- 19:17Speaker 3: because people just aren't thinking and typically they're not wearing
- 19:20Speaker 3: shoes or they're not prepped for anything.
- 19:23Speaker 10: Uh you know that at that point.
- 19:25Speaker 4: So we're under a winter weather advisory here in the valley,
- 19:28Speaker 4: but other areas of the state are getting hit pretty hard.
- 19:30Speaker 4: I mean like like real snowfall, right.
- 19:33Speaker 3: Yeah, we're talking about up around the higher elevations listen
- 19:36Speaker 3: in summer. So it is gonna end up with two
- 19:37Speaker 3: to four inches worth of snow and maybe on the
- 19:39Speaker 3: upper end of it, and then back up the snow
- 19:41Speaker 3: she areas that could be four to six easily, and
- 19:44Speaker 3: you know they're not going to stop snowing there until
- 19:46Speaker 3: Tuesday morning, so this is really an elevation based snow,
- 19:50Speaker 3: and it also be in the first snow of the season,
- 19:52Speaker 3: the ground has a cool enough, so that's why most
- 19:55Speaker 3: of the somer that we're going to see down low.
- 19:56Speaker 3: While it would add up to an inch or two inches,
- 19:59Speaker 3: you're just not probably we're going to see that with
- 20:01Speaker 3: your ruler. But in total, we would have had probably.
- 20:04Speaker 4: That and then tomorrow it's all gone, right, I mean,
- 20:06Speaker 4: we're still gonna have the cold temperatures. We were just
- 20:07Speaker 4: talking about the Veterans Day activities tomorrow in Charleston. It's
- 20:11Speaker 4: all going to be gone. But people want to bundle
- 20:13Speaker 4: up if they're coming out for that tomorrow.
- 20:14Speaker 3: Oh man, it's gonna be It's gonna be a little
- 20:16Speaker 3: rough in the morning, not a little, a lot rough
- 20:19Speaker 3: because we are going to have, you know, the temperature
- 20:21Speaker 3: teams of twenties and that's nothing to joke about. You've
- 20:24Speaker 3: got to have all the big coats out for the
- 20:26Speaker 3: kids in the morning. So yes, be prepared for tomorrow
- 20:30Speaker 3: morning with a cold. But by the afternoon we're in
- 20:31Speaker 3: the mid forties and by the weekend we're in the
- 20:33Speaker 3: mid sixties.
- 20:34Speaker 4: All right, sounds good, Hey, Brian, always a pleasure give
- 20:37Speaker 4: us a I know that I know how most you

- 20:44Speaker 4: us a little tease here. What do you what do you?
- 20:46Speaker 4: And Spencer and the folks scene in the future for
- 20:49Speaker 4: winter twenty twenty five slash twenty twenty six.
- 20:53Speaker 3: On the twenty twenty five side of things, we don't
- 20:55Speaker 3: see anything too exciting just yet. But as far as January,
- 20:58Speaker 3: February and the March, we see those locked and loaded.
- 21:02Speaker 3: It's probably gonna be very similar to last year's winter,
- 21:05Speaker 3: which was not much of anything leading.
- 21:06Speaker 10: Up to it, just a couple of little cold shots.
- 21:08Speaker 3: But then right for that, right after Christmas around it John,
- 21:10Speaker 3: Right for Christmas, that's when we started seeing things ramp up,
- 21:13Speaker 3: and boy it got going in in January.
- 21:15Speaker 4: Yeah, all right, Brian, I appreciate it, man, and we'll
- 21:18Speaker 4: talk again soon. Hopefully not too many times this winter though.
- 21:21Speaker 10: Okay exactly, but when you do call. When you do call,

- 22:47Speaker 4: look who's here. It's our good friend from Charles to
- 22:50Speaker 4: maryor Danny Jones.
- 22:50Speaker 6: How you doing, man, I'm doing all right.
- 22:53Speaker 4: So tomorrow's Veterans Day and I talked tomorrow Boggs from
- 22:56Speaker 4: the American Legion about the activities that they've got going on.
- 22:59Speaker 4: Charles in tomorrow course eleven am as they always do
- 23:01Speaker 4: eighty fourth year. Uh that that that they've been doing
- 23:06Speaker 4: that ceremony. I'll ask you about about your about your service,
- 23:12Speaker 4: uh as much as you want to talk about it,
- 23:17Speaker 4: what's looking back on it? I know that every military person,
- 23:22Speaker 4: whether they serve in war or piece time, they have
- 23:24Speaker 4: good memories, they have bad memories. What your what's your
- 23:26Speaker 4: overall memories of your service time?
- 23:30Speaker 6: Piece of cake? Really well, it was uh parafylin and
- 23:40Speaker 6: emftry training was living hell, and imftry training was worse
- 23:47Speaker 6: than parasylin. And then I went to truck driving school
- 23:52Speaker 6: and that's when the weather got better, and that was okay.
- 23:56Speaker 6: Now I started going home on the weekend and that
- 23:59Speaker 6: came back. And I was stationed at an area called
- 24:03Speaker 6: Camp Geiger, which I've been before because that's where we trained.
- 24:08Speaker 6: It's part of Campbella June. And I was sitting in
- 24:12Speaker 6: my truck one day and a guy comes up, some
- 24:14Speaker 6: corporal said, Private Jones got some orders for you. It
- 24:20Speaker 6: was called Western Pacific westpac. That meant you're going overseas.
- 24:32Speaker 6: In the Marine Corps, they didn't tell you if you
- 24:34Speaker 6: were one to Vietnam, you went to Vietnam. Everybody went
- 24:39Speaker 6: to Okinawa to begin with, and then we went to Vietnam.
- 24:45Speaker 6: And Vietnam was good except for the bad parts. But
- 24:52Speaker 6: that wasn't a majority of the time. Really, the majority
- 24:55Speaker 6: of the time it was work. It was just work.
- 25:00Speaker 6: It just worked all the time. And but there were
- 25:06Speaker 6: some weird times over there. But and then when I
- 25:12Speaker 6: got back from Vietnam, I was stationed on at El Toro,
- 25:16Speaker 6: which is now closed Eltra Marine Corps air Station, and
- 25:24Speaker 6: that was a piece of cake. And I drove a
- 25:27Speaker 6: school bus. I mean, come on, you drove.
- 25:29Speaker 4: A school bus in the military.
- 25:31Speaker 6: I drew, well, it was they called it a school bus.
- 25:34Speaker 6: It was gray. I drove troops around and a bus.
- 25:38Speaker 6: And when you're when you're a driver, it's like being
- 25:41Speaker 6: in a union. You don't have to do anything else
- 25:44Speaker 6: other than other than drive. And I remember taking a
- 25:48Speaker 6: bunch of people, a bunch of troops out to a
- 25:51Speaker 6: one of the beach towns because they were in a
- 25:54Speaker 6: parade and Governor Regan was there, Senator Murphy, Mayor Yordy,
- 26:06Speaker 6: and I just walked. I just looked at looked at
- 26:11Speaker 6: the girls on the floats, and I knew that I
- 26:16Speaker 6: was gonna. I was getting close. I was getting close
- 26:20Speaker 6: to getting out of the service.
- 26:21Speaker 4: Did you ever consider making a career of it or
- 26:24Speaker 4: staying in longer than you did.
- 26:26Speaker 8: Well.
- 26:29Speaker 6: I looked back on it. I thought about that, but
- 26:35Speaker 6: I wouldn't have stated in motor transport. I would have
- 26:39Speaker 6: gone into food service. I would have I worked at
- 26:42Speaker 6: a mess hall on Okinawa, and my last month in
- 26:46Speaker 6: Vietnam I spent and I'm working in the mess hall
- 26:50Speaker 6: because sergeant didn't like me at the motor at the
- 26:54Speaker 6: motor pool and he thought I was a smart alec,
- 26:58Speaker 6: which I probably was. Said that what do you mean
- 27:01Speaker 6: was he said, Jones, you you better watch the way
- 27:06Speaker 6: you talk. I'll put you thirty days of mess duty.
- 27:10Speaker 6: I said, you want to put me on mess diddy,
- 27:13Speaker 6: go for it, and he did. And I mean, put
- 27:17Speaker 6: me on mess didy. That's like send me home.
- 27:20Speaker 4: What how many things did you learn, Danny, when you
- 27:22Speaker 4: were on mess duty that you would transfer later when
- 27:26Speaker 4: you had these restaurants? Nothing? Nothing? Okay? Good?
- 27:28Speaker 6: I worked in the I worked in a scullery, okay,
- 27:31Speaker 6: and that is that is where you washed dishes, okay.
- 27:35Speaker 6: And the only thing we went to work at four
- 27:40Speaker 6: and we got off at two in the afternoon, went
- 27:43Speaker 6: back at four and got off at seven. And there
- 27:50Speaker 6: was a gunnery sergeant there and he was talking real
- 27:55Speaker 6: nasty to some troops. I mean, these are these are
- 28:00Speaker 6: not boots, these are marines, and they wanted to kill him.
- 28:05Speaker 6: Really yeah, I mean there were people had guns over there.
- 28:10Speaker 6: And you know, you hear about instance of fragging. You
- 28:15Speaker 6: ever hear that tragging? Fragging? That's when you take a
- 28:19Speaker 6: grenade and throw it, throw it in a tent of
- 28:22Speaker 6: somebody don't like, and it kills them. Call that fragging.
- 28:26Speaker 6: They wanted to kill this guy. And I talked to
- 28:28Speaker 6: everybody out of it. I'm telling you the truth, though.
- 28:31Speaker 6: I mean, because he.
- 28:31Speaker 4: Was common, is that the military, or at least now where.
- 28:34Speaker 6: It wasn't common where I was maybe out in the
- 28:37Speaker 6: bush it is, but I wasn't out in the bush.
- 28:41Speaker 6: And I volunteered to go to Vietnam. I was on
- 28:46Speaker 6: Okinawa for five months and all I did was drive
- 28:50Speaker 6: and play baseball. Played baseball seven nights a week, and
- 28:54Speaker 6: I drove for the messhole. So I worked, and that
- 28:58Speaker 6: it was boring. So I just into work in the
- 29:00Speaker 6: missile and I drove and we played baseball every night.
- 29:08Speaker 6: And so I put in it what's called an administrative
- 29:10Speaker 6: action for him to go to Vietnam.
- 29:16Speaker 4: And why would you want to go to Vietnam because
- 29:20Speaker 4: most people try to avoid Vietnam.
- 29:21Speaker 6: I thought it might get me out early. It worked
- 29:24Speaker 6: just the opposite. Okay, it kept me in longer, right
- 29:28Speaker 6: because we came back too early. But I had they
- 29:33Speaker 6: sent me, which shocked me. When I put it in,
- 29:36Speaker 6: I was half serious. I didn't think they did, but
- 29:39Speaker 6: they did. They sent me to the first Marine Air
- 29:41Speaker 6: wing in the name.
- 29:44Speaker 4: What was the sense? And I've told the story before
- 29:47Speaker 4: you to My father's a Vietnam veteran, and he passed
- 29:50Speaker 4: in twenty fourteen of complications from agent orange? What was
- 29:53Speaker 4: the sense of the of the folks that were serving
- 29:57Speaker 4: in Vietnam about Because my dad told me, and he
- 30:00Speaker 4: was there, I made a mistake what time, saying well,
- 30:02Speaker 4: you were there before it got bad? He said, it's
- 30:04Speaker 4: a war. It was always bad. But he was out
- 30:07Speaker 4: of there by sixty I want to say by sixty
- 30:10Speaker 4: seven or sixty eight. He was out of it. It
- 30:12Speaker 4: was bad, okay? And uh, but he said, because I asked.
- 30:16Speaker 4: I was fascinated with it when I was a kid,
- 30:18Speaker 4: and he there's certain things he didn't like to talk about.
- 30:20Speaker 4: And I can want to think to ask a question, right, right?
- 30:24Speaker 4: And but I would I knew what I could ask
- 30:27Speaker 4: one I could, but I asked him, I said, what
- 30:28Speaker 4: about getting inform? Did you guys ever feel like that
- 30:32Speaker 4: you were sent to fail? And he told me point blank.
- 30:37Speaker 4: My dad may have had his faults, but one thing
- 30:39Speaker 4: is he was a very religious man, and he was honest.
- 30:42Speaker 4: He said, we knew by that point that the object
- 30:45Speaker 4: wasn't to win, and he never really expounded upon that
- 30:49Speaker 4: because he said there were so many times that he
- 30:52Speaker 4: and he did other things in the military, like my
- 30:55Speaker 4: dad was an office clerk. Okay, that's what he worked
- 30:57Speaker 4: in an office. He was what you call him one right, uh,
- 31:01Speaker 4: And but he said there were so many times that
- 31:04Speaker 4: we could have ended this thing or at least made
- 31:07Speaker 4: great gains, and we were told not to.
- 31:09Speaker 6: Well, I don't know about that.
- 31:11Speaker 4: Yeah, that was his take.
- 31:13Speaker 6: But Richard Nixon, the night before I was drafted, on
- 31:18Speaker 6: November third of sixty nine, he made his Vietnamization speech
- 31:24Speaker 6: about gradually withdrawing troops and replacing them with the Vietnamese.
- 31:32Speaker 6: He did that the night before I left, so we
- 31:35Speaker 6: knew there was no there was no reason to win.
- 31:39Speaker 6: I mean, there was there was not going to be
- 31:41Speaker 6: a winner to this war. But when you were over there,
- 31:48Speaker 6: it was very laid back.
- 31:51Speaker 4: You just worked.
- 31:53Speaker 6: I mean, you just worked. I mean it was it
- 31:55Speaker 6: was almost I mean it was so casual. It's like
- 32:00Speaker 6: almost like a beatnik experience. You know. It was like
- 32:05Speaker 6: we had sayings like when you wanted to don't get
- 32:09Speaker 6: me fired now, no no, no, when you you know
- 32:13Speaker 6: how the mafia where they say forget about it. Yeah,
- 32:16Speaker 6: we said, there it is, well, she's good looking. There
- 32:20Speaker 6: it is, I'm short, I'm getting out in eleven days.
- 32:25Speaker 6: There it is.
- 32:26Speaker 4: That was your affirmation.
- 32:27Speaker 6: Everybody said that to each other.
- 32:29Speaker 4: There it is, well, thank Danny, thank you for your service.
- 32:32Speaker 6: Yeah, okay, Well.
- 32:34Speaker 4: How do you feel when people come up and say that?
- 32:36Speaker 4: Because I had a veteran one time that explained to me,
- 32:39Speaker 4: and you know, it all comes from a good place.
- 32:41Speaker 4: But he had somebody. He would frequently wear an army
- 32:45Speaker 4: veteran hat, and I mean, when you wear a hat,
- 32:47Speaker 4: somebody's going to say something. Okay. He wasn't big on
- 32:51Speaker 4: being thanked for his experience, he said, because he said,
- 32:53Speaker 4: I did what I was told to do, and he
- 32:56Speaker 4: was drafted. He was older, he was drafted. He said,
- 32:58Speaker 4: I mean, there's no reason to thank me. I didn't
- 32:59Speaker 4: have choice. I mean that was one guy's take.
- 33:03Speaker 6: I mean, I'm glad that people are doing it, because
- 33:06Speaker 6: I can assure you they didn't do it back then.
- 33:08Speaker 4: That's what my dad said.
- 33:09Speaker 6: Yeah, they it was. I remember I got back and
- 33:15Speaker 6: went to Marshall, and people just didn't want to talk
- 33:19Speaker 6: about it, not in school. I thought it might help
- 33:22Speaker 6: me get a girl and a job. It didn't help
- 33:24Speaker 6: me do either. People didn't want to talk about it.
- 33:28Speaker 6: I went to work at Wiggins as a dishwasher, right
- 33:32Speaker 6: across from Old Main. There were two Wiggins. There was

- 36:54Speaker 4: Virginia seventh Avenue started around four am. The building was
- 36:56Speaker 4: being used most recently as a warehouse. It was abandoned
- 36:58Speaker 4: more than likely Danny some he's trying to stay warm,
- 37:01Speaker 4: saw that building used to be Fad Furniture, and somebody
- 37:04Speaker 4: commented on that, I don't, I mean, you know Charleston
- 37:07Speaker 4: better than I do in that in that location. I
- 37:09Speaker 4: just remembered I hadn't heard the name Fad Furniture in
- 37:11Speaker 4: a long time.
- 37:12Speaker 6: Give me the address.
- 37:13Speaker 4: I don't have the address in front of me right now.
- 37:15Speaker 6: That's seven.
- 37:17Speaker 4: Yeah, it was at the corner Virginian seventh Avenue. Somebody
- 37:19Speaker 4: had just commented that it was a former fat Well,
- 37:22Speaker 4: we'll get it for you. We had a caller and
- 37:25Speaker 4: they just had a question about the book. So, okay,
- 37:27Speaker 4: when's the book coming out?
- 37:29Speaker 6: The book should be in next Monday.
- 37:32Speaker 10: Okay.
- 37:33Speaker 6: I'll get two hundred books, okay, and I'm gonna take
- 37:39Speaker 6: ten of them down to Taylor Books. He said, he
- 37:43Speaker 6: put him out see if he anybelly wants one, and then.
- 37:47Speaker 4: Got to get you out of that attitude, Danny, that
- 37:49Speaker 4: nobody's gonna want people want this one.
- 37:51Speaker 6: This is what he wants to do because a week
- 37:53Speaker 6: a week from Saturday, on the twenty second, I'll be
- 37:58Speaker 6: I'll be there at a table signing books if people
- 38:02Speaker 6: want to come in and buy one and have me
- 38:03Speaker 6: sign it. But the books will be in a week
- 38:09Speaker 6: from today. They should. I should have a few Taylor
- 38:11Speaker 6: books and if they move, I'll put ten more there.
- 38:15Speaker 4: You know, I'm not going to feel with everything you
- 38:17Speaker 4: put into that project to be able to physically hold
- 38:19Speaker 4: the finished product in your hand, because it's one thing
- 38:22Speaker 4: to see it on paper, but to be able to
- 38:25Speaker 4: physically hold.
- 38:27Speaker 6: Yeah, it's when I tell people about it, don't know
- 38:33Speaker 6: about it. I mean, people say, well, why would then
- 38:36Speaker 6: they write a book about you? Well, it wasn't my choice.
- 38:40Speaker 6: It was Charlie called me, Charlie Ryan. Yeah, and so
- 38:46Speaker 6: we did it together, and we did it pretty quickly.
- 38:49Speaker 6: It was it was hard, it was a lot of work.
- 38:53Speaker 6: And it's not as blue as it could be.
- 39:00Speaker 4: And I'm gonna have to explain to some people what
- 39:02Speaker 4: blue means, you know, off color, off color adult contents. Yeah,
- 39:07Speaker 4: adult as they used to say in the movies. I
- 39:09Speaker 4: don't know whether they're still doing adult language and situations.
- 39:12Speaker 4: It's not it's not gonna not quite as bad as
- 39:14Speaker 4: it could be.
- 39:17Speaker 6: Have I talked about Rita, Yes, okay, yeah, you've talked
- 39:21Speaker 6: about Red Rita. Rita came down. She is my my
- 39:27Speaker 6: My room was changed again and she came down and
- 39:30Speaker 6: all those Shriners were there, and she she had nothing
- 39:33Speaker 6: on her raincoat. Nice, and she took off the raincoat
- 39:39Speaker 6: and walked around in high heel and went back up
- 39:42Speaker 6: to my room. And if you want to find out
- 39:45Speaker 6: the rest of us, we're going to You're gonna have
- 39:48Speaker 6: to read the book because there's a lot more of
- 39:49Speaker 6: that story.
- 39:50Speaker 4: All right, all right, we'll well we'll leave that.
- 39:53Speaker 6: But I'll tell you something. Let me just I think
- 39:55Speaker 6: about readA every day.
- 39:57Speaker 4: Well, I can imagine.
- 39:58Speaker 6: Now we've got to be friends. And I think it's sad.
- 40:03Speaker 6: I think it's sad about reading.
- 40:05Speaker 4: We had a text and set. Is there any pictures
- 40:07Speaker 4: in it?
- 40:07Speaker 6: There's a lot of pictures in it, a lot of color,
- 40:11Speaker 6: and we I spent extra money. That's why it's twenty
- 40:14Speaker 6: nine ninety five because all the pictures that could have
- 40:17Speaker 6: been in color are in color. And and it's it's
- 40:24Speaker 6: it's a hardback with a flat you know what do
- 40:27Speaker 6: you call that a jacket? And it's a it's I
- 40:31Speaker 6: think it's going to be a book people like if
- 40:34Speaker 6: they'll take the time to read it. I'm an offspring
- 40:39Speaker 6: of eight people that were on the Mayflower. And when
- 40:46Speaker 6: you read to that, it might be a little dry.
- 40:49Speaker 6: So chapter three is when things kick in.
- 40:53Speaker 4: Make a note, Chapter three when things really kick in.
- 40:56Speaker 4: I'm looking forward to it. You're gonna bring me a
- 40:58Speaker 4: copy next week because I'm gonna buy.
- 40:59Speaker 6: It I'm going to bring you a copy. Okay, you'll
- 41:02Speaker 6: have a copy, all right. Now, I got to get
- 41:05Speaker 6: this in. People have blamed Mayor Goodwin because there's no
- 41:15Speaker 6: car show.
- 41:17Speaker 4: Uh, the rod running do what? Yeah?
- 41:21Speaker 6: And it's not accurate.
- 41:25Speaker 4: Okay.
- 41:26Speaker 6: What happened was the city had put up thirty thousand dollars.
- 41:32Speaker 6: These guys waited till the very last minute to cancel it.
- 41:38Speaker 6: And I'll tell you why, because I don't think they
- 41:45Speaker 6: want anybody looking at the books, and so Mayor Goodwin
- 41:51Speaker 6: didn't have time to call me or do anything else. Hey,
- 41:57Speaker 6: you want to put a car show together? But it
- 41:59Speaker 6: was there was no time. I mean they did it
- 42:03Speaker 6: like month or two months before it happened. And I
- 42:10Speaker 6: know that they took weekends and took the staff up
- 42:14Speaker 6: to Stunwall Jackson to the to have a gathering. They
- 42:19Speaker 6: took money from the car show.
- 42:21Speaker 4: Okay, it's a pretty serious accusation.
- 42:22Speaker 6: It's a pretty true accusation. Okay, all right, and I'll
- 42:25Speaker 6: stand by it, okay, all right.
- 42:27Speaker 4: Well, and the reason that just to give the listeners
- 42:30Speaker 4: like a little inside baseball here it's been and I've
- 42:33Speaker 4: been doing this show for five years and when the
- 42:34Speaker 4: rod Run and dew Wop went away. You're right, people
- 42:37Speaker 4: blamed the mayor.
- 42:39Speaker 6: It's not a fair it's not a fair accusation.
- 42:41Speaker 4: And uh uh and and so for one reason or
- 42:44Speaker 4: another it went away. But you were saying, as she
- 42:47Speaker 4: has said all along, that this was not her decision.
- 42:50Speaker 6: It wasn't and she would have she would have kept it.
- 42:55Speaker 6: Now it's gone on too long.
- 42:58Speaker 3: Uh.
- 42:58Speaker 6: I talked to Frank last week and at South Charleston.
- 43:04Speaker 6: He wants me to bring you know, my cars down.
- 43:07Speaker 4: There, Mollins. We're talking about Yeah.
- 43:08Speaker 6: Yeah, boy, they're kicking down there, aren't they.
- 43:11Speaker 4: Yeah, South Charleston doing pretty well. But you just wanted
- 43:14Speaker 4: to get that out there because there was a lot.
- 43:16Speaker 4: There was a little off the air conversation last week
- 43:19Speaker 4: and the crossover between you and the mayor.
- 43:21Speaker 6: Yeah, but they I believe they took they took weekends
- 43:25Speaker 6: and took trips. I don't know if they did it
- 43:28Speaker 6: once or more than once. But that's not what the money.
- 43:31Speaker 4: Was there for.
- 43:33Speaker 6: But where are the books? And so maybe maybe this
- 43:39Speaker 6: will scare up the books.

- 47:11Speaker 4: with the text, Danny. It says, well, Dave, the government
- 47:14Speaker 4: right might reopen on the word of Republicans. That's concerning.
- 47:18Speaker 4: Remember when Republicans said they weren't xenophobic and bigoted. The
- 47:21Speaker 4: New York City mayoral election proved that to be false.
- 47:23Speaker 4: Remember when Republicans said they care about children. That was
- 47:26Speaker 4: proven false by their lawsuits against judges' orders to fund
- 47:29Speaker 4: snap Remember when Republicans said they're going after violent illegal
- 47:32Speaker 4: immigrants American citizens getting snatched and decline or detained. Rather
- 47:36Speaker 4: prove that false, I wouldn't hold my breath for Republican
- 47:39Speaker 4: good faith negotiations on the ACA. Republicans are liars. That's
- 47:43Speaker 4: a lot.
- 47:44Speaker 6: Yeah, I don't think I'm gonna I don't think I'm
- 47:46Speaker 6: going to go there.
- 47:47Speaker 4: Okay, we'll talk about your opinion of the show.
- 47:50Speaker 6: I think it took an extraordinary amount of courage for
- 47:53Speaker 6: Tim Kaine and company, so've done that.
- 47:56Speaker 4: Yeah, it was a sixty to forty vote to take
- 47:58Speaker 4: the steps forward toward opening the guy from an eight
- 48:00Speaker 4: Senate Democrats reached a compromise with GOP leaders in exchange
- 48:04Speaker 4: for a future vote on expanding affordable healthcare.
- 48:06Speaker 6: You know, Donna Brazil said something a couple of weeks ago.
- 48:09Speaker 6: She said, she said, what happened to the Gang of eight?
- 48:13Speaker 6: You know, why not put a gang together, you know,
- 48:16Speaker 6: and like you could put Chimkine on it. You could
- 48:19Speaker 6: put some of the people who voted to shut to
- 48:23Speaker 6: open the government. You could put Susan Collins on it
- 48:26Speaker 6: and try to come up with something on this healthcare
- 48:30Speaker 6: that maybe maybe people would agree to, or maybe they
- 48:35Speaker 6: could agree to disagree about and put at least put
- 48:38Speaker 6: a bill together.
- 48:40Speaker 4: But don't we just kicking the can down the road,
- 48:42Speaker 4: because I mean this is I mean, I mean.
- 48:45Speaker 6: Thirty nine perion in debt. Yeah, we're kicking the can
- 48:48Speaker 6: down the road. All right. Let me tell you something
- 48:50Speaker 6: I heard this morning. Okay, I watched on Facebook video
- 48:55Speaker 6: and on YouTube video there are reels and they had
- 49:03Speaker 6: this rabbi on there and he said that he and
- 49:08Speaker 6: a group of rabbis met. They were from New York.
- 49:12Speaker 6: They met with the new mayor. What's Zora and Donnie
- 49:15Speaker 6: or what? Yeah? Mondmi And he said it got very
- 49:20Speaker 6: dark very quickly. He said he didn't take back a thing.
- 49:24Speaker 6: Israel shouldn't exist, Zionism shouldn't be allowed from the river
- 49:31Speaker 6: to the sea. Uh it was, he said, it got
- 49:35Speaker 6: real dark. It said, they were real surprised.
- 49:38Speaker 4: You're the first person that I heard ever talk about him,
- 49:41Speaker 4: And that was several months ago. And I remember you
- 49:43Speaker 4: came and I wasn't paying attention to the mayor election
- 49:45Speaker 4: New York like most people born. And then you came in,
- 49:47Speaker 4: you said, I remember very well. You looked at me
- 49:50Speaker 4: and you said we got to watch this. We had
- 49:52Speaker 4: to watch this because this is good. And what it
- 49:54Speaker 4: all boils down to to me, Danny, it's it's it's
- 49:56Speaker 4: affordability and that. And that's what a lot of people,
- 49:59Speaker 4: oh not all that supported him.
- 50:01Speaker 6: He's not affected.
- 50:02Speaker 4: For No, he's not going to be able to do
- 50:04Speaker 4: I mean, he's not a king. I mean to use
- 50:06Speaker 4: a term. You know, he's not gonna be able to
- 50:08Speaker 4: do this these things. The couple talked about.
- 50:11Speaker 6: One other things, Big Calumn in the New York Times
- 50:13Speaker 6: is today, and he said, the future of the Democrat
- 50:17Speaker 6: Party is not with Mundami, it's with guess who, the
- 50:24Speaker 6: governor of Pennsylvania, your boy. Yeah, And and did a
- 50:28Speaker 6: huge article about him, and they had one hundred and
- 50:31Speaker 6: seventy comments, and this guy was answering all the comments. Right,
- 50:35Speaker 6: it's author. So it was really good. So it was
