- 1:41sixth, nineteen fifty and the title is The Big Book. The story you
- 1:53were about to hear is true, only the names have been changed to protect
- 1:59the inner. A team of cigarettes, best of all, Long Cigarettes brings
- 2:05you Dragnet. You're a detective sergeant. You're a signed the Juvenile Bureau of
- 2:21the high schools in your city have been flooded with obscene literature. If you
- 2:24stamp out one source and a dozen more spring up, your job stop them.
- 2:39Drag Net the documented drama of an actual crime. All the next thirty
- 2:45minutes, in cooperation with the Los Angeles Police Department, you will travel step
- 2:49by step on the side of the law through an actual case, from official
- 2:52police files, from beginning to end, from crime to punishment. Drag Net
- 2:58is the story of your police sports in action. It was Monday, October
- 3:05twenty first, it was cool in Los Angeles. We were working the day
- 3:07watch out of Juvenile Bureau. My partner's Ben Romero. The boss is Inspector
- 3:12Lester, commander of the Juvenile Bureau. My name is Friday. It was
- 3:15ten am when we got to the auditorium of Canfield High School stage door.
- 3:23I guess we go right out onto the day. A better way to work,
- 3:25call though the police. Yes, sir, this is Sergeant Romero.
- 3:30My name is fridy. How do you do. I'm Paul Fisher, the
- 3:32principal here. Come right out onto the station and get the meeting started,
- 3:36all right. I just have a chair there. Thanks is the mic phone
- 3:45on, Ladies and gentlemen of the Coordinating Council, members of the Parent Teachers
- 3:52Association. As you know, this meeting has been called well the purpose of
- 3:57discussing ways in MEAs to bring about the name of the distribution of the filthy
- 4:00And I've seen books and pamphlets that have been visiting every high school campus in
- 4:04the city of Los Angeles. We've tried to agree at our disposal will clean
- 4:09this matter up, and they all seem to fail on the advice of the
- 4:14co Ordinating Council. And this is mandel to the PTA. We've called in
- 4:16the authorities here to discuss the matter with us this morning. Our two officers
- 4:21connected with the Junior Bureau of our Police department, Sergeant through Merrow and Sogeant
- 4:29Pride, and now may I turned the meeting over to Sargeant Pry Los Angeles
- 4:34Police Department. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. The only way we're going
- 4:42to get to the bottom of this thing and put a stop to it is
- 4:45to get all the information we can on where this lasivious material is coming from.
- 4:48You people, as parents and teachers of the children who are buying and
- 4:51reading this stuff, might be able to give us some help. So it's
- 4:56all right, and you, mister Fisher, I'd like to hear from some
- 4:58of the people sitting out there, I mean, thank you do If any
- 5:02of you people have anything to say or any information, any questions, why
- 5:05would be glad to listen to you and do our best to answer your question.
- 5:10Yes, the lady out there is go ahead. I'm in the sign
- 5:15I know in our neighborhood, the test. I feel sure that that's one
- 5:21of the places where the children at the place of this name for the police
- 5:28department, for the man has the place, has never been arrested. Can
- 5:32you tell me what well, ma'am, I think I better make it clear
- 5:36now that there's only one way a police officer can arrest anyone for possession of
- 5:41lude literature. The officer has to prove that the party who possesses this literature
- 5:46does so for the purpose of selling it. Sometimes it's difficult to prove improve
- 5:51it. You mean, you can go to this place and buy a book
- 5:55from him. Yes, ma'am, that's just the point. I don't know
- 6:01offhand about the one in your neighborhood, but I can assure you that we've
- 6:03cracked down on hundreds of such peddlers in the past few months. You can
- 6:08see for yourselves. If this doesn't put a stop to it, you've got
- 6:10to get to the source. I have a press by you, yes,
- 6:13sir, I ain't fresh shot. I'm directed with the sweater Shooter's boys.
- 6:16Yes, sir. Why not trying to make is I know the young boy
- 6:21pretty well with the accession of my boys forty nine in number. I have
- 6:27a lad here. Just about every boy in this high school has one of
- 6:30the books, or at past he's seeing one. Yes, sir, we're
- 6:33aware of that. Why not trying to make is somewhere to do this more
- 6:38code? There's gotta be a law of her band such thing. Yes,
- 6:41sir, there is such a law. Then why isn't it that boss?
- 6:44It is? What does the law say? Well, how do you mean
- 6:47she what I need? What happens when somebody's found ghetto? You're selling these
- 6:51forks white the pality? Oh well, the law states that an offender is
- 6:55liable to find a jail term of six months or both. That's not my
- 7:00why they're a stronger law. I wouldn't know that. Shit. What we
- 7:06need laws and some teth in them. We have good laws in the state
- 7:10of California for the most part. It's true that we're weak in some cases,
- 7:14but you can say that about most states. I think, well,
- 7:15you may be satisfied in the laws, but I am not. I say
- 7:19stronger law, that's the answer. No, I don't think it is,
- 7:23mister Scott. Passing a set of new laws isn't going to make the city
- 7:27a cleaner or a safer place for your boys to grow up in. Laws
- 7:30don't decide how moral a city's going to be. People do. Laws don't
- 7:34mold character in young boys eating parents and teachers do that. I do.
- 7:40You're getting that? What do you mean just this, mister Scott. It's
- 7:43our job on the police department to keep filthy junks like these books from falling
- 7:46into youngster's hands. Now on the other side of the fence, the youngster
- 7:50has to be taught to recognize us obscene material for what it is, filth
- 7:54and garbage, and the youngsters have to be taught that in the home,
- 7:58in the school, and the church. Now they can be made to understand
- 8:01if the kind of dirt and filters these books represent, well, that'd be
- 8:05worth more than any new set of laws. Amount of sallow. How do
- 8:13you reach them through the youngsters? They seem to know the way. The
- 8:20next morning, at eight am, after meeting with Inspector Lester of Juvenile Bureau,
- 8:22Ben and I went on stakehout at Canfield High School. From past experience,
- 8:26we knew there was little hope of a quick end of the case.
- 8:28It was going to be a long haul, chasing the source all the way
- 8:33up the line, from the high school kids who bought the filthy books,
- 8:35to the small fry pushers, the wholesalers, and finally we hoped to the
- 8:39top, the man who printed the books. We had no illusions on that
- 8:43score. Generally, with the arrest of his pushers and other small timers who
- 8:46worked for him, the top man gets the alarm and clears out before the
- 8:50police officer can apprehend him with evidence that they'll stand up in court. During
- 8:54the first two days at Canfield High Ben and I found out nothing. The
- 8:58obscene literature was being bartered and change between students, but the main source of
- 9:01supply was still a mystery. We had one slim lead to go on.
- 9:05Mister Fisher's high school principal helped run it down. We've been watching that boy
- 9:09down in the yard since yesterday. Mestition seems to have quite a bit of
- 9:13spending money, spensive cloth carvers on. I don't know that boy's family.
- 9:18That could be well fire. We saw him with a stack of those dirty
- 9:20books in his notebook. He must have had a dozen of them, were
- 9:22showing him around to his tribe, Travers. Are you sure take a look
- 9:26down there? Yeah, Travers is showing him something. I can't see what
- 9:31it is. Come over this side and one. Yeah, small books.
- 9:37He's giving them to one of the other those they've got their wallets out.
- 9:39They're giving Travers money. Come on, Ben, you better come to mister
- 9:41Fisher. This way out to the yarch, No, to the leg that's
- 9:46it. Let's hurry, huh this store side of the Travers, Travers,
- 9:56I like to talk to you. Yeah. Well, these men here from
- 10:01the police department. They want to ask you some question. Years, so
- 10:03we go outside here. Come on, what's the matter of miss Fisher.
- 10:09I haven't done anything. You see, what is it? What's it all
- 10:15about? It'll be a lot easier if we have the truth. So did
- 10:20you just sell those boys out there? Some dirty books? No? Well,
- 10:24I mean it's only a gag. They're funny books. Have you dot
- 10:26any more of them? Morning? Yes, sir? Let me see them?
- 10:30Please? I didn't steal them, only books, funny books. Yeah,
- 10:35thanks, almost, it doesn't. Do you think these are funny books?
- 10:41Do you travel well some of them? I guess not. It's only
- 10:46a gags, aren't you what'd you get them? I didn't steal them.
- 10:50I bought them off a guy who I can't tell you. Do you have
- 10:54any more of these books? No, sir? Will you show us your
- 10:56locker? I can't remember the combination lock. Could you open the locker force?
- 11:01Yes, but I'll have to get the maintenance man. Oh, i'll
- 11:05show you. Come on John, here, sir, this one four twelve.
- 11:16I've only got a couple, all right, we'll see mine open.
- 11:24I haven't done anything. Here's a sample of girl lockers, loaded down and
- 11:31lock them. You can't arrest me. I don't sell the books, only
- 11:35read them. Somebody's been briefing you who I'm only making good hot on yourself.
- 11:39Boy, you can't prove anything. These are my books. I don't
- 11:41sell them. What do you get them? Who sell them to nobody?
- 11:46I got them? That's all all right. We'll have to talk to your
- 11:48folks. You can't their way, No, no, you can't, don't,
- 11:54will have to son. Oh please please don't tell them. Please don't
- 11:56let them know. I'll do anything. Let's have the truth. Then what
- 12:00are you selling the books for? Name's Barney, That's all I know.
- 12:03I meet him a cigar store downtown Fifth and Harrison. Does he sell you
- 12:07the books? He gives them to me. I sell them and give him
- 12:09the money I get ten cents for when I sell un much. You're sell
- 12:13them for twenty five cents somewhere? Don't I get thirty cents for those?
- 12:18The boys in this school have been paying that kind of money for this deal.
- 12:22Yes, sir, this man who gives you these books, you know
- 12:26where he lives, knows where I have any ideas? When are you going
- 12:28to see him? Well, this is Wednesday. I was going to meet
- 12:33him Downtown's half noon the cigar store. Yes, sir, but I don't
- 12:35want to get to buy in trouble. He's been okay to me. Sure
- 12:39he's done a lot for you. Four pm Wednesday, Then and I drove
- 12:46downtown with sixteen year old Eddie Travers. They parked the car near the corner
- 12:50of Fifth and Harrison and kept an eye on the cigar store. We waited.
- 12:56No sign yet, No, sir Barney. Usually he waits for the
- 13:00news stand there. I haven't seen him yet. How long you've been selling
- 13:03for this man? Sin? About three months? Maybe four? Any idea
- 13:07where he gets the books? Well? I just a minute, sorry,
- 13:11Yeah, I think, Yeah, that's Bunnie, the one going up to
- 13:15the cigar counter man in the gray suit. And yeah, that's him.
- 13:18He's going into one eat his cafe. Is that where you usually go after
- 13:20you meet him? Yes, sir, you better take the boy back to
- 13:22the office. Ben, I'll tail this guy and see I can find out.
- 13:26Okay, I'm gonna pick you up later. I'll call you at the

- 17:30left and went down one block. It was five minutes to five when we
- 17:33got to Barney's room in the Denver House, number three thirty seven. He
- 17:37dragged got a steamer trunk from under the bed. He found it out a
- 17:40stack of books and pamphlets covering the general topic of degenerate built and stories and

- 18:22Not ten years you want? We got lots of time. Come on,
- 18:34you are listening to drag Net The case history of a police investigation.
- 18:45The filthy literature racket feeds on the curiosity of youngsters and the stupidity and ignorance
- 18:51of adults. It's an all seasoned business, and in its own quiet way,
- 18:55it has reached the market which the other heavy rackets never hoped to reach.
- 18:57Your home and you're chill the six pm? When's the October twenty third?
- 19:03We checked the record and the makesheet showed the book peddler's true name to
- 19:07be Barney W. Timpson, thirty eight years old. He had a past
- 19:10record of one previous conviction for peddling lude literature in Dodge City, Iowa in
- 19:14March nineteen forty eight. We had him brought the interrogation room. They're not
- 19:21on temple. Let's make it against Barney. Where are you getting the books?
- 19:26I told you so to deliver them for it? Who? Different guys?
- 19:29I don't remember them all. I send different guys every time. How
- 19:32often do they make the deliveries to you? Why? Someone? When rob
- 19:33the first yearsually? Sometimes maybe in the second they bring the books to your
- 19:37hotel. Yeah, I'll leave a pack up in the lobby addressed to me.
- 19:40They ever use the mails? They never do. They're not that dumb.
- 19:42So you've never seen the men that you do business with? That so
- 19:45I no, no, you have no idea where they're operating. I don't
- 19:48know. You expect to swallow that. I'm telling you, I don't know.
- 19:51Don't push. It's that kind of a story, Barney. I'm giving
- 19:52it to you straight now. What else do you want? Who's the supply
- 19:55man? Look? We found this notebook in your hotel room, Varney.
- 19:59Is a list names in it. It's your customer book phrase. Okay,
- 20:04I'll give us enough to land on it. I know that a coajivety.
- 20:07And you still don't know who you work to. But there's a phone number
- 20:11in this notebook. No name to go with it. Yeah, we look
- 20:14at it. This one right here. I don't know much. A customer
- 20:18has it blown with the boss. I don't know the boss. You don't
- 20:19know me. And who do you buy the books from? Who says I
- 20:22buy? I'll let go somebody a lot of money. Don't worry. I
- 20:23don't know him nothing. He don't know me nothing. He does now what
- 20:26you're going to jail for him? Barney Timpson was booked in the Central Jail
- 20:34for violation of the penal code section three eleven point three. We contacted the
- 20:38telephone company and they traced the extra phone number in Timpson's notebook to a private
- 20:42residence on Wonderview Drive in Laurel Canyon. The detail of men was assigned to
- 20:47stake out on the place during the next week, mainly from information obtained from
- 20:51Barney Timpson's customers. Seven other peddlers of the scene books and pamphlets were taken
- 20:56into custody in question. Five of the seven told us they picked up their
- 20:59supply of books from the Lawyel Canyon address. We moved in on the place
- 21:02and found thousands of loot books and pamphlets stored in the garage. Three men
- 21:06on the premises were taken into custody. They identified themselves as John Alexander,
- 21:10George Kellerher and Raymond Kester. They brought them downtown and interrogated them for two
- 21:14hours. They refused to admit anything. They were booked in, but by
- 21:17noon their lawyers arrived and they were released on rits of Habeas Corpus. Two
- 21:22PM, Ben and I met with Inspector Lester of Juvenile Bureau. The kind
- 21:26of call from the minute of stake out of the lawd Canyon place. Just
- 21:29been over the garage with the books of store. They're get any things to
- 21:30give them. A couple of things might be fairly. What's in three stacks
- 21:33of books? They found a rapped and proof letter heads in the Havenbrook Hotel.
- 21:37Yeah, we checked with the hotel. They get all their printing down
- 21:40at Rudolph Brothers place out in West la Name's not familiar to me. It's
- 21:44a big layout, especially as religious books, Bible things like that. That
- 21:48isn't man, that's for sure. How do you mean be a perfect cover
- 21:51for the racket printing the Bible one day and a flock of filthy books the
- 21:53next will be the setate? What kind of a name does this Rudolph's place
- 21:57have around town? They've been here long fifty good reputation. Oh, if
- 22:00you give it a look. Where is the place West third, just below
- 22:03Athne Street. All right, check the place over, but don't make them
- 22:06suspicious. Is anything wrong or you just tipping into a ready to move?
- 22:08All right? Give they've got to reach the presses, turning out this jug
- 22:11and choke off a supply where it starts, so that one gotta beat in
- 22:15just a minute, Yeah nowhere, okayn't do right out? They spoted one
- 22:22of the delivery cars where downtown They followed out to West la you know,
- 22:26Rudolph's sprinting shop. Four PM, Ben and I, together with two other
- 22:33men from Juvenile Bureau, drove out Beverly Boulevard to Athene Street and down one
- 22:37block to the corner of West Third, where we picked up grocery Pacelli on
- 22:41Steak County. The Rudolph Brothers Printing Company covered almost half a square block on
- 22:45the corner of West Third and Athens. The front of the plant had display
- 22:48windows featuring expensive leather bound Bibles and other religious literature. While the other men
- 22:53remained on Steakout, Ben and I crossed the street and entered the plant.
- 22:56We introduced ourselves to the clerk in charge as potential a hole sale customers,
- 23:00and we have to be shown around the shop. It was more than obliging.

- 23:51stone. You see the pages of a new prayer book. We're getting together
- 23:53very over an entirely different kind of hype face. Yes, And back there
- 23:59along the wall our new line of types, the very latest monotypes. Then
- 24:03the proof presses next to them are a proof readers and the flatbed presslow press.
- 24:10Beyond that, it seems like lots of activity. Business is pretty good,
- 24:12I guess. Huh. Oh, yes, we got pretty busy.
- 24:15Quality printing is always in the man. Yeah, well, thanks very much
- 24:18for showing us around. Not at all, gentlemen anytime. Yeah, this
- 24:22way out, all right, I'll get to one of my cards here you

- 24:32well I just give me a call. I'd be glad to take care of
- 24:33you. All right, to think we'll do that. Good afternoon, gentlemen.
- 24:37All right, what do you think you got me? That's not a
- 24:44play whatever system they're using, you got a down path, Bible, bribe
- 24:48book, church announcement. That's all I saw, Ben work. That man
- 24:52getting out of that cargoing into Rudolphin Alexander. Yeah, we picked up this
- 24:55morning on look now tenured six pm. The lights in the display windows when
- 25:03the shades were drawn. We watched the employees leave. Six thirty pm.
- 25:07The lights in the plant were still burning. Gross went down to the corner
- 25:11and picked up some hot dogs and the coffee for our dinner. We ate
- 25:15in the car. Seven thirty pm, a black catlike invertible pulled up across
- 25:18the street. Two men got out and let themselves in through the front door.
- 25:22We waited between seven thirty and eight pm. We cut of twenty one
- 25:26men entering the planet that's printing press and starting up. Okay, let's move,
- 25:33Oh yeah, Gross, but Shelley want to go through the back and
- 25:36then and I will take the front. All right, that's going well,
- 25:38the neat set up. I had it all figured. Yeah. He didn't
- 25:41spot any site entrances, did you? Oh here, we aren't try the
- 25:45door. Yeah it smell gun all right, or the police officers open up.
- 25:57I come on, open up. Let's hit it quick. Come on
- 26:03again, bare they are, Joe, kind of smash the plates. Come
- 26:10on, what getty? We can't play both plates? What's it? Then?
- 26:17All right? Come on you all right, hold it against the way
- 26:19clothes. Get those plates off the press with it all right? Hold it
- 26:23you too, Joe. Look on, all right, that's the place my
- 26:30round up. Past minute, the doors covered, get the most tables.
- 26:33Come on over for the wall. That's about both of them. Don't come
- 26:37in going out the dark. Come on, hit them off with you.
- 26:40Come on you come on back andy, Wait, get the hands off or
- 26:42hold it up, mister, come on over there with the rest. Hey
- 26:47for this, I'll sue you done your last man. Come on, Joe,
- 26:49we've got brudo going out the back right, call the officehere are we
- 26:52gonna need a chance to take okay, take those two with you, huh?
- 26:56All right, come on, we get enough evidence against them. Now
- 27:03we're going to meet it. All changes of the junk right here, yeah,
- 27:12well right next to him. Yeah, stage from the Bible. The
- 27:25story you have just heard was true. Only the names were changed to protect
- 27:30the innocent. On January ninth, trial was held in Superior Court Department ninety
- 27:34four, City and County of Los Angeles, State of California. In a
- 27:37moment the results of that trial, Frank Rudolph and sixteen of his accomplices were
- 27:48tried and convicted of possessing lewd and lascivious literature for the purpose of sale.
- 27:52They received sentences as prescribed by law and are now serving their terms in the
- 27:56county jail. Remember this Saturday, because that means Dimension Act on NBC Welcome
- 28:17Back. Well, this is one of those cases of the more things change,
- 28:22the more things remain the same on one level. On another, there's
- 28:26been a great deal of societal change. Parents in the twenty first century are
- 28:30just as concerned about really inappropriate adult content falling into the hands of kids.
- 28:40Difference, of course, is that so much of this is accelerated, and
- 28:44we're law enforcements concerned. It's with exploitation of children and attempts to use the
- 28:52Internet in certain nefarious ways. So the methods have changed, but the problem
- 28:59remains much the same. We also saw Joe Friday responding for the call for
- 29:04tougher laws pointing out that it's the community, the school, the home,
- 29:11and the houses of worship that have got the primary responsibility for providing moral guidance,
- 29:22which mitigates against some of this sort of thing. But also, of
- 29:26course there's the effect of culture on laws. So this is all pretty fascinating
- 29:33just because we're dealing and addressing and coming to terms with so many of the
- 29:37same issues, just with a lot of high technology in a place of printing
- 29:44technology. I also have to say once again we saw a brilliantly done sound
- 29:52recreation and this stuff is the way that he insisted on accuracy. It's just
- 30:00you know, compared to other radio dramas, even some modern ones won't go
- 30:03to this much trouble. But the way that they made it sound like you
- 30:10were really in an auditorium if you've ever been in one of those public meetings,
- 30:15uh, that really the episode captured the feel and of course Harry Morgan's
- 30:22character with a twitch, uh you know that little verbal twitch using that same
- 30:29phrase. Really it does. It felt so real like you were actually in
- 30:34the meeting hall where this was going on and where someone was speaking into you
- 30:41know, one of those meet uh. Those sound systems that you know that
- 30:45a school will have had around for a decade or so. Really good sound
- 30:53and just great sound detail continues to be a big theme of the show.
- 30:57All right, Well, onto some listener comments and feedback, and we just
- 31:03have this from Edward who says, keep up the good workout there in beautiful
- 31:07bucolic blue sky, blue football field, Boise. Easy for him to say,
- 31:15thanks so much, Edward. I do appreciate your comment and the support,
- 31:18and that will actually do it for today. We will be back tomorrow
