- 0:00As part of Ferrari Fridays, William Ross from the Exotic Car Marketplace
- 0:04will be discussing all things Ferrari and interviewing people that live
- 0:07and breathe the Ferrari brand.
- 0:09Topics range from road cars to racing, drivers to owners, as well
- 0:13as auctions, private sales, and trends in the collector market.
- 0:17Hello everyone, welcome back to the Ferrari Marketplace.
- 0:34As you can see, I'm trying to get a little more regular about this
- 0:37and schedule Tuesdays for, uh, drop the new, uh, episodes here.
- 0:40So, I'm getting a little more diligent about things.
- 0:43I know I kept saying that in the past, but hey, you know what?
- 0:46Try and get what I ain't done, get done, right?
- 0:48You know, so lots of things going on.
- 0:49So, but, trying to get a little more structured here and
- 0:52everything like that so I can get some more of these things out.
- 0:55And, uh, kind of get some more stories out there, some more histories, some more
- 0:59backgrounds, some more of my opinions.
- 1:00Hey.
- 1:01And if you guys ever want to shoot some of yours out there, just let me know.
- 1:03You know how to get ahold of me, William at the FerrariMarketplace.
- 1:06com.
- 1:07So today's episode, what we're going to talk about is probably
- 1:13the sexiest car ever made.
- 1:17In my opinion.
- 1:18It's up there in the top five, at least if it's not one or two.
- 1:22And it's definitely probably the sexiest Ferrari ever built.
- 1:26In my opinion, I could be wrong.
- 1:28Other people have that.
- 1:29You know, hey, it's everyone's own choice.
- 1:31But in my mind, I think it is.
- 1:33And as you can tell from the title, we are talking about the Ferrari 330 P3,
- 1:40that sexy, beautiful car from back in the late 60s, uh, mid late 60s that,
- 1:47uh, they built up to start tackling to go against the GT 40s, uh, that were
- 1:53coming and started wanting to dominate.
- 1:56So yeah, Lamar.
- 1:59So As everyone knows the story of Ford versus Ferrari, everything like that,
- 2:05you know, um, you know, Ford, you know, old, uh, the deuce wanted to buy Ferrari
- 2:12because Ferrari was up for sale, he was in money troubles and have, you know,
- 2:14he was trying to, you know, sort himself out, but, you know, and so what he, he
- 2:17really didn't care about the road car division, obviously, as everyone knows,
- 2:20he was more, hey, about his racing car.
- 2:22That's what his love and his passion was.
- 2:24He built road cars just to fund his racing.
- 2:26But anyways, guys.
- 2:27So after that deal collapsed ever so historically and very, very well known
- 2:32now and how everything went down it, I'm sure there are tidbits of that
- 2:37story that we will never know because everyone involved had or deceased.
- 2:43So, but I mean, talk about wanting to be a fly on the wall in those meetings
- 2:47and everything that went on, you know, that would have been just unbelievable
- 2:50to know the actual true story of how things really kind of went down in the
- 2:54offices or discussions and what have you.
- 2:57You know, it's all coming from third, fourth, fifth priority, what have you.
- 3:00So, and it's, I'm sure it's got diluted and watered down and you know, the old
- 3:04telephone storyline thing is by the time it gets to everyone, it's been,
- 3:07you know, got 10 different versions of the story, but anyways, as we
- 3:12know, you know, Ford brought, started bringing, you know, the GT forties and,
- 3:15uh, to start racing in the FIA world championship, sports car championship.
- 3:20And, you know, they weren't doing too hot right after getting that
- 3:23big problems, everything like that.
- 3:24And as everyone knows, cause Ford, you know, tried to do it and that's when
- 3:26they turned everything over to Carroll.
- 3:28So, but, so anyways, in 1966 is when some real big changes happened in
- 3:35the World Sports Car Championship.
- 3:37Now, since 1962, it's been pretty much decided by production of
- 3:40Brace Grand Touring Cars, i.
- 3:42e.
- 3:42like the 250 GTO and what not.
- 3:44So, but, they also, starting in 1966, is they actually implemented You know,
- 3:52that they can't, you know, purpose built machinery could contest a limited
- 3:55number of the world championship events.
- 3:58Uh, and those points would go toward a separate championship
- 4:01for the prototype machinery.
- 4:03Now, that all changed in 66 though, when the FIA new appendix
- 4:08J regulations were ushered in.
- 4:10Now, the main event for everything and the manufacturer championship
- 4:13decided by group 6 prototypes split into over and under 2 liter classes.
- 4:19Group 6 had no minimum production requirements and the championship
- 4:22would be contested over 7 races, 8 in the case of the under 2 liter cars.
- 4:27Now running simultaneously at most events and with some stand alone events for the
- 4:32smaller engine cars was the International Sports Car Championship for Group 4 cars.
- 4:37Now to qualify for Group 4 a manufacturer had to build 50 examples of the vehicle.
- 4:41We wanted a race.
- 4:42The 3 Group 4 classes were for under 1300cc machinery.
- 4:47Those with engines between 1301 and 2000 and then those who's
- 4:50placing over 2000, 2000 cc's, right?
- 4:55Now, the Group 3 Grand Touring cars were still permitted to run at most
- 5:00events, but were no longer eligible for the championship points significantly.
- 5:04Minimum production requirement had been hiked from 100 to 500 vehicles.
- 5:08Now, the premier over 2 liter class of the 1966 Manufacture Championship
- 5:13for the Group 6 prototypes, here, comprises of these races.
- 5:1724 Hours of Daytona, the Sebring 12 Hours, The Monza 1, 000 kilometers, the
- 5:22Targa Florio, Austin Race, the Spa 1, 000 kilometers, the Nurburgring 1, 000
- 5:27kilometers, and the Le Mans 24 hours.
- 5:30However, only the best four results would actually count
- 5:33towards their final points tally.
- 5:35Which is pretty good, I mean, so you can knock out, you know,
- 5:38a couple of your worst events.
- 5:39Which could come in handy, except if, you know, you were doing good in all of them.
- 5:43So, but that, that's kind of an interesting approach to it.
- 5:46And, you know, just, hey, out of your, out of those, it was just
- 5:49your best four points that actually went towards the championship.
- 5:53Now, to tackle this growing, uh, threat from Ford in their GT40s,
- 5:58you know, obviously they were tweaking, refining those cars.
- 6:01Ferrari created the new 330 P3.
- 6:06That gorgeous car, a piece of machinery.
- 6:09Now, The three, the P three was reserved strictly for use by the works teams
- 6:13while Ferrari satellite squads, you know, probably by their distributorships, I,
- 6:17you know, like n and stuff like that, they would be supplied with p twos that been,
- 6:21had brought up, been brought up to a P two slash three specification, which ran less
- 6:25complex single overhead cam shaft engines.
- 6:28So just a little simpler motors in the cars.
- 6:31And you know, they, they did all right, but hey, you know, hey Ferrari's, the
- 6:35work squads didn't wanna have, you know, something going against them.
- 6:40So anyways, so they also came out with a, uh, uh, an under two, uh, under
- 6:46two liter coup four challenge for 1966 the Dino 206 S which had very similar
- 6:54look and feel to it as the 330 P3s but you know obviously smaller engines,
- 7:00what have you, a bit smaller size.
- 7:02Now both the P3 and the Dino's were unveiled at the press, at the Marinello's
- 7:07press conference in 19, February 1966.
- 7:11Now, unfortunately those labor strikes were paralyzed either at the
- 7:13time, which led to Friar to attend.
- 7:15The first five races of 66 was just a a single P three entry while the
- 7:21ambitious 50 car ho allegation target for the Dino 2 0 6 never came close to
- 7:26being achieved because of all the labor strike and everything in Italy as people,
- 7:30you know, you're a history person, B, whatever, and that wasn't just the car
- 7:34industry, but just labor in general.
- 7:36You know, they were paid absolutely crap.
- 7:38They were probably working 12, 14 hour days, six.
- 7:42Possibly seven days a week.
- 7:43I mean, they just took advantage of these people beyond belief and these
- 7:46people needed to, you know, Hey, they got to pay their bills, keep
- 7:49a roof over their head, feed their families and everything like that.
- 7:52So now the new P3 was based around a new, uh, T boat 603 tubular steel
- 7:58space frame chassis, you know, it's reinforced with aluminum monocoque effect.
- 8:05Now it had about a 2400mm wheelbase that was carried over from the P2.
- 8:08You know, the engine and the gearbox were now, you know,
- 8:12integral part of the structure.
- 8:13Stressed member of the structure.
- 8:15Now along with the bonded fiberglass underside that extended into the rocker
- 8:19panels, as a consequence of all this, the torsional rigidity was much improved.
- 8:24So, you had a much, much better handling car.
- 8:27Much stronger, more rigid, as everyone knows.
- 8:30The more stiffer the car is, the better you can make that thing go.
- 8:33So the suspension was pretty similar to the P two.
- 8:36You know, unequal leak, uh, equal length, wishbone coil springs, touchable
- 8:40stocks, anti-roll bars, you know, the standard stuff, you know, and
- 8:42they had vented disc brakes that were spied by Gurley, uh, mounted inboard
- 8:48of the rear differential at the rear.
- 8:49So, you know, kind of standard stuff going.
- 8:52They had the 15 inch interlock, uh, wheels.
- 8:54And then you run on, uh, Firestones though instead of the dunlops, which
- 8:58was kind of an interesting switch.
- 9:00And they had a 57 liter fuel tank.
- 9:02It was housed in each sill that so.
- 9:05Two gas tanks, capacity, almost basically around 114 liters.
- 9:10That's how that math works.
- 9:12So the engine, let's get to that.
- 9:14Now the engine, the heart of this beast.
- 9:17You know, it's a dry sump, 4 liter, direct overhead camshaft, 63 V12.
- 9:21You know, Colombo design and lineage.
- 9:23Now unlike the P2, Which had used both 3.
- 9:253 and 3 point, uh, 275 and, uh, 330 engines.
- 9:30The P3 only ever ran with a 4 liter power unit.
- 9:33Now the P3's, uh, motor was the first engine from Miller Ellis to feature,
- 9:36uh, feature Lucas fuel injection.
- 9:39As opposed to the Webber's that they had been using in the past.
- 9:42So that kind of was a big jump, I guess you'd say, technology going from, you
- 9:45know, fuel injection from carburetors.
- 9:47So it also came with twin spark ignition.
- 9:49You know, some lightweight cylinder heads and higher compression ratio.
- 9:52Not a lot, but a little bit.
- 9:54You know, displacement was all the way up to 3, 967 cc's thanks to
- 9:58an unchanged bore and stroke was basically the same as 77 by 71.
- 10:03Now peak output put this baby at 420 horsepower.
- 10:07Now imagine that, that car was light.
- 10:09You know, there wasn't much there.
- 10:10So, 420 horsepower, I mean it doesn't sound like a lot, but
- 10:13remember you had a car that weighed probably under 2, 000 pounds easily.
- 10:18Um, you know, there wasn't much there.
- 10:21So it's just a 5 speed tranny, you know, uh, bore quarter.
- 10:25Uh, I'm sorry, not a BorgWarner.
- 10:27My bad.
- 10:28Uh, but just a standard 5 speed, uh, Tipo 593 gearbox.
- 10:33I don't know why I said BorgWarner.
- 10:35I don't mean as soon as I immediately see a trans, talk about transmissions,
- 10:38that means you've jumped to a BorgWarner from back in the day.
- 10:40So, that's just me.
- 10:41My apologies.
- 10:42Hey, what can you do?
- 10:44Now the bodywork was actually an evolution from the P, uh, the P2 from 65.
- 10:49You know, they had, uh, you know, the front car has a
- 10:51nice wide, wide oval intake.
- 10:52They're here, you know, uh, housed.
- 10:54Some brake ducts, you know, to keep those brakes nice and cool and, you know,
- 10:58stacked headlights under some plexiglass covers, you know, dome windscreen, you
- 11:02know, gave a great view out the front.
- 11:04You could, you know, have great vision, what's going on around
- 11:06you, especially in front of you.
- 11:08And, there was also a roofless Spyder variant, um, that was
- 11:13created, uh, for that also.
- 11:15So, they had a couple different versions.
- 11:17You had the hard, you know, Spyder, Berlinetta, everything.
- 11:21So, anyways.
- 11:23You got some cooling slots, everything cut in, you know, um, by the sills from
- 11:28the doors behind the rear wheels where, you know, the tail was, you know, not
- 11:33anything crazy, you know, back then they really weren't getting in all those
- 11:35wings and all that kind of stuff, so, but, all these, uh, body panels were
- 11:39fabricated from some real thin gauge aluminum, you know, obviously to keep
- 11:42that lightweight down and if you ever had to show or something, don't ever even
- 11:46like put your hand on it because they'll just basically, it'll dent those cars.
- 11:50So, you know, And per regulations, you had to have the two seats, so you
- 11:55had two tiny seats stuck in there.
- 11:57Um, so to keep everyone in, and I don't know, I mean obviously you can
- 12:01go for a ride in the passenger seat, but obviously it wasn't meant to have
- 12:04someone in there while they were racing.
- 12:06And every P3, which is interesting, was all built in right hand drive
- 12:10with a right hand gear change.
- 12:12So, they had it on the right hand drive, but, which I always thought
- 12:15was interesting, because you know, you see these cars that, you know,
- 12:18England, everywhere they got, you know, a right hand drive car.
- 12:21You know, your gear selector is always in the center, but if you look at
- 12:24all those cars back in the day that were right hand drive, you look at
- 12:28the Porsches, you know, they were the same weight, 917 and all that stuff.
- 12:31They had the gear selectors on the right, so the gear was going down the
- 12:35sill, so it was kind of interesting.
- 12:37You know, and weight, 850 kilograms.
- 12:42So, do your adjusted math, yeah, it's under 2, 000 pounds.
- 12:46I think my math is correct on that.
- 12:47Again, if I'm wrong, I apologize.
- 12:50Metric system and kilograms and all that stuff.
- 12:52You know, I'm American, what do I know?
- 12:54So doing those things over like that.
- 12:56So the beautiful thing that had the top speed, not quite 200 miles an hour,
- 13:00they could probably top out about 1 92 to 1 93 depending on, you know, that
- 13:05day temperature and what have you.
- 13:06And you know, obviously again, you know by the day, but you could still
- 13:10get under, you know, in under four seconds, up to 60 miles an hour.
- 13:14So production on these Ferra one built three examples of the P 3 4 66.
- 13:21So we had Chassis 0844 that was a Berlinetta that contested
- 13:26at Monza, Spa, and Le Mans.
- 13:28You had Chassis 0846 that was a Spyder that contested four races.
- 13:32That was Sebring, the Targa Florio, the Neuberger Ring, and Le Mans.
- 13:35And another Berlinetta of 0848 was another, but it only contested at Le Mans.
- 13:41So for 66, they had a great set of, you know, employed some awesome drivers.
- 13:48Everyone's going to know these names in 66.
- 13:50You know, Mike Parks, John Surtees.
- 13:51Ludovico Scarfiati, Nino Vaccarella, Lorenzo Bandini, Jean Guillet, Pedro
- 13:58Rodriguez, Bob Bondurant, Mario Cassoni, you know, and they would, uh, go
- 14:04out there and challenge the Ford and Chaparral's team and take it to them.
- 14:07Now Ford only announced in 1966 the championship in their MK2 GT40, and those
- 14:14were just the 24 hours of Daytona, the 12 hour of Sebring, 24 hours of Le Mans.
- 14:18Now, by contrast, Ferrari was going to attend every race
- 14:21by the season over Daytona.
- 14:23Just because I, I, there was something there, but now I don't
- 14:26think the car is ready to get it over there so they didn't bother.
- 14:29But that was that infamous one where, you know, Ford took 3, uh, and 5th.
- 14:34Uh, but the best place Ferrari would have been Nart's 365 P2, which took 4th in
- 14:40the hands of, uh, Rodriguez and Andretti.
- 14:42Now, P3 made its competitive debut at the Sebring at 12 hours on the 23rd of March.
- 14:48Parks and Bondurant started from 2nd on chassis 0846.
- 14:53Behind the, uh, Works Ferrar, uh, Ford GT40s of Gurney and Grant.
- 14:58So, there's five other ones in there.
- 15:00And a couple other, uh, Chaparral's that were in that top ten or that
- 15:03qualifying that race that year.
- 15:06Now having, having led for much of the first hour, uh, the
- 15:09P3 was subsequently occupied,
- 15:16uh, the second and third position turning on stops for fuel and driver change.
- 15:19It was line second when Bond Rock came stranded out on circuit to seize Gearsbox
- 15:24at about three quarters of the distance.
- 15:26Again.
- 15:27Ford's finished first, second, and third.
- 15:29So, Faulty Gearbox took him out.
- 15:32Now, Ferrari chose not to attend the Le Mans test in April for that year.
- 15:37They were just happy to conduct their testing at Monza
- 15:40for the 1, 000 kilometers.
- 15:41But, um, more likely that was kind of dictated by the labor
- 15:44disputes that were still going on.
- 15:47So, John Surtees returned to the team back at, uh, for the next Monza race.
- 15:53Now it was his first race back since his near fatal accident, the Canadian GP
- 15:56uh, Canam race that previous September.
- 15:59Now, in the absence of any worked forward the Chaparral CES and parts to
- 16:02commanding wind in Italy and driving a P three Berlinetta chassis oh 8 4 4.
- 16:07Imagine that in Italy within, in that car, I think the crowd
- 16:10must have been going nuts.
- 16:12Now, the team entered their, uh, the, the P three spider chassis oh 8 4 6 for the
- 16:18target floor that was held on May 8th.
- 16:21Now Baccarella and Bandini were supported by, you know, a bunch of Dinos.
- 16:25Now Ford and Chaparral were, you know, again absent, which the biggest
- 16:29threat to Ferrari came from the five car Porsche Works team with
- 16:32their, uh, team of the Group 6 906s.
- 16:35Now the event saw the P3 battle out with the experimental eight cylinder 906 of
- 16:40Gunther and Gunther Klass, Colin Davis.
- 16:44You know, until Bandini hit a curve about two thirds of the distance and
- 16:47crashed the P3 while in second position.
- 16:49Unfortunately, you know, the more fancy pair of the Porsche also fell to the
- 16:52wayside after making contact with one another, which resulted in a victory.
- 16:56906 of Willem Maurice and Herbert Mueller, Medino of Guggenheim Baguetti
- 17:01finished second and won in its class.
- 17:03Now, hey, if I'm hacking up these names, I apologize.
- 17:05I'm not Italian.
- 17:06I am not.
- 17:08Now, at Spa, they went on to do a basically a flag to flag
- 17:14victory with the chassis 0844.
- 17:17And two weeks later,
- 17:22I'm sorry, I got that messed up.
- 17:23I'm reading my notes.
- 17:24My bad.
- 17:25So
- 17:29getting on this, so we're kind of jumping ahead and a few more things.
- 17:35Now we're gonna get, you know, kind of more into talking about
- 17:46now they, I, okay, let me, I'll get to the point.
- 17:51He said at the spa out the kilometers, they went, you know,
- 17:54flag to flag and, and took it to 'em.
- 17:58So they, that was outstanding.
- 18:00Now going into.
- 18:05Second place were Parks and Surtees in 0846.
- 18:10Now that was the final race.
- 18:12The final race prior to the Le Mans was the Nürburgring 1000 kilometers.
- 18:17So now I started on pole ahead of the Chaparral of Bonner and Phil Hill, which
- 18:22they were making their European debut.
- 18:24Well, however, while Surtees pulled clear of Bonner during the first hour, P3 came
- 18:28in soon after for an unscheduled check.
- 18:31And had to get a shock absorber.
- 18:35So, you know, obviously dropping down the order.
- 18:38Parks had to actually move the car back into 8th before the
- 18:40rear suspension just collapsed.
- 18:42Just after searches had taken the wheel for a second stint.
- 18:45So then a clutch failure at 3 quarters distance put the
- 18:490846 chassis out for good.
- 18:52And the chaperone went on to win, but they were chased home by a bunch of works Dino.
- 18:56So they still were represented pretty well, but the P3 didn't
- 18:59have much luck in there.
- 19:01So with two wins apiece for Ford and Ferrari for the 66 championship, the
- 19:05race we decided to result in 24 Hours of Le Mans, which took place, obviously,
- 19:08the weekend of June 18th and 19th.
- 19:11Now for this event, Ferrari had a trio of P3s in attendance for Parks and
- 19:14Surtees in 08 48, Gushet and Bandini in 08 44, Rodriguez and Ginter in 08 46.
- 19:22Now, unfortunately, I disagree between Sertiz and team manager, Eugenio
- 19:26Dragone saw the Englishman walk out.
- 19:28He was placed by reserve driver Ludovico Scarfiotti.
- 19:32I think everyone might know that story.
- 19:35Um, cause, you know, obviously Dragone had some favoritism going on.
- 19:40And Sertiz was not pleased about what was going on in the team orders
- 19:44that Dragone was putting together.
- 19:46So, he just said, screw this.
- 19:48He got in his car.
- 19:50Um, I can't remember when it was, um, it was a Ferrari and he got in it
- 19:56and drove to the factory in Maranello to confront Enzo face to face about
- 20:00it because he was just not happy.
- 20:03So now getting back to the race, you know, despite the presence of four P2s
- 20:08and threes from Ferrari's satellite teams, the race was a disaster for Ferrari.
- 20:14Scarfiatti wrecked 048 when he smashed into a near stationary
- 20:17Matra soon after midnight.
- 20:19Rodriguez and Ginter went out shortly before mid distance with a gearbox
- 20:22failure while And the much delayed Bandini guichet machine blew a head gas at 30.
- 20:2770, having limped around with an overheating engine for quite some time.
- 20:32Now, as we know what happened with that one, because thanks to their Ford's
- 20:35famous 1 2 3 finish, Le Mans, Ford won the championship by 38 points to Ferrari's 36.
- 20:45So, that's kind of a brief thing.
- 20:46I might have hacked that up a bit, and I apologize.
- 20:50So, that's my bad.
- 20:51I was trying to read my notes.
- 20:53My handwriting is absolutely horrendous.
- 20:55But as People know looking at these P3s, you know, they're absolutely
- 21:00stunning cars, you know, trying to find one come up for sale now is
- 21:05probably, you know, you're not going to see any of those going to change.
- 21:08They're going to change hands privately.
- 21:09Those are gonna be done off market and those are gonna be sold for
- 21:12several, several millions of dollars.
- 21:15But, you know, hopefully, you know, owners that get those cars and the,
- 21:18um, utilize them, take them out, take them to Goodwood, take them to the
- 21:22events, take them to Pebble Beach to stretch your legs, get them, you know,
- 21:26Those cars are made to be driven.
- 21:27All cars are made to be driven.
- 21:29You know, being stashed in place is unfortunate.
- 21:31You know, God bless these museums and stuff.
- 21:33But, you know, you really need to get out there and let those
- 21:36cars stretch their legs a bit.
- 21:38So, anyways, that's kind of what I wanted to chit chat about today.
- 21:44And kind of go over that.
- 21:46So, if anybody's got any questions or any corrections, which there
- 21:52probably are, in this, please email me.
- 21:54William at the FerrariMarketplace.
- 21:56com Let me know.
- 21:57I want to get a little more interactive with you guys.
- 21:59You know, we're not, don't have hundreds of thousands of people
- 22:01listening, but we do have a nice little select few so far, it looks like.
- 22:04So, Hey, reach out, let me know.
- 22:06Hey, suggest a topic.
- 22:07Let me know.
- 22:07I got research notes on tons and tons of stuff.
- 22:10Like I said, so we're going to kind of get this going on a weekly thing
- 22:13and drop new ones every Tuesday.
- 22:15So again, Hey, I appreciate you guys listening.
- 22:18Uh, and Hey, share it around, spread it around and get other people listening.
- 22:22And like I said, I'm gonna try and get some guests on and see what I can do.
- 22:25And of course, I'm gonna have to figure out how to do that with
- 22:27someone that's not in the same.
- 22:29Places me.
- 22:30So again, I'm not the most tech savvy.
- 22:33So again, guys, Hey, I really appreciate you guys listening and take
- 22:36care and we will be back next week.
- 22:39Thanks guys.
- 22:39Appreciate it.
