Latest / FSU Football: Doak Talk / JIMBO FISHER BACK TO FSU?! Is Florida State's Coaching Search ALREADY OVER?!
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So let's talk about these coaches a little bit.
- 0:02Speaker 2: The first coach we're going to talk about is Korsar
- 0:05Speaker 2: Jimbo Fisher.
- 0:06Speaker 1: Jimbo has speculated, well.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Not necessarily speculated, but he has created a lot of
- 0:11Speaker 2: buzz within the FSU fan base, good or bad, as
- 0:14Speaker 2: far as a lot of fans want to back. Other
- 0:17Speaker 2: fans kind of want to hold on to how he
- 0:18Speaker 2: left and that type of deal. And I'm not going to,
- 0:20Speaker 2: you know, discredit how each side feels on the situation.
- 0:24Speaker 2: You have valid reasons to feel how you feel. But
- 0:27Speaker 2: for me, I don't, I'm not a, This isn't an
- 0:30Speaker 2: emotional decision for me. It's strictly business. I think he'd
- 0:32Speaker 2: be a solid fit. But let's jump right into it.
- 0:35Speaker 2: So you got former FSU coach, national champion, multiple ACC chip.
- 0:40Speaker 1: I want to go on some pros and cons.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Some of the pros recruit still at one of the
- 0:46Speaker 2: best in the country, still one of the best recruiters
- 0:47Speaker 2: in the country.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Building a roster, you know he can do that.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Even at Florida State A & M, no matter the position,
- 0:55Speaker 2: you know he's been an elite recruiter. Going back to
- 0:57Speaker 2: LSU days as well. You know, we called them the Closer, Brown,
- 1:00Speaker 2: Brown Jacket, Jimbo, all those type of deals.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Even at A & M, I.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Think those guys had the number one recruiting class ever.
- 1:07Speaker 2: Even I don't think that class panned out. But from
- 1:09Speaker 2: a recruiting standpoint, he knows what he's doing. And, of course,
- 1:14Speaker 2: Elko has benefited from that with Jimbo's players. You know,
- 1:16Speaker 2: he benefited and went to the playoffs last year after
- 1:18Speaker 2: a pretty successful season for Texas A & M.
- 1:20Speaker 1: He's struggling right now.
- 1:21Speaker 2: But, again, he was able to benefit off the roster
- 1:24Speaker 2: that Jimbo had built out there at Texas A & M.
- 1:27Speaker 2: He'll be relatively cheap, too. He has the buyout from
- 1:31Speaker 2: Texas A & M. Who said something.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Like, oh, bitch, you cooking? It's time to cook, baby. So, again,
- 1:42Speaker 1: he's relatively cheap from a money standpoint.
- 1:43Speaker 2: He's getting like $ 7 million plus from Texas A &
- 1:45Speaker 2: M on an annual basis. You could throw that money elsewhere, right? So,
- 1:49Speaker 2: you don't have to pay a huge buyout to Jumbo
- 1:51Speaker 2: because you're already in the red, the neglet, so to speak,
- 1:54Speaker 2: with paying off Mike Norvell. You can offset that a
- 1:58Speaker 2: little bit with Jim O'Fisher. He'll come in on a
- 2:00Speaker 2: relatively cheap contract, and you can make it instead of heavy.
- 2:03Speaker 2: Win football games, right? Win football games. That's pretty much
- 2:06Speaker 2: all Jim O'Fisher has to do. Come in and win
- 2:07Speaker 2: football games. You get X amount of money. I think
- 2:10Speaker 2: he'll be okay with that because he knows he can
- 2:11Speaker 2: win in the ACC. If you guys look at the
- 2:13Speaker 2: 2027 schedule for FSU, it's a very doable schedule, right?
- 2:20Speaker 1: Very doable.
- 2:21Speaker 2: You don't have the LSUs of the world, the Bama's
- 2:23Speaker 2: of the world that we typically play whatever we've been
- 2:25Speaker 2: playing the last four years with the ACC contract. Of course,
- 2:29Speaker 2: we have Miami. Clemson is on the schedule, but they're
- 2:31Speaker 2: not the same Clemson. We won't get into the entire schedule,
- 2:34Speaker 2: but if you just look at it, it's not bad
- 2:35Speaker 2: at all. He's proving that he can build a program.
- 2:41Speaker 2: I know fans are pretty much sour on how he left,
- 2:43Speaker 2: but he understands the lay of the land. He's still
- 2:45Speaker 2: in town in Tallahassee. He's making calls to recruits. Well,
- 2:50Speaker 2: not necessarily recruits, but coaches in recruiting areas, South Georgia,
- 2:54Speaker 2: South Florida, and that type of deal. I have on
- 2:56Speaker 2: good authority that some high-profile recruits would flip to Jimbo
- 2:59Speaker 2: Fisher if he was named the head coach. Like, I
- 3:02Speaker 2: have that on high authority. If he was to flip,
- 3:05Speaker 2: I'm sorry, if he was to be hired at FSU,
- 3:07Speaker 2: I have on good authority that some high-profile recruits would flip,
- 3:14Speaker 2: including maybe some possible five stars as well. Just the
- 3:17Speaker 2: type of guy he is and the relationship he's built.
- 3:20Speaker 2: So those are some of the pros I feel like
- 3:21Speaker 2: he will have. And also, he just knows the ACC, man.
- 3:25Speaker 2: But let's get some of the cons, right? Possible cons.
- 3:29Speaker 2: Is he past his prime? A lot of people question that.
- 3:33Speaker 2: The glory years at FSU. And then, of course, things
- 3:36Speaker 2: kind of tailed off. And when things tailed off, it wasn't.
- 3:39Speaker 2: He was still winning 10 damn games, right? Going to
- 3:41Speaker 2: the Orange Bowl, competing for the ACC. At that point
- 3:44Speaker 2: in time, we weren't winning the ACC because Clemson and Dabo,
- 3:47Speaker 2: that's when Dabo was pretty much getting to his Dominant
- 3:50Speaker 2: ACC phase at that point in time. But you go
- 3:52Speaker 2: back to the 2016 game, the Dalvin Cook game, hell,
- 3:56Speaker 2: we went blow for blow with those guys and really
- 3:58Speaker 2: should have won that game at that point in time.
- 4:01Speaker 2: Then 2017, we all know Jimbo checked out early in
- 4:03Speaker 2: that season. And after losing DeAndre Francois and starting a
- 4:06Speaker 2: true freshman in James Blackman, the rest was history. That's
- 4:10Speaker 2: why we won six and seven and seven and six
- 4:11Speaker 2: that year, if I'm not mistaken. He ended up going
- 4:14Speaker 2: to Texas A & M. He passed his prime. Outdated philosophy.
- 4:18Speaker 2: one of our biggest concerns, the biggest complaints that Florida
- 4:21Speaker 2: state was the playbook and him being office of coordinator
- 4:24Speaker 2: at that point in time, being a play caller and
- 4:26Speaker 2: the head coach.
- 4:27Speaker 1: We knew it was outdated.
- 4:28Speaker 2: Um, we complained about, and it's funny as hell because
- 4:32Speaker 2: we are begging for field goals now, but it'll be
- 4:34Speaker 2: certain situations where it was like fourth and one or
- 4:36Speaker 2: fourth inches and Jimbo wouldn't go for it. And he'll
- 4:40Speaker 2: end up kicking a field goal or something along those lines.
- 4:42Speaker 2: And fast forward to Mike Norvell. She don't matter fourth
- 4:44Speaker 2: and whatever Mike's going forward at any point in the field. But, um,
- 4:50Speaker 2: With that being said, I would not want him calling plays.
- 4:55Speaker 2: I would need him to bring in an offensive coordinator.
- 4:57Speaker 2: And from what I've been hearing, that's actually the plan.
- 5:00Speaker 2: That would be the plan is him to bring in
- 5:01Speaker 2: an actual offensive coordinator. So is the philosophy outdated? That's
- 5:05Speaker 2: a question as well. He was fired from Texas A
- 5:07Speaker 2: & M. He was fired from Texas A & M.
- 5:09Speaker 2: Had a 45-25 record there, which is pretty damn good,
- 5:12Speaker 2: to be honest with you. He was fired after going
- 5:14Speaker 2: 5-7 and 6-4 his last two years there.
- 5:17Speaker 1: There's some context, in my opinion, to that. He lost
- 5:21Speaker 1: his starting quarterback in both of those years.
- 5:23Speaker 2: I think one of those years he was down to
- 5:25Speaker 2: like a third string quarterback.
- 5:27Speaker 1: And also at.
- 5:30Speaker 2: Mike Elko, for example, his record is damn near identical
- 5:33Speaker 2: to Jimbo Fisher at this point in time in their
- 5:36Speaker 2: tenure as a Texas A & M head coach. The
- 5:39Speaker 2: damn graphic is amazing because it's also similar to Kevin Sumlin.
- 5:44Speaker 2: If you guys remember When Jimbo first took the job
- 5:47Speaker 2: at A & M, you see the comparisons between him
- 5:49Speaker 2: and Kevin Sumlin at this point in time in their tenure,
- 5:53Speaker 2: and they're as damn near identical. If you look at
- 5:55Speaker 2: the same graphic with Mike Elko and Jimbo Fisher at
- 5:58Speaker 2: this time during their tenure, it's pretty much the same, record-wise.
- 6:04Speaker 2: What that tells me is it's a Texas A &
- 6:07Speaker 2: M issue. You have all the money in the world, this, that,
- 6:10Speaker 2: and third. Those guys just aren't built to win. They're
- 6:13Speaker 2: just not that type of program. No matter who the
- 6:15Speaker 2: head coach is, it's just one of those programs that'll
- 6:18Speaker 2: never win.
- 6:19Speaker 1: Who the head coach, no.
- 6:20Speaker 2: Matter how many resources you pour in, all the money, whatever,
- 6:22Speaker 2: it's just not that program. So even 45 and 25
- 6:26Speaker 2: isn't bad. It's not bad, but at the same time
- 6:30Speaker 2: with how he was recruiting, which is what we want,
- 6:32Speaker 2: he was bringing top 10, top 5 classes annually with
- 6:36Speaker 2: Texas A & M, so.
- 6:37Speaker 1: You expect better results. I get that 100%. I think
- 6:40Speaker 1: that's a Texas A & M issue.
- 6:42Speaker 2: You give me those recruits at Florida State, those recruiting
- 6:44Speaker 2: classes at Florida State competing with the ACC schedule, we'll
- 6:48Speaker 2: be cooking, in my opinion. But, yeah, at the same
- 6:52Speaker 2: down point as during the tenure as far as, like
- 6:56Speaker 2: I said, Kevin Sloan and Mike Elko, pretty much the
- 6:58Speaker 2: same record. So those are the cons that people have
- 7:01Speaker 2: with Jimbo Fisher. And I know a lot of fans have.
- 7:04Speaker 2: the emotions involved in how you left, you know, quote, unquote,
- 7:06Speaker 2: quit on the team and that type of deal.
- 7:08Speaker 1: I get it. I definitely understand that. But that was,
- 7:13Speaker 1: what year was that shit?
- 7:15Speaker 2: 2017?
- 7:15Speaker 1: Damn near 10 years ago. I moved on from that.
- 7:18Speaker 2: It's time to play some big boy football, and I
- 7:21Speaker 2: think Jimbo Fisher would be a good fit. He's hungry
- 7:23Speaker 2: for the job. You get a chance to learn from
- 7:25Speaker 2: your mistakes at Texas A & M and Florida State
- 7:28Speaker 2: as well, too, and get your fire going and figure out,
- 7:31Speaker 2: you know, what you can do differently on your next opportunity.
- 7:35Speaker 2: I do believe this next opportunity will be a long-haul
- 7:37Speaker 2: opportunity for Jimbo Fisher if, before the opportunity, he wanted
- 7:41Speaker 2: to finish out his career and retire at Florida State,
- 7:43Speaker 2: just in my opinion. This is the program he really
- 7:45Speaker 2: didn't want to leave in hindsight, which he had to
- 7:48Speaker 2: with everything that Texas A & M threw at him
- 7:52Speaker 2: at that point in time. So we'll see how things
- 7:54Speaker 2: play out, but Jimbo Fisher is a name to watch
- 7:56Speaker 2: out for as well. Well, not as well, but of
- 7:58Speaker 2: course he's a name to watch out for as he's
- 7:59Speaker 2: been kind of tied to it within, I guess you
- 8:02Speaker 2: could say, the last month or so.
