Transcript
- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Swahili with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Ready for another tiny lesson? Lucas: Today we're going to the market again. Last time we bought eggs. Luna: Oh, I remember! 'Nataka mayai.' I loved that one. Lucas: Yes. Now let's buy tomatoes. 'Nyanya' means tomato. Luna: Nyanya. That sounds like 'nyanya', like a grandma. Lucas: Exactly. But also tomato. So to say 'I want tomatoes', it's 'Nataka nyanya'. Luna: Nataka nyanya. Lucas: Good. Now the seller will ask 'Nyanya ngapi?' — how many tomatoes? Luna: Nyanya ngapi? So 'ngapi' is how many? Lucas: Correct. You can answer with a number, like 'Nyanya tano, tafadhali' — five tomatoes, please. Luna: Nyanya tano, tafadhali. Lucas: Perfect. Then you ask 'Bei gani?' — what's the price? Luna: Bei gani? We learned that for eggs too. Lucas: Yes. And the seller might say 'Nyanya ni shilingi mia moja' — tomatoes are one hundred shillings each. Luna: Nyanya ni shilingi mia moja. So 'mia moja' is one hundred. Lucas: Right. Let's practice a full conversation. I'll be the seller. You say you want tomatoes. Luna: Nataka nyanya. Lucas: Nyanya ngapi? Luna: Nyanya tano, tafadhali. Lucas: Bei gani? Luna: Nyanya ni shilingi mia moja. Lucas: Oh, I switched roles! Sorry. Let me do that again. I'm the seller: 'Nyanya ni shilingi mia moja.' Now you say 'Asante'. Luna: Asante. Lucas: You'd also say 'Tafadhali' when asking for something. So 'Nyanya tano, tafadhali'. Luna: Nyanya tano, tafadhali. Lucas: Exactly. Now let's do the full thing one more time, from start. Luna: Okay. Nataka nyanya. Lucas: Nyanya ngapi? Luna: Nyanya tano, tafadhali. Lucas: Bei gani? Luna: Nyanya ni shilingi mia moja. Asante! Lucas: You did it. And you even added 'Asante' naturally. Luna: It felt good. I could actually buy tomatoes now. Lucas: That's the goal. And hey, if today's lesson was useful to you, these episodes stay ad-free because of listener support.
