- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:30So let's talk about assessing our boundaries as we go into the
- 0:35holiday season. There is one thing that we know
- 0:39for sure that takes place and we all feel like I have to have
- 0:43boundaries. I have to know, I have to put up
- 0:45boundaries. I have to make sure I know this.
- 0:49This word is tricky for me because while it's necessary and
- 0:52people get it, when we use it, I almost feel like, you know, it's
- 0:57that old, old story of like, well, when you build a wall, you
- 1:00keep things out, but you also keep things in and it's, it can
- 1:05be tricky. And sometimes while you're
- 1:07keeping out the bad stuff, you're also keeping out good
- 1:10stuff. So I like to look at this more
- 1:13in the sense of using boundaries.
- 1:16I'm really kind of prefer for myself anyway to say, OK, what
- 1:21are my rules around this? And, and rules seem much more
- 1:25like I'm a rule follower in general.
- 1:27So I want to say, OK, let me look at this and really figure
- 1:32out the particulars of how I operate with this.
- 1:36What are my internal rules that are not written down or my
- 1:39external rules for this and assess what needs to happen so I
- 1:43can go through this. Now I'm bringing this up because
- 1:47I'm hosting Thanksgiving coming up in a month.
- 1:50And I am, I think it's actually a month from, yeah, it's, it's
- 1:54just about a month away. So, and I have to look, I'm
- 1:58having a lot of people and I'm having my cousin help me in the
- 2:02kitchen. And we are doing this together.
- 2:04And I'm looking at it and I'm saying, OK, I'm going to have to
- 2:08really understand my rules because my kitchen is like, I'm
- 2:14not the cook in my house. But when I do cook, I want to be
- 2:17100% focused on organization and doing things a certain way
- 2:23efficiently so that I feel like I don't lose control of it all
- 2:27because my certainty girl will be driving to make sure I don't
- 2:30miss anything. Because I'm not inherently a
- 2:32good cook. I love to bake and do things
- 2:34like that, but I'm not a good cook.
- 2:36So I have to pay attention. By my nature, I'm not a good
- 2:39cook. I I just experiment too quickly
- 2:41and then it goes all to hell in a handbasket.
- 2:44So I have to follow the rules and I know that and I'm
- 2:48assessing what has to happen for me to have a successful time.
- 2:52What are my rules around this? So not necessarily a boundary,
- 2:55but a rule. And I also know that I have
- 2:58guests that are coming that all have different needs.
- 3:00So I'm going to make sure that I understand all of it.
- 3:04I also know that as my guests come and I, you know, you have
- 3:09all these different personalities, all these
- 3:11different things. I have lots of animals here on
- 3:14the farm. I have my dogs, I have a cat.
- 3:18I'm going to have to think about my rules around engagement with
- 3:22my animals because if there's one thing that sets me off, it's
- 3:26that seeing somebody do something that I don't think is
- 3:29a good thing for my animals. And I have to make sure I have
- 3:34myself clear on that so that I handle it ahead of time.
- 3:38Many of you who are regular followers know I have a very
- 3:40large American bulldog, and he is like a Sherman tank.
- 3:44He does not feel things. He's, you know, gigantic and
- 3:48just like literally like a tank, takes a lot of hits.
- 3:52But because of that part of him, he doesn't necessarily do well
- 3:56in big groups of people because he's always moving around,
- 4:00checking everybody out and drooling.
- 4:03And people don't like that. So I have to take him out of
- 4:08that before it even happens. A rule of mine is he will not be
- 4:11out with everybody. I'll bring him out at some point
- 4:14in time, but I will put him away so that he doesn't get stressed
- 4:18out by all their energy and they don't get stressed out by his
- 4:21energy. It's just a good way to think of
- 4:24it. You have to assess all the
- 4:27little factors. My chickens, OK, they are, they
- 4:32are a big hit out here. Everybody wants to come see
- 4:34them. But when kids run to pick them
- 4:37up, it horrifies them because remember, they are prey items.
- 4:41They all day long the Roosters are working to protect them
- 4:45because everything wants to eat them, whether it's a fox,
- 4:48whether it's a coyote, whether it's a red tail hawk, a smaller
- 4:52hawk, owls, you know, you name it, we have it out here.
- 4:57And they are prey items. So they, they trust the people
- 5:01they know. And yes, they are smart enough
- 5:03to recognize the people they know.
- 5:05And when they don't recognize somebody, they look at you like
- 5:08you are a threat. End of story.
- 5:10So I have to make sure I have the rules up around that so I'm
- 5:13not adding stress to myself. Hopefully these examples let you
- 5:18see I'm assess the rules and whether you use the word rules
- 5:22or boundaries, whatever works for you, assess where you are,
- 5:25figure it out so that you can be successful with it and limit the
- 5:28stress. Okay, my friends, I hope you
- 5:30have a blessed day and I will see you tomorrow.
- 5:33Bye.
