- 0:00Speaker 1: In Glenville, mild-mannered office worker Wilbur Todd finds himself pushed
- 0:04Speaker 1: toward public life after an unusual chain of events brings
- 0:08Speaker 1: him unexpected attention. On April 8, 1940, Lux Radio Theater
- 0:12Speaker 1: presented episode 258, Mama Loves Papa, adapted from the.
- 0:14Speaker 2: 1933 Paramount comedy film.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Jim and Marion Jordan, familiar to radio audiences as Fibber
- 0:27Speaker 1: McGee and Molly, appear as Wilbur and his ambitious wife, Jessie,
- 0:32Speaker 1: with Cecil B. DeMille as host. As Wilbur faces the
- 0:36Speaker 1: pressures of local politics and a powerful playground equipment interest,
- 0:41Speaker 1: an ordinary household is drawn into civic affairs. And now
- 0:46Speaker 1: we return to the original broadcast.
- 0:50Speaker 2: The Hollywood Radio Theater. The Hollywood Radio Theater. Presenting Jim
- 1:08Speaker 2: and Marion Jordan, starring as Fiddler McGee and Molly in
- 1:13Speaker 2: a radio adaptation of the Paramount Picture, Mama Loved Papa.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Here's your host, Frank Brzee. Greetings again, ladies and gentlemen.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Certain elements just naturally go together. Corned beef and cabbage,
- 1:30Speaker 2: April and showers, Fibber McGee and Molly. For many years,
- 1:34Speaker 2: the irresistible Mr. McGee and the immovable Molly helped to
- 1:39Speaker 2: make it a more cheerful world, and their weekly broadcast
- 1:43Speaker 2: was a national habit. Now, for the first time, they
- 1:46Speaker 2: assume the role of the legitimate actor and star for
- 1:50Speaker 2: us in the play Mama Loves Papa. Our play takes
- 1:54Speaker 2: Fibber and Molly into new territory, when Fibber, as William Todd,
- 1:59Speaker 2: quite accidentally gets involved in politics.
- 2:02Speaker 3: As Mrs. Todd, Molly is still his chief counselor and
- 2:06Speaker 3: does her part to get him out of trouble after
- 2:10Speaker 3: she's gotten him in. Our part for the moment is
- 2:13Speaker 3: to see that the curtain goes up right away on
- 2:16Speaker 3: the first act of Mama Loves Papa, starring Fibber McGee
- 2:20Speaker 3: as Wilbur Todd and Molly as Jessie Todd.
- 2:35Speaker 2: If the locale of our story didn't have to have
- 2:37Speaker 2: a name, we'd call it Average City, USA. If our
- 2:42Speaker 2: characters didn't have to be called something distinctive, we'd refer
- 2:46Speaker 2: to them as Mr. and Mrs.
- 2:48Speaker 3: Everybody. As it is, our.
- 2:50Speaker 2: Story takes place in Glenville and our people are the Todd.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Like most of us, they're an average, everyday, perfectly normal.
- 2:57Speaker 3: And happy family.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Also like most of us, they have ham and eggs
- 3:02Speaker 2: for breakfast, slightly burned toast, and a mild domestic spat.
- 3:07Speaker 2: They've reached the last course, the spat.
- 3:12Speaker 4: All right, all right. Now what's the trouble?
- 3:15Speaker 3: I didn't say anything was the trouble. Did I say anything?
- 3:18Speaker 4: Well, then why give me that black look?
- 3:20Speaker 3: I'm just passing it on, Mama. This toast has been
- 3:24Speaker 3: giving me a black look. See?
- 3:26Speaker 5: Now, listen, there's nothing wrong with that toast, Wilbur. Just
- 3:30Speaker 5: a little burnt on the edges. That's good for you.
- 3:33Speaker 4: It's... Why, that's charcoal.
- 3:35Speaker 3: I don't like charcoal, even with butter on it. Besides, Mama,
- 3:41Speaker 3: it worries me. I know where to go to get
- 3:44Speaker 3: cinders out of my eye, but when I get them
- 3:45Speaker 3: in my throat.
- 3:46Speaker 5: Now, now, you listen here, Wilbur. I've told you time
- 3:49Speaker 5: and time again we need a new toaster. If you
- 3:51Speaker 5: hadn't been so selfish and given up smoking, we'd have
- 3:55Speaker 5: enough coupons by now to get a.
- 3:56Speaker 4: Really decent one.
- 4:00Speaker 3: All right, Mama, all right.
- 4:01Speaker 4: I can't get you off to.
- 4:02Speaker 5: Work every morning and straighten your suspenders and shave the
- 4:05Speaker 5: back of your neck and find your other sleeve garter
- 4:08Speaker 5: and watch the toaster all at the.
- 4:09Speaker 4: Same time, Wilbur. But, Mama, I didn't... What we need
- 4:13Speaker 4: is a maid.
- 4:15Speaker 3: Wilbur.
- 4:16Speaker 4: Stop scraping that toast whilst I'm speaking to you.
- 4:19Speaker 3: Oh, excuse me, Mama. What were you saying?
- 4:21Speaker 5: I said what we need is a maid. And we
- 4:22Speaker 5: could have one, too, if you just had a little
- 4:24Speaker 5: more gumption.
- 4:25Speaker 3: How's gumption going to get a maid?
- 4:27Speaker 5: You know what I'm talking about. They don't appreciate you
- 4:30Speaker 5: down at that office.
- 4:31Speaker 4: You know they don't.
- 4:32Speaker 3: Uh-huh.
- 4:33Speaker 5: You're worth twice the money you're getting now.
- 4:35Speaker 3: Uh-huh.
- 4:36Speaker 4: More than twice the money. And if I were you,
- 4:38Speaker 4: I'd certainly ask for it.
- 4:40Speaker 3: Uh-huh.
- 4:42Speaker 4: How long have you been working for Mr.
- 4:43Speaker 3: Kirkwood? Uh-huh.
- 4:46Speaker 2: Oh!
- 4:47Speaker 3: Ten years.
- 4:48Speaker 4: Ten years. And not one raise in all that time.
- 4:51Speaker 4: Not one raise. Who does he think you are?
- 4:55Speaker 2: I got a bonus once.
- 4:57Speaker 5: You know what's the trouble with you, Wilbur? You're afraid
- 5:00Speaker 5: of yourself. You haven't got any confidence in.
- 5:03Speaker 4: Your own abilities.
- 5:04Speaker 5: Your thoughts are all focused inside of you.
- 5:07Speaker 4: You're always scared of what people are thinking. You're, uh, you're, uh, uh, inventors, Wilbur.
- 5:16Speaker 3: Introvert. Hmm? You mean introvert.
- 5:19Speaker 4: How do you know?
- 5:21Speaker 2: I read the same magazine article.
- 5:25Speaker 5: Well, anyway, that's what you are. What you've got to
- 5:28Speaker 5: do is show off a little, crack jokes with people,
- 5:31Speaker 5: act big. Then they think you are somebody, like that Mr.
- 5:35Speaker 5: Phillips next door.
- 5:36Speaker 4: He's no inviter.
- 5:39Speaker 3: Introvert.
- 5:40Speaker 4: Well, he isn't.
- 5:41Speaker 2: Besides, I don't know any jokes.
- 5:43Speaker 4: Well, you could make some up, couldn't you?
- 5:45Speaker 3: I don't know, maybe. You really think that would help, huh?
- 5:48Speaker 4: Well, it certainly couldn't do any harm.
- 5:51Speaker 5: Oh, Wilbur, I don't mean to be always picking on you,
- 5:54Speaker 5: but we're just not getting anywhere.
- 5:56Speaker 4: You see that, don't you?
- 5:58Speaker 5: We're right where we were the day we got married.
- 6:01Speaker 5: I hate to think of where we might be ten
- 6:03Speaker 5: years from now.
- 6:04Speaker 4: It's only for your own good, Wilbur.
- 6:07Speaker 3: I know. You're right, Mama. But don't worry. Things will
- 6:10Speaker 3: be okay, and I'll... Well, I'll crack jokes with the
- 6:13Speaker 3: best of them. You wait and see.
- 6:15Speaker 4: Oh, it's not just cracking jokes.
- 6:17Speaker 3: Well, you said it would help. Oh, Wilbur. Oh, gosh.
- 6:23Speaker 2: There's the 810.
- 6:24Speaker 3: I've got to run.
- 6:24Speaker 4: Finish your coffee.
- 6:25Speaker 3: No time, Mama. Where's your hat?
- 6:27Speaker 2: I got it.
- 6:27Speaker 3: So long, Mama. Be back on the 6-5.
- 6:29Speaker 4: Aren't you going to kiss me?
- 6:30Speaker 2: Oh, sure.
- 6:31Speaker 3: Goodbye. Be a good girl and don't take any wooden nickels.
- 6:36Speaker 4: Don't you get it, Mom? It ain't funny, Wilbur.
- 6:39Speaker 2: Oh, well.
- 6:42Speaker 3: I do better on Tuesdays. Now, let's see, Miss Baedeker,
- 6:57Speaker 3: where were we in that letter?
- 6:59Speaker 4: And you may expect this order as soon as possible.
- 7:02Speaker 2: That's right.
- 7:03Speaker 3: Now, take this. Uh, let me see, uh... Mr.
- 7:08Speaker 4: Todd, I wish you'd hurry. I ain't got to take
- 7:10Speaker 4: eight letters from Mr. Johnson yet.
- 7:12Speaker 2: Thanks, familiar.
- 7:14Speaker 3: But don't rush me, Miss Baedeker. Oh, here it is.
- 7:16Speaker 2: Oh, uh, uh, the, uh.
- 7:20Speaker 3: The shipment will include the additional furniture for the sanctuary...
- 7:25Speaker 3: Yours very truly, Kirkwood Furniture Company, Pearl Wilbertox. That'll be all,
- 7:29Speaker 3: Miss Bedecker.
- 7:30Speaker 4: And that last sentence, is that word sanctuary?
- 7:33Speaker 2: Yeah, sanctuary. Thank you very much.
- 7:36Speaker 3: Huh?
- 7:39Speaker 2: Oh, never mind, never mind.
- 7:41Speaker 3: Hey, hey, Todd. Yes, Mr. Burke, what is it? The
- 7:45Speaker 3: boss wants to see you. Better get in there. Oh, sure. Hey, Burke,
- 7:49Speaker 3: a rather amusing thing just happened here. I was dictating... Yeah, yeah,
- 7:52Speaker 3: all right. See me later, will you? And don't forget
- 7:54Speaker 3: about Mr. Kirkwood. Oh, sure, sure. Good morning, Mr. Kirkwood.
- 8:03Speaker 3: Come in, Todd. What took you so long? Well, I
- 8:06Speaker 3: was just... Todd, I want to speak to you about
- 8:08Speaker 3: that Chicago consignment. We're way behind in our shipment. And
- 8:11Speaker 3: if we don't put our shoulders to the wheel, we'll
- 8:13Speaker 3: lose the whole order. Now, I want you to bear
- 8:16Speaker 3: down on the factory. Make them jump, hear? Jump? Yes, sir.
- 8:19Speaker 3: I want action, and lots of action. Oh, you'll get it, Mr. Kirkwood. Yes, sir. Ha!
- 8:23Speaker 3: What's the matter with you? Oh, pardon me, Mr. Kirkwood,
- 8:28Speaker 3: but a rather amusing thing happened this morning. Huh? Yeah.
- 8:31Speaker 3: I said a rather amusing little thing happened this morning.
- 8:35Speaker 3: Miss Baedeker said to me, I was dictating, you know,
- 8:38Speaker 3: and she said to me, Mr. Todd, was that last
- 8:42Speaker 3: word sanctuary? And I said, yes, sanctuary much.
- 8:47Speaker 4: Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
- 8:58Speaker 3: It was sort of a.
- 9:01Speaker 2: Joke, you know, comical.
- 9:04Speaker 3: Todd, are you crazy? Huh? I'm just through talking myself
- 9:08Speaker 3: hoarse to you, and you stand there and tell me jokes. But, Mr. Kirkwood,
- 9:11Speaker 3: I don't... That's the whole trouble with business today. Everybody
- 9:14Speaker 3: thinks it's funny.
- 9:15Speaker 4: But, Mr.
- 9:15Speaker 3: You don't see me laughing, do you? I'll say so. Well,
- 9:17Speaker 3: remember that.
- 9:19Speaker 2: And if you can't remember it, let me remind you
- 9:21Speaker 2: that there are always ten men waiting to take over
- 9:23Speaker 2: your desk.
- 9:24Speaker 3: Now get out! Yes, sir. Yes, sir.
- 9:28Speaker 2: Oh, Mr.
- 9:31Speaker 6: Todd, I was just thinking over what you said.
- 9:34Speaker 4: Sanctuary must.
- 9:36Speaker 6: That's very funny, Mr.
- 9:37Speaker 3: Todd.
- 9:37Speaker 7: It is, huh?
- 9:38Speaker 4: It means by saying thank you very much.
- 9:40Speaker 3: Doesn't it?
- 9:43Speaker 6: Oh, I didn't get it before.
- 9:45Speaker 7: Hmm.
- 9:46Speaker 4: Oh, I almost forgot. Your wife's on the phone, Mr.
- 9:49Speaker 3: Todd.
- 9:49Speaker 2: Oh, thanks.
- 9:51Speaker 3: Hello, Mama.
- 9:51Speaker 4: Hello, Wilbur. How's everything going, dearie?
- 9:55Speaker 3: Oh, fine, fine. Just dandy.
- 9:58Speaker 4: I just wanted to remind you that I'm going to...
- 10:00Speaker 4: to the ladies' club meeting this afternoon.
- 10:03Speaker 2: Oh, you want me to pick up the hamburger on
- 10:05Speaker 2: my way home?
- 10:06Speaker 4: Uh, will you, Papa?
- 10:08Speaker 5: We're going to have a pretty important speaker today.
- 10:11Speaker 4: Dr.
- 10:12Speaker 3: Basil Kane on Marriage With Her Bounce.
- 10:15Speaker 4: I wouldn't want to miss that.
- 10:16Speaker 3: Oh, no, no.
- 10:17Speaker 2: Of course not.
- 10:18Speaker 3: Well, you run along and have a good time, Mama.
- 10:21Speaker 4: All right.
- 10:21Speaker 8: Goodbye, dearie.
- 10:22Speaker 3: Goodbye. Marriage wither bound. I'd like to hear that one myself.
- 10:37Speaker 2: And so, in conclusion, let me leave one thought with
- 10:41Speaker 2: you ladies. That behind every man's success in this world,
- 10:45Speaker 2: there is a woman. Who was behind Napoleon? Why, Josephine,
- 10:49Speaker 2: of course.
- 10:50Speaker 3: And who was behind George Washington? Martha. Martha. And who
- 10:55Speaker 3: was behind King Solomon? King Solomon had a great deal
- 10:59Speaker 3: behind him. Oh, but seriously, though, in every.
- 11:03Speaker 2: Man's heart, ladies, is the seed of success. Waiting, waiting
- 11:08Speaker 2: in the darkness for the sunshine of a woman's encouragement
- 11:12Speaker 2: to make it flower.
- 11:14Speaker 3: Thank you. Now, are there any questions, ladies?
- 11:20Speaker 4: Well, Dr.
- 11:20Speaker 3: Payne... Yes, madam?
- 11:22Speaker 5: What I want to know is, well, how exactly can
- 11:25Speaker 5: I shine on my husband?
- 11:26Speaker 3: Well, may I see you after the meeting, madam? Now,
- 11:31Speaker 3: are there any more general questions?
- 11:36Speaker 5: I want to help, Wilbur, but I just don't know
- 11:38Speaker 5: how to go about it. I thought maybe you could
- 11:41Speaker 5: suggest something.
- 11:42Speaker 3: Well, Mrs. Todd, just what seems to be the trouble
- 11:44Speaker 3: with your husband?
- 11:45Speaker 4: Well, now I'll tell you.
- 11:47Speaker 3: In the first place... Just a moment. I haven't had
- 11:50Speaker 3: too much time. My train, you know.
- 11:52Speaker 4: Oh, well.
- 11:52Speaker 3: Mrs. Todd, have you ever thought of the value of clothes? Clothes?
- 11:57Speaker 3: As an expression of personality. Oh. As an advertisement, so
- 12:01Speaker 3: to speak.
- 12:01Speaker 7: Oh, yes.
- 12:02Speaker 2: To tell the world exactly what we are or what
- 12:04Speaker 2: we would like to be.
- 12:06Speaker 3: Does your husband dress well?
- 12:08Speaker 4: No, just warm.
- 12:10Speaker 3: I thought so.
- 12:12Speaker 2: He looks like an unsuccessful man, and so he is
- 12:15Speaker 2: an unsuccessful man.
- 12:16Speaker 3: Oh.
- 12:16Speaker 2: He tells the world beforehand that no one is to
- 12:19Speaker 2: take him too seriously, that his opinion on any matter
- 12:22Speaker 2: of importance is not worth knowing.
- 12:24Speaker 4: Oh, you mean if Wilbur would dress up a little,
- 12:26Speaker 4: he'd get along, huh?
- 12:27Speaker 2: But of course, my dear lady. There's something about clothes,
- 12:31Speaker 2: the right kind of clothes, that keeps the man on
- 12:33Speaker 2: his toes. Spiritually alert, as it were.
- 12:37Speaker 3: You try it. Make him dress well. Look important. And
- 12:41Speaker 3: then watch him take his place in the world.
- 12:43Speaker 4: Dr. Payne, I think you've got it. Mama, I won't
- 12:55Speaker 4: do it.
- 12:56Speaker 3: I won't wear a high hat for anybody.
- 12:59Speaker 2: No, sir.
- 12:59Speaker 5: Now, now, Wilbur, I don't want any nonsense. You try
- 13:03Speaker 5: that hat on again and see how it looks.
- 13:05Speaker 2: But a high silk hat, Mama. What will people think
- 13:08Speaker 2: of me? How can I face my friends in a
- 13:11Speaker 2: high silk hat?
- 13:12Speaker 4: You haven't got any friends.
- 13:15Speaker 3: Well, I can hope, can't I? Oh, gosh, Mama, listen.
- 13:19Speaker 3: Have you decided, sir, what hat will it be, please?
- 13:22Speaker 4: This one here, the silk one.
- 13:23Speaker 3: No, sir, I won't wear it.
- 13:24Speaker 4: Wrap it up, please.
- 13:25Speaker 3: Yes, but, Mama, will you listen a minute?
- 13:28Speaker 4: Keep quiet.
- 13:29Speaker 3: Anything else, sir? No. Oh, yes, there is.
- 13:31Speaker 5: He wants what goes with it. You know, with the
- 13:33Speaker 5: high silk hat.
- 13:34Speaker 4: Oh, yes, yes, of course.
- 13:35Speaker 3: The morning coat.
- 13:37Speaker 4: Yes, the morning coat. And striped pants and a pair
- 13:40Speaker 4: of spats.
- 13:41Speaker 7: But.
- 13:42Speaker 3: For me?
- 13:43Speaker 4: And I want everything to be an expression of his personality.
- 13:46Speaker 3: I'll try, madam. Emil, here. Mama, you're making a terrible mistake.
- 13:51Speaker 4: This is a waste of money.
- 13:53Speaker 6: Measure the gentleman for a morning coat and tell him, Emil,
- 13:56Speaker 6: we meet here.
- 13:57Speaker 3: Mama, will you just be reasonable?
- 13:59Speaker 4: Stand still, Wilbur.
- 14:01Speaker 2: When am I going to wear this? I haven't been
- 14:03Speaker 2: to a wedding in ten years.
- 14:04Speaker 4: You're not going to a wedding.
- 14:05Speaker 3: Well, what started this anyway? I....
- 14:09Speaker 4: What's the matter?
- 14:10Speaker 3: He tickles. Oh, cut it out, bud.
- 14:13Speaker 4: Cut it out.
- 14:17Speaker 3: Now listen, Mama. Now, sir, if you just step over this.
- 14:19Speaker 4: Way, we'll see what you've got to do.
- 14:21Speaker 3: Mama. Mama, please don't let them do this to me.
- 14:24Speaker 4: Wilbur, it's no use. You've got to advertise yourself, Wilbur.
- 14:29Speaker 3: Oh, Dr. Payne. So I've got him to thank for this, huh? Dr.
- 14:34Speaker 4: Payne is a very successful man.
- 14:35Speaker 3: Well, whatever. I'll bet he wasn't all dressed up in
- 14:38Speaker 3: a high hat and spat, was he? No, he wasn't. Well,
- 14:40Speaker 3: there you are.
- 14:41Speaker 4: But he probably is dressed up when he goes to business.
- 14:44Speaker 3: Yeah, when he goes to.
- 14:46Speaker 4: Mama.
- 14:48Speaker 3: Mama, you don't mean that you expect me... You can't
- 14:51Speaker 3: mean in the office? That high hat?
- 14:54Speaker 4: Oh, no, Mama.
- 14:55Speaker 3: No.
- 14:56Speaker 5: Oh, now, someday, Wilbur, you'll thank.
- 14:59Speaker 4: Me for this.
- 15:00Speaker 3: Oh, Mama. Mama.
- 15:14Speaker 4: Gwennie, Gwennie, did you see Mr. Todd this morning? Yeah,
- 15:19Speaker 4: I saw him come in. He had on a silk hat. Yeah,
- 15:23Speaker 4: and sat and sat. Gee, he looked awful pale, didn't he?
- 15:28Speaker 3: Yeah, it's too bad, all right.
- 15:31Speaker 4: I sure feel sorry for him.
- 15:34Speaker 3: Good morning, Todd. Oh, hello, Burke. I'm awfully sorry, Todd.
- 15:39Speaker 2: Was it anyone close?
- 15:45Speaker 3: Huh? Well, when's the funeral today?
- 15:49Speaker 2: Oh, the funeral.
- 15:54Speaker 3: Yes, the funeral. We couldn't help but notice, Todd, the
- 15:58Speaker 3: clothes and all. Oh, yes. Yes, of course. And the
- 16:02Speaker 3: whole force wants me to express their regret. Now, if
- 16:05Speaker 3: there's anything we can do, don't hesitate, will you? Oh, yes. Sure. Morning, Mr. Badeger. Morning, Mr.
- 16:13Speaker 4: Kirkwood.
- 16:13Speaker 3: Morning, Bert. Good morning, sir. Good morning, Tom.
- 16:17Speaker 7: Oh.
- 16:17Speaker 3: Oh, I'm sorry, Tom. The immediate family? Well, uh.
- 16:26Speaker 2: Good morning, Mr.
- 16:27Speaker 3: Kirkwood. No, not very immediate. Mrs. Todd's uncle. Oh, now,
- 16:35Speaker 3: that's too bad. That's too bad. Well, now, listen, you
- 16:38Speaker 3: needn't hang around, Todd. You just take the day off.
- 16:41Speaker 4: Oh, but, Mr.
- 16:42Speaker 3: Kirkwood, that won't be necessary.
- 16:43Speaker 4: Huh?
- 16:44Speaker 3: Well, I mean, the noon hour will be sufficient. Nonsense. Nonsense.
- 16:49Speaker 3: You ought to be home consoling Mrs. Todd. Now, go on.
- 16:52Speaker 3: Run along. Run along, Todd.
- 16:54Speaker 2: Oh, but, Mr.
- 16:55Speaker 3: Kirkwood. Now, you do as I say. Well, all right.
- 16:58Speaker 3: Thank you. Not at all. And, oh, Todd. Yes, sir?
- 17:02Speaker 3: I'm sorry, Todd. Fine state of how you do. Get
- 17:16Speaker 3: all dressed up to go to work and they think
- 17:18Speaker 3: I'm going to a funeral.
- 17:19Speaker 2: Got to walk in the park all day because I'm
- 17:21Speaker 2: all dressed up.
- 17:22Speaker 3: No place to go. Got to go walking in the park. Mama, Mama,
- 17:28Speaker 3: look at the funny man.
- 17:29Speaker 9: Look at the funny man's clothes.
- 17:33Speaker 3: Oh, cut it out, sis.
- 17:35Speaker 4: Here, you mustn't laugh at him, dear. He's earning his living.
- 17:39Speaker 2: How does he earn his living, Mama?
- 17:41Speaker 4: Why, his chest lights up with a sign, dear. That's
- 17:46Speaker 4: a lie.
- 17:46Speaker 3: My chest does not light up, madam. Mama, he's mad.
- 17:50Speaker 4: Come, dear. Don't pay any attention to him.
- 17:53Speaker 6: I think he's crazy.
- 17:56Speaker 3: Chest lights up with a sign.
- 17:58Speaker 4: Mama, he's mad.
- 18:01Speaker 3: Well, who wouldn't be mad? Walking around in a park
- 18:03Speaker 3: all dressed up like you're going to... What's the matter
- 18:05Speaker 3: with the world today?
- 18:07Speaker 2: I'll tell you what's the matter with the world today, gentlemen.
- 18:11Speaker 3: It's the idle rich, that's what.
- 18:13Speaker 2: The idle rich who walk around in high hats and
- 18:17Speaker 2: spats and long-tailed... Oh, well, look who's coming. Now, get
- 18:25Speaker 2: a load of that, gentlemen. Hey, you. You talking to me?
- 18:30Speaker 2: Certainly I'm talking to you.
- 18:33Speaker 3: Come here, buddy. Are you awake, man, buddy? Are you
- 18:37Speaker 3: awake today, buddy?
- 18:39Speaker 2: Well, no, not today. Not today, he said.
- 18:42Speaker 8: Not today, huh?
- 18:47Speaker 3: What day, then, buddy? Well, I just was out. No day.
- 18:50Speaker 2: That's what day is. Take a good look at him, folks.
- 18:54Speaker 3: The idle rich. Bloated with food. Reeking with champagne. Now, listen,
- 19:00Speaker 3: I never bloated with champagne. Who do you think you are, buddy?
- 19:03Speaker 2: Walking around here, flaunting your wealth in our face.
- 19:07Speaker 4: I'm not flaunting.
- 19:08Speaker 3: Come on, get back to your limousine.
- 19:10Speaker 7: This here park is for the common people, not for
- 19:13Speaker 7: the elites.
- 19:14Speaker 3: Now you wait a minute, my fine-feathered friend. You can't
- 19:17Speaker 3: talk to me like that. Folks, are we going to
- 19:19Speaker 3: stand for this? Get him out of here. He's a
- 19:22Speaker 3: blood on the lips.
- 19:23Speaker 7: No, sir.
- 19:24Speaker 3: Be it, mister. What for? I haven't done anything.
- 19:27Speaker 4: I got my rights.
- 19:28Speaker 3: Come on, folks. Give them the weight. Oh, cut it
- 19:30Speaker 3: out now. Cut it out. I mean it all. Get
- 19:34Speaker 3: the idle weight. Give them the weight. Are we going to.
- 19:38Speaker 4: Stand for this sort of thing? Give it to them, folks.
- 19:42Speaker 3: I think now I've got a pack of hoodlums after me. Police! Police! Help! Help! Police!
- 19:52Speaker 3: Right over here, sir. Right over here. Oh, officer, I'm
- 19:55Speaker 3: certainly glad to see you. I need your help, officer. Yes, sir, commissioner. Yes, sir.
- 19:59Speaker 3: I know all about it. And I'll get you there
- 20:01Speaker 3: right away, commissioner. Commissioner? Who's the commissioner? Just get right
- 20:05Speaker 3: on the motorcycle, commissioner. Now, wait a minute, officer.
- 20:07Speaker 2: I'm waiting for you, sir. The call went out a
- 20:09Speaker 2: half an hour ago. Be on the lookout for the
- 20:11Speaker 2: commissioner of parks.
- 20:12Speaker 3: He's late. Get on the handlebars, commissioner. Now, wait.
- 20:15Speaker 2: This has gone far enough, officer. Commissioner, do you want
- 20:17Speaker 2: me to lose my job? Now, please, please get on
- 20:20Speaker 2: the motorcycle. But where are you taking me?
- 20:21Speaker 3: To the dedication exercises of the new playground. That's where
- 20:24Speaker 3: you want to go, isn't it? What new playground? I
- 20:27Speaker 3: don't know anything about a new playground.
- 20:28Speaker 2: Well, you're supposed to be there, sir. They've been waiting
- 20:31Speaker 2: for you. They can't dedicate the playground without.
- 20:33Speaker 3: The commissioner of parks, you know.
- 20:34Speaker 2: Listen, I am not the commissioner.
- 20:36Speaker 3: Hang on, commissioner.
- 20:37Speaker 8: Take it easy.
- 20:38Speaker 3: Take it easy. Don't worry, commissioner. I'll have you there
- 20:41Speaker 3: in no time at all. You playground, ladies and gentlemen.
- 20:54Speaker 7: This monument to the youth of our city will stand
- 20:58Speaker 7: as a great reminder that the growing boys and girls
- 21:02Speaker 7: of today are the future voters of tomorrow. We must
- 21:07Speaker 7: remember that this playground is a.
- 21:09Speaker 3: Mrs.
- 21:09Speaker 2: McIntosh, are you sure the commissioner was notified to be here?
- 21:13Speaker 4: Of course he was.
- 21:14Speaker 6: My husband telephoned him this morning to remind him.
- 21:16Speaker 3: Well, is he always this late?
- 21:18Speaker 6: Well, how should I know?
- 21:19Speaker 4: I've never seen him in my life.
- 21:21Speaker 3: Nobody has.
- 21:22Speaker 2: But it was your husband who had him appointed, wasn't it?
- 21:24Speaker 4: Now, just a minute, Mr.
- 21:26Speaker 3: Thomas.
- 21:27Speaker 4: It was my husband that had you appointed, too. And
- 21:29Speaker 4: if you have any complaints, make them.
- 21:31Speaker 8: To him and not to me.
- 21:32Speaker 3: Well, I'm sorry, Mrs. McIntosh. Thomas, he's here. The commissioner
- 21:36Speaker 3: will get him up here. Well, here he is, Mr. Thomas. Now, listen, officer,
- 21:40Speaker 3: this is a terrible mistake. Commissioner, you're late. Have you
- 21:44Speaker 3: got your speech ready? Speech? What? speech. Well, then you'll
- 21:47Speaker 3: have to make it up as you go along. Ladies
- 21:49Speaker 3: and gentlemen, he has just arrived, the Commissioner Park. Go ahead, Commissioner.
- 21:57Speaker 3: I don't know. Go ahead. Well, all right then. Ladies
- 22:01Speaker 3: and gentlemen. Ladies and gentlemen.
- 22:03Speaker 4: Ladies and gentlemen.
- 22:05Speaker 3: Oh, listen, I'm not going to make a speech in
- 22:07Speaker 3: this rain, mister. Everybody's leaving anyway. All right, forget it. Uh,
- 22:11Speaker 3: just a minute, commissioner.
- 22:12Speaker 2: Can we get just one picture, please?
- 22:13Speaker 3: Look this way, commissioner. I wish somebody'd listen to me.
- 22:16Speaker 3: I'm not the commissioner. Oh, Mrs.
- 22:17Speaker 2: McIntosh, would you get in this, please?
- 22:19Speaker 3: Oh, of course. Right here? That's it. Get in the
- 22:21Speaker 3: swing there. Oh, commissioner, you give Mrs. McIntosh a push, commissioner.
- 22:25Speaker 3: But I'm not the... There we are. Thank you. Thanks, commissioner. Now, wait, wait.
- 22:29Speaker 3: My name is Todd. I'm Wilbur Todd. Is that one
- 22:32Speaker 3: D or two, sir? Todd. T-O-D-D.
- 22:36Speaker 4: That's my name.
- 22:37Speaker 3: Yes, sir. Thank you, Commissioner Todd. We'll get the name right.
- 22:40Speaker 3: Don't worry. So long, Commissioner. Inside.
- 22:43Speaker 8: Oh.
- 22:44Speaker 4: Just a second.
- 22:45Speaker 6: What did you say your name was?
- 22:47Speaker 3: Todd? Todd. With two Ds.
- 22:51Speaker 4: Then you're not Mr.
- 22:52Speaker 6: Roberts, the park commissioner?
- 22:54Speaker 3: Todd, lady, with two Ds.
- 22:57Speaker 6: Well, if you're not the commissioner, what are you doing here?
- 23:00Speaker 3: Well, that's what I'd like to know. I'm going home.
- 23:02Speaker 3: And I just dare anybody to stop me. I just
- 23:05Speaker 3: dare them, that's all. Good afternoon, Todd. Oh, why, Mr. Kirkwood. Yes,
- 23:11Speaker 3: very strange I should happen to be at this dedication,
- 23:14Speaker 3: isn't it? Yes, sir.
- 23:16Speaker 2: I mean.
- 23:16Speaker 3: And it's also very strange that you should be here, Todd. Mr.
- 23:19Speaker 2: Kirkwood, I can explain it.
- 23:21Speaker 3: I can explain everything. I'm sure you can. For shame, Todd. Why, Mr. Kirkwood...
- 23:26Speaker 3: If you wanted a day off, why didn't you ask?
- 23:29Speaker 3: but to use the death of a dear relation as
- 23:32Speaker 3: an excuse to... Oh, for shame. But my dear relation
- 23:37Speaker 3: didn't die, Mr. Kirkwood. Then you lied. Yes, sir. No, sir.
- 23:40Speaker 2: If there's one thing I can't abide, it's a fibber.
- 23:43Speaker 3: Todd, you're fired. Oh, sure.
- 24:00Speaker 2: In just a moment, Pippa McGee and Molly will return
- 24:03Speaker 2: in Act Two of Mama Loves Papa.
- 24:06Speaker 9: One of the real problems of family abuse is that
- 24:09Speaker 9: the ones who need help the most are the most
- 24:11Speaker 9: afraid to get it. I'm talking about the abusers. They're
- 24:15Speaker 9: afraid if they go for help, their children will be
- 24:18Speaker 9: taken away from them. Let me tell you something. Help
- 24:22Speaker 9: is designed to keep families together. It's doing nothing about
- 24:26Speaker 9: the abuse that tears families apart. They're also afraid careers
- 24:31Speaker 9: will be ruined. In fact, that's not the case. It's
- 24:34Speaker 9: those who continue abusing that risk everything. The military goes
- 24:39Speaker 9: to great lengths to help people solve their family abuse problems.
- 24:43Speaker 9: Each medical treatment facility has its own family advocacy representative,
- 24:48Speaker 9: backed by a team of doctors, lawyers, nurses, social workers,
- 24:51Speaker 9: and psychiatrists. They work together to arrange the best program
- 24:56Speaker 9: to deal with each individual problem. They're more than help.
- 25:00Speaker 9: They're a whole new chance. If you or someone you
- 25:04Speaker 9: know has an abuse problem, contact the family advocacy representative
- 25:08Speaker 9: at your medical treatment facility. And now, your host returns
- 25:13Speaker 9: to the microphone.
- 25:14Speaker 3: Act II of Mama Loves Papa, starring Fibber McGee as
- 25:18Speaker 3: Wilbur Todd and Molly as Jessie Todd.
- 25:33Speaker 2: Bright and early the following morning, the newspapers appear on
- 25:36Speaker 2: the streets of Glenville. On page one, under the title
- 25:40Speaker 2: Upsy Daisy, is a photograph of one Wilbur Todd, attired
- 25:45Speaker 2: in silk hat and spats, engaged in pushing a swing.
- 25:50Speaker 2: On the swing is pictured Mrs. Franklin Avery McIntosh. The
- 25:55Speaker 2: photograph and the story make very interesting reading, especially for Mr.
- 26:00Speaker 3: McIntosh. Up the daisy. Park Commissioner Wilbur Todd makes merry
- 26:06Speaker 3: with Mrs. Franklin Avery McIntosh at opening of new playground. Mr.
- 26:12Speaker 3: Wilbur Todd, unknown before yesterday afternoon, popped up suddenly as
- 26:16Speaker 3: our new commissioner of public parks. Who is this rabbit, anyway?
- 26:20Speaker 3: I never saw him before. Now, don't get all excited.
- 26:23Speaker 4: His name is Todd.
- 26:24Speaker 3: Yes, yes, I can see that. But who is he?
- 26:26Speaker 3: Who is he? Where was Roberts?
- 26:28Speaker 6: Your very obedient commissioner Roberts, darling, never showed up.
- 26:31Speaker 3: Oh, he didn't show up, huh? No word, no excuse.
- 26:34Speaker 6: And suddenly, there was Todd.
- 26:37Speaker 3: Just popped out of nowhere to give you a push
- 26:39Speaker 3: in the swing, huh?
- 26:40Speaker 4: Oh, don't be ridiculous.
- 26:42Speaker 6: I hope you're not going to be jealous of a
- 26:44Speaker 6: simpleton like that.
- 26:45Speaker 3: Jealous? Now listen, Gladys, there's more than jealousy involved here.
- 26:49Speaker 3: Don't you realize what this story does?
- 26:51Speaker 7: No, I don't.
- 26:52Speaker 3: All right, then let me explain. Do you know those
- 26:55Speaker 3: pretty gowns and fur coats that you're so fond of?
- 26:57Speaker 3: Do you know how I get them, my sweet? I
- 27:00Speaker 3: sell furniture and playground equipment to our fair city. And
- 27:03Speaker 3: the only reason I can tell to our fair city
- 27:05Speaker 3: is that I have enough influence at the city hall
- 27:07Speaker 3: to appoint my own commissioner. Oh, shut up! Shut up,
- 27:10Speaker 3: shut up. That's all you can say.
- 27:11Speaker 4: Talk to me as if I was a child.
- 27:12Speaker 3: Well, maybe you are.
- 27:13Speaker 6: If you're such a wizard at politics, why don't you
- 27:15Speaker 6: appoint a commissioner with brains?
- 27:16Speaker 3: Because I don't want anybody with brains. Brains are a
- 27:19Speaker 3: drug on the market. What I want is a moron.
- 27:22Speaker 6: Well, you've certainly got one in Robert.
- 27:24Speaker 3: Oh, Robert. Robert is through. I couldn't keep him in
- 27:26Speaker 3: the job now if I wanted to. Not after this, miss.
- 27:29Speaker 6: Well, then, appoint a new one.
- 27:31Speaker 3: Sure, sure, appoint a new one. Just like that. Well,
- 27:34Speaker 3: the newspapers have done that for me. Wilbur Todd, our
- 27:37Speaker 3: new commissioner of public parts. Wilbur Todd makes merry with Mrs.
- 27:41Speaker 3: Franklin Avery... Avery. Hey, wait a minute. Gladys, this Todd person,
- 27:47Speaker 3: what was he like?
- 27:48Speaker 6: I told you. He looked like a radio comedian.
- 27:51Speaker 3: A dyed-in-the-wool dope. Yes, yes, yes. But what does he do?
- 27:56Speaker 6: Well, from what I could understand from the guy who
- 27:58Speaker 6: was bawling him out, he's now unemployed.
- 28:01Speaker 3: Oh, he is, huh? Well, well. Hello? And a reed?
- 28:08Speaker 3: Get me the city hall.
- 28:16Speaker 4: Upsy-daisy.
- 28:18Speaker 5: Commissioner Wilbert Todd makes Mary with Mrs. Franklin Avery McIntosh
- 28:23Speaker 5: at opening.
- 28:24Speaker 3: Oh, Mama, stop it, will you?
- 28:26Speaker 5: You've read that thing 20 times. And I'm still trying
- 28:28Speaker 5: to understand it. And I'm still trying to understand why
- 28:31Speaker 5: you're not going to work this morning.
- 28:33Speaker 3: I told you, Mama. I... I was fired. Why? Look, Mama,
- 28:39Speaker 3: it all started yesterday morning when I... Well, when I
- 28:43Speaker 3: left the office to go to the funeral. Whose funeral? Well,
- 28:48Speaker 3: your uncle's funeral.
- 28:51Speaker 4: My uncle's funeral?
- 28:52Speaker 5: That man never had a sick day in his life,
- 28:54Speaker 5: and yesterday you went to his funeral.
- 28:57Speaker 3: But I didn't go.
- 28:58Speaker 4: Well, how could you if he isn't dead?
- 29:01Speaker 3: Oh, Mama, let's start all over again. You got me
- 29:04Speaker 3: all dressed up yesterday morning.
- 29:06Speaker 4: Not to go to a funeral.
- 29:08Speaker 3: That's what you think.
- 29:09Speaker 5: I never mentioned my uncle, not a word. Did I
- 29:13Speaker 5: tell you my uncle was dead?
- 29:14Speaker 4: Did I?
- 29:15Speaker 3: No, Mama.
- 29:17Speaker 4: Well, heavenly days, who did tell you?
- 29:20Speaker 3: The boss. The boss.
- 29:22Speaker 4: The boss told you that my uncle was dead.
- 29:25Speaker 3: Oh, Mama, skip it, skip it. Nobody died. I didn't
- 29:28Speaker 3: go to a funeral. I went out in the park
- 29:31Speaker 3: to take a walk.
- 29:33Speaker 4: Now we're getting someplace.
- 29:34Speaker 2: Go on.
- 29:35Speaker 3: And the next thing you know, that woman said my
- 29:37Speaker 3: chest lit up. Ah.
- 29:40Speaker 4: Chest lit up.
- 29:41Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
- 29:42Speaker 4: Go on, Wilbur.
- 29:43Speaker 2: Well, then there was that other fellow I had to
- 29:46Speaker 2: run away from because he told everybody I was loaded
- 29:49Speaker 2: with food and drinking with champagne.
- 29:51Speaker 4: Ah, champagne.
- 29:53Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 29:54Speaker 3: Then when the cop put me on the handlebars, well,
- 29:57Speaker 3: I didn't know what to say.
- 29:58Speaker 8: Mm-hmm.
- 30:00Speaker 4: Wilbur, it's all very plain.
- 30:02Speaker 3: Well, that's good.
- 30:04Speaker 5: I got you all dressed up yesterday to try to
- 30:06Speaker 5: make a success out of you. And you went out
- 30:09Speaker 5: and got drunk. Mama, I didn't get drunk.
- 30:16Speaker 3: I didn't.
- 30:16Speaker 4: Oh, it's no use, Wilbur. I can smell it on
- 30:19Speaker 4: you right now.
- 30:21Speaker 3: Mama, how can I prove it to you? Tell me how, Mama.
- 30:25Speaker 5: I'm sorry, Wilbur, but you're a great disappointment to me.
- 30:28Speaker 3: There's the door.
- 30:29Speaker 2: I'll answer it, Mama.
- 30:30Speaker 4: No, don't try to get up. I'll do it myself.
- 30:32Speaker 3: Huh?
- 30:33Speaker 4: You'd probably fall flat on your face.
- 30:37Speaker 3: What is it, please? Good morning. Mr. Todd here.
- 30:40Speaker 4: Yes, he is. Who wants him?
- 30:42Speaker 3: Well, we're from the city hall.
- 30:43Speaker 4: The city hall.
- 30:45Speaker 3: Come right in, gentlemen.
- 30:47Speaker 5: Wilbur!
- 30:48Speaker 4: Wilbur, the city hall is here.
- 30:50Speaker 3: There you are, ma'am. There. I guess this will prove
- 30:54Speaker 3: it to you. They want me for impersonating a commissioner.
- 30:57Speaker 7: Mr.
- 30:57Speaker 3: Todd. All right, bud. I'll go quietly.
- 31:00Speaker 4: Oh, Wilbur.
- 31:02Speaker 3: Just a moment, Mr.
- 31:03Speaker 7: Todd.
- 31:04Speaker 3: I have a little paper here... Ah, yes. Know all
- 31:08Speaker 3: men by these presents. Now, that won't be necessary. Just
- 31:12Speaker 3: don't put the cuffs on me, that's all. Oh, Winford.
- 31:17Speaker 3: One moment, please. By these presents that by the power
- 31:21Speaker 3: invested in me with the people of Glenville, I do
- 31:23Speaker 3: hereby decree, as of this date written, that Wilbur Todd
- 31:26Speaker 3: be appointed Commissioner of Public Park.
- 31:29Speaker 4: Commissioner of.
- 31:30Speaker 3: Mama! No, of Public Park.
- 31:32Speaker 4: Oh, Wilbur, a public man.
- 31:35Speaker 3: Congratulations, Mr.
- 31:36Speaker 7: Todd.
- 31:37Speaker 3: Mama, what you said about me falling on my... Yes, Wilbur?
- 31:42Speaker 3: It looks like you were right. Well.
- 31:53Speaker 3: Step right in the office, Mr. Todd. Boys, boys. I
- 31:59Speaker 3: want you to meet our new commissioner. Commissioner Todd, the boy. Hi, boys.
- 32:04Speaker 3: How do you do? How do you do? Have a cigar, commissioner. Well, thanks,
- 32:08Speaker 3: but I don't... Oh, go on. Take two. And here's
- 32:11Speaker 3: our good friend Frank McIntosh, the man that you and
- 32:14Speaker 3: the city have to thank for your appointment. How are you, commissioner? Hi, bud.
- 32:19Speaker 3: I hope I'll be able to justify the faith you've
- 32:21Speaker 3: placed in me. Why, of course you will. Well, boys,
- 32:26Speaker 3: suppose we run along. Oh, wait. Don't let me put
- 32:29Speaker 3: you out of your office. My office? Commissioner, this is
- 32:33Speaker 3: your office.
- 32:34Speaker 2: It is?
- 32:34Speaker 3: Gee. Leather chairs and everything. Well, say, I.
- 32:39Speaker 2: Well, look, anytime any of you fellas want to use.
- 32:42Speaker 3: A phone, just come in here. I seem to have
- 32:46Speaker 3: three of them. So long, Commissioner. Well, Todd, how are
- 32:54Speaker 3: you going to like public life? Well, I... I don't
- 32:57Speaker 3: know what to say about all this. I've never been
- 32:59Speaker 3: a big shot before. You'll get used to it. Oh,
- 33:03Speaker 3: have a cigar? Well, thanks, but I... Oh, go ahead.
- 33:05Speaker 3: Go ahead. Well, Todd, if you're the smart man I
- 33:09Speaker 3: think you are, you'll go far down here. I'll see
- 33:12Speaker 3: to that. You know, you look like a man interested
- 33:14Speaker 3: in little kiddies. Oh, yes, yes, I am. I'm very
- 33:18Speaker 3: fond of kiddies. They're so, so full of youth, I guess. Well,
- 33:26Speaker 3: I'm fond of them myself. Like to see them get
- 33:28Speaker 3: lots of fresh air, lots of play. You know, build
- 33:31Speaker 3: young America. Yes, indeed. You see, I manufacture playground equipment. Oh,
- 33:35Speaker 3: is that so? Yes, been filling the city's orders for years. Oh,
- 33:38Speaker 3: by the way, did you know Robert? Robert? Yes, he
- 33:41Speaker 3: had this job before you, but he bought equipment from
- 33:44Speaker 3: another company. He got it cheaper, but the stuff's no good. Now,
- 33:47Speaker 3: my price is high, but so is my quality. You understand? Oh,
- 33:51Speaker 3: high quality. Sure, sure. I understand, Mr.
- 33:55Speaker 2: McIntosh.
- 33:56Speaker 3: Be frank.
- 33:58Speaker 2: Okay, Frank.
- 33:59Speaker 3: My name's Wilbur. Call me Todd. Ha ha! Well, Todd,
- 34:06Speaker 3: anytime I can be of any help to you, just
- 34:08Speaker 3: call on me. Oh, by the way, here's a little
- 34:12Speaker 3: paper you might sign. An order for some new equipment.
- 34:15Speaker 3: Nothing important, just a few thousand dollars. Oh, a few thousand, eh?
- 34:19Speaker 3: Sounds reasonable. I'll look it over. You'll look it over. Oh, yes. Yes,
- 34:26Speaker 3: of course. Well, so long, Todd. So long, Frank. I
- 34:29Speaker 3: don't know how to thank you for all this. Thank Mrs. McIntosh.
- 34:32Speaker 3: She's the one. Mrs.
- 34:34Speaker 2: McIntosh?
- 34:34Speaker 3: Yes. She says you sure push a mean swing.
- 34:38Speaker 2: Oh, gosh. Say, that was funny, wasn't it?
- 34:40Speaker 7: Yes.
- 34:43Speaker 3: Oh, by the way, are you married, Todd? Yes, sir,
- 34:45Speaker 3: I certainly am. To the sweetest little woman in the world. Fine. Well,
- 34:49Speaker 3: why don't you two come over to my place this weekend?
- 34:51Speaker 3: We've got some people coming, the right people. You know,
- 34:54Speaker 3: nothing like meeting the right people. Oh, that'd be wonderful. Good,
- 34:57Speaker 3: we'll look for you. Well, so long, Todd. So long, Frank.
- 35:00Speaker 9: Oh, wait.
- 35:01Speaker 3: Yeah? Have a cigar. Hello? Hello, is this you, Mama? Listen, Mama,
- 35:13Speaker 3: I don't think I'll be able to get home for
- 35:15Speaker 3: dinner tonight.
- 35:16Speaker 2: Do you mind?
- 35:18Speaker 3: I got to see the boys about something. I'm awfully sorry, Mama.
- 35:23Speaker 9: Hello?
- 35:23Speaker 3: Is this you, Mama? Well, this is Wilbur. Won't be
- 35:26Speaker 3: able to make it for dinner tonight, Mom. I got
- 35:27Speaker 3: to see the mayor. Pretty important. Don't wait up.
- 35:35Speaker 4: Oh, yes, I know. You've got to see the governor
- 35:38Speaker 4: this time, I suppose. Oh, all right, Wilbur. No, I'm
- 35:43Speaker 4: not mad.
- 35:43Speaker 3: I'm just.
- 35:45Speaker 4: All right, Wilbur.
- 35:46Speaker 3: Goodbye.
- 35:53Speaker 2: There you are, Mama.
- 35:55Speaker 3: The West Side Playground. And it's all mine.
- 35:58Speaker 4: I always had an idea it belonged to the city.
- 36:01Speaker 3: Oh, well, you know what I mean. Me being the
- 36:04Speaker 3: commissioner and all, it's like a dream, isn't it?
- 36:07Speaker 4: Well, it has its point.
- 36:09Speaker 5: It's nice you being a public official and all and plenty.
- 36:12Speaker 3: Of money for a change.
- 36:14Speaker 2: You mean plenty of money instead of change.
- 36:18Speaker 3: How am I doing, Mama? You're improving, Wilbur.
- 36:22Speaker 2: Slow but sure.
- 36:23Speaker 3: All right, son.
- 36:24Speaker 2: All right.
- 36:25Speaker 3: We'll send you home and have it fixed. It hurts.
- 36:29Speaker 4: It hurts.
- 36:30Speaker 2: Hey, something must have happened.
- 36:32Speaker 4: Oh, that little lad has a cut knee.
- 36:33Speaker 3: No, no, no. Go ahead, Johnny. You take him home,
- 36:36Speaker 3: will you?
- 36:37Speaker 4: Oh, attendant.
- 36:38Speaker 3: Attendant. Oh, good morning, Commissioner.
- 36:41Speaker 2: Something happen to that kid?
- 36:42Speaker 3: Oh, yes, sir. A seesaw broke and cut his leg open.
- 36:45Speaker 2: Oh, say, that's bad. Does that kind of thing happen often? Well,
- 36:49Speaker 2: not here, but over in East Park last month, there
- 36:52Speaker 2: were four accidents, one pretty serious. It's faulty material, Commissioner. Oh, no, no, no,
- 36:58Speaker 2: that's impossible.
- 36:59Speaker 3: Why, his stuff has quality.
- 37:01Speaker 2: He said so himself. Well, it might have had quality once, sir,
- 37:05Speaker 2: but it's getting awful old.
- 37:07Speaker 3: Well, good morning, sir. Mama. Who is she? Oh....
- 37:40Speaker 6: If you can call it that. Well, don't laugh, but
- 37:43Speaker 6: that's the park commissioner's wife.
- 37:46Speaker 3: No. Careful.
- 37:47Speaker 5: Excuse me, but have you seen my husband?
- 37:51Speaker 4: No, I'm afraid I haven't. Come on, Janet.
- 37:54Speaker 3: Nice friendly people around here.
- 37:58Speaker 4: Oh, I beg your pardon, madam.
- 38:00Speaker 3: Yes?
- 38:01Speaker 4: I'm looking for my husband.
- 38:03Speaker 3: Well, I'm sure.
- 38:04Speaker 4: I'm not hiding him.
- 38:05Speaker 3: Isn't it wonderful.
- 38:07Speaker 4: How men can hide away and talk business all night? Yes,
- 38:11Speaker 4: isn't it?
- 38:11Speaker 5: Of course, I guess my husband's pretty busy with Mr.
- 38:14Speaker 2: McIntosh.
- 38:15Speaker 4: My husband's a public official. Hmm, how interesting. What does
- 38:19Speaker 4: your husband do?
- 38:21Speaker 3: Oh? He's still governor of the state. Good night.
- 38:26Speaker 4: Good night.
- 38:32Speaker 3: Gladys. Gladys. Well? Come over here. Listen, I'm having trouble
- 38:37Speaker 3: with that Todd person. Again? Yes, he's been asking a
- 38:39Speaker 3: lot of fool questions about the equipment we delivered months ago,
- 38:43Speaker 3: and I don't like it. And he's got an order
- 38:45Speaker 3: in his pocket he's been carrying around ever since I
- 38:46Speaker 3: had him appointed. Now, I want that order signed. Tonight. Oh,
- 38:50Speaker 3: what's the big rush?
- 38:51Speaker 2: Oh.
- 38:51Speaker 3: Oh, darling, do as I say. Get him to sign
- 38:54Speaker 3: that thing and I'll have him where I want him.
- 38:56Speaker 3: He won't be able to open his mouth then. Well,
- 38:58Speaker 3: what am I, a magician?
- 38:59Speaker 6: How can I make him sign anything?
- 39:01Speaker 3: Gladys, please, for the sake of that new bracelet you've
- 39:05Speaker 3: been asking for.
- 39:06Speaker 4: Oh, all right.
- 39:07Speaker 3: Well, thank heaven. Oh, there he is. Go ahead and
- 39:09Speaker 3: good luck.
- 39:11Speaker 2: Oh, Mr.
- 39:11Speaker 3: Todd.
- 39:13Speaker 7: Mr. Todd.
- 39:13Speaker 3: Good evening, Mrs. McIntosh. All alone, Mr. Todd? No, I'm
- 39:18Speaker 3: just looking for Mama. I mean, my wife.
- 39:20Speaker 6: Oh, I'm sure she's all right. Come and have some champagne.
- 39:24Speaker 2: Champagne?
- 39:25Speaker 3: Oh, I don't usually indulge in.
- 39:27Speaker 6: Oh, but you will with me, won't you?
- 39:30Speaker 3: Well, I... I guess. Well... Come.
- 39:33Speaker 7: On, Mr.
- 39:34Speaker 3: Todd.
- 39:34Speaker 6: We'll find a nice quiet spot all by ourselves.
- 39:45Speaker 5: Excuse me, has anybody seen my husband?
- 39:49Speaker 4: I'm looking for Commissioner Todd. Have you seen my husband?
- 39:54Speaker 5: Has anybody seen my husband?
- 40:02Speaker 1: Go on, Mr.
- 40:03Speaker 4: Todd, tell some more.
- 40:05Speaker 2: No, no more, no more.
- 40:08Speaker 3: Oh, it's awful good. It certainly is, isn't it? But
- 40:13Speaker 3: it's no more.
- 40:14Speaker 6: Then what about that paper thing?
- 40:19Speaker 3: You know. Paper thing?
- 40:22Speaker 6: Oh, you know, the thing you were going to sign.
- 40:25Speaker 3: Oh, the thing I was, oh. Let's talk some more
- 40:29Speaker 3: about that. Oh, no, no, no. No more talk, Mrs.
- 40:36Speaker 4: McIntosh? Oh, call me Gladys.
- 40:39Speaker 3: Call me Todd. Todd! What?
- 40:44Speaker 6: Oh, that's a cute name.
- 40:46Speaker 3: Yeah. Hey, I'm getting sleepy. How do you spell it?
- 40:52Speaker 4: Sleepy?
- 40:53Speaker 3: No, Todd. How do you spell it?
- 40:55Speaker 7: Oh.
- 40:56Speaker 3: It's T-O-D.
- 41:02Speaker 6: Write it down and let me see.
- 41:06Speaker 2: No pen.
- 41:06Speaker 4: Well, I got one.
- 41:08Speaker 3: Here. No paper.
- 41:11Speaker 2: Oh.
- 41:12Speaker 6: Maybe you got some in your pocket.
- 41:14Speaker 3: Pocket? Oh, yeah. What's that? Paper.
- 41:20Speaker 6: Now write. Spell out your name and let me see.
- 41:23Speaker 3: Huh? Where? Right there. Down there.
- 41:28Speaker 7: Okay.
- 41:30Speaker 2: Won a medal for thermoship once.
- 41:32Speaker 3: No. Sure. Palmer Method.
- 41:36Speaker 7: Oh.
- 41:38Speaker 2: Watch this.
- 41:39Speaker 3: I got curlicues on the end.
- 41:41Speaker 8: W-I-L-D-U-R.
- 41:42Speaker 3: Curlicues. Curlicues. Capital T-O-D-D. Thank you. How's that? Oh, Todd,
- 42:05Speaker 3: it's beautiful.
- 42:06Speaker 6: Can I keep it?
- 42:07Speaker 3: Sure.
- 42:09Speaker 2: Hey, you know what?
- 42:09Speaker 3: I'm sleepy. Oh.
- 42:19Speaker 4: Excuse me, I didn't... Oh.
- 42:21Speaker 3: Oh, come in, Mrs.
- 42:23Speaker 4: Todd.
- 42:24Speaker 3: I'm afraid your husband is rather tired.
- 42:27Speaker 4: Yes, he certainly looks it.
- 42:28Speaker 6: He's a charming man.
- 42:31Speaker 4: You ought to take better care of him.
- 42:33Speaker 8: Oh, Mama.
- 42:44Speaker 3: Oh, Mama, my head.
- 42:46Speaker 4: Put this ice bag on.
- 42:47Speaker 7: Oh, oh, oh.
- 42:50Speaker 2: What time is it?
- 42:51Speaker 4: Three o'clock in the morning.
- 42:53Speaker 3: Three o'clock? How'd we get home?
- 42:55Speaker 4: We didn't hitchhike.
- 42:56Speaker 3: I wouldn't know. I could only remember what happened. Isn't
- 43:03Speaker 3: it terrible, Mama?
- 43:05Speaker 2: I can't remember.
- 43:05Speaker 4: Oh, it doesn't matter. Nothing matters anymore.
- 43:09Speaker 3: What do you mean by that?
- 43:10Speaker 4: It's not your fault, Wilbur. It's mine. I just don't
- 43:13Speaker 4: fit into your high sphere.
- 43:14Speaker 2: What are you talking about, Mama?
- 43:16Speaker 3: Oh, well, Dr.
- 43:17Speaker 5: Payne says that a wife has got to be a
- 43:19Speaker 5: help to her husband. If she isn't that, then she
- 43:21Speaker 5: isn't anything. I thought I was doing such a wonderful
- 43:24Speaker 5: thing when I tried to make you over. Well, I've
- 43:27Speaker 5: made you over and I've put you out of my class.
- 43:30Speaker 5: I can't help you now, Wilbur, so I'm just getting out.
- 43:34Speaker 3: Oh, no. You can't.
- 43:36Speaker 2: You can't do that.
- 43:37Speaker 4: I won't make any fuss or scandal. I'll just leave.
- 43:40Speaker 3: Oh, but Mama.
- 43:41Speaker 4: Then you can go on and be a success without
- 43:43Speaker 4: me hampering you.
- 43:44Speaker 2: But Mama, I wouldn't know what to do without you
- 43:47Speaker 2: hampering me, Mama.
- 43:49Speaker 4: I'm sorry, Wilbur. My mind's made up and you know
- 43:52Speaker 4: me when I make up my mind. Does your head
- 43:56Speaker 4: feel any better, dearie?
- 43:58Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 43:59Speaker 4: It'll be all right in the morning. Good night, Wilbur.
- 44:03Speaker 3: All right.
- 44:20Speaker 2: In just a few moments, our stars, Pippa McGee and Molly,
- 44:23Speaker 2: will return in Act 3 of Mama Loves Papa. Be someone,
- 44:28Speaker 2: be someone special.
- 44:31Speaker 4: It's time for you to choose.
- 44:33Speaker 3: The college right for you.
- 44:36Speaker 7: To help you do the best that you can do.
- 44:41Speaker 3: Mama!
- 44:43Speaker 10: For a free booklet about small colleges, write to Council
- 44:50Speaker 10: of Independent Colleges, 11501 Washington.
- 44:54Speaker 3: D.C., 2008.
- 44:58Speaker 9: The next time you get a letter, a package, or
- 45:00Speaker 9: your favorite magazine in the mail, stop and consider for
- 45:03Speaker 9: a moment how far it had to travel and how
- 45:05Speaker 9: many people were involved in the process. Your military postal service,
- 45:10Speaker 9: in cooperation with the U.S. Postal Service, moves mail from
- 45:13Speaker 9: the United States all over the world, serving the four
- 45:16Speaker 9: branches of the armed forces in over 70 countries, guiding
- 45:20Speaker 9: your mail through the most economical and efficient system possible.
- 45:24Speaker 9: No matter how far your mail travels, it costs the
- 45:27Speaker 9: same as domestic U.S.
- 45:28Speaker 3: Postal rates.
- 45:29Speaker 9: Your mail is transported in the most expeditious means possible,
- 45:33Speaker 9: including ship, commercial and military airlift, train, truck, helicopter, and jeep.
- 45:38Speaker 9: If you have good ideas on how to move it,
- 45:40Speaker 9: route it, or process it faster, the Military Postal Service
- 45:44Speaker 9: wants to hear your suggestion because it's your mail. The
- 45:47Speaker 9: people in the Military Postal Service know their job is
- 45:50Speaker 9: important because they know your mail is important to you
- 45:53Speaker 9: wherever you are stationed. The Military Postal Service, bringing the
- 45:58Speaker 9: whole world closer to you.
- 46:28Speaker 3: And now, your host, Frank Brzee, returns to the microphone.
- 46:32Speaker 3: Act Three of Mama Loves Papa, starring Fever McGee and Molly.
- 46:44Speaker 2: It's said that troubles never come singly, but in series
- 46:47Speaker 2: of three, Wilbur Todd has become involved with Mr. McIntosh,
- 46:51Speaker 2: number one. His good wife, Jessie, is on the verge
- 46:54Speaker 2: of leaving him, number two. And now to the mayor's
- 46:58Speaker 2: office comes misfortune number three in the person of the
- 47:02Speaker 2: Citizens Committee.
- 47:04Speaker 3: I tell you, Mr.
- 47:04Speaker 2: Mayor, the graft in this city must end. We have
- 47:07Speaker 2: the press behind us, the voters, and the majority of
- 47:09Speaker 2: our public officials.
- 47:10Speaker 3: But nothing can be done unless we attack the evil
- 47:13Speaker 3: at its source, a mere handful of grasping politicians who
- 47:17Speaker 3: have a stranglehold on our city's finances. Gentlemen, gentlemen, please.
- 47:22Speaker 2: I needn't tell you that you have my whole heart
- 47:24Speaker 2: at support. But you can't expect me to take action
- 47:27Speaker 2: on every city official in the hopes of punishing the
- 47:29Speaker 2: few guilty ones.
- 47:31Speaker 3: I must have names. Mr.
- 47:32Speaker 2: Mayor, we have the names. Just look at this list.
- 47:35Speaker 2: At the top stands Mr. Franklin McIntosh. And here below
- 47:38Speaker 2: are the men in his pay. Men he's had appointed
- 47:41Speaker 2: to influential positions in order to milk the budget down
- 47:44Speaker 2: to the last dollar.
- 47:45Speaker 3: Mr.
- 47:45Speaker 2: Mayor, this committee demands the immediate arrest of every person
- 47:49Speaker 2: on this list. Gentlemen, we'll take action at once.
- 48:03Speaker 3: Won't you think it over?
- 48:05Speaker 2: Please, Mama, you can't walk out on me like this.
- 48:07Speaker 5: What's the use of talking, Wilbur? We went all over
- 48:10Speaker 5: this last night.
- 48:11Speaker 3: Look, Mama, I'll give up my job as commissioner. I'll
- 48:14Speaker 3: find something else. I never wanted to be a big
- 48:16Speaker 3: shot anyway.
- 48:17Speaker 4: You can't do that. I won't let you.
- 48:19Speaker 5: I always knew you had it in you, Wilbur. It
- 48:22Speaker 5: just took a little coaxing to bring it out, that's all.
- 48:25Speaker 5: And someday, Wilbur, you're going to be a big man
- 48:27Speaker 5: in this town. I can feel it coming now, and
- 48:30Speaker 5: I'm not going to interfere.
- 48:32Speaker 4: Hand me that grip, dearie.
- 48:34Speaker 3: Mama, you wouldn't interfere. You could be a big woman.
- 48:38Speaker 5: No, no, not me. I'd only hold you back. And
- 48:42Speaker 5: I want you to get everything that's coming to you.
- 48:45Speaker 4: I'll get it.
- 48:47Speaker 3: Yes?
- 48:48Speaker 2: Good morning. We're from the city hall.
- 48:51Speaker 4: Come in, please.
- 48:52Speaker 7: Thanks.
- 48:53Speaker 4: Wilbur, they're from the city hall.
- 48:55Speaker 2: Oh, I can't bother with that now. I'm not coming
- 48:57Speaker 2: down this morning, boys.
- 48:59Speaker 3: Oh, no? No. Well, I'm sorry, Mr. Todd.
- 49:02Speaker 2: Well, so am I.
- 49:03Speaker 3: Just let me alone, boys. I'm in trouble. Well, he
- 49:05Speaker 3: says he's in trouble, Joe. Yeah.
- 49:08Speaker 2: Yeah, and I'll beat it, boys.
- 49:09Speaker 3: Scram. Sure, sure.
- 49:11Speaker 2: You better get the cuffs, Joe.
- 49:12Speaker 3: All set. Hey, what do you mean, cuffs? What is this? Oh,
- 49:15Speaker 3: it's very simple, Mr.
- 49:16Speaker 2: Todd.
- 49:17Speaker 3: You're under arrest. Arrest?
- 49:19Speaker 4: Wilbur. what have you done?
- 49:21Speaker 3: Got a Mac?
- 49:21Speaker 2: Hey, let me alone.
- 49:22Speaker 3: Come on, Todd. Oh, Wilbur. Oh, Wilbur. Listen, what is this?
- 49:30Speaker 3: I haven't done anything. Of course not. Of course not. Oh, Mama,
- 49:33Speaker 3: don't cry. This is a mistake, that's all.
- 49:35Speaker 4: Oh, Wilbur.
- 49:38Speaker 3: They can't put me in jail. They can't do it, Mama.
- 49:41Speaker 3: They don't dare put me in jail.
- 49:44Speaker 4: Let me out of here! Let me out of here!
- 49:51Speaker 4: Shut up down there! Let me out of here!
- 49:54Speaker 3: You can't do this to me! If I got right,
- 49:56Speaker 3: I'll have the law on you! Ah, shut up! Pipe down! Okay, Sid,
- 50:00Speaker 3: here's your man. Hello, Commissioner. Who are you? Sid, the name.
- 50:04Speaker 3: Just call me Sid. Open up here, officer. What do
- 50:09Speaker 3: you want? I come down to get you out. You're
- 50:12Speaker 3: a free man, Commissioner.
- 50:13Speaker 4: Oh, I am, huh?
- 50:14Speaker 3: Why, sure.
- 50:16Speaker 2: You don't think Mr. McIntosh will let you stay in jail. No, sir.
- 50:22Speaker 3: I got a writ for you. Oh, boy. That's quick work.
- 50:26Speaker 2: Hey, when you're one of the boys, it's always quick work.
- 50:30Speaker 3: Come on, Commissioner.
- 50:31Speaker 9: Mr.
- 50:32Speaker 2: McIntosh wants to see you.
- 50:33Speaker 3: Oh, he does, eh? Well, that's fine, because I want
- 50:35Speaker 3: to see Mr.
- 50:36Speaker 2: McIntosh.
- 50:49Speaker 3: Well, well, gentlemen. No casualties, I hope? Area one, Mr. McIntosh.
- 50:55Speaker 3: Just a little mistake, boys, that's all. The Citizens Committee
- 50:58Speaker 3: got a little overambitious. These things happen every once in
- 51:03Speaker 3: a while, but it'll all blow over. As long as
- 51:06Speaker 3: we all stick together, gentlemen, they can't prove a thing. No, sir.
- 51:09Speaker 3: Here's the last one, Mr. McIntosh. The commission self. Well,
- 51:14Speaker 3: come in, Todd. Come in. I'm glad to see you.
- 51:17Speaker 2: I want to speak to you, Mr. McIntosh.
- 51:19Speaker 3: Sure, sure. Have a cigar? I don't smoke. Listen, do
- 51:22Speaker 3: you know where I was? I was just in jail. No. Well,
- 51:26Speaker 3: that happens to the best of us, Todd. It happened
- 51:29Speaker 3: to most of us this morning. Sure, but here we
- 51:33Speaker 3: all are. Oh, have a drink? I don't drink either,
- 51:36Speaker 3: and I want to know what this is all about. Now, look, Todd,
- 51:38Speaker 3: you're a big boy now. There isn't really any Santa Claus,
- 51:41Speaker 3: you know, except me. I've been Saint Nick to the
- 51:45Speaker 3: boys here for a long time. Oh, I get it. Why,
- 51:51Speaker 3: you're nothing but a bunch of crooks. Now, you take
- 51:53Speaker 3: it easy, Todd. You got me this commissioner's job so
- 51:55Speaker 3: you could put over some more funny deals. What are
- 51:57Speaker 3: you talking about, more funny deals? Oh, I know. I
- 52:00Speaker 3: may look pretty dumb, but I know how to read.
- 52:02Speaker 3: You've been selling a lot of playground stuff to the city,
- 52:05Speaker 3: and all they've got to show for it is bills.
- 52:07Speaker 3: The equipment in the playgrounds is just the same. Has
- 52:09Speaker 3: been the same for the last seven years. Not one
- 52:12Speaker 3: piece of that new equipment was ever delivered.
- 52:14Speaker 2: So what?
- 52:15Speaker 3: Well, you're not going to get away with it. That's
- 52:16Speaker 3: so what. I'll expose you and your friends, and they'll
- 52:19Speaker 3: run you out of town.
- 52:20Speaker 4: On a rail.
- 52:21Speaker 3: That's what. Fine. And you'll be right there with us, Todd.
- 52:25Speaker 3: You know that, I suppose.
- 52:26Speaker 2: I haven't done anything.
- 52:27Speaker 3: You gave me an order, Commissioner. Or don't you remember
- 52:31Speaker 3: last night? Last night?
- 52:34Speaker 2: I don't remember anything about last night.
- 52:36Speaker 3: All right, then just take my word for it. You're
- 52:39Speaker 3: all sewed up in this deal, Commissioner, and you'll string
- 52:41Speaker 3: along or land in jail. And this time, I'll forget
- 52:45Speaker 3: to send Sid down with a writ. All right, Mr. McIntosh.
- 52:50Speaker 3: I guess you've got me where you want me. Well.
- 52:53Speaker 2: So maybe I'll just have to land in that jail.
- 52:55Speaker 3: What? Now, don't be a fool, Todd. Mr. McIntosh, I'm
- 52:58Speaker 3: not cut out for this, and I can't argue with you.
- 53:01Speaker 3: I'm just an ordinary small-timer without too much brain. But
- 53:04Speaker 3: I've got what you might call a conscience.
- 53:06Speaker 9: Now, look.
- 53:06Speaker 2: You're not just fooling around with politics. You're fooling around.
- 53:09Speaker 3: With the health and the safety of little kids. Well, you.
- 53:12Speaker 2: Now, maybe I can stay out of jail all right
- 53:14Speaker 2: by stringing along with you, but I'm not going to
- 53:16Speaker 2: stay out of jail if it means sending some kid.
- 53:18Speaker 3: To the hospital. Now, you just go ahead and do
- 53:20Speaker 3: your worst to me, because that's what I'm going to
- 53:22Speaker 3: do to you. Paper, paper, read all about it.
- 53:27Speaker 2: Commissioner Todd exposes her.
- 53:31Speaker 3: Commissioner Todd tells all.
- 53:32Speaker 2: Commissioner Todd and Kraft bring in a couple days.
- 53:36Speaker 3: Mama.
- 53:37Speaker 2: Mama, are you home?
- 53:39Speaker 4: Mama.
- 53:40Speaker 3: Mama. I guess she's gone.
- 53:55Speaker 4: No, I'm not, Wilbur.
- 53:57Speaker 3: Oh, you're still here, huh?
- 53:59Speaker 5: I've been waiting for you. I couldn't leave without... Well,
- 54:02Speaker 5: while you were in jail. You got out all right, huh?
- 54:06Speaker 3: Well, I'm out now, but... something tells me it's just
- 54:10Speaker 3: a temporary arrangement.
- 54:14Speaker 4: What happened, Wilbur?
- 54:15Speaker 2: I gave that Mr. McIntosh a piece of my mind.
- 54:18Speaker 3: I told him off, all right. Him and his whole crowd.
- 54:21Speaker 3: They're crooks, Mama. No. Sure. There it is in the paper. See?
- 54:27Speaker 2: Oh.
- 54:28Speaker 4: But why, you're here, too.
- 54:31Speaker 3: Oh, yeah. I'm all over it.
- 54:34Speaker 4: Wilbur, what's going to happen now?
- 54:36Speaker 2: Well, first of all, I resigned.
- 54:38Speaker 4: You mean you have no job?
- 54:40Speaker 3: I haven't got anything. Well, I guess I was born
- 54:43Speaker 3: to be a failure. You'll be better off without me, Mama.
- 54:46Speaker 4: Oh, now wait. You just sit down there and rest.
- 54:49Speaker 4: What you need is a nice hot cup of coffee.
- 54:52Speaker 3: But, Mama, don't you have to catch a train or something?
- 54:54Speaker 4: What train?
- 54:55Speaker 3: But you said you.
- 54:56Speaker 4: Now, don't argue. You're just tired and hungry. I'll go
- 55:00Speaker 4: see what's in the icebox.
- 55:04Speaker 3: Mama. What? They're here, Mama. They've come to get me.
- 55:11Speaker 2: Oh, don't worry.
- 55:12Speaker 4: I'll wait for you, Wilbur, if it's 20 years.
- 55:15Speaker 3: Open up here.
- 55:17Speaker 2: Open up here.
- 55:17Speaker 3: Open up. Goodbye, Mama.
- 55:20Speaker 4: Goodbye, Wilbur.
- 55:22Speaker 3: Come to see me in jail, will you?
- 55:24Speaker 4: Yes, Wilbur. I'll bring you some nice cigars.
- 55:28Speaker 3: I don't smoke, Mama.
- 55:32Speaker 2: Is Mr.
- 55:32Speaker 3: Todd here? Yes, he is. All right, gentlemen, give it. Hey. Say, what?
- 55:43Speaker 7: Mr.
- 55:43Speaker 3: Mayor. Evening, Mr. Todd. Just a little.
- 55:45Speaker 2: Expression of appreciation from the Citizen Club of Glendale.
- 55:48Speaker 3: You've done a fine job, Mr. Todd.
- 55:51Speaker 2: We'll have every one of those crooks in jail by morning.
- 55:53Speaker 4: But what about Wilbur?
- 55:54Speaker 9: Mr.
- 55:54Speaker 2: Todd, your husband is public-spirited citizen number one.
- 55:58Speaker 3: Oh! Mama, it's a dream. Wake me up.
- 56:02Speaker 4: Oh, God.
- 56:03Speaker 3: Why, you rascal, you.
- 56:04Speaker 9: Mr.
- 56:04Speaker 3: Todd. Wonderful work, Todd. Wonderful. That was a brilliant idea
- 56:11Speaker 3: of yours.
- 56:11Speaker 4: What idea, Mr.
- 56:12Speaker 3: Kirkwood? Why, getting in with those crooks just so we
- 56:15Speaker 3: could expose them. A regular undercover man, eh, Todd? Undercover man? Sure, sure.
- 56:21Speaker 8: Oh!
- 56:24Speaker 3: Oh, yeah. Yeah, sure. And listen, Todd, if you're not
- 56:27Speaker 3: going to be too busy, I've got a job waiting
- 56:30Speaker 3: for you. The managership of the Kirkwood Furniture Company. Manager? Mama,
- 56:35Speaker 3: did you hear?
- 56:35Speaker 4: Oh, I always knew you'd be a big man, Wilbur.
- 56:38Speaker 3: Oh, wait. Mr.
- 56:40Speaker 2: Kirkwood, I don't want it.
- 56:41Speaker 3: Huh? Just give me back my desk and my old job.
- 56:45Speaker 3: That's all. Anything you say, Todd. Beep!
- 56:49Speaker 7: Beep!
