- 0:00Speaker 1: With Stu Gatz and Hockman. I mean....
- 0:05Speaker 2: I mean, it's been a while, huh?
- 0:07Speaker 3: People thought we'd go an entire week without a With
- 0:11Speaker 3: Stu Gatz and Hockman episode.
- 0:13Speaker 4: Shame on you, whoever thought that. Should we.
- 0:19Speaker 3: We have some news that Taylor doesn't know, but you
- 0:23Speaker 3: and I know, and it's kind of exciting, and I
- 0:25Speaker 3: was thinking maybe we should tease it.
- 0:27Speaker 5: And, uh.
- 0:29Speaker 6: and see what his reaction is. Yes, I have told Taylor.
- 0:32Speaker 6: I haven't given him any details. I just said we
- 0:35Speaker 6: have a surprise. Listen, it was funny, Taylor, because Hawk
- 0:39Speaker 6: texted me the surprise. And I responded to him, did
- 0:42Speaker 6: you tell Taylor yet? And he said, no.
- 0:44Speaker 2: I said, you should send it to him. He'll get
- 0:46Speaker 2: a great yawn out of it.
- 0:50Speaker 6: But I do believe, and I did tell Taylor this, Hawk,
- 0:53Speaker 6: that I think this surprise, I'm not certain anything, any
- 0:58Speaker 6: surprise we could offer Taylor would make him happier than
- 1:02Speaker 6: the surprise we're going to offer him today.
- 1:05Speaker 3: Well, a baseball team contacted me. And they wanted to
- 1:09Speaker 3: gauge my interest in a with Stugatz and Hockman bobblehead night.
- 1:18Speaker 1: Wow.
- 1:19Speaker 3: Which, obviously, tickles my fancy.
- 1:24Speaker 7: Yes.
- 1:25Speaker 3: And they even sent some mock-ups. Here's what we're thinking,
- 1:29Speaker 3: and we have to get a sponsor, and so on
- 1:31Speaker 3: and so forth. But we'd like to have you guys
- 1:32Speaker 3: out there. And I don't want to mention the team.
- 1:35Speaker 3: I don't want to give you any more specifics. Stugatz
- 1:38Speaker 3: kind of had a brilliant idea where you also are on.
- 1:42Speaker 4: The bobblehead and you're yawning.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Wow.
- 1:49Speaker 6: It's the first time he's been legitimately excited.
- 1:52Speaker 2: I just perked up for the first time since the
- 1:54Speaker 2: show started. I mean, Taylor, and I will tell you this.
- 1:56Speaker 2: You don't have to drive that far. Can I say that?
- 1:58Speaker 2: Can I say that?
- 1:59Speaker 1: Imagine.
- 2:00Speaker 3: Imagine his Marlins thread when they find out that there's
- 2:04Speaker 3: a With Stugatz and Hockman bobblehead night featuring a yawning
- 2:08Speaker 3: Taylor on the bobble.
- 2:10Speaker 6: We're going to have our own night, Taylor. We're going
- 2:12Speaker 6: to go out to the ballpark. It's going to be me, you, Hock,
- 2:15Speaker 6: and Ricardo, I think, because Ricardo is the only one
- 2:18Speaker 6: who loves baseball and bobbleheads more than you do. And
- 2:22Speaker 6: this is, listen, you yawn when me and Hock talk,
- 2:25Speaker 6: and I understand why.
- 2:26Speaker 2: But we are two bleeping legends, man. I mean, we're
- 2:29Speaker 2: getting our own bobbleheads.
- 2:31Speaker 8: So Hawk, my biggest question is just what would I
- 2:34Speaker 8: be wearing in this bobblehead? Because I recently went to
- 2:37Speaker 8: a Marlins game and somebody approached me and they said, Hey,
- 2:40Speaker 8: do you want to go on the Jumbotron and play
- 2:42Speaker 8: one of these games? And I said, yeah, I'm wearing
- 2:44Speaker 8: a Yankee hat. They said, you have to take the
- 2:46Speaker 8: Yankee hat off and put something Marlins on. I go,
- 2:48Speaker 8: Probably not.
- 2:50Speaker 9: Really?
- 2:50Speaker 4: You stood your ground.
- 2:51Speaker 3: Was that Jeremy Taché that did that?
- 2:54Speaker 10: 100%.
- 2:54Speaker 4: It's always him, I guess. Well, that's something in the works.
- 3:03Speaker 3: So we appreciate all the With Stugatz and Hockman listeners,
- 3:06Speaker 3: because that may happen.
- 3:07Speaker 11: Right.
- 3:07Speaker 2: Taylor, was I wrong?
- 3:08Speaker 6: That delights you, right? Like a bobblehead night for me, you,
- 3:11Speaker 6: and Hock at a baseball game, man.
- 3:13Speaker 2: That's cool.
- 3:14Speaker 1: So if this happens.
- 3:16Speaker 8: You could cancel Christmas because there is no better gift
- 3:18Speaker 8: you guys.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Could give me. You're getting your own.
- 3:22Speaker 1: Yes.
- 3:23Speaker 3: If you never did believe in Santa Claus, you just
- 3:27Speaker 3: became a believer.
- 3:28Speaker 2: He's more excited just to watch the baseball game.
- 3:31Speaker 4: It's getting close. It's getting close.
- 3:33Speaker 1: Yes.
- 3:33Speaker 3: We have, speaking of merchandise, new additions to my son's
- 3:37Speaker 3: merch store. I'll start the podcast out with that because
- 3:41Speaker 3: there are now tumblers and beer pints.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Mmm.
- 3:45Speaker 3: So imagine I'm drinking a smoothie right now. Imagine you're
- 3:49Speaker 3: drinking from a With Stugatz and Hockman bottle.
- 3:52Speaker 4: Tumblr. I mean, the time of your life.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Yes.
- 3:55Speaker 3: So, if you want to support this pod, go to
- 3:59Speaker 3: horsemuffins.com and check out the new merch.
- 4:04Speaker 4: How's your merch store coming?
- 4:06Speaker 2: We're getting to it. I mean, my daughter, she can
- 4:12Speaker 2: work a little faster. Let's go.
- 4:13Speaker 8: I'm on the site right now.
- 4:15Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 4:16Speaker 8: The I mean pint glass and the I mean tumbler.
- 4:19Speaker 2: I've already added it to my cart.
- 4:21Speaker 9: Really?
- 4:22Speaker 3: Honestly, they happen to be very like the logos. My
- 4:25Speaker 3: son made happened to work well on the tumblers and
- 4:28Speaker 3: the in the pints.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Right.
- 4:30Speaker 3: And as Solana was pointing out on the radio show,
- 4:32Speaker 3: That's a perfect white elephant gift. Yeah, at the office,
- 4:35Speaker 3: you got to get a $ 20 gift for someone. You
- 4:39Speaker 3: get a Tumblr with Mark Hockman's sports comic. I mean,
- 4:42Speaker 3: people won't know what hit them.
- 4:44Speaker 2: I want someone at Meadowlark to buy that. That's a
- 4:46Speaker 2: white elephant. Let it open it.
- 4:51Speaker 3: There's a really cool one with the old 790 logo.
- 4:54Speaker 4: I think that one's badass, man.
- 4:56Speaker 2: I remember that. Yes, very nice.
- 4:58Speaker 9: Yes.
- 4:59Speaker 4: Anyway, it's up at horsemuffins.com.
- 5:02Speaker 3: Speaking of money and subscriptions and stuff, I want to
- 5:09Speaker 3: celebrate Greg Cody today on the podcast because he's been
- 5:14Speaker 3: a long-running member of the Dan Levitard Show back from
- 5:18Speaker 3: when I started in 2004.
- 5:19Speaker 4: And I had known.
- 5:21Speaker 3: Cody because I was just friendly with Dan, obviously, in college,
- 5:24Speaker 3: and Cody was– you know, often around us because he
- 5:27Speaker 3: would come to some of our events.
- 5:29Speaker 4: You know, he was like he was an adult already.
- 5:31Speaker 4: We were kids.
- 5:33Speaker 3: But to see I wanted to see how many years
- 5:36Speaker 3: Cody wrote for the Herald because today was his final column.
- 5:39Speaker 3: And so I went to Chris Cody's Twitter because I
- 5:42Speaker 3: assumed he had a link to Greg Cody's tweet. I
- 5:45Speaker 3: didn't know what Cody was on Twitter.
- 5:47Speaker 2: Right.
- 5:47Speaker 3: I went to Chris Cody's Twitter. Chris still subscribes to me.
- 5:52Speaker 3: On super followers.
- 5:54Speaker 12: Huh?
- 5:55Speaker 2: On Twitter.
- 5:56Speaker 13: Really?
- 5:56Speaker 4: Because it says in purple, subscribes to you.
- 5:59Speaker 3: So I sent Cody a DM today going, hey, I
- 6:03Speaker 3: deactivated that account.
- 6:04Speaker 4: Over a year ago.
- 6:05Speaker 2: He's still paying for it. Elon is charging.
- 6:08Speaker 4: You $ 2.
- 6:09Speaker 2: 99 a month. You might want to get your money back.
- 6:15Speaker 6: Which is really a great way of explaining just the
- 6:18Speaker 6: podcast game and subscription game in general. How many subscriptions
- 6:23Speaker 6: do you have for $ 2. 55 a month, whatever it is,
- 6:26Speaker 6: where you just simply won't cancel it because you just
- 6:28Speaker 6: don't want to, you know?
- 6:29Speaker 3: It's just not worth the effort of canceling, right?
- 6:34Speaker 4: And that's my hope with horsemuffins.com.
- 6:36Speaker 2: And this podcast.
- 6:37Speaker 1: Anyway.
- 6:40Speaker 4: I did want to celebrate Greg Cody.
- 6:42Speaker 3: Someone had DM'd us with Cody being let go from
- 6:46Speaker 3: the Herald. Shouldn't you do a podcast about him? And
- 6:50Speaker 3: I did have that in the works. His farewell column
- 6:54Speaker 3: is in the Herald today. 54 years of writing. Greg Cody.
- 6:58Speaker 4: 54 years.
- 6:59Speaker 3: So we featured him on the show. At the beginning
- 7:05Speaker 3: of the show, it was once a week. And he
- 7:08Speaker 3: would come on as the singing sports writer.
- 7:10Speaker 1: Yep.
- 7:10Speaker 3: And it was a way for Dan to give some
- 7:13Speaker 3: extra publicity to a friend of his from the Miami Herald.
- 7:18Speaker 3: Somebody who he looked up to as a writer, but
- 7:20Speaker 3: also as a friend.
- 7:21Speaker 2: A mentor.
- 7:22Speaker 1: Yes. I mean, yes.
- 7:23Speaker 2: Really kind of showed Dan the ropes at the Herald.
- 7:25Speaker 2: They're very, very close. I became very, very close with
- 7:28Speaker 2: Greg Cody. I love him dearly. What an amazing run
- 7:31Speaker 2: to do 54 years of anything.
- 7:33Speaker 1: Incredible.
- 7:34Speaker 4: Incredible. It really is.
- 7:35Speaker 6: Yes.
- 7:36Speaker 3: This is the old Greg Cody open we used to
- 7:41Speaker 3: play when he would come on with the show once
- 7:43Speaker 3: a week.
- 7:45Speaker 7: And now a man whose singing ability is eclipsed only
- 7:49Speaker 7: by his writing ability. Straight from the newsroom at the
- 7:52Speaker 7: Miami Herald, it's the one, the only singing sports writer,
- 7:58Speaker 7: Greg Cody.
- 8:00Speaker 14: He's getting knocked down.
- 8:02Speaker 15: Can they get up again?
- 8:03Speaker 16: Are they ever going to beat Detroit?
- 8:05Speaker 1: Greg Cody.
- 8:05Speaker 7: Cody, ladies and gentlemen, straight from your newspaper, right into
- 8:10Speaker 7: your radio.
- 8:11Speaker 14: I am a Marlins fan in my section alone. Ooh,
- 8:19Speaker 14: I am so lonely.
- 8:22Speaker 7: Greg Cody. Making musical magic, Greg Cody.
- 8:32Speaker 14: Thank you.
- 8:32Speaker 2: I appreciate that.
- 8:33Speaker 14: One of my fans just handed me a dozen roses.
- 8:36Speaker 1: Check out his blog at MiamiHerald.com. It's Greg Cody.
- 8:46Speaker 3: The blog things make you laugh right because i so
- 8:49Speaker 3: he would come out once a week and at the
- 8:50Speaker 3: beginning we weren't paying him and he would come on
- 8:54Speaker 3: and he would beg me can you please promote the
- 8:57Speaker 3: blog right it was a big new thing for newspapers
- 9:00Speaker 3: like a writer having a blog and he's like can
- 9:03Speaker 3: you put it in the open yeah like tell people
- 9:05Speaker 3: to read my blog you know yes and uh He
- 9:08Speaker 3: would come out once a week. They would talk sports,
- 9:11Speaker 3: but he would always have a song ready to go first.
- 9:13Speaker 11: Right.
- 9:14Speaker 3: And Dan would introduce him as the singing sports writer.
- 9:18Speaker 3: And Cody put a lot of effort into writing his song.
- 9:21Speaker 4: Of course he did.
- 9:21Speaker 6: He took great pride in the songs that he was
- 9:24Speaker 6: going to do. He actually has a pretty good voice,
- 9:26Speaker 6: Greg Cody.
- 9:26Speaker 2: He does. He has a good voice. I was kind
- 9:29Speaker 2: of fascinated.
- 9:30Speaker 6: By the big voice. Speaking of great voices. Really digging
- 9:33Speaker 6: deep for that last Greg Cody. I mean, that was amazing.
- 9:37Speaker 3: Well, it was funny because I had him, like, there
- 9:38Speaker 3: was really nothing to intro him with.
- 9:40Speaker 4: So I was just like, so just say it again.
- 9:44Speaker 4: Greg Cody.
- 9:45Speaker 3: And then he said it like a second time. Ladies
- 9:47Speaker 3: and gentlemen, Greg Cody. Like, ladies and gentlemen. Like, what
- 9:51Speaker 3: a terrible intro.
- 9:52Speaker 2: We'll get back to Greg in a second.
- 9:53Speaker 6: Was there anything more enjoyable for you than a recording session.
- 9:57Speaker 2: With the big voice?
- 9:58Speaker 4: He was the best.
- 9:59Speaker 10: Amazing.
- 10:00Speaker 3: He was honestly the best because he loved what we
- 10:02Speaker 3: were doing it was so different obviously than anything he
- 10:05Speaker 3: was doing he's still the voice of westwood one amazing
- 10:07Speaker 3: david lee yes um here's one of cody's songs listen
- 10:11Speaker 3: i had thousands to choose from it felt like here's
- 10:15Speaker 3: one of them this was uh a Christmas carol, The
- 10:18Speaker 3: Dolphins Were Playing Poorly, and he sang a little song
- 10:22Speaker 3: about the Dolphins.
- 10:23Speaker 5: Gone to hell, gone to hell, stumbling all the way.
- 10:27Speaker 16: Oh, what fun it is to watch the.
- 10:30Speaker 5: Dolphins' offense play. Hey, gone to hell, gone to hell,
- 10:34Speaker 5: a season.
- 10:34Speaker 12: In the mire.
- 10:36Speaker 5: Oh, what fun it would be to see Dan Henning
- 10:39Speaker 5: set on fire. Dashing through the field, one check down
- 10:43Speaker 5: at a time. It's third and 12, but Chad Henning
- 10:46Speaker 5: dinks a pass.
- 10:47Speaker 13: Behind the line.
- 10:48Speaker 16: The offense plays like crap. The field, it seems so steep.
- 10:52Speaker 5: Hey, over there, the guy with the first down marker
- 10:55Speaker 5: is asleep.
- 10:56Speaker 2: Oh, gone to hell, gone to hell.
- 10:58Speaker 5: Miami's out of the hunt. The busiest man on the
- 11:02Speaker 5: whole damn field is lining up to punt. Oh, gone
- 11:05Speaker 5: to hell, it's another long field goal try.
- 11:07Speaker 2: Oh, what a treat.
- 11:09Speaker 5: The settling dolphins take more three-point shots than the heat.
- 11:16Speaker 4: Really well done.
- 11:17Speaker 11: Yes.
- 11:17Speaker 4: That's really well done. Well written.
- 11:19Speaker 2: That song rings true for just about every dolphin season.
- 11:22Speaker 1: Go ahead.
- 11:23Speaker 3: And we didn't know what he would sing when he
- 11:25Speaker 3: was coming out with us. He would just have a
- 11:27Speaker 3: song ready, and Dan would say, all right, give us
- 11:30Speaker 3: the singing sports writer. Give us your song for the day.
- 11:32Speaker 3: This is one, I guess, Roger Clemens and the steroids
- 11:37Speaker 3: and all that was in the news. And so Cody
- 11:40Speaker 3: brought a little music. You can hear a touch of
- 11:43Speaker 3: it in the background. A little Rocket Man from Greg Cody,
- 11:47Speaker 3: the singing sports writer.
- 11:49Speaker 17: Oh, I think it's gonna be a long, long time
- 11:53Speaker 17: before anybody believes that he's not lying. He's not the
- 11:59Speaker 17: man they think he is at home. Oh, no, no, no.
- 12:04Speaker 17: He's the Rocket Man.
- 12:07Speaker 12: Rocket Man denying.
- 12:09Speaker 17: Steroid use out there. Yes, we think it's going to
- 12:14Speaker 17: be a long, long time before Roger Clemens' name is
- 12:18Speaker 17: free of slime. He tried to phone trap his trainer.
- 12:23Speaker 17: It didn't work. Oh, he's such a jerk.
- 12:27Speaker 1: Roy D.
- 12:28Speaker 12: Mann denying HGHL. Wow, I wanted more lyrics.
- 12:44Speaker 2: I wanted more lyrics, Cody. That's so rare with your songs.
- 12:47Speaker 5: It is.
- 12:47Speaker 16: I caught you with Roidy Man.
- 12:49Speaker 2: Roidy Man is mine. Roidy Man. It's delightful. Roidy Man,
- 12:55Speaker 2: a wonderful twist on the lyrics.
- 12:57Speaker 18: Yeah, well, thank you.
- 13:01Speaker 3: I think we may end up doing another cody episode
- 13:03Speaker 3: because there are so many songs and i didn't want
- 13:05Speaker 3: to bog you down with 50 of them today but
- 13:07Speaker 3: there's so many songs that he has performed did he
- 13:11Speaker 3: still do songs like so i left that that's in
- 13:14Speaker 3: like 2004 2005 i'm right yes um i think i
- 13:18Speaker 3: left the show yes like eight years later or so
- 13:21Speaker 3: Was he still doing a song every week for I
- 13:25Speaker 3: think short term?
- 13:26Speaker 6: He did him after you left for, you know, a
- 13:28Speaker 6: couple of years and then he became just a bigger
- 13:30Speaker 6: part of the show where he was coming in.
- 13:32Speaker 9: Right.
- 13:33Speaker 2: He was co-hosting one day, two days a week.
- 13:35Speaker 6: He started something called Back in My Day, which was fantastic.
- 13:39Speaker 4: That I love.
- 13:40Speaker 6: You'll love this. We went out to Vegas. We did
- 13:43Speaker 6: two live shows. At the same place you just went to,
- 13:46Speaker 6: we did them outside. What was the name of that hotel, Hawk,
- 13:49Speaker 6: that you went to?
- 13:49Speaker 1: Circa.
- 13:50Speaker 6: Yeah, we went to the Circa. We did two live shows.
- 13:52Speaker 6: Greg Cody and his band were performing live, kind of
- 13:56Speaker 6: like a side act to what me and Dan were doing.
- 13:58Speaker 6: It was fantastic, yes.
- 14:00Speaker 3: Yes, I remember seeing that on social media. That's the
- 14:02Speaker 3: Hee Haw 3, I believe.
- 14:04Speaker 2: Yeah, the Hee Haw 3.
- 14:06Speaker 8: Jeremy's second mention, this podcast.
- 14:08Speaker 2: That's right.
- 14:09Speaker 3: Jeremy Taché has all of a sudden hijacked the podcast.
- 14:13Speaker 1: The hee haw.
- 14:14Speaker 3: I remember this from in college before we started the
- 14:18Speaker 3: radio show.
- 14:18Speaker 1: Right.
- 14:19Speaker 3: Dan used to love having Cody tell the story of
- 14:23Speaker 3: being a little league umpire and punching out little kids
- 14:27Speaker 3: with these just over the top punch outs.
- 14:33Speaker 6: He loved calling the third strike on a seven-year-old.
- 14:39Speaker 2: He really did.
- 14:40Speaker 3: Nothing like punching out a seven-year-old in Little League baseball
- 14:45Speaker 3: with an over-the-top call. Anyway, we could do a million
- 14:49Speaker 3: Cody songs, but I want to get it spawned some
- 14:52Speaker 3: fake Cody songs and black Cody songs. But before we
- 14:56Speaker 3: get to the songs, Greg Cody, I think, as I've
- 14:59Speaker 3: been doing my research for this podcast, he must have
- 15:02Speaker 3: been the birthplace of Mark Hockman sports comic. Cody used
- 15:08Speaker 3: to write a column, and I don't know if it
- 15:10Speaker 3: was once a week or once a month, but it
- 15:12Speaker 3: was essentially one-liners. It was hacky one-liners.
- 15:15Speaker 1: Yes.
- 15:16Speaker 4: And Dan, I remember, said to me, why don't you
- 15:18Speaker 4: have him read them on the.
- 15:21Speaker 3: Air as like a comedian, and we'll see how it goes.
- 15:24Speaker 3: And I think this is probably where I got the
- 15:26Speaker 3: idea for Mark Hockman's sports comic. So this is Cody
- 15:31Speaker 3: coming on, instead of doing a song– He's going to
- 15:34Speaker 3: read some of his sports one-liners.
- 15:37Speaker 16: Hey, the NBA draft is tonight, and Milwaukee's on the clock.
- 15:40Speaker 16: It's not definite who the Bucs will pick. The only
- 15:42Speaker 16: certainty is that Rashid Wallace will argue the call. A
- 15:50Speaker 16: 7'8 Chinese player, Sun Mingming, hopes to be drafted. To
- 15:54Speaker 16: better his chances, he has begun calling himself Birdie. That's
- 16:01Speaker 16: a weird story with FSU quarterback Wyatt Sexton, huh? Tallahassee
- 16:05Speaker 16: police stopped him for behaving erratically, and he identified himself
- 16:09Speaker 16: as God. That's when cops arrested him for impersonating Bobby Bob.
- 16:17Speaker 16: You know, speaking of weird, haven't Michael Jackson and Mike
- 16:20Speaker 16: Tyson become all but interchangeable as examples of pop culture
- 16:23Speaker 16: gone awry? Remember how Tyson once threatened an opponent that
- 16:26Speaker 16: he would eat his children? Isn't that sort of why
- 16:29Speaker 16: Jack was on trial? Hey, congratulations to Shaquille O'Neal for
- 16:42Speaker 16: that master's degree from the University of Phoenix. Sure, that's
- 16:46Speaker 16: a for-profit, mostly online college that some might even call
- 16:50Speaker 16: a diploma mill, but how about you tell Shaq that?
- 16:58Speaker 16: The Florida Gators fizzled badly in the College World Series
- 17:03Speaker 16: when it mattered most. Hey, when did Ron Zook start
- 17:05Speaker 16: coaching baseball?
- 17:11Speaker 4: Are we done?
- 17:13Speaker 16: This is sad.
- 17:14Speaker 1: The U.S.
- 17:14Speaker 16: Women's soccer team has cut longtime star Brandi Chastain from
- 17:17Speaker 16: its roster. Good news, though. They've offered a full-time public
- 17:21Speaker 16: relations role to Chastain's sports bra.
- 17:24Speaker 11: Hey, thank you, ladies and gentlemen.
- 17:26Speaker 16: Remember to keep your feet on the ground and keep
- 17:29Speaker 16: reaching for the Miller Lite.
- 17:30Speaker 1: Good night, everybody.
- 17:35Speaker 2: Oh, my God.
- 17:36Speaker 4: So you can see where Mark Hockman's sports comic was birthed.
- 17:39Speaker 6: Yes, Cody is your inspiration.
- 17:42Speaker 2: My inspiration? I said, I think I can make this
- 17:45Speaker 2: even worse.
- 17:47Speaker 6: Dan and I are laughing there, but we're laughing at
- 17:49Speaker 6: how poorly it's going. But I remember asking Greg, and
- 17:53Speaker 6: he goes, they're funnier in writing, in print.
- 18:00Speaker 3: Anyway, Greg Cody being on the show singing songs birthed
- 18:05Speaker 3: a lot of fakes. Fake Cody, though, became a regular...
- 18:10Speaker 3: contributor to the show. Do you remember who fake Cody was?
- 18:14Speaker 1: I don't, man.
- 18:15Speaker 6: That's a great question. I do not remember. I remember
- 18:17Speaker 6: weird stuff. You know that by now. I do not
- 18:21Speaker 6: remember the fake Cody.
- 18:22Speaker 2: Who was it?
- 18:23Speaker 4: Fake Cody was Mike Marchand. Oh, that's damn. How could
- 18:26Speaker 4: I forget?
- 18:27Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 18:28Speaker 3: And he was, I honestly, he rivaled Greg Cody. Mike
- 18:32Speaker 3: Marchand worked for us. He was one of the board
- 18:34Speaker 3: ops and producers.
- 18:35Speaker 1: Yes.
- 18:36Speaker 2: Very funny guy. Yes.
- 18:37Speaker 3: Very funny guy. He worked as hard as Greg Cody
- 18:41Speaker 3: did on the song. Like when he would call in
- 18:44Speaker 3: and you'd see fake Cody on the line, you'd go, whoa,
- 18:47Speaker 3: we got a winner here. We didn't even have to
- 18:48Speaker 3: screen it. Like it was always good. He had a
- 18:52Speaker 3: couple of legendary calls, songs, ER maniac.
- 18:57Speaker 4: Do you remember that one? Of course I do.
- 18:59Speaker 1: Yes. One of my favorites.
- 19:00Speaker 4: So it was about, uh, Dontrell Willis.
- 19:02Speaker 3: And what happened was fake Cody, uh, would call in
- 19:06Speaker 3: and had music behind him. And he forced Greg Cody
- 19:10Speaker 3: to start using music behind some of the songs that
- 19:13Speaker 3: he would do because he wanted to keep up with
- 19:15Speaker 3: fake Cody who had a better production element than him.
- 19:17Speaker 2: Yes, which the real Cody hated because he just wanted
- 19:19Speaker 2: to do the minimal amount of work and put his
- 19:21Speaker 2: song out.
- 19:24Speaker 3: This is fake Cody, a legendary Levitard show song, E-R-A-N-I-A-K.
- 19:31Speaker 1: So good.
- 19:32Speaker 13: Oh, oh.
- 19:35Speaker 11: Just a black boy on a Tuesday night looking for
- 19:46Speaker 11: his victory.
- 19:48Speaker 15: Hitters can't even see any of his balls. They say
- 19:52Speaker 15: he is lanky. Blocking on to follow Duka's glove. Changing
- 19:58Speaker 15: movement on his fastball. He has pitched a total of
- 20:02Speaker 15: three complete games without the help of the Wizinator. He
- 20:07Speaker 15: can strike you out in three with the help of
- 20:11Speaker 15: Mark Wiley.
- 20:12Speaker 19: 4.08 is not his base salary. E-R-A-N-I-A-K, E-R-A-N-I-A-K on the mouth.
- 20:22Speaker 19: And he's twitching like he's never bleached before. E-R-A-N-I-A-K, E-R-A-N-I-A-K
- 20:30Speaker 19: on the mouth. And his slider's sliding like it's never
- 20:35Speaker 19: slid before.
- 20:41Speaker 3: Now, admittedly, because I know Taylor probably enjoyed it because
- 20:45Speaker 3: it's about Dontrell, but you probably don't know the song
- 20:47Speaker 3: Maniac from Michael Cimbello.
- 20:49Speaker 1: There's no way. No, I actually do know that song.
- 20:50Speaker 4: Wow.
- 20:51Speaker 1: Oh, you do?
- 20:51Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 20:51Speaker 13: Wow.
- 20:52Speaker 4: You know what movie it's from?
- 20:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 20:54Speaker 4: Dirty Dancing?
- 20:55Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 20:57Speaker 4: That's a very good guess.
- 20:59Speaker 2: Flashdance.
- 21:00Speaker 1: Yeah, close.
- 21:00Speaker 4: And Flashdance with Jennifer Beals.
- 21:04Speaker 2: He hasn't yawned yet, Taylor. This bobblehead.
- 21:06Speaker 4: I'm telling you.
- 21:07Speaker 2: It's the bobblehead.
- 21:08Speaker 3: He is so engaged now.
- 21:10Speaker 8: It's also Greg Cody. Like, there is nobody who loves
- 21:13Speaker 8: Greg Cody more than me, I think.
- 21:14Speaker 2: Well, I do.
- 21:16Speaker 4: What a run he had. Amazing run, yes.
- 21:19Speaker 3: On the Levitard Show, still going, but in the Miami
- 21:22Speaker 3: Herald as well. I mean, it just doesn't happen like that.
- 21:25Speaker 2: I texted him, Hawk.
- 21:26Speaker 6: I said he's on my Mount Rushmore of South Florida
- 21:28Speaker 6: sports columnist.
- 21:29Speaker 2: I did, and he is. He should be on anyone's
- 21:31Speaker 2: Mount Rushmore.
- 21:32Speaker 4: So who would it be? It's got to be Edwin Pope.
- 21:35Speaker 2: Edwin Pope, for sure. He has naming rights.
- 21:38Speaker 1: Yes.
- 21:39Speaker 2: Well, Greg.
- 21:42Speaker 1: Dan, of course.
- 21:49Speaker 2: It goes without saying that Dan is on there.
- 21:52Speaker 6: He's one of the best columnists and journalists that we've
- 21:56Speaker 6: had in our industry.
- 21:57Speaker 2: So, yes, it goes without saying.
- 21:59Speaker 4: He's not on mine, though. I'm surprised to hear that
- 22:02Speaker 4: he's on yours. I felt bad. Who was the fourth spot?
- 22:06Speaker 2: Dave Hyde's got to be in that conversation.
- 22:07Speaker 4: Dave Hyde, probably. Barry Jackson. Would Barry Jackson like a word?
- 22:10Speaker 4: He's not a columnist.
- 22:12Speaker 2: Yeah, he's not.
- 22:13Speaker 6: More reporting on media stuff. And he's given more opinion lately,
- 22:17Speaker 6: but not really a columnist.
- 22:18Speaker 3: I mean, big difference between a writer and a columnist.
- 22:22Speaker 3: A columnist was always what... what a writer in the
- 22:26Speaker 3: newspaper was striving for, because then you didn't have to
- 22:29Speaker 3: just write the facts of what you observed.
- 22:32Speaker 4: You could write your opinion.
- 22:34Speaker 2: Right.
- 22:34Speaker 4: And so that was reserved for special people.
- 22:37Speaker 7: Yes.
- 22:38Speaker 3: Like Edwin Pope and Cody and Dan. Dave Hyde did
- 22:41Speaker 3: it for years and years and years.
- 22:44Speaker 2: I'm trying to think of the fourth one, because Hyde, Pope.
- 22:47Speaker 11: Oh, no, no.
- 22:48Speaker 2: I think we have it.
- 22:48Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 22:48Speaker 4: Cody, Pope, Hyde, and Levitard.
- 22:50Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 22:50Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah.
- 22:52Speaker 2: Well, not for you, but.
- 22:57Speaker 4: Who did I read? Frank Cherubino in the Palm Beach Post.
- 23:00Speaker 4: Wasn't really sports.
- 23:02Speaker 1: Right.
- 23:04Speaker 6: I can't really think of a fourth name that would
- 23:06Speaker 6: even rival any of those four.
- 23:08Speaker 2: Those are the four guys I read. Mike Berendino, maybe?
- 23:11Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 23:11Speaker 4: Remember him? I don't think he was a columnist, was he?
- 23:14Speaker 11: No, I don't know.
- 23:14Speaker 4: Charles Bricker? Ooh, Charlie Bricker. Jim Sarney?
- 23:22Speaker 6: Yeah, but Sarnie said there were two papers. There was
- 23:24Speaker 6: a Fort Lauderdale Sun Sentinel. There was a Miami Herald.
- 23:27Speaker 2: Do we still have that?
- 23:28Speaker 4: I'm not sure. Yeah, we've got the Sun Sentinel and
- 23:31Speaker 4: the Herald.
- 23:32Speaker 2: Correct me if I'm wrong.
- 23:33Speaker 6: Sarnie did for the Sentinel what Barry was doing for
- 23:35Speaker 6: the Herald, correct?
- 23:37Speaker 1: No.
- 23:38Speaker 3: Sarnie was doing for the Herald... what Tom Jicka was
- 23:44Speaker 3: doing for the Sun Sentinel. It wasn't until those old
- 23:47Speaker 3: goats retired that Barry Jackson started writing about media. It
- 23:52Speaker 3: was Tom Jicka in one of the papers and Jim
- 23:54Speaker 3: Sorney in another one.
- 23:55Speaker 2: The Jicka man. Anyway, that's Greg Cody.
- 24:01Speaker 3: This is Fake Cody, another famous Fake Cody song when
- 24:06Speaker 3: he sang about Ronnie Brown. Remember, who was the running
- 24:10Speaker 3: back tandem? Who was the running back? It was Cadillac.
- 24:12Speaker 2: Cadillac Williams, Ronnie Brown. Yes, both guys from Auburn.
- 24:15Speaker 12: I believe.
- 24:15Speaker 4: Cadillac Williams, yeah. Went before Ronnie Brown, right? I think so, yes.
- 24:19Speaker 1: To the Bucs. Yeah. Yeah. Yes.
- 24:21Speaker 3: So here is Fake Cody with his Ronnie Brown song.
- 24:26Speaker 18: Ronnie, Ronnie Brown, who are you?
- 24:29Speaker 17: You're just a Cadillac's backup.
- 24:33Speaker 19: Ronnie, Ronnie Brown, who are you?
- 24:36Speaker 18: You're just a combine phenom.
- 24:39Speaker 19: Nick says you run, you catch, you block, you score,
- 24:41Speaker 19: and even play a little fullback.
- 24:44Speaker 2: Little fullback.
- 24:46Speaker 19: But at the end of the day, Greg Cody thinks
- 24:48Speaker 19: you're just a Buick. Buick, Buick Brown, who are you?
- 24:54Speaker 15: You're just a dolphin's number two overall pick.
- 25:00Speaker 1: So good.
- 25:01Speaker 4: Very well done.
- 25:02Speaker 1: Amazing.
- 25:02Speaker 2: Yes.
- 25:03Speaker 3: We used to use just Buick, Buick Brown as a drop.
- 25:08Speaker 3: We used to drop that in all the time. Here's
- 25:12Speaker 3: one more from Fake Cody. This is a song about
- 25:15Speaker 3: Cam Cameron. Believe it or not, this is a song
- 25:17Speaker 3: about wanting Cam Cameron to come and save the Dolphins.
- 25:21Speaker 2: That is correct.
- 25:22Speaker 3: Because he was an authentic guru with the Chargers, and
- 25:25Speaker 3: we were like... Cam Cameron will fix all the Dolphins' problems.
- 25:29Speaker 3: We need Cam Cameron as the head coach.
- 25:31Speaker 2: Turn your thumb this way. That's right.
- 25:34Speaker 3: This is fake Cody with his Cam Cameron song.
- 25:44Speaker 18: They've been flying in your face all the way. Dolphin
- 25:49Speaker 18: fans need a coach that will stay.
- 25:53Speaker 10: We need a.
- 25:54Speaker 18: Man with some conviction. We need a coach with cantaloupe.
- 26:02Speaker 18: He needs to sell our play action. We need a
- 26:08Speaker 18: pro from San Diego.
- 26:11Speaker 10: Camera, camera, camera, camera, camera, camera.
- 26:14Speaker 18: Runs on fourth and one.
- 26:18Speaker 10: You'll never punt. Scoring would be easy if you could
- 26:23Speaker 10: come coach our team. On fourth and goal. Avoid McMichael.
- 26:30Speaker 10: Did I mention Hudson Hawk's already here?
- 26:34Speaker 18: Before he came, our O-line played so queer.
- 26:39Speaker 10: Dom Capers. Is not sufficient. Malarkey is super suey. Please
- 26:49Speaker 10: bring LT. Please bring LT.
- 26:53Speaker 18: Camera, camera, camera, camera, camera run on fourth and one.
- 27:00Speaker 10: Don't throw to Hagan. Scoring would be easy if you
- 27:04Speaker 10: could come coach our team. On fourth and goal, don't
- 27:09Speaker 10: send a lindo.
- 27:14Speaker 6: Just a perfect song choice.
- 27:17Speaker 4: Derek Hagan reference, too.
- 27:19Speaker 1: Unbelievable.
- 27:20Speaker 2: And a Mike Malarkey.
- 27:21Speaker 8: Hug, do you ever have the thought, like, all these
- 27:25Speaker 8: people had this creative outlet with the show to call
- 27:29Speaker 8: in and use the songs, and... since that kind of
- 27:31Speaker 8: has gone away, it feels like we have been cheated
- 27:34Speaker 8: out of so many great songs and like, where, where
- 27:36Speaker 8: did all these people go?
- 27:38Speaker 7: Right.
- 27:38Speaker 6: Well, I mean, that guy worked on the show, so
- 27:41Speaker 6: they all went to social media is where they went.
- 27:44Speaker 6: It's actually a very funny observation, Taylor, uh, We started
- 27:50Speaker 6: using texters.
- 27:52Speaker 3: There was nowhere for people to go who would listen
- 27:55Speaker 3: to Hank Goldberg's show or any of the sports shows
- 27:59Speaker 3: that were stalwarts in any market. There was no outlet
- 28:03Speaker 3: except phone calls, right? For listeners to participate. But every
- 28:08Speaker 3: host of every sports show only wanted serious sports calls,
- 28:14Speaker 3: questions and takes, right?
- 28:16Speaker 4: Opinions.
- 28:16Speaker 3: And obviously all you have to do is look at
- 28:20Speaker 3: social media nowadays there is a wealth of creative people
- 28:26Speaker 3: who didn't have an outlet right and we started to
- 28:29Speaker 3: see on the text line whoa people are funny like
- 28:33Speaker 3: they were firing off one-liners or ideas and we would
- 28:37Speaker 3: start using it in the show like it was like
- 28:39Speaker 3: great jump off points which is when all of a
- 28:42Speaker 3: sudden the callers started to become creative And then the
- 28:45Speaker 3: callers really were driving the show for a couple of years.
- 28:48Speaker 3: I mean, it was really a caller-driven show, but it
- 28:50Speaker 3: was the creativity of the callers.
- 28:52Speaker 1: Yes.
- 28:53Speaker 4: And you saw it a lot with Jim Rome as well, right?
- 28:56Speaker 3: Jim Rome would use callers to get the vibe of
- 28:59Speaker 3: his show, right? Have a take and don't suck and
- 29:02Speaker 3: do the smack off at the end of the year, whatever.
- 29:07Speaker 4: But social media, I believe, if you want to know
- 29:09Speaker 4: where everyone went, Like.
- 29:11Speaker 3: You can go through, you can flip through social media
- 29:14Speaker 3: and see one creative thing after another where you're like,
- 29:18Speaker 3: oh my God, I can't believe how much creativity is
- 29:20Speaker 3: out there.
- 29:21Speaker 4: That's where they all went.
- 29:22Speaker 2: You want an outlet, create your own. That's, that's really
- 29:24Speaker 2: where we're at right now.
- 29:25Speaker 6: And so with the, by the way, those texts that
- 29:28Speaker 6: came in, the text machine was great. I stole so
- 29:31Speaker 6: many of their lines on the show.
- 29:35Speaker 2: But the songs, they just kind of, they went away.
- 29:37Speaker 2: But what I loved about.
- 29:39Speaker 6: Our show and the conversation, that we created with the listeners, Hawk,
- 29:42Speaker 6: they were trying to outdo one another.
- 29:45Speaker 2: And that's when you're really onto something.
- 29:48Speaker 3: It's really– I mean, it's almost the American Idol theory, right?
- 29:52Speaker 3: They're trying to impress the judges more than anything.
- 29:55Speaker 2: That's right.
- 29:56Speaker 4: They're trying to get laughter out of you and Dan.
- 29:58Speaker 1: Yes, correct.
- 29:59Speaker 3: Like, that's the– they're trying to get, oh, my God,
- 30:02Speaker 3: that was fantastic. You know, the way that– the first
- 30:06Speaker 3: time you heard fake Placido Domingo or fake Pavarotti or,
- 30:11Speaker 3: you know, the fake Cody became that, like, you know,
- 30:13Speaker 3: you were looking for this seal of approval from the
- 30:16Speaker 3: judges who were harsh judges, by the way.
- 30:19Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 30:20Speaker 3: Like there was nothing more fun than shitting on a
- 30:23Speaker 3: caller who you knew had spent 20 minutes writing a
- 30:26Speaker 3: song that just blew.
- 30:27Speaker 1: Yes.
- 30:28Speaker 6: I'm not certain which was more fun was shitting on
- 30:30Speaker 6: a caller who worked that hard or an actual good song.
- 30:33Speaker 7: You know?
- 30:34Speaker 4: Fun for us and fun for the listeners.
- 30:36Speaker 3: But, man, it was like this seal of approval. If
- 30:38Speaker 3: you got the nod from Dan and Stu Gatz, it
- 30:41Speaker 3: was a big deal. Greg Cody spawned Fake Cody. He
- 30:46Speaker 3: also spawned, and I couldn't find anything worth playing, but
- 30:49Speaker 3: he spawned.
- 30:50Speaker 4: John Bon Cody.
- 30:51Speaker 3: It was a couple of attempts from somebody that that's
- 30:55Speaker 3: one of those things where.
- 30:56Speaker 4: Better name than actual delivery.
- 31:00Speaker 2: Great idea, bad execution, yes.
- 31:02Speaker 3: Yes, you'd see it up on the call screen, John Boncote,
- 31:05Speaker 3: you go to it, and it was just, it didn't
- 31:07Speaker 3: do well.
- 31:08Speaker 2: You saw so much hope.
- 31:10Speaker 6: And then such disappointment when we brought him on, yes.
- 31:13Speaker 3: Sometimes the packaging is just so much better than the product.
- 31:18Speaker 3: But it also spawned Black Cody. Black Cody, and here
- 31:23Speaker 3: is a sample of Black Cody's work.
- 31:25Speaker 9: The heat is one. It's 3-2 now. I'm happier than
- 31:30Speaker 9: Michael Jackson in a boys camp. Van Gundy's smart, but
- 31:35Speaker 9: he looks like Ron Jeremy. Now Larry Brown is down.
- 31:40Speaker 9: Who needs a maid when you got a butler?
- 31:43Speaker 13: Damon Jones is the three kings. Shaq is a beast.
- 31:49Speaker 13: We'll feed in Motown.
- 31:51Speaker 10: Thanks, Rasheed.
- 31:53Speaker 13: We love the points.
- 31:55Speaker 9: I saw you kneeling down, the patch in your hair.
- 31:58Speaker 1: You need to see Dr.
- 32:00Speaker 13: Shapiro. Weight is hurt, but he'll be back. He'll be
- 32:06Speaker 13: back in a juju. When the Pistons get beat and
- 32:11Speaker 13: the Heat prevail, Charles Barkley will finally have his baby. Because,
- 32:17Speaker 13: because it's the Heat.
- 32:25Speaker 2: Very nice effort.
- 32:26Speaker 9: Go, Minnie!
- 32:28Speaker 2: Very nice effort, Black Cody.
- 32:32Speaker 3: I mean, just really good stuff. So that's our salute
- 32:35Speaker 3: to Greg Cody. And again, we'll do another podcast where
- 32:38Speaker 3: we celebrate more of Greg Cody's actual songs. But what
- 32:42Speaker 3: a career he had with the Miami Herald. We wish
- 32:45Speaker 3: him well in his future endeavors.
- 32:47Speaker 2: Should we do that second episode with Greg Cody? That
- 32:49Speaker 2: would be nice.
- 32:50Speaker 4: Can we? Well, I don't know.
- 32:55Speaker 3: Cody once invited me on his podcast, The Great Cody Show.
- 32:58Speaker 4: This was several years ago.
- 33:00Speaker 1: Yes.
- 33:01Speaker 3: And I said, are you sure that Dan's not going
- 33:03Speaker 3: to get pissed at you for having me on?
- 33:05Speaker 1: Right.
- 33:07Speaker 4: And then I never heard from him again.
- 33:09Speaker 3: So I think, I don't think Greg Cody thought about it.
- 33:13Speaker 3: And then he probably shot Dan a text and said, Hey, if, uh,
- 33:16Speaker 3: if I have Hawk on the podcast, would that bother you?
- 33:19Speaker 4: I'm guessing the response wasn't very positive.
- 33:22Speaker 3: And I never, I believe if I checked my messages,
- 33:25Speaker 3: that's the last text that I ever got from Greg
- 33:28Speaker 3: Cody was me saying to him, are you sure it's
- 33:31Speaker 3: not going to piss off Dan?
- 33:33Speaker 2: Yes. And now we're asking him to come on a
- 33:34Speaker 2: show with both me and you.
- 33:37Speaker 4: Let's wait until the bobblehead comes out.
- 33:39Speaker 1: Oh, yes, yes. Big stories, right?
- 33:41Speaker 8: Feels like the rare non-answer answer.
- 33:44Speaker 2: Never answer answer.
- 33:45Speaker 1: Yes.
- 33:47Speaker 3: I'm trying to see if I have a saved conversation
- 33:51Speaker 3: with Greg Cody.
- 33:53Speaker 6: I congratulated him. I told him he's on my Mount
- 33:56Speaker 6: Rushmore list. of South Florida sports writers.
