- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Not So Fast with Andrew Perloff and Paul Pabst,
- 0:05Speaker 1: where two longtime friends challenge each other on the biggest
- 0:08Speaker 1: sports stories of the day. Here's Andrew Perloff and Paul Pabst.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Not so fast, my friends. Welcome to Not So Fast.
- 0:17Speaker 2: I'm Andrew Perloff. He's Paul Pabst. All right, Paul, we're
- 0:20Speaker 2: weeding out some playoff teams. The MLB playoffs are getting serious.
- 0:23Speaker 3: Yeah, three teams going home. Guardians, White Sox later today.
- 0:27Speaker 3: John Fant of NBC Sports will join us later today. Eagles,
- 0:30Speaker 3: I'm going to ask you about your Eagles. Are they
- 0:32Speaker 3: fire sale or is it just a trade? And Thursday
- 0:34Speaker 3: Night Football, Bucs at Cowboys. A lot to get to today, bro.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Yeah, we had a big argument before the show. How
- 0:39Speaker 2: do we keep it positive and focus on the teams
- 0:41Speaker 2: that are advancing? But you can't help but wonder about
- 0:43Speaker 2: the Yankees.
- 0:44Speaker 3: Yeah, the future of teams that lose, that's the big topic.
- 0:46Speaker 3: Because the teams that are winning, we'll talk about them
- 0:48Speaker 3: the rest of the week.
- 0:48Speaker 2: But not just teams that lose. Specifically the Yankees. The
- 0:52Speaker 2: Yankees losing, haven't won a World Series since 2009. Obviously
- 0:55Speaker 2: they spent a lot in the history of... I just
- 0:58Speaker 2: don't quite understand why they can't get over the hump.
- 1:01Speaker 3: The Yankees have won one World Series in the past
- 1:03Speaker 3: 25 years. For many franchises, you'd sign up for that. Like,
- 1:06Speaker 3: one out of 25? Sign me up. But I think
- 1:08Speaker 3: it's time, and I'm not hot-taking here, for Aaron Boone
- 1:11Speaker 3: to go. It's almost like a situation where he's had
- 1:13Speaker 3: eight seasons, going on nine seasons, where he hasn't made
- 1:16Speaker 3: them better. And they spend. It feels like almost anybody
- 1:20Speaker 3: with this roster could pull this off. Look, loss, loss, loss.
- 1:23Speaker 3: Doesn't really matter what you put up there. They've had
- 1:25Speaker 3: Aaron Judge. They've spent on different people. And you can't
- 1:27Speaker 3: blame injuries when you have that type of roster. It
- 1:31Speaker 3: might be a firing, not personal, but for the sake
- 1:34Speaker 3: of just shaking things up.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, listen, he's a good employee. It's an
- 1:38Speaker 2: analytics run team and he does what the analytics people want.
- 1:40Speaker 3: What does that mean, analytics run?
- 1:42Speaker 2: So there's somebody, a nerd in the front office, they're
- 1:45Speaker 2: always called nerds in baseball, who looks at the matchups
- 1:48Speaker 2: and says, this is what you should do as a manager,
- 1:50Speaker 2: and Boone is taking direction.
- 1:51Speaker 3: So he is a good employee following the plan of
- 1:53Speaker 3: the franchise.
- 1:54Speaker 2: And he gets along with everyone, and he keeps the
- 1:56Speaker 2: players happy. He's a players coach. So in New York,
- 1:58Speaker 2: that's a big deal, because there's some big salaries, some
- 2:01Speaker 2: big egos, and Boone seems to be able to work
- 2:03Speaker 2: with them.
- 2:03Speaker 3: So I have a theory on the Yankees and why
- 2:05Speaker 3: Aaron Boone won't get fired. If Brian Cashman, the longtime
- 2:08Speaker 3: GM of the Yankees, fires Aaron Boone, he's next. Because
- 2:12Speaker 3: you get one firing of a manager, or maybe two,
- 2:14Speaker 3: or many if you're Cashman. But if you fire him
- 2:18Speaker 3: and they don't do better, you're next.
- 2:20Speaker 2: Yeah, but why don't they fire Brian Cashman?
- 2:22Speaker 3: He seems like a meritist there. It's like you walk
- 2:25Speaker 3: in his office, there's rings and trophies all over the place.
- 2:27Speaker 3: Not in a long time, though.
- 2:29Speaker 2: You know, Scott Messina, our producer, had a good point.
- 2:31Speaker 2: Sometimes just changing it up can do wonders. Tom Thibodeau
- 2:35Speaker 2: was fine with the Knicks, but then they get rid
- 2:37Speaker 2: of him, and boom, they win a title.
- 2:38Speaker 3: And that's the one that worked out. You can make
- 2:40Speaker 3: the case, and I think New York fans will understand.
- 2:42Speaker 3: Loyalty to Boone, those days are over.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I think New York fans want Boone gone.
- 2:48Speaker 2: But the team, and one more thing, I said this
- 2:50Speaker 2: earlier in the week, they're a family-run team. They're not
- 2:52Speaker 2: a corporate team. I think a lot of corporate-run teams
- 2:54Speaker 2: would have been five years ago gotten rid of Boone.
- 2:56Speaker 3: Because they had no loyalty to him. But the Yankees
- 2:58Speaker 3: hit 130 in the division series. Nobody showed up. Judge
- 3:02Speaker 3: actually didn't show up. And the bigger picture is, you know,
- 3:05Speaker 3: if you look at Aaron Judge, he's 34 years old.
- 3:07Speaker 2: I know.
- 3:08Speaker 3: This guy, and I think Dan said it earlier, he
- 3:10Speaker 3: may exit his career in four or five years without
- 3:13Speaker 3: a World Series victory. And you can't be an all-time great.
- 3:16Speaker 3: It really is akin to being a first ballot Hall
- 3:19Speaker 3: of Famer or like at a quarterback without a ring.
- 3:21Speaker 2: No, I totally disagree with that. Barry Bonds is the
- 3:25Speaker 2: greatest of all time.
- 3:25Speaker 3: Barry Bonds was a giant. He wasn't a Yankee. A
- 3:28Speaker 3: Yankee retiring. Oh, I really think that's a caveat here.
- 3:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:32Speaker 3: The Yankees put everything in place to win. And Aaron
- 3:34Speaker 3: Judge has done his part. But I think in the playoffs.
- 3:37Speaker 3: I think he's a career 235 hitter.
- 3:38Speaker 2: No, he obviously had that huge error a couple years ago.
- 3:41Speaker 2: But I disagree with that. Baseball, we know one star
- 3:44Speaker 2: cannot win a World Series. That's been proven time and
- 3:46Speaker 2: time again. It's not quarterback.
- 3:47Speaker 4: Right.
- 3:48Speaker 2: Quarterback's different. And Aaron Judge can only do so much.
- 3:51Speaker 2: So I don't quite buy that. I think Aaron Judge,
- 3:53Speaker 2: because of the home runs, is still going as an
- 3:55Speaker 2: all-time great. But you're saying because he's a Yankee— Yes,
- 3:58Speaker 2: you have a different standard.
- 3:59Speaker 3: They are really— Lakers, Yankees, you get a different judgment.
- 4:03Speaker 2: All right, I will buy that.
- 4:04Speaker 3: Here's what's going to bother Yankees fans even more. You
- 4:06Speaker 3: guys spend like $ 300 million a year. Cleveland, Chicago, and
- 4:09Speaker 3: Tampa Bay are the remaining teams in the AL. All
- 4:11Speaker 3: three organizations are in the bottom four of baseball in
- 4:14Speaker 3: team payroll. Sox are 27th, Tampa's 28th, Cleveland's 29th. Now,
- 4:19Speaker 3: it's an anomaly. Those things aren't always sustainable. But that said, Tampa...
- 4:23Speaker 3: They've been in the playoffs for the past six years.
- 4:26Speaker 3: They're not occasional playoff teams. So you can win or
- 4:30Speaker 3: come close to winning without spending in baseball.
- 4:32Speaker 2: But you can't win a title.
- 4:33Speaker 3: You probably can't win a title.
- 4:35Speaker 2: You can't win a title.
- 4:36Speaker 3: Diamondbacks?
- 4:37Speaker 2: Diamondbacks?
- 4:38Speaker 3: That's an outlier. It's an outlier.
- 4:40Speaker 2: The biggest outlier was the 03 Marlins. That was 2001, right? Sorry,
- 4:44Speaker 2: Scott was in my ear. That was 26 years ago.
- 4:47Speaker 2: Now it's either a top five team or a very,
- 4:50Speaker 2: very least. I have the numbers here. The 2017 Astros
- 4:54Speaker 2: were 17th. That's the lowest in the modern era. And
- 4:57Speaker 2: they were young. They were all about to get paid.
- 4:59Speaker 3: But I think Cleveland, Chicago, and Tampa, they're going to
- 5:01Speaker 3: consume each other over the next week or so. One
- 5:03Speaker 3: of them would have to get past the Dodgers or
- 5:05Speaker 3: the Brewers, whoever gets there.
- 5:07Speaker 2: So it will be one team coming out of the
- 5:10Speaker 2: AL with a low payroll. But odds are, if you're
- 5:12Speaker 2: betting on that, you pick the high payroll team out
- 5:15Speaker 2: of the NL, and that's probably the dollar.
- 5:16Speaker 3: Now, should we do the argument we were doing this
- 5:18Speaker 3: morning before we even got here? I said this is
- 5:20Speaker 3: great storyline, maybe not great for baseball. If a Cleveland,
- 5:23Speaker 3: a Chicago, or a Tampa Bay wins a World Series,
- 5:26Speaker 3: especially Cleveland, look at the Indians to the Guardians. They're
- 5:29Speaker 3: a feel-good story from the standpoint of the history of
- 5:31Speaker 3: the franchise. Chicago White Sox are feel-good from what they lost.
- 5:35Speaker 3: Tampa is kind of in that middle ground, and you're
- 5:37Speaker 3: saying this is horrible for baseball.
- 5:38Speaker 2: Okay, I'll give you a choice. You get Shohei Ohtani
- 5:41Speaker 2: and the Dodgers winning the World Series, or you get
- 5:44Speaker 2: Cleveland or Chicago winning the World Series. Which do you take?
- 5:46Speaker 3: I want the White Sox or Cleveland over Shohei Ohtani
- 5:50Speaker 3: and the Dodgers, toppling a giant. That's what you need.
- 5:52Speaker 3: You need the Hoosiers storyline. Now, that's extreme, and I
- 5:55Speaker 3: know what you're saying. You're saying baseball does not want
- 5:58Speaker 3: a lower payroll team in it.
- 5:59Speaker 2: It's mean, but it's reality. If you have Milwaukee and
- 6:02Speaker 2: the White Sox and you're about to head into a lockout,
- 6:05Speaker 2: it's what I call a disaster. But I think a
- 6:07Speaker 2: bigger problem is you don't have stars. Remember the lockout
- 6:09Speaker 2: in the 90s? Guess who brought baseball back? One man,
- 6:12Speaker 2: Ken Griffey Jr. You had a star. Who are the
- 6:15Speaker 2: superstars that are carrying it now? You have great pitchers,
- 6:18Speaker 2: but Shohei is not himself. Aaron Judge is out. I'm
- 6:21Speaker 2: not really sure. You go Milwaukee, Chicago, Cleveland. There's not
- 6:24Speaker 2: one guy who's going to carry the sport other than Shelly.
- 6:27Speaker 3: The Guardians have very few stars, at least breakout stars.
- 6:30Speaker 3: Tampa has no stars. And the White Sox, their only
- 6:33Speaker 3: stars are their fan base, literally the Pope and President Obama.
- 6:36Speaker 2: Oh, you got the Pope.
- 6:37Speaker 3: That's their hook.
- 6:38Speaker 2: Yeah, but still, I mean, baseball does have this labor
- 6:40Speaker 2: issue looming over it. And listen, the problem of the
- 6:43Speaker 2: World Series is very simple. The NFL is going against it.
- 6:47Speaker 2: So you really need the Dodgers. But that being said, yeah,
- 6:50Speaker 2: I love the story and I love the Cinderella, but
- 6:53Speaker 2: I kind of want the Dodgers and I'm sorry. So
- 6:55Speaker 2: Brewers would be great. Miz is great. But after that,
- 6:58Speaker 2: I'm not sure that they carry the audience.
- 6:59Speaker 3: Okay, you got Dodgers, Brewers, and LCS. This is very
- 7:02Speaker 3: good for baseball. You got the Miz in game one rested.
- 7:05Speaker 3: Probably Yamamoto in game one. National TV, that's a primetime NLCS.
- 7:10Speaker 2: Yeah, and then I look back at the numbers from
- 7:12Speaker 2: last year's NLCS. I know. Milwaukee scored four runs in
- 7:16Speaker 2: four games, Paul. They scored one run in every game.
- 7:19Speaker 2: It was a domination. Now, I don't know if the
- 7:21Speaker 2: Dodgers are as good as they were last year. Obviously,
- 7:24Speaker 2: Shohei is a major issue for them.
- 7:25Speaker 3: Home field for the Brewers?
- 7:27Speaker 2: So I'm not sure it matters. It's hard to predict.
- 7:29Speaker 2: I don't think either team is going to score a
- 7:31Speaker 2: lot of runs. It doesn't seem like anyone's scoring runs.
- 7:33Speaker 2: That's another thing. Yeah.
- 7:35Speaker 3: Almost every team has had one of those 0-4 games
- 7:37Speaker 3: with 11 men left on base. But at least from
- 7:40Speaker 3: an anticipation standpoint, this is a great matchup.
- 7:43Speaker 2: Yes, it is 1-2, but I'm wary of disappointment. And
- 7:46Speaker 2: I've got to be honest, I want to see more offense.
- 7:48Speaker 2: I'm being totally shallow here. Can the Dodgers' bats wake up?
- 7:51Speaker 2: Can the Brewers' hit? I don't know. The first game,
- 7:55Speaker 2: watching Miz go 1-0-3 against that lineup is going to
- 7:57Speaker 2: be a lot of fun.
- 7:58Speaker 3: I hope Otani's a little healthier for facing the Miz.
- 8:00Speaker 3: All right, let's get to some football. We've got Thursday
- 8:02Speaker 3: Night Football, Bucs at Cowboys. We're going to hit that later.
- 8:05Speaker 3: The Eagles, right before we got off air yesterday, we
- 8:07Speaker 3: found out Cam Juergens, who was a very good offensive lineman,
- 8:10Speaker 3: a center for the Eagles.
- 8:11Speaker 2: Two-time Pro Bowler.
- 8:12Speaker 3: Two-time Pro Bowler, but expendable. Let me ask you this question.
- 8:15Speaker 3: They trade him to Baltimore. Great pickup for Baltimore who
- 8:19Speaker 3: lost a center. Is this a pure fire sale that
- 8:22Speaker 3: we have over the next few weeks with the Eagles,
- 8:24Speaker 3: or is it more just a reactionary move?
- 8:26Speaker 2: It's a combo. It is a bit of a fire sale,
- 8:28Speaker 2: but I think Howie Roseman, the Eagles GM, could not
- 8:31Speaker 2: believe that the Baltimore Ravens were going to give up
- 8:33Speaker 2: a second-round pick for Cam Juergens.
- 8:35Speaker 3: That's expensive.
- 8:36Speaker 2: It's a shock. It's a shock. Giving up the fifth-round pick? Questionable.
- 8:40Speaker 2: Giving up a second-round pick? Amazing. Cam Juergens has had
- 8:44Speaker 2: major health issues. He's got a back problem. He's in
- 8:47Speaker 2: a concussion protocol. He is not the same player that
- 8:49Speaker 2: won two Pro Bowlers. The Eagles know that. The Ravens
- 8:52Speaker 2: make no sense, Paul. Can I go back a little bit? Yes.
- 8:55Speaker 2: They trade for Max Crosby. They gave him way too much.
- 8:57Speaker 2: Two first round plays.
- 8:58Speaker 3: That didn't work out.
- 8:59Speaker 2: He doesn't pass the physical. Then they get Trey Hendrickson,
- 9:02Speaker 2: who's actually older than Max Crosby. Max Crosby's still awesome,
- 9:05Speaker 2: so they kind of miss Crosby. Then somehow Cam Juergens
- 9:08Speaker 2: passes a physical, and he has not played well at
- 9:11Speaker 2: all for Philly. The Ravens are odd right now.
- 9:14Speaker 3: Yes, and the Ravens, I still don't know what happened
- 9:16Speaker 3: there with that physical. Max Crosby clearly could play football.
- 9:19Speaker 3: I think they... I think they had their doctor tank
- 9:20Speaker 3: the physical so they could redo the Crosby trade. And
- 9:23Speaker 3: then trading for a center. I actually like them trading
- 9:25Speaker 3: for a center. You know what they should have done?
- 9:27Speaker 3: Keep the center you had in Lindenball last year and
- 9:29Speaker 3: not let him out of the building.
- 9:30Speaker 2: I know. We're playing Monday morning quarterback with the Ravens.
- 9:32Speaker 2: It's odd. Their whole team building strategy is unusual. It
- 9:36Speaker 2: might work, by the way. They'll be much better with
- 9:38Speaker 2: a center.
- 9:39Speaker 3: You're saying the Eagles maybe weren't looking to trade him.
- 9:41Speaker 3: They may be looking to shop and got way more
- 9:43Speaker 3: than they asked for.
- 9:44Speaker 2: Well, I think Howie saw an opportunity. He said that
- 9:47Speaker 2: he talks to Eric DaCosta, the Ravens GM, all the time.
- 9:50Speaker 2: And clearly the Ravens have a needed center. Their line
- 9:52Speaker 2: is a mess right now. So I think Howie Roseman
- 9:55Speaker 2: is taking advantage. I heard an interesting caveat. So this
- 9:58Speaker 2: is a second round pick and two years. Most teams
- 10:01Speaker 2: devalue that. The Eagles do not devalue that because Howie
- 10:05Speaker 2: Roseman knows that he is safe in his job. He
- 10:07Speaker 2: doesn't care if it's two years, three years, four years.
- 10:10Speaker 2: So Howie Roseman knows that that is going to be
- 10:12Speaker 2: a second round pick. And he'll be able to build
- 10:13Speaker 2: around it. So it's really smart.
- 10:15Speaker 3: So a lot of people reacting yesterday. If they're having
- 10:17Speaker 3: a fire sale, the Eagles, where does Saquon Barkley fit
- 10:19Speaker 3: in this? Let's say in two weeks, I think the
- 10:21Speaker 3: trade deadline is November 7th. Let's say in two weeks,
- 10:24Speaker 3: Saquon is healthy and playing good football. Do they shop him?
- 10:27Speaker 3: Do they take calls?
- 10:28Speaker 2: It's hard to trade a running back. People do not
- 10:30Speaker 2: want running backs.
- 10:31Speaker 3: What about like the Houston Texans who have no running backs?
- 10:34Speaker 2: Yeah, that'd be great. But they're going to give up
- 10:35Speaker 2: what for Saquon Barkley? Two twos. That'd be the richest
- 10:40Speaker 2: running back trade maybe of all time. You can't trade
- 10:42Speaker 2: for a running back. It's a bizarre... CMC, in his prime,
- 10:46Speaker 2: three years younger than Saquon Barkley, went for one second
- 10:49Speaker 2: round pick. Okay, fair enough. Which, you know, you look
- 10:51Speaker 2: back at it, that was the move that made San
- 10:53Speaker 2: Francisco elite. I would want the Eagles to trade Saquon
- 10:56Speaker 2: because he has no, really, Super Bowl future with him.
- 10:58Speaker 2: He's going to be 30. But I just don't think
- 11:01Speaker 2: that there's going to be an offer.
- 11:02Speaker 3: No, we're going to break here. But the trade deadline
- 11:04Speaker 3: thing I'm most curious about is the Eagles with wide receivers.
- 11:07Speaker 3: They have draft capital. They have an extra third-round pick.
- 11:10Speaker 3: Do they do something bigger than Tyreek Hill?
- 11:13Speaker 2: You mean the Chiefs? Chiefs, yeah. Oh, yeah, Chiefs, yeah.
- 11:17Speaker 2: I know you want Nico Collins. Yeah, no doubt you
- 11:19Speaker 2: want Nico Collins. We'll get to that next. We have
- 11:21Speaker 2: a lot coming up on Not So Fast, including a
- 11:24Speaker 2: weather update that I am really into for college football
- 11:27Speaker 2: this weekend. I love saying the name of the storm.
- 11:30Speaker 2: Tune in to hear that. That's next, Not So Fast.
- 11:33Speaker 3: Yeah, that's the original storm name coming.
- 11:35Speaker 2: Yeah, this is fun. No, it's not fun. I hope
- 11:38Speaker 2: everyone's okay.
- 11:39Speaker 3: Yes, but Cantori may be on property.
- 11:40Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm curious about the game.
- 11:44Speaker 3: I can't tour either. Okay, Pearl, here we go. Midday pick-me-up.
- 11:49Speaker 3: Midday pick-me-up for one fan base, not so much the other.
- 11:52Speaker 3: Manny Machado, moon ball here. Looks like it's going out.
- 11:55Speaker 3: This will tie it up. No, not so fast.
- 11:58Speaker 2: All right.
- 11:59Speaker 3: Garrett Mitchell. When he robbed him a home run, he
- 12:02Speaker 3: didn't even leave his feet.
- 12:03Speaker 2: You know, I've said many times my favorite play in
- 12:05Speaker 2: baseball is robbing a home run. I'm not even calling
- 12:07Speaker 2: that a robbing home run. I'm calling that catching a
- 12:09Speaker 2: fly ball.
- 12:10Speaker 3: We have to see that again. I did some research.
- 12:12Speaker 3: I went to Padres.com, which is different websites depending on
- 12:15Speaker 3: what you type up. And I think the fence is
- 12:18Speaker 3: seven feet high. Look at this.
- 12:21Speaker 2: Yeah, no, that was a great play. But I expected more.
- 12:25Speaker 2: When you see the headline, robbing a home run, you
- 12:28Speaker 2: expect more.
- 12:29Speaker 3: Now, would that have been fan interference if they put
- 12:31Speaker 3: their hand over the ball? And I think that may
- 12:33Speaker 3: have been ruled a home run.
- 12:35Speaker 2: Yeah, because of how low the fence is. By the way,
- 12:38Speaker 2: I love unusual fences and unusual ballparks. That's the best
- 12:42Speaker 2: part of baseball is that it's not cookie cutter.
- 12:44Speaker 3: What about the Houston Astros a few years ago? Remember
- 12:45Speaker 3: they had that thing that went upwards and top of
- 12:47Speaker 3: the trop?
- 12:48Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 12:49Speaker 3: And people got hurt.
- 12:50Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. I still loved it. That was terrible. That's
- 12:52Speaker 2: the best part of it.
- 12:53Speaker 3: All right, it's time for some warm takes. Baseball, football,
- 12:55Speaker 3: it gets you warm for a couple warm takes. I'm
- 12:57Speaker 3: going to go first, and this one's really obvious, but
- 12:59Speaker 3: I wanted to re-hit this one. Watching Shoei Ohtani last
- 13:02Speaker 3: night when he got up to bat, I know he's
- 13:03Speaker 3: been scuffling, as they say in baseball lately, not hitting
- 13:06Speaker 3: that well. But I was just about to go and
- 13:08Speaker 3: get myself a freshie, and Ohtani came up to bat.
- 13:10Speaker 3: And I turned around, sat down, and watched his entire at-bat.
- 13:14Speaker 3: There's not that many people will do that in baseball
- 13:15Speaker 3: or any sports. And we have a term for it
- 13:18Speaker 3: here on the DP Show and Not So Fast. It's
- 13:19Speaker 3: called BCW. Bathroom can wait or beer can wait. There
- 13:23Speaker 3: are certain athletes where they're coming up to bat, they
- 13:25Speaker 3: come into the game, you sit down and you watch
- 13:28Speaker 3: that bat because something may happen and something usually does happen.
- 13:31Speaker 3: And I know Otani's hurt, but he is first team BCW.
- 13:34Speaker 3: I remember back in the day, just to go another sport,
- 13:37Speaker 3: when Deion Sanders was coming back for a punt return
- 13:40Speaker 3: or a kick return, especially punt returns, and usually, hey,
- 13:43Speaker 3: it's a punt, I'm going to go get a beer,
- 13:44Speaker 3: I'm going to go to the bathroom. No, Deion's returning
- 13:46Speaker 3: the punt. There's different guys like that. Devin Hester in football.
- 13:50Speaker 3: Barry Bonds back in the day. BCW, Bathroom Can Wait,
- 13:53Speaker 3: and Otani, even though he's not hitting like he usually is,
- 13:56Speaker 3: his first team, BCW.
- 13:57Speaker 2: I remember being at Yankee Stadium, and I was getting
- 14:00Speaker 2: a beer or something. People started running into the stadium saying,
- 14:03Speaker 2: he's up, he's up, because they were all there to
- 14:05Speaker 2: see Ken Griffey Jr. play. That is the ultimate BCW.
- 14:08Speaker 2: Barry Bonds is the other name that jumped to mind.
- 14:10Speaker 3: Griffey's a great one. When I lived in New York City,
- 14:12Speaker 3: I got Yankees tickets once, and it was to see
- 14:14Speaker 3: the Mariners. I was like, oh, to see Griffey? And
- 14:16Speaker 3: we all had to sit right behind Griffey. The stands
- 14:19Speaker 3: were so packed. and we're chanting to Griffey, getting his attention,
- 14:21Speaker 3: but you went to the park to see Griffey, not
- 14:24Speaker 3: the Yankees.
- 14:24Speaker 2: Aaron Judge, you would, I think, as a BCW player,
- 14:27Speaker 2: when he's healthy. Shohei is the ultimate one, though. I
- 14:30Speaker 2: love that. Okay, I'm going to the NFL for my
- 14:32Speaker 2: warm take. We can read the writing on the wall
- 14:35Speaker 2: here in Philadelphia. Everybody knows what's happening. Let's not beat
- 14:37Speaker 2: around the bush. Jalen Hurts is on his way out.
- 14:40Speaker 2: How many signs do we need from GM Howie Roseman?
- 14:44Speaker 2: The offensive line lost 40% of its starters this week,
- 14:46Speaker 2: obviously with the Cam Juergens trade and Lane Johnson retiring.
- 14:50Speaker 2: Jalen Hurts without an offensive line is not good. It
- 14:54Speaker 2: was bizarre. Against the Rams last week, the blitz was
- 14:57Speaker 2: coming up. Even a casual fan could see the blitz
- 14:59Speaker 2: was headed his way. He seemed to not notice it.
- 15:02Speaker 2: Everything needs to be working perfect in Philly for Jalen
- 15:05Speaker 2: Hurts to excel. And I don't think they can keep
- 15:07Speaker 2: going like this because the rest of the team is
- 15:10Speaker 2: getting old or getting too expensive. So, Jalen Hurts, you
- 15:13Speaker 2: can get out after 2027, Paul. There's a way to
- 15:16Speaker 2: do it without too much pain. So there's one more season.
- 15:19Speaker 2: And then in 2028, the Eagles have two first-round picks
- 15:22Speaker 2: and two second-round picks. So they can do two things.
- 15:24Speaker 2: They can either draft a guy in the second round
- 15:26Speaker 2: in a quarterback-rich draft next year, develop him, or they
- 15:30Speaker 2: can wait until 2028 and see where the chips fall. Now, remember...
- 15:34Speaker 2: This is a team that just signed Carson Wentz to
- 15:37Speaker 2: a $ 128 million deal, then 10 months later drafted Jalen
- 15:41Speaker 2: Hurts in the second round. They said it was to
- 15:43Speaker 2: be a backup, but secretly in the building, they knew
- 15:46Speaker 2: there was something off with Carson Wentz. So they are
- 15:49Speaker 2: not afraid to move on.
- 15:50Speaker 3: Yeah, I think I'm probably objective about this. I'm not
- 15:52Speaker 3: an Eagles fan or detractor, but I think we've seen
- 15:54Speaker 3: Jalen Hurts' best work. And he has to have a
- 15:56Speaker 3: good line because he's a great player, but he's not
- 15:58Speaker 3: a great passer. He never was a great passer.
- 16:00Speaker 2: No.
- 16:00Speaker 3: He does feel like a guy at times you could
- 16:03Speaker 3: count on in clutch situations. What bothers me is that
- 16:05Speaker 3: he doesn't run the ball anymore. And there was a
- 16:07Speaker 3: time a long time ago, like four years ago, where
- 16:09Speaker 3: he was a serious threat. I compared him yesterday to
- 16:12Speaker 3: Peek McNabb, where he's built like a big running back,
- 16:16Speaker 3: and he just doesn't run. Three years ago, he attempted
- 16:19Speaker 3: 10 runs per game. Now he's down to three.
- 16:21Speaker 2: Oh, I know.
- 16:22Speaker 3: And you know, and it's got to be frustrating. If
- 16:24Speaker 3: you remember Peek Cam Newton, the threat of Cam's running
- 16:27Speaker 3: was bigger than his passing. And I think with Jalen Hurts,
- 16:30Speaker 3: He either has to be reminded of this, but I
- 16:33Speaker 3: don't know how you tell someone to run.
- 16:35Speaker 2: I think it's a big issue in that building. I
- 16:37Speaker 2: think even the coaches and the GM, I think they
- 16:39Speaker 2: want him to run more, and he does not want to.
- 16:41Speaker 2: I'm not sure. He seems a bit stubborn. I don't
- 16:43Speaker 2: know Jalen Hurts. No one really knows him, but he
- 16:45Speaker 2: seems like when he decides he's going to play a
- 16:48Speaker 2: certain way, he will not change.
- 16:49Speaker 3: And I do like what you're saying about Howie Roseman,
- 16:51Speaker 3: the GM of the Eagles, seeing this future and saying, like,
- 16:53Speaker 3: let's get our ducks in a row. Let's get our
- 16:55Speaker 3: draft picks in a row for the days when it's
- 16:57Speaker 3: time to pull the Band-Aid, because right now, You can't
- 16:59Speaker 3: bench Hurts. He's got too much.
- 17:01Speaker 1: In the pitch.
- 17:02Speaker 2: I mean, he's still got good games.
- 17:03Speaker 3: Right, but they have guys. I would say, though, he's
- 17:06Speaker 3: safe for now, but not safe if they miss the playoffs.
- 17:09Speaker 2: I will say one thing about him. He is not
- 17:11Speaker 2: a quarterback I would want to face in the Super Bowl.
- 17:14Speaker 1: No.
- 17:14Speaker 2: He's been awesome in two Super Bowls. He has great games,
- 17:17Speaker 2: and he's going to go down as an Eagles legend.
- 17:19Speaker 2: But I think it's getting toward the end.
- 17:21Speaker 3: We'll stay with the Eagles for a second. This is
- 17:22Speaker 3: my next warm take. I think everyone was really shocked
- 17:24Speaker 3: the other day when Eagles future Hall of Fame lineman
- 17:27Speaker 3: Lane Johnson retired suddenly. The details are kind of murky,
- 17:30Speaker 3: personal issues, mental health things. It was shocking, and we
- 17:34Speaker 3: don't really know that much more today than we did.
- 17:36Speaker 3: And we were trying to talk about the football side
- 17:38Speaker 3: of this, what it does to the Eagles, because we
- 17:40Speaker 3: don't know what Lane Johnson is going through. Again, very
- 17:43Speaker 3: few details. Yesterday, Stephen A. Smith took a bit of
- 17:46Speaker 3: a cheap shot, more than a bit of a cheap shot,
- 17:48Speaker 3: and he got lit up, deservedly so. He basically said
- 17:51Speaker 3: that Lane Johnson calls it quits now. He couldn't have
- 17:53Speaker 3: done it before the season. Now he uses air quotes
- 17:55Speaker 3: of mental health as the thing. You know, Stephen A.
- 17:58Speaker 3: Smith got ripped, and hopefully he learns from this, because
- 18:01Speaker 3: we think that athletes, because they have money, fame, success,
- 18:04Speaker 3: that they've got everything. We met Lane Johnson once. We
- 18:06Speaker 3: had him on the Dan Patrick Show. Seems like a
- 18:08Speaker 3: super cool guy. That doesn't mean we know Lane Johnson,
- 18:10Speaker 3: because we met him for 12 minutes on the Dan
- 18:12Speaker 3: Patrick Show. We have no idea what they're going through.
- 18:15Speaker 3: I think it's fair to critique athletes with physical issues.
- 18:18Speaker 3: Like if a guy doesn't play and you're like, oh,
- 18:20Speaker 3: why isn't Puka Nakua back? Isn't his hamstring okay? Yeah,
- 18:24Speaker 3: that's okay. That's kind of what we do, the physicality
- 18:26Speaker 3: of it. But we have no idea. And in the
- 18:29Speaker 3: hot take world of social media, being flippant about an
- 18:32Speaker 3: ankle injury, that's one thing. Being flippant about mental health,
- 18:34Speaker 3: that's a complete other. Because we've seen guys with mental
- 18:37Speaker 3: health issues and it goes to a dark place or
- 18:40Speaker 3: a really bad result. Right now, whatever Lane Johnson's doing,
- 18:43Speaker 3: great for him. don't know, and let him deal with it.
- 18:46Speaker 3: But if you get flippant about people's mental health, people
- 18:48Speaker 3: are going to call you out, and deservedly so.
- 18:50Speaker 2: Yeah, no notes. I totally agree. Listen, Lane Johnson announced
- 18:55Speaker 2: he was going to retire anyway. You knew something was off.
- 18:59Speaker 2: If you're an Eagles fan, this was not a surprise
- 19:02Speaker 2: at all.
- 19:02Speaker 3: Right, and this isn't 1983 where you say, tape it up,
- 19:05Speaker 3: go run a lap. This isn't your dad's NFL anymore.
- 19:08Speaker 3: There's real issues here, and whatever Lane Johnson's dealing with,
- 19:11Speaker 3: a cheap shot on national TV, it's lazy. And it's
- 19:15Speaker 3: the opposite of what people want to hear. Clearly, you
- 19:17Speaker 3: could say like, hey, play through this injury, play through this.
- 19:20Speaker 3: But mental health is not a play through situation.
- 19:22Speaker 2: Let me ask you a question as a producer, though.
- 19:24Speaker 2: You've worked at ESPN. There's a lot of pressure to
- 19:26Speaker 2: generate takes fast. Stephen A. Smith's on TV a lot.
- 19:31Speaker 2: Do you ever give him a pass because you know
- 19:33Speaker 2: he's running through 700 different shows?
- 19:36Speaker 3: But that's his choice. If he wants to be on
- 19:37Speaker 3: 700 different shows, you've got to be prepared and do
- 19:40Speaker 3: some research on Laney Johnson. Dan Patrick's a busy guy.
- 19:43Speaker 3: He does his research and tries to give a measured take.
- 19:47Speaker 3: I'll bet you what happened on that show is after
- 19:49Speaker 3: the break, they saw what happened because all hell broke
- 19:51Speaker 3: loose on social media against Stephen A. Smith's take on
- 19:53Speaker 3: Lane Johnson. When he came back, he tried this half-assed
- 19:57Speaker 3: apology where he said, I was misunderstood. Misunderstood means you
- 20:00Speaker 3: misunderstood me. Then he had to re-apologize for the third
- 20:04Speaker 3: time this morning. Again, You know, learn from this one
- 20:08Speaker 3: and don't do it again because we don't know what's
- 20:10Speaker 3: going on. You got to have more information before you
- 20:12Speaker 3: make that kind of.
- 20:13Speaker 2: Absolutely. OK, I completely agree. OK, my next warm take
- 20:18Speaker 2: is a weather related one. We have some problems with Alabama,
- 20:21Speaker 2: Georgia on Saturday night. Now, apparently the rain might end
- 20:25Speaker 2: from tropical storm Isaias.
- 20:28Speaker 3: What?
- 20:29Speaker 2: Isaias. I'm being told it's Isaias. It was upgraded to hurricane. Now,
- 20:34Speaker 2: there's a couple of issues going on right now. One,
- 20:36Speaker 2: Donald Trump is supposed to come to the game and
- 20:39Speaker 2: the president is saying he's not sure what he's going
- 20:40Speaker 2: to do. Game day, I believe, is in Tuscaloosa for this.
- 20:44Speaker 2: And there are very limited options for moving it because
- 20:46Speaker 2: Atlanta is taken up by the Sunday night game on NBC,
- 20:49Speaker 2: by the way, between the Falcons and the Ravens. So
- 20:53Speaker 2: what do you do if you're Alabama, Georgia? You pretty
- 20:55Speaker 2: much stick to your guns and try and do it
- 20:57Speaker 2: Saturday night. Now, I'm complaining as a fan and I
- 21:00Speaker 2: don't know if I'm complaining about the SEC or about
- 21:03Speaker 2: Alabama or Mother Nature. This is the first awesome SEC
- 21:08Speaker 2: game of the year. I do not want to see
- 21:10Speaker 2: it on a rain-soaked field. We saw the Bears play
- 21:13Speaker 2: the Vikings in Week 2. It was terrible, 9-3. But
- 21:16Speaker 2: the Bears and the Vikings are going to play again.
- 21:18Speaker 2: This is our one chance to finally find out, is
- 21:20Speaker 2: Georgia any good? Because they've beaten a terrible schedule. Is
- 21:23Speaker 2: Alabama any good? Is Keelan Russell going to win the Heisman?
- 21:27Speaker 2: This was supposed to be the time. Instead, we're going
- 21:29Speaker 2: to get this watered-down, literally, product And I almost want
- 21:33Speaker 2: them to move it to another week to say whatever game,
- 21:36Speaker 2: you know, if Georgia has Vanderbilt, say, Vanderbilt, you're going
- 21:38Speaker 2: to have to move. We're going to bring Alabama to
- 21:40Speaker 2: this game. I don't want to see a rain-soaked game, Paul.
- 21:42Speaker 2: I don't know who I appeal to, what the higher
- 21:45Speaker 2: authority is here. But this is very depressing as a
- 21:47Speaker 2: college fan because you know they're going to try and play.
- 21:50Speaker 2: And there's a strong possibility the field is going to
- 21:53Speaker 2: be total slop.
- 21:54Speaker 3: Also, beyond the field, the safety issues for the thousands
- 21:56Speaker 3: and thousands of fans.
- 21:57Speaker 2: He'll be commuting during the story. Right.
- 21:59Speaker 3: Not just the fans in the building. Let me tell you,
- 22:00Speaker 3: I've been to SEC games. People travel down there to
- 22:02Speaker 3: go to the bars and hang out around the stadium.
- 22:04Speaker 3: I think you could abundantly caution this one.
- 22:06Speaker 1: Yes.
- 22:07Speaker 3: Either move it to a neutral site like Dallas or
- 22:10Speaker 3: somewhere else that's far enough away. Or if you move
- 22:12Speaker 3: it later in the season, that would be something. Now,
- 22:15Speaker 3: if you have Alabama facing Wofford in Week 15, you just.
- 22:20Speaker 3: You do a home and home with Wofford or something.
- 22:22Speaker 2: Then you have the SEC title game. You don't want
- 22:23Speaker 2: to see a back-to-back.
- 22:25Speaker 3: So as of right now, this game is still being
- 22:26Speaker 3: played even with the hurricane on the way.
- 22:28Speaker 2: Yeah, so there's been varying weather reports. I'm on top
- 22:31Speaker 2: of them. I'm going full Cantori that the rain might
- 22:34Speaker 2: end for the most part. right before the game time
- 22:37Speaker 2: so it'll be dry enough and not too windy but
- 22:40Speaker 2: there's also a chance that it moves inland like this
- 22:41Speaker 2: is a serious storm yeah we're not we're not making
- 22:43Speaker 2: light of this this is a lot of.
- 22:45Speaker 3: Issues not just lightning this is a serious thing.
- 22:47Speaker 2: Yeah no for other parts of the country as well
- 22:49Speaker 2: i hope that i hope that it stays offshore but
- 22:52Speaker 2: if it does come on shore i don't want to
- 22:53Speaker 2: risk anybody as a football fan do you like the
- 22:56Speaker 2: sloppy games like a game like this can't be a.
- 22:58Speaker 3: No, we like snow games. We don't like sloppy rain.
- 23:01Speaker 2: In the NFL, it can be better because it's an
- 23:03Speaker 2: 18-game schedule and those teams are going to play again.
- 23:05Speaker 2: This is a really, really interesting matchup that is getting
- 23:08Speaker 2: affected by this.
- 23:08Speaker 3: All right, let's turn the tables and play a little
- 23:10Speaker 3: fun game before we break. This is one of our favorites.
- 23:13Speaker 3: We haven't said it because we're both really bad at
- 23:15Speaker 3: this game. It's called, who said it? Perloff, hopefully football-related,
- 23:18Speaker 3: but not necessarily. Who said the following quote? Elite level
- 23:22Speaker 3: of dodging slipperiness, being able to get out of the
- 23:25Speaker 3: pocket and the ability to make plays and all the
- 23:27Speaker 3: other really great stuff that a quarterback does. He is
- 23:29Speaker 3: special in a great, great way.
- 23:32Speaker 2: I got it. George Kittle and Brock Purdy.
- 23:35Speaker 3: Oh, that's good. Todd Bowles about his young quarterback.
- 23:38Speaker 2: Oh, that's good.
- 23:39Speaker 3: Taking a shot in the dark. Here we go. Who
- 23:41Speaker 3: said it? Elite level of.
- 23:44Speaker 2: Oh, come on. It's always Harbaugh.
- 23:46Speaker 5: Dodging slipperiness, you know, being able to get out of
- 23:49Speaker 5: the pocket and... uh, come on and, you know, ability to,
- 23:55Speaker 5: to make plays and, um, you know, and all the,
- 23:59Speaker 5: all the other, all the other really great stuff that,
- 24:03Speaker 5: that a quarterback does. But, uh, you know, he is
- 24:06Speaker 5: special in terms of, uh, you know, in a great way.
- 24:11Speaker 3: So that's Jim Harbaugh, not talking about his quarterback. He's
- 24:13Speaker 3: talking about his opponent, Bo Nix elite level of slipperiness.
- 24:16Speaker 3: Sounds like an eighties, uh, alt rock band, by the way. Um,
- 24:20Speaker 3: Over-complimenting the opposing quarterback, that's standard procedure.
- 24:22Speaker 2: Yeah, the thing about Bo Nix is you and I
- 24:24Speaker 2: cannot figure him out for the life of us. He's
- 24:26Speaker 2: not good for 45 minutes, and he's awesome in the
- 24:28Speaker 2: fourth quarter. He can move. I remember back at Auburn,
- 24:32Speaker 2: he was a running guy, so I get what he's saying.
- 24:35Speaker 2: But Jim Harbaugh, at 0-4, I don't want to hear
- 24:37Speaker 2: anything good about the other team.
- 24:38Speaker 3: If I run the Broncos, I hypnotize Bo Nix and
- 24:41Speaker 3: tell him every quarter is a fourth quarter. All right,
- 24:42Speaker 3: one more. We didn't get that one. We got one more.
- 24:44Speaker 3: Who said it? Pearl, here we go. He's a gamer.
- 24:47Speaker 3: He's a guy that goes in there and he's going
- 24:48Speaker 3: to be electric. I can't say enough about him. Oh,
- 24:50Speaker 3: there's a hint. He's been in these type of situations
- 24:53Speaker 3: so often. He's always come through.
- 24:56Speaker 2: Okay. This is baseball. And it's about a pitcher. Wow.
- 25:02Speaker 2: And I don't know what pitcher that is.
- 25:03Speaker 4: No.
- 25:04Speaker 2: Gosh. Talking about Yamamoto.
- 25:07Speaker 3: He's a gamer. Yamamoto.
- 25:08Speaker 2: This is Dave Roberts on Yamamoto.
- 25:09Speaker 3: I'll go Dave Roberts as well.
- 25:12Speaker 2: Gamer. He's a gamer. He's a guy that goes in
- 25:14Speaker 2: there and is going to be electric. Come on. I
- 25:17Speaker 2: can't say really enough about Snoop.
- 25:18Speaker 3: He's been in these types of situations so often, and
- 25:22Speaker 3: he's always come through. And that's Mark Andrews, the tight end,
- 25:25Speaker 3: talking about Snoop Hundley, the backup quarterback of the Ravens.
- 25:28Speaker 3: I'm going to throw the BS flag. That is too
- 25:29Speaker 3: deep of a cut for either of us to get.
- 25:31Speaker 3: We could have been here an hour. We're throwing the
- 25:33Speaker 3: flag on this game. This game just, I'm over it.
- 25:35Speaker 3: This is like algebra in high school. I'm over it.
- 25:37Speaker 2: But I do agree with Mark Andrews, by the way.
- 25:39Speaker 2: Tyler Huntley, Snoop Huntley will find a way to keep
- 25:41Speaker 2: you in a game. I don't know how.
- 25:43Speaker 3: Snoop in Baltimore is from the wire. Snoop Huntley is
- 25:45Speaker 3: the quarterback. So there's two Snoops in Baltimore. Remember to
- 25:48Speaker 3: show the wire. All right, coming up next. Oh, bonus coverage.
- 25:51Speaker 3: John Fanta of NBC Sports Talk. Baseball, football, basketball, whatever
- 25:55Speaker 3: it may be. Fanta joins us next. Stick around. Not
- 25:57Speaker 3: so fast.
- 26:00Speaker 2: I love how mad you get when we don't get
- 26:01Speaker 2: them right.
- 26:02Speaker 3: Oh, man, because I'm awful at this game. I'm over.
- 26:04Speaker 3: Snoop from The Wire, the great actor, Felicia Pearson played
- 26:07Speaker 3: Snoop in The Wire.
- 26:09Speaker 2: Okay.
- 26:09Speaker 3: Love that show.
- 26:10Speaker 2: Welcome back. Not so fast. Andrew Perloff, Paul Paps. And
- 26:13Speaker 2: now when we started on NBC Sports Now, Peacock, we
- 26:15Speaker 2: were so excited. Same day as Fanta in 60. Of course,
- 26:19Speaker 2: John Fanta is all over NBC Sports Now. But Paul,
- 26:22Speaker 2: I got to tell you, I didn't think we would
- 26:23Speaker 2: be talking Cleveland Browns football. It's already October. And they're
- 26:26Speaker 2: still alive. John, are you able to contain yourself with
- 26:29Speaker 2: a three and one star for the Cleveland Browns?
- 26:33Speaker 6: Normally, the baseball season in Cleveland's been lasting longer than
- 26:36Speaker 6: the football season. I can't believe it. I mean, this
- 26:40Speaker 6: is a testament to Todd Munkin. I think if you
- 26:44Speaker 6: were giving out an NFL coach of the year thus far,
- 26:48Speaker 6: I would give it to him, Andrew and Paul, because
- 26:52Speaker 6: people thought the Browns would be a bottom three team
- 26:54Speaker 6: in the NFL. I think it's also a testament to, like,
- 26:57Speaker 6: you know, sometimes we overcomplicate things, guys, when we're analyzing
- 27:02Speaker 6: all sports. And it was pretty clear in early August
- 27:06Speaker 6: when looking at the Browns from training camp and then
- 27:09Speaker 6: hearing what people that were really close to the team
- 27:11Speaker 6: were saying, there was just a different vibe. And, like,
- 27:14Speaker 6: there's 32 NFL teams. We're talking about the select class
- 27:17Speaker 6: of football players. And if you have alignment and you've
- 27:21Speaker 6: got a common mission, you're going to hang around. You
- 27:24Speaker 6: can compete. And Todd Munkin has injected a new type
- 27:28Speaker 6: of energy in the football team. But I think that
- 27:29Speaker 6: was the thing that was most frustrating about the Browns
- 27:31Speaker 6: in recent years. Guys, it's not like we're talking about
- 27:34Speaker 6: a roster devoid of talent. They had pieces. The surprising
- 27:38Speaker 6: thing to me is how good the rookie receivers have been.
- 27:41Speaker 6: Denzel Boston, Casey Concepcion. I thought they'd show flashes. I
- 27:43Speaker 6: didn't think they'd be as good as they've been off
- 27:45Speaker 6: the bat. They've been great.
- 27:46Speaker 3: You know, and what's funny about that, I think it's
- 27:48Speaker 3: really easy for the media to pick against the Browns
- 27:51Speaker 3: in the preseason. If you don't watch a lot of
- 27:52Speaker 3: Browns football... The last month of the year, they looked
- 27:54Speaker 3: really good, and then the Miles Garrett trade was the
- 27:57Speaker 3: right move. It's tough to get rid of first ballot
- 28:01Speaker 3: Hall of Famers, but they got a lot back. They're
- 28:03Speaker 3: in position for now and the future. Deshaun Watson playing
- 28:06Speaker 3: good football, they'd be fine with good football, B-level football.
- 28:10Speaker 3: Is that fair to say, John?
- 28:11Speaker 6: Yeah, because if he plays B-level football, they're going to
- 28:14Speaker 6: be in the mix to get a playoff spot in
- 28:16Speaker 6: an AFC that's got a lot of questions right now.
- 28:18Speaker 6: And the Browns' schedule is not very difficult. I mean,
- 28:21Speaker 6: they're playing a last-place schedule. And week to week, things change, but...
- 28:26Speaker 6: For the Cleveland Browns, they've been somewhat fortunate with their
- 28:29Speaker 6: early slate. After Jacksonville, they're catching Tampa Bay at a
- 28:33Speaker 6: perfect time. Tampa Bay doesn't know what they're doing. Carolina's defense,
- 28:37Speaker 6: not good, and you had a motivated home crowd. The Steelers, look,
- 28:40Speaker 6: that was a good win. Pittsburgh, we dump on them
- 28:44Speaker 6: when they lose, and we give them a lot of
- 28:46Speaker 6: credit when they win. They get a lot of extreme reaction.
- 28:49Speaker 6: They're still a solid football team. But it's staring you
- 28:52Speaker 6: in the face here. You're 4-1. You look at the
- 28:55Speaker 6: percent chances of making the playoffs when you're off to
- 28:57Speaker 6: a 4-1 start, and they're very, very strong. And this
- 29:01Speaker 6: is the team that, you know, they've had a lot
- 29:03Speaker 6: of success against Cincinnati over the years. They faced them twice.
- 29:07Speaker 6: They're still going to wrap up with the NFC South,
- 29:10Speaker 6: which has its flaws. They have the New York Giants
- 29:14Speaker 6: in December on their schedule. We'll see what state the
- 29:18Speaker 6: Giants are in in that case. They look good off
- 29:20Speaker 6: the bat, but it's a good thing you're probably getting
- 29:22Speaker 6: them later than now because I think they're a very
- 29:24Speaker 6: motivated football team now. So for the Browns, it's all
- 29:28Speaker 6: there for the taking. The Browns still play the Titans.
- 29:30Speaker 6: They still have the Tennessee Titans on their schedule. So
- 29:34Speaker 6: there are a lot of very gettable games for this
- 29:36Speaker 6: football team. They need to get this one, in MetLife
- 29:39Speaker 6: on Sunday sounds like it's going to be monsooning but
- 29:41Speaker 6: you know Watson's been solid yep he has been otherworldly
- 29:45Speaker 6: great he has not been bad he's delivered in the
- 29:48Speaker 6: big moments he's doing what a franchise quarterback needs to
- 29:51Speaker 6: do and that is when the game comes down to
- 29:53Speaker 6: it in the fourth quarter can you put a drive
- 29:55Speaker 6: together it might have been a 56 yard field goal
- 29:57Speaker 6: he still got them down there he still got them
- 29:59Speaker 6: in a position where they could beat the Steelers We'll
- 30:01Speaker 6: see if he keeps it going. It's a good story
- 30:03Speaker 6: for the Browns. I'm shocked by it. I'm absolutely stunned
- 30:06Speaker 6: by what he's doing. But you know what? We'll see
- 30:09Speaker 6: if it can keep going.
- 30:11Speaker 2: You know, they are two and a half point dogs
- 30:12Speaker 2: as of right now this weekend, which is I don't
- 30:15Speaker 2: think Vegas is caught up. I want to shift to
- 30:16Speaker 2: college football. And, you know, you've been following the Big
- 30:18Speaker 2: Ten closely, college countdown this season. Do you remember a
- 30:23Speaker 2: college wide receiver like Jeremiah Smith at Ohio State? He
- 30:27Speaker 2: is obviously the front runner for the Heisman. Paul and
- 30:30Speaker 2: I have been debating it all week. Is there another
- 30:32Speaker 2: college wide receiver that has done what he's been able
- 30:35Speaker 2: to do so far this season?
- 30:38Speaker 6: First off, no. I mean, like in my I'm 31.
- 30:42Speaker 6: I've never seen anything like this from from a wide
- 30:46Speaker 6: receiver and really from I mean, I think of my
- 30:50Speaker 6: childhood and watching college football. And Reggie Bush was the
- 30:53Speaker 6: first guy who I was like, wow, nobody does that.
- 30:55Speaker 3: Yeah, can't stop.
- 30:56Speaker 6: You just can't stop him. And, you know, there have
- 31:00Speaker 6: been others through the years I was. always impressed with,
- 31:04Speaker 6: you know, some of, like, I can remember watching Derrick
- 31:07Speaker 6: Henry in college and Mark Ingram, but, like, at the
- 31:09Speaker 6: wide receiver position, guys, you also got to have somebody
- 31:12Speaker 6: throwing you the football, and you got to have protection,
- 31:15Speaker 6: and you're not getting touches. It's not guaranteed you're going
- 31:18Speaker 6: to touch the ball every play when you're a wide receiver.
- 31:20Speaker 6: It's just not, you know, because there's things that have
- 31:25Speaker 6: to go right for you to get the ball, and
- 31:28Speaker 6: what he's doing right now is historic. I mean, Jeremiah
- 31:30Speaker 6: Smith's is is making history every single time he touches
- 31:34Speaker 6: the football and you could sense that when against Illinois
- 31:40Speaker 6: he had four touchdown receptions like it was nothing and
- 31:43Speaker 6: he had never had more than two in a game
- 31:45Speaker 6: and that to me the Illinois win for Ohio State
- 31:48Speaker 6: the way that he played that was the first time
- 31:50Speaker 6: it really clicked for me of like okay I don't
- 31:54Speaker 6: care what this guy says This guy knows he's the
- 31:56Speaker 6: best player on the field, and he knows he's the
- 32:00Speaker 6: Heisman winner if he puts his head down and does
- 32:03Speaker 6: what he needs to do. And that's exactly what he's done.
- 32:05Speaker 6: You know, Sane deserves credit because Sane's– I think people
- 32:09Speaker 6: have doubted Sane because, you know, young last year and
- 32:12Speaker 6: what he battled through it and whatnot. But, like, he's
- 32:16Speaker 6: a poised individual. And what Smith is making happen, that combination, guys, like,
- 32:22Speaker 6: to me– Alabama's got the best offense in the country.
- 32:28Speaker 6: Ohio State has a better defense than Alabama, and Ohio
- 32:31Speaker 6: State has the best weapon on the field. And they
- 32:34Speaker 6: might have one loss. I think that one loss might
- 32:36Speaker 6: have been the best thing that ever could have happened
- 32:38Speaker 6: to them. Because if they avoid the bye, it'd be
- 32:40Speaker 6: a good thing for Ohio State, in my opinion. I
- 32:41Speaker 6: don't want a college football play. I want a play.
- 32:44Speaker 3: All right, J.F., I'm watching your show, Phantom 60, Monday night,
- 32:47Speaker 3: and you were talking about the baseball playoffs last week,
- 32:50Speaker 3: all on NBC. Now, you were at, and afterwards, we're
- 32:53Speaker 3: going to show the video here of you after the
- 32:54Speaker 3: Padres game getting champagne poured on you. We're going to
- 32:57Speaker 3: get to that. But I've never been to a Padres
- 33:00Speaker 3: home game nor a playoff game. That felt like an
- 33:02Speaker 3: SEC or Big Ten football game. Have you ever been
- 33:05Speaker 3: to a baseball? I know you've been around for a
- 33:07Speaker 3: while covering baseball. Have you ever been to a baseball
- 33:09Speaker 3: home game that felt that energetic?
- 33:11Speaker 2: No. No.
- 33:12Speaker 6: No, full stop. And I saw the the Indians and
- 33:15Speaker 6: the Yankees in the 2007 American League Division Series. I
- 33:19Speaker 6: thought the ballpark was on fire. You know, they were
- 33:21Speaker 6: chanting Kenny Lofton because remember when Kenny came back for
- 33:24Speaker 6: one last stint and there were the midges of John
- 33:27Speaker 6: Java Chamberlain's neck. This was better. This was better. Petco
- 33:32Speaker 6: Park is second to nobody. I'll fight this fight as
- 33:37Speaker 6: long as you need me to. I have no allegiance
- 33:40Speaker 6: to San Diego, but I think this. I think their
- 33:42Speaker 6: fans are outstanding. They are the only major sports city
- 33:46Speaker 6: where the one sport that they have is baseball. I'm
- 33:49Speaker 6: watching you.
- 33:50Speaker 3: Out there, John. It was fantastic, and they were up
- 33:52Speaker 3: from the first inning. They were going before the game
- 33:54Speaker 3: even started. Before we wrap you up here, I know
- 33:56Speaker 3: you're doing some Big Ten stuff. We have a thing
- 33:58Speaker 3: here called such thing as a dumb question. You were
- 34:01Speaker 3: in the postgame interview with Tatis and other people. You
- 34:03Speaker 3: had the slicker on, and you were getting champagne and
- 34:06Speaker 3: other things poured upon your head. What does an announcer
- 34:09Speaker 3: do right after he gets stuff poured all over them?
- 34:11Speaker 3: Do you go to the bathroom and clean up? Can
- 34:13Speaker 3: you shower on the premises? Do you have a change
- 34:15Speaker 3: of clothes? Do you run back to the hotel? Walk
- 34:16Speaker 3: me through the postgame.
- 34:18Speaker 6: I really wanted to drink a beer. because of the
- 34:21Speaker 6: amount that was there. I thought it was so cool.
- 34:23Speaker 6: It was like the closest I had gotten to alcohol
- 34:26Speaker 6: while being on the job.
- 34:28Speaker 3: You absorbed it.
- 34:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 34:30Speaker 6: I mean, I'm not going to lie. There were a
- 34:31Speaker 6: couple of splashes of champagne that may or may not
- 34:34Speaker 6: have made it into my mouth.
- 34:35Speaker 3: Not your fault.
- 34:36Speaker 6: For that, no. Not my fault at all.
- 34:38Speaker 1: Come on.
- 34:38Speaker 6: I mean, I didn't have to sign any papers walking
- 34:40Speaker 6: in the clubhouse. No, you know what I did?
- 34:43Speaker 2: I was so.
- 34:44Speaker 6: Our postgame coverage was so much fun, and the Tatis
- 34:46Speaker 6: moment was amazing. I literally went back to the hotel.
- 34:49Speaker 6: I said, well, this suit's ruined. I put it in
- 34:52Speaker 6: a plastic bag, and I put on my, you know,
- 34:56Speaker 6: my sports shirt and a pair of shorts. And the
- 34:59Speaker 6: best thing about it is the hotels connect to the ballpark.
- 35:01Speaker 6: I walked across the street, guys. I had three Coronas
- 35:05Speaker 6: with lime, and I called it a night.
- 35:07Speaker 2: Wait, you drank them. You didn't pour them on your head.
- 35:09Speaker 3: No.
- 35:10Speaker 6: I did not pour them on my head, Andrew. I
- 35:12Speaker 6: gave thought to it. I'm going to save that for
- 35:15Speaker 6: when the Browns win the AFC North.
- 35:17Speaker 3: Oh, wow.
- 35:19Speaker 2: Yeah, I think those beers are going to spoil by
- 35:20Speaker 2: that time. John, thank you so much for your time.
- 35:23Speaker 2: Hopefully we're talking Browns football all year long, baby.
- 35:26Speaker 6: I'll talk anything with you guys. I love the show,
- 35:29Speaker 6: and thanks for having me on.
- 35:30Speaker 2: All right. That's John Fanta. Of course, you can see him, Fanta,
- 35:33Speaker 2: in 60 Monday nights, 6 p.m. Eastern and re-airing throughout
- 35:37Speaker 2: the week. Paul, he's on fire right now.
- 35:39Speaker 3: Yeah, I always wanted to know because I've been in
- 35:41Speaker 3: locker rooms. I've only had stuff poured on me. But
- 35:42Speaker 3: these reporters, they get absolutely shellacked with champagne, beer, whatever
- 35:46Speaker 3: it may be. You can't go back to the hotel.
- 35:49Speaker 3: You have to take a train. You can't get on
- 35:50Speaker 3: a plane. You've got to.
- 35:52Speaker 2: D-robe. I laughed so hard at John's plastic outfit. I'm
- 35:56Speaker 2: not sure I've ever seen a reporter take more precautions.
- 35:59Speaker 3: He still got wet. He looked like he was on
- 36:01Speaker 3: the Weather Channel. I thought he was going to be
- 36:02Speaker 3: with Cantor. He had the slicker on.
- 36:04Speaker 2: Oh, that was awesome. All right, coming up next, we
- 36:06Speaker 2: have a clip from the Dan Patrick show on the
- 36:08Speaker 2: NFL that's very interesting. Stay tuned. Not so fast. Yeah,
- 36:12Speaker 2: he had the full slicker.
- 36:13Speaker 3: He had the glasses on. And he's like a weathercaster.
- 36:16Speaker 2: Yeah, no, it was great. And he still looked like
- 36:18Speaker 2: he got soaked, which was amazing. You can't protect yourself.
- 36:20Speaker 3: Soaked in some champagne.
- 36:27Speaker 7: Is this era over where it's all or nothing? And look,
- 36:31Speaker 7: I know I'm old school, but still, there's nothing wrong
- 36:34Speaker 7: with going back to the old school to help you
- 36:37Speaker 7: with graduate school. I looked at the White Sox. They
- 36:41Speaker 7: struck out 19 times yesterday. 19 times! This is historically embarrassing,
- 36:49Speaker 7: but it's not. And you're watching the game, and it's
- 36:52Speaker 7: not a good product when all you get are strikeouts.
- 36:56Speaker 7: Because nobody's saying, all right, come on now, base knock,
- 36:58Speaker 7: base knock. That's not what we're cheering for anymore. Hey,
- 37:02Speaker 7: come on now. Swing and hit a home run or
- 37:04Speaker 7: strike out.
- 37:07Speaker 3: Back on Not So Fast, Paps and Perloff here, NBC
- 37:10Speaker 3: Sports Now. Dan's got a point, but it does feel
- 37:13Speaker 3: like the past two or three years, the steals are
- 37:15Speaker 3: up a little bit, the gloves when they steal with,
- 37:18Speaker 3: the pitch clock. So I would say that the past
- 37:20Speaker 3: 10 years with strikeouts or home runs was kind of
- 37:22Speaker 3: tough to deal with, but it feels like it's just
- 37:24Speaker 3: starting to tip in the other way where more creation
- 37:26Speaker 3: of runs.
- 37:27Speaker 2: Well, I mean, they changed the rules with the pickoff,
- 37:30Speaker 2: so that's why you have all the stolen bases.
- 37:32Speaker 3: Totally.
- 37:32Speaker 2: I don't even think, by the way, you should do
- 37:34Speaker 2: any stolen base records anymore because it's so much easier now.
- 37:36Speaker 2: But I got to... Really? Top five teams... Oh, yeah,
- 37:38Speaker 2: it's ridiculous. Like, Vince Coleman, they used to... had 10
- 37:42Speaker 2: pickoff throws.
- 37:43Speaker 3: And I hate the long glove that gives you that.
- 37:44Speaker 2: And they made the bases bigger as well. Stolen bases
- 37:47Speaker 2: is not a real record anymore.
- 37:48Speaker 1: Nice.
- 37:50Speaker 2: But the top five teams in home runs this year
- 37:51Speaker 2: were Astros, Yankees, Cubs, all playoff teams, Reds, and then
- 37:55Speaker 2: the White Sox. These darling White Sox were top five
- 37:57Speaker 2: in home runs. Home runs win in the regular season cumulatively.
- 38:00Speaker 2: So that's why teams are still trying to do it.
- 38:02Speaker 3: The other thing, though, that has been weird the past
- 38:04Speaker 3: 10 years is that your leadoff hitter is not necessarily
- 38:06Speaker 3: a guy hitting 310 who steals 40 bases. And that's
- 38:10Speaker 3: tough for old schoolers.
- 38:11Speaker 2: To deal with. Well, I think the Rays may prove
- 38:14Speaker 2: that the old school works. You've got to watch the Rays.
- 38:16Speaker 2: If the Rays do this, I think you're right. There
- 38:18Speaker 2: might be a trend away from the home runs. But,
- 38:21Speaker 2: you know, guys want to walk. That means there's going
- 38:23Speaker 2: to be more strikeouts. Yeah, someone's got to score in
- 38:26Speaker 2: this playoffs, Paul.
- 38:27Speaker 3: Next on the clip joint, Ben Affleck, big time actor,
- 38:30Speaker 3: movie maker, friend of the show. He was on the
- 38:32Speaker 3: show today. He grew up in Boston. Matt Damon, of course,
- 38:36Speaker 3: is one of his best friends. So Ben Affleck, Matt Damon,
- 38:39Speaker 3: and another guy go on a road trip The pilgrimage
- 38:41Speaker 3: to Larry Bird, he told us a story. It was fantastic.
- 38:45Speaker 4: Larry Bird and that team was, you know, was Boston
- 38:49Speaker 4: in those days. And in fact, so much so that
- 38:51Speaker 4: when we graduated from high school, Matt and I and
- 38:54Speaker 4: another friend of ours drove to French Lick, Indiana to
- 38:58Speaker 4: try to meet Larry Bird.
- 39:00Speaker 3: And we were like, I don't encourage.
- 39:01Speaker 5: This behavior, by the way.
- 39:02Speaker 4: Don't drive to famous people's homes.
- 39:04Speaker 3: Don't ring their bells.
- 39:06Speaker 4: We did do this, and we got there, and they
- 39:09Speaker 4: were like, Larry's in Portland practicing with the Dream Team.
- 39:12Speaker 2: And so we probably could have.
- 39:13Speaker 4: Easily found out, but we drove all the way there
- 39:16Speaker 4: to be.
- 39:17Speaker 3: Told that Larry wasn't in French Lick.
- 39:19Speaker 4: We went to a bar in downtown French Lick and said,
- 39:22Speaker 4: where does Larry Bird live? And they were like, oh,
- 39:24Speaker 4: just right up the road. I mean, they just told
- 39:26Speaker 4: us where his house was. We drove up the street,
- 39:28Speaker 4: and there, of course, was Larry.
- 39:30Speaker 3: Like, you can't miss it.
- 39:30Speaker 4: It's got the basketball court up front. And it was like, yeah,
- 39:33Speaker 4: this full court with no nets in the hoop. I
- 39:35Speaker 4: figured Larry had worn them off, draining threes.
- 39:39Speaker 3: And yeah, we stood.
- 39:40Speaker 4: There and rang the bell and then just took a
- 39:43Speaker 4: bunch of pictures standing in front of his house, like,
- 39:45Speaker 4: you know, bowing like Wayne's World.
- 39:47Speaker 2: We're not worthy.
- 39:48Speaker 3: And That is such a good story by Ben Affleck
- 39:50Speaker 3: and a true story. They didn't drive from Chicago or
- 39:53Speaker 3: Louisville to central Indiana to see Larry Bird. They drove
- 39:56Speaker 3: from Boston.
- 39:56Speaker 2: And the incredible part is Dan Patrick did the exact
- 39:59Speaker 2: same thing except Dan did it with a girlfriend. These
- 40:01Speaker 2: are the two famous people who drove to Larry Bird.
- 40:03Speaker 2: What are the odds?
- 40:04Speaker 3: Why is Ben Affleck not making that into a movie?
- 40:06Speaker 3: That'd be fantastic.
- 40:07Speaker 2: Have you ever?
- 40:08Speaker 3: Not stalk, pilgrimage to an athlete. I have one.
- 40:11Speaker 2: Gosh, no, I don't think so.
- 40:12Speaker 1: You go.
- 40:12Speaker 2: I'll think about it.
- 40:13Speaker 3: So Southside Chicago, Walter Payton fans, it's mandatory. Not shocking.
- 40:17Speaker 3: It's a Walter Payton story. My high school friends and I,
- 40:20Speaker 3: we got in the car. There was a hill in
- 40:21Speaker 3: Arlington Heights that Walter Payton used to work at and
- 40:24Speaker 3: work out at in the off season. We drove to
- 40:26Speaker 3: the hill and sat there for two hours waiting to
- 40:28Speaker 3: see if Walter Payton would show up. And this guy goes,
- 40:31Speaker 3: he's not here yet. And there's just some random guy like,
- 40:34Speaker 3: is he coming? He goes, I don't know. And he
- 40:36Speaker 3: just sat there like this. and he didn't show up,
- 40:38Speaker 3: but it was still a cool day.
- 40:40Speaker 2: I'll admit one time we went to Allen Iverson's side
- 40:43Speaker 2: office to see if we could see the answer.
- 40:45Speaker 3: That's fine.
- 40:46Speaker 2: Yeah, it was a strip joint.
- 40:48Speaker 3: Yeah, you didn't have to say that.
- 40:49Speaker 2: Okay. Go to see AI.
- 40:50Speaker 3: At least you probably had a better time. We were
- 40:52Speaker 3: at a hill with nobody around. You were at a
- 40:54Speaker 3: strip joint.
- 40:54Speaker 2: Wait, I have a question. Michael Jordan's house with the
- 40:57Speaker 2: famous gate.
- 40:57Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 40:58Speaker 2: Can people go up to that one?
- 40:59Speaker 3: Yeah, it's not a gated community. You can get back there,
- 41:02Speaker 3: but it's not that easy. It's a nice neighborhood.
- 41:04Speaker 2: I don't think MJ would want you there.
- 41:06Speaker 3: No, he sure wouldn't. All right, coming up next. constructive criticism,
- 41:09Speaker 3: the feel good, and questions from the back room. Can't wait.
- 41:12Speaker 3: Let's go. Questions from the back room next.
- 41:14Speaker 2: Should I have not said that thing about Iverson? It's true.
- 41:17Speaker 4: It's true.
- 41:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 41:18Speaker 3: We went to the Walter Payton Hill. We're just sitting there.
- 41:21Speaker 3: We're tailgating. We had like donuts. Maybe I'll show up.
- 41:25Speaker 3: Bunch of dorks.
- 41:28Speaker 2: Welcome back, Not So Fast, NBC Sports Now, and Peacock. Paul,
- 41:32Speaker 2: I'm so excited because you know what's coming next.
- 41:34Speaker 3: Yeah, week two of one of the most popular segments
- 41:36Speaker 3: on the Not So Fast universe. It's called Questions from
- 41:39Speaker 3: the Backroom with our guy, Dan Gardella. Here we go,
- 41:42Speaker 3: questions from the backroom. Dan Gardella, DP show editor, 1215
- 41:47Speaker 3: show host, correspondent for Not So Fast. Dan, you crushed
- 41:50Speaker 3: it last week. A lot of response, a lot of
- 41:52Speaker 3: energy in the backroom. We don't know what's coming.
- 41:55Speaker 2: Hit us.
- 41:55Speaker 3: Go ahead, bud.
- 41:56Speaker 8: Yeah, not as many spirited discussions this week, but still
- 41:59Speaker 8: some good questions. So let's just jump right into it.
- 42:01Speaker 8: We're going to start on the NFL. A lot of
- 42:02Speaker 8: good uniforms in the sport. Plenty to choose from, but
- 42:05Speaker 8: I'm going to give you three. Start, bench, cut these uniforms.
- 42:08Speaker 2: Oh, wow.
- 42:09Speaker 8: The 49ers, the Cowboys, and the Steelers.
- 42:13Speaker 2: Oh, three classics, Dan. I'll start first. Go ahead. I
- 42:18Speaker 2: am going to start the Steelers. Because that's awesome. Obviously
- 42:23Speaker 2: black or gold or yellow or whatever it is. Cowboys
- 42:26Speaker 2: is the middle one. And the Niners is fine. But
- 42:29Speaker 2: to me, that's the bench out of those three. Because
- 42:31Speaker 2: you're doing three iconic uniforms.
- 42:33Speaker 3: I'm completely opposite. I think the 49ers pop in the sun.
- 42:37Speaker 3: I weirdly don't like that red and gold. But together,
- 42:40Speaker 3: they look fantastic. The Steelers' tradition and the town feel
- 42:44Speaker 3: of their uniforms is great. The consistency is great. The
- 42:47Speaker 3: Cowboys uniforms, I like the consistency. I've never been blown
- 42:50Speaker 3: away by them. I think they're nice quality uniforms, so
- 42:52Speaker 3: they're my cut.
- 42:53Speaker 2: But my favorite, of course, is when the Bengals go
- 42:56Speaker 2: all white with the white and black Tiger helmet. That's
- 43:00Speaker 2: number one to me. Wow.
- 43:01Speaker 3: Gutsy.
- 43:02Speaker 8: Yeah, I don't think you can go wrong with these.
- 43:05Speaker 8: Any of those combinations are good. That one was from
- 43:06Speaker 8: your producer, Scott, so be sure to thank him for
- 43:08Speaker 8: that one.
- 43:09Speaker 2: All right. Let's keep moving.
- 43:10Speaker 8: If you could own any team in sports across all
- 43:13Speaker 8: the sports, Take out the ones you root for.
- 43:16Speaker 2: Take out the money.
- 43:18Speaker 8: Which team are you picking and why?
- 43:20Speaker 3: I'll go first. A bunch of years ago, I went
- 43:21Speaker 3: to an English Premier League match. I went to see
- 43:23Speaker 3: Fulham in this neighborhood outside of London. And they had
- 43:26Speaker 3: wooden benches, and it felt like Wrigley Field for professional soccer.
- 43:31Speaker 3: And I like the Premier League. I like pubs. Not
- 43:33Speaker 3: in that order. If I owned Fulham football, I would
- 43:36Speaker 3: just walk to the pub, walk to the match, and
- 43:38Speaker 3: go home. I'd be fine with that as a lifestyle.
- 43:40Speaker 2: Okay, for me, there's two options here. I want to
- 43:43Speaker 2: take over a team that never wins and be the
- 43:46Speaker 2: guy who wins. Now, unfortunately, the top choice is the
- 43:49Speaker 2: Lions and the Jets. And the Jets are closer to
- 43:53Speaker 2: my house, so I have fantasized about owning the Jets.
- 43:55Speaker 3: And you'd be the hero. You'd be the hero forever.
- 43:57Speaker 2: I would move them into New York City, get them
- 43:59Speaker 2: out of New Jersey. I think that's a major problem.
- 44:01Speaker 2: And then I'd go back in time and draft Patrick
- 44:04Speaker 2: Mahomes instead of... Who'd they take? They took the safety.
- 44:08Speaker 2: Jamal Adams. Yeah, gutsy. There are a lot of things
- 44:11Speaker 2: the Jets can do, and there's a lot of room
- 44:12Speaker 2: for improvement. And the bar is so low, so New York.
- 44:15Speaker 3: And Dan, I think you'd agree with me. I think
- 44:17Speaker 3: Perloff would do a bang-up job there. Just bring him
- 44:19Speaker 3: back to New York City, the fans would vote for
- 44:20Speaker 3: you as the owner.
- 44:21Speaker 8: Yeah, that's half the battle. I'm thinking the same way
- 44:23Speaker 8: as you, Perloff. I'm taking the worst team imaginable. I
- 44:25Speaker 8: was thinking Colorado Rockies.
- 44:27Speaker 2: Okay.
- 44:27Speaker 8: Phoenix Stadium. You can't do any worse than what's currently
- 44:30Speaker 8: going on. So I think you build them. You win
- 44:32Speaker 8: a couple games. You're beloved by the fan base. It
- 44:35Speaker 8: seems like a good formula.
- 44:36Speaker 2: Nice.
- 44:36Speaker 3: What's in the last one, Danny G?
- 44:37Speaker 2: We're going to stick baseball.
- 44:38Speaker 8: Playoff baseball going on, obviously. A lot of great matchups.
- 44:41Speaker 8: A lot of great games. If you had to choose,
- 44:43Speaker 8: would you prefer a high scoring matchup, plenty of offense,
- 44:47Speaker 8: or the prototypical fall classic October pitching duel?
- 44:51Speaker 2: Are you kidding me? I love offensive baseball. I do
- 44:55Speaker 2: not want to see a 2-1, or even worse, if
- 44:58Speaker 2: you're a Yankees fan, a 1-0 game. I want to
- 45:01Speaker 2: see balls flying out of the stadium. You know, I'm
- 45:03Speaker 2: a Phillies fan, and look at that ballpark. I wish
- 45:06Speaker 2: they were still playing there because you know you could
- 45:08Speaker 2: get home runs there.
- 45:09Speaker 3: You know, I don't really care as long as it's close,
- 45:11Speaker 3: but that's a bit of a cop-out. Yeah, I want
- 45:13Speaker 3: the scoring. I want stuff happening right off the bat,
- 45:15Speaker 3: right out of the gate. Low-scoring games are great in
- 45:18Speaker 3: the 8th and 9th. Not so good in the first
- 45:19Speaker 3: seven innings.
- 45:21Speaker 8: Yeah, and the unfortunate thing is if both your teams
- 45:23Speaker 8: took that advice, they'd probably still be playing.
- 45:25Speaker 2: Oh, Dan, low blow. All right. Thanks, buddy.
- 45:27Speaker 3: Nice shot. Thank you, Danny G.
- 45:28Speaker 2: No problem, guys. Man, there's always something going on in
- 45:32Speaker 2: the back room. All right, Paul, big game tonight. The
- 45:35Speaker 2: Cowboys host the Bucs. Eight and a half points spread.
- 45:38Speaker 2: Who do you got?
- 45:39Speaker 3: I'm picking the Cowboys by two touchdowns. This should be
- 45:41Speaker 3: one of those where you just take advantage of a
- 45:43Speaker 3: young quarterback who hasn't played a lot. But the Jalen
- 45:45Speaker 3: Daniels unknown factor is interesting. He played at Kansas. Interesting quarterback.
- 45:50Speaker 3: It could be a complete disaster or awesome breakout player.
- 45:53Speaker 3: I think that's the hook of the game tonight.
- 45:54Speaker 2: Well, 90% of the money is on the Cowboys. It's
- 45:57Speaker 2: been between 7.5 and 8.5. That makes me very nervous.
- 46:00Speaker 3: How concerned should we be if Jalen Daniels becomes great
- 46:03Speaker 3: and we have to balance Jalen Daniels and Jaden Daniels on.
- 46:07Speaker 2: It's a big issue. We're dealing with Bijan Robinson and
- 46:10Speaker 2: Brian Robinson on Atlanta. A couple numbers, by the way.
- 46:13Speaker 2: Last week, Jalen Daniels ran for 55 yards and Bucky
- 46:16Speaker 2: Irving had 61. So there's a formula to beat Dallas.
- 46:19Speaker 2: Running quarterbacks are a problem for them and running backs
- 46:21Speaker 2: are a problem for them. If they can run all
- 46:23Speaker 2: over them and keep them close. Otherwise, why isn't the
- 46:26Speaker 2: spread 14? You're exactly right. But I think something weird
- 46:28Speaker 2: is going to happen.
- 46:29Speaker 3: A little tighter than we thought. It's time for constructive
- 46:31Speaker 3: criticism from feedback, your questions, your thoughts. Here we go, Pearl.
- 46:34Speaker 3: We got a lot of these in. Hit us up
- 46:36Speaker 3: on Twitter. We'll put them on the show. First one.
- 46:40Speaker 3: What if the Seahawks called the Eagles about Saquon Barkley?
- 46:42Speaker 3: This is from you. Second or third round pick. Eagles
- 46:45Speaker 3: have kept trouble on the horizon and need to go younger.
- 46:47Speaker 3: No dice, right?
- 46:49Speaker 2: I'm not sure if Seattle does this. I think that
- 46:52Speaker 2: makes a lot of sense. John Schneider is GM of Seattle,
- 46:55Speaker 2: and Howie Roseman is another longtime GM of the Eagles.
- 46:58Speaker 2: Neither of them wants to look dumb in this trade.
- 47:00Speaker 2: I think it makes sense. Seattle could make the Super Bowl.
- 47:03Speaker 2: They definitely need help of running back. They tried to
- 47:05Speaker 2: sign Joe Mixon, failed at physical. This makes sense. I
- 47:08Speaker 2: think the Eagles would do it for a second. What
- 47:10Speaker 2: do you think?
- 47:11Speaker 3: I don't think it will happen or should happen. They've
- 47:13Speaker 3: got to go with price. Tailgating is widely known for
- 47:16Speaker 3: its association with football. but there's some baseball stadiums with tailgating.
- 47:19Speaker 3: Do you believe tailgating belongs at every sport or primarily
- 47:22Speaker 3: stay with football and football culture? Like I said, I'll
- 47:25Speaker 3: tailgate anywhere. We were talking, the guys here say people
- 47:27Speaker 3: tailgate at concerts, of course. I've seen lacrosse tailgates that
- 47:31Speaker 3: are bangers. So yeah, tailgate anywhere. Funerals, weddings, whatever maybe.
- 47:35Speaker 2: I feel like it'd be weird to tailgate an NBA
- 47:37Speaker 2: game in the middle of the city. That doesn't make sense.
- 47:39Speaker 2: You're not going to tailgate at Madison Square Garden. You'd
- 47:42Speaker 2: get arrested.
- 47:42Speaker 3: You don't see a lot of tailgating at NBA games,
- 47:44Speaker 3: but Feel free to tailgate anywhere. When I go furlough,
- 47:47Speaker 3: you better be tailgating.
- 47:48Speaker 2: You know what would be good to tailgate? Ice hockey.
- 47:49Speaker 2: It's kind of cold, though.
- 47:51Speaker 3: Yeah, but everything stays cold. All right, let's get to
- 47:52Speaker 3: the feel-good. We're going to go all the way out
- 47:54Speaker 3: to China for the feel-good. This is a good one, Pearl.
- 47:57Speaker 3: I love this. Here we go. The Houston Rockets are
- 48:00Speaker 3: in China. There's Kevin Durant with a bunch of kids
- 48:03Speaker 3: around him. Very excited to see him. That's a long
- 48:06Speaker 3: way to go. That's a cool scene there.
- 48:08Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. China loves the NBA. Obviously, Kevin Ray is
- 48:11Speaker 2: taller than everybody, but he's particularly taller than these kids. Yeah, yeah.
- 48:15Speaker 3: It's an interesting group there. You know, Kobe Bryant talked
- 48:18Speaker 3: about it, this, that he would go to China. And
- 48:20Speaker 3: sometimes he felt more famous in China than he did
- 48:22Speaker 3: in America.
- 48:23Speaker 2: Oh, 100%. I don't understand one thing about it. Kevin
- 48:25Speaker 2: Durant seems like the nicest person in person. We've been
- 48:27Speaker 2: around him a little bit. And then he's so mean
- 48:29Speaker 2: on social media. Who is he?
- 48:31Speaker 3: I think he's defensive on social media. He's more defensive
- 48:33Speaker 3: on social media than he is on the court.
- 48:35Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely.
- 48:36Speaker 1: You know what?
- 48:37Speaker 2: I love seeing him. Remember Marbury in China? I was
- 48:39Speaker 2: always a Stefan Marbury fan. And the fact that he
- 48:41Speaker 2: got a second life there was really gratifying.
- 48:43Speaker 3: Okay, I'm going to hit you with this before we
- 48:44Speaker 3: get done. Finish this statement. If the Cowboys lose tonight
- 48:48Speaker 3: to a second-string unknown quarterback, the fallout is what?
- 48:52Speaker 2: It's even worse than the tropical storm slash hurricane that's
- 48:54Speaker 2: hitting the southeast. It would be a massive fallout. Everyone
- 48:58Speaker 2: thinks Dallas already won this game.
- 48:59Speaker 3: And the opening now, Eagles down a little bit. The
- 49:02Speaker 3: Giants not that great. It's on a tee for them.
- 49:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, the Giants are 3-1, but that's a
- 49:06Speaker 2: fake 3-1. This has got to be the Cowboys' run.
- 49:09Speaker 2: Their schedule's easy. Let's go, Cowboys. All right.
- 49:12Speaker 3: Thanks a lot to John Fanta for joining the show
- 49:14Speaker 3: all the time. Fanta in 60, Mondays at NBC Sports Now.
- 49:17Speaker 3: And tune in tomorrow. John Smoltz on the Dan Patrick
- 49:20Speaker 3: Show and RG3 on the Dan Patrick Show. Then come
- 49:23Speaker 3: hang with us afterwards on Not So Fast, Paps and Proff.
- 49:26Speaker 3: Enjoy the games tonight. Take care.
