- 0:06I'm Connor and I am the vocalist for New Zealand middle core band No Life.
- 0:29We've recently just dropped down and you were a single Obnoxious featuring Freakie over
- 0:33Mule and yeah, so just stoked to be here. Beautiful kind of thanks
- 0:37for joining us today, Thank you, thank you for having me. As
- 0:42you mentioned, No Life recently released your single Obnoxious, Like, how' see
- 0:45the early reception been for it? Oh? Man, it's been crazy.
- 0:49I mean we didn't really expect too much, you know, like we're always
- 0:54trying to manage our expectations as much as we can, so we weren't really
- 0:59expecting too much. But man, it's going off. It's freaking awesome.
- 1:02So yeah, the numbers are racking up, the video is racking up as
- 1:07well. Just super humbled and man it's yeah, it's a great feeling.
- 1:12So yeah, it's been great. Wait, so tell us a bit more
- 1:15about a mock trius from a musical point of view and what you're going for
- 1:18with it. Yeah, so I was actually thinking about this earlier today.
- 1:22How to answer this a question along these lines. Initially, we're obviously big
- 1:29fans of Amure and myself and DJ the guitar guitarist. We both love the
- 1:34song Gucci Prison by Imure, so we're like, oh, we need to
- 1:38write a song like that. And then DJ wrote it so quick and I
- 1:44heard it and I was like, oh, well, we have to get
- 1:46franky on it. So essentially, I just I wrote I wrote the song
- 1:51just to call out dead beats. But the more I think about it,
- 1:53it's probably a bit of a slight at my father and my sort of upbringing,
- 1:57because he's a bit of a alcoholic in a bit of a party you
- 2:00so just you know, being a young kid trying to get sleep and they're
- 2:04just being fucking randoms at the house. So it's kind of taking its own
- 2:08shape. But yeah, it was meant to just be like a a not
- 2:12so tongue in cheek called out of dead beats, And I feel like a
- 2:15lot of people can probably relate to that. So yeah, very sure.
- 2:21How did you actually get like Frankie Palmery from if you were involved in it.
- 2:25I've been obviously been a fan of his for years. I'm thirty years
- 2:30old now, and I think I listened to them when I was like twelve
- 2:31or thirteen. Maybe i've been younger I'm not too sure, and I just
- 2:38looked at them and he slid into his dean and sits on Instagram and just
- 2:40asked if he'd be interested in on jumping on a track and he said to
- 2:46flicking an email sitting through the track and he liked it, I hope,
- 2:50and then yeah, we got it done. He's super lovely to talk to,
- 2:53really professional. Yeah, he must have liked the song. So he
- 2:58did his part and it was pretty pretty simple. Yeah, just put them
- 3:01the message on Instagram and just asking if he wanted to jump on the track,
- 3:04and yeah, he said he was ken. So there we go.
- 3:07So say, from all your point of view, what did he actually bring
- 3:12to the song, Like, how did he how did he enhance the song?
- 3:15Well, I pretty much just so essentially the song you can hear,
- 3:22it's like the first half is me and then the second half is all Franky.
- 3:24So we kind of wanted to do the feature a little bit differently,
- 3:29you know, like some bands will have a big build up and they had
- 3:32the breakdown and then the guest vocals, where we wanted to kind of like
- 3:37get him to be really immersed in the song and make it more than just
- 3:40a feature. We wanted to actually be a part of the song. I
- 3:44wrote the sort of the mumbly sort of talking part and then the hook,
- 3:49and then I just said to go hand and then he did this cool,
- 3:52rappy sort of blow that he has, and then the m part, which
- 3:54is like signature of your so he kind of we were immately, you know,
- 3:59we wanted to em and then your song, and then you know,
- 4:01we got the guy and he just made it fucking ten times cooler. I
- 4:08think it's just like the whole idea of by having Frankie and man, he's
- 4:11he's wicked. So yeah, he just made it. He just elevated it.
- 4:15I feel like it was pretty fun. And then he came in and
- 4:16just he was like the icing on the cake. And how did sorry Dox
- 4:23just follows your previous single identity crisis? So are those two standalone singles or
- 4:27are they part of a bigger picture. He was still trying to figure that
- 4:31out. Initially they were just going to be two standalone singles, but the
- 4:35way that we're kind of working, I think we're just going to keep dropping
- 4:38singles. So maybe take it in together as a full release, either an
- 4:44EP or an LP. But at the moment, we're just yeah, we're
- 4:46just kind of having fun with it and just dropping singles just to keep you
- 4:50know, get people to get a taste of us and atually figure us out.
- 4:54And yes, they're just dropping like a big album and then they're getting
- 4:58lost in the wayside with have social media and people interact and listen to music
- 5:04nowadays. So yeah, just singles at the moment, So we'll keep doing
- 5:10that and then go from there. I guess. Oh, and how to
- 5:14see the new material? You're right now, Giffer, what was on your
- 5:17preview? CP? Delinquent? I feel like we've ready found our sort of
- 5:21niche. We've kind of first because we released Radical Thoughts back in twenty twenty
- 5:30two and then it was just a three track and then we did Your Delinquent
- 5:34and we're still kind of finding our sound for like it's Bassed Dejail. I
- 5:47wild like we should just be a drug and bass band with breakdowns and guitars.
- 5:51So I feel like that's kind of where we've gone to. And everything's
- 5:56still being very like, you know, the lyrics and stuff are still very
- 6:00personal. That that won't I don't think that will change. So it's just
- 6:05yeah, finding our sound. I think we found it with these last two
- 6:09songs and the newer stuff that we're working on at the moment. So it's
- 6:11just yeah, getting a bit more creative and not being shy to try something
- 6:16different, I guess. So, yeah, the last sort of stuff was
- 6:18more I feel like, a bit more you know, what everyone was doing.
- 6:26So now there's stuff that we're doing now. I feel like, you
- 6:28know, we're trying to separate, separate ourselves from the pack, so hopefully
- 6:30we can keep doing that. As a young band mate, like do you
- 6:35sit out and sort of plan things out as you start different writing cycles and
- 6:40say like we want to go in this direction and we want to leave that
- 6:42behind, or there's the music. It just I don't know. Actually that's
- 6:46a good question. I probably DJ should probably be hit up so that one
- 6:50I Sily just give him the theme of how I'm feeling or what I want
- 6:56to talk about, and then he just he's a wizard man. He's just
- 6:59got this ear and yeah, he can write guitars and as really good composers.
- 7:04So we don't really say, oh, we don't want to do that,
- 7:08we don't want to do this, let's try We just basically, I
- 7:12just want to get creative and yells give them the theme and then I think
- 7:15I might send them some drummer bass songs and I'll be like, bro,
- 7:17this is sick. Let's go let's try something like that, and then he'll
- 7:21yeah, he'll put all the different stuff into the into the mixture and it
- 7:26comes out. Yeah. You're part way through a chore supporting the release of
- 7:30Rochester Mate. So how's how the show has been going? Yeah, they'd
- 7:34be pretty fun. So we started in the North Island last week, so
- 7:39we did Wellington on the Friday and then Auckland on the Sad Day and I
- 7:44was pretty rowdy. I think we'll probably drunk too much and got carried away,
- 7:48but it was great fun. The punters were going hard. We just
- 7:53love playing shows, so it's always fun to actually get back on stage and
- 7:58you play the new set at new Song and the two new songs in there,
- 8:01which is cool when everyone seems to be lapping it up. And then
- 8:03we hit the South Island this week. We're doing dneda and on Friday,
- 8:09crush Juts on Sad Day and then filming a chiky video on the Sunday.
- 8:13So it's all go, oh, I know, if anyone's around either of
- 8:16those areas, where can they get tickets for the shows from? Yeah,
- 8:20so they are now link Tree or they can find them on Cosmic ticketing.
- 8:24They're pretty cheap. I think it's like fifteen bucks and then twenty on the
- 8:26door. We just kind of want to we don't want to price ourselves out,
- 8:31and we just want people to come along and have fun and be in
- 8:35a welcoming sort of group and yeah, just leaveing on cut loose. Really.
- 8:41Yeah? Are you completed a headlining tour of Australia last year? So
- 8:45how did you go over here? Did you make some new fans? I
- 8:48think so? Yeah. I mean it was we kind of got Delta pretty
- 8:52shitty hand. I booked the tour book this window and there was no big
- 9:01bands and stuff like that, and I was like, yeah, this is
- 9:03perfect. We're going to have like a really good weekend and not having any
- 9:07clashes and try and get some core people, to get people to come out
- 9:09and actually hear of us because you know, we've never played Australia before,
- 9:13and then ended up clashing with August Bingered and Kopla Khan and Kettle Decap a
- 9:20few other bands, so then there was like six shows on each night.
- 9:24But Brisbane was a bit of a tough one on a Thursday, but we
- 9:28still got about forty people through the door, which is cool because no one
- 9:31knew who we were. And then Sydney was fun Fear. A few people
- 9:35came to that, and then we finished off of Melbourne on a sad day
- 9:37and yeah they're just blasts away. It was fucking awesome. So we had
- 9:43fun. I think a lot of people liked us Kiwis, so that's good.
- 9:48So we're hoping to come back later on this year. So yeah,
- 9:52hopefully we left a good impression last time. Very good Corro, Well thanks
- 9:58for your time. I was just speaking with you. This single Obnoxious is
- 10:01out now. She's a fucking cracker. Boys have got shows in Dunedin this
- 10:05Friday price show She's Saturday, so get yourself along. I'll have a listen.
