- 0:00Speaker 1: This is The Bad Hire, the show where epic hiring
- 0:03Speaker 1: failures and remarkable wins fuel better hiring. I'm your host,
- 0:07Speaker 1: Ken Monroe, and each week we dive into real-life stories
- 0:10Speaker 1: with HR pros, recruiters, and leaders who've seen it all.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Because let's face it, everyone remembers The Bad Hire.
- 0:18Speaker 3: The Bad Hire.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Hey, welcome to The Bad Hire. We've got another episode
- 0:30Speaker 1: coming up, and I'm with Nathan and with Dallin Wortham.
- 0:34Speaker 1: He's the founder and CEO of Charter Connect. Happy to
- 0:37Speaker 1: have you, brother.
- 0:37Speaker 3: Oh, it's great to be here. I'm so stoked. This
- 0:41Speaker 3: is going to be fun.
- 0:42Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. So tell me a little bit about Charter Connect.
- 0:44Speaker 1: I wanted to let people understand what you do. The
- 0:47Speaker 1: reason I love it, you're a CEO, and you're hiring people.
- 0:50Speaker 1: You've got a growing company, and so you've got that. Yeah.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Maybe you have a story of your own, but I
- 0:55Speaker 1: know you've had a long career, too, you could talk about.
- 0:57Speaker 1: So what's up? Tell me about Charter Connect.
- 0:59Speaker 3: Yeah, so I was an airline pilot. And to become
- 1:03Speaker 3: an airline pilot, I worked at a market agency to
- 1:06Speaker 3: help clients grow their company. And one of our clients
- 1:10Speaker 3: was a charter school. And it went really well. They
- 1:13Speaker 3: kind of word of mouth, told their friends. And pretty
- 1:16Speaker 3: soon I had, you know, dozens of charter schools wanting
- 1:19Speaker 3: me to help with them. with their marketing. And so
- 1:22Speaker 3: I stopped flying and I started a business, had no
- 1:25Speaker 3: idea how to do anything in regards to running a
- 1:28Speaker 3: business and made a ton of mistakes along the way.
- 1:31Speaker 3: But it's been a big blessing, a good experience. And
- 1:35Speaker 3: here we are now with hopefully a little bit more
- 1:37Speaker 3: knowledge than I had five years ago when I started it.
- 1:40Speaker 1: Yeah, that's kind of a crazy path from Airline pilot
- 1:43Speaker 1: to entrepreneur.
- 1:44Speaker 3: Yeah, it's been drinking through a fire hose.
- 1:47Speaker 1: You're in business with your brother, maybe, right?
- 1:48Speaker 3: Yeah, I have a twin brother that looks pretty much
- 1:50Speaker 3: just like me. If I take off my glasses, it's
- 1:53Speaker 3: like you can't tell.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Really?
- 1:54Speaker 3: And so now I'm Sean, and now I'm Dallin again.
- 1:57Speaker 1: Okay, I didn't know that. I mean, I knew it
- 2:00Speaker 1: was your brother. I don't think I knew it was
- 2:01Speaker 1: your twin.
- 2:02Speaker 3: Yeah, so if you want a cameo, I'll just... Yeah,
- 2:05Speaker 3: so it's been really good having someone to be able
- 2:08Speaker 3: to ride the battle with.
- 2:10Speaker 1: Yeah, for sure. That's awesome. So you know what we
- 2:13Speaker 1: do here? We started the Bad Hire. I just love
- 2:16Speaker 1: the idea of every time I'm hanging around with talent
- 2:20Speaker 1: acquisition pros and recruiters and stuff, when we're just chopping
- 2:25Speaker 1: it up, it almost always turns to guys telling funny stories,
- 2:30Speaker 1: just about interview blowups or somebody showed up crazy on
- 2:34Speaker 1: the first day or meltdown later. And as I was
- 2:38Speaker 1: talking about, you know, doing a show. I was like,
- 2:40Speaker 1: I just, I don't want to try to be an
- 2:42Speaker 1: expert to anybody and try to like, I got to
- 2:44Speaker 1: come up with some words of wisdom every single show.
- 2:46Speaker 1: I was like, I just want to have fun and, uh,
- 2:48Speaker 1: and chop it up and, and, and, and enjoy. And
- 2:51Speaker 1: so came up with the idea of the bad hire.
- 2:54Speaker 1: And we just, you know, the goal is to get
- 2:56Speaker 1: people to submit their stories to us. Right. Real life
- 2:59Speaker 1: stories is just where hires went wrong. And I do
- 3:02Speaker 1: think there's learning there.
- 3:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Right? You, you know, yeah. I mean, as we talk
- 3:07Speaker 1: about them, you can be like, bro, I know that story.
- 3:10Speaker 1: And you know, we probably have all learned a lesson.
- 3:12Speaker 2: I realize there's a lot of stories out there.
- 3:14Speaker 1: Yeah. A lot of bad. Yeah. That's what's crazy is,
- 3:17Speaker 1: is the amount of stories that we hear and, uh,
- 3:20Speaker 1: just some of the shenanigans that go on in interviews
- 3:23Speaker 1: and all that kind of fun stuff. So, so what
- 3:24Speaker 1: we did, we put together the show. I mean, we're
- 3:26Speaker 1: like 10 episodes in or something. This, maybe this is
- 3:28Speaker 1: episode nine. And then, um, to, to encourage folks to, uh,
- 3:34Speaker 1: to submit their stories to us, we put together a $ 10, 000 contest.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Best story of the season, the season that we'll be
- 3:40Speaker 1: around 24 shows. Best story of the season, our producers
- 3:44Speaker 1: who helped put this together, they'll help select that. We'll
- 3:47Speaker 1: choose it, give somebody $ 10, 000 for the best story. You
- 3:51Speaker 1: love that, right? So are you going to submit one today?
- 3:54Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 3:54Speaker 1: For sure you're telling a story now.
- 3:56Speaker 3: I'm going to submit $ 100 if it's $ 10, 000.
- 3:58Speaker 2: Right.
- 3:58Speaker 1: And what we need is great. We need great marketing
- 4:02Speaker 1: to help us get people to submit stories. So, you know,
- 4:06Speaker 1: we'll just lean into you for that because that's what
- 4:08Speaker 1: you're an expert at. Yeah, that's awesome. Yeah, so that's
- 4:14Speaker 1: why I started it. And the first, I mean, I
- 4:18Speaker 1: am having a T-shirt made. You've got to listen to
- 4:20Speaker 1: some of the shows that come out. And when you
- 4:22Speaker 1: hear this one, I'm having a t-shirt made that says,
- 4:25Speaker 1: don't be a cat nuzzler. Is it nuzzler? Nuzzler? Don't
- 4:28Speaker 1: be a cat nuzzler. Yeah.
- 4:30Speaker 2: It's a memorable word.
- 4:31Speaker 1: Yeah. I'm going to get it. Don't be a real
- 4:33Speaker 1: small cat nuzzler. It looks like I'm a cat nuzzler
- 4:37Speaker 1: when you look at it close. Yeah. That's an episode.
- 4:39Speaker 1: It's just a great story. Is it episode two?
- 4:41Speaker 2: Yeah. Got a Teams call, video call, literally showing up
- 4:45Speaker 2: to his Teams calls shirtless. more or less snuggling with his.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Cat in bed. Yeah. Laying his cat in bed on
- 4:50Speaker 1: a team.
- 4:51Speaker 2: He knew the camera was on and still was bold.
- 4:53Speaker 1: And I saw a video this week you shared with me.
- 4:55Speaker 1: Maybe like someone telling a story about somebody who just
- 5:00Speaker 1: laid in bed. Yeah.
- 5:01Speaker 2: On a client call like shirtless in bed hanging out
- 5:04Speaker 2: with their cat.
- 5:04Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Maybe.
- 5:05Speaker 1: I don't know. Maybe that's how you read. Maybe you're
- 5:08Speaker 1: when you're not dressed up like this. Maybe maybe that's
- 5:10Speaker 1: what you're doing at work.
- 5:11Speaker 3: My cat at home.
- 5:13Speaker 1: Yeah. So I don't know. So Anyway, we take those stories.
- 5:17Speaker 1: These guys source some stories right now. We're sourcing stories
- 5:21Speaker 1: off the internet to draw them and get them into
- 5:22Speaker 1: the show. And then just, you know, really hopeful for
- 5:26Speaker 1: engaging an audience that will, would love to tell their
- 5:29Speaker 1: stories and have some fun. And so that's what we're
- 5:31Speaker 1: up to. Yeah. Yeah. Good stuff. Awesome.
- 5:33Speaker 3: Awesome. Awesome.
- 5:34Speaker 1: All right. So let me, I'll kick it off and
- 5:37Speaker 1: I'll read, I'll read one to you.
- 5:39Speaker 3: Okay.
- 5:39Speaker 1: And then, and you know, we'll just.
- 5:42Speaker 3: I'm excited.
- 5:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:42Speaker 1: See what the reaction is. So this is, Hey, I
- 5:45Speaker 1: work at HR at a company with over 500 employees,
- 5:49Speaker 1: so I'm used to dealing with wild situations. At least
- 5:53Speaker 1: once a week, I end up dealing with an incident.
- 5:56Speaker 1: We had to fire a young woman for repeatedly taunting
- 5:59Speaker 1: and harassing another employee. It wasn't a snap decision. There
- 6:03Speaker 1: had been complaints, documentation, warnings, but eventually it was clear
- 6:08Speaker 1: she couldn't stay. As part of the process, I escorted
- 6:13Speaker 1: her back to her desk. This is, you know, everyone
- 6:17Speaker 1: hates this part of letting someone go when you've got
- 6:19Speaker 1: to do the proverbial walk out. You know, the walk out.
- 6:22Speaker 1: See that. You're just like, oh, this part sucks. Okay.
- 6:25Speaker 1: I escorted her back to the desk so she could
- 6:27Speaker 1: gather her personal belongings. Usually that part is uneventful. I mean,
- 6:34Speaker 1: it's like, you want to shame. You're just like, let
- 6:36Speaker 1: me just get out of here. People grab a coat,
- 6:39Speaker 1: a few knickknacks, you know, quietly head out. Not this time.
- 6:42Speaker 1: She opens her desk drawer, reached in, pulls out a
- 6:45Speaker 1: full-size bottle of wine. It's a screw top. It was
- 6:50Speaker 1: already there. So she cracks open this bottle of wine.
- 6:53Speaker 1: I'm assuming it was a screw top there. But before
- 6:59Speaker 1: this HR person could even process it, she tips it
- 7:04Speaker 1: back and just started chugging the wine. This is post-firing. Oh, yeah.
- 7:09Speaker 1: This is her rebellious... You fired me. I'm going to
- 7:12Speaker 1: get drunk on the job.
- 7:12Speaker 3: She could have done this out in the parking lot. No,
- 7:14Speaker 3: she wanted to do this.
- 7:15Speaker 1: Yeah. So she... Yeah. She chugs the whole thing. That's
- 7:21Speaker 1: a lot.
- 7:22Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:23Speaker 1: In college, there's a story. Okay? So that's a lot.
- 7:28Speaker 1: She then pulls out a second one.
- 7:29Speaker 3: Oh.
- 7:30Speaker 1: All right.
- 7:31Speaker 2: She had a collection in there.
- 7:32Speaker 1: And did the same thing. So she's now... As people
- 7:35Speaker 1: are standing there, she's just being rebellious... And she drinks
- 7:39Speaker 1: the second bottle of wine. And just right in front
- 7:43Speaker 1: of this person, right in the middle of the office,
- 7:45Speaker 1: the lady says, it's so surreal that for a second
- 7:48Speaker 1: I didn't even know what to do. I didn't know
- 7:51Speaker 1: how to stop her. Didn't know if she should call
- 7:53Speaker 1: security or just let it go. But they ended up
- 7:55Speaker 1: calling the police. I assume two bottles of wine quickly
- 8:00Speaker 1: would make you pretty belligerent if you were angry. And
- 8:03Speaker 1: by the time the cops arrived, she had completely passed out. Well,
- 8:09Speaker 1: and so she was unresponsive, glassy-eyed, staring into space, and
- 8:12Speaker 1: it got serious enough, they had to call an ambulance. Oh,
- 8:15Speaker 1: my gosh. So you think the story would end there,
- 8:17Speaker 1: but later they had to go through some of her
- 8:21Speaker 1: company email and found that she had lots of stranger,
- 8:24Speaker 1: dozens of notes she had written to herself plotting stuff
- 8:28Speaker 1: against the employees. Plotting revenge. Yeah, plotting revenge on different employees. Oh,
- 8:32Speaker 1: my gosh.
- 8:33Speaker 2: At least they caught her before anything happened.
- 8:35Speaker 1: Right? I just, you know, I think it's, Interesting how
- 8:40Speaker 1: sometimes just people just like don't like they might actually
- 8:43Speaker 1: be you start out good and then something happens and
- 8:46Speaker 1: they go off the rails. Clearly, if someone's bringing bottles
- 8:49Speaker 1: of wine to work, there's like this multiple something you
- 8:53Speaker 1: missed on the way in. Yeah. Or something the manager's overlooking. Yeah.
- 8:57Speaker 2: And some people don't mind burning bridges. They're like, well,
- 9:00Speaker 2: I'm out of here.
- 9:01Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. Remember the guy who was caught sleeping and
- 9:04Speaker 1: the story about the guy sleeping on the job behind him? Yeah.
- 9:08Speaker 1: He rips his shirt off and goes Hulk on everyone
- 9:10Speaker 1: on the way out, screaming at everyone. Like, well, we've
- 9:13Speaker 1: come this far. I'm not coming back. This is not
- 9:14Speaker 1: a why, why, why. This is a chug, chug, chug event.
- 9:16Speaker 1: You know, it's like, actually, I actually, you know, this
- 9:21Speaker 1: one actually kind of hurt my soul a little bit.
- 9:23Speaker 1: It's like, wow, you know, that's just not a great
- 9:24Speaker 1: place for someone to be. Yeah. Yeah. She did. Man. But,
- 9:30Speaker 1: you know. what these, what some of these HR people face,
- 9:34Speaker 1: you know, it did strike me early in the deal
- 9:37Speaker 1: as you get, as you get bigger and you start
- 9:39Speaker 1: growing your organization, you, you, you, you have these HR
- 9:46Speaker 1: issues and they just become, you know, it's just bigger
- 9:49Speaker 1: people's lives. Yeah. You know, I mean, who knows what happens, but, and,
- 9:54Speaker 1: and the HR is constantly intervening and, you know, this
- 9:57Speaker 1: drama over here, that drama, this person's, struggle with this
- 10:01Speaker 1: or this, you know, maybe some pressure outside or conflict internal.
- 10:06Speaker 1: You know, there's all kinds of things. You know, those
- 10:09Speaker 1: HR folks are just absolute heroes for all they have
- 10:13Speaker 1: to deal with. Yeah.
- 10:16Speaker 3: I mean, I'm just thinking she probably didn't. maybe have
- 10:19Speaker 3: money for an uber so she's like there's only one
- 10:21Speaker 3: way i'm getting out of here and it has sirens
- 10:24Speaker 3: on top but it's either a police car or an ambulance.
- 10:28Speaker 2: Yeah it's free ride it's free ride i'll get carried
- 10:30Speaker 2: out yeah yeah yeah oh my god damn.
- 10:34Speaker 1: All right a while back i had an intern who
- 10:37Speaker 1: to this day still stands out as the worst i've
- 10:41Speaker 1: ever supervised and we've heard some bad intern.
- 10:45Speaker 3: Stories Interns are fun. Those are fun stories, though.
- 10:48Speaker 1: Yeah. Just speaking of interns, you know, I'm always blown
- 10:53Speaker 1: away now by, I think this story, I think I
- 10:56Speaker 1: read it before we came on. It's a little bit
- 10:59Speaker 1: of that kind of entitlement. You know, hey, I do this.
- 11:03Speaker 1: I don't do that. You know, you're finding that a
- 11:06Speaker 1: lot in Gen Zers' resistance to flexibility. Yeah, yeah. Definitely
- 11:14Speaker 1: more selective. Yeah, yeah. So from day one, he was off.
- 11:20Speaker 1: He wasn't shy. He wasn't shy. He was inappropriate, constantly
- 11:25Speaker 1: asking how much money that I made. So how much
- 11:29Speaker 1: money do you make? Bro, tell me. How much money
- 11:30Speaker 1: do you make? And not just once or twice. He'd
- 11:32Speaker 1: bring it up all the time. We'd be in the
- 11:35Speaker 1: middle of working on something, and he'd just drop, so seriously,
- 11:38Speaker 1: how much money do you make? Wow. Persistent. You get
- 11:42Speaker 1: that from, like, if you watch enough social media and
- 11:44Speaker 1: you watch these things where there's actually these guys who
- 11:46Speaker 1: just walk up to people and say, hey, how much
- 11:48Speaker 1: money do you make?
- 11:49Speaker 3: It's like a normal thing then.
- 11:50Speaker 1: Yeah, just like, yes. Yeah. Tell me how you, you know,
- 11:53Speaker 1: and of course they target people who look like they
- 11:55Speaker 1: have money and then get them to tell their story, right?
- 11:57Speaker 1: But still, a little bit different. Not in work, bro. Yeah. Right?
- 12:02Speaker 1: And I'm not sure it was for the same educational
- 12:05Speaker 1: reasons the guy that does it, you know, on the street.
- 12:09Speaker 3: Well, go ahead I mean when you're an intern like
- 12:11Speaker 3: your job is to kind of like learn absorb and
- 12:15Speaker 3: like I mean kind of just shut up and color
- 12:17Speaker 3: right and to be out asking questions to your potential future.
- 12:23Speaker 2: Yeah like what salary should I aim for yeah your
- 12:25Speaker 2: next couple years.
- 12:26Speaker 1: 15 years from now when I'm your age I just
- 12:28Speaker 1: want to make sure if I make.
- 12:30Speaker 2: It yeah exactly it'll be the sand and cherries.
- 12:33Speaker 1: How much it's not asking how much is that person
- 12:36Speaker 1: that started last year how much are they making So
- 12:38Speaker 1: how much do you make? When I gave him assignments,
- 12:41Speaker 1: he'd look me dead in the eye and say, that's
- 12:43Speaker 1: not my job. Sometimes we wonder why people stick with
- 12:47Speaker 1: these people. Imagine hearing that from an interim. And then
- 12:50Speaker 1: it escalated. He started asking personal questions. So out of line,
- 12:54Speaker 1: I almost couldn't believe that he said it out loud.
- 12:57Speaker 1: One day, out of nowhere, he blurts, so do you
- 13:00Speaker 1: like adult movies? At that point, I was documenting everything.
- 13:06Speaker 1: I finally reported him to HR. And they didn't even hesitate.
- 13:10Speaker 1: He was out of the internship program immediately. I thought
- 13:13Speaker 1: that was the end of it, but no. He now
- 13:15Speaker 1: goes around telling people, I ruined his life. Oh. Don't
- 13:20Speaker 1: we get that a lot from these folks who really
- 13:23Speaker 1: crash and burn? They've got really weird, odd behavior, not
- 13:27Speaker 1: great productive behavior. Yeah. And then they're angry when they're like, terminated.
- 13:34Speaker 1: Somehow it's not their fault.
- 13:36Speaker 3: It's almost like when the culmination of the bad thing
- 13:39Speaker 3: finally happens, it's almost like they tag the person next
- 13:43Speaker 3: to them when it happens. It's like burned in their brain.
- 13:46Speaker 1: It's your fault.
- 13:47Speaker 3: You were there when the bad thing happened, so you're
- 13:50Speaker 3: the bad juju.
- 13:52Speaker 1: My life was great up until you. I was able
- 13:54Speaker 1: to ask any question I wanted up until... You still.
- 13:57Speaker 3: Haven't told me how much money you made.
- 13:59Speaker 1: There is a need for... In fact, I think we're
- 14:05Speaker 1: actually doing some here in another month for just pure
- 14:08Speaker 1: business etiquette training. Just how to be a pro. How
- 14:15Speaker 1: to be professional. Yeah, how to be a pro. Yeah,
- 14:17Speaker 1: how to be normal. And it's really needed. I get
- 14:22Speaker 1: it all the time. I don't know that I'm disappointed,
- 14:27Speaker 1: but when I see young folks coming up in their
- 14:32Speaker 1: career And watching them struggle with, you know, how to act,
- 14:37Speaker 1: you know, what's appropriate, you know. And I'm not trying
- 14:41Speaker 1: to create some type of crazy over-controlling culture. But there
- 14:45Speaker 1: is just a way to act that's just like positive
- 14:47Speaker 1: juju into your organization. And that comes through professionalism and
- 14:50Speaker 1: knowing how to act, you know. Yeah. And that's not
- 14:55Speaker 1: my job is– Never a good thing to say when
- 14:58Speaker 1: you're an intern. I don't even like it. I don't
- 15:00Speaker 1: care who you are in the organization. If you looked
- 15:02Speaker 1: at me and said, that's not my job, we were like, bro,
- 15:04Speaker 1: what does that mean?
- 15:06Speaker 2: I feel like you're a positive impact on your culture
- 15:08Speaker 2: when you're able to be like, oh, I'll take that on.
- 15:10Speaker 2: I'll help support whatever way I can. Instead of just
- 15:13Speaker 2: being like, no, thanks.
- 15:15Speaker 3: There's such a difference between that's not my job and
- 15:18Speaker 3: setting up boundaries and saying, hey, this is my priority
- 15:21Speaker 3: right now. If you want me to be able to
- 15:23Speaker 3: do that, I can, but... do you, would you like
- 15:25Speaker 3: me to let this other priority go so I can
- 15:27Speaker 3: help you with that? Like, that's okay. Like setting boundaries,
- 15:30Speaker 3: but then, you know, so like, that's not my job.
- 15:31Speaker 3: I was like, okay, well actually nothing's your job anymore.
- 15:34Speaker 1: Cause you're gone. You don't have to worry about it.
- 15:37Speaker 1: I am not going to tread on it.
- 15:38Speaker 3: It's not your job anymore. Yeah.
- 15:41Speaker 1: Before we dive back into the chaos on the bad hire,
- 15:44Speaker 1: this episode is brought to you by Bchex. Hiring shouldn't

- 16:25Speaker 1: Who's up? Who's got one? You want to share?
- 16:28Speaker 2: I think Dallin has some stories of his own.
- 16:30Speaker 1: I think Dallin, because he's a baller. Dallin, you got
- 16:33Speaker 1: some stories?
- 16:33Speaker 3: Well, this is perfect because about, I don't know, maybe
- 16:37Speaker 3: two months ago, right before I got the invite to
- 16:40Speaker 3: be here, I was having dinner with a friend of
- 16:42Speaker 3: mine who, they were an owner of a franchise that
- 16:47Speaker 3: sells cookies and it rhymes with stumble.
- 16:50Speaker 1: Oh, wow.
- 16:52Speaker 3: They had a few different locations.
- 16:53Speaker 1: Oh, by the way, I love it. I love Bumble Cookies.
- 16:55Speaker 1: I love Bumble Cookies.
- 16:56Speaker 3: Yeah. And so they have, they recently sold, but they
- 17:01Speaker 3: had multiple different locations. And I can, I mean, this
- 17:06Speaker 3: lives rent free in my mind, this story. They had
- 17:09Speaker 3: an employee, we'll call him Richard. And Richard was showing
- 17:15Speaker 3: some inappropriate media to his coworkers when they immediately went
- 17:19Speaker 3: to the manager to say, hey, like, This is what
- 17:21Speaker 3: Richard's doing. The new guy's kind of being a little weird.
- 17:24Speaker 3: And so obviously they had to let Richard go because
- 17:27Speaker 3: Richard's doing some inappropriate things. They walking out to his
- 17:33Speaker 3: car and he's kicking and screaming, not wanting to leave,
- 17:37Speaker 3: demanding an explanation. But then they say, hey, come back
- 17:40Speaker 3: on Monday for your final check and whatnot. And we'll
- 17:45Speaker 3: send you on your way.
- 17:46Speaker 1: And so.
- 17:47Speaker 3: He didn't want to come back in person because he
- 17:49Speaker 3: was embarrassed. He was completely... Yeah, totally.
- 17:51Speaker 1: I cannot imagine.
- 17:52Speaker 3: Yeah. But they said, no, you need to come in
- 17:55Speaker 3: person because we had the paper check for you. Just
- 17:57Speaker 3: come in. And so this man, completely covered in black
- 18:02Speaker 3: with a ski mask, sunglasses, everything, walks in and goes
- 18:07Speaker 3: up to the counter and doesn't say a word. He's
- 18:10Speaker 3: just standing there. And the person... Yeah, like, can I
- 18:14Speaker 3: help you?
- 18:15Speaker 1: Can I help you?
- 18:16Speaker 3: Yeah, do you need anything? wouldn't respond. And so after
- 18:19Speaker 3: about 20 seconds of just like no response from this
- 18:22Speaker 3: man all in black who's probably scaring her, she goes
- 18:25Speaker 3: back to the manager and says, there's a guy in black.
- 18:29Speaker 3: I think it's Richard.
- 18:31Speaker 1: It looks like Richard's body.
- 18:33Speaker 3: He won't respond. I think he probably came in for
- 18:36Speaker 3: his check. And so they go out and like, Richard,
- 18:40Speaker 3: is that you? Nothing. Won't say anything. And so he
- 18:43Speaker 3: finally on a piece of paper writes I am the
- 18:47Speaker 3: twin brother of Richard.
- 18:49Speaker 1: Oh, okay. This is Ricky.
- 18:52Speaker 3: And so he passes them the note.
- 18:53Speaker 1: This is a twin story. The twin, right.
- 18:56Speaker 3: And I'm a twin, so.
- 18:57Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 18:59Speaker 3: If you really are the twin brother of Richard, like,
- 19:01Speaker 3: we can't give you the check. Can you give me
- 19:02Speaker 3: your ID? And after, you know, everything, he finally gives
- 19:07Speaker 3: them the ID, and they pass the check. He goes out.
- 19:12Speaker 3: But that's not the end of the story. he keeps
- 19:15Speaker 3: coming back to kind of taunt. And he starts writing
- 19:19Speaker 3: things on the windows and kind of vandalism and things
- 19:23Speaker 3: of that nature. And then they get like a, I
- 19:28Speaker 3: don't know if it was a, something legally where he
- 19:31Speaker 3: couldn't come around anymore.
- 19:34Speaker 1: Like a restraining order kind of thing?
- 19:36Speaker 3: Yeah. You think it's over, but then he starts doing
- 19:40Speaker 3: door dash orders.
- 19:43Speaker 2: I got your food.
- 19:44Speaker 1: No, so he's ordering from this place.
- 19:46Speaker 3: Yeah, he is now.
- 19:47Speaker 1: He's giving his paycheck back to him.
- 19:49Speaker 3: Yeah, he is now.
- 19:50Speaker 1: Longer.
- 19:50Speaker 2: Next level strategy.
- 19:51Speaker 3: The twin of Richard, and he's no longer this black
- 19:54Speaker 3: masked man. He's just Richard. And they're like, Richard, you
- 19:56Speaker 3: can't be here. And he keeps taking these DoorDash orders
- 19:59Speaker 3: and finally like, Richard, go home, Richard. You can't be
- 20:02Speaker 3: here anymore, Richard. And they're like screaming at him and
- 20:04Speaker 3: just like, shoot, shoot, get out of here, Richard. And
- 20:06Speaker 3: so now he's kind of... I mean, I've heard that
- 20:09Speaker 3: he doesn't come around anymore, but pretty wild story. Dang,
- 20:13Speaker 3: that's crazy. Yeah.
- 20:15Speaker 2: So he finally stopped coming around.
- 20:17Speaker 3: Yeah, maybe.
- 20:19Speaker 2: And they never confirmed if it was actually him or
- 20:21Speaker 2: a twin brother, because with the ID, like to say.
- 20:25Speaker 1: Twin brother's ID. Yeah, I don't know. Yeah, I don't know.
- 20:28Speaker 1: I think some people lose, it's kind of crazy, the
- 20:30Speaker 1: stories that we get of people who, like when they
- 20:33Speaker 1: lose their job, and they should have.
- 20:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 20:37Speaker 1: Right? And they, it just reveals, it's like there must,
- 20:41Speaker 1: there's like this, there's like a different person right under
- 20:44Speaker 1: the surface that they were just trying to conceal.
- 20:46Speaker 3: Yes.
- 20:47Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 20:47Speaker 3: And, and then.
- 20:48Speaker 1: It comes out. You know, it just comes out.
- 20:50Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 20:50Speaker 1: And it happens a lot in retail because, you know,
- 20:54Speaker 1: you know, retail just has such high demand for people.
- 20:57Speaker 1: It's so hard to find, you know. Well. You just.
- 21:01Speaker 3: And I feel like, you know, when you're a kid
- 21:03Speaker 3: and you're like playing hide and seek and you're hiding
- 21:05Speaker 3: and someone finds us like, hey, I see you. you're
- 21:08Speaker 3: right there, and you don't move. I see you, you
- 21:11Speaker 3: can move, and you're still not moving. Oh, I don't
- 21:13Speaker 3: want to be caught. I feel like that kind of
- 21:16Speaker 3: happens when people fall into this, I don't know, fantasy
- 21:20Speaker 3: land of this lie, and they just don't want to
- 21:24Speaker 3: let go of it because it's painful to realize, I
- 21:27Speaker 3: got caught.
- 21:29Speaker 1: Humility, embarrassment, humility are really powerful things. Really powerful emotions,
- 21:37Speaker 1: embarrassment that stop people from being able to take accountability,
- 21:42Speaker 1: to tell lies and to do other things. That is
- 21:46Speaker 1: such a tough emotion. So, Nathan, what's up? What you got, brother?
- 21:51Speaker 1: All right.
- 21:51Speaker 2: I don't have any of my own, my down ass.
- 21:53Speaker 2: I think these are from Reddit. All right. As an
- 21:58Speaker 2: office manager, I once hired a new employee. On his
- 22:01Speaker 2: very first day, he was told to fill out his
- 22:03Speaker 2: new hire paperwork, pretty standard stuff. I put him into
- 22:07Speaker 2: an office. He came back a little while later. He
- 22:10Speaker 2: handed me the forms. I scanned them over to HR
- 22:13Speaker 2: like usual. And about 20 minutes later, I get a
- 22:17Speaker 2: call from the HR rep. And the HR rep is laughing.
- 22:20Speaker 2: And she tells me that he's filled out his name
- 22:22Speaker 2: in all the forms as Batman. So I sit Batman down.
- 22:28Speaker 2: I sit him down. I tell him to redo the
- 22:29Speaker 2: paperwork with his actual legal name. He nods.
- 22:33Speaker 1: No problem.
- 22:34Speaker 2: Sorry about that. He fills it out again, and he
- 22:37Speaker 2: hands it back, and it says Batman.
- 22:39Speaker 3: It doesn't say, like, Bruce Wayne.
- 22:41Speaker 1: No, still it's Batman. No, he's not giving away his ID.
- 22:43Speaker 1: That would have been good. That would have been good.
- 22:46Speaker 2: By the end of the day, I had him on
- 22:48Speaker 2: a call with HR where they explained very directly, if
- 22:51Speaker 2: he does not fill out this paperwork correctly, he would
- 22:53Speaker 2: not have the job. And it should have ended there,
- 22:56Speaker 2: but it did not. From that day forward, it was
- 22:59Speaker 2: one ridiculous thing after another with this guy. At least
- 23:01Speaker 2: once a week, he'd be in my office for some
- 23:04Speaker 2: weird issue. Then one morning, he comes in completely serious
- 23:07Speaker 2: and announces that he's officially, legally changed his name to Batman.
- 23:12Speaker 2: So he saw that came through.
- 23:14Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 23:15Speaker 2: So fine, we'll give him a fresh W-4, new paperwork.
- 23:18Speaker 2: He fills it out again, proudly signing Batman.
- 23:21Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 23:22Speaker 2: But then HR comes back and says, hey, we need
- 23:25Speaker 2: proof of your name change for the system, like legal proof.
- 23:30Speaker 2: So I told him he needs to provide documentation.
- 23:33Speaker 1: He said, no problem.
- 23:34Speaker 2: I'll bring it tomorrow. The next day comes and the
- 23:36Speaker 2: next day and the next week. Weeks go by, excuse
- 23:40Speaker 2: after excuse, and he lost it.
- 23:41Speaker 1: He forgot it.
- 23:42Speaker 2: It was at home. Finally, we figured out the truth.
- 23:45Speaker 2: He never actually changed it at all. He just wanted
- 23:46Speaker 2: to be called Batman.
- 23:47Speaker 1: Yeah. Bro, I get it, man. I love that.
- 23:50Speaker 2: Part of me is on his side a little bit.
- 23:51Speaker 1: Yeah, I know. I mean, if you could be called Batman,
- 23:54Speaker 1: you know. Dallin, what if you could just, like, tell people,
- 23:57Speaker 1: just call me Superman, bro. Yeah.
- 23:58Speaker 2: It's super confusing, though, because I guess they know his
- 24:01Speaker 2: name in the interview process. Like, is he on LinkedIn
- 24:04Speaker 2: as Batman?
- 24:05Speaker 1: I just got to tell you, some of these stories, man, there's, like,
- 24:08Speaker 1: there's a sign so early, and they don't, like, just cut,
- 24:12Speaker 1: you know. Yeah. They just keep going, and you're, like...
- 24:16Speaker 1: Have you ever seen that TikTok where the guy... goes
- 24:20Speaker 1: to interviews online and he's just like, like one of them,
- 24:24Speaker 1: he's like sitting at a drive-thru eating and he's like, no, no, no,
- 24:28Speaker 1: I'm not at a drive-thru. And she's like, you're clearly
- 24:30Speaker 1: at a drive-thru. And he's like, no, no, no, I'm
- 24:31Speaker 1: not at a drive-thru. I'm a French fry and I
- 24:33Speaker 1: don't get stunned. Like how long they're like, no, you aren't.
- 24:36Speaker 1: And they haven't, you know, tried to get back to
- 24:38Speaker 1: the interview. And I'm like, some people are just desperate
- 24:42Speaker 1: to hire, I guess. It just really speaks to how
- 24:46Speaker 1: hard it is to find people Great talent. You know,
- 24:49Speaker 1: you're just like, wow. If you're willing to stay on
- 24:52Speaker 1: the phone after, you know, and this guy does crazy
- 24:56Speaker 1: stunts with him.
- 24:58Speaker 2: Maybe he's the best crusader in accounting and maybe he's
- 25:01Speaker 2: been the best. I don't know.
- 25:02Speaker 3: I mean, we're just taught ever since we're little, like,
- 25:05Speaker 3: don't judge a book by its cover. Like, give people,
- 25:07Speaker 3: you know, a chance to treat others like you like
- 25:09Speaker 3: to be treated and balancing that with, like, this dude
- 25:13Speaker 3: thinks he's Batman. All right.
- 25:17Speaker 1: What's up? All right.
- 25:18Speaker 2: Second one, last one for the day. At a small
- 25:20Speaker 2: company I worked for, we hired a receptionist. Let's call
- 25:23Speaker 2: her Jen. At first, she came across as friendly, maybe
- 25:26Speaker 2: a little bit quirky, but I started noticing some small
- 25:29Speaker 2: lies in her stories. Nothing huge at first, just weird
- 25:32Speaker 2: details that didn't really quite add up. I didn't really
- 25:34Speaker 2: think much of it. One day, HR sent out an
- 25:38Speaker 2: all-staff email and it said that Jen's husband had passed away.
- 25:41Speaker 2: And so naturally, everyone had felt awful. We collected money,
- 25:45Speaker 2: sent flowers. We gave her two full weeks off. for bereavement.
- 25:49Speaker 2: And when she came back, she really looked the part.
- 25:51Speaker 1: She was shaken. She was quiet.
- 25:53Speaker 2: You know, the whole office was walking on eggshells around her.
- 25:56Speaker 2: A few weeks later, I happened to be covering the
- 25:58Speaker 2: desk for her when the phone rang. And I answered
- 26:00Speaker 2: as a man's voice on the other end and said,
- 26:03Speaker 2: this is Frank. It's Jen's husband. And I froze. Frank,
- 26:09Speaker 2: the husband that we all thought was gone, was on.
- 26:10Speaker 1: The other line.
- 26:11Speaker 3: He resurrected.
- 26:12Speaker 1: She immediately was like, it's a miracle. He's alive.
- 26:17Speaker 2: So then later, over drinks with HR, I'm telling them
- 26:19Speaker 2: the whole story, and I'm expecting shock and awe. And instead,
- 26:22Speaker 2: they kind of shrugged.
- 26:23Speaker 1: They already knew.
- 26:25Speaker 2: It turns out that Jen had faked her own husband's
- 26:28Speaker 2: unaliving to get extra vacation time, and the only reason
- 26:32Speaker 2: that she got away with it was because she threatened
- 26:34Speaker 2: to expose the company president's affairs if anybody pushed back.
- 26:39Speaker 1: Oh.
- 26:40Speaker 2: So it was an inside job.
- 26:42Speaker 1: Yeah. The drama stacks. Yeah.
- 26:46Speaker 2: So it was just multiple layers of some lies, some drama,
- 26:50Speaker 2: and also it's a big cover-up. So it was a
- 26:53Speaker 2: multi-tier problem.
- 26:54Speaker 1: And Jen was a pro. She was collecting information to
- 26:57Speaker 1: run her scam. Well, I would make her at least
- 27:00Speaker 1: give the money back. People actually raised money for her.
- 27:03Speaker 2: Took up some collections around the office.
- 27:05Speaker 1: Yeah. That's like the backbreaker for me. It's like if
- 27:08Speaker 1: you're an organization and you're like.
- 27:10Speaker 2: I gave Frank 20 bucks.
- 27:11Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah.
- 27:13Speaker 3: Just crazy.
- 27:14Speaker 2: I just don't understand how.
- 27:15Speaker 1: Do you have a bereavement policy yet? That's a really
- 27:18Speaker 1: interesting thing.
- 27:20Speaker 3: No.
- 27:20Speaker 1: I've had a... You know, over the years, I've had
- 27:22Speaker 1: multiple that happen. And we had one of our employees
- 27:29Speaker 1: lose his wife, another a husband, you know. And it's
- 27:34Speaker 1: just bereavement... The bereavement policies that come standard, right? Yeah,
- 27:39Speaker 1: that's exactly right. So it was just nuts when... you know,
- 27:46Speaker 1: you're faced with it and you're like, this bereavement policy, what?
- 27:52Speaker 1: He gets seven days? You know, it's like, you're just like,
- 27:57Speaker 1: if my child died, I would, you better, I'll see
- 28:00Speaker 1: you next year, brother.
- 28:01Speaker 3: Yeah, I'll be a father.
- 28:02Speaker 1: I mean, yeah. And so, I don't know. I just,
- 28:07Speaker 1: I think about that. We really extended ours and just
- 28:12Speaker 1: went full-blown where, you know, and I think we just
- 28:17Speaker 1: kind of crafted it to instead of having the days
- 28:20Speaker 1: we just did, it was just a lot of trust
- 28:23Speaker 1: implemented into the processes. Like we're going to give them
- 28:26Speaker 1: the days they need, right? Not you get 21 days.
- 28:30Speaker 1: And by the way, on the 22nd day, yeah, you
- 28:33Speaker 1: gotta be back.
- 28:34Speaker 3: Yeah. Because I mean, if they come back, they might
- 28:36Speaker 3: be back physically.
- 28:37Speaker 1: But yeah, I mean, yeah, it's just, you know, it's,
- 28:41Speaker 1: it's just, I think it's just one of the responsibilities
- 28:43Speaker 1: as a CEO, as a company, you just take on,
- 28:44Speaker 1: he's like, if I'm going to build a culture in
- 28:46Speaker 1: which everyone loves to work here, right, and we love
- 28:48Speaker 1: each other and we're after this common vision, if someone's
- 28:51Speaker 1: life is changed and altered in such a terrible way, right,
- 28:55Speaker 1: I mean, how do I approach that with some rubber
- 28:59Speaker 1: stamp way of, you know, hey, you know, so sorry
- 29:04Speaker 1: you lost your loved one, your kid, your husband, whatever
- 29:07Speaker 1: it is, we're going to give you five days. And
- 29:10Speaker 1: after that, you know, we're all talking to him to
- 29:12Speaker 1: pay you. HR people probably think I'm crazy, but It's just,
- 29:15Speaker 1: you know, our, our, our mentality after facing that was like, we, we,
- 29:22Speaker 1: there is no one size fits all here. Some people
- 29:23Speaker 1: need to get back to work. Some people are like,
- 29:25Speaker 1: this is how I, you know, this is how I,
- 29:28Speaker 1: this is how I move forward. And others are like,
- 29:30Speaker 1: I just want to lay in bed for, you know,
- 29:33Speaker 1: six months. And, you know, you gotta be okay with either. Yeah.
- 29:37Speaker 3: 100%. Everyone deals with it differently.
- 29:39Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. think it's harder, certainly harder when you become
- 29:42Speaker 1: a massive organization, you know, certainly much, much harder.
- 29:45Speaker 3: So many moving pieces.
- 29:47Speaker 1: But, you know, where we're at in our, in our
- 29:50Speaker 1: journey is, it's just like a really good place. You know,
- 29:53Speaker 1: it's a really good place. It's, as a CEO, it's,
- 29:56Speaker 1: you're able to, it's just, you're able to turn knobs
- 29:59Speaker 1: and affect culture. And I, I love that part. So, yeah.
- 30:03Speaker 1: All right guys.
- 30:04Speaker 4: Um, I wanted to wrap up, but before we did,
- 30:08Speaker 4: I just wanted this, I wanted to remind, um, uh,
- 30:12Speaker 4: remind us that we've got this $ 10, 000, uh, contest.
- 30:15Speaker 1: Yeah. That, that, uh, is absolutely trying to win. Yes. Uh, he's,
- 30:21Speaker 1: he's going to rewrite a story and send us a
- 30:23Speaker 1: picture of Batman, uh, If you win this, we will
- 30:27Speaker 1: like put this Batman dude up and do this whole
- 30:31Speaker 1: video montage. We should do, we should, we should. Okay.
- 30:34Speaker 1: Here's what we have to do. Let's go opportunities for it.
- 30:36Speaker 1: We're going to, let's put together a video of that
- 30:39Speaker 1: story of like this dude constantly wearing a Batman costume
- 30:43Speaker 1: and work. Yeah. We have a Batman around here. Have
- 30:46Speaker 1: you ever seen that? No. We have an employee who
- 30:49Speaker 1: likes to put on the Batman.
- 30:50Speaker 2: Is he Batman?
- 30:50Speaker 1: Yeah, everyone's well. In some of the events we've had,
- 30:52Speaker 1: he's been Batman.
- 30:53Speaker 2: It's pretty funny.
- 30:55Speaker 1: But we've got this contest going on. We've got about
- 30:58Speaker 1: 24 episodes in a season. The best story, if you
- 31:01Speaker 1: submit it, will win $ 10, 000. So you can go on
- 31:04Speaker 1: our website, thebadhire.com, go over to submit, check it out.
- 31:10Speaker 1: Go through a process of submitting, answering a bunch of questions.
- 31:13Speaker 1: Check out some rules there and submit the story. If
- 31:17Speaker 1: it's a good story, it'll end up on the show.
- 31:18Speaker 1: So you get to hear it. And if it's really cool,
- 31:21Speaker 1: you know, producers will potentially reach out to you and say, hey,
- 31:24Speaker 1: do you want to come on the show? Yeah. We'll
- 31:26Speaker 1: either phone you in, you know, or video in or
- 31:31Speaker 1: get you to get here. And if we do that,
- 31:35Speaker 1: then we'll pay for you to get here. And then
