- 2:04That's a website, or on US one nineteen in Chapmanville. Coming up a
- 2:07little bit later on the show, We're gonna have a little fun today,
- 2:09a little fun that may anger a few people, but you know that's part
- 2:13of part of the fun of doing a talk show. Like we talk a
- 2:16lot on the show, and you have many times have you heard these kids
- 2:19today? Well, I'm probably one of them that says things like that from
- 2:22time to time. But we're gonna have an author by the name of Kate
- 2:25Foster on the show. Now. Kate is nationally known and she is a
- 2:30member of Generation Z, and she's written an article about why it is that
- 2:35some I always say, some not all Generation Z folks just don't have a
- 2:39work ethic. Again, some not all, But she's a member of that
- 2:44generation, so I guess she can talk about it. We'll get to Kate
- 2:46coming up a little bit later on with your calls and text too. I
- 2:49want to get a little bit more into Bob Huggin situation, because every time
- 2:53that I cracked the microphone at nine oh seven Monday through Friday, there's always
- 2:58something new that comes up into one person who's been keeping miss sevill have,
- 3:01but one who's been doing a great job of keeping our eye. Los Gym
- 3:05Workman from Wiley and Wimpey's Sports Digest, the premier sports publication in West Virginia.
- 3:10Jim stops my the Palmar Store studio. Now, Jim, good morning,
- 3:13how are you? Good morning, Dave. Appreciate the opportunity to be
- 3:15here. Thank you for being here. You know I had you on a
- 3:19few weeks ago, Jim, when the hugging story first broke, and so
- 3:23much it's happened since. In you and were talking to the green room.
- 3:25It seems like that was a lifetime ago. We were kids. You had
- 3:28hair of that's how long. That's a long it's bed. We had the
- 3:31dui arrest, then the resignation that may or may or may not have been
- 3:36a resignation. Now we learn that the dui, if Huggins places card rights
- 3:42could be stricken from the record. Now again, I do want to say
- 3:45that for the record, that's not uncommon in Pennsylvania. I saw some comments
- 3:47on social media talking about his status. That is that's common. They followed
- 3:53what they do in Pennsylvania. You got a problem with the end, a
- 3:55problem with the law as opposed to a hugging situation. But now comes word
- 4:00Jim, late yesterday the Bob fitz Simmons, who had been a close confidant
- 4:04to Bob Hugginess, is no longer with the former coach at Simmons sending a
- 4:09letter late yesterday to w V General counsel Stephanie Taylor saying as much. Now
- 4:15it looks like that we get to David Campbell out of Cleveland, that is
- 4:20in now. Jeff Jenkins on the website has got a great story. It's
- 4:24the lead story at WV metro news dot com with a complete timeline of all
- 4:28this. But what a mask, Jim. So much to unpack here.
- 4:31So I was last on June twentieth, Okay, on West Virginia Day.
- 4:36On West Virginia Day, we were talking about this. It was four days
- 4:40before w VU introduced the new interim coach, Josh Eilert. I was up
- 4:45there for that. But just so much to unpack. And Dave, you
- 4:47know how I love your opening all the movie clips. But the theme for
- 4:53this thing is what we have here is failure to communicate and That's exactly what's
- 5:00going on here, because as we talked about on June twentieth, you know,
- 5:02the emphasis should have been on you know, Bob Huggins has some issues
- 5:08that we need to make sure that he gets on the right path. You
- 5:12said that on that date, on that date, So had they maintained that
- 5:16communication, that line of communication, we wouldn't be sitting here talking about what
- 5:21we're talking about. That's just happened in the last couple of weeks because that's
- 5:27what Huggins and his counsel was saying. There's been a failure to communicate.
- 5:30He said, he's saying that he didn't authorize the statement that w sent out
- 5:36on his behalf. That's a problem, it is, and there's just so
- 5:41much again as you said, to unpack her. And let me say,
- 5:43with all due respect to a texture for the show yesterday, and I love
- 5:46all my callers, textures and listeners. By the way, the texture seemed
- 5:48to take issue with my coverage of the Huggins situation asked me not to make
- 5:51fun of it. I was not making fun of Coach Huggins personally. What
- 5:55I was saying when I was referring to as the Huggins turns. As I
- 5:59called with the Jeff yesterday, I was talking about the whole saga, you
- 6:02know, not the man, just want to kind of put that out there.
- 6:05And I have said, like you that since day one, Jim,
- 6:09I wish nothing but the best for coach Huggins moving forward, and have hoped
- 6:14that there would be some sort of a path when he's well to get him
- 6:18back in the good graces of the university and get him back on campus,
- 6:21maybe in some sort of an auxiliary roles or an ambassador of some sort for
- 6:26the pro game. You and I talked about another day, Jim, I
- 6:28don't see that happening at all at this point. And that was the question
- 6:30that I gave to the athletic director Rin Baker on the twenty fourth when I
- 6:35was in Morgantown for that event. I asked him, you know, is
- 6:39there a plan that you bring Bob Huggins back on a game day and maybe
- 6:44send him on a better note, give the fans a chance to give him
- 6:46a standing ovation and thank him for all the years in his career. And
- 6:50he said, yes, there is a plan for that. We're putting it
- 6:54together. So right now, after the twenty fourth to right now. I
- 6:58don't know how that's gonna happen. Yeah, and again we're talking with Jim
- 7:01working with from Wally Whippy Sports Digest. You're not a lawyer, neither of
- 7:05my Jim and I have heard great legal minds of like Harvey Peyton was on
- 7:10with Dave Wilson on talking on a Monday that I saw a clip on the
- 7:13TV news of Rusty Webb the other night talking about this. They seem to
- 7:17think that he ain't coming back at all in any roles. I don't see
- 7:23how it can happening. You know. I do know Bob Fitzsimmons, and
- 7:26I've worked with him on a couple of occasions, and I'm gonna work with
- 7:29him in the next couple of months on something very important. And what I
- 7:32know about Bob is he's a great guy. He's a solid guy. For
- 7:36him to step away from this, that's a statement in itself. And indeed,
- 7:42and it just seems like to use the old adage Jim, that it's
- 7:46like the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing. I mean,
- 7:47if you think about that, and this whole thing on all sides was
- 7:51just bungled I mean so greatly. It seems like, I mean, if
- 7:57you think about it, because you know, Huggins and his people come out
- 8:01with the statement, you know, I guess the daughter who I don't know
- 8:03what all you probably do, but the daughter comes out and says, well,
- 8:07Dad recycled cans and you know, and I mean, yeah, okay,
- 8:13and again you know, with him not knowing what city he was in,
- 8:18and I mean, there was a dangerous situation that onto busy Pittsburgh Street
- 8:22the night of a Taylor Swift concert could have gotten a whole lot worse,
- 8:26you know, than than than what it did. It's just a sad,
- 8:31sad and in the meantime, Um Josh Eilert, who's the new interim head
- 8:37coach, has got to try to put together some semblance of a team to
- 8:43play in the upcoming season. And then you factory in the transfer portal and
- 8:46everything. Yep, it's it is a mess. What I would like to
- 8:50hear, which would clear up a lot of confusion, is I'd like to
- 8:54hear from some of those WVU basketball players that were in the meeting that Huggins
- 8:58had. What did he tell them? Did he say listen, I'm gone,
- 9:03I love you, guys. I'm gonna recommend Josh Eilert or whomever and
- 9:09just hang in there. I'm gonna be around if you ever need me,
- 9:11give me a call. Yeah. Or did he say, listen, I'm
- 9:15gonna go into treatment, I'll be back. What did he say? We
- 9:20need to We need to hear from the Joe to Sens and guys like that
- 9:24that have left who are gone now, Yeah, because you know they they
- 9:26wouldn't have any dog in the fight right now. So um, I'd like
- 9:31to hear from them. What what actually was said in that team meeting right
- 9:37before Huggins went to treatment and what happened when When when when coach goes into
- 9:43his office and cleans out his office and loaded off. I mean it was
- 9:46documentary. He went in, he had some meetings, said he got a
- 9:48couple of boxes and and and was out the door. I mean, what
- 9:52was going through If he's not my my, if he's not resigning, then
- 9:56why I mean, if that were me, and I'm not Bob Huggins money
- 10:01stretch of the imagination, but if that were something, if I were suing
- 10:03w VRC Media and they're kicking me out of my little cubbyhole I have upstairs.
- 10:07I probably would say, well, you may as well leave all my
- 10:09cowboys and Marshall stuff here, because I'm I'll be back in a week.
- 10:13Here, two weeks, give your Schwartzenegger impression. I'll be back. I'll
- 10:18be back. It is interesting, Jim, because I've talked about the fact
- 10:22that I'm gonna be in Morgantown Thursday and Friday as part of this Joe's Nose
- 10:24Kids WV Legends golf event benefiting the Hoss Foundation and Children's Hospital, and there's
- 10:30gonna be a whole lot of mountaineer legends. They're mainly football players, but
- 10:35some other athletes as well. I mean, you know, and coach Neelan
- 10:37himself was going to be a part of this as well. Just so many
- 10:39I Joe's react on the show earlier this week talking about the name name dropping
- 10:43who always going to be there to be a I mean, I'm gonna be
- 10:46there, and I'm gonna have my reporter had on for you, you know,
- 10:50and and for our news team to say, well, here's what's so
- 10:52and so said about Here's what I mean. You know, They've all got
- 10:56opinions as well. Yeah, it's interesting too, an invent an event that's
- 11:00coming up in a couple of months September thirtieth. I've been invited to come
- 11:05down to the Arti Museum that Tex Williams does this West Virginia Sports Legends annual
- 11:11thing that he does, and he's invited me down, and Bob Huggins is
- 11:15supposed to be there and he has reiterated. Tex Williams says that that he
- 11:20will be there. So we'll see. With all due respect to coach Williams,
- 11:26um, I mean, maybe I'm wrong, Jim. I don't see
- 11:31that happening. And I'm not saying that Tex Williams is not is being untruthful.
- 11:35I think he thinks he'll be there, but I just don't see it.
- 11:37Here's hope I'm wrong. Here here's the reason why I believe it will.
- 11:41The tax has so much respect from people. And I mean Jerry West
- 11:46would fly from California to go to Artie, West Virginia to h and he
- 11:52didn't fly into Artie International Airport. He gets there, no but to not
- 11:56disappoint texts and to support texts. So I I kind of see it happening.
- 12:01I think that this may be the first public appearance, although I'm sure
- 12:05it's not gonna be open to the public, right, there'll be a lot
- 12:09of people there always And this story, now, I mean, did you
- 12:13see the piece in USA Today. There was a big piece on USA Today.
- 12:16I mean this is not I mean again, you're talking about coach Huggins,
- 12:18who is you know, going into this upcoming season, he would have
- 12:22been the winningest active coach in the entire NC double A. I mean,
- 12:28this is not just a West Virginia story. I mean USA Today did a
- 12:31piece on it, just talking about the embarrassment of the whole. And again,
- 12:37you can talk about Jim and we'll close it with this. You can
- 12:39talk about the embarrassment of the situation without necessarily shaming the individual, you know,
- 12:45and it is this is an embarrassment on West Virginia University, an institution
- 12:50that quite frankly right now I needs some good news. If you've heard Brad
- 12:52mcalhanney on the show yesterday, I mean, eighty percent of the programs are
- 12:56now into review. There's financial issues at w You the football team, I
- 13:01mean they were picked fourteenth and the Big twelve. I mean, that's that's
- 13:07a that's a math thing. There, Jim. It's not a good day
- 13:09to be a mountaineer right now. It's not a good summer to be a
- 13:11mountaineer right now. And you know another point that I want to make about
- 13:16Huggins. You know, he has, it seemed, put himself above the
- 13:20team, above the program in pushing this like that. It's this is not
- 13:24good for the program. That is a absolute contradiction to what he would have
- 13:30put up with with any player. In fact, that probably cost him a
- 13:33few recruits if you think about it. Oh yeah, because you had to
- 13:37fit into his system. You had to do it his way. It couldn't
- 13:41be about one guy. He's not playing by the same set of rules.
- 13:45And you know some of his former players would probably if you pulled them and
- 13:48say what should be the punishment for Bob Huggins one word, they would say
- 13:54treadmill. He was notorious for putting those guys on the treadmills. So yeah,
- 14:00he's he's not playing by the same kind of rules, all right,
- 14:03Jim. It's always pleasure to have you on the shell. Wally Whippies.
- 14:07Of course, the premier sports publication of the State covery not only WVU,
- 14:09but Marshall and all the other schools, high schools and the pros. A
- 14:13little breather for you now before the season gets going. I guess right,

- 18:08And I'll admit, if you listen to show, I'm as guilty as anyone.
- 18:11And I can tell you that when I was a young fellow, I
- 18:14hated when someone tried to define what my generation was. In fact, I
- 18:19don't like people try to define my beloved Generation X group because we're not all
- 18:23the same, you know, any more than millennials, baby boomers or Gen
- 18:27Z or the same. So in order to talk about Gen Z, I
- 18:30figured you needed to have someone who is not only part of that generation,
- 18:33but someone who studied the generation at link. How was that? For a
- 18:37long sign up? Kate Foster's person Kate is an author and a student at
- 18:41Washington University in Saint Louis, and she's done work for the Virginia General Assembly
- 18:45and as a healthcare policy fellow for the Sister Row Institute. She's currently an
- 18:48intern with the American Enterprise Institute, and she joins us. Now, Kate,
- 18:53good morning, how are you. I'm doing great, It's great to
- 18:57be here. Thank you for taking time to be on the show today.
- 19:00And sorry, but after my long intro, we don't have time for your
- 19:03interview. I'm kiddy. I appreciate you. I appreciate you join us.
- 19:07Okay, So, first of all, anyone who thinks like me, and
- 19:11if you're one of those people to say these kids today, if you're one
- 19:15of those kind of people as I can be, as we all can be
- 19:17from from time to time, you're a perfect example of what is gen z.
- 19:22If you don't mind my asking exactly, what is your age? I'm
- 19:26twenty one, all right, twenty one, and gen z is those that
- 19:29are born I think ninety six and up, am I right about that about
- 19:33nineteen ninety seven, the earliest about twenty twelve. So we're I'm about roughly
- 19:40in the front middle of that. Okay, okay. Um, So,
- 19:45so you wrote a piece, uh and it's called my generation Avoids work.
- 19:49Here's how that is impacting impacting mental health. Now. It appeared in,
- 19:53among other places, the American Spectator. I read it Monday, and I'll
- 19:57tell you, kay, it's a great peace and I would urge our listeners
- 20:02to check it out. But you start, You're welcome. You start in
- 20:04the article by talking about how workforce participation rates have declined, particularly among young
- 20:11people. And I do want to say before anyone blames COVID, which certainly
- 20:17didn't help, don't get me wrong, but workforce participation had been declining again,
- 20:21particularly among young people, since the year two thousand. So that's a
- 20:26long time that it's been going down, particularly young young people. What's the
- 20:30story here? Why? Yeah, And so you're right to mention COVID,
- 20:33because this is really something that COVID got all of us talking about. I
- 20:37mean, if you look at the graphs that I'm sighting there in a lot
- 20:41of economic data, it's a huge spike downwards in COVID, and then a
- 20:45couple of years coming back out of COVID, we're coming about to pre pandemic
- 20:48levels. But it looks different now. I mean, gen Z was born
- 20:52as early as nineteen ninety seven. I was born in two thousand and one,
- 20:56which I know is the big after two thousand stadies feel pretty young for
- 21:00you guys. But many people at my current job right now have never worked
- 21:06in an in person workplace before. They've only had virtual worker, they haven't
- 21:10been in the workforce before. And so we're all entering this workplace in a
- 21:14odd post pandemic time and a lot of us didn't have jobs during COVID or
- 21:18we had some really odd or like make it yourself jobs, Like I was
- 21:21an eBay seller for a year and totally loved it. But it's not the
- 21:23traditional workplace environment. And so right now, gen Z's really grappling with what
- 21:29their life post pandemic is going to look like work wise, and a lot
- 21:32of people have a bit of an aversion to entering a real full time workplace
- 21:36again. And there's different cultural narratives about how much we're going to value work
- 21:41and what we're going to look like as a generation in the workplace now that
- 21:44we're really entering it. And that's really interesting to me in my writing well,
- 21:48and one of the things that I found interesting is and gen Z has
- 21:53made it clear, as you pointed out to the piece, that many members
- 21:57of gen Z your generation and see the working culture as a threat to mental
- 22:04health. But you know, Kate, it's been proven time and time began
- 22:08to get it. You so greatly point that in your pace that one of
- 22:12the best things we can do for mental health is to have steady employment.
- 22:17Am I right here? Yeah, it's a really interesting thing that we're really
- 22:22learning in the wake of the pandemic, after work was just stripped out of
- 22:26so many people's lives. But I think gen Z is balancing two kind of
- 22:30important points here. I think gen Z's really right to look at generations before
- 22:34us and see that you know, I'm working in DC right now, and
- 22:37there's some really like intense corporate work cultures that say you need to put work
- 22:42before family, before friends, before that sort of indispensable human need for rest.
- 22:48And I think gen Z is right in a sense to come of age
- 22:51and think that, you know, I want a balance in my life.
- 22:53I don't work to define me and to define my relationships, and I think
- 22:57that balance is really important. But on the other side, an over aversion
- 23:02to work, and a narrative that oh, all work is bad for mental
- 23:04health. Work as a slog you have to get through from nine to five.
- 23:08I think we're overlooking the benefits that work gives us in our lives that
- 23:11we really really realized coming out of the pandemic, and that work as a
- 23:15lot of major social, psychological and character benefits that enhance our life, and
- 23:21it's baked into sort of our psychology as humans. I mean, evolutionary psychology
- 23:26dictated that humans who did the best, who had the inclination to get up
- 23:32and do things, to grow crops, to hind to meet people form advantageous
- 23:36social relationships, are the ones who survived and thrived, And it's built into
- 23:40us as people to seek out daily occupation, to fill our days with work,
- 23:44and we have a lot of great psychological benefits to doing that. The
- 23:48completion of tasks makes us feel good, It gives us a sense of purpose
- 23:52and a reason to get up in the morning. It improves our mental health.
- 23:56And conversely, unemployment has been shown to have really dangerous mental health consequences.
- 24:00And so I think I guess my main point of the article, and
- 24:04from what I've been studying, is that gen Z should kick up and get
- 24:07a job and should really take advantage of these benefits that come out of work,
- 24:11and also realize the ability to which work can enhance your mental states.
- 24:15And so if you're in a job right now that really is not well suited
- 24:18to you, to God and look around and find something that really gives you
- 24:22those benefits to the max. And there are I mean, I don't know
- 24:25about where you are, but I can tell you that here in West Virginia,
- 24:26there are jobs everywhere. And if you don't, if you don't necessarily
- 24:30like what it is you're doing now, you can always change. Again,
- 24:33we're talking with Kate Foster. Now, you're a gen Zer yourself, as
- 24:36you said, born in two thousand. That's hard for me to believe that
- 24:38anybody was born in two thousand. But okay, but but trust me,
- 24:44you'll get to my one point. You'll say, I can't believe anybody was
- 24:47born in twenty twenty three. But but you're a gen Zer yourself. When
- 24:51do you witness among you but your counterparts, your peers, your your friends.
- 24:55What do you see out there? I think again, I'm seeing a
- 24:59little bit of both. I'm seeing like right now, I'm working in DC,
- 25:03and so a lot of gen Z around me are growing up in this
- 25:07you know, work, work, work. I want to get here,
- 25:08I want to be the best. It's very it's very much corporate climbing,
- 25:11and it works really well for some people. But I know for me personally,
- 25:15that scares me a little bit, and I want to have a well
- 25:18rounded, positive life. I think most other gen Z around me are on
- 25:22that same mindset. But I think a lot of gen Z is really struggling
- 25:26to get themselves out there and settle themselves into the workplace. And I think
- 25:30a lot of it comes out of this sort of mental health epidemic that we're
- 25:33in right now. It's just another big part of the article here, and
- 25:36that GenZ has been called the most depressed generation. I as a gen Z,
- 25:40I see mental health and mental health worries all around me all the time.
- 25:44I mean, gen Z or twice is likely to report depressions, feelings
- 25:48of anxiety, or secrets mental illness. And LINZ is also a very screen
- 25:52dominated generation. I can't really remember a time without screens around me. I
- 25:56can maybe remember the black dairies, but that's the baddest far as I can
- 26:00go back, which always gets older. Kind of hearts laughing, But it
- 26:04really is a generation that's more anxious. We're more dominated by screens in the
- 26:08Internet, and we're less likely to go out and work, and I think
- 26:11that's giving us a greater aversion to entering the real world than other generations before
- 26:17us. I think every generation looks down at the one after it and says,
- 26:19all to have it easy, and they're not working hard enough. I
- 26:22think that's the same across things. But then he does have a unique set
- 26:26of placement disadvantages whatever you call it. Well, and that's a very good
- 26:30point because you know, again, I'm classic Gen X one in nineteen seventy,
- 26:33so so you know, the boomers that raised me, you know,
- 26:37said all you kids have it easy, and then and then I you know,
- 26:41I like, you know, we all look down on each other.
- 26:42And that's that. And they'll get me doing that one hundred of years from
- 26:45now, if you don't mind me asking, Kate, what was your background
- 26:48like growing up? What did you witness from your family growing up that kind
- 26:52of set your mindset? Well, I have a boom or dad who I
- 26:56love so so much. He's my biggest fan. Who will very happily go
- 27:00into boomer tangent any day of the week. But I'm from Virginia. A
- 27:04lot of my families from Mechanic Kill of Virginia, and so I've seen a
- 27:08lot of like really hard, honest work around me. And so I think
- 27:12I've I've grown up being taught that this is a real social value, and
- 27:15that this builds purpose and it builds character and it's good for you who as
- 27:21a well rounded person. And I think I'm a product of that in a
- 27:23sense. And so coming to BC was a bit of a crazy culture shock
- 27:27and a big difference. But I think those values are being lost a little
- 27:33bit on younger generations, and those values aren't as transferred onto the online community
- 27:37and on social media. But I think it would merit us to have a
- 27:41little bit of those values back. I mean, I don't think all gen
- 27:42z should go out and get a blue collar job in Channic Still Virginia,
- 27:47but I think a robust sense of a culture of work and a culture of
- 27:52occupation, and whatever form it may be, it may be taken care of
- 27:55an older person, or maybe volunteering or maybe teaching, It can be any
- 28:00those many, many jobs you mentioned that are available in West Virginia, for
- 28:03example, But a culture that sees it as a social good and a social
- 28:07value and something that needs to be a better person. I think we've lost
- 28:10a bit about and I personally think it could do as well. When you
- 28:14close by saying basically and I'm I don't want to try to put words in
- 28:18your mouth that if i'm if I say something wrong, you can certainly correct
- 28:21me. But do you feel that if young people care about their mental health
- 28:23and the mental health of their friends and others, that they should get off
- 28:27their butts and go to work. Yeah, I think that's probably the more
- 28:33harsher direct way of saying it, But I think that's I think that's really
- 28:37that's the way that we can support others and love others around that. We
- 28:41are in truly a mental health epidemic. I see it so much around you,
- 28:45with younger people, and the problem is that our mental health systems can't
- 28:48keep up. Right now, there are months long wait lists to get care
- 28:52for mental health. There are sort of different providers that provide different things that
- 28:56may work for you that may not. And it feels like, at least
- 29:00from my vantage point, down here, it's overwhelming and a lot of people
- 29:03don't know where to go or how to help themselves. And a big product
- 29:07of social media certainly is why this is the way it is. But the
- 29:11fact of the matter is that we have a major mental health demand and what
- 29:15we need is practical, on the ground solutions to help improve generational mental health.
- 29:19And that's really what my research has centered around. And I found an
- 29:22unexpected benefit in work and steady employment. And I think that a culture that
- 29:27encourages people to get out there and find something to do with their day and
- 29:30to get all these really great social, psychological and character benefits, that whole
- 29:36package that can really help this mental health crisis. And so I think it's
- 29:40coming out of that place of love and support and wanting to do something that
- 29:44which is me towards work, fascinating peace. And you know, when I
- 29:48read it, like I said Monday night, I wanted to try to get
- 29:51you booked on the show because I found the piece to be fastering. I
- 29:52appreciate you taking time out of your busy schedule there in DC to join us.
- 29:56Kate Foster, We'll talk again soon and and thanks a lot for everything
- 30:00I appreciate you being here. Thank you so much. This is so much
- 30:03fun, all right, thanks twenty three minutes away from ten to five eighty

- 30:15visit generations PT dot com. Let me just say this before we go to
- 30:18break, and I guess we text to get too and some other things in
- 30:19the news as well. And for anyone who listens to this show and believe
- 30:23it or not, I get this a lot more than what you may think.
- 30:26In fact, I get the Dave's too liberal. Yeah, believe it
- 30:32or not, I actually get that a lot, and listen to this.
- 30:34I also get at Dave's too conservative. So somebody said one time, well,
- 30:40if the liberals think you're too conservative and the conservatives think you're too liberal,
- 30:42you must be doing something right. I don't know, but I will
- 30:45say this, and this is gonna push me toward more towards my conservative mindset
- 30:52here. I feel that in a lot of ways we become a nation of
- 30:57whiners. And I know that's about the most boomer thing. Kate referred to
- 31:03her boomer dad. I think that's the most boomer thing you can say from
- 31:07a non baby boomer, as I am. But it's my feeling. And
- 31:11of course, as I said at the top of the segment, you can't
- 31:14paint everyone with one brush and say I mean there were whiney, lazy baby
- 31:17boomers too. But I think the difference is is back then, we didn't
- 31:22celebrate it. You know, I don't. I don't recall my dad or
- 31:26my granddad ever having a mental health day or complaining about their anxiety. In
- 31:33the words of my good friend pastor Marylin Collins here in Charleston, miss me
- 31:38with that. It sounds much cooler when Marylin Collins says it. And as
- 31:44was pointed out by Kate and the piece and has been pointed out by plenty
- 31:47of mental health professionals, the best thing you can use go to work and
- 31:52get a job, a jailb But who's to blame for the attitudes that we're
- 31:59talking about? My generation? We're who raised these kids, the ones that
- 32:07have issued I'm not again, I'm not damning all of them, Okay,
- 32:09I'm saying we're the ones to blame because we raised My wife and I chose
- 32:14not to have kids. We're what's known as child free by choice. But
- 32:17had we had a kid at the time when most people do, our kid
- 32:21would have been somewhere in their mid to late twenties right now. And it
- 32:24was my generation that created these issues with a lot of the gen zs that
- 32:29we're talking about right now. And I really can't, for the life of
- 32:34me figure out why, because I don't recall things being that bad in the
- 32:39nineteen seventies, or our parents or upbringing me in so bad that we should
- 32:44radically change the way that we were raised to do things. You know,
- 32:47all I ever witnessed personally was my parents and my wife's parents, our respective
- 32:55parents going to work. You know. My wife started her work career at
- 33:00age eight by cleaning offices with her mother. I started working, making decent
- 33:05money, just doing stuff around my neighborhood at about twelve. I paid cash
- 33:10for my first car at age sixteen. I moved out at seventeen. I
- 33:15didn't take out student loans because and my wife did an'ything. Because we worked
- 33:20our way through college. Many of our friends did too. And I'm not
- 33:22saying that bragging or saying, oh look at me. That's not my point.
- 33:24I'm just saying that the two kids from a coal camp can do it,
- 33:30that you grew up in South Hills, you can probably do it too,
- 33:34So just throwing that out there. And and for parents again, a
- 33:39lot of the attitudes come from the parents. Stop coddling your kids, you
- 33:43know, take away the adderall replace it with dispatula or shovel. All right.

- 36:37is generations Z? And why are we even now arbitrarily naming generations? I'm
- 36:43the son of the greatest generation World War two, and since boomers follow that,
- 36:47even born in nineteen sixty eight, I consider myself a boomer. I
- 36:51have those traits from rising and who started Generation X, Y and now Z
- 36:57tenth generation from most of my Mayflower ancestors. So that is X as a
- 37:00Roman numeral ten. Why even name them? Uh? That came from I
- 37:07guess well, I mean the baby boomers have always been around because obviously you
- 37:09know what the name means. Then the people came back for World War two
- 37:13and they started having babies. Okay, the Generation X actually came from a
- 37:17book, and if I get them, I think it was Douglas Copeland that
- 37:22wrote the book. And it was right around the time that I was coming
- 37:24of age in college when the book Generation X came out. And that's just
- 37:28that's just what we do. I mean, people just name, you know,
- 37:30the generations. And again it's so easy to say, Okay, this
- 37:36is what generation X is, this is what baby boom, and there are
- 37:39variables to all. I mean, you know, Kate and her piece talked
- 37:42about working in DC in that culture where there is there are i should say
- 37:47a lot of people of her age that do value work, and there I'm
- 37:52sure there were people in Baby boomers that did not. You know, so
- 37:57get in trouble when you try to paint people. And I'm a fuilty as
- 38:00anybody else, Um Texas, Dave, Please don't take this the wrong way.
- 38:07But a question I have is with this younger generation being labeled is the
- 38:09most oppressed. Could that have anything to do with many of them being coddled
- 38:14constantly, never being told no, and being part of the everybody gets a
- 38:17trophy crowd while growing up and then and then basically thrown out into the world
- 38:23under this thing called adulthood and not knowing how to handle it all these new
- 38:28responsibilities they were not prepared for. Again, somebody had to raise these kids,
- 38:32Okay, somebody had to put them out there. So that kind of
- 38:36goes along. I think with what I'm saying. TEXTA says we have the
- 38:39lowest unemployment ever. Gen Z culture is working. They're just not doing the
- 38:44jobs the rich want them. To do. They're self employed, door dash
- 38:46grubhub five hundred dollars a day and not bad money. Can't make that at
- 38:51a restaurant, you know, if you're working, more power to you,
- 38:54don't. I mean, I just hope that you're just sound like John Bradette
- 38:58to retire at radio here for a moment, but I hope that you are.
- 39:02I hope that they're saving and planning when they can't grubub anymore or when
- 39:08something else comes to replaces grubbub. You know, um, let's see parents
- 39:15everywhere listen to these this is a texture. Listen to the wisdom on parenting
- 39:19from the childless dude. Everyone knows that non parents have the best parent and
- 39:22device what when we parents love it when they tell us what we're doing wrong?
- 39:29Guilty as charge. I don't. But but as a non parent,
- 39:32I also get a lot of crap for not having kids too, So you
- 39:36know, I appreciate the text Uh, Dave, the whining to talk about
- 39:43has a name now. It's BMW No, not the car, It's Belliate
- 39:47moan wine, and it's an epidemic proportions, says a texture. Uh textures
- 39:54is Dave. I'm a gen extra also, and what I can say in
- 39:58regards to the vast different says in our generational millennials or gen Z is,
- 40:02in fact, there are a lot more restrictions were put on us as adults
- 40:07than there were on our parents raising us, such as if you spanked your
- 40:10child and our generation you could go to jail, especially if you did it
- 40:14in public. I think that meant not but but now, yeah, I
- 40:17mean there's a lot of differences, you know, a whole lot of a
- 40:21whole lot of differences. And again I just said, I just don't understand
- 40:25what growing up in the nineteen seventy while it was so bad that we had
- 40:29that my generation had to go drastically change the way they raise kids. Yes,
- 40:37yes, as a texture, you and the and the lady are absolutely
- 40:42correct. Okay, a couple of notes here. Hobby Kirchivill continues his vacation

- 46:07traffic note for today, It's going to be slow going westbound. Probably already
- 46:10started on the Fort Hill Bridge if you're trying to exit the city to get
- 46:15on I sixty four. Some emergency repairs are happening. They were set scheduled
- 46:22to start around nine this morning, and I'm presuming that that is happening and
- 46:25that should last one about four or so this afternoon. Again, it's westbound
- 46:30impacting the ramp getting on sixty four at the Ford Hill Bridge, So use
- 46:34caution, be prepared and be prepared to set for a while, because you're
- 46:37gonna set for a while to day. Again, it's supposed to between nine
- 46:39and four. It's kind of an emergency type situation from one I understand,
- 46:43so just be prepared for that. Texas gen Z has realized that your employer
- 46:50doesn't care about you, your health and that you're easily replaceable. So why
- 46:53break your body and mind for someone or a business that won't reciprocate and the
- 46:59wages of these jobs, mobs that barely pay enough for the cost of living
- 47:01isn't reciprocating. According to a Texter, again blanket statement. I appreciate the
- 47:07texture, but it's kind of a blanket saving to say your employer doesn't care
- 47:10about you. There are many employers that do not care about their employees,
- 47:15but there are many also that do, so they can both be correct.
- 47:20I guess speaking of traffic as it was a couple of moments ago sort of
- 47:24people coming into West Virginia, Cat Skelton has a story posted on the website
- 47:30that you may want to check out, and I was reading earlier this morning,
- 47:35and it is about how the economic leaders, many of them, including
- 47:42the folks that Advantage Valley, are making plans for the people that are moving
- 47:45in and that plan to move in to the area. And I'm talking about
- 47:51specifically about the Canal Valley and surrounding areas right now. Yes, it is
- 47:54a real thing, folks, People people actually wanting to be here. What
- 48:00a novel concept. Advantage Valley is launching this regional housing needs assessments for up
- 48:09to ten counties here in the region, and some of those are in our
- 48:13listening area. Can all of course Putnham Cabal Mason Jackson, just to name
- 48:15a few, and as I said, there are a few others that are
- 48:20that are in there as well. You know, you got new Corps,
- 48:23Berkshire, Hathaway, the GreenPower Motors. All these companies are bringing people here.
- 48:30And housing is that a premium? In Putnham County where I live,
- 48:36there are townhouses and housing developments going up almost as quickly as they did in
- 48:43the time that Tay's Valley exploded in the nineteen nineties. I was listening to
- 48:46asked the experts with my buddy Larry Dawson. He and Coope did that prior
- 48:51to this show, and he was talking a little bit about that, about
- 48:53the about the growth of the Putnham County area and and now other areas as
- 49:00well. And housing is at a premium over their houses are going for unbelievable
- 49:07amounts of money. There is a house and I wan't mentioned where it is.
- 49:12There's a house that I am familiar with. Not mine, by the
- 49:15way, but there's a house that I'm familiar with that is on the market,
- 49:20just went on the market, and it is going for a ridiculous amount
- 49:23of money. Should never be they should never be asking what they're asking for
- 49:28that house, they're gonna get it. They're gonna get it, So more
- 49:31power and more power to them forgetting that. But anyway, there is a
- 49:37link to this online survey that was commissioned by Advantage Valley in their group,
- 49:42and it's posted as part of Cat Skelden story at wv metronews dot com.
- 49:45And I for one love seeing this kind of news and and go ahead and
- 49:52que the people saying thank you President Biden and the Infrastructure Act for causing all
- 49:58this, and and and there is a certain bit of truth to that.
- 50:00There really is. Although some of these companies, New Core among them,
- 50:07were headed this way anyway, But I digress. As I said, I
- 50:14for one, I am happy to see it because we desperately need people in
- 50:17West Virginia. And if we're at the point where we are bringing in so
- 50:22many people that housing is an issue, that's a good thing. You know.
- 50:30West Virginia is the oldest state in the nation, so the older people
- 50:36are like me, Many of you after today's show are saying it can't happen
- 50:38soon. Enough are dying off, so we gotta do something to bring people
- 50:46here. And we can't just rely on young people to just stay here.
- 50:52I mean we can't. I mean that we want them to stay, but
- 50:54we can't rely on that. We got to bring people here. That and
- 51:00these jobs and this sort of thing is all part of that. And again
- 51:02to the point that the folks had advantaged value who I'm going to effort to
- 51:05have on the show here real soon. These people have got a big task
- 51:09in front of them to try to figure out where to put these people that
- 51:13are moving here. So I say, let's bring it on. And of
- 51:19course with that comes to people saying we don't want people that are different from
- 51:22us coming here, and then you start getting too political ideology and we don't
- 51:27want California liberal bla blah blah blah. Folks. We ain't in a position
- 51:30to be arguing over things like that at this point. Let's just get them
- 51:34here, all right. A couple of quick texts for me, and let's
- 51:37don't forget this as a text of the record. Unemployment rate is not indicative
- 51:39of how many people aren't working, more so how many people are actually looking.
- 51:44Too many today are not looking just living off us taxpayers. Texter says,
- 51:47oh boo hoo, your employer doesn't care about you do these Winders think
- 51:51all of us before them have never dealt with any of this. Grow up
- 51:55as a text. All right, I gotta go coming up on the show
- 51:58to Marson and President Players gonna be stopping by eating. Douglas from The Dirty
- 52:01Birds will be here as well on the show to Marin. Brian Dayton from
- 52:05the West Virginia Chamber of Commerce will be here as well. Follow the news
