- 1:41Speaker 3: That explains your very fetching photo i'm like that's normally
- 1:45Speaker 3: not his look i i don't know what's going.
- 1:47Speaker 1: On here but i don't know i'm changing it up
- 1:49Speaker 1: changing it up new look new me it's all good
- 1:51Speaker 1: it's all good well they say after you've been married
- 1:54Speaker 1: for a long time you start looking like each other
- 1:56Speaker 1: you know I.
- 1:57Speaker 2: See couples that that's true with you guys. I don't
- 1:59Speaker 2: think so, but I'm not around you every day.
- 2:01Speaker 1: So I don't know.
- 2:02Speaker 2: We'll have to check back in.
- 2:04Speaker 1: We have had a, made a suicide pack. If we
- 2:07Speaker 1: end up waking up one day and we look down
- 2:09Speaker 1: and we're wearing matching red, white, and blue jogging suits.
- 2:14Speaker 2: Oh, but that's going to be so cool. What are
- 2:16Speaker 2: you thinking?
- 2:17Speaker 1: We have, we have a, hiking poles and we're going
- 2:22Speaker 1: around the neighborhood.
- 2:23Speaker 2: Oh man, I'm looking forward to this. Let me know
- 2:26Speaker 2: when this kicks in. I want a live feed on
- 2:28Speaker 2: your activities these two.
- 2:30Speaker 3: Right.
- 2:30Speaker 1: And since we're wearing jogging suits, they'll think we're a
- 2:32Speaker 1: part of a cult.
- 2:33Speaker 3: As long as you got the shoes on, you know,
- 2:37Speaker 3: you gotta have the right tennis shoes or you can't
- 2:38Speaker 3: be part of the cult.
- 2:39Speaker 1: I mean, Once your religious leader is picking out your
- 2:44Speaker 1: shoes for you.
- 2:45Speaker 2: It's time.
- 2:47Speaker 3: I feel like that says something about your cult. I'm like,
- 2:49Speaker 3: if the most important thing he has to worry about
- 2:52Speaker 3: is what.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Shoes you're wearing, you might be in the wrong cult.
- 2:55Speaker 1: It's like the UFO is like Studio 54 and you're
- 2:58Speaker 1: wearing the wrong stuff. They're not going to let you in.
- 3:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:01Speaker 2: There's a bouncer at the door of Heaven's Gate.
- 3:03Speaker 1: No, no, no. You, you two.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Hot chicks. Hot chicks. You can come in. You can
- 3:08Speaker 2: come in.
- 3:08Speaker 1: No, no.
- 3:09Speaker 2: You losers stay over there with your tennis shoes.
- 3:11Speaker 1: That's right. With your tennis shoes. Where's your white kids?
- 3:16Speaker 2: Once again, we have distracted even your introduction. So, sir,
- 3:21Speaker 2: as the case may be.
- 3:22Speaker 1: Sam Drog. We'll be Sam today. And we'll be Sam.
- 3:26Speaker 3: All right. If you've heard these episodes before, none of
- 3:29Speaker 3: this will come as a surprise to you.
- 3:31Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:31Speaker 3: This is how they all start in the middle and end.
- 3:34Speaker 3: So you'll be fine.
- 3:36Speaker 1: God bless ADHD.
- 3:40Speaker 2: And the medication that serves you.
- 3:42Speaker 1: And the medication I did not take.
- 3:45Speaker 2: We can't tell at all.
- 3:46Speaker 1: I don't know what you're talking about.
- 3:47Speaker 4: Absolutely. Yeah, man.
- 3:48Speaker 1: Excellent.
- 3:49Speaker 2: Excellent. So it had been a while. I was, I was,
- 3:54Speaker 2: I was missing the Sam fix.
- 3:56Speaker 3: And I was like, this, this week i think i'm
- 3:59Speaker 3: gonna see if he's up for it and sucker that
- 4:01Speaker 3: you all fell right into.
- 4:03Speaker 1: My trap no no no this is the uh i
- 4:06Speaker 1: look this is the only zoom call i look forward
- 4:09Speaker 1: to this is the only one i do really yeah yeah.
- 4:14Speaker 2: I try to stay off of.
- 4:15Speaker 3: It during the show normally but once again we haven't
- 4:18Speaker 3: figured out that transport portal type of thing if we
- 4:21Speaker 3: could come up with some sort of Doctor Strange portal
- 4:24Speaker 3: to just get there within seconds. It would make this
- 4:26Speaker 3: a lot easier.
- 4:27Speaker 2: To do, but instead we have to use this Zoom portal,
- 4:31Speaker 2: which is... It's fine. Whatever.
- 4:33Speaker 1: So, the question is if they invent teleportation and the only...
- 4:41Speaker 1: And the only side effect is it gives you explosive diarrhea.
- 4:48Speaker 3: Yeah. Are you going to want to be on the
- 4:52Speaker 3: other end of that process? See, if they do and
- 4:58Speaker 3: they create it, will they at least make the portal
- 5:01Speaker 3: boxes look exactly like Cronenberg's The Fly? Even if it
- 5:06Speaker 3: works right, when you get in, you're like, oh man,
- 5:09Speaker 3: I am screwed. Oh God.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's the same portal, but it's got
- 5:16Speaker 1: a toilet there because as soon as you come over,
- 5:18Speaker 1: it's six seven minutes of non-stop a river runs through
- 5:25Speaker 1: it you know anthony hopkins uh academy award winning uh
- 5:31Speaker 1: actor uh.
- 5:32Speaker 2: Get pretty pretty brad pitt.
- 5:34Speaker 1: Come on yeah that was his most pretty maybe that
- 5:37Speaker 1: was yeah it's it's it's it's disturbing how how people
- 5:43Speaker 1: and pretty people in their prime are like uh it's
- 5:47Speaker 1: like psychotically pretty, you know?
- 5:51Speaker 3: It's almost just like- Weird offshoot from where you were
- 5:53Speaker 3: just at, but- It reminded me, we sold t-shirts of
- 5:57Speaker 3: that back in the olden days at the old video store.
- 6:01Speaker 3: Most of our shirts were just like super geek heavy.
- 6:04Speaker 3: Just here's your Star Wars stuff.
- 6:05Speaker 1: Here's your super geeky.
- 6:07Speaker 2: Mostly again, 99% guy stuff, guy stuff, you know?
- 6:10Speaker 3: And then that movie came out and there was that
- 6:13Speaker 3: reclined flowing hair.
- 6:15Speaker 2: Shot of Brad on a black t-shirt. And underneath it,
- 6:19Speaker 2: it said, legends of the fall oh my.
- 6:21Speaker 5: Gosh ladies lined up and i was just like well
- 6:26Speaker 5: they found one they found something that wasn't a dorky
- 6:29Speaker 5: guy property to sell a t-shirt and i was i
- 6:31Speaker 5: was pretty proud of them.
- 6:32Speaker 1: Yeah yeah yeah that's that's just like something it's almost
- 6:35Speaker 1: like movies starring those people or like it's almost like
- 6:38Speaker 1: a zoo that is like they bought a zoo no
- 6:42Speaker 1: that's matt damon No, no. Zoo. Oh, we bought the zoo.
- 6:47Speaker 3: Different pretty dude, I guess.
- 6:49Speaker 2: Not quite Brad Pritt and his prime pretty, but he's
- 6:52Speaker 2: all right.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah. No, no, no. He kind
- 6:56Speaker 1: of looks like a... He looks to me not like
- 7:00Speaker 1: a special ops person. He looks to me like a
- 7:03Speaker 1: really intense, like a Denny's manager. Nowadays, nowadays, I mean,
- 7:10Speaker 1: I guess his talent, a bit.
- 7:10Speaker 3: Of like the informant guy was his true calling.
- 7:14Speaker 2: Like, right. Right.
- 7:15Speaker 1: Right.
- 7:15Speaker 6: Right.
- 7:15Speaker 2: Was like his real identity and everything else is just
- 7:18Speaker 2: a lie.
- 7:19Speaker 1: That's right. That's right. Back when he first became popular,
- 7:21Speaker 1: my brother said the only role he should play is
- 7:24Speaker 1: Is the mean, whatchamacallit, rowing captain of the evil rowing
- 7:30Speaker 1: team on a rowing team, you know, underdog story.
- 7:35Speaker 2: Like an 80s movie? Like Up the Creek, only a
- 7:37Speaker 2: rowing team version of Up the Creek.
- 7:40Speaker 1: Right, exactly. That's the only role he should ever be
- 7:45Speaker 1: allowed to play.
- 7:46Speaker 3: I love the amount of tangents and nonsense there. and
- 7:49Speaker 3: references we've already gotten.
- 7:50Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't even know how long we've been recording.
- 7:53Speaker 1: What's going on?
- 7:54Speaker 2: Hours, hours already.
- 7:57Speaker 1: So I'm trying to backtrack a few things here. Yes,
- 8:01Speaker 1: go ahead.
- 8:01Speaker 2: Transportation.
- 8:03Speaker 1: Sure, transportation, diarrhea.
- 8:05Speaker 2: First of all, you're not the.
- 8:06Speaker 3: First person on this show to bring up the possibility
- 8:09Speaker 3: of transportation.
- 8:11Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Teleportation.
- 8:13Speaker 2: Whether or not.
- 8:14Speaker 3: You remember that episode, but there's at least one person
- 8:18Speaker 3: on the show who's brought up the fact that teleportation
- 8:21Speaker 3: is real and we have the technology. So you're not
- 8:23Speaker 3: alone in that.
- 8:24Speaker 2: Well, like, what?
- 8:27Speaker 1: I didn't say that, did I?
- 8:28Speaker 3: No, no.
- 8:29Speaker 2: No joke. It was legitimately someone else, and they weren't joking.
- 8:33Speaker 2: They may have been crazy, but they weren't joking.
- 8:35Speaker 1: Sure, okay.
- 8:36Speaker 2: We'll leave that for another time.
- 8:37Speaker 1: All right, all right. But the.
- 8:40Speaker 2: The thing I have is because you brought it up. Right.
- 8:44Speaker 2: That's why I went with my Doctor Strange portal.
- 8:46Speaker 3: I came up with a new option after watching all
- 8:48Speaker 3: your Marvel movies because I was like, well, that just
- 8:50Speaker 3: opens up a portal in space and time. You walk through,
- 8:53Speaker 3: you're in the new place. That one doesn't creep me out.
- 8:56Speaker 3: If you're doing Star Trek version.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Oh, no, no, no, no.
- 8:59Speaker 2: It's like it.
- 8:59Speaker 1: No. You're dead.
- 9:01Speaker 2: It disassembles you.
- 9:03Speaker 1: Yes.
- 9:03Speaker 2: And reassembles you somewhere else. That's not you anymore. It's
- 9:07Speaker 2: like a copy of you.
- 9:09Speaker 1: Right.
- 9:09Speaker 3: And then eventually you go all kinds of places and
- 9:11Speaker 3: it's a copy of a copy of a, and then
- 9:13Speaker 3: it's just multiplicity and you're just smacking yourself in the
- 9:15Speaker 3: head with something.
- 9:16Speaker 1: That's right. It's like problems. It is problems. It is problems.
- 9:21Speaker 1: They never really address that enough. You know, I mean,
- 9:24Speaker 1: Star Trek motion picture kind of got into it a
- 9:26Speaker 1: little bit, you know, but which I just recently watched.
- 9:31Speaker 2: And you're awake currently?
- 9:33Speaker 1: Wait a minute.
- 9:33Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
- 9:34Speaker 1: No, no, no. Can we just talk a moment about
- 9:37Speaker 1: motion picture?
- 9:38Speaker 4: Okay.
- 9:39Speaker 3: It has been a long time since I've seen it.
- 9:42Speaker 3: And it feels like it's still going on right now.
- 9:44Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:45Speaker 2: Okay. All right.
- 9:46Speaker 1: It's a totally different breed. By the time you get to, like,
- 9:49Speaker 1: Star Trek 3, it's, like, a completely different type of series, right?
- 9:52Speaker 4: Oh, even 2.
- 9:53Speaker 2: Like, I think 2 turns that corner hard.
- 9:55Speaker 3: Hard.
- 9:56Speaker 2: Because I just rewatched that when talking to the director.
- 9:59Speaker 2: And I was like... Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 10:00Speaker 3: You're doing a whole different thing than what they handed
- 10:03Speaker 3: you like that's amazing so yeah okay but but going
- 10:07Speaker 3: back a movie what is your right motion picture right
- 10:11Speaker 3: it's it's boring as hell right but but it's got
- 10:15Speaker 3: this kind of gravitas to it.
- 10:17Speaker 1: And it's actually trying to deal with an interesting idea,
- 10:21Speaker 1: you know, but here's the thing that kind of blew
- 10:25Speaker 1: me away and sort of like, this is maybe revisiting movies.
- 10:29Speaker 1: You used to love maybe the theme of the show here.
- 10:34Speaker 1: Cause I've got a couple that I've revisited recently that
- 10:37Speaker 1: didn't hold up. But Star Trek mission picture actually held
- 10:41Speaker 1: up more for me this time. But you remember the
- 10:45Speaker 1: scene at the beginning where they take 12 minutes to
- 10:50Speaker 1: drive around and park the little pod into the Enterprise.
- 10:53Speaker 3: I feel like that's the whole reason for that movie.
- 10:56Speaker 3: They were like, look, I just saw 2001.
- 10:58Speaker 2: 2001, right. And I just want to see a.
- 11:03Speaker 3: Version of that only with the Enterprise.
- 11:05Speaker 2: And they were like, well, let's see how many millions
- 11:08Speaker 2: we can get together. Right.
- 11:10Speaker 3: Right.
- 11:10Speaker 1: Exactly. Exactly. It's basically saying like, look, we're not going
- 11:12Speaker 1: to do Star Wars. We're going to do 2001 and
- 11:14Speaker 1: we're going to, we're going to make Star Wars is
- 11:18Speaker 1: like science fantasy. This is hard science fiction. This is
- 11:22Speaker 1: for the real geeks. This isn't like for the nerd stuff, man.
- 11:25Speaker 1: This is real nerd stuff. This isn't going to appeal
- 11:27Speaker 1: to the general masses. This is only for people, you know,
- 11:30Speaker 1: who are like.
- 11:31Speaker 3: You know, sitting home on Sunday morning, writing for Star
- 11:34Speaker 3: Trek to start.
- 11:35Speaker 1: That's right.
- 11:36Speaker 2: Right.
- 11:36Speaker 3: Right.
- 11:36Speaker 1: Right. That scene though, we're, it takes them 45 minutes
- 11:40Speaker 1: to find a parking spot.
- 11:43Speaker 2: And they're the only ship.
- 11:44Speaker 1: And their other ship, the wave in space guy. Hey,
- 11:48Speaker 1: it's over there. That's probably the parking attendant. Say like,
- 11:51Speaker 1: you've passed it back. Go back. That scene. When I
- 11:56Speaker 1: first saw it, I love that scene. And I was like,
- 12:03Speaker 1: the enterprise is so huge. Look how huge the enterprise is.
- 12:08Speaker 1: It goes, It is massive. Look how massive this enterprise is.
- 12:12Speaker 1: And I watched it the other day. I was going like,
- 12:14Speaker 1: wait a second, that's just a model.
- 12:18Speaker 2: That is not that big. You thought it was actually
- 12:21Speaker 2: to scale built? They were like, they really spent their
- 12:24Speaker 2: millions hardcore. They were like, they built a full scale enterprise.
- 12:27Speaker 1: Holy cow, they went to space. I was just so much,
- 12:31Speaker 1: I was just, as a kid, I was able to
- 12:32Speaker 1: suspend my disbelief. When I watched it the other day,
- 12:36Speaker 1: I was like, I think I see some brushstrokes. Or
- 12:39Speaker 1: I was going like, look at that little tinted glass window.
- 12:42Speaker 1: There's nobody in there.
- 12:44Speaker 2: That's just a model. This whole thing's a sham.
- 12:46Speaker 1: This whole thing's a lie. This is a lie. This
- 12:50Speaker 1: is all a lie.
- 12:51Speaker 2: Movies have been lying to me all this time.
- 12:53Speaker 1: But I was going like, holy cow. I really used
- 12:57Speaker 1: to be able to, but watching it the other day,
- 13:00Speaker 1: I was going like, wait a second. I mean, I
- 13:03Speaker 1: know everybody knows this already. This is not going to
- 13:05Speaker 1: be news to anybody who listens.
- 13:07Speaker 2: You know, Star Trek isn't real.
- 13:10Speaker 1: Right. Wait a minute.
- 13:12Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 13:12Speaker 1: But I was just like, I.
- 13:13Speaker 3: Already suspect the Millennium Falcon's not really flying.
- 13:17Speaker 2: Hold on a minute. This is all coming together.
- 13:20Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 13:21Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:21Speaker 1: It was weird. It was a weird experience. I was
- 13:24Speaker 1: going like, okay, so that's, that's like a model. That's really.
- 13:28Speaker 3: As time's going on, I've gone like, I guess I
- 13:31Speaker 3: knew that at some point, but now I've, I've.
- 13:34Speaker 2: Leaned the other way.
- 13:35Speaker 3: And so now when I look at that, I'm like,
- 13:37Speaker 3: freaking impressive that model. So I go to the other
- 13:41Speaker 3: geek extreme of just like, okay, dudes and random ladies
- 13:45Speaker 3: had to build these things. Look how meticulously everything was
- 13:49Speaker 3: put together and the brush strokes.
- 13:51Speaker 2: Are barely noticeable.
- 13:52Speaker 1: Oh yeah. You really can't, you really can't see I'm
- 13:54Speaker 1: being mean and everything, but I'm just saying, I'm just saying, no, I,
- 13:58Speaker 1: and I agree with you, Brian. It's a, it's a,
- 14:00Speaker 1: an amazing feat. of, uh, the way they shot it
- 14:04Speaker 1: and the way they use the right lenses to make
- 14:07Speaker 1: it look really big and did all the tricks in
- 14:09Speaker 1: the book to make that scene work as well. I
- 14:13Speaker 1: was just, it was just, uh, it was just like, Oh,
- 14:16Speaker 1: wait a minute. I haven't seen this, you know, in
- 14:18Speaker 1: 20 years and, you know, now with CG and everything,
- 14:22Speaker 1: everything's so detailed and so precise and, you know, maybe, Oh,
- 14:26Speaker 1: too much movement, you know, too much stuff going on
- 14:28Speaker 1: in a shot.
- 14:29Speaker 3: But, um, But even when it doesn't look good, I
- 14:33Speaker 3: appreciate it. Like sometimes I will see your super low
- 14:37Speaker 3: budget set. Well, and again, this is a weird thing
- 14:40Speaker 3: about maybe just.
- 14:41Speaker 2: Being an old man.
- 14:41Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 14:42Speaker 2: But when it's older stuff, when it's.
- 14:44Speaker 3: Stuff that like I know they physically built everything there.
- 14:47Speaker 3: Like I just look at it and go, yes, I
- 14:50Speaker 3: know your controller for that ship is a PVC pipe.
- 14:53Speaker 3: but somebody had to go to the home Depot and
- 14:55Speaker 3: cut off a piece of PVC pipe and they weld
- 14:58Speaker 3: it together next to this thing.
- 15:00Speaker 2: And they super glue this thing on. And like, even
- 15:02Speaker 2: when it looks like crap, I'm just like.
- 15:04Speaker 3: Somebody put a lot of time into building this thing.
- 15:06Speaker 3: That's totally fake and doesn't do anything. Right.
- 15:09Speaker 1: Right.
- 15:10Speaker 7: Right.
- 15:10Speaker 1: That's kind of awesome.
- 15:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:12Speaker 1: It's totally awesome. It's totally awesome. Cause it, it exists and,
- 15:16Speaker 1: And I tell you, the one you got to see
- 15:18Speaker 1: is it's a John Saxon movie. And it's called Queen
- 15:22Speaker 1: of Blood.
- 15:23Speaker 2: I was going to say that's.
- 15:24Speaker 1: At least 28.
- 15:24Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah. He's in so many. I love that man,
- 15:29Speaker 2: but he made a lot of low budget movies.
- 15:31Speaker 1: Holy shit.
- 15:31Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 15:32Speaker 1: And yes, he did. Well, this is John Saxon and
- 15:34Speaker 1: Dennis Hopper together.
- 15:36Speaker 3: At last.
- 15:38Speaker 1: Yeah, right. First time ever on the big screen. At first.
- 15:43Speaker 2: Since it's like Dennis Hopper's first movie. Finally, at first.
- 15:47Speaker 1: Yeah, right, exactly. Queen of Blood. So this guy, they
- 15:52Speaker 1: got the footage from a Soviet space movie and then
- 15:57Speaker 1: used all the effects shots, kind of like those knockoff
- 16:00Speaker 1: Indian Star Wars, Turkish Star Wars or something.
- 16:04Speaker 3: I've heard the story of this movie. I don't remember
- 16:06Speaker 3: if I sat down and watched it. But yeah, I
- 16:08Speaker 3: do remember they just sort of took someone else's movie.
- 16:11Speaker 3: Let's shoot some scenes for it.
- 16:14Speaker 1: Right.
- 16:14Speaker 2: Right.
- 16:14Speaker 1: And it's, it's pretty terrible, but it's got the effect
- 16:19Speaker 1: shots from, I guess, you know, uh, Soviet Russia. I
- 16:23Speaker 1: guess there was a lot of pressure to be awesome.
- 16:26Speaker 1: So they're amazing. Right.
- 16:28Speaker 3: But they are like effect shots. It's not like stuff
- 16:31Speaker 3: they actually shot in space. Cause they were also doing
- 16:34Speaker 3: that too.
- 16:35Speaker 2: Right. Right.
- 16:36Speaker 3: Right.
- 16:37Speaker 1: Ah, we lost another one. Um, but, uh, But yeah, no,
- 16:41Speaker 1: the effect shots are amazing. Dennis Hopper is really funny
- 16:46Speaker 1: because you can tell he doesn't even know he's in
- 16:49Speaker 1: a movie.
- 16:51Speaker 2: He's on so many drugs, even then.
- 16:54Speaker 1: Even then.
- 16:54Speaker 3: He was just like, hey man, I don't know where
- 16:56Speaker 3: I am right now, but this shit looks crazy.
- 17:00Speaker 1: I guess I'm supposed to like be hitting on this
- 17:03Speaker 1: green woman. Anyway, it's a throwaway movie, but if you
- 17:08Speaker 1: want amazing handmade effects, this thing really was incredible. That's
- 17:17Speaker 1: a recommendation, but that was, yeah.
- 17:19Speaker 3: A lot of those ones from that time period, that's
- 17:22Speaker 3: the ones I'm always so impressed with.
- 17:23Speaker 2: Cause I'm like, yes, I know it's not real.
- 17:26Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 17:27Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 17:27Speaker 2: Look how many things they built for this. Not real nonsense.
- 17:31Speaker 1: It just, I think more people should get together and
- 17:35Speaker 1: dedicate themselves to doing nonsense because then you're not really heard.
- 17:40Speaker 1: That's kind of like what the movie industry was. Let's
- 17:44Speaker 1: get this whole population together. Let's keep them from, you know,
- 17:47Speaker 1: committing crimes and robberies. We're just going to put them
- 17:50Speaker 1: all in this little like fake universe so they can
- 17:52Speaker 1: keep themselves busy making nonsense.
- 17:55Speaker 2: So that's the working end of it.
- 17:57Speaker 3: And then you're also like then after the fact, we
- 17:59Speaker 3: can just get them together in a dark room and
- 18:01Speaker 3: they'll be there.
- 18:02Speaker 2: For like two hours, not destroying things or hurting each other.
- 18:05Speaker 2: Like they'll just sit there and be quiet and calm.
- 18:08Speaker 3: And that's like the system as a whole is just
- 18:10Speaker 3: like a just like an overwhelmed parent. They're like, just
- 18:14Speaker 3: give me two hours of peace.
- 18:17Speaker 2: Just please. Just sit still and stop doing stupid things
- 18:21Speaker 2: for like two hours.
- 18:22Speaker 1: That's all I want. Because if you give these hominids
- 18:25Speaker 1: too much time on their hands, they're going to start
- 18:28Speaker 1: fighting with each other, picking each other apart.
- 18:31Speaker 2: And we do.
- 18:32Speaker 1: And we do. Let's make some nonsense to distract them.
- 18:39Speaker 2: And that's what brings us here today.
- 18:42Speaker 1: Nonsense.
- 18:43Speaker 2: That's at least distracting the two of us.
- 18:45Speaker 1: There we go.
- 18:46Speaker 3: I don't know if anybody else out there is going
- 18:48Speaker 3: to go along with this nonsense, but by the time
- 18:52Speaker 3: we're done, we're both going to be.
- 18:53Speaker 2: Thrilled with it, I'm sure.
- 18:54Speaker 1: I agree.
- 18:55Speaker 2: I agree.
- 18:56Speaker 1: This is exactly what we need to be doing. And so, yeah,
- 18:59Speaker 1: not only the creation and viewing of movies is a
- 19:03Speaker 1: huge distraction of nonsense, but then you know, you're not really,
- 19:08Speaker 1: you haven't really seen anything until you've discussed it on
- 19:12Speaker 1: a podcast.
- 19:14Speaker 2: I don't think it counts personally.
- 19:16Speaker 1: It doesn't until you've digested and spoken about it. It's
- 19:20Speaker 1: kind of like after you see a movie, you know,
- 19:22Speaker 1: I wait to read any reviews until I see it.
- 19:24Speaker 1: And then I go through who agreed with me, you know, who,
- 19:26Speaker 1: who saw what I saw, you know, start sifting through
- 19:29Speaker 1: the documentation.
- 19:30Speaker 2: That is a special level of enjoyment. Yes. I was,
- 19:34Speaker 2: because if you remember, Not to change genres.
- 19:39Speaker 3: But we did three full lengthy episodes on the rebooting
- 19:45Speaker 3: of Halloween.
- 19:47Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 19:48Speaker 2: And we had a lot of things. to say in
- 19:50Speaker 2: the old horror club.
- 19:52Speaker 3: And then randomly, like a week or so ago, I
- 19:55Speaker 3: was just like finding something on YouTube to kill a
- 19:59Speaker 3: few minutes while I was doing something just to distract
- 20:01Speaker 3: me to hear talking, which is most of my days now.
- 20:04Speaker 2: Just someone else talking in my head to keep the
- 20:07Speaker 2: voices quiet. So I was doing that.
- 20:10Speaker 3: And quite often I bring up the pitch meetings. I
- 20:14Speaker 3: am thoroughly entertained by those anyway.
- 20:16Speaker 1: You're right.
- 20:17Speaker 2: Oh my God. Like I went through.
- 20:19Speaker 3: Those last three and like they get better. Like the
- 20:22Speaker 3: first one is just like enough of the, but wait,
- 20:25Speaker 3: we already did. There's already two movies with that title.
- 20:27Speaker 2: You're going to call it.
- 20:28Speaker 3: So like it starts with the basic stuff, but because
- 20:31Speaker 3: the stories themselves get so ridiculous as the sequels go on,
- 20:36Speaker 3: like I was about to injure myself. laughing at two
- 20:39Speaker 3: and three oh god and and the reason it was
- 20:42Speaker 3: hitting me so hard he's like no no we talked
- 20:44Speaker 3: about that no we talked about that too like he
- 20:47Speaker 3: was hitting all the.
- 20:48Speaker 2: Points of the stuff that we specifically made.
- 20:50Speaker 3: Fun of and i was like there's just a level
- 20:52Speaker 3: of appreciation that's so much more when you're like but
- 20:56Speaker 3: yes i also thought that was stupid you know yeah
- 20:58Speaker 3: yeah yeah i'm telling you No, no, totally.
- 21:01Speaker 1: And then when, you know, when you read it from
- 21:02Speaker 1: a reviewer, you know, you go like, Oh good. Somebody,
- 21:06Speaker 1: I wasn't just crazy, you know, that was bugging somebody else,
- 21:10Speaker 1: you know?
- 21:11Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 21:11Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 21:11Speaker 1: No, those Halloween movies, those are the first one's got
- 21:15Speaker 1: some moments, but those are garbage. And, and, and part
- 21:20Speaker 1: two is probably, we probably talked about this last time.
- 21:23Speaker 1: Cause it was like, I mean, it's, it's wrong to
- 21:27Speaker 1: get this up, but I think it's like a, laugh
- 21:31Speaker 1: riot classic.
- 21:32Speaker 2: I mean, it kind of, that's the thing.
- 21:34Speaker 3: Like, I'm like, these are not good as Halloween movies,
- 21:38Speaker 3: but as entertainment.
- 21:40Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 21:41Speaker 2: They're so insane. Yeah.
- 21:44Speaker 1: It's weird to see such train wrecks shot so well
- 21:49Speaker 1: and so much, slick production and a list talent.
- 21:54Speaker 2: Like you're bringing in great actors. Like you're, you're putting
- 21:57Speaker 2: it on the screen visually effects wise, everything's there. And
- 22:01Speaker 2: then you get to the story and you're like, what
- 22:03Speaker 2: are we doing?
- 22:04Speaker 1: I don't, I mean, people have, you know, people have
- 22:09Speaker 1: secret lives, but Danny McBride being, uh, again, the guys
- 22:13Speaker 1: who did pineapple express to take over the Halloween franchise, uh,
- 22:17Speaker 1: It's just a really weird.
- 22:19Speaker 3: See, if you went back in time and told yourself that,
- 22:22Speaker 3: you'd be like, shut up.
- 22:24Speaker 2: Right. No way.
- 22:27Speaker 1: It's almost like Jordan Peele.
- 22:31Speaker 1: Uh, like came in a horror master, right? Right. He's
- 22:34Speaker 1: a comedy guy, but now he's a horror master. It
- 22:36Speaker 1: was like, Ooh, who else can we get? Who does
- 22:37Speaker 1: comedy that might have secret are latent abilities and, um,
- 22:42Speaker 1: you know, Danny McBride, let's go carrot top. Who else?
- 22:45Speaker 2: Don't invite it. Next thing you know, they'll be giving
- 22:48Speaker 2: him the Ninja turtles.
- 22:49Speaker 3: Oh, oh no wait that's a different comedy guy I
- 22:53Speaker 3: mean at least they are comedy but what a weird
- 22:56Speaker 3: turn there too of like let's take a recognizable dude
- 23:00Speaker 3: and give him this other thing.
- 23:01Speaker 2: That's really sort of successful.
- 23:04Speaker 3: Because it doesn't ever really go away but at the
- 23:06Speaker 3: same time there hasn't been a fun movie that anybody
- 23:08Speaker 3: liked in about 25 years so like it's weird that
- 23:13Speaker 3: they keep hammering away at that turtles idea because it's
- 23:15Speaker 3: just I guess it just mints money and toys.
- 23:18Speaker 1: For It does.
- 23:20Speaker 2: That's their takeaway.
- 23:21Speaker 3: It's like, we got to keep this thing going. Then
- 23:23Speaker 3: we keep selling toys. No matter how many terrible movies
- 23:25Speaker 3: we make, we keep selling toys.
- 23:27Speaker 1: It worked for George. It worked for us.
- 23:31Speaker 2: You know, we can keep making money. That's all we want.
- 23:34Speaker 1: Well, it's, and it's really, it's just, it's not, it's
- 23:36Speaker 1: not toys for children. It's, it's toys for the perpetual
- 23:40Speaker 1: children that grew up on the first time. That's right.
- 23:43Speaker 1: That's right. I saw somebody. poses up that yeah i
- 23:46Speaker 1: bring in six figures a month you know but it
- 23:48Speaker 1: was like star wars.
- 23:49Speaker 3: Figures okay that's only funny because it's true right right
- 23:57Speaker 3: as someone who buys a lot of crap they don't
- 23:59Speaker 3: need i yeah i get it i try to back
- 24:02Speaker 3: off on the toys but i find new ridiculous things
- 24:05Speaker 3: to oh i should start collecting that should you really
- 24:09Speaker 3: yeah i think you should Yeah, I mean, I read
- 24:13Speaker 3: this book, Paperbacks from Hell, which is just, you know,
- 24:19Speaker 3: about the paperback horror novels from the 60s, 70s, and 80s.
- 24:26Speaker 1: You know? And you, I don't know, do you remember
- 24:29Speaker 1: going to, like, Eckerd Drugs or whatever drugstore was in
- 24:33Speaker 1: your area, and you'd go in, and they had, like,
- 24:36Speaker 1: you know, the giant racks of paperbacks, and, you know...
- 24:40Speaker 1: say what you.
- 24:40Speaker 2: Gotta have the spinner racks the spinner racks.
- 24:43Speaker 1: Of the of the yeah the the pocket paperbacks you
- 24:46Speaker 1: know and everything and the and the artwork was always
- 24:48Speaker 1: so like oh my god.
- 24:50Speaker 3: That was what won me over i you know as
- 24:52Speaker 3: you well know i'm illiterate so i didn't bother grabbing
- 24:55Speaker 3: them to read but i was so fascinated with the
- 24:58Speaker 3: artwork on all of those horror books and eventually i
- 25:01Speaker 3: got into the sci-fi ones too but the horror books
- 25:04Speaker 3: were just from the get-go were just.
- 25:05Speaker 1: Amazing amazing amazing i did like uh So yeah, I
- 25:10Speaker 1: read that. So I got this whole list of things
- 25:12Speaker 1: that I'm going like, Conkle, you do not need to
- 25:14Speaker 1: start hitting used bookstores and just collecting these things. You
- 25:17Speaker 1: don't need to. A, the print's so small, you can't
- 25:20Speaker 1: even read them anyway. There's your problem.
- 25:25Speaker 2: But you have to be careful because that's a slippery slope.
- 25:28Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 25:29Speaker 3: As I well know, not personally, but a certain member
- 25:33Speaker 3: of this crew will say is a.
- 25:36Speaker 2: Hardcore book nerd and Yeah, kind of always was.
- 25:40Speaker 3: But like in the last, I don't know, eight years
- 25:43Speaker 3: or so, it hit like this new it hit an
- 25:45Speaker 3: extra gear that I didn't think we knew was there.
- 25:48Speaker 3: And like, essentially now I rarely even go over there.
- 25:51Speaker 3: I just see photos, photos from inside the house. And
- 25:54Speaker 3: I'm just like, that's just a library.
- 25:56Speaker 2: Like you're just living in a library now, which is
- 25:59Speaker 2: still kind of awesome.
- 26:00Speaker 3: I mean, I'd live at a library and I don't
- 26:02Speaker 3: know how to read, but there's still people.
- 26:03Speaker 2: To hang out in, you know? So yeah, I'm getting
- 26:07Speaker 2: that bad with the movies.
- 26:08Speaker 3: I keep, but I go the other way because I,
- 26:11Speaker 3: I went for a while there and I quit buying.
- 26:13Speaker 2: Stuff because a, I was poor. And like, and at
- 26:17Speaker 2: one point I was in like.
- 26:18Speaker 3: A relationship that, you know, so you like are distracted
- 26:23Speaker 3: with other things, like having a life with someone.
- 26:25Speaker 2: Well, that went away a long time ago. And I'm
- 26:28Speaker 2: assuming never coming back.
- 26:29Speaker 3: So now in that meantime, movies have gone down to
- 26:33Speaker 3: like giveaway prices.
- 26:35Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 26:35Speaker 2: For some of them. Yeah.
- 26:37Speaker 3: So I keep running into stuff that I'm like, Oh,
- 26:39Speaker 3: I meant to watch that. Oh, I haven't seen that
- 26:42Speaker 3: in years. Oh.
- 26:43Speaker 2: And for like, you know, a buck on DVD these days,
- 26:46Speaker 2: like you can pick up all these things. Yeah. Yeah.
- 26:50Speaker 2: So I keep, so now I'm back into like cramming.
- 26:53Speaker 1: Okay.
- 26:53Speaker 3: Where can I put this stack of movies that I
- 26:56Speaker 3: haven't got around to watch yet? And like, so I'm
- 26:58Speaker 3: back in the physical media world more than I've been
- 27:01Speaker 3: for a long time because now it's so cheap. but
- 27:05Speaker 3: then it's the other side of the deal. Cause then
- 27:07Speaker 3: I also find like the special edition collectors, Blu-rays that
- 27:11Speaker 3: aren't super cheap. And I'm like, Oh, but I need
- 27:13Speaker 3: that obviously. And then I spend too much on that too.
- 27:15Speaker 3: So no, no, too many things.
- 27:18Speaker 1: I had to go on a sabbatical. I did also stop, uh,
- 27:23Speaker 1: sell buying DVDs like long time ago. And actually it
- 27:27Speaker 1: sold all my DVDs at one point. That's crazy talk. Yeah,
- 27:30Speaker 1: I know. I'm stupid, but, uh, desperate times, desperate measures.
- 27:36Speaker 2: I got 25 cents for this one.
- 27:39Speaker 1: Just trying to make your monthly nut. All those DVDs
- 27:46Speaker 1: went away at one point. Anyway, it all went away
- 27:52Speaker 1: and then just in the pandemic, at some point, somebody
- 27:56Speaker 1: gave me a projector and then.
- 27:59Speaker 2: Now you're even more fancy and high-tech.
- 28:01Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 28:01Speaker 1: Well, I'm telling you. So then you get a projector
- 28:04Speaker 1: and I knew this was going to happen. I got
- 28:06Speaker 1: a projector. And so now it's a slippery slope. So
- 28:09Speaker 1: now all your DVDs look like the ones that you
- 28:12Speaker 1: didn't sell all look like crap projected. But now you
- 28:16Speaker 1: got to go to Blu-ray. But then you have to.
- 28:19Speaker 2: Be extra high def and then you got to get
- 28:21Speaker 2: a 4K and then you got to get a 7K.
- 28:23Speaker 3: I don't know. They'll keep upgrading stuff. So you have
- 28:26Speaker 3: to keep getting better stuff.
- 28:28Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:28Speaker 3: That's why I think I'm okay with, like, I don't
- 28:31Speaker 3: have a fancy TV. I barely have a functioning Blu-ray player.
- 28:35Speaker 2: Like, as long as I can see it, it's fine.
- 28:38Speaker 1: Right, right, right.
- 28:40Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 28:40Speaker 1: And there's something nice about it being on the shelf.
- 28:43Speaker 1: It's something nice about you have access to it easily,
- 28:46Speaker 1: you know. And this is going to be real tech nerd.
- 28:51Speaker 1: I feel like this sounds real tech nerdy. But it's
- 28:54Speaker 1: really like you do see the difference in the streaming.
- 28:58Speaker 1: But mainly is my setup. I can't get. Listen to this.
- 29:04Speaker 1: I'm just going to punch myself in the face.
- 29:05Speaker 2: Okay. I mean, you'll save a lot of bullies trouble.
- 29:08Speaker 2: So go ahead.
- 29:10Speaker 1: All right. Look, look, when I stream and it's probably
- 29:13Speaker 1: just my system, I can't get. Oh, my gosh. I'm
- 29:15Speaker 1: just going to punch myself in the face right now.
- 29:17Speaker 1: All right. I can't get 5.1 surround sound on streaming.
- 29:21Speaker 1: I can only get stereo. And so my Blu-rays, they
- 29:24Speaker 1: have 5.1.
- 29:25Speaker 4: So it's more.
- 29:25Speaker 2: I don't know how.
- 29:28Speaker 1: Ow, my face. Ow, my face.
- 29:30Speaker 2: I don't know how you're living. I mean, if you
- 29:32Speaker 2: want to call that living.
- 29:33Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 29:35Speaker 1: Stereo picture. Oh, my God.
- 29:39Speaker 4: No.
- 29:40Speaker 1: Stereo sound. I must be immersed, Brian. Listen, Brian, you
- 29:43Speaker 1: don't understand. I must be immersed in the experience.
- 29:47Speaker 3: See, I recently a couple of times gone the other
- 29:51Speaker 3: way when I just something will strike me as like, oh.
- 29:54Speaker 2: I want to watch that movie. And it won't be
- 29:56Speaker 2: one of the 4,000 sitting over there that I haven't
- 29:59Speaker 2: gotten around to watching. I will be like, oh, but
- 30:01Speaker 2: I want to watch that. And then I'm like, I'm
- 30:04Speaker 2: too much of a bastard to rent stuff sometimes. So
- 30:07Speaker 2: I'm like, is it on YouTube? Is it just on YouTube?
- 30:09Speaker 3: Because I'll fully give you money for like a physical copy.
- 30:13Speaker 3: But renting a streaming just bugs the hell out of me.
- 30:16Speaker 3: So I'm like, can I just, I'm already paying for
- 30:19Speaker 3: too many services.
- 30:20Speaker 2: Why is it not on these? Just show up for
- 30:23Speaker 2: free somewhere.
- 30:25Speaker 3: So at least twice lately, I've found something and I'm like, okay, well,
- 30:29Speaker 3: here it is on YouTube or whatever.
- 30:31Speaker 2: And I'm like, wow, this is arguably the worst.
- 30:35Speaker 3: Visual presentation of something I have ever seen. But at
- 30:39Speaker 3: that point, I'm already like, but I did want to
- 30:41Speaker 3: see it.
- 30:41Speaker 2: And it's on right now. Yes.
- 30:44Speaker 3: And so I'll sit there and every five minutes I'll go,
- 30:46Speaker 3: oh man, this is terrible. I really need to stop,
- 30:48Speaker 3: but I want to finish watching. So I watched the
- 30:52Speaker 3: entire full length movie on what is way worse than
- 30:56Speaker 3: a VHS quality picture. Like it looks like garbage and
- 31:00Speaker 3: I still will finish the movie.
- 31:02Speaker 1: No, I, there is a charm to it when you're
- 31:05Speaker 1: watching that.
- 31:07Speaker 2: And this isn't charming. It's just annoying.
- 31:10Speaker 1: It reminds you of watching movies on super station. or
- 31:14Speaker 1: on 36, 36 was our, I don't know. We had 46,
- 31:18Speaker 1: 36 and super station 17.
- 31:20Speaker 2: We had better cable than that. Even back in the
- 31:23Speaker 2: old days, it didn't look this bad.
- 31:25Speaker 1: It's probably gravity. Brian, I've got a question for you.
- 31:29Speaker 2: Okay.
- 31:30Speaker 1: This is, this is my last YouTube movie I watched
- 31:34Speaker 1: and I didn't put it on my letterbox account. So
- 31:37Speaker 1: I don't know how is I'm even remembering that I
- 31:40Speaker 1: watched this. Okay. Um, about a week ago two weeks
- 31:45Speaker 1: ago uh walking down the street uh my because we
- 31:52Speaker 1: were talking about how we went to new york when
- 31:55Speaker 1: we went when my wife and i went in our
- 31:58Speaker 1: 20s we navigated everything fine when we went you know
- 32:02Speaker 1: in 2019 in our mid-40s.
- 32:03Speaker 3: We had a different experience It's a whole different world.
- 32:06Speaker 1: There was a point in New York where we got
- 32:09Speaker 1: so swallowed up by the subway system. I was almost
- 32:13Speaker 1: ready to give up and just say like, I think
- 32:15Speaker 1: we live in the subways now.
- 32:17Speaker 2: Back to the Ninja Turtles.
- 32:20Speaker 3: Right.
- 32:20Speaker 1: I was like, all right, this is like a Clive
- 32:23Speaker 1: Barker ish maze.
- 32:26Speaker 2: There was a midnight meat train running.
- 32:28Speaker 1: There's like a midnight meat train mixed with like a,
- 32:32Speaker 1: like a, like a like a doctor strange type you
- 32:36Speaker 1: know architecture morphing into hallways and were you running up
- 32:41Speaker 1: walls at some point at some point i was david
- 32:44Speaker 1: bowie was walking around you know.
- 32:46Speaker 3: There's no bad side to any of this what are
- 32:49Speaker 3: you talking about i was like god put on some
- 32:51Speaker 3: pants bowie come.
- 32:52Speaker 2: On uh or not or not.
- 32:55Speaker 1: Um and uh so so we were walking around And
- 32:58Speaker 1: I was just going like, I'm getting swallowed by the subway.
- 33:00Speaker 1: I think this is our new home. I will be
- 33:02Speaker 1: the rat catcher and you will be, you know, I
- 33:06Speaker 1: don't know. Splinter. Splinter.
- 33:09Speaker 2: And then you can have a rat and the rat catcher.
- 33:11Speaker 1: There we go.
- 33:12Speaker 2: A slice of pizza. Yeah.
- 33:13Speaker 1: Oh man, it's fantastic. I was planning my new life
- 33:17Speaker 1: down there. Anyway, so we were talking about that experience.
- 33:19Speaker 1: And then she goes, I remember this movie called, that
- 33:25Speaker 1: creeped me out as a kid about these people trapped
- 33:28Speaker 1: in a subway station. And they're trying to get out
- 33:34Speaker 1: of the subway station after like some, some disaster underneath,
- 33:37Speaker 1: you know?
- 33:39Speaker 2: And, and I can only hope it's some portion of daylight.
- 33:44Speaker 1: I was thinking daylight, right? I was thinking Stallone, the
- 33:46Speaker 1: classic Stallone, Stallone.
- 33:48Speaker 3: Movie, man.
- 33:49Speaker 1: Absolutely. Absolutely. high point of Stallone's career definitely.
- 33:52Speaker 2: I like that movie way more than most I like
- 33:54Speaker 2: that movie too.
- 33:55Speaker 3: Because I'm a Poseidon adventure guy so I'm like it's
- 33:58Speaker 3: just Poseidon adventure with Rocky in it this is great.
- 34:01Speaker 1: It's that CG stuff where they were kind of making
- 34:04Speaker 1: disaster movies were kind of making a comeback you know
- 34:07Speaker 1: in the.
- 34:07Speaker 8: Midnight they were trying they didn't work most of the
- 34:09Speaker 8: time no no but they were trying boy did they
- 34:13Speaker 8: try and and so yeah so I was thinking it
- 34:17Speaker 8: was daylight no she goes like no I was like
- 34:18Speaker 8: seven or eight I go like Brian, I had not
- 34:22Speaker 8: thought of this movie since I was probably six years old.
- 34:26Speaker 2: Okay.
- 34:27Speaker 1: And it popped into my head that I knew exactly
- 34:31Speaker 1: the movie she was talking about. And I was going like,
- 34:35Speaker 1: holy cow. This was one of the earliest movie memories
- 34:40Speaker 1: I have, you know, of seeing this movie. And I
- 34:43Speaker 1: go like, I know what movie you're talking about. And
- 34:45Speaker 1: it's got, anyway, I go like, but how will I
- 34:48Speaker 1: ever find it? We don't know the name.
- 34:51Speaker 3: All right.
- 34:52Speaker 1: Five seconds. Old people talking about technology. Five seconds into it,
- 35:00Speaker 1: go into a Google search. I find it. 20 seconds later,
- 35:04Speaker 1: I find it on YouTube. And then, you know, you're.
- 35:08Speaker 2: Standing lost in the subway watching it.
- 35:11Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. No, no kidding. So we're Anyway,
- 35:14Speaker 1: so yeah, the New York trip was years ago, but
- 35:18Speaker 1: that reminded her of this movie. That triggered this repressed
- 35:21Speaker 1: memory of the movie in my head that I hadn't
- 35:23Speaker 1: thought about. We go online, we find it on YouTube,
- 35:27Speaker 1: and we watch it. It's called Slow Walk to Sunlight.
- 35:32Speaker 1: I think that's what it's called. And it's got James Brolin.
- 35:35Speaker 1: It's a made-for-TV movie.
- 35:37Speaker 2: This doesn't sound like Walk to Remember at all.
- 35:39Speaker 1: Never mind.
- 35:41Speaker 2: That's my favorite movie.
- 35:43Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a disaster movie called Slow Walk to Sunset.
- 35:47Speaker 1: That sounds like a On Golden Pond type thing. But Slow,
- 35:51Speaker 1: let me just type this, Slow Walk to.
- 35:52Speaker 2: Sounds like a 70s singer-songwriter album. Yeah, exactly.
- 35:57Speaker 1: No, totally, totally.
- 35:58Speaker 2: A little acoustic guitar going.
- 36:01Speaker 1: Slow Walking, I'm mangling this. Anyway, I just did a
- 36:05Speaker 1: quick search for it. it's i'm not seeing it come
- 36:08Speaker 1: up so it.
- 36:09Speaker 2: Doesn't exist it's you are totally.
- 36:15Speaker 1: Making this entire story is like hallucination and lies um.
- 36:20Speaker 2: That's not the first time you've run into.
- 36:22Speaker 1: That right right anyway it's kind of like a it's
- 36:25Speaker 1: it's got james brolin it's it's really really cool it's
- 36:30Speaker 1: very 70s But I guess it was during the disaster
- 36:34Speaker 1: movie cycle. So they kind of like did one for
- 36:37Speaker 1: the TV movie of the week.
- 36:39Speaker 2: You know, I think they tried a few of those
- 36:41Speaker 2: over the years.
- 36:42Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 36:42Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 36:43Speaker 1: But you're kind of amazed by because now when I
- 36:45Speaker 1: think TV movie. Well, now that I think TV movie,
- 36:48Speaker 1: that's every movie. But yeah, pretty much. But when you
- 36:51Speaker 1: think TV movie, you're thinking like, you know, Hallmark type style.
- 36:54Speaker 2: I was going to say, I got to one of
- 36:57Speaker 2: those lately.
- 36:58Speaker 3: So let's not go down that road to tell you
- 37:01Speaker 3: about that.
- 37:02Speaker 1: Now, please do. Please do. Because I'll just say that
- 37:04Speaker 1: this slow walk to sunset or sunlight or whatever it
- 37:07Speaker 1: was called. We found it. It was amazing and very
- 37:11Speaker 1: seventies and very well produced. And it's only like 67
- 37:15Speaker 1: minutes long. So anyway, tell me about.
- 37:18Speaker 3: Your, well, first my question is which disaster are they
- 37:22Speaker 3: leaning into or what selection of multiple disasters?
- 37:25Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 37:25Speaker 1: Well, okay. So it's an earthquake movie.
- 37:27Speaker 2: Nice. All right.
- 37:29Speaker 1: So they're on the subway and there's a big earthquake
- 37:32Speaker 1: and everything goes off the tracks. So they, to, to,
- 37:38Speaker 1: to justify the low budget of the movie. Cause there's
- 37:42Speaker 1: only about seven people on the train. All right. They're
- 37:45Speaker 1: saying this is Sunday morning under wall street. And so
- 37:50Speaker 1: there's not a lot of people out.
- 37:51Speaker 8: All right.
- 37:52Speaker 2: So anyway, just as a mutant creatures that live in
- 37:55Speaker 2: the sewer, right?
- 37:56Speaker 1: Oh man, mutant creatures. No, it's, it's pure survival. It's
- 38:01Speaker 1: it's the train goes off the track. And then James
- 38:04Speaker 1: Brolin is like an off duty cop, you know, beat cop.
- 38:07Speaker 1: who has to like walk every, get everybody to safety,
- 38:12Speaker 1: you know? And, and it's got, you know, like a
- 38:15Speaker 1: cool dialogue from the, from the air, you know? And
- 38:18Speaker 1: it's really interesting to see like how race relations were
- 38:21Speaker 1: portrayed in the movie and, and in like the, the
- 38:26Speaker 1: view of crime, like the lady says, Oh, I've got
- 38:28Speaker 1: this whistle. So if anybody tries to attack us on
- 38:30Speaker 1: the subway, I'll just blow this whistle.
- 38:32Speaker 3: And, That was a thing back in the day.
- 38:35Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 38:36Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 38:36Speaker 1: I'm going like, wow.
- 38:37Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 38:37Speaker 1: So it was a cool, like little time capsule, but
- 38:39Speaker 1: it does have like this real mood. And there's like these, uh,
- 38:43Speaker 1: Matt painting shots of like, uh, a collapsed, uh, subway,
- 38:48Speaker 1: you know, that are really well done. And then the
- 38:51Speaker 1: movies just kind of got like this open ending, uh,
- 38:55Speaker 1: nebulous ending to it. That that's a little, little, uh,
- 38:59Speaker 1: adventurous for a TV movie. Uh, so yeah, They used.
- 39:03Speaker 2: To do that kind of stuff.
- 39:04Speaker 3: Now I feel like they don't ever pull that weird
- 39:07Speaker 3: swinging for the fences finale on some of these weird things.
- 39:11Speaker 1: No, no. This was actually like... I mean, it was
- 39:13Speaker 1: the era of Duel, so I think they were actually
- 39:16Speaker 1: trying at the time to make good things. But yeah,
- 39:22Speaker 1: I don't know. It's a high recommendation. It's only 67 minutes,
- 39:26Speaker 1: so you can get it back to your life.
- 39:28Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 39:30Speaker 1: Know, that appeals to you, but, but no, tell me
- 39:34Speaker 1: about your TV movie.
- 39:36Speaker 2: First off, this occurred.
- 39:38Speaker 3: Well, again, we're, we're sidetracked among sidetracks, but this occurred
- 39:41Speaker 3: to me lately as there were rerunning the car and
- 39:44Speaker 3: I'm watching James Brolin. And I'm like, you know, as
- 39:48Speaker 3: big as he ever was, do you think he's bitter
- 39:51Speaker 3: that his son is a bigger star?
- 39:53Speaker 2: Cause now when people think Roland, they're going to think
- 39:56Speaker 2: of his son.
- 39:57Speaker 5: Right.
- 39:57Speaker 2: And I was like, he's just, yeah. Yeah.
- 40:00Speaker 1: He kind of got eclipsed. You know, he never got
- 40:02Speaker 1: that a list, a list, a list, you know.
- 40:05Speaker 3: Josh started off as a kid actor and then like,
- 40:08Speaker 3: he grew up and then became like a legitimately good actor.
- 40:11Speaker 3: And then like, so they started putting them in stuff.
- 40:14Speaker 3: And then of course he gets in his tent pole releases,
- 40:16Speaker 3: but like, He just became a bigger star. And yeah,
- 40:19Speaker 3: so kind of overtook.
- 40:21Speaker 2: The Brolin name.
- 40:22Speaker 3: And do you think, you know, as proud of his
- 40:25Speaker 3: son as he must be, to some extent, he's still
- 40:27Speaker 3: an actor.
- 40:28Speaker 2: He's still got a little ego. He's got to be like, dude,
- 40:31Speaker 2: what are you doing?
- 40:33Speaker 1: Right.
- 40:33Speaker 3: I should have totally like Estevez as you and give
- 40:36Speaker 3: you a different name so you could go be popular
- 40:38Speaker 3: with some, you know, use your mom's name or something.
- 40:40Speaker 2: Leave me out of this.
- 40:41Speaker 1: That's right. That's right. Yeah, totally. You're totally diluting my brand, son.
- 40:46Speaker 3: I put out very important pieces of work, like the car,
- 40:51Speaker 3: that thing where I was stuck in a sewer somewhere.
- 40:54Speaker 1: And my cameo in Pee Wee's Big Adventure.
- 40:57Speaker 2: Which is maybe the pinnacle of his career.
- 41:00Speaker 3: Like, I don't know if you can get a better
- 41:02Speaker 3: moment than that.
- 41:05Speaker 2: I guess we shouldn't get lost down the Pee Wee Road.
- 41:09Speaker 1: Right, or the James Brolin Road.
- 41:11Speaker 2: Well, there's only so far you can go with the
- 41:13Speaker 2: James Brolin. Pee Wee is a whole other plateau.
- 41:16Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, hold Pee Wee Herman. James Brolin in Amityville
- 41:21Speaker 1: Heart looking into the fire and going, I'm coming apart!
- 41:25Speaker 1: Great stuff. And I've never seen the movie, but the
- 41:30Speaker 1: poster to Night of the Jugular where it's like a
- 41:36Speaker 1: newspaper being ripped open as crazy looking James Brolin. I
- 41:39Speaker 1: might get the, I might have the wrong title again,
- 41:42Speaker 1: but he's like ripping through. He's got to hold a knife.
- 41:44Speaker 1: It looks like a crazy 1970s, big beard, crazy hair,
- 41:48Speaker 1: James Brolin at that. that to me looks like the
- 41:50Speaker 1: greatest movie ever made, but.
- 41:52Speaker 2: I haven't seen it.
- 41:53Speaker 3: Again, as someone who used to make most of their
- 41:55Speaker 3: decisions based on the video box.
- 41:57Speaker 1: Art, you know, absolutely.
- 41:59Speaker 3: Old school one sheets are amazing. And I would, I
- 42:02Speaker 3: would fall for that anytime, but absolutely.
- 42:04Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 42:05Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 42:05Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 42:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 42:06Speaker 1: No, like, uh, we're one of the dumb groups. I
- 42:10Speaker 1: like thing are just newspaper ads from, uh, movie, uh,
- 42:15Speaker 1: newspaper ads for movies from, you know, all these different decades.
- 42:18Speaker 2: Oh yeah.
- 42:18Speaker 1: Like, That really was like a big deal. People really
- 42:22Speaker 1: don't know. Or for me, it was a big deal
- 42:24Speaker 1: looking through the movie section and seeing the artwork.
- 42:27Speaker 2: I mean, that was even gone by the 90s because
- 42:29Speaker 2: I remember.
- 42:30Speaker 3: Being in the video store looking at the video box
- 42:32Speaker 3: art for the newer stuff that was coming out when
- 42:35Speaker 3: it just became the heads Photoshopped next to each other.
- 42:39Speaker 2: And I was like, this is horrible. Like, why do
- 42:41Speaker 2: they keep doing this? And like, everybody hated them, but
- 42:45Speaker 2: I guess it was just quick and easy. So they
- 42:47Speaker 2: just stuck with it because... At least 50% of the time,
- 42:50Speaker 2: that's what they did. They'd redo, even if it had
- 42:53Speaker 2: a good one sheet, originally, they would redo it and
- 42:55Speaker 2: just throw some floating heads on the front of a
- 42:57Speaker 2: VHS box and be like, here you go, buy this.
- 43:00Speaker 2: It was so infuriating.
- 43:02Speaker 1: Oh, no, no, totally, totally. And that's why buying physical
- 43:06Speaker 1: media now, I think they're mainly... appealing to the hardcore
- 43:09Speaker 1: movie nerds so the artwork is so much better and
- 43:12Speaker 1: if you don't like the artwork and a lot this
- 43:14Speaker 1: one company you can flip the flip the sleeve and
- 43:17Speaker 1: get the actual poster.
- 43:18Speaker 3: I think a couple of them started doing that giving
- 43:20Speaker 3: you alternate versions i'm like that's pretty.
- 43:23Speaker 1: Fun yeah you've you've heard the uh the collective cry
- 43:27Speaker 1: of horror.
- 43:28Speaker 3: Well, the only geeks that are still buying physical media,
- 43:31Speaker 3: you got them at least give them some physical things
- 43:34Speaker 3: to play with.
- 43:35Speaker 2: So absolutely.
- 43:36Speaker 3: Give us toys and an extra alternative box art, you know,
- 43:40Speaker 3: something like that.
- 43:41Speaker 1: Something like that.
- 43:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 43:42Speaker 1: They, You're talking about movies that give away prices. My
- 43:45Speaker 1: last trip to Walmart, I found Edward Scissorhands and Ed
- 43:50Speaker 1: Wood on Blue for five bucks. And I was going like,
- 43:53Speaker 1: holy cow.
- 43:54Speaker 2: Like a two-pack version?
- 43:56Speaker 1: Nope, nope. Separate.
- 43:57Speaker 2: Individuals, okay.
- 43:58Speaker 1: No, okay. Five bucks for Ed. Five bucks for Ed.
- 44:02Speaker 2: Okay.
- 44:02Speaker 1: I've never made that connection before.
- 44:03Speaker 2: Wait a minute.
- 44:04Speaker 1: Wait a minute. He needs one more Ed movie, so
- 44:07Speaker 1: he can have a trilogy.
- 44:08Speaker 3: Anyway.
- 44:09Speaker 2: I'm sure he can piece that together.
- 44:18Speaker 1: The Ed Gorey story. I mean, come on. It's like,
- 44:21Speaker 1: you know, he makes a biopic about Edward Gorey. I mean,
- 44:24Speaker 1: that's money in the bank.
- 44:25Speaker 2: A little more fun than the Ed Gein one that
- 44:27Speaker 2: I was going with.
- 44:29Speaker 1: Oh my God, Tim Burton's Ed Gein would be the
- 44:33Speaker 1: greatest movie ever. Speaking about weird familial relationships. I wanted
- 44:38Speaker 1: to bring this up. I'm sorry if I'm, this is okay.
- 44:43Speaker 1: So Ed says her hands bought it, viewed it last night,
- 44:48Speaker 1: tried to get my 11 year old to watch it
- 44:50Speaker 1: with me. I thought this, she likes all that lemony
- 44:53Speaker 1: stick at stuff. She likes all that Coraline stuff. I'm
- 44:56Speaker 1: going like, you know, this.
- 44:58Speaker 3: Is how you won yourself back over to watching stuff
- 45:01Speaker 3: because I have another generation to be like, Let's see
- 45:04Speaker 3: what they think of this.
- 45:06Speaker 1: I keep trying.
- 45:06Speaker 3: That and the nieces and nephews are just like, get
- 45:10Speaker 3: away from us. We have things to do. They just
- 45:13Speaker 3: don't even entertain the ideas of hanging out and watching
- 45:16Speaker 3: a movie.
- 45:17Speaker 2: I'm like, fine, whatever.
- 45:19Speaker 3: It's just me sitting here by myself forcing a dog
- 45:22Speaker 3: to watch movies.
- 45:23Speaker 2: It's sad, really.
- 45:25Speaker 1: It's very hit and miss. They would rather... My kids
- 45:31Speaker 1: would much rather watch a six hour reaction video to
- 45:34Speaker 1: an anime series. My 11 year old is watching reaction
- 45:39Speaker 1: videos of anime series, but the reaction is not people.
- 45:43Speaker 1: There are these little cartoon anime people that don't move.
- 45:48Speaker 1: And then their little text messages pop up and they're
- 45:52Speaker 1: standing around a little screen and they're watching. I'm going like,
- 45:56Speaker 1: I don't understand culture. I don't understand how you're watching this.
- 46:00Speaker 3: I wish you were making that up, but I know
- 46:02Speaker 3: of the things I've seen, they're equally that dumb.
- 46:05Speaker 2: So I'm just like, I, I know that you're not.
- 46:08Speaker 2: And that's the sad.
- 46:10Speaker 1: Part. It's like gotten so many, so many layers removed
- 46:14Speaker 1: from the actual experience. It's not about the, you know,
- 46:18Speaker 1: I mean, I get it. Sometimes I'll, I'll listen to
- 46:20Speaker 1: a podcast or watch a review. Cause I don't really,
- 46:23Speaker 1: I'm on the fence about the movie. So I'll just,
- 46:25Speaker 1: I'll kind of get the gist of it from the thing.
- 46:27Speaker 1: You know, if I have any interest in seeing it,
- 46:29Speaker 1: I'll watch it before I do that. But anyway, so
- 46:33Speaker 1: Edward Scissorhands tried to get her to watch it. She
- 46:35Speaker 1: got about halfway. Now, this is the problem is sometimes
- 46:41Speaker 1: you go back and revisit things. They don't hold up.
- 46:44Speaker 1: And but what I was having a good time with
- 46:47Speaker 1: this movie until she basically ruined it for me forever.
- 46:51Speaker 3: Oh, God.
- 46:52Speaker 1: Where she said, Dad. I didn't know this was... I
- 46:56Speaker 1: thought this was going to be a horror movie, A,
- 46:58Speaker 1: because you didn't prep me for what kind of.
- 46:59Speaker 2: Movie this is. I thought this was going to be about...
- 47:01Speaker 2: It's a fairy tale. What are you talking about?
- 47:02Speaker 3: Right.
- 47:03Speaker 1: I thought this was going to be about a guy
- 47:04Speaker 1: with scissor hands cutting people up and everything.
- 47:06Speaker 2: That's Nightmare on Elm Street.
- 47:07Speaker 1: We already have that. We can get to that one.
- 47:12Speaker 1: But this movie is a love story.
- 47:15Speaker 2: Now.
- 47:17Speaker 1: Dad. So this movie is a love story about a.
- 47:20Speaker 2: Dad.
- 47:21Speaker 3: Dad.
- 47:21Speaker 2: Dad. Dad.
- 47:23Speaker 1: This movie is... this movie is about a guy falling
- 47:27Speaker 1: in love with his sister. Is that what this is about?
- 47:30Speaker 1: And I'm going like, well, no, no, just living together.
- 47:34Speaker 1: And well, she goes like, so they adopted him. And
- 47:37Speaker 1: now he's like creeping on his sister. And I'm like, well,
- 47:40Speaker 1: I don't know if it's an official adoption. Well, I
- 47:43Speaker 1: am going like, Don't say that stuff. Don't talk about that.
- 47:49Speaker 2: Stop thinking things. I didn't tell you it was okay
- 47:52Speaker 2: to think.
- 47:53Speaker 1: And wait a minute. And dad, she's like 16 or 17.
- 47:56Speaker 1: And how old is Ed? I mean, he looks maybe 30,
- 48:00Speaker 1: but you know, he's been up in that castle for
- 48:02Speaker 1: how long? So, I mean, really he could be like,
- 48:05Speaker 1: you know, 80 years old and he's okay.
- 48:09Speaker 3: To creep on a young girl if she's a cheerleader
- 48:12Speaker 3: right I mean as long as you put her in.
- 48:15Speaker 2: A cheerleader outfit it makes it.
- 48:17Speaker 3: Fine socially acceptable I mean that was kind of the
- 48:22Speaker 3: whole reason for Edward Scissorhands I think there was an
- 48:25Speaker 3: interview well I mean not to put words in Tim
- 48:30Speaker 3: Burton's mouth but like there's an interview with him at
- 48:33Speaker 3: the time they're shooting it And I guess coming off
- 48:36Speaker 3: of Beetlejuice and knowing what a creepy gothy kind of
- 48:40Speaker 3: girl that Winona was as a kid. He's like, there's
- 48:44Speaker 3: this quote of him just going, I really just wanted
- 48:46Speaker 3: to see her in a cheerleader outfit.
- 48:47Speaker 2: Oh, God.
- 48:48Speaker 1: And I was like, come on, Timmy.
- 48:51Speaker 2: I was like, yes, you can think that, but don't
- 48:53Speaker 2: say it out loud.
- 48:55Speaker 1: Yeah. So, yeah, he's a weirdo, but he's a weird
- 48:58Speaker 1: old guy.
- 48:58Speaker 2: He's still a guy. You know, he's still a guy.
- 49:03Speaker 3: I forgave him of that. Although to me, it's the
- 49:06Speaker 3: blonde hair that throws me off.
- 49:07Speaker 2: Like, yes, I agree.
- 49:08Speaker 3: Her and the cheerleader outfit's going to be adorable, but like,
- 49:11Speaker 3: I'm so not used to that blonde hair.
- 49:12Speaker 2: Like, yeah, at the time. And even now I'm just like, no, no,
- 49:16Speaker 2: that doesn't, no, that doesn't work.
- 49:17Speaker 1: Like yeah it's it's it's weird it's weird to see
- 49:20Speaker 1: her as a blonde yeah but but uh yeah that's
- 49:23Speaker 1: so funny though even tim burton has a little bit
- 49:26Speaker 1: of a vin diesel in him.
- 49:28Speaker 3: Oh god don't ruin tim burton for me I still
- 49:33Speaker 3: appreciate him as the weird old dude that he is.
- 49:36Speaker 1: I love Tim Burton movies. I mean, not all of them.
- 49:40Speaker 2: I used to at that time love Tim Burton movies.
- 49:43Speaker 2: And I've come back around. He's redeeming himself these days.
- 49:46Speaker 2: It's cool.
- 49:47Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. No, he's cool.
- 49:48Speaker 2: He's cool.
- 49:49Speaker 1: I mean, but watching the movie, it is... I was
- 49:53Speaker 1: going like, you know, some of the things... I guess
- 49:59Speaker 1: once you've seen a movie a lot, you know, it's
- 50:00Speaker 1: like some of the things that you thought were subtext
- 50:02Speaker 1: or actually blatant text. Like, you know, it's kind of like, oh,
- 50:07Speaker 1: the artist who can't really join in with society, but
- 50:10Speaker 1: people enjoy the things that this artist makes, you know,
- 50:13Speaker 1: like the snow and, you know, destined to always be
- 50:16Speaker 1: an outsider. And I'm going like, all right. It's very... It's.
- 50:22Speaker 3: Not subtle, but at the same time, it works because
- 50:25Speaker 3: you and I were both those weirdo.
- 50:27Speaker 1: Kids that were like, finally, somebody gets me. In love
- 50:31Speaker 1: with our sisters, right.
- 50:32Speaker 2: I mean....
- 50:35Speaker 3: I like mine now, but not in that way.
- 50:40Speaker 2: I get along with them.
- 50:42Speaker 1: Right, right. So I'm going like... So there's Clueless, which
- 50:45Speaker 1: at least addresses it, but... You know, but then there's
- 50:48Speaker 1: like this one and I'm going like, yeah, well, thanks.
- 50:51Speaker 1: You've kind of ruined Scissorhands for me. I know it's
- 50:54Speaker 1: not there. He's officially adopted, but I'm having trouble explaining.
- 50:58Speaker 2: I mean, he just was hanging out there for a while.
- 51:00Speaker 1: He was just really hanging out there.
- 51:02Speaker 3: I mean, it hadn't even been that long, so it's
- 51:04Speaker 3: not like it was... It'd be different if they grew
- 51:06Speaker 3: up together. Then you kind of become family, but if
- 51:10Speaker 3: somebody comes over to your house, you're not immediately family.
- 51:12Speaker 3: You've got to be immersed in there for a couple
- 51:16Speaker 3: of years at least, you know? So he's just a
- 51:19Speaker 3: visiting weird dude that he may or may not hook
- 51:22Speaker 3: up with.
- 51:22Speaker 1: You know, he's a house guest and they do fall
- 51:25Speaker 1: in love pretty quick. I mean, there's just something, some
- 51:28Speaker 1: stuff going on.
- 51:30Speaker 2: At the time in that version of him.
- 51:33Speaker 3: Now later I'd be like, Oh God, Johnny Depp, get away.
- 51:36Speaker 3: But at the time you were like, okay, we all
- 51:38Speaker 3: can see.
- 51:40Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 51:41Speaker 1: Yeah. The movie has the kind of the thing where
- 51:43Speaker 1: like the weird outsider comes to like a boring town
- 51:47Speaker 1: and like, gets everybody jazzed up and, you know, into.
- 51:51Speaker 3: Like, I will also say this occurred to me even
- 51:54Speaker 3: at the time a million years ago when I first
- 51:56Speaker 3: watched this movie.
- 51:58Speaker 2: And at the time I love Tim Burton. I love
- 52:00Speaker 2: Vincent price.
- 52:01Speaker 3: These are all amazing things, but I have to like,
- 52:04Speaker 3: even at the time I'm watching it going.
- 52:06Speaker 2: All right. So we're looking at the flip book here.
- 52:08Speaker 3: It's like messed up, you know, basic idea for a person, uh,
- 52:14Speaker 3: final version, he's all pretty and cool. Why is the
- 52:17Speaker 3: middle step adding scissors to his hands?
- 52:20Speaker 2: I'm like, don't get me wrong. I understand that's the
- 52:24Speaker 2: whole push of this movie.
- 52:26Speaker 1: That's the gimmick.
- 52:27Speaker 3: That's the reason that he's a misfit. And that's the
- 52:29Speaker 3: reason we love him is because he's a misfit.
- 52:31Speaker 2: But logically, is that a good idea? Right.
- 52:35Speaker 1: Is that a good idea to put razor sharp scissors
- 52:38Speaker 1: unwieldy talons on the end of your I mean I
- 52:42Speaker 1: get the metaphor at the end you were going to.
- 52:43Speaker 3: Give him real hands so we couldn't have found a
- 52:46Speaker 3: better like how about nerf hands you know nerf.
- 52:50Speaker 2: Hands are way less dangerous and then.
- 52:52Speaker 3: You can still replace them with good hands like you
- 52:54Speaker 3: wanted to so it just seems like a bad.
- 52:57Speaker 1: Move in the middle there He was obviously on his
- 53:00Speaker 1: own trip because, I mean, the man made the most
- 53:03Speaker 1: complicated cookie maker on the planet. I mean, those were
- 53:07Speaker 1: like sugar cookies. You know, he had like the wall
- 53:11Speaker 1: of industry to create the machine.
- 53:14Speaker 2: That makes your cookies.
- 53:17Speaker 1: I mean, what did what did. he do to become
- 53:20Speaker 1: like so independently wealthy that he could live in a
- 53:22Speaker 1: castle Dracula over suburbs, you know? So he must've had
- 53:25Speaker 1: a power ball.
- 53:26Speaker 2: I'm going to say power ball. Cause that's my plan
- 53:29Speaker 2: when I win. I am so building a castle.
- 53:32Speaker 1: Oh, okay.
- 53:33Speaker 2: And I am going to be that weird dude.
- 53:35Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 53:36Speaker 2: The whole town will be like, Oh God.
- 53:38Speaker 1: Oh God.
- 53:39Speaker 2: Uh, we get rid of him, but he's got too
- 53:41Speaker 2: much money. We can't do it. He won't go away.
- 53:44Speaker 2: So I totally am aiming for that. That's my plan.
- 53:48Speaker 1: Oh yeah, definitely. Definitely.
- 53:49Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 53:49Speaker 1: So anyway, he says like, finally I can get to
- 53:51Speaker 1: these inventions that I'm working on and you know, he's
- 53:53Speaker 1: not a bad inventor. He did create life or a
- 53:56Speaker 1: mechanical man that has a heart and soul. But yeah,
- 53:59Speaker 1: it's just like he's got little quirky idiosyncrasies where he's
- 54:03Speaker 1: got to put giant... Okay, if you're going to use
- 54:05Speaker 1: scissor hands, I mean, use safety scissors or something like that.
- 54:08Speaker 2: Yeah, get those kindergarten special ones so at least, you know, you're.
- 54:11Speaker 1: Not poking eyes out and shit. Yeah. Yeah. And them
- 54:15Speaker 1: putting him on the waterbed, bad on them. What did
- 54:18Speaker 1: they think was going to happen?
- 54:19Speaker 2: That is.
- 54:19Speaker 1: Yeah. That is not Ed's fault, okay?
- 54:24Speaker 3: If Arkin wasn't such a joy to behold, that is
- 54:28Speaker 3: maybe his finest performance. And he's in a lot of
- 54:30Speaker 3: good stuff. But him in that movie, he's the most
- 54:34Speaker 3: lovable character ever.
- 54:36Speaker 1: Dude, just make sort of the movie. And just the
- 54:42Speaker 1: right seasoning that that movie needed was that kind of
- 54:45Speaker 1: like uber dad, that every dad stereotype blurred together and
- 54:50Speaker 1: just Alan Arkin perfectly cast And it makes you, with
- 54:54Speaker 1: his death, I mean, it makes you want to just
- 54:56Speaker 1: go back and discover the things that you missed, the
- 55:01Speaker 1: movies that he was in that you maybe never saw,
- 55:03Speaker 1: you know?
- 55:05Speaker 2: Definitely.
- 55:05Speaker 1: Dead people... Yeah, so Pee Wee Herman, I'm just glad
- 55:11Speaker 1: they've not mentioned the movie theater incident and all the eulogies.
- 55:17Speaker 3: They brought, well, a few of them, because even on
- 55:20Speaker 3: the news here, they were just like, sometimes known equally
- 55:24Speaker 3: as much for his bad decisions as his show business.
- 55:28Speaker 2: I was just like, I don't know about as well.
- 55:31Speaker 3: I feel like people know Pee Wee for Pee Wee
- 55:34Speaker 3: even more. granted he is a figure with some problems
- 55:38Speaker 3: over the years, but you know, so luckily, but, but
- 55:42Speaker 3: that's the, I was kind of waiting to get into
- 55:44Speaker 3: more fights with people because I brought up on a
- 55:47Speaker 3: recent episode, somebody brought him up in, in negative terms
- 55:50Speaker 3: and I.
- 55:51Speaker 2: Was ready to throw down.
- 55:52Speaker 3: Right.
- 55:52Speaker 7: Right.
- 55:53Speaker 2: And then that's before I.
- 55:54Speaker 3: Knew there was even another charge in the middle there
- 55:56Speaker 3: that I won't get into, but also seems doctored up.
- 56:00Speaker 3: So I don't know, like, everything seems blown out of
- 56:02Speaker 3: proportion or I kind of wonder if people were just
- 56:05Speaker 3: gunning for him because a, he became successful and became
- 56:09Speaker 3: successful sort of related to kids.
- 56:13Speaker 2: But like, not really. I was like, he was never
- 56:15Speaker 2: for kids.
- 56:16Speaker 3: Like they gave him a kid show, even though, you know,
- 56:19Speaker 3: he started in Cheech and Chong movies and like doing
- 56:22Speaker 3: an adult standup show. And like, none of these things
- 56:25Speaker 3: were even Tim Burton's movie is.
- 56:27Speaker 2: Weird and screwed up and dark.
- 56:29Speaker 1: And like, right.
- 56:29Speaker 3: So no, Never did he ask to be a kid's hero,
- 56:34Speaker 3: but they handed it to him.
- 56:35Speaker 2: What are you going to say?
- 56:36Speaker 1: No, right. Kids responded to him though. In the beginning,
- 56:41Speaker 1: it's kind of like he, it was a parody of
- 56:43Speaker 1: a kid. Yeah.
- 56:44Speaker 3: He's making fun of that kind of persona in a way,
- 56:47Speaker 3: but then when they, you know, when you wrap it
- 56:50Speaker 3: up and hand it to him and be like, here's
- 56:52Speaker 3: a whole lot of money.
- 56:52Speaker 2: And freedom to do whatever you want. What are you
- 56:54Speaker 2: going to not do that?
- 56:55Speaker 1: Hell, are you kidding? Are you kidding?
- 56:57Speaker 3: And he did such great stuff because he did like,
- 57:00Speaker 3: He brought in cartoons and animation and stop motion and like.
- 57:04Speaker 2: All this other stuff into this world.
- 57:06Speaker 3: And like it worked on some level that they weren't
- 57:10Speaker 3: prepared for. He probably wasn't prepared for it. So, yeah,
- 57:13Speaker 3: it was amazing how it just sort of gelled into
- 57:16Speaker 3: this own peewee land that like kids responded to. And
- 57:21Speaker 3: as they grew up, they continued to much like the
- 57:24Speaker 3: Edward Scissorhands thing. all i've seen on my feed this
- 57:27Speaker 3: last week and a half or more it's just every
- 57:31Speaker 3: day and like it doesn't stop there's still people throwing
- 57:33Speaker 3: out tributes and every one of them starts off.
- 57:35Speaker 2: Like look i was a weird kid.
- 57:38Speaker 3: Yeah and i you know i have nobody seemed to
- 57:40Speaker 3: get me and i felt like i was alone and
- 57:42Speaker 3: i first saw peewee and things kicked in and i
- 57:45Speaker 3: was like he's a weirdo and i'm a weirdo and
- 57:48Speaker 3: like i feel like we've got a a bond. And like,
- 57:51Speaker 3: I feel like there's other people out there, so I'm
- 57:53Speaker 3: not alone.
- 57:53Speaker 2: So it's like, it is that same thing of like just.
- 57:56Speaker 3: Being kind of a weirdo and then finding out, you know,
- 57:59Speaker 3: there's more to that. And there's other people out there
- 58:02Speaker 3: that are like you. And I don't know, that's so
- 58:05Speaker 3: much of what I've seen lately in the tributes. And
- 58:08Speaker 3: that's the part you have to kind of like be
- 58:11Speaker 3: amazed by how much people like we're, we're, taken with
- 58:14Speaker 3: him for that same reason of like, he's just not
- 58:17Speaker 3: a normal dude.
- 58:18Speaker 2: And that's what we love about him.
- 58:20Speaker 1: You know, I agree. I agree. I, I, I will admit,
- 58:23Speaker 1: I appreciate him more as an adult than I did
- 58:27Speaker 1: as a kid. I did find, um, the persona, uh,
- 58:31Speaker 1: don't throw down. Uh, I found him like a little
- 58:33Speaker 1: grading as a kid.
- 58:35Speaker 2: Well, again, it became sort of a one note thing.
- 58:38Speaker 2: It's like, here's my kid persona. And then like, once again,
- 58:42Speaker 2: it worked perfect in that movie.
- 58:44Speaker 3: Like it was meant, it was meant to be in
- 58:46Speaker 3: its full realization in Huey's big adventure.
- 58:49Speaker 2: And it works like throughout that movie. It's still solid.
- 58:52Speaker 4: It's fun.
- 58:53Speaker 2: It's goofy. But then you're like, okay, now we're going
- 58:55Speaker 2: to give you seasons of a television show. And you're like, but,
- 58:59Speaker 2: That's all he does.
- 59:00Speaker 1: Right, right, right.
- 59:01Speaker 3: So he had to come up with other stuff to
- 59:03Speaker 3: throw in the show because it's like, all I do
- 59:06Speaker 3: is this goofy voice and laugh and act like a goofball.
- 59:09Speaker 3: But like, you know, there's only so much you can
- 59:12Speaker 3: do with that.
- 59:13Speaker 2: So, yeah, I agree. Like, again, I think he works
- 59:15Speaker 2: better as a weird, you know, offshoot thing.
- 59:19Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 59:19Speaker 2: But, you know, what worked on the TV worked. Yeah.
- 59:22Speaker 3: But it was usually built around the Peewee character, not
- 59:25Speaker 3: because of the Peewee character.
- 59:26Speaker 2: Right.
- 59:27Speaker 1: Well, and it is a singular, I will say, even
- 59:30Speaker 1: if I found a grading as a kid, it is
- 59:32Speaker 1: a very singular, as you're saying, universe as a singular universe,
- 59:36Speaker 1: kind of like a distillation and amplification of kid television shows.
- 59:41Speaker 1: So it's kind of a parody while also being a
- 59:44Speaker 1: real thing. And it's got, I guess what you would say,
- 59:48Speaker 1: he's a weirdo, but he's got taste. I mean, that
- 59:51Speaker 1: was always true.
- 59:53Speaker 2: Again, the things that he brought in were so cool.
- 59:56Speaker 3: And we, as those little kids at the time, and
- 59:58Speaker 3: even younger, were just like, oh, this is the kind
- 1:00:01Speaker 3: of stuff that I like.
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: I do like this animation. I do like this music
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: he's playing.
- 1:00:06Speaker 3: All this other stuff he brought in was probably his
- 1:00:09Speaker 3: personal taste. And these were the more refined things he
- 1:00:12Speaker 3: could add to the show. Meanwhile, he still had to
- 1:00:15Speaker 3: do the goofy voice and wear the outfit.
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: So it's like, I think he liked.
- 1:00:19Speaker 3: the other aspects he brought to the show more than
- 1:00:22Speaker 3: his own PB character.
- 1:00:23Speaker 2: Probably as time.
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: I would imagine. I would imagine. Yeah.
- 1:00:26Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: I mean, it was, it was his access to give
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: him the power to be able to make something that
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: was uniquely him. And, and so, yes, about being a
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: weird spastic kid, you know, who, but who is, who
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: is okay with themselves and not feeling like they're inferior
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: and almost like going like, Hey, you don't get me.
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: That's your problem is very empowering for a kid when,
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: and I'm thinking about the other role models that we
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: had and not saying Beware was a role model, but
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: I mean.
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: He was kind of like in a way saying like,
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: it's okay.
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: Don't apologize.
- 1:01:05Speaker 3: All these kids were attracted to his little world and
- 1:01:08Speaker 3: like the things that he brought into it, they responded to.
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: So it's like, whether or not he personally was a
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: role model, but like the things that he opened.
- 1:01:17Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:01:17Speaker 3: The things he opened their eyes to were like things
- 1:01:20Speaker 3: that brought them together and made them sort of the
- 1:01:22Speaker 3: culture that they became moving forward.
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:01:25Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: If, I mean, if you weren't like, because I'm thinking
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: like the other eighties icons kind of like, like Rambo
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: or GI Joe or Arnold Schwarzenegger or something where you
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: just go like, I know, I've been to PE class.
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: I'm never going to be Arnold Schwarzenegger. I'm never going
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: to be Sylvester Stallone. These are like the worst parts
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: of my day. And, you know, I don't know. I
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: don't have sports stars that I admire. But there's this
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: weird guy.
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: I can be like that peewee.
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: But I'm kind of, you know, Spaz is kind of
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: like a pet name of mine.
- 1:02:01Speaker 2: That is my brand. I can be as fast, don't
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: you worry.
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: Dude, without even trying, all right? So.
- 1:02:12Speaker 2: I just need a suit, is what you're telling me.
- 1:02:15Speaker 2: I am almost a star.
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: That's all I need, right? Yeah, yeah, so I get it.
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: I mean, I get it, you know? And so, yeah, so,
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: you know, but... very talented.
- 1:02:27Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: A lot of people who are sensitive and weird and
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: talented make bad decisions. I mean, everybody makes bad decisions.
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: It's just a shame when you're a celebrity, every bad
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: decision you make is amplified on the front page of
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: the news. And people love to tear that tear into that,
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: but you know, We all have things that we don't
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: want on the front page of the news. Leave Pee
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: Wee alone.
- 1:02:49Speaker 3: And I feel like, especially then, the theater incident, I'm like,
- 1:02:54Speaker 3: were they just gunning for him?
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: Because who else in that theater got arrested that day?
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: There was probably a senator.
- 1:03:00Speaker 3: I'm sure there's tons of weird dudes sitting there doing
- 1:03:03Speaker 3: the same thing.
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: That's what that place was for.
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: I mean, look, it was just a dark time. That's
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: the reason you went there.
- 1:03:10Speaker 3: I'm like, there's nothing wrong with the concept, more or less.
- 1:03:13Speaker 3: Just not necessarily in public. But to me, you're not
- 1:03:16Speaker 3: in public there. You're in a place.
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: People freak out because he was around kids. And I'm like,
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: not in there. If you brought your kids to the
- 1:03:23Speaker 2: adult theater, that's on you. You're a bad parent.
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: It's not like a Michael Jackson incident. It's just like
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: he was just another hominid trying to figure out. I'm
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: going to work in hominid several times here. He was
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: just another hominid. out there, you know, trying to get
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: through his day.
- 1:03:41Speaker 3: Again, whether it was a good decision, probably not.
- 1:03:47Speaker 2: But at the same time, who cares? He was just
- 1:03:50Speaker 2: a regular old dude.
- 1:03:52Speaker 3: Like every other weirdo in that theater, he should be
- 1:03:54Speaker 3: allowed to do what everybody else does.
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: But he wasn't because he.
- 1:03:57Speaker 3: Was a celebrity and they Somebody, I feel again, I
- 1:04:00Speaker 3: feel like you wronged somebody and they were just like, oh, oh, no,
- 1:04:03Speaker 3: I know.
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: I know your lifestyle. I got you.
- 1:04:05Speaker 3: I just got away for the right opportunity. So somebody
- 1:04:09Speaker 3: knew what they were doing.
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: We love we love. I mean, it's just, you know,
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: people in general, we love bringing them up and tearing
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: them down. It's fun. It's like you wouldn't want to
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: watch a movie. about like a biopic movie where there
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: wasn't the tear down fall apart. I mean, that's the,
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: and then the redemption.
- 1:04:26Speaker 3: You have to have the dark turn at the commercial
- 1:04:29Speaker 3: break on your VH1 behind the scenes.
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: Behind the music and then the dark times. Yes. We're
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: going to get to heroin. Okay. Everybody wants you to.
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: Get, hurry up and get to the cocaine problem. We're
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: getting there. Yeah, exactly. Exactly. So, you know, every, you
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: know it's it's just something it's drama it's human drama
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: we like to see these feudal lords fall from from
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: power you know and uh but so that happened to
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: him but he he rebounded give people have amnesia so
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: you know give it over people forget forgive whatever you know.
- 1:04:59Speaker 3: They definitely did as time went on with him i
- 1:05:02Speaker 3: i noticed like again almost nobody ever once in a
- 1:05:05Speaker 3: while somebody make a smart ass comment in the comment
- 1:05:08Speaker 3: section but right for the most part like it was
- 1:05:11Speaker 3: just such an outpouring of, you.
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: Know, admiration and love. And yeah.
- 1:05:16Speaker 3: But at the same time, I'm like thinking about him,
- 1:05:19Speaker 3: like getting just raked over the coals back in the day.
- 1:05:23Speaker 3: Think about how far back. That's why I said somebody
- 1:05:25Speaker 3: was gunning for him because you could get away with
- 1:05:27Speaker 3: just about anything back then. Like they're, Nobody was in
- 1:05:30Speaker 3: there with a cell phone taking videos. Like nobody was texting.
- 1:05:34Speaker 2: Hey, guess you just went in the portal.
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: Right. Right.
- 1:05:36Speaker 2: So think about what everybody has to go through now.
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: Right. Stupid media world.
- 1:05:41Speaker 2: We live in like, yeah. Can you imagine?
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: It's like the police state.
- 1:05:46Speaker 2: It's like, it really is.
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: You know, especially the celebrities, you know, I mean, I'm
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: not saying, oh, poor celebrities, you know, but I'm just
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: saying like, you know, it would suck. to like walk
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: out and have people videotaping you all day, you know,
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: every moment, every moment. When do you pick your nose?
- 1:06:03Speaker 2: You know, you just have to have a closet in
- 1:06:07Speaker 2: your house somewhere. Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: You kind of have to have a, uh, the altered
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: States chamber just so you can like.
- 1:06:15Speaker 3: I need a few moments to myself to do some
- 1:06:18Speaker 3: horrible things that need to be done.
- 1:06:21Speaker 2: Leave me alone.
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: Exactly. Exactly.
- 1:06:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: That happened to Fred Ward too. And you're going like
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: Fred Ward. Anyway, but whatever. I mean, that was the biggest, the, the,
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: the beloved Plaza theater here in Atlanta, you know, that
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: we walked by when you visited.
- 1:06:38Speaker 2: I remember it was very nice.
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. That was like a porn theater for like,
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: you know, 20 years or something. It's just, you know,
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: now we can, now they can show stuff, you know.
- 1:06:48Speaker 3: I mean that, that became what kept those theaters alive
- 1:06:52Speaker 3: for a long time.
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: Now, most of the ones here all closed down anyway,
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: but in their final days.
- 1:06:57Speaker 3: A lot of them became porn theaters because that was
- 1:07:00Speaker 3: the last. And that's why, like, again, we're putting it
- 1:07:03Speaker 3: in perspective of the time.
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: That's why people went there to do that. Cause you
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: couldn't do it at all. You, you weren't watching it
- 1:07:10Speaker 2: on V. Well, at that point, at least you could
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: watch it on VHS. Maybe if you could get ahold
- 1:07:13Speaker 2: of one, but even then.
- 1:07:14Speaker 3: It wasn't like simple and easy to do now. Within
- 1:07:18Speaker 3: 12 seconds, I can be watching porn right here as
- 1:07:21Speaker 3: I'm talking to you on the phone.
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: I'm not as far as you know. I'm not doing
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: that right. But it's just so simple that like.
- 1:07:31Speaker 3: You can be at your, on your phone at your
- 1:07:34Speaker 3: job and be like, huh, you know what?
- 1:07:36Speaker 2: I think I want to watch some porn right now.
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: And you do.
- 1:07:39Speaker 3: And like, it's just such a weird world that we
- 1:07:42Speaker 3: live in versus just 30 years ago.
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: Like nothing like that. Like totally different experience.
- 1:07:49Speaker 3: Just being alive was a totally different experience.
- 1:07:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: Just be a, you don't have to worry about police.
- 1:07:54Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: All right, buddy. Tell it to the judge. Nightstick.
- 1:08:01Speaker 2: They found my stash of Playboys. It's pretty much all
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: you had back then.
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: Right, right.
- 1:08:07Speaker 3: Now you have access to every evil the universe has
- 1:08:11Speaker 3: ever made.
- 1:08:12Speaker 2: Within moments, you can bring it up on your computer.
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: It's a different world. I'm just waiting for my kid
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: to come to me and say, Dad, I'm really into
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: amputee dwarves.
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: You know?
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: And you're like, ah, I'm like, why do you even
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: know about amputee dwarves?
- 1:08:27Speaker 2: Oh, you know, I found your videos.
- 1:08:30Speaker 3: I learned it from watching you.
- 1:08:34Speaker 2: You're not supposed to watch me.
- 1:08:35Speaker 3: I mean, you can borrow the videos if you want,
- 1:08:36Speaker 3: but wait till I leave the room.
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:08:41Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: So anyway, so, so yeah, so it's just such a weird,
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: different time, you know? And, uh, but anyway, Paul Rubens, uh,
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: he may, Rest in peace, Paul Rubens. He was a trailblazer.
- 1:08:56Speaker 3: I mean, yeah, and I i give him credit for
- 1:08:59Speaker 3: a comedian that did not conform right he found his
- 1:09:04Speaker 3: weird thing and went yep nope i'm gonna keep doing
- 1:09:07Speaker 3: my weird thing and like can't even when he changed
- 1:09:10Speaker 3: gears and did other stuff like yeah it was always
- 1:09:12Speaker 3: a weird different thing like it just yeah it was
- 1:09:16Speaker 3: what he did. And eventually sometimes the world would agree
- 1:09:19Speaker 3: with him. And other times I'd just be like, Nope,
- 1:09:21Speaker 3: you are right.
- 1:09:22Speaker 2: You're a weird guy, you know? So what are you
- 1:09:24Speaker 2: going to do?
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: Pretty much dude. Pretty much.
- 1:09:28Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: RIP Paul Rubens, you know, I mean, you know, it's just, uh,
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: there will be, uh, discarded, uh, Paul Rubens, uh, uh,
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: plastic dolls in landfills for millennia to come. And one
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: day the aliens will land and find it. It was
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: like this and put it on a spaceship and you know,
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: people will be forever.
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: What the hell was wrong with these people?
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: Blur, blah, blah. You know?
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: Well, I think it'll be a while. Cause that's what
- 1:09:56Speaker 2: I was thinking.
- 1:09:57Speaker 3: As soon as it happened, I was like, Oh, those
- 1:09:59Speaker 3: toys are going to go up so much. Every dork
- 1:10:02Speaker 3: that sat on that boxed version of him that they
- 1:10:05Speaker 3: bought in 19-whatever.
- 1:10:08Speaker 2: They just shot up in value.
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: Pretty much, man. Pretty much an artifact of a different
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: time and different space. This reminds me of the Planet
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: of the Apes scene where it's like Dr. Zaius with
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: an ape makeup doll that talks.
- 1:10:24Speaker 2: I don't know. I don't know. Let's ask the lawgiver.
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: Right, right, right.
- 1:10:31Speaker 2: Go to the sayer of monkey laws and see what
- 1:10:33Speaker 2: he says to us.
- 1:10:35Speaker 3: Oh my gosh.
- 1:10:36Speaker 2: Oh my gosh.
- 1:10:37Speaker 3: So speaking of a different time, I think when we
- 1:10:40Speaker 3: threw out this concept, one of the things was just
- 1:10:44Speaker 3: the world upon us and the changes in the industry
- 1:10:48Speaker 3: that are going on that we were like, ah, odds
- 1:10:51Speaker 3: are we'll just get on that tangent and go on
- 1:10:53Speaker 3: for an hour or so.
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: Sure.
- 1:10:55Speaker 3: Did you want to address any of the things going
- 1:10:58Speaker 3: on right about now?
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: You know, you know, Brian, you know, the more I
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: thought about it, I don't have very many deep thoughts
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: about it. All right.
- 1:11:06Speaker 2: I mean, I don't know if we have deep thoughts,
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: but we have a lot to say.
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean, yeah, we could talk about it. I mean,
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: I would just I guess I guess it's me over.
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: All right. You got to understand there's things that are
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: happening and then there are things that are I just
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: think are happening because I don't get out much. And
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: so I'm just filling in the blanks with some hallucination.
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: All right. So, you know, their original concept was, you know,
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: the death of movies or something, which.
- 1:11:36Speaker 2: I already argued with as soon as you brought it up.
- 1:11:38Speaker 2: I was like, right. That's not how I'm looking at it.
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: But whatever.
- 1:11:41Speaker 2: We'll argue. Let's go.
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: Honestly, honestly. Well, I guess it's just movies being special
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: or being something where I mean, there's probably more movies
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: being created now than ever. When I drive by the
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: local movie theater on a Friday or Saturday night, it
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: is usually packed.
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: What's a movie theater? Right, right.
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: But see, then there's that side.
- 1:12:03Speaker 2: Tell us, Grandpa. Tell us more about this fictional place
- 1:12:06Speaker 2: you used to go to. Right.
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: So there's the concept where movie theaters used to be
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: like a sacred space, right? And so I think because
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: of just movies being so everywhere and what a movie
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: is has been so diluted as in Now a movie
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: is really a limited series, like a mini series event.
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: Like V, you know, everything, every movie is a V. Oh,
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: if only every movie could be V. V, oh, the dream.
- 1:12:41Speaker 2: Mark Singer everywhere, look.
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: The dream, the dream. You know, lizard people eating hamsters.
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: Diana with her face ripped off.
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: Oh man, so good, so good, so good. But, you know,
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: so what a movie is a movie, you know, and
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: do people even care about movies anymore? I mean, that's what,
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: I guess I'm just seeing, I just know if my
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: parents said, hey, we get to go see a movie.
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: Do you want to go see a movie? It was
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: like a big deal. And if I go to my
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: kids and say, hey, do you want to go see
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: a movie? They go like, meh, movie, schmovie.
- 1:13:10Speaker 2: I have to.
- 1:13:11Speaker 3: Sit still and I can't get on my phone and
- 1:13:15Speaker 3: I can't.
- 1:13:16Speaker 2: Be watching something else at the same time I'm watching it.
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: Yeah, because I make my kids turn off their phones
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: if I take them. I go like, give me your phone.
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: It drives me crazy if they check their phones. I mean,
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: movie Nazi. God, Dad.
- 1:13:32Speaker 2: You're the worst.
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: That's right. I'm going like, you haven't seen a movie
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: until you've talked about it on a podcast. You haven't
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: seen a movie unless I've texted through the entire thing.
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: My thoughts every moment that I'm having watching the movie.
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: I'm tweeting the movie.
- 1:13:49Speaker 2: I mean, that is its own experience.
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: It's fine.
- 1:13:53Speaker 2: Except what's a tweet? Are you talking about x.
- 1:13:58Speaker 3: Yeah no you're not because nobody's gonna call it that
- 1:14:01Speaker 3: it's such a weirdo.
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: It's so like it's so basic to say like we're
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: gonna rebrand this and it's gonna be awesome and what
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: we could call it we could call it x.
- 1:14:11Speaker 3: First of all man nobody's cared about that thing in
- 1:14:13Speaker 3: like 10 years it's like there's a handful of people
- 1:14:17Speaker 3: that still have their little groups that they like to
- 1:14:19Speaker 3: argue on there but they still don't like care about.
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: It no nobody no nobody i know no look there's
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: people who understand twitter they are i think uh uh
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: geniuses and like technological gods that they got to figure
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: out how to make that work for them because for
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: me it just felt like spam coming out.
- 1:14:39Speaker 3: Yeah i mean i just post the link there and
- 1:14:41Speaker 3: leave it at that i'm like yeah i don't like
- 1:14:43Speaker 3: i don't even interact with people on there anymore like
- 1:14:45Speaker 3: at least The old person that I am, Facebook is
- 1:14:48Speaker 3: good for that.
- 1:14:49Speaker 2: Well, I can talk to.
- 1:14:50Speaker 3: My old people, friends, like your message back and forth.
- 1:14:53Speaker 3: And it still functions as much as I don't really
- 1:14:55Speaker 3: like Facebook. It's still like the most functional version of
- 1:14:59Speaker 3: like social interaction out there.
- 1:15:01Speaker 2: That's right. But like the other ones are all just
- 1:15:03Speaker 2: so useless and nobody even interacts. And like, I like posting.
- 1:15:07Speaker 2: my ridiculous pictures on Instagram, but does anybody give a
- 1:15:10Speaker 2: rat's ass? No, nobody cares. It goes out to a
- 1:15:14Speaker 2: billion people around the world and.
- 1:15:16Speaker 3: I get three likes and I'm like, woohoo, this makes
- 1:15:19Speaker 3: it all worthwhile.
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: Three? Wow, I wish I could get three likes.
- 1:15:22Speaker 2: I know, that's the thing. That's a good day if
- 1:15:25Speaker 2: I get the three. I might as well be in
- 1:15:28Speaker 2: my mind. So I'm just like, it doesn't work that way. Like, so.
- 1:15:34Speaker 3: There are some people that have figured out their own
- 1:15:36Speaker 3: magical algorithm and know how to reach people, but.
- 1:15:38Speaker 2: For the most part, it doesn't really work like that
- 1:15:41Speaker 2: for a lot of people.
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: At best, you.
- 1:15:44Speaker 2: Just message your friend and be like, hey, did you
- 1:15:46Speaker 2: see that thing on TV yesterday? And they're like, what's TV?
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: The concept was just like, hey, people don't seem to.
- 1:16:01Speaker 2: And I feel.
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: Like you know, a Vatican one Catholic talking about, oh,
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: that Vatican two, where we're not talking Latin and the
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: masses anymore, you know, is just the end of all spirituality.
- 1:16:13Speaker 2: If you're going to do the rest of this in Latin,
- 1:16:15Speaker 2: we're in trouble. I'm barely speaking. Barely.
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: I'm with you. So, so I feel like it's like,
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: there's no reverence anymore. There's no, it's not a special
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: thing anymore. Everybody's like, is like a salad bar Catholic.
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: You know, they just take, They don't want to watch.
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: They don't want to go through the experience. They want
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: to see a distilled down reaction video of somebody. They
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: don't want to experience it themselves. They want to experience
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: through some personality commenting about it because then they'll know
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: how to react to it.
- 1:16:49Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: It's almost like.
- 1:16:51Speaker 3: The criticisms that John Williams used to have, like, you know,
- 1:16:53Speaker 3: telegraphing every emotional.
- 1:16:54Speaker 2: Beat that you should be feeling, you know.
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: Even my 15-year-old son goes like, oh my gosh, will
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: John Williams just back off a little bit?
- 1:17:16Speaker 2: No, he will not. He's an old man and he
- 1:17:20Speaker 2: knows how to do things.
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: That's right. You will think what John Williams tells you
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: to think. And so that's sort of like when I
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: get a little go like, I go like, yeah, they
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: don't want to, you know, they've got to experience it
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: through this one lens of this one guy who's going
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: to tell them how ridiculous it is without them actually
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: seeing it and making that comment on their own. And then,
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: you know, but so anyway, it's not, it's, it's just
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: me being stupid.
- 1:17:48Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: And it's just me being like, they're enjoying it in
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: a different way than I did. And, you know, it's
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: just shows you how quick, The world changes around you.
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: And every day you're becoming more and more irrelevant. And so,
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: you know, you just got to kind of like huddle
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: together with like other people of your generation and just
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: become more and more out of date, you know, because,
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: you know, my daughter mentioned the fact that they're called
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: movies is like sounds hopelessly outdated. And they're called movies.
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: They're like called talkies. I like those things.
- 1:18:23Speaker 2: They are talkies, by the way.
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: Talkies. They've got the move-in picture show. It sounds like
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: some kind of, I don't know. It's interesting, though. I
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: read how things are different now, how it used to
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: be something. I know it's just me being out of
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: touch with what's happening. I mean, I know. Disclaimer.
- 1:18:46Speaker 2: To some extent, but in a way, you're right.
- 1:18:49Speaker 3: Like, I feel like I can, I can, as time's
- 1:18:52Speaker 3: gone on being the old man I am, I can
- 1:18:55Speaker 3: still rant, but I'm also not your typical old man
- 1:18:58Speaker 3: because I still like pay attention to what's going on.
- 1:19:01Speaker 3: to some extent in my weird filtered through my old
- 1:19:03Speaker 3: man way. So I don't pretend like I'm hip, but
- 1:19:06Speaker 3: I still try to at least pay attention to new things.
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:19:09Speaker 2: So like I end up sort of straddling both. I'm like, yes,
- 1:19:14Speaker 2: I agree. It's not the way it used to be
- 1:19:17Speaker 2: at all.
- 1:19:17Speaker 3: Right. And most people really don't give it that level
- 1:19:21Speaker 3: of reverence anymore. Like, Even if they like something, they
- 1:19:24Speaker 3: liked it. And five minutes later, they've moved on and
- 1:19:27Speaker 3: they've watched a new thing on TikTok since then.
- 1:19:30Speaker 2: Right, right, right.
- 1:19:31Speaker 3: There is a big shift in just like the culture
- 1:19:34Speaker 3: as it goes from one generation to the next and
- 1:19:37Speaker 3: now several down. It's like several generations of filtering through
- 1:19:41Speaker 3: this stuff. But at the same time, I've changed as
- 1:19:46Speaker 3: a person too enough that like sometimes I'm like, Just
- 1:19:51Speaker 3: fine being with the wave of people now that are
- 1:19:55Speaker 3: also like, but I don't.
- 1:19:57Speaker 2: Really want to go.
- 1:19:58Speaker 3: So I can be the old lazy bastard that I
- 1:20:02Speaker 3: am and be like, okay, but this thing right here
- 1:20:06Speaker 3: that I have in the stack of 400 Blu-rays over
- 1:20:09Speaker 3: here that I can't afford to keep buying.
- 1:20:12Speaker 2: If I can watch that here, I can watch it
- 1:20:14Speaker 2: whenever the hell I want. Cause that's the thing.
- 1:20:17Speaker 3: It's like, we were talking about new stuff that was
- 1:20:19Speaker 3: coming out and I'm like, except I haven't seen any
- 1:20:21Speaker 3: of these movies.
- 1:20:21Speaker 2: We just, you know, list it off. And then you're like, well,
- 1:20:24Speaker 2: we're a part of the problem. Right.
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:20:26Speaker 3: Which I was like, to some extent. But at the
- 1:20:29Speaker 3: same time, I'm like, I'm still enjoying movies.
- 1:20:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:20:32Speaker 3: But I'm doing it at my own pace, in my
- 1:20:36Speaker 3: own place, in my own convenience. Like I'm enjoying all
- 1:20:40Speaker 3: of the convenient parts of being able to do it
- 1:20:42Speaker 3: when and wherever the hell you want. But yet when
- 1:20:45Speaker 3: I do it, I still like turn everything. Well, when
- 1:20:48Speaker 3: I'm actually paying attention to me like TV, I don't
- 1:20:50Speaker 3: treat that way. Like TV, I am working.
- 1:20:52Speaker 2: On something else.
- 1:20:53Speaker 3: I've got something else going on in the room. I'm
- 1:20:56Speaker 3: doing six things. And like, I just look up every
- 1:20:58Speaker 3: once in a while. Like, ah, there's that thing on TV, whatever.
- 1:21:00Speaker 3: So like, I don't have any real reverence for it
- 1:21:03Speaker 3: unless it is a series. And then I do treat
- 1:21:06Speaker 3: it kind of like a movie and I stop what
- 1:21:08Speaker 3: I'm doing and pay attention.
- 1:21:09Speaker 2: But normal broadcast crap.
- 1:21:11Speaker 3: Like it's rare that I pay attention to almost at all,
- 1:21:14Speaker 3: but movies I treat as a separate special thing. So
- 1:21:18Speaker 3: it's like, okay, I'm stopping what I'm doing.
- 1:21:20Speaker 2: I'm off the laptop. I'm off my phone. I'm turning
- 1:21:23Speaker 2: out the light half the time. Like, right.
- 1:21:25Speaker 3: Like, focusing on the movies but i'm doing it when
- 1:21:29Speaker 3: i want and i'm doing it without other weirdos next
- 1:21:31Speaker 3: to me because that's the thing the last few times
- 1:21:34Speaker 3: i've went.
- 1:21:34Speaker 2: I'm like i don't really want to sit this close
- 1:21:36Speaker 2: to this weird person.
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: Dude ain't that the truth ain't.
- 1:21:40Speaker 3: That the truth i didn't used to have that problem
- 1:21:42Speaker 3: but i think you know covid sitting around for years
- 1:21:45Speaker 3: by myself now i'm just like i'm really close to
- 1:21:48Speaker 3: this person i don't know.
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: I think the last time we talked, we said, yeah,
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: I think people are different. Oh, I don't have to
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: be around people all day. That's true. I can do
- 1:22:03Speaker 1: it when I want to now, but I kind of
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: like certain aspects of the lock-in. But here's the problem.
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: Here's the problem. All right. So, yes. I'm not going
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: to get into it. But it's I get into it here.
- 1:22:20Speaker 2: You know, feel free to.
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: That's I'm not going to get into it because, you know,
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: I get into something in detail on a podcast. But
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: it just sounds ridiculous. Like I'm a crazy person.
- 1:22:31Speaker 2: But that's what podcaster for. OK. Crazy people to have
- 1:22:35Speaker 2: a voice.
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: Right. OK. OK. So anyway, it's nothing it. thank god
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: it's gone i don't even remember what i was going
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: to say but uh so good good i've spared the listeners.
- 1:22:46Speaker 2: There's another ramble coming just.
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: Wait yeah yeah we'll bubble back up um but uh
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: but no no no no so movies uh and just
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: it's it's nothing new but my uh uh very modest
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: uh system at home which kind of looks like a
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: sheet on a, on a wall, you know, and I
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: got this projector, you know? Okay. So, so yeah, we've, we, we,
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: we've sunk probably what you would have spent, you know,
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: going to the movies for a year into a home system.
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: And so the quality and the sound are, are so good.
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: And you've always got your best seat and you've got
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: an unlimited supply of fresh coffee that, that you picked out.
- 1:23:36Speaker 2: They won't give you at the theater, by the way.
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: And if you, you know, sometimes you go to the
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: movie theater and say like, Hey, can I have a
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: cup of coffee? And they go like, and they bring
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: out one of those Keurig things. And you really, you,
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: you just want to die. You know, you just go like, nevermind.
- 1:23:50Speaker 2: That's a whole nother road to head down.
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: I'm not going to get into it. Not going to
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: get into it. Cause you know, it's not like I
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: have any class or taste or anything like that. But
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: when I see somebody try to give me a Keurig
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: cup of coffee, I become the Ratatouille food critic.
- 1:24:10Speaker 2: It's weird that I was almost going to ask you
- 1:24:12Speaker 2: about that today.
- 1:24:14Speaker 3: As I was getting my giant cup of coffee, because
- 1:24:17Speaker 3: I know someone else, someone who has been on this show,
- 1:24:20Speaker 3: and will freak the fuck out if you mention the
- 1:24:23Speaker 3: idea that you had a Keurig.
- 1:24:25Speaker 2: And I'm just like, I don't really care.
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: Like I just want some coffee and.
- 1:24:32Speaker 3: Like, there's a, I go to fancier coffee, but no,
- 1:24:35Speaker 3: I'm just not that, I'm not that picky about it.
- 1:24:37Speaker 3: I'm just like, I appreciate it when it's good, but
- 1:24:40Speaker 3: otherwise sometimes I just want something and I don't care.
- 1:24:43Speaker 2: So I, but I was thinking that I was like, knowing.
- 1:24:45Speaker 3: What I know about you, I bet you're going to
- 1:24:47Speaker 3: be really picky about, you know, something is.
- 1:24:50Speaker 2: Low brow is a Keurig bird.
- 1:24:52Speaker 3: No, no.
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: And I'm, I'm cause I'm a, I'm a, I'm the problem.
- 1:24:56Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: I know. It's like, it's like, it's like, I will
- 1:24:59Speaker 1: sit and watch like whatever Texas chainsaw crap is out,
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: you know, and everything. And, and, and like, you know,
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: it's not like I'm, I'm sitting around reading Proust early,
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: you know, war and peace and stuff. And like, you know,
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: only serve wine when it's time, you know?
- 1:25:14Speaker 3: Um, you like sunshine and your slasher movies.
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:25:20Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: I mean, I'm real low brow, but you know, uh, yeah, but,
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: but that's the slippery slope. You start getting a little
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: bit better on it and I'm not, but I do
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: like watching, uh, uh, reels on, you know, whatever, I
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: guess Instagram has got his own version of Tik TOK
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: or something. And like, I watch, uh, basically obsessive coffee people,
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: like spending 27 minutes to make one cup of coffee. And,
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: you know, I'm not at that level of it. I
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: do like watching their OCD going wild.
- 1:25:51Speaker 2: And I appreciate it.
- 1:25:53Speaker 3: At least I, when people get that hardcore into the
- 1:25:56Speaker 3: different processes, I'm like, I, would be if i again
- 1:25:59Speaker 3: if i had time to do that kind of stuff
- 1:26:03Speaker 3: i would invest more in like again i would like
- 1:26:05Speaker 3: to get to the point of like everybody else gets
- 1:26:08Speaker 3: to have their own coffee shop when i get my
- 1:26:10Speaker 3: own coffee shop i'll have different.
- 1:26:11Speaker 2: Versions of that and we can go down that road and.
- 1:26:14Speaker 3: I can kill 27 minutes because what else do i
- 1:26:16Speaker 3: got to do i'm at work now what do i
- 1:26:17Speaker 3: care right right but at home.
- 1:26:19Speaker 2: Sometimes I got five minutes and I got to go
- 1:26:21Speaker 2: to work.
- 1:26:23Speaker 3: So I'll play both sides of it.
- 1:26:26Speaker 2: I don't care. Yeah.
- 1:26:27Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:26:27Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:26:27Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: I get it, man.
- 1:26:28Speaker 2: I get it.
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: That's a, that's a good balanced way to live your life, Brian. Okay.
- 1:26:34Speaker 2: You know, do not, that's the only aspect.
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: Obviously, but also no, no, no, no. But also, you know,
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: I mean, really, I'd probably be like that. And I'm
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: just too lazy to be into anything too much. You know,
- 1:26:46Speaker 1: I mean, it's just, I don't, you know, that keeps
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: me from going off the end. Cause eventually, eventually energy
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: just runs out or I go like, Oh, that's so
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: much work. Yeah.
- 1:26:56Speaker 3: That's, that's me every day at this point.
- 1:26:59Speaker 2: That's why it's a fight to get these episodes out.
- 1:27:02Speaker 3: It's like, that's the other thing I keep doing. And like,
- 1:27:05Speaker 3: there's times when I'm like, just want to go to
- 1:27:07Speaker 3: sleep right now.
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:27:09Speaker 2: And sometimes I do. And that's why if it takes
- 1:27:12Speaker 2: a couple extra days, it's because I went to sleep
- 1:27:14Speaker 2: because I'm freaking tired. So I get it. I'm exhausted
- 1:27:18Speaker 2: just with life in general.
- 1:27:19Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:27:20Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:27:20Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: It's just, it's just exhausting and everything's exhausting. And so,
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: you know, it's just, you know, I mean, yeah. So
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: it'd be great to be that obsessed with something, but
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: at a certain point, you know, it's just kind of
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: nice to zone out, you know? But yeah, so no,
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: you can have your coffee with you. You can have,
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: you know, whatever, you know, and you're not paying $ 5
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: for a cup of Keurig or you're not paying $ 20
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: for a popcorn and you're not.
- 1:27:46Speaker 3: Or with normal people who have like children and shit,
- 1:27:49Speaker 3: you know, an extra hundred dollars to get a babysitter
- 1:27:51Speaker 3: and go eat dinner and like all of this crap that,
- 1:27:55Speaker 3: you know, again, I don't even worry about it, but yeah,
- 1:27:58Speaker 3: it's a whole.
- 1:27:58Speaker 2: Nother level just to leave the house for so many people.
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: That's right. That's right. Just to do normal things now
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: is so expensive and prohibitive that, you know, people kind
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: of have to like revert back to like collecting old
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: paperbacks and stuff like that because everything else is like,
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: so the mainstream going to see a ball game, going
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: to see a movie, you know, uh, doing, taking a vacation,
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: all that stuff is so expensive.
- 1:28:25Speaker 2: Now it's, uh, This is why I don't do any
- 1:28:28Speaker 2: of these.
- 1:28:28Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:28:29Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: You've really kind of got to go back to like
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: retro ways of enjoying yourself because the, what's popular right
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: now is, uh, though, you know, I mean, everybody's mostly
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: just hypnotized to their phones right now. So, I mean,
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: it's really just like that, that, that just costs your, uh,
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: internet bill and, uh, your cell phone thing. And so
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: that's pretty much it. And then you're just like, you're
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: all set, you know, I mean, why ever do anything?
- 1:28:52Speaker 2: Right. which is what a lot of people do.
- 1:28:56Speaker 3: Like there are a ton of people that are just like,
- 1:28:58Speaker 3: this is how they get through their day. And like,
- 1:29:01Speaker 3: when you suggest going to something, they're just like, what
- 1:29:04Speaker 3: are you talking about?
- 1:29:06Speaker 2: Like, I really feel like there are a lot of
- 1:29:07Speaker 2: people that just don't go do things. And like, I'm,
- 1:29:11Speaker 2: I'm getting to that point because.
- 1:29:12Speaker 3: I do see things that I used to go do
- 1:29:15Speaker 3: this kind of thing.
- 1:29:16Speaker 2: And now look at it and go, I'm just, I'm tired.
- 1:29:20Speaker 2: I'm tired.
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: Here's the hope, though. Here's the hope of tomorrow. I'm
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: just going to go on this road.
- 1:29:29Speaker 2: Here's the hope.
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: My daughter, my 17-year-old, she bought a CD the other day.
- 1:29:37Speaker 2: Classic. That's how I live.
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: This is weird.
- 1:29:42Speaker 2: I did, too.
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: I still do that.
- 1:29:44Speaker 4: Awesome.
- 1:29:44Speaker 2: She showed me that.
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: Uh like these midwestern goodwills post their stuff that they
- 1:29:55Speaker 1: can't move on ebay and so she bought a what
- 1:30:00Speaker 1: like a panic at the disco cd from a goodwill
- 1:30:04Speaker 1: in colorado.
- 1:30:07Speaker 2: What anyway so convoluted so.
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: Convoluted right and so she opened up and she goes
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: like i've never seen this artwork oh my gosh and
- 1:30:15Speaker 1: inside here there's all the lyrics and i'm going like
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: i'm going like.
- 1:30:18Speaker 2: It's like a paperback It's a physical thing. It's amazing.
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: And you're holding it and you're going like, that was
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: the whole point. It's like, you took time out of
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: your day to listen to music, you know? I mean,
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: it was something, it was, you took time out of
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: your day to watch movies. You took time out of
- 1:30:33Speaker 1: your day to listen to music. You would go from album,
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: from first track to last track, looking at the artwork,
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: reading along with the lyrics, really taking space to enjoy these,
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: these culture products, you know, these cut, these, these out,
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: these outpourings of expression, you know, and commercialize or whatever
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: somebody had to, and it was just certain thing, you know, and, um,
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: That is lost now, I feel. And I think they
- 1:31:00Speaker 1: feel that. I mean, I think they feel that there's
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: something missing and constantly available.
- 1:31:05Speaker 3: They probably don't even know what, you know, because they
- 1:31:08Speaker 3: didn't have that.
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: They never had it.
- 1:31:09Speaker 2: They didn't grow up with that.
- 1:31:10Speaker 3: So, like, it's... When you get that glimpse of a
- 1:31:14Speaker 3: retro view that weird old guys are talking about on
- 1:31:17Speaker 3: the podcast, it probably hits them a little weird.
- 1:31:20Speaker 2: And they're just like, what is this feeling?
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: Why would you do it that way? That does... that
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: is not efficient. You know, there is so much easier
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: ways to do this, but so there's easier ways to
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: do it. I can watch a movie at the house,
- 1:31:34Speaker 1: you know, going to the movie theater. If certain changes
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: in the movie theater experience, you know, over the years have,
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: have made it not what it was, you know, first
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: it was, You know, the curtain up didn't come up anymore.
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: And then there was like there's like an hour of
- 1:31:52Speaker 1: commercials before you even get to the trailer. No joke, man. Dude, absolutely.
- 1:31:58Speaker 1: That is crazy. Now our commercials, all that stuff. And
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: then and then there was the trend. I do like
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: the idea of the assigned seating, but sometimes, you know.
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: You know, sometimes that doesn't work out.
- 1:32:10Speaker 3: I think that saved me from like completely not wanting
- 1:32:14Speaker 3: to go because now at least I don't have to
- 1:32:16Speaker 3: show up early because I'm already going to sit there
- 1:32:18Speaker 3: for an hour beforehand watching.
- 1:32:19Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:32:20Speaker 2: So I definitely don't want to get there an extra
- 1:32:22Speaker 2: 45 minutes early just to find a seat. So that
- 1:32:24Speaker 2: was good.
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: And so then you don't have to be disappointed when
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: you show up to the theater and like, oh, your
- 1:32:28Speaker 1: seat is gone.
- 1:32:29Speaker 3: Except that still kind of happens but mostly because people
- 1:32:31Speaker 3: are dumb because the last the last movie i went
- 1:32:34Speaker 3: to i bought a seat i bought a seat like
- 1:32:36Speaker 3: a week ahead of time because i knew or at
- 1:32:38Speaker 3: least a few days i think that one usually i'm
- 1:32:40Speaker 3: like a good week ahead of time because i'm like
- 1:32:42Speaker 3: i there's only a handful of movies i bother to
- 1:32:44Speaker 3: go see i'm gonna plan ahead right so like this
- 1:32:46Speaker 3: last one i went you know i went online i
- 1:32:48Speaker 3: got the seat i was all set i got there
- 1:32:51Speaker 3: there's people in it those people are like I'm like,
- 1:32:55Speaker 3: they're just a dumb family. Just no offense to them,
- 1:32:58Speaker 3: but they're a dumb family. And I was just like,
- 1:33:02Speaker 3: I don't feel like fighting and making all you idiots move.
- 1:33:05Speaker 2: But I'm like, I'm just going to, I'm.
- 1:33:07Speaker 3: Going to say, I'm going to sit as close as
- 1:33:09Speaker 3: I can to where I was supposed to be. And
- 1:33:11Speaker 3: then if, if this all goes to hell, I'll get
- 1:33:14Speaker 3: up and move because somebody else is probably going to
- 1:33:16Speaker 3: need to sit here pretty soon.
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:33:18Speaker 2: And no joke, before the.
- 1:33:19Speaker 3: Movie started, an entire other dumb family comes in and
- 1:33:22Speaker 3: is like, are you in 13 F?
- 1:33:25Speaker 2: And they'll be like, oh, I don't know. And there's
- 1:33:27Speaker 2: this five minute exchange of morons.
- 1:33:30Speaker 3: And then eventually everybody got up and shifted to the
- 1:33:33Speaker 3: right seats.
- 1:33:34Speaker 2: And I'm like, now, wouldn't it have made more sense
- 1:33:36Speaker 2: to just do that the first time when you sat
- 1:33:38Speaker 2: down in the right seat? Because that's the whole point
- 1:33:41Speaker 2: of buying a science.
- 1:33:42Speaker 3: Right, right.
- 1:33:43Speaker 2: So we don't have to do this crap.
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: What do you think it is? 1998?
- 1:33:46Speaker 2: I'm like, just shuffle in and sit where you want.
- 1:33:49Speaker 2: What year is this?
- 1:33:50Speaker 1: Jesus. So you got to become like Fonzie or something
- 1:33:54Speaker 1: like that. You're like, hey, punk, you're in my seat.
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: It's like, hey, I got it. Look at my phone here.
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: Look at my barcode. You're in my seat, punk.
- 1:34:02Speaker 3: I'm going to go bump the screen and get the
- 1:34:04Speaker 3: movie to start when we're done.
- 1:34:05Speaker 2: But not until you get your ass out of my seat.
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:34:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:34:10Speaker 1: But so. so yeah, so that was a good thing.
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: The bad thing is, you know, a lot of places
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: now serve like food, like real food, you know? And so,
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: you know, you're like trying to watch and it's like, uh,
- 1:34:21Speaker 1: It's like the guy next to you is like, you're
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: trying to watch this movie and they're like nachos. It's
- 1:34:26Speaker 1: like chomping on a, like a, you know, a barbecue sandwich,
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: you know? And it's just like, Oh God, you.
- 1:34:32Speaker 2: Know, slapping lips and slurping. It's just nasty.
- 1:34:36Speaker 1: And you're just going like, Oh man, you know.
- 1:34:38Speaker 3: Luckily we don't have a ton of that here. I
- 1:34:40Speaker 3: think you're at a cooler city. So you probably have
- 1:34:42Speaker 3: a lot of that. We have, you know, your random
- 1:34:44Speaker 3: ass popcorn and whatever stuff they have behind the counter
- 1:34:47Speaker 3: at the chain theater.
- 1:34:48Speaker 2: But yeah, When you get to the fancier ones, like
- 1:34:51Speaker 2: I can see it as a presentation.
- 1:34:54Speaker 3: Like I can see you putting that spin on it
- 1:34:56Speaker 3: to bring people in because they kind of needed, you know, hey,
- 1:34:59Speaker 3: we're spinning more plates. Come see this, you know, and
- 1:35:02Speaker 3: you can get a fancy meal. So I can see
- 1:35:05Speaker 3: the end of it that you would want to do that.
- 1:35:08Speaker 3: But the practical end of sitting next to that person
- 1:35:10Speaker 3: eating a barbecue sandwich is a whole nother story.
- 1:35:13Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: It is kind of like weird. like not real food,
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: you know, it's like, it looks like real food, but
- 1:35:18Speaker 1: when you bite into it, you're kind of like, Oh,
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: this is kind of like, it's kind of like the seat. Oh, Oh,
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: I think, uh, man, my stupid headphones might be going
- 1:35:26Speaker 1: out here in a minute. Uh, it's, it, it tells
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: me please charging.
- 1:35:30Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: It's, it's like, it's like some weird translation of what
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: they think it should say.
- 1:35:34Speaker 2: Aliens are talking to you.
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: Please charging, please charging. Um, so, So, yeah, the food
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: is like it's like the fly. You know, it's like,
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: you know, it's like there's something synthetic about this steak.
- 1:35:46Speaker 2: You know, it looks like meat, but it looks like
- 1:35:49Speaker 2: things off.
- 1:35:51Speaker 1: Right. Right. Exactly. Let me change my headphones real quick,
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: because now I'm like, it gives me give me 30 seconds.
- 1:36:01Speaker 2: All right. I'll just wrap up this episode.
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: What time is it?
- 1:36:07Speaker 2: I mean, enough that we should probably just start another episode.
- 1:36:10Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:36:11Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:36:11Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: Cool. All right.
- 1:36:12Speaker 2: Excellent.
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: Yeah. I'll freshen my coffee. I'll, I'll, uh, bio break
- 1:36:17Speaker 1: is what they call it now at work. Oh, I'm
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: going to take a bio break.
- 1:36:21Speaker 2: I'm like, That's weird and clinical.
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: I was like a David Cronenberg movie. You know, I'm
- 1:36:27Speaker 1: going to like go hook myself up and do like
- 1:36:28Speaker 1: some paste hose. That's going to feed me.
- 1:36:32Speaker 3: Oh, he's going to go attach himself to a piece
- 1:36:36Speaker 3: of machinery and we're going to wrap this one up
- 1:36:38Speaker 3: and we'll just be back for the next one.
- 1:36:42Speaker 2: As soon as we finish this nonsense.
- 1:36:44Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:36:45Speaker 2: Yes.
- 1:36:45Speaker 3: Yes.
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: All right. Give me, give me, give me two minutes.
- 1:36:48Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:36:49Speaker 1: Okay. All right.
- 1:36:51Speaker 2: So with that, we will wrap this one up and
- 1:36:53Speaker 2: be back for more insane talk the next episode. Otherwise,
- 1:36:57Speaker 2: that about does it. We will return next time. Same
- 1:36:59Speaker 2: geek feed. Thanks for listening.
- 1:37:01Speaker 7: Anthropology is the perfect alliance of cultural studies and biological science.
- 1:37:06Speaker 6: But it's hard to remember when you're taking a class.
- 1:37:08Speaker 2: All those hominid species from the first to the last.
- 1:37:10Speaker 6: Now I'm not trying to be too professorial.
- 1:37:13Speaker 2: Just putting this rhyme out there as a tutorial. For
- 1:37:15Speaker 2: people interested.
- 1:37:16Speaker 7: In plugging prehistorical gaps, this is the hominid rap. the
- 1:37:24Speaker 7: history starts with a single partial cranium.
- 1:37:26Speaker 1: That blew it all apart like a bomb of.
- 1:37:28Speaker 6: Uranium provisionally dated through faunal correlation this tiny fellow caused
- 1:37:32Speaker 6: a pretty big sensation seven million years ago he lived
- 1:37:35Speaker 6: in northern chad in the jurab desert with his mom
- 1:37:37Speaker 6: and dad it's hard to know from the little that
- 1:37:40Speaker 6: was found if he swung through the trees or he
- 1:37:42Speaker 6: walked upon the ground that's the teeth he's clinging to
- 1:37:44Speaker 6: a fossilized view with a canine small enough to make
- 1:37:46Speaker 6: me think of you with his big.
- 1:37:48Speaker 2: Brow reaches and a sagittal crest.
- 1:37:49Speaker 7: Sahelanthropus who does his game before the rest sahelanthropus we're.
- 1:37:57Speaker 1: Talking about monkeys trying to figure that's what i'm saying
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: we might as well i'm going like yeah the microphone
- 1:38:03Speaker 1: was so far away from me right bring.
- 1:38:05Speaker 3: In some monkeys it's all good We'll have this covered.
- 1:38:10Speaker 2: No problem. Yeah.
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: I'm not, I'm not going to, you're talking about monkeys.
- 1:38:13Speaker 1: I'm not going to start talking about the monkey documentary
- 1:38:16Speaker 1: I've been watching. So, you know, that's, we'll just, is
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: it on the band?
- 1:38:19Speaker 2: Because then I would be fascinated. Those guys are awesome.
