- 1:52Speaker 4: what that means. Our guy Nick Underhill back from his
- 1:55Speaker 4: travels to Parts unknown. Who knows where he went. He
- 1:58Speaker 4: was gone for a long time, but he's back with
- 2:00Speaker 4: us now. Nicholas, how are we doing, sir?
- 2:04Speaker 2: Whatever Jing Gators is paying you guys, they got to
- 2:06Speaker 2: double it for that that exchanged at the beginning, Like
- 2:08Speaker 2: I'm going to remember that product for like forever, just
- 2:11Speaker 2: because of because of whatever.
- 2:13Speaker 3: Whatever.
- 2:14Speaker 4: This help was, right, Well, you know, we hate gators
- 2:18Speaker 4: here on this show. I don't think we tried to
- 2:20Speaker 4: hide that. So the fact that we let them on
- 2:23Speaker 4: the show, it was a big deal. That's how good
- 2:25Speaker 4: they are, Nick, because well, we hate all forms of
- 2:27Speaker 4: gators here on this show.
- 2:29Speaker 3: All right, Well that's fair, that's fair.
- 2:31Speaker 4: Thank you. How was your vacation, sir?
- 2:35Speaker 3: It was good. It was good. Glad to be back.
- 2:36Speaker 3: Ready for training camp.
- 2:38Speaker 2: Final countdown here with today fifteen days away, camp's coming.
- 2:42Speaker 2: I'm excited, man, I can't wait to see what this
- 2:44Speaker 2: team is going to be. First time in a very
- 2:46Speaker 2: long time that I think there's genuine excitement going into
- 2:49Speaker 2: a season.
- 2:50Speaker 3: We had like the fake excitement I.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Think with the beginning of the Derek Carr era and
- 2:54Speaker 2: then you remembered, you know, that.
- 2:57Speaker 3: Was what it was.
- 2:58Speaker 2: But I think this time, Yeah, what happens, don't know.
- 3:03Speaker 2: I think this time is treril. I think this time
- 3:05Speaker 2: is treril. I think there's there's real excitement this time.
- 3:07Speaker 4: So we were looking at the schedule and one of
- 3:09Speaker 4: the things, at least for me, I don't want to
- 3:11Speaker 4: speak for Matt, that I would always look at whenever
- 3:13Speaker 4: we got our schedule was Okay, which divisions are we
- 3:16Speaker 4: going to play? Like, we know we're playing our division,
- 3:18Speaker 4: but what are we going to get in the NFC
- 3:20Speaker 4: and the AFC and the Saints are going to have
- 3:22Speaker 4: the North, the AFC NFC North, And we were taking
- 3:25Speaker 4: a look at, you know, maybe some of the different games,
- 3:27Speaker 4: and for me, like the NFC North is what it is, like,
- 3:31Speaker 4: We're not going to sugarcoat it. Every team had a
- 3:33Speaker 4: winning record. It's going to be very tough for the Saints. Now.
- 3:36Speaker 4: The AFC North on the other side of it, a
- 3:38Speaker 4: lot of unknown new coaches everywhere but Cincinnati. So when
- 3:42Speaker 4: you take a look at that for this Saints team,
- 3:45Speaker 4: I almost feel like if you split with the NFC North,
- 3:48Speaker 4: that could be you getting to nine wins if you
- 3:51Speaker 4: did just that, because I think you're going to have
- 3:53Speaker 4: some success against the AFC North.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I think the way that sets up
- 3:57Speaker 2: too is discuss Look, I think one of the big
- 4:02Speaker 2: differences between this team and previous editions of the team
- 4:05Speaker 2: is when you look at the schedule this year, like,
- 4:07Speaker 2: I think the way it starts out is really tough
- 4:09Speaker 2: Detroit and then Baltimore like very very likely, very possible
- 4:13Speaker 2: that they end up oh and two to start. I
- 4:15Speaker 2: think this team two years ago, I mean you remember
- 4:18Speaker 2: how they started that season. They were so strong, they
- 4:20Speaker 2: came out the gates the first two games.
- 4:22Speaker 3: It was unbelievable.
- 4:23Speaker 2: They were scoring points at a rate where you had
- 4:26Speaker 2: to compare them to the two thousand and seven Patriots
- 4:28Speaker 2: to find like a comp and that was like the
- 4:30Speaker 2: best offense at all time. How they started that season
- 4:33Speaker 2: and then they lose a couple of games when they
- 4:34Speaker 2: fall apart, and they just weren't mentally tough and it
- 4:36Speaker 2: was like here we go again, attitude, and they were
- 4:38Speaker 2: kind of just waiting the whole time for things to
- 4:40Speaker 2: fall apart. I think this team's built in a way
- 4:42Speaker 2: where they can endure it oh and two start, and
- 4:44Speaker 2: I think they're young and dumb in all the right
- 4:46Speaker 2: ways to where they can go through that maintain positivity
- 4:50Speaker 2: and find their way back. So I think the build
- 4:52Speaker 2: of the team's important. Yeah, the NFC North definitely definitely
- 4:56Speaker 2: tough to AFC is going to be determined by a
- 4:58Speaker 2: lot of factors. I mean, you're playing the Bengals and
- 5:00Speaker 2: what November I mean is Burrow gonna be on the
- 5:03Speaker 2: field at that point, Like that's that's a question every
- 5:06Speaker 2: year for them. That could be a really tough game
- 5:08Speaker 2: or it could be, you know, a gimme, depending on
- 5:10Speaker 2: how that kind of sets up. So yeah, there's a
- 5:12Speaker 2: lot of factors there. But the schedule overall, like you
- 5:17Speaker 2: look at it the average strength of opponent and this
- 5:19Speaker 2: is always a BS stat because it changes every year
- 5:22Speaker 2: from beginning of the season to the end. But like,
- 5:24Speaker 2: I don't think it's a murderer's row or anything. I
- 5:26Speaker 2: just think the way some of these things are set
- 5:28Speaker 2: up are a little bit tough. Like there's no longer
- 5:30Speaker 2: road trips in the back half. I think the start's tough.
- 5:33Speaker 2: It's weird you play two games and then you're three
- 5:36Speaker 2: at home, and then you're in New York, and then
- 5:38Speaker 2: straight from New York you're going to Paris. Like that
- 5:40Speaker 2: could end up being a tough swing where maybe you
- 5:42Speaker 2: aren't looking at the Giants and Steelers on paper, and
- 5:45Speaker 2: then coming back you got to buy. And then I
- 5:47Speaker 2: think the Browns after that that doesn't look like a
- 5:50Speaker 2: tough stretch, but like that New York to Paris wing
- 5:53Speaker 2: could be weird for them too, So I.
- 5:56Speaker 3: Think this team has not away games too. Right after that, Yeah, I.
- 6:00Speaker 2: Think it seem has like the mental fortitude to get
- 6:03Speaker 2: through some tough stuff and figure it out, especially in
- 6:06Speaker 2: the back half. I think it kind of opens up
- 6:07Speaker 2: a little bit if you just look at opponents. But yeah,
- 6:10Speaker 2: I think I think it's Yeah. I mean, there's gonna
- 6:12Speaker 2: be some challenges there for sure, with with with the
- 6:15Speaker 2: the the the Norths, but yeah, if they can find
- 6:19Speaker 2: their way through it, I think I think they'll be.
- 6:20Speaker 5: Okay, young and dumb in all the right ways. I
- 6:24Speaker 5: like that. That's very good. Yeah.
- 6:25Speaker 4: Okay, so not broke to and not like the song,
- 6:28Speaker 4: They're not broke.
- 6:29Speaker 5: Yeah, no, no, no doubt colledge. Okay.
- 6:32Speaker 6: So I was gonna ask a question, but you got
- 6:34Speaker 6: me piak of interest right there with what you're talking about.
- 6:37Speaker 5: So they got the middle.
- 6:38Speaker 6: You think they got the mental fortitude to withstand a
- 6:41Speaker 6: tough part of the schedule with saying early losses, why
- 6:45Speaker 6: do you think that.
- 6:46Speaker 2: I mean, we saw it last year. They started out
- 6:50Speaker 2: one way and found their way back. But in the
- 6:52Speaker 2: locker room, look, this is a it's a very kumbai
- 6:56Speaker 2: al locker room, like more so than any I've ever
- 6:58Speaker 2: seen in my life last year. I've been covering the
- 7:01Speaker 2: league since twenty ten, and you know it's guys sit
- 7:03Speaker 2: around singing two thousands R and B songs like Mario
- 7:06Speaker 2: and you know, just in the back.
- 7:08Speaker 4: Corner that they really good time.
- 7:10Speaker 2: Yeah, like like just stuff like that. Man, like they
- 7:13Speaker 2: they they just felt more together than I've ever seen
- 7:17Speaker 2: a team in bad times too, which you know you
- 7:20Speaker 2: can fake that stuff. I think everybody. I think culture
- 7:22Speaker 2: is like the biggest lie in sports. And you guys
- 7:23Speaker 2: can correct me on that, but I think every team
- 7:25Speaker 2: that's good has good culture, and every team that's bad.
- 7:28Speaker 2: Not every team, but most teams that are bad have
- 7:30Speaker 2: bad culture. I think there's assholes that are great teammates
- 7:33Speaker 2: when the team's good, and as soon as things turn bad,
- 7:35Speaker 2: they become the most toxic people in the world. So
- 7:37Speaker 2: I think winning hides a lot of stuff and I
- 7:39Speaker 2: think you actually saw a good culture poking through at
- 7:42Speaker 2: a time where this team was really bad and they
- 7:44Speaker 2: were still still together, still having fine. There wasn't finger pointing,
- 7:48Speaker 2: you know, for someone in my position, there isn't a
- 7:50Speaker 2: the twelve thirty am text from a grumpy player on
- 7:54Speaker 2: you know, Sunday night after a loss, like you know,
- 7:56Speaker 2: trying to air people out and stuff like that. I mean,
- 7:59Speaker 2: they're just none of that was happening. So I just
- 8:03Speaker 2: I think that they're positive enough right now. And I
- 8:05Speaker 2: think a lot of that comes from Kellam Moore. I
- 8:07Speaker 2: think a lot of times teams are built in the
- 8:09Speaker 2: image of the coach and like he's a very positive, happy,
- 8:11Speaker 2: go lucky type of person, and I think the team
- 8:14Speaker 2: kind of took on his personality. Now, how much mileage
- 8:16Speaker 2: do you get out of that, that's, you know, debatable obviously.
- 8:19Speaker 2: I think it maybe it even changes this year because
- 8:22Speaker 2: there's there's some level of expectation of at least a
- 8:25Speaker 2: march towards success, if not success itself. But I just
- 8:29Speaker 2: think we saw things last year that felt unfakable that
- 8:32Speaker 2: make me believe that they could drop to and kind
- 8:35Speaker 2: of be in there. And like I said, We've been
- 8:37Speaker 2: around teams that have lost a couple of games in
- 8:38Speaker 2: a row when they had every reason to believe and
- 8:41Speaker 2: it just quickly fell apart.
- 8:43Speaker 4: Now, what are the other things that we were talking
- 8:45Speaker 4: about with this team like this year compared to the
- 8:49Speaker 4: team you're talking about last year. If we're looking offensively,
- 8:53Speaker 4: I think they're better at receiver, tied end, offensive line, quarterback,
- 8:57Speaker 4: and running back. Like I truly believe that they've added
- 9:00Speaker 4: added pieces to every one of those rooms. Now the
- 9:03Speaker 4: quarterback room they've added, But it's more about the development
- 9:06Speaker 4: another year for Tyler Schuck after those eight games, But
- 9:10Speaker 4: I don't really know how you could argue against it.
- 9:12Speaker 4: I mean, now, defensively, it's a little bit of a
- 9:14Speaker 4: different subject. I mean, you lost some dbs that you
- 9:16Speaker 4: didn't really replace, and Kate Nelis is a different player
- 9:19Speaker 4: than to Mario Davis. But offensively, they feel like they
- 9:23Speaker 4: are going to be better on every single level.
- 9:27Speaker 2: Totally agree on not like there's no way that the
- 9:29Speaker 2: offense can't be better. You had a top ten receiver,
- 9:33Speaker 2: you had two tight ends, you add David Edwards to
- 9:35Speaker 2: the mesh. Fag and Banks got another year of seasoning
- 9:39Speaker 2: and growth, especially Banks getting the you know, the the
- 9:42Speaker 2: year or two typically you see people get.
- 9:44Speaker 3: Better in that area.
- 9:46Speaker 2: Shuck should be better. I think Aham makes a huge
- 9:49Speaker 2: difference at running back. The thing on offense is just
- 9:52Speaker 2: you know, Tyler got sacked thirty one times and played
- 9:56Speaker 2: nine games like that number has to change drastically, but
- 9:59Speaker 2: they often to bone I think helps with that. Red
- 10:02Speaker 2: zone's got to be way better. That was something that
- 10:03Speaker 2: was terrible. And then those first drives. I don't know
- 10:07Speaker 2: what the answer is there. That was the weirdest thing
- 10:10Speaker 2: really ever like that that they just couldn't score points.
- 10:13Speaker 2: I think with Shucks starting to average one point one
- 10:16Speaker 2: points per opening drive, like that's got to change too.
- 10:18Speaker 2: But I think all those things kind of kind of
- 10:20Speaker 2: take care of themselves. I think red zone gets better
- 10:22Speaker 2: with better weapons. He was getting the red zone at Louisville,
- 10:24Speaker 2: so I don't think that's like a fatal flaw on him.
- 10:26Speaker 2: The defense, I don't know. I've been looking at this
- 10:29Speaker 2: team for like in a parked position, for so long
- 10:32Speaker 2: that I think I've talked myself into believing that the
- 10:35Speaker 2: defense is going to be better and good, which is
- 10:38Speaker 2: kind of what you you start out. You just kind of.
- 10:40Speaker 2: I don't know, things go away over time. We're about
- 10:42Speaker 2: to find out. I think there's reasons to worry and
- 10:45Speaker 2: there's reasons not to. I just man, it's just such
- 10:49Speaker 2: a huge question in the secondary. Like we don't know
- 10:51Speaker 2: anything about Snacker in the slot. Yeah, this week, like
- 10:55Speaker 2: I went back over and looked at like he had
- 10:56Speaker 2: three hundred and sixty eight snaps. I think at Virginia
- 10:59Speaker 2: in the slot through and I watched all of them,
- 11:01Speaker 2: and there's some stuff to feel good about and there's some.
- 11:02Speaker 3: Stuff to feel bad about.
- 11:04Speaker 2: So I think that's going to determine a lot on
- 11:07Speaker 2: the team. I've kind of talked myself into a position
- 11:11Speaker 2: where I think adding Ellis gives you things and maybe
- 11:15Speaker 2: it ends up being a wash this year, But that
- 11:17Speaker 2: might be like a stupid point of view because Tomiro
- 11:19Speaker 2: is such a good player. But yeah, I think the
- 11:21Speaker 2: offense is gonna be way better. And if they're if
- 11:23Speaker 2: they're winning nine games that they're taking care of the
- 11:25Speaker 2: NFC North, it's gonna because they're scoring, you know, thirty
- 11:28Speaker 2: points a game and you know, positions like that. So
- 11:32Speaker 2: the defense just has to be okay. Staley has to
- 11:35Speaker 2: coach at the level he did last year. He got
- 11:37Speaker 2: way more out of him than he should have. And yeah,
- 11:40Speaker 2: but I think the offense is absolutely level up. And
- 11:43Speaker 2: look Bill Barnwell from ESPN, like he hates like he's
- 11:47Speaker 2: not a Saints homer, Like he hates the Saints like
- 11:49Speaker 2: he racked them in the top ten like offensive weapons
- 11:52Speaker 2: in the NFL. So you know, a guy that's been
- 11:54Speaker 2: down on this team during like the breeze era, it
- 11:57Speaker 2: like feels like they got.
- 11:58Speaker 3: Good weapons right now.
- 11:59Speaker 2: So yeah, I think I think they're in a I
- 12:01Speaker 2: think they're in a spot to get better on offense.
- 12:04Speaker 6: Nick, what's more likely to happen this year? The Saints
- 12:08Speaker 6: have six wins or six losses.
- 12:13Speaker 2: I don't see them having less than six losses in
- 12:17Speaker 2: any scenario. Like, I think, like that would be eleven wins,
- 12:21Speaker 2: So I mean, yeah.
- 12:22Speaker 5: I mean six eleven, which one is more likely?
- 12:27Speaker 2: Probably six and eleven because I mean I just think
- 12:29Speaker 2: the injuries and and like that's just such a huge jump, Dad,
- 12:31Speaker 2: five wins to a team like that, that would be
- 12:33Speaker 2: a little bit rose colored there. Yeah, I think I
- 12:38Speaker 2: think six and eleven is more likely because a couple
- 12:40Speaker 2: like if what what would happen? If Chase Young miss games,
- 12:43Speaker 2: where are you getting your past rush for them? Like
- 12:45Speaker 2: if kool Aid misses a couple of games, like I
- 12:47Speaker 2: think you're you're cooked there. If Kate Ellis misses a
- 12:49Speaker 2: couple of games, I think you're cooked there. I think
- 12:51Speaker 2: their secondaries built quite a bit on the idea of
- 12:54Speaker 2: like I guess Sanker could drop back, but like Julian Blackman,
- 12:58Speaker 2: you got a bet on him probably getting hurt at
- 12:59Speaker 2: some point, and then what happens there, Like does Jordan
- 13:02Speaker 2: Houten go in? I think that would be a step
- 13:03Speaker 2: down to Sanker move back. Now you're upset and kind
- 13:05Speaker 2: of your your your your your secondary configuration as a whole,
- 13:11Speaker 2: it's just so thin in so many places. I think offensively,
- 13:14Speaker 2: like they're built to endure some injuries. I think they
- 13:17Speaker 2: got off offensive lineman six and you know, maybe even
- 13:21Speaker 2: seven on that group, which you get down to you know, your.
- 13:24Speaker 3: Wide receivers or injury proNT.
- 13:25Speaker 2: So there's just too many ways that I think it
- 13:27Speaker 2: can It could go wrong this year. So if I
- 13:30Speaker 2: had to pick eleven wins or sick or eleven losses,
- 13:33Speaker 2: I probably I probably leaned towards the losses.
- 13:35Speaker 3: At this point.
- 13:37Speaker 4: Now, there's some places where the Saints on the deepened
- 13:40Speaker 4: the side of the football is we're talking about, they
- 13:42Speaker 4: could be better. Now you have what about six million
- 13:45Speaker 4: dollars in salary cap space. There's some interesting free agents
- 13:49Speaker 4: still out there, certainly at corner. There's some veteran players,
- 13:52Speaker 4: some that have played for you before, but they're out
- 13:55Speaker 4: there right now. But you don't have a ton of
- 13:57Speaker 4: money to spend with kind of all those things being known,
- 14:01Speaker 4: do you think this Saints' roster is kind of what
- 14:03Speaker 4: it is at this point? Do you expect maybe three
- 14:06Speaker 4: four days into camp they could add a corner, they
- 14:08Speaker 4: could add a safety, a veteran player to those units
- 14:11Speaker 4: if they don't see what they want to see early
- 14:13Speaker 4: in camp.
- 14:15Speaker 2: I think like what they are is what they are
- 14:16Speaker 2: at this point. There's always some guys coming in, but
- 14:19Speaker 2: I don't think it would be anybody that you're looking
- 14:21Speaker 2: at to.
- 14:21Speaker 3: Change your fortunes or anything like that.
- 14:23Speaker 2: Like it could be, you know, there's always a name
- 14:26Speaker 2: brand guy like midway through camp, like oh, keme next,
- 14:29Speaker 2: but it's like you're four years too late.
- 14:31Speaker 5: You know.
- 14:31Speaker 2: There's always that type of type of movement there or uh,
- 14:36Speaker 2: I don't think Marshawan comes back, man, I think it
- 14:38Speaker 2: kind of Uh, I don't think that ended well.
- 14:41Speaker 3: I don't think it ended well. Yeah, I think I
- 14:44Speaker 3: think they're kind of sat.
- 14:44Speaker 2: Where they're at, Like and I don't even know where
- 14:46Speaker 2: you would go spend money to make a major difference,
- 14:48Speaker 2: like if you at a corner, Like it's probably like
- 14:50Speaker 2: a Nike Adam type level player.
- 14:52Speaker 3: I know, like Keenan Allen's name was.
- 14:54Speaker 2: Floated around out there, but I don't know how the
- 14:57Speaker 2: Saints makes sense for Keenan Allen, Like it just doesn't.
- 15:00Speaker 2: I don't know where he would get his snaps. Like
- 15:02Speaker 2: it just kind of feels like they're there's set at
- 15:04Speaker 2: those spots, and you where you're at on this trajectory,
- 15:08Speaker 2: you probably want to go forward with Vele and try
- 15:10Speaker 2: to be younger. I think he showed you enough to
- 15:12Speaker 2: where you aren't trying to get like an older guy
- 15:14Speaker 2: that maybe gives you similar level of play. So yeah,
- 15:19Speaker 2: I think they're kind of I think they're kind of
- 15:20Speaker 2: set where they're at. You know, they'll turn the bottom
- 15:23Speaker 2: of the roster, and they've been aggressive about doing that.
- 15:25Speaker 2: It's been kind of crazy to watch, like how often
- 15:27Speaker 2: like they're rotating them wide receivers and and different stuff.
- 15:31Speaker 2: Like they're definitely not resting on their laurels. But I
- 15:33Speaker 2: don't see a big move or anything that kind of,
- 15:35Speaker 2: you know, moves the needle big time. I don't think
- 15:38Speaker 2: you guys are getting the lead topic off their free
- 15:39Speaker 2: agency moves or anything like that.
- 15:42Speaker 5: Nick.
- 15:42Speaker 6: I mean, it's your job to create stories and follow
- 15:45Speaker 6: stories and to report what you see and stats and
- 15:48Speaker 6: all this stuff. And you're about to be in the
- 15:50Speaker 6: thickest things in training camp, and there's going to be
- 15:53Speaker 6: some downtime. There's may some lowell times that uh, you're
- 15:56Speaker 6: gonna have to have to make some stories.
- 15:58Speaker 5: And but I want to educate our listeners. That's what
- 16:01Speaker 5: we like to do.
- 16:02Speaker 6: Which types of storylines do listeners need to be careful
- 16:06Speaker 6: of believing during training camps?
- 16:09Speaker 2: I mean really anything like the first five to seven days,
- 16:12Speaker 2: like it's all like there's so much energy and there's
- 16:15Speaker 2: so much attention on everything, and it's just it's just
- 16:18Speaker 2: easy to overhype everything early in camp. The main thing
- 16:21Speaker 2: to not pay attention to, I think is like, oh,
- 16:25Speaker 2: so Homoso is in like such good shape, such a
- 16:26Speaker 2: live like every single time there's five years of stories
- 16:31Speaker 2: about andrewt Pete like being in great shape, and there's
- 16:35Speaker 2: just always like something You go out there and yeah,
- 16:37Speaker 2: guys look different, but then you remember that, you go
- 16:40Speaker 2: through training camp and by you know, September twentieth, like
- 16:43Speaker 2: everybody's body is back to where it is because you
- 16:46Speaker 2: aren't doing all the same work and everything. So like
- 16:48Speaker 2: stuff like that, I always try to ignore, you know,
- 16:52Speaker 2: someone making a push ear lay in camp. Oh, Mason
- 16:54Speaker 2: Mason Tiptons made like some huge plays or whatever, and
- 16:58Speaker 2: you know, you kind of get through it and then Okay,
- 17:00Speaker 2: guys kind of settle back to where they were at.
- 17:04Speaker 2: I just think, I just think there's a real danger
- 17:06Speaker 2: of everything getting over hyped, you know, this this time
- 17:09Speaker 2: of year, and it's hard not to do it because
- 17:11Speaker 2: you go out there and you're writing about day one
- 17:12Speaker 2: and training camp. So you're just writing about day one
- 17:15Speaker 2: and training camp without the context of like the next
- 17:17Speaker 2: eighteen days of training camp, and there's just there's so
- 17:20Speaker 2: much attention and so much appetite for it that everything
- 17:23Speaker 2: gets overblown. You know, the the quarterback is gonna get
- 17:27Speaker 2: way over hyped the first couple of days of camp
- 17:28Speaker 2: if he goes ten for eleven and seven on seven's
- 17:31Speaker 2: like someone's gonna, you know, tweet that and it's gonna
- 17:34Speaker 2: get retweeted three hundred and fifty times, and you know,
- 17:37Speaker 2: shucks winning the MVP and they're gonna win the super
- 17:39Speaker 2: Bowl and then you know, it settles back down over
- 17:41Speaker 2: a period of time, Like it's just anything with a
- 17:44Speaker 2: small sample is ridiculous.
- 17:47Speaker 3: But yeah, I mean, I think.
- 17:50Speaker 2: The year two leap stories are always overblown early on
- 17:53Speaker 2: in camp, like it's just anything that has hype behind it.
- 17:55Speaker 2: I think, you know, an if I'm telling the truth,
- 17:58Speaker 2: like I think by like day fifteen a camp, like
- 17:59Speaker 2: you're kind of figuring things out about the unknowing parts
- 18:02Speaker 2: of it, and a lot of it's guessing it really is.
- 18:04Speaker 2: It's a lot of guesswork. And I think this time
- 18:07Speaker 2: of year your prone looked through things through a lens
- 18:09Speaker 2: of optimism as opposed to a lens of pessimism. So
- 18:12Speaker 2: I think anything that's a coin flip two kind of
- 18:14Speaker 2: gets pushed like one direction over the other.
- 18:16Speaker 4: All right, last one before we let you go, Nick
- 18:19Speaker 4: Underhill course our guests every single Tuesday here on OTB,
- 18:23Speaker 4: I'm not like asking you to give me the breakout
- 18:25Speaker 4: star because I agree with the conversation that we just had,
- 18:27Speaker 4: Like sometimes we overhype those guys like no offense to
- 18:30Speaker 4: Mason Tipton, but I've heard his name more than any
- 18:33Speaker 4: Saints player on the roster over the last couple of years.
- 18:37Speaker 4: But it is there a player right now that maybe
- 18:41Speaker 4: is flying under the radar as far as like the
- 18:44Speaker 4: national coverage or even local coverage that you know, without
- 18:48Speaker 4: a shadow of a doubt that the team really thinks
- 18:51Speaker 4: this player can help them in a big way.
- 18:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I think one guy that probably hasn't gotten talked
- 18:56Speaker 2: about a lot and does have at least a little
- 18:58Speaker 2: bit of real production and real highlights, some real real
- 19:02Speaker 2: NFL numbers that I don't think we talk about it
- 19:04Speaker 2: at all.
- 19:04Speaker 3: As Trey Palmer, I think.
- 19:05Speaker 2: He has a real I think he has a real
- 19:07Speaker 2: shot at making the wide receiver thing interesting. Like Jayleen
- 19:10Speaker 2: Polk is there and Jayalen Polk's gotten talked about more,
- 19:13Speaker 2: and I think I probably put him ahead right now.
- 19:15Speaker 2: But Palmer, like he once he finally got out there,
- 19:18Speaker 2: he was hurt like early on during the summer. Then
- 19:20Speaker 2: he gets out there and he reminds you like why
- 19:23Speaker 2: he's a a NFL player, why he's talented, why the
- 19:25Speaker 2: Saints claimed him off waivers. I think that battle, like
- 19:29Speaker 2: not just for roster spots, but I think for wide
- 19:30Speaker 2: receiver like three, like whoever gets the third most snaps
- 19:34Speaker 2: I think is a real thing. Like I think between Bailey, Polk,
- 19:37Speaker 2: and Palmer, Like I don't know where it would end
- 19:41Speaker 2: up between those guys. I think Byle is the obvious
- 19:43Speaker 2: favorite at this point, but like there's two real contenders
- 19:46Speaker 2: behind them, and like if you're just looking at credentials
- 19:49Speaker 2: of how they entered the league, like Polk has better
- 19:51Speaker 2: credentials than all of them, So I don't know that
- 19:53Speaker 2: like just on paper, you say, like there's no chance,
- 19:56Speaker 2: like if things went right for Polk, it could become
- 19:57Speaker 2: a real thing. But Palmer's Like I think he's a
- 20:01Speaker 2: real player. I think he's gonna end up making this team.
- 20:03Speaker 2: If I had the guest today, I would have him
- 20:05Speaker 2: on my fifty three. And I think he has like
- 20:07Speaker 2: a real shot of challenging people for plays long way
- 20:12Speaker 2: to go. But like, I don't think that's an outlandish
- 20:14Speaker 2: thing to say. I don't think it's over hyping anything.
- 20:16Speaker 2: Like he made some really nice plays in Tampa Bay.
- 20:19Speaker 2: The numbers aren't great, but he can he can play
- 20:22Speaker 2: like he can do things to help the team. So
- 20:25Speaker 2: I'm interested to really see how that unfolds out.
- 20:27Speaker 3: I think it's the.
- 20:28Speaker 2: Best receiver group I got here in fourteen. Like there's
- 20:32Speaker 2: a couple maybe maybe one or two years, but I
- 20:34Speaker 2: think it's a top three talented receiver group that I've
- 20:38Speaker 2: been around since i've been here.
- 20:39Speaker 4: Yeah, I've seen Trey Palmer do it since he was
- 20:41Speaker 4: a Kentwood Kangaroo in high school, so he certainly has
- 20:45Speaker 4: the talent. Nick we appreciate as always, So glad you're
- 20:47Speaker 4: back from vacation. Glad you had a great time and
- 20:50Speaker 4: it is here, so hopefully we'll run into you down
- 20:53Speaker 4: in New Ones at training camp as well.
- 20:55Speaker 2: Kangaroos is a wild name for a football team, man always.
- 21:01Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 21:01Speaker 2: I guess they got him out there at the that
- 21:03Speaker 2: wildlife thing. You can go out there and see the
- 21:05Speaker 2: kangaroos laying around and there, and then that's Britney Spears.
- 21:07Speaker 4: That's where she's from. So I mean, make sure had
- 21:09Speaker 4: something to do with.
- 21:11Speaker 3: Al Right, guys, all right, get Nick.
- 21:13Speaker 4: Underhill, New Orleans stuff football joined us every single Tuesday.
- 21:17Speaker 4: Why are there the kangaroos?
- 21:18Speaker 5: I wonder that's a great question.
- 21:20Speaker 4: If you're from Kentwood and you know why you're the kangaroos,
- 21:24Speaker 4: let us know inside the chat. All right, we'll take
- 21:26Speaker 4: a break more ot B when we come back here

- 24:05Speaker 4: camp do you have football camp? Yeah, And I didn't
- 24:07Speaker 4: have any gloves, so I had to get some delivered.
- 24:10Speaker 4: Then I gotta take them to him real quick, and
- 24:12Speaker 4: they gotta go meet catch your ball. Yeah, bro, you
- 24:16Speaker 4: got to teach him without gloves first. No, it's it's
- 24:19Speaker 4: all right him. He's gonna wear him in the game.
- 24:20Speaker 6: So all right, Yeah, they don't build him like they
- 24:25Speaker 6: used to. Jake, Now hold up, now, you gotta earn
- 24:29Speaker 6: that swag. I'll tell Huck that all the time. You
- 24:33Speaker 6: got to earn that swag.
- 24:34Speaker 4: Bros about say, my man, Hug is dripped out at
- 24:36Speaker 4: all times.
- 24:37Speaker 6: He gotta he likes a left sleeve baseball lifestyle. That's clothing,
- 24:45Speaker 6: a left sleeve. He likes the I don't know, gotta
- 24:53Speaker 6: earn that equipment swag, just the left sleep. I was like, man,
- 24:57Speaker 6: can I get some receiving gloves? Then like, well, no, Camp.
- 25:01Speaker 4: I find it very hard to believe that that's true.
- 25:04Speaker 5: He does not have receiving gloves.
- 25:05Speaker 4: I find that very hard to believe.
- 25:07Speaker 5: I said, no, learn to catch bare hands.
- 25:09Speaker 4: Why you don't do it in the games. Why would
- 25:11Speaker 4: you learn to do that and then in the games
- 25:12Speaker 4: you do something different.
- 25:16Speaker 5: You got you got some real ungritty takes gloves. The
- 25:23Speaker 5: guy that might preaches grit.
- 25:26Speaker 4: I still don't get it. Gloves are not great, like
- 25:27Speaker 4: you're ungritty if you wear gloves. Everybody wears gloves, not
- 25:31Speaker 4: Dallas Clark.
- 25:33Speaker 5: H Dallas Clark. Uh. Also, everybody learns how to catch
- 25:38Speaker 5: bare handed first.
- 25:42Speaker 4: I guess still today they do anything.
- 25:49Speaker 5: Yep, I don't know.
- 25:55Speaker 4: I just want some gloves.
- 25:56Speaker 5: Man, are you getting advisor next or too? Yeah? You
- 26:01Speaker 5: earned it.
- 26:03Speaker 4: Plus he didn't wear helmet places flag football. We just
- 26:06Speaker 4: got our new first helmet in recently, but that went great.
- 26:12Speaker 5: The pretty liked these days.
- 26:14Speaker 6: They got these new helmets that came out. I think
- 26:16Speaker 6: they're coming out this year. It's like new regulations.
- 26:20Speaker 5: I don't know. I've learned a lot about helmets in
- 26:22Speaker 5: the last month, but like.
- 26:23Speaker 6: New regulations or something for the youth helmets, and they
- 26:25Speaker 6: are like substantially lighter.
- 26:28Speaker 4: Yeah, it was never really the weight. It was always
- 26:32Speaker 4: the old forehead they got.
- 26:34Speaker 6: Yeah, the old foam that didn't like the took a
- 26:37Speaker 6: well to form to your head.
- 26:39Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 26:39Speaker 4: I had forever Peyton manning forehead in college. Not the
- 26:44Speaker 4: size of it, but the red mark.
- 26:46Speaker 6: Yeah, it's like, you know what, guy, It's like, I
- 26:49Speaker 6: don't need to break a new one in every year.
- 26:51Speaker 5: Can we just reuse the pad we used last year? Yeah?
- 26:55Speaker 6: I remember they had to put like second skin on
- 26:57Speaker 6: the spot because it was it was they had read
- 26:59Speaker 6: the skin off and it was like a open wound
- 27:02Speaker 6: that was bleeding on the forehead. So to put like
- 27:05Speaker 6: this like gel stuff over it that they called second skin.
- 27:08Speaker 5: I don't know, this is pretty bad. It didn't really
- 27:12Speaker 5: work because my brain's so big.
- 27:15Speaker 4: Uh So have you made Huck wear the helmet around?
- 27:19Speaker 5: I just wanted a little bit.
- 27:20Speaker 6: Yeah, yep, you know the first time you put a
- 27:23Speaker 6: helmet on. I got to tell him, like, hey, when
- 27:26Speaker 6: you wear equipment like you wear a helmet, it's it's
- 27:30Speaker 6: not gonna be comfortable.
- 27:31Speaker 5: No, that's what I got.
- 27:33Speaker 6: Like everybody when you when you got kids playing that
- 27:37Speaker 6: they are going to complain. It's not like wearing a
- 27:39Speaker 6: helmet is not a comfortable thing.
- 27:44Speaker 4: Remember when I think it was Jackson at first started playing.
- 27:47Speaker 4: I came home one night and Katie had on the
- 27:50Speaker 4: U high helmet.
- 27:56Speaker 6: Like straight up like the pads and the helmets these days,
- 27:59Speaker 6: I mean there's no I mean yeah, you got to
- 28:01Speaker 6: break him in. You gotta like soft them up a
- 28:03Speaker 6: little bit. But they they're way better than the old
- 28:06Speaker 6: old school phone.
- 28:07Speaker 7: Did the shut when I was uh? When I was
- 28:10Speaker 7: growing up, hey did it had the Uh? So we
- 28:12Speaker 7: drove all around bad Rouge when I was young and
- 28:14Speaker 7: got the Adams brand helmet and that was a game
- 28:17Speaker 7: changer because it was super soft in it and uh,
- 28:20Speaker 7: I were that three years elementary.
- 28:22Speaker 5: Nice.
- 28:23Speaker 4: I could not tell you what brand the helmet was
- 28:26Speaker 4: that I wore. Probably, I don't know. Do we have
- 28:30Speaker 4: ride els back then?
- 28:31Speaker 5: You probably no idea. I don't know.
- 28:34Speaker 7: Probably Devis had been around for a little while when
- 28:36Speaker 7: I started playing.
- 28:37Speaker 6: So probably probably so that remember seventh grade, that was
- 28:40Speaker 6: our first like school year to play to play football
- 28:44Speaker 6: is seventh grade, and everyone had the T bowned face mask.
- 28:46Speaker 7: Maybe high school everybody wanted the Revo speed they called it.
- 28:50Speaker 4: With the speed, you had the T bar face mask.
- 28:54Speaker 4: Everybody did. Seventh grade, we had the We had two options.
- 28:58Speaker 4: You had the T bar or you had the quarterback
- 29:00Speaker 4: face mask. Okay, you know like this is a standard
- 29:03Speaker 4: court like you wore in college.
- 29:05Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, that was it. That was your two two
- 29:07Speaker 5: on the top on the bottom. Yeah, that was it.
- 29:10Speaker 4: And later on, you know, as you got older, then
- 29:14Speaker 4: you had the access to the Dion bars. See.
- 29:17Speaker 6: That was for the one guy that hit puberty too early. Yeah,
- 29:21Speaker 6: that was for that guy in middle school, the guy
- 29:24Speaker 6: that scored, you know, five touchdowns a game in seventh
- 29:27Speaker 6: and eighth grade, made every tackle, but didn't play down
- 29:32Speaker 6: in high school.
- 29:34Speaker 5: That was for that guy.
- 29:36Speaker 7: He was a warrior in middle school.
- 29:38Speaker 5: Warrior. I mean, he's the guy.
- 29:39Speaker 6: He had a little he had a little fuzz on
- 29:41Speaker 6: his upper lip, no doubt. Everybody else was like, I'm
- 29:45Speaker 6: a real boy.
- 29:46Speaker 5: Yeah, he's like, hey, what's up? Yeah, he's the one scoring.
- 29:49Speaker 5: Give that guy the ball. God just blessed you a
- 29:53Speaker 5: little bit earlier than everybody.
- 29:54Speaker 4: But you do have there a laundri what's up, homie?
- 30:00Speaker 7: What play?
- 30:01Speaker 4: What you get going on over there?
- 30:03Speaker 5: Not much?
- 30:04Speaker 4: Just scrolling, scrolling.
- 30:06Speaker 8: I have nothing to contribute to this.
- 30:08Speaker 5: You don't.
- 30:09Speaker 4: You didn't wear a helmet, not a football helmet. Did
- 30:13Speaker 4: you have to have bars in your softball helmet?
- 30:15Speaker 8: We used to not have to wear a mask, and
- 30:17Speaker 8: then they changed the rules and you had to.
- 30:21Speaker 5: We had That's a good change, right.
- 30:23Speaker 8: Yeah, I think so. I don't think you have to
- 30:25Speaker 8: in college though I see girls not wearing face masks,
- 30:29Speaker 8: but like in high school and Little League and select
- 30:32Speaker 8: you had to.
- 30:32Speaker 4: You didn't high school, but we did in Dixie youth
- 30:35Speaker 4: baseball like something really like their face crushed. Sure, so
- 30:38Speaker 4: we had to start wearing the cage in baseball.
- 30:40Speaker 5: Yeah that pictures in softball wear them.
- 30:43Speaker 8: Right, it's optional, but yeah, they'll wear thea. I used
- 30:46Speaker 8: to just wear a like a mouth guard. Some of
- 30:49Speaker 8: us would just wear like a mouth guard.
- 30:52Speaker 4: Especially on one side. Right, Yeah, like just well.
- 30:56Speaker 8: Like I like just a straight up mouthpiece, like some
- 31:00Speaker 8: of us would just wear that, so our teeth wouldn't.
- 31:02Speaker 5: Yeah, okay, yeah, gotcha. Hm, we didn't.
- 31:08Speaker 7: We didn't do the cage bat and helmets, but I
- 31:11Speaker 7: mean a couple of people had it, but like they
- 31:12Speaker 7: were not required.
- 31:13Speaker 4: Yeah, I think just like literally like our Dixie Youth
- 31:18Speaker 4: and shree board had some kid get like their face
- 31:20Speaker 4: like crushed and they started on walker.
- 31:23Speaker 7: We didn't have a ton teeth anyways, they were like,
- 31:25Speaker 7: you know what, who cares if you guys get hit
- 31:26Speaker 7: in the face.
- 31:28Speaker 6: There's a kid in literally growing up pitched and like
- 31:32Speaker 6: a pitching, you know, mechanics or mechanics when your kids,
- 31:35Speaker 6: Like he would pitch, he like turn his whole.
- 31:36Speaker 5: Body all the way around.
- 31:38Speaker 6: Somebody hit a line drive up the middle hard, crushed
- 31:41Speaker 6: it and turned his head, hit him in the back
- 31:43Speaker 6: of the head and it.
- 31:44Speaker 5: Like exploded his That's insane, cool, tough luck.
- 31:51Speaker 4: Now.
- 31:51Speaker 8: I will say one time I made the mistake of
- 31:54Speaker 8: warming our picture up with no gear on, like a
- 31:58Speaker 8: zero gear, not even a face mask, and uh, I
- 32:04Speaker 8: had four stitches right here. I still have the scar
- 32:07Speaker 8: busted my eyebrow open. And she was like, I think
- 32:10Speaker 8: you need to go to the emergency room. And I
- 32:12Speaker 8: was like, no, I think it's probably fine, Like yeah,
- 32:15Speaker 8: it's okay. Then I looked in the mirror and my
- 32:18Speaker 8: face was like, oh yeah, there was a hole in
- 32:23Speaker 8: my eyebrow. And I was like, oh yeah, maybe it
- 32:27Speaker 8: was a drop ball that dropped a line and I
- 32:30Speaker 8: went to pick it and it bounced off the ground
- 32:34Speaker 8: and then.
- 32:34Speaker 5: It went up. You can't be picking it with no
- 32:38Speaker 5: gear on.
- 32:40Speaker 8: You shouldn't be warming anybody up with no gear on.
- 32:42Speaker 4: I don't know why. Like as a coach, like we'll
- 32:45Speaker 4: try to go out there and we'll try to moarm
- 32:46Speaker 4: up the picture. So the kid catcher can, you know,
- 32:48Speaker 4: go get a drink of water or whatever in between innings,
- 32:51Speaker 4: and you know, you get one of those low ones
- 32:54Speaker 4: and it's like instinct to try to go black. And
- 32:56Speaker 4: you're like, I'm also forty one years old if I
- 32:58Speaker 4: don't really know how it's going to turn out, So
- 33:02Speaker 4: you gonna make decisions out there.
- 33:04Speaker 6: Oh man, look, we got a replay of Oklahoma South
- 33:06Speaker 6: Carolina from last year. South Carolina into the first quarter,
- 33:10Speaker 6: Leonora sellers no points yet what he just got sacked.
- 33:14Speaker 4: But I was told yesterday emphatically that he was the
- 33:18Speaker 4: best in the country by Marlar.
- 33:20Speaker 6: Like, okay, I get it. There's a lot of teams
- 33:21Speaker 6: that don't score in the first quarter. It's you know,
- 33:23Speaker 6: it's not easy to score points. Like with the enthusiasm
- 33:28Speaker 6: that Marlar had for Leonoris, I would assume they scored
- 33:31Speaker 6: twenty points a quarter.
- 33:32Speaker 7: Well, he's he's getting right better, right mat Yeah.
- 33:36Speaker 4: Well, I mean when I said it feels like he's
- 33:38Speaker 4: been in college for seventeen years, and Maler's like, we what,
- 33:41Speaker 4: like he just got there. I'm like, no, it feels
- 33:43Speaker 4: like he's been there.
- 33:44Speaker 7: For you know it feels like it, uh complete a
- 33:46Speaker 7: percentage of last year five percent lower than twenty four
- 33:51Speaker 7: five less touchdown passes and threw more picks. What that
- 33:55Speaker 7: doesn't That sounds like a regression to me?
- 33:58Speaker 6: He thought it was the dumbest question everyone. I said,
- 34:01Speaker 6: who would you rather take? Leonora's or Rattler? Was like,
- 34:04Speaker 6: legitimately good for them? I get it, like we we we.
- 34:08Speaker 5: Give Ratler a lot of credit, probably you know, more
- 34:11Speaker 5: than any show. But he was like objectively good at
- 34:17Speaker 5: South Carolina.
- 34:18Speaker 7: Rattler through Fervor. I'm looking at it right now through
- 34:20Speaker 7: forver three thousand yards back to back seasons at South Carolina,
- 34:24Speaker 7: Lenora Sellers. Has he yet to throw for twenty six
- 34:26Speaker 7: hundred in a season?
- 34:28Speaker 5: I mean like.
- 34:29Speaker 4: Yesterday by Lockdow on COXI. That's not real.
- 34:32Speaker 7: Yeah, that's he completed sixty nine percent of his passes
- 34:36Speaker 7: his senior year.
- 34:37Speaker 5: You can't trust facts, Taylor. You know that.
- 34:41Speaker 4: All right, We'll take a break more OTB when we

- 38:11Speaker 5: On no on my way back, on my way to Tampa.
- 38:15Speaker 4: You went, you were somewhere last year? What was your

- 39:03Speaker 5: We didn't.
- 39:04Speaker 6: I mean, maybe it'll be a little different this year
- 39:06Speaker 6: because I don't know, maybe being on the East coast
- 39:10Speaker 6: it'll be a bit later. Well, no, it was last
