Latest / Sidekick's What Just Shipped / HubSpot date rules allow today: same-day entries stop failing | Shipped Oct 2026
Transcript
- Rob (AI host): If your date rule blocks the past, it can also block today, so your rep's same-day entry gets stuck. Dana (AI host): HubSpot added an Allow today checkbox to two of its date validation rules. Rob (AI host): Turning it on is a single click, but a few limits decide where the rule actually holds. Narrator (AI voice): This is Sidekick's What Just Shipped, presented by Sidekick Strategies. Narrator (AI voice): Your hosts, Rob and Dana, are AI. Narrator (AI voice): The voices are synthetic, the research is real, and humans check every claim before it reaches you. Rob (AI host): Rob with you, Dana is here too, and we are both AI hosts. Rob (AI host): This one comes from HubSpot's October product updates roundup and its property validation help article. Dana (AI host): Glad to be here, and today I'm playing a hypothetical ops admin who owns a contract start date property. Rob (AI host): Why it matters: date rules cut errors at entry and cleanup later, but only when they accept the dates people actually need. Dana (AI host): Start with what the rules did before. Rob (AI host): With Future dates only, users cannot enter today's date or dates in the past. Rob (AI host): With Past dates only, users cannot enter today's date or dates in the future. Dana (AI host): So today was off limits both ways. Rob (AI host): Right. Rob (AI host): Now, after you select Any future date or Past dates only, you can select the Allow today checkbox, and users can pick today's date. Dana (AI host): And the plan requirements? Rob (AI host): HubSpot's roundup lists date validation for all hubs and tiers, filed under data quality. Dana (AI host): And with no rule at all? Rob (AI host): The default is Any date, so users can enter any date in the past or future. Rob (AI host): The limits start when you pick another option. Dana (AI host): And who is allowed to change the rules? Rob (AI host): Anyone with Edit property settings permissions. Dana (AI host): Walk me to the setting. Rob (AI host): Click the settings icon, then go to Properties in the left sidebar. Rob (AI host): Choose the object from the Select an object dropdown, click the property's name, and open the Rules tab. Dana (AI host): Which field types take rules? Rob (AI host): Single line text, multi-line text, date picker, date and time picker, phone number, and number fields. Dana (AI host): What do the other types get? Rob (AI host): Text rules cover spaces, minimum or maximum characters, and allowed characters, like numbers only. Rob (AI host): Number rules set a minimum value, a maximum value, and decimal places. Dana (AI host): Give me HubSpot's own example of a rule. Rob (AI host): HubSpot describes an Order Number text property that accepts only numeric characters. Dana (AI host): And unique values? Rob (AI host): Text, phone, and number properties can require unique values, with up to ten unique value properties per object, set only when the property is created. Dana (AI host): And phone numbers? Rob (AI host): A phone number property can turn on automatic formatting validation, and optionally set a default country code. Dana (AI host): Anything that cleans input as people type? Rob (AI host): Automatically remove disallowed characters. Rob (AI host): It strips them as they are entered, so a disallowed character typed into a name just disappears. Dana (AI host): And regex? Rob (AI host): Custom regex rules on text properties need a Professional or Enterprise subscription. Dana (AI host): And "today" is measured where, exactly? Rob (AI host): In your account's timezone. Rob (AI host): HubSpot sets the allowed dates for a date property based on that setting. Dana (AI host): Good catch for teams spread across regions. Rob (AI host): Future dates only has three choices: Any future date, any date after a buffer time, or any date in a rolling date range. Dana (AI host): And the buffer and rolling choices take a number? Rob (AI host): Yes, you enter the number of days where it applies. Rob (AI host): HubSpot's steps tie the Allow today checkbox to Any future date and Past dates only. Dana (AI host): Any other date rules on that tab? Rob (AI host): There are. Rob (AI host): A specific date range, where you enter a beginning and an end date, and Allow Monday through Friday only, which blocks weekend dates. Dana (AI host): In this made-up setup, a contract start date must be today or later, since a contract can start the same day a deal closes. Rob (AI host): Then pick Future dates only, choose Any future date, and select the Allow today checkbox. Rob (AI host): Click Save when you finish. Dana (AI host): Where does the rule apply once it is saved? Rob (AI host): When values are entered on desktop, in the HubSpot mobile app, or through an import. Dana (AI host): And forms? Rob (AI host): Submissions to forms built in the updated form editor follow the rule. George B. Thomas (AI voice clone): Hey, it's George B. Thomas from Sidekick Strategies. George B. Thomas (AI voice clone): Full honesty, this is my AI voice clone, made with my permission. George B. Thomas (AI voice clone): A consent switch reaches into workflows, segments, and reports that somebody built years ago. George B. Thomas (AI voice clone): Sidekick's HubSpot portal audit reviews every workflow, property, automation, pipeline, report, and integration, then ranks what to fix by business impact. George B. Thomas (AI voice clone): Start with what's safe to touch. George B. Thomas (AI voice clone): You'll find HubSpot Portal Audit on the services page at Sidekick Strategies dot com. Dana (AI host): Now the gaps. Where does the rule not hold, even after you save it? Rob (AI host): Workflows, chatflows, submissions to meeting scheduling pages, and forms created with the legacy editor. Rob (AI host): None of those enforce validation rules. Dana (AI host): So a workflow can still stamp yesterday into that property. Rob (AI host): HubSpot lists workflows as not enforced, so plan for that. Dana (AI host): And records that already hold a value? Rob (AI host): Existing values are not retroactively formatted. The rule checks new edits and imports. Dana (AI host): So a big import of old dates hits the rule too. Rob (AI host): Yes, imports are covered, so review the file's dates before you load it. Dana (AI host): Our research says the change applies immediately to any record where the property appears. Rob (AI host): Here's what we couldn't confirm: that saved rules reach existing values. Rob (AI host): HubSpot's help says existing values stay as they are. Dana (AI host): It also says the setting carries over to forms and workflow triggers. Rob (AI host): HubSpot lists updated-editor forms as enforced, and workflows and legacy forms as not enforced. Dana (AI host): And it suggests starting with deal close dates. Rob (AI host): HubSpot's list of default properties that take validation rules has no date properties, so test that one on a custom date property first, before you change a live rule. Dana (AI host): Fair enough, a test property it is, then. Rob (AI host): Here is a plan for this week. Rob (AI host): Monday, list every date property set to Past dates only or to Any future date. Dana (AI host): Next, decide for each one whether today should count, and select Allow today where the answer is yes. Rob (AI host): Then click Save, open a test record, and enter today's date to confirm the rule accepts it. Dana (AI host): After that, check which of your forms still use the legacy editor, because those submissions skip the rule. Rob (AI host): Finally, review workflows that set those dates, since workflows are not held to the rule. Dana (AI host): Ops admin verdict: turn on Allow today wherever same-day entries are normal, and audit the workflows and legacy forms that skip the check. Rob (AI host): Today counts now, if you let it. Dana (AI host): All of our sources are linked in the show notes, and more HubSpot updates live at Sidekick Strategies dot com.
