Latest / Mini Scroll / MINI SCROLL: Aussie brand's viral AI slop, Bretman Rock vs. Vanessa Hudgens + "toxic" celebrity mom group saga
Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:05culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:08media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:11through Thursday and sometimes Fridays like today.
- 0:14I'm your host, Lauren Meisner, the founder of the youth digital
- 0:18media brand Centennial World. Welcome back to Mini Scroll,
- 0:22everyone, a Friday mini scroll. Let's just get into the stories
- 0:27for today. This is a weird 1 today.
- 0:30OK, I feel like sometimes the Friday mini scroll the vibes are
- 0:33weird and my first story that I have for you guys is the
- 0:37weirdest story I have possibly maybe not ever reported on, but
- 0:40it's up there. It's so fucking weird.
- 0:42OK so this Australian brand called called Genes W is going
- 0:46viral for basically becoming 100% AI slob.
- 0:51If you're Australian, I'm sure you guys will be familiar with
- 0:54Genes. WI was not Obviously I've lived
- 0:57here for almost 10 years but I wasn't familiar with it.
- 0:59However, I did ask a bunch of my Australian friends if they knew
- 1:02what they all did. They all said it was like a
- 1:04staple brand for them growing up.
- 1:06One of my friends actually described them as a brand that
- 1:09rich kids wore growing up. I don't know if that's totally
- 1:11accurate. If you guys are Australian,
- 1:13please let me know what you guys think about that.
- 1:15But yes, they are this Australian brand.
- 1:17Like I said, they were kind of a staple, I guess in the 2000s,
- 1:20twenty 10s. They've been around since the
- 1:2270s apparently and they are going viral all over Reddit and
- 1:26now also TikTok because they relaunched a few months ago.
- 1:30I'll explain it, but they relaunched a few months ago and
- 1:33their entire website and social media presence now appears to be
- 1:38almost exclusively AI slop. So last March, the brand went
- 1:42into administration and then in September 2025, a few months
- 1:47later, they sent emails out to their database.
- 1:50And these emails looked like spam.
- 1:52You can actually find them on Reddit.
- 1:53I'll put a screenshot here. They looked like spam saying
- 1:56that they were returning as online only.
- 1:59So the e-mail said, we've missed you.
- 2:01Classic jeans W favorites are back online September 25th.
- 2:05Dear jeans W customer. Oh, that's nice and personal.
- 2:09I think that's definitely really good e-mail marketing protocol.
- 2:13Thank you for your continued support and loyalty.
- 2:16We're excited to announce that Jeans W is officially reopening
- 2:19online on September 25, and we're bringing back your classic
- 2:22favorites from the comfort of your home.
- 2:24You can now rediscover the timeless pieces you love.
- 2:28And the text literally has like 4 spaces between each word.
- 2:32So at the time, this is what the Australian Financial Review
- 2:35wrote. Jeans W will emerge from
- 2:37voluntary administration and be handed back to its former
- 2:40owners, the wealthy young family from Hong Kong, in a deal that
- 2:44leaves unsecured creditors with virtually no payout.
- 2:47The denim and casual wear retailer, which opened its first
- 2:50store more than 5 decades ago, collapsed in March and flagged
- 2:54the closure of more than 90 shops.
- 2:57All right, so it seems like since they relaunched online,
- 3:00things do not seem to be going well inside the brand because
- 3:05there is like no human touch to this brand right now.
- 3:08It seems like they might have like one single staff working on
- 3:11it. So this Reddit thread popped up
- 3:14yesterday in our slash oz female fashion and it's titled What is
- 3:18going on with jeans W AI posts. And the post details how the
- 3:23website and social content appears to be almost 100% AI
- 3:26slop and basically nothing makes sense.
- 3:29And this has kicked off so much discourse.
- 3:31People are going on deep dives. People are posting about this on
- 3:34TikTok now reacting to it. It's so funny.
- 3:37I mean it's like a sad OK, but we have to laugh.
- 3:40If we don't laugh, we will cry. So we have to laugh because it's
- 3:43actually insane. Let me share.
- 3:46You guys can go on the website. If you go on jeanswest.com dot
- 3:48AU you guys will see OK already. It's like the worst website
- 3:52you've ever seen. It is like 2005 level website.
- 3:56OK. If you click on the about us
- 3:57page at the top you will see a photo of a man and a woman.
- 4:02It's obviously AI generated. OK.
- 4:04A man and a woman holding hands wearing Canadian tuxedos,
- 4:08essentially with what appears to be a collaboration between the
- 4:14Sydney Opera House and Uluru in the background.
- 4:18And people on Reddit are calling it the Ulurupa House.
- 4:22And then if you zoom into the photo, you'll see the classic
- 4:25hands, the classic AI hands. These people, they're trying to
- 4:29get them to hold hands and like, AI just can't do it.
- 4:31Like the hands are just mush. They're just AI swap.
- 4:35If you go back to the homepage, Scroll down again, all the
- 4:38copywriting, none of it makes sense.
- 4:40It's all so bad. The photos are all AI and just
- 4:42so bad. OK.
- 4:43And then one of my favorite parts of the homepage is on one
- 4:46of the carousels, one of the images that shows up is like a
- 4:49woman standing on the beach. Okay.
- 4:50And then the text says make a splash.
- 4:53Gene Times is here. The perfect match.
- 4:56Denim jeans time is here. Jeans time is here is one of the
- 5:01craziest things I've ever seen on a brands website.
- 5:06I know, and that's saying something, but that's so funny.
- 5:08I was saying to Sean, like every time I put on jeans now, which
- 5:10is like almost every day, I'm going to be like jeans time is
- 5:13here. Like that's crazy.
- 5:14What are you talking about? What does that mean?
- 5:16OK. And then if you keep scrolling,
- 5:18there's another carousel of AI generated photos of models like
- 5:23in various landscapes. OK, so there's one, she's in a
- 5:27field and it says escape the everyday authenticity.
- 5:33Escape the everyday authenticity.
- 5:36What does that mean? So the website is a freaking
- 5:39disaster. But the social media, their
- 5:41Instagram is even worse. I would argue again, it's all
- 5:45just like stock photos of like AI models.
- 5:48They do have some videos that appear to be influencers and
- 5:52they appear to possibly be real, but I really can't tell.
- 5:55And I don't know how old they are.
- 5:56Like, who knows? They could be assets that were
- 5:59made for the brand by like an influencer, a fashion blog or
- 6:01whatever, like years ago when the brand was doing like normal
- 6:05things. But the craziest thing, you guys
- 6:07have to see this. OK, let me play the clip for
- 6:09you. But for those who can't see it,
- 6:10it's an AI generated social media video.
- 6:13OK? It's like second on their feed
- 6:15right now, it's two blonde women wearing the exact same outfit at
- 6:20a cafe. I think they're supposed to be
- 6:22like going out for coffee. But the first segment or like
- 6:25the first scene is them holding take away cups, like take away
- 6:29coffee cups, looking at a menu. OK.
- 6:31And then they're inside the cafe, arms around each other
- 6:34again, fully matching. And then they're like looking
- 6:37out the window and pointing to something in unison.
- 6:40And then they sit down for a coffee at this cafe and they're
- 6:44holding mugs. So I don't know what happened to
- 6:46their take away coffees, but they're having their coffee
- 6:48there now. OK, but then the craziest thing
- 6:53ever happens. You have to watch this video
- 6:56with sound. Just listen.
- 7:00A warm cozy. Australian cafe atmosphere with.
- 7:06Relaxed Indies folk vibes, you guys.
- 7:11That is just the AI prompt that they put into the software to
- 7:15make this video and then the AI spit out this video and use the
- 7:20prompts as the lyrics. And then whoever posted this
- 7:23video, whoever is in charge of their social media, just
- 7:26obviously didn't watch it or didn't care and just posted it
- 7:29to their official Instagram page.
- 7:32I'm losing my mind. It's so crazy.
- 7:35I literally had tears running down my face when I was looking
- 7:40into all of this earlier today. It's so insane.
- 7:44I don't understand what's happening.
- 7:46Like it's so wild that it feels like a troll.
- 7:49I think. It's not Like I genuinely think
- 7:52that this is just so clearly like a shell of a company that
- 7:55is trying to just sell whatever they can for the cheapest way
- 7:59possible. And having like one employee at
- 8:02the most doing all of these things that they have to do is
- 8:06possibly the result of that. I don't really know.
- 8:08They've probably been told to use AI for everything to cut
- 8:11costs. Like, I don't know, that's all I
- 8:13can imagine. People are all in the comments
- 8:16being like, there's still time to delete this.
- 8:17There's also a lot of people who are really, really pissed.
- 8:20There's a ton of people that are like, this is so disgusting.
- 8:23This is so egregious. Like, I'm never gonna buy from
- 8:26you again. And it's like, well, yeah,
- 8:27obviously you're not even. What are they even selling at
- 8:30this point? It's like, we don't even know.
- 8:32We don't even know because I haven't seen a real item of
- 8:35clothing on their website or on their social media since they
- 8:39relaunched in September. We need to see the humor in
- 8:42this. Like it's so sad.
- 8:44I just, I cannot believe that this is where we're at, but we
- 8:47need to laugh because it's so, so bad.
- 8:49Like this is literally next level to the point where it
- 8:52feels like a troll. I kind of hope it's a troll.
- 8:56It's weird because there are still a lot of people on
- 8:58LinkedIn who say they work there.
- 9:00But like, surely not. Surely this is not the work of a
- 9:04human marketing team with multiple employees.
- 9:08I don't know you guys, it's so wild.
- 9:11OK, let's get into the next story.
- 9:13The next story that I have for you guys is Brettman Rock has
- 9:17opened up about his most disappointing celebrity
- 9:20encounter ever and it started to go viral.
- 9:23So comments that influencer Brettman Rock made on a podcast
- 9:262 weeks ago are going around the Internet.
- 9:29I actually cannot remember the last time we talked about
- 9:31Brettman Rock. I love him.
- 9:34He's so funny and he does like wealthy influencer so well.
- 9:39Like living between. Actually don't even know if he
- 9:40lives between LA and Hawaii anymore, if he just like
- 9:43permanently lives on Hawaii. But you know, just like his
- 9:47life. I'm sure you guys have seen his
- 9:48videos, but his life in Hawaii is so magical.
- 9:52He's doing it so well. He is touching grass.
- 9:55That is a man who is touching grass.
- 9:57OK, so he was on the Sweet or Savory podcast a couple weeks
- 10:00ago and he was asked to talk about memorable run insurance
- 10:03with other famous people. And then he was asked about his
- 10:05least favorite run in with a celebrity and he named Vanessa
- 10:10Hudgens. So he said that they met at
- 10:12Coachella years ago when they were both attending for Sugar
- 10:16Bear Hair. Iconic.
- 10:18Take me back to the days of Sugar Bear Hair sponsoring every
- 10:22single YouTube video, celebrity Snapchat.
- 10:25Iconic. So he says while he was picking
- 10:28up his festival ticket, he spotted Vanessa Hudgens talking
- 10:30to the Sugar Bear Hair CEO, which is somebody that Bretman
- 10:33already knew. So he said he tried to wave to
- 10:36the CEO, but claims that Vanessa looked right at him and then
- 10:39acted like she didn't want to be seen, kind of like hid behind
- 10:42her assistant. And Bretman was like, I wasn't
- 10:44trying to say hi to her. Like I'm just trying to get the
- 10:46attention the Sugar Bear hair CEO who I know.
- 10:50And then he joked that he's been always team Shar Pei.
- 10:54Most disappointing celebrity encounter?
- 10:56Vanessa Hudgens. Oh.
- 10:59I don't like her. I met her at Coachella.
- 11:01We were both there for Sugar Bear hair.
- 11:03This was like young me. I'm not a fan.
- 11:05She had a second person there. And she grabs her hand and makes
- 11:08her stand in front of her, like to kind of like block, block
- 11:10her. Because at that point, like, I
- 11:11was walking towards them to say hi to the CEO of Sugar Bear.
- 11:14And that's why we're here. You're not above me.
- 11:17I'm not under you, I'm Filipino. You can't even like like your
- 11:20own. People seriously, that's yeah,
- 11:22that's like I know that Bretman just like gives no Fox, but I
- 11:25always find it really fascinating when people publicly
- 11:29speak about different celebrities and people that they
- 11:32haven't enjoyed meeting. I don't know, because I feel
- 11:35like, well, surely there's going to be a time when you're when
- 11:37you'll be in the same room with them again, like surely you will
- 11:40encounter these people again. And I feel like that's so bold.
- 11:43But honestly, like I said, Brett, my rock, he is touching
- 11:46grass like constantly. So maybe he just has no interest
- 11:49in celebrity life. I don't follow him like super
- 11:51closely anymore. So if you guys do let me know
- 11:54what you guys think about that. OK, the last story that I have
- 11:56for you guys, Speaking of Sharpei, I wasn't sure if I was
- 11:59going to cover this. It's a bit mainstream, I feel
- 12:02for many. Sometimes we cover mainstream,
- 12:04obviously, if it's like relevant, but it also feels like
- 12:06a little bit irrelevant. However, it is something that is
- 12:10so unavoidable right now and it feeds my millennial appetite for
- 12:14like, petty celebrity drama. So here we go.
- 12:18Ashley Tisdale. She wrote a viral personal essay
- 12:22titled Breaking Up with My Toxic Mom Group and it is everywhere.
- 12:26And it sparked all of this drama all over, I mean, the Internet.
- 12:30Then also it seems like within Hollywood.
- 12:32So it was actually originally published on her blog back in
- 12:35November, and then this week it was published again in The Cut.
- 12:39In this essay, she described joining a group of fellow
- 12:42celebrity moms after having her first child.
- 12:45She said that she thought that this space would be supportive.
- 12:48But overtime, she said, the group's behavior started to feel
- 12:50exclusionary and high school like with social gatherings and
- 12:53text threads that left her out. So she eventually told them via
- 12:57text that she was done because it felt unhealthy.
- 13:01She said she didn't feel like the other moms were bad people,
- 13:03but that the social dynamic stopped feeling healthy and
- 13:06supportive of her. So this drummed up a lot of
- 13:08interest, partly because I think the idea of like mom groups and
- 13:12friendships like that, I'm sure it hits close to home for a lot
- 13:16of women, especially first time moms.
- 13:18But also of course, the celebrity element of it.
- 13:20Everybody's like, who the fuck was in this group?
- 13:23So people did some sleuthing and they found lots of photos of
- 13:26Ashley Tisdale alongside Hilary Duff, Mandy Moore, Meghan
- 13:30Trainer and others. And they're wearing like,
- 13:33matching sweat suits. They're hanging out a lot.
- 13:35So it seems as though this is probably the group she was
- 13:38talking about. But then it escalated when
- 13:41Hilary Duff's husband, Matthew Coma posted this wild troll on
- 13:45his Instagram stories that seemed to mock her essay.
- 13:48So this is from People quote. Although Moore and Duff have yet
- 13:52to respond, Duff's husband Matthew Coma seemingly responded
- 13:55by posting a photo of himself in the same position as the photo
- 13:58of Tisdale for her story with the Cut.
- 14:01In the picture, he was seen sitting on a couch next to a
- 14:04house plant while wearing an all black outfit paired with rose
- 14:07tinted sunglasses. On his Instagram Stories on
- 14:09January 6th, Coma added the cuts logo and a fictional headline to
- 14:13the photo, which read. When you're the most self
- 14:16obsessed, tone deaf person on earth, Other moms tend to shift
- 14:20focus to their actual toddlers with a sub headline that read a
- 14:24mom group tell all through a father's eyes and then he wrote.
- 14:29Read my interview with at the Cut on the story.
- 14:33That is so savage. I actually didn't know this
- 14:37about him, but apparently he's like a huge troll and that's
- 14:39actually why people love him. Apparently he's like the
- 14:42internet's biggest troll. I do feel like the whole
- 14:46scenario, like the essay and everything does give off a bit
- 14:49like self indulgent, self-centered, but also like
- 14:51that's what I expect from a celebrity.
- 14:53Like, that's what I want from my celebrities.
- 14:55So, you know, I can't fault Ashley Tisdale.
- 14:58So now Meghan trainer has also responded again.
- 15:01She was apparently part of this mom group.
- 15:03So she posted a TikTok on her computer looking at the screen,
- 15:07shocked with the caption me finding out about the apparent
- 15:10mom group drama. And then the video was set to
- 15:13her new single. Still don't care and she put
- 15:15like tea emojis or like coffee emojis obviously to signal tea
- 15:19hashtag. Still don't care.
- 15:20You know what I'm absolutely desperate to know?
- 15:23Speaking of Hilary Duff and drama, this is kind of an aside,
- 15:26but I need to know what happened with Haley Duff, her sister.
- 15:31It seems like they are not friendly with each other at all.
- 15:34If you guys know, please let me know.
- 15:35I feel like I have kept tabs on that here and there, but maybe
- 15:38there's things that I've missed. Please, I need to know what
- 15:42happened. I feel like they have different
- 15:43political beliefs, affiliations. It seems I've seen that
- 15:47speculation somewhere. But I need to know.
- 15:50Like they were sisters. They had such a career together
- 15:53for a long time there and then now it seems like they don't
- 15:56interact at all. And there's a few tik tokers
- 15:58that have done some like deep dives into when they last
- 16:01basically like interacted on social media and like what
- 16:04possibly happened with them. But like I need to know.
- 16:06I need to know. I understand we probably will
- 16:08never know. It is very personal family
- 16:10information, but I still want to know.
- 16:12It doesn't stop me from being curious and desperate to know.
- 16:16All right guys, well, that's it for mini scroll today.
- 16:18I don't know what to say about today's episode.
- 16:20It was really random, but you know what, sometimes that's just
- 16:22what happens with a Friday mini. Anyways, I love you guys.
- 16:25Thank you so much for listening. Please remember to rate, review
- 16:27and subscribe. I love you and I will talk to
- 16:30you guys on Monday. Bye.
