  launch of Muslim American Heritage Month, one of those

  sites being the One World Trade Center.

  The green lighting was chosen because green is typically

  associated with the religion of Islam.

  For some people, especially the families that were affected by

  911, that symbolism felt like a slap in the face.

  And you want to know where I was during 9/11?

  I was in a Muslim private school with a hijab on my head, and we

  had to evacuate because people were calling the school and

  threatening to. You know what?

  I can't even imagine what the families of the victims of 9/11

  must have felt when they walked by the One World Trade Center

  and it was lit up green for the launch of Muslim American
• 1:41
  Heritage Month. What?

  And now we see a video circulating online of the

  mayor's first Jumal prayer as mayor, and this verse is

  recited. What's going on?

  As an Arabic speaker who can read Arabic, I can confirm to

  you that that is indeed what that verse translates to.

  Other passages that are often discussed alongside this one is

  Surah 9, verse 29. This verse speaks about fighting

  opposing groups until they submit to a political authority

  and pay a tax. That's called the jizya, and the

  jizya is meant to subdue and humiliate them.

  symbolism, context, and how historical religious texts are
