- 0:01Ezekiel chapter 19 Dear Lord, please be with us as we read
- 0:05through this chapter. Open our eyes, our ears, our
- 0:08hearts to what you have to say. We ask this in Jesus name.
- 0:12This chapter is called a lament over Israel's Princess.
- 0:17Take up a lament concerning the Princess of Israel and say what
- 0:21a lioness was your mother among the lions.
- 0:24She lay down among them and reared her Cubs.
- 0:27She brought up one of her Cubs and he became a strong lion.
- 0:32He learned to tear the prey and he became a man eater.
- 0:36The nation's heard about him and he was trapped in their pit.
- 0:39They led him with hooks to the land of Egypt.
- 0:42When she saw her hope unfulfilled, her expectation was
- 0:46gone. She took another of her Cubs and
- 0:49made him a strong lion. He prowled among the lions, for
- 0:53he was now a strong lion. He learned to tear the prey, and
- 0:57he became a man eater. He broke down their strongholds
- 1:02and devastated their towns. The land and all who were in it
- 1:05were terrified by his roaring. Then the nations came against
- 1:11him, those from regions round about.
- 1:14They spread their net for him, and he was trapped in their pit
- 1:18with hooks. They pulled him into a cage and
- 1:21brought him to the king of Babylon.
- 1:24They put him in prison, so his roar was heard no longer on the
- 1:28mountains of Israel. Your mother was like a vine in
- 1:33your vineyard. Planted by the water.
- 1:35It was fruitful and full of branches.
- 1:38Because of abundant water, its branches were strong, fit for a
- 1:42ruler sceptre. It towered high above the thick
- 1:45foliage, conspicuous for its height and for its many
- 1:49branches. But it was uprooted in fury and
- 1:53thrown down to the ground. The east wind made it shrivel,
- 1:57it was stripped of its fruit, its strong branches withered,
- 2:01and fire consumed them. Now it it is planted in the
- 2:06desert in a dry and thirsty land.
- 2:10Fire spread from one of its main branches and consumed its fruit.
- 2:14No strong branch is left on it fit for a ruler's scepter.
- 2:19This is a lament and is to be used as a lament.
- 2:25So the question that we would have, of course this is easy.
- 2:30He'll getting this from God about taking up a lament and
- 2:35being sad about what has come of Israel.
- 2:40You know, God, God made Israel to be pretty significant.
- 2:44I mean, he chose Israel, but then because of Israel's
- 2:48choices, things changed for the outcome of Israel, and I think
- 2:54that's what overall the lament is.
- 2:57This study Bible has some questions and answers, so I will
- 3:00read that. What is a lament?
- 3:03This suggests 2 ideas #1A musical or poetic dirge, a song
- 3:10of sorrow or two, a recognition of judgment, which seems to be
- 3:15primarily implied here. Who do the lioness and Cubs
- 3:19represent? The mother lioness represents
- 3:23either the nation of Judah or its capital Jerusalem.
- 3:28The first cub represents King Jehoiah has whom the Egyptian
- 3:33Pharaoh took captive in six O 9 BC and you can read about him
- 3:39being taken to Egypt in Second Kings chapter 23 verses 31
- 3:45through 35. The second, the second cub
- 3:50represents either King Jehovah Chin or more likely his
- 3:55successor Zedekiah, both of whom were taken into Babylonian
- 3:59exile, Jehovah Chin in 597 BC. And you can confirm that in
- 4:05Second Kings chapter 24 verses 8 through 17 and Zedekiah in 586.
- 4:13And that can be found in Second Kings chapter 25 verses one
- 4:17through 7. How were the captives LED away
- 4:21with hooks? Conquerors would sometimes
- 4:23humiliate defeated kings by putting hooks or rings attached
- 4:28to a leash through the victim's nose, jaw, or lip.
- 4:34Apparently the same technique was used with wild animals.
- 4:38Assyrian inscriptions and artwork as well as Second Kings
- 4:42chapter 19 verse 28 give evidence of this practice in the
- 4:47ancient Near East. And the other question was how
- 4:52was the mother like a fruitful vine?
- 4:55The vine probably stands for Judah or Jerusalem, not a
- 4:59literal Queen Mother. In light of the context, the
- 5:02fruitfulness of the vine probably refers to the glory and
- 5:06strength of David's dynasty, which never lacked A ruler.
- 5:11So the first one we talked about the Pharaoh, one of the kings
- 5:15being led to Egypt and that relates to verse 4.
- 5:20Then it verse 5 says when she saw her hope unfulfilled.
- 5:28It seems like the unfulfilled in in leaders, like there's there's
- 5:32no good leader that's coming about.
- 5:35And then Jehovah Chin of Judah, he was taken to Babylon and he
- 5:40was imprisoned for 37 years where he eventually died in
- 5:44prison. And that's kind of what this
- 5:47alludes to, that they put him in a cage and brought him to the
- 5:51king of Babylon. They put him in prison.
- 5:53So his roar was heard no longer on the mountains of Israel.
- 5:58And then this description about being this vine planted by
- 6:03water, it's very similar to Ezekiel 17.
- 6:07And it maybe picks up some of that same theme where this
- 6:13relates to rulership and being uprooted.
- 6:17And that's what this says in verse 12.
- 6:19It says, but it was uprooted in fury and thrown to the ground.
- 6:24So this was a rebellious nation that was rebelling against their
- 6:30God, our God. And this is it was taken away
- 6:35from them because of idolatry. And then it says now it is
- 6:41planted in the desert in a dry and thirsty land.
- 6:44So I was wondering, was Babylon considered a desert?
- 6:48So I looked that up and it actually was called desert by
- 6:51the sea. So the Exiles going into Babylon
- 6:57now, you know, their, their cities remain, their capitals
- 7:01remain no more. They don't have kings that are
- 7:05ruling over these areas anymore. King Zedekiah was the last one
- 7:10who was taken into exile. Before he was taken into exile,
- 7:14he visually saw his sons be executed and then they gouged
- 7:19out his eyes and then walked him to Babylon, which was, I
- 7:25believe, hundreds of miles away. And, and so that was also
- 7:31prophecy that Ezekiel gave that was fulfilled.
- 7:35So all of these things did happen.
- 7:38Zedekiah was the Last King of the southern tribe of Judah.
- 7:43Remember the first, the northern tribe of Judah, the 10 tribes,
- 7:49they were overcome by Assyria years before.
- 7:54But then the southern tribe of Judah was then later conquered
- 7:59by Babylon and people were taken in exile to Babylon.
- 8:03So at that point, there are no more kings.
- 8:06The Kingdom has failed, and it ended with Zedekiah.
- 8:10And it's kind of interesting that Zedekiah was the Last King
- 8:13and he was blinded and then we know today.
- 8:17This is just kind of ironic that I thought of is how the
- 8:20Israelites are blinded to Jesus right now.
- 8:27Not, not all, but many are and don't recognize him as the
- 8:33Messiah. So that's kind of interesting
- 8:37that when you see some symbology like that and you know that it
- 8:42won't be until they call on the name of Jesus before, I guess
- 8:46when he returns, I think it's when they say blessed is he who
- 8:51comes in the name of the Lord. And I think that's when Jesus
- 8:55will return. So that is the end of chapter
- 9:0119. This was a short 1 today and I
- 9:04think I'll just leave it at that and then we will pick up chapter
- 9:0720 the next time.
