- 0:28Welcome back to the Elon Musk Podcast.
- 0:30This is a show where we discuss the critical crossroads that
- 0:33shape SpaceX, Tesla X, The Boring Company, and Neuralink.
- 0:38And I'm your host Will Walden. Tesla is continuing its severe
- 0:41layoffs now into the 4th week, affecting multiple departments
- 0:45within the company. Employees from software,
- 0:47services and engineering divisions have been dismissed,
- 0:51with the layoffs being initially reported by Electric and
- 0:54Business Insider, and report surfaced of affected workers
- 0:58sharing their layoffs on professional networks like
- 1:01LinkedIn. Recent job cuts were executed
- 1:04over the recent weekend in early Monday, according to affected
- 1:07employees. However, the exact number of
- 1:09affected employees remains undisclosed and Business Insider
- 1:14said that at least seven employees had announced their
- 1:16layoffs on Sunday alone. These layoffs are part of a
- 1:20broader reduction effort that began last month, where Tesla
- 1:23initially aimed to reduce its global workforce by 10%,
- 1:27totaling 14,000 employees from its 140,000 strong workforce
- 1:33now. This significant cut included
- 1:35high level positions, notably Tesla's head of EV charging,
- 1:39Rebecca Tenucci and her entire team of 500 people.
- 1:45Now, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has articulated a need for a
- 1:48significant reorganization of the company every five years.
- 1:52In a company wide e-mail, Musk emphasized the necessity of the
- 1:55layoffs, stating that employees working under executives who do
- 1:59not meet the standards of excellence, necessity and
- 2:01trustworthiness would be dismissed.
- 2:04And Musk's motivation for the layoffs appear to be influenced
- 2:07by financial concerns, as he privately expressed the desire
- 2:10to reduce the company's workforce by 20%, mirroring a
- 2:14decline in quarterly vehicle deliveries.
- 2:17Now Tesla's financial health is showing strain, with a 55%
- 2:20decrease in profits year over year amid falling sales, and the
- 2:25company faces increasing competition in key markets such
- 2:28as the US and China, and a global decrease in demand for
- 2:32electric vehicles. And despite the company's
- 2:35challenges and vehicle sales, Musk is pivoting Tesla's focus
- 2:38towards autonomous vehicles. He's promised the release of a
- 2:41fully autonomous Robo taxi later this year, signaling a shift in
- 2:46company strategy away from the low price $25,000 budget EV.
- 2:52Now following the dismissal more than 10% of Tesla's workforce,
- 2:56the company has further reduced its employee base, including the
- 2:59termination of senior executives and veterans such as the entire
- 3:02Supercharger team. Now Tesla began this round of
- 3:05layoffs by eliminating multiple teams at the Gigafactory in
- 3:08Texas and reducing production shifts which included firing
- 3:12significant executives connected to vinyl projects.
- 3:16And among those layoffs were key personnel such as Drew Baglino,
- 3:20former VP of powertrain and energy engineering, and Rohan
- 3:24Patel, head of policy and business development, signifying
- 3:27a major shake up within the company's leadership.
- 3:30In news of these layoffs was first brought to light through
- 3:33internal communications confirmed by reports in The
- 3:37Information, which highlighted impending exit of Rebecca
- 3:40Tanucci and nearly her entire team of 500 people.
- 3:45Now Tanucci, who had played a crucial role in expanding
- 3:48Tesla's Supercharger network and in negotiating the adoption of
- 3:52the North American charging standard, the NAX was recognized
- 3:56as a significant figure in this industry.
- 3:58Her departure suggested potential shift in Tesla's
- 4:01approach to its charging infrastructure strategy.
- 4:05Tesla plans to continue some construction on new
- 4:07Superchargers, although the overall strategy appears to be
- 4:11scaling back even as the demand for faster charging solutions is
- 4:15increasing. Another significant layoffs was
- 4:18that of Daniel Ho, Director of Vehicle Programs, indicating
- 4:22potential issues within the team responsible for new product
- 4:25initiatives at a time when Tesla anticipates a slowdown in sales
- 4:30growth pending the release of new vehicle models.
- 4:33These layoffs occur against the backdrop of an industry wide
- 4:37trend where tech companies are reducing their workforces
- 4:41despite relatively high profits and Tesla's decision to cut jobs
- 4:46follow similar moves by other tech giants, reflecting A
- 4:48cautious or possibly reactive approach to market conditions.
- 4:53Now some people like to criticize the dismantling of a
- 4:59Supercharger team. The people over at Electric and
- 5:03I definitely enjoy their work over there and they said that it
- 5:09was a poor strategic move given the current industry dynamics
- 5:12and recent milestones achieved by the team under Tenucci's
- 5:16leadership. And right now I would have to
- 5:19agree with them. You can tell that everybody's
- 5:25going towards the NEX plug system and I don't know why they
- 5:29would scale down their charging team.
- 5:32If other companies are going to start using NEX unless they have
- 5:35something already lined up where they can manufacture them
- 5:39cheaper or they can have a different team do installations
- 5:43or cover the groundwork for other companies like Ford and
- 5:48other large manufacturers. I'm not sure why they laid off
- 5:51the whole team. Maybe there's going to be a a
- 5:53huge restructuring and they're going to make the team a little
- 5:57bit more lightweight, but I don't know why they would fire
- 6:00the head executive of that team. That's a weird strategy.
- 6:03Now it's a, it's a very important to to think about the
- 6:09people that have been laid off and if there's going to be
- 6:1120,000 people being laid off, where those people are going to
- 6:14go? Are they going to other tech
- 6:15companies or are they going to go to other vehicle companies?
- 6:18We'll see some really talented people possibly go to
- 6:22competitors of Tesla, and that's OK.
- 6:25We need the competition. Tesla needs the competition.
- 6:28They've been to the forefront of electric vehicles forever.
- 6:34And they could use some definite competition to kind of push them
- 6:39around a little bit because they're the big dog and they
- 6:42need some some people to show them that they're not the best,
- 6:48even though currently they are. So competition breeds excellence
- 6:53and we're going to see some new people in new roles in probably
- 6:59some old companies. And it's going to be a very
- 7:01hectic and very great time for the next, in the next few years
- 7:06for the EV market. And the broader impact of these
- 7:10layoffs on company morale is profound.
- 7:12Think about it. If 14,000 people get laid off,
- 7:16that's a huge chunk of the workforce.
- 7:17You never know who's going to be next, and you know they're
- 7:21facing uncertainty about their job security.
- 7:24The atmosphere is exacerbated by the timing of these layoffs,
- 7:28which coincides with a proposed significant payout to Tesla.
- 7:31CEO Elon was supposed to get 10s of billions of dollars due to
- 7:36his work that he's done with Tesla.
- 7:39And since he's making so much money, sure, there's some people
- 7:42that wonder why he had let so many people go and not just give
- 7:46him a little chunk of that and keep him around, but I guess
- 7:50that's not how you make a successful auto and AI company
- 7:53like Tesla. How the ongoing Tesla layoffs
- 7:57might not yet be concluded, though there could be some more
- 8:01as there's speculation about further reductions in the
- 8:04uncertain environment suggests more challenges ahead for the
- 8:07company as it continues to navigate significant internal
- 8:10restructuring and external market pressures.
