- 0:22None. A hamster with a blunt pen knife
- 0:35for doing. Quicker, quicker.
- 0:39Quicker hello and welcome back to A Hamster with a Blunt
- 0:44Penknife, the Doctor Who Commentary podcast with me, Luke
- 0:48Malloy, and our host Joe Ford. Hello.
- 0:55What was? That AM Sr.
- 0:59Hello. Welcome to a hamster with a
- 1:02blunt bear knife. Oh no, I sound like a creepy
- 1:05pervert. Well, we're both creepy
- 1:09perverts. We're going to oh God.
- 1:12That's good thing. We're doing a Steven Moffitt
- 1:14script, then in it the Creep. Yeah, we've got to be in that
- 1:16zone and we're doing Asylum of the Daleks.
- 1:21Yeah, we've been talking about this for some time now, haven't
- 1:23we? Yeah, I absolutely love it.
- 1:25And you? I I'm not a fan of this one, but
- 1:30then that'll come as no great surprise to anybody.
- 1:33I remember once you put up a publicity still of this story.
- 1:39You know that fabulous picture that was on the front cover of
- 1:41Doctor Who Magazine? Is that the one of?
- 1:44Harry and Amy and there's all sort of sparks raining down and
- 1:48Daleks all around them. Does that actually happen in
- 1:51this story? He picks her up when she
- 1:54collapses around the ballerinas. It's not as action-packed as it
- 1:58looked on the posters, but I mean, who who cares?
- 2:02It's a publicity Provo. The world of Nothing Time Doctor
- 2:06Falls poster is like see cyber and flying around explosions.
- 2:10That doesn't particularly happen.
- 2:13It's weird, you know, because I had years and years, Five years,
- 2:15in fact, that Jimmy was in charge of the show where I had
- 2:19to compare his publicity attempts to happy love,
- 2:23publicity that came before. But fortunately, we're now back
- 2:26in the era of Rusty Davis, where there's been more publicity in
- 2:30the last three months than there was.
- 2:32In the last. Five.
- 2:33Yeah, it it was really all summed up by Ryan Graham.
- 2:36And y'all sat around the table, wasn't it?
- 2:39It really was. Are you excited?
- 2:41For oh, I wasn't. Look at.
- 2:45This I wanted to know what they were drinking.
- 2:49How? How far we fell.
- 2:51How far we fell I because you and I recorded the series six
- 2:58story the other day. I'm going to ask you the same
- 3:00question I asked you at the beginning of that two parter is
- 3:05how do you find Series 7, both A&B or as a whole?
- 3:10If you want to talk about it that way, Do you think it
- 3:13compares well to what came before?
- 3:16Are there issues with? Yeah, everyone knows there's
- 3:19issues with it. I think the Matt Smith seasons,
- 3:22it's my second favorite. I think 6 is actually my least
- 3:25favorite, but it is just that sort of feeling of it being dark
- 3:28like we discussed the other day. They're only being like certain
- 3:31episodes that particularly stand out.
- 3:34Seven's very accessible. You can see why it went for the
- 3:38stand alone 11 a week. Different story thing in the
- 3:42build up to the 50th because you can just pop in and pop out.
- 3:45The problem is it does lead to quite a few of them feeling a
- 3:49bit non substantial or feeling like you have another
- 3:52particularly full meal. But I I like popping into quite
- 3:58a lot of these. And because they're all visually
- 4:00different and sort of totally different, you know, you've got
- 4:05your hides and you've got your rings of Akuten, the name of the
- 4:08Doctor, so they're all sort of all doing different things.
- 4:12And you don't particularly have to be strapped down to the
- 4:14season arc like you were in Series 6.
- 4:16So it definitely works as a reaction to Season 6.
- 4:19And I think I prefer B, Yeah, I know, I know.
- 4:26I think I prefer BI Love, Amy and Rory.
- 4:30I don't think there's that much more of a story to tell with
- 4:33them and it is just about successfully done over 5
- 4:36episodes. This really got me excited for
- 4:41Clara when or Oswin when it started and so I think I was
- 4:45always just excited to get to Clara slash Oswin and they felt
- 4:51really fresh at the time. I I don't they they don't really
- 4:56on the surface like she's a girl that doesn't know Twitter what
- 5:00Twitter is but they felt like fresh big stories.
- 5:03Doctor Who looked great. Very colourful, yeah.
- 5:07As a reaction to like what we've seen as well.
- 5:10Like visually, I think it's a step up from six.
- 5:14Yeah, and I quite liked you know it is we have got the impossible
- 5:17girl but it is a bit more just stripped back and simple and I
- 5:23say like if you just. Want to put look in my language
- 5:25now? Moffitt stripped back and
- 5:27simple. I love it when I get when we get
- 5:29complicated. But like, I just, I do really
- 5:32like that run of B where you've just got 8 episodes of a doctor,
- 5:38a companion doing an adventure. For me, it's like a game of two
- 5:43halves. I think that 7A minus Asylum of
- 5:49the Daleks but including The Snowman is my favorite, like
- 5:55consecutive run of Steven Moffat era episodes from any season.
- 5:59I don't think there's a dub there.
- 6:01Dinosaurs on a Spaceship I think is brilliant fun.
- 6:05That is, that is Chip. Features possibly Matt Smith's
- 6:09best performance, and it addresses all the things I
- 6:11dislike about his performance, like the way he does anger and
- 6:15things like that. But does it brilliantly and it's
- 6:18a good morality tale as well and it's a good western.
- 6:21I think The Power of 3 is one of Chipnall's best scripts.
- 6:26I don't like the ending, but until that point, I think it's
- 6:29one of his best ever scripts. Angel Takes Manhattan.
- 6:31It's brilliant and I love the Snowman as well.
- 6:34There's no other point in Muffet's run where I've got 5
- 6:37consecutive stories that I like in Iraq.
- 6:40Like B is my least favorite run of ever.
- 6:43Steven Muffet's era I've never sort of gone from.
- 6:46Such a high to. Such a low so.
- 6:48Quickly Bell St. John.
- 6:51I think it's very substandard. I like the rings of Akuten.
- 6:54Cold War is boring as hell it is.
- 6:56I've got very mixed feelings about Journey to Center Toilets
- 7:00and Nightmare Silver like the deer of the new series.
- 7:04It's horror's. Fun to a point.
- 7:06Name of the doctors, Moffett riffing like he's doing his old
- 7:10tricks and just sort of waiting out to the 50th.
- 7:12And it really feels like a lot of the innovation of this, of
- 7:15this series is sort of going down the pan.
- 7:19I so I agree with a bit of what you said.
- 7:26Yeah. If I had to go through it, I
- 7:27think out of all of the Asylum of Daleks is the best one.
- 7:32Or the whole? Yeah, yeah, 100%.
- 7:35Maybe not including the 50th for that itself, but that's a bit
- 7:38harder to write. Anyway, we'll get into why we
- 7:42don't want dinosaurs is fine, but it it's very it's a chip
- 7:48null tick, list of countdowns and big crews and everything
- 7:54else that he usually does. A town called Mercy is fine as
- 7:57well. It's not one I particularly like
- 7:58to put on. I do like that scene though,
- 8:02where you know the the scene when he kicks him out and he's
- 8:04holding the gun and everything that is.
- 8:06Brilliant Scarborough's performance as the.
- 8:08I just think Western's there's only so much new stuff you can
- 8:13do with the. I don't particularly think it
- 8:15treads all the grounds. It's just it's just a bit
- 8:18repetitive because you've seen it, quite a lot of the tropes
- 8:20and stuff before. They pull off a western, IE
- 8:24visually, in a way that they have those enormous vistas, you
- 8:29know, horses, right in a western town in the middle of nowhere.
- 8:33It just looks amazing. Yeah, the visuals have gone up
- 8:37another notch, haven't they? Like Series 6, apart from The
- 8:41Impossible Astronaut Lake is generally BBC budget.
- 8:46But then you get to hear and we start to get more episodes that
- 8:50look more expensive. I don't think there's, I don't
- 8:53think there's like a massive knock down during Capaldi's
- 8:56time, but I know that they had their budget was knocked during
- 9:00that era. Yeah, I think that the budget
- 9:02was knocked down, but they film it so much better that it's it
- 9:06has a style and A and a class about it that makes it look like
- 9:10it's. Lights down.
- 9:11You know, you can't really tell. They're in small studios.
- 9:15A power of three. I totally agree with you.
- 9:16It's great up until that last 10 minutes where it sounds like I
- 9:20can't wait for the behind the scenes on that one day when we
- 9:22finally get to the bottom. What the hell did Stephen Burke
- 9:25off do? I'm not playing this shit.
- 9:28I'm gone. Are you just saying that it's
- 9:33very good, but riddled with sort of stupid logic?
- 9:37In a way, The snowman's brilliant.
- 9:40The snowman is brilliant. Do you know what I really love
- 9:42about those four is that I am totally on board with Amy in
- 9:45those four episodes in a way that I'll never have been
- 9:48before. I think she is portrayed as
- 9:50being mature and competent and just effortlessly likable.
- 9:55They've kind of ironed out her rougher side.
- 10:00I mean, she wouldn't be though if it wasn't for this divorce
- 10:03plot in this 10. God, OK, well, we'll get into
- 10:06that. But that does like in series six
- 10:11they are aiming where we are on the same page.
- 10:14But then this really reinforces it like almost for life.
- 10:18Which then you get in Angels Take Manhattan, But yeah, no.
- 10:23And then seven BI really like bells.
- 10:26It's just a breezy run around. Rings is fucking great even
- 10:30though everyone hates it. Also, Saint John is about evil
- 10:34Wi-Fi and what do we get? Just a bunch of robots with
- 10:37spoon heads. But it's so it's so breezy.
- 10:39It's not for me, it's not really about the the, like, alien
- 10:43attack. It is just about the Doctor and
- 10:46Clara, sort of on a date, almost in my in my mind their their
- 10:50boyfriend and girlfriend. People don't.
- 10:51People hate this, but they are. You are the.
- 10:55Straightest Doctor Who found of all time.
- 10:59You are the laddish Dr., You just want to fucking in the
- 11:04TARDIS. Maybe the opposite of JMT?
- 11:12Flux had opens with Jody and Mandy scissoring on that.
- 11:17Would you objected. I'd like it so much more.
- 11:22I bet you. Not even scissoring, but if they
- 11:26had been an established like girlfriends I I would like it or
- 11:31I think it's just more interesting the.
- 11:33Trouble is, is I don't think you told the majority of.
- 11:36Doctor Who found them in that? Respect.
- 11:38I don't know. I really, really don't.
- 11:41Which is, which is very refreshing and why I want to
- 11:44keep having your back on this. You're kind of running in
- 11:47people's prejudices, you know? Yeah, I mean it's not, it's not
- 11:51a lie though. It's just something must have
- 11:54happened. The stuff I used to watch as a
- 11:56it's like a kid or TV drama or whatever must have just sunk in
- 12:01that I like it when people are getting off of each other.
- 12:06I used to watch so much Corridation St. and soaps and
- 12:08stuff, and that's constantly happening.
- 12:10So maybe that just fits in the. But, you know, like, you know,
- 12:14I'm from that sort of classic WHO era, which was so chaste.
- 12:18But even if people did kiss, you know, it was, yeah, like.
- 12:22The worst. Chemistry.
- 12:23Ever. Yeah, I remember watching
- 12:25Terminus and then going on Doc Two Wiki and it's like, oh,
- 12:30Davidson's only kiss when he kisses Nyssa.
- 12:33And I was thinking. What is that?
- 12:34A kiss? I did.
- 12:35I. Miss that?
- 12:36And then I had fucking had to put Terminus on again for me to.
- 12:42Try and find it. It's right at the end.
- 12:43Yeah, to see this little Peck, really just nothing, is it?
- 12:48And I don't think, I don't think we get a snog in Doctor Who
- 12:50until the girl in the fireplace. That's the first snog.
- 12:53Oh no. We get one in UF when the Doctor
- 12:55snogs Cassandra. Yeah, OK, that's the first snog
- 12:58then. Or maybe.
- 13:00Oh no. The TV part of, Oh yeah, I was
- 13:03guessing part of the way is just going.
- 13:05Backwards. That's very chase though, the TV
- 13:07movie. Yeah, it's a it's a big moment
- 13:11just for the kiss, isn't it? Was part of the ways is a big
- 13:14moment. There's the kiss, but it's also
- 13:16like the resolution at the same time.
- 13:18It's all sort of lips and no tongues, isn't it?
- 13:22Ashbrook deserve better. So I I promised you a minor Ran
- 13:29at the beginning of this episode.
- 13:30Oh, yes. And I want to say it now because
- 13:33it goes by as such a lick this, but I don't think there's time
- 13:36to address all these things whilst we're going to be
- 13:38watching the episode because there's going to be so much to
- 13:40talk about. But I have a serious issue with
- 13:44the 1st 15 minutes of Asylum with the Daleks, and it's the
- 13:49same issue I have with The Magician's Apprentice in Series
- 13:519 is I don't think it's necessary at all.
- 13:55I think it's 15 minutes of Steven Moffat vamping and then
- 13:59the plot actually starts when we get to the Asylum, when we're
- 14:02down on the planet. And I would have preferred it
- 14:05had the Doctor just turned up with Amy and Rory.
- 14:09Yeah, he's just collected them and they're not getting on, but
- 14:12they come along in the TARDIS, they land on the asylum and they
- 14:15unpick the mystery of the asylum.
- 14:17What you get instead is this overly elaborate set up for 5
- 14:21minutes and then just basically all the explanations of the
- 14:24episode, minus the the Oswin twist.
- 14:27I've like, right, we're going down to the asylum.
- 14:29This is what it is. This is what we want you to do.
- 14:31So when they're on the planet there's not really anything to
- 14:34sort of unpeel, it's just them sort of wandering around for 20
- 14:38minutes and then the twist at the end.
- 14:41I would basically what I'm saying is I would have preferred
- 14:43this being battered into the shape of a old fashioned Doctor
- 14:46Who story where they just land and discover things as they go
- 14:50along. And if you will bear with me for
- 14:53a second, I've got a small list here of the the intense issues I
- 14:58have with the 1st 5 minutes, the pre title sequence.
- 15:00OK. I was just going to count her in
- 15:02with the you said yeah, you prefer it was a classic series.
- 15:07I was about to say that the whole opening is very much
- 15:12desired for a modern audience, isn't it?
- 15:13It's it's flashy and grabs your attention in a way that for a
- 15:17series opener, I don't think you can open a series with just the
- 15:21Doctor, Amy and Rory Landon on Abandoned Planet.
- 15:24I don't think it does enough to grab your attention for a series
- 15:27opener. I think you would have more time
- 15:29then to explore the things that are interesting about this
- 15:32story, IE the asylum, which we just don't.
- 15:36Well yeah, what we'll say is you're right.
- 15:39We go to the asylum for 20 minutes.
- 15:41I think that 20 minutes is meant to be an action-packed fight
- 15:45against Daleks, which I goes, well, I'll say like 10 minutes
- 15:49of it is, but 10 minutes of it is also wandering around.
- 15:52You are right about that. I was watching Power at the
- 15:55Doctor last night and that does the exact same thing.
- 15:59You have half an hour of dancing around different locations and
- 16:03different like set pieces before the story actually starts with
- 16:08Rasputin. Which story are you talking
- 16:11about? There's about 15 in that one.
- 16:13Yeah, well, the actual story really is the.
- 16:16The Master just needs to capture the Doctor in Rasputin's palace
- 16:20so they can start the first generation.
- 16:22But we get the bit on the train, we get the.
- 16:24Train's all about the little girl.
- 16:27Yeah, but you don't need it, do you?
- 16:29There could just be an energy Planet right there.
- 16:33Like you could. You could use this criticism
- 16:34about any big of Doctor Who. It's artificially created.
- 16:39And I was just like, I was just like, yeah, this is where the
- 16:41plot's starting. So what have the previous 15
- 16:44minutes been about? What I should tell you?
- 16:46You ready? I got a listen.
- 16:47I mean again, in power of the Doctor.
- 16:49The Master gets captured by you that only to go back in time and
- 16:52become Rasputin all that piss for no reason.
- 16:55But you do get the great line. Your dad's an idiot.
- 16:59Power of the Doctor does feel very like a Moffett script with
- 17:01everything thrown in. Did it?
- 17:02It's like Chipnalls list of like, OK, what didn't I cover
- 17:06during the series that I wanted to do?
- 17:08Because my season, last season was condensed.
- 17:09I'm going to put it all in. And he did.
- 17:11Yeah, he did. No wonder you like that one.
- 17:14Yeah, it well, it works like the story isn't really like, doesn't
- 17:19really add up to anything, but it's so flashy and quick that
- 17:23you're just happy. Sorry.
- 17:26Yeah, go on, go on. Your deep, deep critical of the
- 17:301st 5 minutes. Well.
- 17:31Though because I was like I was watching it and we've ever seen
- 17:34this pre credit. Sequence I was like, oh.
- 17:36God, oh God. Because it was all the things
- 17:38that irritated. Me that.
- 17:40Steven Muff is writing so there was like an off screen
- 17:43development that really makes zero sense given where we last
- 17:47left the characters, which was in The Doctor, Widow and the
- 17:50Wardrobe, where the Doctor went for Christmas dinner and
- 17:52everyone was happy and then skipped forward to one episode
- 17:55later. They hate each other.
- 17:57And there's been all of this off, off screen.
- 17:59Development and I don't like that.
- 18:00I don't like missing, but it's like cutting.
- 18:03Out the drama. It's not one episode later,
- 18:06though. It's nine in in normal time.
- 18:09It's nine months later. Doctor in the Water is in
- 18:11December and then this is in terms.
- 18:13Of the show that we're watching, it's one episode later.
- 18:16I mean loads of loads of series and start their openers with the
- 18:20characters in a different place where we left them.
- 18:23Yeah, I like it. I think.
- 18:27I think people might like it more if it wasn't reverted back
- 18:32to normal by the end maybe. Yeah, well, that's the other
- 18:35thing as well, yeah, is that they have two conversations and
- 18:38then all of these issues go away and they're happily in love
- 18:41again. But the fact that they were
- 18:42signing divorce papers at the beginning of the story?
- 18:45But that is brilliant and we will get there.
- 18:48Well you can tell me when I'm wrong about that also as well.
- 18:51I don't like the over sexualisation of Amy and I know
- 18:54you like that. I don't, but I as a as a hot
- 18:57blooded heterosexual man, I can understand why you were like.
- 19:01No, you're just talking about the modelling stuff for the I
- 19:04don't particularly think that's oversexualisation, though, do
- 19:08you? No, not really.
- 19:09It's not like Siri's fine when she's walking around dressed up
- 19:12in police uniforms and short skirts.
- 19:15It's like it's almost a more powerful thing that she's a
- 19:18mortal, which we know she's. Just opening with this slow.
- 19:21Motion shot of her hair waving in the air.
- 19:24Yeah, but it's meant to show that she's like, powerful
- 19:27because she's getting divorced and she's, you know, it's an
- 19:30intimidating situation for Rory to walk into.
- 19:33I just sort of rolled my eyes and went, OK, we're doing this
- 19:36again. I It's also the way Moffett
- 19:41tells a very simple story in an overly complicated way.
- 19:46That's whole thing about all these Dalek duplicates all over
- 19:49the earth. Picking up Amy, Rory and the
- 19:51Doctor from various locations and I'm like, well.
- 19:54When did they do that? How does this happen?
- 19:58Oh, it's it's what I said about Series 6 is there's there's more
- 20:01questions than there are answers, and it's a way of
- 20:04getting the story from A to B. But by doing that I'm kind of
- 20:08kind. What?
- 20:09How did this all happen? When did they arrive on Earth?
- 20:12What's happening with them now like?
- 20:14They are the sort of questions that if you're not on board with
- 20:17Doctor Who, they annoy you, but if you like the episode, you
- 20:21don't even think about them. I think we know which side of
- 20:25the lie we're on there. Then you've got the
- 20:30bastardization of the show, which Moffett loves doing.
- 20:32The Parliament of the Daleks. Right.
- 20:35What? What's wrong with that?
- 20:37The Daleks don't do. Fucking politics.
- 20:39I mean, I know politics is evil. Don't get me wrong.
- 20:42But the quintessence of evil that's standing.
- 20:46Around debating what they're going to do.
- 20:48But it's no Dumber than any other Daleks set up we've ever
- 20:52had. I just don't make any sense.
- 20:54If we walked into. Into one of their debates.
- 20:58If we walked into that spaceship, it wasn't called
- 21:03that. No one would have an issue with
- 21:04it. It's literally just a label.
- 21:07I I'm not sure that Stephen Moffitt has much interest in the
- 21:11Daleks, and I think in order to do something interesting with
- 21:15them, he tries to bat them into unusual shapes.
- 21:20Yeah, I agree with that. I don't.
- 21:21I don't think it ever really works.
- 21:23No, but again, it's like I admire him for doing it.
- 21:26He's looked at the last 50 years and gone.
- 21:29He's probably done everything you can do with the Daleks as
- 21:31killing tanks. Like we might as well try and
- 21:35see where we can push them I. Heard it.
- 21:38And into the Dalek, you know where they went.
- 21:40Small and inside the Dalek. I preferred all that.
- 21:43No shit that because there's just no because the the real bad
- 21:49guy inside into the Dalek is them little floaty eyes.
- 21:53And no, it's the doctor in it that's like basically
- 21:55establishing. That's Clara, and she gives him
- 21:58a good slap around the chops. She's always the bad gutter
- 22:02about that moment. OK, well, we'll talk.
- 22:05We'll talk about that Parliament a bit more, but I just found
- 22:08out. Can we imagine?
- 22:09We're all standing around, right?
- 22:11I do declare we will attack the planet Spiridon.
- 22:16No. Please, please don't give Nick
- 22:18Briggs ideas he could do. He could do A1 mambos.
- 22:24Imagine a whole series of that, just him talking to himself.
- 22:31Oh, it would be absolutely awful.
- 22:33What else have I got here? Hang on a minute, I'm off screen
- 22:36to better done that the Dalek duplicates and their stupid ass
- 22:40stalks. I don't like I agree with this
- 22:42one. Yeah, I don't even think it
- 22:45sounds good on paper. And I and I I think I've got to
- 22:48the point now as well where I don't like sort of stupid tag
- 22:53lines at the end of pre tile sequences.
- 22:55So that whole sort of say if the Daleks say.
- 22:59No, that's great. Again, it's a hook to get you
- 23:02in, so you got to think if you're a normal.
- 23:04You're always subtle the ways of doing this though that.
- 23:07If you're if you're a normal viewer, it's tuning in.
- 23:09Hasn't particularly watched Dog 2 for a while.
- 23:12You know the Daleks are evil. It's a very easy way to be to
- 23:15just pique your interest a little bit.
- 23:17I thought the only way I could be more annoyed by the Daleks
- 23:20charting things out is the end of this episode where they all
- 23:22start chanting Doctor Who. Another great moment.
- 23:31OK, well that's my list. Well done, you've managed to
- 23:33look out there every. Yeah.
- 23:36We'll delve into a few in more detail when we start.
- 23:40I've got I've got a caveat with this that it comes with just a
- 23:45really, really good memory and like I think whenever you're or
- 23:51you're watching episode of Doctor and there's a good memory
- 23:53associated with it. It instantly becomes up there in
- 23:56your favorite. But the Doctor Twitter account,
- 24:00months before Silent Daleks, maybe two months, something like
- 24:03that, said that the Series 7A trailer was dropping at 6:00 AM
- 24:08in the morning and it was like the summer holidays and I was
- 24:12like, I'm going to stay up. I don't think I'd ever, ever
- 24:15stayed up on my own till like throughout the entire night.
- 24:20And like, I mean, Mum and Dad will go to bed at 11:00 and I
- 24:23was like, I'm staying up to the alarm.
- 24:25For 6:00 AM. Or no, no, it's just staying up.
- 24:28And I was like, I'm going to watch Doctor Who all night and
- 24:30then when it gets to 6:00 AM, I'll watch the trailer and go to
- 24:32bed. Same.
- 24:34Story already. Then I picked the DVD off the
- 24:38shelf I hadn't watched, which was the Sensorites.
- 24:43You said you were going to make a link between this and the
- 24:45Sensorites. Which, jeez, it really pushed it
- 24:49for tiredness did. You stay awake for six episodes
- 24:53of the. Sensor Yeah, yeah.
- 24:55Overnight. Overnight, but I was on.
- 24:57Fucking stamina loop below, art. I was on Doctor Who TV.
- 25:01The website at the time was it was quite good for like a forum
- 25:05or comments. So there was like there were
- 25:07people up waiting. So I was like talking to people
- 25:10on the forum but also watching part four of the sensor rights,
- 25:14trying to keep an external. Stimulation was you'd have had
- 25:18no hope at all staying away. Oh, well, I know.
- 25:21I know, I I actually think that's the only time I've
- 25:24watched the sensor. It's that night, which again,
- 25:27makes it a little bit more special.
- 25:29I remember part one being amazing.
- 25:31It's, you know, it starts on the spaceship.
- 25:33You get the sensor out of the window.
- 25:34It's like, oh, I've got five more of these.
- 25:37Thing that makes me laugh right is you've got Doctor Who, this
- 25:40amazing traveller in time and space.
- 25:41Yeah, and but it's the first time in the show they've ever
- 25:44gone to a spaceship. So when the door's open, he
- 25:47goes. It's a spaceship.
- 25:49I've never seen one before. Oh, it is creepy that.
- 25:54What did you think of the trailer then?
- 25:56Yes. So then the trailer did drop at
- 25:59like 6:00 and just I remember being blown away by the shots of
- 26:04the Dalek Parliament that like quite a lot of the trailer was a
- 26:08sign of the Dalek. So there was, yeah, just had
- 26:10this massive like scenes of Daleks and him saying like how
- 26:16much trouble are we in out of 10 and 11?
- 26:21I just really got me going. Then right at the end of the
- 26:24trailer he's it's that shot of him carrying Amy and Rory's
- 26:27like, who killed all the Daleks and Dr's like who would you
- 26:30think? And I was.
- 26:32I was so buzzy, Really, Doctor. Who as Marvel is perfect for
- 26:37you? So it felt like it was.
- 26:40It was. I trailed it, but a lot of it
- 26:43was for a sign of the Daleks and that got me really excited for
- 26:45it. And then I watched it and yeah,
- 26:48we'll get into it, but the surprises and the twists in it
- 26:52related to all swim really made it special as well, that.
- 26:56Was the best of this episode. Yeah.
- 26:59What irritates me about that? Obviously there's the caveat is
- 27:02none of it makes sense in in hindsight.
- 27:05And the twist of what happens to Clara jumping into that wibbly
- 27:08thing and all the splinters and none of it is given anywhere
- 27:11near enough explanation. I'm like, what were those
- 27:14people? Are there millions of Clara
- 27:16around the universe, living random lives, having no clue as
- 27:21to how they came to be? Well, it doesn't matter if if
- 27:24you're on board with it, it's there.
- 27:25And if you're not, it doesn't have to be because.
- 27:28It. Might not be your answer to
- 27:29every single time we do. Name, but because because the
- 27:33Doctor doesn't die at Gentle or anymore then the Clara splinters
- 27:37thing doesn't happen, but it it also sort of does.
- 27:41So you can just choose whichever one you want and.
- 27:44Boss idea, do you know? Well, because she jumps into
- 27:48this. Like, you know, all those
- 27:49mysteries we discussed in The Impossible Astronaut.
- 27:52I wish he'd stuck the landing in the Web Roof Song.
- 27:54All the mysteries around Clara. And this.
- 27:56I wish he'd stuck the landing in name of the Doctor.
- 28:00Like he's got such massive ideas, such bold ideas.
- 28:04I. Think he really tries to
- 28:05simplify it for the Impossible Girl though, because it is just
- 28:08she steps in to a time stream and is split across all his
- 28:12adventures, which isn't anywhere near as complex as season 6.
- 28:16It's not. But then I I just don't
- 28:18understand what those splinters are like.
- 28:21Are they living lives like they seem to be living lives?
- 28:23Because every time we catch up with one of them, Oswin and the
- 28:26governess and all of this. So is there the potential, the
- 28:30Doctor Who story? We might suddenly see a version
- 28:33of Clara. Like, yeah, yeah.
- 28:34And I think I've. I've not got there yet.
- 28:36But the Doctor Who comic strip did it, but they had Capaldi and
- 28:40Clara bump into another Clara Splinter.
- 28:44But I've not read it so I don't know.
- 28:47But yeah, I feel like it's just it's loads of versions of her
- 28:50with a subconscious thought to help a time traveller called the
- 28:55Doctor. If ever, if it ever happens, but
- 28:57without knowing, you know. I'll tell you what I I think I
- 28:59got, I promise, all guarantees that we've been talking 25
- 29:02minutes now already. We will talk about this in a
- 29:06minute. But like, I know you can
- 29:07disagree with this, but when we got to The Woman Who Fell to
- 29:10Earth and it was just normal people being introduced in a
- 29:15normal way, it was so refreshing for me because I was like, fine,
- 29:19suddenly we've got characters that aren't just fucking plot
- 29:22functions and mysteries, and I get it.
- 29:24It can be really exciting, it can be done really well.
- 29:27And some of this throughout the Moffett run is done really,
- 29:29really well. I just I just don't think he can
- 29:32get it from A to B to Z in a satisfying way.
- 29:36It wasn't just the woman who fell to earth, though.
- 29:38Yeah, Bill and Bill hasn't got any sort of universal.
- 29:43I know she fucks a puddle at the end.
- 29:45But wasn't it it? Was it?
- 29:46Was it was? All a bit weird When she turned
- 29:48into a puddle and had that lesbian affair and all that,
- 29:50that was very strange. The pilot is brilliant because
- 29:53you're like, wow. It's like this brand new energy
- 29:57that like feel and character in the room that, as you say, isn't
- 30:01necessarily a plot function. I never feel like Amy's a plot
- 30:03function. I think it's something that's
- 30:06cast on her upon time. Where's Clara?
- 30:08It's. It's it's river during that
- 30:09period. Yeah, no, that's fine, because
- 30:13she's not. She's just drifting in and out.
- 30:15I never, I never really sort of engaged with her as a character
- 30:18because she is always, like I said to you before, talking in
- 30:22the scrutables all the time and mysteries.
- 30:24Yeah, which is why she is so good and the Angels take
- 30:27Manhattan, because it's the one time where the doctor with her
- 30:30basically on the same page and at the same point.
- 30:33No, I love the bit where they're not where he's.
- 30:36Going. You know I will never see you
- 30:38again. Amy and Rivers going.
- 30:40Go on, go and be with him. And I'm like yes.
- 30:43Yeah, yeah. No.
- 30:44One point where I. Genuinely feel like she's her
- 30:46fucking daughter. Well yeah, it's a weird one
- 30:53there because they are my daughter, but it is just by
- 30:56title, isn't it? Because they don't really.
- 30:59It's not actually brings her up, forget the metals thing.
- 31:02It's just like, bring her up. Let's not go with Eric.
- 31:05Well, we covered the entirety of the Steven Muffet era.
- 31:07Now to close this episode of a hamster with Blood Men.
- 31:12Yeah, come on, let's press play and watch this.
- 31:14We could just keep talking. The travel.
- 31:17But you are right, there are so many talking points in this era.
- 31:21Yeah, and and and like, yeah, I think this happens anytime you
- 31:25talk about a series, seven story.
- 31:26People say series sevens like simple, basic, whatever.
- 31:30Anyone Whoever does a podcast 76. 789 and 10 All of them I.
- 31:35Think I feel like because The Stand Alone Your Head Series 7
- 31:39feels like probably the simplest of the lot, and there isn't like
- 31:42a plot arc or anything. But you listen to any podcast on
- 31:44Series 7 and they'll have started the exact same way, the
- 31:48way we'll have done. Do you like 7A or 7B?
- 31:51Do you like Clara or this? Do you like where it goes?
- 31:54Do you like how it starts the 50th?
- 31:56You can't talk about any of these stories about it.
- 31:59I'll tell you what, right. So I've just, we will start a
- 32:02second. I'll just put out a Twitter
- 32:05thing about a can you hear me commentary I'm doing right and
- 32:09there's a sequence at the end of that and I think chip or savvier
- 32:12than people think he is. And is Graham saying to the
- 32:16doctor, I'm really scared that my cancer?
- 32:19I have seen this. And the doctor basically going,
- 32:23I don't know how to react to this.
- 32:25I'm going to go over here and try and think of something
- 32:27clever to say to you or something that you're and people
- 32:30really hate. And it's super divisive, OK?
- 32:34And I love it because I've seen it, you know, I've absolutely
- 32:36seen that. And I've I've dealt with some
- 32:38pretty heavy things and I've seen people not be able to have
- 32:41that conversation. But I feel like the Steven
- 32:44Moffett era as a whole is that scene.
- 32:48It's very divisive, but and he knows he's being divisive with a
- 32:53lot of the stuff he's doing. But boy, it's going to get
- 32:55people talking. Yeah, he definitely knows he's
- 32:58being divisive because he's always trying to do something
- 33:01that will subvert expectation, which is maybe why it sort of
- 33:06appeals more to fans as it goes on.
- 33:08But yeah, and he's also, he does have to react against the four
- 33:11years that Russell T did because you couldn't just keep doing the
- 33:14same thing. Like it is almost harder to keep
- 33:18it going. I'm not saying it was.
- 33:20Easy when he. Took it to such a a sort of
- 33:23populist place. You know where it was at his
- 33:25zenith with the public. Exactly.
- 33:28And I think he did. Even though, you know, sort of
- 33:31drifted off and people did generally drift off, I still
- 33:34think he did bloody amazing to keep it going with the amount of
- 33:37people watching as he did when he left six.
- 33:39Years as well. Like Series 10 of a show, it
- 33:44doesn't really happen. Where Are We Now, Series 14?
- 33:49Yeah. So we're already talking about
- 33:5215. Yeah, it's great.
- 33:54Should we press play? Yes, we should.
- 33:59OK. Just just count you in always
- 34:03321 go we go. A stunning CGI opening.
- 34:10Yeah, We start on Skyro, which is just back.
- 34:14I always quite like there to be some exponential going straight
- 34:17in with the criticism. I didn't quite like there to be
- 34:19an explanation. You're always doing that,
- 34:22especially when I was younger. I can see why.
- 34:25You wouldn't, was post Time War Skyro isn't it?
- 34:28There's been sort of decimated by the Time Lords.
- 34:30Yeah, it's probably in spin off media that was destroyed and
- 34:34come back about 700 times so. Yeah, every Big Finish release
- 34:38each month. Do you know who this woman is?
- 34:44It's Rodney Booze from Resurrection of the Daleks.
- 34:47It's exactly the same character that's not aware as a Dalek
- 34:51duplicate until the moment hits. Brilliant.
- 34:55I love this. The the back stories of Dalek
- 34:59prison camps that we've never, ever seen.
- 35:02They're mentioned a few times in Moffat's era.
- 35:06You did see one in Destiny and the Daleks, you know, we had a
- 35:09ragtag bunch of extras in space clothing doing sort of mining.
- 35:14If we've never seen in the new shows, you can imagine it'd be
- 35:16really very good and dark. Why have we never done Daleks in
- 35:20a prison? Or Daleks run in a prison and
- 35:22like like The Great Escape, but with Daleks?
- 35:25We've done prison like Daleks as prisoners, but we've not done
- 35:28the other way. Yeah, we The Great Escape with
- 35:31Daleks is pitch right there. I'm Russell T and your Mickey
- 35:35Mouse money. You can pull this off.
- 35:38Got to stop saying Mickey Mouse money.
- 35:43Should we, should we dive in a little bit with Rory and Amy
- 35:46being divorced then? Because we're.
- 35:47If you go, come on, I had my say if you're going.
- 35:50To start straight away, yeah, I I think it's a good new,
- 35:54interesting place to start with them, especially a couple that's
- 35:57meant to be solid and be like that, yeah, the companions, the
- 36:03look, that gun coming out of the hand looks terrible by the way,
- 36:06but. It's not the knob coming out of
- 36:08her head. And they didn't even look at
- 36:11this and go, whoa, this didn't work.
- 36:12And they do it again in time with the Doctor.
- 36:14Yeah, yeah, I know. But I think it gives a harder
- 36:18edge to Rory that we've probably always wanted.
- 36:21I quite like that, you know, the way he's sitting there with the
- 36:23papers. Yeah, and it is hair in this
- 36:26episode. It's great.
- 36:28I get sexier as he goes on. By the time he leaves an
- 36:32angel's, he's really hot. You know not.
- 36:34Quite as sexy as he did in with those glasses in the impostor
- 36:37Astronaut you. Oh.
- 36:38Yeah, it's a dig though. But I noticed actually she's the
- 36:42one in moments of danger. She's the one that keeps
- 36:44shouting his name out, so she's sort of reaching out to him and
- 36:48he's the one that's holding back from her.
- 36:52And I know it seems rash that they've just suddenly got
- 36:55divorced and he seems to have taught had a conversation, but
- 36:58isn't that how all relationships breakdown?
- 37:01It's just miscommunication and. Or a stupid act her.
- 37:07Her reason for miscommunicating, it's because it's really, really
- 37:12personal to her. Because she can't have kids and
- 37:14she wants how? Can't she have kids?
- 37:17She says it's because of what happened at Demons Run, so
- 37:20Madame Kavarian's like experiments or whatever, and she
- 37:23knows that Rory wants kids, so she's giving him up.
- 37:26That is that. So it's almost a deeper love
- 37:28story. Post Series 6, there is a lot of
- 37:31sort of emphasis as Amy the Mother isn't there.
- 37:35Yeah, but it's again it's because of growing arc in series
- 37:405 is done. I mean the dialects put that bus
- 37:44driver in there dialect duplicate bus driver.
- 37:48You don't have to think about it.
- 37:51Did you see that light bulb flickering?
- 37:54I was, Oh yeah, light bulb theory.
- 37:55When I watched this because there was a light bulb
- 37:57flickering in town called Mercy as well, I was confused.
- 38:00The flickering light bulbs was going to lead to something.
- 38:03Yeah, light bulb theory. There was loads, wasn't there?
- 38:05And it is it just a little indication that the Weeping
- 38:08Angels are coming back in the finale.
- 38:09Is that all? You know what it.
- 38:11Is it's Steven Moffett guy and there's people looking out for
- 38:13this stuff. Well, yeah.
- 38:14Let's give them something and it gets them debated and then
- 38:17they'll be able to hide into nothing.
- 38:19But by the way, that shot of Rory looking out the spaceship
- 38:21window and seeing Dalek spaceships looks amazing because
- 38:24it because it looks quite natural.
- 38:27I think a lot, a lot of the story.
- 38:29Like we talked a little bit earlier and I said I had some
- 38:31issues with this. Visually, the direction I think
- 38:34is stunning and the. Direction is amazing.
- 38:37Nick Koran, is it? Yeah, yeah, I think every.
- 38:39I think he's so in tune with his vision.
- 38:42Yeah. As Hollywood as possible, my
- 38:44objection is, is when we get to the asylum and all those
- 38:47fabulous old Daleks are barely. Yeah, this.
- 38:52Oh God. Look, doesn't the Parliament
- 38:53just look amazing, though? Forget how dumb it is for a
- 38:58second. Like that whole spectacle I went
- 39:01at this point. We'd never seen so many Daleks
- 39:04on the screen. But I don't know, maybe I was
- 39:07just a little bit bored of the scale of seeing the hundreds of
- 39:10thousands of Daleks at this point.
- 39:14Again, it's the Dalek was so refreshing for me because it was
- 39:16just one again for the most part.
- 39:18It's a bit more interesting with them all, just like not
- 39:21attacking. I think it's very nice that they
- 39:24do remember the fat licks as well.
- 39:26Yeah. Oh yeah.
- 39:27No, I like that. Yeah, because I'm a big fan of
- 39:29the Paradigm, obviously, because no one else likes them.
- 39:34But they give them a sort of little paint job here, don't
- 39:36they? They're like darker red and
- 39:38darker colours because of the criticism.
- 39:43No, I think again, like the Paradigm.
- 39:45Daleks had so much storytelling potential.
- 39:48I I think that's the like the timeless child thing, you know,
- 39:51it had a lot of potential and. It was realised, yeah, well they
- 39:55they just got, they basically got bullied out of doing
- 39:57anything with them. But like the Eternal, what the
- 40:02hell did the Dalek Eternal do? That's a that's a great story.
- 40:07I can imagine you there. How old were you watching
- 40:09Victory of the Diets, writing down all their names?
- 40:11Yeah, for scrimping out a back story, you.
- 40:13Could have You could have a story just with Dalek scientists
- 40:16doing things. I think if the design had worked
- 40:21for people, I don't think it works for many people, then they
- 40:24would have gone down that route. I I think if the design of work
- 40:26we would have unlocked a whole like era of brand new Dalek
- 40:30stories. And but to Mark Gaseous, who I
- 40:33don't think is the most experimental writers but
- 40:35actually was trying to push him in a new direction.
- 40:38Yeah, OK, so we got Osbourne now.
- 40:43So this is the first real shock of the episode.
- 40:49And to be honest, I was sat there watching it with my mum
- 40:51and for like 10 minutes we're just going back and forth.
- 40:54She's going, that's the New Girl.
- 40:56And I'm like it. It can't be.
- 40:59You were sitting here watching this with your mum of China
- 41:01Jenna, Common looking fat. Smoking hot?
- 41:04You must have had a phone run for a quick pillow, but yeah,
- 41:09like I. Don't think she's never looked
- 41:10more gorgeous than. This.
- 41:12No. Oh, she gets close in, like when
- 41:15she goes for the date. And listen, she looks absolutely
- 41:17beautiful, you know? What this proves, it proves that
- 41:20Doctor Who fans actually can keep their fucking mouth shut.
- 41:22Because this was revealed in a screening and nobody said
- 41:26anything. Yeah, but it is such a good
- 41:29shock, isn't it? Like, it's not even the pre
- 41:32credits you think you're about to go into The Dalek story.
- 41:34It don't happen very often. That sort of passing of the
- 41:37torch does it, where you have the newbie and the old
- 41:40companions. Yeah, it's sort of in the same
- 41:44story and so weird that the sequence later where Rory and
- 41:47Clara are talking and I'm sorry, Oswin, and I'm like, this just
- 41:50feels so strange. It's two ears.
- 41:52Talking. Yeah, and I know I say like,
- 41:55Amy's my favorite companion stuff.
- 41:57I remember watching this, and by the end of it, I just wanted Amy
- 42:00to leave because Oswin was so good.
- 42:03She was so compelling, Sexy. For me.
- 42:05The end of Series 9. I just wanted Clara to leave.
- 42:10But like, yeah, I was just she just seemed so fresh.
- 42:14You you're right when you said in Impossible Astronaut is he's
- 42:18just hiring the sexiest women. I think so.
- 42:21I do think so. And give her the smartest you
- 42:25know, wittiest things to say. Yeah, I mean, yeah, So that was
- 42:31the first big surprise after we'd sort of gone, OK, actually
- 42:35it is. It is her.
- 42:36And then later on, obviously we get this surprise that she's a
- 42:40Dalek, which I'll talk about later on, But that was fuck,
- 42:43that blew me away. That did.
- 42:45And then the third surprise is that she explains and you just
- 42:49left the kid. Fuck it out.
- 42:53I I remember watching this the first time and I was so psyched
- 42:56because of the Doctor Who cover for the Asylum and the Daleks,
- 43:00and when I watched the episode, I was so disappointed with that
- 43:03part of this, but so riveted by the Jenna Coleman part of this,
- 43:09it's absolutely saved it for me. And especially that bit of the
- 43:12end where he comes in and she's the Dalek.
- 43:14I was just like, that blew me away.
- 43:16Yeah, it blew me. Did did you guess at all?
- 43:18No, not at all. Yeah, there's so many visual I
- 43:21was watching. I'm going.
- 43:22She's literally looking for a Dalek ice stall throughout.
- 43:25The whole thing, Yeah. And you know, something's up.
- 43:29I know absolutely adore the whole mystery about the sea
- 43:33flight. Where does she get the milk and
- 43:35eggs? Because you might not like this,
- 43:37But watching it the first time, watching it every time and the
- 43:40first time though, I was like, I couldn't stop thinking about it
- 43:44and like. That I think that's a really
- 43:45clever way of of suggesting that she isn't what she says.
- 43:50I hate the lined extra one minute.
- 43:55Oh God. You're getting desperate with
- 43:56that word. It's all right.
- 43:58It's all right. I do like this where he goes,
- 44:01what, you're going to push me down that hole on the?
- 44:04Planet. That's sort of your MO.
- 44:09But yeah, like I was thinking, you know, you're watching all
- 44:12this with Daleks and bangs, I think.
- 44:14And I all kept thinking about was where does she get the milk
- 44:16and eggs? Because they say it a few times
- 44:19to the point where it corrupted my mind a little bit.
- 44:22Because when in the witch's familiar, when the doctor pulls
- 44:26out that cup of tea and he's like, where did I get the tea?
- 44:29And the doctor just accepted, I was waiting for the payoff in
- 44:31that. And I was like, well, we still
- 44:36don't. Find that way.
- 44:37We've already established by the end of the season that's that
- 44:39done way, but we aren't dealing with anything.
- 44:41Anymore. I'm still waiting to know where
- 44:43you got that cup of tea from. Do you remember we watched The
- 44:47Rings of Akuten and, you know, we said about how pissed poor
- 44:50that audience was to listening to that little girl singing?
- 44:53You can see that same robot about 15 times in the audience.
- 44:56Yeah, I think this is a better version of that.
- 44:58You know, with all these Daleks, sort of.
- 45:00Well, you can't tell, can't you? That's why, Because it's all the
- 45:04same. It is stunning.
- 45:09Now look at look at that. You know, visually it is.
- 45:12And it, you know, the the Osman thing is you.
- 45:15You all right, you took into the surprise of it being Jenna
- 45:18Coleman, but the mystery itself, you don't have enough time to
- 45:22figure it out because there's so much going on the surprise if it
- 45:25happened. So it does work on that first
- 45:27watch, and it has that beautiful thing of just being a really,
- 45:31really simple twist that you didn't see well.
- 45:34I think, I think there's sort of two layers of, I don't know what
- 45:38to call it really, you know, Moffett's ability of making you
- 45:41think you're watching one thing and then you're watching
- 45:44something completely different. But that is making you look in
- 45:48that direction where really you should be looking over there at
- 45:51the. But that's it.
- 45:52The misdirection is the story about the asylum of the Daleks,
- 45:56which everyone wants more from. But actually, this is the story
- 46:00of Oswald. Isn't it?
- 46:01But I think one of those cheats works because the the basic that
- 46:04all the publicity for this episode is, is the asylum of the
- 46:08dialects, every dialect ever in Doctor Who.
- 46:11Yeah, that's that's what he's trying to make you look at.
- 46:13Yeah, I mean, expecting. And actually with that plot, all
- 46:18you get is just a load of zombies and that's pretty
- 46:21dreary, I think quite boring. But then underneath that you've
- 46:25got this, and that's what this is genuinely in terms of the
- 46:29season, what this is all about. Yeah, And it's, you know, it's
- 46:33it's mainly about Amy and Roy's relationship and the mystery of
- 46:37Clara, but it's just hidden in this big asylum.
- 46:41But I think, I think it's, it is really fun.
- 46:45Like I know you said it'd be good to see them just explore
- 46:48and figure it out. But then just getting chucked at
- 46:51a planet and go and explode it, it's it's quite good.
- 46:56It's the Great Escape backwards, isn't it?
- 46:58You got to remember, I'm just a low fuddy Duddy.
- 47:00Doctor Who fan from the 70s. It's it's all, I mean like yeah,
- 47:05most Muffet things it's trying to do something new.
- 47:08I think it really, really works. It's a proper action.
- 47:13Flies by 50 minutes. I I think that this is one of
- 47:17those episodes that in a series that was sort of plugged as
- 47:21Hollywood blockbuster of the week, that feels like a
- 47:25Hollywood blockbuster. Yeah, this is one of the few, to
- 47:29be fair, that does. And weird, the thing that gives
- 47:32it the scale, it's not this Parliament because like you
- 47:34know, we've seen CGI before. It's that fabulous, snowy
- 47:38landscape when they land on the planet.
- 47:40Yeah, they filmed that in Spain, didn't they?
- 47:42They filmed it back-to-back with a town called Mercy, apparently.
- 47:45Like it was really hot there. And then round the corner
- 47:48there's just this snowy landscape.
- 47:52But it's. Supposed to be snowy then?
- 47:55I think so, yeah. I think it is meant to be.
- 47:58OK, oh, I thought this was lame. It is known that the Doctor
- 48:02needs companions. That's the only reason they pick
- 48:05them up. What's wrong with that?
- 48:09How thoughtful of you, darling. I'd rather just not have the
- 48:16explanation. I know they probably debated
- 48:18that. Shall we pick up the companions?
- 48:22Let's take a vote. When I was younger, I really
- 48:26like this. Then fall into the planet down
- 48:28this tube. I probably would hate it though.
- 48:34I don't know, it's just a bit it's it's that too silly, isn't
- 48:37it? That full so it reminds.
- 48:38Me of that fabulous. Bit in forest from the dead when
- 48:41he jumps into the light. Beam.
- 48:42With the Sonic screwdriver. Amazing.
- 48:44Yeah. Oh, yes.
- 48:47You know, you and I, we're gonna have to do another Rusty Davis
- 48:49story. You know, now I've seen your
- 48:52list. I know the ones that you really
- 48:53like. So pick.
- 48:55Pick one or the other one. Pick the doctor's daughter.
- 48:57Good. Excuse me?
- 49:02Free Rogerman had the zenith of her career when.
- 49:04She was coming. To that water I went no.
- 49:10Another like really sort of blunt criticism I always say is
- 49:14that this would have been better with Ciderman.
- 49:17So what do you think about that like?
- 49:19I came I did have some thoughts about this, because I do find
- 49:24the idea that the dialects are converting humans.
- 49:26That is kind of the sideman's MO.
- 49:29Yeah. And dialects are supposed to be
- 49:32about racial purity, and so we're sort of discard discarding
- 49:36sort of the initial idea of the dialects to make this work in
- 49:40this story. It's been done before, though,
- 49:42in like revelation of the dialects we've got.
- 49:44And in. Yeah, by the way, so it's not
- 49:48unprecedented, I think. But no, I I like what they're
- 49:54converting humours into Daleks. It works fine.
- 49:57You got a season opener? Asylum of the Daleks is more of
- 50:01a grab than Asylum of the Cybermen, I think.
- 50:03Yeah, what you could just do with Asylum of the Cybermen have
- 50:07the Mondassian Cybermen. And then the Moon based
- 50:10Cybermen. The Revenge of the Cybermen.
- 50:11Cybermen. Yeah, they're already like, I
- 50:15don't, yeah, I just don't know what you can particularly do
- 50:17with it. You'd just be running from room
- 50:19to room away from insane people. Plus you couldn't make the sou
- 50:23you know the souffle thing with delete, can you?
- 50:26You need exterminate. You do need the eggs.
- 50:29You know when you said they don't let you forget about that?
- 50:31There is a really clever prompt, isn't there, When Rory wakes up
- 50:35in the asylum and that one's just going eggs, Eggs.
- 50:43Oh dear, Oh dear. Yeah, I like like.
- 50:48I can completely see, Oh no, did you see that?
- 50:53He shot that there and it was all this lovely snowy Vista, but
- 50:57unfortunately just at the top of the shot there was a load of
- 50:59bushes, snow on them. Yeah, that says the gunslingers
- 51:07are out the corner that time. It's hard to think you can have
- 51:11these various climb, we're going down another hole and somebody
- 51:15with some experience in that. And there's eggs down the hole.
- 51:18Oh my God, you ever had any experience of this look glue?
- 51:24Glue ectoplasm on. The phone I've never had glowing
- 51:27green glue. OK, so do you understand people
- 51:36objecting when we were promised every single Dalek, The fact
- 51:40that most of the classic series Daleks are in the shadows,
- 51:44covered in crud and barely visible?
- 51:47Yeah, and again, it's the sort of thing that don't promise
- 51:52Doctor Who fans every time again, but if it's if it's not
- 51:55going to do that because you know, a normal person watching
- 51:58this wouldn't give a shit. But yeah, it was it was so big,
- 52:02wasn't it? It was on the front of Doctor
- 52:04Who Magazine every Dalek ever and I think they they try and
- 52:07make up for it in the which is familiar.
- 52:09Oh. For sure.
- 52:09That's why they're everywhere and you've got the special
- 52:12weapon. Do you know what that?
- 52:13Annoys me as well because it all looks so clean and there's no
- 52:18atmosphere to it. So you've got all these weird
- 52:20looking Daleks in these very sort of 1960s pristine sets.
- 52:26I'm like. And it also it makes sense here
- 52:29because it's like there are meant to be from different
- 52:32points in times and got insane, whereas on Skyro why they will
- 52:36be of different cases I'm not really too sure.
- 52:39I do think they missed the trick, you know though.
- 52:41But you could have done some bash It crazy with, you know,
- 52:44insane Daleks. I know, I know, there's there is
- 52:47more potential. I wish you know that that.
- 52:49Fabulous spirit with the ice storm coming out of the snow.
- 52:52Yeah, I just wanted that to be a Dalek.
- 52:54You know, that was sort of going wee.
- 52:55You. Know I stalk out.
- 52:58I think the first time I watched it may be the only sort of.
- 53:02The grumble I had was I wish the insane Daleks hadn't all been
- 53:06asleep, like if it had been them all awake.
- 53:11And he just works, wakes up one of them and goes exterminate.
- 53:14Well, they all do that normally anyway.
- 53:16Yeah, although the scene with the ballerinas is really good
- 53:20when she starts going a bit mental.
- 53:23I do, though. I know, I know.
- 53:25Years ago, I can see another version of this story with the
- 53:29TARDIS landing in the snow, them discovering this spaceship and
- 53:33the corpses inside and all of that without any of the sort of
- 53:36exposition beforehand. It's all just a bit less fun,
- 53:39though. Yeah, less fun, but it's more
- 53:41creepy. Yeah, no, I think that you are
- 53:45talking like a classic FC fan. I totally AM.
- 53:48You want you want the Season 13 Court of Asylum, The Darlings.
- 53:53Yeah, do you know what, though? Weirdly enough, all my gestures
- 53:56go out the window because then I watch The Flux, which plays in
- 53:59very similar ways. And yeah, it's weird.
- 54:03Yeah, I'm a hypocrite. We all are.
- 54:06We all are. That's the one thing we're
- 54:08learning and during these commercial.
- 54:10Podcasts. I do think there's great
- 54:12atmosphere in these sequences though, with these corpses.
- 54:15Yeah, the idea of the nano cloud thing is it is interesting as
- 54:19well. They're like you literally can't
- 54:21land on the planet without being turned into a Dalek or a Dalek
- 54:24Knob head. So you call it a knob head.
- 54:30So it's what happened is this planet, this spaceship, Alaska,
- 54:34landed on the planet, and then they took Clara out and wired
- 54:38her into the Dalek. Yeah, she was.
- 54:39Yeah, because they wanted to use her brain.
- 54:41What was her rank? Junior Entertainments Manager or
- 54:47something like that. Entertainments Manager.
- 54:49Yeah, something like that is it? No, she's belly dancing for the
- 54:53crew or something like that. Well, making sea flows.
- 54:58Oh yeah, she's very good. The sea flay isn't the sea flay.
- 55:00The sea flay is the recipe. The tile of the diox wouldn't be
- 55:05Asylum of the Diox without souffle.
- 55:07It just would be Asylum of the Daleks.
- 55:12What's the Karen here? So I think the little Dalek
- 55:16zombies have just stolen Amy's watch that the protector from
- 55:22the nano cloud that turns people into Daleks, which becomes very
- 55:25important in the divorce plot in about 10 minutes time.
- 55:28Yeah. Now you tell me now what you
- 55:30were telling me about this Sort of how clever it is that the
- 55:32Doctor sort of figuring it out as he goes along, what's going
- 55:35on between Amy and Rory and then fixes it all?
- 55:37Yeah. Discuss that.
- 55:38I think it's really clever because a broken marriage, it
- 55:43isn't the sort of problem that the doctor should ever be able
- 55:46to solve, but he manages to do it in a very muffety clever way
- 55:53because she says, I think around here you can't just fix a
- 55:56marriage that you can fix a bow tie.
- 55:58And it's a really small detail, but then he basically makes them
- 56:03argue and communicate, which is what they've been lacking and
- 56:07realise that there isn't a problem which gets them back
- 56:08together. And then, yeah, you just get
- 56:10that one cut of the doctor fixing his bow tie and it is so
- 56:14good because he's not even had to, he's not had to even have a
- 56:18speech or anything. It's just a little he's just
- 56:22doing it on the side whilst fighting the Daleks, it's
- 56:25actually. Two, there's two references to
- 56:27the bow tie before the beer the end.
- 56:29She also mentions his bow tie. She goes, oh he's he's realised
- 56:33that there's something wrong with us as well whilst he's
- 56:35talking to the parliament and he does so with his bow tie there
- 56:39as well. Yeah, Yes, he does.
- 56:41It's in every time. It's sort of in reference to
- 56:43their relationship. Yeah, that's.
- 56:46The sort of detail he gets spot on.
- 56:50Yeah. And it's it's subtle.
- 56:52It's like, I don't think I've, I've noticed it first time
- 56:54around, but then when I've watched it again and seen it,
- 56:57I've got, Oh my God, it's even better than I thought.
- 57:02God, you see those black and white salt?
- 57:03As you know, classic Doctor Who fans who love black and white.
- 57:06Look at them on that screen. They look fucking ghoulish.
- 57:09They just throwing off the Rolex.
- 57:15Yeah, I think it it it sometimes feels like because the Daleks
- 57:18are all like asleep, that there isn't much action in this.
- 57:21But we do get the whole Rory sliding under the door.
- 57:24We do get the Doctor doing the self destruct thing with it.
- 57:28We do get the ballerinas and him saving it from and saving Amy
- 57:31from it. So there's enough like set
- 57:33pieces of action. It's just it's just you don't
- 57:37get that promise of an insane Dalek do you?
- 57:40Don't get Dalek going fucking mental like bat shit
- 57:45schizophrenia. The the fact that you can't see
- 57:49those other Daleks is my only objection, because I love the
- 57:52water dripping down and the shadows.
- 57:56And you know, there's a thing I was complaining about in Series
- 57:586. It's all a bit too dark, but
- 58:00actually you've got the contrast of the dark and the light and
- 58:02there's the snow outside and the parliament, which is very well
- 58:06lit. It's probably the water and the
- 58:09dust and everything, which is why the the classic ones are
- 58:12just hidden away because it'll have been like collectors and
- 58:14stuff that contributed. I just.
- 58:17I don't know. I feel as if the director maybe
- 58:19didn't get the memo that they were supposed to be sort of
- 58:21prominent. Or just.
- 58:23Maybe. Maybe Moffett didn't have faith
- 58:26in those old designs. Probably sounds more likely.
- 58:30He was very, very hesitant about Mondassium.
- 58:32Wasn't he for for years? Brilliant.
- 58:34They look at the rest they've ever looked in the new series.
- 58:37You can see why you'd be hesitant about them.
- 58:39But yeah, I mean that bit in well enough in time with the
- 58:43sidemen, like sat around saying pain, pain, pain.
- 58:47That almost is the sign of the Cybermen.
- 58:49Really. That's as creepy.
- 58:52As you can as well. You are.
- 58:54And Genesis of the Sidemen as well.
- 58:56Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's ticking a lot of boxes and
- 59:00the 2 masters too. Oh, that is great.
- 59:03It was great to have them all. Of our geeky families.
- 59:07This bit's great again. It would just subtly, gradually
- 59:11have been turning roaring to an action hero.
- 59:13Oh. Nice cut over the series. 70 is
- 59:15the best. Acting wise and both character
- 59:19wise, he just gets better and better.
- 59:21I think he was. A little bit awkward about him
- 59:22in those first couple of episodes he did, wasn't he?
- 59:24Yeah, 11. Fowler and Vampires of Venice.
- 59:28When he's on equal footing with Amy, he's almost better than
- 59:32Amy. But when he's that like, yeah,
- 59:34nervous guy in Series 5, Amy's superior for me for.
- 59:38The one I love his scenes with his dad in the next episode.
- 59:43You know, I love Amy. She's so smart and dinosaurs on
- 59:46the shape. She's figuring out there's a
- 59:48saloon ship and all the. I just think they're
- 59:50characterized so well in this house and it's not, not for me
- 59:54to usually say that sort of thing.
- 59:56No, yeah. That Oswin is again, I think
- 1:00:03because she's having such a good time, like she's cooking, she's
- 1:00:06flirting, she's cracking jokes again, You don't ever think that
- 1:00:09anything bad's happened to it. Why is it then, that she doesn't
- 1:00:11know she's a dialect? That she thinks she's still a
- 1:00:13person. I think because is it she's gone
- 1:00:17so insane that she's just imagined this, like this happy
- 1:00:22life. She's so insane.
- 1:00:24She's a manic Laura, I understand.
- 1:00:30Although do you know what? Can I just throw in another one
- 1:00:32of my sort of long term objections that both Oswin and
- 1:00:36the governess are infinitely more likeable and compelling
- 1:00:41than dreary Al Clara that we get from?
- 1:00:44The Saint John. I think that's pretty universal,
- 1:00:47isn't it? I I also agree.
- 1:00:49People agree with. That, yeah, I think the
- 1:00:51governess one is the one I. Would love that Governess 2 have
- 1:00:55been enough. To ask you, yeah.
- 1:01:01You've been great. Yeah, they're perfect.
- 1:01:04And and it it's really annoying because the snowman as it is, is
- 1:01:09a really good episode and her dying twice is a really good
- 1:01:12mystery and wait to end. But fuck me, yeah, we could have
- 1:01:15just had that one. You do have to ask twice, but
- 1:01:19it's still yes. No, because wasn't she wasn't.
- 1:01:25It wasn't her name, Beryl. She was written into some of the
- 1:01:27scripts in 7th Day. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:01:29And then they've changed it. But because this one's great,
- 1:01:34but I don't know how far you could take this one.
- 1:01:36She's a flirty, sexy thing and I just think after a couple of
- 1:01:40episodes you might get a bit great.
- 1:01:42And where is the Victorian one? Just had a great character and
- 1:01:46really and her and Matt Smith were just brilliant together.
- 1:01:50When she went up that ladder into the clouds, you know, Yeah,
- 1:01:54she could never take no for an answer.
- 1:01:56And she whips him out of his. Yeah.
- 1:01:58And they're they're both sparking off each other with
- 1:02:00cleverness. And it's brilliant.
- 1:02:03I I I think Matt Smith and Coleman had some moments after
- 1:02:08that. I just didn't fire me up in the
- 1:02:12same way. Yeah, I do.
- 1:02:14I I do really like them together.
- 1:02:16It's more like, oh, you're so kooky, oh, you're so funny,
- 1:02:21rather than like a deep character thing where you you
- 1:02:24suddenly get Capaldi and it's like, do you think that
- 1:02:26portraying me means that this is so different?
- 1:02:31We get really, really deep. But I mean, I think Clara's best
- 1:02:35running series I I think. Yeah, I I do agree.
- 1:02:38I think she's better. Getting your bloody TARDIS and
- 1:02:41you go away. I love that bit so.
- 1:02:43Much. I'll smack you so hard you would
- 1:02:46generate I. Mean when I was watching this
- 1:02:48guy scan on. Yeah, I love this ballerina.
- 1:02:51Is in slow motion. We were saying like, yeah, we
- 1:02:54haven't got that insane Dalek, but we have got the fact.
- 1:02:58But the the insanity of the situation's coming across with
- 1:03:01this ballerina sequence. The potential of the idea of
- 1:03:07insane Daleks is just so strong. But what can you do with them
- 1:03:13apart from just the scream? Exterminate and they go a bit
- 1:03:16crazy. Like they've gone so mad that
- 1:03:19they're all good and they're playing little kiddie games.
- 1:03:23Yeah. They're playing train trains.
- 1:03:29I could just see one in the back there look the blue and white,
- 1:03:32blue and white spike spotted Dalek from the sort of the early
- 1:03:37years. Yeah, there's.
- 1:03:39About. There's a scene when he's run
- 1:03:41out of the asylum and it's split second, There's an explosion,
- 1:03:45split second. You'll see the one from
- 1:03:47Resurrection of the Daleks there that that's a bit later on.
- 1:03:51It's not enough though, is it? That's not enough to wank over,
- 1:03:53is it? No, not not for reals.
- 1:03:56We need more. No, they're constantly trying to
- 1:03:59go for scale in this thing. Like we were pushed down a
- 1:04:03massive tunnel to the planet, then we were pushed down a
- 1:04:06massive hole centre of the planet.
- 1:04:09They just look back like, honestly, it's scale all the way
- 1:04:12in this episode. Yeah, it's a it's an adventure
- 1:04:15action blockbuster, isn't it? It's Doctor Who.
- 1:04:19Daleks die hard. The my contradiction within this
- 1:04:25episode is I really dislike the Amy Rory stuff, but I love the
- 1:04:30scene where they start talking. I think it's beautifully played
- 1:04:34and really well written. The thing is if if they just
- 1:04:39fallen out at the beginning and then had that.
- 1:04:42Yeah, I think that's my issue. People wouldn't have an issue.
- 1:04:45I just want to see the dramatic act of why this occurred.
- 1:04:49But then that's not as strong, is it?
- 1:04:52Oh, Amy And Rory fell out. It's not that strong as a
- 1:04:55storytelling point compared to Amy.
- 1:04:57Rory getting divorced? It would be very.
- 1:05:00Strange to start a season with a pair of them talking about not
- 1:05:03being able to have children. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:05:06I think it's justified. It's a justifiable reason.
- 1:05:09And it makes again, it's sort of putting to bed this thing that
- 1:05:14Amy doesn't really like Rory. It's putting it to bed.
- 1:05:17By saying Amy wants to give Rory up because she loves him so
- 1:05:21much, I mean. How long should I buy that?
- 1:05:25I don't give you children, so I'm going to push you away
- 1:05:28instead of just having a mature conversation.
- 1:05:33I'm going to put you through emotional hell to avoid putting
- 1:05:36you through emotional hell, all right?
- 1:05:39I I think I do sort of buy it. Did you see all that?
- 1:05:42Those gunky Daleks, then? Yeah, that was the same wasn't
- 1:05:45it? That was I think.
- 1:05:47I think that's great when he when he activates the self
- 1:05:49destruct and then puts it on reverse, blows them all up.
- 1:05:52I can now studying Jenna Coleman there for a second as well.
- 1:05:55She's sort of lounging in her chair, in her red cocktail
- 1:05:57dress, with her hair sort of running across her face.
- 1:06:00Now you asked me a question in the possible astronaut.
- 1:06:02Do I think Karen Gillan is the sexiest Doctor Who girl?
- 1:06:06I'm not convinced anymore. I think it might be Jenna
- 1:06:08Coleman that. Wasn't me.
- 1:06:09That was Dylan, OK? Honestly, you straight men
- 1:06:13coming on there, I think I might be on the turn, you know?
- 1:06:16You know these gorgeous women? I mean, she looks absolutely
- 1:06:20stunning here. It's one of the times when she
- 1:06:23looks really. Every time they put her in red,
- 1:06:26remember her in Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS.
- 1:06:28Oh yeah, amazing. Gorgeous.
- 1:06:32But she has that run at the beginning of Series 8, where she
- 1:06:34looks fantastic. I'm.
- 1:06:37Not sure she ever. Looks No, no, no, we're we're
- 1:06:40saying it like she's got some dog sort.
- 1:06:42Of levels of sexiness. She's almost pretty high, you
- 1:06:45know. Sometimes she's just breaking
- 1:06:47the scale. Yeah, I suppose if you if you're
- 1:06:52putting Amy and Clara against each other, suppose Clara
- 1:06:55doesn't have to wear really short skirts to elevate her
- 1:06:58sexiness. Maybe.
- 1:07:01Maybe. Now, when Claire was wearing
- 1:07:03that suit in time high, she looks really hot.
- 1:07:07I think. I think with Clara.
- 1:07:09I just wish I'd seen more of a vulnerable side to her in a run
- 1:07:13than I did. Yeah, I think it just wasn't the
- 1:07:17time, was it? Almost the 50th sabotaged it
- 1:07:20because we just need a companion that would just roll with it,
- 1:07:24especially for these blockbuster episodes.
- 1:07:26And so you didn't have the time to develop that side of it,
- 1:07:29which are why is why she goes into becoming the Doctor more, I
- 1:07:32think. And it wasn't Euna said to me
- 1:07:35that somebody posed the theory that between Series 7 and Series
- 1:07:408, we're just watching a different splinter of class.
- 1:07:42Yeah, yeah. That's a great idea.
- 1:07:45Yeah, I totally buy that. Yeah.
- 1:07:47Because if it's the same one, then again a load of off screen
- 1:07:50development that we're not Privy to.
- 1:07:52When he pulls throughout the time stream, he's she's just
- 1:07:55just a different side, which maybe explains why her dad looks
- 1:07:58different he'd. Be more brave.
- 1:07:59You know, they've done a whole season where there's a different
- 1:08:01splinter every week. Well, it it did feel like that
- 1:08:05could. I can't remember.
- 1:08:07For some reason I I remember the time thinking that series 7B
- 1:08:10might all be set in Victorian England and like it'd be part
- 1:08:14and also. Been like the Crimson Horror by
- 1:08:16the 1st. Yeah, but like 8 episodes of the
- 1:08:19Crimson Horror. As long as we can have Diana Rig
- 1:08:23and Rachel Sterling in them all. Yes.
- 1:08:27Oh, is he figuring it all out now?
- 1:08:28Is this where he figures it all out about?
- 1:08:31I don't think he he figures it out properly until he's there.
- 1:08:35I even like the fact he didn't use the name Clara.
- 1:08:38He used Oswin just to confuse us even more.
- 1:08:40So we're like, what is this? A mother?
- 1:08:42A sister? What's going on?
- 1:08:43Yeah, yeah and. And then, because he never sees
- 1:08:47her, he doesn't recognize her in the snowman until she says the
- 1:08:51middle name, which was also That's neat.
- 1:08:55Yeah, but then we get those bizarre pervy scenes in The
- 1:08:59Rings of Akutem where he goes back and starts looking.
- 1:09:01At the kids there's nothing, so. It feels very.
- 1:09:05Strange, the way he's watching. Her playing on the springs.
- 1:09:13Have they talked yet? I'm, I'm.
- 1:09:16I'm lost. No, it's when he leaves the room
- 1:09:19now. So I mean in that shot then you
- 1:09:24can literally see the watch on Amy's arm.
- 1:09:29It's already on there, but he's saying that she's going to be
- 1:09:33converted. Now.
- 1:09:33This intensive care bit of the Daleks isn't again, doesn't work
- 1:09:38for similar reasons as the two gripes we've had.
- 1:09:40One, it's like these are Daleks from Spiridon and all the other
- 1:09:45places, but they're just bronze Daleks.
- 1:09:48That doesn't work. And also, if they're in
- 1:09:50intensive care they should be elevated in insanity.
- 1:09:53But they're just the same. They should have had those
- 1:09:56invisible dialects from Spirit on.
- 1:09:58You know, the one at the end of it.
- 1:10:00Well, you watched that recently, didn't you?
- 1:10:03Yeah, fairly good. Must sit for all the time
- 1:10:04though. So there he is.
- 1:10:05Look, he's there on the screen. I know the the whole, the whole
- 1:10:12bit of the of this argument is, yeah, about who loves each other
- 1:10:16more and what that exactly means.
- 1:10:19You are on Rory's side because you've always thought Rory does
- 1:10:22love Amy more. But if Amy would give him up so
- 1:10:25that he could potentially have a family that is almost a deeper
- 1:10:29form of love. Again, it just solidifies.
- 1:10:31There was a great couple. I I often question whether
- 1:10:36Moffett gets the ending so his story is right or satisfying the
- 1:10:40ending of the angels take my hand.
- 1:10:42I know I said this the other day where she says together or not
- 1:10:45at all and she chooses Roy. I just think it's perfect.
- 1:10:48It's the perfect end to the same.
- 1:10:50Regardless of like the whole New York can't go back thing.
- 1:10:55Well, no. And then she chooses him again
- 1:10:57when he gets taken back and she's like, you know, with with
- 1:11:00River's permission and the Doctor, you know, obviously
- 1:11:02bawling his eyes out. Yeah.
- 1:11:04And I think that is the best way for it to run because you have,
- 1:11:08you know, it's always been that thing does.
- 1:11:10Would she ever choose Rory over the Doctor?
- 1:11:12And then you finally get. Yeah, and that's her fully grown
- 1:11:15up. Then from when we knew as a
- 1:11:16little girl, so that. And then what does the Doctor
- 1:11:18do? He goes back to her being a
- 1:11:20little girl because that's who he always was, the imaginary
- 1:11:24friend. And this is like her actual
- 1:11:27adult life now. This beautiful look at this.
- 1:11:31Look at how raw this is between the two of.
- 1:11:33Them I've performed brilliantly. They are great together.
- 1:11:38Yeah, they really are. I think when it first started,
- 1:11:40you're like, oh, Amy wouldn't go for Rory.
- 1:11:43But like by now, by this point, you know he's.
- 1:11:45Been developed to a point where. Yeah, they're both really suited
- 1:11:48towards each other and now you get the shell off and fixing his
- 1:11:51bow tie and it's just so good. It's so clever.
- 1:11:59God, I don't even want to say someone's too good for a show,
- 1:12:03but Doctor Who is like, essentially like a bit of
- 1:12:05ephemera she is. Almost too good of an actress.
- 1:12:08To. Be a companion in Doctor Who
- 1:12:12but. We were lucky to have we.
- 1:12:13Were we've had a lot of look. You hear an interview.
- 1:12:16She's quirky as fuck, like she lost us a right simpleton in
- 1:12:20interviews and yet she plays this sassy bitch, you know?
- 1:12:25Really well. You see how she's got out in
- 1:12:30America now? No.
- 1:12:32Yes, she's got a house built that looks like a Scottish house
- 1:12:36in the middle of bloody Hollywood.
- 1:12:37Oh. Wow.
- 1:12:38Well, you know, she's out in a big box now, Guardian as the
- 1:12:41Galaxy. Yeah, fair enough.
- 1:12:43She deserves it. Is she at the biggest success
- 1:12:48story of any actor? Probably because it was she was.
- 1:12:53Well, depends if you count Davidson in a way, yeah.
- 1:12:57I don't think David Teller's been in movies has made.
- 1:12:59David Teller hasn't cracked America, but he's like the
- 1:13:02biggest fucking actor in the UK. Yeah, that's true.
- 1:13:06Karen Gillan's not really been in the UK.
- 1:13:08I think she's had the biggest cinema success.
- 1:13:11Probably, well, even ever Morbius.
- 1:13:16Mark Smith made some dodgy choices.
- 1:13:18When he left. Doctor Who?
- 1:13:20It's to the point where you think he must be doing it on
- 1:13:22purpose. Then he got the crown, didn't
- 1:13:25he? And I think that's where people
- 1:13:27really started taking him seriously.
- 1:13:28I'm really happy that happened because it yeah, I felt like he
- 1:13:32was probably 1 performance away from just throwing in the towel.
- 1:13:37It will never get better. What was?
- 1:13:38The Terminator one. Yeah, Terminator Genesis.
- 1:13:41Think flops. He did.
- 1:13:42Pride in Prejudice and Zombies that flops.
- 1:13:44The weird thing was when I saw him like even down the gym and
- 1:13:48he's really trying to sort of muscle himself up, but he's such
- 1:13:51a twink. He's so thin it just didn't look
- 1:13:54right. He's.
- 1:13:55Really good in last night in Soho, if you've seen that.
- 1:13:59He's good in that one. Replaced Christopher Isherwood
- 1:14:01and you see him having loads of anal sex.
- 1:14:05Incredible bit of telly. Have you seen that one?
- 1:14:09No. Cheer it out, it's great.
- 1:14:11Oh well. Check out immediately.
- 1:14:14His. Performance is brilliant.
- 1:14:15That's why he's a good actor. Right.
- 1:14:18And so it also makes sense how Chloe's just been able to run
- 1:14:23the whole asylum as well. But yeah, it just doesn't give
- 1:14:26it away. Somehow we've seen her look for
- 1:14:29a Dalekai stuck. We've seen her like, destroy
- 1:14:33these Daleks and just help them all the way through.
- 1:14:37And you're still thinking, wow, she's just clever.
- 1:14:40So when this opens up into a big white room in a second, it
- 1:14:44really did. My jaw drops.
- 1:14:47I just remember the sort of intercutting with her in all the
- 1:14:50wires and just thinking it was the most gruesome thing I'd ever
- 1:14:54seen. Like she's oh it's just and The
- 1:14:58thing is you did know the IT felt like the episode was
- 1:15:01building 2 A twist. Well, it's just.
- 1:15:04Most muffins do feel as if they're building Toy I.
- 1:15:06Just never guessed it would be there.
- 1:15:08Oh, and look, she's all excited. She's packing our stuff.
- 1:15:11I'd say good. And yeah, we take the piss out
- 1:15:16of him a lot, but Nick Briggs, his performance as the sad Oswin
- 1:15:20Dalek in a minute, it's actually really good as well.
- 1:15:23So he's. Going I I'm not a Dalek.
- 1:15:24I like I'm not you. Know and they're like, why do
- 1:15:26they hate you so much? Holiday is ever worth forgetting
- 1:15:32that Briggs really pushed the envelope with some of his Dalek
- 1:15:36voices in the new series. Yeah, it's only a bit annoying
- 1:15:40now because we've had 13 years of it.
- 1:15:43Well, you would just. All of those big finishes where
- 1:15:45he's chatting away to himself for hours on end.
- 1:15:48Yeah, you. We would just like this shot of,
- 1:15:51well, the shot of, you know, just Clara's face with the tears
- 1:15:53in her eyes. Oh, I think this shot going.
- 1:15:56Yeah, the. Room onto the Dalek is great.
- 1:16:01He just suddenly realized she's a dog.
- 1:16:03Why is it chained up? Because it's mad.
- 1:16:05Yeah, it's like the most mad one.
- 1:16:09The Clara Dalek, of course. I believe it's an insane control
- 1:16:16freak. You know, Matt Smith plays this.
- 1:16:23And again, This is why it wouldn't.
- 1:16:26This wouldn't work if it was the Cyberman, because you go
- 1:16:29straight away while she's been converted into a Cyberman.
- 1:16:34And that's right. It shows you the bit where the
- 1:16:36Dalek captured her, so she's up against the wall there.
- 1:16:38Then it shows you the bit where she's wired in.
- 1:16:40Yeah, kind of. Visually you get the whole
- 1:16:42story, but just in sort of bits and pieces.
- 1:16:45And that's why she couldn't ever have the milk and eggs for the
- 1:16:49sea fight. It's just.
- 1:16:53So quirky that. Yeah, it's brilliant, I.
- 1:16:57Mean. Where did he think that up
- 1:16:59making? An omelette.
- 1:17:00One day. A day.
- 1:17:01And oh, you know, it's. Definitely started with X
- 1:17:05actually, and then thought what's like a unique thing that
- 1:17:07can that if we say this word, you instantly think of this
- 1:17:11character because you can't think of the word souffle
- 1:17:13without thinking of Clara ever as a Doctor, they found.
- 1:17:16Look at that with her. All the wires around her.
- 1:17:19I just think that's really ghoulish.
- 1:17:22She plays this bit great. When she's like on the edge,
- 1:17:24she's turning. X and I really like.
- 1:17:32Then suddenly you start examining the room that she's
- 1:17:34been in this whole time and going.
- 1:17:37There's visual clues everywhere. She's.
- 1:17:40Yeah, yeah, crazy. But especially the viewer screen
- 1:17:45that she takes out, you know? I mean, yeah, it's so obvious,
- 1:17:52but it's just enough misdirection for you not to
- 1:17:54notice. Oh, and that's two twists within
- 1:17:57one episode, isn't it? The fact that she was in it in
- 1:17:59the 1st place and this. Yeah, and then?
- 1:18:02Most whose stories can't manage one, you know.
- 1:18:04Well, like, yeah, the first one at the time was like my favorite
- 1:18:08twist of all time. Until half an hour later when we
- 1:18:11got this one and I was like blown away by two of the best
- 1:18:15Doctor Who twist of all time being in this episode.
- 1:18:18Oh. I'm not sure anything will ever
- 1:18:20peak, the macro turning up in gridlock for as a classic Doctor
- 1:18:24Who fan. I was going no, no, I'm so
- 1:18:30excited. The evolved macro.
- 1:18:33Oh, mind you, that first master review as well that got me out
- 1:18:36of my seat. Derek Jacoby.
- 1:18:39No, no, but. Think of all the history I've
- 1:18:41got with the show. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:18:42I think that one you follow. You knew that the Master was
- 1:18:45coming back. You might not have known it was
- 1:18:47him. But like, I mean the whole thing
- 1:18:50though, that actual sequence is one of the best sequences in
- 1:18:53Doctor. The the whole Yana thing is
- 1:18:56fucking brilliant. It does that weird thing, you
- 1:19:00know, where you go from being super amiable in your face to
- 1:19:02being evil as hell in a second. Yeah.
- 1:19:06Yeah the John SIM. One in world enough for time
- 1:19:08really got me sat there crosses fuck through one of one of a
- 1:19:12great a great doctor episode going.
- 1:19:14Where's John SIM? He said.
- 1:19:17He said he'd be in this and. Then oh, you.
- 1:19:20Did it I. Really.
- 1:19:21Did. You must have felt like a right
- 1:19:22idiot. But I loved being like an idiot.
- 1:19:25I loved being that wrong footage.
- 1:19:27I got it about two scenes before he was revealed.
- 1:19:31I saw a look in his eye on something and I was like, that's
- 1:19:34Johnson there, They're doing Anthony, Amy on us.
- 1:19:37Just now. It's brilliant.
- 1:19:38So Heavenson is a very it's a bit like this where there's so
- 1:19:43many clues of what's going on, but you just you just don't ever
- 1:19:49think. Like In Heaven said, you don't
- 1:19:51ever think the Doctor would die. So you can't put it, put it
- 1:19:55together. And this.
- 1:19:55I don't think you'd ever think. Well, she's the new companion.
- 1:19:58She can't be a Dalek, so you just never think of it.
- 1:20:02I'm just thinking my way through the new series now, when twists
- 1:20:04actually genuinely hit me, but the Dewan reveal got me out of
- 1:20:09my seat as well, no? Well, we'll talk about.
- 1:20:13We will. Talk.
- 1:20:14About that, I thought his performance beforehand was so
- 1:20:17convincing, I've never for once thought he was the master until
- 1:20:20that was revealed. I don't like how out of their
- 1:20:24field The 11 is. I know that's part of what, it's
- 1:20:27part of the charm of why people like it, but it's just like, Oh
- 1:20:31yeah, I you said you're a shit runner back in the day, but you
- 1:20:35caught that plane pretty quickly.
- 1:20:37And then? No, it's like the worst bit is
- 1:20:39when she goes oh oh, that's why I chose my name.
- 1:20:44She didn't know you? But I just think the acting is
- 1:20:47top dollar. Anyway, sorry, we're not talking
- 1:20:50about Spy Fall today. So it ends to this idea that the
- 1:20:53she's wiped the Dalek's minds off the Doctor and so they don't
- 1:20:58know who he is Again, it's like the paradigm stuff.
- 1:21:01This would unlock a lot more interesting Dalek stories, but
- 1:21:05the next time we see the Daleks, it's just restored.
- 1:21:08I know him all again. So what was the fucking point?
- 1:21:11I know, I know. He can't.
- 1:21:14Stick the landing for some reason.
- 1:21:16I don't know why. I I have a theory of my own that
- 1:21:21the 50th got in the way of whatever he wanted to do.
- 1:21:25So like we end season six with him saying I'm going to step
- 1:21:28back into the shadows. And then series seven starts
- 1:21:31with him, you know, like wiping himself out of databases
- 1:21:34basically, so you can sort of reset the character.
- 1:21:37But then I love that little victory thing that Robbie just
- 1:21:40said when he's won over. But then because the 50th is
- 1:21:44there, because he has to be a big hero in it, the Daleks have
- 1:21:50to know who he is for it to work and all that sort of stuff, we
- 1:21:53have to just go back to the Doctor being a a God like hero
- 1:21:56again. Well, you can't have nobody
- 1:21:58knowing him in. The 5th year?
- 1:22:00Yeah, exactly. But if it had been like any
- 1:22:04other couple of years you could have, I think he could have done
- 1:22:06something really interesting with it.
- 1:22:09I'll say this for the 50th anniversary year.
- 1:22:12He very smartly split the season up this year, so you had two
- 1:22:17distinct stories tell being told in A and in B.
- 1:22:21Yeah. Oh yeah.
- 1:22:23Which meant you could have them as mini seasons in their own
- 1:22:25right, rather than a long story that just felt as if there's a
- 1:22:29massive gap in the middle. Yeah, and he got the he got the
- 1:22:34actual 50th story absolutely right.
- 1:22:37But he also got the like the whole event, like November 2013,
- 1:22:44was just one of the best size spheres.
- 1:22:47Up to Hayfan, it really was everyone.
- 1:22:50Was just a great. Rules.
- 1:22:51And for it, there was that Save the Day trailer.
- 1:22:53There was the Docky drama. There was the 5:00-ish Doctors,
- 1:22:57which was like, that was the perfect.
- 1:22:58They say you just watched the main event and then you and you
- 1:23:01have a couple of beers and that was the perfect sit back
- 1:23:055:00-ish Doctors. Oh, everything about is
- 1:23:07brilliant. If we get anything that comes
- 1:23:10close to the 50th this year, it will be a hell of a time sphere.
- 1:23:14It's obviously fun again. I can only imagine how long it
- 1:23:18took you to scrub your underwear after that Paul McGann 10 minute
- 1:23:23sequence was released. I It was one of those where I I
- 1:23:29got onto Twitter and it was like Paul Mcgann's back.
- 1:23:33Like it was. I didn't watch the thing.
- 1:23:35And then it happened. No, I got a message saying don't
- 1:23:38go online, click this link. So a friend saved me from being
- 1:23:44spoiled. I was like.
- 1:23:47Yeah, yeah, I mean, I I, yeah, we acted great to at the time,
- 1:23:51but probably not as much because there wasn't.
- 1:23:53I hadn't listened to any Big Finish.
- 1:23:55I'd watched the TV movie a couple of times.
- 1:23:56I loved the fact he was back, but it wouldn't be like if he
- 1:23:59came, Like when he came back in the power of the Doctor, I was a
- 1:24:01lot more like, holy fuck, he's wearing a costume.
- 1:24:08I do. You know what we were talking
- 1:24:09about? We mentioned their doctor a
- 1:24:11couple of times in a possible Astronaut Day in the moon and
- 1:24:14didn't tell. A couple of disparaging things.
- 1:24:16I don't know if he's all that keen on that all.
- 1:24:18Right, Dylan. Yeah, surely.
- 1:24:21I don't know. We might.
- 1:24:22We may have to reconvene, you know, for they are the Doctor.
- 1:24:26I would love to have one. Voice in there who's not sure.
- 1:24:31I mean, I've got a few minor objections about it, but I think
- 1:24:34the fact that he managed to pull off the impossible task and
- 1:24:38please, about 98% of Doctor Who fandom is a feat that has never
- 1:24:43been achieved before or since. No, I think he gets it exactly
- 1:24:47right and. Weight of expectation on him as
- 1:24:49well, you know. Yeah, I think any short Givens
- 1:24:53shortcomings on the series, you would take that for that special
- 1:24:58time of the 50th anniversary. I think you'd you'd take a
- 1:25:03journey to the sense of the TARDIS or a Cold War.
- 1:25:06That was my one bad thing. Was the lead up to that was
- 1:25:08those dreary fucking episodes in the series. 7 BI was like, oh,
- 1:25:11OK, is this how we're celebrating this?
- 1:25:14Or this weird guy who's not an Android and Willow good as the
- 1:25:18emperor of the universe. Without it's just so strange
- 1:25:22that they set out to make something because the invasion
- 1:25:25of time was so disappointed and ended up making something
- 1:25:28probably worse than the invasion of Time.
- 1:25:33But you're right, though, Got that whole mix of adventure in
- 1:25:35space and time, the 5:00-ish Doctors.
- 1:25:39Yeah, I think that was sort of our peak.
- 1:25:41It was after that we started sliding down the bank a little
- 1:25:44bit. Yeah, I don't.
- 1:25:47Know what the overall rating was for that similar cast around the
- 1:25:50world. But I don't think any Doctor
- 1:25:52Who's had as much viewing figures as they had the Doctor.
- 1:25:55Probably. Almost definitely not, Wasn't
- 1:25:57it? It was.
- 1:25:57It was around like 95 countries. It was similar casting.
- 1:26:01I don't know what the ratings were, but yeah.
- 1:26:04And am I right in saying it is one of three occasions where
- 1:26:09that Doctor Who was #1 most watched programme of the week?
- 1:26:12Was it? I know, I know.
- 1:26:14Journey's End was. And I can understand why.
- 1:26:17I'm not sure the woman who Felt to Earth was as well you know,
- 1:26:22that week. I think it was huge, wasn't it?
- 1:26:23It was over 10 million. The woman who felt to earth.
- 1:26:26More than that, I think. I think it was 12 or something
- 1:26:28like that. That's over 10.
- 1:26:35Luke We had a a long ramble before we started the episode,
- 1:26:40and we're going to have a slight ramble now.
- 1:26:42Now we've finished the episode. As we list our three fabulous
- 1:26:47things, Asylum and The Darling, this will be less of a challenge
- 1:26:51for you than it will be for me. Yeah.
- 1:26:53Oh, my first one is the little mysteries that seem little, but
- 1:26:58actually the entire story, The milk and the eggs is such a good
- 1:27:05simple thing and it's resolved with a simple resolution, but
- 1:27:10that but it being a huge twist at the same time.
- 1:27:14They're also into Dalek. And when I was watching this I
- 1:27:17was always thinking about where she got the milk and the eggs
- 1:27:19from. It was a good simple mystery.
- 1:27:22And again, like the bow tie, fix it.
- 1:27:25Fixing your bow tie like you fix the marriage, the little
- 1:27:28touches, the little subtleties of little mysteries is
- 1:27:33definitely my favorite thing about this.
- 1:27:36My first one is going to be my ultimate contradiction in this
- 1:27:41episode, in that I don't like the soap part of it.
- 1:27:45And yet the soapiest scene in the entire fucking thing, which
- 1:27:48is Amy and Rory coming together and talking to each other, is so
- 1:27:52moving. I think the the two actors have
- 1:27:54such great chemistry and I think back to vampires of Venice,
- 1:27:59where I just, I don't see the same sort of chemistry there.
- 1:28:02I think they're they're sort of feeling their way in.
- 1:28:06I don't. Know are they being written or?
- 1:28:08I don't know if it's just early days for them acting alongside
- 1:28:11each other, but somewhere before the end of the fifth season they
- 1:28:16just clicked as that pairing. Maybe it was Amy's choice.
- 1:28:21I'm not sure. I'm not.
- 1:28:23I'm not sure exactly where it was.
- 1:28:25I think like Pandorica, when they have that talk which ends
- 1:28:30with him shooting her in the stomach, that's that's quite
- 1:28:34that sort of starts to cement them and then he does the whole
- 1:28:36weight in 2000. It's.
- 1:28:37Awkward moment in any relationship when that happens.
- 1:28:41And she and you wonder why she can't have kids.
- 1:28:43That rise through series 6. You and I talked about that
- 1:28:46scene in A Good Man Goes to War where they all come together
- 1:28:49with the baby and the chemistry is amazing.
- 1:28:52You get like high drama, like the end of The Girl who No, not
- 1:28:56the Girl died. What's it called?
- 1:28:58The Girl Who Waited where he has to shut the door on the elder
- 1:29:03Amy. You know, Amy and Rory are not
- 1:29:07my favorite companions, but I think come the end of their run
- 1:29:11and certainly throughout this half season, that might be the
- 1:29:17best chemistry between two companion actors that we're
- 1:29:20going to see. Oh yeah, which it should be
- 1:29:23because they're a married pair. But they've got that.
- 1:29:27The actors have gone on that whole experience together as
- 1:29:30well. They've kind of travelled the
- 1:29:31world, you know, They've conquered America.
- 1:29:33Yeah, see two actors that are just so in tune with each other.
- 1:29:37Yeah. Anyway, that's my first one,
- 1:29:39hey. My second one is Oswin Oswald.
- 1:29:42What? I am.
- 1:29:43What? What?
- 1:29:44I'm sorry, but what? Like well.
- 1:29:45Choose. Know the obvious ones.
- 1:29:47You need to be more obscure so I can nick the obvious ones.
- 1:29:49What a blast of fresh air. Like she's just, she's there and
- 1:29:53you just want her in Doctor Who. Like off the bat it's it's
- 1:29:58almost upsetting that you have to wait another four or five
- 1:30:00episodes for her to come back, even if she comes back
- 1:30:03differently or whatever. Even better as well.
- 1:30:06Yeah, I know, upgrade. But yeah, just a really fun
- 1:30:11character. Looks amazing and yeah, gets an
- 1:30:16amazing sort of storyline in this where the the one thing you
- 1:30:20never think would happen to a new companion has already
- 1:30:23happened. That is just a great twist.
- 1:30:28My second one is going to be just how strong the direction is
- 1:30:34in this episode, because if I've got shortcomings with the story,
- 1:30:38I certainly don't with how it's realized.
- 1:30:41And in particular, I love those scenes out on the snowy waists
- 1:30:46in Spain, Yes, which I think without them it would still have
- 1:30:50a sense of scale. But I think it's just something
- 1:30:53about Doctor Who, you know, when it goes out on really sort of
- 1:30:56stunning locations. Yeah, no, definitely.
- 1:30:59We're doing it a lot more these days.
- 1:31:01In the old series. It's just we sort of Planet of
- 1:31:03fire. Every now and again you go
- 1:31:05somewhere that you know it doesn't look like a back alley
- 1:31:07in London A. Planet of Fire shoots itself in
- 1:31:11the foot by being both Lanzarotti and a planet that
- 1:31:13looks like Lanzarotti. Is that my mind so much I've?
- 1:31:18Never understood that. But no Nick Koran.
- 1:31:22As I said earlier, I think he's really in tune with Moffat's
- 1:31:25vision. Of.
- 1:31:26Like, we're going to throw something sort of visually
- 1:31:29spectacular and distracting at the audience every couple of
- 1:31:33minutes to keep him interested. And he just sort of constantly
- 1:31:37UPS his game. So yeah, you have the snowy
- 1:31:39landscapes, then you've got, you know, the sort of wide shots of
- 1:31:42the asylum or the dripping water, and then you've got
- 1:31:45fucking ballerinas in the slow motion you.
- 1:31:48Know it's all going on. There's a reason he gets the
- 1:31:5050th job, isn't there? Yeah.
- 1:31:52What was he do apart from these two?
- 1:31:54I think, I think he did angels. Which is really well.
- 1:31:58Done. I think I could be wrong.
- 1:32:00He did the God complex which is. One of my favourites of this
- 1:32:04year. Yeah, it's quite flashy.
- 1:32:06Yeah. I feel like he did some 7 P
- 1:32:10maybe, but he doesn't. He doesn't come back after the
- 1:32:1250th for that thing. What?
- 1:32:14He weren't going to top back, was he?
- 1:32:19My third thing would be the the Parliament of the Daleks.
- 1:32:25Less so the idea I'd I'd like if you.
- 1:32:27If you don't call it that, it doesn't really matter.
- 1:32:31Just the whole spectacle of it. I just remember being there,
- 1:32:34watching that trailer at 6:00 in the morning, thinking shit in
- 1:32:37hell. There's loads of him like
- 1:32:40Doctor, he looks amazing. I can't wait to watch that
- 1:32:43episode. And it was that shot of
- 1:32:46spaceships out the window and them all being in a big circle
- 1:32:50and a little bit of love for the Paradigm Daleks as well.
- 1:32:53They're just hidden in there. I'm half convinced, you know,
- 1:32:56because you were up half the night watching the sensor eyes
- 1:33:00that any trailer that dropped even, you know, starring Art
- 1:33:03Malik, you would have been, yes, this.
- 1:33:06Is amazing, right? It's true, but yeah.
- 1:33:11Oh no, I need to think of 1/3. One, don't I?
- 1:33:14There must be something else I like about this.
- 1:33:16I did really like Murray girls. Music again in this Yeah, I saw
- 1:33:20a playful, fluting music that he does every now and again.
- 1:33:23Yeah, that, yeah, that happens, yeah.
- 1:33:27I'm glad you know what I'm talking about there.
- 1:33:29Got in there first. So my now it can't be the
- 1:33:33Daleks. I didn't like that be anything
- 1:33:35about the the 1st 15 minutes because I didn't like that.
- 1:33:40You like the atmosphere on the Alaska with the zombies.
- 1:33:45I've kind of done the direction really, haven't I?
- 1:33:47Over old ground. Over the eggs.
- 1:33:49I've never struggled to find a third thing.
- 1:33:53Help. Me, the eggs.
- 1:33:56I don't like the ending with the whole Doctor Who nonsense.
- 1:33:58Oh, it's not nonsense. We.
- 1:34:01Did that a few times, didn't we? Do you?
- 1:34:02Remember when Dorian Maldevore was like dogdo?
- 1:34:06A question of what's he say? Hidden in plain sight.
- 1:34:10I knew you would know. OK then, my third Oh yeah, of
- 1:34:15course. How can I forget this?
- 1:34:17The one question that must never, ever be answered.
- 1:34:21Doctor Who? God.
- 1:34:23Well. They're self referential, you
- 1:34:29know? And then there's that.
- 1:34:30But it is building up the name of the doctor, isn't it?
- 1:34:33Wait, it's all. It's all a big bitch.
- 1:34:35What a fuss about that as well. They're going to reveal his
- 1:34:38name. They're trying to destroy the
- 1:34:40series. Yeah.
- 1:34:42And then he pulled the rug out again.
- 1:34:43He made you look in One Direction.
- 1:34:44No, it's the title. It's.
- 1:34:46Yeah, it's really clever, the subversion of it.
- 1:34:49Well, he is a clever man. Yes.
- 1:34:52My third thing is going to be Jenna Coleman, so not.
- 1:34:59Cheat. No, it's not a cheat and it's
- 1:35:02because I'm starting to fantasy era bit.
- 1:35:06No, it's because I have. I'm convinced that Jenna Coleman
- 1:35:11is probably the strongest actress to play a companion.
- 1:35:17This is why I'm all over the place with Clara, because I
- 1:35:21really don't like the Clara we get Lombard with.
- 1:35:25But Jenna Coleman is such a good actress.
- 1:35:26You can actually usually ride the floors and still enjoy the
- 1:35:31character, but when she's given really great stuff to do, like
- 1:35:35she is here like she's in the snowman, I'm really a few more
- 1:35:39off. I think flatline.
- 1:35:40Clara gets a great role, I think in Dark Water, yes, as half of
- 1:35:45that, she gets a great role. Like when she is given brilliant
- 1:35:49stuff to do like this, she's the best.
- 1:35:53I don't think she's the best. I do think she's very, very
- 1:35:56good. I think we we said before that
- 1:35:58Moffett must just cast the sexiest women.
- 1:36:01But I do think she's. As well.
- 1:36:04And Jeremy Coleman are probably the two strongest acted
- 1:36:08companions of the modern series. Yeah, although they don't break
- 1:36:14my heart the way Catherine Tate does.
- 1:36:16No, that's true. It's.
- 1:36:18Weird. Isn't it?
- 1:36:19It's weird why we say it's it's like people always say Capaldi
- 1:36:22is the best actor Doctor. And I always think, did he just
- 1:36:25say that because like the public perceptionist taste, probably
- 1:36:29not the best of the the new ones, but like, you can see
- 1:36:33where they're coming from. I don't necessarily agree with
- 1:36:35it, but I see where they're coming from.
- 1:36:37Catherine Tate, I expect the comedy stick so that when she
- 1:36:40reaches inside my chest, takes my heart out and squeezes it in
- 1:36:43front of me, I'm taken aback a bit it.
- 1:36:47Is weird because if you flip the roles, there's there's no, I
- 1:36:50don't think Jenna Coleman could make.
- 1:36:52You could do what Catherine Tate does.
- 1:36:55Catherine Tate definitely couldn't do what Jenna Coleman
- 1:36:58does. So yeah, it's why we say things
- 1:37:02like it's the best acted. I don't really know, especially
- 1:37:05when we're not actors. But I think, I think when you
- 1:37:08come away from Doctor Who, Jenna Coleman is probably the
- 1:37:11strongest actress and she's had some of the best of work.
- 1:37:14Karen Gillan's done a couple of big movies.
- 1:37:17Yeah, you know, that's not high art, is it?
- 1:37:19It's not like what Jenna Coleman was doing over in Victoria,
- 1:37:23which is some serious fucking acting.
- 1:37:25Yeah, I'm the Serpent. And a lot of sex as well.
- 1:37:28Did you watch that? And the Serpent, Yeah, I mean,
- 1:37:32I'll be going on it. Up a tree, I can believe it.
- 1:37:37It's always, it's always like that in historical dramas.
- 1:37:41Bugger and Steven Moffat should write that.
- 1:37:44Luke That was a hugely enjoyable experience.
- 1:37:47But where are we heading next? Oh, are we going back to 1989
- 1:37:53with Peter Tyler? Oh God, this is.
- 1:37:58Always ones you love and I don't.
- 1:37:59That's kind of really interesting.
- 1:38:01Like, I've never known anyone to really hate Father's Day, but I
- 1:38:07I used to think it's the worst one of series one.
- 1:38:09So I've got. We might have a bit of common
- 1:38:12ground, but I've changed on it a lot.
- 1:38:14Why did it come in your ranking? 7th. 7th.
- 1:38:19Out of the wall Seventh, Yeah. All right again, 7th. 8th I
- 1:38:24think. Actually, yeah, 8th.
- 1:38:26I've forgotten that I can't. Remember it?
- 1:38:28Really. In the last two or three years
- 1:38:30it's really I climbed up there and I go to it quite a lot.
- 1:38:35I I've. I've got like several specific
- 1:38:38reasons why I really dislike that.
- 1:38:40And some of it's to do with Paul Connell's writing, some of it's
- 1:38:44to do with the heavy soap, and some of it's to the fact that
- 1:38:47the plot is to make no sense to me.
- 1:38:49And I'll be trying to untangle that as we go through it, but
- 1:38:52I'll be fascinating. I mean, I I know why a lot of
- 1:38:54people do like it, because it moves them a lot.
- 1:38:57Yeah, I do find it really moving.
- 1:39:00Well, we'll have to unpack that together on another day.
- 1:39:03Yeah, we will. That just leads me to say thank
- 1:39:06you very much for once again telling me why.
- 1:39:09I'm wrong. Thank you Joe for being wrong
- 1:39:13about everything. It's.
- 1:39:17A weird thing. Give a platform for people to
- 1:39:19come on and talk about something that they love that you hate.
- 1:39:23Tell you why you're. Wrong.
- 1:39:25One thing I will definitely say is I am certainly looking at a
- 1:39:31lot of this stuff in with fresh eyes now and I'm certainly
- 1:39:36seeing more strength in stories I would have just written off
- 1:39:39completely and that alone makes the exercise worthwhile.
- 1:39:42Oh yeah, 100%. Well, thank you very much.
- 1:39:46Thank you. I'll see.
- 1:39:47You next time. Bye.
