- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is Monday.
- 0:15It's the 30th of March and we have almost reached the end of
- 0:19the third month of the year. Wow, how do we find ourselves
- 0:22here? But nevertheless, here we are.
- 0:24I am back. I'm back on home turf after two
- 0:28weeks away, standing out the front of a lecture room
- 0:31instructing our newest group of chaplains, which has been really
- 0:34wonderful. But man, that is a lot of
- 0:37talking and marking and preparing and being away from
- 0:41family and friends and routine and community.
- 0:44So it's great to be back. And this is a big week.
- 0:48This is Holy Week. This is the week that we move
- 0:51ourselves toward standing at the foot of the cross watching Jesus
- 0:56do this incredible thing, incredible thing where he takes
- 1:00on death front on and wins that victory for you and I.
- 1:06And so we are not going to be drawing Avon into a Friday
- 1:10reading this week, but it's going to be our Good Friday
- 1:12reading where we will continue in the story of Mark.
- 1:16And today follows on the story from yesterday.
- 1:19Yesterday was Palm Sunday and today is this glorious Palm
- 1:23Sunday reading filled with this incredible account of Jesus
- 1:26triumphant entry into Jerusalem. So friends, I am good to go.
- 1:31I'm trusting that you are too because you invited me into your
- 1:34day. So Holy Spirit, open us up,
- 1:37reveal your truth to us today as we open your word and spend time
- 1:43learning about you and from you because your word is alive and
- 1:49sharper than any 2 edged sword. Alright friends, let's do it.
- 1:54Let's read together Mark Chapter 11.
- 2:07As Jesus and his disciples approached Jerusalem, they came
- 2:10to the towns of Beth, Phage and Bethany on the Mount of Olives.
- 2:14Jesus sent two of them on a head.
- 2:17Go into that village over there, he told them.
- 2:19As soon as you enter it, you will see a young donkey tied
- 2:23there that no one has ever ridden.
- 2:25Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks what are you
- 2:29doing, just say the Lord needs it and we'll return it soon.
- 2:34The two disciples left and found a colt standing in the street,
- 2:37tied outside the front door. As they were untying it, some
- 2:41bystanders demanded, What are you doing untying that colt?
- 2:45They said what Jesus had told them to say, and they were
- 2:49permitted to take it. Then they brought the colt to
- 2:52Jesus and threw their garments over it, and he sat on it.
- 2:56Many in the crowd spread their garments on the road ahead of
- 2:59him, and others spread leafy branches they had cut in the
- 3:03fields. Jesus was in the centre of the
- 3:05procession and the people all around him were shouting.
- 3:09Praise God, blessings on the one who comes in the name of the
- 3:13Lord. Blessings on the coming Kingdom
- 3:16of our ancestor David. Praise God in highest heaven.
- 3:22So Jesus came to Jerusalem and went into the temple.
- 3:26After looking around carefully at everything, he left because
- 3:30it was late in the afternoon. Then he returned to Bethany with
- 3:33the 12 disciples. The next morning as they were
- 3:37leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry.
- 3:40He noticed a fig tree in full leaf a little way off, so went
- 3:44over to see if he can find any figs, but they were only leaves
- 3:47because it was too early in the season for fruit.
- 3:50Then Jesus said to the tree, may no one ever eat your fruit
- 3:54again. And the disciples heard him say
- 3:57it when they arrived back in Jerusalem, Jesus entered the
- 4:01temple and began to drive out the people buying and selling
- 4:05animals for sacrifices. He knocked over the tables of
- 4:08the moneychangers and the chairs of those selling doves, and he
- 4:12stopped everyone from using the temple as a marketplace.
- 4:15He said to them, The Scriptures declare My temple will be called
- 4:20a House of prayer for all nations, but you have turned
- 4:24into a den of thieves. When the leading priests and
- 4:28teachers of religious law heard what Jesus had done, they began
- 4:32planning how to kill him. But they were afraid of him
- 4:35because the people were so amazed at his teaching.
- 4:39That evening Jesus and his disciples left the city.
- 4:44The next morning as they passed by the fig tree he had cursed,
- 4:47the disciples noticed it had withered from the roots up.
- 4:51Peter remembered what Jesus had said to the tree on the previous
- 4:54day and exclaimed, Look, Rabbi, the fig tree you cursed has
- 4:59withered and died. And Jesus said to the disciples,
- 5:03have faith in God. I tell you the truth.
- 5:07You can say to this mountain, may you be lifted up and thrown
- 5:11into the sea, and it will happen, but you must really
- 5:15believe it will happen and have no doubt in your heart.
- 5:18I tell you, you can pray for anything, and if you believe
- 5:21that you've received it, it will be yours.
- 5:25But when you were praying, first forgive anyone you were holding
- 5:28a grudge against, so that your Father in heaven will forgive
- 5:31your sins too. Again, they entered Jerusalem.
- 5:36As Jesus was walking through the temple area, the leading priests
- 5:40and teachers of religious law and elders came up to him.
- 5:43They demanded, By what authority are you doing all these things?
- 5:48Who gave you the right to do them?
- 5:51I'll tell you by what authority I do these things.
- 5:53If you answer one question, Jesus replied, Did John's
- 5:58authority to baptise come from heaven, or was it merely human?
- 6:02Answer me. They talked it over among
- 6:05themselves. If we say it was from heaven, he
- 6:08will ask why we didn't believe John.
- 6:10But do we dare say it was merely human?
- 6:14For they were afraid of what the people would do because everyone
- 6:17believed that John was a prophet.
- 6:20So they finally replied, we don't know.
- 6:23And Jesus responded, Then I won't tell you by what authority
- 6:27I do these things. Oh Lord Jesus, we see so clearly
- 6:40in this reading that you, I'm not in the business of playing
- 6:43games. You are in the business of
- 6:45turning people back to you, back to the Father.
- 6:49You are in the business of encouraging us to forgive each
- 6:53other. You are in the business of
- 6:56walking squarely and intentionally toward that path
- 7:00of suffering, back into Jerusalem, back to Good Friday,
- 7:06because you love us and you want nothing more, nothing more in
- 7:10all of your life than to rescue us and make a way for us to be
- 7:16entirely at peace with you and in your presence forever.
- 7:21Ah, thank you Jesus for that outrageous love that you don't
- 7:25just pay lip service to, but you walk boldly towards your own
- 7:29death to prove your love for us and to win that victory for us.
- 7:36Ah, we love you and we just give ourselves to you.
- 7:40We are yours, we are your children, we are your servants,
- 7:45and our lives we offer to you as a living sacrifice, ready to
- 7:48serve you and your Kingdom. And we pray all of this in your
- 7:52saving name, Jesus, Amen.
