- 1:58Speaker 2: the Governor's Mansion in the Situation Room. And tonight, tonight, people, tonight,
- 2:04Speaker 2: we got a good one, the one and only Chris
- 2:07Speaker 2: Long Channel five KSTP sportscaster joining us for a very
- 2:13Speaker 2: very good interview a lot of topics. We spend just
- 2:17Speaker 2: over half hour talking with Chris about everything, and we're
- 2:20Speaker 2: gonna get to that in just the moment. Podcast is
- 2:23Speaker 2: brought to you by the one and only Seventh Avenue Pizza.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Get you some, as I'd like to say, the best
- 2:29Speaker 2: frozen pizza made from the best ingredients, hits the stomach,
- 2:34Speaker 2: makes it feel good, people. Seventh Avenue Pizza pretty much
- 2:37Speaker 2: everywhere across the state Upper Midwest. Now, the Nelson family
- 2:41Speaker 2: doing big things there with that business. So make sure
- 2:44Speaker 2: you support them because they support the podcast and they're
- 2:48Speaker 2: just good people as well. So shout out, get you
- 2:52Speaker 2: some Seventh Avenue Pizza. All right, quick takes here before
- 2:58Speaker 2: we get to the interview National Championship games, starting with
- 3:02Speaker 2: the ladies. Obviously I'm a little late to it, but man,
- 3:05Speaker 2: obviously the weekend semi finals, South Carolina Gino Arima acting
- 3:12Speaker 2: like a complete ass. South Carolina then just goes on
- 3:17Speaker 2: to get stomped by UCLA. Just too much size, I
- 3:21Speaker 2: think with UCLA and those ladies came to play and
- 3:25Speaker 2: South Carolina, they along with the size discrepancy that nothing
- 3:29Speaker 2: was falling, nothing was falling. So congratulations, Big ten sweep
- 3:33Speaker 2: for national championships Ucla Michigan the following night and yeah, same,
- 3:39Speaker 2: you know, second half especially did a really good number
- 3:42Speaker 2: on Yukon. And listen, I know Yukon Dan Hurley, a
- 3:47Speaker 2: lot of people don't like him. I don't know, dude
- 3:50Speaker 2: gets results. I mean, he lost this one, but he's
- 3:53Speaker 2: played what now, four of the past five or six,
- 3:56Speaker 2: you know, championship games and all that stuff. So props
- 4:00Speaker 2: to Yukon and the losing effort by Michigan. Man hel
- 4:04Speaker 2: to the victors, held to the victors, did a phenomenal
- 4:08Speaker 2: job and claimed the chip. It's that simple. So the
- 4:13Speaker 2: Big Ten running things, running things, throwing that football National
- 4:21Speaker 2: championship for India's It's still hard to say National Football
- 4:26Speaker 2: Champions and Indiana Hoosiers in the same sentence, but by god,
- 4:30Speaker 2: they are the Indiana Hoosiers. So a very stellar year
- 4:34Speaker 2: for the Big Ten and Michigan, by the way, in
- 4:38Speaker 2: the Frozen for as well, so they may get another
- 4:41Speaker 2: championship on the hockey side. And for my SEC listeners,
- 4:45Speaker 2: my SEC fans, hey, y'all still got the baseball title.
- 4:49Speaker 2: Props on that. All right, folks, let's get to it here.
- 4:53Speaker 2: Chris Long, phenomenal guy. Met Chris doing boxing of all
- 4:58Speaker 2: things downtown at the back when Showtime used to broadcast
- 5:03Speaker 2: and be in the boxing game and we had a
- 5:06Speaker 2: couple of local fighters that they were focusing on up here.
- 5:09Speaker 2: Chris was just real nice, you know, willing to just chat,
- 5:13Speaker 2: help you out do whatever, and just been a big
- 5:17Speaker 2: fan of his ever since. He does a great job
- 5:20Speaker 2: at Channel five and I highly implore you to check
- 5:24Speaker 2: him out, check out his work, follow him on social media. So,
- 5:28Speaker 2: without further ado, here on the Sports Done Right Podcast,
- 5:31Speaker 2: brought to you by Seventh Avenue, Pizza one and only
- 5:36Speaker 2: Chris Long. All right, everybody, what's going on? Vince Wright
- 5:43Speaker 2: Sports Done Right Podcast, Sports Governor's coming to you with
- 5:47Speaker 2: the one the only KSTP Channel five, Chris Long. I
- 5:54Speaker 2: met Chris covering boxing of all things down at the
- 5:57Speaker 2: Armory and got to talk with him, know him a
- 6:00Speaker 2: little bit. Great guy and awesome and very happy that
- 6:05Speaker 2: he's able to join us tonight. So Chris, thank you
- 6:06Speaker 2: for joining us.
- 6:08Speaker 4: I'm flattered, my pleasure. We've been talking about doing this forever.
- 6:11Speaker 6: List get me your famous rim.
- 6:15Speaker 2: It's coming. It's coming up. I'm gonna make a stop
- 6:17Speaker 2: up at the station for you and Doogie. I promise,
- 6:20Speaker 2: all right, So let's do this. Before we get into
- 6:23Speaker 2: the pro side of things, folks, Chris does a lot
- 6:26Speaker 2: of work for the state tournaments up here, hockey, basketball,
- 6:29Speaker 2: you name it, he covers it. So I kind of
- 6:32Speaker 2: wanted to delve into that a little bit. You know,
- 6:35Speaker 2: the hockey tournament obviously world famous, everything that goes along
- 6:39Speaker 2: with it, the haircuts and by the way, classic games
- 6:43Speaker 2: this past year. So just for folks that don't get it,
- 6:48Speaker 2: because you know, they may see it on a on
- 6:49Speaker 2: a story or even an ESPN or something, but can
- 6:53Speaker 2: you just explain to my listeners outside of Minnesota, why
- 6:59Speaker 2: this state hockey tournament at the high school level is
- 7:01Speaker 2: just so ingrained in the Minnesota sports site.
- 7:04Speaker 4: Yeah, it's it's first and foremost.
- 7:08Speaker 6: It's an absolute privilege for us to be able to
- 7:10Speaker 6: bring these things and just to play such a tiny
- 7:12Speaker 6: small part in just the pageantry that these tournaments all have.
- 7:18Speaker 6: And it's boys hockey is the big one, but it
- 7:19Speaker 6: really is all of it's football, it's girls basketball's boys
- 7:22Speaker 6: basketball's girls hockey. I think that they're and this is
- 7:28Speaker 6: going to sound like I'm blowing our horn, but this
- 7:30Speaker 6: isn't just forty five TV. This goes back to win
- 7:32Speaker 6: Channel nine had it before us, WCCO back in the day.
- 7:36Speaker 6: I think in Minnesota, you think it's like this everywhere
- 7:40Speaker 6: that you know, maybe the My brother lives in Indiana,
- 7:43Speaker 6: there is not an on TV broadcast of the Indiana
- 7:46Speaker 6: State basketball tournament.
- 7:48Speaker 4: My high school is a football powerhouse.
- 7:51Speaker 6: Back in Maryland, I watched them play for their state
- 7:54Speaker 6: championship this past fall. It was one camera up in
- 7:58Speaker 6: a press box with two guys talking, no scoreboard, no replays.
- 8:04Speaker 6: The ball carrier will run off frame. If the guy
- 8:07Speaker 6: running the camera wasn't paying, jerk back and forth. I
- 8:09Speaker 6: paid like fourteen ninety five to see that. And again,
- 8:12Speaker 6: this is not just forty five TV or Hubbard or
- 8:15Speaker 6: me or my crew or our crew. This goes back
- 8:18Speaker 6: to you know w CCO and what you know, r
- 8:20Speaker 6: J Frix and Mark Rosen and obviously Nanny's been part
- 8:23Speaker 6: of forever. Fox nine did an incredible job with it.
- 8:25Speaker 6: Actually was before they were Fox nine. So I hope
- 8:31Speaker 6: Minnesota and then you go to basketball and football, I
- 8:33Speaker 6: hope Minnesota understands how fortunate we are to have this
- 8:39Speaker 6: tradition and that that is a priority to the high
- 8:41Speaker 6: school league. And then it's been a priority to the
- 8:43Speaker 6: broadcasters that have had the privilege to do this all
- 8:46Speaker 6: these years. That's made it such a big deal. We
- 8:49Speaker 6: like to think we didn't start the fire of passion
- 8:53Speaker 6: for the tournaments, but we certainly try to keep it lit.
- 8:56Speaker 6: But this goes back, obviously to what the boys State
- 8:58Speaker 6: Hockey Tournament means, going back to when it was one
- 9:00Speaker 6: class and you know, Roso and Evelyth would come down
- 9:05Speaker 6: and Hibbing would come down and take on you know,
- 9:08Speaker 6: the big city schools.
- 9:09Speaker 4: Back in the fifties, sixties, seventies, and eighties.
- 9:13Speaker 6: Lost a little shine when it went to two class,
- 9:16Speaker 6: but it's still in terms of just a pageantry of sport.
- 9:19Speaker 6: It's just the one thing that our whole state stops
- 9:23Speaker 6: and watch. And you may not watch a single high
- 9:26Speaker 6: school hockey game all year, you may not know a
- 9:28Speaker 6: single player, you might not know half the team's mascots.
- 9:32Speaker 6: But when those games pop on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and
- 9:34Speaker 6: Saturday in March, if there's a TV nearby, the odds
- 9:37Speaker 6: are that the state tournament's on it, and it's just
- 9:42Speaker 6: it's just happened over time. You ask what goes into
- 9:44Speaker 6: that phenomenon.
- 9:45Speaker 4: I think it's just the state's love for hockey.
- 9:47Speaker 6: It's the availability of the broadcast, and let's not be
- 9:50Speaker 6: fool the talent level.
- 9:51Speaker 4: I mean, you're seeing every state tournament.
- 9:55Speaker 6: Twenty guys that are going to go on and girls
- 9:57Speaker 6: that are going to go on to play college hockey,
- 10:00Speaker 6: three or four that are gonna go play pro. So
- 10:02Speaker 6: the level of play is pretty darn good. And basketball
- 10:05Speaker 6: lately has certainly on both the girls and boys side.
- 10:09Speaker 6: Absolutely we've been seeing I'm sorry, I'm going on, you
- 10:12Speaker 6: get me talk about high school tourneys.
- 10:13Speaker 2: I'll take that's all right.
- 10:15Speaker 4: The girls and boys, the talent we've seen in the
- 10:17Speaker 4: girls and boys basketball tournament lately is equal, if not surpassed,
- 10:22Speaker 4: in any given year, what we've seen in the hockey tournament.
- 10:25Speaker 4: So it's a combination of passion, talent, quality of the broadcasts,
- 10:30Speaker 4: and just who are as in Minnesota. We care about
- 10:32Speaker 4: high school sports. They're important to us. I've loved working
- 10:35Speaker 4: here for twenty five years.
- 10:36Speaker 2: Yeah, and you do a great job. And you know,
- 10:39Speaker 2: speaking on the basketball side, because I actually sent out
- 10:41Speaker 2: a tweet that apparently has gone viral. It was just
- 10:46Speaker 2: a picture of Kaladel Lamine at the championship game the
- 10:49Speaker 2: other night, and for me, I just tweeted out, you know,
- 10:53Speaker 2: the greatest high school basketball player Minnesota's ever produced. Blah
- 10:56Speaker 2: blah blah blah blah.
- 10:57Speaker 4: And people wanted you to hear how wrong that was. Yeah,
- 11:00Speaker 4: they did a lot of I'm not saying I disagree.
- 11:03Speaker 2: I'm just saying no, no, no, there there, and and
- 11:06Speaker 2: there are definitely some you know, arguments to be made,
- 11:10Speaker 2: Ty Jones. You know, people are coming at me with page.
- 11:14Speaker 2: Obviously a lot of Kevin McHale fans from the Iron
- 11:19Speaker 2: Range apparently found my Twitter, and you know, all have
- 11:24Speaker 2: cases to be made, just for me, you know, it
- 11:25Speaker 2: was it was you know, Elamin. For you on the
- 11:30Speaker 2: basketball side, who was you know? And if you don't
- 11:34Speaker 2: want to give me one, to give me maybe two
- 11:36Speaker 2: or three of you know, Chris Lonk's top three from
- 11:40Speaker 2: the basketball side of high school.
- 11:45Speaker 6: Boy, let me give you two guys as one answer, Hedge,
- 11:51Speaker 6: Watching chet Holgern and Jalen Suggs play together was incredible
- 11:53Speaker 6: because you knew, you knew both those guys are going
- 11:57Speaker 6: to be in the NBA. I mean, Jalen Suggs was
- 11:59Speaker 6: such an credible athlete. Remember he was a state football
- 12:01Speaker 6: Player of the Year as a quarterback. You knew those
- 12:05Speaker 6: guys were going to be special, and it was so
- 12:07Speaker 6: much fun watching them play together. Can I loop in
- 12:13Speaker 6: Tias and Trey as one person?
- 12:15Speaker 2: Absolutely?
- 12:17Speaker 6: I think at first the first time I met Tias,
- 12:20Speaker 6: I think we went and did a story on him
- 12:21Speaker 6: when he was in.
- 12:24Speaker 4: Eighth or ninth grade. It might have been eighth, it
- 12:26Speaker 4: was probably ninth.
- 12:27Speaker 2: For some reason, that story is popping up in my
- 12:30Speaker 2: mind because that's, yeah, he started on the junior yeah,
- 12:32Speaker 2: at that eighth grade junior high even though he's on
- 12:35Speaker 2: the high school team, right right, Yeah, And I.
- 12:38Speaker 6: Remember we're doing the interviews with Tias. We're talking to
- 12:43Speaker 6: the coaches and talking to teammates, and somebody at some
- 12:45Speaker 6: point said, but look over there, that little guy might
- 12:49Speaker 6: be even better.
- 12:50Speaker 4: And it was Trey, and he.
- 12:51Speaker 6: Was three years younger, two years, but at the time
- 12:55Speaker 6: he would have been in fifth sixth grade. Watching those
- 12:58Speaker 6: two kind of grow up and the way they handled
- 13:02Speaker 6: I mean, the spotlight was bright. Remember there was an
- 13:04Speaker 6: ESPN game at Apple Valley team from Chicago came to
- 13:08Speaker 6: play him, and that's a lot to put our kids shoulders.
- 13:11Speaker 6: But Tie has handled it really well, and Trey followed
- 13:13Speaker 6: right up with him. So I would loop those two
- 13:15Speaker 6: of them together. Well, I'm trying to think of a third.
- 13:20Speaker 2: Yeah, it gives you. I mean a lot of talents
- 13:22Speaker 2: coming through here.
- 13:23Speaker 4: I got one for you, And I'm not saying best.
- 13:25Speaker 6: I'm just saying ones that I really remembered back when
- 13:29Speaker 6: I worked in Duluth a lifetime ago.
- 13:32Speaker 4: Gopher fans will remember Rick Rickard.
- 13:34Speaker 6: Oh god, he was the first definite, d one, no question,
- 13:41Speaker 6: high school athlete I ever got to cover.
- 13:44Speaker 4: That was early on in my time up in Duluth.
- 13:46Speaker 2: And Chris Mann. Yeah, the Radar.
- 13:51Speaker 6: I did a story with him where he broke out
- 13:53Speaker 6: the box we had all the recruiting letters, sat in
- 13:56Speaker 6: his driveway under the hoop he shot on as a kid.
- 13:58Speaker 4: And talked to him.
- 13:59Speaker 6: So that one I remember because that was my first
- 14:01Speaker 6: real look at watching a kid go from a very
- 14:04Speaker 6: good high school player to the glare of being a
- 14:08Speaker 6: pursued Division one prospect and then moving on to Division
- 14:11Speaker 6: one college.
- 14:12Speaker 4: Those are the three experiences I remember the most.
- 14:15Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly, I mean, a couple of people Chris Humphries.
- 14:21Speaker 2: But again, it just kind of goes to show the
- 14:23Speaker 2: talent over the past twenty thirty years of high school
- 14:26Speaker 2: basketball in this state as well. I mean, and then yeah,
- 14:30Speaker 2: on the lady side as well. I mean, we just
- 14:33Speaker 2: you know, you saw it Monday night with you know,
- 14:35Speaker 2: Minnesota ladies competing for titles.
- 14:37Speaker 4: You know.
- 14:38Speaker 2: So it's just been very incredible to see what the
- 14:41Speaker 2: high school athletes here in Minnesota for all sports have
- 14:46Speaker 2: been able to do lately.
- 14:47Speaker 4: Yeah, and I'd be remiss. We gotta throw pitchebackers in there. Oh,
- 14:51Speaker 4: of course.
- 14:51Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 14:52Speaker 6: We knew very hard she was going to be very special,
- 14:56Speaker 6: and you always wonder how players are going to translate
- 14:58Speaker 6: to the next level she's going to you.
- 15:00Speaker 4: Is she gonna be good enough?
- 15:01Speaker 6: Yeah, she'd be in that conversation too.
- 15:06Speaker 2: Absolutely. All right, folks again, Chris Long joining US Channel
- 15:09Speaker 2: five Sports here in the Twin Cities, Minneapolis, Saint Paul.
- 15:13Speaker 2: All right, so let's go on to these the pro
- 15:16Speaker 2: boys here. We got a couple of teams making playoff
- 15:20Speaker 2: runs in the wild and the Wolves. But before that,
- 15:23Speaker 2: have we heard anything from the Vikings, any GM updates?
- 15:27Speaker 2: And you know, they've done.
- 15:30Speaker 4: A really good job of keeping everything quiet.
- 15:32Speaker 6: They said right away, we're happy going into the draft
- 15:35Speaker 6: with Roberzinsky as the as the acting GM. I don't they've,
- 15:42Speaker 6: Like I said, they've done a good job of we
- 15:44Speaker 6: haven't heard anything.
- 15:44Speaker 4: And even the guys that are I haven't.
- 15:46Speaker 6: The guys that are there, you know, everybody that was
- 15:48Speaker 6: at the owners meetings, all the beat writers, by the way,
- 15:51Speaker 6: fortunate in this town. We've got some great beat writers.
- 15:55Speaker 4: I think.
- 15:56Speaker 6: The only way roberts Inski isn't the GM is if
- 15:58Speaker 6: roberts Inky doesn't want to be.
- 15:59Speaker 4: The Oh okay, it's just I'm pulling out of left field.
- 16:04Speaker 4: It just he's qualified. They're letting him do it now now.
- 16:10Speaker 4: Maybe he doesn't want that.
- 16:12Speaker 6: He's so good, he's unbelievable, one of the best salary
- 16:15Speaker 6: cap people in the entire league. Maybe he knows that's
- 16:18Speaker 6: his lane and he wants to stay in it, and
- 16:19Speaker 6: he's doing pretty well for himself in.
- 16:21Speaker 2: That And Chris, that's why I brought it up, because
- 16:24Speaker 2: you know, they, like you said, they are letting him
- 16:26Speaker 2: run with the ship right now during a very critical
- 16:29Speaker 2: time for this franchise. And that's why I was just like,
- 16:32Speaker 2: you know, I was wondering, Hey, maybe they're just gonna
- 16:35Speaker 2: let him keep the gig, so to speak.
- 16:36Speaker 6: So the other hot name is George Peyton, former assistant
- 16:39Speaker 6: GM here who is now in Denver. But I haven't
- 16:41Speaker 6: heard one word that he's leaning as any desire to
- 16:45Speaker 6: come back, so I think you cross his name off.
- 16:48Speaker 6: Other than that, I honestly have no idea, and they've
- 16:50Speaker 6: been really good about saying we're not gonna do anything
- 16:52Speaker 6: about it until after the.
- 16:53Speaker 2: Draft and real quick thoughts on getting a mister Kyler
- 16:58Speaker 2: Murphy up here. How do you think that plays out?
- 17:01Speaker 2: I mean that we've heard everything from JJ possibly even
- 17:05Speaker 2: now being traded since they did also resign Carson Wentz
- 17:09Speaker 2: obviously a very interesting quarterback room. What are your thoughts
- 17:12Speaker 2: on it?
- 17:13Speaker 6: The biggest negative I've heard is people saying, well, Kyler
- 17:16Speaker 6: Murray's not going to fit Kevin O'Connell's playbook. We've never
- 17:21Speaker 6: seen what Kevin O'Connell's playbook might look like with a
- 17:24Speaker 6: Kyler Murray in there. Kevin o'conn has been pretty good
- 17:29Speaker 6: with a lot of guys who had similar traits.
- 17:31Speaker 4: JJ McCarthy traded out a little of the.
- 17:34Speaker 6: Experience and guile and accuracy for athleticism. But Kyler's got
- 17:39Speaker 6: the arm. He's got the athleticism. So give Kevin O'Connell
- 17:42Speaker 6: a chance to rewrite that playbook and see if he's
- 17:44Speaker 6: done some good things with a lot of quarterbacks that
- 17:46Speaker 6: people didn't think much about.
- 17:49Speaker 4: A lot of people think a lot about Kyler Murray.
- 17:51Speaker 4: He has his detractors, but.
- 17:54Speaker 6: He comes in, certainly on paper with more raw ability
- 18:00Speaker 6: that you're giving Kevin O'Connell to mold. There's more there,
- 18:04Speaker 6: I think with Kyler Murray than there has been with
- 18:07Speaker 6: certainly with with you know what Sam Darnold had shown
- 18:09Speaker 6: and JJ McCarthy, he had flashes. I don't I know,
- 18:15Speaker 6: we don't want to have that debate right now, but
- 18:18Speaker 6: you know, I think Kevin O'Connell put him in position
- 18:20Speaker 6: once he came back from the injury to succeed.
- 18:24Speaker 4: I don't see any reason why Kevin O'Connell won't.
- 18:27Speaker 6: And he knows he's He's not on a hot seat now,
- 18:29Speaker 6: I don't think.
- 18:30Speaker 2: But if things don't work out with Kyler Murray, oh yeah,
- 18:33Speaker 2: for sure, things.
- 18:34Speaker 6: Can get warm in a hurry. And I think he
- 18:35Speaker 6: knows that. So he's gonna do everything he can to
- 18:37Speaker 6: unlock whatever he can.
- 18:38Speaker 4: With Kyler Murray.
- 18:39Speaker 2: Absolutely. All right, we're keeping it moving here. Chris along,
- 18:42Speaker 2: I'm joining us on the Sports Done Right podcast. All right, Chris, so,
- 18:46Speaker 2: let me ask you this, Minnesota, while you know, great season,
- 18:53Speaker 2: you know, I think you know, top three, four points obviously,
- 18:56Speaker 2: you know in the conference, all that stuff. I mean,
- 19:00Speaker 2: this has got to be the year, right that the
- 19:01Speaker 2: Wild finally go deep into the playoffs, make that return again.
- 19:05Speaker 2: I mean right, no.
- 19:09Speaker 4: Wild team has had more than one star. Maybe some
- 19:13Speaker 4: of them didn't. Yeah, now they have three.
- 19:17Speaker 6: Corona Caprizov has done everything that could be asked of him.
- 19:20Speaker 6: Quenus has been completely as advertised his impact on an offense.
- 19:27Speaker 4: There's nobody close.
- 19:28Speaker 6: I mean, there might be better offensive defenseman, but his
- 19:31Speaker 6: impact on the offense, no one's immediate.
- 19:33Speaker 2: As soon as he got here, you know, he was like,
- 19:36Speaker 2: you know, hand and glove. He just fit right in.
- 19:38Speaker 2: And then the team took right to him.
- 19:40Speaker 6: And then what Matt Bowley has done taking the next
- 19:43Speaker 6: step and he's now forty goal scorer.
- 19:45Speaker 4: You've got three stars. That's pretty good.
- 19:47Speaker 6: And the thing you have to have in the NHL
- 19:50Speaker 6: playoffs is a goalie, and they may have two of them.
- 19:53Speaker 4: Yeah, they've been consistent. Last they checked. I don't know
- 19:55Speaker 4: what the update would be today, but it was like
- 19:57Speaker 4: two days ago.
- 19:59Speaker 6: Desper Falseta and Philip Gustison as a unit, we're tied
- 20:03Speaker 6: with Colorado's goal is.
- 20:04Speaker 4: For the best save percentage in the National Hockey League.
- 20:06Speaker 6: So you've got the goaltending, you've got the three stars,
- 20:10Speaker 6: you've got a pretty darn good defense. You have a
- 20:13Speaker 6: physical team. I mean, Danila, you're off and both the
- 20:17Speaker 6: Felinos and Ryan Hartman, I mean they're checking every box
- 20:23Speaker 6: that you want to see in the team to have
- 20:24Speaker 6: success and the playoffs.
- 20:25Speaker 4: The problem is they're in the same.
- 20:27Speaker 6: Division as Colorado and Dallas, three of the four best
- 20:30Speaker 6: teams in the NHL. They're gonna play Dallas in the
- 20:33Speaker 6: first round. It's gonna be a brutal series, and one
- 20:35Speaker 6: of the best four teams in the.
- 20:36Speaker 4: National Hockey League is going to be out.
- 20:38Speaker 6: The winner will most likely goal face Colorado and then
- 20:41Speaker 6: you're gonna have two of the best teams knocked out.
- 20:44Speaker 6: But it stinks because, yeah, the Wilder as set up
- 20:47Speaker 6: for playoffs success this year as they've ever been in
- 20:51Speaker 6: the entire timely existence.
- 20:53Speaker 2: Yeah, and you know, I mean from the front office
- 20:55Speaker 2: down to you know, as a very now disgruntled Chicago
- 20:58Speaker 2: Blackhawks fan here, they're rebuilding for the past, what twelve
- 21:05Speaker 2: years now or something like that.
- 21:07Speaker 4: But yeah, but it worked last time. They had to
- 21:08Speaker 4: do this so well.
- 21:10Speaker 2: I wish they'd hurry up so we can kind of
- 21:11Speaker 2: get back to the playoffs. But you know, front office
- 21:15Speaker 2: Minnesota while just love what they've been doing this year,
- 21:18Speaker 2: and that's why everything seems to be in place. They
- 21:23Speaker 2: just got to go out and do it, and you know,
- 21:25Speaker 2: to like you said, now, to have to go against
- 21:28Speaker 2: Dallas right away and all that stuff that's taught for
- 21:30Speaker 2: another time on how the NHL does this stuff. But
- 21:34Speaker 2: if they can get past Dallas, man, hold on, it's
- 21:36Speaker 2: gonna be a fun ride.
- 21:37Speaker 4: Well, it's gonna be great.
- 21:39Speaker 6: I mean if they if they get through Dallas and Colorado,
- 21:41Speaker 6: they'll emerge as the favorites to win the Stanley Cup.
- 21:44Speaker 2: Now that's a huge Jeff, Yeah, yeah. But if it
- 21:49Speaker 2: does happen, absolutely nobody from the other division and our
- 21:55Speaker 2: conference scares me. And you know, a couple of teams
- 21:57Speaker 2: in the East, you know, I get it. But man,
- 22:00Speaker 2: I've just been very impressed by the Minnesota whild this season,
- 22:04Speaker 2: and a lot of people, you know, come at me
- 22:06Speaker 2: because obviously they know I'm I'm wild are my second
- 22:09Speaker 2: favorite team. I'm a Blackhawks, guys. Oh, I was born
- 22:12Speaker 2: in Chicago, but.
- 22:14Speaker 4: I grew up I grew up a Capital fan.
- 22:16Speaker 2: I'm from DC, so I'm with you, I'm with you,
- 22:19Speaker 2: and and well I was a huge and North Star fan.
- 22:21Speaker 2: But obviously they took off and I just went back
- 22:23Speaker 2: to my at the time second favorite team. I'm from Chicago,
- 22:27Speaker 2: and you know, it took a few years for a
- 22:29Speaker 2: team to come back here and I was already in trench.
- 22:31Speaker 2: So I'm like, Okay, I'm just staying where I'm at.
- 22:33Speaker 2: But yeah, very impressed with the Wild, very impressed with
- 22:36Speaker 2: the front office and ownership. And you know, I mean,
- 22:39Speaker 2: obviously with my team out of it, I'm pulling for
- 22:42Speaker 2: him and I hope they can make that move this
- 22:44Speaker 2: year at least get that very deep playoff run. If not,
- 22:48Speaker 2: obviously Stanley Cup appearance.
- 22:49Speaker 4: Well and two things. One, the thing I'd like the
- 22:52Speaker 4: most about watching a while this year, They're just fun
- 22:54Speaker 4: to watch. You just you put your phone down and
- 22:57Speaker 4: you just you watch.
- 22:58Speaker 6: The game because the style they play are so appealing
- 23:00Speaker 6: and Quinn Hughes is so fun. We has a puck
- 23:01Speaker 6: on a stick and everybody can score. I mean, the
- 23:05Speaker 6: special teams have been good. They're just fun to sit
- 23:07Speaker 6: down and watch. The other thing is they're gonna have
- 23:10Speaker 6: room to do something this off season by not making
- 23:13Speaker 6: another big move at the trade deadline, there's gonna be
- 23:15Speaker 6: some salary cap room and they've got.
- 23:18Speaker 4: A lot of assets.
- 23:19Speaker 6: A kid they just signed, a kid from Rosemunt Charlie
- 23:21Speaker 6: Straman was really probably their really big trade chip. But
- 23:23Speaker 6: I think that there is room for a pretty big
- 23:27Speaker 6: move this off season for Bill Garon to make so
- 23:29Speaker 6: it's too positives for the while, even beyond what's gonna happen, right, Yeah,
- 23:33Speaker 6: and that'd be awesome because you know, with the pieces
- 23:36Speaker 6: in place now some more, Yeah, you could be setting.
- 23:39Speaker 2: Yourself up for a nice little stretch here of some
- 23:42Speaker 2: really really good hockey. Okay, so we're praying for you
- 23:48Speaker 2: while do the thing. Now. The Timberwolves, you know, you
- 23:52Speaker 2: got ant Man, some you know injured, got a couple
- 23:55Speaker 2: other folks dinged up. Everything obviously is so close in
- 23:59Speaker 2: the West Conference. You know, you win a couple of games,
- 24:02Speaker 2: you lose a couple of games, and you can go
- 24:03Speaker 2: up three or four spots, are down three or four spots.
- 24:06Speaker 2: It teams and outside of OKC San Antonio who have
- 24:10Speaker 2: definitely set themselves apart, it's gonna be very interesting. Lakers
- 24:15Speaker 2: obviously were playing very well. Now they got a couple
- 24:17Speaker 2: guys injured.
- 24:19Speaker 4: What you Houston might be the hottest team in the
- 24:21Speaker 4: West right now.
- 24:22Speaker 2: Yeah, in Houston too, And I mean, yeah, that's the thing.
- 24:25Speaker 2: There's just you know, teams we're not even thinking about.
- 24:28Speaker 2: But for Minnesota, Chris, what do you what do you
- 24:30Speaker 2: see right now? You know, because a lot of people
- 24:33Speaker 2: have been talking to me about, you know, Chris Finch
- 24:36Speaker 2: being fired. Is you know, I can definitely see that
- 24:38Speaker 2: happening with a very early playoff exit from the Wolves.
- 24:42Speaker 2: But you know, you know, you're you're in contact with folks.
- 24:46Speaker 2: What's kind of the word on the street about the
- 24:48Speaker 2: Timberwolves and just the vibe around that franchise right now.
- 24:53Speaker 6: I the weirdest part of the whole season for them
- 24:57Speaker 6: has been this Chris Finch just frustrated, but he keeps
- 25:01Speaker 6: saying things like that their moody, they get in these ruts,
- 25:05Speaker 6: and you know, he went right after Julius Randall a
- 25:08Speaker 6: couple of times. It's hard to not and I'm not
- 25:14Speaker 6: a fire Chris Finch guy. I think even if they
- 25:16Speaker 6: lose in the first round, I think Chris Finch, with what.
- 25:19Speaker 4: He did the last two seasons, has earned at least
- 25:21Speaker 4: one more.
- 25:22Speaker 6: I don't think it's on him, and I don't know
- 25:25Speaker 6: what's going on with with There are some nights I
- 25:27Speaker 6: talk about the Wild being fun to watchers. Some nights
- 25:29Speaker 6: you watch Timberwolves and you just know right away, like
- 25:31Speaker 6: this this is They're not They're.
- 25:33Speaker 2: Not locked in tonight right exactly.
- 25:35Speaker 6: But on other nights they look like world beaters, and
- 25:39Speaker 6: some of that has to do with you know, you
- 25:42Speaker 6: don't want to put it all on Anthony Edwards, but
- 25:44Speaker 6: he can put a game.
- 25:46Speaker 4: Remember the game, who's the game?
- 25:47Speaker 6: Karl Anthony Town scored fifty fifty four points and they lost.
- 25:52Speaker 4: Yeah, it's had the wrong tone.
- 25:54Speaker 6: In the postgame, ant doesn't do that. You'll see Aunt
- 26:00Speaker 6: score sixty and if they.
- 26:01Speaker 4: Lose, he's going to be upset.
- 26:02Speaker 6: So he's shown he can put the team on his
- 26:04Speaker 6: back and wants to put team is back. But I
- 26:06Speaker 6: don't understand who's responsible if the team is moody and
- 26:10Speaker 6: can't get locked in and isn't connected and sometimes lose
- 26:13Speaker 6: his focus?
- 26:13Speaker 4: Is that the coach? Is that? The leader? Is that
- 26:16Speaker 4: the veterans?
- 26:17Speaker 2: Right?
- 26:18Speaker 4: I thought that's part of the reason they.
- 26:19Speaker 2: Brought my Cony back.
- 26:22Speaker 4: Maybe they're not listening to him. I don't know. There's
- 26:27Speaker 4: just so many weird, little moving parts.
- 26:29Speaker 6: I mean, everybody kills ru Gobert for his offensive deficiencies,
- 26:32Speaker 6: but that's.
- 26:33Speaker 4: Not his role.
- 26:34Speaker 6: Like he's he's one of the best defensive players this generation.
- 26:38Speaker 6: It all should work better than it has this year,
- 26:41Speaker 6: And I don't exactly know why it hasn't. And some
- 26:44Speaker 6: people might hear that statement and say, well, then you
- 26:46Speaker 6: blame the coach maybe, but I if it were me,
- 26:50Speaker 6: I don't know that I pull the trigger.
- 26:51Speaker 4: On Chris Finch. Tell me who you get anytime.
- 26:56Speaker 6: Anytime you're talking about fireing somebody here, tell me who
- 26:59Speaker 6: you're gonna get, is it? I don't lay at all
- 27:02Speaker 6: at Chris Pinch's feet, But it's just strange that this pervasive, moody,
- 27:08Speaker 6: disjointed feel are around the team, but then every own
- 27:12Speaker 6: and then you watch them and they they look great.
- 27:16Speaker 4: It's hard to balance those two things together.
- 27:19Speaker 2: I hear you. I hear you. I think that was
- 27:21Speaker 2: a great take, and that's exactly what I hear from
- 27:24Speaker 2: a lot of people. It's just been a very just
- 27:26Speaker 2: kind of weird at time season for that squad. And
- 27:29Speaker 2: like you said, you know who's kind of running the ship?
- 27:33Speaker 2: Is it the coach? Is it the veterans? Is it ant?
- 27:36Speaker 2: I mean, yeah, it's And I think people are getting
- 27:39Speaker 2: a little leary too, you know, because I hear people
- 27:43Speaker 2: talking more about that early first round exit, you know,
- 27:47Speaker 2: especially like you said, with teams, you know, Houston heating
- 27:49Speaker 2: up Lakers heating up, and obviously other teams in the
- 27:53Speaker 2: West because we're all bunched right there together, so it's
- 27:55Speaker 2: not like one team is truly better than Yeah, and
- 27:58Speaker 2: the big.
- 27:58Speaker 6: Wild card is going to be injuries. I haven't seen
- 28:02Speaker 6: an update on one beyond I don't know how hurt
- 28:03Speaker 6: he is. I saw he got hurt the other night.
- 28:05Speaker 6: He's have to see h date. The Lakers are missing too. Two,
- 28:12Speaker 6: they're missing Luca and Austin Reeves the Wolves and good
- 28:17Speaker 6: as E. J. McDaniel's back, and I'm hoping that him
- 28:21Speaker 6: missing this many games.
- 28:22Speaker 4: Down stretch has been more precautionary than anything.
- 28:25Speaker 6: Yeah, but if any of those guys, it changes the
- 28:30Speaker 6: complexion of a series.
- 28:31Speaker 4: If any of those guys are out, and.
- 28:35Speaker 6: You know you hainte seeing that you want full strength
- 28:37Speaker 6: on full strength, but you know you talk about playing,
- 28:41Speaker 6: you know, the matchup could be completely different depending who
- 28:47Speaker 6: is available for each team. It feels like the Rockets
- 28:49Speaker 6: and the Thunder are the only team that has stayed
- 28:51Speaker 6: completely healthy.
- 28:52Speaker 2: Well said, Well said. Do you see a playoff run
- 28:57Speaker 2: for the Wolves?
- 28:59Speaker 5: I don't.
- 29:00Speaker 6: If somehow they can get the Lakers in round one,
- 29:04Speaker 6: I don't like the matchup with Denver now.
- 29:08Speaker 2: Good point.
- 29:10Speaker 4: I don't know what the standings.
- 29:11Speaker 6: Are right now, but if it's the Lakers, yes, if not,
- 29:16Speaker 6: they'll be underdogs.
- 29:17Speaker 4: I'll say it that way.
- 29:18Speaker 6: I don't think this team is as they clearly don't
- 29:22Speaker 6: have the momentum they had, you know, either the last
- 29:24Speaker 6: two years going into the postseason.
- 29:26Speaker 4: It doesn't feel like they're as loaded and ready. However,
- 29:29Speaker 4: they are.
- 29:30Speaker 6: Going to get a lot of time where they're gonna
- 29:32Speaker 6: be able to rest a lot of players and they're
- 29:34Speaker 6: not gonna be in the play in so they're gonna
- 29:35Speaker 6: have time to practice and and specifically.
- 29:39Speaker 4: Plan for one opponent.
- 29:43Speaker 6: Maybe that helps, Maybe that helps them flip the switch
- 29:46Speaker 6: that I think a lot of people, maybe themselves included,
- 29:48Speaker 6: thought they'd be able to flip at some point.
- 29:50Speaker 2: Good point. And I'm looking over here on the iPad
- 29:53Speaker 2: monitor forty seven to thirty two. The Wolves are the
- 29:55Speaker 2: sixth seed right now, three games behind Houston. Like you said,
- 29:59Speaker 2: Houston def heat it up, three games behind the Lakers,
- 30:03Speaker 2: and they are four games ahead of Phoenix, who was
- 30:06Speaker 2: in the seventh spot. There we know those.
- 30:09Speaker 6: Are the sixth The question is how far does Houston
- 30:12Speaker 6: climb and how far do the Lakers right exactly?
- 30:16Speaker 2: All right, Well, here just got a few more minutes
- 30:18Speaker 2: with Chris Long everybody, so let's have some fun with
- 30:20Speaker 2: this guy here, Chris. This is interesting because as I've
- 30:24Speaker 2: been able to kind of get some access with the
- 30:27Speaker 2: press passes and you know, get to see everybody in
- 30:30Speaker 2: the in the press rooms and stuff. Obviously, you all
- 30:34Speaker 2: work for different stations and everything, and there's a little
- 30:37Speaker 2: bit of competition, you know, you do gotta get ratings
- 30:39Speaker 2: all that stuff. But it did kind of amaze me how,
- 30:43Speaker 2: you know, in these press conferences and stuff, all the
- 30:46Speaker 2: sportscasters are really friendly with each other. I mean, it's
- 30:49Speaker 2: it's literally like you're in a room full of everybody's
- 30:52Speaker 2: best friends. Can you kind of just allude on that.
- 30:55Speaker 2: I mean, we just had Julia Daniels on a couple
- 30:57Speaker 2: of weeks ago. I had to Gion last year, and
- 31:01Speaker 2: the other sports writers, Norman C. Wright when he was
- 31:04Speaker 2: here at CECO and others, And that was just the
- 31:06Speaker 2: one thing that I thought was just really cool because
- 31:09Speaker 2: from the outside, you know, we hear ratings and this
- 31:12Speaker 2: channel versus that channel, and then you get behind the scenes,
- 31:15Speaker 2: and like I said, it's like everybody's hanging out at
- 31:17Speaker 2: cheers or something.
- 31:19Speaker 4: It is competitive.
- 31:21Speaker 6: It is friendly competition. You want to beat them to
- 31:24Speaker 6: the story. You want to do a better job on
- 31:25Speaker 6: the story. You want to find angles that they don't find.
- 31:27Speaker 6: But that's you.
- 31:29Speaker 4: You don't need to. There are some markets that I've heard.
- 31:32Speaker 6: I'm only worked in three I've been in Duluth, Fort,
- 31:34Speaker 6: Myerson here, but I've heard there are some other.
- 31:35Speaker 4: Markets that that's not the way it is. Everybody's cutthroat
- 31:38Speaker 4: and hates each other.
- 31:39Speaker 2: And oh I can imagine.
- 31:40Speaker 6: You know, a camera cord might get unplugged every now
- 31:43Speaker 6: and then and nobody knows exactly who did it.
- 31:45Speaker 4: I've heard stories.
- 31:46Speaker 6: I'm glad we're not in that because the line I
- 31:48Speaker 6: always use is, any given week, I'm going to see
- 31:52Speaker 6: those people more than I'm going to see my own family.
- 31:55Speaker 6: We choose to get into this line of work. You
- 31:58Speaker 6: can get into a bunker a Vikings season. I mean,
- 32:00Speaker 6: I know I'm gonna be down at at TCO Center.
- 32:04Speaker 6: You know, three times we're going to be at us
- 32:06Speaker 6: Bank Stadium Sundays. I'm going to see the same people.
- 32:09Speaker 6: And if I'm acting in a way, whether it's in
- 32:12Speaker 6: a scrum or away from it when we're just kind
- 32:15Speaker 6: of sitting and sit and wait mode.
- 32:17Speaker 4: You want to make your own life harder if you're
- 32:19Speaker 4: if you're a jerk about things.
- 32:21Speaker 6: And the good thing about the Minnesota media is everybody
- 32:24Speaker 6: does buy and large get along. There's some robberies that
- 32:26Speaker 6: will pop up, oh of course, and then it's fun
- 32:28Speaker 6: to see that happen. But it's the line I always used.
- 32:32Speaker 6: You just said, we all better get along because we're
- 32:34Speaker 6: all going to be shoulder to shoulder trying to interview
- 32:37Speaker 6: the same people a lot of the time. And again,
- 32:39Speaker 6: we may in a given week spend more time with
- 32:42Speaker 6: each other than we will with our own family.
- 32:43Speaker 4: So let's do our best to get along.
- 32:45Speaker 6: And you know, I hate it when I see somebody
- 32:48Speaker 6: beats us to a story or.
- 32:50Speaker 4: Or does a better job with something. I hate it.
- 32:53Speaker 6: But but there's respect, like, all right, you got this one.
- 32:57Speaker 6: You know we'll get the next one. And it helps
- 33:00Speaker 6: that there's a lot of really good people. I mean,
- 33:02Speaker 6: the press corps here is a lot of people that
- 33:05Speaker 6: are just very professional, very talented, respectful of one another.
- 33:12Speaker 4: We all want to be the best.
- 33:13Speaker 2: Don't just read that, Oh yeah, absolutely.
- 33:16Speaker 6: You know, but it does work in a way that
- 33:19Speaker 6: I don't know that it works in a lot of
- 33:22Speaker 6: certainly not all markets. I'm sure plenty are like this,
- 33:24Speaker 6: but not all.
- 33:27Speaker 2: All right, So let's end it with this here again, folks.
- 33:29Speaker 2: Chris Long is joined us here on the Sports un
- 33:31Speaker 2: Right podcast. Who's Chris Long? Where are you from? How'd
- 33:37Speaker 2: you get into the sports?
- 33:38Speaker 4: All right?
- 33:39Speaker 2: Chris?
- 33:40Speaker 4: I like that. I'll try to keep it quick.
- 33:42Speaker 6: I'm irish, and as you've noticed over the last thirty minutes,
- 33:45Speaker 6: you get me going, I'll go.
- 33:47Speaker 4: Grew up beside of Washington, d C. My dad worked
- 33:52Speaker 4: at a TV station.
- 33:53Speaker 6: He was on the sales side, and I would always
- 33:56Speaker 6: just go, you know, we'd be going to like a
- 33:57Speaker 6: Washington Capitol's game. He'd gets some tickets and I take
- 33:59Speaker 6: the sub way down to his from the suburbs into
- 34:02Speaker 6: his station. We'd go from there, and I always just
- 34:05Speaker 6: wanted to hang around in the newsroom.
- 34:06Speaker 4: I just I love the energy and the buzz and
- 34:08Speaker 4: the feel. And I got to know some.
- 34:11Speaker 6: Of the people that worked in his newsroom and just
- 34:14Speaker 6: kind of went, Okay, this is you know, like sixth grade.
- 34:17Speaker 6: I'm like, this is where I want to go. All
- 34:19Speaker 6: I wanted to do news, got into college, realized I
- 34:21Speaker 6: did not want.
- 34:22Speaker 4: To do news.
- 34:23Speaker 2: Where'd you go to school?
- 34:24Speaker 4: University of Missouri. Fromc went to the University of Missouri.
- 34:30Speaker 4: And it was funny my dad when I decided, all right,
- 34:34Speaker 4: I'm going to Missouri.
- 34:35Speaker 6: I'm going to go to their journalism school is well
- 34:37Speaker 6: regarded journalism school. He said when we when we were
- 34:41Speaker 6: making the decision where I was going to go to college,
- 34:42Speaker 6: he said, that's fine, he goes, just promise me you're
- 34:44Speaker 6: not going to try to go into sports. All he said,
- 34:50Speaker 6: you go to college is promise me you're not going
- 34:52Speaker 6: to try to get into He knew I liked sports.
- 34:54Speaker 6: I played every sport coming up as a kid. Wasn't
- 34:58Speaker 6: that good in any of them, but so decided I
- 35:02Speaker 6: didn't want any news. I'm like, all right, well, I'll
- 35:03Speaker 6: give sports a try, and if I can't get into it,
- 35:06Speaker 6: then I'll.
- 35:06Speaker 4: Figure something else out.
- 35:07Speaker 6: I did an internship at an ad agency one summer
- 35:09Speaker 6: to kind of cover my bases. Got my first job
- 35:13Speaker 6: in Duluth out of college. Moved up there as a
- 35:17Speaker 6: temporary fill in, ended up staying there eight years.
- 35:21Speaker 4: Loved it up there.
- 35:23Speaker 6: If it had been financially tenable, I might still be there.
- 35:26Speaker 6: I absolutely loved my time in Duluth.
- 35:28Speaker 4: Went from Duluth to Fort Myers, Florida, climbed the ranks
- 35:31Speaker 4: at a station there, but just kind of new through
- 35:36Speaker 4: my eight years in Duluth. I loved coming to the
- 35:37Speaker 4: Twin Cities. I loved sports matter here. Like you know,
- 35:43Speaker 4: this is a good sports town.
- 35:45Speaker 6: Despite what people might want to say about championship results,
- 35:49Speaker 6: this is a good sports town.
- 35:51Speaker 4: I always wanted to get back here.
- 35:52Speaker 6: But saying that you want to come back and get
- 35:54Speaker 6: a job here is like saying, well, I want to
- 35:55Speaker 6: play for the New York Yankees.
- 35:57Speaker 4: It just you kind of take whatever you can get.
- 35:59Speaker 4: If I ended up in Seattle or.
- 36:02Speaker 6: Boston or you know, any other major market city, it
- 36:06Speaker 6: would have been fine. But I always always wanted to
- 36:09Speaker 6: get back to Minnesota. And really the first job I
- 36:12Speaker 6: went for in Fort Myers when it was time to
- 36:14Speaker 6: go from there was at KSTP. There was some movement here,
- 36:17Speaker 6: and I knew some people here and kind of networked
- 36:19Speaker 6: my way into getting an interview and fooled them and
- 36:23Speaker 6: working to luth. I went up as attempting to luth
- 36:25Speaker 6: in state eight years. Oh wow, came up here and
- 36:28Speaker 6: took a shot, and I've been here now seventeen so.
- 36:31Speaker 2: Man, yeah, it doesn't seem like it. It's but as
- 36:36Speaker 2: they say, time just flies by. Seventeen years.
- 36:39Speaker 6: Yeah, I've spent now half my life in Minnesota eight
- 36:41Speaker 6: and d luth and then seventeen here.
