- 0:00Speaker 1: Pray thee, sit and eat of my venison, that thy
- 0:03Speaker 1: soul may bless me. Genesis 27.19 Dear Heavenly Father, today
- 0:10Speaker 1: I am choosing to break generational cycles that no longer
- 0:14Speaker 1: serve my purpose or my destiny. I do not use
- 0:19Speaker 1: deception to try to protect myself at the risk of
- 0:22Speaker 1: my loved ones, like Isaac and like his father before him, Abraham.
- 0:28Speaker 1: I declare that integrity and uprightness of heart will be
- 0:33Speaker 1: my guiding compass. I decree and declare that as I
- 0:37Speaker 1: move with integrity, you will multiply my life and shower
- 0:42Speaker 1: me with your blessing. I confess that I don't have
- 0:47Speaker 1: to use manipulation and trickery as Jacob did to get
- 0:51Speaker 1: what you have for me. Rather, I will stay in
- 0:55Speaker 1: my lane and keep my eyes toward you and your word,
- 1:00Speaker 1: because what you have for me is mine, and no
- 1:03Speaker 1: one can take what's mine out of your hand, Lord.
- 1:08Speaker 1: In my life, when others seek to hinder my blessings,
- 1:11Speaker 1: I don't have to panic or worry, because you will
- 1:14Speaker 1: continually protect and cover all that I have. Thank you, Jesus,
- 1:21Speaker 1: that because you bless me, I am blessed indeed. In Jesus' name, Amen.
- 1:32Speaker 1: Thank you for praying with me today. Continue listening for

- 1:46Speaker 2: Jacob and Esau. Before this story, we learn of Abraham's death.
- 1:53Speaker 2: The father of nations went to be with his Lord.
- 1:57Speaker 2: He was buried by Isaac and Ishmael beside his wife Sarah.
- 2:01Speaker 2: Isaac and Rebekah had twins named Jacob and Esau. The two,
- 2:06Speaker 2: even from the womb, warred against one another. Esau, the
- 2:11Speaker 2: older twin, was tricked by his younger brother and sold
- 2:14Speaker 2: his birthright. Now, we will learn about Rebekah and Jacob
- 2:19Speaker 2: tricking Isaac into giving Jacob his blessing, inspired by the
- 2:23Speaker 2: book of Genesis.
- 2:26Speaker 3: Hello, I'm Jack Graham with today's episode of the Bible
- 2:30Speaker 3: in a Year podcast. Today we begin with a famine
- 2:33Speaker 3: that takes Isaac and his family to another land, and here,
- 2:37Speaker 3: just as his father did, Isaac tells a lie about
- 2:39Speaker 3: his wife to protect himself. Fear has once again ruled
- 2:44Speaker 3: in the heart of one of God's chosen people. History
- 2:47Speaker 3: is repeating itself in a new generation. You'll once again
- 2:52Speaker 3: hear how despite a lack of faithfulness on their part,
- 2:55Speaker 3: God continues to bless and protect Abraham's family, now through
- 3:00Speaker 3: his son, Isaac. Listen to how Isaac prospered in this
- 3:04Speaker 3: new land and how he was met with disdain and
- 3:07Speaker 3: distrust by others who resented him for the blessings he
- 3:10Speaker 3: was reaping, blessings God was giving him. You will also
- 3:14Speaker 3: hear how Isaac followed the model of his own father,
- 3:17Speaker 3: created remembrances of God's faithfulness and monuments to the God
- 3:22Speaker 3: who provides. And in this passage, we'll return to Jacob
- 3:26Speaker 3: and Esau and the conflict that began to brew in
- 3:29Speaker 3: yesterday's story. You'll hear of hidden intentions, heartbreak, and hatred.
- 3:34Speaker 3: Watch how Jacob's craftiness and cleverness and deception finally strike
- 3:39Speaker 3: a blow to both Esau and Isaac that will forever
- 3:43Speaker 3: alter the course of this family and history. In today's passage,
- 3:48Speaker 3: he is not acting alone, but is teaming with Rebekah,
- 3:51Speaker 3: his mother, who favors him over Esau. Together, they will
- 3:56Speaker 3: trick Isaac into giving Jacob what is meant for his
- 3:58Speaker 3: older brother. The family conflict will come into an explosive
- 4:02Speaker 3: climax and you'll hear echoes of two brothers we've heard
- 4:05Speaker 3: of long ago. One accepted and the other rejected. Will
- 4:10Speaker 3: all be lost? Is there any way for this family
- 4:13Speaker 3: to heal? These are the questions you'll be left with
- 4:16Speaker 3: as you listen to today's passage. So, let's hear the
- 4:19Speaker 3: story now.
- 4:22Speaker 2: There was a great famine that plagued the land. The land,
- 4:26Speaker 2: once adorned with fertile fields, ceased its growth. The land
- 4:30Speaker 2: would soon return to its former glory, yet for the
- 4:33Speaker 2: time being, Isaac needed to escape to healthier plains. They
- 4:38Speaker 2: escaped to Girar, a hostile land in which Isaac had
- 4:42Speaker 2: never ventured before. When his family settled there, the men
- 4:46Speaker 2: in the city were asking about his wife Rebecca, for
- 4:49Speaker 2: she was pleasing to the eye. Isaac, out of fear
- 4:53Speaker 2: that they might kill him to take his wife, claimed
- 4:56Speaker 2: she was his sister, as his father Abraham had done
- 4:59Speaker 2: before him. And Adam did generations before him. Isaac compromised
- 5:05Speaker 2: the integrity of his wife to protect himself. Yet it
- 5:09Speaker 2: did not take long for Isaac to get found out,
- 5:12Speaker 2: and a great distress was put upon their leader, Abimelech.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Once again, the family of Abraham had underestimated the integrity
- 5:20Speaker 2: of foreigners and and it created strife amongst them. And
- 5:24Speaker 2: yet Isaac worked the ground well. The Lord had instructed
- 5:29Speaker 2: Isaac to remain in Gerar instead of fleeing to Egypt,
- 5:32Speaker 2: and he was fruitful for it. Isaac grew richer during
- 5:36Speaker 2: the famine, and his influence reached far beyond the land
- 5:40Speaker 2: of Gerar. The Philistines who dwelled in the land grew
- 5:44Speaker 2: envious of him, and Isaac became villainized for his success.
- 5:49Speaker 2: Abimelech sent him away, for they did not want him
- 5:52Speaker 2: growing even more rich off of their land. Isaac and
- 5:56Speaker 2: his family wandered for many weeks, and they were met
- 5:59Speaker 2: everywhere they went with disdain and conflict. Yet God remained
- 6:04Speaker 2: faithful and reminded Isaac of his promise to him. God
- 6:08Speaker 2: blessed him, saying, I am the God of Abraham your father.
- 6:12Speaker 2: Fear not, for I am with you and will bless
- 6:16Speaker 2: you and multiply your offspring for my servant Abraham's sake.
- 6:20Speaker 2: and Isaac dug wells as a monument to God's faithfulness.
- 6:24Speaker 2: During this time, Esau had married a Hittite woman named Judith.
- 6:29Speaker 2: The two of them made Rebekah and Jacob's life miserable
- 6:33Speaker 2: and openly mocked them both. Isaac grew old, and his
- 6:38Speaker 2: eyes began to fade. He could no longer open his
- 6:42Speaker 2: eyes to see the fruit of his labor or the
- 6:44Speaker 2: ones he loved. Isaac, knowing that his time was drawing near,
- 6:48Speaker 2: called to his oldest son Esau. My son, he said.
- 6:54Speaker 2: Here I am, Esau replied. Go into the countryside with
- 6:58Speaker 2: your bow and hunt me an animal. Prepare me a
- 7:02Speaker 2: meal and you and I will sit together to eat. Afterwards,
- 7:07Speaker 2: I will bless you before I depart. Esau left immediately
- 7:12Speaker 2: to hunt for his father, anticipating the blessing that would
- 7:15Speaker 2: come afterwards. Rebecca overheard Isaac and Esau and immediately grabbed
- 7:21Speaker 2: her son Jacob. Rebecca told Jacob what Isaac was planning
- 7:25Speaker 2: on doing and together they devised a plan to steal
- 7:29Speaker 2: away Esau's blessing. Jacob killed a goat and made his
- 7:33Speaker 2: father a delicious stew. Rebecca then dressed Jacob in Esau's clothes.
- 7:39Speaker 2: Since Esau was a hairy man, Jacob covered himself in
- 7:43Speaker 2: goat fur. With Esau's clothes, fur, and stew Jacob entered
- 7:48Speaker 2: into his father's tent, determined to come out with a blessing.
- 7:53Speaker 2: Slowly entering into the tent, Jacob lowered his voice and spoke,
- 7:58Speaker 2: Here I am, Father. Isaac, blind, looked towards Jacob and said,
- 8:05Speaker 2: Who is here? It is Esau, your firstborn. I have
- 8:09Speaker 2: done what you asked. Please, get up and eat so
- 8:13Speaker 2: that you may bless me. Isaac, perplexed, inquired how Esau
- 8:19Speaker 2: was able to kill the animal so quickly. The Lord
- 8:22Speaker 2: guided my hand and gave me success. Jacob lied. Come
- 8:27Speaker 2: here so I can touch you, son. I must know
- 8:30Speaker 2: if you are truly Esau. Jacob drew near to Isaac
- 8:34Speaker 2: and allowed him to feel his arms and clothes. The
- 8:38Speaker 2: trick had worked. Isaac was convinced he was speaking to Esau.
- 8:44Speaker 2: The two ate together. And Isaac placed his hands on Jacob.
- 8:48Speaker 2: With love and excitement, Isaac spoke over Jacob with the
- 8:51Speaker 2: same adoration he would have given Esau. The tender and
- 8:56Speaker 2: intimate moment between father and firstborn son was stolen by Jacob.
- 9:02Speaker 2: Isaac spoke his blessing over Jacob, reciting a type of
- 9:06Speaker 2: ancient poetry, one that would echo throughout all of Jacob's life.
- 9:11Speaker 2: See the smell of my son. is as the smell
- 9:14Speaker 2: of a field that the God has blessed. May God
- 9:17Speaker 2: give you of the dew of heaven, the sustenance of
- 9:20Speaker 2: the earth and plenty of grain and wine. Let all
- 9:24Speaker 2: people serve you and nations bow down to you. Be
- 9:28Speaker 2: king over your brothers and may they bow down to you.
- 9:32Speaker 2: Cursed be everyone who curses you and blessed be everyone
- 9:37Speaker 2: who blesses you. As Isaac was finishing his blessing over Jacob,
- 9:42Speaker 2: Esau returned from his hunt. Esau tirelessly worked as he
- 9:47Speaker 2: skinned the deer, butchered it, and prepared his father's favorite meal.
- 9:52Speaker 2: Blessing was in reach and he hurried to his father's
- 9:55Speaker 2: tent with a meal. Jacob had left Isaac's side and
- 9:58Speaker 2: Esau approached him. Father, I have come back from my hunt. Here,
- 10:04Speaker 2: take and eat, so that you may bless me.
- 10:07Speaker 1: Who are you?
- 10:08Speaker 2: He answered crossly. I am your firstborn son, Esau. I
- 10:13Speaker 2: have come back from my hunt. Isaac trembled and became violent.
- 10:18Speaker 2: In a rage, Isaac raised his voice, saying, Who was
- 10:21Speaker 2: it then that brought me food? I have blessed him,
- 10:24Speaker 2: and he will be blessed. As soon as Esau heard this,
- 10:29Speaker 2: he bellowed a deep and bitter cry. Sorrow, rage, and
- 10:34Speaker 2: anguish welled up in Esau's heart. His brother had tricked
- 10:37Speaker 2: him into giving up his birthright, and now he had
- 10:40Speaker 2: stolen what mattered most, his father's blessing. Frantically, And with
- 10:46Speaker 2: tears filling his eyes, Esau begged his father, Bless me also,
- 10:52Speaker 2: my father. Have you not reserved any blessing for me?
- 10:56Speaker 2: Please do not leave me here alone. Isaac was enraged
- 11:01Speaker 2: at Jacob, yet could not recant his blessing over him.
- 11:05Speaker 2: I have made him lord over you, Isaac said. I
- 11:09Speaker 2: have blessed him as an inheritor of all God has
- 11:12Speaker 2: given me, and you will serve under him. Esau wept bitterly.
- 11:20Speaker 2: His face fell into his hands as he managed to ask,
- 11:23Speaker 2: Is there any blessing you can give me? Anything at all?
- 11:29Speaker 2: Isaac spoke again in ancient poetry. Welling up with sadness
- 11:33Speaker 2: for his son, he spoke saying, Behold, away from the
- 11:38Speaker 2: richness of the earth you shall dwell, and away from
- 11:42Speaker 2: the dew of heaven on high, You shall live by
- 11:45Speaker 2: your sword, and you shall serve your brother. But when
- 11:49Speaker 2: you grow restless, you shall break his yoke from your neck.
- 11:54Speaker 2: A dark part of Esau's heart was awakened that day.
- 11:58Speaker 2: Thousands of generations had passed since Cain had killed his
- 12:01Speaker 2: brother Abel, yet that same hatred lingered, seeking whom it
- 12:05Speaker 2: may take hold of. When Isaac had breathed his last,
- 12:10Speaker 2: and went to be with his father Abraham, Esau sighed
- 12:14Speaker 2: a deep breath and said the days of mourning my
- 12:18Speaker 2: father are approaching after I mourn I will kill my
- 12:23Speaker 2: brother Jacob Esau spoke these words to himself yet they
- 12:28Speaker 2: caught the ear of his mother Rebekah she sent for
- 12:31Speaker 2: Jacob and said to him your brother plans to kill
- 12:34Speaker 2: you after he has mourned your father gather your things
- 12:38Speaker 2: and flee to my brother Laban he will take care
- 12:40Speaker 2: of you until your brother's fury subsides So Jacob fled
- 12:44Speaker 2: in the dead of night and waited there until his
- 12:47Speaker 2: brother's anger dimmed and he could return to claim what
- 12:51Speaker 2: was now rightfully his.
- 12:56Speaker 3: As we begin today's passage, there is a famine sweeping
- 12:59Speaker 3: across the land. Isaac and his family are unable to
- 13:02Speaker 3: stay where they are and the Lord speaks to Isaac
- 13:05Speaker 3: to tell him where not to go and where he
- 13:07Speaker 3: should settle. This was not a case of Isaac fleeing
- 13:11Speaker 3: in fear and not trusting God. He was following God's
- 13:14Speaker 3: direction and taking his family to a better place for
- 13:17Speaker 3: a season. Sadly, his trust only went so far because
- 13:21Speaker 3: just like his father Abraham on two separate occasions, Isaac
- 13:26Speaker 3: feared for his life in a land of pagans and
- 13:28Speaker 3: he told people that Rebecca was his sister. Rather than
- 13:33Speaker 3: being the leader and protector she needed, Isaac thought of
- 13:36Speaker 3: his own safety more highly than that of his wife's.
- 13:40Speaker 3: And just like his father, his lies found out by
- 13:42Speaker 3: the king, Isaac discovers that he has underestimated the righteousness
- 13:47Speaker 3: of those around him, but worse, he failed to trust God. Nevertheless,
- 13:52Speaker 3: God blesses Isaac in his planting efforts, and Isaac bears
- 13:57Speaker 3: much fruit from this land. Eventually, this does not sit
- 14:00Speaker 3: well with the locals, who become envious of him. Soon,
- 14:05Speaker 3: Isaac and his family are forced to leave and wander.
- 14:08Speaker 3: meeting opposition and conflict at every turn. But once again,
- 14:12Speaker 3: we see God remaining faithful to his promise. He protects
- 14:16Speaker 3: and blesses Isaac and his family and provides for them. Isaac,
- 14:20Speaker 3: following the good example of his father this time, digs
- 14:24Speaker 3: wells as a form of remembering God's faithfulness. There is
- 14:29Speaker 3: a great importance in setting up ways of remembering what
- 14:32Speaker 3: God has done. You may not build an altar or
- 14:35Speaker 3: dig a well or erect a monument, but you can
- 14:38Speaker 3: still do things that help you remember what God has
- 14:42Speaker 3: done in your life and your family. The next thing
- 14:45Speaker 3: we find in our story is Esau, who has grown bitter.
- 14:49Speaker 3: Likely as a result of giving up his birthright, he
- 14:52Speaker 3: is married and he and his wife show utter contempt
- 14:55Speaker 3: for his parents. And yet, even as he grows old
- 14:58Speaker 3: and blind, Isaac continues to choose Esau as his favorite.
- 15:03Speaker 3: It is to him that Isaac intends to give his
- 15:05Speaker 3: paternal blessing. But Jacob wants that blessing. It's worth noting
- 15:11Speaker 3: that Jacob wasn't wrong to want the blessing. He was
- 15:14Speaker 3: seeking God and his favor. The intention, the desire itself
- 15:18Speaker 3: was not wrong. In fact, it was a good thing
- 15:20Speaker 3: to want the blessing of God. The problem was how
- 15:24Speaker 3: he went about getting it. Jacob, prompted by his mother, Rebecca,
- 15:29Speaker 3: schemes with her to take this blessing away from his brother.
- 15:33Speaker 3: They take advantage of Isaac's frailty and inattention and trick
- 15:37Speaker 3: him into thinking Jacob is his older brother. This was
- 15:41Speaker 3: no simple deception. They went to great lengths to ensure
- 15:45Speaker 3: it was Jacob and not Esau who would get the blessing.
- 15:49Speaker 3: So while Esau is out hunting to make a meal
- 15:51Speaker 3: for his old and dying father, we see here in
- 15:54Speaker 3: this passage a total severing of the family bond. The
- 15:58Speaker 3: deceit and bitterness and jealousy and rivalry has reached maturity.
- 16:04Speaker 3: Esau is consumed with anger and hatred towards his brother
- 16:07Speaker 3: and vows to kill him, an echo of the first
- 16:09Speaker 3: two brothers in history, Cain and Abel. Jacob, despite having
- 16:13Speaker 3: received the blessing, is terrified and forced to run away
- 16:16Speaker 3: to Rebekah's family where he will live for many years.
- 16:20Speaker 3: There's so much to be learned in this story. Once again,
- 16:23Speaker 3: we see the destructiveness of favoritism. But there's something even deeper.
- 16:28Speaker 3: Rather than getting his house in order as his life
- 16:31Speaker 3: neared to an end, Isaac was interested only in filling
- 16:34Speaker 3: his stomach. Listen to the words of Genesis 27, 2, 3,
- 16:39Speaker 3: and 4. Isaac said, Behold, now I am old, and
- 16:44Speaker 3: I do not know the day of my death. Now then,
- 16:47Speaker 3: please take your gear, your quiver, and your bow, and
- 16:49Speaker 3: go out to the field and hunt game for me,
- 16:52Speaker 3: and prepare a savory dish for me such as I love,
- 16:55Speaker 3: and bring it to me that I may eat, so
- 16:57Speaker 3: that my soul may bless you before I die. Isaac,
- 17:01Speaker 3: knowing that he would soon die, could have brought his
- 17:03Speaker 3: sons together along with his wife and charged them with
- 17:06Speaker 3: maintaining unity and love and continuing trust in God. Instead,
- 17:11Speaker 3: all he wanted was dinner. It would take years for
- 17:14Speaker 3: this family conflict to resolve, and by then so much
- 17:19Speaker 3: had been lost. While Abraham was a shining example of
- 17:23Speaker 3: how to carefully order one's last days to ensure a
- 17:26Speaker 3: legacy that honors God, Isaac's life shines as a light
- 17:30Speaker 3: on the danger of selfishness and self-indulgence. May we seek
- 17:35Speaker 3: to be more like Abraham and less like Isaac in
- 17:39Speaker 3: our old age. Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for this
- 17:42Speaker 3: story and how you continue to show yourself faithful and
- 17:45Speaker 3: true to Isaac, even as he stumbled and failed to
- 17:49Speaker 3: trust in you. Thank you also for the valuable lesson
- 17:52Speaker 3: about family and the warnings about dishonesty, favoritism, and being
- 17:56Speaker 3: passive in our leadership with our children. Help us to
- 18:00Speaker 3: honor you with our families. In Jesus' name, amen. Thank
