- 0:20Hey, everyone.
- 0:20Hope you guys are having a great day.
- 0:22And, uh, man, summer's winding up here, kids are going back to school.
- 0:26We're getting close to hunting season and getting those dogs in the field.
- 0:31And man, I am looking forward to it.
- 0:34Getting a little crispness in the mornings, a little fall, cool temperatures in the air, that is, um, that's getting exciting of things.
- 0:43So hey, in this podcast, I sit down with Tim Brown.
- 0:48He is, um, has Beyond the Point podcast.
- 0:54Uh, that's a great podcast.
- 0:55Really encourage you guys to go ahead and give him a listen if you're into bird dogs and hunting.

- 1:05He's also The Bearded Uplander on Instagram.
- 1:09Uh, we had a great conversation.
- 1:11And, uh, man, Tim's...
- 1:12He's a passionate guy.
- 1:13He's, he's, he's down to earth.
- 1:15He's gonna tell you how it is.
- 1:17And, uh, he loves his dogs.
- 1:19He loves Uh, bird hunting with him, and he's doing some cool stuff.
- 1:24He's really big into men's, uh, mental health.
- 1:27Um, I think men's mental health in our society in general, we're just supposed to be the, the tough guys that, uh...
- 1:34And, uh, and we are, but, and we're not too big into sharing our feelings or thoughts or when times get hard.
- 1:42And for all of us, we- times will get hard or, or do, do get hard.
- 1:48So, um, we're not all alone.
- 1:50We're not perfect, and we are mortals, and, and life is hard, and a lot of us deal with mental issues.
- 1:55But, um, uh, Tim is a really big advocate of helping, helping fellow hunters out and helping fellow friends out and guys with mental health, um, issues.
- 2:06So that was cool to learn about from him, and then we talked about shotguns, and we talked about dogs and his background on how he got into this whole, uh, uh, the Bearded Uplanders thing and Beyond the Point podcast.
- 2:18So if you guys wanna learn more about him and more about his background and all these, and we go into a bunch of different subjects.
- 2:26I'm not gonna tell you what they are'cause it's exciting, and you gotta listen to it and find it in the podcast.
- 2:31Go ahead and, uh, uh, listen to this podcast.
- 2:33I hope you guys enjoy it.
- 2:35Um, and as always, check out, um, our partners in the show links.
- 2:39We really appreciate that.
- 2:40Give us a follow on, uh, Utah, uh, if you go to Utah Bird Dog Training on Instagram, that's our training, um, training social media thing.
- 2:50Uh, we're gonna try to do better at getting some, uh, continued posts on there.
- 2:54And then Fieldbred Golden Retrievers is our, our breeding website for hunting goldens.
- 2:59We are kinda taking a pause on taking deposits right now.
- 3:03We really appreciate the interest, but we kinda have some younger females that are transitioning into, um, our program and putting titles on them and health clearances.
- 3:11And so there's a teeny bit of lag on our breeding right there with those.
- 3:16And then follow us on The Bird Dog Podcast on Instagram.
- 3:19And if you have any questions or you wanna be, um, on the show or, and you have some cool stuff you think you could share or you have training questions, um, send us, um, an email to thebirddogpodcast@gmail.com, and we'll check those out.
- 3:33And, uh, maybe we'll have you on the show or we'll, um, if you got a cool product or something like that, or, um, if you have a training question, you can go ahead and send it in there, and we'll try to get that training question answered for you.
- 3:46So as always, appreciate you guys listening.
- 3:49I know your time is valuable, and, uh, hope, um, the show will be entertaining and also, um, instructional.
- 3:57And, um, we'll, we'll see you in the next one.
- 4:00Have a great day, guys, and enjoy.
- 4:04Tyce: Hey, folks.
- 4:05Tyce: Welcome to the Birddog podcast.
- 4:07Tyce: My name is Ty Erickson.
- 4:08Tyce: I will be your host today of the show, and I got my friend on here, Tim Brown, from the Bearded Uplander and Beyond the Point radio, uh, podcast, radio show, podcast that we call it, Tim?
- 4:21Tim Brown: Yeah, podcast.
- 4:22Tim Brown: I, I
- 4:23Tyce: Podcast
- 4:23Tim Brown: up on my thing here.
- 4:24Tim Brown: Hold on just a second.
- 4:27Tim Brown: I don't know why that notification came up.
- 4:29Tim Brown: That was weird.
- 4:30Tyce: Are we good still?
- 4:32Tim Brown: Yeah, I just...
- 4:33Tim Brown: It came
- 4:33Tyce: Do we need to start over or are we still good?
- 4:35Tim Brown: nope,
- 4:35Tyce: Okay.
- 4:36Tim Brown: good.
- 4:36Tyce: We're raw, we're, we're raw here, people
- 4:38Tim Brown: Well, yeah, yeah, it's just a couple of j- just a couple of dummies trying to run soc-
- 4:42Tyce: Yeah.
- 4:43Tim Brown: to run, uh,
- 4:44Tyce: Technology.
- 4:46Tim Brown: Yeah.
- 4:47Tim Brown: I'm just a bird hunter.
- 4:48Tim Brown: I don't know about this stuff, man.
- 4:50Tyce: I'm a dog trainer, man, so we're in the same, we're in the same two rookies trying to figure this out.
- 4:55Tyce: So anyhow, at least, at least we're passionate about what we do, so that makes it easy.
- 5:00Tim Brown: That's exactly right
- 5:02Tyce: So, um, okay.
- 5:03Tyce: Well, I want-- Tim, grateful for your time.
- 5:05Tyce: Thank you for coming on here.
- 5:07Tyce: I know you're a busy guy, um, and I'm excited to get to know you better and hear more about you.
- 5:11Tyce: I've been following you on social media, and we have a common friend, uh, Ben Proctor with, uh, BPro Kennels.
- 5:18Tyce: He's a great guy and, um, so we'll probably, maybe we'll dive into that a little bit too.
- 5:23Tyce: But, uh, give us, just give us a background about you and, and, uh, tell me, tell me about your hunting.
- 5:30Tyce: I guess, where, as a hunter, where did you start?
- 5:32Tyce: Where do you-- Have you been hunting since you were a little kid?
- 5:35Tyce: Where you get, did you get into hunting later?
- 5:37Tyce: Let's first talk about hunting, so.
- 5:39Tim Brown: Okay.
- 5:40Tim Brown: Uh, so my dad and my brothers, I've got two older brothers and then my dad, and, and my brothers are 10 plus years older than me.
- 5:48Tim Brown: So they were, they were hunting when they were younger too, and then when I got young enough, they were practically adults, so I would just tag along with them.
- 5:58Tim Brown: And I'd more, more than times, or more times than not, I would sit in the car while they went out and walked a draw in eastern Iowa and, and that's how you hunted pretty much back then, was there was draws and, and there was big chunks of CRP too back then.
- 6:12Tim Brown: But it was mostly just little walks, and I'd sit there and wait and they'd come back or, or then when I got old enough, I would walk with them.
- 6:19Tim Brown: And, then finally, you know, 10, 12 years old, started to carry a gun, started to walk with them and, that was in the early...
- 6:30Tim Brown: late, late'80s, early'90s when I started doing that.
- 6:32Tim Brown: So it
- 6:33Tyce: Okay
- 6:33Tim Brown: in the peak of the CRP boom in Iowa where there was literally pheasants everywhere.
- 6:40Tim Brown: I mean, Iowa, Iowa rivaled South Dakota for pheasant numbers in,
- 6:44Tyce: Wow
- 6:45Tim Brown: those years.
- 6:47Tim Brown: And then, uh, the CRP started coming out, and it just kept getting harder and harder and harder to hunt birds, and they were just disappearing.
- 6:54Tim Brown: We had a really bad storm in'97, the year that I graduated, that, really put a hurting on the bird population back
- 7:01Tyce: Mm.
- 7:02Tim Brown: and it never really recovered for the longest time just because of farming practices and, and the way things go, and prices and all that stuff.
- 7:11Tim Brown: So they're starting to come back now.
- 7:13Tim Brown: There's people that are putting more, uh, acres into set-aside and stuff like that.
- 7:18Tim Brown: It's just, it's not near what it was in, like, the early'90s, right?
- 7:22Tyce: What, what were they pulling the CRP?
- 7:24Tyce: What were they, what are they replacing the CRP with?
- 7:27Tim Brown: You went right back to corn and beans.
- 7:29Tyce: Okay
- 7:30Tim Brown: uh, in the'80s when they, when they made that program, the CRP program, it was to offset the surplus of grain that we had.
- 7:38Tim Brown: We had too much, and it was driving the price down.
- 7:41Tyce: So they paid farmers to put it into CRP, right?
- 7:44Tyce: Is that what it was?
- 7:45Tim Brown: that's how the
- 7:45Tyce: Mm-hmm.
- 7:46Tim Brown: like, kinda took off,
- 7:48Tyce: Yeah
- 7:49Tim Brown: my recollection anyway.
- 7:50Tim Brown: I mean, like, don't quote me on anything.
- 7:51Tim Brown: I'm not
- 7:52Tyce: Sure.
- 7:53Tim Brown: on this stuff, but
- 7:54Tyce: Check the facts, folks.
- 7:55Tim Brown: yeah.
- 7:56Tim Brown: Yeah,
- 7:56Tyce: we're gonna...
- 7:56Tyce: We're sharing best of our knowledge.
- 7:58Tim Brown: Yeah, yeah.
- 7:59Tim Brown: So when that stuff started going away, um, the CRP program took a dive.
- 8:05Tim Brown: I mean, it went from, like, 30...
- 8:07Tim Brown: I can't remember.
- 8:07Tim Brown: It was, like, 32-some million acres of ground went down to, like, 24
- 8:12Tyce: Oh, wow
- 8:13Tim Brown: And it's a 10-year program, so, like, it's only...
- 8:16Tim Brown: You're only out of circul- or out of, you know, uh, production for 10 years, and then it comes up again.
- 8:23Tim Brown: And if you wanna enroll it again, a new price for the...
- 8:27Tim Brown: it per acre, and it's a new...
- 8:28Tim Brown: it...
- 8:29Tim Brown: Everything's new, right?
- 8:30Tyce: Mm-hmm.
- 8:31Tim Brown: off of what your, um, revenue is on the ground or whatever.
- 8:36Tim Brown: I, I, I don't know the technical terms of it, but it goes by what production is on your ground before, you
- 8:43Tyce: corn out there, is, is it silage they're harvesting or is it more dr- they're letting it dry out on the stalk and then harvest it?
- 8:50Tyce: Plant field cor- or yeah, what are they doing with
- 8:52Tim Brown: it's f- it's field corn.
- 8:54Tim Brown: It just
- 8:55Tyce: Okay.
- 8:55Tim Brown: lot of it goes to, like, feed for cattle or hogs or whatever,
- 9:00Tyce: Yeah
- 9:00Tim Brown: Iowa's got more...
- 9:01Tim Brown: Like the c- couple counties up by me have more hogs than they do people.
- 9:05Tyce: Mm-hmm.
- 9:06Tim Brown: and, like,
- 9:07Tyce: Oh, wow.
- 9:07Tim Brown: in the...
- 9:08Tim Brown: More hogs in those counties than the whole state of Iowa has people, kind of thing.
- 9:12Tim Brown: So
- 9:12Tyce: Oh, wow.
- 9:13Tyce: Okay.
- 9:14Tyce: Lot of hog
- 9:14Tim Brown: A
- 9:15Tyce: farming out there
- 9:16Tim Brown: and there's a lot of beef, too.
- 9:17Tim Brown: It's not near as big, but there's a lot of dairy up here, too.
- 9:20Tim Brown: So, like, they'll take the silage off or they'll take, you know, they'll chop all kinds of stuff.
- 9:26Tim Brown: So it's a little, little more diverse up here, but it's
- 9:29Tyce: Mhm.
- 9:30Tim Brown: it's still mostly corn and beans.
- 9:32Tim Brown: And then some gets taken for ethanol.
- 9:34Tim Brown: I mean, everything is...
- 9:35Tim Brown: It,
- 9:36Tyce: Ja
- 9:36Tim Brown: revolves around that ethanol stuff.
- 9:38Tim Brown: So it's, it's a losing battle, you know, in the long run.
- 9:42Tim Brown: We're losing more acres than we know what to do with.
- 9:46Tim Brown: And I mean, you can tell in some parts of the state that the pheasant population, it shows it.
- 9:51Tim Brown: And our deer population, it shows it.
- 9:54Tyce: Hm.
- 9:54Tim Brown: I mean, when you think Iowa, you're thinking big deer, right?
- 9:57Tyce: Ja,
- 9:58Tim Brown: it just, it's going the wrong way.
- 10:00Tim Brown: We've had, we've had some meetings and, and stuff like that, that they want public input, and there just isn't a whole lot of deer in certain counties, trying to figure out why.
- 10:10Tim Brown: And, you know, the EHD comes, and it, it, it really hits us hard when it's, when it happens.
- 10:15Tim Brown: But, um, that's just another aspect of it or whatever.
- 10:20Tim Brown: We can talk about that later.
- 10:21Tim Brown: But going
- 10:21Tyce: Sure.
- 10:22Tyce: Is the farming just...
- 10:24Tyce: Yeah, sorry, real quick.
- 10:25Tyce: Is the f- the farming is just too clean, right?
- 10:27Tyce: Is that kinda allows the birds not to have the cover and the nesting, and then that affects everything?
- 10:32Tyce: Yeah.
- 10:32Tim Brown: mean, it, it's great...
- 10:34Tim Brown: Corn and beans are great cover in the summer
- 10:36Tyce: Sure.
- 10:37Tyce: Yeah
- 10:37Tim Brown: don't have anything that can get them in the summer.
- 10:39Tim Brown: It's when you pick it all, and then it's just bare dirt
- 10:43Tyce: Fair ground, yeah.
- 10:44Tim Brown: the winter is the time that they need
- 10:47Tyce: Hammers are the worst.
- 10:48Tyce: Yeah.
- 10:49Tyce: Yep, yep
- 10:50Tim Brown: and that's the good thing about the, like this northwest corner of the state.
- 10:53Tim Brown: There's a lot of crick lines and a lot of draws that in the spring, they fill up with water too much, and you can't really just, like, tile
- 11:02Tyce: Clean them out
- 11:03Tim Brown: clean it out.
- 11:04Tim Brown: So there's always gonna be something there.
- 11:06Tim Brown: It's just we're gonna have a bad winter one of these years, and it's really gonna sock us
- 11:10Tyce: Yeah.
- 11:11Tim Brown: just because they don't have any of that thermal cover.
- 11:14Tim Brown: And the wood lots help a lot.
- 11:15Tim Brown: Like, everybody that's got an acreage usually has a wood lot,
- 11:19Tyce: Yeah
- 11:19Tim Brown: there's a lot getting torn out now for people building new houses and stuff.
- 11:22Tim Brown: I mean, it just, just, it's...
- 11:25Tim Brown: 10 years that I've lived up here, it's, it's considerably different.
- 11:28Tim Brown: Like,
- 11:29Tyce: Mm-hmm.
- 11:30Tim Brown: knew that were there that you drive by it, you would never think that there was something there, and it used to hold hundreds of pheasants, and it's just gone.
- 11:40Tim Brown: And it doesn't
- 11:41Tyce: Hmm.
- 11:41Tim Brown: like it's gone, right?
- 11:42Tyce: Yeah, but they do seem, they're, they seem to be doing a little better the last couple years though.
- 11:48Tim Brown: yeah, our, our pheasant population, I've hunted up here for 20 years, and it's never really, like fell way off.
- 11:55Tyce: Mm-hmm
- 11:56Tim Brown: just because it's a little hillier, it's a little nastier, and they can't, they can't, like get a whole lot, um, that they haven't already gotten, right?
- 12:05Tim Brown: So it, the, the cover's still there.
- 12:08Tim Brown: There's a lot of farmers up here that, that are pheasant hunters too that
- 12:12Tyce: Ja
- 12:13Tim Brown: to keep some ground around.
- 12:15Tim Brown: So like that core area that they have, yeah, there's gonna...
- 12:20Tim Brown: You might not be able to hunt it, but that's just a place for all them birds to go in that real nasty time of the season,
- 12:25Tyce: Ja, ja.
- 12:26Tim Brown: spread out to the s- the thinner stuff earlier in the season when it's nice out, you know?
- 12:31Tyce: Mm-hmm
- 12:32Tim Brown: then when it gets really nasty, they go, they go back to that.
- 12:35Tim Brown: So there,
- 12:37Tyce: Cool.
- 12:37Tim Brown: just, it is what it is, you know?
- 12:40Tyce: Yeah, cool
- 12:41Tim Brown: uh, so going back to, to how I grew up, um, I got out of bird hunting all together in the late two...
- 12:49Tim Brown: or the late'90s, early 2000s.
- 12:51Tim Brown: I, my brother lives
- 12:53Tyce: Those were probably some dark years, huh?
- 12:55Tim Brown: Uh, yeah, I mean, it was, we just, we just foc- refocused onto deer hunting instead, right?
- 13:01Tyce: Okay.
- 13:02Tim Brown: um, down south of Des Moines, my brother lives down there, and we got into deer hunting pretty good, and had, had some really good ground that we hunted.
- 13:10Tim Brown: Shot some really good deer.
- 13:12Tim Brown: But I didn't, didn't really...
- 13:16Tim Brown: I'm not really a guy that can sit still very often.
- 13:18Tim Brown: I don't like just, just sitting in one place.
- 13:20Tyce: Mm-hmm.
- 13:21Tim Brown: I always wanted to, and then working with one of my best friends at a, at a warehouse in Cedar Rapids, and that year, it would've been 2007, of January 2007, he brought me up here to his family, family farm, and it was the last weekend of the season, it was in January, and we shot the piss out of them.
- 13:42Tim Brown: There was birds everywhere and I'm like,"Okay, this,
- 13:45Tyce: This is what I've been missing.
- 13:46Tim Brown: this is what I've been missing." And the bad thing wa- like I got done, we got done, and I'm like,"You know what?
- 13:52Tim Brown: This, I, the, I, I wanna do this."'Cause they had, my buddies had really great dogs back then,
- 13:58Tyce: Mm-hmm.
- 13:59Tim Brown: If I want my own dog, I wanna do this.
- 14:01Tim Brown: I'm, I'm, that's it, I'm done.
- 14:02Tim Brown: I'm not gonna go deer hunting anymore.
- 14:04Tim Brown: I'm going up there to go bird hunting."
- 14:06Tyce: Ja.
- 14:06Tim Brown: And so that spring I got Gus, which was my wirehaired that, my first dog that I had.
- 14:12Tim Brown: And
- 14:13Tyce: So previous to this, sorry, I'm gonna cut in here if that's all right.
- 14:16Tyce: Previous, you, you didn't have dogs growing up or you did have dogs growing up?
- 14:20Tim Brown: We did, we did, but they were outside dogs and it was, you know, they're hunting dogs that get out, know, four, five times a year, you know what I mean?
- 14:29Tim Brown: And
- 14:30Tyce: う ー ん。 う ー ん。 Yeah
- 14:34Tim Brown: the time or we're, we're running working dogs.
- 14:37Tim Brown: I mean, you're not, you're not going crazy with it, but like they were just, they were just
- 14:42Tyce: Kind of a dog that you take out here and there and just if it, they found some birds and just kind of rough training and stuff makes sense.
- 14:50Tim Brown: and it, it,
- 14:51Tyce: I got a fly around here
- 14:53Tim Brown: you know, you didn't have to work that hard for birds back then,'cause
- 14:56Tyce: Yeah.
- 14:56Tim Brown: literally, there was birds everywhere.
- 14:58Tyce: Yeah.
- 14:59Tim Brown: it wasn't the...
- 15:00Tim Brown: Like, you didn't have to have really good
- 15:03Tyce: good dogs.
- 15:03Tyce: Yeah
- 15:04Tim Brown: to worry about, you had to worry about, you know, bumping birds because you could go another 20 yards and there's gonna be 10 more.
- 15:10Tim Brown: You know what
- 15:10Tyce: Sure.
- 15:11Tyce: Yeah, yeah
- 15:12Tim Brown: So it, it, it, it went that way.
- 15:14Tim Brown: But then when I got him, I just said I, I was done.
- 15:18Tim Brown: And we went up there, uh, we
- 15:20Tyce: Was he a Griff or what was he?
- 15:21Tim Brown: Nope, it was just a straight wire
- 15:23Tyce: Oh, a stray warrior.
- 15:24Tyce: Okay
- 15:24Tim Brown: story of all that was my brother had really good short hairs, um, he gonna have puppies, and my brother and one of our good friends, one of our good friends had the male that was breeding to him.
- 15:38Tyce: Угу
- 15:40Tim Brown: choice of litter,'cause that was the, you know, that's how you do it when you breed dogs.
- 15:45Tim Brown: uh, then my other brother was getting a puppy also, and then I was gonna get one.
- 15:50Tim Brown: Well, she had complications.
- 15:51Tim Brown: She got septic.
- 15:52Tim Brown: She lost
- 15:53Tyce: Oh, man.
- 15:54Tim Brown: half of the puppies.
- 15:55Tim Brown: She had three puppies total.
- 15:57Tim Brown: So I was out.
- 15:58Tim Brown: I was the
- 15:58Tyce: Mm.
- 15:59Tim Brown: out, which was fine.
- 16:00Tyce: Mm
- 16:01Tim Brown: my buddy Randy, Randy, his bro- or his cousin grew wire, or raised wire hairs, and I knew the, the family, so I wasn't like, like,"Yeah, that, perfect.
- 16:12Tim Brown: I'll, I'll take one of those." And the crazy thing is, like, everybody asks, like,"How do you pick out a dog?" And all this and that.
- 16:18Tim Brown: I didn't see Gus um, he was brought to me.
- 16:22Tim Brown: I,
- 16:23Tyce: OK
- 16:24Tim Brown: I told Terry's dad,'cause Terry's dad raised dogs for, I don't know, my entire life.
- 16:30Tim Brown: I don't,
- 16:30Tyce: Mm-hmm.
- 16:31Tim Brown: he had been raising dogs.
- 16:33Tim Brown: I said,"John, just whatever one that you would take, that's the one I want."
- 16:36Tyce: Mm-hmm.
- 16:37Tim Brown: So he brought me Gus and, and it was, it, it was done.
- 16:41Tim Brown: I was
- 16:42Tyce: How old was he when you got-- how old was Gus when you got him?
- 16:44Tim Brown: eight, eight weeks.
- 16:46Tim Brown: He
- 16:46Tyce: Oh, eight weeks.
- 16:46Tyce: Okay, so he was a puppy.
- 16:47Tyce: He didn't have him.
- 16:48Tyce: Okay.
- 16:48Tim Brown: a baby.
- 16:49Tyce: Yeah
- 16:50Tim Brown: brought him up'cause he was coming back.
- 16:51Tim Brown: 'Cause they live in Missouri, so he was bringing him back up for, I don't know what it was, their family reunion or something, and he brought him up and then it, yeah, I was done.
- 16:59Tim Brown: was it.
- 17:00Tim Brown: It over.
- 17:01Tim Brown: Didn't wanna do, I don't wanna do anything else than that.
- 17:04Tyce: Yeah.
- 17:05Tim Brown: yeah.
- 17:06Tyce: What made you decide to get a wire hair over a GSP?
- 17:10Tim Brown: It was just the,
- 17:11Tyce: That you knew him?
- 17:12Tim Brown: that I
- 17:13Tyce: Yeah
- 17:13Tim Brown: I knew the dogs, I knew how good, you know, the, they were, um, high retrieving ability, you know,
- 17:21Tyce: う ー ん、 う ー ん。 う ー ん。 Good
- 17:31Tim Brown: out now.
- 17:31Tim Brown: Like, the kennel that I got Mack and, uh, Ansel from, his dogs are...
- 17:36Tim Brown: I don't, I don't think that I've ever to work with him on retrieving.
- 17:40Tim Brown: They j- it's just natural, and that's how he breeds them.
- 17:43Tim Brown: Like, he's not gonna breed anything that doesn't have that natural...
- 17:46Tyce: retrieve.
- 17:47Tyce: Yeah.
- 17:47Tim Brown: yeah.
- 17:48Tim Brown: And, you know, with the short hair, that's kinda sometimes, that's kind of a hard thing to,
- 17:52Tyce: Sure.
- 17:52Tyce: Yeah.
- 17:53Tim Brown: right?
- 17:54Tim Brown: So that, that's kinda how I pick them out.
- 17:56Tim Brown: Like, um, Terry's actually, uh, we're trying to get his female bred that would be what would it be?
- 18:04Tim Brown: Great niece or niece or something.
- 18:07Tim Brown: line's still there, so we're trying
- 18:09Tyce: Mm-hmm.
- 18:12Tyce: Mm-hmm.
- 18:13Tyce: When did you, when did you pick up Gus again?
- 18:15Tyce: What year was that?
- 18:16Tim Brown: It would've been 2007.
- 18:18Tim Brown: It would've been
- 18:19Tyce: 2007.
- 18:20Tim Brown: Yep
- 18:21Tyce: So that's nine- yeah, 19 years ago or whatever.
- 18:25Tim Brown: Yeah.
- 18:25Tyce: Gosh
- 18:25Tim Brown: and then the crazy thing, this dog that we're talking about, I can't remember if it's his dad, or her dad or her grandpa, uh, he lived to be, um, 17
- 18:36Tyce: Holy cow.
- 18:37Tyce: Gus is,
- 18:38Tim Brown: be
- 18:38Tyce: Gus...
- 18:39Tim Brown: was, yeah, littermate brother, was 17 and
- 18:41Tyce: Wow.
- 18:43Tyce: Wow
- 18:43Tim Brown: Gus lived to be 15, so yeah, it
- 18:46Tyce: That's some good longevity in those, that, that line.
- 18:50Tim Brown: never understood how, how, uh, some dogs go that long
- 18:54Tyce: Yeah
- 18:55Tim Brown: out of the same breed, right?
- 18:57Tyce: It does seem like, it does seem like the pointers, like short hairs and stuff tend to live a little longer than like your retrievers.
- 19:03Tyce: Your labs and those, that bre- those breeds, you know?
- 19:05Tyce: It's, I mean, longest I've ever had is 13 and a half and, but most of them are passing between 12 and 13 on average I'd say, you know?
- 19:13Tyce: So you start getting 14, fi- I mean, that's, that's pretty amazing that they can make it that
- 19:20Tim Brown: c- the crazy thing is Gus hunted 13 years.
- 19:24Tim Brown: I mean,
- 19:24Tyce: Wow.
- 19:25Tim Brown: good 13
- 19:26Tyce: gonna ask you how his longevity, like at the end, how he, you know...
- 19:30Tim Brown: was cherry-picking.
- 19:31Tim Brown: You know what I
- 19:32Tyce: Yeah
- 19:32Tim Brown: year we cherry-picked a lot,'cause that would've been Mack's first year was his last year.
- 19:37Tyce: Oh, okay.
- 19:38Tim Brown: so Mack was, he was thrown right into the fire of, of everything.
- 19:42Tim Brown: So he, did really well at, you know, he was eight months when, when hunting season started and, and the first bird that fell, he went and retrieved it.
- 19:51Tim Brown: And
- 19:52Tyce: To Max a short hair?
- 19:54Tim Brown: Yep, Mack's a shorthair.
- 19:55Tyce: You have all short hairs now, right?
- 19:57Tim Brown: Yep, yep,
- 19:58Tyce: Okay
- 19:59Tim Brown: And they're bro- they're actually brothers, but not litter mate brothers, but same
- 20:04Tyce: Oh, okay.
- 20:05Tim Brown: Two years apart.
- 20:06Tyce: Two years apart.
- 20:07Tyce: And then you had...
- 20:08Tim Brown: Three years apart.
- 20:09Tyce: Oh, three years apart.
- 20:10Tyce: I know you had one you lost from something, right?
- 20:14Tyce: On solution
- 20:15Tim Brown: ca- uh, she had a, a tumor on right where her throat and her meet.
- 20:21Tyce: Hmm.
- 20:22Tim Brown: we were in, we were in North Dakota, and she was...
- 20:24Tim Brown: We'd just got to North Dakota, and she was acting funny, but she's always been a funny dog anyway.
- 20:31Tim Brown: Like, she was just not herself.
- 20:33Tyce: Mm-hmm
- 20:34Tim Brown: we were hunting, and she started throwing up, and it was all just nasty stuff.
- 20:38Tim Brown: And I'm like,"What is going
- 20:39Tyce: Was a, tell, like was it blood or was it pus?
- 20:42Tyce: Like what, or like acid looking stuff?
- 20:45Tim Brown: acid reflux
- 20:46Tyce: Yeah, yeah.
- 20:47Tim Brown: bile and stuff
- 20:48Tyce: Mm-hmm.
- 20:49Tim Brown: D- and she ate, so it wasn't like it was, like, out of the realm of, like, she just
- 20:55Tyce: Well, what was their energy like?
- 20:57Tim Brown: or It,
- 20:57Tyce: Yeah.
- 20:58Tim Brown: It wasn't, like, through the roof or anything, but she was,
- 21:01Tyce: Still doing the work.
- 21:03Tim Brown: Yeah, she was
- 21:04Tyce: yeah.
- 21:04Tyce: Mm-hmm
- 21:07Tim Brown: she really liked that.
- 21:09Tim Brown: didn't like when we were hunting, like, cattails or anything like that.
- 21:12Tim Brown: She liked that wide open, short grass.
- 21:15Tim Brown: She, she thrived in that.
- 21:17Tim Brown: She hunted better when she was in that kinda condition.
- 21:19Tim Brown: She was just a weird dog.
- 21:21Tim Brown: She'd,
- 21:21Tyce: Hmm.
- 21:22Tyce: Kind of quirky personality or what?
- 21:24Tim Brown: yep,
- 21:25Tyce: Yeah
- 21:25Tim Brown: she wanted to hunt and sometimes she's like, really feel like it today.
- 21:29Tim Brown: I'm just not gonna, you
- 21:30Tyce: I'll just kinda walk by you here, hang out.
- 21:32Tim Brown: yeah, typical females.
- 21:33Tim Brown: You know how that is.
- 21:35Tim Brown: yeah, so, so then sh- you know, we got back, and she just, when we got back she just started losing the weight, and it just was just She wouldn't eat anything, and
- 21:47Tyce: Mm-hmm.
- 21:48Tim Brown: and they did a, they did a scan and, and it was, it was just growing around the whole throat, and it was just cutting everything off.
- 21:58Tim Brown: So she wasn't comfortable, and then she got down to I- it was was all still there, like, mentally and loved on me, you know, d- everything that she usually did, but it was like, I can't watch her wither away to nothing and,
- 22:11Tyce: Yeah.
- 22:11Tim Brown: it,
- 22:12Tyce: What kind of cancer was it?
- 22:14Tim Brown: I don't know.
- 22:14Tim Brown: We didn't, we didn't
- 22:15Tyce: Okay.
- 22:16Tyce: Dig into it too much
- 22:17Tim Brown: she was almost 13 years old at that time,
- 22:20Tyce: Oh, she was 13.
- 22:21Tyce: I was gonna ask your age.
- 22:22Tyce: Yeah.
- 22:23Tim Brown: she was 12, but it was like, you know And it was a big mass, and it's like, it's
- 22:28Tyce: Put her, you don't wanna put her through that.
- 22:30Tyce: Yeah
- 22:31Tim Brown: you put chemo in a 13-year-old, 12-year-old dog, it's just not gonna
- 22:35Tyce: Yeah.
- 22:35Tim Brown: what I mean?
- 22:36Tim Brown: It's
- 22:36Tyce: A lot of money, she's old.
- 22:37Tyce: Yeah, it's not, yeah
- 22:39Tim Brown: her enjoy the last, you know, week that we had together, that we did have together, than be just sick and miserable for two months, and then it not even work, you know?
- 22:49Tyce: Yeah.
- 22:50Tim Brown: you know, you And that's the hardest thing about being a dog owner.
- 22:53Tim Brown: You gotta make that decision.
- 22:54Tyce: Sure.
- 22:55Tim Brown: they're not gonna, they're not gonna not, you know,
- 22:59Tyce: Yeah
- 22:59Tim Brown: up for you, you know what I mean?
- 23:01Tim Brown: So it's like,
- 23:02Tyce: It's like people when you see someone go through cancer and then they, you know, you kinda wanna, you feel, you wanna remember them for how they were, not like sometimes the last few months of their life when they're just withered away to nothing and they're not, you know.
- 23:15Tyce: So
- 23:16Tim Brown: I'd
- 23:16Tyce: not that
- 23:17Tim Brown: to
- 23:17Tyce: people and dogs are different, but
- 23:19Tim Brown: yeah.
- 23:20Tim Brown: Well, you hate to be selfish about it, right?
- 23:22Tim Brown: Especially
- 23:22Tyce: Yeah
- 23:23Tim Brown: yeah, I wish she was You know, it's kinda like my mom.
- 23:26Tim Brown: I wish she was still here, but the last three years of her life was just absolute hell and it's like, I
- 23:32Tyce: Hmm.
- 23:33Tim Brown: anybody.
- 23:34Tim Brown: So, you know, you have to m- you know, be a little selfish and, and you just have to not be that way, just
- 23:40Tyce: Make hard choices.
- 23:41Tyce: Yeah.
- 23:41Tyce: Hmm
- 23:42Tim Brown: yeah.
- 23:42Tim Brown: So did that and then, um, I got her back and I thought,"You know what?
- 23:47Tim Brown: I gotta put her with Gus,"'cause that was the spots that she liked to hunt was that short grass prairie out in, out in
- 23:53Tyce: Mm-hmm.
- 23:54Tim Brown: And I honestly think all my dogs are gonna be there, just because it's my favorite field in the entire country
- 24:00Tyce: That's cool
- 24:01Tim Brown: And like I was telling Tyler on his podcast, Tyler Webster, I was telling him, I was like, him and, and Aaron are one of, two of six people that know that exact spot.
- 24:12Tyce: Mm-hmm.
- 24:13Tim Brown: I'm not, I'm not like taking n- you know, anybody
- 24:16Tyce: It's a special spot.
- 24:17Tim Brown: Yeah,
- 24:18Tyce: Yeah, yeah.
- 24:19Tyce: It's kinda like holy ground, holy ground for you almost, right?
- 24:22Tim Brown: Yep, and there's people that
- 24:23Tyce: Yeah.
- 24:24Tim Brown: I mean, it's public
- 24:25Tyce: Sure
- 24:26Tim Brown: you know, it's always busy in there, but like legitimately I've never hunted that field in 20 years and not shot a grouse out of it.
- 24:33Tyce: Hmm.
- 24:34Tyce: Hmm.
- 24:34Tim Brown: that I visit that field, I shoot a grouse out of that
- 24:37Tyce: That's cool.
- 24:38Tyce: Yeah
- 24:38Tim Brown: and, and it's, it's right in the heart of the, the grasslands, so it's,
- 24:42Tyce: Mm-hmm。Yeah。
- 24:45Tim Brown: yeah, so I d- I just You know, like we had, like Tyler and I talked about it on the show.
- 24:50Tim Brown: If you Did you, did you watch the flush episode
- 24:52Tyce: I didn't see it, no.
- 24:54Tim Brown: Oh man, wait till it
- 24:55Tyce: Oh, yeah.
- 24:55Tim Brown: out.
- 24:56Tyce: Oh, okay
- 24:57Tim Brown: told him, I was like,"It's divine intervention." There's no doubt in my mind because we were sitting there doing the interview and there was 15 grouse that flew over like a, you know, like a, a air show.
- 25:11Tyce: Oh, really?
- 25:12Tim Brown: flew right over us while they're talking to or while they're doing the interview, flew right
- 25:15Tyce: Oh.
- 25:16Tim Brown: And then the roost, the pheasants are getting up behind me in the cattails and I'm like, can't tell me that it's not..." Oh,
- 25:23Tyce: Yeah.
- 25:24Tim Brown: in and there's a lec- that I've, I've hunted there 20 years and I've never seen chickens on that lec
- 25:29Tyce: Yeah.
- 25:30Tim Brown: su- or, or in the, in the fall.
- 25:32Tim Brown: There's
- 25:32Tyce: Mm-hmm.
- 25:33Tim Brown: out there.
- 25:34Tyce: Mm-hmm.
- 25:34Tim Brown: were out there fighting and just,
- 25:37Tyce: Yeah.
- 25:37Tim Brown: it's like yeah, there's
- 25:39Tyce: It's a way God's like,"Hey, we're-- I'm, I'm paying attention to you and your feelings, and I know, I'm aware of you." I think God, God's definitely in the details, man.
- 25:47Tyce: We don't realize how much, you know, that divine intervention is there, but yeah
- 25:51Tim Brown: about it.
- 25:52Tim Brown: And we had a, a, I mean, it was November, and we're shooting birds off of that are four yards in front of us.
- 25:58Tim Brown: It's
- 25:59Tyce: Ja.
- 25:59Tim Brown: prairie chickens don't cooperate in November, and they were,
- 26:02Tyce: Ja
- 26:03Tim Brown: they were all over us.
- 26:04Tim Brown: So it's, it's like, you know,
- 26:06Tyce: That's awesome.
- 26:07Tim Brown: way and it was awesome, so
- 26:08Tyce: I'll have to watch it.
- 26:09Tyce: So is it, is that on YouTube somewhere then right now or is it, is it not?
- 26:13Tyce: Oh, okay
- 26:14Tim Brown: be...
- 26:14Tim Brown: So it's the Outdoor Channel.
- 26:16Tim Brown: S- you
- 26:16Tyce: Oh, the Outdoor Channel now.
- 26:18Tim Brown: Channel, and then it, it aired a couple weeks ago, so it'll be, like, probably October before it comes.
- 26:25Tim Brown: Because they run it one- they run their episodes through one time,
- 26:29Tyce: Hmm.
- 26:30Tim Brown: and do it again.
- 26:31Tim Brown: And then in January it'll be on YouTube.
- 26:34Tim Brown: They'll have it
- 26:34Tyce: Oh, okay.
- 26:36Tyce: Off the watts that one
- 26:37Tim Brown: have to have, they have to have 13 weeks of, of shows, me, on the Outdoor Channel,
- 26:42Tyce: Before they throw it on YouTube.
- 26:44Tyce: Yeah.
- 26:44Tim Brown: it on YouTube.
- 26:45Tim Brown: Yep.
- 26:46Tyce: Yeah
- 26:46Tim Brown: really good.
- 26:47Tim Brown: I mean, it's, it was, it was, they did a good job.
- 26:49Tim Brown: They did a really good job of it, and there was hundreds of birds, if not thousands of birds that we saw that weekend.
- 26:55Tyce: Hmm.
- 26:56Tyce: What were you guys cha- mostly sh- was it sharptails, prairie chickens, pheasants?
- 27:00Tyce: What el-
- 27:01Tim Brown: Mostly
- 27:02Tyce: chicken.
- 27:02Tyce: Okay
- 27:03Tim Brown: did shoot a, I did shoot a sharpie, um, on the And they're all mixed in there all the way through, and then we shot a bunch of pheasants too, but I
- 27:11Tyce: Ja,
- 27:11Tim Brown: you
- 27:12Tyce: ja
- 27:12Tim Brown: Dakota, you might as well shoot some pheasants.
- 27:14Tim Brown: I mean,
- 27:14Tyce: Yeah.
- 27:15Tim Brown: and there's a
- 27:15Tyce: You know, I, I've never made it out to those grass- I need to get out there.
- 27:18Tyce: I've never killed a prairie chicken.
- 27:20Tyce: Um, I, you know, I, I kill so many pheasants in training where I've been training dogs for 20 years.
- 27:27Tyce: It's kind of like generally...
- 27:29Tyce: I still love upland hunting.
- 27:31Tyce: I have two set- I have two red setters, um, that are awesome, but I s- I've pushed a little more into the waterfowl just'cause it's all the handling and the blind retrieves, and it's just f- I mean, I enjoy it all, but it's kind of where it's become my occupation.
- 27:46Tyce: You know, I killed a lot of birds over dog.
- 27:48Tyce: It's, it's taken a little bit of the sting out of it, yeah, or the ex- ex-excitement, you know.
- 27:53Tyce: But I still, I mean, I gotta get out there'cause I have clients who are,"Hey, you gotta come out there and hunt birds with me." And I big game hunt.
- 28:00Tyce: I big game hunt, too, so it's just a pull of time, you know, but
- 28:04Tim Brown: The,
- 28:04Tyce: everything
- 28:05Tim Brown: Yeah, like you gotta, you gotta balance it out, and sometimes things have to be sacrificed,
- 28:11Tyce: Yeah, yeah.
- 28:12Tim Brown: Yeah.
- 28:12Tyce: But we, yeah, so I usually...
- 28:14Tyce: Yeah, go ahead
- 28:15Tim Brown: I say, I do that a lot because I've gotten a lot of invites to go elk hunting and, and, you know, hunting and stuff like that, and I just...
- 28:24Tim Brown: I'm usually getting ready, and it's like,"Yeah, I really want to," but a
- 28:29Tyce: Yes.
- 28:29Tim Brown: that s- the week after that hunt, I gotta be right back out here with the dogs, and I'm like,"I'm not pulling the dogs out here
- 28:35Tyce: Yeah.
- 28:36Tim Brown: doing an elk hunt," you know?
- 28:37Tim Brown: And
- 28:37Tyce: Mm-hmm.
- 28:39Tim Brown: just
- 28:39Tyce: Yeah, where you're connected in this community, I'm sure you could hunt probably anywhere pre- I'm sure you have plenty of invites and people.
- 28:47Tyce: You could go hunt full-time, you know,
- 28:49Tim Brown: Yeah.
- 28:50Tyce: work done too.
- 28:51Tim Brown: Uh, yeah, yeah.
- 28:52Tim Brown: It's, the, there's a lot of people that, that offer the invites, that's for sure, and a lot of
- 28:57Tyce: That's an awesome community.
- 28:58Tim Brown: there's some of them that I'm gonna take up on it because they're in places that I've never went.
- 29:02Tim Brown: So I'm like,"Okay,
- 29:04Tyce: Oh, for sure.
- 29:05Tim Brown: let's
- 29:05Tyce: Yeah
- 29:05Tim Brown: a little bit down there and see what we can get into," right?
- 29:08Tyce: Yeah.
- 29:09Tyce: Well, even if it's the same bird, right?
- 29:11Tyce: You're-- It's not the-- It's the people, it's the experience, it's the dogs, it's a new place, new terrain, you know, the new sights.
- 29:18Tyce: And s- you know, it's, you're s- hunting maybe with mountain peaks behind you where, you know, other places you're hunting in the marsh or open grasslands.
- 29:26Tyce: So it's just, that's all, that's all part of the experience.
- 29:29Tim Brown: the whole, that's the whole thing for me too is it...
- 29:32Tim Brown: I've gotten to the point where I've shot
- 29:34Tyce: Enough birds.
- 29:35Tim Brown: birds I've shot.
- 29:36Tim Brown: Like, want to go, I was talking to Travis Frank about this today.
- 29:40Tim Brown: I, I was like,"I want to go and enjoy it with people that are like-minded or my buddies or whatever," you know?
- 29:47Tim Brown: I want to go enjoy it and, and have all of the extra stuff, right?
- 29:52Tim Brown: I want all of the stuff that's not just us going out and shooting birds.
- 29:55Tim Brown: We can go out and shoot two birds and I'm gonna be just as happy.
- 29:59Tim Brown: You know, unless we miss a bunch of birds, then I'm not gonna be happy with myself, but like, we can just, you know, say we get two points, two, two birds fly up, we shoot two birds, and that's all we got for the day, I'm perfectly fine with
- 30:12Tyce: You're still having a good time.
- 30:14Tim Brown: Yeah.
- 30:14Tim Brown: I, I want to, I want to do all the things because I don't care what anybody says, only have so many days.
- 30:21Tyce: That's for sure, man
- 30:21Tim Brown: so many days in a lifetime, and I don't want to focus on one thing.
- 30:27Tim Brown: I want to enjoy everything.
- 30:28Tim Brown: Like, our opening day here in Iowa is that's a holy day.
- 30:33Tim Brown: That's like, you know, Easter Sunday or Christmas Day like, for us.
- 30:37Tim Brown: It's like, we're going
- 30:39Tyce: That's blocked out every year.
- 30:41Tyce: Don't mess around with that date.
- 30:42Tim Brown: even think about...
- 30:44Tyce: Yeah
- 30:45Tim Brown: just a little side note.
- 30:45Tim Brown: My niece is getting married this year, and she calls her dad, she's like,"Is this date gonna mess you up at all?" And it was October 10th, and he's like,"It's not gonna mess me up, but you better call your Uncle Tim'cause that's, that's a pretty big day." So
- 30:59Tyce: you want him there, if you want him there, don't plan it on that date.
- 31:02Tyce: Yeah
- 31:03Tim Brown: well, she, she called me and she goes,"This is the only time that I can get this place." I go,"Carissa, you...
- 31:09Tim Brown: I will be there.
- 31:10Tim Brown: You're
- 31:10Tyce: Mm-hmm.
- 31:11Tim Brown: married once.
- 31:12Tim Brown: I will be there, so don't worry about what day it's on.
- 31:15Tim Brown: But man, it sucks,'cause that's North Dakota's opener." It's like, damn it.
- 31:20Tim Brown: it, I'm not gonna make it to North Dakota this year unless I go later, so.
- 31:23Tim Brown: But I'm like, you know what?
- 31:25Tim Brown: It's fine.
- 31:26Tyce: Sure.
- 31:27Tyce: Yeah
- 31:27Tim Brown: I gotta do, you know, I, I'm gonna do anything for, know, my
- 31:32Tyce: Sure, family.
- 31:32Tyce: Yeah, family and people for...
- 31:34Tyce: Yeah, I have a niece too.
- 31:35Tyce: Funny, the same thing.
- 31:36Tyce: I'm supposed to be in Idaho deer hunting and elk hunting, and she's of course like,"Oh, my wedding's on Saturday." I'm like,"Oh, well that's the opener of my deer and elk hunt, but I guess I'll go Sun- I'll head out Sunday."
- 31:49Tim Brown: Yep, and, and that's just what, you know,'cause we have like...
- 31:53Tim Brown: with this Beyond the Point thing that I'm doing, we have, um, some hunts lined up and some, some stuff with Scheels that we've got lined up where I gotta be at the Scheels stores and whatnot.
- 32:02Tim Brown: Well, I gotta miss the one in North Dakota because just, you know, that's the wedding, so it's like I'm not
- 32:07Tyce: Yeah
- 32:08Tim Brown: for that.
- 32:08Tim Brown: So it's like everything going on, it's like trying to schedule around things is just
- 32:15Tyce: Yeah.
- 32:15Tim Brown: man.
- 32:16Tim Brown: It's
- 32:16Tyce: Yeah.
- 32:18Tyce: Well, tell us about, so the Bearded Uplander, that's where you kinda got started filming, right?
- 32:23Tyce: So were you just, like, starting to film for yourself?
- 32:25Tyce: You're like,"Ah, I just wanna film my hunts and throw them on social media," or what was your kinda thoughts behind it?
- 32:31Tim Brown: originally when I got my first GoPro, it was just to have...
- 32:36Tim Brown: Because I knew Gus wasn't gonna be there forever, it was just to have stuff for myself.
- 32:41Tyce: Mm-hmm.
- 32:41Tim Brown: when you put it on, like, social media, it was there, and you can always go back and look at
- 32:45Tyce: Sure.
- 32:46Tyce: Yeah.
- 32:47Tyce: Instead of dig it out of your old hard drive or whatever.
- 32:50Tim Brown: Yeah.
- 32:51Tim Brown: So I started doing that, and then, when he passed away...
- 32:56Tim Brown: Well, when he was getting sick is when I really started the page and getting...
- 33:00Tim Brown: He didn't get sick, but he, like, got really run down or whatever, and then we couldn't hunt anymore.
- 33:05Tim Brown: I'm like,"That's when I wanted to start, you know, I need to this with everybody because
- 33:11Tyce: Mhm.
- 33:11Tim Brown: goes through this," and I didn't want anybody else to, you know, not have some place that, like, I'm going through the same thing that you're going
- 33:19Tyce: Ja,
- 33:19Tim Brown: So it's
- 33:19Tyce: ja
- 33:20Tim Brown: you know.
- 33:21Tim Brown: And then, um, just kept posting stuff about that, about men's mental health, like that, and it just started getting traction and traction and, man, it's gone absolutely freaking berserk.
- 33:34Tyce: Mm-hmm.
- 33:35Tim Brown: And,
- 33:35Tyce: if you are, so
- 33:36Tim Brown: every day about people thanking me for, you know, certain things or, or the, the bad messages of people telling me that I shoot too low of birds and just it's...
- 33:47Tim Brown: You gotta take the good with the
- 33:48Tyce: Ja
- 33:48Tim Brown: and the good far outweighs the bad, right?
- 33:50Tim Brown: So
- 33:51Tyce: Oh, for sure.
- 33:52Tim Brown: anywhere, right?
- 33:54Tyce: Unfortunately, sometimes we focus on the bad.
- 33:56Tyce: Uh, it just naturally we've hit that.
- 33:58Tyce: We're like,"Dude, why do you have to say that comment?" Or...
- 34:01Tyce: But I think it's just part of putting yourself out there.
- 34:04Tyce: People are gonna...
- 34:05Tyce: People are comfortable.
- 34:06Tyce: They're gonna make comments, and it's just...
- 34:08Tyce: And I don't know why peop- it's not, it's not my style.
- 34:10Tyce: Like, I'm like,"Dude, this guy's just trying to do his best, you know, with life and everything.
- 34:14Tyce: Why do we, why do we gotta knock him down?
- 34:16Tyce: And no one's perfect, you know?"
- 34:18Tim Brown: and my style of hunting is not the same style as somebody else.
- 34:23Tim Brown: And I don't care how you hunt, as long as
- 34:26Tyce: Mm-hmm.
- 34:29Tyce: Yeah, it's your-- Yeah
- 34:29Tim Brown: like, like me, my dogs will hold until flush usually, and that's we like to do because we're hunting mostly wild birds.
- 34:38Tim Brown: And if you get a cripple, you're...
- 34:40Tim Brown: a son of a bitch to find it.
- 34:42Tyce: Mhm, ja
- 34:43Tim Brown: like max on them the whole time that they come, or, you know, that they're up in the air and coming down.
- 34:48Tyce: Yeah.
- 34:49Tim Brown: have any worry about anybody that hunts with me about shooting something too low.
- 34:53Tyce: Yeah, yeah, yeah
- 34:54Tim Brown: The bad thing is when you have a GoPro, which I got mine right here, when you have your GoPro and
- 35:00Tyce: Mm-hmm.
- 35:00Tim Brown: hat, that camera has to be pointed down
- 35:04Tyce: Down
- 35:05Tim Brown: to get the right angle so you can see the bird and your gun and everything.
- 35:09Tyce: It's gonna make everything look low
- 35:11Tim Brown: yeah, it does, dude.
- 35:13Tim Brown: And, and you can see my gun going like that.
- 35:15Tim Brown: And, you know, the camera's poin- But people just can't, can't figure it out, and it's like, I don't really care.
- 35:22Tyce: Sure.
- 35:22Tim Brown: know?
- 35:22Tim Brown: It's not affecting me.
- 35:24Tim Brown: Like, I'm never gonna have...
- 35:25Tim Brown: My dog's never gonna be in jeopardy,
- 35:27Tyce: Yeah.
- 35:28Tim Brown: you know.
- 35:28Tyce: Yeah
- 35:29Tim Brown: come on, people, use a little common sense and know
- 35:32Tyce: Yeah.
- 35:32Tim Brown: Like, you can see the whole barrel of my gun.
- 35:35Tyce: Yeah.
- 35:36Tim Brown: know, the camera's pointed down, and you see the whole rib.
- 35:39Tyce: Yeah
- 35:39Tim Brown: the whole view of what I'm looking down the
- 35:41Tyce: Yeah.
- 35:42Tim Brown: So
- 35:43Tyce: film it from your belly button, dude.
- 35:45Tim Brown: it's just, yeah.
- 35:46Tim Brown: It just, whatever.
- 35:48Tim Brown: it's just, you know, it's just the way it is.
- 35:50Tim Brown: But the good far outweighs the bad,
- 35:52Tyce: For sure.
- 35:53Tim Brown: Yeah.
- 35:54Tyce: So tell me about men...
- 35:55Tim Brown: started.
- 35:56Tim Brown: And,
- 35:56Tyce: T-
- 35:57Tim Brown: the mental health thing is what I was gonna get
- 35:59Tyce: Yeah.
- 35:59Tyce: Tell me about that.
- 36:00Tyce: What-- I mean, that's obviously something that's important to you, and I, I don't really know much ab-about that.
- 36:05Tyce: Tell me...
- 36:06Tyce: I can tell that's a big part of your life or something you want, you
- 36:10Tim Brown: Yes.
- 36:11Tim Brown: So
- 36:11Tyce: talk
- 36:12Tim Brown: was a really rough year for me just in general.
- 36:15Tyce: Okay
- 36:16Tim Brown: going through just all kinds of BS and, you know, you're, you're dealing with a, a parent that had passed away, and I was really close with my mom, and just dealing with all that.
- 36:26Tim Brown: And I couldn't take it anymore, I was gonna, I was gonna end it, dude.
- 36:33Tim Brown: I was gonna, I was gonna kill myself.
- 36:34Tim Brown: Well, gonna take a bunch of pills, down on the couch, I had the bottle open, and I went to put them in my mouth, and Gus came over, knocked everything out of my hand, and just sat there, like right on my face the whole time.
- 36:51Tim Brown: Just
- 36:52Tyce: Mm-hmm.
- 36:52Tim Brown: there.
- 36:52Tim Brown: Would not leave, would not move an inch.
- 36:57Tim Brown: I sat there for, I don't know, eight, nine hours, and then that was it.
- 37:02Tim Brown: I was like,"Nope.
- 37:03Tim Brown: We're gonna make something to help everybody out," and just like,"This is my renew." You know what I mean?
- 37:11Tim Brown: This
- 37:11Tyce: Mm-hmm.
- 37:12Tim Brown: s- we're starting over.
- 37:14Tim Brown: Everything's starting over.
- 37:16Tim Brown: And then that's what it's done, and then slowly snowballed into what we're doing now, and it's just,
- 37:22Tyce: Hmm.
- 37:22Tim Brown: I can help people and, and try to help them out, you know?
- 37:26Tyce: What do you do?
- 37:27Tyce: Uh, thanks for sharing that story.
- 37:29Tyce: That's super...
- 37:30Tyce: That's personal, man.
- 37:31Tyce: I had, I had two uncles on both sides of my family commit suicide, and I've seen-- And I was a young kid, and I remember seeing that ripple effect through our family, through their kids, you know.
- 37:42Tyce: So I'm glad, obviously, you're here.
- 37:44Tyce: I'm just getting to know you, but you're-- I mean, you're, you're a blessing, I'm sure, to lots of people's lives and can, you know, relate.
- 37:51Tyce: A lot of peop- I mean, we all on the outside look like we're fine, right?
- 37:54Tyce: But most of us have mental issues you know, so,
- 37:57Tim Brown: Everybody's got demons of some sort.
- 37:59Tim Brown: I
- 38:00Tyce: yeah
- 38:00Tim Brown: And, and I don't care what anybody says, everybody's got them.
- 38:03Tim Brown: You've got
- 38:04Tyce: Sure.
- 38:04Tim Brown: something, and if there isn't somebody like, like us that are willing to put themselves out and say,"Hey, I'm going through shit too,
- 38:14Tyce: Hmm
- 38:14Tim Brown: just know that I-- you can come anytime." I'll take a message that if somebody says something and they're struggling, that- that's the message that I'm going to answer.
- 38:26Tim Brown: know, I, and I check all my DMs a- as much as I can, but it's like, I don't wanna miss that one guy.
- 38:32Tim Brown: You know what
- 38:33Tyce: Ja.
- 38:33Tim Brown: Or that one girl that's going through the worst thing in their life and, and you know, I experience with it, so I know a little bit about, how I made it through, and it was, it legitimately was a dog.
- 38:46Tyce: Yeah.
- 38:47Tyce: Amazing
- 38:47Tim Brown: and, and just relying on that dog and, you know, and then it just...
- 38:52Tim Brown: You know, we just started building stuff and, and now that I have the means of, of doing all of this stuff on top of it, we're just gonna keep, you know, we're just gonna keep going.
- 39:02Tim Brown: There's just no, no reason to stop, so
- 39:05Tyce: I'm sure there's, I'm sure it was divine and God working through your dog, you know, to, to stop you, you know, knowing that you could be a blessing to other people's lives.
- 39:14Tim Brown: yeah, and my mom was right there with him probably.
- 39:16Tyce: Yeah
- 39:17Tim Brown: that probably told him too,"You need to, you need to, uh, do something with this dog to make it so it won't happen." So
- 39:24Tyce: 100%.
- 39:25Tyce: I'm a firm believer that family's there to,
- 39:27Tim Brown: Dude
- 39:27Tyce: on the other side to help us, to watch over us, you know, guardian angels or whatever you wanna call them, you know
- 39:34Tim Brown: it's the craziest thing that, like, you can-- pay attention, you can see it.
- 39:38Tim Brown: You can literally see it all over if you pay attention
- 39:42Tyce: So with that mental stuff, is it more you're just helping people as people just reach out to you, or is there other things you're c- you know, other organizations you're connected with or anything like that?
- 39:51Tyce: Or, or what, how...
- 39:52Tyce: If people are struggling through things, what, I mean, what do you...
- 39:56Tyce: Is there some, what, what, uh, can you, what inc- or what advice could you give them or, yeah
- 40:03Tim Brown: Y- yeah.
- 40:03Tim Brown: So I, I just kinda help talk them through and ask them questions.
- 40:07Tim Brown: And with me being, um, a Christian, I just tell them to go talk to their pastor or
- 40:13Tyce: Pasture, yeah.
- 40:14Tim Brown: and, and start out there.
- 40:16Tim Brown: And maybe some, I mean, you might need counseling, that if you have
- 40:20Tyce: Sure
- 40:20Tim Brown: to, to pay for that, absolutely.
- 40:23Tim Brown: You know, go do that.
- 40:24Tim Brown: But the, the number one person that, that will talk to you is, is your pastor or
- 40:31Tyce: Yeah.
- 40:31Tim Brown: a lot of places in small towns, you don't have to be from whatever religion they're o-
- 40:38Tyce: Sure.
- 40:38Tyce: Yeah, yeah
- 40:39Tim Brown: if you co- if you go out to Utah, d- you know, all of, of the churches that Ben goes to, I've been welcome in with open arms, no
- 40:49Tyce: Yep.
- 40:49Tim Brown: And I, and I, you know.
- 40:51Tyce: Yeah, there'll be a space here, well, yeah
- 40:53Tim Brown: same with the Catholics around here.
- 40:55Tim Brown: It, it doesn't matter.
- 40:56Tim Brown: You, there's somebody to talk to if you want to.
- 40:59Tyce: Yeah.
- 41:00Tim Brown: to believe in religion or anything, but they're not gonna not talk to you.
- 41:05Tim Brown: They're
- 41:06Tyce: Yeah, sure.
- 41:07Tim Brown: you out, you know?
- 41:08Tyce: Yeah
- 41:09Tim Brown: And, and that's where, you know, and I just, I like to sit alone and, and, and talk to God too.
- 41:16Tim Brown: So it's
- 41:16Tyce: Mm-hmm.
- 41:17Tim Brown: to my certain spots that I go to and I just, just talk
- 41:21Tyce: A one-on-one time.
- 41:22Tyce: Yeah.
- 41:22Tyce: Yeah
- 41:23Tim Brown: to my dogs.
- 41:24Tim Brown: I talk to my dogs a lot.
- 41:25Tim Brown: Probably, questionable sometimes if people come knock on my door and I'm sitting here talking to my dog like it's a conversation.
- 41:33Tim Brown: "I thought somebody else was in here with you." but yeah, it just, yeah.
- 41:38Tim Brown: You just gotta work through it, man.
- 41:39Tim Brown: It's just,
- 41:40Tyce: Yeah.
- 41:41Tim Brown: it.
- 41:41Tim Brown: This side's better than, than the alternative of not being here, for
- 41:47Tyce: Have a good b-- yeah, one of my best friends I hunt with a lot, he's, uh, he's going through a divorce and really struggling, you know, mentally.
- 41:54Tyce: Just feels like everything's against him and, and it's hard, man.
- 41:58Tyce: I'm just like, it's, you know, you get in that spin of not being positive and I don't know, it's just like, dude, you know, just try to...
- 42:04Tyce: You know, you got-- I'm, I'm like,"You gotta be grateful.
- 42:06Tyce: Go out and serve some people." I'm like,"When you get outside and go help someone, it just naturally, like, makes your life better." You know?
- 42:13Tyce: I'm like,"Go, go walk down your street.
- 42:15Tyce: If you see your neighbor's lawn's grown, you know, grown up, go frigging mow his lawn or just don't sit there and sulk and..." Not, not sulk, but that does-- it's just hard when you're by yourself, right, sometimes and,
- 42:26Tim Brown: Don't
- 42:26Tyce: like I say, go to church.
- 42:27Tyce: Yeah, that, yeah, I don't know.
- 42:29Tyce: But
- 42:30Tim Brown: get in that mental rut and it just, you just sit there and you constantly think of the negative.
- 42:37Tim Brown: Like, you just go- if you go outside, it, it helps.
- 42:41Tim Brown: Like, just even just going outside.
- 42:43Tim Brown: You don't even have to do anything, but just go outside and just sit and listen and breathe it all in, and it, it helps immensely.
- 42:51Tim Brown: S- meditation helps a
- 42:53Tyce: for sure.
- 42:54Tyce: Well, the beautiful thing about a dog, you gotta go walk your...
- 42:57Tyce: You gotta go get...
- 42:58Tyce: Your dog may force you to get outside.
- 43:00Tyce: You're like,"Oh, let's go get some energy out." So they can be
- 43:02Tim Brown: know,
- 43:03Tyce: life-saving in that way.
- 43:05Tim Brown: yeah, and Ben and I talk about it a lot.
- 43:07Tim Brown: Like, you, you put in what you get...
- 43:10Tim Brown: Or you get out what you put in.
- 43:12Tyce: Sure
- 43:14Tim Brown: we don't go and do, you know, the giveaways and stuff like that for any recognition or anything.
- 43:19Tim Brown: It's like,
- 43:20Tyce: Mm-hmm.
- 43:21Tim Brown: gonna help people, I
- 43:24Tyce: It feels good.
- 43:25Tim Brown: for certain things.
- 43:26Tim Brown: And it's
- 43:26Tyce: Yeah.
- 43:27Tim Brown: know, it feels good, and, and God's gonna reward you that way, right?
- 43:31Tim Brown: So it's like
- 43:32Tyce: ja.
- 43:33Tim Brown: get a reward in, in, or at least be at peace that you are doing something positive in the world.
- 43:41Tim Brown: just too much negative, man
- 43:43Tyce: How's Ben stay so positive all the time?
- 43:46Tim Brown: His wife, she's an absolute saint
- 43:50Tyce: He's, uh, he's such a good guy.
- 43:51Tyce: I mean, I've, I've helped him train his dog.
- 43:53Tyce: He's just, like, so positive and, like, just up.
- 43:56Tyce: I'm like,"Dude, you-" I never have, no
- 44:00Tim Brown: Oh my gosh.
- 44:00Tim Brown: His dad's unbelievably positive, his mom's crazy positive, his brothers are
- 44:06Tyce: Just in the genetics or something, huh?
- 44:09Tim Brown: Just, they are just extremely happy
- 44:11Tyce: Yeah,
- 44:12Tim Brown: but they don't look for much.
- 44:13Tim Brown: You know what I
- 44:14Tyce: yeah
- 44:15Tim Brown: Just regular people
- 44:17Tyce: Yeah.
- 44:18Tyce: No, he's a...
- 44:19Tim Brown: that wanna help people.
- 44:20Tyce: Mm-hmm.
- 44:21Tyce: No, 100...
- 44:22Tim Brown: dude
- 44:23Tyce: Yeah, he's a great guy.
- 44:24Tyce: Yeah, if you guys are...
- 44:25Tim Brown: all the time about
- 44:27Tyce: Yeah.
- 44:27Tim Brown: I said,"She's really the one.
- 44:29Tim Brown: She's
- 44:29Tyce: I'm
- 44:29Tim Brown: one that's the saint.
- 44:30Tim Brown: You're, you're not anything compared to her."
- 44:33Tyce: I'm trying to think if I've even actually met his wife, to be honest.
- 44:34Tyce: I mean, we've--'Cause usually he's dropping dogs off for training, picking them up, and I'm trying to think if I've...
- 44:41Tyce: I'm sure I have, like when I board their dogs sometimes and-- But, um, he-- I don't know
- 44:47Tim Brown: She's usually the one that's wrangling the, the munchkins.
- 44:50Tyce: Yeah.
- 44:51Tim Brown: that's in charge of the girls
- 44:52Tyce: We, uh, back in the day, I mean, years ago, I've been training now for about 20 years for a living, but he, um, we, we actually worked at a car dealership.
- 45:01Tyce: I don't know if he told you that.
- 45:03Tyce: But y- yeah, we worked at a car dealership together, and I sold cars, and he was, uh, he did the detailing on the vehicles, and they'd come in, and that's how we actually first met, um, before he kinda got into all the dog stuff.
- 45:15Tyce: And, and, uh, so it's kinda funny when, you know, we knew through that, and we're kinda friends working there at that company, and then, then he's into dogs, and I, you know, and then it just kinda came back around.
- 45:26Tyce: And so, yeah, so he's a good, he's a good guy.
- 45:29Tyce: But yeah, we're talking about Ben Proctor, folks, BPro Kennels.
- 45:32Tyce: If you're looking for a phenomenal kennel, um, check him out.
- 45:36Tyce: Tim, obviously, ha- you have his, his-- you run his dog kennels or, yeah, yeah.
- 45:41Tyce: Any
- 45:42Tim Brown: hole, and it is, it's, it's bulletproof almost.
- 45:45Tim Brown: It, it is,
- 45:47Tyce: Yeah.
- 45:47Tim Brown: it's a race car.
- 45:48Tim Brown: I mean, it really is.
- 45:49Tim Brown: You, you, if that comes out of your, your box of your pickup, your dogs are gonna be fine.
- 45:54Tim Brown: It's got a full-on roll cage in it.
- 45:56Tyce: Yeah, yeah
- 45:57Tim Brown: they're extremely safe in that dog kennel.
- 45:59Tim Brown: I
- 46:00Tyce: Funny s-
- 46:00Tim Brown: a helicopter on it.
- 46:03Tyce: funny story.
- 46:04Tyce: He's like, some guys had, uh...
- 46:06Tyce: He built this custom crate for these guys, and it was kind of a weird shape.
- 46:10Tyce: It was kinda rolled out, and it was on the side, and it had just two holes, and the guys were just throwing like, like hounds.
- 46:15Tyce: He was just throwing a bunch of dogs in'em.
- 46:17Tyce: And he, he's like, he calls me and he's like,"Tice, do you, like, do you want this crate?" I'm like,"Well, it doesn't really fit my trucks.""Me, me neither." And the guys had brought it back and had him make a different one that kind of...
- 46:27Tyce: And he tried to talk him into originally like,"Hey, this, I don't know if this is what you want,"
- 46:31Tim Brown: Ja
- 46:32Tyce: but he built it.
- 46:33Tyce: It's like two, it's two holes, but it's just giant space.
- 46:37Tyce: And, uh, and he's...
- 46:39Tyce: I'm like,"Dude, you can just put it in front of my barn and people drop dogs off, and we can just throw'em in, throw it in there, you know, or whatever." So I go over to his, his work to, like, get off, and he, like, lifts it off the trailer, like one end.
- 46:49Tyce: It's, it's built really well.
- 46:51Tyce: And he drops it from, like, three feet or something.
- 46:53Tyce: I'm like,"Whoa!" Like, thinking it is like,"Oh, this thing's bulletproof," and it didn't do anything to it, you know.
- 46:58Tyce: So yeah, they're, they're good, they're awesome,
- 47:02Tim Brown: Yeah,
- 47:02Tyce: crates, so.
- 47:03Tim Brown: too.
- 47:04Tim Brown: I mean, it, my dogs, it- the only time that I'm ever worried about my dogs in those is in the summer when it's hot.
- 47:10Tyce: Yeah.
- 47:11Tyce: Yeah.
- 47:12Tim Brown: a s- confined space with a dog that's panting.
- 47:14Tim Brown: You know how it is.
- 47:15Tim Brown: It's
- 47:15Tyce: Yeah.
- 47:16Tim Brown: So
- 47:17Tyce: Yeah
- 47:17Tim Brown: know, the fans come in, come in handy and, and that.
- 47:20Tim Brown: But he's got the, the sensor,
- 47:22Tyce: Do you run that sensor in, Nirish?
- 47:25Tyce: Yeah.
- 47:25Tim Brown: yep,
- 47:25Tyce: Yeah.
- 47:26Tim Brown: holes'll have it in there.
- 47:27Tim Brown: And it, it gives you a peace of mind anyway, right?
- 47:31Tyce: Let you know what's going on.
- 47:32Tim Brown: Dakota, it's kinda cold up there too, so it's like,"Okay, let me just check it."'Cause I don't run straw or hay or anything in
- 47:39Tyce: Mm-hmm.
- 47:40Tim Brown: just too much of a mess.
- 47:41Tyce: Mm-hmm.
- 47:42Tim Brown: have, I usually have them a blanket that they, one of their...
- 47:45Tim Brown: They have blankets all over and a dog bed, and,
- 47:48Tyce: Let's throw that in there
- 47:48Tim Brown: what they have.
- 47:49Tim Brown: And I just throw that in there, and then I have extra ones that, like, if it's wet out, I pull them out and let them dry off and put
- 47:55Tyce: Sure.
- 47:55Tim Brown: in.
- 47:56Tim Brown: But,
- 47:56Tyce: Yeah, makes sense
- 47:58Tim Brown: And the, the temperature fluctuation is not anything that's crazy on it.
- 48:03Tim Brown: Like, they're, they're at 55 degrees in there or 60 degrees in the winter when it's cold out.
- 48:09Tim Brown: It's like, they're fine.
- 48:10Tim Brown: They're perfectly fine
- 48:12Tyce: Oh, yeah.
- 48:13Tyce: No, they're...
- 48:14Tyce: That's a small...
- 48:15Tyce: Yeah, and so you're coming back, you're coming out here for, um, Beyond the Point, uh, that giveaway, right, that we talked about off- Yeah.
- 48:23Tyce: Do you wanna, do you wanna talk about that where people can come out and meet you and all that stuff?
- 48:28Tim Brown: So we're doing, uh, if, if every- anybody knew about it, it was, uh, the Beyond the Point giveaway.
- 48:33Tim Brown: It was with myself, Mygra, Franky, uh, Chief Upland, Gunner Kennels, um, Williams Knife Company, Yeti, Turtlebox, uh, OnX.
- 48:45Tim Brown: It's just cra- there were just a whole bunch.
- 48:48Tim Brown: Uh, Deck Systems, that was the other one.
- 48:50Tim Brown: uh, we're doing a, we did a giveaway, so everybody that, the three winners that won,
- 48:56Tyce: How did they get, how did they put in for that?
- 48:58Tyce: Was it just...
- 48:59Tim Brown: It
- 48:59Tyce: How did they...
- 49:00Tim Brown: up.
- 49:00Tim Brown: It was a
- 49:01Tyce: Okay
- 49:01Tim Brown: we had a Q- like at Pheasant Fest, we had a QR code that you could scan, and then you went right to Migra's website, put your information in, and you were on the list.
- 49:10Tim Brown: So everybody, those three guys won a Franky Instinct, LX Overunder shotgun, a
- 49:17Tyce: Dang
- 49:18Tim Brown: for their truck, a Gunner, Gunner kennel, a year membership to OnX, bunch of Yeti stuff, uh, a Turtlebox, um, knife, knives from Williams Knife Company, Retriever Fuel for their dog, a case of Migra ammunition.
- 49:33Tim Brown: So, like, you're talking 15
- 49:35Tyce: lot, yeah.
- 49:36Tim Brown: Plus, oh, by the way, plus you get to
- 49:38Tyce: Or taking out a hunt.
- 49:39Tim Brown: in some of the most amazing places that you could ever imagine.
- 49:43Tyce: Yeah
- 49:44Tim Brown: so we're doing the first one's in Utah, and then the second one's in Wyoming for sage grouse, and then the third one's in South Dakota for pheasants and, uh, which the guy wants to...
- 49:56Tim Brown: The guy that won that one wants to hunt grouse, and I was extremely happy with that
- 50:00Tyce: Mm-hmm.
- 50:01Tim Brown: I can shoot them, I can shoot all the pheasants I want here.
- 50:03Tim Brown: I don't want to shoot any pheasants while I'm
- 50:05Tyce: Yeah.
- 50:06Tyce: Do something different.
- 50:07Tim Brown: prairie chickens.
- 50:08Tyce: Yeah.
- 50:08Tyce: Yeah
- 50:09Tim Brown: favorite thing.
- 50:09Tim Brown: That's my favorite bird to hunt is prairie chickens, and it's not even, it's not even remotely close.
- 50:14Tyce: Hmm.
- 50:15Tim Brown: um, we decided to do this, and we're gonna film it and make a little YouTube series out of it, and, uh, show all of the other stuff that, you know, beyond the point, that's
- 50:25Tyce: Yeah
- 50:25Tim Brown: us sitting around talking, the stuff with just the camaraderie and, and, and all of that.
- 50:32Tim Brown: And we're bringing friends that, that we know that are in the industry can come hunt on these hunts with us, too.
- 50:37Tim Brown: So
- 50:37Tyce: Mm-hmm.
- 50:38Tim Brown: it's just gonna...
- 50:39Tim Brown: We're just building that community, right?
- 50:41Tim Brown: And to
- 50:41Tyce: Mm-hmm.
- 50:42Tim Brown: that.
- 50:42Tim Brown: And it's gonna...
- 50:43Tim Brown: Every one of these are, it's all on public ground.
- 50:45Tim Brown: So it, every one of these places we're going, everybody can enjoy it, right?
- 50:50Tyce: Ja, ja.
- 50:51Tim Brown: when people say,"Well, I don't have a spot to go," y- you do if you want to put the time and effort into
- 50:56Tyce: Sure.
- 50:56Tim Brown: it, right?
- 50:57Tyce: Is it a two or three?
- 50:58Tyce: How l- how many days is it you're taking the person out?
- 51:01Tim Brown: two-day
- 51:02Tyce: Two-day hunt.
- 51:03Tim Brown: a
- 51:03Tyce: Yeah
- 51:04Tim Brown: hunt.
- 51:04Tim Brown: Um, and that, you know, like, I was...
- 51:07Tim Brown: The one that I was worried about more than anything was Utah
- 51:10Tyce: Mm-hmm.
- 51:11Tim Brown: you know, we're hunting mountains and I didn't want, like, some 84-year-old dude from Georgia to win.
- 51:16Tyce: Yeah, yeah, sure.
- 51:18Tim Brown: We would pivot and make, make things work,
- 51:20Tyce: Sure
- 51:21Tim Brown: like, I'm like,"Oh, that's not my only worry." And then I saw the guy that won it was 79, and I'm like,"Oh, crap."
- 51:28Tyce: For Utah?
- 51:28Tim Brown: looked...
- 51:29Tim Brown: Then that, yeah.
- 51:30Tim Brown: And then I looked at his Instagram and he's in Washington State and he's climbing mountains, and I'm like,"I'm gonna be the one that's dragging ass instead of him," you know?
- 51:38Tim Brown: So I'm like,"Well, he's fine." And then the other two guys were younger guys that, that were...
- 51:43Tim Brown: I mean, they're really jacked about it.
- 51:44Tim Brown: So all in all, it went really well, so I'm pretty pleased with it.
- 51:49Tim Brown: It's gonna be a lot of fun.
- 51:51Tyce: So before and after that, are you doing something?
- 51:53Tyce: Yeah, tell us.
- 51:53Tyce: Yeah
- 51:54Tim Brown: Yeah, so when we come out to Utah on the 16th of September, uh, we're gonna be at the, uh, Spanish Fork Gun Range,
- 52:02Tyce: Mm-hmm.
- 52:03Tim Brown: um, or Gun Club or whatever you wanna call
- 52:05Tyce: Yeah
- 52:06Tim Brown: And, uh, I'm gonna put some stuff out about this too on social media and whatnot.
- 52:12Tim Brown: it's gonna be a sporting clays.
- 52:14Tim Brown: So the first 40 people that sign up, if you go to my website, thebeardeduplandercompany.com, there's a, a thing that you can click get in on the f- so if you're one of the first 40 people to get in on it, you get a free round of sporting clays um, the ammo for the round.
- 52:32Tyce: Nice
- 52:33Tim Brown: we're gonna have a little competition.
- 52:35Tim Brown: Um, the guys that are coming up from Migra and myself and Ben are gonna go early and do our round first, then this is what you guys gotta beat.
- 52:43Tim Brown: You know, just
- 52:44Tyce: Mm-hmm.
- 52:45Tim Brown: it fun, right?
- 52:46Tyce: Sure
- 52:46Tim Brown: gonna be a food truck there.
- 52:48Tim Brown: Uh, it's gonna be just...
- 52:50Tim Brown: And then the five stand will still be open, so if you're not the first 40 people, you can still come and all you gotta do, I believe, is pay for your clay pigeons.
- 52:59Tim Brown: You know, bring your own ammunition, pay for your clay pigeons,
- 53:02Tyce: Mm-hmm.
- 53:03Tim Brown: the place is...
- 53:04Tim Brown: We have the whole place rented out.
- 53:05Tim Brown: So,
- 53:06Tyce: Oh, fun
- 53:06Tim Brown: we did it, we did it over the 4th of July when we were there and had about 40 people come and it was just a of our pants kinda thing.
- 53:14Tim Brown: We're like,"We'll see if anybody's got any interest," and
- 53:17Tyce: Nice.
- 53:17Tim Brown: it was really good, so we're like,"Let's up it a little
- 53:20Tyce: Mm-hmm.
- 53:21Tim Brown: we're gonna be out there anyway, so
- 53:23Tyce: Sure
- 53:24Tim Brown: let's have fun and do it a little bit bigger." So, um,
- 53:27Tyce: your hunts or after your two hunt?
- 53:29Tyce: After the two-day hunt.
- 53:30Tyce: What's the date on it?
- 53:32Tim Brown: Uh, the 16th of September.
- 53:34Tyce: What day?
- 53:35Tyce: Is that a Saturday or what is...
- 53:36Tim Brown: No, it's a Wednesday.
- 53:38Tyce: Okay
- 53:38Tim Brown: Wednesday.
- 53:39Tim Brown: Wednesday night from 6:00 to 10:00, I think we have the place.
- 53:43Tyce: I have to make sure I put that in my, put that in my schedule to try to come out too.
- 53:47Tyce: That'd be cool
- 53:48Tim Brown: on the 12th we're gonna be at the Scheels in, uh, Salt...
- 53:51Tim Brown: What, what is that?
- 53:53Tim Brown: the Scheels at out there?
- 53:54Tyce: Shills in Sandy.
- 53:56Tyce: Sandy, I believe.
- 53:57Tim Brown: that's
- 53:57Tyce: Yeah.
- 53:58Tim Brown: yep, yep.
- 53:59Tyce: Yeah
- 53:59Tim Brown: you, if anybody's, uh, around on that Saturday, come, come by the Scheels store, and I do
- 54:06Tyce: W- what are you doing there?
- 54:07Tim Brown: I'm there with Mike and Frankie.
- 54:09Tyce: Oh, okay
- 54:10Tim Brown: we're just doing a, a meet and greet thing, kind of thing, and just helping them,
- 54:16Tyce: Do you know where that is?
- 54:17Tyce: Uh, in the, in Chill's by like the shotgun, the, the gun area?
- 54:21Tim Brown: gun, gun area.
- 54:22Tim Brown: Yep,
- 54:23Tyce: Oh, okay
- 54:24Tim Brown: So yeah, so if anybody's bored on that, that Fri- what is it?
- 54:28Tim Brown: Saturday.
- 54:28Tim Brown: I think it's the 12th, whatever that
- 54:31Tyce: So is your hunt Monday, Tuesday then, and then you'll have that event Wednesday-- or Saturday and Wednesday
- 54:38Tim Brown: Yeah,'cause it's, uh, t-t-t-t-t-t, let me look here.
- 54:42Tim Brown: It's, yeah, the 12th is on a Saturday.
- 54:43Tim Brown: We'll be at Scheels all day, and then our hunt is the 13th and 14th.
- 54:49Tim Brown: Yep.
- 54:50Tyce: And the 16th at, you said 6:00 PM?
- 54:52Tim Brown: is there, yep, 6:00 PM at, uh, the Spanish Fork, um, Gun Club.
- 54:59Tim Brown: And then after that we turn and burn and we go to Wyoming that next week'cause it opens, sage grouse opens on the 19th.
- 55:06Tyce: So are you going, are you on these, are these going back to back pretty much or?
- 55:10Tim Brown: These two are.
- 55:11Tyce: Oh, okay
- 55:12Tim Brown: and then, and then my buddies from Migra, um, Mark and, and, uh, Q-Tip go up to Canada'cause they're, I mean, they're waterfowl guys.
- 55:21Tyce: Ja,
- 55:22Tim Brown: they're
- 55:22Tyce: ja
- 55:22Tim Brown: waterfowl guys.
- 55:23Tim Brown: So they'll go up there uh, hunt up there, and then, um, they're gonna come back down and meet me in Sioux Falls, South Dakota for the South Dakota hunt,
- 55:32Tyce: Oh, cool.
- 55:33Tyce: Cool
- 55:33Tim Brown: two-day event at Shields that, that, uh, weekend.
- 55:37Tim Brown: So
- 55:38Tyce: So Migra, we were talking about what are you shooting, what do you like to shoot?
- 55:41Tyce: Uh, kind of where we're talking about Migra, what do you like to shoot that they use for upland?
- 55:46Tim Brown: So for, uh, if, if you can shoot the lead, um, early season pheasants and grouse I'll shoot the 6.8
- 55:53Tyce: Okay.
- 55:53Tim Brown: that they have.
- 55:55Tim Brown: And, uh, if you have to shoot steel, the 4.6s are just as good.
- 55:59Tim Brown: 4.6 steel is, it, it works really well for
- 56:02Tyce: That's awesome.
- 56:04Tyce: Hmm
- 56:04Tim Brown: then, uh, later in the season when the birds get really tough, for like the sage grouse, I'm gonna use the 4.6s, uh, the 4.6 stack loads
- 56:13Tyce: It's a little bigger BB.
- 56:15Tim Brown: Need a little bit bigger BB, uh, just it's got a little more knockdown to it
- 56:19Tyce: Is it lead or is it something else?
- 56:21Tim Brown: it's
- 56:21Tyce: Oh, it's all lead.
- 56:22Tyce: Okay
- 56:23Tim Brown: Yeah, the, the bismuth tungsten market is, is so screwed that there's no, there's no bismuth or tungsten available.
- 56:33Tyce: Mm.
- 56:33Tim Brown: so it's, it's, it's steel or, uh, if they do have bismuth, it's leftover from last year.
- 56:40Tyce: Is bus- business coming out of China or where's that coming out?
- 56:43Tyce: Does it come out of-- Where is it?
- 56:44Tyce: Yeah.
- 56:45Tim Brown: control pretty much all of it.
- 56:47Tyce: Hmm.
- 56:48Tim Brown: Yep,
- 56:48Tyce: Yeah, I think I'd heard that, but I didn't know the details of, of that.
- 56:51Tim Brown: you know, there's, there's other things that everybody's working on to, to get, um, out there, like some copper stuff and stuff like that, which is, is gonna probably be the new wave of the future.
- 57:03Tim Brown: It's probably how it's gonna go.
- 57:05Tyce: Hmm.
- 57:05Tim Brown: your TSS stuff is, if they don't have it already, their, you know, turkey loads next year it's gonna be different
- 57:12Tyce: Just with the birds of prey and the, all that stuff going on.
- 57:15Tyce: Is that why, is that where you- the copper
- 57:17Tim Brown: get it.
- 57:18Tim Brown: They just can't...
- 57:18Tim Brown: Yeah, the copper, it's gotta be non-tox,
- 57:20Tyce: Yeah, non-toxic.
- 57:21Tyce: Yeah.
- 57:22Tim Brown: a waterfowl production area in, in pretty much any state you have to
- 57:26Tyce: Shoot copper.
- 57:27Tyce: Yeah.
- 57:28Tyce: Yeah.
- 57:28Tim Brown: copper.
- 57:29Tim Brown: And, and if it's
- 57:29Tyce: Or steel
- 57:30Tim Brown: know, like, like Boss had to get it approved to, to make sure it worked right.
- 57:34Tim Brown: And,
- 57:34Tyce: Yeah.
- 57:36Tim Brown: yeah, it just, there's so many loop- or so many hoops and, you know, everything you gotta go through to get stuff approved anymore with Congress that
- 57:44Tyce: Yeah.
- 57:45Tim Brown: But I mean,
- 57:46Tyce: and all that.
- 57:47Tyce: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
- 57:49Tim Brown: it also isn't near, you know, when they had the lead ban, because they were shooting pounds of ammunition into the water, not,
- 57:58Tyce: Sure.
- 57:59Tim Brown: a few shotgun shells.
- 58:00Tim Brown: They were shooting, like legitimately a punt gun had like three quarters of a pound of lead ammo in it.
- 58:05Tim Brown: Like,
- 58:05Tyce: Yeah.
- 58:06Tim Brown: you shoot into a few flocks of ducks with that, you're probably gonna
- 58:10Tyce: Yeah.
- 58:11Tim Brown: on the bottom of the water
- 58:12Tyce: Yeah.
- 58:14Tyce: Yeah, it's an interesting...
- 58:15Tyce: That's a whole nother thing to ta- Well, and shotgun shells have gone up in price a lot, even lead have do- I mean, everything else.
- 58:22Tyce: Everything's doubled, right?
- 58:23Tyce: Pretty much so.
- 58:24Tim Brown: Yeah.
- 58:25Tyce: But
- 58:26Tim Brown: uh, I had a, a box of Fiocchi Golden Pheasant that I bought, I don't even know when it was.
- 58:31Tim Brown: It had to be early 2000, 2008, 2009, something like that.
- 58:36Tim Brown: I had just the box,
- 58:37Tyce: Mm-hmm.
- 58:38Tim Brown: it was, like, 6.99 for the box,
- 58:41Tyce: Wow
- 58:42Tim Brown: 20- now they're, like, 27.99
- 58:44Tyce: No, I, I know.
- 58:46Tim Brown: just...
- 58:46Tyce: You gotta pick, I guess you gotta pick your shots better now.
- 58:50Tim Brown: Mm, yeah.
- 58:51Tim Brown: That's no kidding.
- 58:52Tim Brown: That's no kidding.
- 58:53Tim Brown: But even, you know, even like the Migra, it's 22-ish dollars a box or 17.99 if you can find it some places.
- 59:00Tim Brown: So
- 59:00Tyce: Yeah, that's not bad.
- 59:01Tyce: Yeah
- 59:01Tim Brown: out of the, the realm of what everything needs to be.
- 59:05Tyce: Call me cheap.
- 59:06Tyce: I, when I start pushing 25 plus 30, I'm like,"Ooh, it's starting to get up." 20-ish is, uh, I can chew that a little easier
- 59:13Tim Brown: Yep.
- 59:14Tim Brown: Yeah, and like the
- 59:15Tyce: That's just me personally, but
- 59:17Tim Brown: I 100% agree.
- 59:18Tim Brown: Like I had a hard time spending$35 for, uh, five rounds of, of turkey ammo.
- 59:25Tim Brown: Like, and then I got to thinking, I'm like,"Okay, I'm gonna shoot one to pattern it." I can shoot four more turkeys.
- 59:33Tyce: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 59:34Tim Brown: need to...
- 59:35Tyce: You're just not banging away usually.
- 59:36Tyce: Yeah
- 59:37Tim Brown: Yeah, and then when I take kids out, we just shoot the, the lead migrate.
- 59:41Tim Brown: I
- 59:42Tyce: Knocks him down.
- 59:42Tim Brown: into, I'm getting those turkeys into like 10 yards for
- 59:45Tyce: Oh, yeah.
- 59:47Tim Brown: you could throw a rock and probably kill the damn thing.
- 59:49Tyce: Yeah, yeah, you could, you could shoot him with low brass probably.
- 59:52Tim Brown: yeah, and, and, you know, that's the, the boys and, and girls that I take out shoot with the, the pheasant loads.
- 59:59Tim Brown: They don't kick near as bad as what a turkey load does, so you don't have to worry
- 1:00:02Tyce: Mm-hmm.
- 1:00:03Tim Brown: And then they put them down just as easy as, as the, the turkey ammo does.
- 1:00:08Tyce: Yeah.
- 1:00:08Tim Brown: them be in my lap, you know what
- 1:00:10Tyce: Yeah, for sure.
- 1:00:11Tim Brown: right in my lap, and that means that I really fooled them.
- 1:00:14Tyce: Yeah
- 1:00:15Tim Brown: a decoy or whatnot, I, I still fooled that bird to get that close.
- 1:00:18Tyce: Yeah.
- 1:00:19Tyce: Are you a 20 gauge guy, a 12 gauge guy?
- 1:00:21Tyce: What, what are you, what are you?
- 1:00:23Tyce: 20 gauge?
- 1:00:24Tyce: Oh, I'm a 20 gauge, yeah.
- 1:00:26Tyce: Oh, once you start shooting 20 gauges, it's hard to go back.
- 1:00:29Tyce: I mean, I'll shoot a 12 for waterfowl, but yeah
- 1:00:32Tim Brown: don't, uh, you know, it, it all boiled down...
- 1:00:35Tim Brown: I had a, a Beretta 686 Onyx, um, over/under for the longest time.
- 1:00:41Tim Brown: I had it for probably 20 years about.
- 1:00:43Tim Brown: And, uh, I made the huge mistake of we were on the edge, we were on a, in a driveway that was right on a highway, I set my gun up on top of the co- the dog
- 1:00:54Tyce: No, man.
- 1:00:56Tim Brown: And I was worried about my dogs, get my dogs loaded up, and we st- my buddies and I started talking.
- 1:01:01Tim Brown: Didn't even
- 1:01:02Tyce: Drove off
- 1:01:03Tim Brown: head.
- 1:01:04Tim Brown: off, it fell off, and somebody picked it up,'cause it was probably in the middle of the highway.
- 1:01:09Tyce: Oh, man.
- 1:01:10Tim Brown: up and nobody turned it in.
- 1:01:11Tim Brown: It's gone.
- 1:01:12Tim Brown: And it's like,
- 1:01:13Tyce: Oh, d-
- 1:01:14Tim Brown: The sto- the stories that that, the stories that that gun could tell, and I'm li- I just, just pains me to know.
- 1:01:21Tim Brown: You know, I take a lot of crap for it, and not deservingly I should, because that is a terrible mistake.
- 1:01:27Tim Brown: But it's like, damn,
- 1:01:29Tyce: Maybe at some point, if you keep telling that story, maybe someone will be like,"Dude, I picked up that guy's gun.
- 1:01:33Tyce: Turn it in."
- 1:01:34Tim Brown: n- no kidding.
- 1:01:35Tim Brown: Yeah.
- 1:01:35Tim Brown: Yeah, if you're in northwest Iowa and you picked up a Beretta, that was mine.
- 1:01:39Tim Brown: If
- 1:01:39Tyce: That was it.
- 1:01:40Tyce: Yeah, that was
- 1:01:41Tim Brown: If you turn it back in to me, I'll make it worth your while, let's just say that.
- 1:01:44Tyce: Tim's.
- 1:01:45Tyce: Oh, seeing you start all your podcasts with that.
- 1:01:48Tim Brown: Yeah, right?
- 1:01:49Tim Brown: the, you know, and then, uh, and then I was So I went out and bought a SBE-3 because, you know, that's a pretty good turkey hunting gun, 20 gauge.
- 1:01:56Tyce: Mm-hmm.
- 1:01:57Tim Brown: I'm like,"It'll work if I need a backup gun for pheasants and, and upland stuff." So I was like,"I'll just get one of those." And then Francke come on board and they're like,"Well, why don't you shoot one of these?" And I'm like,"All right, I guess I'll get one of those."
- 1:02:11Tyce: Mm-hmm.
- 1:02:12Tim Brown: it'll be an Instinct, um, side plate that I'll be shooting all this season.
- 1:02:16Tyce: Okay, cool.
- 1:02:17Tim Brown: Yeah.
- 1:02:18Tim Brown: But the weight is the key for me.
- 1:02:20Tim Brown: That was why I went to a 20 gauge
- 1:02:22Tyce: Yeah
- 1:02:23Tim Brown: weight.
- 1:02:24Tim Brown: I want it to be as light as possible
- 1:02:26Tyce: Hmm.
- 1:02:26Tyce: Yeah, yeah, for sure.
- 1:02:27Tim Brown: But
- 1:02:28Tyce: When we're training, when we're training too with dogs and shooting, you know, you shoot them with a 12...
- 1:02:32Tyce: I mean, you can change your pattern, but if they c- you know, these pen-raised birds, if you shoot them close, 12 gauges blow them up, you know?
- 1:02:39Tyce: And the 20s just don't, you don't get that
- 1:02:41Tim Brown: Yeah,
- 1:02:42Tyce: out of them, you know?
- 1:02:43Tim Brown: and you don't wanna use a.28'cause that's even more expensive
- 1:02:46Tyce: Yeah, then the 28
- 1:02:48Tim Brown: gauge is,.20 gauge will
- 1:02:49Tyce: gauge.
- 1:02:49Tim Brown: .20
- 1:02:49Tyce: Yeah.
- 1:02:50Tyce: Yeah, when, when they actually have the...
- 1:02:52Tyce: I think I'd switch mostly when they have the shortage of ammo, and you couldn't-- You'd go in there and you couldn't get 12 gauge.
- 1:03:00Tyce: I was like,"Well, there's freaking 20, 20 gauge here.
- 1:03:02Tyce: I'm gonna pick that up," you know?
- 1:03:04Tyce: So I picked up a 20 gauge and started shooting that.
- 1:03:06Tyce: I'm like,"Dude, this is the way to go," you know?
- 1:03:07Tyce: 'Cause I grew up with always shooting a 12 gauge, and we'd just have to wait for the birds to get out there further and, and so once I started shooting the 20, I just got hooked on it, so
- 1:03:16Tim Brown: Yeah, I started with a, uh, 1100 12-gauge, with the Remington 1100 12-gauge with a fixed choke, modified choke, and that thing is a tank.
- 1:03:27Tim Brown: I mean, it weighs so m- I bet it's like...
- 1:03:29Tim Brown: I bet it's 12, 15 pounds, right?
- 1:03:32Tyce: Wow.
- 1:03:33Tim Brown: absolute tank of a gun, and I'm like,"I don't want to carry this thing anymore."
- 1:03:37Tyce: Yeah
- 1:03:37Tim Brown: bought that, that's when I bought that Beretta, and I had it...
- 1:03:40Tim Brown: got it for a steal at Scheels, and I just have just never stopped using that gun.
- 1:03:46Tim Brown: It was such a good gun.
- 1:03:47Tyce: Hmm.
- 1:03:48Tyce: I've been shooting the little CZ, the, the, um, Sportsman's Warehouse has a little CZ that I sh- I mean, I'm laying, I'm, like, putting the guns on the ground as I'm training dogs.
- 1:03:57Tyce: I'm like,"I just need a little workhorse," you know?
- 1:04:00Tyce: And, uh, I just had some Stoegers forever just'cause they were cheap, like Condor.
- 1:04:03Tyce: I think they're the Condor.
- 1:04:05Tyce: And I s- they
- 1:04:05Tim Brown: Yep
- 1:04:06Tyce: a pretty warranty, but it, I, I think I sent that gun in, like, every two years, and they just kept sending me a new gun'cause the, the firing pins would go out.
- 1:04:14Tyce: So I tried the CE, uh, is it the Bob, the Bob White's the...
- 1:04:19Tyce: We have the side-by-side I think is the Bob White, and then I can't remember, is it the Woodcock that's the...
- 1:04:24Tyce: I can't remember the
- 1:04:25Tim Brown: or the, the,
- 1:04:27Tyce: Trying to remember now what...
- 1:04:28Tim Brown: is another one too.
- 1:04:30Tim Brown: I don't, I don't
- 1:04:30Tyce: Yeah, the Drake I think is the 12 gauge, I bel- I believe.
- 1:04:35Tim Brown: Yeah.
- 1:04:36Tim Brown: My brother's
- 1:04:40Tyce: Is that the upper end, the higher end CZ?
- 1:04:42Tim Brown: Yeah, CZ Ultra.
- 1:04:43Tim Brown: Not really.
- 1:04:44Tim Brown: I mean, it was only like 800 bucks.
- 1:04:46Tyce: Okay, yeah.
- 1:04:47Tim Brown: And
- 1:04:47Tyce: Yeah
- 1:04:48Tim Brown: got that because he wanted the light gun too, and I, I was like,'cause Jake from Chief Upland, that's his, that's what he shoots.
- 1:04:55Tyce: CZ, yeah.
- 1:04:56Tim Brown: yeah, just
- 1:04:57Tyce: been g- they have great guns, honestly.
- 1:04:59Tim Brown: gun.
- 1:05:00Tyce: Yeah.
- 1:05:01Tyce: Yeah
- 1:05:02Tim Brown: than light too, so it, it works out really well.
- 1:05:05Tyce: Well, that's what I tell people.
- 1:05:06Tyce: If you're just trying to get a, a gun that's not gonna break the bank, you go to that.
- 1:05:10Tyce: That's You can only get them at Sportsman's or I can't remember, I think it's the, the Bob White and the Woodcock, I believe.
- 1:05:17Tyce: But man, for like 700, 700 bucks or six, sometimes you can get them for like 600 bucks on sale.
- 1:05:22Tyce: We've put thousands of rounds through it, and we've had like one finally wear out.
- 1:05:26Tyce: But it's I mean, I mean, the average hunter, that thing's gonna last a long, a long time.
- 1:05:32Tyce: But
- 1:05:33Tim Brown: Yeah, you
- 1:05:33Tyce: I don't know
- 1:05:34Tim Brown: to go get a$2,300 gun or whatever.
- 1:05:37Tyce: Yeah.
- 1:05:38Tim Brown: to.
- 1:05:38Tim Brown: If you're,
- 1:05:39Tyce: Sure.
- 1:05:39Tim Brown: if i- it, it's the, it's the first world problems kind of stuff, you
- 1:05:43Tyce: Yeah.
- 1:05:44Tyce: Yeah.
- 1:05:44Tim Brown: into that range of it, you know?
- 1:05:46Tim Brown: Now, if I'm, if I'm duck hunting and I'm, and I'm hunting in some nasty, nasty stuff, I warrant getting a better quality
- 1:05:54Tyce: Yeah.
- 1:05:55Tim Brown: not, right?
- 1:05:57Tim Brown: but if I'm just, if I'm just out hunting pheasants and I can run a, I can run a, uh
- 1:06:03Tyce: Can run a eight sev-- I mean anything, right?
- 1:06:06Tim Brown: He was just sneezing his head off.
- 1:06:07Tim Brown: I had to see what he was doing.
- 1:06:09Tim Brown: Um, if I can run, you know, any gun, it'll, it'll work fine.
- 1:06:13Tim Brown: If I can run a swab down through it and clean it out,
- 1:06:16Tyce: Mm-hmm.
- 1:06:17Tim Brown: that.
- 1:06:17Tyce: Yeah.
- 1:06:19Tyce: Well, like I say, when you get up in those, it's been, and, and it's fun though when you get into upland, right?
- 1:06:23Tyce: It's, it's, I think, I mean, dog guys are gear guys, right?
- 1:06:26Tyce: Like, we like our gear, you know?
- 1:06:28Tyce: It's like, and hunters in general are pr- most of us are gear guys, you know?
- 1:06:31Tyce: You want the latest this and that, and it's, it's just the f- I mean, you work hard, so you might as well spend it on what you want.
- 1:06:37Tyce: And I mean, you get the beautiful engraved shotguns and the ultralight.
- 1:06:41Tyce: It's just the cool...
- 1:06:42Tyce: I don't know.
- 1:06:43Tyce: It's, it is fun to have fun gear, but you don't have to be rich to hunt upland game and have as just as good a time, right?
- 1:06:50Tyce: So, you know
- 1:06:51Tim Brown: Yeah, and you know, I went to the, uh, the Delta Waterfowl Show in, in Des Moines, Iowa couple weeks ago.
- 1:06:57Tim Brown: I was down- I went down there and hung out with the guys at Migra, and I thought that the upland guys were, were snobby with their gear.
- 1:07:05Tim Brown: We ain't even close.
- 1:07:07Tim Brown: waterfowl dudes are crazy with their gear.
- 1:07:12Tim Brown: Yeah, they, they like, they like to spend the money.
- 1:07:16Tim Brown: Them decoys and them
- 1:07:17Tyce: Oh yeah
- 1:07:19Tim Brown: the d- we were right across the aisle from the, uh, um, Sitka,
- 1:07:24Tyce: Sitka, Sitka Waterfowl or yeah, Sitka.
- 1:07:27Tyce: Mm-hmm.
- 1:07:28Tim Brown: they had the rain booth,
- 1:07:29Tyce: Mm-hmm
- 1:07:30Tim Brown: they had a really, really high, resolution camera, you- a really s- good slow motion camera or whatever, and you could get in there, and it was raining on you, and you'd put on the waders, and you'd
- 1:07:41Tyce: Sure.
- 1:07:42Tim Brown: the full outfit.
- 1:07:43Tim Brown: And then you'd go in there, and they'd take pictures and video and all this,
- 1:07:46Tyce: Oh, cool
- 1:07:47Tim Brown: young kids were just having a fricking ball with it.
- 1:07:49Tim Brown: And it was like, wow, that's, that's, that's some intensity there.
- 1:07:54Tim Brown: But if you think about it, you know, the waders are 1,500 bucks and the, you know, the jacket's another$600.
- 1:08:02Tim Brown: And it's like, geez.
- 1:08:03Tyce: Yeah.
- 1:08:04Tyce: I, I, you know,
- 1:08:05Tim Brown: crazy
- 1:08:07Tyce: I do have their-- I, as a plug, I do have their waders.
- 1:08:10Tyce: I am on-- I am, uh, have, you know, a connection with them.
- 1:08:14Tyce: But man, they're, they are the most comfortable wader I have personally been in.
- 1:08:18Tyce: I mean, when, like you say, when you're upland hunting or you, you want...
- 1:08:22Tyce: It does, it is nice to have good boots if you spend a lot of time on the ground or the gear can make it a little more enjoyable if you have comfortable gear that works, you know.
- 1:08:32Tyce: So
- 1:08:32Tim Brown: Yep.
- 1:08:33Tim Brown: But, I mean, but if you're bow hunting, it's just, it's either scent control or, warm camo.
- 1:08:40Tim Brown: You know what
- 1:08:40Tyce: yeah
- 1:08:41Tim Brown: that's, that's the, the two things.
- 1:08:43Tim Brown: And your bow, I mean, your bow's expensive, but it's not like there's a whole bunch of other things.
- 1:08:48Tim Brown: Like upland guys and, and waterfall guys, our dogs are...
- 1:08:52Tim Brown: You know, that's a whole nother thing.
- 1:08:53Tim Brown: You know
- 1:08:54Tyce: Yeah.
- 1:08:54Tim Brown: Like,
- 1:08:54Tyce: Mm-hmm
- 1:08:55Tim Brown: putting Garmin, we're putting Garmin collars on them, and those aren't cheap.
- 1:08:59Tim Brown: And then, you know,
- 1:09:00Tyce: If you get them professionally trained too, you don't have to, but if you do, yeah, like that adds up and...
- 1:09:05Tyce: But
- 1:09:06Tim Brown: And
- 1:09:06Tyce: I mean, really any sport can get expensive
- 1:09:09Tim Brown: Yeah, and that's the thing too, like if you don't have the time to train it and you want to send it to a trainer, you, that's your option, right?
- 1:09:15Tyce: Sure, yeah.
- 1:09:16Tyce: Yep.
- 1:09:17Tim Brown: If you want to enjoy it, you
- 1:09:19Tyce: Mm-hmm.
- 1:09:19Tim Brown: a little bit of direction.
- 1:09:21Tyce: For sure.
- 1:09:22Tim Brown: But
- 1:09:23Tyce: days we're so...
- 1:09:24Tyce: Our time is so busy, and that's partly why we're, why we're in business, right?
- 1:09:28Tyce: Is people get, they go to work, and then they get home, and then all of a sudden they got family, and they have kids' sports, and they have this.
- 1:09:34Tyce: And, but they, when they go hunting, you want a nice dog, right?
- 1:09:37Tyce: So it's like, well, you pay us, you do your job, we'll do our job, and then you go hunting in the fall and have a wonderful dog, and you can really just have a good, enjoyable experience, you know?
- 1:09:46Tyce: So yeah.
- 1:09:48Tim Brown: exactly right
- 1:09:49Tyce: Well, we better, we probably better kinda start wrapping it up here.
- 1:09:52Tyce: Tell us, tell us where people can find you, how they can get involved with you, and all that good stuff, so.
- 1:09:58Tim Brown: Yeah, just, uh, on all my socials, YouTube included, uh, it's just The Bearded Uplander.
- 1:10:04Tim Brown: You can search that and it's going to come up.
- 1:10:06Tim Brown: The website's thebeardeduplandercompany.com, but if you literally put me in Google it's gonna come up on, you know, everything.
- 1:10:14Tim Brown: So it's...
- 1:10:15Tim Brown: Um, and then the Beyond the Point show is on all podcast platforms, YouTube.
- 1:10:20Tim Brown: that's its own, like, separate page and all that on, on YouTube.
- 1:10:24Tim Brown: So, uh, all the episodes will be there.
- 1:10:27Tim Brown: Um, I do have a Patreon where the Patreon people will get everything first, and then all of the stuff that we can't really s- share on regular social media will be on there.
- 1:10:38Tyce: Okay.
- 1:10:38Tim Brown: cleaning of the birds and, and my buddies and I cutting up.
- 1:10:42Tim Brown: There's some stuff on...
- 1:10:43Tim Brown: I mean, language, you know, type
- 1:10:45Tyce: Hmm.
- 1:10:45Tim Brown: that I can't post, but is absolutely hilarious and I'd love everybody to see it.
- 1:10:50Tim Brown: But there's a lot of, there's a lot of, uh, some F-bombs dropped in it and whatnot, so it's, it's not, it's not suitable for
- 1:10:58Tyce: bantering.
- 1:10:59Tim Brown: way, right?
- 1:11:00Tim Brown: And,
- 1:11:01Tyce: tell people where they can find that, uh, become a Patreon for you.
- 1:11:05Tyce: Just patreon.com?
- 1:11:07Tim Brown: slash...
- 1:11:07Tim Brown: Yep, Patreon/uh The Bearded Uplander.
- 1:11:10Tim Brown: It'll come up.
- 1:11:12Tyce: OK
- 1:11:12Tim Brown: yep, you can just go to the Patreon and, and then search it.
- 1:11:15Tim Brown: There's two different tiers.
- 1:11:17Tim Brown: Uh, there'll be some discount codes and stuff with the bigger tier, from some partners and stuff like that.
- 1:11:22Tim Brown: So, and
- 1:11:23Tyce: Cool
- 1:11:24Tim Brown: it's j- and then there'll be cooking stuff and, and I'm gonna do a lot of habitat, what you're looking for when you're hunting certain species.
- 1:11:32Tim Brown: You know, all that stuff that I can give tips and tricks that
- 1:11:35Tyce: Well, you were talking about doing a pheasant count, right?
- 1:11:37Tyce: And you post it on there or something too
- 1:11:40Tim Brown: Y- yep, the pheasant count will be out for, for Northwest Iowa it'll be out this week on the
- 1:11:45Tyce: Cool.
- 1:11:46Tyce: Cool.
- 1:11:47Tim Brown: Um, yeah,
- 1:11:48Tyce: When will
- 1:11:49Tim Brown: was a little mad at, Travis was a little mad at me that I didn't come on the Flush podcast last week and, and say it.
- 1:11:54Tim Brown: And I'm like, of want to keep it for them guys first at least."
- 1:11:58Tyce: Yeah.
- 1:11:59Tyce: You have something special there.
- 1:12:00Tyce: Yeah.
- 1:12:01Tyce: Do,
- 1:12:01Tim Brown: And
- 1:12:02Tyce: what about those videos you- the hunts you're gonna be filming this year?
- 1:12:05Tyce: When, when will those come out?
- 1:12:07Tyce: Any idea?
- 1:12:08Tim Brown: th- think it's probably gonna be around the first of the year, I would think, just with the way the editing and everything will have to be done.
- 1:12:15Tyce: Yeah.
- 1:12:17Tim Brown: and it might be sooner, I'm not sure.
- 1:12:19Tim Brown: It just all depends on, on who, uh, or on fast they can turn it around,
- 1:12:25Tyce: Yeah.
- 1:12:26Tyce: Okay
- 1:12:26Tim Brown: the, the guys that we have doing it, I think it's gonna be turned around pretty quick, so it might be out earlier than that.
- 1:12:32Tim Brown: So
- 1:12:33Tyce: Cool.
- 1:12:33Tim Brown: say
- 1:12:35Tyce: Keep an eye out.
- 1:12:36Tim Brown: to, yep, to my page and, uh, to my page and Migra's page, and it'll be all over.
- 1:12:41Tim Brown: But yeah,
- 1:12:43Tyce: Okay
- 1:12:43Tim Brown: it'll be a lot of fun.
- 1:12:44Tim Brown: There's gonna be a lot of hunting and a lot of cool scenery for all
- 1:12:48Tyce: Okay,
- 1:12:49Tim Brown: So
- 1:12:49Tyce: cool.
- 1:12:50Tim Brown: yeah
- 1:12:51Tyce: if you wanna come meet Tim, sounds like September 16th, 6:00 PM.
- 1:12:55Tyce: Or get on his website, get signed up for that if you wanna come meet him and shake hands with some awesome guys and, and, uh, see how good a shot you are with your shotgun.
- 1:13:06Tyce: Sounds like it'll be a fun night
- 1:13:07Tim Brown: well, the last time I didn't shoot very well, but that was the first time that I picked up that gun to shoot it, so
- 1:13:13Tyce: Oh, okay.
- 1:13:14Tim Brown: very good at all
- 1:13:15Tyce: He's practiced now, folks, so be ready.
- 1:13:18Tim Brown: yep,
- 1:13:19Tyce: Or you better get practicing between now and then.
- 1:13:21Tim Brown: b- I guess I better go do that right now.
- 1:13:24Tyce: So, well, thanks Tim, for coming on the show, man.
- 1:13:27Tyce: Really, really appreciate you.
- 1:13:28Tyce: You guys give The Bearded Upland Hunter a follow on Instagram, every- everywhere he's at.
- 1:13:34Tyce: Um, he's a great guy.
- 1:13:35Tyce: I think he had a bunch of good stuff going on, uh, helping other dudes out with their mental, with mental health and stuff.
- 1:13:40Tyce: That's huge.
- 1:13:41Tyce: Doesn't get talked about a lot with men'cause we, we all think we're pretty bulletproof, right?
- 1:13:45Tyce: So, or we like, at least we like to act that way.
- 1:13:49Tim Brown: Yes, that's exactly right.
- 1:13:51Tyce: So thanks Tim.
- 1:13:52Tyce: Have, have a wonderful day.
- 1:13:53Tyce: Any- anything else you wanna end on or anything before we wrap it up?
- 1:13:57Tim Brown: No, just everybody have a good, safe season and, and enjoy it.
- 1:14:01Tim Brown: You know, like m- my buddy Dave Owen says, uh,"Take a, take a drink, not a sip."
- 1:14:06Tyce: Yeah, there you go.
- 1:14:07Tim Brown: don't leave anything out there, just take it all in when you go out there.
- 1:14:11Tyce: Awesome.
- 1:14:12Tyce: Great words of,
- 1:14:13Tim Brown: that note, I j-
