- 1:45on the podcast before we did her testimony where
- 1:48she talked about her book racing with my shadow
- 1:52and Karen is a prayer partner. She's a avid Bible
- 1:55studier She has a tremendous amount of information

- 2:12pray the next time we were on. No, I want you
- 2:15to pray before we start our study, before you
- 2:17get in, reopen the Bible. All right. Someone
- 2:20else can, if you want. And then we've got, uh,
- 2:24Karen O'Shea. It says Eric O'Shea and you're
- 2:26screaming at Karen O'Shea, the wife of Eric O'Shea.
- 2:28How are you tonight? We're just doing great.
- 2:31Thanks so much. Glad to have you guys. you've
- 2:35heard her before she we've interviewed her we
- 2:38heard eric and karen's testimony but we also
- 2:41heard karen share about her work at the pregnancy
- 2:44center they're in texas where they live and so
- 2:47she has been a gracious host for me many times
- 2:50in their home and she has a lot of great insight
- 2:53especially in the scriptures in regard to everyday
- 2:56life and application for sure. And so I'm so
- 2:59glad you're here. Eric Ogier, brother, it's good
- 3:02to see ya. It's good to see you, Rick. Thanks
- 3:04for having us on. Absolutely. So guys, if you
- 3:07remember, we also did the testimony with Eric,
- 3:09but he was also in another episode where we talked
- 3:12about the bucket ministry whenever you went to
- 3:15Kenya. So Eric has done missionary work. Um in
- 3:20africa and elsewhere around the world and he's
- 3:22also been involved in ministry You've been a
- 3:25pastor. Uh, you run a home church even now and
- 3:29so Uh, i've always appreciated your insight and
- 3:32your love and your care for our brethren and
- 3:35so i'm glad you're here. Oh, thanks for having
- 3:37us absolutely and Last but certainly not least.
- 3:41We've got danny and adrienne morton down in the
- 3:44lower right hand corner How are you guys tonight?
- 3:47Very good. Waiting for rain, we hope. Oh, you
- 3:51guys, is it drought out there? Oh, we've been
- 3:53drought for three months. Oh, yeah. We're like
- 3:57on phase three in our city. We can't water anything
- 4:01or do anything right now. Really? Lots of prayers
- 4:04will be appreciated for that or a rain dance
- 4:06or something. Or both, hey. Well, just be patient,
- 4:12Danny. We just got three inches here in the Dallas
- 4:14-Fort Worth area. So hopefully it's coming. Yeah,
- 4:17we're supposed to tomorrow morning, they say.
- 4:19Yeah, there you go. Oh, yeah. Well, that's good.
- 4:22No, I'm glad I've met Danny several times. Danny's
- 4:26never been on the burrows before. So welcome
- 4:28for your first episode. Thank you. I am looking
- 4:31forward to it for sure. Yeah. And so I've met
- 4:34Danny and Adrian at conferences. And then one
- 4:37time I went out, Shane Morgan had to get together
- 4:40with some predators out in Arkansas. I got an
- 4:42opportunity to meet you guys out there. And so
- 4:45We're actually meeting, we're actually going
- 4:47this Saturday to Searcy. The group is. Oh, wow.
- 4:52Yeah. Wow. I wish I could, I wish I could was
- 4:55closer to like all of you. I wish I do. Like
- 4:59I love to get together with everybody. It's one
- 5:01of my favorite things to do. And, um, it's just,
- 5:03it's a, it's a 10 hour drive. So it's not so
- 5:06easy. It's your own. And forget about it when
- 5:09you go to the OJs. You just got to fly. I'm not
- 5:11driving 15 hours. Can't do it. And I've had opportunities
- 5:14with Karen, like New Jersey's a great, Newark
- 5:17Airport's a great hub for flying around the country
- 5:21or international. And so if I fly up through
- 5:23there, I get a chance and I'll go to a diner
- 5:25with Karen and let her buy me some coffee. And
- 5:28I'll get you lost. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That happened
- 5:32the last time. We won't tell that story. We won't
- 5:35tell that story. Driving around. We drove around
- 5:38for hours. It was so much fun. But the diner
- 5:41was excellent though. It was really good. They
- 5:43had really good coffee. So that's why we got
- 5:46to yell Adrian. Yes. Danny's wife, Adrian. Um,
- 5:53one of the things that you'll love about Adrian,
- 5:55or at least as long as she's not shy here on
- 5:58this, on this call. and she's probably going
- 6:01to be shy aren't you she's not even this is a
- 6:04podcast you have to speak i'll poke her with
- 6:07a pan yes yeah yeah but she's always she's always
- 6:13so much fun every time i see at the conference
- 6:15i just love seeing you and i get so excited um
- 6:19so we also have two others we have rick big daddy
- 6:22carter who is not with us right now he's in arkansas
- 6:25and for a conference and He is gonna be jumping
- 6:29on here pretty soon. He was driving back to his
- 6:31hotel was gonna get on his laptop So he'll be
- 6:34joining us soon. We also have another cast member
- 6:37named Shelley Sangry Who is from no place like
- 6:41home, which is a YouTube channel. That's pretty
- 6:44popular, especially in the predators community
- 6:46And so she'll be here She may pop in tonight,
- 6:50but she may not be here for the first couple
- 6:52of episodes So but she is planning on being here
- 6:56as a regular cast member Now, before we get started,
- 7:02The Burrows of Berea initially was a Bible study
- 7:05podcast. And as it grew and as the cast grew
- 7:10in its original state, I started wanting to meet
- 7:13people and I would go around the country and
- 7:14have opportunities. And then I wanted to interview
- 7:17them. One of my favorite things, I love to listen
- 7:18to testimonies. We'll still have testimonies
- 7:21coming here on The Burrows of Berea podcast.
- 7:23I like to have guests that come and share about
- 7:26their work, you know, perhaps their books. I
- 7:28like to have people that come on that don't necessarily
- 7:32hold to my view that want to argue their point
- 7:34or want to try to, you know, just at least have
- 7:37a voice in the matter. So a lot of that's going
- 7:40to remain the same. But first and foremost, The
- 7:43Burzabria is a Bible study podcast. And we also
- 7:46like to speculate and just think outside of the
- 7:50box a little bit. and then try to bring it back
- 7:53to what we actually believe or our beliefs will
- 7:56change. That's kind of the goal here. And I've
- 7:59always wanted to study the book of Acts, the
- 8:01Acts of the Apostles with a group. I've studied
- 8:04it myself many, many times, but I've found like
- 8:07when you're in a group and other people are studying,
- 8:09sometimes they bring things you've never heard
- 8:11before. And that's what I'm looking forward to.
- 8:14But before we get started, Karen Rogers, would
- 8:17you mind opening us up in prayer? I don't have
- 8:22to be the one to pray. I was just kind of. Well,
- 8:25you suggested it. So yes, please. OK. OK. Heavenly
- 8:29Father, I just pray that you would be with us
- 8:32all. You would send your Holy Spirit to be with
- 8:34us all and that we would have a spirit of unity
- 8:36and love and that you would open up your word
- 8:41so that we could understand what you're trying
- 8:43to say to us. And we know the Holy Spirit's our
- 8:46teacher. And also each one of us might get little
- 8:50different views and we just pray that that you
- 8:53would be guiding us through this study and always
- 8:56that we are in spirit of love and we thank you
- 8:59in Jesus name. Amen. Amen. Amen. Thank you. So
- 9:04I'm going to bring up the Book of Acts on the
- 9:09screen here in just a minute. But before I do,
- 9:12I just wanted to chit chat with you guys a little
- 9:14bit. I would like to hear from each one of you.
- 9:21What you think about this particular book in
- 9:26the Bible Anybody you jump right in there. Tell
- 9:29me what you think. Have you guys have you guys
- 9:31been reading it in preparation for tonight? Are
- 9:34you just winging it or Is there anything about
- 9:37this book that jumps out at you right away or
- 9:40some information that you want to share before
- 9:42we get started? anyone Well, they're definitely
- 9:48finishing the work that Christ started and you
- 9:51know, Jesus said that in the gospels that my
- 9:55father has been working till now. Now I'm working
- 9:57and then he's going to send the true Israel to
- 10:00be successful this time. The apostles are the
- 10:03Israel that the Old Testament was supposed to
- 10:05be the light to the nations. They're going to
- 10:08succeed and I'm looking forward to from my covenant
- 10:12creation point to kind of show that how they
- 10:16were placed in a garden just like Adam was. That's
- 10:21interesting. This is going to be an interesting
- 10:23conversation for sure. Anybody else have anything
- 10:27you want to add? Well, you know, Rick, a lot
- 10:30of people may not know this. I mean, sometimes
- 10:33people are in church all the time and. They really
- 10:36don't realize who wrote the book of acts, you
- 10:39know, and so it's interesting in just as, as
- 10:43if we're going to get started, we're going to
- 10:44start at ground zero. It's, it's, um, we've got
- 10:47to understand that Luke wrote the book of acts.
- 10:49This is kind of part two of his, of his, of his
- 10:53book, Luke. It's a continuation, uh, for that.
- 10:56So for some that might be brand new for, for
- 10:59some folks to hear about. Hey, uh, who is Theopolis
- 11:05by the way? So I've always thought, I think that
- 11:11Theophilus is a former high priest and he's a
- 11:15son of Ananas. If you look at the high priest
- 11:19at the time, in the first century, prior to the
- 11:22destruction of the temple in Jerusalem, there
- 11:25is a high priest by the name of Theophilus ben
- 11:28Ananas, and then he also has a son named Theophilus
- 11:33Ananas. It's pretty interesting. I've thought
- 11:38that for quite some time, for the longest time.
- 11:41Theophilus means friend of God. And so I always
- 11:44thought, oh, this is just a play on words. It's
- 11:46friend of God. But I don't think so. I've begun
- 11:49to look at the book of Luke and Acts, both volumes
- 11:54as like a defense, not only of the faith, but
- 11:57also of the apostle Paul. And I think that it's
- 12:01pretty evident when you read it that He's categorizing.
- 12:06He tells Theophilus right out of the gate. Well,
- 12:09actually, when you look at the Book of Luke,
- 12:12how about I share my screen? Give me I want to
- 12:15show you something in the Book of Luke that will
- 12:16kind of get us ready for the. Let's see, is there
- 12:24a version that you guys prefer in your study?
- 12:28Like some people are King James. I like the NASB.
- 12:33We use NASB, but when we do our Bible studies,
- 12:39we're doing the CSB, the Christian Standard Bible.
- 12:45Does anybody have any issue with the Christian
- 12:47Standard Bible in this study for now? Is that
- 12:52a no? Because I can't see anything. I guess we
- 12:57need to talk, don't we? Shaking our head. Shaking
- 13:00your head. I mean, it might work for you guys
- 13:02on the video, but it's not working for the people
- 13:04who are just listening to audio. All right. So
- 13:06I'm going to share my screen. You guys should
- 13:08see it here in just a second. Is it big enough
- 13:12for you to read or do I need to zoom in a little
- 13:13bit? You need to zoom in a little bit, son. We
- 13:16old people can't see. All right. Or if you have
- 13:21a Bible on your desk. So here's something I wanted
- 13:24to point out. In in Luke chapter 1 verse 1 he
- 13:28says many have undertaken to compile a narrative
- 13:31about the events that have been fulfilled among
- 13:33us Just as the original eyewitnesses and servants
- 13:36of the word handed them down to us So it also
- 13:39seemed good to me since I have carefully Investigated
- 13:42everything from the very first to write to you
- 13:46in an orderly sequence most honorable Theophilus
- 13:52so that you may know the certainty of the things
- 13:54about which you have been instructed. So in other
- 13:59versions, it says most excellent theophilus.
- 14:03Yeah. It says instead of instructed, it says
- 14:06from what you have been told or what you have
- 14:08been taught. But the point that I want to make
- 14:12here is that most honorable theophilus. My, just
- 14:17me, this is me. I think that this is while he
- 14:22is actually acting as high priest. Whenever Luke
- 14:26is writing this I think that Theophilus is most
- 14:29likely the high priest at this time Okay, this
- 14:32is just my guess here, and I'll show you when
- 14:35we get to the book of Acts Why I think that he's
- 14:38no longer the high priest at that point again.
- 14:40I don't have any commentaries. This is just me
- 14:43reading Let me zoom it in just a hair for you
- 14:49here, and he says in Acts 1 verse 1. I wrote
- 14:54the first narrative Theophilus About all that
- 14:58Jesus began to do and teach until the day he
- 15:00was taken up after he had given instructions
- 15:02through the Holy Spirit to the Apostles he had
- 15:04chosen After he had suffered he also presented
- 15:07himself alive to them by many convincing proofs
- 15:10appearing to them over a period of 40 days and
- 15:12speaking about the kingdom of God so in this
- 15:15Prologue as he begins this part two this volume
- 15:18two. He's already telling you out of the gate
- 15:21There's a first narrative, but he used he leaves
- 15:23most excellent out and I was very curious about
- 15:26that Have you guys ever heard that before? Has
- 15:28anybody ever heard that? About Theophilus? Yeah,
- 15:32about him being a high priest? Yes. Yes. That
- 15:37is one well -considered opinion or thought process
- 15:43that he was a high priest at the time, or at
- 15:47least someone with a relative amount of prominence.
- 15:53He wrote Luke, excuse me, Acts to Theophilus.
- 15:58Right. So at that point, it had to be distributed
- 16:01and made known to the people. I know that he
- 16:07had to have some ranking when he was writing,
- 16:11when Luke was first writing the book of Luke.
- 16:14So there was something there, but there's something
- 16:16that I don't know if, you know, I'd like to dig
- 16:22a little bit more whether he was a high priest.
- 16:25I'm sure that there's some things there that.
- 16:28within God's Word that we can maybe find out
- 16:30that whether he was or not. Do you know what
- 16:33kind of a name Theopolis is? Is it a Roman name?
- 16:37Is it a Jewish name? See, I thought it was a
- 16:39Roman name. That was where I was kind of. I thought
- 16:41it was a Roman official. Yeah. I don't know.
- 16:44It's been considered a title as well as the name
- 16:48of a person. So in my study, the title was less
- 16:57an option than the actual name of a person that
- 17:01he knew well enough to address with this carefully
- 17:04investigated narrative of Luke, and then again,
- 17:08the Book of Acts. Right. Well, that's really
- 17:12interesting, Rick, because it says down there
- 17:15on the Johanna Oshuary that Joanna, the daughter
- 17:21of John, son of Theophilus, the high priest,
- 17:28And then it says, Joanna appears twice in the
- 17:32gospel of Luke. That's correct. Yeah. So that's
- 17:35pretty, that's like another link. Like you were
- 17:37saying that it could be. Yeah, that's excellent.
- 17:42And I did not know that until you literally just
- 17:44read that to me just now, which is crazy because
- 17:46I've studied this for a long time. So as you
- 17:50can see, It says here now this is again guys
- 17:55were speculating here, but I think it's a pretty
- 17:57decent speculation the timing works out It says
- 18:01Theophilus was the high priest in the Second
- 18:03Temple in Jerusalem from 37 to 41 AD Now if he
- 18:08was the high priest at the time in 37 to 41 Is
- 18:13it possible that the missionary journey of Paul?
- 18:17I don't know the timelines. Does it work because
- 18:21Luke doesn't show up, uh, until I think it's
- 18:25chapter 10 of acts where he's where Paul goes
- 18:28to Troas. And then you have that switch and talking
- 18:33about they, and then going to we, you guys know
- 18:36what I'm talking about where it becomes more
- 18:39personal. Sure. So if the timeline doesn't work,
- 18:42I don't know, but it just seems pretty interesting.
- 18:44Like she, you know, Kristen just said, Joe, Johanna,
- 18:47Johanna is mentioned. And she's the daughter
- 18:50of this high priest. And it says right here,
- 18:54Theophilus was a member of one of the wealthiest
- 18:55and most influential Jewish families in Judea
- 18:59prod province or idea. I think Judy is correct.
- 19:04During the first century, he was the son of Ananas
- 19:08and the brother of Eliezer, Jonathan Matias and
- 19:11Ananas, all of whom served as high priests. He
- 19:16was also the brother -in -law of Joseph Caiaphas.
- 19:20The high priest before him, Jesus of Nazareth
- 19:22appeared. In addition, his son, Matias, served
- 19:25as the next to the last high priest before the
- 19:27destruction of the temple by the Romans. That's
- 19:33who I think that this book is addressed to. Now,
- 19:36perhaps it's not. OK, but I was going to be my
- 19:40question to you, Rick. I mean, is is I mean.
- 19:44Obviously, we're always wanting to apply biblical
- 19:47hermeneutics, and we always want to know who
- 19:49the audience is. And so my question is that,
- 19:53is he the addressee of both of these letters?
- 19:59Yes, he is. I mean, Luke has written this to
- 20:05give him an account of basically Christianity,
- 20:10like how this is working within. And it makes
- 20:13more sense to me. that he's explaining it to
- 20:16someone. Luke is, from my understanding, Luke
- 20:20is an educated man, correct? So let's Luke wiki
- 20:28it, shall we? So I'm sorry, go ahead. I found
- 20:33out the name, the name is actually a Greek name
- 20:37and it was used by, it said it was used by Greeks,
- 20:42Romans and Jews. It was a personal name, not
- 20:45a title. And it says Most Excellent, maybe a
- 20:49Roman official, but it could also be, like you
- 20:52said, a high priest. So it's Most Excellent was
- 20:54giving him, like he was somebody important, but
- 20:57the name could be used for Jews or Romans or
- 21:01Greeks. Well, yeah, here was something else,
- 21:04too. If you look down here on the Joanna Oshawa,
- 21:08it says a woman called Joanna, wife of Chusa.
- 21:12And if you guys know who Choza was, he was a
- 21:15part of the household of Herod. Like he was over
- 21:18the household of Herod. I think that's what he
- 21:19was. So they're linked to the royal family, but
- 21:25they're also linked to the priesthood, it seems.
- 21:27It's quite possible. So there you go. There's
- 21:33that idea. So it says here and I'm just using
- 21:35Wiki, which is the greatest thing ever. People
- 21:38can just change it whenever they feel like it.
- 21:40Luke, the evangelist, would anybody can anybody
- 21:42read this? Can you see this? Could you read this
- 21:44paragraph? Luke, the evangelist. Is that what
- 21:48you're talking about? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. The four
- 21:53traditionally ascribed authors. Is that what
- 21:55you're? Yeah. Can you read that? Yes. Oh, you
- 21:59want me to read out loud? It's a podcast, Danny.
- 22:02We got to read out. Oh yeah, that's right. We
- 22:05don't do mimes. I'd like you to read it to the
- 22:08audience, would you? Yes, sir. Luke the Evangelist
- 22:14was one of the four evangelists, the four traditionally
- 22:16ascribed authors of the canonical gospels. The
- 22:18early church fathers ascribed to him authorship
- 22:21of both the gospel of Luke and the acts of the
- 22:24apostles, prominent figures in early Christianity,
- 22:27such as Jerome. Eupus later reaffirmed his authorship
- 22:32scholarly opinion on the tradition is roughly
- 22:35evenly divided near the end of the 20th century.
- 22:39Yeah, very good. So this is kind of interesting.
- 22:42So whenever you talk about the canon, most of
- 22:45the time they talk about these books were selected
- 22:50because it was from the apostles. Luke's not
- 22:55an apostle. Correct. Luke is somebody that traveled
- 23:00with Paul, but not all the time. And Luke goes
- 23:06around in the early, you know, when he goes around
- 23:09investigating, I could be wrong here. I don't
- 23:13know if anybody has access to chat GPT to ask
- 23:15the question, but I think Luke is the only one
- 23:19in his gospel that says that Mary had kept something
- 23:22in her heart. And I think he says it like two
- 23:25or three times. Am I right about that? That Mary
- 23:28contemplated these sayings that the angel appeared
- 23:32to her. Right. Yeah. It was there and elsewhere.
- 23:35There were, there were things that she, she had
- 23:38kept in her heart that she had, uh, she didn't
- 23:40release. It makes me think that Luke being this
- 23:43investigator who's going around getting this
- 23:46information is, you know, in pinning it down
- 23:49so that he can give a report to Theophilus is
- 23:51getting this information from Mary. Mary could
- 23:54be one of the people that he Uh, is asking these
- 23:58questions up. Yeah. So, uh, if you want to look
- 24:01at Luke two 19 and then Luke two 51, okay. That,
- 24:05that phrase is, or that phrase is being used.
- 24:09All right. Uh, let's see. Luke 19. Luke was a
- 24:14doctor. Yes. A physician, a physician. Yeah.
- 24:17That's what it said. So Luke 19, but Mary treasured
- 24:21all these things, pondering them in her heart.
- 24:23So this is in regard to the angels, right? uh
- 24:27that let's see glory to god oh yeah whenever
- 24:30the angels come out and the shepherds come and
- 24:33this is at his birth during the annunciation
- 24:36of christ's birth and then it says and yeah but
- 24:39mary treasured all these things pondering them
- 24:41in her heart that this is like how do you know
- 24:44that how do you know that right well you know
- 24:48it because she told luke yeah I mean, that's
- 24:52just how I think it could be. I think it's also
- 24:54in Luke, uh, in verse 51 too, as well. I think
- 24:57he restates it there and two 51. Yep. So on down
- 25:02here a little bit in the chapter here. Yep. And
- 25:05he went down with them and came to Nazareth and
- 25:07he continued to be subject to them and his mother
- 25:09treasured all these things in her heart. That's
- 25:13really good. And you said it was elsewhere where
- 25:15in four. No, no, it's just Luke 2 19 and 251.
- 25:20So it's in two. So when all of these things surrounding
- 25:22Jesus, now here he's presented at the temple
- 25:26at the age of eight, then they go to Egypt and
- 25:29they return. No, this is still during his birth.
- 25:35So she visits her Jerusalem. Okay, so then whenever
- 25:38he is journeying and he this is when he's 12
- 25:42years old at this point. So this is where, that's
- 25:46interesting. So the Annunciation happens and
- 25:49the angels tell the shepherds, you know, glory
- 25:51to God, peace on earth, goodwill towards men,
- 25:54this announcement. And then they all come and
- 25:58here's this mother with her child. And this is
- 26:00something she treasured in her heart. So Rick,
- 26:04can we say that Luke, the book of Luke, right
- 26:08there in Luke one, look at Luke one four, I think.
- 26:16He's mentioning something along the lines where
- 26:19he's, it almost appears he's trying to take copious
- 26:26notes of all the narratives of what he's talking
- 26:29about there, because he wants it to be certain
- 26:31of what he's, it's almost like he's trying to
- 26:33get firsthand knowledge from everybody. Yes.
- 26:37Look at first four, I think, there. Yeah, and
- 26:39right before it actually to write it out for
- 26:41you in an orderly sequence. Yeah, excellent Theophilus
- 26:44so That you may know the exact truth about the
- 26:47things you have been taught This is gonna carry
- 26:49on into the book of Acts. Yeah, cuz I've got
- 26:52I've got I've got Acts 1 1 pulled up here and
- 26:55he starts this off in Acts 1 He says I wrote
- 26:58the first narrative which is the book of Luke
- 27:01Theophilus all about that Jesus began to do and
- 27:06teach So here's that. There's that connection
- 27:09that I think, you know, young Bible students
- 27:12need to hear about of understanding that Luke
- 27:15and Acts go together, how he did the Book of
- 27:20Luke's, which was from a very, you know, personal
- 27:22eyewitness and almost invest kind of a investigative
- 27:29reporter. As a way I look at Luke there in the
- 27:32book of Luke and he's gonna do the same thing
- 27:34here In the book of Acts. So what what we've
- 27:38learned about what we learned about Jesus Christ
- 27:40in his life and all of his acts that he did in
- 27:44in Jesus's life we see that narrative From Luke
- 27:48from that position that can investigate a reporter
- 27:51and then we're gonna see the same thing So so
- 27:54it's kind of like he's telling their Theophilus.
- 27:57Hey how I did Luke Now this letter that's coming
- 28:01to you is going to be written in the same way.
- 28:05Plus that makes sense if he recorded and investigated
- 28:10about Mary treasuring these things in her heart
- 28:13because all that Jesus began to do and teach.
- 28:15So he knows all this. So, Rick, do you think
- 28:22the office had already had that copy first before
- 28:25he got the second copy? So for him to say it
- 28:29if you go to look when you read it in Luke 1
- 28:31what he says here Having investigated everything
- 28:35carefully from the beginning to write it out
- 28:37for you in an orderly sequence Meaning that there
- 28:40was a disorderly sequence and one that was not
- 28:42ordered before so you have We know that I don't
- 28:46know if the queue documents real whatever. I
- 28:48don't know, but there's this belief that there
- 28:51were these writings that were about the words
- 28:54that Jesus spoke that were being passed around
- 28:56the early church. And then we know that Mark
- 29:00was the first gospel that would come out. And
- 29:04then some believe it's Matthew. And I think that's
- 29:08correct. I think Matthew came out after Mark.
- 29:10They call Matthew Fat Mark. It's just additional
- 29:13information that's being given. But each gospel
- 29:16has its particular audience. I think that's for
- 29:19sure. I'm going to use that, Rick, because my
- 29:23husband's name is Matt and his brother's name
- 29:24is Mark. So I'm just like, oh, yeah, I've always
- 29:30been known as Fat Rick. You're just extra, you
- 29:33know, more love. That's exactly right. Yeah.
- 29:41So that's no, that's that's good, Eric. And I
- 29:43think I think definitely from an investigative
- 29:45point. But one of the things that Rick Carter
- 29:47would say if he were here and he's not, but he
- 29:49would. He always like zoned in on that orderly
- 29:54sequence. He said, you know, of all of the different
- 29:57gospels, when you look at it from the timeline
- 29:59perspective, that Mark seems to bounce around,
- 30:04Matthew seems to bounce around, but Luke seems
- 30:07to hold things in like this orderly fashion.
- 30:10And so we started looking at it as like, maybe
- 30:13we can use Luke and Acts as a way to place things.
- 30:16And we know that when you read the book of Acts,
- 30:19that you can find where Paul would have, you
- 30:22know, sent an epistle to a church at a particular
- 30:25time, you know, where, for example, whenever
- 30:28he's in Thessalonica, and then he goes to Berea,
- 30:32and then he goes on to Athens. And then we know
- 30:35that there was persecution going on. Hello? Sorry,
- 30:42I had to test that right real quick. There is
- 30:45Big Daddy. What part of Arkansas are you in?
- 30:53I'm in right outside of Little Rocks, a town
- 30:55called Mommel. Oh, you're 30 minutes from me.
- 31:01Oh, sweet. Or 20, 25 minutes from me. Oh wow.
- 31:06Y 'all go get some chicken wings or something,
- 31:08man. I'll leave early in the morning to hit an
- 31:11airplane so I can fly back home. Ah, well. Start
- 31:15to interrupt. Yeah, you're good. It's all good,
- 31:19brother. Maybe he was more orderly because he
- 31:22was a doctor. Luke? There you go. More into details
- 31:26and being meticulous. I'd like to add more. He
- 31:28don't write his prescriptions. If he wrote prescriptions,
- 31:31you can't read them. Yeah, I'd like to add to
- 31:34that. Just go ahead. Just because he points out
- 31:37the fact that his is orderly, we can't assume
- 31:41that others were disorderly. Because if he is
- 31:44a doctor, he's meticulous. He's got a thought
- 31:47process. He's gifted in that way. Just because
- 31:51someone is orderly, that is not an accusation
- 31:55that other people are this way. Well, I agree
- 31:59disorderly by like in a bad way I I meant there
- 32:02was an improper use of English I meant like out
- 32:05of order not necessarily sequential as Luke would
- 32:09he seems to be saying that because it's the sequence
- 32:12that's orderly That's right the sequence and
- 32:15so big daddy I was telling him how whenever we
- 32:17did our previous study That one of the things
- 32:20we used to say about the gospel of Luke is that
- 32:22Luke seemed to be trying to put things in a more
- 32:24orderly fashion or sequentially, whereas some
- 32:27of the other books, you know, if you read them
- 32:30together, it looks like things are out of order.
- 32:34Right. And so that doesn't mean that that's the
- 32:37case. We're just saying it seems like that's
- 32:38what Luke is saying he's doing. I would agree.
- 32:42So that when you read the synoptic gospels together
- 32:45or usually, or if you don't read them in the
- 32:48order in which they were written, um, in the
- 32:50time that they were released, you, you kind of
- 32:53get there's a bit of a confusion that can possibly
- 32:56happen because they have different information
- 33:00between them. But if you read them in the order
- 33:03in which they were released, you seem to get
- 33:05the narrative of the information that seems to
- 33:08grow based on the ones released later. Because
- 33:12if you start with Mark, then you go to Matthew,
- 33:15then you go to John and Luke, you begin to see
- 33:18something completely different between all of
- 33:20the synoptic gospels and the way they were released.
- 33:23Um, most of Luke is third party information.
- 33:28He wasn't there for most of it, just like Matthew
- 33:31was not in for behalf of his book. A lot of his
- 33:35third party. So you have to take some of it to
- 33:38some degree, at least ask questions. And when
- 33:40you look at the details of what's released and
- 33:43it's like, how did he gain that information?
- 33:45How did he, how did some of it be released to
- 33:47him? How did he get, uh, who was telling him?
- 33:52Is it, uh, Peter? Is it the other disciples?
- 33:55Is it outside people that's giving that information?
- 33:58Mayor Mangolin? We are doing the best we can
- 34:02with what information is given and trying to
- 34:05create the narrative that's available to better
- 34:09understand this thing. Yeah. And we did mention
- 34:12that a little bit earlier, Rick. No, that's okay.
- 34:17We were actually just saying what a great investigative
- 34:21reporter Luke was. It does seem like he did have
- 34:29at least some discussion with Mary, the mother
- 34:31of Jesus, over some things that were pondering
- 34:34in her heart. So yeah, it's pretty cool. What
- 34:38we were just contemplating is this part one of
- 34:44Luke in part two of the book of Acts written
- 34:47by the same person to Theophilus and who Theophilus
- 34:51is. And it's just pretty cool about how everything
- 34:53is pulling everything together. Well, in the
- 34:57climate, if we look at the context of the climate
- 34:59of the environment that they were in, because
- 35:02we have a particular view of our eschatology,
- 35:05we know the events that are coming up that are
- 35:07going to be very coming very soon to them. Yeah.
- 35:11What's also difficult is that the information
- 35:13that's being shared They're also under tremendous
- 35:17amount of pressure not to release this stuff,
- 35:20not to say anything about it. There are, there's
- 35:23already documented information that they were,
- 35:26that the disciples were being captured. We'll
- 35:28talk about it pretty soon. Like that. They were
- 35:30told not to talk about these things. So from
- 35:34the standpoint of where Luke's at, I can't understand.
- 35:38I would not fathom the amount of stress that
- 35:40he may be under trying to gain this information.
- 35:44And then, on top of that writing, if he gives
- 35:47it to Theophilus, which we don't know truly the
- 35:50dynamic of their relationship, who's to say that
- 35:53Theophilus doesn't turn Luke in and exploit the
- 35:57information that he's been given? To one, tell
- 36:00where the people are, because they're trying
- 36:02to hunt, I would assume, that they're trying
- 36:04to hunt them down, because the information that
- 36:07they have is counterintuitive to the information
- 36:10they're trying to give. Does any of that make
- 36:13sense? Oh, absolutely. It does. It sure does.
- 36:17And, and Luke, and actually here it is. This
- 36:20is why I pulled it up in Acts chapter 16, just
- 36:23so that you guys know. Um, I'll read from verse
- 36:27six, listen to it closely. They went through
- 36:29the region of Phrygia and Galatia. They had been
- 36:32forbidden by the Holy spirit to speak the word
- 36:34in Asia. When they came to my SIA, they tried
- 36:37to go into Bithynia, but the spirit of Jesus
- 36:39did not allow them passing by my SIA. They went
- 36:42down to Troas. During the night Paul had a vision
- 36:45in which a Macedonian man was standing and pleading
- 36:47with him cross over to Macedonia and help us
- 36:50after he had seen the vision he we meet we Immediately
- 36:55made efforts. Do you see that? And after they
- 36:58had seen the vision we immediately made efforts
- 37:00to set out for Macedonia Concluding that God
- 37:02had called us to preach the gospel to them from
- 37:04Troas we put out to sea and sailed straight for
- 37:06Samothrace. So This is where it shifts. So it's
- 37:12all the way in Acts chapter 16 before Luke even
- 37:15shows up on the scene, right? So go ahead. No,
- 37:21you go ahead. It's, it's a little bit off subject,
- 37:23but you are asking about the book of acts and
- 37:26what you just said was how the Holy spirit kept
- 37:28them from going one place and sent them to another
- 37:30place. My view is that the book of acts is about
- 37:34how the Holy spirit changed everything. I mean,
- 37:38they were. they were divided and they were always
- 37:40arguing before the Holy Spirit came on the scene.
- 37:43They were like, who's better? And they were turning,
- 37:46you know, they were, Peter said, you know, he
- 37:49turned on Jesus and all that. But when the Holy
- 37:52Spirit came, which is how the book starts, they
- 37:55were all united. They had power and the spirit
- 37:58told them where to go and where not to go. And
- 38:01it's throughout the whole entire book is the
- 38:03Holy Spirit was leading them and guiding them
- 38:06as Jesus promised. He said, I will wait. until
- 38:09you get the Spirit to show you. And they waited
- 38:1310 days for the Holy Spirit to come. And when
- 38:17they got the Spirit, they chose somebody. They
- 38:20knew where to go. They knew where not to go.
- 38:22They always asked the Spirit first. And that's
- 38:25the Spirit of Christ. That is what he gave them,
- 38:28which was better that he leave because when he
- 38:31left, he sent the Spirit to be in them, to give
- 38:33them strength, to give them teaching. to give
- 38:36them, they just completely changed and they were
- 38:39united in one spirit. So my, when I read the
- 38:43book of Acts, I just see the Holy Spirit directing
- 38:46God's work on earth. And I think it's the same
- 38:49today. I think we need to listen to the Holy
- 38:52Spirit more than we do. I think that that's so
- 38:56discredited, discounted today, how much the Holy
- 38:59Spirit can guide us, because we tend to run ahead
- 39:01in our own, and they didn't do that in the book
- 39:03of Acts. They never ran ahead. The Holy Spirit
- 39:05would tell them, don't go there, go here, and
- 39:08they would always pray. And if you'll notice
- 39:10that, that is a template for us to always ask.
- 39:15We have the Spirit of God in us. We have the
- 39:17Holy Spirit to teach us, to guide us, and if
- 39:21we would listen, We would then know what God
- 39:24is doing in the world and where to go and who
- 39:26to preach you just like they did We you know,
- 39:28we tend to just want to do these works instead
- 39:30of asking God. Where are you going? What do you
- 39:33want to do? And that's what they did. They always
- 39:36went to the Holy Spirit So that's I mean I see
- 39:39that as a major theme is that is the template
- 39:41for how the church is supposed to live Yeah,
- 39:45that's really good because and you're right because
- 39:48it is constantly about what the spirit is saying
- 39:53and doing a manifesting in order to bring the
- 39:56church, you know, throughout the whole world.
- 39:59And so I absolutely agree. That's a great, great
- 40:02point. Eric and I were recently introduced to
- 40:05the idea that the book would appropriately be
- 40:08called the acts of the Holy Spirit as well, based
- 40:12on what Karen just said there, that this is spirit
- 40:14driven. And Christ even said, my spirit, I send
- 40:18to you that or the Father will send to remind
- 40:23you of the things that I taught you. And so we
- 40:27have in our culture currently a very misguided
- 40:31idea of who and what the Holy Spirit is and does.
- 40:35And rather than a genie out of a bottle, He's
- 40:38the very spirit and essence of Christ Himself
- 40:41to remind us today of the things that Jesus is
- 40:46teaching us through His Word. So that is a beautiful
- 40:49concept, Karen, that the Holy Spirit is leading
- 40:53and guiding. And he's being very active throughout
- 40:57this book, most definitely active. And everything's
- 41:00not peachy for God's people here. No, there's
- 41:05some wild stuff in this book. Yes. Yes. And yet
- 41:09the book of Acts leads us to a victorious and
- 41:14rejoicing Christianity, though it may cost. there's
- 41:18always a cost to doing nothing and to being obedient.
- 41:22There's a cost either way. And so, yes, this
- 41:27is a very precious book because it is so Holy
- 41:30Spirit driven. They had to rely on the Spirit.
- 41:34They didn't have what we have today with regard
- 41:38to the written word per se. that we have to study
- 41:43it over and over and over. It was passed around
- 41:45these letters. They were passed around and probably
- 41:48hand copied over and over and over again. So
- 41:52it's a treasure. But the spirit is the power
- 41:56of God. It's the presence of Jesus. It's the
- 41:59power. And even if you don't have a Bible, I
- 42:01mean, the Bible goes along with it, but they
- 42:04didn't have it. And they had the spirit of Christ.
- 42:06They had his spirit teaching them and guiding
- 42:08them. And they were obedient. They didn't say,
- 42:11no, we're going to do it our way. They said,
- 42:12OK, we won't go there. We will hear. And they
- 42:15were all united. Do you think they sat around
- 42:18and wondered, gee, are we missing God on this?
- 42:21Are we hearing God? Are we missing God? Did I
- 42:23miss God when I said that or did that or we went
- 42:25here? And that's that's a lot of the lingo that
- 42:28we hear in a Christian culture. Don't miss God.
- 42:33And something turns what we would call negatively
- 42:36or what the scriptures calls a trial or affliction.
- 42:38Oh, we must have missed God. you know, God surely
- 42:41would not have led us to affliction or trial
- 42:44or persecution. So this is a very encouraging
- 42:47book that we have here. And I agree with you,
- 42:50Karen. I'd like to pipe in here for today, very
- 42:54much for today. Yeah, I'd like to pipe in on
- 42:57that. And I know we're going to get to it a little
- 42:58bit later. But, you know, this this there's so
- 43:01many connections, obviously, to the spirit and
- 43:06the presence of God. Karen Rogers, you've mentioned
- 43:09it. Karen O'Shea, you've mentioned it already.
- 43:12And just to whet everybody's appetite as we kind
- 43:16of go forward, we know that when God's presence
- 43:19showed up, whether it was the ordination of the
- 43:24tabernacle, God came down in fire. The same thing
- 43:29happened with Solomon's temple. He came down
- 43:31in fire. And then what we see in the book of
- 43:34Acts, that God no longer resides in a temple
- 43:38or a land or a tabernacle or a tent. Those tongues
- 43:43of flame represents that he resides in us and
- 43:46we are now his mobile temples to take the gospel
- 43:50forth. And so it really kind of... stitches everything
- 43:55together when we hear Paul telling us that, you
- 43:57know, over in Ephesians, that Jesus is the chief
- 44:00cornerstone and we are the living stones within
- 44:02that temple, and how the temple is now mobile
- 44:07through God's people by the power of the Holy
- 44:10Spirit. That's good. Kristen, you were about
- 44:13to say something. Well, I have a question. OK.
- 44:18But I don't want to start trouble. This is an
- 44:23honest question that I've had like long before
- 44:25I was a preterist I remember sitting around with
- 44:28a group of women and we were talking about this
- 44:30and You know, I guess my question is if we are
- 44:35filled with the Holy Spirit now Why do we not
- 44:38see the outpouring of miracles like they saw
- 44:41it? I mean, why aren't we speaking in tongues?
- 44:43I mean Unless some of you think we are but I
- 44:46don't see that happening. But like even if we
- 44:49Continue on and acts like it's like the next
- 44:51thing is the lame beggars healed, you know, they're
- 44:54healing the blind and and I think of like It
- 44:59seems to me like every example in the Bible that
- 45:03I can think of it is specific that when it says
- 45:06like God's spirit came on someone like remember
- 45:09Saul It's like his the spirit came on saw and
- 45:13he like got naked and started prophesying and
- 45:15they said is Saul among the prophets. He couldn't
- 45:18help it. He was doing these things. And I just
- 45:22wonder what your thoughts are on that. Because
- 45:26I think it was when I was going through a phase
- 45:29where I wanted to be able to defend my faith
- 45:32from atheists or something. And I was thinking
- 45:36through all these things that they might think.
- 45:39And I think if you weren't a Christian and you
- 45:41were looking at this and saying we're we're filled
- 45:45with the spirit and you know, they'd be like
- 45:47well then You know heal that blind man raise
- 45:50that dead person. I mean those are the things
- 45:53that they were doing Do you understand what I'm
- 45:56saying? Yeah I don't know this to be Factual
- 46:04but but as you're talking, I'm also thinking
- 46:06Kristen of how physical things had to be to point
- 46:13to the spiritual and as eric mentioned a moment
- 46:16ago it was always a physical temple it was always
- 46:19a place you had to go that's where god was and
- 46:22you had to go to god but here god came to us
- 46:27god came to them and resides with them and we
- 46:30know from the book of john that he dwells in
- 46:34his people and so when i'm thinking i've asked
- 46:37that same question well why aren't we doing all
- 46:39the things that they did and I'm wondering if
- 46:43these physical healings weren't there to prove
- 46:48that the Father had sent the Son to be the Savior
- 46:52of the world and that Jesus did say, you're going
- 46:57to be doing these things and even more, a longer
- 47:01period of time than Jesus did them. So perhaps
- 47:06there is still an element of the physical dynamic
- 47:10these miracles to prove or to point to the fact
- 47:14that Christ is real the big problem in that first
- 47:17century and well prior to that that what led
- 47:19up to the destruction in 8070 is that the religious
- 47:24leaders and others did not believe that the father
- 47:28had sent the son and Starting in Matthew go all
- 47:33the way through the scriptures get into John's
- 47:35epistles and we see constantly that Jesus is
- 47:41referring to the fact that he and the Father
- 47:43are one. Just dozens and dozens of times he's
- 47:47referring to the fact that the Father sent him.
- 47:49He and the Father are one. I only do what I see
- 47:52my Father do. The Father's will is my will. Over
- 47:55and over again he is proving and constantly driving
- 47:58that point that the Father has fulfilled those
- 48:01prophecies. He has sent the Son. to be the Savior
- 48:05and he's constantly referring to the Father all
- 48:07throughout the New Testament written works here.
- 48:11So perhaps there is a physical element still
- 48:14in all of these healings and these miracles to
- 48:18keep pointing to the fact that Jesus is who the
- 48:22prophets and the Law said that he would be and
- 48:24God did send him and I don't know the answer
- 48:27to that question other than that. In John chapter
- 48:3217 it says that all believers will have his spirit
- 48:35because it says in John 17 20 This is Jesus I
- 48:39do not pray for these alone but also for those
- 48:42who will believe in me Through their word and
- 48:45that's us and then he says that they all may
- 48:48be one as you father are in me and I in you that
- 48:51they also may be one in us that the world may
- 48:55believe that you sent me so that's the scripture
- 48:58to just nailed that home. And also Jesus healed
- 49:04somebody and said, so that you know I have the
- 49:06power to save you, I'm going to heal you physically.
- 49:10Remember that story? So I think a lot of miracles
- 49:14happen to prove He was who He says He was. But
- 49:16I think today we do not listen to the Holy Spirit.
- 49:19We do not use the power we have. We're one in
- 49:23Christ and the Father. We have tremendous power
- 49:26and we negate it. We depend on ourselves. Do
- 49:29you think that if we did, like, could we tap
- 49:33into this power of the Holy Spirit inside of
- 49:35us, and then we would be doing the miracles like
- 49:38they were, and we're just not doing it? I think
- 49:40that the Holy Spirit taps into us, if I'm honest.
- 49:43As we're doing the work, the blind are being
- 49:50healed. The lame are being healed. But Kristen,
- 49:53I'm talking spiritually, not necessarily physically.
- 49:57But as we are walking, in the light as Christ
- 50:01is in the light. Those people around us, their
- 50:06eyes are being opened. I get that, and I understand
- 50:10that that's the more important thing for sure,
- 50:12the spiritual aspect of it, but they were also
- 50:15being spiritually healed in the century too.
- 50:18They were getting the best of both worlds kind
- 50:21of. Yes, they were. Is there a verse, am I just
- 50:23making this up, that says something about he
- 50:26was going to give the Spirit as a deposit. Yes,
- 50:30it's a down payment in our translations. So could
- 50:36it be that like we have Christ in us now, which
- 50:41is like something even greater? I don't know
- 50:45if that's how you'd phrase it, but the deposit
- 50:47isn't the thing, right? Like you put a deposit
- 50:51down on your house that you're going to buy and
- 50:54then you get the house and that's the bigger
- 50:56thing. So if the Holy Spirit was the deposit,
- 50:59it seems that whatever we have now is bigger
- 51:02than that. We have the glorified Christ in us.
- 51:07I mean, he had to go to heaven and be glorified
- 51:10before we could get his spirit. I mean, it would
- 51:14make sense to me that the reason they could do
- 51:16the miracles in the first century was because
- 51:18they had this deposit, the Holy Spirit, and the
- 51:22miracles were to prove that this deposit was
- 51:25evidence of this greater thing that was coming,
- 51:29you know, I don't. I'm going to share my screen.
- 51:33So we'll just actually read what you just, you
- 51:35were just talking. It's Ephesians 1 14. And this
- 51:40is in the NASB. 13 and 14. Yeah. In him, you
- 51:44also. After listening to the message of truth
- 51:47the gospel of your salvation having also believed
- 51:49you were sealed in him with the Holy Spirit of
- 51:51promise who is Given as a pledge of our inheritance
- 51:55with a view to the redemption of God's own possession
- 51:58to the praise of his glory He is the seal. He
- 52:02is the inheritance him. It's Jesus. It's his
- 52:05spirit Well, so Holy Spirit no No, it's definitely
- 52:13but Kristen No, sorry. Kristen, have you ever
- 52:19seen a miracle ever in your life? Well, I just
- 52:24had a video out recently where I said that everything
- 52:27that God does is a miracle. Like, I believe that
- 52:30every single breath we take is a miracle. Every
- 52:32day the sun comes up, it's a miracle. You know,
- 52:36everything is a miracle. But I have never seen
- 52:39someone lay their hands on a blind man and have
- 52:42them see or spit in their face and have them
- 52:45see. I've never seen A person that couldn't walk
- 52:48and and he says get up and walk. I mean, I've
- 52:51seen people fake doing that. It's all but I've
- 52:53never seen it happen. I've never seen a dead
- 52:56man and they now I know people like Karen have
- 52:59have died and I believe she legitimately died,
- 53:02but I've never seen someone walk up to a dead
- 53:04person and say get up. So I've never seen I've
- 53:09never seen speaking in tongues the way they were
- 53:11doing it. So you know, I think we have to. There's
- 53:16a to me. It's just like it was obvious to me
- 53:18that there's something different Going on in
- 53:21the book of acts that I know I don't see that
- 53:25happening today. I hope that isn't Yes So much
- 53:30harm Kristen that we have seen in all of our
- 53:34years together My brother was in a hospital very
- 53:38ill at 23 22 years old And we were visiting a
- 53:43church where they believed in faith healing.
- 53:45And they came and prayed for him and told him
- 53:48to get out of that house, unplug those IVs and
- 53:50get out of that bed and walk. And of course he
- 53:53was ill the rest of his adult life, very ill.
- 53:57And so it didn't work, so to speak. So it's very
- 54:02troubling that all through the years most of
- 54:04us have seen it not work. in the name of Jesus
- 54:07with regard to these supernatural miracles of
- 54:12healing. And as you said, raising people and
- 54:15healing people from blindness and even from broken
- 54:19limbs, severe heart issues, or even autism. I
- 54:26say that you're healed in the name. This curse
- 54:28is gone in the name of Jesus. You're no longer
- 54:30autistic. And then you see them a week later
- 54:33and they're still autistic. I'm with you on that.
- 54:37That's a great question. Of course it has to
- 54:40be. Not our will. Like, we don't have the power
- 54:44to do that. If we go in somewhere and say, I'm
- 54:46going to heal this person in the name of Jesus,
- 54:48if it's not God working and God sending you there
- 54:51to do that through the Holy Spirit, and you know
- 54:55he's sending you there because then things will
- 54:59happen. When the Holy Spirit tells you to do
- 55:01something and you do it, miracles happen. but
- 55:03when you're doing it on your own power it doesn't
- 55:05happen does it point back to the fact that in
- 55:09the acts that the holy spirit was leading and
- 55:12guiding them and the holy spirit didn't let them
- 55:14go and the holy spirit didn't let them say this
- 55:17but he took them there and caused them to say
- 55:19this and that and the other why i'm going to
- 55:22go back to to christian's question why do we
- 55:26not seem to be as guided and as powerful as the
- 55:32acts We don't listen. We don't listen for the
- 55:37Holy Spirit. I don't think many people do. So
- 55:40you don't think that a single believer on planet
- 55:43Earth? No, I think a lot of them do. But I think
- 55:46in the major churches, it's not taught. And a
- 55:49lot of the healings are fake. They're man -made.
- 55:52They're not Holy Spirit. Sure. I've actually
- 55:55been, I've experienced it, Kristin. I've seen
- 56:02an actual miracle take place and I didn't have
- 56:07the faith while it was happening. I've shared
- 56:12this on the boroughs in the past, but there was
- 56:15a woman who had stage four pancreatic cancer.
- 56:17She lived here in Hoopers Creek and she requested
- 56:22that the church would come and pray with her
- 56:25because she was going to have this very aggressive
- 56:29experimental treatment done. at some facility.
- 56:35I always say it's Kentucky, but I think I was
- 56:37wrong. I think it was going to be in Houston.
- 56:39But whatever it was, she was going for this.
- 56:41And so she wanted the church to pray that this,
- 56:43you know, that this radical treatment would work.
- 56:47And so when I went, I prayed along with the church
- 56:51but I just I didn't believe it if I can just
- 56:53be honest like I've been in those kinds of services
- 56:57before and I'm like ah whatever you know whatever's
- 56:59gonna happen is gonna happen you know and then
- 57:01or I would say or the cop out for me being reformed
- 57:04was well it's if it's God's will it's God's will
- 57:06I mean that's just fair right so I um that was
- 57:10me but there were plenty of people that were
- 57:13there in that group of people and there was probably
- 57:16about 40 people there that were just weeping
- 57:20and they were praying that God would deliver
- 57:23her from this pancreatic cancer and stage four
- 57:29most of you guys know I mean it's you're not
- 57:31going to come back from that I mean very easily
- 57:33and she left the next morning and she even requested
- 57:40that they put anointed oil on a handkerchief,
- 57:43which is something that you find in the book
- 57:45of Acts. And we're not Pentecostal. We're deeply
- 57:47Baptist. We don't do this, but she, she requested
- 57:50it. Okay. And so they did anointed with oil.
- 57:53They prayed with her with the oil and that, and
- 57:55then they gave it to her and she left out the
- 57:57next morning, very early five in the morning.
- 58:01And when she arrived at the facility where this
- 58:05treatment was going to be done, when they brought
- 58:09her in to do the scans, to start working on it,
- 58:13she had no cancer in her body zero now when i
- 58:19heard that the first thing that i thought was
- 58:21well then she most likely didn't have cancer
- 58:24before but she had all of the information from
- 58:28before so it was real okay this woman actually
- 58:33had stage four pancreatic cancer people prayed
- 58:36and then the cancer was no longer there so somebody
- 58:40got through Or the Lord that was what the Lord
- 58:42wanted or that's what she wanted her faith was
- 58:44so strong that God gave her what she asked for
- 58:48Are we right back to what Karen was talking about
- 58:53like if we just had enough faith and I think
- 58:56that look What I can't answer is why? Because
- 59:02like I said, I didn't believe it. I didn't believe
- 59:04it So I wasn't the one that was in there that
- 59:07had all the faith that was moving mountains You
- 59:09know, I, I always said, if you want to move a
- 59:12mountain, then you better bring a shovel. I mean,
- 59:13that's me. Like that's the world that I grew
- 59:15up. That's the way I thought. But that's not
- 59:18how it worked in that particular instance. So
- 59:21that's always stuck with me as something that
- 59:23I, I kind of hold it as like a stone, you know,
- 59:26on the altars over there. Like I can go back
- 59:28to it and remember it. Like I just, I remember
- 59:30that. Um, and you, I can let you talk to cherry
- 59:33and Rodney Lewis and they can tell you all about
- 59:35the things that the Lord did for them when he
- 59:37saved them. uh from the the stuff that they were
- 59:42in it's quite remarkable the turnaround um in
- 59:45their lives but the other thing i'll bring up
- 59:48here and then we'll close out the study for tonight
- 59:50this has been this has been awesome for a first
- 59:53episode in first corinthians 13 um i'd love to
- 59:58say this this isn't always a wedding chapter
- 1:00:01even though we read it at the wedding chapter
- 1:00:04but one of the things He says in the first verse
- 1:00:09and I, Karen Rogers, you say this to me all the
- 1:00:11time. If I speak with the tongues of men and
- 1:00:13of angels, but do not have love, I've become
- 1:00:15a noisy gong or a clanging symbol. How many times
- 1:00:18have we said that Karen? You know, we talk about
- 1:00:20it all the time. He's making a point about love
- 1:00:23and what's what is coming, you know, by this
- 1:00:26Holy Spirit. And when you get down to verse eight,
- 1:00:30he says love never fails, but if there are gifts
- 1:00:33of prophecy, they will be done away. If there
- 1:00:38are tongues, they will cease. If there is knowledge,
- 1:00:42it will be done away. So Paul is stating here,
- 1:00:48something's going to stop at some point. Is that
- 1:00:52the end of human history or is that the end of
- 1:00:54the temple or there's some sort of an end, but
- 1:00:56something's going to stop. When the perfect comes,
- 1:00:59the partial will be done away. Right. So something
- 1:01:03ceases. And he tells you, look, if I have the
- 1:01:06gift of prophecy, and I know all mysteries, and
- 1:01:09I have all knowledge, and if I have all faith,
- 1:01:12that I could remove those mountains, but I don't
- 1:01:14have love, then I am nothing. So obviously, Paul,
- 1:01:18who plays a very important role in the Book of
- 1:01:22Acts, comes to this understanding by the Holy
- 1:01:27Spirit that even with faith that moves mountains
- 1:01:30and that could heal a blind man or a beggar or
- 1:01:33a demon possessed person, that if love is absent,
- 1:01:37then it's meaningless. So I think love is at
- 1:01:40the core of whatever those things are. If you're
- 1:01:43speaking in tongues, like back in those days,
- 1:01:46they were sharing the gospel in Acts chapter
- 1:01:48two, to all of those Jews from around the world
- 1:01:52that had come to the feast of weeks. And then,
- 1:01:56you know, if you're going, what does he say?
- 1:01:58Gold and silver, I don't have. But this I do
- 1:02:02have in the name of Jesus Christ now there's
- 1:02:04take up your bed and walk You know, I think that
- 1:02:07in in their heart It wasn't just about the miracle
- 1:02:10is about delivering this man, you know, like
- 1:02:13they loved this broken man there's something
- 1:02:17to it, you know in regard to Supernatural and
- 1:02:21so I think I can import that same idea into what
- 1:02:26happened to this woman who is still alive and
- 1:02:29just lives right over the mountain over here,
- 1:02:32that there was an outpouring of love. And I think
- 1:02:37that that, you know, she wanted it and she got
- 1:02:40it. And I can't say that's true for everyone.
- 1:02:43I don't know. Again, I wasn't I wasn't the faithful
- 1:02:47guy that day. I just think of someone who is
- 1:02:51like you know, has a little child that has cancer
- 1:02:54and they go to their hospital bed and the whole
- 1:02:57church prays over them and they anoint them with
- 1:03:00oil and the parents have faith and the child
- 1:03:02has faith and then that child dies and we say,
- 1:03:05what, what do we say then? God, you know what
- 1:03:09I'm saying? Like we can't, I don't think we can
- 1:03:12say they just had more faith in the one circumstance
- 1:03:17or the other. Like obviously God chooses. Jesus
- 1:03:23said when they said about the blind man who sinned
- 1:03:26his father or mother he said nobody so that I
- 1:03:28could be glorified all of this is for God's glory
- 1:03:31all of it can we believe and trust God even when
- 1:03:33our child dies even when they turn satanic even
- 1:03:37when which I've had happen in my life even with
- 1:03:40all the bad things, are we still going to trust
- 1:03:43him? Like, Joe, are we still going to trust him?
- 1:03:46And I think this life is a test. It's a test
- 1:03:48of our faith. No matter what happens, are we
- 1:03:51going to go? He takes my life. Well, I trust
- 1:03:53him. Yeah, absolutely. Well, except for Kristen,
- 1:03:56I think all of the rest of us could say that
- 1:03:57these gray hairs mean something by now. So yeah,
- 1:04:00Karen, I agree. That gray hair, too. I just follow
- 1:04:03my hair to say that you didn't have to say that.
- 1:04:07But I do so I don't pull the gray ones out. Yeah.
- 1:04:11Yeah. Well, I want to be bald. This is this is
- 1:04:15going to be great. The Book of Acts is such a
- 1:04:17stellar book. You know, we always talk about
- 1:04:20the love of Jesus and the Holy Spirit. And then,
- 1:04:22you know, let's not forget that the Holy Spirit
- 1:04:24struck down Ananias and Sapphira. Yeah, that
- 1:04:27happens in this book. How fearful we need to
- 1:04:30be of the spirit as well. But also there's, there's
- 1:04:34some funny stuff in the book of acts, like whenever
- 1:04:36they, like in Acts chapter two, these men are
- 1:04:39drunk. You know, I think that's funny. And whenever
- 1:04:41Peter's like, it's only nine in the morning.
- 1:04:44And I'm like, that dude's never been on a college
- 1:04:46campus because that doesn't mean anything. But,
- 1:04:48but, and then also how about whenever there's
- 1:04:52another man named Ananias that Paul goes to or
- 1:04:57Saul of Tarsus at the time goes to and you know,
- 1:05:02God tells him to take him and he's going to baptize
- 1:05:06him and he's going to send him to finish up the
- 1:05:08suffering in his name. And Ananias literally
- 1:05:11says to God, do you know how bad this dude is?
- 1:05:16I mean, that's in the book of Acts. Like that's
- 1:05:18how real these conversations get. Oh, look, I
- 1:05:21think Shelley Sangry just joined us. She's she's
- 1:05:24she's got it on the mute for now. One of the
- 1:05:28funniest things, Rick, is when Peter is let out
- 1:05:31of jail, he goes and knocks and the girl comes
- 1:05:33to the door and she's so excited and so flabbergasted
- 1:05:36that she runs back into the house rather than
- 1:05:38opens the door and let him in. And I think we
- 1:05:42all know someone who's just so giddy and so excitable
- 1:05:45that would do that very thing. It's very relatable.
- 1:05:50Absolutely. Hello there, Shelly. How are you?
- 1:05:52Can you hear me? I don't know if you can hear
- 1:05:54me yet. I can hear you. OK. Oh, I made it. I'm
- 1:05:59sorry. What a day. It's okay. It's okay. And,
- 1:06:03um, you're actually here at the end of episode
- 1:06:05one, but we're going to, so you'll be here for
