- 0:53Welcome in to another exciting episode of the scene.
- 0:56I'm your host, Bubba Starts.
- 0:57And with me today is my brother, Dubzy.
- 0:59Welcome to the show, brother.
- 1:00Hey, Bubba.
- 1:01Thanks for having me, man.
- 1:02Yeah.
- 1:03Long time coming.
- 1:05You played a couple of shows with starts and ends in the last year, and it was finally time
- 1:10to make sure that we get you on the show and talk about your music.
- 1:14So welcome.
- 1:15I'm sorry it took me so long.
- 1:17Oh, that's alright, man.
- 1:18People are busy.
- 1:19Everyone's got stuff to do.
- 1:22And we have no lack of content coming out.
- 1:24So sometimes it just gets, I don't wanna say overwhelming, but it gets to be a lot.
- 1:29That's for sure.
- 1:30That is the biz.
- 1:33For sure.
- 1:33Well, give us a a little bit of backstory, Anya, before we talk about all the new music
- 1:37that you've been pumping out and things that you got coming up.
- 1:40I know you got a big show, in October.
- 1:43So, go ahead and give us a little bit of your backstory, man.
- 1:45The floor is yours.
- 1:46How
- 1:47we doing?
- 1:48My name is Wilson Trent, and a lot of people may know me as that, but you can also call me
- 1:54Dubzy.
- 1:55I am a self taught multi solo musician, a bassist first.
- 2:01I started in a three piece thrash metal band called Insanity Strikes.
- 2:06Shout out to you guys wherever you are.
- 2:09My first gig with them and indeed my first time on stage on bass was at the opening fifteen
- 2:16minutes of one of the eat your face metal feasts at Biggs bar.
- 2:20I believe it was one that Blue Felix headlined.
- 2:23I'll never forget it.
- 2:25So, after parting ways with them, I got together with some good buddies with the
- 2:31intention on starting a punk rock band.
- 2:34I like a lot of genres.
- 2:36I had the name ear infection in mind ever since high school anyway.
- 2:41So, that project was kinda short lived, and I was making meat ends meet delivering DoorDash.
- 2:47This was right around the time of the COVID scare, in 2020.
- 2:52I was out there delivering that food and those groceries helping to do my part.
- 2:57I was also apprenticing to tattoo under my stepfather-in-law and mentor, Steve
- 3:03Butterfield.
- 3:04I knew him first as alien at Alien and Company just off for First Avenue by the railroad
- 3:11tracks.
- 3:12He helped me to become more of a man, to stand up for myself, to work hard, get a bit of a
- 3:18spine, and to perfect more of my graphic art.
- 3:23It was Steve who got me in touch with some guys who were seeking a bass player.
- 3:27Later on, I found myself rehearsing with the, ever eclectic rock house band.
- 3:34And, you know, they they were supportive.
- 3:38It was a stepping stone.
- 3:41And I'll never forget the band camaraderie.
- 3:44And even though I'm not with them now, I still have collabs with some of the people I jammed
- 3:50with back then too.
- 3:54I've got more.
- 3:55Do you wanna interject with a question or two first?
- 3:58Keep going, man.
- 3:59I like it.
- 4:01Awesome.
- 4:02As part of the Rock House band, like I said, I experienced band camaraderie.
- 4:07And even though I'm not with them now, the people I jammed with, the friends I made, the
- 4:11places I played will never forget.
- 4:14We honored the recently passed, at that time, Cosmo at the Terrace Park Bandshell.
- 4:20That is where I played my heart out, and I just happened to also be playing to my future wife,
- 4:31my heart, soul, and muse.
- 4:34And, the dubsy content and passion started when I was in in an alternative band in 2023.
- 4:42I was learning how to use a digital audio workstation for the first time and got
- 4:47captivated by the process.
- 4:49I began to record solo jams, sometimes on my looper, sometimes straight through.
- 4:55I couldn't get enough of these studies.
- 4:57It just kind of exploded in my mind after that.
- 5:01I learned not only what a key in music was, why it was so important, but so much, much more,
- 5:08how they work, all that stuff.
- 5:10Sure.
- 5:11I loved music before, especially rock and metal.
- 5:14But when Dubzy began, I began to live and breathe music.
- 5:20That's great, man.
- 5:21I I I love where you come from.
- 5:24Obviously, a lot of different influences than where I've come from.
- 5:28Right?
- 5:28So that's why it was kinda thrilling to me to have you, come and play some shows with my band
- 5:34starts and ends because you brought a much different kinda take and feel to a lot of,
- 5:39like, classic rock and country stuff that I play.
- 5:42So it really gave us a a different vibe.
- 5:45And yeah, man.
- 5:46I I've I've enjoyed, every show that we've gotten to play together, and I hope we get a
- 5:51chance to do even more of it.
- 5:53Love the sound that you push out with with the Dubsie persona.
- 5:57It's just it's different.
- 5:59Right?
- 6:00And and it hits different than anything.
- 6:02Different.
- 6:03That's right.
- 6:05Well, it's hard to put it into a box.
- 6:07Right?
- 6:07It's hard to define it as a genre I know off the top when, you know, I asked Chad GPT who is
- 6:12Dubsie that it kind of fed it.
- 6:14A lot of psychedelic sounds, which I don't, you know, not hear, especially, like, early
- 6:17psychedelic.
- 6:18Right?
- 6:18Like
- 6:19Oh, yeah.
- 6:20Not not the latest that you think of.
- 6:22Yeah.
- 6:23The early Very
- 6:24was golden.
- 6:27Absolutely.
- 6:29Awesome.
- 6:30Stuff.
- 6:31Yeah.
- 6:31I've got I've got a little more.
- 6:34Dubsie, come from the spooky come for the spooky, stay for the groovy is the new slogan
- 6:40I'm trying out.
- 6:43I like it.
- 6:44I like it, man.
- 6:45That's a great it explains it.
- 6:47And I where your music may go a little spooky and a little dark, you're a very you're a very
- 6:54affable person.
- 6:57Right?
- 6:57You're always smiling.
- 6:58You're always very happy.
- 6:59You've been very cordial, to everyone that, you know, that I've seen you, with or or perform
- 7:05with.
- 7:06And, it's fun to kinda juxtapose that towards some of the music that will be a little heavier
- 7:13and a little, you know, a a little, I would say, aggressive,
- 7:16where in person, you're not aggressive at all, really.
- 7:20I like to I like to, get under people's skin sometimes with my audio.
- 7:26I like to bring to mind things that people know about, but maybe not necessarily have the
- 7:33awareness.
- 7:34We're talking things like mental illnesses, monsters, of course, things that bump in the
- 7:41night, and a lot of other things.
- 7:44I definitely go for a different sound in a lot of my, contents.
- 7:50I I bend genres, usually stick to alternative slash heavy rock.
- 7:58I'm getting better with my singing voice too.
- 8:01Time and time, it just gets so much better.
- 8:04I'm so excited.
- 8:07Well and you have to do it.
- 8:08Right?
- 8:09And and being a bass player in a lot of these kind of punk rock or or, you know, prog rock,
- 8:14you know, kind of bands and different things that you're playing in, you're not always the
- 8:17front man for that.
- 8:19But with Dubz, you're not just the front man.
- 8:22You're also the bass and the guitar, and you're making drums.
- 8:25Win it
- 8:25all, baby.
- 8:26Yeah.
- 8:27And I think that's what's really fun, for me when it comes down to talking about the live
- 8:33show.
- 8:33So how is it you know, you you mentioned the loop pedal.
- 8:37Are you also kind of performing with tracks in the live show and bringing all of these sounds
- 8:42together while still just being one man on stage?
- 8:46Right.
- 8:47So, actually, this ties right into what I've got, prepared for this section.
- 8:52I, I've been prepping hard for this upcoming show.
- 8:55Anyone who's heard Dubsie can probably tell you Halloween's the vibe.
- 9:00My music is general generally about those things.
- 9:04Difficult, abstract, sometimes scary things.
- 9:08I struggle under mental illness, and I've got a crazy good stage stage show planned.
- 9:14It's gonna be great.
- 9:16So a little bit about that, performance is I am preparing video graphics, non AI based, all
- 9:26human made, some borrowed from the public domain with proper credit given.
- 9:32They'll be projected like they were in my last show up against the stage, bathing me in that
- 9:38colorful light.
- 9:40And my sound, I prepared special live, versions of the songs I'm going to play so that not only
- 9:49does the live experience continue to be as variable compared to the recording version, the
- 9:58studio version, but also so that I can have my special guests.
- 10:03I have my lovely wife, Day.
- 10:05I have, Mark Hendrix coming up to join me in my set.
- 10:10And, yes, it may be backing tracks, and I understand there's a stigma about those in some
- 10:17parts.
- 10:18All I'm saying is check it out, man.
- 10:21You won't be disappointed.
- 10:23Well and I think it just kind of depends on what the tracks are, what the show is.
- 10:29I think we're all pretty accepting of what, you know, what that people play the tracks.
- 10:35Right?
- 10:36And that people play the tracks with their vocals on it since the Milli Vanilli days.
- 10:40Right?
- 10:40I don't know if you're even old enough to remember that.
- 10:43I'm trying hard not to break that illusion.
- 10:46I'm recording video here and there of me playing all the different parts just to kinda
- 10:52keep it together, keep it known that I am the authentic source of these tracks, and they are
- 11:00prepared with care for this performance.
- 11:03I think that's really cool.
- 11:05I I and I think it's great that you bring, attention to that as well because a lot of
- 11:10people, won't see the work that goes into that.
- 11:14So being able to capture some of that and then incorporate that into the live show is like,
- 11:20no.
- 11:20This is me recording that track.
- 11:22I just had to do it before because I didn't have time to train someone else necessarily how
- 11:27to do it just like I wanted it done to be here for a live show.
- 11:31So I think that's really cool.
- 11:33And I and I think not just doing it, but bringing attention to it because a lot of
- 11:38people, I think, kinda give in to the stigma where they wanna hide from it, and they wanna
- 11:42pretend like it's not something that it is.
- 11:45I don't think there's anything wrong with
- 11:47it.
- 11:47What the cool thing is to not like or like.
- 11:50You know?
- 11:50I just do me, man.
- 11:53Yes.
- 11:53You do.
- 11:54And that's what I I appreciate about you the most is that you're not trying while it the
- 12:00reason it's so hard to fit your music inside of a box is that you don't try to fit your music
- 12:06inside of any box.
- 12:07Even though you are from the punk rock or heavy metal world, you're not trying to make your
- 12:13sound fit into one or the other.
- 12:15You're gonna you're you're telling everyone, and you're going out and doing it exactly like
- 12:20you like you said.
- 12:21Right?
- 12:21Is that I'm going to mix these things together.
- 12:24I'm going to take all these influences and these different ingredients that are up on the
- 12:28shelf of Dubsie, and I'm gonna pour them all in a pot and see what happens.
- 12:32And each song becomes its own recipe.
- 12:36Absolutely.
- 12:37It does.
- 12:37I look at all of my songs whether they're polished as much as they can be or if they need
- 12:43a little work.
- 12:44I look at them as more of my children.
- 12:47They grow just like people, over time as we gain our knowledge, as we hone our skills, our
- 12:57songs grow.
- 12:58You know as well as I do.
- 13:01Totally.
- 13:01And there's songs, you know, that I've had in my repertoire that I wrote twenty years ago
- 13:07that don't sound like the same song, you know, depending on who I'm playing it with, if I'm
- 13:12playing it solo, if maybe I've ad libbed the lyrics since I wrote it that's different now.
- 13:17And, and I love that you're really bringing something different than just the recorded
- 13:23tracks of the studio versions.
- 13:25I love that you're remaking some of these and making live versions.
- 13:29And even though they're recorded on tracks, that you're getting a live feel for these
- 13:33things, and you're able to bring up special guests.
- 13:35There's just there's so much that goes into all of this that I I think it's really cool that
- 13:40you recorded some of the process and then incorporating that in the show to kinda show
- 13:44people.
- 13:45I think that's just a really cool take on the whole thing.
- 13:49Thank you, man.
- 13:49I really appreciate that.
- 13:52In fact, to build on that, at this Halloween show, there is one song on our set that you'll
- 13:59never hear on streaming services, never hear on a CD.
- 14:04It is only live, and people are gonna go nuts.
- 14:08Love it.
- 14:08Well about that.
- 14:10Let's tell everybody where they can come see that October show one more time and where they
- 14:14can find you.
- 14:16Good good natured on East Eighth Street, Sioux Falls.

- 14:34vibe.
- 14:35They've got something pretty stellar for planned.
- 14:38And the grave itself, who, I believe is connected with good natured in a very nice way.
- 14:45And it's it's $5 at the door, all ages.
- 14:50Music starts at 7PM.
- 14:52And, yeah, it's gonna be a great time, man.
- 14:55October 31, good natured Sioux Falls.
- 14:58Shout out to Shannon.
- 15:01That's awesome, man.
- 15:02Well, it sounds like it's gonna be a great show, some really awesome music, something
- 15:07different for music fans in Sioux Falls.
- 15:09You know, I capitalize a lot off of, you know, the music that I played just being popular in
- 15:14general, But I love that you guys are doing something totally different.
- 15:18Halloween's a great time for that.
- 15:21Tap into that spooky energy, and I hope you guys have a great time at the show.
- 15:26Dubzy, thanks for being part of the starts and ends family, and thanks for being part of the
- 15:30scene, brother.
- 15:32Hey.
- 15:32Thanks for having me, Bubba.
- 15:33Do you mind if I close out with some shout outs?
- 15:36Go ahead, man.
- 15:37Shout them out.
- 15:38Hey.
- 15:38Thank you, man.
