Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Now, from the Star Reynolds Sports Desk, your 93.3 KJR
- 0:04Speaker 1: FM Sports Headlines.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Aloha. Mahalo. Headlines are brought to you by Frostbrew Coors Light.
- 0:11Speaker 2: As cold as the Rockies. The Seahawks, I'm out here
- 0:14Speaker 2: at Seahawks headquarters, the Virginia Mason Athletic Center. Drew Locke's
- 0:18Speaker 2: leading the offense through practices that will resume today. Drew Locke,
- 0:21Speaker 2: not Sam Darnold, going to start Sunday at Arizona. We'll
- 0:24Speaker 2: talk more about what we know about Sam Darnold and
- 0:27Speaker 2: what the players are saying about Drew Locke. taken over
- 0:30Speaker 2: at least for the time being. The Mariners, how about
- 0:33Speaker 2: that easy part of the schedule, huh?
- 0:35Speaker 3: Oh, boy, that is not looking easy. That is not
- 0:38Speaker 3: looking easy.
- 0:39Speaker 2: It hasn't been obvious for weeks. The Mariners have just quit.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Last night they assured they'd have their first losing season
- 0:44Speaker 2: in seven years. Back to the start of Jerry DiPoto's
- 0:46Speaker 2: stated step back to rebuild to a World Series that
- 0:49Speaker 2: still hasn't happened. The M's have quit. Still have ten
- 0:52Speaker 2: games left in the season. Another failure of leadership with
- 0:55Speaker 2: baseball operations there. They have a whole franchise quit. On
- 0:59Speaker 2: a season 2-1 loss at the Subterranean Angels last night.
- 1:02Speaker 2: Logan Gilbert, two runs in six innings and still lost.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Mariners batter struck out nine times and scored just one
- 1:08Speaker 2: run against a team that's been done for 29 games
- 1:10Speaker 2: over 500, the Angels are. Three straight losses for the M's.
- 1:14Speaker 2: Four of the first five on this road trip against
- 1:17Speaker 2: the A's and the Angels. Mariners have lost. Yeah.
- 1:22Speaker 3: I feel bad.
- 1:23Speaker 2: Laugh or cry.
- 1:24Speaker 3: I think that Logan actually says it really well when
- 1:28Speaker 3: we hear from him.
- 1:29Speaker 2: You'll hear from Logan Gilbert here later in the show.
- 1:32Speaker 2: The Milwaukee Brewers with a lower payroll than the Mariners
- 1:34Speaker 2: again by $ 21 million. They won the National League Central,
- 1:38Speaker 2: clinched a division title last night. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, yeah,
- 1:42Speaker 2: here we go, said the league sent people to assess
- 1:44Speaker 2: Climate Pledge Arena and found that they could have it
- 1:46Speaker 2: ready to play an NBA game within five weeks if
- 1:48Speaker 2: they needed to. It's the opposite situation going on in
- 1:51Speaker 2: Las Vegas. They don't have an NBA-ready arena. They don't
- 1:53Speaker 2: have concrete owners. The league's ready to award an expansion franchise, too.
- 1:56Speaker 2: So now the efforts are going to be on settling
- 1:58Speaker 2: Las Vegas' situation. Seattle seems set. All that still means
- 2:03Speaker 2: we don't know when the league's going to announce the
- 2:05Speaker 2: Sonics are coming back. Silver says now at the end
- 2:07Speaker 2: of the year for an announcement. Okay, sure. Enough of
- 2:10Speaker 2: it already. Let's go. Sounders already losing. Left and right,
- 2:15Speaker 2: and now they've lost Paul Rothrock for eight to ten weeks.
- 2:18Speaker 2: That's pretty much the rest of their season.
- 2:20Speaker 3: That stinks.
- 2:20Speaker 2: 2-0 Washington Huskies, barely 2-0. Host Eastern Washington Saturday at
- 2:26Speaker 2: 4.15 right here on KJR. The Washington State Cougars are
- 2:29Speaker 2: hosting Duquesne at the same day Saturday.
- 2:31Speaker 3: Yeah, we need a get-right game, Greg. We need a
- 2:33Speaker 3: get-right game.
- 2:34Speaker 2: That better be it, or there's going to be a
- 2:36Speaker 2: lot wrong.
- 2:36Speaker 3: Well, and Athletic Director John Harlow will join Ian Pernice today,
- 2:40Speaker 3: so we'll hear about what they're expecting. For this three-game homestand.
- 2:44Speaker 2: First home game for the Cougs on Saturday. ESPN's Joe
- 2:47Speaker 2: Buck this morning has agreed to a new contract worth
- 2:49Speaker 2: more than $ 100 million to keep him in the voice
- 2:51Speaker 2: of Monday Night Football into the next decade. The NFL,
- 2:55Speaker 2: the NBA, Major League Baseball, NHL, and MLS issued a
- 2:57Speaker 2: joint statement uniting in an effort to crack down on
- 3:00Speaker 2: betting-related harassment of players, coaches, and their families. I wonder
- 3:04Speaker 2: why that's happening. Because all the leagues are in bed
- 3:07Speaker 2: with the betting and Poly markets and DraftKings. Oh, now
- 3:12Speaker 2: they don't want to get out to the players. WNBA
- 3:16Speaker 2: criticized the NBA for not including them in the NBA statement.
- 3:20Speaker 2: And then Adam Silver said, well, the WNBA needs to
- 3:23Speaker 2: have less divisive leadership. So it goes in pro basketball.
- 3:27Speaker 2: Now on with the Wednesday show. Greg Bell reunited with
- 3:30Speaker 2: Jessamyn McIntyre here on 93.3 KJRFM. I'm at Seahawks headquarters.
- 3:35Speaker 2: Jessamyn's back at Elliott Bay.
- 3:37Speaker 3: Yes, I'm sitting in my darkness retreat all alone. Please
- 3:40Speaker 3: send in your talkbacks. I need voices here.
- 3:44Speaker 2: The talkbacks go to the iHeartRadio app. Download 933KJR or
- 3:49Speaker 2: our website, 933KJR. com. Greg Bell's show with Jessamyn. There is
- 3:53Speaker 2: a red talkback button, a microphone button. You go there,
- 3:56Speaker 2: hit a button for 30 seconds or less, shorter. We'll
- 4:00Speaker 2: do a Talkbacks, we'll play back your voice messages at 1130.
- 4:04Speaker 2: We'll also do the Tacoma Dodge text line 49451. We'll
- 4:08Speaker 2: do those back at 1130. Then we'll have Factor Fiction.
- 4:11Speaker 2: 1135 is our time slot. Every weekday, your chance to
- 4:14Speaker 2: win $ 1, 000 this week from the Lucky Eagle Casino Resort. Remember,
- 4:20Speaker 2: as many times as you play, you get a chance
- 4:21Speaker 2: to win $ 10, 000 at the end of the year. But, yeah, $ 1, 000.
- 4:23Speaker 2: How do we do it? I want $ 1, 000.
- 4:28Speaker 3: Give me $ 1, 000. I picked the last two days because
- 4:30Speaker 3: I'm a part of this show. And even though I
- 4:32Speaker 3: had the best time with the captain and Action Jackson,
- 4:36Speaker 3: I did miss you. So I picked the last two days. Yes.
- 4:39Speaker 2: Appreciate that. How did we do last? I know Army
- 4:42Speaker 2: just at the last play of the game lost. And
- 4:44Speaker 2: they were on the under and then they lost the
- 4:47Speaker 2: game outright. And then Ohio State, we got that one
- 4:52Speaker 2: right anyway.
- 4:53Speaker 3: Yeah, I hedged on one of mine last week because
- 4:57Speaker 3: I went against the Jets, but they won, so it
- 5:00Speaker 3: was a win-win for me. But yes, you were fiction,
- 5:05Speaker 3: I was fiction, and then you were fact, I was fact,
- 5:09Speaker 3: and Travis picked on Friday, and he was fact.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Oh, three and two.
- 5:14Speaker 3: We're three and two. We're three and two. And actually,
- 5:17Speaker 3: we are among the top. I don't know how they
- 5:19Speaker 3: do their percentages and everything, but we are... tied with
- 5:24Speaker 3: the morning show right now at three and two.
- 5:26Speaker 2: Okay. So low bar and we're at least at it. Okay.
- 5:29Speaker 3: And you have a pick today.
- 5:31Speaker 2: I do. At 1135, we'll do that.
- 5:33Speaker 3: I'm so curious as to what it'll be.
- 5:35Speaker 2: Your chance to win a thousand dollars. It's going to
- 5:37Speaker 2: be local. I'll tell you that.
- 5:38Speaker 3: Oh, I like that.
- 5:40Speaker 2: Okay. We'll leave it at that. We're going to also
- 5:43Speaker 2: talk to you in here. As Jessamyn alluded to Logan Gilbert,
- 5:46Speaker 2: speaking to the Mariners failures in this most disappointing, frustrating season,
- 5:50Speaker 2: franchise history. The Sam Donald injury situation, what I know,
- 5:54Speaker 2: what I've learned, how the Seahawks players view it. Heading
- 5:58Speaker 2: into the game on Sunday at Arizona, Drew Locke starting
- 6:00Speaker 2: his first game for Seattle since 2023. At 11 o'clock,
- 6:05Speaker 2: our first talk of the season with Jory Epstein. She's
- 6:07Speaker 2: the NFL senior writer for Yahoo Sports. She broke the
- 6:09Speaker 2: story last month that this is Seahawks linebacker DeMarcus Lawrence's
- 6:12Speaker 2: final season. She was at the Seahawks Patriots NFL opener
- 6:16Speaker 2: last week, and she was in Kansas City Monday for
- 6:18Speaker 2: Kenneth Walker's Sterling debut for the Chiefs in their win
- 6:21Speaker 2: over Denver. What do we all think of that?
- 6:23Speaker 3: My goodness, it scared me. It had me shaking in
- 6:25Speaker 3: my boots because I was up by 40 points in
- 6:28Speaker 3: my fantasy league, and my opponent, sales guy Will over here,
- 6:32Speaker 3: I call him Good Will Hunting because he's got the hair,
- 6:34Speaker 3: and that's all he had left to play. I had
- 6:39Speaker 3: a 99% chance of winning, and then I looked, and
- 6:41Speaker 3: I'm like, uh-oh.
- 6:43Speaker 2: Oh, no. Oh, no.
- 6:44Speaker 3: Yes, bartender, give me another drink, please.
- 6:48Speaker 4: I was.
- 6:48Speaker 2: I'm reading people are freaking out. Did the Seahawks make
- 6:51Speaker 2: a mistake with letting Kenneth Walker go? We knew this
- 6:55Speaker 2: was going to happen in Kansas City, right? Andy Reid
- 6:58Speaker 2: throws to his running backs. He gives the running backs
- 7:01Speaker 2: the ball. 68% of the snaps. Kansas City had 67
- 7:05Speaker 2: plays Monday night. 29 of them, almost, I mean, 40-some
- 7:09Speaker 2: percent of them were to Kenneth Walker. He had 23
- 7:11Speaker 2: carries for the 173 yards. And he had six pass targets,
- 7:16Speaker 2: got three of them. I want to talk to Jory,
- 7:19Speaker 2: who was in Arrowhead Stadium on Monday night, and Jory's
- 7:21Speaker 2: going to answer whether, can Andy Reid continue to use
- 7:24Speaker 2: Kenneth Walker at that clip for the entire season? We
- 7:28Speaker 2: know his history in Seattle and his injuries.
- 7:30Speaker 3: Yeah, I was going to say, during the Super Bowl,
- 7:32Speaker 3: my dad, football coach dad, Coach Mack, was like, they
- 7:37Speaker 3: cannot do this. They can do it for this one game,
- 7:39Speaker 3: but there is no way they can use him this way.
- 7:41Speaker 3: It was after Zach Charbonnet got hurt, so that was
- 7:44Speaker 3: their only... you know, reason to use him as strongly
- 7:49Speaker 3: as they did. However, he succeeded, but that is not sustainable,
- 7:53Speaker 3: is what Coach Mack told me. And I said, I agree,
- 7:56Speaker 3: but he just won the MVP of the Super Bowl.
- 7:58Speaker 3: So I can't see him sustaining that level of hits,
- 8:04Speaker 3: you know, even hits throughout an entire season. So it
- 8:07Speaker 3: will be interesting.
- 8:09Speaker 2: We'll talk to Jory about that. She was in the
- 8:10Speaker 2: Chiefs locker room after the game Monday night. 11.30, we'll
- 8:13Speaker 2: read back your texts, like I said, and your talkbacks
- 8:16Speaker 2: with the Tacoma Dodge text line at 11.30, 494-51, 11.35,
- 8:20Speaker 2: Factor Fiction. And Ian Furness will join me. He's here
- 8:24Speaker 2: at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center to talk about what's
- 8:26Speaker 2: on his show today. First question for the text line, 494-51,
- 8:32Speaker 2: are you in sky is falling mode about Sam Darnold's injury?
- 8:35Speaker 2: I know there's been conflicting reports. He might go up
- 8:38Speaker 2: to six weeks, as Mike Florio said on Sunday Night Football.
- 8:42Speaker 2: That's what prompted the Seahawks to make an unusual move
- 8:44Speaker 2: of a spokesman coming out and talking. I've been covering
- 8:48Speaker 2: his team for 20-some years, and that might be the
- 8:50Speaker 2: third or fourth time Dave Pearson has read a statement
- 8:53Speaker 2: on behalf of the entire team with an issue. It
- 8:56Speaker 2: usually has the coach speak for himself, but in this case,
- 9:00Speaker 2: they just said, here's the deal. It's not a long-term injury.
- 9:03Speaker 2: It's not related to his hip. It's a very unique
- 9:06Speaker 2: soft tissue injury. It's around the hip area, and then
- 9:09Speaker 2: it's later been determined it's the gluteal, his rear end,
- 9:13Speaker 2: his butt hurts.
- 9:15Speaker 3: Dude, the term butt hurt has been thrown around a
- 9:17Speaker 3: little too much the past couple days. I love Sam Donald,
- 9:21Speaker 3: and he's not butt hurt. What I did like hearing, though,
- 9:25Speaker 3: was soft tissue rather than ligaments, rather than bone, rather
- 9:30Speaker 3: than a fracture. Exactly. and I think they're protecting him,
- 9:33Speaker 3: and Drew showed up and showed out too. So it's
- 9:36Speaker 3: not like a huge concern.
- 9:38Speaker 2: Exactly, and we'll talk about all of that. We'll talk
- 9:40Speaker 2: about what they haven't done since Darnold got hurt to
- 9:43Speaker 2: suggest this isn't going to be a long-term injury, and
- 9:46Speaker 2: you'll hear from Byron Murphy and what the players are
- 9:48Speaker 2: thinking about Drew Locke taking over. It is interesting that
- 9:53Speaker 2: here's a Super Bowl champion team who's got all these
- 9:57Speaker 2: cards in order. They've got a number one ranked defense.
- 9:59Speaker 2: They've got Sam Darnold who's so much more comfortable than
- 10:02Speaker 2: he was this time last year and working on the
- 10:04Speaker 2: offseason with Rashid Shaheed and a Super Bowl champion and
- 10:08Speaker 2: a pitch man and finally first time he's had back-to-back
- 10:12Speaker 2: years as a number one starter unquestioned, undisputed starter on
- 10:16Speaker 2: the same team since his first two years in the
- 10:17Speaker 2: league with the Jets and then in Four plays into
- 10:21Speaker 2: the season, five plays into the season, he's out. That
- 10:24Speaker 2: is a challenge for Sam Darnold. It's obviously a challenge
- 10:27Speaker 2: for Brian Fleury, the new offensive coordinator. But Drew Locke, look,
- 10:33Speaker 2: this is the Trevoin Boykin experience. Oh, boy. Coming back
- 10:37Speaker 2: to roost. Remember him? Yeah.
- 10:39Speaker 3: I mean, that was a throwback, Greg, but yes.
- 10:41Speaker 2: It's about 10 years ago now. What? Nine, 10 years ago.
- 10:44Speaker 2: Remember when they signed Trevoin Boykin as an undrafted rookie
- 10:48Speaker 2: from TCU and Russell Wilson had never missed a meaningful snap.
- 10:52Speaker 2: He just never missed a game. He never missed snaps.
- 10:54Speaker 2: He never missed drives. He never got hurt. So they didn't–
- 10:57Speaker 2: why do we need a dependable veteran backup? We'll just
- 11:01Speaker 2: do this project. This undrafted rookie will be our number two,
- 11:04Speaker 2: Trevon Boykin. And sure enough, Ndamukongsu lands on Russell Wilson's
- 11:09Speaker 2: ankle in the first game. He miraculously– Wilson plays through that.
- 11:14Speaker 2: And then in the San Francisco game, his knee on
- 11:17Speaker 2: top of his ankle– And by all rights, he shouldn't
- 11:20Speaker 2: have been playing for a month. Anyway, the number two
- 11:22Speaker 2: quarterback for the first time had to play in the
- 11:24Speaker 2: middle of a game in the Russell Wilson era. And
- 11:27Speaker 2: Pete Carroll turned and looked on his bench and it
- 11:29Speaker 2: was Trevoin Boykin. And that was a disaster. And that
- 11:33Speaker 2: was part of the reason that Russell Wilson had physical
- 11:38Speaker 2: therapists sleeping at his house and waking up every hour
- 11:41Speaker 2: on the hour to get physical PT treatment. and get
- 11:45Speaker 2: his knee and ankle in shape to play the very
- 11:47Speaker 2: next time they run out on the field was because
- 11:49Speaker 2: of Trevoin Boykin and how it scared the hell out
- 11:52Speaker 2: of John Schneider. And since that time, John Schneider has
- 11:56Speaker 2: ensured that he has had a backup quarterback who has
- 11:58Speaker 2: starting experience in the NFL. Remember, he traded with the
- 12:02Speaker 2: then Cardinals to get Brett Hundley, the former part-time, one-time
- 12:06Speaker 2: starter for the Green Bay Packers. It was right after
- 12:08Speaker 2: that season that he traded for Brett Hundley. Then he
- 12:11Speaker 2: got Geno Smith. When nobody else wanted Geno Smith, He
- 12:14Speaker 2: signed him from the Chargers to be Wilson's backup. They
- 12:18Speaker 2: trade Wilson at Denver. Geno Smith gets a job. And
- 12:20Speaker 2: who was part of that trade with Denver? John Schneider
- 12:22Speaker 2: insisted that Drew Locke was part of the Russell Wilson trade. Remember,
- 12:27Speaker 2: they got all the bevy of first and second round
- 12:29Speaker 2: draft picks, four of them. But they also got three veterans.
- 12:32Speaker 2: And one of those veterans was Drew Locke, who had
- 12:34Speaker 2: started his first couple years in Denver. He started as
- 12:37Speaker 2: a rookie and led the NFL in interceptions with 15.
- 12:40Speaker 2: He started again his second year, and then by his
- 12:42Speaker 2: third year, he lost his first three games and he
- 12:43Speaker 2: lost his job. But the point is he had done it.
- 12:47Speaker 2: And Snyder had learned his lesson in a Trevoin Boykin
- 12:50Speaker 2: situation of we ain't getting in this situation. If our
- 12:54Speaker 2: starting quarterback goes down, I want a guy who's done this,
- 12:57Speaker 2: who's gone through game weeks, who's read defenses, who's been
- 13:00Speaker 2: around the league, and now he does. And he spent
- 13:03Speaker 2: a two-year contract on Locke, and we all said, wow,
- 13:06Speaker 2: two years. That was to be able to keep him
- 13:08Speaker 2: so that Locke wouldn't wander away and try to find
- 13:11Speaker 2: a starting job after that.
- 13:12Speaker 3: I think that surprised some people, Greg. Did it surprise you?
- 13:14Speaker 2: It did. It did. And I remember thinking at the time,
- 13:16Speaker 2: that's unusual for a veteran backup to get a two-year deal.
- 13:20Speaker 2: And it's $ 4 million. He's getting paid handsomely to pay backup.
- 13:23Speaker 2: This is why. It did surprise me, but it was
- 13:25Speaker 2: to keep him here from leaving to try to find
- 13:27Speaker 2: another starting job at the end of last year. And
- 13:30Speaker 2: now here they are with Drew Locke. The last two
- 13:33Speaker 2: meaningful games that Drew Locke has played for the Seahawks,
- 13:36Speaker 2: he's won them both. Every Monday night game in December
- 13:39Speaker 2: of 23, he came in. He had to start because
- 13:42Speaker 2: Geno Smith was injured. The defending Super Bowl champion Eagles
- 13:46Speaker 2: come into Seattle. Drew Locke beat him with a two-minute
- 13:48Speaker 2: drive at the end of the game. Then in 24,
- 13:52Speaker 2: his contract ended, and he went to the Giants. He
- 13:55Speaker 2: was supposed to be a backup to Daniel Jones. Daniel
- 13:57Speaker 2: Jones gets hurt. Drew Locke starts four or five games
- 14:00Speaker 2: at the end of that season. Doesn't go well. The
- 14:02Speaker 2: Giants let his contract lapse. That's when John Schneider picked
- 14:06Speaker 2: him up again for a second Seattle go-around on a
- 14:09Speaker 2: two-year deal, and that's the contract he's under now starting
- 14:11Speaker 2: on Sunday at Arizona. Then you saw, of course, we
- 14:14Speaker 2: saw what he did coming in after the fifth play
- 14:17Speaker 2: against the Patriots last week. So, yeah, the Seahawks have
- 14:21Speaker 2: planned for this, and you don't think about what they're
- 14:26Speaker 2: doing with a backup quarterback until you need one, and
- 14:29Speaker 2: they've got one that they can trust. in Drew Locke,
- 14:31Speaker 2: and they're a lot better off than they were with
- 14:33Speaker 2: Trevoin Boykin, we can say that for sure.
- 14:36Speaker 3: I mean, it is interesting, and I love the historical
- 14:39Speaker 3: context that you put it in, because I wouldn't have
- 14:42Speaker 3: thought about it that way, and I don't think a
- 14:43Speaker 3: lot of fans do either, but knowing that that was
- 14:46Speaker 3: your backup situation, just depending on Russell Wilson's longevity and
- 14:50Speaker 3: his ability to bounce back, that is a completely.
- 14:54Speaker 3: Oh, shoot situation. And this is where we are. And
- 14:58Speaker 3: I'm wondering from your perspective, why do you think that
- 15:03Speaker 3: Drew decided to stay too? Because he could have gone.
- 15:07Speaker 3: He could have gone elsewhere. So why do you think
- 15:09Speaker 3: that Seattle was important for him?
- 15:11Speaker 2: I'm glad you asked that. I talked to him at
- 15:12Speaker 2: the Super Bowl about that. And he said, you know what, Greg?
- 15:16Speaker 2: It was just he and I at the San Jose
- 15:18Speaker 2: Convention Center a couple of days before the game. And
- 15:21Speaker 2: he said, you know what? They called me and signed
- 15:23Speaker 2: me about the time my father died last spring.
- 15:27Speaker 3: I did not know that.
- 15:28Speaker 2: No, he did. He said he was stunned. The whole
- 15:31Speaker 2: family was stunned. He was a very successful businessman in
- 15:35Speaker 2: the Kansas City area, Overland Park, Kansas. And he died suddenly.
- 15:39Speaker 2: And Drew Locke, this was the spring of 2025, and
- 15:43Speaker 2: Locke was unsigned at the time. And John Schneider called
- 15:46Speaker 2: him and said, we'd love to have you back. We'll
- 15:48Speaker 2: offer you a two-year deal. And he said, Greg, because
- 15:51Speaker 2: I loved Seattle, I loved the Seahawks culture. I loved
- 15:54Speaker 2: what the locker room's like there. I loved the staff,
- 15:56Speaker 2: the people. I was so comfortable there. I'm coming back.
- 16:00Speaker 2: And he said it was at a time in his
- 16:01Speaker 2: life with his father having just passed away that he
- 16:03Speaker 2: didn't want unknowns. He didn't want something he couldn't depend on.
- 16:06Speaker 2: He didn't want someplace he would be uncomfortable in starting
- 16:08Speaker 2: over with. So he went back to Seattle then. And
- 16:11Speaker 2: he signed not many days after his father died and
- 16:15Speaker 2: signed back with the Seahawks. And that's why he's here.
- 16:17Speaker 2: And then I talked to him at the end of,
- 16:19Speaker 2: after the Super Bowl. I made a whole little celebration
- 16:21Speaker 2: and we spent all that, you and I spent all
- 16:22Speaker 2: that time in the locker room in Santa Clara. And
- 16:25Speaker 2: as the celebration was winding down, I went up to
- 16:27Speaker 2: him and I say, that was a pretty good choice.
- 16:29Speaker 2: He goes, great. He said, I said, well, what's next?
- 16:32Speaker 2: And he says, well, I got another year on my contract.
- 16:34Speaker 2: I want to play. That's what he said. He's 29 now.
- 16:37Speaker 2: He said, but I love it here. And I'm so
- 16:39Speaker 2: glad I have a two-year deal. And so here he is.
- 16:42Speaker 3: There's just something about this place, man. I just look
- 16:46Speaker 3: at John Schneider, and you and I know him well
- 16:48Speaker 3: enough now throughout the years that he's been here. I
- 16:52Speaker 3: feel like he is a human. He's not a suit.
- 16:56Speaker 3: And I think that that adds to, you know, everything
- 17:00Speaker 3: trickles down, right? This is the kind of facility that
- 17:03Speaker 3: he is now the sole head of. You know, it
- 17:06Speaker 3: used to be him and Pete, and there's debate about
- 17:09Speaker 3: who was doing what. when it came to decision-making, but
- 17:13Speaker 3: John is the perfect person to have as a leader.
- 17:16Speaker 3: And I think that it permeates throughout the facility.
- 17:19Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 17:20Speaker 2: It's his tone, isn't it? And then he picks Mike
- 17:23Speaker 2: McDonald and Mike McDonald's establishes the culture in the locker room.
- 17:27Speaker 2: So four, nine, four, five, one on the Tacoma Dodge
- 17:29Speaker 2: text line, your panic feeling with Sam Donald out. And
- 17:32Speaker 2: usually a starting court. We talk about this all the time.
- 17:34Speaker 2: You lose your starting quarterback. You're done in this league. Well,
- 17:37Speaker 2: They have the number one defense in the NFL, a
- 17:39Speaker 2: team that just gave up 10 points to the AFC
- 17:41Speaker 2: champions in the opener, and now they're going into Arizona
- 17:44Speaker 2: with Drew Locke, not exactly feeling like they're done. In fact,
- 17:47Speaker 2: just the opposite. But how do you feel? Because this
- 17:50Speaker 2: is usually the death knell for any team, to lose
- 17:52Speaker 2: their quarterback in multiple weeks. We'll see. It's still early
- 17:56Speaker 2: enough in the season. It's at a point in the
- 17:57Speaker 2: schedule where you could say, okay, they're at Arizona. I mean,
- 18:00Speaker 2: they should beat Jacoby Percet with Drew Locke. Let's face it.
- 18:03Speaker 2: With the defense they have, they should beat Jacoby Percet.
- 18:06Speaker 2: I was mentioning to Chuck this morning, one of the
- 18:08Speaker 2: many measures on how the Seahawks have become so much
- 18:11Speaker 2: better under Mike McDonald the last two years. If you
- 18:13Speaker 2: think about it, Jess, when you remember all the games,
- 18:16Speaker 2: the Cardinals would start Josh McCown or Chase Daniel or
- 18:20Speaker 2: whoever the hell their random journeyman backup quarterback would be,
- 18:23Speaker 2: and they'd beat them. Especially coming here to Seattle, I
- 18:26Speaker 2: can remember Josh McCown beating the Seahawks. And you're like,
- 18:29Speaker 2: how did that happen? That doesn't happen anymore. The games
- 18:32Speaker 2: the Seahawks should win, they win. Think about it. They
- 18:36Speaker 2: win because of their defense. They win and beat quarterbacks
- 18:41Speaker 2: they should beat. And Sunday they should beat Jacoby Brissett,
- 18:44Speaker 2: even with Drew Locke as a quarterback. Then they go
- 18:46Speaker 2: to Washington in week three. The commanders coming off a
- 18:50Speaker 2: non-playoff season would be a tougher test, you would think,
- 18:54Speaker 2: than Arizona, even though the Cardinals just beat the Chargers.
- 18:57Speaker 2: So that's my first question on the text line, 49451.
- 19:00Speaker 2: How worried are you? And then the second question for
- 19:03Speaker 2: the text line, and I have to ask it because
- 19:05Speaker 2: I brought it up last week. Do you think the
- 19:07Speaker 2: Mariners are quitting so they can get their leaders fired? Oh, no.
- 19:12Speaker 3: No professional athlete does that.
- 19:14Speaker 2: You wouldn't think so, but you know what, Jessamyn? In
- 19:16Speaker 2: Major League Baseball, the contracts are guaranteed. You can't do
- 19:19Speaker 2: that in the NFL because they'll cut your butt. In
- 19:21Speaker 2: Major League Baseball, Mariners have to pay those players. Josh
- 19:24Speaker 2: Naylor's getting his $ 90 million whether they go to the
- 19:26Speaker 2: playoffs or not. Julia Rodriguez is getting paid $ 200 million
- 19:30Speaker 2: whether he bats $ 200 or $ 300. Kyle Raleigh? Down the line,
- 19:35Speaker 2: those guys have guaranteed contracts. So they're going to be
- 19:38Speaker 2: here longer than the guys leading them are. That's guaranteed.
- 19:41Speaker 3: There's no way in heck that any professional athlete quits.
- 19:45Speaker 2: They're quitting. No, they're not. They've lost. to the A's
- 19:50Speaker 2: and the Angels with their season in the balance, their
- 19:53Speaker 2: last possible hope of contending. They've lost four out of
- 19:57Speaker 2: five to the A's and the Angels. All right.
- 20:00Speaker 3: Well, when we hear from Logan Wilson or Logan Gilbert,
- 20:03Speaker 3: I'm sorry, that you'll hear in his voice, that's not
- 20:06Speaker 3: a quitter. It's just not. I just don't think they're
- 20:10Speaker 3: doing that.
- 20:11Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 20:12Speaker 3: You think there's a mutiny?
- 20:14Speaker 2: I think they're not exactly. Let me put it this way.
- 20:17Speaker 2: It sure looks like they're not in any hurry to
- 20:21Speaker 2: make the management or anybody think good about 2027, does it?
- 20:25Speaker 2: I mean, I already think that Dan Wilson is going
- 20:27Speaker 2: to say, you don't have to fire me. I'm gone.
- 20:29Speaker 2: I'm done with this.
- 20:29Speaker 3: Yeah, you've predicted that.
- 20:31Speaker 2: But the question is, Jerry DiPoto and Justin Hollander, are
- 20:35Speaker 2: the Mariners planning to get them fired? Because this is
- 20:37Speaker 2: so bad. I mean, this is one of the– Joel
- 20:40Speaker 2: Cian said on our station that this is one of
- 20:43Speaker 2: the worst, maybe the worst, most disappointing season in 25
- 20:46Speaker 2: years around baseball, not just in Seattle.
- 20:49Speaker 3: Which is actually really, really sad because we've seen some
- 20:52Speaker 3: disappointing seasons here.
- 20:55Speaker 2: This is a city that's watched 100 lost seasons, and
- 20:58Speaker 2: they aren't as bad as this one. Are they playing
- 21:00Speaker 2: to not just get Dan Wilson fired because he's not
- 21:03Speaker 2: coming back because he's going to say see you. Are
- 21:05Speaker 2: they planning to get Jerry DiPoto and Justin Hollander fired?
- 21:08Speaker 2: That's how bad this is. But would John Stanton and
- 21:12Speaker 2: the 20-plus owners who own the Mariners do that, knowing
- 21:16Speaker 2: that they're drawing $ 37, 000 and the hot dogs from heaven
- 21:18Speaker 2: and the bobbleheads and the fireworks and all of it?
- 21:20Speaker 2: That works.
- 21:21Speaker 3: Which is separate from baseball operations.
- 21:24Speaker 2: The baseball operation is broken, and the business model of
- 21:27Speaker 2: the Mariners is flourishing. That's the rub.
- 21:30Speaker 3: And we have to give them credit for that.
- 21:33Speaker 2: That's just, yeah.
- 21:35Speaker 3: You go to the ballpark and you have a good time.
- 21:38Speaker 2: I totally agree with you, Jess.
- 21:40Speaker 3: I'm not defending the lack of winning. But you do
- 21:42Speaker 3: have a good ballpark experience.
- 21:44Speaker 2: But your baseball operations are broken. And the president of
- 21:47Speaker 2: baseball operations has been here 11 years and they've been
- 21:49Speaker 2: to the playoffs twice. 49451 at the Coma Dodge text line.
- 21:53Speaker 2: Those two questions I posed first. Up next... Sam Darnold's injury.
- 21:58Speaker 2: What we know, what the Seahawks players are saying about
- 22:00Speaker 2: Drew Locke starting Sunday at Arizona. That's coming up at
- 22:03Speaker 2: the Virginia Mason Athletic Center. Glad to be back on
- 22:05Speaker 2: 93.3 KJRFM. Hi, welcome back. Virginia Mason Athletic Center Seahawks headquarters.
- 22:21Speaker 2: Why are we here? Because they're getting back into a
- 22:23Speaker 2: regular season. Season Mo, Greg Bell, and Jessamyn McIntyre with
- 22:27Speaker 2: you as we are every weekday, 10 a.m. to noon
- 22:29Speaker 2: here on 93.3 KJRFM. We're back to normal. The Wednesday
- 22:33Speaker 2: game last week threw everything out of kilter, but now
- 22:35Speaker 2: with the Sunday game, they were off this weekend. They
- 22:38Speaker 2: had what they call bonus practice on Monday. They were
- 22:41Speaker 2: off yesterday. That's the normal Sunday game week day off,
- 22:45Speaker 2: Tuesday in the NFL. And then today, regular schedule, Wednesday
- 22:49Speaker 2: press conference with Mike McDonald, which is why I'm here.
- 22:52Speaker 2: Cover that as soon as our show's over. while Ian Furness'
- 22:55Speaker 2: show takes over, and then practice this afternoon, the first
- 22:59Speaker 2: injury report of the game week before they play Arizona
- 23:04Speaker 2: on Sunday. And on that report, you're going to see
- 23:06Speaker 2: Sam Donald is not participating with an injury that they'll
- 23:09Speaker 2: probably put as glute. You're going to see Durlock as
- 23:14Speaker 2: the starting quarterback with the number one offense today and
- 23:18Speaker 2: at least going forward through this week, probably next in
- 23:21Speaker 2: an all-realistically game. Maybe week four he could come back,
- 23:25Speaker 2: potentially play against the Chargers in week four, maybe. And
- 23:29Speaker 2: that's a big maybe, but that's on the optimistic side.
- 23:32Speaker 2: But it looks like he's going to miss one or
- 23:33Speaker 2: two games in addition to the all but five plays
- 23:37Speaker 2: that he missed in the New England game. So what
- 23:39Speaker 2: we know so far is that it's not a long-term injury,
- 23:41Speaker 2: the Seahawks say. Why do we know that? Not only
- 23:43Speaker 2: did the Seahawks spokesman say it the other day, they
- 23:46Speaker 2: haven't put him on injured reserve. If they thought this
- 23:49Speaker 2: was a longer-term issue, NFL teams, including John Schneider and
- 23:52Speaker 2: the Seahawks, They don't just put guys on 53 that
- 23:55Speaker 2: can't do anything for four weeks. They put them on
- 23:58Speaker 2: injured reserve so they can have another player on the
- 24:00Speaker 2: active 53 to contribute. So the fact that Darnold has
- 24:03Speaker 2: not gone on IR, which would mean a minimum of
- 24:06Speaker 2: four weeks he would be out by league rule, suggests
- 24:10Speaker 2: that they think, strongly suggests, that he's going to be
- 24:12Speaker 2: back before those four weeks. The other tell is that
- 24:17Speaker 2: now they just have Drew Locke and still unproven Jalen Milrow,
- 24:21Speaker 2: the second-year quarterback out of Alabama. Those are the only
- 24:24Speaker 2: two quarterbacks on the roster. If they thought Darnold was
- 24:26Speaker 2: going to be out long term, you would probably see
- 24:28Speaker 2: them at least try out some veteran. Now, there aren't
- 24:31Speaker 2: a lot of veteran quarterbacks worth playing available in week
- 24:34Speaker 2: two of an NFL season, yes. But they would be
- 24:37Speaker 2: trying out somebody, whether it was an undrafted rookie that
- 24:41Speaker 2: could be a third quarterback, what have you, to run
- 24:44Speaker 2: the scout team. But they haven't done that yet either.
- 24:48Speaker 2: They had three tryouts yesterday of free agents. All of
- 24:51Speaker 2: them were not quarterbacks. So it was actually a couple
- 24:55Speaker 2: defensive backs and linebackers. So the signs are that they
- 25:00Speaker 2: think it's going to be fewer than four weeks. Fewer
- 25:04Speaker 2: if you can count, less if you can't. I tell
- 25:06Speaker 2: my kids that all the time. Air, water, less. If
- 25:09Speaker 2: you can count individual units, fewer.
- 25:13Speaker 3: That's a further, farther conversation for me.
- 25:16Speaker 2: Exactly. So the fact that they haven't done either of
- 25:19Speaker 2: that strongly suggests the Seahawks think it's going to be
- 25:21Speaker 2: fewer than four weeks. that Sam Donald is out. But
- 25:23Speaker 2: in the meantime, the Seahawks are really confident in Drew Locke.
- 25:28Speaker 2: I mentioned the last two times that he has had
- 25:30Speaker 2: played meaningful snaps for this team. He's won them both.
- 25:33Speaker 2: He beat the defending champion Eagles in the end of
- 25:36Speaker 2: the 2023 season. He beats the Patriots on Wednesday night.
- 25:40Speaker 2: Now he's starting on Sunday in Arizona. This is what
- 25:43Speaker 2: Byron Murphy said this week. He was representative of what
- 25:46Speaker 2: the entire team feels about Drew Locke and not Sam
- 25:48Speaker 2: Darnold starting Sunday. With the, uh, with the offense going
- 25:51Speaker 2: through some adversity, losing Sam, not knowing when he's going
- 25:54Speaker 2: to be back.
- 25:55Speaker 5: Does that add any more responsibility for you guys on
- 25:57Speaker 5: the defensive side of the ball?
- 25:59Speaker 2: Motivate you guys to play even better to help out
- 26:01Speaker 2: your offense?
- 26:02Speaker 6: Uh, nah, I feel like, you know, it's the same.
- 26:05Speaker 6: I feel like Drew's preparing, you know, just like, just
- 26:07Speaker 6: like Sam. So, uh, We're going to go into this
- 26:10Speaker 6: week with the same mindset, and that's to win. I
- 26:15Speaker 6: feel like we're going to be prepared. I feel like
- 26:17Speaker 6: Drew's going to be prepared, even the offense, and we're
- 26:19Speaker 6: going to be ready. We're going to be ready to go.
- 26:22Speaker 2: Was Byron Murphy, the defensive tackle, really speaking for the
- 26:25Speaker 2: tone of the entire team about Drew Locke coming in? Normally,
- 26:28Speaker 2: like we said, backup quarterbacks coming in to start, and
- 26:31Speaker 2: you're like, oh, man, sky's falling. That's not the feeling
- 26:35Speaker 2: out here.
- 26:35Speaker 3: No, it isn't. I don't even feel that way. As a,
- 26:39Speaker 3: you know, if I'm talking from a fan.
- 26:42Speaker 2: 49451, the Tacoma Dodge text line doesn't sound like it
- 26:44Speaker 2: is either. That's what they're saying. They're saying no panic.
- 26:49Speaker 2: They said that Drew Locke can ball. 253, Drew is
- 26:53Speaker 2: a competent quarterback, especially as a number two, is more
- 26:55Speaker 2: than capable of game managing the offense, which is what
- 26:58Speaker 2: they need with that defense. No worries going forward. Of course,
- 27:02Speaker 2: Drew Locke's number one task on Sunday at Arizona, and
- 27:05Speaker 2: if he plays the next Sunday at Washington, don't turn
- 27:08Speaker 2: the ball over. They have a defense that should beat
- 27:11Speaker 2: Jacoby Brissett. They have a defense that should beat the
- 27:13Speaker 2: Commanders on the road. They have a defense that did
- 27:15Speaker 2: beat the Commanders on the road last year, like 34-10.
- 27:18Speaker 2: So don't turn the ball over. Don't give the Cardinals,
- 27:22Speaker 2: after the Cardinals feeling good about themselves coming home for
- 27:25Speaker 2: their home opener after walloping the Chargers out of nowhere.
- 27:29Speaker 3: Yeah, what was that? Did somebody have factor fiction.
- 27:32Speaker 2: For that one? What was the Harbaugh team there? Somebody
- 27:35Speaker 2: did pick factor fiction for that. I think it was
- 27:37Speaker 2: on a show. I can't remember which show.
- 27:38Speaker 3: Did they win?
- 27:40Speaker 2: No, I think.
- 27:40Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 27:41Speaker 3: Yeah. Cause they're two and three right now.
- 27:43Speaker 2: Yeah. Charger blood. But I mean, I don't care. Jacoby Brissett,
- 27:48Speaker 2: the Seahawks should be just don't give the Cardinals the
- 27:51Speaker 2: ball on the minus side of the 50 yard line.
- 27:54Speaker 2: Don't give them the ball short enough that they can
- 27:56Speaker 2: get points without driving on the Seahawks offense and you'll win.
- 28:00Speaker 2: That's how I view the Seahawks and the Cardinals on Sunday.
- 28:04Speaker 2: And that's the confidence that Brian Murphy is talking about
- 28:07Speaker 2: the guys have come from seeing what Drew Locke did
- 28:10Speaker 2: the other day. It bears repeating. Locke completed 16 to
- 28:15Speaker 2: 22 passes for 187 yards, the tying touchdown to Jackson
- 28:18Speaker 2: Smith and Jigman in the fourth quarter without playing a
- 28:21Speaker 2: single snap in practice of the game plan. Zero. You
- 28:25Speaker 2: listening had as much time preparing on the field for
- 28:28Speaker 2: that game plan as Drew Locke did. People think that
- 28:32Speaker 2: it's like high school where the backup quarterback gets some reps,
- 28:35Speaker 2: he just gets some experience, and the head coach wants
- 28:38Speaker 2: to see him. Nuh-uh, not in the NFL. The collective
- 28:41Speaker 2: bargaining agreement limits these guys on the field in the season.
- 28:45Speaker 2: They give a mandatory Tuesday. Most teams give a completely
- 28:49Speaker 2: off Monday from the field. They come in and do
- 28:51Speaker 2: treatment and film study and meetings. But a day after game,
- 28:54Speaker 2: teams are rarely on the field anymore unless they have
- 28:56Speaker 2: a Thursday game that week. Tuesday is the mandatory NFL weekend.
- 29:00Speaker 2: day off for Sunday-to-Sunday games. The collective bargaining agreement requires it.
- 29:04Speaker 2: Wednesday's when they practice, but they're limited in how many
- 29:07Speaker 2: hours they can be on the field. Thursday, same thing. Friday,
- 29:10Speaker 2: same thing. And if you're traveling to the East Coast,
- 29:12Speaker 2: you leave Friday. If you're traveling to Phoenix, in this case,
- 29:15Speaker 2: they leave Saturday afternoon. And they have a walk-through practice
- 29:18Speaker 2: in T-shirts and bucket hats before they get on the plane.
- 29:21Speaker 2: That's it. Because that is such a limited amount of time,
- 29:25Speaker 2: the number one quarterback gets all the reps.
- 29:28Speaker 4: Of course.
- 29:28Speaker 2: Yeah. Because they've got to go through two-minute, they've got
- 29:31Speaker 2: to go through third downs, they've got to go through
- 29:34Speaker 2: short yardage and goal line, all those practice periods they do,
- 29:38Speaker 2: the game plan. Those packages of plays change every week,
- 29:41Speaker 2: of course, depending on the opponent they play. So they
- 29:44Speaker 2: have to practice those in the game, and the number
- 29:46Speaker 2: one quarterback has to practice those. So what was Drew
- 29:49Speaker 2: Locke doing leading into the opener? He was running Drake
- 29:52Speaker 2: May's offense and the Patriots' offense as the scout team quarterback.
- 29:57Speaker 2: The number two quarterback in the NFL does that. Now,
- 30:00Speaker 2: if it's a running quarterback they're about to face, they'll
- 30:02Speaker 2: throw Jalen Milrow in there to give him a more
- 30:05Speaker 2: elusive quarterback look. But the point is, Drew Locke got
- 30:09Speaker 2: zero reps with this game plan last week. So Chuck
- 30:13Speaker 2: asked me this morning, who has the advantage? The Cardinals,
- 30:16Speaker 2: who haven't seen a game plan, and now they get
- 30:20Speaker 2: a backup quarterback for Drew Locke in the Seahawks offense,
- 30:23Speaker 2: or do the Seahawks have it in that the Cardinals
- 30:25Speaker 2: haven't seen Locke? And I said, well, They haven't seen
- 30:27Speaker 2: Locke run Brian Fleury's offense with preparation and game planning
- 30:33Speaker 2: of it. He was ad hoc on the fly against
- 30:36Speaker 2: the Patriots. This time, he's got a full week of
- 30:40Speaker 2: Brian Fleury installing the offense to Drew Locke and Locke
- 30:43Speaker 2: carrying it out on the field. Locke is going to
- 30:45Speaker 2: be so much better steeped, much, much more effective in
- 30:49Speaker 2: what Fleury wants to do the entire breadth of the play.
- 30:52Speaker 2: It's not that Locke didn't know the plays. It's that
- 30:55Speaker 2: he hadn't run the plays in the practice for that
- 30:57Speaker 2: game week. Well, now he will. So their offense should
- 31:01Speaker 2: be much broader, and they should have much, much more
- 31:05Speaker 2: at their disposal specific to the opponent than they did
- 31:09Speaker 2: last week. They were relying on stuff they had installed
- 31:12Speaker 2: during the season, regardless of opponent, during the preseason, regardless
- 31:15Speaker 2: of opponent. Remember the fourth down play we talked about
- 31:17Speaker 2: with Jackson Smith and Jigba that tied the game, the
- 31:20Speaker 2: 45-yard catch on fourth and one?
- 31:22Speaker 3: Yeah, that was pretty– That was pretty.
- 31:25Speaker 2: It was. And after the game, Locke explained it wasn't
- 31:28Speaker 2: just that he was surprised and appreciated the pat on
- 31:32Speaker 2: the butt, as he said, from Brian Fleury that they
- 31:34Speaker 2: were going to go for it and not do a
- 31:36Speaker 2: barnyard push on fourth and one, but that they ran
- 31:39Speaker 2: a play they had not practiced that game week. That
- 31:42Speaker 2: play was not in the game plan. The fourth and
- 31:44Speaker 2: one little hitch from Smith and Jigba as a third
- 31:47Speaker 2: read from right to left was not in the game plan,
- 31:49Speaker 2: but they had installed that in the spring and summer.
- 31:52Speaker 2: So Locke had done that. And I had to bet
- 31:55Speaker 2: if Brian Flurry probably made that call, knowing that Locke
- 31:59Speaker 2: was probably better off running that play than a game
- 32:03Speaker 2: plan specific play for fourth and one that he hadn't practiced.
- 32:06Speaker 2: See my point? This year, excuse me, this week for
- 32:09Speaker 2: this game, Flurry doesn't have to do that. He doesn't
- 32:12Speaker 2: have to go back to his June and July and
- 32:14Speaker 2: August staple of plays that Locke ran because Locke will
- 32:17Speaker 2: now have been running the game plan specific for the
- 32:20Speaker 2: Cardinals this week. And that to me is a big difference.
- 32:23Speaker 2: to how this offense, how more the breadth they can
- 32:27Speaker 2: have specific to the Cardinals defense that they didn't have
- 32:30Speaker 2: against the Patriots.
- 32:32Speaker 3: It will be interesting to see their scheme. I'm totally
- 32:35Speaker 3: with you on that. I come in with pure curiosity,
- 32:39Speaker 3: and I think it'll be interesting.
- 32:41Speaker 2: What are they going to do?
- 32:42Speaker 3: Are they going to Sam Darnold protect the ball in
- 32:44Speaker 3: the Super Bowl? Or do they have a different package?
- 32:50Speaker 2: Well, I think they're going to get the full package
- 32:53Speaker 2: of plays specific to the Cardinals' defense. They can trust
- 32:55Speaker 2: Drew Locke to do that. I don't think they just
- 32:57Speaker 2: need him to be a game manager on Sunday. I
- 32:59Speaker 2: think it's going to be Jadarian Price even more than
- 33:02Speaker 2: we saw Price in the opener. I don't think you're
- 33:04Speaker 2: going to have to have training wheels or a governor
- 33:06Speaker 2: on what Locke can do and how to manage through
- 33:08Speaker 2: the game. He'll take his shots down the field. But
- 33:11Speaker 2: the bottom line is they have a defense that if
- 33:13Speaker 2: they need to do what you just said, they can
- 33:16Speaker 2: have the quarterback go into turtle shell. They can. It'd
- 33:19Speaker 2: still be Jacoby Brissett. They can.
- 33:21Speaker 3: Yes.
- 33:21Speaker 2: Yes.
- 33:22Speaker 3: I do like the turtle shell visual that it gives me.
- 33:27Speaker 3: That's good because there's like a euphemism attached to turtles.
- 33:31Speaker 3: And I think both ends make sense.
- 33:33Speaker 2: It's from all the sea turtles that I saw in
- 33:36Speaker 2: the ocean.
- 33:37Speaker 3: Oh, I can't wait to hear more about that. Oh,
- 33:39Speaker 3: just they're so like graceful, majestic, slow. They're like, chill out, man.
- 33:43Speaker 3: Just chill out.
- 33:45Speaker 2: And I'm like, oh. They're revered in Hawaii, too. You
- 33:48Speaker 2: can't get near them. There's all kinds of state rules.
- 33:52Speaker 2: There were people trying to saddle up the ones that
- 33:54Speaker 2: were on the beach on the North Shore, trying to
- 33:56Speaker 2: put Instagram pictures and stuff. And there are volunteers with
- 33:59Speaker 2: the Ecological Society and nature people in Hawaii that shoo
- 34:03Speaker 2: those people away. You're supposed to have a 10-feet radius
- 34:06Speaker 2: around sea turtles.
- 34:07Speaker 3: Yeah, like one swam up on me, and I was like, no,
- 34:09Speaker 3: this is, I'm not supposed to do this. Yeah. When
- 34:14Speaker 3: I was snorkeling just like off of a hotel beach,
- 34:17Speaker 3: and one was just like right next to me, and
- 34:18Speaker 3: I'm like, this is your fault, I'm like.
- 34:23Speaker 2: By the way, I had not spent any time on Oahu,
- 34:25Speaker 2: the north shore of Oahu, Haleiwa, and all the way
- 34:30Speaker 2: up in North Turtle Bay, all over.
- 34:32Speaker 3: Oh, my gosh. The North Shore that swells up there
- 34:36Speaker 3: are a little bit different.
- 34:37Speaker 2: Yeah, the pipeline and all that. We went surfing, but
- 34:39Speaker 2: not there. We went to a place called Chun's Reef
- 34:42Speaker 2: and more three or four foot waves instead of three
- 34:47Speaker 2: or four waves. 49451, your level of concern with Drew Locke,
- 34:49Speaker 2: not Sam Donald, the quarterback. And also, do you think
- 34:52Speaker 2: the Mariners are playing to get their leaders fired? I'm
- 34:55Speaker 2: talking the president and the general manager because that's how
- 34:59Speaker 2: it looks right now. It looks like they're trying to
- 35:01Speaker 2: get the house cleaned by the way they're performing. Or
- 35:05Speaker 2: am I off base? I don't think they're doing that.
- 35:07Speaker 2: I just disagree. Okay.
- 35:09Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 35:09Speaker 3: One vote for Jess. One vote for Greg.
- 35:12Speaker 2: Losing four or five to the A's and Angels. I'm
- 35:15Speaker 2: talking two of the worst teams in the league in
- 35:17Speaker 2: many years. Suggest that they aren't just playing out the string,
- 35:20Speaker 2: but they just seem to be doing it with a purpose.
- 35:22Speaker 3: 49451.
- 35:22Speaker 2: We'll read back your text at 1130. But up next.
- 35:27Speaker 2: Let's talk about the Mariners. Let's talk about what Logan
- 35:29Speaker 2: Gilbert said. Somewhat expanded conversation about the team's failures and
- 35:32Speaker 2: the mess of a season. He said that in Anaheim
- 35:35Speaker 2: last night. You'll hear from Logan Gilbert next. 11 o'clock,
- 35:38Speaker 2: Jory Epstein in her first of a season-long series of
- 35:41Speaker 2: weekly stops from Yahoo Sports, the NFL senior writer. She
- 35:44Speaker 2: was in Kansas City for the Kenneth Walker Chiefs debut.
- 35:47Speaker 2: On Monday night, we'll talk to her at 11. Ian's
- 35:49Speaker 2: right next to me. He'll be on the show 12
- 35:51Speaker 2: to 3. We'll talk to him at 11.45 on what
- 35:53Speaker 2: he's got going on on 93.3 KJRFM. Hi, welcome back
- 36:14Speaker 2: to the Virginia Mason Athletic Center and Seahawks headquarters. Greg Bell,
- 36:17Speaker 2: Justin McIntyre, as we are every day, 10 a.m. to
- 36:19Speaker 2: noon here on 93.3 KTRFM. I'm fresh off a plane
- 36:23Speaker 2: late last night, a Hawaiian Airlines jet from Honolulu.
- 36:25Speaker 3: Get some tan, Greg.
- 36:26Speaker 2: I got to see our daughter, Ensign Sarah Bell.
- 36:29Speaker 3: What is so cool about her?
- 36:30Speaker 2: How is Sarah? She's okay.
- 36:33Speaker 3: She's qualified. Going through it?
- 36:35Speaker 2: She's going through it. She just got back from Japan.
- 36:37Speaker 2: Now they're loading up the boat and getting it prepared
- 36:39Speaker 2: and ready to go out to the Bering Sea. She's
- 36:41Speaker 2: going to spend... Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's in the
- 36:45Speaker 2: Bering Sea.
- 36:47Speaker 3: She is going through it.
- 36:49Speaker 2: I'm not sure why those that are stationed in Hawaii
- 36:51Speaker 2: have to spend the winter in the Bering Sea. Part
- 36:54Speaker 2: of the gig. Yesterday, she qualified on M9, a 9mm
- 36:59Speaker 2: Beretta firing qualification. So she can be a boarding officer
- 37:03Speaker 2: to go on to ships if she needs to. They
- 37:06Speaker 2: carry firearms to do that. She has absolutely no gun
- 37:08Speaker 2: background at all. I mean, zero.
- 37:11Speaker 3: Sarah and I share something in common.
- 37:13Speaker 2: We didn't even have water guns in our house when
- 37:15Speaker 2: we were growing up. And, yes, she was tickled that
- 37:17Speaker 2: she passed yesterday on her third try.
- 37:20Speaker 3: That's great.
- 37:21Speaker 4: Congrats, Sarah.
- 37:22Speaker 2: That's Sarah Bell. Yeah, so we went surfing and hiking
- 37:28Speaker 2: and went to the lighthouse, Coco Point at the eastern
- 37:34Speaker 2: edge of Oahu. I hadn't spent any time in Oahu
- 37:36Speaker 2: before that. It was great. It was awesome. Well-deserved. Well-deserved, Greg.
- 37:41Speaker 2: I appreciate that. Thank you. It was great. Great time.
- 37:44Speaker 2: Logan Gilbert and the Mariners. Well, not so much Logan Gilbert.
- 37:47Speaker 2: He's doing his part. But the Mariners are playing like
- 37:49Speaker 2: they're already on vacation in Hawaii. They have lost 4-5
- 37:51Speaker 2: on the road trip to the A's and the Angels
- 37:55Speaker 2: on a nine-game trip. They play the third game of
- 37:57Speaker 2: that series tonight. Logan Gilbert last night, six innings, only
- 38:01Speaker 2: six hits allowed, only two runs allowed, seven strikeouts, and
- 38:04Speaker 2: they still lost because the Mariners got only one run
- 38:06Speaker 2: and struck out nine times against the Angels, losing 2-1.
- 38:10Speaker 2: And after the game, Logan Gilbert spoke at somewhat of length.
- 38:14Speaker 2: You'll hear Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times, the Mariners'
- 38:16Speaker 2: beat writer, and others asking about this entire season at large. Why?
- 38:20Speaker 3: Why?
- 38:21Speaker 2: Because last night clinched the Mariners' first losing season since 2019.
- 38:24Speaker 2: This is Logan Gilbert in Anaheim last night.
- 38:27Speaker 8: I mean, it's really disappointing. Everybody knows that. I think
- 38:31Speaker 8: the most frustrating part is, like, we've kind of been
- 38:34Speaker 8: saying it all year, and everybody thought it would turn,
- 38:37Speaker 8: and play 160 games, things are going to turn around,
- 38:40Speaker 8: because we know we have a good team, and just
- 38:42Speaker 8: never really turned around, and that's on us. Like, got
- 38:45Speaker 8: to play better, got to execute and do what we
- 38:47Speaker 8: need to do. But it is pretty surprising that we're
- 38:50Speaker 8: at this point. I don't think anybody thought we'd be here,
- 38:53Speaker 8: but that's the situation we're in.
- 38:55Speaker 2: Will it take, like, after the season to really kind
- 38:57Speaker 2: of reflect and figure out where it kind of went
- 39:00Speaker 2: so wrong, do you think?
- 39:02Speaker 9: Or do you have ideas now?
- 39:04Speaker 8: Yeah, I think everybody at this point has been thinking
- 39:07Speaker 8: about it and stuff because, like, I think there will
- 39:11Speaker 8: be some reflection and conversations that, need to be had
- 39:16Speaker 8: with players, with coaches, just everybody getting on the same
- 39:18Speaker 8: page and assessing what happened. This is the kind of
- 39:23Speaker 8: thing that can't happen and you can't let it happen again.
- 39:26Speaker 8: but it's baseball but it's frustrating because i believe we
- 39:30Speaker 8: have the talent in that room and it's a lot
- 39:33Speaker 8: of people would say a lot of people in that
- 39:36Speaker 8: clubhouse would say we haven't played up to the standards
- 39:37Speaker 8: that we set for ourselves so it's it's been frustrating
- 39:41Speaker 8: all year and on.
- 39:43Speaker 2: The positive side can you say something about what you
- 39:45Speaker 2: thought you did well tonight.
- 39:47Speaker 8: Who's that me I mean, I lost the game for us. No, it's–
- 39:55Speaker 8: I mean, there are positives. I don't ever want to
- 39:57Speaker 8: be too negative. But, you know, we lost a 2-1
- 39:59Speaker 8: game in a game that we should have won, and
- 40:02Speaker 8: I gave up the last run. So that's kind of
- 40:05Speaker 8: the situation that we're in. So, yeah, it's disappointing.
- 40:09Speaker 7: Well, you've talked about and others have talked about that
- 40:11Speaker 7: throughout the year it's just been hard to get everybody
- 40:14Speaker 7: kind of functioning at the same time. Sometimes the starting
- 40:17Speaker 7: pitching is there. and the hitting isn't sometimes the hitting is,
- 40:20Speaker 7: what is that like when you don't have that consistency
- 40:24Speaker 7: all year?
- 40:25Speaker 8: Yeah, I think we kind of hit on that a
- 40:27Speaker 8: couple of times, the timing, like you said, and it's,
- 40:29Speaker 8: it's tough because what do you do to make it happen?
- 40:32Speaker 8: I don't think anybody knows how to time up everything
- 40:34Speaker 8: at the same time. That's historically when we went on
- 40:37Speaker 8: those runs and been, you know, the best team in
- 40:39Speaker 8: the league or in the division at times and just
- 40:44Speaker 8: haven't really seen that this year. Um, Especially the timing
- 40:48Speaker 8: of it. That's another frustrating part that we've seen flashes
- 40:52Speaker 8: of good hitting.
- 40:52Speaker 2: We've seen flashes of good pitching and bullpen, everything.
- 40:56Speaker 8: It's just getting on the same page at the same time. And,
- 40:59Speaker 8: you know, it's a great game, but it's also can
- 41:03Speaker 8: be frustrating at the same time. So that's part of it.
- 41:08Speaker 2: Mariners started Logan Gilbert last night after losing two to one.
- 41:12Speaker 2: A loss that clinches the Mariners having a losing season
- 41:15Speaker 2: for the first time since 2019, which, yes, was the
- 41:18Speaker 2: start of this teardown that was supposed to build back
- 41:21Speaker 2: up to get to a World Series, and it still
- 41:24Speaker 2: hasn't happened. And the Mariners, a World Series favorite, who
- 41:28Speaker 2: the team owner on this station, John Stanton, on opening
- 41:31Speaker 2: day said to Dave Softy Mahler, depending on injuries, this
- 41:35Speaker 2: team should compete for the World Series. Now, Jerry DiPoto
- 41:38Speaker 2: can come back and say, look at all the injuries
- 41:39Speaker 2: we've had, Brendan Donovan, J.P. Crawford. to our pitching staff,
- 41:44Speaker 2: Kyle Raleigh wasn't healthy for the first part of the season.
- 41:47Speaker 2: All true. But the fact remains that they were underperforming
- 41:50Speaker 2: while those guys were healthy and before they got hurt.
- 41:52Speaker 2: And this has been without a doubt, the most frustrating,
- 41:56Speaker 2: disappointing season in Mariners history. Oh boy.
- 42:00Speaker 3: That is definitely saying something, Greg, that is, that is
- 42:04Speaker 3: a rough go. Um, because I know that there have been,
- 42:07Speaker 3: I mean, 2001, um, you know, two, the Yankees just
- 42:12Speaker 3: did what they did. And I wasn't even here at
- 42:15Speaker 3: that time. But I know all about it. There are
- 42:18Speaker 3: so many times where they, and I'm not saying that
- 42:22Speaker 3: they have clutched defeat from the jaws of victory or
- 42:26Speaker 3: anything like that. But this one, it just, you kept waiting.
- 42:30Speaker 3: You just kept waiting for them to do it.
- 42:33Speaker 2: And it never happened. Logan Gilbert speaking on the Mariners saying, quote,
- 42:36Speaker 2: this is the kind of thing that can happen. I
- 42:38Speaker 2: believe we have the talent. We haven't played up to
- 42:40Speaker 2: our standard. And they have not. And that'll be the
- 42:42Speaker 2: postscript to this Mariners season, the most disappointing one ever. 49451,
- 42:45Speaker 2: your reaction to what Logan Gilbert had to say. The
- 42:48Speaker 2: players should be wearing this on the Tacoma Dodge textile
- 42:52Speaker 2: rebates back at 1130. 1135, we'll have Factor Fiction, my pick.
- 42:55Speaker 2: I'm staying local. I mean, really local.
- 42:57Speaker 3: Oh, that's a tease, Greg.
- 43:01Speaker 2: On your home for the dogs on 93.3 KJR FM.
- 43:02Speaker 2: But up next. Jory Epstein of the senior NFL writer
- 43:07Speaker 2: for Yahoo Sports. She was at the Seahawks Patriots owner
- 43:10Speaker 2: sitting in the press box with me last week. She
- 43:12Speaker 2: was in Kansas City watching Kenneth Walker's debut for Andy
- 43:16Speaker 2: Reid's Chiefs that went so swimmingly well for Walker in
- 43:19Speaker 2: Kansas City. Jory is up on the first of our
- 43:22Speaker 2: season-long weekly visits with Jory Epstein next on 93.3 KJRFM.
- 43:34Speaker 1: Now, from the Star Reynolds Sports Desk, your 93.3 KJR
- 43:38Speaker 1: FM Sports Headlines.
- 43:41Speaker 2: Aloha. And all of that. Hello. Thank you. Frostbrewed Coors Light.
- 43:48Speaker 2: As cold as the Rockies and Seahawks. Practicing today. Beginning
- 43:51Speaker 2: their practice week for Sunday's game at Arizona. Drew Locke's
- 43:54Speaker 2: going to start it. It's going to be his first
- 43:56Speaker 2: start for the Seahawks since December of 23. Sam Darnold
- 44:00Speaker 2: out indefinitely. with that soft tissue injury around the area
- 44:04Speaker 2: of the hip, but not the hip bone. At least
- 44:07Speaker 2: Arizona on Sunday for Drew Locke, and if not beyond,
- 44:10Speaker 2: at Washington the following week. The Mariners, well, that easy
- 44:14Speaker 2: part of the schedule isn't quite so easy, is it?
- 44:15Speaker 2: They've lost now four or five in a nine-game road
- 44:17Speaker 2: trip through Sacramento and Anaheim. 2-1 loss last night. Man,
- 44:23Speaker 2: there's not a lot more to say. Logan Gilbert said
- 44:25Speaker 2: it last segment, this is unacceptable. The Milwaukee Brewers, lower
- 44:30Speaker 2: payroll than the Mariners, 2-1. $ 21 million lower. Won the
- 44:34Speaker 2: National League Central Division last night. Clinched the title. First
- 44:37Speaker 2: Major League Baseball team to clinch a title this season.
- 44:39Speaker 2: NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said the league spent people to
- 44:42Speaker 2: Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle and found that if they
- 44:46Speaker 2: could have that arena, Climate Pledge Arena, ready to host
- 44:48Speaker 2: NBA games in five weeks. That's the opposite of the
- 44:51Speaker 2: situation in Las Vegas where they don't have an NBA-ready arena.
- 44:54Speaker 2: They don't even have concrete owners. The league's ready to
- 44:56Speaker 2: award an expansion franchise to So now the efforts will
- 44:59Speaker 2: be on settling Las Vegas' situation. Seattle seems set. All
- 45:04Speaker 2: that still means we don't know when the league's going
- 45:05Speaker 2: to announce the Sonics are coming back. Silver now says
- 45:07Speaker 2: at the end of this year for an announcement on expansion. Yeah, okay, sure.
- 45:11Speaker 2: Enough already with that. Can we move on to getting
- 45:14Speaker 2: them back, please? We're like 20 years overdue. The Sounders
- 45:18Speaker 2: are losing leading scorer Paul Rothrock for eight to ten weeks,
- 45:21Speaker 2: which is pretty much at the end of the season,
- 45:22Speaker 2: the way the Sounders haven't been winning lately. The 2-0
- 45:26Speaker 2: barely Washington Huskies host the Eastern Washington Eags on Saturday
- 45:29Speaker 2: at 4.15 right here on 93.3 KJRFM. This morning, ESPN's
- 45:33Speaker 2: Joe Buck has agreed to a new contract worth more
- 45:35Speaker 2: than $ 100 million. It's going to keep him as the
- 45:37Speaker 2: voice of Monday Night Football into the next decade. And
- 45:40Speaker 2: the NFL, the NBA, Major League Baseball, NHL, and MLS
- 45:44Speaker 2: issued a joint statement uniting in an effort to crack
- 45:46Speaker 2: down on betting related to harassment of players, coaches, and
- 45:50Speaker 2: their families. The WNBA criticized the NBA for not including
- 45:54Speaker 2: them in its statement and Adam Silver said, well, the
- 45:57Speaker 2: WNBA needs less divisive leadership moving forward.
- 46:01Speaker 3: Interesting.
- 46:02Speaker 2: I'm not going on the WNBA this year. Jory Epstein,
- 46:08Speaker 2: I am so happy to have her back. She is
- 46:10Speaker 2: the senior NFL writer for Yahoo Sports. She was on
- 46:13Speaker 2: my show a couple years ago when Christopher Kidd and
- 46:15Speaker 2: I had it. And now she's back on the station.
- 46:18Speaker 2: I'm proud to have her on our show, become a
- 46:20Speaker 2: good friend of mine. I saw her last week in
- 46:22Speaker 2: the press box. in Seattle for the Patriots-Seahawks NFL Open.
- 46:26Speaker 2: Then she went to Kansas City, was in Kenneth Walker's
- 46:29Speaker 2: debut as a Chief Monday night when the Chiefs rolled
- 46:33Speaker 2: the Broncos. Jory is on the Beacon Plumbing Hotline. Good morning, ma'am.
- 46:37Speaker 2: Good afternoon for you.
- 46:39Speaker 4: Greg, great to be on with you. Great to be
- 46:41Speaker 4: back on the show.
- 46:42Speaker 2: You are back. we're working, they're, they're fighting over who
- 46:45Speaker 2: to sponsor you. And it might be a familiar pizza eater.
- 46:47Speaker 2: We're trying to figure all this out right now.
- 46:49Speaker 10: We've got my picture from.
- 46:51Speaker 4: My run on us.
- 46:52Speaker 2: Yes.
- 46:52Speaker 4: If they, if they name the sponsor.
- 46:57Speaker 2: So we, they're fighting over you right now. So you
- 47:00Speaker 2: were in Seattle last week, Patriots, Seahawks. Of course, the big,
- 47:03Speaker 2: big story is Sam Donald being injured, but, I'm going
- 47:06Speaker 2: to ask you about that in a second, but your
- 47:07Speaker 2: general thoughts on the Seahawks Patriots on both teams and
- 47:11Speaker 2: what the Seahawks look like to you as, as defending
- 47:13Speaker 2: Superbowl champions.
- 47:16Speaker 4: Yeah, absolutely.
- 47:17Speaker 10: I think the Seahawks showed us that they've built a
- 47:19Speaker 10: team that doesn't rely too much on any single player.
- 47:22Speaker 4: There are different ways the Seahawks can win.
- 47:23Speaker 10: And I think, When you see Sam Darnold go out
- 47:26Speaker 10: so early in the game, you kind of wonder, hey,
- 47:29Speaker 10: they're going to be able to do this. I mean,
- 47:30Speaker 10: this is a good Patriots team, or at least they
- 47:32Speaker 10: were a good team last year.
- 47:34Speaker 4: And all of a sudden, you're.
- 47:36Speaker 10: Like, oh, no, how about three interceptions here? How about
- 47:38Speaker 10: a running back who can make moves here? How about
- 47:41Speaker 10: Jackson Smith and Jigba once again stepping up to make
- 47:43Speaker 10: things a little bit easier on Drew Locke?
- 47:45Speaker 4: And so I think.
- 47:46Speaker 10: That we saw the Seahawks face adversity really early in
- 47:50Speaker 10: the season.
- 47:51Speaker 4: They responded.
- 47:52Speaker 9: And I think.
- 47:53Speaker 10: When you look at it, it's like, what were they
- 47:55Speaker 10: able to do? And also, what can they do next?
- 47:57Speaker 10: Which is, the biggest problems when Drew Locke was in
- 48:00Speaker 10: the game, to me, wasn't missed passes. It was some
- 48:02Speaker 10: of the penalties, kind of that pre-snap stuff. Once he
- 48:05Speaker 10: has more first-team snaps, I think that he'll be able
- 48:08Speaker 10: to get a little bit of a handle on that,
- 48:09Speaker 10: and everyone else will get a little more used to
- 48:11Speaker 10: playing with him.
- 48:12Speaker 2: Good point, Joy. Seven pre-snap penalties, a big focus of
- 48:15Speaker 2: practice this week for the Seahawks from that game against
- 48:18Speaker 2: the Patriots. What did you think of Drake May? I mean,
- 48:20Speaker 2: 10 of 12 to start the game. He's got him
- 48:23Speaker 2: up 10-0 in the second half. He throws the first
- 48:26Speaker 2: interception nearly as bad as the last with a jump
- 48:29Speaker 2: ball into double coverage that got tipped by Rodney Thomas
- 48:32Speaker 2: into Nehemiah Pritchett's hands, and that really started the comeback.
- 48:35Speaker 2: The Seahawks got a field goal out of that one.
- 48:37Speaker 2: The second interception, Julian Love just baited him into over
- 48:40Speaker 2: the middle and broke late on the ball, picked it off.
- 48:42Speaker 2: That set up the touchdown to tie the game. And
- 48:45Speaker 2: then the last one. I mean, a seventh-grade quarterback doesn't
- 48:49Speaker 2: make that play. You're under pressure, backpedaling in the end
- 48:52Speaker 2: zone with a field goal in hand in your back
- 48:54Speaker 2: pocket to force overtime, and you just hey you it.
- 48:57Speaker 2: I mean, you talk about a YOLO ball with the
- 48:59Speaker 2: game on the line. How concerning was that interception? Not
- 49:03Speaker 2: so much the throw, which is physically bad enough, but
- 49:05Speaker 2: the decision, the thought process at that point in the
- 49:08Speaker 2: game in that situation.
- 49:11Speaker 10: Yeah, it was concerning, and he knew that after the game.
- 49:14Speaker 10: I mean, Drake's saying this, Rabel's saying this. He's like, look,
- 49:16Speaker 10: I lost patience, and I can't do that, and the
- 49:19Speaker 10: team expects better.
- 49:20Speaker 4: From me.
- 49:20Speaker 10: I think we kind of see quarterbacks, when they feel
- 49:23Speaker 10: like things aren't going well around them, feel like they
- 49:25Speaker 10: need to play hero ball.
- 49:26Speaker 4: They need to do more than they're probably able to do.
- 49:29Speaker 10: And he's like, oh, well, you know, Matt Collins made
- 49:31Speaker 10: a good play earlier in that drive and he's in
- 49:33Speaker 10: the end zone and maybe I'll get it to him.
- 49:35Speaker 10: And Matt Collins also told us after the game, I
- 49:37Speaker 10: was in their locker room and he's like, look, I
- 49:39Speaker 10: needed to back that ball down.
- 49:40Speaker 4: It was a little bit far for him to do that.
- 49:41Speaker 4: So I don't think.
- 49:42Speaker 10: Mac was just like giving up. But Drake is not
- 49:45Speaker 10: able to do that. And what concerns me is not
- 49:48Speaker 10: that he did it this game. Yes, you don't want
- 49:50Speaker 10: to be making those decisions, but lots of people have
- 49:52Speaker 10: moments like that. I mean, we saw Dak Prescott throw
- 49:54Speaker 10: an interception, kind of similar vibes where he should have
- 49:57Speaker 10: thrown it out of bounds before halftime against the Giants.
- 50:00Speaker 4: Ultimately was really notable in their loss.
- 50:02Speaker 10: Not the same stakes as the end of the game
- 50:03Speaker 10: in that first game of the NFL season, but we
- 50:06Speaker 10: do see this around the league. I think what's concerning
- 50:08Speaker 10: is A.J. Brown's not coming back for at least four
- 50:10Speaker 10: weeks with that high ankle sprain. He was their off-season acquisition,
- 50:14Speaker 10: kind of their prize target. They traded for him on
- 50:16Speaker 10: June 1st. and when he was in the game earlier,
- 50:19Speaker 10: we saw third downs.
- 50:20Speaker 4: A.J.
- 50:21Speaker 10: Brown was a very reliable safety valve to keep him
- 50:23Speaker 10: on the field. After he was off, it kind of
- 50:26Speaker 10: felt like the Seahawks defensive backs knew where Drake's passes
- 50:28Speaker 10: were going a little more than some of the Patriots receivers,
- 50:31Speaker 10: and not single him out, but Romeo Dobbs.
- 50:33Speaker 4: I think he's new to that system. It did not
- 50:35Speaker 4: seem like they were on the same page.
- 50:36Speaker 10: I couldn't tell you which one was right in which situations,
- 50:40Speaker 10: but I think that... take a little bit more time
- 50:43Speaker 10: for Drake May and his current weapons to figure out
- 50:45Speaker 10: what they need to do, and the schedule's not getting easier.
- 50:48Speaker 2: Jory Epstein, a senior NFL writer for Yahoo Sports, is
- 50:51Speaker 2: joining us, as she will, every week during the NFL
- 50:53Speaker 2: season here on 93.3 KJRFM on the Beacon Plumbing Hotline. Ma'am,
- 50:57Speaker 2: you were in Kansas City at Arrowhead Stadium on Monday night,
- 51:00Speaker 2: and you saw the debut of Kenneth Walker, and man,
- 51:02Speaker 2: did Andy Reid go for him. 68% of the offensive snaps,
- 51:05Speaker 2: 29 opportunities for him, 23 carries for 170-plus yards. Six
- 51:12Speaker 2: targets in the pass game from Patrick Mahomes, and Mahomes
- 51:14Speaker 2: has returned from injury. A bofo debut for Kenneth Walker,
- 51:20Speaker 2: for sure, but we know out here in Seattle his
- 51:23Speaker 2: injury history. The text line's already blowing up with, man,
- 51:26Speaker 2: I don't know. Did you get any sense of whether
- 51:29Speaker 2: the Chiefs think they can do this the entire season,
- 51:32Speaker 2: or was this a one-off that they know they're going
- 51:34Speaker 2: to have to taper him to Kenneth Walker?
- 51:38Speaker 10: Yeah, it's a great question, Greg, and I think it
- 51:40Speaker 10: very much ties into where is Patrick Mahomes and his recovery. Obviously,
- 51:44Speaker 10: it's fun for us to all see Patrick back. It's
- 51:46Speaker 10: fun for us to see the 15-yard rushing touchdown he had,
- 51:48Speaker 10: which was actually supposed to be a play to Travis
- 51:51Speaker 10: Kelsey at the beginning of the game. And instead, Patrick
- 51:53Speaker 10: kind of took it all the way, dives into the
- 51:55Speaker 10: end zone. And everyone's like, I mean, Chris Jones had
- 51:57Speaker 10: found some tackle when I asked him about it. It
- 51:59Speaker 10: was like, yep, I held my breath until he got up.
- 52:01Speaker 4: Because I'm like, QB1.
- 52:02Speaker 10: Do we need you diving into the end zone, the
- 52:05Speaker 10: first series of the game?
- 52:07Speaker 4: But really what.
- 52:07Speaker 10: This comes down to is Patrick Mahomes told us he
- 52:10Speaker 10: felt physically back.
- 52:12Speaker 4: But not mentally back.
- 52:13Speaker 10: And what he means by that is the speed of
- 52:15Speaker 10: the game is still a little bit of an adjustment,
- 52:17Speaker 10: the trusting of his knee after the rehabilitation and surgical
- 52:20Speaker 10: repair of his ACL and LCL. And so for Patrick,
- 52:24Speaker 10: he was like, look, I was overstriding at some points
- 52:26Speaker 10: and then I threw some low passes. I was rushing
- 52:29Speaker 10: because I didn't totally trust my knee and the protection
- 52:31Speaker 10: and especially with the left tackle out, although credit to
- 52:34Speaker 10: Khalil Benson, the rookie, he did a great job. But
- 52:36Speaker 10: Patrick was rushing and not getting to his second and
- 52:38Speaker 10: third reads. And so when all that comes, you end
- 52:41Speaker 10: up having more on Kenneth Walker, who's got the 191
- 52:44Speaker 10: yards for a scrimmage and 173 particularly rushing because, hey,
- 52:49Speaker 10: what about that 60-yard touchdown? Well, that was on a
- 52:51Speaker 10: fourth and one play. Well, you're not at fourth and
- 52:53Speaker 10: one if you convert on third down, obviously. And some
- 52:55Speaker 10: of this was Patrick was not fully on his game.
- 52:57Speaker 10: So I think there's the injury element to be aware
- 53:00Speaker 10: of for Kenneth, but I also think that Kenneth Walker
- 53:03Speaker 10: will not need to do as much because Patrick Mahomes
- 53:05Speaker 10: is going to round back into form. He's going to
- 53:07Speaker 10: get comfortable with the speed of the game, and then
- 53:09Speaker 10: he's going to make more of those passes off of
- 53:11Speaker 10: his progressions.
- 53:12Speaker 2: So you're saying week seven, when the Chiefs come here
- 53:15Speaker 2: to Lumen Field in Seattle, we're going to get the
- 53:17Speaker 2: full Patrick Mahomes by then, you think?
- 53:21Speaker 10: I think, yes, I think he'll be ready. Now, does
- 53:23Speaker 10: that mean they'll have a pass-heavy attack? I think each
- 53:25Speaker 10: game by game, I mean, we see Andy Reid and
- 53:28Speaker 10: Steve Spagnuolo, their play callers are as good as it comes.
- 53:31Speaker 4: And so they're going to.
- 53:32Speaker 10: Change their game plan week to week. But I don't
- 53:34Speaker 10: think that Patrick will have the limitations in week seven
- 53:36Speaker 10: that he.
- 53:37Speaker 4: Had this week. And I don't think he was super limited.
- 53:39Speaker 10: But I thought he was very honest afterwards about not
- 53:42Speaker 10: feeling like he was playing in his best form.
- 53:45Speaker 2: Kenneth Walker being the aid to that return. Patrick Mahomes
- 53:49Speaker 2: in Kansas City. In Dallas, your former stomping grounds, the
- 53:52Speaker 2: old beat used to cover. Brian Schottenheimer and the Cowboys
- 53:56Speaker 2: spent the entire offseason talking defense, thinking defense, drafting defense,
- 54:00Speaker 2: making moves for defense. And then they give up 400
- 54:03Speaker 2: yards to the Giants. What is going on in Dallas
- 54:07Speaker 2: with the defense? Is it fixable?
- 54:11Speaker 4: I think it's fixable.
- 54:12Speaker 10: I think that we'll see exactly where the talent's at.
- 54:15Speaker 10: But when you look at it, I mean, next-gen stats
- 54:16Speaker 10: had a great line about how in all three of
- 54:19Speaker 10: the touchdowns that the Giants scored, they were wide open,
- 54:22Speaker 10: which next-gen stats was essentially defining as the nearest defender
- 54:26Speaker 10: was at least five yards away from the guy making
- 54:29Speaker 10: the play. And so when you think about that, that's not, oh,
- 54:31Speaker 10: we missed the tackle. It's we weren't even there to
- 54:33Speaker 10: make the tackle. And you say that because... that Brian
- 54:38Speaker 10: Schottenheimer their head coach said afterwards it was more of
- 54:40Speaker 10: a communication issue than a fundamentals issue now there's some
- 54:43Speaker 10: of both going on there particularly at some point you
- 54:45Speaker 10: just can't have them run the same play to the
- 54:48Speaker 10: left side over and over again and not stop them
- 54:50Speaker 10: but I think this is not everyone was really ready
- 54:53Speaker 10: for their assignments you have Malik Hooker veteran safety who
- 54:55Speaker 10: goes out with a broken forearm early in the game
- 54:58Speaker 10: you had a hamstring injury to another player.
- 55:00Speaker 4: And so I think that they will improve.
- 55:03Speaker 10: I think this week will be interesting because they play
- 55:05Speaker 10: the Washington Commanders. The Commanders have a pretty rough offensive line.
- 55:08Speaker 10: They had a challenging one before Laramie Tunzel was out
- 55:11Speaker 10: for the season, even more so after. And so can
- 55:13Speaker 10: this defensive front get any pressure to take some of
- 55:17Speaker 10: the load off of.
- 55:18Speaker 4: The defensive backs? I think that'll be important.
- 55:20Speaker 10: But it's Christian Parker's first game.
- 55:22Speaker 4: It didn't look good. No one's denying that.
- 55:24Speaker 10: But I also think that any play caller on offense
- 55:27Speaker 10: or defense in their first game is going to need
- 55:29Speaker 10: a little bit of an acclimation. And so I'd rather see, hey,
- 55:31Speaker 10: after three, four weeks, where are they at?
- 55:35Speaker 2: Jory Epstein, senior writer for the NFL for Yahoo Sports,
- 55:39Speaker 2: is joining us in the Beacon Plumbing Haunt. And, Jory,
- 55:40Speaker 2: I haven't talked to you since when you came to
- 55:42Speaker 2: Seahawks camp the next day. You broke the story that
- 55:44Speaker 2: DeMarcus Lawrence, your Cowboys buddy, told you this is his
- 55:47Speaker 2: last season. What did you get out of that? And
- 55:51Speaker 2: you've covered his career before we have here in Seattle
- 55:54Speaker 2: and how fulfilled he is finally winning a Super Bowl,
- 55:57Speaker 2: yet he came back for one other season. What did
- 55:59Speaker 2: you learn about that?
- 56:01Speaker 10: Yeah, it was really interesting because I guess there's conversations
- 56:05Speaker 10: as DeMarcus had told you guys about whether he was
- 56:07Speaker 10: even going to come back for this season.
- 56:09Speaker 4: And it wasn't whether he could still play at a
- 56:10Speaker 4: high level.
- 56:11Speaker 10: I mean, you saw even at the end of the game,
- 56:12Speaker 10: I believe DeMarcus had the pressure on Drake May for
- 56:14Speaker 10: that last interception to.
- 56:16Speaker 4: Win the game. And so he's still being really effective.
- 56:19Speaker 10: And the thing about DeMarcus is that some of his
- 56:20Speaker 10: effectiveness won't be captured in stat lines because he's an
- 56:24Speaker 10: effective pass rusher, but run stopping and being able to
- 56:26Speaker 10: do both of those have always been kind of his calling.
- 56:29Speaker 4: Card that people around the league are so impressed with.
- 56:32Speaker 4: So when... I talked to him about that decision.
- 56:35Speaker 10: The challenge is he's got his wife and six kids
- 56:37Speaker 10: in Dallas right now. They all live back there. And
- 56:40Speaker 10: I mean, his last kid was born, what was it,
- 56:43Speaker 10: the day after the Super Bowl, I believe?
- 56:44Speaker 2: Yes, it was.
- 56:45Speaker 10: The Sunday Super Bowl, Monday, new kid born, Thursday parade.
- 56:49Speaker 4: Maybe Wednesday, you would know that part better than I do.
- 56:51Speaker 10: And so he kind of had this decision of, do
- 56:53Speaker 10: I want to leave my family again for six months?
- 56:56Speaker 10: But ultimately, he felt like he is still playing at
- 56:58Speaker 10: a high level. there's kind of that identity question when
- 57:01Speaker 10: guys are leaving football, like this is who I am
- 57:04Speaker 10: and what I do. Am I ready for that next chapter?
- 57:06Speaker 10: And he wasn't quite ready for the next chapter. And
- 57:08Speaker 10: he and his wife were on the same page of
- 57:10Speaker 10: this decision. So he's not saying, I feel like from
- 57:13Speaker 10: a physical standpoint and injuries, I only have one more
- 57:15Speaker 10: year left. He was instead saying, I think I can
- 57:18Speaker 10: only justify one more year away from my family to,
- 57:21Speaker 10: to play this game. So yeah, Um, I'm excited to
- 57:23Speaker 10: see what his last year brings. I think that it's,
- 57:26Speaker 10: I'm happy for players and they can kind of go
- 57:28Speaker 10: out on.
- 57:28Speaker 4: Their own terms, God willing, no injuries.
- 57:30Speaker 10: And so, uh, I guess he's got plenty left in
- 57:33Speaker 10: the tank for this year, even if he chooses to
- 57:34Speaker 10: hang it up after.
- 57:36Speaker 2: Real life, they are real players and real people, aren't they?
- 57:39Speaker 2: They're not just widgets.
- 57:40Speaker 4: Yes.
- 57:41Speaker 2: It's good to be reminded of that. Joey, what else
- 57:46Speaker 2: stood out to you about week one across the league?
- 57:48Speaker 2: I know Yahoo has you covering the league at large
- 57:51Speaker 2: and your thoughts on what happened week one.
- 57:54Speaker 10: Yeah, I'll give you two quick hits and then one
- 57:56Speaker 10: random story. I feel like that's what we've got to
- 57:58Speaker 10: do every week. I'm going to tell you this, Greg.
- 57:59Speaker 10: Like one story of someone I covered years ago that
- 58:02Speaker 10: I had flashes that you might not realize if you're
- 58:05Speaker 10: watching the league at work. So before we get to that,
- 58:08Speaker 10: Rams being last in the division, I mean, who saw
- 58:10Speaker 10: that coming out? So I think that I get it's
- 58:13Speaker 10: one week. I get it was in Australia. I still
- 58:16Speaker 10: think that you take that and you pair with Miles
- 58:18Speaker 10: Garrett going on injured reserve and to get that knee
- 58:20Speaker 10: taken care of.
- 58:21Speaker 4: And you do have to ask questions.
- 58:23Speaker 10: I think there are teams, like I would say Seattle,
- 58:25Speaker 10: where one guy goes out or two guys go out
- 58:28Speaker 10: and you're not so dependent on those stars. And I
- 58:32Speaker 10: think the Rams are a team that really built around
- 58:34Speaker 10: a few players. And now one of them is out
- 58:36Speaker 10: for four weeks. The second thing I'll give you is
- 58:38Speaker 10: Bears offense. I'm not suggesting they're going to have 59
- 58:40Speaker 10: points every week, but I do think that when I
- 58:43Speaker 10: look at the Bengals defense, or by the way, boy,
- 58:45Speaker 10: I'm off a great week. I think that the Bengals
- 58:48Speaker 10: are probably not going to be as high flying video
- 58:51Speaker 10: game this year because their defense is going to take
- 58:53Speaker 10: some of the pressure off the offense. But Chicago is
- 58:55Speaker 10: the exact opposite. I visited 19 teams between training camp
- 58:58Speaker 10: and OTAs. No teams offense and defense were as far
- 59:01Speaker 10: apart on the day that I was there, which snapshot, obviously,
- 59:04Speaker 10: it's not every day of camp.
- 59:06Speaker 4: As the Chicago Bears.
- 59:07Speaker 10: And so while I don't think Chicago is going to
- 59:09Speaker 10: keep having $ 59 points every week, their offense, both because
- 59:12Speaker 10: they're able to do it and because they're going to
- 59:14Speaker 10: need to do it with what their defense can do,
- 59:16Speaker 10: will continue to.
- 59:17Speaker 4: Have high scoring outputs. And then my last random factoid
- 59:20Speaker 4: for you. The New York Jets, you.
- 59:22Speaker 10: Might have heard, got a win this week against the
- 59:24Speaker 10: Tennessee Titans. My favorite play from that game is on
- 59:28Speaker 10: special teams, a fumble recovery by their cornerback, Quantez Stiggers,
- 59:32Speaker 10: who I wrote a feature on a couple of years
- 59:33Speaker 10: ago because Quantez... is the fascinating NFL player who never
- 59:37Speaker 10: played one snap of college football. He instead, because of
- 59:40Speaker 10: a confluence of circumstances, including COVID and losing his father, left.
- 59:45Speaker 4: Campus shortly after, ends up in an arena football league.
- 59:48Speaker 10: And then the Canadian Football League had such a great
- 59:50Speaker 10: year in the Canadian Football League that the Jets drafted
- 59:53Speaker 10: him on the third day.
- 59:54Speaker 4: And now he's making a fumble recovery.
- 59:57Speaker 10: On special teams in the Jets' first win. So I
- 1:00:00Speaker 10: always love those stories, and we might not see them
- 1:00:02Speaker 10: when we're looking, but shout out to him.
- 1:00:04Speaker 2: Well, how did you come across that story? Just knowing
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: his background.
- 1:00:10Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:00:10Speaker 10: When they drafted him, just the idea of like, this
- 1:00:12Speaker 10: guy's never played college football. And the crazier part of
- 1:00:15Speaker 10: that is when I was right, he was working at
- 1:00:17Speaker 10: like a car wash station and, Days before the draft still,
- 1:00:21Speaker 10: because he's like, I got to make money until I
- 1:00:22Speaker 10: make it to the NFL. If I make it to
- 1:00:24Speaker 10: the NFL, it's just so rare that we see someone
- 1:00:26Speaker 10: who like legitimately was trying to support his family by
- 1:00:29Speaker 10: working at a high powered car wash in the days
- 1:00:32Speaker 10: before he got drafted because he didn't have that college career.
- 1:00:36Speaker 10: I mean, even before NIL money, but even now, especially
- 1:00:38Speaker 10: now with it. So he's got a super unusual path
- 1:00:42Speaker 10: to the NFL. And when I write a story like that,
- 1:00:44Speaker 10: even if you don't root for the team to win,
- 1:00:46Speaker 10: you root for that player to succeed.
- 1:00:47Speaker 4: And you kind of wonder, are they going to be
- 1:00:48Speaker 4: able to make it?
- 1:00:49Speaker 10: And I think this is year three for him in
- 1:00:51Speaker 10: the NFL.
- 1:00:52Speaker 2: And what do you know?
- 1:00:53Speaker 4: He is creating a takeaway for his team.
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: Look at that. That's a great story. You were all
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: over the Saints linebackers. And I was a superstar with
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: the Eagles. It was a special teams player.
- 1:01:04Speaker 3: Yes. I'm kind of crying back here, man. This is
- 1:01:11Speaker 3: really good.
- 1:01:13Speaker 2: 19 camps. Tell us about that. I saw you at
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: the tail end of that. But how long did you
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: go without seeing your husband? Did you get a break?
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: 19 camps in 20 days? What were you doing for August?
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: That's crazy.
- 1:01:25Speaker 10: Yeah, so three OTAs, 16 training camps. And 13 of
- 1:01:29Speaker 10: those training camp stops on one straight trip. So I
- 1:01:33Speaker 10: did not see my husband for 23 days. Shout out
- 1:01:36Speaker 10: to Simeon for being supportive of it. But it was
- 1:01:39Speaker 10: kind of wild. I did the Midwest, and you kind
- 1:01:41Speaker 10: of see how many you can get in. So flew
- 1:01:44Speaker 10: to Minnesota, drove from Minnesota to Green Bay to Chicago
- 1:01:47Speaker 10: to Cincinnati.
- 1:01:49Speaker 4: The Steelers and the Trove to Cleveland. I think I
- 1:01:51Speaker 4: got everyone there.
- 1:01:52Speaker 10: Um, can't remember if I said it in Indianapolis and
- 1:01:55Speaker 10: then flew out to California for Rams, Chargers, Cowboys up
- 1:01:58Speaker 10: to you guys in Seattle. Then the Niners and the
- 1:02:00Speaker 10: Broncos came back home to New York and then train and, and, uh,
- 1:02:06Speaker 10: rented car for the Ravens commanders and Eagles.
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: And then flew back out to Seattle for the first
- 1:02:12Speaker 2: NFL game.
- 1:02:13Speaker 4: Yeah, so then Seattle and then Kansas City. So I
- 1:02:17Speaker 4: think I'm home for a bit now.
- 1:02:19Speaker 2: It's kind of wild.
- 1:02:19Speaker 4: Last night my husband's like, what are you doing here?
- 1:02:22Speaker 4: I'm like, that's a fair question.
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: At least you do the way back. So where are
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: you this weekend? You're home watching all the games. What
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: are you looking for in week two?
- 1:02:30Speaker 10: This weekend I am home, and I am very curious
- 1:02:33Speaker 10: how Drake May rallies back from that week one performance.
- 1:02:36Speaker 4: He's got the Pittsburgh Steelers up.
- 1:02:38Speaker 10: They're coming off a win, and TJ Watt's coming off
- 1:02:41Speaker 10: a pick six line of scrimmage interception.
- 1:02:43Speaker 4: So I'll be interested in that.
- 1:02:44Speaker 10: I think we're all a little bit curious for better
- 1:02:46Speaker 10: and for worse on Cleveland's. uh not only is Deshaun
- 1:02:50Speaker 10: Watson's last game to play before the Browns go back
- 1:02:53Speaker 10: home and I think it will be a bit of
- 1:02:54Speaker 10: a referendum game and they'll also be playing against the
- 1:02:57Speaker 10: Buccaneers and Baker Mayfield so that will look even more
- 1:03:01Speaker 10: interesting Cowboys defense of course um and I want to
- 1:03:05Speaker 10: see hey Caleb Williams against Brian Flores and the Minnesota
- 1:03:07Speaker 10: Vikings what's Caleb going to do that it's probably not
- 1:03:10Speaker 10: going to be 59 points but how good does.
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: It look Joey appreciate you it's great to have you
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: back I'm glad we can do this every week and
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: We'll get you some pizza or something out of it.
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: But thanks a lot. Enjoy home for a while.
- 1:03:23Speaker 4: Greg, Jessamyn, great to be on with you. I'll talk
- 1:03:24Speaker 4: to you next week.
- 1:03:26Speaker 2: Jory Epstein, the senior NFL writer for Yahoo Sports. I
- 1:03:29Speaker 2: saw her at training camp last month, and then I
- 1:03:33Speaker 2: saw her last week at the Seahawks-Patriots game. She's around
- 1:03:35Speaker 2: the NFL. She does a weekly podcast for Yahoo Sports.
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: You can find her at yahoosports.com. And her weekly story
- 1:03:42Speaker 2: is about whatever. She does a lot of Jets-Giants because
- 1:03:44Speaker 2: she's in– New York says she goes to a lot
- 1:03:47Speaker 2: of home games and picks off teams that are coming
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: through New York as well, but she travels quite a bit.
- 1:03:50Speaker 4: She's a New York gal.
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: I like her. Yes, she is.
- 1:03:54Speaker 3: I know she's from the Texas area, but I know
- 1:03:57Speaker 3: that she's also a New York-based person.
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: Yes, she's lived in New York now for a while.
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: She used to be a Dallas Cowboys beat writer back
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: in the day and then covered the Cowboys for Yahoo
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: for back at the time, too. I've seen her around
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: at Combines and Super Bowls, and I've asked her, hey,
- 1:04:10Speaker 2: why don't you come on our show? kind enough to
- 1:04:12Speaker 2: join us again for this season. So she'll be on
- 1:04:14Speaker 2: every Tuesday. Normally she'll be on Tuesdays. We had her
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: on Wednesday this week because she was traveling back from
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: Kansas City to Manhattan.
- 1:04:20Speaker 3: And you were traveling back from Hawaii.
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: I was traveling back from Honolulu last night, so that's
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: why we did it today. But normally Jory will be
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: on at 11 o'clock every Tuesday to recap what she
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: saw on the previous weekend in the NFL and then
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: looking ahead to the coming week. Thanks to Jory Epstein.
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: You'll hear from her every week in our NFL. We
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: also have Omar excuse me, for Farhan Lalji of TSN Canada,
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: we expect to have weekly guests on NFL coverage on
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: Thursdays or Fridays during the week is probably going to
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: be the days that we target for him. 49451, the
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: Tacoma Dodge text line. Your chance to be a part
- 1:04:55Speaker 2: of the show is coming up next. If you have
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: any talkbacks on the iHeartRadio app or the 933KJR. com website,
- 1:05:01Speaker 2: the little red microphone button, we'll play those back next.
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: And then at 1135, I'm talking hyper-local factor fictions. pick
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: for this slot.
- 1:05:11Speaker 3: Keep on teasing, Greg.
- 1:05:12Speaker 2: Keep on teasing. I think you know where I might
- 1:05:14Speaker 2: be headed on that one. I have an idea. All
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: that's coming up next on 93.3 KJRFM. And let me
- 1:05:33Speaker 2: go manage from spreadsheets. Would he? I'm telling you... There
- 1:05:38Speaker 2: ain't going to be no Joe Maddens walking in here
- 1:05:41Speaker 2: under the current regime and playing the ball the way
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: they want to be playing. That ain't happening. No way.
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: Two things. 253 says, the manners are a joke. They
- 1:05:50Speaker 2: need sweeping changes to players, coaches, and management. Yes, even Jerry.
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: And two, Seattle needs to tell Adam Silver and the
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: NBA to flip off. He didn't say flip or she
- 1:06:01Speaker 2: didn't say flip. I am done caring about the NBA
- 1:06:04Speaker 2: and whether or not the Sonics come back. The NBA
- 1:06:07Speaker 2: doesn't deserve this fan base. And I get this because
- 1:06:12Speaker 2: we're getting jerked around here.
- 1:06:13Speaker 3: Yeah, for what, 20 years?
- 1:06:16Speaker 2: 20 years now. And 18 years since they left in 2008.
- 1:06:21Speaker 2: And they shouldn't have left in the first place. It
- 1:06:23Speaker 2: was part of David Stern's FU to the politicians in
- 1:06:28Speaker 2: Seattle who didn't want to hand him over a brand
- 1:06:30Speaker 2: new arena. And he went down to Olympia and Frank
- 1:06:32Speaker 2: Chop and the legislators told him to go pound sand.
- 1:06:34Speaker 2: And he said, oh, okay, I'll fix you up. And
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: he arranged this sale to Clay Bennett and the Carpetbaggers
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: of Oklahoma. And that's how we don't have a team.
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: Became personal for the commissioner. Now you have Adam Silver.
- 1:06:47Speaker 3: Which is just so petty.
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: I know.
- 1:06:49Speaker 9: It is.
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: It's so petty. And here we are, 18 years later,
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: trying to get a team back. And now we're getting told, well,
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: maybe the end of the year. First of all, the
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: other news I got out of yesterday from Adam Silver
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: in the comments about expansion is that second option is
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: up in Marysville or Stanwood or wherever the hell that
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: second arena would be, is not an option to the NBA.
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: It's one roof sports and entertainments, NBA ready. He made
- 1:07:16Speaker 2: a point of saying that building is NBA ready.
- 1:07:18Speaker 3: Todd Lightwicky also specifically built it that way.
- 1:07:22Speaker 2: Correct. The Oakville group, Todd Lightwicky's brother, they made it
- 1:07:26Speaker 2: to NBA specs. They made it so that they could
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: turn key an NBA franchise right into there. Extra locker rooms,
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: sight lines, suites, the whole nine. All the things a
- 1:07:36Speaker 2: key arena didn't have back in the day.
- 1:07:37Speaker 3: The only thing that was the same is the roof.
- 1:07:40Speaker 2: Correct. And that's only because they had to do it
- 1:07:42Speaker 2: because it's a National Historic Site. And you're not allowed
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: to touch that roof because it's got National Register Protection
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: as a National Historic Site from the World's Fair back
- 1:07:51Speaker 2: in 1962. That's the reason that they had to lift
- 1:07:54Speaker 2: the entire roof and build the arena underneath it.
- 1:07:56Speaker 3: And they did it.
- 1:07:57Speaker 2: And they did it. And they built it to a
- 1:07:59Speaker 2: billion-dollar palace that the NBA says we can play tomorrow.
- 1:08:02Speaker 2: But now we've got to wait for Las Vegas to
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: get its act together and to get an arena and
- 1:08:07Speaker 2: to get owners.
- 1:08:07Speaker 3: Does Vegas ever get their act together? I mean, I've
- 1:08:09Speaker 3: been there a couple times, and I've lost years of
- 1:08:11Speaker 3: my life because of it.
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: Now it's time for Fact or Fiction, your chance to
- 1:08:16Speaker 2: win $ 1, 000. We're set to go. Glad you're with us.
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: It's your shot at our weekly $ 1, 000 and the $ 10, 000
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: grand prize.
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: It's Fact or Fiction.
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: Proudly presented by Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel, where every
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: day feels lucky. Fact or Fiction is on.
- 1:08:33Speaker 2: Sports Radio 93.3, KJR FM. All right, what is this?
- 1:08:50Speaker 2: What are we headed to now?
- 1:08:52Speaker 3: I think this is your pick because I had to
- 1:08:55Speaker 3: dig through the coffers to find this one, Greg.
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: You did. I did.
- 1:09:00Speaker 3: So you tell us what it is. This is the
- 1:09:03Speaker 3: Eastern Washington Fight Song.
- 1:09:05Speaker 2: The Eags are coming from Cheney into Seattle on Saturday.
- 1:09:09Speaker 2: 4.15 kickoff right here on 93.3 KJFM, your home of
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: the Huskies. First, let me set aside while we listen
- 1:09:16Speaker 2: to the Eastern Washington Eagles Fight Song. Let me remind
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: you of what this is. Factor Fiction is sponsored by
- 1:09:21Speaker 2: Lucky Eagle Casino Resort. You win $ 1, 000. Your chance to
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: win $ 1, 000 this week. All you've got to do is
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: win one time. We're going to pick 20 games in college.
- 1:09:33Speaker 2: We're not going to be degenerates and pick high school.
- 1:09:36Speaker 2: NFL and college. We're going to pick up to 20
- 1:09:39Speaker 2: games this week. If you just win once, you're entered
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: in the drawing. We'll have Monday. All the winners get
- 1:09:45Speaker 2: put in a hat. Pick one. The winner will win
- 1:09:48Speaker 2: $ 1, 000 this week, but it behooves you to play as
- 1:09:52Speaker 2: many times as you can because the winner who has
- 1:09:56Speaker 2: the most wins at the end of the season will
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: win $ 10, 000 large from the Lucky Eagle Casino and Resort. Okay,
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: so we play in the Eastern Washington Eagles fight song. Why?
- 1:10:06Speaker 2: Because the Eagles are coming across the pass. They're playing
- 1:10:08Speaker 2: on Saturday at Montlake. They're an FCS school, so Vegas
- 1:10:12Speaker 2: is saying, well, Big Ten team against an FCS team
- 1:10:15Speaker 2: that's lost two of its first three games. Let's set
- 1:10:19Speaker 2: the point spread at 43 points.
- 1:10:23Speaker 3: That's a ridiculous spread.
- 1:10:25Speaker 2: Can Washington even score 43 points? I heard Cam Cleland
- 1:10:31Speaker 2: on my way in. The problems they had barely beating
- 1:10:34Speaker 2: Utah State. The problem they have with a very young
- 1:10:36Speaker 2: offensive line. A brand new center. A true freshman left tackle.
- 1:10:40Speaker 2: DeMond Williams being their leading rusher and throwing the ball
- 1:10:43Speaker 2: 41 times. How they need to fix that. There's some
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: stuff going on in Montlake on their offense right now.
- 1:10:49Speaker 2: And Vegas is giving 43 points. I'm not even sure
- 1:10:53Speaker 2: the Huskies can score 43 on anybody, including Eastern Washington.
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: The Eags, meanwhile, the Fighting Cooper Cubs, they're 1-2. I
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: love that.
- 1:11:02Speaker 3: You call them that. He smoked us when he was there.
- 1:11:06Speaker 2: They smoked a lot of people with Cooper Cubs. The
- 1:11:09Speaker 2: Walter Payton Award winner. They lost at Northern Arizona on
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: the opening game. They're nationally ranked Northern Arizona in FCS
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: after leading 24-3. The Eagles blew a 24-3 lead at
- 1:11:19Speaker 2: Northern Arizona and lost 34-27. In week two, they beat
- 1:11:23Speaker 2: Northern Iowa, a perennial, usually a playoff team or on
- 1:11:27Speaker 2: the fringe of a playoff team in FCS. They beat
- 1:11:28Speaker 2: them by 10. And then last week, they got bodied
- 1:11:31Speaker 2: at South Dakota. They went up to Vermilion and the
- 1:11:34Speaker 2: Dakota Dome and got beat 41-23 and allowed 517 yards.
- 1:11:38Speaker 2: But still, can this Husky team even score 43 points
- 1:11:42Speaker 2: let alone beat Eastern Washington by 43? I say no.
- 1:11:46Speaker 2: I say give me 43 points because why not? How
- 1:11:49Speaker 2: often do you get 43 points? Give me Eastern plus
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: 43 on Saturday at Husky Stadium against Washington. If you
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: agree with me, you think the Eags can cover 43 points,
- 1:12:01Speaker 2: you think they'll lose by 42 or fewer points, text
- 1:12:04Speaker 2: FACT to 49451. If you disagree with me and you
- 1:12:07Speaker 2: think that suddenly DeMond Williams and that offense is going
- 1:12:10Speaker 2: to be like Marcus Tuiasosopo's offense back in the day,
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: and they're going to boat race the Eagles by more
- 1:12:15Speaker 2: than 43, meaning the Tuskees beat Eastern by 44 or
- 1:12:19Speaker 2: more points. If you think that's going to happen, text
- 1:12:21Speaker 2: FICTION to 49451. All you've got to do is win once,
- 1:12:25Speaker 2: and you've entered in a chance to win $ 1, 000 this
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: week from the Lucky Eagle Casino.
- 1:12:31Speaker 3: Spread that big.
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: I'm sorry.
- 1:12:32Speaker 3: That's what I usually look at. I only do NFL.
- 1:12:34Speaker 3: I don't do college. But when I... When I see
- 1:12:38Speaker 3: a spread like that, I'm sorry. There's no way that's
- 1:12:43Speaker 3: going to happen.
- 1:12:44Speaker 2: I can't think so.
- 1:12:44Speaker 3: It's just not going to.
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: I can't think so. I mean, it looks like on
- 1:12:48Speaker 2: paper they just said, oh, Big Ten team against an
- 1:12:50Speaker 2: FCS team, right? Oh, and by the way, the FCS
- 1:12:52Speaker 2: team is 1-2, so let's put it 43.
- 1:12:54Speaker 3: I know, but Vegas knows weird things.
- 1:12:57Speaker 2: Yeah, they do. They do. Makes me very uncomfortable. Like
- 1:13:01Speaker 2: the Texas-Ohio State game. Ohio State was a one-and-a-half point underdog.
- 1:13:05Speaker 2: They lost by one. How freaky was that after beating 23-3?
- 1:13:10Speaker 2: By the way, your Cougs are a 37.5 point favorite
- 1:13:12Speaker 2: at home against Duquesne.
- 1:13:13Speaker 3: Well, Duquesne has not had the very fortuitous season so far.
- 1:13:20Speaker 3: This is a get-right game for us for sure. And
- 1:13:23Speaker 3: the start to three straight home games. So they need
- 1:13:27Speaker 3: that very much.
- 1:13:28Speaker 2: I saw the Cougs are giving. If you have a
- 1:13:30Speaker 2: Toyota and you bring the keys to the gate at
- 1:13:34Speaker 2: Martin Stadium on Saturday, you get in free. It's a
- 1:13:37Speaker 2: Toyota promotion.
- 1:13:40Speaker 3: I have a Toyota, but I get in free because
- 1:13:42Speaker 3: I'm working. I get paid to be there.
- 1:13:44Speaker 2: If you want to go in free to the game
- 1:13:46Speaker 2: in Pullman on Saturday and you have a Toyota, just
- 1:13:49Speaker 2: take your keys to the ticket office and you get
- 1:13:51Speaker 2: free tickets.
- 1:13:52Speaker 3: I did not know that.
- 1:13:55Speaker 2: I saw that last night on my flight home. I
- 1:13:56Speaker 2: was doing research for a Seahawks story and I came
- 1:13:59Speaker 2: across that. I was like, what? All you need are
- 1:14:02Speaker 2: keys to a Toyota and you get in free. So
- 1:14:03Speaker 2: there you go. Duquesne and Washington State. That's a 1230
- 1:14:06Speaker 2: game The Huskies are hosting Eastern Washington at Husky Stadium
- 1:14:10Speaker 2: in Montlake at 4.15. That's when our kickoff will be
- 1:14:13Speaker 2: right here with Jessamyn. With Jessamyn. No, sorry. You're being poor.
- 1:14:17Speaker 3: No, I'm in my darkness retreat back here by myself.
- 1:14:21Speaker 2: At least Woodward will have a call with Cam Cleland
- 1:14:23Speaker 2: and Dave Softy-Moller at 4.15. Washington, Eastern Washington. You have
- 1:14:27Speaker 2: 12 minutes now to text them. Now I'm on more
- 1:14:29Speaker 2: like 10 minutes because I've been yapping. So 49451. Eastern
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: Washington plus 43 points against Washington. If you agree, text
- 1:14:37Speaker 2: FACT to 49451. If you disagree, text FICTION to 49451.
- 1:14:40Speaker 2: Up next, Ian Furness from the Virginia Mason Athletic Center
- 1:14:44Speaker 2: right out here at Seahawks headquarters on 93.3 KJRFF. Hi,
- 1:14:58Speaker 2: welcome back. Greg Bell now joined by Ian Furness. I'm
- 1:15:02Speaker 2: here at Seahawks headquarters right up the road from Maple Valley. Actually,
- 1:15:06Speaker 2: it's not quite up the road, is it?
- 1:15:08Speaker 9: It's a little bit up.
- 1:15:09Speaker 5: I'm telling you right now, it's so much better than
- 1:15:12Speaker 5: having to go to the studio today and going to Seattle.
- 1:15:15Speaker 9: It's about a 25-minute drive.
- 1:15:17Speaker 2: It took me 45 minutes to get out of the
- 1:15:18Speaker 2: U District today.
- 1:15:19Speaker 9: Well, because there was that crash on I-5, right? Yeah,
- 1:15:20Speaker 9: there was a truck.
- 1:15:21Speaker 5: Yeah, they blocked everything southbound I-5 during rush hour.
- 1:15:24Speaker 9: That seems less than optimal. that's uh that's not.
- 1:15:26Speaker 2: Good yeah that's not good at all yeah that's yeah
- 1:15:29Speaker 2: it was suboptimal.
- 1:15:30Speaker 5: Yeah no when when they said hey can you uh
- 1:15:32Speaker 5: get down to vmac bring greg some equipment and just
- 1:15:35Speaker 5: do the show there because we're gonna get riley mills
- 1:15:36Speaker 5: on at noon okay i'm in and in and in
- 1:15:39Speaker 5: and i don't.
- 1:15:40Speaker 9: Have to drive to seattle 100.
- 1:15:41Speaker 5: Let's go here we are right we're not sweating outside.
- 1:15:45Speaker 2: Exactly like training camp riley mills had a prominent role
- 1:15:48Speaker 2: i thought in the defensive line i did too and
- 1:15:50Speaker 2: he was in like First quarter, first drive rotation.
- 1:15:53Speaker 5: You know, he's an interesting guy because on draft day,
- 1:15:57Speaker 5: day three of draft day two years ago, 2025, when
- 1:16:01Speaker 5: we're all sitting upstairs here at the Virginia Mason Athletic
- 1:16:03Speaker 5: Center and they draft the guy out of Notre Dame,
- 1:16:06Speaker 5: nose tackle, defensive tackle, Riley Mills from Notre Dame.
- 1:16:08Speaker 9: We're like, yeah, we remember that guy. Oh, he got hurt,
- 1:16:10Speaker 9: didn't he? Yeah, he got hurt.
- 1:16:12Speaker 5: And I remember how they were just– and they do
- 1:16:14Speaker 5: this with a lot of guys, some more than others,
- 1:16:16Speaker 5: but speaking in glowing terms about Riley Mills and how, oh,
- 1:16:19Speaker 5: he would have been– you know, a day one, day
- 1:16:21Speaker 5: two pick, blah, blah, blah, probably a day two pick,
- 1:16:24Speaker 5: and we're like, okay.
- 1:16:26Speaker 9: And I think, okay, pump his tires, that's great.
- 1:16:30Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:16:30Speaker 5: But I think what we saw, you know, in limited
- 1:16:33Speaker 5: appearances at the end of the regular season and then
- 1:16:35Speaker 5: certainly in the Super Bowl and then in training camp
- 1:16:37Speaker 5: and then in week one, there's no doubt this guy
- 1:16:39Speaker 5: would have– they got a steal with him where they
- 1:16:41Speaker 5: got him.
- 1:16:42Speaker 2: He's like a five or six defensive lineman for them
- 1:16:45Speaker 2: right now.
- 1:16:45Speaker 5: Yeah, and just powerful defensively. So, yeah, I'm excited to
- 1:16:50Speaker 5: talk to him coming up. And, you know, we saw
- 1:16:52Speaker 5: him in hard knocks with the little test of strength.
- 1:16:55Speaker 9: Was that Cable Dew? I think it was Cable Dew, right?
- 1:16:57Speaker 2: Yeah, it was Cable Dew.
- 1:16:57Speaker 9: Or was it Richmond?
- 1:16:58Speaker 2: It might have been Mason Richmond. It might have been Richmond, yeah.
- 1:17:00Speaker 2: With the sledgehammer.
- 1:17:01Speaker 9: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:17:02Speaker 2: The players, by the way, think that's a bad idea.
- 1:17:04Speaker 2: They don't want that to be a– a couple I've
- 1:17:06Speaker 2: talked to said they don't want them to become a president. No.
- 1:17:08Speaker 9: No.
- 1:17:11Speaker 2: They'd rather not.
- 1:17:11Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:17:13Speaker 2: So my fact or fiction, I just picked Eastern Washington
- 1:17:16Speaker 2: plus 43 against the Huskies.
- 1:17:18Speaker 9: Whoa.
- 1:17:19Speaker 2: Can the Huskies score 43 points? That's what I'm wondering.
- 1:17:22Speaker 5: Boy, they're going to– you know what's an interesting– The
- 1:17:25Speaker 5: Eags aren't terrible. There's three schools locally in the Northwest
- 1:17:28Speaker 5: that are playing FCS opponents that have a chance.
- 1:17:30Speaker 9: To really roll up scores.
- 1:17:31Speaker 2: Oregon, Portland State.
- 1:17:32Speaker 9: Oregon, Portland State Friday. Eastern and Washington on Saturday. Wazoo's
- 1:17:35Speaker 9: got Duquesne.
- 1:17:36Speaker 2: That's right.
- 1:17:36Speaker 5: And all three of those offenses, for very different reasons,
- 1:17:39Speaker 5: our team obviously at the bottom of what people care about,
- 1:17:41Speaker 5: but all three offenses have been less than good so far.
- 1:17:45Speaker 5: And I think in the case of Oregon, they're going
- 1:17:49Speaker 5: to get zero tests from Portland State.
- 1:17:52Speaker 7: But.
- 1:17:54Speaker 5: And that's, by the way, like 57 points. Yeah, I
- 1:17:56Speaker 5: looked at that. Why is it even on the board?
- 1:17:59Speaker 5: Eastern's going to play hard. You never know with their
- 1:18:02Speaker 5: best team what they've got, but they'll play hard.
- 1:18:05Speaker 2: They got smacked around pretty good by South Dakota, 41-23,
- 1:18:08Speaker 2: and I looked at the stats and.
- 1:18:09Speaker 9: 517 yards allowed.
- 1:18:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:18:12Speaker 5: And Jed, anytime Jed has an opportunity to run up
- 1:18:15Speaker 5: a score, especially against anybody in the Northwest, he does.
- 1:18:19Speaker 2: But let's face it, they want to get right before
- 1:18:21Speaker 2: the Big Ten. Minnesota comes in here.
- 1:18:23Speaker 9: Yeah, and I think.
- 1:18:23Speaker 2: They want to feel right.
- 1:18:24Speaker 9: Yeah, they've got issues on the offensive line.
- 1:18:27Speaker 2: They do.
- 1:18:28Speaker 5: You know, two freshmen starting a left tackle. Yeah, I
- 1:18:31Speaker 5: find that one to be an interesting one. Like, today's
- 1:18:34Speaker 5: power four, unless your name's Caden Proctor or something, I
- 1:18:38Speaker 5: know they think really highly of the kid. Are you
- 1:18:41Speaker 5: telling me that's your best option as a power four
- 1:18:43Speaker 5: Big Ten team? Left tackle, 18 years old. Sometimes you're
- 1:18:50Speaker 5: not the smartest guy.
- 1:18:52Speaker 2: In the room. What? Wait a minute. Actually, Greg, that's
- 1:18:57Speaker 2: the point.
- 1:18:59Speaker 9: They bought a player.
- 1:19:00Speaker 2: They did.
- 1:19:00Speaker 9: And now you've got to play the player.
- 1:19:01Speaker 2: That's true.
- 1:19:02Speaker 5: I mean, the whole Protect College Sports Act thing, which
- 1:19:04Speaker 5: everybody's freaked out about.
- 1:19:05Speaker 2: Play the player so he doesn't leave after this when
- 1:19:08Speaker 2: he doesn't play.
- 1:19:08Speaker 9: Play him Don't let him leave. Make him feel like
- 1:19:11Speaker 9: he's part of the program right from the start. And,
- 1:19:14Speaker 9: you know, but I don't know. This world we're living
- 1:19:16Speaker 9: in is something else right now.
- 1:19:19Speaker 2: By the way, the Kraken, the training camp has started,
- 1:19:21Speaker 2: hasn't it? Tomorrow. Tomorrow. Tomorrow's day one.
- 1:19:23Speaker 5: Media day was yesterday. Well, internal media day was yesterday.
- 1:19:26Speaker 5: First day of camp is tomorrow. They're doing medicals and
- 1:19:28Speaker 5: stuff today. Testing and all that today. We'll be out
- 1:19:30Speaker 5: there tomorrow doing the show at the Kraken Community Iceplex.
- 1:19:34Speaker 9: They announced their new captains and alternate captains today, so.
- 1:19:38Speaker 9: which is good.
- 1:19:38Speaker 5: But, yeah, we'll be out there tomorrow. So a little
- 1:19:40Speaker 5: Seahawks day, hockey tomorrow, college football sprinkled in as well.
- 1:19:43Speaker 2: So besides Riley Mills, what do you got on the show?
- 1:19:46Speaker 5: Speaking of protect college sports, we're going to check in
- 1:19:49Speaker 5: with Stuart Mandel at 120 today. But we'll mostly talk
- 1:19:52Speaker 5: college football, like mostly get into Oregon struggles. I'm fascinated
- 1:19:55Speaker 5: by what that Texas-Ohio State game meant. The other stuff,
- 1:19:59Speaker 5: I'm done with that, Arch Manning and Holly Roe and
- 1:20:01Speaker 5: all that stuff. So we'll move on from that and
- 1:20:03Speaker 5: talk actual football on the field. And, man, what a
- 1:20:06Speaker 5: game this weekend. LSU going to Mississippi.
- 1:20:10Speaker 2: So comparable. Man.
- 1:20:13Speaker 9: I mean, it is.
- 1:20:15Speaker 5: We'll get into that with him. I think I'm going
- 1:20:17Speaker 5: to make that my factor fiction pick.
- 1:20:19Speaker 2: That would be a pretty high-profile one.
- 1:20:22Speaker 5: Trinidad Chambliss might be the best quarterback in the country.
- 1:20:25Speaker 5: And the emotions in that building are going to be
- 1:20:27Speaker 5: something else. But I think LSU is a true national
- 1:20:29Speaker 5: title contender, and a lot of his best players are
- 1:20:31Speaker 5: guys who have played at Ole Miss.
- 1:20:32Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:20:33Speaker 9: I mean, you won't find a more emotional game this year.
- 1:20:36Speaker 2: Back in Ohio, they're talking about Ryan Day's decision to
- 1:20:39Speaker 2: try to play defense against Texas at the end instead
- 1:20:41Speaker 2: of letting him score and get the ball back with
- 1:20:43Speaker 2: a minute and a half left. I knew what he
- 1:20:45Speaker 2: was doing. I mean, they had a 23-3 lead on
- 1:20:47Speaker 2: that team. So I think I agree with what he
- 1:20:50Speaker 2: did there. Plus, as a competitor, you want to give
- 1:20:53Speaker 2: your guys a chance to win the game.
- 1:20:54Speaker 9: Right.
- 1:20:55Speaker 5: I always hate this word that's used all the time,
- 1:21:02Speaker 5: the analytics word.
- 1:21:04Speaker 9: The biggest offender is probably Troy Aker. Analytics say go
- 1:21:07Speaker 9: for it here.
- 1:21:08Speaker 2: What analytics?
- 1:21:10Speaker 9: You mean just.
- 1:21:10Speaker 2: Just the catch-all? Common sense? Like, yeah. What are you
- 1:21:14Speaker 2: talking about?
- 1:21:15Speaker 5: But yeah, no, there's... This is kind of the last
- 1:21:18Speaker 5: weekend of only one or two really great games because
- 1:21:21Speaker 5: then we get to conference play after this weekend. But LSU,
- 1:21:24Speaker 5: we'll get that with Stu. And then 1 o'clock, John Harlow,
- 1:21:28Speaker 5: Washington State Athletic.
- 1:21:29Speaker 2: Oh, good.
- 1:21:29Speaker 9: I'm going to sit down with him. Honestly, one of the...
- 1:21:32Speaker 9: Big thing I want to ask him, and so this
- 1:21:34Speaker 9: is kind of... Oh, you're talking too much Cougars.
- 1:21:37Speaker 3: No, no.
- 1:21:37Speaker 5: The one thing I want to get to right off
- 1:21:38Speaker 5: the get-go, the whole Protect College Sports Act, what is it? Honestly,
- 1:21:43Speaker 5: I think there's a lot because there's just a lot
- 1:21:47Speaker 5: to it. And so I'm going to have him break
- 1:21:48Speaker 5: it down because most schools are for it, whether Power 4.
- 1:21:51Speaker 9: Or Group of Six.
- 1:21:53Speaker 5: The only people who seem to be against it are
- 1:21:54Speaker 5: the NAACP and player agents right now.
- 1:21:57Speaker 9: So we'll get into that a little bit.
- 1:21:59Speaker 2: That's Ian Furness here from Seahawks headquarters. I'm heading into
- 1:22:02Speaker 2: the room next door to listen to Mike McDonald evade questions.
- 1:22:05Speaker 9: We'll be monitoring that, too, by the way.
- 1:22:07Speaker 2: I'll be hearing some Donald questions getting evaded by the
- 1:22:10Speaker 2: head coach. Ian's up next from 12 until 3. Justin
- 1:22:14Speaker 2: McIntyre and I will be back at it tomorrow. I'll
- 1:22:16Speaker 2: be doing it right here from Seahawks on 93.3 KJRFM.
