- 0:39maybe driving in your car or going for a run?
- 0:42Wherever you are, friends, whoever you're with right now,
- 0:45so good that you have invited me to come into your day so that we
- 0:50can today read this short but epic reading.
- 0:55Where Moses dies, the end of the life of this incredible prophet,
- 0:59this man who is responsible for the penteuct, his first five
- 1:04books of the Bible authored by him in his tradition, by his
- 1:08authority. Phenomenal figure.
- 1:11And here we celebrate or mark the end of his life.
- 1:15So with that, let's read it, friends.
- 1:17It's a brief one, but it's a powerful 1.
- 1:19So let us enjoy this reading final of Deuteronomy.
- 1:24Deuteronomy chapter 34. Then Moses went up to Mount Nebo
- 1:39from the plains of Moab and climbed Pisgah Peak, which is
- 1:44across from Jericho. And the Lord showed him the
- 1:47whole land from Gilead as far as Dam, all the land of Naphtali,
- 1:53the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah,
- 1:57extending to the Mediterranean Sea, the Negev, the Jordan
- 2:01Valley with Jericho, the city of palms as far as Zoa.
- 2:05And the Lord said to Moses, This is the land I promised on oath
- 2:11to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. When I said, I will give it to
- 2:16your descendants, I have now allowed you to see it with your
- 2:20own eyes, but you will not enter the land.
- 2:25So Moses the servant of the Lord, died there in the land of
- 2:30Moab, just as the Lord had said. The Lord buried him in the
- 2:34valley near Bethpeo in Moab. But to this day no one knows the
- 2:39exact place. Moses was 120 years old when he
- 2:43died, yet his eyesight was clear and he was as strong as ever.
- 2:49The people of Israel mourned for Moses on the plains of Moab for
- 2:5330 days until the customary period of mourning was over.
- 2:58Now Joshua son of Nun was full of the Spirit of wisdom, for
- 3:02Moses had laid his hands on him. So the people of Israel obeyed
- 3:07him, doing just as the Lord had commanded Moses.
- 3:11There has never been another prophet in Israel like Moses
- 3:16whom the Lord knew face to face. The Lord sent him to perform all
- 3:21the miraculous signs and wonders in the land of Egypt against
- 3:24Pharaoh and all his servants and his entire land.
- 3:29With mighty power, Moses performed terrifying acts in the
- 3:34sight of all Israel. Our Lord, what a beautiful
- 3:48picture of you being with your people and you living with Moses
- 3:55in his time, knowing him, as the Scripture says, face to face.
- 4:02Our Lord, thank you for the intimate way that you journey
- 4:05with your people, that you journey with us, and that we
- 4:09know you face to face too, because you have given us Jesus
- 4:13and we look into the face of Jesus and we see you and what
- 4:17you are all about and your true character.
- 4:22Thank you for this revelation and thank you for the example of
- 4:26this man Moses, who served you diligently through the long
- 4:30years of his life. May we too be your servant of
- 4:34that calibre, serving you through all the days of our
- 4:38life. So today we recommit ourselves
- 4:41freshly to you, our Triune God, our loving Father, our kind
- 4:47Saviour and our ever present Spirit.
- 4:51We worship you now and always. Amen.
