- 0:02This is an Unspoiled Network podcast. This is spoil Me, covering one piece
- 0:12episodes four sixty one through four sixty three, the beginning of the war,
- 0:17Ace and Whitebeards passed, the force that could destroy the world, the power
- 0:23of the Tremor Tremor fruit, and an all consuming inferno, Admiral Akainu's power.
- 0:33In these episodes, we get a lineup of so many giant, overpowered
- 0:42maniacs that, frankly, I have some concerns for the state of the seabed,
- 0:51Like down to the bottom of the world, the core of the earth
- 0:55here, I don't know if everything's gonna make it. Welcome to spoil Me,
- 1:19Welcome to the show everyone. I am Natasha. Thank you very much
- 1:23to Florian for commissioning this episode and also for being very patient. I have
- 1:27had to reschedule, had a computer just completely shit the bed, basically,
- 1:34and we are going forward with a real sort of tentative hopefulness because I have
- 1:42a brand new system, guys, and I'm watching garage band struggle, and
- 1:47I'm starting to just think that garage band is the issue, and maybe I
- 1:51just need to get over it and learn a whole new editing system. These
- 1:57episodes, y'all, it is okay. See now, Floriin is in the
- 2:01chat saying the exact thing that I was thinking. This feels like Monarch's showing
- 2:07up. Those who don't know what I'm talking about, read the Cradle series.
- 2:12If you like one piece, you're gonna fucking love the Cradle series.
- 2:15And yet very similar energy we are. We are at the very least we're
- 2:21in the midst of stages right minimum. Maybe not quite monarchs yet, but
- 2:29like it's pretty close. If it is monarchs, they're just doing their light
- 2:34work. And this level of ability that these guys all just roll out.
- 2:44I keep thinking about. I have been covering for spoil Me, and I
- 2:46recently just completely wrapped it up. I was covering the Mage Errant book series,
- 2:53which is written by somebody who is uh also I believe a one fan,
- 3:00and he is a friend of Will White's as well, who wrote Cradle,
- 3:04and he gives his like characters some of the big time like great powers
- 3:10like abilities on this level. But the thing that he does is that he
- 3:15wants to let you know exactly how these powers work in terms of like the
- 3:21physics of what they affect. And all I could think for this series,
- 3:25like, you know, in these three episodes, the entire ocean gets frozen
- 3:31for like miles and I was like, if John Berce was writing this,
- 3:36he would have to explain to us exactly how deep the freeze goes, what
- 3:42wildlife was affected, and the way in which it would change the shape of
- 3:47the ecosystem for years to come. Like that's the kind of thing that he
- 3:52would get into. And you know, obviously in this show that is super
- 3:58not a concern, and I totally respect that it's not the vibe of the
- 4:00show. It shouldn't be included. But I did keep stop. I did
- 4:08keep on stopping and thinking like that feels like it's a problem, like a
- 4:13really you know, that's something that's going to be somebody out there in the
- 4:18wrong place at the wrong time, just trying to sail home with their fishing
- 4:23catch for the day and they just get frozen in place, and then they
- 4:29start to walk on the ice to get home, and somebody else decides to
- 4:32do away with the ice and now they're drowning. Like it just feels like
- 4:36all the little people get caught up in this. So let's start with the
- 4:42first of these three episodes, the beginning of the war, and this one
- 4:48is the start of like flashbacks where we get to find out exactly how the
- 4:56relationship with Ace and white Beard shook out. I'm sorry, I'm just seeing
- 5:02so many things in the chat that I missed Demian or was it Demian?
- 5:09Sorry, no, it was, David Higgins challenged Natasha going forward, exercise
- 5:14of your choice when you cry as a result of watching this show. I
- 5:18don't know if there was something that you think I should have cried at in
- 5:21these three episodes, but I definitely didn't. So I'm feeling like, either
- 5:27there's something coming up that you're thinking maybe, but in these three there was
- 5:32nothing that even got me close to that point. David says, there is
- 5:38such a thing as fishmen. How do they feel about the ice? Another
- 5:40good point, you know, and there is a like a correct me if
- 5:46I'm wrong, a world where fishmen live that is like under the ice or
- 5:53under the I'm saying ice because of this underwater right, but we I don't
- 5:59know if it's that. Is that where our friends were headed after getting the
- 6:03ship coated. Was that where they were going was to like see the fishmen.
- 6:09I feel like I remember this. It feels like ages ago. Now,
- 6:14the name of the guy who coated their ships, I can't remember his
- 6:16name either, but uh, Fishman Islands is Florian. I really I don't
- 6:23know if I said this last time, but they just could have done a
- 6:26lot more with that name. I feel like that's just come on, somebody
- 6:30really fell asleep on the job. But yeah, So we pick up where
- 6:36we had left off with all of these ships just appearing up out of the
- 6:41water, having been coated so that they could sneak in and get the drop
- 6:44on them. Lots of slow pans across all of these like bonkers looking new
- 6:49characters that we have ever seen before. And the the thrust of the situation
- 6:59here is that Ace is going to be rescued whether he likes it or not,
- 7:09and he truly he does like it. It's not like he has a
- 7:13death wish or anything. He wants to be rescued, But what he keeps
- 7:17sort of running up against is feeling like it's his own fault that he has
- 7:21gotten in this position in the first place. And we get to see some
- 7:28of the things that led to all of this. So firstly, he evidently
- 7:34like was attempting to prove something going up against white Beard, who was his
- 7:42own father's like rival. I don't remember if he says specifically arch enemy.
- 7:49I feel like that might be too strong for the relationship that these two had,
- 7:57but it is the way that he manages to prove himself enough that white
- 8:11Beard is prepared to just like take him on as a crew member, and
- 8:18Ace himself is just like, get the fuck out of my face. Do
- 8:22you really think I would betray my father that way? Fuck you? And
- 8:30it's really funny, you guys. This was something that made me laugh because,
- 8:33like, I know, I recognize that the show does not know or
- 8:39maybe the way that they have it set up, it is not known ahead
- 8:43of time. But in the Hulu version because reminder, on Netflix, I
- 8:50never got the interstitials that like pop up. I only have gotten those since
- 8:54I started watching on Hulu or on Funnimation. But when when Beard asks Ace
- 9:01to join him and holds his hand out, he Ace says like, basically,
- 9:09shove it up your ass, you old fart, something like that.
- 9:13And he says that, and he's like really fierce, and his voice is
- 9:16very passionate about it, and then all of a sudden it goes and it
- 9:24goes into the interstitial, and it was just such a complete contrast from this
- 9:28like rageful emotional moment to like this silly little thing where we're seeing Nami just
- 9:35sort of look slyly at the camera and like, Nam, he's not even
- 9:37in this, you know it. Just the whole thing felt like Wow,
- 9:41that timing really didn't feel like great guys, but okay, and he has
- 9:52to be convinced over the course of time to give the crew a chance.
- 9:58He meets a bunch of the way white Beard pirates and he just keeps rejecting
- 10:03them and trying to throw himself overboard, and everybody is almost like impressed by
- 10:11this. They're sort of like, well, I mean, he's really fucking
- 10:16going for it, and he keeps trying over and over again, so he
- 10:20must be like determined and a badass, and I have to respect that.
- 10:28But eventually he notices that they're calling white Beard Pops, and one of the
- 10:33guys he like pulls them aside and it says, why do you call them?
- 10:39Why do you call him pops? And this guy's name is Thatch,
- 10:45he's a wild hair and he says, well, it's because he calls a
- 10:52son and it's just a word, but it feels nice, and I just
- 10:58really liked the way that was, you know, just that it feels nice.
- 11:01Like that may seem a little bit weak depending on who you are,
- 11:07but for me, it really worked and just it feels nice to say a
- 11:13thing is just a completely adequate reason to me to continue like doing things in
- 11:22that way. So yeah, it's the the Eventually he winds up like joining
- 11:35in with the crew, and he has like a few different encounters with other
- 11:43pirates that really impress everybody because he is just with his abilities able to take
- 11:50care of things with like very little support needed. And I really love the
- 11:56fact that everybody is so supportive of him getting second in command, and even
- 12:00though it's been open for a long time and there could have been this long
- 12:05standing like expectation that a certain person would get it. And we have this
- 12:11like weird moment with Teach who is standing there like he's sitting at dinner,
- 12:20and Ace is saying, I'm surprised that you're not more upset that I got
- 12:26this job, Like wouldn't you have wanted it? And Teach straight up says,
- 12:33I have no ambition, I don't want it, so like no problem
- 12:37for me at all. Please take the job. It's fine, But you
- 12:43know, it's weird to watch how amicable they are in that scene when you
- 12:52know how like left everything goes and teach. It turns out they find later
- 13:03on a devil fruit and it's that who's like showing it to everybody and saying,
- 13:11we don't know what it does yet. And I don't know if it
- 13:15was like Thatches property explicitly, or if it was part of like the cruise
- 13:22property and Thatch was just guarding it, or what exactly the setup here was.
- 13:28It sort of felt in the way that he was displaying it that it
- 13:31was his personally. And I'm always really I want to see somebody eat a
- 13:41devil fruit for the first time, like actually watch what happens happen, because
- 13:48I don't really understand having a devil fruit and not consuming it as soon as
- 13:56possible, like you know what they it is to have because everybody wants them
- 14:03and how incredibly valuable they are, and it really just feels to me like
- 14:07I I would just go for it, because like there have been only two
- 14:16or three devil fruit powers. If that that, I kind of thought the
- 14:20superpower they got was goofy and not worth it, giraffe man being one of
- 14:26them. I mean there's you know, choppers through if it had gone to
- 14:31anybody but an animal, and the human human fruit would have just done nothing.
- 14:35And now you're not able to swim. I'm trying to think because I
- 14:39know that there was another one that I was sort of like, I don't
- 14:41know, I feel like that one sucks, but I can't recall, so
- 14:43like, I just don't feel like the risk of too big a downside with
- 14:48eating the fruit is high enough to like just sort of hoard it. But
- 14:56I don't know. Oh, David says, isn't that wonderful? Yeah,
- 15:00that's really does give. Like Johnny Bravo vibes with that hair too a little
- 15:03bit and he is super uh that Florian says the bugger man. I think
- 15:13booger mister five was the one who flickes like incendiary boogers that were tiny bombs.
- 15:18See. And the thing is like, I feel like that sucks,
- 15:24yes, but it's not the kind of like disability that I worry is going
- 15:28to ruin your life. I think it's a weird lame power, but it
- 15:35is something that you could live with. And it wouldn't interfere too much with
- 15:39just regular day to day life. So I just feel like, mostly it's
- 15:46a good idea to just handle the fruit right away and deal with it,
- 15:52because like, nothing good comes of just having them. It never works out.
- 15:56And sure enough, we don't actually like see the scene, but we
- 16:02do see Teach looking at the fruit and getting this sort of evil grin on
- 16:06his face, and eventually we see Ace flipping out, and it turns out
- 16:12Teach killed Thatch and stole the fruit and disappeared, and this is a really
- 16:22and it also I won't get into it too much because it's a totally other
- 16:26property and also spoilers, but the scene that follows between Ace and Whitebeard is
- 16:33very reminiscent of mage Erin. Also to me, Ace is disgusted, like,
- 16:41in his opinion, what Teach did was so low and so vile that
- 16:49it is unforgivable, and the idea of letting him get away with it is
- 16:56just unthinkable to him, which frankly, I like I understand and ultimately believe
- 17:07white Beard was in the right when you've got twenty twenty vision, you know,
- 17:14but at the time, just saying to let it go when one of
- 17:18your fellow crewmates has been murdered by one of their own and robbed. I
- 17:26just you know, I couldn't. I couldn't blame Ace for how upset he
- 17:32got. And basically all white Beard can really say to sort of like justify
- 17:40why he's insisting that Ace leave alone, is I have a bad feeling about
- 17:47this one. He doesn't know anything. He's not speaking on like the level
- 17:52of somebody with actual further knowledge. He is has a gut feeling, and
- 18:00that is not good enough for Ace, which I can't blame him for that
- 18:07not being good enough. I mean, just somebody being like, I don't
- 18:11know, I have a bad feeling you should probably just let that guy get
- 18:12away with murder and stolen property. I mean, yeah, it doesn't really
- 18:17sound like anything, does it. You know? So Ace goes against orders.
- 18:25He's explicitely told don't do it, and he do it. He jumps
- 18:30over, he grabs like one of their little, you know, their emergency
- 18:37escape pods. I say this like they're on a spaceship one of those calleds
- 18:41Dinghies lifeboats, I guess. And he takes off for parts unknown to try
- 18:48and track Teach down and as he puts it later. If it hadn't been
- 18:56for him, like deciding to do what the fuck he felt like and directly
- 19:02disobey orders, he would not be sitting here on depth row right now.
- 19:07So I will say that I really like appreciate Ace's commitment to responsibility, because
- 19:17as much as you could just be like, I don't want to die and
- 19:19this is unfair, he doesn't say it's unfair. He's just like, I
- 19:25didn't listen to you, and I just did what the fuck I wanted and
- 19:29now they caught me, and I'm gonna die, and that's my stupid head
- 19:33assphalt. But when you come back into the present, white Beard is having
- 19:44none of it, and straight up is like, what do you mean you
- 19:48went against orders? Is that true? I gave you the order to go
- 19:52and find him? What do you mean? And Ace is like, what
- 19:57the fuck are you doing? Man? What? No, you didn't you
- 20:00told me not to go, And he's like I don't think so, hey,
- 20:06friendoh whose other name? I don't remember? You remember me telling Ace
- 20:10to go find teach right? And the other guy's like, yeah, I
- 20:14was there. I heard the whole thing he said for you to go and
- 20:17track him down and serve justice because nobody fucks with the white Beard Pirates,
- 20:21right, And I just love the fact that Ace is like, I cannot
- 20:26believe that you guys are deciding to like rewrite history so that you can save
- 20:32me. And of course, you know, the because nobody messes with the
- 20:34white Beard Pirates transitions straight into that's why they're not gonna mess with you,
- 20:40man, That's why we're here because we're gonna save you. And it's a
- 20:44really nice like we're just doing what we always do, which is hold shit
- 20:49up on our end. And uh, Ace like the taking responsibility he was
- 21:00willing to be like I just flouted orders. But white Beard is saying to
- 21:07him in response, like, no, it's my responsibility that you've wound up
- 21:12here. And I have to say, there is an interesting argument to be
- 21:19made here, Like he is changing the narrative by saying I sent you,
- 21:25but him was saying like, I am the one who is responsible for you
- 21:27being here. Is a much more truthful sentence in a sense, because you
- 21:33could see it as I refuse to support your desire for justice, which was
- 21:41a fair thing to want, and you felt like you had no choice but
- 21:48to go out and seek justice on your own. And I shouldn't have put
- 21:52you in the position where it felt as if nobody cared what happened to that
- 21:59and that you had to like figure it out all by yourself. And I
- 22:03don't know if that's exactly like what he means, but I feel like that's
- 22:07what he's saying. Essentially, I made a bad call by telling you just
- 22:14to let it go. Like maybe I did have a bad feeling about this
- 22:18one. Maybe I did sense that shit was like gonna be more serious than
- 22:23you were maybe prepared for. But simply telling somebody who's just lost a friend
- 22:30that they're not allowed to pursue the person who took their life isn't really a
- 22:34super compassionate move. And it is no surprise that you wound up acting out
- 22:41the way that you did. And Ace is just so touched like the fact
- 22:49that they have decided they're just gonna play it like this. You can see
- 22:55it's really clear that they are resolved, like there's no changing their minds at
- 23:00this point. This is what's going to happen. And Ace pretty much sort
- 23:04of just like SAgs and it's like, oh my god, Okay, so
- 23:10this is what we're doing huh and you know, guys, like last time,
- 23:15I can't remember if it was Florian. Somebody asked me in the chat,
- 23:19what did I think the deal was going to be with white Beard?
- 23:23Like what kind of person did I expect him to be? And I was
- 23:29like, I'm wondering if maybe everything that like Ace thought about his being on
- 23:34white Beard's crew was true. Like I was wondering if white Beard had ulterior
- 23:41motives for taking Ace on, and the fact that Ace's father was like a
- 23:47secret. I assumed that he just kept that to himself. But we find
- 23:55out that white Beard knew. Ace finally just goes and tells him, and
- 24:00he is feeling a lot of guilt because he's worried that as soon as white
- 24:04Beard here's who he's related to, that he's gonna be like I can't believe
- 24:10I let you on my crew. You're my enemy's son, and I like,
- 24:15get the fuck off my ship and or kill him, you know,
- 24:18like who knows? And instead white Beard's like, oh, that's your dad.
- 24:25Oh if that makes sense actually, but uh yeah, so is there
- 24:29anything else? And He's just like, was there anything else? What do
- 24:33you mean? Like this is kind of a big deal that I just told
- 24:36you, and white Beard's like, is it cause no events? But I
- 24:41am not like really caring about it at all. I have a show that
- 24:48I was in the middle of it. You sort of came into my room
- 24:49like all dramatic and interrupted, and I'm watching my program and if you could
- 24:55just let me get back to that, that'd be great. That's like,
- 24:57really the energy of that is just sort of like, oh, okay,
- 25:02well, thank you for telling me by get lost now. And yeah,
- 25:11the fact that like the all the white Beard pirates have this uh, this
- 25:18connection where they all call and pops because none of them have family anymore,
- 25:25and it's just like this sort of you know, sweet Like I hesitate to
- 25:33be like, oh, we're like a big family, because anybody who has
- 25:36been in the workforce the past ten years knows that in this workplace, where
- 25:41a family is code for everything here is extremely toxic. So I hesitate to
- 25:45say that because I feel like, now it's got an entirely different meaning to
- 25:48it, but I genuinely mean it in its actual literal sense here where everybody
- 25:53does seem to feel we're part of a family, and it has given ace
- 26:02a community which is what makes it so sad in a way that he just
- 26:07decided to bail and go after Teach. Like I understand why, and it's
- 26:17his devotion to his family that has made him go after him in a way.
- 26:22But I think it's a really good sort of metaphor for what can happen
- 26:29when people seek revenge. And you can call it justice, you can call
- 26:33it whatever, but like, really you see the emotion that Ace is working
- 26:37with, and it's revenge she's after, you know, And the metaphor of
- 26:44like this family that I just said I care so much about, I'm going
- 26:48to leave behind and abandoned so I can go after this one person who did
- 26:52a bad thing and thus do like not do what any of them asked me
- 26:57to do or wanted me to do. And I am striking out on my
- 27:03own with no support, just overly fixated on this, like on this achieving
- 27:08this end. I feel like that's a pretty good metaphor for revenge. Actually,
- 27:15just like, oh, like does it require you to give up on
- 27:19things that allegedly matter to you? Does it make you turn your back on
- 27:23the thing that you say you're protecting? Is that really where you want to
- 27:29be? Putting your energy, you know. So yeah, this this backstory
- 27:36I do really enjoy. I also love the fact that, uh that he
- 27:41meets Shanks at one point and in the dub Shanks tells him go ahead and
- 27:47pop a squat and let's have a chat something like that. He's just Papa
- 27:49Squat, and I was just like, oh, man, I do not
- 27:52care for Papa Squat. I have heard that one a lot less in the
- 27:57past few years, and I like it, and I'm sad that it's coming
- 28:00back. So let's see. Trying to make sure that I haven't missed anything
- 28:08like in this episode, I don't. I think that's about everything. I
- 28:17really appreciated the fact that Ace because my guess about what white Beard was going
- 28:26to be like, I was sort of thinking that maybe Ace got got you
- 28:36know, and oh my god, guys, I'm so sorry I got distracted.
- 28:41I gotta pop up where I can turn on captions. I'm not sure
- 28:48if this is like for crowdcasts or what, but I really like the idea
- 28:53that I could enable captions on here, and I'm gonna turn that on and
- 28:59just see if it works, because that's kind of a neat option, you
- 29:03know. But anyway, So my guess about like whether or not he had
- 29:11been tricked sort of depended on Ace having not necessarily even bad judgment, but
- 29:19simply him getting tricked. It feels a little like it would cheapen everything,
- 29:29of course, and it would also make Ace a victim in a way beyond
- 29:37just getting grabbed by the Marines the way he has been to begin with.
- 29:42And I'm really glad that it turns out white Beard seems like such a solid
- 29:49dude. I still have a lot of questions about the series of ivs and
- 29:56hoses that we saw that one time, because that just not come up,
- 30:00And I don't know why not, Why would you bring it up and then
- 30:03just never mention it again. I don't get it. But he is like
- 30:11worthy of Ace, because Ace is a good dude who seems to have a
- 30:15good heart and want to do the right thing most of the time. And
- 30:18it would have been a huge bummer for him to have been almost like preyed
- 30:25upon by somebody who misled him and got his loyalty in a false way.
- 30:32And I'm really glad that we get to see how resistant Ace was to joining
- 30:38up. So he had to like convince Ace and It wasn't even him that
- 30:45convinced him. It was the other members of the crew. Which when your
- 30:49employees are so happy that they convince somebody who's like on probation to join permanently,
- 30:59I feel like that's the best representation you can get. Like your own
- 31:04people are trying to sell it to another person, they must be very happy.
- 31:10So yeah, I was just really pleased to see like the level of
- 31:15the brotherhood between all of them. And also last episode, I had been
- 31:18like guessing about whether or not Lufy would give a shit that he and Ace
- 31:23weren't related, but I started to realize towards the end of the episode,
- 31:29like, wait, he probably must know already that they're not related. I
- 31:32don't know why I didn't realize, And sure enough, he just blurts it
- 31:37out and tells everybody on the pirate ship who aces, which at this point
- 31:42I like, because the secret has been blown over at Navy headquarters anyway,
- 31:49and they would just they're just getting caught up to the rest of the group,
- 31:53you know. So I really like the fact that Lufy just blurts this
- 31:57out and it's like, oh, yeah, that was supposed to be a
- 32:00secret. Oops. So I feel like almost all of that that I just
- 32:07mentioned is pretty much like the first episode. And Whitebeard his power. So
- 32:15he's the one with the tremor tremor fruit, and what he can do is
- 32:22start earthquakes basically, And the way that he handles this here is I'm going
- 32:34to start an earthquake underwater, and I'm going to create a tsunami. And
- 32:42it's sort of like a slow burn. The tsunami strikes like way way later
- 32:50because everybody is thinking, he just did an earthquake, a seaquake. I
- 32:54think what's his name calls it, And it turns out like he had a
- 33:00bigger goal than that, So everybody has to help because once again we're running
- 33:07into the uh too many different characters in this series thing where I cannot keep
- 33:15people's names straight. In response to the start of this uh this tsunami,
- 33:24is it a okejee that freezes the water? I can't remember his name.
- 33:32I feel like that's who it was, but I you, guys, I
- 33:37wish that there was like a some sort of quick access like with faces,
- 33:45just a sort of character map that I could follow, because it's just there
- 33:52are so many people and they have so many different powers and some of their
- 33:55names can sound really similar to other names. And okay, that is the
- 34:02one al Kig, says David. That's how you say alkig. But yeah,
- 34:09so he's the one that freezes everything in place, which it results in
- 34:14this thing. All of the pirates are just like pouring off the ships and
- 34:22onto the ice because they're just like, oh, thank you very much for
- 34:24providing us an extremely easy way to get at you, soldier men. We
- 34:30will be coming to fight you now. And then later on they're like in
- 34:35the middle of this ice flow when it starts to be taken apart basically,
- 34:42and the guys have to be like retreat, retreat because they are going to
- 34:49fall through the ice. And I was just kind of like, yeah,
- 34:52look, if you've got somebody who can create all of this ice out of
- 34:54nowhere, you probably don't want to like not only get smug about oh good,
- 35:01now we have a way to like walk toward you, but also consider
- 35:06the fact that like you're kind of on that person's turf now. And I
- 35:13am just gonna say, like I know that it's not exactly bending what he's
- 35:16doing, like this is a devil fruit power, but if you are up
- 35:22against somebody who's like a water bender. You don't try and fight them in
- 35:27a stream, you know, you don't go ahead and like put yourself in
- 35:31their territory decidedly, and what do you think is going to happen? So
- 35:37the fact that these dudes just like jump off the ship, start to do
- 35:42their thing, and then immediately they are like wait, wait, wait,
- 35:44get back of the ship, I was like, yeah, that feels like
- 35:45you should have figured that out already, you know. So I'm trying to
- 35:52see because, like you guys, there is a lot of action in the
- 35:57third one of these episodes, and the first of the three has most of
- 36:02the flashback stuff, and so even though there's a lot of repetition, it's
- 36:07still like pretty compelling. But the middle one is really like recovering a lot
- 36:15of the same ground as the first episode. So I'm trying to make sure
- 36:20that I'm like covering everything. But as i'm what I do is I have
- 36:22the episode playing on the background and I like just let it play through,
- 36:27or I'll move the cursor around to jump to different scenes. And I kept
- 36:31thinking that I was like in the wrong spot because I keep seeing duplicate scenes
- 36:38from the first of the three episodes, and it's like, no, they
- 36:43just replayed that entire scene in episode two. So all of this is,
- 36:54let's see, what's the name of the guy with the yellow hair that like
- 36:59sticks out in every direction who now seems to be white Beard's right hand Marco?
- 37:06Is that him? I'm trying to see, like if they say their
- 37:12names here, but Marco says Florine, Okay, cool. Yeah. The
- 37:17second has a lot of repeats. Yeah. I'm looking through it and I'm
- 37:21just kind of like, when does that? Because you know, the the
- 37:24fighting, and I hesitate to even call it that because it's just like turning
- 37:30whole swaths of ocean into ice or tsunamis. That doesn't feel like it deserves
- 37:35the name of fight. That doesn't feel like an accurate, adequate description of
- 37:42what's happening here. But I this, uh like the way that this episode
- 37:52goes is basically just a starting to be like they like me, they really
- 37:57like me, and they're gonna have my back. Before we cut over to
- 38:00Loofy, who all of a sudden their ship starts being pulled backward and nobody
- 38:07can figure out why it's happening. I have to assume that it has something
- 38:14to do with baby Oars, I feel like, is what Ace calls him.
- 38:22But at this point we don't know about him. So everybody is just
- 38:25like, oh my god, what is going on, Like there's no reason
- 38:30for the ocean to act like this, and they are at like the crew
- 38:36members are asking Buggy like, but you said it was faded that you were
- 38:40going to be King of the Pirates, So if you can't figure out how
- 38:44to fix this, then how can that be true? And I really love
- 38:49the nature of this. It got me like thinking about how like cults of
- 38:54personality work and the fact that you have got guys there that are arguing like,
- 39:06well, I guess he's just giving up because Buggy doesn't have an answer
- 39:09for them. So he says something like I guess I just have to wait
- 39:15for a miracle. Eventually one will happen, and some of those guys take
- 39:19it as a admission of just I guess I maybe was wrong or lack of
- 39:30faith. I think saying I'm sure a miracle will happen is actually a demonstration
- 39:37of faith, and that is what one of the other guys chimes in with.
- 39:40It's like, you guys think he's giving up, that's just confidence.
- 39:44He knows that something is going to go right that you know, and I
- 39:50love Off to the side, mister three is just kind of watching all of
- 39:53this like you guys know, like when the guy said it's confidence and he's
- 40:00like, no, it's not. And eventually that dude has convinced everybody else
- 40:06and so they just start cheering buggy On wildly, and dudes like this is
- 40:10really I hate watching this. Oh my god, what the fuck? And
- 40:15yeah, this is something that is so weird and really, like I think
- 40:22any of us potentially could fall for this, the idea of like, I
- 40:30am going to give the person that I really like and admire every benefit of
- 40:37the doubt and create whole narratives that excuse whatever it is that they're doing or
- 40:44whatever fuck up they just made in like not just a well you know everybody
- 40:50makes mistakes. No, no, no, it's never just like, oh,
- 40:53sometimes people fuck up. It's always this is part of a bigger game.
- 41:00The one that Rashon cites all the time that makes her crazy is he's
- 41:07playing chess. You're playing checkers. And that is like, for me,
- 41:12the giveaway if somebody says that he's playing chess and you're playing checkers. They
- 41:17are trying to spin a narrative where what exactly it looks like is happening isn't
- 41:24happening because that's too easy and obvious, and you are so dumb that you
- 41:30felt for it. And this is like the discourse where she and I really
- 41:37got into it talking about the meaning behind people saying this was right around when
- 41:43fucking Kanye Wests like was clearly going through a manic episode and just starting to
- 41:51low key like stock him and say shit that was like wildly anti semitic and
- 41:59really like conspiracy theory stuff. And there were so many people out there who
- 42:05just didn't want for Kanye to be having a very simple, like mental illness
- 42:13episode that a lot of other people also deal with and can recognize. They
- 42:16didn't want him to suffer from this, so they turned it into like there
- 42:23are hidden messages here, or he is uh, or he's just like right,
- 42:30or he's got inside information because of how like high up the social food
- 42:35chain he is that he knows people and knows things we don't know. Like
- 42:39the whole way that went was everybody who like knows what these sorts of episodes
- 42:47looks like going, guys, come on, clearly, it's fucking textbook.
- 42:52And then his like die hard fans coming up with these elaborate explanations that are
- 43:00pulled completely out of their ass, and you know the same thing with like
- 43:05an Andrew Tate. Andrew Tate got caught trafficking women. It's a very like
- 43:14clear right, but he did this thing where he has this like weird little
- 43:22army of creepy misogynists who are just like, oh, he's exactly where he
- 43:28wants to be. He wasn't tracking or trafficking women. He got set up,
- 43:34like you know, just all of these scenarios that they have invented,
- 43:40completely invented in order to make somebody look like it's all part of their big
- 43:45plan. And it's because they want to believe that somebody has shit under control.
- 43:52They want to believe that there is a person who is an authority figure
- 43:58they can turn to. And it's understandable. I think a lot of us
- 44:04take comfort in the like the sort of notion that there is a person in
- 44:09charge who knows what's going on and what to do in any given scenario.
- 44:15But we just will fall into this trap where we forget everybody's a person,
- 44:22and we want somebody to be a thing for us. It's not about that
- 44:28person anymore. It becomes them being a symbol. And so you reach this
- 44:34point where either you have to like come to terms with the fact that they
- 44:37are not a symbol, they are a full person and you have got to
- 44:43find what you're seeking from them elsewhere, or you have to disconnect from them
- 44:49as a person and hold yourself back. And this is actually what I think
- 44:52Beyonce has done, like amazingly well in terms of her branding, is that
- 44:58she has figured out how to hold herself apart in terms of her exposure in
- 45:04the media, so that she isn't all over social media. She does she
- 45:08like posts on Instagram pretty consistently, but she doesn't come out here tweeting her
- 45:15like fucking cold takes. She drops info when she's about to go on tour
- 45:23or release an album, and then she shows up to the gala looking unbelievable,
- 45:30and she performs an amazing show, and then she goes into hibernation mode
- 45:36and nobody can find her and nobody knows what she's doing or where she is.
- 45:40And honestly, that is the kind of behavior that's like hyper curated that
- 45:47I feel like she is making herself into a symbol and she knows that's what
- 45:52she's doing, and she's being very careful about it because she doesn't want to
- 45:54be messy. She doesn't want her whole like ass hanging out on the internet
- 45:59while everybody watches her have like a nervous breakdown. You know, she's just
- 46:04really really private. But it also dovetails well with the brand she's set up
- 46:08for herself. So what I'm saying in all of this is that Buggies people
- 46:14are in a cult of personality. It's really fascinating to watch from the sidelines
- 46:17as he like very openly in my opinion, and Mitzi doesn't know what the
- 46:23fuck is going on, and the guys keep trying to act like him,
- 46:28admitting that is somehow proof that he's like a better, more capable person than
- 46:37all of them. They bend themselves over backwards to make excuses, and it
- 46:45ultimately does seem to work out because he is just here like on this ship,
- 46:52like laying down staring up at the clouds, going, I mean,
- 46:54I guess there has to be another miracle at some point, Like I can't
- 46:58do anything so I'm just gonna wait it out. And then you see this
- 47:02like huge uh shape shadow I guess, cross over him, and this is
- 47:13when you see baby Ores come out. Now I'm getting all of this like
- 47:16frustrating interference on Hulu trying to like jump around because the uh all Consuming Inferno
- 47:27I'm trying to like jump to that episode, and I cannot get Hulu to
- 47:31work. What is the name of the person who does the all Consuming Inferno?
- 47:37And this guy is the one that I think, uh, Florian you
- 47:40told me is based on like a martial arts star or something like his appearances.
- 47:47So yeah, this uh, this dude like there's a fight between him,
- 47:53and this is sort of oh my god, you guys, I just
- 47:58noticed the fucking uh Because we have Toby and Helmepa off to the side at
- 48:07one point and they're kind of having like a freak out about whether they're going
- 48:10to be able to do anything because the scale of the fight here and what
- 48:15everybody is capable of is just completely dwarfs anything that they are able to do,
- 48:21so they're debating whether they even want to get involved. And I had
- 48:25not noticed that guy with the heart shaped shades is here, and I can't
- 48:32remember his name, y'all, but I really enjoy this dude, and I
- 48:36wish that he would show up more because he is a good time Florian,
- 48:42says a Kainu. Okay, right, so his name is in the title.
- 48:49Bucky is a demagogue. I hadn't thought of this. This is the
- 48:52gap between him and Loofy. Bucky secretly has the luck Luck fruit, not
- 48:57the chop chop fruit. I like that idea, the luck look fruit.
- 49:04You guys. I know that I've asked this before, and once again,
- 49:08I know that it's probably loaded with spoilers and you can't do it. But
- 49:12if anybody has like a spreadsheet of all of the different devil fruits that have
- 49:15been we have come across so far, the characters who have had them,
- 49:21what the fruit is called, and what it does, I really just want
- 49:24to peruse it. I want to see broken down in those basic terms,
- 49:30what we're working with here, because it's just there are so many and the
- 49:35names and everything are always so weird. So see, I'm trying to see
- 49:45if there's anything that I missed in this one. Nope, that's about it.
- 49:51So I feel like the name of the ship being Moby dick, I
- 49:55feel like should mean more than I'm getting. I don't know if that's significant
- 50:00at all, because it's it's modeled to look like a whale. It's got
- 50:04like that front hull has the uh sort of striping on it that the bottom
- 50:09jaw of a whale has. So let's see. Oh that's right. So
- 50:17these dudes that go up against each other, we've got, uh the guy
- 50:23who's like a strong man, and he manages to like cut a huge piece
- 50:30of the ice out and lift it and like chuck it at the Marines.
- 50:36And I don't know, I don't remember, guys, is this somebody who
- 50:38is part of the Whitebeard pirates or is this guy like an independent contractor somebody
- 50:45like separate from them? And he throws it, but then it gets I
- 50:52think it's a Kaynu who intercepts it and keeps it from crushing All of the
- 50:58poor Marines who buy the way are yelling about how it's going to crush them
- 51:02while standing completely still. I will never be like, I will never not
- 51:07be entertained by that when people are like, oh my god, it's coming
- 51:12for us, and they stand stock still and just let it happen. But
- 51:19we also get a little check in with a smoker, and what's the name
- 51:24of the girl who's the really good sword fighter? You guys, I really
- 51:31expected there to be more to her, that we were gonna like encounter her
- 51:37again, there would be a whole thing. It is wild to me that
- 51:43we met her so long ago and pretty much nothing ever happened with that.
- 51:49You know, she runs into Zorro, who thinks that she looks exactly like
- 51:52the girl who died that he used to train with, and I just felt
- 51:55like we were getting something significant set up and then nothing. And I don't
- 52:02know, like maybe she's meant to be like that girl's sister and that's why
- 52:06they look so alike, or maybe it's that she faked her own death and
- 52:10that is the girl, but she had an injury that caused her to have
- 52:15to wear glasses and so now she just like doesn't have great eyesight anymore or
- 52:20whatever. I don't know, But when she showed up here, I was
- 52:23almost like, don't do that. Don't show me this girl that I was
- 52:27like kind of hype about and you did nothing with because it just feels like
- 52:30a tease. Joe Zu he belongs to white Beard. He ate the diamond
- 52:38diamond fruit. Oh that's right, Yes, I forgot about that, okay,
- 52:45and he looked crazy. That was the other thing actually about these three
- 52:50episodes was I felt like, overall the animation was really poor in comparison to
- 52:57what I've sort of gotten used to. We had way more still frames with
- 53:02the camera moving than usual. It was a lot less of our actual characters
- 53:08moving than I was used to. David says really good sword fighter in quotes
- 53:14with a laugh face. Why are you laughing? Wasn't she just a really
- 53:17good sword fighter? What do you mean? Why? What should I have
- 53:22said? I don't I don't know what I did wrong? Help? But
- 53:27anyway, So yeah, there's like, basically the whole gang is here,
- 53:30so almost everybody that we've ever seen in our lives is mixed into this whole
- 53:37conflict here. But what I really was sort of like getting to was the
- 53:44fact that there are so many different, like new people here on top of
- 53:51all of these older characters that we haven't seen in a while. I don't
- 53:57know, like how I am going to keep these people straight. I genuinely
- 54:04feel like it's going to be frustrating for people to listen to if they know
- 54:08the characters really well, they will be able to tell by the description I
- 54:13give of what they look like. But if they don't, I am worried
- 54:17that it's going to be impossible for people to follow because I'm just like,
- 54:22you know, the guy with the hat talk to the other guy who has
- 54:25that weird beard, and I really wish that I could get everybody's names,
- 54:30But it feels like just as soon as I start to remember, we switch
- 54:36settings and there's a whole new cast that I've got to get used to,
- 54:38we don't see the cast that I started to get a hold of for like
- 54:43a year, and then they pop back up again and I'm expected to just
- 54:45pick it up again, and I can't do it. It's just I feel
- 54:50like I need something to help me, some sort of cheat sheet. I
- 54:54don't know what, but anyway, so that like that fight and then the
- 55:04uh, what is it that? The the inferno power that he has?
- 55:10I'm trying to find this do what is it? Says Gura? The gura
- 55:20gura no means ability. Remind me, kids, what's that? The gura
- 55:25gura no means am I in the wrong? No, that's the right section.
- 55:30Oh, there's a bunch of chats all right, guys. Uh.
- 55:34David says, low quality animation means high quality is coming. That does tend
- 55:38to be the rule, and I'm trying to keep that in mind. But
- 55:43it is really like the combination of there being people with fantastic power, the
- 55:50likes of which we've never seen, but then kind of lackluster animation means that
- 55:55I wish it hit a little harder than it does. You know. Florian
- 56:01says she is, but mostly she gets compared to Zorro and there she ain't
- 56:06that good, but Zorro is just on a different level. Yeah, and
- 56:08like she's good against like the soldiers and stuff that try to put her down
- 56:14in the street. I feel like she took care of a bunch of guys.
- 56:19Zoro fangirl who is in denial of being a fangirl is she? I
- 56:23don't remember that, but I believe you. Marco he ate the Phoenix Phoenix
- 56:30fruit a mystical zoan type right right right right, and his like basically he
- 56:37can just heal. Here goes a power that feels really opie, where it's
- 56:45just you can do damage to me and I'll take that damage, but it
- 56:50won't matter damn like that feels ideal, you know, and the whole this
- 57:05scene of like jumping from one person to another and seeing all of them reacting.
- 57:09There is something really funny about Kobe and how MEPO being included in that
- 57:16group, because we keep seeing dudes who are like incredibly powerful and are just
- 57:24you know, they are impressed, and so we know, if this dude
- 57:29who is capable of such dramatic shit is impressed, then that means this is
- 57:35a big deal. But when it's just how MEPO and Kobe being impressed,
- 57:40I mean, they're just like infants, you know. I'm I don't feel
- 57:47like I care about their opinion in this moment. It's just not super relevant
- 57:52to me, you know what I'm saying. So anyway, I'm kind of
- 58:01coming to the end of my time here. But the all Consuming Inferno ends
- 58:08with the appearance of this giant who is so like he can walk on the
- 58:15ocean floor and it comes up to like not even hip level. It's he
- 58:22is insanely big, and I was looking at him and I was thinking,
- 58:27like, what have we seen a creature this size before? And then Ace
- 58:31calls him like baby oars and I was like, oh, Oars, right,
- 58:36but I feel like I did. I keep sort of mistakenly thinking that
- 58:42Oars was created from parts by Maria, and he wasn't. He was just
- 58:47like a really lucky find as a corpse, but he was, you know,
- 58:53a living thing all on his own at one point. So now we've
- 58:59got this new baby Oars who shows up and he has these long eyelashes and
- 59:06he yells at everybody because I think that, like the Marines might have mistakenly
- 59:13thought this dude was coming to help them out. I'm not really sure what
- 59:19they expected, but to me, the expressions they had on their faces when
- 59:23they saw him, it didn't feel like they were afraid enough. And I
- 59:28was sort of like, is this there, dude? But then Baby Oars
- 59:34basically yells, that's my friend Ace, and you're not gonna screw with him,
- 59:38leave him alone, and that's how the episode ends, and you know
- 59:43all, I really really cannot wait to see more of this guy, because
- 59:47I enjoyed Oars a lot as a character, even though he was technically loofy.
- 59:53And this giant monster who dwarfs likeultiple ships can sail around him and they
- 1:00:01won't compare in size not even in the slightest I can't wait to see what
- 1:00:07happens with this guy and what his like. There has to be something that
- 1:00:13he can do beyond just be gigantic. Maybe not. I mean, I
- 1:00:17guess that's enough of an advantage, but anyway, I'm just wondering if he
- 1:00:22has any other tricks up his sleeve as well. So I'm gonna wrap this
- 1:00:28one up. But I feel like, you know, guys, I get
- 1:00:31this sometimes where there is a sensation that I have left something out, and
- 1:00:37because I'm having so much trouble bouncing around within the episode on Hulu, it's
- 1:00:42hard for me to like double check anything. Is anybody in the chat?
- 1:00:45Feeling like I wanted her to talk about X y Z and she hasn't even
- 1:00:49mentioned it. Because I'm sorry, these are kind of frantic episodes. It's
- 1:00:52sort of the fact that all the whole gang is here means that everybody gets
- 1:01:00jumped to with the camera multiple times, which means that there isn't the same
- 1:01:06sense of like narrative cohesion because you have to like leap around to all of
- 1:01:14these various parties that are involved. But there aren't just two sides to this.
- 1:01:21There are multiple sides. Really it could you could be you could break
- 1:01:24it down to two sides, the Marines and then the white Beard people.
- 1:01:29But it's a lot more than that in terms of like the factors. So
- 1:01:34it can get a little like difficult to talk about because things don't follow the
- 1:01:40narrative structure that I'm used to with the way these guys fight. David says
- 1:01:47white Beard being a gas lighter, I mean, I did. I talked
- 1:01:51about that, right, and the fact that he is just like, now
- 1:01:53I'm taking responsibility for which I'm I'm here for. Florian says, maybe what
- 1:01:59you think about the lava flout the lava power, it's really cool looking.
- 1:02:07I love the fact that at one point white Beard looks up and is like,
- 1:02:09that's really bright. Can you tone it down? I think he might
- 1:02:12have been saying that to Marco though actually the Phoenix. But I I will
- 1:02:20be honest with you, guys, I get a little bit bored of like
- 1:02:24fire related powers. There's just something about them that I'm I'm like, I
- 1:02:31don't know, we've done this yan, you know what I mean. So
- 1:02:35it's like I can understand that this is super impressive and something to be afraid
- 1:02:40of but it's not as fun and creative as some of the other powers,
- 1:02:46So it just, you know, I kind of especially considering this dude is
- 1:02:52like so distinctive looking, I kind of wanted his power to be something equally
- 1:02:57as distinctive, and I don't know what it would have been. But uh,
- 1:03:01Florian says, I feel you feel the same about swords, which I
- 1:03:05said before, Yeah I remember you, and yeah, yeah exactly. David
- 1:03:09says, they never really do damage, and that's that's the tough thing just
- 1:03:14in general about the show is that a lot of people don't really do damage,
- 1:03:16you know, like we're told that they do, but then people just
- 1:03:20get up and walk away, so it's hard to take it seriously. But
- 1:03:24yeah, especially what I want actually is a check in with our friend Crocodile
- 1:03:30as well too. We haven't seen him too much. We've been mostly when
- 1:03:35we're on the ship with Loofy. It's JIMBEI, Loofy, and Buggy that
- 1:03:38we see and kind of wondering what Crocodile is thinking about all of this.
- 1:03:45But anyway, okay, I gotta wrap up. Thank you guys again for
- 1:03:49hanging out with me. I really appreciate you. And your patients until next
- 1:03:52time to Loo motherfuckers. That was an unspoiled network pat
