- 0:00[SPEAKER_00]: Hey guys, been a while, guy here.
- 0:01[SPEAKER_00]: That's been that long, but you know, in podcast time, it's been a while.
- 0:05[SPEAKER_00]: Hope you're good.
- 0:06[SPEAKER_00]: Hope you had a great holiday or ongoing holiday, summer, baby.
- 0:10[SPEAKER_00]: That's why I pull out my golf clubs two or three times, fired up about it.
- 0:16[SPEAKER_00]: I retired on the seventeenth hole at Carrista Park the other day, and then I dreamed about golf last night, so I guess I'm unretired.
- 0:23[SPEAKER_00]: Brent Jones is coming up on the show.
- 0:26[SPEAKER_00]: Really enjoyed this conversation.
- 0:28[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, one of the get Brent on for a while.
- 0:31[SPEAKER_00]: Very insightful.
- 0:32[SPEAKER_00]: He checks a lot of box raise a former great, but he's still very engaged.
- 0:36[SPEAKER_00]: Watch as the team very closely watches the NFL closely lives in Dallas now.
- 0:39[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, but he's dialed in on the Niners.
- 0:42[SPEAKER_00]: He is going into the forty Niners Hall of Fame.
- 0:45[SPEAKER_00]: It's the Eddie DeBardolo Hall of Fame, but he's going to be inducted during the season.
- 0:50[SPEAKER_00]: I'll have a ceremony, a statue.
- 0:53[SPEAKER_00]: He talks about that in this conversation.
- 0:55[SPEAKER_00]: He talks about Brock Perti and Ricky Pearsol and Joe Montana and George Kittle and why he thinks the Niners Championship window is open.
- 1:05[SPEAKER_00]: Really enjoyed it.
- 1:06[SPEAKER_00]: Really fun guy, really engaging guy.
- 1:09[SPEAKER_00]: And I'd never met him before, talked to him before.
- 1:13[SPEAKER_00]: He agreed to do the interview blind so to speak and hopefully at a good time.
- 1:17[SPEAKER_00]: I think he did.
- 1:18[SPEAKER_00]: Um, and I hope you enjoy it.
- 1:20[SPEAKER_00]: So it'll be good.
- 1:21[SPEAKER_00]: By the way, I watched the other day on my DVR.
- 1:26[SPEAKER_00]: I guess I'd recorded somewhere along the way, the Savannah bananas.
- 1:29[SPEAKER_00]: I know they re aired their sixty minutes interview.
- 1:34[SPEAKER_00]: on Sunday with the guy that found it this event of it.
- 1:36[SPEAKER_00]: I was going to talk about other but I watched the Savannah bananas play at Fenway Park.
- 1:42[SPEAKER_00]: They've been on TV before but the fact that this one was at Fenway made it feel big and
- 1:49[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not just pretending to be a part of the culture when I tell you, I was way more entertained than I thought I would be.
- 1:56[SPEAKER_00]: Now, I realize there are selling out college football stadiums and major league baseball stadiums.
- 2:02[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm not exactly on the front edge of this.
- 2:05[SPEAKER_00]: This isn't, bye, bye, bye.
- 2:08[SPEAKER_00]: Get ahead of it.
- 2:09[SPEAKER_00]: Everyone has bought, bought, bought on this event of bananas.
- 2:12[SPEAKER_00]: But
- 2:13[SPEAKER_00]: what surprised me was a few things.
- 2:16[SPEAKER_00]: One, the speed that they play the game at, like, you know, baseball now was implemented the pitch clock.
- 2:21[SPEAKER_00]: These guys go way faster than the pitch clock.
- 2:24[SPEAKER_00]: There's a game clock.
- 2:26[SPEAKER_00]: The actual rule.
- 2:27[SPEAKER_00]: I don't, I didn't watch long enough.
- 2:29[SPEAKER_00]: I think I understand it, but I might not be a hundred percent right, but the way it appears is they score each inning as one, meaning if you win the first inning three to one, you're not up
- 2:42[SPEAKER_00]: three to one for the game, you're up one to nothing.
- 2:44[SPEAKER_00]: And then the other team wins the second inning, one to nothing.
- 2:47[SPEAKER_00]: They're not down three to two is now tied at one to one.
- 2:50[SPEAKER_00]: So I thought that was interesting.
- 2:53[SPEAKER_00]: And then my tolerance for the high entertainment level of like the player intros.
- 3:00[SPEAKER_00]: It was high.
- 3:01[SPEAKER_00]: I turned out it wasn't as high as I thought it was much higher than I thought it would be like if you described me All the dancing and the music in between action I would have said that doesn't sound like something I want to watch but then I watched it Not really knowing exactly what was coming and I was I thought it was awesome several times my wife from the other room was like what are you cackling at?
- 3:25[SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, this is hilarious.
- 3:28[SPEAKER_00]: And then the third part, this interesting is like,
- 3:31[SPEAKER_00]: Some of them are good, like they're good baseball players.
- 3:33[SPEAKER_00]: They're minor leagueers.
- 3:34[SPEAKER_00]: One guy just finished his first year at Auburn who is about to go to Auburn from junior college.
- 3:40[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, as a sports fan, you do what, we all do what you're on the couch, like, or, you know, do what you're watching movies too.
- 3:47[SPEAKER_00]: Old movies, like, who is that?
- 3:48[SPEAKER_00]: And you go to wiki.
- 3:49[SPEAKER_00]: So, I was doing that a lot watching the Savannah Pitans, like, I think this guy's kind of good.
- 3:53[SPEAKER_00]: Who is he?
- 3:53[SPEAKER_00]: You know, and then you look him up.
- 3:56[SPEAKER_00]: So, I thought it was great.
- 3:58[SPEAKER_00]: That's it.
- 3:59[SPEAKER_00]: That's the take.
- 4:01[SPEAKER_00]: I'm probably, I don't know.
- 4:03[SPEAKER_00]: I got a check.
- 4:04[SPEAKER_00]: I got a text from my mom on Sunday.
- 4:06[SPEAKER_00]: They said, let me know when this event of bananas are coming to town.
- 4:09[SPEAKER_00]: I was like, you let me know.
- 4:11[SPEAKER_00]: I don't have that calendar, but I'm going to look it up now because it was, it was great.
- 4:16[SPEAKER_00]: Really enjoyed it.
- 4:17[SPEAKER_00]: Of course, as always, if you want to watch this interview, let's come up with Brent Jones.
- 4:22[SPEAKER_00]: You can do that on the YouTube channel.
- 4:25[SPEAKER_00]: You just go to youtube.com slash at Guy Haberman.
- 4:30[SPEAKER_00]: I'm feeling pretty in the zone right now on football because here the beginning of the first full week of July, I've been booking a lot of flights for my college football schedule.
- 4:43[SPEAKER_00]: the first three weeks of the scheduler sets on book and flights and you know you start booking flights and I'm booking flights to Vegas for big ten media day and a couple other trips for college football meetings and another seminar a couple seminars I'm going to and it's just like I was watching what was on maybe ACC network the night it was like Georgia
- 5:10[SPEAKER_00]: Florida watching the game college football from last year and my wife was like I I don't think I'm ready for football season yet and it hit me you know it
- 5:20[SPEAKER_00]: I think I am.
- 5:21[SPEAKER_00]: I know a lot of people, maybe everyone's not in that boat, but it's not here yet, so if you're not in that boat, that's fine.
- 5:28[SPEAKER_00]: But I've been watching, you know, watching some tape, and I'm getting ready for it.
- 5:33[SPEAKER_00]: So anyway, that's that.
- 5:34[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, let's get to Brent Jones.
- 5:39[SPEAKER_00]: Here we go.
- 5:39[SPEAKER_00]: With the three-time Super Bowl Champion, College Football Hall of Famer, he played in seven NFC Championship games,
- 5:50[SPEAKER_00]: Many of you know his story.
- 5:51[SPEAKER_00]: I knew his story, but there was even a part of it that I didn't quite know.
- 5:55[SPEAKER_00]: That well, which I asked him about, he was in a devastating car accident.
- 6:00[SPEAKER_00]: Going into his rookie year, thank God, you know, he and his then fiancee, she'll hear him describe were okay in the end.
- 6:07[SPEAKER_00]: They survived and recovered, but gave him interesting perspective on Ricky Pierce also.
- 6:13[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think he's talked about that as it relates to Ricky before, so there's one thing that I thought was new and interesting.
- 6:19[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, here we go.
- 6:19[SPEAKER_00]: No more, no more, he, he and Ha Ha, let's get to Brent Jones.
- 6:25[SPEAKER_00]: The Niners put out the press release when they announced in May that you were going to be in the forty Niners Hall of Fame, thirty-third member.
- 6:32[SPEAKER_00]: What was, was that something that was even on your mind, were you thinking about it, had it occurred to you, were you waiting for it?
- 6:39[SPEAKER_01]: You know, it's not like a lot about it in the past, but it really wasn't on my mind at the time.
- 6:45[SPEAKER_01]: I hadn't, you know, hadn't switched over to football mode and I had a,
- 6:51[SPEAKER_01]: call my phone.
- 6:52[SPEAKER_01]: And years ago, I had talked to Jed York.
- 6:55[SPEAKER_01]: And so, I mean, I hadn't talked to Jed lately.
- 6:59[SPEAKER_01]: And I saw it was from Jed and I thought, oh, I, you know, they probably have some event or something that they, he's calling about.
- 7:07[SPEAKER_01]: When I answered the phone, he said, can I speak to the next member of the forty-nine years Hall of Fame?
- 7:11[SPEAKER_01]: It was so cool.
- 7:12[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I couldn't believe it.
- 7:15[SPEAKER_01]: Wow.
- 7:16[SPEAKER_01]: It was super.
- 7:17[SPEAKER_01]: Impressive and Jed was fantastic and gracious and it was, it was really exciting.
- 7:24[SPEAKER_00]: Do you have you felt, you know, there's always, I love talking to athletes who've competed the highest level.
- 7:32[SPEAKER_00]: There always seems to be not always, but often this mix of
- 7:38[SPEAKER_00]: like humility, but also probably this internal monologue while you were a player that was, you know, you're probably saying the most bad-ass stuff in the world to yourself about like who you are, right?
- 7:51[SPEAKER_00]: And like who can't take you down and all of that?
- 7:55[SPEAKER_00]: How did you, you know, every every interview, every story about Brent Jones is like this guy's just the humility, right?
- 8:03[SPEAKER_00]: All of that, but also to compete at this level requires
- 8:08[SPEAKER_00]: a certain level of, you know, that bulletproof confidence, that that would be if you probably shared your thoughts with people outside of your lack or when people would think, this is the most arrogant guy in the world.
- 8:21[SPEAKER_00]: So what was that, what does that mix like in your head?
- 8:24[SPEAKER_01]: You know, you're the first person that has ever asked me that question.
- 8:28[SPEAKER_01]: And I hadn't thought about it a lot, but it was really true.
- 8:32[SPEAKER_01]: And I think you have to have
- 8:35[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe two personas kind of a game locked in persona where you're the badass and nobody can take you and you don't care and how I'm going to go across the middle and if some guy tries to knock me out, I'm getting up, you can't hurt me.
- 8:51[SPEAKER_01]: It's weird.
- 8:52[SPEAKER_01]: It's a little bit of a mindset.
- 8:53[SPEAKER_01]: It's a little bit of kind of dropping into the zone on game day and having no fears really weird.
- 9:01[SPEAKER_01]: And then outside of of game day, you know, there's times where you have to toughen up and be mentally tough at practice, training camp, you know, back in the old days when we go to training camp for four or five weeks and be in pads and kill each other in the hundred and ten degree weather, you had to be mentally tough.
- 9:20[SPEAKER_01]: But I think it kind of comes around to that point about getting yourself ready to go, being mentally engaged.
- 9:29[SPEAKER_01]: And then it's weird kind of when you come out of it.
- 9:32[SPEAKER_01]: So typically on Sundays, I wouldn't be able to sleep very good.
- 9:37[SPEAKER_01]: I'd just be wired.
- 9:39[SPEAKER_01]: And no matter how tired you were, no matter how beat up, great game, frustrating game,
- 9:47[SPEAKER_01]: I could hardly sleep.
- 9:48[SPEAKER_01]: And so Monday morning where I'd be kind of wiped out, and we go in for film and practice and treatment and what have you.
- 9:56[SPEAKER_01]: And you'd kind of slowly come down off of that bad ass.
- 10:01[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I'm tougher than anybody.
- 10:03[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not afraid of anybody attitude.
- 10:07[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that that got me through it, but I don't think it.
- 10:14[SPEAKER_01]: was by natural disposition, I guess, probably the best way to say it.
- 10:18[SPEAKER_00]: Interesting.
- 10:19[SPEAKER_00]: But it had to be naturally in there somewhere for you to rise the way you did, compete overcome all of that stuff.
- 10:27[SPEAKER_01]: It was there and I think, gosh, you know, it wasn't always there because you didn't have the comments because I was late.
- 10:35[SPEAKER_01]: football player.
- 10:36[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't I was second string in high school, frustratingly, I thought I could be starting and then still got a chance to play at Santa Clara.
- 10:42[SPEAKER_01]: They moved me from wide receiver to tight end and started gaining weight focusing on my speed and doing that.
- 10:49[SPEAKER_01]: And then all of a sudden.
- 10:52[SPEAKER_01]: I remember.
- 10:53[SPEAKER_01]: really my first experience at a higher level was I got to play in the East West Shrine game so go out to those practices and you know their coaches, scouts and all that and and you kind of start to develop this confidence like hey I can play with these guys hey I can do this.
- 11:09[SPEAKER_01]: I went to the combine when nobody knew what the heck the combine was.
- 11:13[SPEAKER_01]: You didn't even know what their drills were.
- 11:16[SPEAKER_01]: And I remember guys kind of teasing me, making fun of me going Santa Clara, is that like a high school?
- 11:21[SPEAKER_01]: And you know, everybody from Alabama and Oklahoma and Texas and USC.
- 11:26[SPEAKER_01]: And so I remember kind of having a little bit of a chip on my shoulder.
- 11:32[SPEAKER_01]: just coming from a smaller school and a program where people think, oh, this guy's got no chance.
- 11:38[SPEAKER_01]: And so that kind of started making me mentally tough, I believe, and then I kind of had
- 11:48[SPEAKER_01]: Unsung chip on your shoulder attitude, I think, throughout my whole career, I kind of stuck with that.
- 11:54[SPEAKER_01]: And that's kind of, I guess how I developed that side of my mental preparation.
- 12:01[SPEAKER_01]: And so it just kind of hung with me thinking back all these years, but it's a good question, because I hadn't thought about it a lot, but at the time, I'd laugh.
- 12:12[SPEAKER_01]: And then, you know, every once in a while,
- 12:15[SPEAKER_01]: Your your game day attitude would would show up during the week.
- 12:21[SPEAKER_01]: You know, can't bark at my wife or, you know, somebody cut you off on the freeway and you're ready to take them on.
- 12:29[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, okay, come down.
- 12:30[SPEAKER_01]: Big boy.
- 12:32[SPEAKER_00]: I remember, and I know, you know, there's a lot has happened since this, but a couple years ago, Brandon Iyuk blocked the, I think it was Rokuan Smith, one of the Ravens linebackers like Pancake to him and you know, and everybody saw it.
- 12:48[SPEAKER_00]: And I showed it to, I interviewed, Iyuk in the locker room like the next week.
- 12:54[SPEAKER_00]: And it was like Wednesday or something.
- 12:57[SPEAKER_00]: And he said his process was he, he's like, I got to watch film that I and find out who I hate this week.
- 13:03[SPEAKER_00]: And I thought that was such an interesting, you know, window into like probably the way a lot of guys think, right?
- 13:10[SPEAKER_00]: Like, who do I hate this week?
- 13:11[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, especially if you're a blocker, basically the enemy for that week.
- 13:19[SPEAKER_01]: It's weird, you know, it's fun to watch games nowadays and it's not quite the same, but there's so much camaraderie after the game and high five in and switching jerseys and signing autographs and it's like, we did not do that.
- 13:33[SPEAKER_01]: You had a brief interlude to shake a guy's hand and get going, but I don't know that that would have been the case in our day because there were, there were coaches, there were teams where you
- 13:45[SPEAKER_01]: really, we're not supposed to like each other and not have anything to really do with each other at all, other than showing a little bit of sportsmanship after the game.
- 13:54[SPEAKER_00]: Isn't it interesting, too?
- 13:55[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I don't know if you guys ever, I haven't, I didn't look this up.
- 13:58[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't think of it till you said it, but here you are from Santa Clara no longer as a football program.
- 14:02[SPEAKER_00]: Pete Carroll from University of Pacific, and he was, he was the defensive coordinator, well, like at the end of your, yeah, and there's ten of our couple of years right.
- 14:10[SPEAKER_00]: It was so great.
- 14:12[SPEAKER_00]: Well, what was he like, I mean, he's still going.
- 14:15[SPEAKER_00]: It's pretty good.
- 14:15[SPEAKER_01]: You know what?
- 14:16[SPEAKER_01]: I love the guy.
- 14:17[SPEAKER_01]: He was ahead of his time kind of embraced the game and kind of the fun, jovial nature.
- 14:26[SPEAKER_01]: Like we get a play a game for a living.
- 14:28[SPEAKER_01]: We get a coach a game for a living and he always
- 14:31[SPEAKER_01]: be out throwing the ball around and this I mean this was thirty years ago and He's not any spring chicken nowadays and his time at USC I went and visited him a few times and he was a hundred percent that guy in the guys he's playing he's having fun he's joking around yeah when it's time to get focused on football
- 14:51[SPEAKER_01]: He's great, but he also understands there's there's downtime.
- 14:56[SPEAKER_01]: There's the human nature side of it.
- 14:58[SPEAKER_01]: There's the laughing.
- 14:59[SPEAKER_01]: There's the teasing.
- 15:00[SPEAKER_01]: There's the encouraging and he's out there.
- 15:03[SPEAKER_01]: throwing it, catching it, making a juke move.
- 15:07[SPEAKER_01]: And I guarantee you he's still doing that.
- 15:10[SPEAKER_01]: He'll do that till he drops.
- 15:12[SPEAKER_01]: And what that does is guys buy in.
- 15:14[SPEAKER_01]: They love his personality and they just love having them around and they play well for him.
- 15:21[SPEAKER_01]: And I think he's going to do well.
- 15:23[SPEAKER_00]: It's funny, like there's a, you know, listening to Walsh's book or reading Pete's book or like what you're saying, there's a, somebody some philosopher said, you know, the quote like, um, it's, it's far too important to take seriously.
- 15:36[SPEAKER_00]: And you know, like, when I watch Pete, like that's what I think built the wall stuff that I, you know, it's all third hand or hear stories.
- 15:43[SPEAKER_00]: I don't,
- 15:45[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know if it was, you know, you don't, I don't see it.
- 15:49[SPEAKER_01]: There was, and he had a very dry, dry sense of humor.
- 15:55[SPEAKER_01]: And yet, it wasn't his natural disposition.
- 15:58[SPEAKER_01]: His natural disposition was, we've got to focus on the details and we've got to, you know, turn over every rock.
- 16:06[SPEAKER_01]: But it would come out now and then.
- 16:07[SPEAKER_01]: And if he, you know, if he said something funny once a week or once every other week,
- 16:13[SPEAKER_01]: Man, it would carry a lot of weight because you think, you know, Coach Walls doesn't have a sense of humor.
- 16:21[SPEAKER_01]: Actually, George Cifford was very similar in his approach as well.
- 16:27[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you told the story about stealing a shoe.
- 16:29[SPEAKER_00]: So you must have felt comfortable.
- 16:31[SPEAKER_00]: The George would have, oh, man, since I don't even.
- 16:33[SPEAKER_01]: Of course, I didn't tell it till years after I was done because I was still a little afraid of him.
- 16:39[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, he was a pretty serious guy.
- 16:42[SPEAKER_01]: You know, when there were times where he would crack a joke about himself or or tease guys or mess around, but it like most of the time, it was, we've got to focus on these things.
- 16:55[SPEAKER_01]: And no,
- 16:56[SPEAKER_01]: It feels like you have a long time to prepare for a team.
- 16:59[SPEAKER_01]: But during the course of a week, it's tough to get in and accomplish all you'd like to do.
- 17:06[SPEAKER_01]: I'm sure as a coaching staff in order to get ready for the upcoming game.
- 17:09[SPEAKER_01]: And so I think he was always driven by that.
- 17:12[SPEAKER_01]: Like we can't waste time.
- 17:13[SPEAKER_01]: We can't have time to laugh and screw around.
- 17:16[SPEAKER_01]: We've got to focus.
- 17:17[SPEAKER_01]: And so it worked for so many years.
- 17:21[SPEAKER_01]: And I think George certainly got a lot of that.
- 17:24[SPEAKER_01]: from Bill.
- 17:25[SPEAKER_01]: And then ironically, my last year, here comes Steve Marieucci, you know, a junior Pete Carroll, fun-loving with Joe can around and only a few years older than some of us old guys at the time and great football mind and was focused, but he, he was fun-loving and had a personality and you could mess with them and and joke with them
- 17:50[SPEAKER_01]: a majority of the time.
- 17:52[SPEAKER_00]: And you must have thought, I mean, that was your, like you said, your last year, you guys go to the NFC Championship again.
- 17:57[SPEAKER_00]: So it was that seven and eleven, forty nine or seasons for you, which is, it wasn't hard to walk away that year.
- 18:06[SPEAKER_00]: How did you, you know, I text, one thing I thought would be interesting to ask you about is, is how tight ends age, because it's such a unique position.
- 18:13[SPEAKER_00]: Nobody does everything in the way that a tight end does.
- 18:18[SPEAKER_00]: But what was it like at the at the end for you?
- 18:20[SPEAKER_01]: It's really hard because you kind of feel I felt like I think I can play it all thirty seven or thirty eight and then I turned thirty four prior to my last year and was going to turn thirty five at the end and
- 18:38[SPEAKER_01]: What really, the toughest thing is your legs go in your hips, like you start to have hip flexures.
- 18:44[SPEAKER_01]: You have hamstrings, it's muscles, it's all about the legs.
- 18:49[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, in the middle of the season, I got hit.
- 18:52[SPEAKER_01]: It wasn't that bad, and I broke my leg.
- 18:54[SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, you gotta be kidding me, and so I was out for four or five weeks while that healed.
- 19:00[SPEAKER_01]: And it just kind of the fact that I was having trouble with my legs, I broke my leg,
- 19:07[SPEAKER_01]: I broke my wrist.
- 19:08[SPEAKER_01]: I was playing with a cast on.
- 19:11[SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, it was cumbersome, but I was catching everything.
- 19:15[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, I'm not letting this cast make me draw a pass.
- 19:17[SPEAKER_01]: And so I was running around doing stuff like that.
- 19:20[SPEAKER_01]: And then you just get to the point where, man, I got hit.
- 19:23[SPEAKER_01]: I had a had a concussion my last year.
- 19:28[SPEAKER_01]: And that was like my eighth one.
- 19:30[SPEAKER_01]: And I mean, that sounds outrageous nowadays.
- 19:34[SPEAKER_01]: And so I had the concussion.
- 19:36[SPEAKER_01]: had a broken leg, had a broken wrist, turned in thirty five, and it's like legs are a challenge to get ready.
- 19:44[SPEAKER_01]: And then I was thinking of myself, you know, what am I trying to prove at this point?
- 19:48[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it's so hard to walk away.
- 19:51[SPEAKER_01]: But, you know, three super balls, you've been there, you've been at the top, you've done all the things that you would have dreamed of doing.
- 20:00[SPEAKER_01]: And then it's like, okay, physically, how am I going to be when I'm, when I'm fifty?
- 20:06[SPEAKER_01]: Really, you don't typically think like that.
- 20:09[SPEAKER_01]: And so the fact that I was thinking about that probably led me more and more to the end of the season, like before the playoffs, just say, you know what, this is going to be it.
- 20:20[SPEAKER_01]: I think I'm, you know, I could maybe I could have extracted another year or two, but it would have been a pole hamstring there.
- 20:26[SPEAKER_01]: I should I tore my cap, my last practice, and
- 20:30[SPEAKER_01]: You know, how to get shot up and you know, I think I might have played twenty five plays in the championship game.
- 20:36[SPEAKER_01]: I was it just it was one thing after another after another and.
- 20:41[SPEAKER_01]: Eventually, those years of playing tied in, it's such a unique position because they want you to be alignment, and then they want you to be a receiver at the same time.
- 20:51[SPEAKER_01]: And it's the wear and tear on you when you're inside on a running plane and blocking a guy and getting
- 21:03[SPEAKER_01]: drive them into the pile and you've got got bodies on top of it, you're getting smashed and drilled and hit, you know, every play.
- 21:11[SPEAKER_01]: It's certainly a fact you're a router on a handhand year, you're receiving abilities and after, you know, so many years.
- 21:18[SPEAKER_01]: It eventually starts to catch up with you.
- 21:20[SPEAKER_01]: It was weird.
- 21:20[SPEAKER_01]: I was, it really, the modern day example is I think Travis Kelsey last year was really feeling it.
- 21:31[SPEAKER_01]: I thought he might step back, but he's, I guess he's worked himself in a better shape and lost some weight.
- 21:37[SPEAKER_01]: But there's a point in time where you can kind of say, man, I'm not playing like I used to do the proverbial loss to step.
- 21:46[SPEAKER_01]: And so I'm more excited about watching George Kittle.
- 21:50[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like if anybody can pull it off and go to least, you know, thirty-six or thirty-seven, you know,
- 21:58[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe George can do it, but it's those little nagging injuries that start to get to you.
- 22:05[SPEAKER_01]: And then it just feels like every week is a slog just to get to Sunday.
- 22:10[SPEAKER_01]: And you know, you don't want to go out being a guy that hangs on for dear life.
- 22:17[SPEAKER_01]: You'd rather just be a guy that said, hey, I played at the game like I
- 22:21[SPEAKER_01]: like I wanted to and you go out on your own accord.
- 22:25[SPEAKER_00]: George is trying.
- 22:26[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 22:27[SPEAKER_00]: Do you see the day said he spends about two hundred thousand dollars a year?
- 22:30[SPEAKER_00]: I think he said in season on maintaining, man, his body.
- 22:34[SPEAKER_00]: It's pretty, it's pretty awesome.
- 22:36[SPEAKER_01]: And it's it's certainly paying off for him and rooting for him to go, to go deep into the thirties would be awesome.
- 22:45[SPEAKER_01]: These guys need a super bowl though, Brad.
- 22:47[SPEAKER_01]: I, man, I got to say,
- 22:49[SPEAKER_01]: And guys, where did I look back in over a couple of years?
- 22:52[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, the the nineties season when we were going to three p. and we fumbled with a couple minutes left in the game.
- 22:59[SPEAKER_01]: It was just got wrenching.
- 23:03[SPEAKER_01]: The year that we didn't get in where ten and six, the red skins one, we had to walk the red skins.
- 23:07[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, there was, you'd Steve Young broke his ribs.
- 23:12[SPEAKER_01]: We played in Green Bay and we, we,
- 23:15[SPEAKER_01]: playing bad weather and Steve couldn't play.
- 23:18[SPEAKER_01]: So I look back and I think, gosh, I
- 23:21[SPEAKER_01]: In my mind, I thought I should have had five Super Bowl rings and I have three and I'm so thankful and you realize it is so dang tough to get all the way through to survive the injury bug and to play at a high level and come home with that Super Bowl trophy is just so hard in it.
- 23:41[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, every year, I mean, most teams think, hey, this is going to be our year.
- 23:46[SPEAKER_01]: We got a really great shot and
- 23:47[SPEAKER_01]: in most teams really don't, but that's the beauty of the game.
- 23:51[SPEAKER_01]: Everybody thinks that they do and so our Niners
- 23:55[SPEAKER_01]: certainly do and it's it's been great to watch.
- 23:59[SPEAKER_01]: The organization spend the money to keep the cord together and you can't keep everybody in this day and age.
- 24:06[SPEAKER_01]: There's really one of the things about my career that I was thinking about the other day, you know, up until ninety three, ninety four.
- 24:14[SPEAKER_01]: We didn't have free agency.
- 24:16[SPEAKER_01]: So players basically you are with the same organization and you knew
- 24:20[SPEAKER_01]: who you are playing against and teams were the team.
- 24:23[SPEAKER_01]: Do you be playing those guys every, you know, every year, especially in our division, we plant twice a year and be the same guys.
- 24:32[SPEAKER_01]: There wasn't all this movement.
- 24:33[SPEAKER_01]: And so the game is drastically changed, but not every organization pays the money.
- 24:41[SPEAKER_01]: to keep their players and everybody talks about the window.
- 24:45[SPEAKER_01]: We've kept the window open for a pretty long time and I love the fact that we've got it open for a few more years because we're one of the five or six teams that can have a serious claim to potentially win in it.
- 24:58[SPEAKER_00]: It is crazy when you think about, you look through history of any sport
- 25:04[SPEAKER_00]: Jordan, everybody, like great coaches, it takes a great coaching staff and multiple all-time great players, like that's who wins championships.
- 25:16[SPEAKER_00]: And so you look at this night as roster and it's Bosa and Kittle and Trent Williams and Christian McCaffrey and you know, use check, it's funny the night is such a great history of fullbacks and Fred Warner and you know, hopefully that's enough for Brock, because it seems like he's got
- 25:35[SPEAKER_00]: He's got something.
- 25:36[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, to get to this point.
- 25:37[SPEAKER_01]: I absolutely believe that.
- 25:39[SPEAKER_01]: And you know, it's, I'd be hard pressed to find a team that has more of those names of guys like that you just mentioned.
- 25:48[SPEAKER_01]: There's probably some teams that have close or maybe they have as many, but at some point at boils down to, okay, we got to go out on the field and what are played at the talking.
- 25:57[SPEAKER_01]: And yeah, you got to be a little lucky injury wise and in matchup wise, but yeah, there's, there's only a handful of teams that can
- 26:05[SPEAKER_01]: they can say that they have what we have and it's great as a fan to know that we've got a ownership and a management group that says hey we're going for every year that we think we can and that's fantastic.
- 26:20[SPEAKER_00]: What if you thought watching party like what do you think watching them you know the year before he was an MVP candidate last year
- 26:26[SPEAKER_00]: then it was a totally different, I hate to use the word narrative, but narrative, but I thought it was largely the same player, a lot of other things around him changed.
- 26:36[SPEAKER_00]: So I don't, what's your, I agree.
- 26:38[SPEAKER_01]: Well, it's been a, it's been a treat to watch him play.
- 26:43[SPEAKER_01]: I think that he, I think I maybe I relate to him just a little bit because the expectation level was low, you know, he came out of nowhere.
- 26:55[SPEAKER_01]: not highly sought after being the last pick.
- 26:59[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm sure he has used that as a chip on a shoulder and he's such a good guy.
- 27:04[SPEAKER_01]: He's probably not going to say that.
- 27:06[SPEAKER_01]: But, you know, just watching him process.
- 27:11[SPEAKER_01]: And so it's weird.
- 27:13[SPEAKER_01]: I watched the game differently sometimes every week depending on who's playing, depending on what's going on.
- 27:22[SPEAKER_01]: Everybody jumps all over and anybody when they make a comparison.
- 27:24[SPEAKER_01]: But Joe Montana was in my mind, the greatest processor that I've ever seen.
- 27:29[SPEAKER_01]: He knew where he was going to go with the ball and it could be the fifth read on a play, but he knew instantaneously that it was going to that guy just because of the way the defense.
- 27:40[SPEAKER_01]: ended up moving or checking or bounced, he'd read it immediately no matter what.
- 27:46[SPEAKER_01]: And he knew where he was going with the ball, a majority of the time.
- 27:50[SPEAKER_01]: Now that's not every play.
- 27:52[SPEAKER_01]: But, and so what I started to see early on in Brock's career was man, he processes fast and gets rid of the ball and is accurate and a lot of times hits the open man.
- 28:05[SPEAKER_01]: And
- 28:06[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's been fantastic to watch.
- 28:09[SPEAKER_01]: And I think they're last year with some of the injuries.
- 28:13[SPEAKER_01]: I think he pressed in a long esteem and he was getting some pressure, more and more pressure.
- 28:21[SPEAKER_01]: And I think he was probably trying to put the ball into areas a few times that probably
- 28:33[SPEAKER_01]: is better off not taking that risk.
- 28:37[SPEAKER_01]: But I think he was forced to take more chances last year, the way the season was unfolding.
- 28:42[SPEAKER_01]: And so he was going for it.
- 28:46[SPEAKER_01]: And you know, we had a band of injuries at receiver.
- 28:50[SPEAKER_01]: We had different guys in there, we had new guys.
- 28:53[SPEAKER_01]: And sometimes
- 28:55[SPEAKER_01]: And you know this, there's sometimes the interception is a hundred percent on the receiver.
- 29:00[SPEAKER_01]: But Brock Party's never going to be the guy where you think that it was the receiver because he's never going to point or pout or throw his arms up in the air or do things that other quarterbacks do sometimes to make sure everybody knows it's not on them.
- 29:15[SPEAKER_01]: And so he's that kind of a teammate.
- 29:17[SPEAKER_01]: And so sometimes it's tough to know as a fan, hey, you know, is that on the receiver?
- 29:21[SPEAKER_01]: Was that on the quarterback?
- 29:23[SPEAKER_01]: But I think he was taking more calculated risks just because the way things were and we were banged up a lot of the time and playing from behind.
- 29:32[SPEAKER_01]: And so you got to make some things happen.
- 29:35[SPEAKER_01]: But I still love the way played, love the way it competes.
- 29:39[SPEAKER_01]: And he's just a solid kid all the way around.
- 29:43[SPEAKER_01]: And you don't have to have the strongest arm in the NFL.
- 29:48[SPEAKER_01]: His arm is plenty strong.
- 29:51[SPEAKER_01]: But Joe wasn't
- 29:52[SPEAKER_01]: Anyway, or Jim Calay or Dan Moreno, but he's the one with all the Super Bowl rings, and it's because his anticipation and his accuracy and his ability to read the defenses were unlike
- 30:08[SPEAKER_01]: anybody that I've ever seen.
- 30:10[SPEAKER_01]: And so I think Brock has a lot of those characteristics, and I'm excited to see him with a full group of healthy players, and especially, and we hadn't even mentioned this, you know, everything changes without McAfrey back as you're running back.
- 30:25[SPEAKER_01]: Not only running the ball, but coming out of the back field, and that's to have him not there was a big miss too for Brock.
- 30:33[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I'm glad you brought up Armstrong.
- 30:35[SPEAKER_00]: I remember a couple years ago going back and watching the whole drive that led up to the catch.
- 30:41[SPEAKER_00]: Montana phone, they did like five turnovers in that game, right?
- 30:44[SPEAKER_00]: Montana makes this throw to the far sideline early in that drive.
- 30:48[SPEAKER_00]: That is, it like makes your heart jump.
- 30:51[SPEAKER_00]: I can't believe he's trying to make, but, you know, the interests.
- 30:55[SPEAKER_00]: Brock makes these throws that when you watch like the camera angle from behind the quarterback.
- 30:59[SPEAKER_00]: And you see when he has to decide to throw it and we're, that's the part that I think to those of us who just stood on the couch.
- 31:07[SPEAKER_00]: It's so hard to understand how much you guys are in tissip.
- 31:10[SPEAKER_00]: Like where the next guy who's moving is fast,
- 31:13[SPEAKER_01]: as a train is going to be that's the part that is just it's super remarkable you know guys I mean when you're on the field and you see it it's just it's magical because it has to happen before it's obvious and that's what's really great about the game but it's special about quarterbacks that can make that that throw before a guy gets out of his break and it's just
- 31:40[SPEAKER_01]: It's mind boggling with all those guys.
- 31:42[SPEAKER_01]: The big guys coming down on you and pressure coming in your face and just stepping up and making the throw.
- 31:49[SPEAKER_01]: And so, I mean, I was really glad the Forty Niners gave him his deal.
- 31:56[SPEAKER_01]: I think he was very cognizant of not needing to break the bank, make sure it was team friendly so we can make sure to keep other key players and
- 32:08[SPEAKER_01]: I think that's what you hope for in your leader on your football team.
- 32:13[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, you played with two of them.
- 32:14[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, you know, your top ten list, these guys might both be in the top six.
- 32:19[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know where you would.
- 32:21[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they're definitely there.
- 32:25[SPEAKER_01]: And it's pretty special to think, you know, it's weird when you're going through it.
- 32:30[SPEAKER_01]: You don't look
- 32:32[SPEAKER_01]: necessarily at, okay, where are we in history and what are you talking about?
- 32:36[SPEAKER_01]: The only time that I really was aware was when we were going to win, when I thought we were going to win three Super Bowls in Rome.
- 32:42[SPEAKER_01]: I'd be like, yeah, that's repeat that.
- 32:46[SPEAKER_01]: I remember at the end of my career, when we when Joe left to Kansas City, I remember thinking, no one's going to be better than Joe.
- 32:54[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you want four Super Bowls.
- 32:56[SPEAKER_01]: There's no way that anyone quarterback is going to ever win five.
- 33:01[SPEAKER_01]: then a long came Tom Brady.
- 33:04[SPEAKER_01]: And so, but it's just to play with both Steve and Joe.
- 33:09[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, amazing, funny, competitive, focused, bright, sophisticated, great processing guys.
- 33:20[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 33:21[SPEAKER_00]: And needed you, like that's probably part of the fun too, right?
- 33:24[SPEAKER_00]: It's understanding what a key cog in the whole thing.
- 33:28[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, we're.
- 33:30[SPEAKER_01]: Jerry J. T. and I are always saying, well, we made to Hall of Fame quarterback, wasn't you guys?
- 33:36[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 33:38[SPEAKER_00]: But you know what the beauty of football is?
- 33:39[SPEAKER_00]: There is some kernel of truth in that.
- 33:42[SPEAKER_00]: Like you can't everybody makes everybody, you know, the sport is just so true and got people lose that and they don't necessarily know.
- 33:52[SPEAKER_01]: Like it's hard to have a great quarterback without great receivers.
- 33:56[SPEAKER_01]: And it's great.
- 33:56[SPEAKER_01]: It's hard to be a great receiver without a great quarterback.
- 33:59[SPEAKER_01]: We've seen that a more than a few times in these last couple years.
- 34:02[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's just
- 34:05[SPEAKER_01]: It's just the way it goes.
- 34:06[SPEAKER_01]: It all works together.
- 34:07[SPEAKER_01]: I know the quarterbacks do get an awful lot of the attention, but there's so many things, whether it's the lime and whether it's the center, whether it's the play calling.
- 34:17[SPEAKER_01]: There's so many variables that go into it that people don't really realize and I don't have a problem.
- 34:24[SPEAKER_01]: Quarterbacks are certainly taken the lion's share of the burden.
- 34:29[SPEAKER_01]: And so they should get the credit, but there's so many variables that go into a play that you just don't think about.
- 34:36[SPEAKER_01]: It really opened my eyes my first couple years under Bill Walsh in how meticulous he was.
- 34:44[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, whether you yell at you about coming out of a route, a half a yard early and you're thinking a half a yard like, what the heck?
- 34:51[SPEAKER_01]: That doesn't matter.
- 34:52[SPEAKER_01]: It doesn't matter.
- 34:53[SPEAKER_01]: And I can't tell you how many times he'd be yelling at Joe for putting the ball right on my numbers instead of, you know, six inches out.
- 35:01[SPEAKER_01]: So I wouldn't have to break stride or have a half a stride breakdown because he said, that's the difference between getting an extra ten or fifteen yards or getting tackled on the spot.
- 35:09[SPEAKER_01]: And we go through these things time and time and time again.
- 35:13[SPEAKER_01]: just so redundant and you think yourself why the heck are we doing this we're going over this again and again like we all know this
- 35:22[SPEAKER_01]: But it became second nature, so under pressure in big moments and the drive against the bangles and over time in two minute drills and all these different big playoff games.
- 35:34[SPEAKER_01]: You don't think about it.
- 35:35[SPEAKER_01]: You're doing it exactly how you'd always done it.
- 35:38[SPEAKER_01]: And that repetition and just obsessive attention to detail made it.
- 35:45[SPEAKER_01]: Understandable me that like wow, there's so many things that have to work for a play to truly be successful.
- 35:52[SPEAKER_00]: But was it crazy when the quarterbacks tried to start their own union just for the quarterbacks?
- 35:56[SPEAKER_00]: It was greedy suckers.
- 35:58[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 35:59[SPEAKER_00]: What was that, Eggman?
- 35:59[SPEAKER_00]: What was that deal?
- 36:01[SPEAKER_01]: You know, it was, yeah, what was the quarterback club of suckers?
- 36:06[SPEAKER_00]: Were you still in the league?
- 36:07[SPEAKER_01]: Was that when you were like, hey, you guys aren't making enough money.
- 36:10[SPEAKER_01]: Now, comparatively, they probably were making nothing, but
- 36:14[SPEAKER_01]: They were ten acts everybody else is, you know, fighting.
- 36:19[SPEAKER_01]: We just came out of the strike and we're, you know, we got a little bit, but we didn't get much what eventually would, which turned into free agency.
- 36:29[SPEAKER_01]: So.
- 36:32[SPEAKER_01]: eventually players really benefit, but not anybody that was out on strike.
- 36:37[SPEAKER_01]: And then here come the quarterbacks.
- 36:38[SPEAKER_01]: They're going to start a quarterback club.
- 36:39[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to market it and we're just going to all be about ourselves and make extra money and it's like you suckers.
- 36:47[SPEAKER_01]: And in terms of using that.
- 36:49[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 36:51[SPEAKER_01]: You know, that's why I love tight-end university.
- 36:54[SPEAKER_01]: Like, kid, it'll get some, you know, it's great.
- 36:56[SPEAKER_01]: Get some puff for those guys because they want to start.
- 36:58[SPEAKER_01]: He said, we're going to start the tight-end club and they would just kind of like,
- 37:02[SPEAKER_01]: Nobody cares, nobody's gonna pay for that.
- 37:04[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 37:05[SPEAKER_00]: You gotta get out there.
- 37:05[SPEAKER_00]: You gotta go, they just had it last week.
- 37:07[SPEAKER_00]: I know.
- 37:08[SPEAKER_00]: I, man, I just killed and get a t-shirt.
- 37:11[SPEAKER_00]: It's the sponsors are amazing.
- 37:12[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it's just like beer and it's a great food.
- 37:15[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it seems like a lot of fun.
- 37:17[SPEAKER_01]: Those guys have some, I mean, there's a, a will and an enthusiasm from those guys at the highest level and, you know, being around George a few times like his,
- 37:29[SPEAKER_01]: He's just electric and he's always like that.
- 37:32[SPEAKER_01]: And so his personality can carry the day and a few of those guys.
- 37:37[SPEAKER_01]: And the fact that they got it up and rolling and now it's a big deal.
- 37:40[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they got to not let that sucker go.
- 37:43[SPEAKER_01]: Be revenge of the tight ends on that quarterback club thing.
- 37:47[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I want to ask you about Ricky Pierce all because, and I don't know to what degree it's comparable, but you know, you were in a very serious car accident.
- 37:57[SPEAKER_00]: You're rookie year.
- 37:59[SPEAKER_00]: I hope you don't mind me asking about that.
- 38:01[SPEAKER_00]: You got hit, you and your wife got hit head on by a drunk driver driving the wrong direction.
- 38:05[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 38:06[SPEAKER_00]: And it cost you your rookie season with the Steelers, with few people, I don't, you people realize, you know, Ricky got shot.
- 38:15[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, he's laying there on the street in San Francisco thinking he might die.
- 38:19[SPEAKER_00]: And amazingly, he was able to come back and play last year and finish the year strong.
- 38:25[SPEAKER_00]: But did you think, when you saw that situation unfolding, did it remind you in any way of what you went through?
- 38:32[SPEAKER_00]: It did.
- 38:32[SPEAKER_01]: And obviously, I wasn't shot.
- 38:34[SPEAKER_01]: That was a little bit more serious than my car accident, although it was frightening that the time the car accident.
- 38:40[SPEAKER_01]: But getting shot and thinking, gosh, young guys career could be taken away before it even started.
- 38:49[SPEAKER_01]: But he was diligent.
- 38:51[SPEAKER_01]: And what people don't realize is he had to put in the work the whole time he was recovering.
- 38:57[SPEAKER_01]: Because when he first came back and he wasn't, he wasn't making much of an impact.
- 39:02[SPEAKER_01]: But he was great that he was out there.
- 39:03[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, wow, fantastic.
- 39:06[SPEAKER_01]: But his last couple games, you can kind of tell it.
- 39:08[SPEAKER_01]: It started to click form.
- 39:10[SPEAKER_01]: And his route running was more precise.
- 39:13[SPEAKER_01]: He was sharp and at accounts, catching the ball, gaining confidence.
- 39:17[SPEAKER_01]: And it was like, wow, that was super impressive.
- 39:21[SPEAKER_01]: just to know that he finished the year strong.
- 39:24[SPEAKER_01]: And I mean, that can really catapult a guy with that confidence and with that, you know, even minimal success into the off season, into the season coming up.
- 39:34[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm glad you brought up his name because I kind of look for him to really be a big contributor this year.
- 39:42[SPEAKER_01]: And so what a special young man to be able to fight back from all that because, I mean, you don't need
- 39:49[SPEAKER_01]: At the time, you're not even worried about football, like, hey, man, I hope he's going to be okay.
- 39:55[SPEAKER_01]: That's remarkable that that even happened.
- 39:58[SPEAKER_01]: But then just to be fortunate enough to not have it, you know, have any lasting effect on his body and to be able to come back and play was remarkable in and of itself.
- 40:11[SPEAKER_01]: But to actually see it click, form really kind of made it special at the end of the year.
- 40:18[SPEAKER_00]: It almost, you know, it feels weird to ask about like, a guy's, you had this near death experience.
- 40:23[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 40:24[SPEAKER_00]: But, oh, but how does it affect your, but it's, it's the whole person, right?
- 40:27[SPEAKER_00]: Like you the whole person had to then try and worry about, you had an injury, your wife had an, your girlfriend, were you guys married yet?
- 40:35[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, we were engaged.
- 40:37[SPEAKER_00]: You're engaged.
- 40:38[SPEAKER_00]: And then you get caught by the Steelers, like it was the worst guys.
- 40:44[SPEAKER_00]: And then like, I don't know, you have like, what, eight, ten combined catches in the next two years.
- 40:50[SPEAKER_00]: You know, you're a fifth round pick.
- 40:51[SPEAKER_00]: He's a first one, but still it's, there's just a lot going on as you're trying to figure out.
- 40:56[SPEAKER_00]: And I would imagine the other thing, Brent, as you know, like my window is this big to make this thing work.
- 41:02[SPEAKER_00]: That's really true.
- 41:04[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you know, guys, those are the toughest times when
- 41:07[SPEAKER_01]: You don't have an opportunity, you know, offseason is one thing, but anybody can look good in the offseason.
- 41:13[SPEAKER_01]: So you got to do it when it matters.
- 41:15[SPEAKER_01]: And that, back for me, it was training camp, you know, you had to make a name for yourself and training camp.
- 41:20[SPEAKER_01]: That meant making catches that you shouldn't be making.
- 41:23[SPEAKER_01]: That meant dropping balls.
- 41:25[SPEAKER_01]: That meant, you know, making some big blocks even to get on the radar when you
- 41:30[SPEAKER_01]: came to a team we went to camp my first year with the forty nine years I think with a hundred and twenty five guys there was no eighty man so getting wraps was a challenge and then met you know making the team and hanging on and fighting and then you know rush Francis and John Frank were ahead of me it's like okay well I've got to have to put in some some time and effort some years and things just
- 41:55[SPEAKER_01]: unfolded and and then it's the classic hey when you get your opportunity you better you better step up and step through that window and make a statement.
- 42:05[SPEAKER_01]: And so all those things are going through your mind at the time, but it's it's weird to look back because it seems like I'm awful lot of mental preparedness, but you just kind of
- 42:16[SPEAKER_01]: It's each and every day.
- 42:18[SPEAKER_01]: You need to have a good practice in the morning of training camp.
- 42:22[SPEAKER_01]: And now I got to have a good afternoon practice.
- 42:24[SPEAKER_01]: Now I got to make sure I know all my assignments.
- 42:27[SPEAKER_01]: Now, hey, the next day, hey, we've got a preseason game.
- 42:30[SPEAKER_01]: Hey, if I get in there, you know, I need to, you know, make an impact relative to that.
- 42:35[SPEAKER_01]: And it's just slow, methodical.
- 42:39[SPEAKER_01]: process, which right now in my mind, I'm like, yeah, how did I even do that?
- 42:43[SPEAKER_01]: But at the time, we're disciplined to do it one step at a time.
- 42:49[SPEAKER_01]: Then when you get your chance, you roll.
- 42:51[SPEAKER_01]: And then you kind of feel like, man, I've been rolling for so long.
- 42:54[SPEAKER_01]: I don't remember those early days.
- 42:56[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, our offense was so high powered.
- 43:00[SPEAKER_01]: We would operate on all cylinders, a majority of the time.
- 43:05[SPEAKER_01]: And then obviously,
- 43:08[SPEAKER_01]: Joe getting injured, and then the greatest classic moment for Steve, he's like, okay, let's see what you got, and he stepped up.
- 43:16[SPEAKER_01]: And so, and had a Hall of Fame career following one, which is remarkable.
- 43:22[SPEAKER_01]: There's so many great storylines back in those days, and the bar was set so high for us.
- 43:32[SPEAKER_01]: The whole time I was there, but that made it fun, it made it exciting.
- 43:37[SPEAKER_00]: it's funny you mentioned like you didn't you could have picked your free agent so you could have picked the future you picked yes you know the bag is pretty hard yeah but then it's like alright which team well let me go to one of the best teams in the league maybe I'll go make that team you know that's that's so it's but um I just want to if I could on Ricky what what did you see what what did you see with him as a player that you think is promising
- 44:04[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I actually think his burst is fantastic.
- 44:08[SPEAKER_01]: And what I really started to see was he started to get separation.
- 44:11[SPEAKER_01]: And that's the biggest challenge, right?
- 44:12[SPEAKER_01]: You can be straight ahead, you know, great speed.
- 44:16[SPEAKER_01]: But if you can't get it in and out of your breaks and separate, because those defensive backs are tremendous athletes, you've got to get, you know, you've got to get open basically as when people say separation is basically the same thing, but you've got to get that.
- 44:30[SPEAKER_01]: that distance and I started seeing him after the first couple of weeks because it's fun, you know, hey, he's coming back from being shot.
- 44:37[SPEAKER_01]: He's, you know, he's going to play in the game.
- 44:38[SPEAKER_01]: We're remarkable.
- 44:40[SPEAKER_01]: That was a win.
- 44:40[SPEAKER_01]: If nothing else even happened, I would have said, you know what?
- 44:43[SPEAKER_01]: God bless you, Ricky.
- 44:44[SPEAKER_01]: That's spectacular.
- 44:46[SPEAKER_01]: But then, like, okay, is he gonna be a contributor?
- 44:49[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, here's our first round pick, and we're gonna throw him the ball, and he didn't get a lot of opportunities early on, and then, you know, all of a sudden, I was watching him, and it's like, okay, hey, we threw him the ball, man, that was a good route, and then I'm watching him, man, he's getting at that break, and go, look at that, we could have thrown him that ball on the backside, and so you could almost, and I hadn't met Ricky, and I didn't,
- 45:16[SPEAKER_01]: I was there for a couple of games, but I wasn't there at the end of the season.
- 45:22[SPEAKER_01]: but you could almost feel the confidence growing in him.
- 45:25[SPEAKER_01]: And it's like, hey, I can do this.
- 45:28[SPEAKER_01]: And I know what I need to do to get open, to make catches, to be a playmaker on this team.
- 45:35[SPEAKER_01]: And so that's why I felt like, gosh, he's going to have this whole off season.
- 45:40[SPEAKER_01]: I guarantee he's got confidence.
- 45:41[SPEAKER_01]: I know he knows what he needs to do to be a successful, wide receiver.
- 45:46[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, I know everyone's concerned Brandon's, you know, still coming off his knee.
- 45:52[SPEAKER_01]: Debo's gone.
- 45:53[SPEAKER_01]: And so everyone's like, well, what have we got?
- 45:55[SPEAKER_01]: Well, man, do not sleep on this guy because I think he's in the B, you know, maybe not the amount of catches, but I think he's going to be Puka Nikua like.
- 46:08[SPEAKER_01]: at some point.
- 46:09[SPEAKER_01]: Wow, that's awesome.
- 46:10[SPEAKER_00]: That's the beauty of a tight end is you could come here and break down blocking scheme and you can break down receiving.
- 46:16[SPEAKER_00]: You know, it's just there's not it's like, oh, Tony, like you guys are like the show.
- 46:19[SPEAKER_00]: Hey, Otani's it's fun.
- 46:21[SPEAKER_01]: I always say that, you know, tight ends.
- 46:24[SPEAKER_01]: We need some love.
- 46:24[SPEAKER_01]: So we always tell each other that, you know, besides the quarterbacks, we're the next marvelous guys because we have to know so many.
- 46:33[SPEAKER_01]: positions.
- 46:33[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, in the end, you got to know what the lines doing and you got to know what the receivers are doing.
- 46:37[SPEAKER_01]: You got to know what the backs are doing.
- 46:38[SPEAKER_01]: And it's like, OK, well, if we know all that, we know more than everybody else other than the quarterbacks.
- 46:43[SPEAKER_01]: And so yeah, we always talk about how smart we are.
- 46:46[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I don't think I, I was saying today, I think if you gave, if you took the whole Shanahan tree.
- 46:52[SPEAKER_00]: and you gave them like a test on paper.
- 46:55[SPEAKER_00]: And you included use check in it.
- 46:57[SPEAKER_00]: Like all the coaches and juice.
- 46:58[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 46:59[SPEAKER_00]: And it has nothing to do with Harvard.
- 47:01[SPEAKER_00]: Like I don't think it has anything to do.
- 47:03[SPEAKER_00]: But he's so often you'll watch him.
- 47:05[SPEAKER_00]: And you know, it's everything's miced up.
- 47:07[SPEAKER_00]: So you can hear him.
- 47:08[SPEAKER_00]: Like Brandon over here, or Jimmy, no, you know, I remember he did it with Garoppolo.
- 47:12[SPEAKER_00]: He's done it with Perti.
- 47:13[SPEAKER_00]: He just
- 47:14[SPEAKER_00]: If you have to know the run game, and that's the beauty like the Mike McDaniel story was that he figured out McVay and LaFlor, their Kyle's past game guys.
- 47:23[SPEAKER_00]: I'll go learn the run game from Forster and become a different asset.
- 47:27[SPEAKER_00]: And it's just, I call college football games.
- 47:31[SPEAKER_00]: I remember learning a few years ago, I was doing a game with a guy who's an analyst who's a running back.
- 47:37[SPEAKER_00]: And we had a meeting with the offensive coordinator of one of the teams.
- 47:40[SPEAKER_00]: And we came out of the meeting and he said to me, he doesn't know the run game.
- 47:43[SPEAKER_00]: And like, what are you talking about?
- 47:44[SPEAKER_00]: He's like, he doesn't understand the run game.
- 47:47[SPEAKER_00]: Like, how, how is that possible?
- 47:49[SPEAKER_00]: And he said, you would be shocked at how many people don't understand the run game.
- 47:53[SPEAKER_01]: I think that's right.
- 47:54[SPEAKER_01]: And it used to be the opposite.
- 47:56[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, way back in the day, three yards in the cloud of dust, and everybody is run the ball at the time, and guys wouldn't understand the past game.
- 48:03[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, for many years, tight ends weren't even a thought as a receiver.
- 48:08[SPEAKER_01]: But juice is a special guy.
- 48:10[SPEAKER_01]: I'm thrilled that he came back.
- 48:12[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that was kind of got wrenching for the few weeks that he was out and about.
- 48:17[SPEAKER_01]: But Tom Rathman did the same thing.
- 48:20[SPEAKER_01]: And he put people in spots all the time.
- 48:24[SPEAKER_01]: Would check, would be all the offensive line that, you know, hey, we got a linebacker comment, would reposition Roger here there.
- 48:34[SPEAKER_01]: He knew everything as much as the quarterbacks.
- 48:36[SPEAKER_01]: It was pretty remarkable that he knew all that because I used to test them all the time and we, you know, we'd go at it for this and that and the other thing.
- 48:46[SPEAKER_01]: But he was dang bright.
- 48:48[SPEAKER_01]: And so I feel like
- 48:50[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe it's the position, but yeah, a lot of those ask of those guys and since they're hardly any fullbacks anymore, it's great that we've got one of the great ones.
- 49:01[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 49:01[SPEAKER_01]: Do you know when you're coming out?
- 49:02[SPEAKER_01]: Do you know anything about the, uh, it's decent.
- 49:05[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's going to be December, fourteenth for the Titans game.
- 49:08[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 49:09[SPEAKER_01]: I was hoping might be October or November, but
- 49:13[SPEAKER_01]: They're making this statue and we got to have the statue.
- 49:16[SPEAKER_01]: They got to have the statue done.
- 49:18[SPEAKER_01]: I kind of laughed like, wow, I never thought in all of my life, I'd have that statue.
- 49:24[SPEAKER_00]: Wow.
- 49:25[SPEAKER_00]: Do you sit?
- 49:27[SPEAKER_00]: Or they took a photo and they'd take a photo and they'd.
- 49:29[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, the forty-nineers organization.
- 49:35[SPEAKER_01]: I was blown away.
- 49:37[SPEAKER_01]: They said, oh, we went back through a lot of your film and we kind of like the way that you spike the ball and we kind of feel like that was your signature.
- 49:45[SPEAKER_01]: thing, and so we've got a couple different pictures of you doing that.
- 49:48[SPEAKER_01]: And here's what I asked in this.
- 49:49[SPEAKER_01]: And so, so yeah, they've nailed it down.
- 49:52[SPEAKER_01]: So it's awesome.
- 49:53[SPEAKER_01]: It almost made me not even have to think about it.
- 49:55[SPEAKER_01]: Like, wow, this is pretty cool.
- 49:57[SPEAKER_00]: That's really cool.
- 49:58[SPEAKER_00]: Congratulations.
- 49:59[SPEAKER_00]: I know everyone's going to be really excited to see out.
- 50:01[SPEAKER_00]: Do you think you'll come to any more any games before that?
- 50:03[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you know, guy, my, my, my grandsons.
- 50:07[SPEAKER_01]: obsessive forty nine or fans are only five and seven and we've taken them out to a couple games these last couple years which is weird it's hard that it's hard to think back at that age that you could be that big of a fan they have they have jerseys of everybody on the team that I had to explain to them
- 50:29[SPEAKER_01]: Debo, Levin.
- 50:31[SPEAKER_01]: They were sad for Brandon getting hurt.
- 50:34[SPEAKER_01]: This whole, this, unbelievable.
- 50:36[SPEAKER_01]: But my youngest is for he thinks he's Brock Perty as, or he's five now.
- 50:42[SPEAKER_01]: For his fourth birthday, he had a Brock Perty birthday.
- 50:48[SPEAKER_01]: And my daughter's like seriously he's like, yeah, no, that's what I want.
- 50:52[SPEAKER_01]: So we got fat heads of Brock.
- 50:54[SPEAKER_01]: We threw McAfrey in there because the other one thinks he's Christian and these guys have seven jerseys each of that black, they have white, they have red, they have special
- 51:04[SPEAKER_01]: of those players and they do not let up once football season starting.
- 51:09[SPEAKER_01]: So I've come out.
- 51:11[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it's nice for me to come out to a game or alumni weekend.
- 51:14[SPEAKER_01]: Those two knuckleheads are on me every week.
- 51:17[SPEAKER_01]: When are we going to a game?
- 51:18[SPEAKER_01]: And so it's they got a chance to meet.
- 51:21[SPEAKER_01]: Christian was hurt last year, but they got a chance to meet a kiddo and and Brock and they were so great with them.
- 51:27[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, those guys, I mean, they barely know who I am.
- 51:30[SPEAKER_01]: I'm just some old guy coming around saying I used to play, but
- 51:33[SPEAKER_01]: They were so great with the grandkids.
- 51:35[SPEAKER_01]: And they've got the biggest fans out here.
- 51:39[SPEAKER_01]: And so we're in Dallas, cowboy country.
- 51:41[SPEAKER_01]: And the kids are converting their friends to nine-year fans.
- 51:45[SPEAKER_01]: It's unbelievable.
- 51:46[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, we've had four or five parents like approach my daughter saying, so you're the kids, your kids are the ones that are the nine-year kids, huh?
- 51:56[SPEAKER_01]: That are telling my kids, a cowboy stink, and they got a like Brock Perti and Christian McAfrey.
- 52:04[SPEAKER_01]: So that's our, that's our reasoning to come out.
- 52:06[SPEAKER_01]: We've got to come out to a couple of games.
- 52:08[SPEAKER_01]: That's awesome.
- 52:09[SPEAKER_01]: And it'll be nice to get out before December anyway.
- 52:12[SPEAKER_00]: That's great.
- 52:12[SPEAKER_00]: And the beauty, I think one of the things that's so cool about the Niners is that like it's, you know, a lot of former players say what you say in the Niners organization, it does seem like
- 52:22[SPEAKER_00]: And of course, you had a great career.
- 52:23[SPEAKER_00]: So maybe it would apply to any organization, but the players do know, guys are around all the time.
- 52:29[SPEAKER_00]: You see him at practice.
- 52:31[SPEAKER_00]: It does feel maybe it's cliche.
- 52:33[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think it is a little collegial, you know, in the sense where like the former players really are a part of.
- 52:41[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, which is great because I'm assuming most.
- 52:47[SPEAKER_01]: Most teams don't have that and there's change over and there's this and that and the organization looks different every year and we've had a lot of consistency and I think that's great and it's it's it's been fun to be able to be around.
- 52:59[SPEAKER_00]: All right, I've taken a lot of your time.
- 53:01[SPEAKER_00]: I appreciate it.
- 53:03[SPEAKER_00]: Thank you.
- 53:04[SPEAKER_00]: Congratulations.
- 53:04[SPEAKER_00]: Appreciate it, buddy.
- 53:06[SPEAKER_00]: And look forward to seeing us if you could pick any statue spiking the football is
- 53:12[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's different.
- 53:14[SPEAKER_01]: That's for sure.
- 53:15[SPEAKER_01]: And so I thought, you know what?
- 53:17[SPEAKER_01]: I think that's right.
- 53:18[SPEAKER_01]: They did all the analysis and I just said, yeah, okay, that sounds good.
- 53:22[SPEAKER_00]: All right, Brad, thank you so much.
- 53:24[SPEAKER_00]: Appreciate your time.
- 53:25[SPEAKER_01]: Thanks, guys.
- 53:25[SPEAKER_01]: Appreciate it.
- 53:26[SPEAKER_01]: Look forward to seeing you here in the not too distant future.
- 53:29[SPEAKER_00]: I hope so.
- 53:30[SPEAKER_00]: All right, be well.
- 53:31[SPEAKER_01]: All right, buddy.
- 53:31[SPEAKER_01]: Thanks.
- 53:32[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 53:32[SPEAKER_00]: Bye bye.
- 53:33[SPEAKER_00]: Bye bye.
