- 1:21Speaker 1: Thank you, buddy.
- 1:22Speaker 3: JK.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Simmons a great guy. Visit MLB network a few months ago.
- 1:25Speaker 1: I had his number of text and I missed him
- 1:26Speaker 1: that day, but I was like, hey, man, I would
- 1:27Speaker 1: love it if you could do a blurb for the book.
- 1:29Speaker 1: He's like, yeah, of course, send it to me right now.
- 1:30Speaker 1: He sent me as the email. He's like this okay.
- 1:32Speaker 1: I'm like, yeah, whatever you want. And he has been
- 1:34Speaker 1: unbelievable supporter. I actually texted him the other Day's a
- 1:36Speaker 1: Hugese Tigers fans, so he's he is locked inner Detroit
- 1:39Speaker 1: Tiger's right now leading the central. I can't thank him enough.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Miles Teller fella Eagles fan, so I texted him after
- 1:43Speaker 1: the Eagles game. He was like yeah, happy to help.
- 1:45Speaker 1: And Josh Tamel a gigantic Vikings guy. He was probably
- 1:48Speaker 1: the nicest one. I was at Humdingers with my kids,
- 1:50Speaker 1: which is a bowling alley, and a litter of the
- 1:51Speaker 1: phone call comes in Josh Toamel, I have to leave
- 1:53Speaker 1: my children, like got an actual movie star is calling
- 1:55Speaker 1: me JD. What's up. He's like, hey man, he goes, sorry,
- 1:57Speaker 1: I meant to say the blower. He's like, what do
- 1:58Speaker 1: you need from me? He's He's like, it's a sports
- 2:00Speaker 1: book movie Bay in the movie book. He's like, remember
- 2:01Speaker 1: my interview. He's like, Okay, I'm going to send you
- 2:03Speaker 1: a couple options. You tell me what works for you. Like,
- 2:05Speaker 1: these guys are so nice, so I can't think specifically.
- 2:08Speaker 5: J K.
- 2:08Speaker 1: Simmons. Josh Ta Melbo was John rt is a great guys?
- 2:11Speaker 1: Well t is from Carly? Is why I love John?
- 2:13Speaker 3: Go ahead? Question?
- 2:14Speaker 4: Uh if any of them want need actresses as well? Yeah,
- 2:19Speaker 4: my wife is ready to work auditioned self tape.
- 2:23Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:23Speaker 4: So you know all these big budding starts, let's produce something.
- 2:26Speaker 3: Let's get something out there. JK. Simmons.
- 2:28Speaker 1: If you're interested in Jillian Miller, let's get this going.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Tal what do you think it's so far? De Niro
- 2:32Speaker 1: k Comedy, Let's go.
- 2:36Speaker 3: I loved that. I told you before. I love that.
- 2:38Speaker 6: You asked de Niro about King of Comedy, which is
- 2:41Speaker 6: such an underrated film for Scorsese and de Niro, and
- 2:45Speaker 6: I thought it was so cool. Like I again, I
- 2:47Speaker 6: wasn't sure exactly what the book was. I thought maybe
- 2:49Speaker 6: it would just be transcripts of your interviews from the
- 2:51Speaker 6: Cinophile podcast. But you walk us through the whole like
- 2:56Speaker 6: step by step of getting of prepping to interview de Niro,
- 2:59Speaker 6: which I'd be freaking out if I was interviewing him
- 3:02Speaker 6: one on one.
- 3:02Speaker 2: I know what a huge.
- 3:04Speaker 6: Fan of his you are, And so just like the
- 3:07Speaker 6: whole process of like mentally prepping to sit with him,
- 3:11Speaker 6: and the whole step by step of his response and
- 3:15Speaker 6: your thoughts and going through your mind when you see
- 3:17Speaker 6: him walk into the room and all that.
- 3:19Speaker 2: That was pretty cool. That was a great place to start.
- 3:21Speaker 6: And just all the little stories and anecdotes involving you know,
- 3:25Speaker 6: really many of the greatest actors of our time.
- 3:27Speaker 2: It's pretty cool. I'm I'm looking forward to getting into
- 3:30Speaker 2: it a lot more.
- 3:31Speaker 1: Good sales so the book boys appreciate it. So up
- 3:32Speaker 1: on once again, wherever you get your book sold, We'll
- 3:34Speaker 1: talk here of comedy another time. I just love the
- 3:36Speaker 1: fact that I mean that Secene where Jerry Lewis and Danio
- 3:39Speaker 1: said that was based on true experience that you know,
- 3:41Speaker 1: Jerry Lewis's on the phone. This one was like called
- 3:43Speaker 1: my kekeonograph is a just one second and then he
- 3:45Speaker 1: has to leave and she's like, I hope you get cancer.
- 3:47Speaker 1: I hope you just turned to them like a dime.
- 3:49Speaker 1: And I was like, yeah, that's a true story. Jerry
- 3:51Speaker 1: told us this story. Marty's like, that's getting in the movie.
- 3:52Speaker 1: That is what people are like, crazed fans. I love
- 3:54Speaker 1: you and then they hate you. All right, let's get
- 3:56Speaker 1: to hockey. Carell Capriso. Last week we discussed at length
- 3:59Speaker 1: JD the ongoing Connor McDavid contract saga. This week it's
- 4:02Speaker 1: Carill the thrill do for a stack. Frank starvled reporting
- 4:06Speaker 1: he turned down eight years, one hundred and twenty eight
- 4:08Speaker 1: million dollar contract extension. The average AAV would have been
- 4:12Speaker 1: the highest in the league. It's sixteen million dollars. You
- 4:14Speaker 1: had mentioned last week. I said, tell hey, if McDavid
- 4:17Speaker 1: drags us out, obviously there's other guys in play, Capristoff
- 4:20Speaker 1: one of them. Where do we go from here when
- 4:21Speaker 1: a guy turns down sixteen million dollars this season?
- 4:24Speaker 4: Well breaking news. I heard from an inside source that
- 4:29Speaker 4: that is completely fabricated or not true.
- 4:32Speaker 3: Wow, yeah, so good.
- 4:35Speaker 4: I had I asked a couple of people I know
- 4:38Speaker 4: around and I said, that can't. I'm like, there's no
- 4:40Speaker 4: possible way that Carell would turn that down unless he truly,
- 4:45Speaker 4: if he honestly turned that down, he'd be traded like now,
- 4:50Speaker 4: because a team would have called. They would have had
- 4:53Speaker 4: to get rid of him, because I don't know how
- 4:55Speaker 4: much higher the Minnesota Wild can go, and I if
- 4:59Speaker 4: that is the case. But I just heard that somebody
- 5:02Speaker 4: kind of leaked that out and whether that's a little
- 5:04Speaker 4: but a gamesmanship to kind of ruffle his feathers, or
- 5:07Speaker 4: if it's just somebody that was kind of speaking out
- 5:11Speaker 4: of their ass, but yeah, I've heard from from people
- 5:14Speaker 4: within his camp that it's it's something that he had
- 5:18Speaker 4: no idea that was even something that popped up. So
- 5:21Speaker 4: Billy Garrion came out as well and kind of mentioned it,
- 5:25Speaker 4: and I do believe him. I think that either there
- 5:28Speaker 4: was a leak that happened or somebody misquoted somebody, so
- 5:31Speaker 4: because I just can't, you know, I do expect that
- 5:35Speaker 4: Connor's waiting for these other big names to fall, specifically
- 5:38Speaker 4: Capri so Sof and ikeel I don't see Connor, and
- 5:41Speaker 4: I I don't know why Connor would sign before these guys,
- 5:44Speaker 4: because he is the man, and he is the guy
- 5:47Speaker 4: that is going to set the tone whatever they signed.
- 5:50Speaker 4: So I think it's like a holding pattern, and I
- 5:52Speaker 4: think whenever Carel decides to sign, Connor will sign after.
- 5:56Speaker 4: But but I can't believe for a second, and I
- 5:59Speaker 4: truly don't want to believe that he would turn that
- 6:00Speaker 4: down unless he vehemently hated Minnesota and the city and
- 6:06Speaker 4: the cold weather.
- 6:07Speaker 3: But I don't know.
- 6:08Speaker 4: He's Russian, right, so I mean he understands the winner.
- 6:12Speaker 4: It doesn't bother him that much.
- 6:13Speaker 1: Let's say you're playing in Russia. You know the Russian
- 6:15Speaker 1: mindset a little bit more than most. As you said,
- 6:16Speaker 1: those numbers were eye bopping to me, I'm like, if
- 6:18Speaker 1: that's not good enough to get it done, what more
- 6:20Speaker 1: exactly do you want? So that's interesting, as you said that,
- 6:22Speaker 1: you have a whole lot of rubles, exactly a lot
- 6:26Speaker 1: of borst. Meantime, after just thirty two games, J T.
- 6:29Speaker 1: Miller's second go around with the Rangers already pretty eventful,
- 6:31Speaker 1: the Rangers naming him the twenty ninth captain in franchise history.
- 6:35Speaker 1: The team hasn't had a captain since Jacob Trouper was
- 6:37Speaker 1: traded last year. He was drafted by New York and
- 6:39Speaker 1: twenty eleven, making stops in Tampa and Vancouver, traded back
- 6:42Speaker 1: to the Rangers in January. Truba and Crowder now both
- 6:44Speaker 1: in Anaheim's the three two year olds a captain. My
- 6:46Speaker 1: question to you is, we all are well aware of
- 6:49Speaker 1: the controversy Difficulty had with Eleias Petterson. So when I
- 6:53Speaker 1: think of captains, JT. Miller is exactly the first guy
- 6:55Speaker 1: think of as far as a level headed, harmonious force.
- 6:58Speaker 1: Tell me why, though you think it makes sense he's
- 7:00Speaker 1: the captain of this team.
- 7:01Speaker 4: Yeah, he's a bit of a he's a bit of
- 7:04Speaker 4: a loose cannon there so, but I do think they
- 7:07Speaker 4: need some fire. You know, I think they're top guys.
- 7:12Speaker 4: It's a lot of good players, but it's a lot
- 7:13Speaker 4: of guys that you know, Elias Petterson esque, you know,
- 7:17Speaker 4: I mean, Mika's advantage ad and and you know, I
- 7:19Speaker 4: know my other pick would have been Vincent Trocheck, So
- 7:23Speaker 4: I wasn't.
- 7:23Speaker 3: I was.
- 7:24Speaker 4: It was probably a toss up between him or JT. Miller,
- 7:27Speaker 4: And I do believe that.
- 7:29Speaker 3: I like J. T.
- 7:30Speaker 4: Miller as the pick. I think they're really trying to
- 7:31Speaker 4: change their identity and they're gonna have somebody that really
- 7:34Speaker 4: kind of drags him into the fight. And you know,
- 7:36Speaker 4: as much as Vincent Trocheck is a gamer, and you know,
- 7:39Speaker 4: I think there's just another level of edge that JT.
- 7:42Speaker 4: Miller has that that Trocheck doesn't. So I like it.
- 7:46Speaker 4: Those are my two picks. I don't think he could
- 7:49Speaker 4: have gave it to anybody else. You know, I know
- 7:51Speaker 4: there was talks about maybe Shisterkin, but I don't love
- 7:53Speaker 4: the whole goalie play especially, you know, I just don't
- 7:56Speaker 4: think it works.
- 7:57Speaker 3: So J T.
- 7:57Speaker 4: Miller, I think it's he's going to have to emulate
- 8:00Speaker 4: in kind of. I mean, he's gonna echo with that
- 8:04Speaker 4: coach staff wants. They're gonna be hard nosed with some skills,
- 8:08Speaker 4: so and they're really going to have to lean on him.
- 8:10Speaker 4: But you know, I'm not sure what this team's gonna
- 8:12Speaker 4: look like this year. You know, they have some players,
- 8:14Speaker 4: but you know, I expect them to kind of be
- 8:16Speaker 4: scratching and klawing unless you know, this new coaching staff
- 8:21Speaker 4: Sullivan puts puts really something in place. That allows them
- 8:24Speaker 4: to excel and kind of you know, it really highlights
- 8:28Speaker 4: all of their best attributes.
- 8:30Speaker 3: So it's up in the air for Rangers. But I
- 8:33Speaker 3: like this pick. I'm on it. I like it. Good
- 8:35Speaker 3: job JTM Miller the workhorse.
- 8:37Speaker 1: Yeah, I just said a little bit of fire and brimstone.
- 8:39Speaker 1: Sometimes it's not bad. If a guy's gonna kick in
- 8:41Speaker 1: the ass, you don't think it. Me and you exactly,
- 8:43Speaker 1: You'll be on me. If I was here early, you
- 8:45Speaker 1: can ask tal I was ready to go today. Tom
- 8:46Speaker 1: McFarlane was locked in. Meantime, Mark Andrey Flurry continues to
- 8:49Speaker 1: extend the farewelter, What is this going on here? Broken Flowers?
- 8:53Speaker 1: The forty year old goaltending legend remaining retired, but he
- 8:56Speaker 1: will suit up for the Penguins in a preseason game
- 8:58Speaker 1: September twenty seventh. How about that for a homecoming for Flower?
- 9:01Speaker 1: When three cups the Penguins, was drafted first overall by
- 9:04Speaker 1: the team in two thousand and three. I've had more
- 9:06Speaker 1: than a few people text me I understand. I thought
- 9:08Speaker 1: he was retired. IM like, he is retired, He's just
- 9:09Speaker 1: gonna play. When he came here for the peng which
- 9:10Speaker 1: is an honorary thing. What do you make with you?
- 9:12Speaker 1: Are you cool this?
- 9:13Speaker 4: Do you think it's a little odd? I mean, whatever
- 9:16Speaker 4: he wants at this point. And if you know you
- 9:19Speaker 4: have a willing participant in a team that wants to
- 9:24Speaker 4: kind of allow you to have this spotlight in this moment,
- 9:27Speaker 4: I mean, more power to you.
- 9:28Speaker 3: I'm kind of like, hey, more of the school.
- 9:31Speaker 4: If you just recede into the darkness and you take
- 9:33Speaker 4: your retirement and you take your walking papers and you get.
- 9:36Speaker 3: The fuck out of there.
- 9:38Speaker 4: But he is such an iconic figure there and I
- 9:41Speaker 4: think it means a lot to him to kind of
- 9:43Speaker 4: finish there. You know, part of me would have liked
- 9:46Speaker 4: because I did love the San Jose Sharks so much
- 9:49Speaker 4: and you know, to have potentially retired as a San
- 9:52Speaker 4: Jose Shark and I know some guys really like that,
- 9:54Speaker 4: So you know, I agree with that. It's a cool
- 9:55Speaker 4: thing to have and a cool moment to have for
- 9:58Speaker 4: your family. I mean, how his groins are gonna feel,
- 10:02Speaker 4: and if he's been skating, I have no idea.
- 10:04Speaker 3: Yeah, in this.
- 10:05Speaker 4: Preseason game, you'd hate to see him go in there
- 10:07Speaker 4: and like just tear is growing off the bone and
- 10:09Speaker 4: then he yeah, and then he's on LTI R and
- 10:11Speaker 4: he's got to stay on the team the whole year.
- 10:13Speaker 4: That'd be fantastic. And then he plays in the playoffs
- 10:16Speaker 4: and they wouldn't cup.
- 10:17Speaker 3: Wow.
- 10:18Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 10:18Speaker 1: Whenever it's a non competitive game, it's always a bit
- 10:21Speaker 1: of a challenge. It reminds me my favorite tennis player
- 10:23Speaker 1: on my favorite athlete. It's a great Roger Federer. When
- 10:25Speaker 1: things were winding down for fed you know, his last
- 10:27Speaker 1: appearance was, I mean his last one with that unfortunate
- 10:29Speaker 1: was terribly you know, six love six love got drilled
- 10:32Speaker 1: in the quarters. But he wanted to go out on
- 10:33Speaker 1: his own terms. So his last appearance actually was in
- 10:36Speaker 1: the Rod Labor Classic. Now Labor is a legend of
- 10:38Speaker 1: the game, but it was like an exhibition term in England.
- 10:40Speaker 1: And your point, Federer was forty years old at this point.
- 10:43Speaker 1: He was just like, I just hope I don't hurt myself.
- 10:44Speaker 1: I just I just do want to embarrass myself. I
- 10:46Speaker 1: want to have one last time on the court to
- 10:48Speaker 1: say goodbye. And of course Rafa was his greatest robble.
- 10:50Speaker 1: It was very cool him and Nadal were playing doubles together.
- 10:53Speaker 1: It was a very odd way to say goodbye to
- 10:54Speaker 1: Roger Federer at this random Rod Labor Class exhibition tournament.
- 10:57Speaker 1: But to your point, hey, man, if a guy gets
- 10:59Speaker 1: to go out on his own terms rather than hey,
- 11:01Speaker 1: my last competitive appearance, I got blitzed. Thought, I'm all
- 11:03Speaker 1: for it some with you on fly where it's like
- 11:04Speaker 1: he plays five minutes, he makes two saves, he gets
- 11:06Speaker 1: to where the Penguins jersey again, stick taps all good.
- 11:09Speaker 1: I get it.
- 11:10Speaker 4: Yeah, you you know, it's so hard and there's so
- 11:13Speaker 4: many of us in sports that you don't get to
- 11:16Speaker 4: write your own ending. And having the ability to do so,
- 11:18Speaker 4: I think it's a really big privilege and an honor
- 11:21Speaker 4: to take, and I think you just take it in
- 11:22Speaker 4: you run with it. If they're willing to give it
- 11:23Speaker 4: to you, I'm like, sure, do it. And I'm sure
- 11:26Speaker 4: he'd be fine either way. But I'm sure they approached
- 11:28Speaker 4: him and said, do you want to end it this way?
- 11:31Speaker 4: And he probably had a fun idea to do this.
- 11:33Speaker 4: I'm sure he's gonna have a lot of fun out there.
- 11:36Speaker 4: But yeah, it's just interesting. If I'm a goalie trying
- 11:39Speaker 4: to make that team, I'm like the fuck.
- 11:40Speaker 3: Man, every game, every a tire else the old bastard.
- 11:45Speaker 3: Just hang them up. Let the kids play.
- 11:47Speaker 1: Speak and let the kids playing goalies. The Blackhawks locked
- 11:50Speaker 1: up one of their core pieces and they're rebuild. Goaltender
- 11:52Speaker 1: Spencer Night three years, seventeen point five million dollars. Twenty
- 11:55Speaker 1: four year old drafted by the Panthers in the first
- 11:57Speaker 1: roun of twenty nineteen, was traded to Chicago last season
- 12:00Speaker 1: along with the first round pick and the Seth Jones
- 12:02Speaker 1: deadline deal. We know the black in for their tough season, JD.
- 12:05Speaker 1: There's no question about it. But where do you have
- 12:07Speaker 1: Night as far as being a piece of the movie
- 12:09Speaker 1: for I mean five million dollars a year for this guy.
- 12:12Speaker 3: We're still talking about the Blackhawks.
- 12:15Speaker 1: We could keep it brief.
- 12:16Speaker 4: If I think we've talked about the I think we've
- 12:18Speaker 4: talked about the Black Frank Daser, the Naser laser. Yeah,
- 12:25Speaker 4: they're gonna stink this year again, hopefully they're a little
- 12:27Speaker 4: bit better. I mean, Spencer Knight is a goalie that
- 12:31Speaker 4: you know, there's a lot of promise and uh, there
- 12:34Speaker 4: is a lot of high hopes for him, So hopefully
- 12:37Speaker 4: he can. You know, he voiced it last year that
- 12:39Speaker 4: he it's nice to be in a place that wants him,
- 12:41Speaker 4: and Chicago you know, they they they spoke, they paid him.
- 12:46Speaker 3: Now it's going to be up to him.
- 12:47Speaker 4: A twenty four year old goalie that has that size
- 12:49Speaker 4: and that capability to be athletic.
- 12:51Speaker 3: I mean, could be a big piece moving forward. He's
- 12:53Speaker 3: got to figure out his.
- 12:54Speaker 4: Kind of up and down and consistency issues, but yeah,
- 12:58Speaker 4: it's a big piece if he finds his game. I mean,
- 13:00Speaker 4: do I think they're gonna Absolutely. I just don't know
- 13:02Speaker 4: how you find your game when you're giving up fifty
- 13:05Speaker 4: great a scoring chances a game. So we'll see if
- 13:08Speaker 4: they can play some better defense and help them out
- 13:10Speaker 4: a little bit. So, but yeah, I think Chicago will
- 13:13Speaker 4: not have a great season this year. But you know
- 13:15Speaker 4: they're making some important signings.
- 13:18Speaker 1: Yeah, good compensation for guy who's about to face a
- 13:20Speaker 1: whole ton of rubber. And one more thought before we
- 13:22Speaker 1: get to our special guest topic, Farwell, And it may
- 13:24Speaker 1: have only been the first rookie showcase of the preseason,
- 13:26Speaker 1: but fans of the Bell cent are absolutely buzzing. Saturday night,
- 13:29Speaker 1: I've been Demoedov taking the ice for the Habs against
- 13:32Speaker 1: the Winnipeg Jacks, prospects a Demodov a goal into assist, highlight,
- 13:35Speaker 1: real time goal late in the game. Montreal pulled him
- 13:38Speaker 1: from the lineup the next night. But seriously, JD, everyone's
- 13:41Speaker 1: so excited after the promise that Montreal made last season,
- 13:43Speaker 1: now to have this guy for a full season. You
- 13:45Speaker 1: know what it's like in Lebel provals, how excited everyone is.
- 13:48Speaker 5: Oh?
- 13:48Speaker 4: Just I mean, is there a better place to watch play,
- 13:52Speaker 4: you know, a hockey game and be part of an
- 13:55Speaker 4: organization twenty thousand for a fucking showcase game of kids
- 13:58Speaker 4: making mistakes and turnovers.
- 14:00Speaker 3: But to die Demodov's.
- 14:02Speaker 4: Point, and to his credit, you know, as a young
- 14:05Speaker 4: kid who you know he played in the playoffs, a
- 14:07Speaker 4: lot of those guys can rest on their laurels and
- 14:09Speaker 4: be like I don't need to be here, Like I'm
- 14:10Speaker 4: better than this. He goes out and puts on a
- 14:13Speaker 4: show enough so where they pull him out of the
- 14:15Speaker 4: next game. That's a good credit to him and a
- 14:17Speaker 4: good credit to the organization by being like, listen, you
- 14:20Speaker 4: didn't come in here, cocky, You didn't come in here.
- 14:23Speaker 4: You came in here, you worked hard, you played, you dominated,
- 14:26Speaker 4: you prove that you're deserved to be here. You only
- 14:29Speaker 4: get one game, that's fine, And I like that that's
- 14:32Speaker 4: a good that's a good show of faith by the
- 14:34Speaker 4: organization and also a good show of faith by Demenoff
- 14:36Speaker 4: that like he wants to work. And I think this
- 14:39Speaker 4: kid's different and I think he he really wants to
- 14:42Speaker 4: be there and he's gonna will himself onto this roster
- 14:44Speaker 4: and be a really a focal point of this offense.
- 14:47Speaker 4: So you know, if I'm this Montreal Montreal Canadians organization,
- 14:52Speaker 4: I'm really happy about that. And you know, I think
- 14:55Speaker 4: oftentimes you see these organizations like kind of grind the
- 14:58Speaker 4: young kids even though they earned it. It's like, hey, listen,
- 15:02Speaker 4: you earned it. We gave you a little bit of rope.
- 15:04Speaker 4: You didn't hang yourself. You worked hard, you worked your
- 15:06Speaker 4: ass off, you had a great game. Okay, no need
- 15:09Speaker 4: to play. We'll see a training camp. And I think
- 15:10Speaker 4: that's a good show of good faith by both sides.
- 15:13Speaker 1: Tell also Mnchrell, guy, you'll be back home in ten days.
- 15:15Speaker 1: So he'll be buzzing with all the demodop fever. Right.
- 15:18Speaker 2: The Demi God, the Demi God is ready to go.
- 15:22Speaker 3: He's ready to go.
- 15:24Speaker 6: You know, it's it's been fun to see what he's
- 15:26Speaker 6: been doing already. He spent the whole summer in Montreal,
- 15:29Speaker 6: which the local media absolutely love that he's basically been
- 15:32Speaker 6: training in the city all summer, and yeah, just you know,
- 15:35Speaker 6: it's been interesting because the discussion has been about nice.
- 15:39Speaker 6: The whole discussion has been about who's gonna be a
- 15:41Speaker 6: center because they're not very deep at center. And to
- 15:44Speaker 6: their credit that this coaching staff in the front of
- 15:47Speaker 6: office that both kind of made the point that this
- 15:48Speaker 6: guy has the potential to kind of be like a
- 15:51Speaker 6: Caprice off and that he can drive a line from
- 15:54Speaker 6: the wing. He doesn't need to drive the line necessarily
- 15:57Speaker 6: from center.
- 15:57Speaker 3: So, yeah, it's gonna be fun.
- 15:59Speaker 2: I'm looking forward to it. It's gonna be a lot
- 16:00Speaker 2: of offense.
- 16:01Speaker 3: Offense goes through him.
- 16:02Speaker 4: I know Kapen and is also a lot of people
- 16:04Speaker 4: who have been talking about him, And if Kirby Duck
- 16:07Speaker 4: can stay healthy, that's definitely an option. So you know,
- 16:10Speaker 4: they're gonna have to find a center for him, have
- 16:12Speaker 4: a couple of trade pieces. Some young kids, do they
- 16:15Speaker 4: really make a splash at the deadline they think they might,
- 16:18Speaker 4: But yeah, he is the possibility to be the Koucherov
- 16:22Speaker 4: Caprice sof not. I don't think he's to that ilk
- 16:25Speaker 4: and that skill set, but he has the ability to
- 16:27Speaker 4: drive a line for sure.
- 16:29Speaker 1: I'd be amazing to think, well the kind of promise
- 16:30Speaker 1: potentially has for this Montreal Canadians team. Again, we'll talk
- 16:33Speaker 1: more hockey in the days and weeks ahead, but coming
- 16:36Speaker 1: up next Todd McFarlane, the creator of Spawn, co creator
- 16:38Speaker 1: of Venom. He'll tell us but John Leguizamo's fat suit
- 16:41Speaker 1: and Spawn, why speed kills in baseball? And I his
- 16:44Speaker 1: daughter Joe Gary Bebben absolutely crazing a tete a tet
- 16:47Speaker 1: that's coming up next after this on NHL un Scripted.
- 17:01Speaker 1: Our next guest is a legendary artist, writer, comic book creator,
- 17:05Speaker 1: an entrepreneur. He gained plenty of attention when he began
- 17:07Speaker 1: working as an artist on The Amazing Spider Man, but
- 17:10Speaker 1: is perhaps best known as the creator of the historic
- 17:12Speaker 1: Spawn series. He's also along with a passionate sports fan
- 17:15Speaker 1: and memorabilia collector who also's co owner of the Edmonton Oilers.
- 17:19Speaker 1: A big thrill to welcome in, Todd McFarland. Todd, great
- 17:21Speaker 1: to see you, Thanks for doing.
- 17:22Speaker 5: This good thanks for having me, I can I throw
- 17:26Speaker 5: in a little bit, usually the easy ice breakers. I
- 17:28Speaker 5: also co created Venom, the Spider Man's character show. Usually
- 17:33Speaker 5: people I go, oh, I went to that movie.
- 17:36Speaker 1: Absolutely, I read that comic book. Yeah, exactly. My kids
- 17:40Speaker 1: are huge fans of Venom. We want to get into
- 17:42Speaker 1: all the comics and all that. But I want to
- 17:44Speaker 1: ask you, first time out of the gate, which passion
- 17:46Speaker 1: came first for I know you played college baseball, but
- 17:48Speaker 1: what was a bigger passion for you? Comics or sports?
- 17:53Speaker 5: Sports. I kind of broke into comic books pretty late,
- 17:58Speaker 5: started collecting late. But I have a brother year younger brother,
- 18:03Speaker 5: you're old, and so we were constantly if you guys
- 18:06Speaker 5: got siblings, you know how that goes, right, Everything everything
- 18:09Speaker 5: is a game. So uh yeah, by the time I
- 18:12Speaker 5: started collecting comic books, my competitive nature was well honed,
- 18:18Speaker 5: was well honed.
- 18:19Speaker 4: And you know, for you, what was the sport growing up?
- 18:21Speaker 4: And and I know you had a little call a
- 18:23Speaker 4: little for right into college baseball, So talk about just
- 18:25Speaker 4: your your sport career. And and you know when you
- 18:28Speaker 4: really decided to kind of fully shift.
- 18:34Speaker 5: That's when when the scouts and everybody else said you're
- 18:36Speaker 5: not good enough. We all have the dream. I still
- 18:41Speaker 5: maybe until a couple of years ago, still go, man,
- 18:45Speaker 5: I have a chance. I still play. As matter of fact,
- 18:48Speaker 5: I had two for two with a single double four
- 18:51Speaker 5: RBIs the other day with the thirty beautiful I played
- 18:55Speaker 5: against the thirty year old. So anyways, I went to Yeah,
- 19:01Speaker 5: I mean, I grew up in California, so by the
- 19:03Speaker 5: time we get I'm Canadian. And by the time I
- 19:05Speaker 5: went back to Canada, it was sort of too late
- 19:08Speaker 5: because you know, by the time I moved back there
- 19:10Speaker 5: at fourteen, they said, hey, you can play hockey. You're fourteen,
- 19:16Speaker 5: which means at best you're going to be able to
- 19:17Speaker 5: grab and carry the hockey bag. Right maybe at best
- 19:21Speaker 5: you can be the equipment kid because all the other
- 19:23Speaker 5: kids have been playing for ten years. Or since you're
- 19:26Speaker 5: coming from a summer place, you could be one of
- 19:28Speaker 5: the best baseball, basketball, football players we have. Right when
- 19:31Speaker 5: you're fourteen. Those are easy choices, right, like, oh, I
- 19:34Speaker 5: want to be a dufist or I want to be
- 19:37Speaker 5: a star. So I stuck to those sports, played all
- 19:41Speaker 5: of them, minus hockey, obviously, much to the chagrin of
- 19:45Speaker 5: my dad, who played all the way up till he
- 19:47Speaker 5: was eighty one, and I went down when I I mean,
- 19:52Speaker 5: they don't have organized baseball in high school in Canada,
- 19:56Speaker 5: so to play, you know, you played in some of
- 19:59Speaker 5: the leagues, but if you wanted to go anywhere post
- 20:02Speaker 5: high school, you have to go the border. I did.
- 20:06Speaker 5: Went to a small school outside of Spokane, Washington. They
- 20:11Speaker 5: had just the year before amalgamate it with the Pac ten,
- 20:15Speaker 5: so it was it was the Pac ten. My first
- 20:18Speaker 5: year I went to JC, couldn't crack the lineup. I
- 20:22Speaker 5: was a center fielder. The coach, from my perspective, had
- 20:28Speaker 5: given a scholarship to the center fielder ahead of me.
- 20:30Speaker 5: I thought I was better, but I was never going
- 20:32Speaker 5: to get on the field because he was never gonna
- 20:35Speaker 5: benches his scholarship kid. So it just drove me more
- 20:41Speaker 5: to just go every day. I'm going to show him
- 20:43Speaker 5: I'm the better of the two.
- 20:44Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 20:45Speaker 5: And then at summertime they send everybody to sort of
- 20:52Speaker 5: travel teams, and so we went to one up in Canada.
- 20:56Speaker 5: I was the token Canadian. Everybody else was from an
- 20:59Speaker 5: American school. And somebody from one of the Pack ten
- 21:05Speaker 5: school saw me and said, hey, you know, did a
- 21:07Speaker 5: trial and they said, we'll give you a three year scholarship.
- 21:09Speaker 5: And so I played my three years at Eastern Washington
- 21:14Speaker 5: UH out playing, playing center field out out there. So
- 21:18Speaker 5: again it's it's these ones that you guys all know, right,
- 21:22Speaker 5: the longer you play sports, the more you're gonna come
- 21:24Speaker 5: up with good batter and different coaches. You just got
- 21:26Speaker 5: to plow through them, right, And so couldn't couldn't play
- 21:30Speaker 5: JC junior college, but I could start Pac ten, right,
- 21:34Speaker 5: So it's a weird it's a weird one. But I honestly, gentlemen,
- 21:38Speaker 5: I had one skill had I had maybe maybe two,
- 21:41Speaker 5: but one of them was I was left handed, an
- 21:44Speaker 5: advantage and I could run like the win and you
- 21:47Speaker 5: know that you can't teach speed, so that allowed me
- 21:51Speaker 5: to accomplish a lot of things. But the hitting was okay,
- 21:55Speaker 5: the power was okay. The arm borderline puss arm, right,
- 22:00Speaker 5: So we're but but but and I went to tryouts
- 22:04Speaker 5: and they would always, like before games, the scouts would
- 22:07Speaker 5: come and they get you to run like sixty yard
- 22:10Speaker 5: dashes forty yard dashes, right, and they would get me
- 22:12Speaker 5: to run it over and over because they couldn't believe
- 22:14Speaker 5: their thumb, right, they're like, no, I must have pushed
- 22:17Speaker 5: it too soon, right, And then they would say, hey,
- 22:20Speaker 5: what is your like after a third time, what is
- 22:22Speaker 5: your running speed? And I tell them and they would
- 22:25Speaker 5: That was the only thing that kept me around because
- 22:26Speaker 5: a couple of the scouts said that, they go, Kid,
- 22:30Speaker 5: the fastest guy in the majors at that point was
- 22:31Speaker 5: a guy named Willy Wilson, and they go, Willy Wilson
- 22:35Speaker 5: doesn't run what you run right now, right, So so
- 22:39Speaker 5: that kind of kept me around the game. And then
- 22:42Speaker 5: after my senior year, I went for a tryout with
- 22:44Speaker 5: the Medicine Hat Blue Jays, an affiliate with the Blue Jays,
- 22:49Speaker 5: and I got to tell you, gentlemen, I played way
- 22:52Speaker 5: over my head that day, right, Like you know when
- 22:55Speaker 5: you're you know, when you're playing better than your skill set, right,
- 22:59Speaker 5: And the arm was on fire and I was running
- 23:02Speaker 5: and I was hitting and I was hitting for power,
- 23:05Speaker 5: and I just go, oh man. And they called me
- 23:07Speaker 5: into the office and they go, hey, we've got an
- 23:10Speaker 5: opening and your Canadian which is even better. Yeah. Yeah,
- 23:16Speaker 5: so we you know, you could be a bit of
- 23:18Speaker 5: a draw because we just had one of our high
- 23:22Speaker 5: draft picks turn us down. They don't want the money.
- 23:24Speaker 5: So we offered him like eighty grand and back then
- 23:27Speaker 5: that was a lot, and and him and his dad
- 23:29Speaker 5: don't want it. They were out of high school so
- 23:31Speaker 5: that they could get more going back to college. And
- 23:34Speaker 5: so they said, we're going to make a call back
- 23:35Speaker 5: to Toronto, come back in the morning. And I went, oh, man,
- 23:39Speaker 5: who knows, I might I might be able to baffle
- 23:41Speaker 5: them here with one good day. So I went, I
- 23:45Speaker 5: went back to the hotel. My dad brought me back
- 23:49Speaker 5: the next day, and I could see on the look
- 23:51Speaker 5: on their face, and they just went bad news. The
- 23:54Speaker 5: kid from Philadelphia and his dad decided eighty grand was okay. Right.
- 23:58Speaker 5: So I've said before, you never want to be the
- 24:01Speaker 5: twenty sixth man on a twenty five man broster.
- 24:05Speaker 3: So that was true.
- 24:06Speaker 5: And I thought, at that point, gentlemen, my ideal world
- 24:10Speaker 5: would be I played minor league baseball at night, and
- 24:13Speaker 5: then then I honed my drawing abilities during the day,
- 24:17Speaker 5: knowing that being a pro forever was going to be
- 24:20Speaker 5: short lived. But given that I didn't get the first part,
- 24:24Speaker 5: which was getting to play minor ball, I just go,
- 24:26Speaker 5: I guess I'll turn all my attention to trying to
- 24:29Speaker 5: get break into comic books.
- 24:31Speaker 1: So well, it certainly it worked out well. Speaking of
- 24:34Speaker 1: the comic books, Spawn is such an incredible creation, so
- 24:37Speaker 1: wild the original and so vivid. And I remember the movie.
- 24:41Speaker 1: I mean John Leguizamo's clown when it imitates Jimmy Stewart,
- 24:44Speaker 1: he says, every time someone farts, a demon gets his wings,
- 24:46Speaker 1: and then he farts twice, he goes oops twins like
- 24:49Speaker 1: my wife and my sister let to this day, we're
- 24:50Speaker 1: always howling about that. Talk to me about leg Gamo
- 24:53Speaker 1: and Clown and that entire creation.
- 24:55Speaker 5: So yeah, it's interesting because there's there you could argue
- 24:59Speaker 5: there's two main characters. There was Clown and then there
- 25:01Speaker 5: was Spawn, right, and Spawn was played by an actor,
- 25:07Speaker 5: Michael Ji White, and Michael Ji White was built like
- 25:10Speaker 5: a Greek god, right. I mean, he was really into
- 25:14Speaker 5: health and he did everything whatever else. But he was
- 25:17Speaker 5: so health conscious that he didn't even like when they
- 25:21Speaker 5: put like makeup on him, and he had to put
- 25:24Speaker 5: in eye contacts and stuff, and it sort of bothered him.
- 25:29Speaker 5: And I understand because he would he goes. I worked
- 25:31Speaker 5: hard to get to this right here, John Legazamo, For
- 25:35Speaker 5: those of you that don't know, the actor is not
- 25:38Speaker 5: a very big man. He's very slight. He's not tall,
- 25:41Speaker 5: and he's not maybe he weighs a buck forty, right,
- 25:45Speaker 5: But they had to put him in the fat costume
- 25:47Speaker 5: every day, right, the big and I'm telling you, this
- 25:51Speaker 5: wasn't like what they do now. It was like this
- 25:53Speaker 5: big foam thing. And whenever he wasn't on set, they
- 25:56Speaker 5: had this little hole so they had to put a
- 25:58Speaker 5: tube in it so they could blow some kind of
- 26:00Speaker 5: air in there so they could cool him down. So
- 26:03Speaker 5: in between shots you just saw this big, bloated dude
- 26:07Speaker 5: in the costume trying to he couldn't even sit up
- 26:11Speaker 5: if the costume was so fat. And and and the
- 26:14Speaker 5: thing I remember is that not once did he ever
- 26:18Speaker 5: complain Wow.
- 26:20Speaker 3: Wow.
- 26:20Speaker 5: He just was like and I he was like, let's
- 26:23Speaker 5: just make the best of this. So uh and after
- 26:26Speaker 5: you stayed friends with John ever since, so he yeah,
- 26:30Speaker 5: he just he he took it, absorbed it and and said,
- 26:34Speaker 5: all right, this is the gig, painful as it can
- 26:37Speaker 5: be at times when you're in prosthetics. Uh. And he
- 26:40Speaker 5: and he rolled with it and had a good time
- 26:42Speaker 5: with him.
- 26:43Speaker 4: Well, it's just such a great character in such a
- 26:45Speaker 4: great world and and you know, speaking on that, building
- 26:48Speaker 4: worlds and characters that to me have stood the test
- 26:50Speaker 4: of time.
- 26:50Speaker 3: Like what does that mean to you?
- 26:52Speaker 4: You know, just being a kid like you said that
- 26:54Speaker 4: played minor league baseball and then and then dove into
- 26:59Speaker 4: attempted to play minor league baseball, like you said.
- 27:03Speaker 3: The way you talk about you're skilling her, I mean.
- 27:08Speaker 4: Tryout well there, but you know, like what do you know,
- 27:12Speaker 4: what does that mean you to like build these characters
- 27:14Speaker 4: like Spider n Spaond that just stand the test of
- 27:17Speaker 4: time and venom that you know for you, you know,
- 27:19Speaker 4: did you ever imagine and see yourself doing things like this?
- 27:22Speaker 5: Here's the thing, Jason, and I'm sure you guys have
- 27:25Speaker 5: done plenty of interviews yourself, and people do when you
- 27:28Speaker 5: do interviews, people want you to like analyze yourself. Right,
- 27:32Speaker 5: we don't do that and people don't do that in life.
- 27:35Speaker 5: What we all do is live our life and then
- 27:38Speaker 5: all of a sudden there's things that we've either done good,
- 27:42Speaker 5: bet or and different that are now part of our
- 27:44Speaker 5: resume because and I say that, Jason, because if I
- 27:48Speaker 5: knew what I was doing and I knew how to
- 27:51Speaker 5: do it, I'd have twenty characters that were famous right now,
- 27:55Speaker 5: so you you trip into good luck at times, and
- 28:01Speaker 5: part of it is and the hockey ven act where
- 28:05Speaker 5: that you're not going to get a goal if you
- 28:06Speaker 5: don't take the shots, right. So the more shots you take,
- 28:09Speaker 5: then people go, oh, man, you got ten goals. Yeah,
- 28:10Speaker 5: cause they took a hundred shots, right. So it's not
- 28:13Speaker 5: like I took ten shots. I took one hundred shots
- 28:16Speaker 5: and only ten percent went in. So both the characters,
- 28:20Speaker 5: I mean, Venom was literally a complete accident. In the
- 28:26Speaker 5: quick story on that is I was I was doing
- 28:31Speaker 5: the Incredible Hulk at Marvel, and I was quick enough
- 28:34Speaker 5: to be able to do two books. Right. Most people couldn't,
- 28:37Speaker 5: but I was getting faster and I could do two books.
- 28:39Speaker 5: I was looking for another book, and so everybody at
- 28:43Speaker 5: the Marvel office, all the editors said, yeah, we'll look
- 28:47Speaker 5: for work, but don't go into the Spider Man office.
- 28:49Speaker 5: You don't want to go in there. It's a mess.
- 28:50Speaker 5: Now if you know my personality, Shoot, that's the wrong
- 28:54Speaker 5: thing to say, right. So I I'd belized to go,
- 28:58Speaker 5: come on, what do these guys say I went in there?
- 29:00Speaker 5: But they were true. There was a bunch of They
- 29:03Speaker 5: had three books at that time, three Spider Man books,
- 29:06Speaker 5: three different ones, and the artists were rotating and at
- 29:12Speaker 5: the time somebody came up and they said, hey, Todd,
- 29:15Speaker 5: this is our sort of icon character right now. Spider Man.
- 29:19Speaker 5: Amazing Spider Man, which was the granddaddy of the books,
- 29:21Speaker 5: is number twenty one in our sales ranks. If you
- 29:25Speaker 5: want to come on board, knock yourself out, because we're
- 29:29Speaker 5: looking for help. So I go, oh, okay, there's an opportunity.
- 29:33Speaker 5: But he was wearing this black costume from if there's
- 29:36Speaker 5: any Geeks out there, from this big series that had
- 29:39Speaker 5: come out in an event series called Secret Wars, and
- 29:43Speaker 5: I went yeah, so they offered me this Spider Man book.
- 29:46Speaker 5: But being a stubborn guy. And this is where the
- 29:50Speaker 5: accidents don't replicate that often because most mid twenty people say, oh,
- 29:56Speaker 5: you can give me Spider Man, cool and out the door, right.
- 29:59Speaker 5: But I was like, I don't want to draw him.
- 30:02Speaker 5: He was in the black costume, Peter Parker, I want
- 30:04Speaker 5: to draw them too, black costume. If you don't get
- 30:06Speaker 5: the black costume off, then I'm not going to draw it, right.
- 30:09Speaker 5: And they were like, well, the people who created it,
- 30:11Speaker 5: and the current editor in chief and some of the executives.
- 30:14Speaker 5: They like it, and I go, well, this is easy.
- 30:18Speaker 5: We'll just take it off. I'll create a new character.
- 30:21Speaker 5: We'll put it on that character, and then I can
- 30:24Speaker 5: get Peter Parker in his red and blue classic uniform.
- 30:28Speaker 5: So the very next day I handed them the design
- 30:32Speaker 5: that became Venom. Right, I'm here here, this is what
- 30:35Speaker 5: this costume should look like. You look way narlier instead
- 30:38Speaker 5: of on a one hundred and seventy pounds Peter Parker
- 30:41Speaker 5: who cares? And that character ends up moving on And
- 30:46Speaker 5: then the writer comes in, Dave make a liney to
- 30:48Speaker 5: add sort of the background to it, says it was
- 30:51Speaker 5: Eddie Brock. Let me tell you. He told me it
- 30:53Speaker 5: was Eddie Brock after the fact because I drew Venom
- 30:57Speaker 5: as big and monstrous, because I thought he was an alien.
- 31:02Speaker 5: And then they approved it. They said, man, we like
- 31:05Speaker 5: the design. And then like about a week later, David says, oh,
- 31:09Speaker 5: here here's the first story, and it's a guy named
- 31:11Speaker 5: Eddie Brock, And I went, whoa, whoa, who Eddie Brock.
- 31:13Speaker 5: Isn't he human? Like what the information I could have
- 31:17Speaker 5: used earlier when I was trying to draw this guy,
- 31:20Speaker 5: but they had proved that and I sort of liked
- 31:22Speaker 5: the look, and I went, eh, if Bruce Banner, little
- 31:25Speaker 5: skinny Bruce Banner can turn into the Hull, why can't
- 31:28Speaker 5: Eddie Brock turn into sort of a big Venom? And
- 31:30Speaker 5: that was it. And so Venom literally exists for one
- 31:35Speaker 5: reason because I didn't want to draw up Peter Parker
- 31:37Speaker 5: and that Dan Black costume. Right, So, and it turned
- 31:40Speaker 5: to a billion dollar happy accident for Marvel and Sony Pictures, right,
- 31:44Speaker 5: So that's how it is. And then when seven of
- 31:48Speaker 5: us left Marvel at the top of our game and
- 31:51Speaker 5: started Image Comics, and just so people know, everybody knows
- 31:55Speaker 5: Marvel and DC, right because of all the movies. If
- 31:58Speaker 5: you ask the next natural question, who's third, who's the
- 32:02Speaker 5: third biggest company, that's us Image and we have been
- 32:05Speaker 5: for over thirty years. So when we moved and started
- 32:11Speaker 5: Image Comic Book, nobody was buying Spawn. Nobody cared about Spawn.
- 32:16Speaker 5: That was the character. I'd created him in Calgary when
- 32:18Speaker 5: I was a kid going to high school in my basement,
- 32:21Speaker 5: when I was first starting to collect comics, and so
- 32:24Speaker 5: I had saved them all those years and pulled them
- 32:27Speaker 5: out and I go, we're going to do Spawn. But
- 32:31Speaker 5: nobody cared who that character was. What they cared about
- 32:34Speaker 5: at that time was that all of us who began
- 32:38Speaker 5: Image comics we had we were like the dream team
- 32:44Speaker 5: of artists and they were buying our art and so
- 32:47Speaker 5: they just look it. If you were if you were
- 32:51Speaker 5: Wayne Gretzky fan with the oilers and he went to
- 32:53Speaker 5: the Kings, you had to go to you had to
- 32:55Speaker 5: start watching Kings games. Right when Michael Jordan went to
- 32:58Speaker 5: the Washington Wizard, you had to start watching watching the
- 33:02Speaker 5: Washington Wizards. So Spawn was just that, and then the
- 33:06Speaker 5: bonus then was on each of us. And now I'm
- 33:09Speaker 5: just talking about my book to go, oh, they're buying
- 33:11Speaker 5: the book now because of me, because I'm that hot
- 33:14Speaker 5: Spider Man artist that they want more art from. And
- 33:17Speaker 5: let's see if they'll continue to buy it. I'm going
- 33:20Speaker 5: to have to deliver the goods. And now last I
- 33:24Speaker 5: think two days ago, I just handed an issue three
- 33:27Speaker 5: hundred and seventy of Spot.
- 33:29Speaker 3: Wow, Oh my god, I love it.
- 33:31Speaker 1: It's an incredible run. I remember being twenty years old
- 33:35Speaker 1: during the McGuire Sosa home run chase in nineteen ninety eight.
- 33:37Speaker 1: You mentioned being Canadian. We're all Canadian as well. I
- 33:39Speaker 1: was working at TSN as a production assistant. I was
- 33:41Speaker 1: going to school at Ryerson at the time, so I
- 33:43Speaker 1: remember being enraptured in the home run chase like everybody else.
- 33:46Speaker 1: And I remember cutting the sound of a young Todd
- 33:49Speaker 1: McFarlane saying, I'm not rich. I just love baseba like
- 33:51Speaker 1: nobody else. I'm paying three million dollars since Mark McGuire
- 33:54Speaker 1: Baseball trusts me, I'm mortgaging my future for this. I
- 33:56Speaker 1: just love baseball so much. And I remember thinking afterwards,
- 33:59Speaker 1: when all this stuff came out the Mitchell Portega Man
- 34:00Speaker 1: Poor topic front somewhere, is like, are you kidding me?
- 34:02Speaker 1: I paid three million dollars in this baseball what it's worth?
- 34:05Speaker 1: How Todd? Obviously we all got screwed by it, But
- 34:07Speaker 1: what was your reaction to all of that?
- 34:09Speaker 5: Well, first off, I didn't intend to spend that much.
- 34:12Speaker 5: Let's just be clear, right, I thought people would tap out.
- 34:16Speaker 5: That auction was held at Madison Square Garden. I had
- 34:23Speaker 5: just finished doing a fantasy camp in Florida for the
- 34:27Speaker 5: with the Baltimore Orioles. Because the guy who distributes the
- 34:30Speaker 5: most comic book was part owner of the Orioles at
- 34:33Speaker 5: that point and had been bugging me all the time
- 34:35Speaker 5: to come down there, right. So I finished it, and
- 34:38Speaker 5: then I had to get up to New York for
- 34:39Speaker 5: the for the press conference. There was an airline strike,
- 34:44Speaker 5: so I had to bake board and steal my way
- 34:46Speaker 5: literally all the way up to New York to get there.
- 34:49Speaker 5: But when the auction went here's here was here's what
- 34:53Speaker 5: Here's what went wrong In the hindsight is the young
- 34:57Speaker 5: lady that was bidding for me over the phone, she
- 35:01Speaker 5: had never done it before. She was the roommate of
- 35:04Speaker 5: somebody who worked at this auction house, and they knew
- 35:07Speaker 5: it was going to be kind of sort of busier
- 35:11Speaker 5: than usual, so they recruited some people, and so she
- 35:14Speaker 5: was on the phone going, hey, I've never done this before.
- 35:16Speaker 5: So where that cost me was if I had been
- 35:21Speaker 5: in the room, because I said, no, I just want
- 35:22Speaker 5: to be an anonymous bidder, right. If I had been
- 35:25Speaker 5: in the room at some point when I saw there
- 35:29Speaker 5: was another bidder that was serious, I would have just
- 35:32Speaker 5: stuck my hand up and never come down so that
- 35:34Speaker 5: that person could have seen I'm walking away with this
- 35:38Speaker 5: I don't give a shit what you're doing. I'm getting
- 35:40Speaker 5: this ball. But what ended up happening was at some
- 35:44Speaker 5: point the bidding. I think once it got past a million,
- 35:49Speaker 5: and I thought it would tap out at that point.
- 35:51Speaker 5: Once it got past a million, then wow, each bid
- 35:54Speaker 5: was then one hundred thousands. You had to go one
- 35:56Speaker 5: hundred each time. So when it bounced back to you,
- 35:58Speaker 5: it was like another two, another two, another two. And
- 36:02Speaker 5: I was telling her and it was and it was
- 36:04Speaker 5: literally I got to tell you guys, it was like
- 36:06Speaker 5: listening over the phone to a hockey game like I would.
- 36:10Speaker 5: She would bid, I go put the paddle up. Put
- 36:12Speaker 5: She couldn't hear me put the paddle. She put the
- 36:14Speaker 5: paddle up, and it'd be like like a little bit
- 36:16Speaker 5: of grown and then all of a sudden there'd be
- 36:19Speaker 5: a little bit of weight and then he, I guess,
- 36:21Speaker 5: put his paddle up, and then there was this cheer.
- 36:24Speaker 5: So it was like, oh, I see the home team's
- 36:26Speaker 5: taking the rush to the goalie down at the other
- 36:28Speaker 5: end here right and and I and it got so loud.
- 36:31Speaker 5: I kept saying, put the paddle up, and don't put
- 36:34Speaker 5: it down, and she's like, I can't understand what are
- 36:37Speaker 5: you saying? And so what that did to the guy
- 36:39Speaker 5: on the other end because I talked to him like
- 36:41Speaker 5: later and he goes, well, they kept putting the paddle down,
- 36:43Speaker 5: so I thought you were hesitating, Todd. And I'm like,
- 36:46Speaker 5: so this young lady cost me a lot o money.
- 36:51Speaker 5: But eventually I got the ball. Now here's here's why
- 36:56Speaker 5: I bought the ball. Do I like baseball? Shoot? Guys
- 36:59Speaker 5: would go on all day long. Do I like sports?
- 37:01Speaker 5: We're going for a week? I had been, I have,
- 37:05Speaker 5: I had started a toy company. And there's a couple
- 37:09Speaker 5: of rules in life, right like location, location, location, and
- 37:15Speaker 5: stick to what you know. And here's what I know sports.
- 37:18Speaker 5: So I go, I want to make sports figures, not
- 37:21Speaker 5: those starting lineup goofy little things around in the marketplace.
- 37:27Speaker 5: I'm I'm a hardcore collector, and I wouldn't give a
- 37:30Speaker 5: penny for though I never had one of them. I go, no,
- 37:33Speaker 5: I will not buy a bad fac simile of what
- 37:36Speaker 5: as an athlete. No, I'm not going to do it.
- 37:39Speaker 5: But when I try to get into the front doors
- 37:42Speaker 5: of the four major sports football, baseball, basketball, hockey, I couldn't.
- 37:47Speaker 5: They wouldn't let me in. I wasn't like, They're going,
- 37:49Speaker 5: who are you? And so I had to put my
- 37:52Speaker 5: auntie on the table at the big boy poker table.
- 37:56Speaker 5: And oddly for me, my calculation was, and you can
- 38:00Speaker 5: do odd things like this when you're not a public company.
- 38:03Speaker 5: I thought it was buying. I thought it was buying
- 38:06Speaker 5: that ball. If I get that ball, and then I
- 38:08Speaker 5: can get headlines, national headlines, which I did then very
- 38:13Speaker 5: quickly when I went back to those four sports, especially
- 38:16Speaker 5: the actual institutions. The unions welcomed me in prior to that,
- 38:20Speaker 5: but the but the the big boys, you know, who
- 38:23Speaker 5: owned the logos and the symbols, didn't. And then they
- 38:26Speaker 5: saw the headline and they they made this really easy
- 38:30Speaker 5: calculation of if he's got that much money to spend
- 38:35Speaker 5: on a baseball, he must be successful. Bring him in
- 38:38Speaker 5: and and and like I said before, literally I did.
- 38:41Speaker 5: I had to beg boor and steal every penny to
- 38:43Speaker 5: even pay for that. But that was it. So I
- 38:46Speaker 5: got in and in short order I ended up having
- 38:48Speaker 5: the NHL, the NFL, NBA, and Major League Baseball, the
- 38:53Speaker 5: players and and the uniforms. Because you have to have
- 38:58Speaker 5: two license you have to you have to get the
- 39:00Speaker 5: league to sign off, so I got the logos in
- 39:03Speaker 5: the uniform, and then I had to get the union
- 39:05Speaker 5: to sign off, so I have the players right. And
- 39:08Speaker 5: again you can imagine since there's hats and shirts sold
- 39:12Speaker 5: that the union doesn't get nearly as much money as
- 39:14Speaker 5: the leagues with the logos. So they were more than happy.
- 39:17Speaker 5: So I had I had the baseball Union and I
- 39:22Speaker 5: had the hockey Union. Said yes, and I began making
- 39:26Speaker 5: those two. My very first version of both of those
- 39:29Speaker 5: were without sanctioned logos, right and oh yeah yeah. And
- 39:35Speaker 5: so at some point then I came in to the
- 39:38Speaker 5: NHL and I had this meeting and I remember there
- 39:41Speaker 5: were all these lawyers sitting around the table and they
- 39:44Speaker 5: sat there and I had my toys, and there's like
- 39:47Speaker 5: Pavel Burrey. I had Pavel Burrey who was playing at
- 39:50Speaker 5: that point, he was playing for the Panthers. And they said,
- 39:54Speaker 5: you can't do this. Because I was just doing sort
- 39:57Speaker 5: of like generic stuff. They go, you can't do this, Todd,
- 40:00Speaker 5: I go do what they go, you can't do this.
- 40:03Speaker 5: This looks too much like the as I go, it's
- 40:05Speaker 5: not the Panther's uniform, going well, you can't do this,
- 40:08Speaker 5: we're gonna sue you, and I go, what do you say?
- 40:12Speaker 5: Like that? We're here so you guys can threaten me? Okay, cool?
- 40:17Speaker 5: So here's what I'm gonna tell you. First off, and
- 40:21Speaker 5: there isn't a Google back then, but like you guys
- 40:23Speaker 5: should do your research. You grab the wrong tiger by
- 40:27Speaker 5: the tail, right. I love these kinds of fights. So
- 40:33Speaker 5: here's what we're gonna here's what we're gonna do.
- 40:36Speaker 3: You spawn, you.
- 40:37Speaker 5: Are gonna tell me that you're gonna go into court.
- 40:42Speaker 5: I've done my homework. All you have to do is
- 40:44Speaker 5: prove eleven different changes from the original and you're good
- 40:48Speaker 5: to go. I will walk you through twenty one of them. Right,
- 40:53Speaker 5: you're red for the panthers is not the same red
- 40:55Speaker 5: I have. I have like a burnt red. Right. So
- 40:58Speaker 5: if you want to go into court and say you
- 41:01Speaker 5: own fucking reddish, you're gonna lose. And then you own
- 41:07Speaker 5: yellowish colors, you're gonna lose. And that somehow you're the
- 41:11Speaker 5: only guy that can put stripes on a piece of cloth,
- 41:14Speaker 5: you're gonna lose. And here's your problem today. Right now,
- 41:19Speaker 5: everybody believes your threat because you send out these letters
- 41:22Speaker 5: all the time, the seas and desist. Not just the NHL, everybody, right,
- 41:26Speaker 5: all the big leagues, they do it. They protect their
- 41:28Speaker 5: their marks. I get it. But if we go to
- 41:32Speaker 5: court and you win, you already think you own one
- 41:35Speaker 5: hundred percent? What's your update, what's your what's your good day?
- 41:38Speaker 5: You own a one hundred percent? That you win, you have
- 41:39Speaker 5: one hundred percent. But if you don't, not only do
- 41:43Speaker 5: you have to give a piece back to me, but
- 41:47Speaker 5: that that case will go across the entire globe and
- 41:52Speaker 5: anybody who wants to then do a knockoff can then
- 41:56Speaker 5: do a knockoff. Now we can go that way, and
- 42:00Speaker 5: I'm perfectly willing to go that way. Or let's let's
- 42:04Speaker 5: look behind door number two. I give you a check
- 42:07Speaker 5: for a half a million dollars for a minimum guarantee,
- 42:10Speaker 5: and you give me the right show. I can actually
- 42:12Speaker 5: do the red that you own and the logo that
- 42:14Speaker 5: you own, and I can put Pavlo Brewery in the
- 42:16Speaker 5: uniform and that I'm gonna make this toy anyway, and
- 42:20Speaker 5: you can neither sew and get nothing. Could you already
- 42:23Speaker 5: think you want one hundred percent? Or you can take
- 42:25Speaker 5: this check for half a million and then I gotta
- 42:28Speaker 5: pay royalties on top of every sale for the rest
- 42:30Speaker 5: of my natural life, as long as I've got a
- 42:32Speaker 5: contract with you. I don't know. This seems like an
- 42:35Speaker 5: easy choice to me. But and so they went away
- 42:39Speaker 5: and they came back. Browse furled, and he went, Okay, begrudguingly,
- 42:44Speaker 5: We'll take the half a mill. So I was doing
- 42:47Speaker 5: NHL toys after that. Cool.
- 42:50Speaker 4: Well, that's an unbelievable story. And I wonder, I expect
- 42:55Speaker 4: your time with the Oilers was a little bit smoother
- 42:59Speaker 4: talking about anties on the table and especially creating or
- 43:03Speaker 4: maybe not, but how was that creating the team logo
- 43:06Speaker 4: and and and also being a part of that organization.
- 43:09Speaker 4: Whether it was rocky or whether it was, it was
- 43:11Speaker 4: a good experience for you.
- 43:13Speaker 5: Okay, So so i'll give you the Rocky part for
- 43:16Speaker 5: I'll give you right.
- 43:16Speaker 3: I love here. I love hearing the Rocky part.
- 43:19Speaker 5: Yeah, okay. So I'm a big hockey guy, right, so,
- 43:23Speaker 5: but I just it was driving me crazy how the
- 43:28Speaker 5: NHL was being played at that time, right, this is
- 43:31Speaker 5: one dominic Hassak and Key and Keith Pronger were winning
- 43:36Speaker 5: and Chris was it too defensive?
- 43:40Speaker 3: Like what do you think about it? Yeah, okay, to defensive?
- 43:43Speaker 5: Okay, too defensive, Like what are you talking about? They
- 43:46Speaker 5: were all time low since the fifties of scoring pull game,
- 43:49Speaker 5: Like you go to any CEO at any company and go, hey,
- 43:53Speaker 5: we're selling at the rate that we were forty five
- 43:56Speaker 5: years ago. That CEO is out right like, I don't
- 44:00Speaker 5: know why, and so I just so. I would then
- 44:03Speaker 5: do these interviews going I don't understand. I don't understand
- 44:07Speaker 5: why they don't get rid of the center ice line.
- 44:09Speaker 5: I don't understand why they don't go four on four.
- 44:12Speaker 5: I don't understand why they don't go into overtime. I
- 44:14Speaker 5: don't understand. I don't understand. And then here's the rocky part.
- 44:20Speaker 5: I would say that after I became sort of minority owner,
- 44:23Speaker 5: and then bring the phone would ring and it'd be
- 44:27Speaker 5: like the NHL front office and they're going, hello, this
- 44:31Speaker 5: is the Commissioner's office. Oh yeah, we're gonna send you
- 44:35Speaker 5: a bill. You've just been fined ten thousand dollars. And
- 44:38Speaker 5: I'm like pardon and they're like yeah. If you go
- 44:41Speaker 5: like when you signed the contract to become an owner,
- 44:44Speaker 5: there's like three binders, this thick of paperwork, and I
- 44:47Speaker 5: should have read all of it, but I didn't. And
- 44:50Speaker 5: so they went, if you go to binder three, page
- 44:52Speaker 5: twelve hundred and forty four, like section two, right, it
- 44:57Speaker 5: says something where I'm not supposed to disparage the league
- 45:01Speaker 5: or something like that, right, And I go, I'm not
- 45:03Speaker 5: disparaging the league, but okay, whatever. So I had to
- 45:08Speaker 5: pay it. Then I did another interview. I guess I
- 45:11Speaker 5: got wound up again and bring, uh, We're going to
- 45:15Speaker 5: send you another bill, right. The third bill was the
- 45:18Speaker 5: oilers paid for it. Right. They were just like Todd,
- 45:22Speaker 5: why why are we having to pay this bill? We'll
- 45:23Speaker 5: do it, but why we have this bill? Anyways, I
- 45:29Speaker 5: I we were at the Wayne Gretzky retirement uh, where
- 45:34Speaker 5: we raised his number up into the rafters, right, and
- 45:39Speaker 5: we were having a big celebration at dinner where Wayne
- 45:43Speaker 5: was there and a couple of dignitaries and uh uh
- 45:49Speaker 5: Commissioner Gordon or commissioner said. Commissioner Batman came in and
- 45:55Speaker 5: I was with some of the other guys and he
- 45:58Speaker 5: walked by and he goes, hellong time, and I went, hey,
- 46:02Speaker 5: mister Batman, good to see you. And all the other
- 46:05Speaker 5: minority owners of the oiler were like, man, Garry Betman
- 46:09Speaker 5: knows you. You know, Gary Bitman, he knows you. Man,
- 46:11Speaker 5: that's super cool. And I'm like, well, I don't know
- 46:13Speaker 5: that he knows me. I don't know that that would
- 46:16Speaker 5: be the world. I think I'm kind of infamous with them.
- 46:19Speaker 5: But okay, shortly thereafter I got a meeting. I was
- 46:22Speaker 5: in New York. I got a meeting with Commissioner Betman. Now,
- 46:26Speaker 5: for some reason, I don't remember why, I had my
- 46:28Speaker 5: seven year old daughter with me and I go, you're
- 46:30Speaker 5: going to the meeting. So she came into the meeting
- 46:33Speaker 5: and he just wanted to hear, like, my what my
- 46:37Speaker 5: rants were right? And he should never have done this
- 46:39Speaker 5: because that's like you. You asked Todd, what do you
- 46:42Speaker 5: think is wrong with hockey? That was like Mussolini from
- 46:44Speaker 5: the balcony, Right, I just want I just go, oh,
- 46:48Speaker 5: he said that one thing, So tell me your concerns.
- 46:50Speaker 5: And I just verbal vomited at him for an hour. Right.
- 46:55Speaker 5: But here's the fun part about it. As he was
- 46:57Speaker 5: doing that, my seven year old who's in his office,
- 47:00Speaker 5: bore it out of her skull, right, And so he
- 47:03Speaker 5: Gary was listening to me intently, and then every now
- 47:05Speaker 5: and then would go, just on, just one second time
- 47:09Speaker 5: that excuse me, a little girl, could you get your
- 47:11Speaker 5: feet off the Corinthian leather chair there? Just like just
- 47:16Speaker 5: could you turn around and sit? Yeah, thank you, Thank you,
- 47:18Speaker 5: my dear, and then like everyone, and then take twenty
- 47:22Speaker 5: minutes later, excuse me, could you put down that voss,
- 47:25Speaker 5: that mean voss? Could you just put it down on
- 47:27Speaker 5: the shelf stack. Thank you, my dear, just thank you.
- 47:31Speaker 5: So while she was basically touching all of his valuables,
- 47:35Speaker 5: I was I was going. And then not only was
- 47:38Speaker 5: I talking about all these things that later would come
- 47:41Speaker 5: to pass, because my wife would going, aren't those things
- 47:44Speaker 5: you used to get fined for? And I'm like, yeah, whatever.
- 47:47Speaker 5: But as part of the rules, My argument with him
- 47:50Speaker 5: was all the things I just said above and he
- 47:52Speaker 5: and he would say, well, we have a rules commission.
- 47:55Speaker 5: I'm going Gary, stop thinking about it, just implement one
- 47:59Speaker 5: of these rules like in the NBA. They want, Oh,
- 48:02Speaker 5: let's put a three point line on it. Oh, we
- 48:04Speaker 5: don't like that. We're gonna go back to two point. No,
- 48:07Speaker 5: we're gonna go back to the three. No, it's too far.
- 48:09Speaker 5: We're gonna move like you can't do his zone defense. No,
- 48:12Speaker 5: they change rules once a year, like take whatever the
- 48:16Speaker 5: ten you're thinking about, implement one. Let me tell you
- 48:20Speaker 5: I was never invited back to Gary's office after those
- 48:27Speaker 5: kinds of conversations. And at some point when I did
- 48:31Speaker 5: sell my piece years later, it freed me to be
- 48:36Speaker 5: able to just talk out loud again and say the things.
- 48:40Speaker 5: And I don't know. I go, why do you want
- 48:43Speaker 5: to make Paul Korea a goon? He's now having to
- 48:47Speaker 5: choke up his stick in the corners to protect himself
- 48:51Speaker 5: the way that the rules are right now. And Wayne Gretzky,
- 48:54Speaker 5: a young nineteen year old Wayne Gretzky came into this league,
- 48:57Speaker 5: they would be calling him the pretty good one, not
- 49:00Speaker 5: the great one, because he couldn't do what he did before.
- 49:05Speaker 5: I don't get it. Why on goalie pads. Why I'm
- 49:10Speaker 5: all for protecting the players, but you know that the
- 49:13Speaker 5: leg is only this thick. Why does the pad have
- 49:16Speaker 5: to be this stick right? Why are you doing what
- 49:21Speaker 5: do you like? Why do you have to I'd cut
- 49:23Speaker 5: those pads down, or I'd make them that bigger since
- 49:26Speaker 5: the players are getting bigger. I'm not saying a lot
- 49:28Speaker 5: and they're going, what do you want games to be
- 49:30Speaker 5: eight to nine? No, but I want to go from
- 49:32Speaker 5: two to one to at least three to two. And
- 49:35Speaker 5: I was threatening to go to games where I know
- 49:37Speaker 5: I'd have a good seat where the camera would be,
- 49:40Speaker 5: and I'd have my big sign, and every time the
- 49:42Speaker 5: goalie stopped stopped it, I'd have a big sign going.
- 49:45Speaker 5: It'd be sort of anti climate change. Stop protecting the air,
- 49:49Speaker 5: because that's what's happening. If the pad wasn't there, it
- 49:52Speaker 5: would have gone through the air. It wasn't gonna hit
- 49:54Speaker 5: his leg. I don't understand it. I don't understand you guys,
- 49:57Speaker 5: But you guys, do you Gary, I'll I'll just make
- 49:59Speaker 5: my toys do what we gotta do. But here we are.
- 50:02Speaker 5: Now we changed some of the rules. Oh okay, Oh
- 50:07Speaker 5: so you opened it up. So you now without the
- 50:09Speaker 5: center line, you have basically the bomb the breakaway pass.
- 50:12Speaker 5: Oh okay, every other sport has it. I'll go, go
- 50:16Speaker 5: go gog. But anyways, don't get me wound up. What
- 50:19Speaker 5: you have.
- 50:20Speaker 1: Great stuff for Todd McFarland again spawn Venom Image Comics.
- 50:24Speaker 1: This was tremendous and again, this is a good time
- 50:26Speaker 1: to remind people we are a collaboration of the NHL
- 50:28Speaker 1: and iHeartMedia. Todd, this was fantastic stuff. Man can't thank
- 50:30Speaker 1: you enough.
- 50:31Speaker 5: Sure all right, you guys be good.
- 50:41Speaker 1: Thanks once again, Todd McFarland. He was fantastic. Emmy's recap.
- 50:44Speaker 1: A lot of ovations there for Stephen Colbert, course, who's
- 50:46Speaker 1: showays being canceled, so he finally gets to win an Emmy.
- 50:49Speaker 1: Congrats to him. I was just enraged though, Martin Scorsese,
- 50:53Speaker 1: who was America's greatest living director, has won an Emmy before.
- 50:55Speaker 1: He won it for directing Boardwalk Empire the Pilot, but
- 50:57Speaker 1: he was nominated for an Emmy. He was nominated for
- 50:59Speaker 1: Best Guest Actor in the Show, and I was so
- 51:01Speaker 1: thrilled that the studio did so well, especially Seth Rogen
- 51:04Speaker 1: fellow Canadian Vancouver guy. Jesus, I know he wents for acting,
- 51:07Speaker 1: writing and directing. That's incredible trifecta. But Marty was robbed.
- 51:11Speaker 1: He loses to Brian Krantz, and again I love Crantz,
- 51:13Speaker 1: who doesn't love Walter White, But he's not enough Emmys
- 51:15Speaker 1: for acting. Marty could have won his first Acting Emmy
- 51:18Speaker 1: for Best Guest Actor in a comedy series. He loses
- 51:20Speaker 1: along with Ron Howard, who tal was also a fan
- 51:22Speaker 1: of the Congrats to Brian Krant and it wins for
- 51:24Speaker 1: the studio. Your thoughts on the Emmy Awards.
- 51:27Speaker 3: Uh, well, I mean I did watch it as well.
- 51:29Speaker 3: You know, my wife forced it.
- 51:30Speaker 4: She sat me down, tied me to a chair, and
- 51:32Speaker 4: opened my eyelids open. So I was forced, much to
- 51:35Speaker 4: my chagrin. And you know, my wife made a funny comment.
- 51:38Speaker 3: The other day.
- 51:39Speaker 4: She's like, I was like, who the hell watches this?
- 51:42Speaker 4: We're one of four people watching this and we live
- 51:44Speaker 4: in a condo. You know, we live in a condo
- 51:46Speaker 4: building in Arizona because we you know, we travel so much,
- 51:49Speaker 4: and we literally look across the way and in one
- 51:53Speaker 4: of the condo buildings across somebody's watching the Emmy, some
- 51:55Speaker 4: old person. And my wife's like, yeah, these fucking old
- 51:58Speaker 4: people and me watched the Emmys, And I guess you
- 52:01Speaker 4: as well, tal So Talon, Uh but I like, you know,
- 52:07Speaker 4: do I like those award shows?
- 52:08Speaker 5: No?
- 52:09Speaker 4: I don't like the self pandering and the self masturbatory.
- 52:12Speaker 4: I like the Boys and Girls Club thing. I thought
- 52:14Speaker 4: it was hilarious. I know a lot of people were mad, but.
- 52:17Speaker 3: It just goes to show you. I get it. You
- 52:19Speaker 3: win an award, it's amazing.
- 52:21Speaker 4: But to what Nate Bargatzi was saying is like more
- 52:24Speaker 4: people are watching social media, so do your thank yous,
- 52:27Speaker 4: and if you want to do something really long and extended,
- 52:29Speaker 4: give really a heartfelt thank you. Don't take this stage
- 52:32Speaker 4: to hijack it for the kids. And exactly the way
- 52:35Speaker 4: that I predicted it, the actors did not give a
- 52:37Speaker 4: fuck about the kids, and they were like negative seventy
- 52:40Speaker 4: grands and.
- 52:42Speaker 3: Then they're all like, well, it's the first time we won.
- 52:44Speaker 3: And I get it.
- 52:45Speaker 4: And I think it's a big thing when you're a
- 52:46Speaker 4: first time winner for an Emmy to thank people so
- 52:50Speaker 4: and I know it's a hard job to win those things.
- 52:53Speaker 4: It's hard to win. But yeah, to your point, I mean,
- 52:56Speaker 4: there's a lot to like about it. I loved I
- 52:58Speaker 4: wish Corsese would have won, but it's hard to deny
- 53:01Speaker 4: as much as Brian Cranston has won so many awards,
- 53:04Speaker 4: how good he was, he was hysterical chief and how
- 53:08Speaker 4: that they told him I read something. They basically told
- 53:12Speaker 4: him that last episode at the studio like hey, like
- 53:16Speaker 4: just like run wild, and they did not expect him
- 53:18Speaker 4: to like walk around his pants and they're like, holy fuck,
- 53:20Speaker 4: like is he going too far?
- 53:22Speaker 1: That?
- 53:23Speaker 3: Did you read that?
- 53:24Speaker 1: I didn't know that, but I thought it was but
- 53:26Speaker 1: he's in the gondel of his pants.
- 53:27Speaker 3: But they told him it was so funny.
- 53:29Speaker 4: They gave him the leash and they literally like Seth Rogan,
- 53:33Speaker 4: I think, was looking being like this is is this
- 53:35Speaker 4: too much?
- 53:37Speaker 3: Like? Because he just went after it so great.
- 53:40Speaker 6: Tell your thoughts in the Emmys, I watched it a
- 53:42Speaker 6: little different this time. I didn't watch it live. I
- 53:45Speaker 6: the the Television Academy really quickly had like basically YouTube
- 53:50Speaker 6: clips of every award ready to go as soon as
- 53:53Speaker 6: the show is over, So I just watched all the
- 53:55Speaker 6: acceptance speeches and the presentations. I didn't watch much of
- 53:58Speaker 6: Bergosa's gen z. Yeah, let's just get through this so
- 54:03Speaker 6: I can watch some tiktoks.
- 54:05Speaker 3: Damn it.
- 54:05Speaker 2: No. I I loved seeing uh. I loved seeing the
- 54:09Speaker 2: studio get so much love.
- 54:11Speaker 3: I love that show.
- 54:12Speaker 6: I was so blown away and was really thought it
- 54:16Speaker 6: was really cool to see Seth Rogan like sweep the awards.
- 54:19Speaker 2: Basically, I've killed it.
- 54:20Speaker 3: I think he was.
- 54:21Speaker 2: I think he is.
- 54:22Speaker 6: It's the best acting performance of his career in my opinion,
- 54:26Speaker 6: and obviously the writing and the direction is next level
- 54:29Speaker 6: with all these one shots.
- 54:31Speaker 2: You know, so I love the show. That That was
- 54:34Speaker 2: my main takeaway.
- 54:35Speaker 6: I liked the Little Kid from Adolescences except in speak.
- 54:39Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, that was pretty cool.
- 54:41Speaker 6: I mean, I'm not a big awards show guy, like
- 54:44Speaker 6: like JD said, unless my wife is watching it and
- 54:47Speaker 6: I happen to be in the room, I'm not really
- 54:48Speaker 6: paying much attention to it. But love seeing uh love
- 54:52Speaker 6: seeing the studio get get all that love.
- 54:55Speaker 1: And congrats Adolescence and the pit huge winners there he
- 54:59Speaker 1: come back.
- 54:59Speaker 4: Yeah, and then who knew the show about the Hollywood
- 55:04Speaker 4: and all the studio execs right mass you know, just
- 55:08Speaker 4: massaging them wins all the awards.
- 55:10Speaker 1: Class's my buddy' said Hollywood votes for Hollywood. He goes,
- 55:13Speaker 1: what a surprise, A big circles jerk wins all the awards.
- 55:15Speaker 1: I'm like, yeah, this is not surprising the studio would
- 55:17Speaker 1: do so well. Weapons is a critical acclaimed film ninety
- 55:20Speaker 1: four percent on Rotten Tomatoes. I'm not a big horror
- 55:22Speaker 1: movie guy. My friends kept seeing it. Go see it.
- 55:24Speaker 1: I said, well, I'll just wait till it's streaming. So
- 55:25Speaker 1: I paid twenty bucks to watch it on direct TV
- 55:28Speaker 1: the other night, and probably a good thing I didn't
- 55:29Speaker 1: watch in the theater because there's more than a few
- 55:31Speaker 1: jump scaries. You watch it during the day, it's not
- 55:32Speaker 1: nearly as scary, although, as my friends had said to me,
- 55:34Speaker 1: know it's a horror comedy. It's a kind of in
- 55:36Speaker 1: that Jordan peele Vain listen. I thought it was an
- 55:38Speaker 1: excellent movie. The less said about it, the better. Basically,
- 55:40Speaker 1: the premise is one morning, twenty kids from one classroom disappear,
- 55:44Speaker 1: and we don't know why that is. And I thought
- 55:46Speaker 1: the mosaic structure of it was fascinating, you know, the
- 55:48Speaker 1: one sections about Julia Gardner who's the teacher, Josh Brown's
- 55:51Speaker 1: a father of one of the kids, and then the
- 55:52Speaker 1: story goes around and around. I thought it was ingeniously plotted.
- 55:55Speaker 1: I thought it was an excellent payoff, good horror movie,
- 55:57Speaker 1: not as scary, So that's a good news for me.
- 55:59Speaker 1: Weapons a good solid film at the theaters. What do
- 56:01Speaker 1: you think, Jendy.
- 56:04Speaker 4: Love the love the premise, love the build up, didn't
- 56:07Speaker 4: love that it would ended up being some like you know,
- 56:11Speaker 4: weird foodoo, juniper bush or whatever the hell it was, Like,
- 56:14Speaker 4: I was kind of hoping it was like because they
- 56:16Speaker 4: kind of teased it this like virus, you know, when
- 56:19Speaker 4: they had the wild nat geo, this fungus thing, and
- 56:23Speaker 4: that's kind of been the a lot of the movies
- 56:25Speaker 4: now talking about like these diseases and fungle things that
- 56:28Speaker 4: take over you. So, I mean, I loved the villain.
- 56:32Speaker 4: I thought she was incredible. And I do love that
- 56:36Speaker 4: first scene with the the you know, the the gay
- 56:39Speaker 4: couple and he basically she's sitting there, Can I get a.
- 56:41Speaker 3: Bowl of water?
- 56:42Speaker 4: And I just I love that whole build up, and
- 56:45Speaker 4: then kind of after that, like the whole I just
- 56:48Speaker 4: didn't know, but you know, I I did think it's
- 56:51Speaker 4: I like the pacing of it and the jump scares.
- 56:54Speaker 4: I watched it in theaters with Jill and I jumped
- 56:57Speaker 4: out of my seat on one of the scenes like and.
- 57:00Speaker 3: Was like had I was like this.
- 57:02Speaker 1: Like you just He's like here comes, Yeah, don't do
- 57:06Speaker 1: it to me.
- 57:06Speaker 3: Yeah. So but I liked it. It's a good movie.
- 57:09Speaker 1: Yeah, really definitely not not not a genre I watch
- 57:11Speaker 1: a ton of, like you said, with the horror movies,
- 57:12Speaker 1: but I thought it was a well made genre movie
- 57:13Speaker 1: and uh, definitely excellent performances across the board. All right,
- 57:16Speaker 1: a little more hockey, we'll get out of here. Captain
- 57:18Speaker 1: returns the Rangers fed a pretty natural part of where
- 57:20Speaker 1: it came. The shoulder patches will wear this season. The
- 57:22Speaker 1: team will be sporting a logo for Game seven, the
- 57:24Speaker 1: multi platform sports and entertainment brand copan and by Mark Messier.
- 57:28Speaker 1: What do you think about this shitty mess and the
- 57:30Speaker 1: Captain returns for the Rangers.
- 57:33Speaker 4: Yeah, I love it, love everything about it. I mean
- 57:36Speaker 4: it's I just like, yeah, it's just I mean, as
- 57:42Speaker 4: simple as that. Let's just keep it simple, stupid.
- 57:44Speaker 3: I like it. I love it.
- 57:45Speaker 4: Yeah, it fits, it fits, and I like it. You know,
- 57:49Speaker 4: I know we're always looking for me to hate on stuff,
- 57:51Speaker 4: but I love it exactly.
- 57:52Speaker 1: You're all in on Broadway here. Connor McDavid got to
- 57:55Speaker 1: enjoy when the money Fringe benefits to be in the
- 57:57Speaker 1: face of the NHL of the weekend, He got to
- 57:59Speaker 1: hang out on stage with country star Morgan Wallen during
- 58:01Speaker 1: his concert Edmonton. Your thoughts and Morgan Wallen.
- 58:06Speaker 3: Well, now we can go to something I don't.
- 58:07Speaker 1: Like that was my assumption. I all all of you
- 58:10Speaker 1: shocked if JD.
- 58:11Speaker 4: I'm sick of this Morgan wall and walk out shit.
- 58:13Speaker 4: I'm just like, are we serious? Like okay, you know
- 58:16Speaker 4: famous people great and watching them awkwardly walk and then
- 58:20Speaker 4: it's he's like doing this, and then you know the
- 58:24Speaker 4: half of the actors and people are just kind of
- 58:25Speaker 4: walking and then you kind of rub your hands together
- 58:28Speaker 4: and like look at the camera and like hype everybody up,
- 58:30Speaker 4: and then you have another two minute walk to get
- 58:33Speaker 4: to the stage. So I think it's just a little
- 58:36Speaker 4: bit overplayed. Now that's me zigging when everybody's zagging. But
- 58:38Speaker 4: I don't know any Morgan Wallen songs.
- 58:41Speaker 1: Nor do I. I'm glad youthson was sending me a
- 58:43Speaker 1: Morgan wall In contra and I go, I gotta be
- 58:45Speaker 1: watching that. I know the name. I wouldn't know one single.
- 58:47Speaker 1: Normally I would at least know one single. I have
- 58:49Speaker 1: no idea Morganwallan is all but a huge star.
- 58:51Speaker 4: Yeah, didn't he get caught like a bunch of times,
- 58:53Speaker 4: Like wasn't he like canceled and not canceled?
- 58:55Speaker 3: And and I don't.
- 58:57Speaker 4: Know what can you tell us about would had he
- 59:03Speaker 4: had a song with Posts alone.
- 59:04Speaker 2: I like, that's the only one I know by him.
- 59:07Speaker 6: And as far as what you're referring to my my
- 59:10Speaker 6: understanding is he got busted dropping some N bombs, some
- 59:14Speaker 6: hard That's what I got what it was and uh
- 59:19Speaker 6: after the country if it turns out misinformed, But then
- 59:23Speaker 6: I got got geez no, I know, yeah, but I
- 59:26Speaker 6: guess it was he was he got out of uh
- 59:29Speaker 6: of jail, of celebrity jail.
- 59:31Speaker 2: Eventually, I guess, wow, okay, well that's.
- 59:33Speaker 3: What it was. Yeah, I was.
- 59:34Speaker 4: I was like some I kind of was like, didn't
- 59:37Speaker 4: fucking like It's like seeing Armie Hammer at kind of
- 59:40Speaker 4: the resurgence of Armie Hammer, and it was like, those
- 59:42Speaker 4: are like all these weird allegations are Kevin or Kevin Spacey.
- 59:46Speaker 4: It's like, oh, you guys, just get a new publicist
- 59:48Speaker 4: in here, right back out there.
- 59:50Speaker 1: Well, from racially charged mature from Morgan Wall to another
- 59:53Speaker 1: racially charged guy in Shane Gillis. Of course, he lost
- 59:55Speaker 1: his job with sn L because of some jokes in
- 59:57Speaker 1: the surface of the past, but Asian comedians, it's all
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: worked out well though for Shane though, he's never been
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: more popular SNL actually brought him back when he joked,
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: and now there's a great pick making the rounds over
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: the weekend of NHL Stars and Buddy's Cole Cottfield and
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: Trevor Zegres hanging out with Shane Gills. Gill's probably a
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: huge Philly guy, loves the Eagles, loves the Flyer, so
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: the Segrets connection there makes sense. But do a little
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: bit crowd work your thoughts on Shane Gills. I think
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: he's really funny and for everyone does a Trump impression, JD.
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: Gillis might do the best one.
- 1:00:23Speaker 4: He's just like the classic everyday man comedian and I
- 1:00:27Speaker 4: just think he's so incredibly funny everything he does. I
- 1:00:31Speaker 4: mean him on I don't know what the name of
- 1:00:34Speaker 4: that show is, The Football Show with McAfee when he's
- 1:00:36Speaker 4: when he's chirping Nick Saban and he calls him Alabama Jones.
- 1:00:40Speaker 4: It's one of the all time great clips if we
- 1:00:42Speaker 4: If you could find that and people are listening, go
- 1:00:45Speaker 4: watch that. He basically makes a joke pregame show about
- 1:00:49Speaker 4: how you know Nick Saban pays his players, and then
- 1:00:51Speaker 4: he's on set with him, and then Nick Saban's like
- 1:00:55Speaker 4: pissed off. Oh, and he basically is on live and
- 1:00:57Speaker 4: he's being like, I thought, this is a fun show,
- 1:00:59Speaker 4: and he's like Alabama Jones over here because he's wearing
- 1:01:02Speaker 4: like an Indiana Jones hat, because Alva Jones over here.
- 1:01:05Speaker 3: Good kiss at me.
- 1:01:05Speaker 4: And it's just like he's so good at kind of
- 1:01:08Speaker 4: toning that line and being like, don't be a dickhead.
- 1:01:10Speaker 3: And you know, I love him.
- 1:01:12Speaker 4: I'm a big fan of his and my wife loves him,
- 1:01:14Speaker 4: and you know, Tim Dillon, all those guys.
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: Un Tel, you love this joke from the SPI's about Belichick.
- 1:01:21Speaker 2: Well, I was just gonna drop this one quick.
- 1:01:23Speaker 6: I loved him at the SPZ and I'm not an
- 1:01:25Speaker 6: award show guy, but he made it. He started with
- 1:01:27Speaker 6: a joke about shoey Otani and his bookie, and then
- 1:01:31Speaker 6: he followed up by saying a bookie is what Bill
- 1:01:33Speaker 6: Belichick reads his girlfriend before bedtime.
- 1:01:36Speaker 3: Loved it.
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: Amazing line, amazing, All right, Thanks so much, j D
