- 0:05Speaker 1: Welcome to Just the Cats with.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Hello Big Blue Nation. Welcome to Just the Cats. My
- 0:16Speaker 2: name is Michael Bennett. On this Wednesday, July fifty our
- 0:21Speaker 2: two year anniversary, which I had just I just realized
- 0:24Speaker 2: that this is our two year anniversary. I mean I
- 0:27Speaker 2: didn't I didn't remember until just now at the anniversary.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Michael Bennett. Yeah, well you were supposed to say no,
- 0:33Speaker 2: you just told me a couple of minutes ago. But anyway, Yeah, yeah,
- 0:36Speaker 2: I was gonna let you get the credit for that.
- 0:39Speaker 2: But yeah, which is hard to believe. It's it's it's
- 0:41Speaker 2: it just has flown by the last two years. Not really,
- 0:44Speaker 2: but it has just unbelievably flown by. Uh and and
- 0:49Speaker 2: I've I've enjoyed uh every minute of it, of it
- 0:52Speaker 2: with you, not really but what.
- 0:56Speaker 1: You're not paying attention.
- 0:59Speaker 2: Kevin Neel and you used to do that on a
- 1:01Speaker 2: Saturday Night live bit, which always made me laugh. I
- 1:04Speaker 2: mean it was he would say something that says that's
- 1:07Speaker 2: not really true but and then under his breath. But anyway,
- 1:10Speaker 2: I always thought that was funny. Kevin Nealan was always
- 1:12Speaker 2: between him and nor McDonald and that whole cast with
- 1:16Speaker 2: Adam Sandler, Chris Farley. They were my favorite of all
- 1:20Speaker 2: of Saturday Night Live. I thought they were the funniest.
- 1:23Speaker 2: Phil Hartman was a part of that Jan Hicks, but
- 1:28Speaker 2: I love that crew. But anyway, but happy second year anniversary.
- 1:32Speaker 2: I mean, we've now been married for a couple of
- 1:35Speaker 2: years here at this radio station, and okay, okay, I
- 1:41Speaker 2: just want to put that out there. I'm not married. Okay, okay, No, no,
- 1:44Speaker 2: you're not. And you're you're you're eagerly looking, that's for certain.
- 1:48Speaker 2: So maybe Corey Price can find you somebody.
- 1:51Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Because he drives down to see his girlfriend and Elizabethtown,
- 1:56Speaker 2: but maybe it's you should ride with him. But it's
- 2:00Speaker 2: been I'll tell you this justin it's been a fun
- 2:02Speaker 2: couple of years.
- 2:03Speaker 1: I think.
- 2:04Speaker 2: The funniest thing to me because it came to fruition
- 2:07Speaker 2: again yesterday.
- 2:08Speaker 1: We'll talk about that in a minute.
- 2:10Speaker 2: But the thing with you that makes me laugh the
- 2:13Speaker 2: most when you were so adamant that a tea particular
- 2:16Speaker 2: team is going to win or lose and the absolute
- 2:19Speaker 2: opposite happens. And of course, who did you pick yesterday
- 2:23Speaker 2: that was going to win in the uh in the
- 2:26Speaker 2: World Cup.
- 2:27Speaker 3: I mean, we don't have to stop. We don't have
- 2:29Speaker 3: to stop there if you want to go down that road.
- 2:32Speaker 3: I had France. I have see National League in the
- 2:36Speaker 3: All Star Game, so.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Oh, no, you did.
- 2:38Speaker 2: I went over to No, please tell me you didn't
- 2:44Speaker 2: bet on those two teams, did Okay?
- 2:46Speaker 1: Good? That's the best part is that you didn't do that.
- 2:49Speaker 2: So I'm afraid for you because if you do start
- 2:52Speaker 2: betting on the teams you believe are gonna win, you're
- 2:54Speaker 2: gonna be out of money in probably a matter of hours.
- 2:57Speaker 1: That days, not weeks, not month, might be why don't
- 2:59Speaker 1: have any money? Now?
- 3:01Speaker 2: Well, no, don't say that, but I just just yeah,
- 3:04Speaker 2: please please stop gambling. But that's why I don't want
- 3:07Speaker 2: to tell you the names of my horses, Okay, I
- 3:09Speaker 2: just don't want. I don't want to say anything about
- 3:11Speaker 2: my stable scene he killed stable and and let you
- 3:14Speaker 2: look that up on the website and then you see, oh,
- 3:18Speaker 2: Michael's horses racing day.
- 3:19Speaker 3: Please don't bet on it. Here's here's the thing with gambling. Yes,
- 3:23Speaker 3: my thing I tell everybody all the time. Don't gamble
- 3:27Speaker 3: more than you can afford to lose. Yes, And that's
- 3:30Speaker 3: something I'm really really good. So don't worry about are
- 3:32Speaker 3: you really? So that's the one thing I've got really control.
- 3:36Speaker 2: When it comes to gambling, you do it, but when
- 3:39Speaker 2: it comes to fireball, you have no control.
- 3:41Speaker 1: That's accurate.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Yeah, see, exactly, sugar somewhat still is. But I can
- 3:49Speaker 2: somehow say no to sugar today.
- 3:52Speaker 1: I do have that.
- 3:53Speaker 3: But I have had quite the accomplishment of the last
- 3:56Speaker 3: couple of days, which is drinking water. Monday, Yeah, oh,
- 4:00Speaker 3: Monday and Tuesday, I drank a tonne of water. I
- 4:03Speaker 3: have not had a soda since Sunday, and how hard
- 4:08Speaker 3: is that to do? It hasn't been hard. I was
- 4:10Speaker 3: telling the roommate last night. I was like, I didn't
- 4:13Speaker 3: even like plan to do this. It just kind of
- 4:15Speaker 3: happened where I haven't had a soda in two days.
- 4:17Speaker 3: So I think I'm just gonna keep going.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Good for you.
- 4:21Speaker 2: Well, they do say that soda is linked to dementia,
- 4:25Speaker 2: which that would check out. Dyke soda is exactly is
- 4:30Speaker 2: shay is linked to it? And I'm like, Okay, I'm
- 4:33Speaker 2: never having a Dyke coke again.
- 4:35Speaker 1: I'm addicted to dyke coke.
- 4:37Speaker 2: That's probably my biggest weakness is a Dike coke because
- 4:43Speaker 2: I listen. You go to a particular place in here
- 4:46Speaker 2: that has a letter with a circle around it, you
- 4:48Speaker 2: know where I'm talking about. If I go there, I
- 4:50Speaker 2: can use my little membership card and it now comes
- 4:53Speaker 2: down to a seventy nine cent drink.
- 4:56Speaker 1: And they have the best ice in the world. Okay,
- 4:58Speaker 1: Circle K.
- 4:59Speaker 2: They I love Circle K, the crushed ice that they have,
- 5:04Speaker 2: and they have the styrophone cups. I'm so sick and
- 5:07Speaker 2: tired of people getting rid of styrographone cups. Iceed to
- 5:10Speaker 2: go to McDonald's all because of their styrophone cups and
- 5:13Speaker 2: how good the diet cakes they did. I no longer
- 5:16Speaker 2: go to McDonald's to get die cokes. I go to
- 5:20Speaker 2: the Circle K because the ice is fantastic, and I
- 5:23Speaker 2: get it for seventy nine cents because I like bargains.
- 5:27Speaker 2: But that's what I am, A bargain hunter. Yeah, I
- 5:29Speaker 2: listen anytime I go to a store.
- 5:33Speaker 1: All right.
- 5:33Speaker 2: I went for the first time in a while, I
- 5:35Speaker 2: went to a local ice cream place establishment and I
- 5:41Speaker 2: was cutting up with the girl. I said, you know,
- 5:43Speaker 2: pretend I'm your boyfriend and give me a bigger scoop.
- 5:47Speaker 2: And no, it isn't sometimes I'll say something, Pretend I'm
- 5:51Speaker 2: your dad. Okay, pretend I'm your boyfriend and give me
- 5:54Speaker 2: a big scoop. And she started laughing. She goes, oh,
- 5:56Speaker 2: I'm going to give you a big, really big scoop.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Now. Perfect.
- 6:01Speaker 2: So I said, you get along with your boyfriend because
- 6:03Speaker 2: it's backfired before as well, it's backfired to the point
- 6:06Speaker 2: where I just broke up with my boyfriend. I'm like, oh, no, okay, man,
- 6:11Speaker 2: I really screwed this up. I'm so sorry. I'm sorry
- 6:13Speaker 2: to hear that. How are you getting along with your dad? Well,
- 6:16Speaker 2: I haven't seen my dad in a while. I'm like,
- 6:18Speaker 2: oh my gosh, I'm two for two right now. Who
- 6:22Speaker 2: are you close with? Well, I'm close with my mom.
- 6:24Speaker 2: I said, Pretend I'm your mom and give me a
- 6:27Speaker 2: bigger scopy. I mean all of that is oh, thanks
- 6:30Speaker 2: a lot. Okay, No, I do not. But anyway, don't
- 6:35Speaker 2: get me squirrel. Okay, because I've already scrolled three times
- 6:38Speaker 2: in the matter of what five minutes we've been on
- 6:41Speaker 2: this show. I'm getting ready to I'm getting ready to
- 6:43Speaker 2: do it again. But anyway, but I'm excited today because
- 6:47Speaker 2: in fact, coach for me University Kentucky former coach Tubby
- 6:51Speaker 2: Smith is going to be joining us to the second
- 6:53Speaker 2: hour at nine o'clock. That will be a lot of fun.
- 6:56Speaker 2: And of course timing's perfect because he was just he
- 7:00Speaker 2: elected to the Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame and I'm
- 7:03Speaker 2: excited talk to him about that in his stint that UK,
- 7:06Speaker 2: I am fully prepared with questions.
- 7:09Speaker 1: Love it.
- 7:11Speaker 2: Yeah, and uh I kind of like a lot of
- 7:13Speaker 2: the questions I've got ready.
- 7:15Speaker 1: Does one pertain to Saul a zero?
- 7:20Speaker 2: No, I didn't bring up Should I bring up anything
- 7:22Speaker 2: about Saul? No, I'm just I was just here where
- 7:26Speaker 2: he's at now. Oh, okay, see, I think that's a
- 7:29Speaker 2: great question. Where your boys and uh I.
- 7:35Speaker 1: Played?
- 7:37Speaker 2: Uh well, you had two boys played Georgia played one
- 7:41Speaker 2: played at Georgia, one played at Kentucky. Yeah, well it
- 7:44Speaker 2: was the Georgia ones name you remember? Don't ask me
- 7:48Speaker 2: that right now. I'll tell you in a few minutes.
- 7:49Speaker 2: But uh, I don't remember what his name is. I'm
- 7:52Speaker 2: sure somebody will text me in just the same thing.
- 7:55Speaker 2: Uh But oh, he has three sons. Yes, one was younger,
- 8:00Speaker 2: that's Rgi. That's it, and then Saul and Brian. Brian
- 8:04Speaker 2: was the young Brian played at Old myth? Did he
- 8:07Speaker 2: really good for him?
- 8:08Speaker 1: Okay? Yeah.
- 8:09Speaker 2: One of the things that you know that kept him
- 8:12Speaker 2: from staying is because he wanted one of his sons
- 8:14Speaker 2: being assistant coach or something like that, and so uh
- 8:17Speaker 2: uh but I don't remember how all that transpired. But uh,
- 8:21Speaker 2: I'm excited about him coming on. Uh.
- 8:24Speaker 1: I think it'll be a lot of fun. Uh.
- 8:25Speaker 2: Coach Smith has a lot of fun to talk to
- 8:28Speaker 2: talk to and what a fun personality he is. So
- 8:32Speaker 2: we'll have that at a second hour, nine o'clock, and
- 8:36Speaker 2: but before then, we have several other things we want
- 8:38Speaker 2: to talk about. And if you want to join us,
- 8:40Speaker 2: you can call in at five oh two three eight
- 8:41Speaker 2: four fourteen fifty. You want to text in on the
- 8:44Speaker 2: Whiskey Thief text line, you can do that five oh
- 8:45Speaker 2: two four one four fourteen fifty. And you can also
- 8:49Speaker 2: tweet me at just the Cat Radio.
- 8:51Speaker 1: Listen.
- 8:52Speaker 2: If you have a question you want me to try
- 8:54Speaker 2: and ask, as long as it's something that wouldn't offend him.
- 8:59Speaker 1: I'm not going to ask him anything.
- 9:01Speaker 2: I might have one question that's going to be right
- 9:04Speaker 2: on the edge, and I haven't decided if I'm going
- 9:08Speaker 2: to ask it or not. And uh, but but we'll see.
- 9:14Speaker 2: We'll see if I asked about now. I want to
- 9:16Speaker 2: keep it fun, lighthearted with coach Smith. Uh but anyway, Uh, well,
- 9:21Speaker 2: we'll we'll see if that happens or not. So uh
- 9:24Speaker 2: but but uh, I'm curious what it is really should
- 9:30Speaker 2: I should I talk to you about it first and
- 9:33Speaker 2: then see if it's something we should talk about if that's.
- 9:36Speaker 1: The route you think you need to go.
- 9:38Speaker 2: I know, I just want to know, all right, I'm
- 9:41Speaker 2: curious to ask him if he followed along when a
- 9:47Speaker 2: former coach at UK made the comment that UK is
- 9:50Speaker 2: a basketball school, how would he have responded if he
- 9:57Speaker 2: was a coach of another sport. I like it, so,
- 10:02Speaker 2: I just I'm curious because you know, the football coach
- 10:06Speaker 2: it took a little offense to it, as he should have.
- 10:11Speaker 2: Should I ask that question or stay away from anything
- 10:15Speaker 2: that's going to be considered controversy because that's a controversial
- 10:18Speaker 2: type of question. And again, I want to keep it
- 10:21Speaker 2: kind of light hearted. But honestly, I'd like to know.
- 10:24Speaker 2: I'd like to talk to him out now in IL today.
- 10:27Speaker 2: Is he glad he's out of basketball or coaching because
- 10:29Speaker 2: of the inn il I think I think the answer
- 10:31Speaker 2: would be yes. I think if you ask, I think
- 10:34Speaker 2: if you ask, majority of the coaches of his age,
- 10:42Speaker 2: I think I think the percentage would be ninety five
- 10:47Speaker 2: percent or more would say, yes, I am so glad
- 10:50Speaker 2: I'm out of coaching because you got to transfer portal
- 10:53Speaker 2: where they can transfer. You got to recruit the same
- 10:55Speaker 2: players all four years or five years if they stay,
- 10:59Speaker 2: that's to be old. And the fact that you've got
- 11:02Speaker 2: to raise money, the fact that you've got to negotiate pricing,
- 11:05Speaker 2: work with agents.
- 11:06Speaker 1: I think ninety five.
- 11:07Speaker 2: Percent or more of the coaches from that era would
- 11:10Speaker 2: say I am so done. Yeah, and I'm glad I'm
- 11:13Speaker 2: out of basketball. Would you agree with that? Yeah, for sure.
- 11:16Speaker 2: And I like that question.
- 11:17Speaker 3: Maybe save the football basketball on until if we have time, Oh,
- 11:22Speaker 3: if we have time.
- 11:23Speaker 2: Do you think why do you think it's a little
- 11:26Speaker 2: too controversial or do you think, eh, maybe people aren't
- 11:30Speaker 2: necessarily interested in that anymore.
- 11:32Speaker 3: Well, I'm just I'm not sure how he would answer.
- 11:35Speaker 3: I don't know, because I do you think he followed
- 11:38Speaker 3: along and would understand what you're even talking about.
- 11:41Speaker 1: I don't know. That's the other thing when I have
- 11:43Speaker 1: to get real.
- 11:45Speaker 2: Oh, I think I think majority of the country saw
- 11:49Speaker 2: that that was a bit of an embarrassing time, and
- 11:52Speaker 2: the way it was handled by a particular athletic director
- 11:56Speaker 2: was the wrong way to handle it. You just say, hey, hey,
- 11:58Speaker 2: we can't we're in all school. We're not just a
- 12:01Speaker 2: school of one sport. We're in all school. That's it enough.
- 12:06Speaker 2: And the fact that you had to get all both
- 12:08Speaker 2: coaches together and do this whole interview, Yeah, I didn't
- 12:11Speaker 2: think that went over too well. So I just think
- 12:14Speaker 2: that was mishandled. That's that's my personal opinion, whether or
- 12:17Speaker 2: not other people think that. I just I would have
- 12:19Speaker 2: handled it completely differently. You got to take something like that,
- 12:23Speaker 2: take it by the you know, the horns, and commute it.
- 12:30Speaker 1: What's that? Oh? I know that's where no, of course,
- 12:33Speaker 1: so thank you for noticing.
- 12:34Speaker 2: See two years right down and you know exactly where
- 12:38Speaker 2: I was going. Total hesitation there. It's like, okay, where
- 12:41Speaker 2: am I going with us? Okay, horns, I'll go with
- 12:43Speaker 2: the horns. But anyway, all right, did you watch two
- 12:49Speaker 2: things happened yesterday? We'll start with the first one because
- 12:52Speaker 2: it happened at three o'clock.
- 12:53Speaker 1: Are are you?
- 12:54Speaker 2: Are you one of those that's upset about this, this
- 12:56Speaker 2: timing that it's happening at because I see I see
- 13:00Speaker 2: our friend, our good friend Nick Raus really criticized it.
- 13:04Speaker 1: He hates the time at three o'clock. You love it?
- 13:08Speaker 1: And did you clearly you watch the game? I did.
- 13:11Speaker 3: Yeah, So with my schedule, once I'm done here at
- 13:14Speaker 3: noon every day, the rest of my day is pretty flexible.
- 13:17Speaker 3: I can I can go over to the other station
- 13:19Speaker 3: whenever I want for the most part, So yeah, I was.
- 13:22Speaker 3: I had the luxury of sitting down. I did watch
- 13:24Speaker 3: a good majority of it. I did turn it off
- 13:27Speaker 3: late because I knew France just wasn't gonna make it happen.
- 13:30Speaker 3: But I thought it was very entertaining. It did not
- 13:32Speaker 3: go the way I thought it would, like you alluded to,
- 13:35Speaker 3: I was clearly on France. I thought France was the
- 13:38Speaker 3: best team in the country or in the world. But
- 13:41Speaker 3: when you get to this stage of the World Cup
- 13:43Speaker 3: and you have the top four teams out there, some
- 13:46Speaker 3: crazy stuff could happen. And that's necessarily not even all
- 13:50Speaker 3: that crazy, right, because Spain's I think the number three
- 13:53Speaker 3: team in the world, So I wasn't necessarily shocked. Now
- 13:58Speaker 3: today I feel the exact same way about Argentina as
- 14:01Speaker 3: I did about France.
- 14:03Speaker 1: So what am I gonna do? Michael?
- 14:04Speaker 2: I'm gonna say England wins today? Oh you are, so
- 14:08Speaker 2: I'm going all out on Argentina. I'm just telling you.
- 14:11Speaker 2: Oh yeah, Bet. Everybody listening to this ridiculous show bet Argentina, Okay,
- 14:16Speaker 2: because Justin said he's going with England, and I'm right there.
- 14:19Speaker 1: I listen.
- 14:21Speaker 2: I think it's this Potentially they're saying is gonna be
- 14:24Speaker 2: Messi's last World Cup. So don't you I'm curious knowing
- 14:30Speaker 2: something like that. To me, I'd go with Argentina. But
- 14:34Speaker 2: you're going with England. Why are you going with England?
- 14:36Speaker 1: Because I've been wrong so often?
- 14:41Speaker 2: Well, wait, in your heart, then you in your mind,
- 14:44Speaker 2: you really think Argentina is gonna win?
- 14:47Speaker 1: I do.
- 14:49Speaker 2: I don't think they'll win at all, but I think
- 14:50Speaker 2: they win. See that makes me concerned. Which way do
- 14:53Speaker 2: I take the Justin prediction? Well, now you've got me, Sinre,
- 14:58Speaker 2: You've got me in my own head now, and now
- 15:00Speaker 2: I don't know what I actually feel.
- 15:04Speaker 1: Damn you.
- 15:06Speaker 2: Well, I listen when it's an insincere pick, then you
- 15:11Speaker 2: go the other route. So now I need to know
- 15:14Speaker 2: which one are you sincere about winning this game, because
- 15:17Speaker 2: that's who I want to bet against.
- 15:20Speaker 1: So you've messed me up.
- 15:22Speaker 3: Now again, you've completely messed me up because I okay,
- 15:26Speaker 3: after yesterday's result, my mind immediately went to, well, I
- 15:30Speaker 3: think Argentina's gonna win tomorrow, so that probably means that
- 15:34Speaker 3: England's gonna win. And now I have no idea. I
- 15:37Speaker 3: wouldn't be surprised either way if either one of these
- 15:40Speaker 3: teams advanced, because they're they're both pretty dang good.
- 15:43Speaker 1: Oh, all four of these teams between Spain, who is it? Yes? Uh, Spain, France,
- 15:50Speaker 1: Argentina and England.
- 15:53Speaker 2: Those are the fourth It's the first time ever in
- 15:56Speaker 2: the history that all the best teams have actually made
- 15:59Speaker 2: it to far. So does that make the United States
- 16:04Speaker 2: host the greatest World Cup that they've that's ever happened?
- 16:12Speaker 1: That?
- 16:12Speaker 3: I don't know because I haven't I haven't watched them all.
- 16:15Speaker 3: But this has been a good one. It's I've really
- 16:18Speaker 3: enjoyed this World Cup and it makes me sad that
- 16:22Speaker 3: less than a week it's all gonna be over.
- 16:25Speaker 2: Yeah, and you know, for those of you out there
- 16:27Speaker 2: that don't listen to so much, you know, I don't
- 16:29Speaker 2: like soccer, and I have watched all of probably ten
- 16:33Speaker 2: to fifteen seconds of a game. I will say it's
- 16:38Speaker 2: been fun seeing the activity and seeing the United States,
- 16:42Speaker 2: what I think is really shined. Every host city has
- 16:46Speaker 2: done a phenomenal job. And now Atlanta's really concerned what's
- 16:51Speaker 2: going on there because evidently Argentina and England do not
- 16:56Speaker 2: get along as far as fan bases really. So, yeah,
- 17:00Speaker 2: so they have completely separated where fans can go in
- 17:05Speaker 2: to the Mercedes been Stadium, but they can't control what
- 17:10Speaker 2: happens inside because there's no separation of the fan bases
- 17:13Speaker 2: down there. So they've got the local police involved, they
- 17:16Speaker 2: got the FBI involved, they got all kinds of people
- 17:19Speaker 2: involved making sure that everyone acts appropriately.
- 17:23Speaker 1: Would have never.
- 17:24Speaker 2: Guess that England and Argentina didn't like are you being
- 17:27Speaker 2: facetious or are you being serious? No?
- 17:29Speaker 1: Serious?
- 17:29Speaker 4: Like?
- 17:30Speaker 1: Where does that come from? Is that something historical that
- 17:32Speaker 1: I should not?
- 17:33Speaker 2: I have no idea, but that's just what they were
- 17:35Speaker 2: reporting on the news when I was watching it a
- 17:37Speaker 2: few minutes ago. They said, these fan bases do not
- 17:40Speaker 2: get along, So we're gonna make certain that they go
- 17:42Speaker 2: into separate entrances into the Mercedes Stadium. Course, I'm being
- 17:46Speaker 2: very deliberate on how I say the stadium name, and
- 17:50Speaker 2: then from there, because it's not Atlanta Stadium. I mean
- 17:53Speaker 2: it's Mercedes Stadium. And then once they get in there,
- 17:56Speaker 2: they got to watch them and we'll have to see
- 17:58Speaker 2: what happens from that standpoint, So usher in that stadium.
- 18:02Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly.
- 18:05Speaker 2: And you know, at this point, I don't know if
- 18:08Speaker 2: I would want to sell alcohol. Would you have two
- 18:11Speaker 2: rivals like that. Let's take some really big rivals. I
- 18:17Speaker 2: think Jets, Giants are big rivals, Red Sox, Yankees obviously,
- 18:23Speaker 2: Uku of l UK Tennessee.
- 18:25Speaker 1: Don't you think, Man, it's a little.
- 18:29Speaker 2: Scary to sell more alcohol to those types of games,
- 18:33Speaker 2: knowing that that might an inebriated fan is going to
- 18:37Speaker 2: be a little more irate than a non inebriated fan. Yeah,
- 18:42Speaker 2: but I mean, you can't take that revenue off. But
- 18:45Speaker 2: alcohol is such a huge revenue generator for sporting events.
- 18:49Speaker 1: Exactly. You can't go right away.
- 18:51Speaker 3: You have to go into these things with the assumption
- 18:55Speaker 3: that everybody's going to be a grown up we're all
- 18:57Speaker 3: gonna be able to handle our liquor now we I mean,
- 19:00Speaker 3: that's not gonna happen. We know that's not gonna happen.
- 19:02Speaker 3: But that's right, that's kind of the mindset you got
- 19:04Speaker 3: to go in with.
- 19:04Speaker 2: Right, Yes it is, but I mean it just it
- 19:09Speaker 2: makes it really tough. So all right, we gotta take
- 19:11Speaker 2: our first break. If you want to call in five
- 19:13Speaker 2: O two three four fourteen fifty, you want a text
- 19:15Speaker 2: in on the whiskey peach text sign and we'll get
- 19:17Speaker 2: to those text as soon as we get back from break.
- 19:19Speaker 2: Five oh two four one four fourteen fifteen and tweet
- 19:21Speaker 2: me at just the Cat Radio, stay right there. We
- 19:24Speaker 2: got a lot more Just the Cats come out, plus
- 19:27Speaker 2: Coach Tubby Smith.
- 19:28Speaker 1: That's going to be with us. We'll see in a minute.
- 19:30Speaker 5: This is just a long time. You're coming from Wady
- 19:34Speaker 5: and you come from coming from from.
- 19:57Speaker 2: O.
- 20:08Speaker 6: He got judging.
- 20:09Speaker 1: I'm telling you right now, that's only song.
- 20:11Speaker 2: This guy happens, the only song anybody America knows.
- 20:15Speaker 1: This one song. And the dude is laughing his way
- 20:18Speaker 1: to the bank. What a horrible song. Oh that is
- 20:21Speaker 1: a horrible take.
- 20:22Speaker 2: No it's not, Yes, it is not. I don't even
- 20:25Speaker 2: know the guy's name, sig and it's what SI? That's it?
- 20:31Speaker 2: Just s I psy? Oh P How was I suppose
- 20:35Speaker 2: it's POSSI, then don't tell me it's sides PISSI. Oh
- 20:39Speaker 2: my gosh, that sounds awfully close to something else. So
- 20:42Speaker 2: sorry about that. Uh but all right. Uh, let's get
- 20:45Speaker 2: to a couple of texts here, because they're starting to pilot.
- 20:48Speaker 1: And I really appreciate that.
- 20:49Speaker 2: Five O two three eight four fourteen fifty you want
- 20:51Speaker 2: to call or if you want to text, it on whiskey.
- 20:53Speaker 2: If you text on you've got five O two four
- 20:56Speaker 2: one four for fourteen fifteen. Text me or tweet me
- 20:59Speaker 2: at just the Cat video. Hey Michael, this is Darryl
- 21:04Speaker 2: Good from Paducah. That's the guy from yesterday.
- 21:08Speaker 1: I couldn't remember his name.
- 21:09Speaker 2: Darryl Good. Thank you very much for talking about my album. Yes,
- 21:13Speaker 2: it's a Christian rock album. It's called I Can't but
- 21:15Speaker 2: I I can't, But I know a guy.
- 21:19Speaker 1: I've said that many times. Scoots.
- 21:21Speaker 2: Feel free to play a song from it. It's available
- 21:24Speaker 2: on all platforms, including YouTube. I recommend a song called Risen,
- 21:27Speaker 2: So there you go. Daryl Good is who I was
- 21:29Speaker 2: talking about. Yes, nice Scott. I remember meeting him years ago.
- 21:33Speaker 2: We did a remote down in Paducah at a golf course,
- 21:38Speaker 2: which was a lot of fun. Had a loyal listener
- 21:40Speaker 2: down there that ran a golf course down there. He
- 21:43Speaker 2: invited me to come do the show. Larry Vaught was
- 21:46Speaker 2: with me, and Larry and I did the show from there.
- 21:48Speaker 2: It was a lot of fun, and I met Darryl
- 21:52Speaker 2: at that event. Hopefully, listen, I'd love for us. You
- 21:57Speaker 2: and me did our two year invert. We should have
- 22:00Speaker 2: on something together. But as far as some kind of
- 22:02Speaker 2: a celebration, we need to start doing more remotes. Wow,
- 22:06Speaker 2: we haven't done a single one in two years, and
- 22:08Speaker 2: we got to figure out that.
- 22:09Speaker 3: I will give you a call later because we have
- 22:13Speaker 3: a potential.
- 22:15Speaker 2: Oh really, I'll tell you more, and you you, I
- 22:20Speaker 2: don't want, I don't wanna. I don't want to mention
- 22:21Speaker 2: anything here. Oh you don't.
- 22:24Speaker 1: Okay, we can potentially have one coming up.
- 22:27Speaker 2: Oh really interesting. Okay, but listen, Michael Bennett loves potential,
- 22:32Speaker 2: because that's I am. I am all about potential. That's
- 22:35Speaker 2: what I told my first boss. I am potential right here.
- 22:38Speaker 2: Uh yeah, And then that night, in the middle of
- 22:42Speaker 2: the night, he made me after I was hired, made
- 22:44Speaker 2: me go teach nurses at the University of Tennessee Hospital
- 22:49Speaker 2: how to put patient restraints on beds and lock the
- 22:53Speaker 2: patients down. You know what patient restraints are is when
- 22:56Speaker 2: you put it's like handcuffs, except they're made on material
- 22:59Speaker 2: and so patients can't take their IV out or anything
- 23:02Speaker 2: like that. And finally, the last nurse me says, uh,
- 23:06Speaker 2: mister Bennett, I realize this is your first time doing this,
- 23:10Speaker 2: but I've been in nursing for over thirty years. I
- 23:13Speaker 2: know what I'm doing. You don't need to explain it
- 23:15Speaker 2: to me. And if you call me ma'am one more time,
- 23:17Speaker 2: I'm gonna lose my mind. I said, yes, ma'am. I mean, yes,
- 23:20Speaker 2: I won't. It's just it's just a habit for me.
- 23:23Speaker 2: Some people don't like to be called yes sir, yes, ma'am.
- 23:27Speaker 2: It's they say it makes them feel old. And I'm
- 23:30Speaker 2: not trying to make you feel old. It's just it's
- 23:33Speaker 2: just something I was brought up on all my life. Yeah,
- 23:35Speaker 2: I've never associated it with old. I've always associated it
- 23:38Speaker 2: with respect. Yeah, exactly. It has nothing to do with age,
- 23:42Speaker 2: but man, there are more. And it sounds like I'm
- 23:46Speaker 2: picking on women, but I'm not. But there are more
- 23:48Speaker 2: women out there. They're somewhat offended by people saying yes, ma'am,
- 23:55Speaker 2: and I'm kind of surprised by that.
- 23:57Speaker 1: I just I don't trying to be nice.
- 23:59Speaker 2: But anyway, John here, Hey Michael, I agree with your
- 24:05Speaker 2: food takes on cross talk with Justin this morning.
- 24:08Speaker 1: This is going to be a great show today.
- 24:10Speaker 2: I know you will ask Coach Smith about the comments
- 24:12Speaker 2: about the ninety eight championship team, especially the comment it
- 24:17Speaker 2: was coach Patino's players. I cannot wait to hear the interview.
- 24:20Speaker 2: I will be watching. Happy anniversary, guys. Got to go
- 24:23Speaker 2: talk to you later. Yes, I do have some ninety
- 24:26Speaker 2: eight questions regarding that thing, right there, John, So good call.
- 24:30Speaker 2: I'm looking forward to talking about the ninety eight team.
- 24:32Speaker 2: And is he offended by fans that say, hey, that
- 24:37Speaker 2: was more Rick Patino's team than not. I think there's
- 24:41Speaker 2: a very nice way to say it without offending Tubby Smith,
- 24:46Speaker 2: because I still think there was more pressure on Tubby
- 24:50Speaker 2: Smith that season, probably more than any other year, because
- 24:55Speaker 2: he's following up his former boss and he's now at
- 25:00Speaker 2: the the University of Kentucky, who had just come off
- 25:04Speaker 2: a national title run in ninety seven, a title win
- 25:08Speaker 2: in ninety six. I mean, that's got to be really
- 25:12Speaker 2: hard to follow. I can think of all the coaches
- 25:15Speaker 2: out there. I mean, it must have been exceptionally hard
- 25:18Speaker 2: to follow Bear Bryant, it must be exceptionally hard to follow,
- 25:23Speaker 2: Adolph Rupp, it must be exceptionally hard to follow.
- 25:28Speaker 1: Statement God geez, I mean, I'm kind of.
- 25:37Speaker 2: The next coach there's Truthfully, you're exactly correct.
- 25:41Speaker 1: I mean I don't think.
- 25:42Speaker 2: I don't think Rick Pattino thought it was difficult to
- 25:45Speaker 2: follow Denny Crumb, but I mean it had to been somewhat.
- 25:48Speaker 2: I mean I look at former coaches and I think
- 25:52Speaker 2: it must be hard to follow those coaches. I bet
- 25:54Speaker 2: it was hard for Mark Pope to follow John Caliperry.
- 25:58Speaker 2: They think of the success that cal had at Kentucky.
- 26:01Speaker 2: Now the last few years it wasn't, but it's still
- 26:04Speaker 2: is very difficult when you have a dynamic, outspoken coach
- 26:08Speaker 2: like that who's getting all the greatest recruits in the
- 26:12Speaker 2: country and follow up that. I mean, that's got to
- 26:16Speaker 2: be really difficult. I'm trying to think who else in
- 26:21Speaker 2: the NFL. I could probably Bill Belichick would be a
- 26:23Speaker 2: good one. Yeah, it's got.
- 26:24Speaker 1: To be really hard. Andy who's the Chiefs coach? Andy Reid?
- 26:30Speaker 1: Andy Reid.
- 26:31Speaker 2: I bet it will be hard following up him basketball.
- 26:36Speaker 2: I bet it was hard following up pat Riley. H
- 26:40Speaker 2: Phil who is Phil Jackson from the Bulls. I bet
- 26:45Speaker 2: it was extremely difficult to follow him up.
- 26:48Speaker 3: On the other side of this, though, a number of
- 26:51Speaker 3: those guys we've mentioned, I would think it'd be easier
- 26:54Speaker 3: to follow those guys up because you've already had something established.
- 27:01Speaker 2: Yeah, but man, it could It could just turn around
- 27:04Speaker 2: so quickly and then people are on your butt like
- 27:07Speaker 2: you wouldn't believe Sure, just like all right, Billy Donovan.
- 27:11Speaker 2: I don't know if it was necessarily hard to follow
- 27:14Speaker 2: up Billy Donovan because nobody really cared about basketball in Florida.
- 27:20Speaker 2: I mean, it's they like it, but they're They're passion
- 27:24Speaker 2: is football at Florida. I think it'll be hard when
- 27:27Speaker 2: Kirby Smart leaves Georgia Vince Dooley, I bet was a
- 27:31Speaker 2: hard one to follow it.
- 27:32Speaker 1: I don't Orgia Kirby's leaving. Did you see the video
- 27:36Speaker 1: of his son yesterday. No, I did not what happened.
- 27:40Speaker 3: So he's I think he's gonna be He's a class
- 27:43Speaker 3: of twenty thirty, so he would be a freshman this year.
- 27:45Speaker 3: But he was in their practice facility just throwing darts.
- 27:50Speaker 3: Oh really, Oh that kid's gonna be really good, all right.
- 27:54Speaker 2: See that's another question that I would like to ask
- 27:56Speaker 2: Tubby Smith as well, if we have time. Did it
- 27:59Speaker 2: add more pressure to have your son play for you
- 28:02Speaker 2: at UK or would you have preferred him play somewhere else?
- 28:07Speaker 2: Because I bet that's a lot of pressure to Kirby Smart,
- 28:10Speaker 2: especially when your son, on top of it all, is
- 28:14Speaker 2: the quarterback. I mean, that is the one player in football,
- 28:17Speaker 2: am I right that gets the most praise and also
- 28:21Speaker 2: at the same time gets the most criticism. Sure, so
- 28:25Speaker 2: now that you're adding that, oh my gosh, by the way,
- 28:28Speaker 2: I'm the head coach and my son is now the quarterback,
- 28:32Speaker 2: is that I can't imagine if maybe one of the
- 28:35Speaker 2: Mannings was a head coach and their son was a
- 28:40Speaker 2: the quarterback. Do you think that would have been miserable
- 28:42Speaker 2: or do you think it must have been really difficult
- 28:45Speaker 2: for the coach. Phil Falmer let's let's use Phil Fohmer
- 28:50Speaker 2: for an example. Knowing that you are coaching Archie Manning's
- 28:55Speaker 2: son and you are under the watchful eye of a
- 28:59Speaker 2: former quarterback in the NFL, and now his son is
- 29:03Speaker 2: your quarterback. Don't you think that was difficult? Do you
- 29:06Speaker 2: think that was fairly easy and it was no big deal.
- 29:09Speaker 3: I'm sure there's hard moments in each of those scenarios,
- 29:13Speaker 3: but it's all about perspective in my opinion, Like, if
- 29:17Speaker 3: you go in thinking, well, hey, I get to hang
- 29:19Speaker 3: out with my dad or my son every day or
- 29:21Speaker 3: whatever the scenario is, then that's the right mindset to have.
- 29:25Speaker 3: But then, yeah, you're gonna have riffs here and there,
- 29:28Speaker 3: and those could be tough to overcome.
- 29:30Speaker 1: But I don't.
- 29:31Speaker 2: I think it would be more fun than it would
- 29:33Speaker 2: be pressure. I containing my career. I worked for my
- 29:37Speaker 2: uncle who was like a dad to me, my uncle
- 29:39Speaker 2: Lou Bennett, and I had more fun doing that.
- 29:43Speaker 1: Now.
- 29:44Speaker 2: Did I get a lot of criticism, Absolutely, because people thought, oh,
- 29:46Speaker 2: you got easy street because your uncle runs the company.
- 29:50Speaker 2: It's like, dude, it was actually a lot harder than
- 29:52Speaker 2: you think. But I wanted to make sure I worked
- 29:54Speaker 2: harder than anybody else and was successful at it. So
- 29:57Speaker 2: I made it easy because of how hard it was.
- 30:00Speaker 2: And then I went to work for my dad.
- 30:03Speaker 1: Same thing. People like, well, you work for your dad.
- 30:05Speaker 1: But it was fun.
- 30:07Speaker 2: I mean I had more fun with my uncle working
- 30:09Speaker 2: for my uncle and my dad at a high level
- 30:13Speaker 2: that I wouldn't change it for the world, no matter
- 30:16Speaker 2: how much pressure it put on me. I know I
- 30:18Speaker 2: put pressure on my dad and my uncle, but it
- 30:20Speaker 2: was fun because you worked for your dad for a
- 30:21Speaker 2: little bit. Do you think did you enjoy it? There
- 30:27Speaker 2: you go, Sometimes it just didn't work out, even though
- 30:30Speaker 2: it's hard work. I just it kind of feels easy
- 30:34Speaker 2: because you're around people that you love and care about exactly.
- 30:37Speaker 2: But but you know, sometimes it doesn't work out like
- 30:40Speaker 2: that that. Did you ever watch Orange County Choppers and
- 30:44Speaker 2: the Tuttles and the dad and the son were constantly fighting.
- 30:50Speaker 1: Stars They're always fighting.
- 30:53Speaker 2: They are, aren't they. I don't think they were arguing
- 30:57Speaker 2: and throwing furniture at each other like they were on
- 31:00Speaker 2: Orange County Chopper. I can't believe you didn't watch that show.
- 31:03Speaker 2: That was actually a really good show, even though I
- 31:06Speaker 2: know a lot of.
- 31:07Speaker 1: It was scripted. I can't believe you did watch it.
- 31:09Speaker 2: So I'm the same way because I can't stand those
- 31:12Speaker 2: reality shows. But I do like Pond Stars because you
- 31:15Speaker 2: had the grandfather, the uh, the dad, and the son
- 31:19Speaker 2: and but they didn't argue that much, you think, So, okay.
- 31:27Speaker 1: He was never happy. Yeah he was kind of grouchy,
- 31:30Speaker 1: wasn't he was? Okay?
- 31:33Speaker 2: One person said, the worst thing, uh the world is
- 31:38Speaker 2: the worst thing in the world is paper straws. Things
- 31:40Speaker 2: never last for a full drink. Okay, I think that
- 31:44Speaker 2: is the greatest take ever in the world. I got
- 31:48Speaker 2: just thinking of see exactly. Paper straws are the worst.
- 31:54Speaker 2: Let me just tell you right now, stop making them
- 31:57Speaker 2: up because they stick to your lips. Then, you know,
- 32:00Speaker 2: once you get a drink for a little while, then
- 32:02Speaker 2: they start diluting, and now your paper straw is getting
- 32:05Speaker 2: into your drink or into your mouth. Listen, anytime I
- 32:09Speaker 2: see a place that has paper straws, I consider not
- 32:13Speaker 2: going back because you know, they have those recyclable ones
- 32:17Speaker 2: and you can tell the difference. They're a little rougher.
- 32:19Speaker 2: I'm good with those, and I'm good with plastic. But yeah,
- 32:24Speaker 2: it's just paper straws are by far the worst. I
- 32:27Speaker 2: like the recyclable ones, plastic ones to go with my
- 32:30Speaker 2: styropham cup. What's so bad about? Somebody explained to me,
- 32:33Speaker 2: what's wrong with starphone cups? It doesn't is that what
- 32:36Speaker 2: it is?
- 32:37Speaker 3: It takes it takes like forty years for styrofoam to
- 32:40Speaker 3: break down.
- 32:41Speaker 1: Okay, how many forty? Really?
- 32:46Speaker 3: That's what That's the number I've always read. By the way,
- 32:49Speaker 3: I did have to call out one of my gas
- 32:51Speaker 3: stations last week that I frequent, right, it got me
- 32:54Speaker 3: a stopped in to give me a soda and went
- 32:56Speaker 3: to grab a straw and lo and behold it was
- 32:59Speaker 3: a paper straw. And they've always had plastic. So I walked,
- 33:04Speaker 3: I walked up to the counter. I didn't even put
- 33:06Speaker 3: a lid on my cup. I just took the cup
- 33:08Speaker 3: up there without a lid, and I was like, hey, right,
- 33:11Speaker 3: you got to get rid of those paper straws.
- 33:12Speaker 1: Next time I went in it was plastic, so.
- 33:14Speaker 3: Well really, wow, yeah, I was always had plastic, and
- 33:18Speaker 3: he I don't know if they just didn't have plastic.
- 33:20Speaker 3: So he went and got paper ones, but then he
- 33:22Speaker 3: went right back to plastic.
- 33:24Speaker 2: So yeah, okay, good, And to me that indicates more
- 33:28Speaker 2: people were complaining than just you.
- 33:29Speaker 1: Probably so because they're horrible. They it's the worst and
- 33:33Speaker 1: past ever.
- 33:34Speaker 2: If you don't like the plastic ones, just get those
- 33:36Speaker 2: recyclable ones. You can tell the difference in those, and
- 33:39Speaker 2: I like them. I don't have any problem.
- 33:41Speaker 1: Now.
- 33:42Speaker 2: Some people say, well, just get the stainless steel or
- 33:44Speaker 2: aluminum straws.
- 33:45Speaker 1: I'm like, nah, I don't like those.
- 33:48Speaker 2: And I never know if they're clean or if I'm
- 33:50Speaker 2: doing a good job cleaning those things out. I just
- 33:54Speaker 2: don't like the reusable stuff. So anyway, all right, let's
- 33:57Speaker 2: go ahead and take another break. I'll get back to
- 33:58Speaker 2: your text as soon as we get back. Five O
- 34:00Speaker 2: two four one four fourteen fifty Stay right there more
- 34:03Speaker 2: Justicat's coming right.
- 34:04Speaker 6: Out op on Cotdam starves coting them starve.
- 34:35Speaker 7: One two three four five. Everybody in the console coimon
- 34:39Speaker 7: that right to the nikast.
- 34:43Speaker 2: Listen when Yeah, we're not on YouTube today, but we'll be.
- 34:47Speaker 2: We will be on Friday. I got to take off
- 34:49Speaker 2: tomorrow because I gotta travel, uh one more day. And
- 34:52Speaker 2: then John Wong, doctor John Wong is gonna fill in
- 34:55Speaker 2: for me tomorrow.
- 34:56Speaker 1: So he's excited.
- 34:56Speaker 2: You're gonna be on with him as well, justin so
- 34:59Speaker 2: uh uh, but yeah, I think that sports.
- 35:05Speaker 1: Kidding. I'm kidding boom roasted.
- 35:11Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly, thank you. I appreciate that, Michael Scott. Uh
- 35:15Speaker 2: but yeah, all right, we can talk sports any time.
- 35:17Speaker 2: I believe I've already talked about, uh, soccer the most
- 35:22Speaker 2: dreaded sport of any of the ones I have to follow.
- 35:25Speaker 1: But I don't have to follow that one. But wow, Okay.
- 35:31Speaker 2: One person said you could ask him how special it
- 35:34Speaker 2: was to coach his son while he played in college
- 35:37Speaker 2: despite the added stress it could bring from time to time.
- 35:42Speaker 1: I think that's a great question.
- 35:43Speaker 2: In fact, I wrote that down because I think that
- 35:46Speaker 2: had to have been added stress. A lot of the
- 35:49Speaker 2: UK fan base really criticized Tubby Smith for saw Smith
- 35:56Speaker 2: that was and that was and and did Saul Smith
- 35:59Speaker 2: deserve to I think so? But I mean maybe no,
- 36:03Speaker 2: you you think not, then is that what you're saying?
- 36:06Speaker 3: I mean, from my memory of that team in Saul Smith,
- 36:10Speaker 3: I don't think he was very good and should have
- 36:14Speaker 3: seen the floor, but that was That's just me.
- 36:17Speaker 1: Yeah, that was the one part about John cal Perry.
- 36:19Speaker 2: I always respected that he gave his son a spot
- 36:21Speaker 2: on the team, but he never played. Yeah, and whether
- 36:25Speaker 2: or not he deserved a spot on the team, I
- 36:27Speaker 2: don't know. I mean, maybe he was good enough to
- 36:29Speaker 2: be a bench warmer, but he never played. So I
- 36:34Speaker 2: respect the fact that Cal didn't do that, uh paper
- 36:37Speaker 2: straw suck or actually make it hard to suck because
- 36:40Speaker 2: they don't get stay stiff. Well, you can give that
- 36:43Speaker 2: straw blue pills what you need to do. So anyway,
- 36:48Speaker 2: one person texted, h Ponatowski can make a ton of
- 36:53Speaker 2: money in the three years at UK and then can
- 36:56Speaker 2: go back to MLB Baseball. That was from the other day. Yeah,
- 37:01Speaker 2: and you're absolutely correct. Ask ask what he thinks about
- 37:06Speaker 2: coach Pope? He has insight. I put that down. I
- 37:10Speaker 2: think that's a great question. And what kind of advice
- 37:14Speaker 2: would he give Mark Pope right now? Because you know,
- 37:17Speaker 2: first year fantastic, we all had a great time. Everybody
- 37:20Speaker 2: was a pro coach Pope. Last year not so much.
- 37:25Speaker 2: I mean, but how difficult is it to coach a
- 37:28Speaker 2: team when you have a lot of injuries like Mark
- 37:31Speaker 2: Pope sustained last year. What do you do at that point?
- 37:35Speaker 2: I mean, part of it you can put on Pope.
- 37:38Speaker 2: Part of it you can't really and I would say
- 37:40Speaker 2: a good portion of it you can't put on Mark Pope.
- 37:43Speaker 2: It was just two years in a row, you lose
- 37:46Speaker 2: your point guard. I mean that's just really really bad luck.
- 37:51Speaker 2: I mean, you can't put that on Pope. Hope it
- 37:54Speaker 2: turns around this, Yeah, it's you gotta hope a lot
- 37:58Speaker 2: more in that than just turning around.
- 38:00Speaker 1: Uh.
- 38:00Speaker 2: Wisconsin guy uh said, you should use U Daryl's album
- 38:06Speaker 2: for show music tomorrow. Okay, we'll figure it out. Yeah,
- 38:13Speaker 2: I listen. Okay, I'm okay with that. I mean, we'll
- 38:16Speaker 2: figure it out.
- 38:17Speaker 1: So uh.
- 38:18Speaker 2: And and I appreciate that. Wisconsin guy Patrick said, I
- 38:22Speaker 2: have this question for Tubby. What made coaching at Kentucky
- 38:26Speaker 2: special for you? Another phenomenal question right there. I like that, Patrick,
- 38:32Speaker 2: And uhh that that that might show up too, so
- 38:35Speaker 2: uh uh anyway, uh, let's go to Uh.
- 38:40Speaker 1: I can't read that, and thank you for thank you
- 38:42Speaker 1: for sending me that. Uh.
- 38:44Speaker 2: Even when Bear Bryant coached the Wildcats, UK was a
- 38:48Speaker 2: basketball school.
- 38:52Speaker 1: Hmmm. That's true.
- 38:55Speaker 2: Yeah, as much as I hate I want UK to
- 38:59Speaker 2: be in everything school, but you look at Todd Golden
- 39:05Speaker 2: and Florida. What would he say, Right now, you look
- 39:09Speaker 2: at May, Dusty May, who was at Michigan until what
- 39:14Speaker 2: last week week before?
- 39:16Speaker 1: What would he say?
- 39:18Speaker 2: Because I look at Michigan, I look at Florida and
- 39:21Speaker 2: I think I think football. But on the other hand,
- 39:25Speaker 2: part of me says, with Michigan, they're a basketball school
- 39:29Speaker 2: as well. I mean they had the fab they do
- 39:31Speaker 2: have some history up there.
- 39:33Speaker 1: They're definitely both. They are both.
- 39:36Speaker 2: Okay, uh, who would be another school out there that
- 39:41Speaker 2: particul Because I look at North Carolina basketball, duke basketball.
- 39:46Speaker 1: I don't look at Tennessee that way. I don't look at.
- 39:49Speaker 2: Is kind of becoming both Florida. You can say Florida
- 39:53Speaker 2: is becoming both. I mean Todd Golden as much as
- 39:56Speaker 2: I hate to admit it, all right, so you think
- 39:59Speaker 2: Alabama more so, even though Alabama has yet to win
- 40:02Speaker 2: a title in in basketball than Florida.
- 40:06Speaker 3: I don't think Alabama's there yet, but they're quickly getting
- 40:09Speaker 3: there with the success.
- 40:12Speaker 2: But NATO's is doing an incredible job down there, but
- 40:15Speaker 2: he hasn't gone to a title game. Whereas Billy Donovan
- 40:19Speaker 2: won two at Florida, you got Todd Goldennetz won one.
- 40:22Speaker 2: So now Florida has won three titles in basketball, and
- 40:26Speaker 2: you're telling me that Alabama's more than Florida.
- 40:30Speaker 1: No, I'm not. Okay, I thought you.
- 40:32Speaker 3: Were, no because I think I mean, I think Florida's
- 40:35Speaker 3: way closer to being They probably are both.
- 40:39Speaker 2: Yeah, I And now you look at Indiana your school
- 40:44Speaker 2: or not basketball anymore, but you've won how many titles
- 40:48Speaker 2: in basketball?
- 40:49Speaker 1: Five? Okay? And you've now won one last ball before
- 40:54Speaker 1: born fair? Fair.
- 40:56Speaker 2: But I mean historically you can look at Alabau and
- 41:00Speaker 2: I would have always said, no, no, no, no, that's
- 41:02Speaker 2: a basketball school a lot more than football. Football was
- 41:08Speaker 2: just irrelevant at Indiana, But now it's it's it is
- 41:13Speaker 2: a football school right now, is what you think?
- 41:16Speaker 1: I agree?
- 41:18Speaker 3: Yeah, okay, all right, I mean I just until I
- 41:21Speaker 3: see some success in basketball, Indiana football is a football school.
- 41:26Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, Buzz texted out, we wouldn't have these recycling
- 41:34Speaker 2: discussions if we could still burn our trash.
- 41:37Speaker 1: Yeah, tell them, Buzz? Is that what it is? Is
- 41:41Speaker 1: that what people? Is that what you used to do
- 41:43Speaker 1: back in the day.
- 41:45Speaker 2: I guess so, I mean I don't know, but uh,
- 41:49Speaker 2: I well, you can still burn coal, why can't you
- 41:52Speaker 2: burn trash? I mean, there's something I don't understand any
- 41:54Speaker 2: of these recycling.
- 41:55Speaker 1: Burn junk mail? Do you you you burn it? Yeah?
- 42:00Speaker 1: You put it in the chimney. Is that what you do?
- 42:03Speaker 3: No, we got a little fire pit outside. But OK,
- 42:06Speaker 3: really junk mail is great for starting fires.
- 42:09Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a great idea. I like that idea.
- 42:12Speaker 2: Forty eight Handily said, Hey, good to hear from forty
- 42:15Speaker 2: eight Handily. I haven't heard from you in a while,
- 42:18Speaker 2: so I'm very happy, Thank you very much. The ninety
- 42:22Speaker 2: eight team was all Tubby's team. He made all the
- 42:25Speaker 2: decisions along the way, and there were plenty to make.
- 42:28Speaker 2: That team trailed in each of the last three games
- 42:31Speaker 2: at halftime to include the final against Utah. The guy
- 42:35Speaker 2: that made the adjustments and got them to the wire
- 42:39Speaker 2: was one Orlando Tubby Smith.
- 42:41Speaker 1: Thanks coach. Yeah, great cats.
- 42:43Speaker 2: I couldn't agree more. That was what was so fun
- 42:45Speaker 2: about that team. Hey, ninety eighteen were, wouldn't it. Jim
- 42:49Speaker 2: Nanca called them the comeback Cats. I guess I don't
- 42:54Speaker 2: remember who it was. I thought it was Jim nance
- 42:56Speaker 2: that said that. I mean, I remember that team playing
- 43:00Speaker 2: here at one Tropicicana Field in Saint Petersburg, Florida. And
- 43:06Speaker 2: here's here's the crazy part. I remember two things about
- 43:08Speaker 2: that game. Number one, the toilets were overflowing. That was discussing,
- 43:13Speaker 2: So in order to go to the restroom, he had
- 43:15Speaker 2: to walk through toilet water. Yes, because the place hadn't
- 43:19Speaker 2: been used at all. They had built it years before
- 43:22Speaker 2: and it had stayed vacant. I I don't know, it
- 43:27Speaker 2: sure sounded like it, and she ere seemed like it.
- 43:29Speaker 2: And then the other part was my dad famously said
- 43:33Speaker 2: when Duke was beating UK and got back up to
- 43:35Speaker 2: a big, big lead, and Mike Krzyzewski started slowing down
- 43:40Speaker 2: the game, and my dad said, that's the wrong thing
- 43:42Speaker 2: to do. And of course, famously, thank goodness, it was
- 43:46Speaker 2: the wrong thing to do. And UK came back and
- 43:48Speaker 2: beat Duke. I forget was at sixteen or eighteen points.
- 43:51Speaker 2: They were down behind. I mean, it was an exuberant amount.
- 43:54Speaker 2: And here UK came storming back beat Duke. And that
- 43:56Speaker 2: was the greatest thing. I love that Wisconsin, and guys
- 44:00Speaker 2: said it would be pretty odd now if you don't
- 44:03Speaker 2: play Darryl songs.
- 44:04Speaker 1: Okay, here we.
- 44:04Speaker 2: Go, all right, fine, we'll play a song, but settle
- 44:09Speaker 2: down about it. Okay, I mean, my goodness, we're getting
- 44:13Speaker 2: this show is funny. The listeners becoming demanding now about
- 44:16Speaker 2: what songs we should hear on the radio. Okay, so yeah,
- 44:19Speaker 2: all right, tomorrow, not today, but tomorrow Justin will figure
- 44:24Speaker 2: some songs out, okay, because he just can't. All of
- 44:27Speaker 2: a sudden they appear and play those songs. But anyway,
- 44:31Speaker 2: how much time do we have? We have got about
- 44:33Speaker 2: two minutes? No, all right, two minutes. Oh now it's
- 44:37Speaker 2: gone to minute and a half.
- 44:39Speaker 1: All right.
- 44:39Speaker 2: I thought it was pretty cool last night that one
- 44:43Speaker 2: of the former one of the All Star players that
- 44:46Speaker 2: played last night, Tristan Peters. Did you see about him?
- 44:48Speaker 2: He plays outfield for Chicago White Song No, Milwaukee.
- 44:55Speaker 1: I didn't see about it. Oh you didn't see about it? Okay.
- 44:59Speaker 1: He used to play baseball for the Savannah Bananas. Oh
- 45:02Speaker 1: good for him. How do you like that?
- 45:04Speaker 8: That?
- 45:04Speaker 1: Really?
- 45:05Speaker 2: I thought that was was really cool. And he played
- 45:10Speaker 2: seventeen Yeah, he plays for the White Sox. Now he
- 45:13Speaker 2: was drafted by I think it was Milwaukee. Then he
- 45:17Speaker 2: got traded to back in twenty twenty two, and then
- 45:21Speaker 2: he spent a couple of months with Milwaukee then got
- 45:24Speaker 2: traded to San Francisco, then went to Tampa Bay where
- 45:28Speaker 2: he made his major league baseball debut, and then they
- 45:32Speaker 2: finally traded him last December to the White Sox and
- 45:35Speaker 2: he ends up becoming an All Star outfielder this year.
- 45:40Speaker 2: And I just I always wondered what these guys really think.
- 45:44Speaker 2: Do they really think they're gonna make major League baseball?
- 45:47Speaker 2: Or is this he said? This is the one thing
- 45:49Speaker 2: he said about it. He said, the one thing that
- 45:51Speaker 2: playing for Savannah Banana did for him reminded him that
- 45:55Speaker 2: it's just a game, and it made baseball fun for
- 45:58Speaker 2: him again, and that's what it's his success with. I
- 46:01Speaker 2: thought that was really cool. I enjoyed reading about him.
- 46:05Speaker 2: But congratulations Tristan Peters going from Savannah Banana going all
- 46:09Speaker 2: the way to the All Star Game. So, okay, we
- 46:10Speaker 2: gotta take a break when we come back. Coach Orlando
- 46:14Speaker 2: Tubby Smith, that's going to be with us, stay right there.
- 46:16Speaker 1: This is just the Cats, A.
- 46:18Speaker 7: Little bit of money, a little bit of by my side,
- 46:23Speaker 7: a little bit of Rino, see.
- 46:31Speaker 2: The sun all night long.
- 46:42Speaker 6: Welcome to Just the Cats with Michael Bennett.
- 46:49Speaker 2: All right back for our number two as justin takes
- 46:52Speaker 2: a couple of minutes to get you Coach Tubby Smith
- 46:55Speaker 2: on the line, but we can talk about a couple
- 46:58Speaker 2: of other things that is going on. So we learned
- 47:02Speaker 2: yesterday why Reed Travis is not going to be playing
- 47:07Speaker 2: on the TBT loft Ameilia team. Uh and it's a
- 47:11Speaker 2: he suffered at back injury. So that's that's just a
- 47:15Speaker 2: big loss for the TBT team. Hopefully we still get
- 47:21Speaker 2: the people out there and the fans supporting this team,
- 47:24Speaker 2: because it's just it's now I'm getting to a point
- 47:28Speaker 2: where I'm starting to worry and what's going to happen here?
- 47:31Speaker 2: So I at this point, I don't know how to
- 47:36Speaker 2: feel about this team. So anyway, but we'll see how
- 47:40Speaker 2: it goes. We'll see if this team can come together.
- 47:43Speaker 2: I mean, it's gonna be a big game on Saturday
- 47:45Speaker 2: at noon. If you want to go attend, it's the
- 47:47Speaker 2: white out and we'll talk more about it on Friday.
- 47:50Speaker 2: But white out noon at a historic Memorial Coliseum if
- 47:54Speaker 2: you want to head over there. I know Corey Price
- 47:56Speaker 2: is going to be there so you can say hello
- 47:57Speaker 2: to him. But do we have Coach Smith on We
- 48:00Speaker 2: do all right, Coach Tubby Smith. This is Michael Bennett.
- 48:03Speaker 2: How are you doing.
- 48:11Speaker 8: Yere?
- 48:12Speaker 4: Hell?
- 48:14Speaker 1: Are you there, Tubby?
- 48:16Speaker 4: Yeah, you're there. You're still there.
- 48:18Speaker 2: Man.
- 48:18Speaker 4: I don't know if you were on a rocket or
- 48:20Speaker 4: a spaceship.
- 48:21Speaker 2: Where you Well, my wife would like to send me
- 48:25Speaker 2: on a rocket in or just.
- 48:27Speaker 4: To get rid of them for me send me. But uh, yeah,
- 48:32Speaker 4: what's what's going on today?
- 48:34Speaker 2: You're in Louisville, right, Yes, sir, I'm in well today,
- 48:37Speaker 2: I'm in Saint Petersburg, Florida, but I'll be in Louisville tomorrow.
- 48:40Speaker 2: So I'm doing the show remotely today. But uh, but
- 48:42Speaker 2: we're Yeah, the show is based in Louisville, Kentucky. So
- 48:45Speaker 2: believe it or not, well, you know this. There there
- 48:48Speaker 2: are just as many UK fans in Louisville. You always
- 48:51Speaker 2: believe that, didn't you when you were head coach at Kentucky.
- 48:54Speaker 4: Oh there's always just there's big blue fans everywhere around
- 48:59Speaker 4: the world. And I know Rick Bettino used to like
- 49:02Speaker 4: being the Yankees, the Bosses, Celtics, you know, the Lakers.
- 49:06Speaker 4: You know, it's just so on that level, the Green
- 49:10Speaker 4: Bay Packers when you mentioned Kentucky basketball, because you look
- 49:15Speaker 4: at the success they've had over the over the century,
- 49:18Speaker 4: over the years.
- 49:21Speaker 2: Absolutely, and it had to be fun to be the
- 49:26Speaker 2: head coach. But before we get into a discussion about
- 49:29Speaker 2: you as head coach at Kentucky, can tell us what
- 49:32Speaker 2: you've been up to recently since you got out of
- 49:35Speaker 2: the coaching game.
- 49:37Speaker 4: Well, just living here in North Carolina, high Point where
- 49:41Speaker 4: I finished up my career at High Point University, and
- 49:44Speaker 4: going to shout out to them because they they've done
- 49:46Speaker 4: an excellent job the last two years going to the
- 49:48Speaker 4: DCAA and winning and beating Wisconsin last year. Their coach
- 49:53Speaker 4: there is and has done an outstanding John Flynn Cleyman.
- 49:57Speaker 4: So we were we're living here, but we're all over
- 50:02Speaker 4: because we have a grand baby and Saul has a
- 50:06Speaker 4: grand child. My last one is only about five or
- 50:09Speaker 4: six months old, and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Gt says, two grandkids
- 50:13Speaker 4: my oldest son and my youngest son, Brian has three.
- 50:19Speaker 4: So we stayed there and he lives in Florida, so
- 50:21Speaker 4: we stay busy seeing family and grand babies. That's what
- 50:25Speaker 4: I'm doing, all right, And.
- 50:27Speaker 2: That sounds like the grandfather life, because I know that's
- 50:30Speaker 2: one thing I got to believe as far as a
- 50:32Speaker 2: head coach. You probably enjoyed that job more than being
- 50:36Speaker 2: a head coach at anywhere.
- 50:38Speaker 4: Absolutely, it's nothing like grand babies.
- 50:42Speaker 2: Let me ask you about this, Outside of winning the
- 50:46Speaker 2: title for University Kentucky, what is your favorite memory that
- 50:51Speaker 2: you have being the head coach there?
- 50:54Speaker 4: Oh, just all the young men, but especially coaching my sons.
- 51:00Speaker 4: You know, there's nothing more fun than that. And we
- 51:03Speaker 4: had quite a success run there with my with Gigi
- 51:08Speaker 4: at Georgia and Saul at Kentucky. Those were the winning
- 51:14Speaker 4: this sixty seven years of my career. So I was
- 51:18Speaker 4: grateful that that you know, that people accepted you know
- 51:23Speaker 4: him and that he was a part of such a
- 51:26Speaker 4: so much success that we had at Kentucky. But that
- 51:30Speaker 4: but I just again he was one of the players
- 51:33Speaker 4: that that that contributed to all the success that we had.
- 51:38Speaker 4: And but you asked me what was one of the highlights.
- 51:40Speaker 4: That was one of the hoighlights?
- 51:42Speaker 2: Well, because one of the listeners texted and what I
- 51:45Speaker 2: thought was a great question because he said, how and
- 51:47Speaker 2: I think you've answered that. How special was it the
- 51:49Speaker 2: coach uh your son while he played in college for you?
- 51:53Speaker 2: But but did that add a lot of stress to you?
- 51:57Speaker 2: And Saul or more so one person over the other
- 52:01Speaker 2: about pretty even or there was no stress.
- 52:04Speaker 4: Well, I wouldn't know anything else because this, you know again,
- 52:08Speaker 4: I'd coach and my sons, you know, and at Tulsa
- 52:11Speaker 4: and Georgia, not at Tulsa but at Georgia. But you
- 52:15Speaker 4: know it's going to be stressed no matter what. Whenever
- 52:17Speaker 4: you have a family member or someone close to you.
- 52:21Speaker 4: You know that you love and I love and to
- 52:23Speaker 4: care for all of our players. But it's it was
- 52:27Speaker 4: more stressful product on his mom than it was on me,
- 52:30Speaker 4: because you know, he was doing everything I asked him
- 52:32Speaker 4: to do any more. So, Uh, it was a delusion
- 52:36Speaker 4: for me at all.
- 52:37Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 52:38Speaker 2: Well, winning the title in year one in nineteen ninety eight,
- 52:43Speaker 2: did you have any idea you didn't you'd inherit a
- 52:46Speaker 2: team that talented or did it feel like pressure from
- 52:50Speaker 2: day one? Following one of your former bosses, Rick Fatita, Well,
- 52:56Speaker 2: there's no.
- 52:57Speaker 4: And when I when i'm I don't mean this, you know,
- 53:00Speaker 4: to diminish the us because there's always pressure, whether you're
- 53:07Speaker 4: at high Point, Georgia, Tulsa, Kentucky, because the coach is
- 53:13Speaker 4: there to lead and then win basketball games and develop
- 53:19Speaker 4: young people so they can be productive, you know, tax
- 53:25Speaker 4: paying citizens. Some day it's a kid. So now that
- 53:31Speaker 4: I'm in this position that they're still paying theirself security
- 53:34Speaker 4: and their tax but uh so, so go ahead, I'm saying.
- 53:42Speaker 4: It was just it was just we got off the subject.
- 53:46Speaker 4: I'm sorry, what were you going to say?
- 53:49Speaker 2: Well, let's well, I mean, was there added pressure that
- 53:53Speaker 2: you know from day one that you following to pay.
- 53:57Speaker 4: My taxes than anything?
- 53:59Speaker 1: So?
- 54:00Speaker 4: Uh so that was that's what I was comment about. No,
- 54:07Speaker 4: you know, I grew up in a household with sixteen
- 54:09Speaker 4: other siblings, so you know, you knew about sharing and
- 54:12Speaker 4: caring and sacrifice. Yes, so, so those were the attributes
- 54:18Speaker 4: and that we the values that we tried to instill
- 54:20Speaker 4: in our players that were instilled in me by my
- 54:23Speaker 4: parents when I was growing up. And uh so it's
- 54:27Speaker 4: a you know, we've been I was very blessed and
- 54:31Speaker 4: gifted to be able to lead and coach and get
- 54:36Speaker 4: a great opportunity. See I'm Newton. I'm a great mentor
- 54:41Speaker 4: a great you know advisor to me even before I
- 54:45Speaker 4: became the head coach at Kentucky. So those things were
- 54:48Speaker 4: precious to me. Just the people that were in my
- 54:50Speaker 4: life and then who had a major impact and maybe
- 54:53Speaker 4: an influence on me.
- 54:56Speaker 2: Uh, is there one particular situ or one particular game
- 55:02Speaker 2: that you wish you could go back and change outside
- 55:07Speaker 2: of winning the game, but is there one particular thing
- 55:09Speaker 2: you wish you could go back at Kentucky and say, Man,
- 55:12Speaker 2: I wish I'd done this differently?
- 55:14Speaker 4: Oh, there's always there's there always games that you replay
- 55:20Speaker 4: and you say I would have done this differently. Yes,
- 55:22Speaker 4: there there are quite a few. I would imagine the
- 55:25Speaker 4: last game, you know, I I don't know that I
- 55:29Speaker 4: would have done anything different, but I wish they hadn't
- 55:31Speaker 4: made a call in the last game that I actually
- 55:34Speaker 4: coached in the SEC tournament and were lost to Mississippi
- 55:38Speaker 4: State on overtime. But that was you a call. And
- 55:42Speaker 4: you know, Jody Meek's on the line shooting two shooting
- 55:45Speaker 4: free throws and they take the ball out of his
- 55:47Speaker 4: hand because of the lane violations something something stupid like
- 55:52Speaker 4: that that costs us in hither and the guy hits
- 55:54Speaker 4: a three pointers to tie it up and we're losing overtime.
- 55:57Speaker 4: Both kinds of games. But there are other games. Obviously
- 56:02Speaker 4: the Louisville Kentucky game is always an intense rivalry. And
- 56:09Speaker 4: and I remember mister Kitele, he would always be his
- 56:11Speaker 4: whole personality would change that week of that We're playing
- 56:14Speaker 4: in Louisville. So right, because I learned how important that
- 56:18Speaker 4: game was to do everyone in the do all Wildcats
- 56:22Speaker 4: fans as well?
- 56:24Speaker 1: Well?
- 56:24Speaker 2: I mean, coming coming outside of the state and taking
- 56:27Speaker 2: over at University of Kentucky after Rick Patino. I mean,
- 56:30Speaker 2: did you did you feel the pressure immediately or uh
- 56:37Speaker 2: just or did you like, Man, I've I've made it
- 56:40Speaker 2: now here.
- 56:40Speaker 1: I am the head coach.
- 56:43Speaker 4: You're always a little cautious and fearful that you know,
- 56:49Speaker 4: how do you how do you follow a legend? You know?
- 56:51Speaker 4: And Rick, you know, had taken them back to back
- 56:54Speaker 4: final fours one one in ninety six and lost in
- 56:57Speaker 4: the championship game to Arizona. So I'm going, ooh, man,
- 57:02Speaker 4: this is uh now, we know we had done some
- 57:06Speaker 4: good things at Georgia and and we were we were
- 57:09Speaker 4: well prepared absolutely because I've been I've been in Kentucky before,
- 57:13Speaker 4: so I knew the intensity, you know, the following and
- 57:19Speaker 4: and the support that uh and the winning tradition at Kentucky,
- 57:24Speaker 4: So that was I was not new so I knew
- 57:28Speaker 4: what I was I was getting into, but I knew
- 57:29Speaker 4: I had I was standing assistant coaches. I surrounded myself
- 57:34Speaker 4: with the right people. I had a great advisor in C. M.
- 57:40Speaker 4: Newton who uh and Martin mcmack and people that were
- 57:45Speaker 4: already there in the program who gave me a lot
- 57:48Speaker 4: of guidance. She was my administrative assistant and I appreciate
- 57:52Speaker 4: you know people like that who you know. And then
- 57:54Speaker 4: a mister Kiteley who embraced me and who had men
- 57:58Speaker 4: I had known him before, so it wasn't very stressful
- 58:03Speaker 4: other than how do you replace the legend and what
- 58:08Speaker 4: do you do? And then bringing my son there too,
- 58:10Speaker 4: that was oh Saul coming with me, and even Gigi
- 58:14Speaker 4: leaving him behind that was probably more stressful than anything
- 58:17Speaker 4: leaves him at Georgia.
- 58:19Speaker 2: Right, because one particular game that that I was in
- 58:23Speaker 2: attendance for that I I really enjoyed. I'd just like
- 58:27Speaker 2: to know what was going through your mind during the
- 58:30Speaker 2: Duke game when you got down to that duke team
- 58:35Speaker 2: in ninety eight by double.
- 58:38Speaker 4: Digits, seventeen pointsman nine thirty to go.
- 58:43Speaker 1: I think remembers all the members there.
- 58:46Speaker 4: You know, what I remember is my staff, how how
- 58:51Speaker 4: especially Mike Sutton, George Felt and Sean and you know,
- 58:54Speaker 4: they were very observant. You know, they outstanding coaches in
- 58:59Speaker 4: their own right, and Ben became head coaches at other places.
- 59:03Speaker 4: But you know, I was, you know, we were trying
- 59:06Speaker 4: to come back and and they advised me. I went
- 59:09Speaker 4: to call a time out because I thought we were
- 59:11Speaker 4: being fatigued, we were getting tired trying to fight back,
- 59:16Speaker 4: and uh, they said, no, don't call the time But
- 59:18Speaker 4: the biggest thing was was the players and how they
- 59:26Speaker 4: accepted that challenge being behind uh, especially Turner, Wayne the Burner. Turner,
- 59:34Speaker 4: he said, coach, you know, we were running plays and stuff.
- 59:37Speaker 4: He said, coach, I can take him. What are you
- 59:40Speaker 4: talking about, man, he said, let me just you know,
- 59:43Speaker 4: And so we set a high pick and roll. They
- 59:46Speaker 4: were with him and I think the Scott's pages on
- 59:48Speaker 4: Nazi Muhammed and and he was went to the basket
- 59:52Speaker 4: and went by I think was Steve Wojahouski at the time,
- 59:55Speaker 4: and and he just took over the games doing you know,
- 59:59Speaker 4: throwing out assists and getting all the way to the
- 1:00:02Speaker 4: rim and that, and then we didn't call the time out.
- 1:00:06Speaker 4: That's what I was getting to about my staff. They
- 1:00:08Speaker 4: stopped me. I was gonna call a time of snow. Coach,
- 1:00:10Speaker 4: don't call any more timeouts. Don't call another time out.
- 1:00:13Speaker 4: They don't have anymore. They were out of timehouse with
- 1:00:16Speaker 4: about nine eight minutes going a game. So that was
- 1:00:20Speaker 4: that was very beneficial to us.
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: Let's see, I was telling the listeners a little earlier
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: that my dad famously said, when Mike Skizhevski started slowing
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: the game down, that was the wrong move. Did you
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: think the same thing. It's like, oh my goodness, he's
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: trying to milk the clock.
- 1:00:37Speaker 4: Well, you know, at the time, we were just fighting
- 1:00:39Speaker 4: to come back. I didn't care what they were doing
- 1:00:42Speaker 4: so much as what we needed to do to get
- 1:00:45Speaker 4: back in the game and repressing trapping force in turnovers,
- 1:00:51Speaker 4: making them play faster. You know, when you're behind, that's
- 1:00:54Speaker 4: what you have to do. You have to you have
- 1:00:56Speaker 4: to generate more possessions and then you have to score quicker.
- 1:01:03Speaker 4: So then we had an excellent point guard, and that's
- 1:01:06Speaker 4: some shooters and Jeff Sheppard, Campbell Mills and Allen Everards.
- 1:01:09Speaker 4: You know, so we got. You know, we had a
- 1:01:12Speaker 4: solid team that had come from behind fourteen times, I
- 1:01:17Speaker 4: mean a number of times that season. That's why they
- 1:01:21Speaker 4: were double to come back cast because not only did
- 1:01:23Speaker 4: we just come back at that time, but we came
- 1:01:25Speaker 4: back multiple times throughout the season to win games.
- 1:01:29Speaker 2: Well, congratulations to being named on the Hall of Fame.
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: How did this come about? How are you notified? Un Man?
- 1:01:38Speaker 4: I just I guess somebody so I wanted, you know,
- 1:01:43Speaker 4: I know. Craig Robinson. Craig Robinson's is a directive and
- 1:01:52Speaker 4: executive director of the NABCS and Association of Basketball Coach.
- 1:01:56Speaker 4: I've been a member of it for forty years, so uh,
- 1:02:01Speaker 4: you know, and then the longevity has this reward you
- 1:02:04Speaker 4: if you just you know, my dad's to tell me, boy,
- 1:02:07Speaker 4: you don't have to do anything special. Just do your
- 1:02:09Speaker 4: job and your job will be enough. And because you
- 1:02:14Speaker 4: have a role, you have Responsibility's ex military World War
- 1:02:17Speaker 4: two wounded veterans, So he you know, he taught those
- 1:02:21Speaker 4: values of hard work and doing your job, especially with
- 1:02:24Speaker 4: sixteen other siblings. You know, he may he assigned your chore,
- 1:02:28Speaker 4: you know, get that job. Do your job first, and
- 1:02:31Speaker 4: then maybe you can help others. But I'm so proud
- 1:02:35Speaker 4: and so excited and honored and truly blessed to be
- 1:02:39Speaker 4: receiving this award. And I've been hearing from people that
- 1:02:43Speaker 4: I haven't heard from him a long time. And thank
- 1:02:45Speaker 4: him all for for the belt well wishes and the
- 1:02:50Speaker 4: congratulatory texts and messages, and thank you for having me
- 1:02:54Speaker 4: on your show.
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: I just before we let you go, I do want
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: to ask you a couple of things. What, well, if
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: do you have time, By the way, that before, I
- 1:03:03Speaker 2: want to be respectful to you.
- 1:03:05Speaker 4: Okay, so you have time.
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: Do you have time for a couple more questions?
- 1:03:08Speaker 4: Well, yes, yes, yes I do.
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: Okay, all right, I'll be quick about it.
- 1:03:14Speaker 2: Is there one particular thing or a couple of things
- 1:03:16Speaker 2: that you miss about being the coach at University of Kentucky.
- 1:03:21Speaker 4: Oh, the people, you know, just the the service you know,
- 1:03:25Speaker 4: you you're there to serve others, and so the people
- 1:03:29Speaker 4: are so grateful and and appreciative. And I'm talking about
- 1:03:36Speaker 4: Kentucky Wildcat fans. You know, you're there to help others,
- 1:03:41Speaker 4: you know, reach their dreams or be a part of
- 1:03:43Speaker 4: the dreams that that have that Kentucky has and have
- 1:03:49Speaker 4: had over the years. You know, you've just got to,
- 1:03:54Speaker 4: you know, continue to reach out to them and understand
- 1:03:57Speaker 4: and that you're there for that that your temporary, you know,
- 1:04:04Speaker 4: and and you've got to make it a better place
- 1:04:06Speaker 4: because you were there. And that's what I felt like
- 1:04:08Speaker 4: we did, whether it was by yes you did, not
- 1:04:11Speaker 4: just coaching the basketball team, but but then being involved
- 1:04:14Speaker 4: in the community, whether it was charitable organizations, fundraising, whatever
- 1:04:20Speaker 4: we could do to make Lexington and Kentucky a better
- 1:04:23Speaker 4: place we tried to do.
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: Is that one of those things you're so glad you
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: had a basketball with n I L and the way
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: recruiting is today, and you're you don't miss that aspect
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: of it, and you're so thankful you coached at the
- 1:04:36Speaker 2: time that you did.
- 1:04:38Speaker 4: Yes, you know, I'm at peace with what we achieved
- 1:04:41Speaker 4: and what we did. But I obviously there are a
- 1:04:44Speaker 4: lot of young coaches that uh and then it didn't
- 1:04:49Speaker 4: end the way I expected, and it'll be coming back
- 1:04:52Speaker 4: to high point. We expected to do what they're doing now.
- 1:04:54Speaker 4: But the very first year I came here was the
- 1:04:58Speaker 4: first year that the transfer came in, and so we
- 1:05:02Speaker 4: went fifty sixteen games and have a winning season in
- 1:05:05Speaker 4: sixteen seventeen games. In the next year, in that spring,
- 1:05:09Speaker 4: three players league. Two of them are going to be
- 1:05:12Speaker 4: fifty your players, you see them mean, so that all
- 1:05:15Speaker 4: of a sudden. Then the next year after you get
- 1:05:18Speaker 4: a bunch of freshmen and for the following year the
- 1:05:22Speaker 4: uh COVID hits.
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: Yes.
- 1:05:27Speaker 4: So now freshman you know, now you don't even have
- 1:05:29Speaker 4: summer school now, so now you're behind the eight ball
- 1:05:34Speaker 4: with freshmen there, they're almost a year behind in development.
- 1:05:38Speaker 4: So you play a bunch of freshmen. I think I
- 1:05:40Speaker 4: started four or five and now you now you have
- 1:05:42Speaker 4: a losing season. Oh my, and the next year you
- 1:05:45Speaker 4: have the nil comes about. Yes, So three years in
- 1:05:51Speaker 4: a row. So now in IL paying players, So you know,
- 1:05:54Speaker 4: high point is high point. We weren't going to be
- 1:05:57Speaker 4: We didn't have money really groading paper players at that time,
- 1:06:01Speaker 4: so uh and being a mid age the way they were.
- 1:06:05Speaker 4: So those were and so I didn't end well, and
- 1:06:07Speaker 4: my son took over and it didn't go well for him.
- 1:06:10Speaker 4: He hasn't, so you know, you kind of leave with that, uh,
- 1:06:16Speaker 4: just a little bitter taste. But but God has been
- 1:06:18Speaker 4: good and basketball has been good to my family, and
- 1:06:22Speaker 4: I am so, uh you know, and the success is
- 1:06:26Speaker 4: just having a peace of mind that you.
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: Well, you know, if there was any.
- 1:06:32Speaker 4: Satisfaction knowing that you gave the best effort, and that's
- 1:06:35Speaker 4: what you know, John, what you said, as long as
- 1:06:37Speaker 4: you give your best effort, that's all you can.
- 1:06:39Speaker 2: Actually, if there was any advice, you know, Mark Pope
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: had had a really good season his first year at
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: the UK. Then the second year, uh not not as
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: great as much as that team was high, but you know,
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: a lot of it had to deal with overcoming injury.
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: What kind of advice would you give Mark Pope going
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: into years three?
- 1:07:01Speaker 4: I don't know if I'd give him any advice. I mean,
- 1:07:03Speaker 4: you just have to be you have to accept the
- 1:07:06Speaker 4: fact that this is what happened. And because he's an
- 1:07:09Speaker 4: outstanding coach, and I was so impressed with what they
- 1:07:12Speaker 4: did last year with the injuries, I mean, and all
- 1:07:17Speaker 4: the other distractions that you can have, but the injuries,
- 1:07:20Speaker 4: especially in this day and time and at that level,
- 1:07:25Speaker 4: really it's tough. I mean, it's uh so I was again,
- 1:07:32Speaker 4: I know his team and I know his his staff,
- 1:07:37Speaker 4: and I know Mark Pope will have them ready to play.
- 1:07:41Speaker 4: I've you know, I've been over to my watching workouts
- 1:07:43Speaker 4: some not lately but back in the spring. So I
- 1:07:47Speaker 4: know he's excited about this group, and so should all
- 1:07:50Speaker 4: Wildcat fans. I mean, you go to n C Double
- 1:07:53Speaker 4: A and win a game. He's won a game in
- 1:07:55Speaker 4: n C Double A every year and so pretty pretty good.
- 1:08:02Speaker 2: Exactly, Well, we have a little bit of a higher standard.
- 1:08:06Speaker 2: I mean, wasn't there a former coach that called Big
- 1:08:08Speaker 2: Blue Nation, We're we're a bunch of crazy fans, but
- 1:08:11Speaker 2: uh but uh, we we want to win every game, coach,
- 1:08:15Speaker 2: And I think you experienced that as well.
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: First and and.
- 1:08:19Speaker 2: I gotta imagine that when you left the University of
- 1:08:23Speaker 2: Kentucky that there had to be a sense of relief too.
- 1:08:26Speaker 2: I mean, you did all you could, but man, it
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: just had to get to a point where's like, okay,
- 1:08:31Speaker 2: I've been there, done that. I feel proud of myself
- 1:08:34Speaker 2: and relieved that that that part of my life might
- 1:08:37Speaker 2: be over.
- 1:08:38Speaker 4: Well it was, it was. You know, transition takes place.
- 1:08:44Speaker 4: Everything there is, yes, administration change over and you president
- 1:08:49Speaker 4: ad you know, so all those things come into play,
- 1:08:54Speaker 4: and so you have to be you know, hopefully you
- 1:08:57Speaker 4: can read the tea leaves and see what's coming next. Uh.
- 1:09:00Speaker 4: And even though I'm not sure, I think we won
- 1:09:04Speaker 4: twenty four games at last year we lost to Kansas,
- 1:09:08Speaker 4: to somebody in the n C Double A tournament Kansas,
- 1:09:10Speaker 4: So it wasn't like we had a I don't think
- 1:09:13Speaker 4: we had. We won a game in n C Double
- 1:09:17Speaker 4: A every year, so we went to the n C
- 1:09:19Speaker 4: Double A fortens. So you know, I was, I was,
- 1:09:21Speaker 4: I was. I was proud of what we achieved. And
- 1:09:25Speaker 4: you know, but Minnesota made a good offer and so
- 1:09:29Speaker 4: were we appreciated them and all the other wonderful institutions
- 1:09:33Speaker 4: we had and the good, outstanding players who had a
- 1:09:35Speaker 4: chance to coach. So no, I don't. I don't have
- 1:09:38Speaker 4: any regrets, you honest, we did. I am, and I'm
- 1:09:43Speaker 4: happy that that. You know, my career is uh one
- 1:09:48Speaker 4: of my one of the things I used to tell
- 1:09:50Speaker 4: the players, all you got to do is last. This
- 1:09:52Speaker 4: longevity is important, fellows. So absolutely, you know, still you
- 1:09:58Speaker 4: gotta stand, you got to stand for something, you gotta oh,
- 1:10:01Speaker 4: and that's what we've tried to do over the years.
- 1:10:06Speaker 2: Yes, and you've been successful at that everywhere you've gone
- 1:10:09Speaker 2: and coach, I just want to congratulate you for making
- 1:10:12Speaker 2: the Hall of Fame. I want to thank you as
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: a part of Big Blue Nation. You were dearly loved
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: in this state, in in this fan base, and we
- 1:10:19Speaker 2: certainly miss love hearing your voice again. I mean we
- 1:10:22Speaker 2: and we certainly miss you. And hopefully you come to
- 1:10:24Speaker 2: a game up in Lexington or come visit sometime soon because.
- 1:10:28Speaker 4: You are mission you guys, be good.
- 1:10:32Speaker 2: All right, that's coach Tubby Smith, and I appreciate him
- 1:10:34Speaker 2: coming on for a few minutes. What a what a
- 1:10:36Speaker 2: fun time to talk to him right now, and uh,
- 1:10:39Speaker 2: just really happy for him as well. Uh but in
- 1:10:42Speaker 2: the achievement that he did not only at Kentucky but
- 1:10:44Speaker 2: everywhere he went and then now being named of the
- 1:10:47Speaker 2: Hall of Fame. All right, we're gonna take a break
- 1:10:48Speaker 2: right now, stay right there. More just the CAATs coming up.
- 1:11:08Speaker 6: Shoo shooze.
- 1:11:13Speaker 3: Shoes, suck it up.
- 1:11:19Speaker 2: Let me Yes, songs you're playing today are kind of wedding,
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: aren't they. I mean, these are the songs that get
- 1:11:27Speaker 2: all the people at a wedding party up to dance.
- 1:11:29Speaker 2: Because there's nothing happy about going to a wedding at all.
- 1:11:33Speaker 2: I don't I don't like going to weddings when I
- 1:11:36Speaker 2: get an invitations like crap.
- 1:11:38Speaker 3: I'm really glad you picked up on what I was doing.
- 1:11:40Speaker 3: So I'm I'm very tired today. I stayed up and
- 1:11:43Speaker 3: watched the entire All Star Game. For whatever reason, I'm
- 1:11:47Speaker 3: dragging today, so I needed songs that were a little
- 1:11:50Speaker 3: more upbeat, make me move in my seat. Okay, good,
- 1:11:53Speaker 3: I get it for me than anybody.
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:11:57Speaker 2: Uh, And I thought that was fun. I could have
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: had I could have had to coach Smith on for
- 1:12:04Speaker 2: an entire two hours.
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: I have one ques. I got a follow up question.
- 1:12:09Speaker 3: All right, I don't know if my headphones went out,
- 1:12:11Speaker 3: if I heard it wrong or what. But he said
- 1:12:13Speaker 3: it on two different occasions. Did he say sixteen siblings?
- 1:12:20Speaker 2: No?
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: Six? Okay? Is it sixteen? In my base?
- 1:12:24Speaker 3: Say sixteen twice? And that's if that's the case, that
- 1:12:29Speaker 3: is an insane amount of kids.
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: Now I'm curious. I thought, I think you're right.
- 1:12:39Speaker 2: I think it is sixteen siblings, And yeah, sixteen siblings.
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: You're right.
- 1:12:44Speaker 2: It's a It is crazy because my dad was one
- 1:12:47Speaker 2: of twelve, and he was one of seventeen.
- 1:12:50Speaker 3: I mean, that's not rouse used to have this drop
- 1:12:52Speaker 3: this this promo on this station talking about how parents are,
- 1:12:56Speaker 3: how women that are that have that many kids are
- 1:12:59Speaker 3: pregnant or breastfeeding for such amount of long time. So
- 1:13:02Speaker 3: that means his mom was pregnant or breastfeeding for thirty
- 1:13:05Speaker 3: four years.
- 1:13:06Speaker 2: Well, all right, so my cousin, my cousin from Nashville
- 1:13:10Speaker 2: is visiting right now. We were having dinner last night
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: and she was talking about how one of our cousins
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: is older than one of our aunts and one of
- 1:13:22Speaker 2: our uncles.
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: How do you that's crazy? That is so?
- 1:13:27Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it's two of them. Two of our
- 1:13:30Speaker 2: cousins are older than a couple of our aunts and uncles.
- 1:13:33Speaker 2: And I thought that was wild. Can you imagine one
- 1:13:37Speaker 2: of your kids at pregnant the same time as you are.
- 1:13:39Speaker 2: It's like, well, it never happened with me, but if
- 1:13:41Speaker 2: my wife was, I mean that's just wild. I mean,
- 1:13:44Speaker 2: so the same thing had to have happened with Tubby
- 1:13:48Speaker 2: and one of his relatives, our brothers or siblings and
- 1:13:52Speaker 2: one of his and his mom.
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, if he's got that many crazy, and
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: he's got that.
- 1:13:56Speaker 3: Many grandkids from three kids, how many nephews and nieces?
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: Does this.
- 1:14:03Speaker 2: When we uh, listen when we would have when the
- 1:14:05Speaker 2: Bennett clan would have a family where you we had
- 1:14:08Speaker 2: to wear name tags because we didn't know who everybody was.
- 1:14:11Speaker 2: Now my dad did. My dad knew everybody there, and
- 1:14:14Speaker 2: so did my aunts and nuncles. I didn't know who
- 1:14:16Speaker 2: they were. But yeah, it's just it's it's wild Wisconsin.
- 1:14:21Speaker 2: Guy said, Tubby, Tubby, Tubby, Big Blue Nation loves you,
- 1:14:24Speaker 2: congratulations and thanks for everything.
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: I think it was supposed to be Tubby tub.
- 1:14:30Speaker 2: Uh and then says, was that Daryl rapping right there?
- 1:14:36Speaker 2: I don't get the reference to.
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: You, the Daryl thing?
- 1:14:44Speaker 2: Oh?
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: Is that what?
- 1:14:45Speaker 2: Scoots isn't going to play Darryl's songs tomorrow? He's already
- 1:14:48Speaker 2: pretending to forget. I got I got it, Okay, you
- 1:14:53Speaker 2: got it? Okay, all right. The Savannah bananas are a
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: sye pop. I don't know what that means on either,
- 1:15:00Speaker 2: but uh syo, I don't know what a syop is.
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: Let's see here.
- 1:15:05Speaker 2: Uh Buzz texted out, I loved Coach Smith's comments about
- 1:15:09Speaker 2: Bill Kitely.
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: I did too.
- 1:15:12Speaker 2: I mean it seems like every coach that experienced Bill
- 1:15:17Speaker 2: Kitely back in the day.
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: Uh Coach hall Rick Patino.
- 1:15:24Speaker 2: Eddie Sutton was the same Waybby Smith. He was a
- 1:15:29Speaker 2: head trainer, so equipment manager that kind of stuff. So
- 1:15:33Speaker 2: uh uh and and uh, I mean just really regarded
- 1:15:39Speaker 2: as as as the.
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: Guy at UK for the basketball team.
- 1:15:45Speaker 2: I mean, Rick Patino loved him, so he was like
- 1:15:48Speaker 2: Bobby Smith loved him.
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: So he was like Louisville's Kenny Kline.
- 1:15:54Speaker 2: No, no, no, no, Kenny Klein. Yes, he was sports
- 1:15:58Speaker 2: information director for you of.
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: Around Louisville, right, yeah, well.
- 1:16:04Speaker 2: That's fair to say, uh yeah, because equipment manager is
- 1:16:07Speaker 2: a little different role from the uh sports information director.
- 1:16:12Speaker 2: I mean the sports information director at UK that is
- 1:16:15Speaker 2: ahead of all of it is Tony Neely, great guy,
- 1:16:18Speaker 2: very nice guy. I've always liked Tony Neely. But uh
- 1:16:22Speaker 2: but no, it's a little different. So but anyway, Wisconsin
- 1:16:26Speaker 2: guy said you might want to learn what a syop is.
- 1:16:31Speaker 2: I don't know what a syop isn't literally never heard
- 1:16:35Speaker 2: of that it's a psychological operation. Uh then yeah, I
- 1:16:39Speaker 2: would say, yeah, I would say that's the bananas. I
- 1:16:45Speaker 2: could agree with that. One person texted and love Tubby,
- 1:16:50Speaker 2: but this photo disturbed me. And oh it shows him
- 1:16:55Speaker 2: showing in l Okay, I get yeah, but he's I
- 1:16:59Speaker 2: think it's for something else, so I don't think it
- 1:17:01Speaker 2: stood for U of L. But anyway, local John said,
- 1:17:07Speaker 2: John here, great interview, Michael. You can tell coach Smith
- 1:17:11Speaker 2: cherished every moment in his coaching career. He has great
- 1:17:16Speaker 2: recall about his memories. I could listen to him a
- 1:17:19Speaker 2: lot more so, could I. I mean I really could.
- 1:17:22Speaker 2: His memory was especially when I talked about the Duke
- 1:17:25Speaker 2: Gate and he knew how many points. I think he
- 1:17:28Speaker 2: said seventeen minutes and nine minutes. I don't remember how
- 1:17:32Speaker 2: many seconds, but he knew it. I mean right there,
- 1:17:35Speaker 2: as soon as I said it, he were seventeen points
- 1:17:37Speaker 2: down with nine minutes two seconds left.
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: He's like, oh my gosh.
- 1:17:41Speaker 2: And I reverted back to my interview with Rich Brooks,
- 1:17:46Speaker 2: who would just give me death stares if I asked
- 1:17:48Speaker 2: something he didn't like, and he would remember, recall everything,
- 1:17:52Speaker 2: and then when we would be off the air, he
- 1:17:54Speaker 2: would recall everything about that game. I truly believe most
- 1:17:59Speaker 2: coaches that were in games like that have burned in
- 1:18:03Speaker 2: their memory, and I think this is true for Tubby Smith.
- 1:18:05Speaker 2: The good and the bad about when a particular game happened,
- 1:18:12Speaker 2: how much time was left, how much they were down by.
- 1:18:15Speaker 2: I was going to ask him about that two thousand
- 1:18:17Speaker 2: and two double overtime against Michigan State, and I thought, no,
- 1:18:21Speaker 2: I'm not going to bring that up, because that was
- 1:18:24Speaker 2: a heartbreaking loss. But I thought, no, don't bring that up.
- 1:18:27Speaker 2: Let's let's keep it lighthearted. Let's talk about the good
- 1:18:29Speaker 2: times at UK and so I and then part of
- 1:18:34Speaker 2: me wanted to ask what did he think about the
- 1:18:35Speaker 2: hire of Billy Gillispie taking the plate? I thought, no,
- 1:18:41Speaker 2: I better not bring that. I better not bring that up.
- 1:18:46Speaker 2: Oh so I would have if you hit him with that,
- 1:18:48Speaker 2: And I didn't know exactly, And I thought, no, no, no, no, Listen.
- 1:18:55Speaker 2: You know, sometimes I gotta tone down the Michael Bennett, okay,
- 1:18:59Speaker 2: because the real Michael Bennett would ask some of the
- 1:19:02Speaker 2: most ridiculous questions out there. And I think that was
- 1:19:06Speaker 2: one of the real Michael Bennett questions. Is like, I mean,
- 1:19:09Speaker 2: we can't ask that. There were a couple others I'm
- 1:19:11Speaker 2: not gonna mention, but I wanted to mention that one.
- 1:19:13Speaker 2: I thought you would enjoy that one. So uh, anyway,
- 1:19:16Speaker 2: all right, we gotta take our last break today five
- 1:19:19Speaker 2: O two three four fourteen fifty.
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: You want to call five O two four one four
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: fourteen fifty.
- 1:19:23Speaker 2: If you want to text in on the Whiskey Thief
- 1:19:25Speaker 2: text liner, you tweet me just caat radio. It was
- 1:19:27Speaker 2: a fun interview. I mean, I'm going to tell you
- 1:19:29Speaker 2: right now, I hope he comes on again. But I
- 1:19:33Speaker 2: thoroughly enjoy that because there are a lot more questions.
- 1:19:36Speaker 2: I kind of get the feeling he really needed to go,
- 1:19:38Speaker 2: and I just I didn't want to keep I had
- 1:19:40Speaker 2: him on for thirty minutes. I mean that's a that's
- 1:19:42Speaker 2: pretty significant right there. So anyway, but thank you Coach
- 1:19:45Speaker 2: Smith for coming on the time you did. Let's let's
- 1:19:47Speaker 2: go ahead, take our last breakstay right there, Marit just Katz, Michael.
- 1:19:52Speaker 8: Possibly get down with the twos and I'm a ladies,
- 1:19:56Speaker 8: let me see it break and when this Sovieja Bone
- 1:20:00Speaker 8: Sami Crow make you in your bag load later.
- 1:20:21Speaker 2: All right, on our last segment on this Wednesday. So yesterday,
- 1:20:25Speaker 2: you're going to do it again. Don't mess me up
- 1:20:27Speaker 2: at ten now, my gosh, man, you've done it once.
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: That's enough.
- 1:20:33Speaker 2: Yesterday, Universe of Kentucky announced who will be headed down
- 1:20:35Speaker 2: to Tampa next week for the Southeastern Conference Media Days
- 1:20:39Speaker 2: for football. They announced that junior quarterback Kenny Minchi, senior
- 1:20:46Speaker 2: safety Ty Bryant, and junior tight into Willie Rodriguez or
- 1:20:49Speaker 2: is I like to say Rodrick was headed down there
- 1:20:55Speaker 2: Monday July twentieth with newly Minchi and UK veterans Brian
- 1:21:00Speaker 2: Rodriguez along with the UK's will be on that Monday.
- 1:21:05Speaker 2: There'll be Missouri, Oklahoma and University of Tennessee. They yeah,
- 1:21:11Speaker 2: they go on Monday. Don't know what the order is
- 1:21:14Speaker 2: going to be as of yet, which school is going first,
- 1:21:16Speaker 2: which school is going last? But I think it was
- 1:21:21Speaker 2: Thursday last year. You're exactly correct. And uh, but I
- 1:21:25Speaker 2: love that it's in Tampa. I won't be there, but
- 1:21:28Speaker 2: the only time it's going to be in an area
- 1:21:30Speaker 2: that I'm close to. A Lot of the time I'm
- 1:21:33Speaker 2: not even there, so I'll be up in Louisville. But
- 1:21:35Speaker 2: I've always wanted to go to media days one time
- 1:21:37Speaker 2: for football. I've gone to it for basketball and basketball.
- 1:21:43Speaker 2: Media day for the SEC is completely different than for football.
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: They put more emphasis on football.
- 1:21:49Speaker 2: It's like, Okay, you're trying to become an all conference,
- 1:21:52Speaker 2: all Sports conference, and yet football is the biggest one
- 1:21:56Speaker 2: you do. It's like, come on, man, you got to
- 1:21:58Speaker 2: change that up. So I don't know, thank you the
- 1:22:01Speaker 2: biggest one, you think, so baseball should be the biggest,
- 1:22:04Speaker 2: by the way, that's the most successful.
- 1:22:06Speaker 3: Did you see the transfer portal rankings for baseball, not
- 1:22:10Speaker 3: for baseball?
- 1:22:11Speaker 2: No?
- 1:22:11Speaker 3: Why so Kentucky is number ten in the nation in
- 1:22:16Speaker 3: transfer portal ranking. Yes, but they are number nine in
- 1:22:20Speaker 3: the SEC. Isn't that crazy? Miami is the only non
- 1:22:25Speaker 3: SEC team in the top two? Are you kidding me?
- 1:22:30Speaker 2: Wow? Well, you know the reason that most northern teams
- 1:22:35Speaker 2: don't do well in baseball because it's cold weather. Nobody
- 1:22:38Speaker 2: wants to play baseball and cold weather. I mean, I
- 1:22:40Speaker 2: remember the day he's hitting a baseball the wrong way
- 1:22:43Speaker 2: on a bat and your your hands are so cold
- 1:22:46Speaker 2: they're vibrating off of hitting a foul ball or something like.
- 1:22:50Speaker 2: It was miserable. So that's why Kentucky's probably the most
- 1:22:54Speaker 2: northern school that's successful. Between that, maybe Virginia, but there's
- 1:22:59Speaker 2: no other school that are really that great a baseball
- 1:23:01Speaker 2: north of that is there? Louisville used to be well,
- 1:23:05Speaker 2: but I mean north of the state of Kentucky is
- 1:23:08Speaker 2: what I'm saying. I did not say Lexington. You said
- 1:23:12Speaker 2: Kentucky is the I said Kentucky, Oh, northernmost stay Okay, sorry, yes,
- 1:23:17Speaker 2: that's me. That's my bad.
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: Gosh, all right, all right, let's talk about this.
- 1:23:22Speaker 2: You you know you were talking about recruiting class or
- 1:23:25Speaker 2: or transfer class. UK Football's twenty twenty seven recruiting class,
- 1:23:30Speaker 2: according to rivals uh sits just outside the top twenty
- 1:23:36Speaker 2: at number twenty two.
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: Of course, you know, are you ready for this?
- 1:23:39Speaker 2: Where they said they sit at number nine in the
- 1:23:41Speaker 2: seczy It is crazy. I mean, it's just uh in
- 1:23:46Speaker 2: course Stein. So far, will Stein has UH seven four
- 1:23:51Speaker 2: star recruits, nine top five hundred prospects in the class.
- 1:23:55Speaker 2: And the only ones that have more than that are
- 1:23:59Speaker 2: Oklahoma with twenty seven total recruits, Texas A and Him
- 1:24:05Speaker 2: has twenty six. Florida and auburner sit with twenty six
- 1:24:09Speaker 2: recruits as well, and then UK has twenty five. So
- 1:24:14Speaker 2: I mean, it's just crazy.
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: That feels like a lot of recruits.
- 1:24:18Speaker 2: It does, but they say before December UK could get
- 1:24:22Speaker 2: some more, although Dan and if they do, they'll be
- 1:24:24Speaker 2: up there.
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: Didn't they just increase the roster sizes or they made
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: him smaller. They made him smaller, yeah, twenty six or
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: twenty five se Yeah, like a lot.
- 1:24:34Speaker 2: It does, without a doubt. I do want to talk
- 1:24:37Speaker 2: about this before we have to go today. I want
- 1:24:39Speaker 2: to talk about it yesterday, but we didn't have time.
- 1:24:42Speaker 2: I Lamar Jackson. Have you seen this where his peers
- 1:24:49Speaker 2: have ranked him in the NFL. Last year, he was
- 1:24:53Speaker 2: ranked the number two NFL player in all of NFL.
- 1:24:58Speaker 2: This year, did you see what his peers have ranked
- 1:25:02Speaker 2: him in the NFL sixty nine?
- 1:25:05Speaker 6: Whoa?
- 1:25:06Speaker 2: He has fallen from number two to sixty nine. I uh,
- 1:25:13Speaker 2: I still think that's too high. No, stop it, I know,
- 1:25:18Speaker 2: I just I was surprised by this. You got to explain.
- 1:25:22Speaker 2: Is it because of recency as far as injury or
- 1:25:26Speaker 2: the fact that he's really what I know, he's been
- 1:25:31Speaker 2: named MVP. To me, what matters more is how is
- 1:25:35Speaker 2: your team done? He's never gotten further the Ravens further
- 1:25:42Speaker 2: than what in the playoffs? Great question, divisional round, the
- 1:25:46Speaker 2: semi finals. I mean, they've never been to the super Bowl. See,
- 1:25:50Speaker 2: I don't think so either. So I look at this
- 1:25:52Speaker 2: and I think, Okay, how can he be ranked as
- 1:25:56Speaker 2: one of the top players in the NFL. When your
- 1:25:59Speaker 2: team does isn't hasn't been successful enough to get at
- 1:26:03Speaker 2: least to a division final or an AFC final.
- 1:26:08Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean it really, it's been disappointing with them
- 1:26:11Speaker 3: having Derrick Henry. I thought when Derrick Henry went to Baltimore,
- 1:26:14Speaker 3: they were gonna be they were gonna be something special.
- 1:26:17Speaker 3: But what you know what they say about Lamar, he
- 1:26:19Speaker 3: just can't win the big one, don't. I don't know
- 1:26:21Speaker 3: what you want from him.
- 1:26:23Speaker 2: I did enjoy this, and I hate and I'm gonna
- 1:26:25Speaker 2: admit something that I'm really it's I'm really struggling with
- 1:26:28Speaker 2: Dan Hurley did a an interview.
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: With one of the what's that and.
- 1:26:36Speaker 2: Let me finish first, But he did an interview It's
- 1:26:40Speaker 2: called Sunday Conversation. Have you seen this with Caleb Presley
- 1:26:45Speaker 2: And it's spelled Sunday like the ice cream s U
- 1:26:48Speaker 2: N Dae. It was fascinating interview and yes, I got
- 1:26:53Speaker 2: to a point where, Okay, I've got to listen to
- 1:26:55Speaker 2: this because, uh, he admitted that he loves to yet
- 1:27:00Speaker 2: at fans more than he loves to yell at refs.
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: And I'm like, Okay, now you got me. I think
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: this is interesting. He said.
- 1:27:08Speaker 2: He loves to especially yell at the ones that never
- 1:27:11Speaker 2: looked like they played a sport, their.
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: Elderly or are ones that are grossly out of shape.
- 1:27:18Speaker 2: They scream at me like they want to fight, but
- 1:27:21Speaker 2: they look like they're in no condition to fight. Uh.
- 1:27:26Speaker 2: This This was an episode of a podcast called Sunday
- 1:27:29Speaker 2: Conversation and it's with Caleb Presley. And I thought the
- 1:27:33Speaker 2: other part was that was hilarious. Is that Caleb Presley,
- 1:27:37Speaker 2: who's a part of the barstool guys. He went to
- 1:27:40Speaker 2: a game at Connecticut a few years back and was
- 1:27:43Speaker 2: going to rush the court and they arrested him for trespassing.
- 1:27:47Speaker 2: It happened to be at a ucon game and and
- 1:27:51Speaker 2: and uh Dan Hurley when when they started talking about this,
- 1:27:55Speaker 2: he goes, yeah, I was arrested there, and Hurley started
- 1:27:58Speaker 2: dying laughing. He goes, I reader, remember this. I got
- 1:28:02Speaker 2: to a point that, for the first time ever, I
- 1:28:05Speaker 2: actually like Dan Hurley. This was a fun interview to
- 1:28:09Speaker 2: listen to. If you haven't listened to it yet, go
- 1:28:13Speaker 2: I'm telling you right now. I'm promoting this Sunday conversation
- 1:28:17Speaker 2: was up off the court, Dan Hurley, I'm sure there's
- 1:28:19Speaker 2: a lot different than on the court exactly. Yeah, because
- 1:28:23Speaker 2: on the court he comes across as a real jerk.
- 1:28:26Speaker 2: But man, I listened to this. I loved every second
- 1:28:29Speaker 2: of it. I mean it was a phenomenal interview. And
- 1:28:32Speaker 2: the Caleb Presley comes across says, well, you know a
- 1:28:36Speaker 2: lot of people think about Yukon basketball, they're thinking about women.
- 1:28:40Speaker 2: Hurley starts dying laughing. Caleb Presley goes, I wasn't trying
- 1:28:44Speaker 2: to be funny. It just made it even funnier. And
- 1:28:48Speaker 2: Hurley says he starts laughing, and Presley tells him that,
- 1:28:52Speaker 2: and Hurley quickly says, I've heard that before, that they
- 1:28:56Speaker 2: think about women's basketball more than that. It was a
- 1:28:58Speaker 2: great interview and I highly suggest you go listen to
- 1:29:01Speaker 2: that right there. But anyway, did you have something you
- 1:29:06Speaker 2: wanted to say?
- 1:29:09Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, please go check that out. Great, great, great,
- 1:29:12Speaker 1: great interview.
- 1:29:13Speaker 2: Uh. And then the other thing I want to talk about,
- 1:29:16Speaker 2: uh the door desh driver. Did you see the video
- 1:29:19Speaker 2: that came from Houston where a lady was trying to
- 1:29:23Speaker 2: make a delivery to a home with her food with
- 1:29:26Speaker 2: the food as a door desh delivery person, and a
- 1:29:30Speaker 2: car came that was being chased by the police came
- 1:29:35Speaker 2: and literally physically hit her. She falls to the ground.
- 1:29:40Speaker 2: The guy gets out of the car that was being
- 1:29:42Speaker 2: chased by the police runs off. She gets up, goes
- 1:29:46Speaker 2: and gets the bag of food and continues to make
- 1:29:49Speaker 2: the delivery.
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: That way.
- 1:29:51Speaker 2: You didn't see that, no, I mean that's gone. I
- 1:29:55Speaker 2: thought that was awesome too. It's like, oh my gosh,
- 1:30:00Speaker 2: the delivery. Yeah, but she just got hit by a car.
- 1:30:04Speaker 2: She has a pretty good reason the delivery.
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: We can worry about that after you make the delivery.
- 1:30:11Speaker 2: Wow, okay, you're you're you are hardcore on that one.
- 1:30:14Speaker 2: I'm just saying the door dash for hardcore. They don't
- 1:30:16Speaker 2: want to destroy their score.
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: Is that what it's all?
- 1:30:19Speaker 2: So even though she got well, she had the presence
- 1:30:22Speaker 2: of mind to say, okay, well I still got to
- 1:30:24Speaker 2: make my delivery. Even though I was hit by a
- 1:30:26Speaker 2: car and there's a guy that jumps out and starts
- 1:30:28Speaker 2: running off, and there's the police. I listen, I think
- 1:30:31Speaker 2: I would still be running laying on the ground. I
- 1:30:33Speaker 2: don't think I would have gotten up and had the
- 1:30:35Speaker 2: mind to think Okay, I still got to deliver this food.
- 1:30:38Speaker 3: I think I probably would have walked up to the door,
- 1:30:40Speaker 3: delivered the food, and then asked the person, Hey, you
- 1:30:42Speaker 3: want to sit out on your porch and watch his
- 1:30:44Speaker 3: police jays.
- 1:30:45Speaker 2: Well that's fair enough. Okay, Well I just okay, I
- 1:30:50Speaker 2: guess so, uh, you watched the All Star Game last night.
- 1:30:53Speaker 2: It was a boring game.
- 1:30:56Speaker 3: But yes, I watched the entire thing. Despite them scoring
- 1:30:59Speaker 3: three the first ding, I decided, you know what, I'm
- 1:31:02Speaker 3: gonna stay up what see what this game brings. Ended
- 1:31:05Speaker 3: up watching the whole thing and saw one more run.
- 1:31:08Speaker 2: It sucked first shutout for American League in thirteen years.
- 1:31:13Speaker 2: They American League wins for nothing. I mean, it was
- 1:31:16Speaker 2: just a pitching duels. All that was the only excitement
- 1:31:18Speaker 2: of the game. Which was scary, especially for my team,
- 1:31:22Speaker 2: was when the Raiz All Star outfielder Junior common Aro
- 1:31:28Speaker 2: got hit by the pitch by that Saint Louis pitch.
- 1:31:30Speaker 2: I don't remember the Saint Louis pitcher, but man, a
- 1:31:33Speaker 2: lot of people were criticizing the Cardinals pitcher and it's like, well,
- 1:31:37Speaker 2: wait a minute, now, he wasn't intentionally trying to hit
- 1:31:42Speaker 2: him and all, this is a meaningless game that nobody's
- 1:31:46Speaker 2: trying to There's no Vendetta out there, there's nothing going on.
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: Now.
- 1:31:51Speaker 2: Do you I miss the days when they this game
- 1:31:54Speaker 2: used to mean something to where whoever won would get
- 1:31:58Speaker 2: to the home field advantage for the World Series. Do
- 1:32:01Speaker 2: you think it should revert back to that.
- 1:32:04Speaker 3: I mean, something needs to happen. I don't know if
- 1:32:07Speaker 3: that's the most fair way to determine home field advantage
- 1:32:10Speaker 3: in the World Series, but imagine it was still like
- 1:32:12Speaker 3: that for especially with the American League getting the win.
- 1:32:15Speaker 3: That is a huge advantage when you think about who
- 1:32:18Speaker 3: you're probably gonna be facing in the World Series in
- 1:32:21Speaker 3: the Los Angeles Dodger. So yeah, yeah, I don't I
- 1:32:23Speaker 3: don't know. They've they've got to find a way to
- 1:32:25Speaker 3: make this game mean something or nobody's gonna.
- 1:32:28Speaker 1: Appen something exactly.
- 1:32:30Speaker 2: I mean, I thought they did a nice job celebrating
- 1:32:33Speaker 2: the two hundred and fifty year anniversary of.
- 1:32:35Speaker 1: The United States.
- 1:32:36Speaker 2: I thought that was I thought it was well supported
- 1:32:38Speaker 2: by the Philadelphia Philly fans.
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: I thought that was a nice job. The broadcast was fine.
- 1:32:42Speaker 2: But anyway, before we go, let me h buzz texted
- 1:32:46Speaker 2: out the Ravens will always have postseason issues because they
- 1:32:49Speaker 2: got worn out during the regular season.
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: They have to play the Browns twice every season. He oh,
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: I see what you did. Yeah, we get it too.
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: So anyway, all right, tomorrow, how much time we got?

- 1:33:34Speaker 2: No, they said play by play. That's what I said.
