- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome, Welcome. It is time now for one on one
- 0:03Speaker 1: with the pro and we have a Miss Shelley Coster
- 0:06Speaker 1: in here and we are on a brand new episode
- 0:09Speaker 1: of the SRIS Radio Show where we connect seniors and
- 0:13Speaker 1: their families with trusted local resources to help them navigate
- 0:18Speaker 1: life transitions with confidence. In today we have Shelley Coster,
- 0:22Speaker 1: senior real estate specialists with the Coster Team, and a
- 0:26Speaker 1: special guest from Eldercare, mister Michael Colaw.
- 0:30Speaker 2: So here we go. How we do it?
- 0:31Speaker 1: Everybody?
- 0:32Speaker 2: Good morning, good morning.
- 0:34Speaker 1: Well this is great, great, great, great great. So for
- 0:36Speaker 1: many of you might not be familiar with Eldercare. First
- 0:40Speaker 1: of all, on tell us a little bit about the organization. Mike.
- 0:45Speaker 3: Yeah, Eldercare is just one of those gems that you
- 0:49Speaker 3: find in the city of Bortlesville, and I would even
- 0:51Speaker 3: say northeast Oklahoma. It started, you know in nineteen eighty
- 0:55Speaker 3: two there were three ladies. You had Betty Sammer, Pat
- 1:00Speaker 3: McLaury and Mary lou Bork who said we need something
- 1:03Speaker 3: to care for the aging population in Bartlesville so that
- 1:07Speaker 3: they are not prematurely placed in assisted living in our
- 1:12Speaker 3: nursing home. You know, they if we had a resource
- 1:15Speaker 3: for them or an organization to help them, then they
- 1:18Speaker 3: could live at home independently for a much longer period
- 1:22Speaker 3: of time.
- 1:23Speaker 2: And so those three.
- 1:24Speaker 3: Ladies, you know, elder Care was incorporated in nineteen eighty three,
- 1:28Speaker 3: and so over those forty three years we have grown
- 1:31Speaker 3: from an organization that has in home services, which is
- 1:36Speaker 3: our house cleaning, which is free for anyone aged sixty
- 1:41Speaker 3: or older and they come once or twice a month.
- 1:44Speaker 3: They added the Medicaid advantage program, you know, nineteen ninety comes,
- 1:49Speaker 3: and they add Daybreak, so Daybreak the Adult Day Activity Center,
- 1:54Speaker 3: and then they just saw this steady growth happened for
- 1:59Speaker 3: about ten plus years to where they broke ground and
- 2:05Speaker 3: built the building where they currently are over on Swan Drive,
- 2:08Speaker 3: the thirty eight thousand square foot building. So now there's
- 2:11Speaker 3: the medical clinic, which is a partnership with Community Health
- 2:15Speaker 3: Center of Oklahoma. We have our physical therapy, the Easy
- 2:20Speaker 3: Active Center, which is just activities Monday through Friday, whether
- 2:26Speaker 3: that be yoga.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Or bingo or whatever the case may be.
- 2:30Speaker 3: That's something that Claudia Dilbeck started back in January and
- 2:33Speaker 3: we've just seen that grow. So that's kind of a
- 2:38Speaker 3: thirty thousand square foot view of all of these little
- 2:41Speaker 3: things that we have going on at Eldercare. But for
- 2:44Speaker 3: forty three years it's been this special place in Bartlesville
- 2:49Speaker 3: that has served a lot of folks.
- 2:51Speaker 1: Very good, very good.
- 2:54Speaker 4: I can't say enough about Eldercare and I'm very honored
- 2:57Speaker 4: to just have joined the board get to work side
- 3:00Speaker 4: by side with Michael, Claudia, the whole group. It's exciting.
- 3:05Speaker 2: I also love we do.
- 3:06Speaker 4: I have the opportunity to sponsor a dinner with friends
- 3:09Speaker 4: and it's always the first Thursday of the month, and
- 3:13Speaker 4: they Claudia is amazing. To the whole leadership team is amazing.
- 3:17Speaker 4: But there's different themes and it's just a lot of
- 3:20Speaker 4: fun and it's great to socialize. And it's growing, Michael,
- 3:24Speaker 4: it's growing a lot. So yeah, I'm excited to be
- 3:27Speaker 4: a part of it.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Now. When we talk about the name elder Care, right,
- 3:33Speaker 1: some folks say, well, what kind of care are we
- 3:36Speaker 1: talking about? Well, you mentioned quite a few of the
- 3:39Speaker 1: services that you've shrived, but there's one thing we don't do.
- 3:43Speaker 1: It's not a live in.
- 3:44Speaker 2: Place, absolutely not.
- 3:45Speaker 3: No. There are zero residents at elder Care. I think
- 3:51Speaker 3: oftentimes people are surprised to hear that. You drive by
- 3:54Speaker 3: and you look at the size of the facility and
- 3:56Speaker 3: you go, oh, how many residents do they have there?
- 3:59Speaker 3: But we don't have any, and there are no age requirements.
- 4:03Speaker 3: We consider us a multi generational organization. So dinner with
- 4:08Speaker 3: Friends that Shelley mentioned where she's been one of our
- 4:11Speaker 3: sponsors this year, we have people who've brought their families
- 4:16Speaker 3: from junior high kids up to retirees who are in
- 4:21Speaker 3: their seventies or eighties, and that's just a wonderful time
- 4:23Speaker 3: for them to get out every month. I mentioned in
- 4:26Speaker 3: home services you have to be sixty year older to
- 4:30Speaker 3: have that. But physical therapy there is We generally don't
- 4:36Speaker 3: see children there because that's more specialized, but there are
- 4:40Speaker 3: teenagers who do come. I've seen individuals who are members
- 4:43Speaker 3: of sports teams for Bartow High School come in for
- 4:46Speaker 3: physical therapy, all the way up to again, people in
- 4:50Speaker 3: their eighties and nineties. It's multi generational and we're there
- 4:54Speaker 3: to serve the entire community.
- 4:57Speaker 4: Oh that is just absolutely and just for clarity, I
- 5:00Speaker 4: am sixty and I don't consider myself elderly, so don't
- 5:04Speaker 4: let that fool you. Either it's a lot of fun.
- 5:07Speaker 4: Even for us young ones.
- 5:08Speaker 2: It is.
- 5:09Speaker 1: I can you know, I'm older than both y'all, and
- 5:12Speaker 1: I can tell you that the services they offer are wonderful.
- 5:16Speaker 1: And you can meet a lot of folks who are
- 5:20Speaker 1: pretty much in the same boat you are. They're just
- 5:22Speaker 1: looking for ways to stay independent a little bit longer. Yeah,
- 5:26Speaker 1: it's absolutely amazing, Shelley. You really I did yourself by
- 5:30Speaker 1: getting on the board.
- 5:32Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm excited. I've always been a part of it
- 5:34Speaker 4: as far as sponsorship and to some extent, but now
- 5:37Speaker 4: I get to be even a bigger part of it.
- 5:40Speaker 4: So I'm excited about that. I'm excited about that now.
- 5:43Speaker 1: Shelley has often talked about what we can do for
- 5:46Speaker 1: our homes and everything else like that. You know, if
- 5:49Speaker 1: you want to stay in your home a little bit longer,
- 5:51Speaker 1: or maybe even transition everything but anything. But when we
- 5:55Speaker 1: come to eldercare, many seniors want to stay in their
- 5:58Speaker 1: homes wherever that home may be, as long as possible.
- 6:00Speaker 1: So how do you make that happen?
- 6:02Speaker 2: So there's a variety of ways.
- 6:05Speaker 3: You know, we have Daybreak, which again I mentioned it
- 6:10Speaker 3: started in nineteen ninety and a lot of people think
- 6:13Speaker 3: of Daybreak when they think of elder care. So Daybreak
- 6:17Speaker 3: is that wonderful program that we have that allows any
- 6:22Speaker 3: aging adult who can live at home on their own,
- 6:27Speaker 3: but they need something to do during the day. You know,
- 6:30Speaker 3: maybe they need some oversight with the medication that they take.
- 6:35Speaker 3: And you know, their children are living in Bartlesville and
- 6:38Speaker 3: working or live outside of the city or outside of state.
- 6:42Speaker 3: You know, we have transportation where you can be picked
- 6:45Speaker 3: up and brought to Daybreak. It gives you two mills
- 6:49Speaker 3: and a snack every day. There are cognitive and physical
- 6:53Speaker 3: activities that the Daybreak director plans for the entire group
- 6:57Speaker 3: every day, and then there's just that socialization side of it,
- 7:01Speaker 3: which it is in my opinion, socialization is just as
- 7:06Speaker 3: important as physical activity because if you let your mind
- 7:10Speaker 3: just wander or rest. You know, my grandfather used to say,
- 7:14Speaker 3: idle mind and idle hands or the devil's workshop. Well,
- 7:17Speaker 3: you can give up on life if you don't have
- 7:19Speaker 3: that community to be a part of. And so Daybreak
- 7:23Speaker 3: is just that's a wonderful thing. And you know I
- 7:26Speaker 3: mentioned when we were on the radio a few weeks ago,
- 7:28Speaker 3: Tom that we are starting a scholarship fund for Daybreak
- 7:34Speaker 3: because we were notified earlier this month in July that
- 7:37Speaker 3: the state of Oklahoma is sunsetting a block grant that
- 7:42Speaker 3: they provide for all adult day Activity centers in the state,
- 7:45Speaker 3: so we're not alone in losing it. Every adult day
- 7:48Speaker 3: center is losing that grant come December thirty one, and
- 7:52Speaker 3: we used that as a bridge to help people afford
- 7:56Speaker 3: Daybreak until maybe they're veterans benefits kicked in, or their
- 8:02Speaker 3: Medicaid or Medicare or DHS benefits we're able to kick in.
- 8:07Speaker 3: So we're in the process of starting that scholarship fund,
- 8:11Speaker 3: and we would love to have anyone who feels passionate
- 8:16Speaker 3: about helping us continue that bridge, just to reach out
- 8:20Speaker 3: and I can point you in the right direction to
- 8:23Speaker 3: give to make that happen.
- 8:24Speaker 1: Well. Another, like I said, another great partnership and another
- 8:28Speaker 1: great way to help our community help itself. Cely, it
- 8:31Speaker 1: seems like if it's perfectly with what you're doing as
- 8:34Speaker 1: being a senior real estate.
- 8:36Speaker 4: Specialist, it does Tom and it kind of like we
- 8:39Speaker 4: talked about on the last show. It's when you're making
- 8:41Speaker 4: that decision to move, or you're moving closer to family,
- 8:44Speaker 4: you want to make sure that you pick the community
- 8:46Speaker 4: that works for you, and there's things in there, things
- 8:49Speaker 4: and activities that you can be passionate about. This gives
- 8:52Speaker 4: them the opportunity to meet people to be a part
- 8:55Speaker 4: you guys, some of them volunteers. There's just something for
- 8:59Speaker 4: every regardless of the stage that you're in. And that's
- 9:02Speaker 4: what I love about it.
- 9:04Speaker 1: No, I might not need Eldercare yet, but and there's
- 9:10Speaker 1: where Eldercare is. It's right there for you.
- 9:12Speaker 3: It's right there, whether that be the Active Center. You
- 9:16Speaker 3: don't need to need oversight, you know, Monday through Friday
- 9:21Speaker 3: between eight and five to be a part of Eldercare.
- 9:25Speaker 3: Come join the Active Center ten dollars a month and
- 9:27Speaker 3: you can do bingo and yoga and taichi and card
- 9:30Speaker 3: making and cooking class. I mean, there's so many opportunities
- 9:34Speaker 3: to be apart. And then if that day were to
- 9:38Speaker 3: ever come, where you go you know what I need
- 9:41Speaker 3: daybreak or I need physical therapy. You've walked through the door,
- 9:47Speaker 3: so you've already broken that barrier. So come on, let
- 9:50Speaker 3: us then walk you down the path that you need
- 9:54Speaker 3: to go to continue to live that happy, healthy, independent,
- 9:56Speaker 3: active life.
- 9:58Speaker 1: Oh Shelley you're a great sponsor of our Dinner with Friends,
- 10:01Speaker 1: and thank you. I appreciate that. We've got a special
- 10:05Speaker 1: evening coming up called an Evening with Clay out.
- 10:09Speaker 2: A Yeah, we sure do.
- 10:11Speaker 3: So. Last year Elder Care started a second fundraiser. Everyone's
- 10:18Speaker 3: familiar with the Good, the Bad, and the Barbecue, which
- 10:20Speaker 3: has been going on for twenty seven years. But last
- 10:24Speaker 3: year we started an event called An Evening with Clay,
- 10:27Speaker 3: and it features Clay self. He is the house musician.
- 10:32Speaker 3: He is this standalone entertainment at the Buzzard Bar over
- 10:37Speaker 3: at the outside of Branch and Branson at the Big
- 10:41Speaker 3: Seater Lodge.
- 10:42Speaker 4: And he is awesome.
- 10:43Speaker 1: He is.
- 10:43Speaker 4: He is phenomenal.
- 10:45Speaker 2: Quite the entertainment.
- 10:46Speaker 4: Yes, much more than just music.
- 10:49Speaker 2: He oh man, it's dinner and a show.
- 10:51Speaker 4: Yes, it truly is.
- 10:54Speaker 3: Comedy, sing alongs, dancing, whatever the case may be. Yeah,
- 10:59Speaker 3: it's pretty fantastic and we're fortunate enough to be able
- 11:02Speaker 3: to bring Clay back this year. So that's going to
- 11:04Speaker 3: be on Friday, October twenty third, seven pm at the Center.
- 11:10Speaker 3: So it's going to be right here downtown Bartlesville. You
- 11:14Speaker 3: could go to our website which is www dot about
- 11:18Speaker 3: eldercare dot org, Forward Slash and the Evening and that
- 11:23Speaker 3: will take you to information about the clay Self event.
- 11:27Speaker 2: We are just now starting to get sponsors and we've
- 11:30Speaker 2: got about that.
- 11:31Speaker 3: Yeah, we've got four different sponsorship levels. We've got the
- 11:34Speaker 3: Honky Tonk headliner that's twenty five hundred dollars, the two
- 11:38Speaker 3: Step table sponsors seventeen hundred and fifty dollars, Chuck Wagon
- 11:43Speaker 3: Chow sponsor, these are all kind of fun little question
- 11:45Speaker 3: that's one thousand dollars, and then our Sasprilla Salon sponsors
- 11:49Speaker 3: five hundred dollars and each of those comes with tickets
- 11:53Speaker 3: or a table or drinks. It's going to be a
- 11:57Speaker 3: cash bar, We're going to have heavy orders by the eatery.
- 12:02Speaker 2: It's just going to be a.
- 12:03Speaker 4: Fantastic and correct me if I'm wrong. But it was
- 12:05Speaker 4: sold out last year, truly standing room only.
- 12:09Speaker 3: We switched venues last year from last year because we
- 12:14Speaker 3: were out of room and you know it, where we
- 12:17Speaker 3: were last year was great, it was packed, but we
- 12:20Speaker 3: just needed a little bit more space because and that's
- 12:22Speaker 3: a wonderful problem to have. Yes, So we're excited and
- 12:25Speaker 3: Shelley having joined our board she's going to help us
- 12:29Speaker 3: get this thing going, and it's going to be I
- 12:32Speaker 3: mean it's three months away, so get ready, folks, it's
- 12:35Speaker 3: going to be fantastic.
- 12:36Speaker 1: Website real quick.
- 12:37Speaker 3: Www dot about Eldercare dot org, and then you go
- 12:43Speaker 3: forward slash and evening, so it's for an evening with Clay.
- 12:47Speaker 1: Great Hey Shelley. One thing I appreciate your role often
- 12:50Speaker 1: extends far beyond buying and selling homes. Tell us a
- 12:54Speaker 1: little bit about what you do is if we didn't.
- 12:56Speaker 4: Already well, I sell real estate obviously a nice I
- 13:01Speaker 4: love to assist families and people my age that have
- 13:04Speaker 4: elderly elderly parents. They're looking and just I guide them
- 13:08Speaker 4: through the process. It's never high pressure, it's just what
- 13:11Speaker 4: is that process going to be? Which is why I
- 13:13Speaker 4: think I'm a good partnership with Eldercare because of that.
- 13:17Speaker 4: I also want to say really quickly, I am so
- 13:21Speaker 4: blessed to be on this board because this leadership, this
- 13:24Speaker 4: staff are so passionate and when you walk into that
- 13:28Speaker 4: door and you see all of the activities and everything,
- 13:31Speaker 4: like their heart is so in it and it's just contagious.
- 13:35Speaker 4: So I I highly highly if you haven't been by
- 13:39Speaker 4: just a tour it, please do and.
- 13:41Speaker 1: Also tell folks how they can get a hold of you.
- 13:44Speaker 4: Oh I'm nine one eight nine one four three four
- 13:46Speaker 4: four four, or you can go to the Coster team
- 13:48Speaker 4: dot com.
- 13:49Speaker 1: There you go. Now, today's conversation reminds us that aging
- 13:52Speaker 1: well isn't something anyone has to do alone. We have
- 13:56Speaker 1: Eldercare along with us to provide incredible support that allows
- 14:00Speaker 1: older adults to remain independent while giving families a peace
- 14:04Speaker 1: of mind. And remember, if this involves your home, make
- 14:09Speaker 1: sure you get hold Kelly and her team and thank
- 14:13Speaker 1: you very much for being with us today on one
- 14:15Speaker 1: on one with the
