- 0:01Acts chapter 13. Let us pray, oh Heavenly Father,
- 0:09our Lord Almighty who reigns on high, God, we get out of our own
- 0:15way, God. We laid down prostate, Lord,
- 0:19like dead man at your feet, Lord, we are desirous for a
- 0:23touch from you. Lord, we are desirous to see you
- 0:27and to see your glory, Father. Let our faces shine like Moses.
- 0:32Lord, I pray that we won't just stay on top of this mountain,
- 0:36Lord, but that we will go and be your hands and feet, Lord, and
- 0:40lock eyes with you and God. Put our hand to the plow, Lord,
- 0:45not get distracted. Lord, I pray against the schemes
- 0:48of the enemy. Lord, I pray that this time
- 0:51we'll be holy, Lord, because you are in the midst, Lord, You are
- 0:56on every page. And so, God, as we open up your
- 1:00word today and as we study it, Lord, and as it's spoken aloud,
- 1:05let it reverberate through the rafters and into the community
- 1:09and into the world at large, God, every continent, every
- 1:15people group and every language. God, I pray that your word would
- 1:18go out to the masses, Lord. And I pray that you'll call your
- 1:22people home, the ones that are called by your name, Jesus
- 1:28Christ. I pray that you will hearken
- 1:31unto them, Lord, and I pray that they will have enough
- 1:35wherewithal to come in to the fold.
- 1:39Lord, we strap up today. Lord, we armor up today.
- 1:44God, we pray up today. Lord, fill us with the Holy
- 1:48Spirit today. Overflowing.
- 1:50Lord, I pray that as we go out today that people will see you
- 1:56all over us. Let us have you seasoned in our
- 2:01conversation, Lord, let it be your attitude that we carry with
- 2:07us everywhere that we go, Lord, and let us seek out the least of
- 2:11these, Lord, to bless on your behalf.
- 2:14And God, I pray that you'll continue to help us run this
- 2:19race to love you more, to understand these words.
- 2:23Holy Spirit, give us discernment.
- 2:25Holy Spirit, teach us, discipline us, correct us in the
- 2:29name of Jesus. I pray for a sound mind.
- 2:32I pray for sound doctrine. I pray, Holy Spirit, that you'll
- 2:35hide me and hide my words, hide my thoughts.
- 2:38And let this be all about what you want to say to this
- 2:42generation for such a time as this.
- 2:45Lord, we get out of the way and we let you have center stage of
- 2:49our lives, of every facet, every area.
- 2:53God, for our lifetime, our finances, our family, our
- 2:57workplaces. God, our wants and desires, our
- 3:01passions. Lord, we lay them down.
- 3:04And Lord, we count the cost and we find that you are worthy.
- 3:09Worthy, Worthy is the Lamb, and just to be attached to you is
- 3:19the abundance that we were looking for.
- 3:23It was the filling and the fulfillment that we desperately
- 3:28needed and longed for. And so God, we have tasted and
- 3:33we have seen of your goodness and Lord, you have satisfied us,
- 3:38but we are longing for more. We love you, King Jesus, we
- 3:45worship you, King Jesus, and it's in your holy and precious
- 3:50name that I pray. Amen.
- 3:55Well, let's start in verse one. Now there were in the church
- 4:03that was at Antioch certain prophets and teachers as
- 4:07Barnabas, Simeon that was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene and
- 4:12Manaean, which was brought up with Herod the Tetrarch and
- 4:17Saul. So here you see this list of
- 4:21heavyweight champions. These were the ones who were
- 4:25taking the early church and going and spreading it like
- 4:30wildfire. They were in tune with God's
- 4:32heart and mind and you can see here that this friend of Herod
- 4:37the Tetrarch who had John beheaded and who was cosigner to
- 4:44Jesus death. And here you can see that his
- 4:50constituent, someone that he grew up with, he actually turned
- 4:55out to be a mighty man of God. And then you see Herod and how
- 5:03despicable his life was. So you can see that they grew up
- 5:07in the same arena, but however, one turned out to be foul, and
- 5:12the other one turned out to be a superhero for the faith. 2 And
- 5:19as they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Ghost said,
- 5:23Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have
- 5:27called them. So here is a an amazing little
- 5:31snippet that we need to focus on.
- 5:35They were ministering to the Lord and they were fasting and
- 5:41then that produced the Holy Ghost direction.
- 5:47Imagine that, friends. Imagine if we got out of our
- 5:51routine, if we got out of the humdrum rat race of life and we
- 5:57actually sat in the presence of the Lord.
- 5:59We actually denied ourselves of all the sumptuous meals that we
- 6:05partake in on a daily. And what if we were to actually
- 6:11push back against the flesh and be filled with the Holy Ghost?
- 6:16And he would be pleased to give you direction and minister unto
- 6:20the Lord. Worship Jesus Christ and watch
- 6:24how you start receiving the unrevealed will of God for your
- 6:29life. And here you can see that the
- 6:32Holy Ghost was very clear and telling them who would go.
- 6:37So this is the very first missionary journey. 3 And when
- 6:44they had fasted and prayed and laid their hands on them, they
- 6:48sent them away. So they were again, they were
- 6:54disciples, and they were disciplining themselves to fast
- 6:59and to pray. And then here the church was
- 7:03pleased to send them out on mission.
- 7:07Some people go out on mission without being sent, and here you
- 7:11can see that they were actually endorsed by the church, and they
- 7:17were full of the Holy Ghost. For so they, being sent forth by
- 7:22the Holy Ghost, departed unto Seleucia, and from there they
- 7:26sailed to Cyprus. 5 And when they were at Salamis, they
- 7:31prayed the word of God in the synagogues.
- 7:33They preached the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews, and
- 7:38they also had John to their minister.
- 7:41So this is not the apostle John, this is John Mark.
- 7:45We're going to see him and how he is interwoven throughout Acts
- 7:51here. And we actually saw a little
- 7:54snippet of him at the end of John there, but now he's
- 7:57starting to become a prominent figure here in the book of Acts.
- 8:03And you can see that it was their custom to go into the
- 8:07synagogues, and because they were Jewish, they were welcomed
- 8:13in and they would ask if they had any words for the
- 8:17congregation there. 6 And when they had gone through the Isle
- 8:23of Paphos, they found a certain sorcerer, a false prophet, a Jew
- 8:29named Bar Jesus. So that Bar Jesus means son of
- 8:34Jesus. And we're going to see what Paul
- 8:37and Barnabas and John Mark think about this Bar Jesus, 7 which
- 8:44was with the deputy of their country, Sergius Paulus, a
- 8:49prudent man who called for Barnabas and Saul and desired to
- 8:53hear the word of God. If you are a prudent man, then
- 8:57you should desire the word of God.
- 9:00And a lot of us do not have a spiritual appetite.
- 9:04We do not have an appetite for the word of God.
- 9:08We are being dumbed down with all of these short videos and
- 9:15all of these little sound bite snippets.
- 9:18We're being dumbed down. And there's going to come a time
- 9:21in a day where people will not put up with sound doctrine.
- 9:24And you can see it all shaping up today.
- 9:27And this Sergius Paulus is a real person and there has been
- 9:39artifacts that have been found with his name on it to prove
- 9:44this story. And that is the authenticity of
- 9:47the word of God that you cannot disprove and dis credit it
- 9:52because archaeology has unearthed and proven this word
- 9:56to be true. And anyone who comes to the Word
- 9:59of God honestly, and anyone who lays down their hostility and
- 10:05they're willing to come in and at least have an open mind, 10
- 10:11times out of 10 they will be turned around and find out that
- 10:16Jesus is Lord. And the Sergius Paulus, he was
- 10:21desirous to hear from the word of God. 8 But a Lymus the
- 10:25sorcerer, for so is his name by interpretation, which stood by
- 10:31them, seeking to turn away the deputy from the faith.
- 10:35So here they were not even willing to call all the Lymus
- 10:40the sorcerer by the name bar Jesus because he was no son of
- 10:45Jesus. He was a son of the devil, which
- 10:48you're going to see see here in just a minute. 9 Then Saul, who
- 10:53also is called Paul, filled with the Holy Ghost, set his eyes on
- 10:57him, 10 and said, O full of all subtly and mischief, you child
- 11:03of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, will you not
- 11:08cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord?
- 11:11Here Paul is calling this sorcerer out and he's saying How
- 11:16long will you keep perverting the truth of God?
- 11:21And he's and all alignments is trying to get this high official
- 11:26not to listen to the word of God because he wants to keep
- 11:30usurping his authority over him and manipulating him.
- 11:34And that's what we need to be on guard of.
- 11:38There are many people have who have used this word for great
- 11:42manipulation and we need to know the word of God so when the
- 11:47counterfeit comes, we'll recognize it.
- 11:50And that is why it's called A2 edged sword because there has
- 11:53been much evil done in the name of God.
- 11:56And this Alimus the sorcerer, this pseudo bar Jesus is
- 12:02despicable, and Paul calls him out. 11 And now behold, the hand
- 12:09of the Lord is upon you, and you shall be blind, not seeing the
- 12:13sun for a season. And immediately there fell on
- 12:16him a mist and darkness, and he went about seeking someone to
- 12:21lead him by the hand. So you can see this man who is
- 12:24trying to pervert this high official from hearing the Word
- 12:31of God, the authentic, pure Word of God.
- 12:35And here God strikes him with blindness, so much so that he
- 12:39has to ask somebody to lead him. 12 Then the deputy, when he saw
- 12:47what was done, he believed, being astonished at the doctrine
- 12:51of the Lord. We should be astonished by the
- 12:53doctrine of the Lord. It is life and life abundant.
- 12:57And of course he believed when he saw old Elimus be confounded,
- 13:01this mighty man that he saw in his eyes as being someone with a
- 13:06lot of power. But because he was a prudent
- 13:10man, this deputy, he sought the word of the Lord.
- 13:17And the word of the Lord never returns void and is profitable.
- 13:21And as the word of the Lord washed over him, he came to his
- 13:26senses and saw that Jesus is Lord. 13 Now when Paul and his
- 13:35company loosed from Paphos, they came to Purga and Pampla, and
- 13:41John, departing from them, returned to Jerusalem.
- 13:44We're not told here why John Mark departed from them.
- 13:48Perhaps he was homesick. But we're going to find out how
- 13:51Paul thought about this little departure later on in the book
- 13:54of Acts. Stay tuned till next time. 14
- 13:58But when they departed from Purga, they came to Antioch in
- 14:03Pisidia and went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day and
- 14:07sat down. So here what you're going to
- 14:09have to understand is the son of one of Alexander the Great's
- 14:18generals had a fascination of building all kinds of cities by
- 14:24the name of his father, Antioch. And Antiochus Epiphanes is a
- 14:31descendant of this Antioch. But you need to know that this
- 14:35city that is mentioned is not the same city that was Antioch
- 14:40in Syria. This is Antioch of Pisidia.
- 14:46And here they go into the synagogue, and they're going to
- 14:50teach. 15 And after the reading of the law and the prophets, the
- 14:54rulers of the synagogue sent unto them, saying, You men and
- 14:58brethren, if you have any word of exhortation for the people,
- 15:02say on. Of course they were invited to
- 15:05say on. They were esteemed guests
- 15:07because Paul was of the school of Gamaliel.
- 15:11He was a Pharisee of the Pharisees, perhaps on the
- 15:14Sanhedrin, and they were honored to have them in their midst, but
- 15:18they weren't ready for the message. 16 Then Paul stood up
- 15:24and beckoning with his hand said, Men of Israel, and you
- 15:31that fear God give audience. So here for any of you who are
- 15:37new to the faith, new to the Bible, this is your first time
- 15:41through. I would recommend you always
- 15:44start in the book of Matthew because the New Testament from
- 15:48Matthew to Revelation is milk for the new believer.
- 15:53And then from Genesis to Malachi is meat.
- 15:57But you got to get off the bottle before you can start
- 16:00chewing the meat. And here Paul is about to give
- 16:04us, especially the new believers.
- 16:07He's going to give you in just a very short little snippet, he's
- 16:13going to give you the entirety of the history of the Jews.
- 16:18He's going to talk about from Genesis to Malachi.
- 16:22He's going to paint a picture all the way to Christ.
- 16:25So lock in. If you've never read the Old
- 16:28Testament, he's going to give you a snapshot of what we will
- 16:34be reading when we get to Genesis.
- 16:37So let's lock in. Let's pay attention.
- 16:39Know that all these places and names have supreme importance.
- 16:47Give audience all you that fear God. 17 The God of this people
- 16:54of Israel chose our fathers, and exalted the people when they
- 16:59dwelt as strangers in the land of Egypt, and with a high arm
- 17:03brought he them out of it. 18 and about the time of 40 years
- 17:09suffered he their manners in the wilderness. 19 And when he had
- 17:14destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, he divided their
- 17:18land to them by lot. 20 And after that he gave unto them
- 17:23Judges about the space of 450 years, until Samuel the prophet.
- 17:3021 And afterward they desired a king.
- 17:33And God gave unto them Saul the son of Sis, a man of the tribe
- 17:39of Benjamin, by the space of 40 years. 22 And when he had
- 17:44removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king, to
- 17:49whom also he gave testimony, and said, I have found David the son
- 17:55of Jesse, a man after my own heart, which shall fulfill all
- 18:00my will. 23 Of this man's seed has God, according to his
- 18:05promise, raised unto Israel a Savior Jesus. 24 when John had
- 18:12first preached, before his coming, the baptism of
- 18:15repentance to all the people of Israel. 25 And as John fulfilled
- 18:22his course, he said, Whom think ye that I am?
- 18:26I'm not he. But behold, there comes one
- 18:32after me, whose shoes of his feet I am not worthy to loose.
- 18:3826 Men, brothers, children of the stock of Abraham, whosoever
- 18:47among you fears God, to you is the word of this salvation sent.
- 18:5627 For they that dwell in Jerusalem, and their rulers,
- 19:02because they knew him not, nor yet the voices of the prophets,
- 19:06which are read every Sabbath day, they have fulfilled them in
- 19:12condemning him. 28 And though they found no cause of death in
- 19:17him, yet desired, they pilot that he should be slain. 29 And
- 19:23when they had fulfilled all that was written of him, they took
- 19:27him down from the tree and laid him in the tomb. 30 But God
- 19:33raised him from the dead. 31 And he was seen many days of them,
- 19:41which came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are
- 19:46his witnesses unto the people. 32 And we declare unto you glad
- 19:53tidings, how that the promise which was made unto the fathers,
- 19:5833 God has fulfilled the same unto us, their children, in that
- 20:04he has raised up Jesus again, as it is also written in the second
- 20:12Psalm. You are my Son, and this day I
- 20:16have begotten you. 34 And as concerning that he raised him up
- 20:22from the dead, now no more to return to corruption.
- 20:27He said, On this wise I will give you the sure mercies of
- 20:32David. 35 Wherefore he said also in another Psalm, You will not
- 20:39suffer your holy one to see corruption. 36 For David, after
- 20:45he had served his own generation, by the will of God,
- 20:49fell asleep, and was laid unto his father's, and saw
- 20:56corruption. 37 But he whom God raised again saw no corruption.
- 21:0438 Be it known unto you, therefore, men and brothers,
- 21:12that through this man is preached unto you the
- 21:16forgiveness of sins. 39 And by him all that believe are
- 21:23justified from all things, from which you could not be justified
- 21:30by the law of Moses. 40 Beware, therefore, unless that come upon
- 21:39you which is spoken of in the prophets. 41 Behold, you
- 21:44despisers, and wonder and perish, for I work a work in
- 21:52your days of work, which you shall in no way believe, though
- 21:57a man declared unto you. 42 And when the Jews were gone out of
- 22:02the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might
- 22:06be preached to them the next Sabbath. 43 Now when the
- 22:10congregation was broken up, many of the Jews and religious
- 22:14converts followed Paul and Barnabas, who, speaking to them,
- 22:19persuaded them to continue in the grace of God.
- 22:24There's a lot there. We could camp out on those
- 22:28verses, but He just gave us a snapshot of the history of
- 22:33Israel. He is showing them that Jesus
- 22:38Christ is the long-awaited Messiah that was prophesied
- 22:43about in the Old Testament and they need not wait on another.
- 22:49And here you can see the response they were expecting of
- 22:55them to come back and preach again.
- 22:58These Gentiles were interested. The Jews go out from there and
- 23:03then they try to fan the flame and have them continue on into
- 23:09grace. We can't just enter in by grace.
- 23:12We need to remain in the grace. We need to offer the grace to
- 23:16others. Here you can see this branch.
- 23:19You can see this stump of Jesse. You can see that God had an
- 23:27eternal plan from the beginning, and it pleased him that Barnabas
- 23:33and Paul would be the ones preaching here in Antioch. 44 In
- 23:40the next Sabbath day came almost the whole city together to hear
- 23:44the word of God. 45 But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they
- 23:51were filled with envy, and spoke against those things which were
- 23:55spoken by Paul, contradicting and blaspheming.
- 24:00By your words you will be condemned, and by your words you
- 24:05will be set free. And here you need to know that
- 24:10these Jews were motivated by envy.
- 24:13They saw the crowds and they were jealous, and they did not
- 24:16like that these men were able to draw the entire city to the good
- 24:20news of Jesus Christ. And don't be surprised, new
- 24:24Believer. Don't be surprised, Old
- 24:27Believer, whenever you start making some headway in a group,
- 24:32if you don't have naysayers. But we war on our knees.
- 24:36We fight against the darkness on our knees.
- 24:39We push back against the demonic in our prayer life.
- 24:43People are not the problem, it's the Spirit behind them. 46 Then
- 24:52Paul and Barnabas waxed bold and said it was necessary that the
- 24:57word of God should first have been spoken to you.
- 25:00But seeing you put it from you and judge yourselves unworthy of
- 25:08everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles.
- 25:13So you can see here that Paul and Barnabas are preaching in
- 25:17the synagogues to the Jews. The Jews reject A Messiah, they
- 25:23reject the message. So Paul says, we will turn and
- 25:27we will give the good news to the Gentiles.
- 25:31And aren't you thankful that Paul was obedient and didn't
- 25:35keep trying to beat a dead horse?
- 25:38But the Jews will come back around, friends.
- 25:41They will come back around. And there's many of them in
- 25:44droves coming to the Lord today. And during the tribulation, that
- 25:48nation will acknowledge that Jesus is Lord. 47 For so has the
- 25:55Lord commanded us, saying, I have set you to be a light of
- 25:59the Gentiles, that you should be for salvation unto the ends of
- 26:04the earth. So here Paul is putting all the
- 26:07pieces to the puzzle together. Jesus has already showed him the
- 26:13good news. He's already showed him the
- 26:15ministry that he is to have. And Paul here is saying that he
- 26:19knows that he is sent to the Gentiles and that God is
- 26:23inviting them in. 48 And when the Gentiles heard this, they
- 26:27were glad and glorified the word of the Lord, And as many as were
- 26:31ordained to eternal life believed so that ordained to
- 26:36eternal life. That's this predestination and
- 26:41free will all working together. God gives us free will, but he
- 26:46already knows what we're going to do, because he's the alpha
- 26:49and the Omega. He's the beginning and the end.
- 26:52He's already there waiting for us, and he's here with us now.
- 26:5949 And the word of the Lord was published throughout all the
- 27:02region. 50 But the Jews stirred up the devout and honorable
- 27:07women and the chief man of the city, and raised persecution
- 27:12against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them out of their
- 27:15coasts. 51 But they shook off the dust from their feet and
- 27:20came unto Iconium. We'll end on 52.
- 27:24And the disciple, the disciples were filled with joy and with
- 27:28the Holy Ghost. Counted all is joy when you're
- 27:32persecuted and people say all kinds of wrong things about you.
- 27:37Counted all is joy, for great is your reward.
- 27:41And they persecuted and stoned and killed the prophets.
- 27:46They hated Jesus. So don't be surprised when
- 27:49you're hated. Count it all as joy.
- 27:51And here, Barnabas and Paul, they have the right attitude,
- 27:56they have the right mindset. They realize that Jesus Christ
- 28:01is to be honored and glorified no matter what humans have to
- 28:06say. Even the rocks will cry out.
- 28:08Friends, hope you've been blessed by this chapter.
- 28:12I know I sure have. Praying for you.
- 28:16Love you, see you back here tomorrow.
- 28:20God bless you.
