- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the ned Palty.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Hi. This is Nick and Astasu, story editor on Star Wars,
- 0:10Speaker 2: the Clone Wars and Star Wars bad Batch. And you
- 0:14Speaker 2: are listening to Aggressive Negotiations.
- 0:23Speaker 3: That's right, it's Aggressive Negotiations, the podcast that dares to
- 0:27Speaker 3: ask the questions that are on everybody's minds about the
- 0:31Speaker 3: Star Wars galaxy. I am one of your hosts, John Mills,
- 0:35Speaker 3: and joining me for just another humdinger of an episode
- 0:40Speaker 3: my dear friend, my fellow galactic explorer, Jedi Master, Matthew Rushing. Matt,
- 0:46Speaker 3: have you set lightsabers on stun? Yes, yes I have.
- 0:52Speaker 1: I'm so glad that we've added this setting, John, because
- 0:56Speaker 1: you know, I don't always want to cut off somebody's arm.
- 0:59Speaker 1: I don't always you know, want to you know, have
- 1:02Speaker 1: to behead somebody. You know, it just gets messy sometimes
- 1:06Speaker 1: and sometimes you just need the person to fall down.
- 1:12Speaker 3: You're just trying to get a point across. You're not
- 1:14Speaker 3: trying to do any permanent damage. That's that's a very
- 1:16Speaker 3: important thing. And of course a very important thing is
- 1:19Speaker 3: for everybody to get over there. Go over to your
- 1:21Speaker 3: podcast or of choice, give a rating and review. We
- 1:23Speaker 3: would appreciate it. It's your way of expressing to us
- 1:27Speaker 3: what it is you think of this show, and hopefully
- 1:29Speaker 3: that's a good thing. We of course also have our
- 1:33Speaker 3: mail bag that we get from the nerd party dot
- 1:35Speaker 3: com slash contact. We have a couple of notes sitting
- 1:38Speaker 3: in there that we will get to. For those that
- 1:40Speaker 3: have sent notes, we appreciate you, we see you, we
- 1:43Speaker 3: thank you. We're getting there. We're working through all of
- 1:46Speaker 3: these things. And speaking of working through things, Matt, it's
- 1:50Speaker 3: a fun topic tonight because and I remember in years
- 1:54Speaker 3: past people always say Star Wars or Star Trek and
- 1:57Speaker 3: it always pent in my brain because it was like,
- 1:58Speaker 3: well why not both? Like was there actually a competition
- 2:02Speaker 3: at any point? I don't think so. But stemming from that,
- 2:06Speaker 3: you know, just idly sitting there one day, here's the question,
- 2:09Speaker 3: is you know, when you get down to it, Star
- 2:12Speaker 3: Wars is definitely a clash of personalities as much of
- 2:15Speaker 3: it as it is ideals. So boiling it all down,
- 2:19Speaker 3: which Star Trek captain do you think would fare best
- 2:23Speaker 3: in the Star Wars universe? You're literally through some dimensional rift.
- 2:28Speaker 3: You pick up captain whomever you drop them off in
- 2:32Speaker 3: the Star Wars galaxy who's gonna rise to the top,
- 2:36Speaker 3: Who's the cream that's gonna be able to make it
- 2:38Speaker 3: through in this different milieu that has been set up. Now,
- 2:42Speaker 3: I'm gonna put one restriction on the answers. Cas Okay,
- 2:46Speaker 3: you can't go in and pull some obscure captain's name
- 2:49Speaker 3: from a novel that came out in like nineteen ninety
- 2:52Speaker 3: six or something like that. I would never get we got.
- 2:55Speaker 3: We gotta stick with stuff that's a well known captain,
- 2:57Speaker 3: a captain that that people will have seen. And I
- 3:00Speaker 3: will say it still counts if you go to say,
- 3:04Speaker 3: Star Trek Picard season three, because there's a captain sitting
- 3:09Speaker 3: in there that I think is a valid answer to
- 3:11Speaker 3: this as well.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Yes, yes, wow, yes, you know I'm not gonna pick
- 3:17Speaker 1: that one though, Okay, and this might actually really surprise you.
- 3:22Speaker 3: Okay, the person.
- 3:24Speaker 1: I'm going to go with is Captain James T. Kirk
- 3:29Speaker 1: from the Kelvin Timeline.
- 3:32Speaker 3: Oh my gosh, that's the ultimate mix up. WHOA Okay?
- 3:36Speaker 1: So, because come on, Chris Pine and his portrayal is
- 3:43Speaker 1: such kind of a cross between Shatner from the original
- 3:50Speaker 1: series and the Prime timeline and almost like the Rogan
- 3:56Speaker 1: and the roguishness of like a Han Solo, right, And
- 4:00Speaker 1: so that's why I'm gonna go with the crisp pine
- 4:06Speaker 1: Kirk because I feel like he could easily fit his
- 4:10Speaker 1: way into basically being a scoundrel in the Star Wars
- 4:14Speaker 1: universe akin to Han Solo, because he's a character who
- 4:19Speaker 1: can kind of talk his way out of anything. And
- 4:24Speaker 1: so that's why I really do feel like this character
- 4:27Speaker 1: would be a great fit for the Star Wars universe,
- 4:30Speaker 1: that you could just drop him in and he'd be
- 4:33Speaker 1: able to figure it out.
- 4:35Speaker 3: See. The thing is, it's funny because there were so
- 4:37Speaker 3: many people that pointed out that Star Trek O nine
- 4:41Speaker 3: because you know it's pre Disney buying, you know, Star
- 4:45Speaker 3: Wars and lucasfilm from Lucas, they viewed Star Trek O
- 4:50Speaker 3: nine as Abrams making his own Star Wars movie with
- 4:54Speaker 3: a different person franchise. So I can see that sort
- 4:58Speaker 3: of thing and see how that likenes up. Now, the
- 5:01Speaker 3: thing is, ooh, man, see that's a great way to
- 5:05Speaker 3: throw a curveball, because I hadn't considered that there are
- 5:08Speaker 3: multiple Kirks you could choose from. Yes, that's a pretty
- 5:12Speaker 3: pretty cool thing.
- 5:13Speaker 1: Well, you know, you asked the question, and my goal
- 5:17Speaker 1: was to bring it.
- 5:19Speaker 3: That's well, you definitely brought it there. I thought, I
- 5:22Speaker 3: really thought that mentioning Captain Shaw from Card season three
- 5:24Speaker 3: would mix it up a little bit because you know,
- 5:28Speaker 3: I'm also not going to pick Captain Shaw. But man,
- 5:32Speaker 3: oh man, I the thing is, okay, I agree Kelvin
- 5:38Speaker 3: Timeline Kirk played by Chris Pine. I would argue that
- 5:42Speaker 3: that version of Kirk is best suited to Star Wars,
- 5:48Speaker 3: believe it or not. In Star Trek Beyond, I think
- 5:52Speaker 3: that's the ultimate refinement of the character because we see
- 5:54Speaker 3: him also able to do a lot of a lot
- 5:57Speaker 3: of action beats that further support your your agree little.
- 6:02Speaker 1: Bit more mature, excellent point.
- 6:04Speaker 3: Yeah, But coming back to Captain Shaw, like, there's a
- 6:08Speaker 3: part of me that still wants to pick him. But
- 6:10Speaker 3: I think it's just because I love the character and
- 6:13Speaker 3: the way he's portrayed, because he's just so he's such
- 6:17Speaker 3: a cool character. Like it's if the Card season three
- 6:21Speaker 3: wasn't as terrific as it is, he would still be
- 6:24Speaker 3: a terrific aspect of season three of that show. As
- 6:31Speaker 3: I reflected on it, you know that my heart wanted
- 6:35Speaker 3: to pick Cisco like really wanted to same same. And
- 6:41Speaker 3: the thing is, I'm trying to talk myself out of it,
- 6:44Speaker 3: But do you think that Cisco, in my brain is
- 6:47Speaker 3: a contender because we have the Bajoran mysticism aspect that
- 6:52Speaker 3: plays into it, Like, does that make me immediately think
- 6:55Speaker 3: that Cisco would lend himself to a galaxy with the
- 6:58Speaker 3: Force in it?
- 6:59Speaker 1: Okay? See, I love what you're thinking there, because I
- 7:04Speaker 1: do get the sense like Cisco could be a Mace
- 7:11Speaker 1: Window style character, but one that isn't so driven necessarily
- 7:17Speaker 1: by the rules. And so I one hundred percent agree
- 7:23Speaker 1: with you that that this could be a character that
- 7:25Speaker 1: really fits into the Star Wars you just into the
- 7:30Speaker 1: Star Wars universe because of this. And you know, I
- 7:34Speaker 1: think it's interesting too because Cisco would also I think,
- 7:40Speaker 1: be a a character then h who has a lot
- 7:48Speaker 1: of depth to him, right, like that that that that
- 7:51Speaker 1: you know he's not just kind of the straight up
- 7:57Speaker 1: hero Jedi character. There's there's dimensions to him there, you know,
- 8:01Speaker 1: the he contains multitudes, right, And so I could I
- 8:05Speaker 1: could absolutely see him him being a character that really
- 8:08Speaker 1: and a captain that you could drop into the Star
- 8:11Speaker 1: Wars universe and kind of see him be able to
- 8:14Speaker 1: fit in, especially very interestingly into the Jedi order. Maybe
- 8:21Speaker 1: a character then who feels a little.
- 8:26Speaker 3: Bit like.
- 8:28Speaker 1: Uh a Qui gon Jin, right where he's kind of
- 8:31Speaker 1: an outlier willing to kind of do his own thing, possibly,
- 8:35Speaker 1: which obviously we saw throughout the history of D Space nine.
- 8:39Speaker 3: So yeah, but as much as I want to pick Cisco,
- 8:44Speaker 3: I would actually wind up, and this is I think
- 8:47Speaker 3: a real dark horse candidate, I would actually wind up
- 8:50Speaker 3: picking Archer from Enterprise.
- 8:53Speaker 1: Okay, okay, you got to tell me more about that,
- 8:56Speaker 1: all right.
- 8:56Speaker 3: So Archer from Enterprise is he's out there, he's encountering
- 9:03Speaker 3: you know, the unknown, the unexplored. He's out there winging it.
- 9:08Speaker 3: He's out there doing these giant adventure story arcs that
- 9:14Speaker 3: harke him back to the nineteen sixties, Kirk. But it
- 9:18Speaker 3: has a little bit more as a terrible word to
- 9:22Speaker 3: use in relation to this sort of thing, it has
- 9:24Speaker 3: a little bit more realism to it, Like it's a
- 9:26Speaker 3: little more grounded in terms of how it happens, in
- 9:29Speaker 3: terms of how he goes about it. And I would
- 9:32Speaker 3: argue that Archer would be the type of space adventurer
- 9:39Speaker 3: who would lend himself to moving through the Star Wars
- 9:43Speaker 3: galaxy because of all of the myriad things that would
- 9:46Speaker 3: be so foreign to him. I'm like, he feels like
- 9:50Speaker 3: a Clone Wars captain, and by that I mean not
- 9:54Speaker 3: that he feels like the captain of a ship on
- 9:56Speaker 3: the Clone Wars, but he feels like that era of
- 9:59Speaker 3: Star Wars. To me, he feels like a character that
- 10:02Speaker 3: could easily work within the Clone Wars because you have
- 10:06Speaker 3: all of these stories that are about encountering wild stuff
- 10:10Speaker 3: that you hadn't considered even a possibility by that point,
- 10:13Speaker 3: and so I think Archer gives us the most the
- 10:16Speaker 3: broadest range of experience when it comes to that.
- 10:19Speaker 1: I really like the way that you put that, especially
- 10:21Speaker 1: with thinking about that Archer is a character who's experiencing
- 10:26Speaker 1: the Star Trek universe for the first time, and you
- 10:29Speaker 1: know so much about Star Wars is about kind of
- 10:32Speaker 1: coming across things that you've never come across, Hero's Journey,
- 10:37Speaker 1: all of those type of things, and so that's I
- 10:42Speaker 1: can totally see him then being able to be kind
- 10:46Speaker 1: of plopped into this universe and be able to be
- 10:52Speaker 1: on a lot of different sides, right. You could see
- 10:56Speaker 1: him being able to kind of fit into various factions
- 11:00Speaker 1: in the Star Wars universe in a way that kind
- 11:02Speaker 1: of fits. So you could see him being able to
- 11:07Speaker 1: fit into a scoundrel or maybe an underworld. You could
- 11:11Speaker 1: see him being somebody who uh maybe possibly grows into
- 11:16Speaker 1: a powerful politician. You could see him being somebody who
- 11:20Speaker 1: is a Jedi, you know, and willing to explore that.
- 11:26Speaker 1: And uh, I think, as you know, when you you
- 11:30Speaker 1: talked about the clone wars idea, especially with what we
- 11:35Speaker 1: saw him as a character in season three of Enterprise,
- 11:41Speaker 1: I think you could really see that character then maybe
- 11:48Speaker 1: possibly being a part of like the onder On type
- 11:50Speaker 1: of rebellion type of story.
- 11:53Speaker 3: Right, Yeah, I like that good poll.
- 11:55Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, so no, I I agree with that poll.
- 11:59Speaker 1: I think that's a that's a really interesting choice. And
- 12:03Speaker 1: you know, I've I've always really loved Archer as a
- 12:05Speaker 1: character anyway, and I'm a huge fan of Enterprise. I
- 12:08Speaker 1: think it's a show that just doesn't really get its
- 12:11Speaker 1: due and is saying sadly maligned for really no good reason.
- 12:17Speaker 3: It just had the misfortune of coming on air at
- 12:20Speaker 3: the wrong moment. I'll throw there. Also, Archer talks to
- 12:25Speaker 3: his dog in the same way that we've seen like
- 12:29Speaker 3: Luke and Anakin talk to our two, So I think
- 12:31Speaker 3: that might be playing a little bit. But I really
- 12:33Speaker 3: love this your idea of Kelvin Kirk because it really
- 12:39Speaker 3: does work. That makes me want to go back actually
- 12:41Speaker 3: and rewatch Star Trek Beyond, because that is just as
- 12:45Speaker 3: a final thought. Yeah, I still really want to see
- 12:48Speaker 3: Justin Lynn do a Star Wars movie. I look at
- 12:52Speaker 3: Star Trek Beyond and I able to deliver really unique
- 12:56Speaker 3: action sequences. I'd love to see that come into two
- 12:59Speaker 3: Star Wars. But that is a discussion for a different day. Obviously.
- 13:03Speaker 1: One thing I want to throw at you before we
- 13:05Speaker 1: get out of here because I think my wife and
- 13:08Speaker 1: I were on season five of Star Trek the Next Oration,
- 13:12Speaker 1: and I think one of the characters obviously on that
- 13:16Speaker 1: show that I think could easily be plopped in and
- 13:20Speaker 1: most interestingly would be somebody like a Captain per Card
- 13:25Speaker 1: as a member of the Jedi Order, moves a little
- 13:29Speaker 1: too stuck in his ways, you know.
- 13:32Speaker 3: I do.
- 13:33Speaker 1: Hmm.
- 13:34Speaker 3: That's interesting. I don't know that I see Picard in
- 13:38Speaker 3: Star Wars, except unless you're talking about him in like
- 13:42Speaker 3: a Laren type of role. I could see him as.
- 13:44Speaker 1: A interesting okay, yep, but not evil?
- 13:48Speaker 3: Is not evil? Is s b u?
- 13:50Speaker 1: Oh yeah?
- 13:51Speaker 3: Good, yep, good you Lauren, you Lauren that I like
- 13:54Speaker 3: or or you.
- 13:55Speaker 1: Could see him being like and and this is where
- 13:59Speaker 1: I think most likely would would have that character is
- 14:02Speaker 1: being a diplomat or a politician, you know in the Senate,
- 14:08Speaker 1: you know, somebody who becomes like, I'm on Mathma type
- 14:11Speaker 1: of figure, you know, bail organa type of figure. Yeah,
- 14:15Speaker 1: and so I think those are the places where you
- 14:17Speaker 1: could probably see that character. But yeah, that was just
- 14:20Speaker 1: a watching him. I was thinking, I just there was
- 14:24Speaker 1: something about him that I was like, I could kind
- 14:27Speaker 1: of see him just being this this Jedi that you
- 14:30Speaker 1: know is on the Council and just you know, as
- 14:36Speaker 1: a little bit too dogmatic for his own good.
- 14:39Speaker 3: So what I love most of all is that neither
- 14:42Speaker 3: one of us fell on the crutch of Kirk from
- 14:45Speaker 3: the original series or the eighties movies. Because as much
- 14:49Speaker 3: as I love love Captain James Tiberius Kirk, especially in
- 14:54Speaker 3: the eighties movies, I I just don't see that character
- 14:59Speaker 3: translate into Star Wars. It is another reason I commend
- 15:03Speaker 3: you for picking Kirk from Kelvin Timeline because that you know,
- 15:05Speaker 3: it didn't occur to me to think of him that way.
- 15:08Speaker 3: But original Kirk Man, I just can't. I can't see him.
- 15:13Speaker 3: It's such a unique character type, and I wish I
- 15:17Speaker 3: knew why. Because the thing is, I hear your arguments
- 15:19Speaker 3: for Picard. I think somebody could make arguments for Jane
- 15:22Speaker 3: way Be, you know, crossing over. There's an argument for
- 15:24Speaker 3: Cisco crossing over. There's an argument for archer Man. I
- 15:28Speaker 3: just don't see original Kirk crossing over into Star Wars.
- 15:31Speaker 3: He's just too uniquely suited to that Star Trek vibe
- 15:37Speaker 3: that you know. I mean, do you agree with me?
- 15:40Speaker 3: Do you think there's any argument or that original Kirk
- 15:43Speaker 3: type could ever make it over.
- 15:46Speaker 1: I think that the interesting part of that Kirk is
- 15:53Speaker 1: that he's so intrinsically tied to those the TS Federation ideals. Yeah,
- 16:06Speaker 1: And I feel like that's the thing that kind of
- 16:08Speaker 1: makes it difficult for him to be there, Yeah, because
- 16:14Speaker 1: I think it's hard to almost divorce him from that,
- 16:17Speaker 1: which seems like almost weird to say, uh, But I
- 16:23Speaker 1: think partly it's it's not that he doesn't have a
- 16:26Speaker 1: roguishness like Chris Pine does, uh, and Chris Pine's Kirk does.
- 16:32Speaker 1: I think he definitely has that. But there's I agree
- 16:35Speaker 1: with you, there's just something that's so indelible about him
- 16:39Speaker 1: as the Captain of the Enterprise and the way in
- 16:43Speaker 1: which he is so wrapped up in discussions the Federation,
- 16:51Speaker 1: the Prime Directive and all that kind of stuff that
- 16:54Speaker 1: you know, it just seems like it would be a
- 16:56Speaker 1: hard thing to you know, get him on the get
- 17:01Speaker 1: him in the other franchise. So yeah, I mean some
- 17:06Speaker 1: fun picks. Honestly, this is one of those where I
- 17:09Speaker 1: want people to respond to us. Yeah, same, and tell
- 17:12Speaker 1: us what they think. You know, which captain they think
- 17:17Speaker 1: would would be in Star Wars and why?
- 17:21Speaker 3: Yeah. So you know, as mentioned before, guys, go ahead
- 17:25Speaker 3: go over to the nerd party dot com slash contact
- 17:28Speaker 3: drop a note for us, let us know what you think.
- 17:29Speaker 3: But Matt, people can also bug you over on social media.
- 17:33Speaker 3: Where can they find you?
- 17:34Speaker 1: Hit me up on the name Matt Rushing zero two.
- 17:36Speaker 1: Just search whatever platform you're on. If I'm there, you'll
- 17:39Speaker 1: find me and I'd love to be able to talk
- 17:41Speaker 1: to you. You can also find me, of course here
- 17:43Speaker 1: on the network with a show called Owl Post did
- 17:47Speaker 1: that with Drea Kauffman as we talked about every single
- 17:49Speaker 1: chapter of the Harry Potter series, one chapter at a time.
- 17:51Speaker 1: You can find me over on the TFM network with
- 17:55Speaker 1: a bunch of shows once called the six oh two Club,
- 17:58Speaker 1: talking about all of the franchise that we love outside
- 18:02Speaker 1: of Star Trek, tons of Star Wars talk. John Mills
- 18:05Speaker 1: is a frequent guest over there, so make sure you
- 18:08Speaker 1: do check that out. I am you'll love it, and
- 18:11Speaker 1: a lot of great Star Trek talk actually, so if
- 18:13Speaker 1: you like Star Trek Talk, you know, doing shows on
- 18:16Speaker 1: d S Phase nine and Star Trek Voyager Enterprise, you know,
- 18:22Speaker 1: just plenty of great shows over there. And of course
- 18:25Speaker 1: Strange New Worlds is coming back this summer, so we'll
- 18:27Speaker 1: be talking about that as well. But John, if people
- 18:29Speaker 1: wanted to catch up with you talk about their favorite
- 18:31Speaker 1: Star Trek captains and why they should be in Star Wars,
- 18:34Speaker 1: where would they find you.
- 18:35Speaker 3: You can find me on the social networks as Kessel Junkie,
- 18:38Speaker 3: Like Matt said for himself, if it's a network that
- 18:40Speaker 3: I'm on, that's where you'll find me. As Kessel Junkie.
- 18:43Speaker 3: You can find me right here on the Network co
- 18:45Speaker 3: hosting a show with Darren Moser and Tricia Riddell called
- 18:48Speaker 3: house Lights where we have a lot of fun and
- 18:51Speaker 3: I find out that Darren and Tristan are WIMPs who
- 18:54Speaker 3: don't appreciate the horror genre in the least and at
- 18:57Speaker 3: least one of them will have their cars set on
- 18:59Speaker 3: fire by me at some point in the not too
- 19:02Speaker 3: distant future. But Matt, so that I can go back
- 19:05Speaker 3: and get my kerosene and find out if there's a
- 19:07Speaker 3: blowtorch setting on the lightsaber, I think it's time to
- 19:10Speaker 3: go back to the temple and close these negotiations.
- 19:13Speaker 1: Well, with that in mind, the negotiations are close. Join
- 19:26Speaker 1: the Revolution, Join the Nerd Party.
