Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Buzz Burrell: General Practitioners Aotearoa Chair on the study showing vaping could be a factor in Sudden Unexpected Infant Deaths
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: New study from the University of Otago vaping around newborn's
- 0:04Speaker 1: potential higher risk of COT death. Baby dies in their sleep, unexplained.
- 0:08Speaker 1: That's basically what COT death is. Maternal vaping was reported
- 0:12Speaker 1: in half of the cases that involved direct bed sharing.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Dr Buzz Burrell General practitioners outed, oh, chieved with me
- 0:18Speaker 1: this morning, Dodor Buzz, Good.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Morning, Ryan, good morning, Good to talk to you again.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Good to have you on. So tell me what is
- 0:25Speaker 1: what is the link here between vaping and sudden from
- 0:28Speaker 1: death syndrome.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Yeah, look, it's it's sending I think, well, we could
- 0:33Speaker 2: say a very concerning signal. There isn't a direct cause.
- 0:37Speaker 2: My skim reading of the paper is that it's had
- 0:41Speaker 2: a look at just over one hundreds of suddenly and
- 0:44Speaker 2: death and the theme very strongly emerged. Bed sharing was
- 0:49Speaker 2: still a common theme which came out, but bed sharing
- 0:53Speaker 2: with smoking and or vaping. Eighty five percent of the
- 0:57Speaker 2: COT best had those in common. So it's it's certainly emerging.
- 1:01Speaker 2: I think is the correct way to work as a
- 1:03Speaker 2: as a risk factor for sudden infant death and gosh,
- 1:06Speaker 2: what absolutely horrible and lifelong condition. I really appreciate your
- 1:10Speaker 2: interest in this it's it's it's it's just it's just
- 1:14Speaker 2: so sad and tragic, and anything we can do to
- 1:17Speaker 2: reduce the risk, we've just got to actively go for it.
- 1:20Speaker 2: I think what big message is and that this is
- 1:22Speaker 2: emerging as well, vaping is not harmless. And I think
- 1:27Speaker 2: all credits to the markets, they seem to have tried
- 1:30Speaker 2: to get that message of craft that vaping is safe.
- 1:34Speaker 1: What's the what's actually happening here? Is the vape somehow
- 1:38Speaker 1: like the vape juice or is it that the mother
- 1:41Speaker 1: is smothering? How do the babies die?
- 1:44Speaker 2: Yeah, good question. It's it's probably almost certainly the same
- 1:47Speaker 2: mechanism that smoking during pregnancy is getting into the baby.
- 1:52Speaker 2: So it will be a combination of the contents of
- 1:57Speaker 2: the cigarette and or the con tense of debate, and
- 2:01Speaker 2: bearing in mind that at a baby you've got a
- 2:02Speaker 2: lot of stuff in the bay. You not only got
- 2:05Speaker 2: the inhaled nicotine which which is doing strange things to
- 2:07Speaker 2: the to the lining of the blood vessels of the baby,
- 2:11Speaker 2: the present around the mother and that people consential unit.
- 2:15Speaker 2: But but there's there's other things that there's a there's
- 2:17Speaker 2: there's bland making this up now. But everything I think
- 2:19Speaker 2: we've got glycol, We've we've got a burnt products of
- 2:23Speaker 2: old aldehydes, that's burnt bits of metal. Every time somebody
- 2:26Speaker 2: is inhaving a bay product, they're inhaving all of that
- 2:30Speaker 2: and nicotine. And there's something about hating nicotine and putting
- 2:33Speaker 2: into the lungs is unique. If you put it in
- 2:36Speaker 2: the patch, if you swallow it by means of a gum,
- 2:39Speaker 2: it doesn't seem to have the same lung effects as
- 2:42Speaker 2: if you're inhaling it. So it's there's something just unique
- 2:45Speaker 2: about that.
- 2:46Speaker 1: All right, good stuff dot well, not good stuff, I
- 2:48Speaker 1: should say, doctor Buz on last Vy on the program
- 2:50Speaker 1: this morning.
