- 0:01I think too many of you may have already had this experience.
- 0:04Imagine a friend who suffered violent domestic
- 0:08abuse, and your friend is happy and says, good news, I can
- 0:12never be abused again. And you ask, what do you mean?
- 0:16Your friend produces a piece of paper and said, see,
- 0:19I've got a restraining order. Now I can
- 0:22never be abused again.
- 0:25I'm sure you'd start thinking as I would, hey, you know, that kind
- 0:29of wishful thinking is going to get you killed. But what if the victim
- 0:33of domestic abuse wasn't just an individual,
- 0:37but was the Catholic Church? Then what?
- 0:40Stay with me, I've got a story to tell. Hi, I'm Jesuit Father Robert McKeague,
- 0:44your host every day of The Catholic Current, coming to you from the Station of
- 0:47the Cross Catholic Media Network. Let's take a closer look. Glad you're
- 0:51here. On August 28th of this year, the US Department of Justice
- 0:54issued a report by the Weaponization Working Group. Well, what is that?
- 0:59Well, some people realized that elements of the FBI were
- 1:03being weaponized against American citizens because,
- 1:08well, you know, because reasons.
- 1:11This particular case goes back to January of 2023.
- 1:15The FBI field office in Richmond, Virginia produced
- 1:19a report that it wanted to send to the entire FBI.
- 1:22Suggesting that communities of what they called radical traditional
- 1:26Catholics, hereafter referred to as RTCs,
- 1:30could be attracting or even generating white supremacists
- 1:34and other racially or ethnically motivated violent extremists.
- 1:38And you say, gosh, Father, what are the hallmarks? What are the distinguishing
- 1:42features of radical Catholics that
- 1:45have to be investigated by the FBI? Well, Among other things,
- 1:50the FBI says rejection of Vatican II,
- 1:54disdain for post-Vatican II popes, conservative family roles,
- 1:59rejection of modernity, and isolation.
- 2:02You can read all of it yourself in the show notes attached
- 2:06to this report. Long story short, the report generated
- 2:10a lot of blowback, and the FBI tried to hide it, say it was a
- 2:13misunderstanding, et cetera, et cetera. But good news, this year the
- 2:18FBI investigated itself.
- 2:23Okay, and then what? Well, and now the special agent in
- 2:27charge of the Richmond office who approved this memo
- 2:30targeting radical traditional Catholics,
- 2:33RTCs, he has a new job.
- 2:37He works for the governor of Virginia as her secretary for
- 2:41public safety and homeland security. Well, that's a
- 2:45relief, especially for all our friends in Virginia. Meanwhile, the people who
- 2:49now run the FBI— and they run it
- 2:54for now— they say that all this was a
- 2:58very bad thing and they won't
- 3:02stand for it ever, ever again. No,
- 3:05sir. Okay.
- 3:09Good news, I suppose.
- 3:12Should all Catholics, indeed all Christians,
- 3:16every American breathe a great sigh of relief?
- 3:20Can't we sit back and say, we're saved, we're saved,
- 3:25FBI be praised? Well,
- 3:28this is when I can't help but think of that domestic
- 3:32violence, uh, victim And the restraining
- 3:36order, that magic piece of paper,
- 3:41is that really the very best that we can do?
- 3:44I'm open to suggestions. Comment in the show notes below or
- 3:48contact me at thestationofthecross.com/askfather.
- 3:52What would you like to see be done next to make sure for real that
- 3:57this doesn't happen again? Meanwhile, think on these things today. Take them
- 4:01to prayer and talk about it with those you love. Go in peace,
- 4:04and please do pray for me, for I am a
