- 0:26The. The well hello and welcome back
- 1:02to hamster at the movies. Hello hello, welcome to the red
- 1:09carpet. Oh thanks.
- 1:11What spangly number do you have on Today I've.
- 1:14Got my best suit on, especially for the occasion.
- 1:17Best suit? Andreas, the occasion.
- 1:21I've come wearing who's that you wore on the on the catwalk, all
- 1:26of that meat. Do you remember Lady Gaga?
- 1:29Yeah, I've worn, I'm wearing that.
- 1:31You meet. I've got a load of pork chops
- 1:35and a couple of steaks. Well, we're all ready for a
- 1:38star-studded night to night of movies we'll be watching sort of
- 1:42sporadically, Haven't we lately? Yeah.
- 1:44It's been a while, what was the last one we talked about?
- 1:46Clone starring Matt, definitely. That's right, yeah.
- 1:50And Bishop Potter, Beatrix Bottom movie, but we've sort of
- 1:54done a mixture really. We've been doing a mixture of
- 1:56going to the actual cinema itself, which you'll hear about
- 2:00shortly. Also still picking the things
- 2:02out-of-the-box and wait to go to the collection, but also
- 2:05watching some movies on streaming platforms as well.
- 2:09We've done it all I. Know we have.
- 2:11Well, let's start going back a little way to old Hollywood
- 2:15time. Oh, I'm talking about the films
- 2:18when the films were made. How far back we're going.
- 2:20Well, we did some Alfred Hitchcock's.
- 2:22Oh, we did. I'm sure we didn't talk about
- 2:24this last time, no. I'm sure.
- 2:27Well, we did North by Northwest because we hadn't seen that one.
- 2:30That was the one that was that inspired the first James Bond
- 2:34films. All spy spy thriller, wasn't it?
- 2:37Yeah, and I really like that. I can't believe I've seen so
- 2:40many Alfred Hitchcock films. You never seen that one?
- 2:42Well, I did have Red Hitchcock at university and I don't know
- 2:45why I didn't see North by Northwest.
- 2:47Well, that one, I mean, I thought the conceit, the idea
- 2:51was inspired, the idea that this man was at this gentlemen's club
- 2:56and was overheard, or rather mis overheard.
- 3:00And then everyone thinks he's a spy, but he's just an innocent
- 3:04bystander. So he gets shipped off to the
- 3:06villains house. They think he's a spy.
- 3:08He gets involved in all these arms deals and shenanigans.
- 3:12They all think he's a spy. By the end of the bloody movie,
- 3:16he's hanging out of Matt Rushmore.
- 3:19And if you haven't seen it, I think actually, yeah, there's
- 3:21two big images that people would know about this even if you
- 3:25haven't seen the fair. Rushmore.
- 3:27Well, there's Mount Rushmore sort of hanging off at a sort of
- 3:29a chase over Mount Rushmore. Which was actually, which was
- 3:32pretty amazing. Mount Rushmore.
- 3:33You don't hear about it these days.
- 3:35Very. Much do you?
- 3:36It used to be. I swear, like 80s films and
- 3:38stuff, it's still there, right? It hasn't fallen apart.
- 3:41It's like the Hollywood sign it's of.
- 3:43All that, you see that all the time, but.
- 3:44You just don't see now, no. I love, I'd love to see Mount
- 3:47Rushmore. All those faces.
- 3:49No do. You know what I prefer?
- 3:50The. Movie.
- 3:51Not, not Matt Rushmore. I'm reading a book at the
- 3:53moment, Doctor Who, Eye of Heaven, which has got the Mawai
- 3:57statues, you know. Yeah, yeah.
- 3:59I think to see them, they're more impressive than Matt.
- 4:02Rushmore, you just don't hear about these.
- 4:04Rushmore was just a load of presidents.
- 4:06Nobody knows what the Mawai was. No.
- 4:09Anyway, back to So there's the Mount Rushmore thing, and also
- 4:13there's Cary Grant. Here's Cary Grant.
- 4:15Isn't he running away from a, a plane in like a field?
- 4:20And just the way that that's, oh, that moment I've that seemed
- 4:24like, you know, always at the top of that movie moment.
- 4:26So you might remember that. The the suspense of that
- 4:30sequence where it's all silence, isn't it?
- 4:33It wakes up, it's all silence. And Alfred Heschcart, he's using
- 4:36these wide lenses, so you really see the space that he's in.
- 4:41And then the plane coming, you know, Doctor Deadly Assassin, is
- 4:44that, is that a take on that sequence?
- 4:47You know, when the plane's coming down, of course, very
- 4:49similar, isn't it? Although obviously North Point
- 4:52Northwest was done on a bigger budget.
- 4:54Yeah, I thought it was really fun.
- 4:56Like, like we're going to talk about another average age Cocker
- 4:59movie in a second. And I thought that was better,
- 5:01but this was really well made for the 14 classic.
- 5:06Yeah, absolutely. And then the other Alfred.
- 5:08Wait, you need to give it hamster wheels?
- 5:10Hamster Wheels. I'll give that a four.
- 5:12Yeah, definitely. Out of five.
- 5:14Yeah, four out of five. Very entertaining, yeah.
- 5:18And the next Alfred Hitchcock, because we were inspired after
- 5:21watching that one, to watch another one I'd seen before.
- 5:24You hadn't seen it? No.
- 5:25And I really was gaining with a bit of trepidation, this one,
- 5:29well, because I knew it was all these long scenes and I really
- 5:32thought it was going to be talky and very dull.
- 5:34I love those ones though. I love getting that because I've
- 5:36got like the box set. Of them didn't say what it was.
- 5:39Or what? It's rope, but I've got the book
- 5:42set of Alfred Hitchcock, which didn't have North by Northwest
- 5:45in originally. And I love just going through
- 5:47them and not knowing anything about them and just watching
- 5:50them just to see what happens and you have no idea.
- 5:52So rope, I mean, that is an absolute classic as well.
- 5:56I mean, we're going, this is before N, this is like.
- 6:00It's still the fourties. Fourties, yeah.
- 6:03So basically it's all set in one apartment and it it's, I mean,
- 6:10it's filmed in a couple of sections, but it could almost be
- 6:13like a play. Yeah, you you can see where the
- 6:16cuts. Go you can see where the cuts so
- 6:18So what happens is so basically he has a dead body in a chest.
- 6:21No, literally the opening shot, yeah.
- 6:24And and this is very Black Orchid.
- 6:26You know, the opening shot is somebody being strangled, so
- 6:29there's no chance for you to relax into this movie.
- 6:32The opening shot is somebody being murdered.
- 6:34So straight away you're feeling anxious and then the whole movie
- 6:37is dealing with the the consequences.
- 6:39The body is in there, all of the friends and family.
- 6:41It's basically a dinner party. Is it so they they want to see
- 6:44if they can get away with it? Don't they invite over all of
- 6:48the murdered man's family? His mother, his father?
- 6:53No, it's his father and the father's girlfriend, isn't it?
- 6:55That's right. So I think this is actually
- 6:57based on an actual play. So it was a play originally
- 7:00before and then they've turned into a film.
- 7:03But again, it's suspense. It's Alfred Hitchcock what he
- 7:06does best. How do you do?
- 7:09My name is Alfred Hitchcock. By all accounts, you know he was
- 7:12a bit of a beast, wasn't? Very well.
- 7:15At the box, have you heard? Yes, I know, I know he was a bit
- 7:18of a. Love after that, but I've got to
- 7:20say that blew my mind. I was raving about that movie.
- 7:26I've. Seen it?
- 7:26Before, but he was raving about it to everybody.
- 7:29I think it was 10 of me. With them, because there's the
- 7:32body, there's one point where the maid is.
- 7:35Clear. Oh my God.
- 7:37Seconds away from opening up the chest and finding the body.
- 7:41She just he he leaves the camera stationary on the chest where
- 7:47the dinner table stuff is on. So they have the nerve, these
- 7:51two killers, to have the family of the victim eat off of the the
- 7:58very thing that contains his corpse.
- 8:01And that's how close to the edge they've got.
- 8:03And the whole sequence is the maid clearing this table, going
- 8:05back and forth, back and forth, and to the point where she takes
- 8:09the tablecloth off and then she goes to lift up the thing and,
- 8:13and you think in front of everybody, she's going to
- 8:15discover it and they're going to get caught.
- 8:18Fuck me. It was one of the best suspense
- 8:20sequences I've ever. Seen these are timeless because
- 8:23it's the storytelling and like, if you made it today, it
- 8:27wouldn't be that different. You don't get Yeah, and the
- 8:30performance. Is they were quite modern, those
- 8:32performances, you know, there's a certain style to acting in the
- 8:3640s and the 50s and I just thought that would pass muster
- 8:40today, but. You don't really get many good
- 8:42directors. You don't really get the modern
- 8:45equivalent of Alfred Hitchcock. I mean, M Night Shmalian is
- 8:49probably the nearest I would say to in terms of that type of
- 8:53film. It's the film with the twist.
- 8:54It's that gruesome element, the. Twisting rope is in the first
- 8:59scene. That is the twist in the film.
- 9:02That's so clever. But at night, Shamali and Alfred
- 9:06Hitchcock, they both got one thing in common, is that I think
- 9:09they both are inspired by the concept of a movie.
- 9:12So that's a yeah, I'll do that one because that's a really
- 9:15great idea. And I want to see if I, you
- 9:16know, how old. I want to see if I can do a
- 9:19movie about a a beach that ages people, you know, in 90 minutes
- 9:23from child to death. Yeah, this was amazing.
- 9:27And the backdrop, right, The backdrop of New York coming a
- 9:32lot made. In a studio.
- 9:33But it starts off during the day and then becomes the night and
- 9:37the lights turn on and smoke starts coming out of buildings
- 9:41and it's all fake. It looks amazingly good.
- 9:44This is easy 5 hamster wheel. Absolutely 5 for me as well.
- 9:48And the way, you know, when the detective came back and you
- 9:51know, he knows he's figured it out and he starts putting
- 9:56together all of the inconsistencies of the evening
- 9:59and you're just waiting for the moment where one of them is like
- 10:02going to triumph at him. And the the killers.
- 10:05It's one guy who's very calm and collected and another guy who's
- 10:09sort of nervy and anxious. And I kept waiting for the nervy
- 10:12and anxious want to go. Yes, OK, we did it, you know.
- 10:15I was so good. I'd love to watch these on the
- 10:18big screen at the cinema. Oh yes, we should.
- 10:21Keep an eye out for any I'd. Like to do the rest of that box
- 10:23set actually. Yeah, there's loads of good.
- 10:24Ones there we might be talking about some more appreciate
- 10:26clocks in the future. So what else did we do?
- 10:32Was that 5 for you by the way? Oh yeah, yeah, 5 for me.
- 10:37OK. And then we did a more modern
- 10:39film from Amazon Prime, Red, White and Royal.
- 10:44Blue Boy. They popular gay romance fiction
- 10:49book which I read the book first this came out.
- 10:52Was it authentic to the book? I mean, yeah, I mean, pretty
- 10:56much it is as the book. I wanted to read the book first
- 10:58before I watched it and. Basically, but could you see
- 11:01this? One is everybody, so it's the
- 11:06Prince of England. That's right.
- 11:08It's very pop. Prince of England.
- 11:11Not actually anybody in real life.
- 11:14Not based on anyone in real life at all.
- 11:16Prince of England, the hottest Prince of England you've ever
- 11:18seen in your life. Like smoking hot model.
- 11:21And the son of the president of America.
- 11:25Who's sort of Latina and the only person in the world who's
- 11:29hotter than the Prince of England, right?
- 11:31So it's the two hottest men on the earth.
- 11:33Ever So they've met through sort of, you know, like diplomatic
- 11:36relations and stuff and they sort of hate each other to begin
- 11:39with. It's a bit of a sort of ROM com
- 11:41style thing. And then they sort of end up
- 11:44together, and then together, it's a scene.
- 11:48Bumming all over the world. And then they keep seeing it,
- 11:50and then they have to sort. You know, obviously, the whole
- 11:53world is watching them. And also there's elections
- 11:56coming up in America. So his mother is running for
- 12:00president again. So she needs to, you know, keep
- 12:03up her appearances and also, you know, obviously, the king of
- 12:07England. Is it Stephen Fry?
- 12:10It's the king of England. That's uncle, isn't?
- 12:12It. No, I think that's the key I.
- 12:13Know it really sort of says for sure we don't do these sort of
- 12:16things. In England, sorry, remember, you
- 12:18know, I think it's the anyway, do you know what?
- 12:21Obviously there's a scandal. The royal family as well.
- 12:24It's just fun. It's gay.
- 12:25Bumming in the royal family? Imagine the scandal, the thing
- 12:29that salvage this movie. I thought because it was absurd
- 12:32on a level. I mean, we've barely watched in
- 12:34any movie. Fun.
- 12:35So there's this enormous fucking birthday cake right at a past
- 12:40that's. Right at the beginning.
- 12:41Right. This is when they hate each
- 12:42other and he accidentally shoves him or something and one of them
- 12:46goes into the cake, just a little bit goes Oh my God, got
- 12:48cake on me. And then before you know it,
- 12:50they're literally throwing this entire cake.
- 12:52The whole thing falls on top of them.
- 12:54I mean, it's just ridiculous, but the chemistry between the
- 12:57leads was something else. Like they were so perfectly cast
- 13:02and like the description of all of like, I hate you, I hate you
- 13:07was really bad. But then.
- 13:09Well they they text a lot, so you have all the messages come
- 13:11up on the screen. A lot of.
- 13:13Emails and. Texts by the time.
- 13:15Which is in the book as well. I'm not talking about the
- 13:17fucking. By the time they're romantic
- 13:19together, you just totally sold on the relationship and by the
- 13:23end of it where it looks like because of the scandal, they're
- 13:25not going to be together. I was so really sad.
- 13:28I was like, oh, I really want them to be together.
- 13:29So when when he took his hand and took him to the balcony, it
- 13:33was like, I'm going to let the whole world know this is my
- 13:36boyfriend and I bum. That wasn't the line.
- 13:40I was like, yeah, actually I really enjoyed it.
- 13:42It was, it was so ridiculous, so.
- 13:45Yeah, I mean, the book was what? It's exactly the same as the
- 13:47book. There's a lot of All about the
- 13:49presidential things in America in the book as well, which was a
- 13:52little bit boring, but. If you it was fun, don't want to
- 13:56see lots of men kissing and you know, like I think there was a
- 14:00blowjob at one point. Wasn't there something he went
- 14:02down on him see anything? I don't know.
- 14:04But you know, if you don't want to see that sort of thing, maybe
- 14:06give this one a miss. But if you want to see a sweet
- 14:08romance, you know, sweet romance with the occasional funny
- 14:11moment. I mean, it wasn't.
- 14:12Laugh a minute. I think the sequel is in the
- 14:14works, so I'm sure that'll. Be out soon.
- 14:16It is because it was a. Big success.
- 14:18I mean, I have to say the Latina actor playing the American guy
- 14:23was truly the hottest person that's ever appeared in anything
- 14:25ever. So he should be getting work
- 14:28just on the fact that he's. In a lot of things.
- 14:30He's like an Adonis. Anyway, I would give that free
- 14:34hamster wheels and I was surprised because in the start I
- 14:36thought I was going to give it 2.
- 14:38Yeah, I'll give it three. I mean, it's not one to watch
- 14:40again and again, is it? Super fun though.
- 14:42Fun fun frothy bubble gum movie. And then going on to It, Stephen
- 14:51King. Hello story.
- 14:54Little boy, I got you a balloon. Why don't you put your hand down
- 14:59inside the store and I'll give you this balloon.
- 15:04God, you. See so this is the remake was.
- 15:07Huge teeth come out. This cloud was so scary.
- 15:10Have you? Seen the original one?
- 15:12Yeah, TV. Now the scary as well that was
- 15:15that was Tim Curry from Rocky Horror.
- 15:17But the ending, it turned into a massive spider, and
- 15:21unfortunately they couldn't do it at the time.
- 15:22It was a big puppet. It looked really, really
- 15:24terrible. I mean, the effects in this are
- 15:26great. It's, yeah.
- 15:27I mean, I'm not, it's not scary. It's the jumpiness for me.
- 15:31It's the sudden. It's the Clowness the Clown.
- 15:35Doesn't whisper. It's like.
- 15:36It's the clown jumping out at me I don't like.
- 15:39Come here with me onto the stairs, I got a toy for you and
- 15:43some sweeties. Don't you look like the clown,
- 15:46right? Now.
- 15:49I mean the all the kid actors are great.
- 15:52It's vibing off the popularity of Stranger Things.
- 15:55No if Stranger Things. Stand by me, I've got a huge
- 15:58stand by vibe. That's from Stand by, Stand by
- 16:01me, Stranger Things to it. Isn't it all Link.
- 16:04It's kids in the 80s at the end, great actors did.
- 16:06Not say to you at the end this was less about horror, it was
- 16:10more a coming of age story. It is.
- 16:11That's what it is. That's what he's written in the
- 16:13novel. The kids are like, the kids are
- 16:15like, you know, they have to band together and they're all
- 16:17the sort of all the the rejects of the school.
- 16:20So they've come, they've formed this sort of this nice gang and
- 16:24but you know, they have to truly face some pretty horrific
- 16:27moments. And we haven't seen, I mean,
- 16:29this is divided up into two. So there is the the modern
- 16:33sequel as well, which is the other half, which I think the
- 16:35original was too hard because you've got the kids when they're
- 16:37younger. That's right.
- 16:38And then it all happens and they think they've defeated it and
- 16:42everything. And then they all come back as
- 16:44adults. So the second one is all of them
- 16:47is adults. So we should watch that one as.
- 16:49Well, gang when you was a kid, No.
- 16:51You know, if I, if I had a gang when I was a kid, no, I didn't
- 16:54because I was a bit of a loser. I was standing watching Paradise
- 16:56to house things like that. But if I had a gang and they
- 16:58said, right, come on, we're going to go to this really scary
- 17:00house where that clown lives and we're going to go and defeat
- 17:03him. I'll say no, you're right.
- 17:04Actually I'd rather won't have any friends.
- 17:07This is a fall for me I really enjoyed.
- 17:09It. Yeah, yeah, I'm gonna say foot.
- 17:11We're agreeing on all of these at the moment.
- 17:12Scary. It's really good fun.
- 17:14Yeah, very well filmed as well. Beautifully directed.
- 17:17Yeah, I don't know if the scares always it worked because
- 17:21sometimes there was a bit of reliable special effects, but
- 17:23the big. Anticipation was it was great
- 17:26that. Poor girl was covered in blood
- 17:27in the bathroom. All of this blood was.
- 17:29Really good set. People you went up out of the
- 17:31bowl and they. Go into that old house and
- 17:33everything. I mean it's.
- 17:35Nothing, it's nothing would top that bit at the beginning with
- 17:38that little boy being enticed down in.
- 17:41I mean, that's the whole point. That's how it all starts off
- 17:44with the sewer. It's like, again, it's that I
- 17:46it's that iconic image isn't it's the clown looking out of
- 17:48the the sewer. Oh, it's.
- 17:50Not sewer. I was watching this, right.
- 17:51I had popcorn and Mark kept jumping.
- 17:52I kept losing my popcorn everywhere.
- 17:55But yeah. Four.
- 17:56Yeah, I think that was good. Yeah.
- 17:58Creepy. Creepy next.
- 18:01Well, we'll talk about Star Wars because we did over.
- 18:04The last few months. We went to Cineworld, didn't we?
- 18:08That's right, Star Wars Sunday. So 5 lbs.
- 18:11So we watched the original trilogy on the big screen.
- 18:16We. Did.
- 18:17But these were the 90s remasttle.
- 18:20I mean George Lucas, I think he got rid of the originals or put
- 18:23in a vault somewhere. Anyway, it's the the updated
- 18:26versions that he brought out in like 9596.
- 18:29That had new effects in it. Which had all those new.
- 18:32Very dated, which was slightly. Dated because they're the 90s
- 18:34effects and it's got deleted scenes and everything.
- 18:37But I mean, it's been such a long time since I watched the
- 18:38originals, I couldn't really tell what was new and what I'd.
- 18:41Forgot I only watched them for the first time, you know, about
- 18:43five years ago. Really.
- 18:45Ever. Yeah.
- 18:45Oh my God. Just never.
- 18:47We've never a Star Wars house. We were never.
- 18:49We were Star Trek house and we were a Doctor Who house, so
- 18:52there was no room for Star Wars. And Star Wars on always had Star
- 18:55Wars on. Well, I've seen up in your attic
- 18:57you've got that fabulous Millennium Falcon toy.
- 19:00Yeah. Something called the attacks,
- 19:05they're amazing. So the first one, what's it
- 19:08called? A New Hope.
- 19:09A New Hope, yeah. I mean slightly the only, I mean
- 19:13the experience of watching in the cinema is great.
- 19:15But we were in the front row so then tickets left so I couldn't
- 19:19see the whole screen. I kept like on my neck really
- 19:23hard like. Whinging throughout the whole
- 19:25movie. I don't know why they sell
- 19:26tickets for that close. You know, I could see it, said
- 19:30Cineworld. And all I had was NE right in
- 19:32front of me. I had to stretch my.
- 19:34Head, Obviously every time there was a close up of Carrie Fisher,
- 19:37I could see right up her nose. We could see, I could see
- 19:39everything. It was so that really not my
- 19:43neck really hurt. So I didn't particularly enjoy
- 19:46that one. I mean, I love the story.
- 19:48It's great watching it on the big screen.
- 19:49I. Thought just.
- 19:51Get immersed in it. Don't.
- 19:52You know what I ohh, I'm I'm 2 two I really loved one.
- 19:56I was less keen on of the original trilogy.
- 19:58I thought this was super fun. Like this was the funniest I
- 20:01thought. And loads of C3PO and R2D2 and
- 20:06there. I think there's a lot of deleted
- 20:07scenes of them put in because they're in it.
- 20:09Well, I feel good because. They make the movie.
- 20:12I feel like this whole Star Wars saga the lead is actually R2D2.
- 20:16It all happens around him. The funniest thing is though.
- 20:19It's all to do. Right.
- 20:20It's you and me. Before this, we watched Revenge
- 20:23of the Sith. Yeah, which had the most
- 20:25incredible lifesaver battle between Anakin Skywalker and
- 20:30everyone Kenobi. And then, of course, A New Hope
- 20:33has their final Alec Guinness. Yeah, and bless them.
- 20:37Like, obviously I'm not. Obviously, I know it was done 20
- 20:40years earlier or whatever, but it was so lame.
- 20:43Wasn't it? Just sort of like touching their
- 20:44little beams together very gently.
- 20:47And because we've watched, I mean, we watched the prequel,
- 20:50the new prequel, The Phantom Menace, blah, blah, blah, all
- 20:52those ones before. There's a slight continuity
- 20:55issue, which I'm sure there's a million Star Wars fans out there
- 20:58which debate this hotly. So obviously young Anakin
- 21:04Skywalker is not Anakin. What's his name?
- 21:07Wan Kenobi. Obi Wan Kenobi.
- 21:08Young Obi Wan knows C3, built C3PO and knows him.
- 21:12So in this first one they find where Luke ends up with C3PO and
- 21:18they find old Obi Wan Kenobi. C3PO doesn't know who he.
- 21:23Is no, he just doesn't know. No, he literally has a line.
- 21:25He says. I've never had a Droid before
- 21:28the old Does he say that? He says that he's actually
- 21:30saying that actually. Says.
- 21:31They're in the same room, C3PO and they're in the same and
- 21:34there's no and even R2D2 and R2D2 as well.
- 21:37They don't know who he is, which is a bit of a shame.
- 21:39You. Can't blame A New Hope for
- 21:42something that happened. Yeah, just because they did.
- 21:44It no you've. Got a blame Phantom Menace for
- 21:46that though not A New Hope. No, yeah, I knew how it came
- 21:50first. You can't blame the one that
- 21:51came first, you blame the one that came second.
- 21:53That ruins the continuity of what came first and that.
- 21:55I just really annoyed you when that happened.
- 21:57I'm sure there's a book or there's something or.
- 22:00I've got to say my favorite sequence in the whole movie was
- 22:02when they fell down a hole into all this trash, and then all the
- 22:06walls started coming in. It reminded me of the war games
- 22:09where the hardest walls came in. That was the first one.
- 22:12Yeah, Right. Yeah.
- 22:12Oh my God, It was so funny. And actually, I just thought
- 22:15Carrie Fisher kicked ass as well.
- 22:18And I wonder, she became a heroine.
- 22:19So many people. And Empire stripes back returned
- 22:21the Jedi again the same great on the big screen.
- 22:25Do you think with Carrie Fisher? I couldn't even remember all the
- 22:27jab of the hot stuff in there. No, that was the Jedi.
- 22:30I couldn't remember after that. I think with Carrie Fisher,
- 22:34right, All of the girls wanted to be her.
- 22:37Yeah, all of the straight men wanted to fuck her, and all of
- 22:41the gay men also wanted to be her.
- 22:46Or the only bit, I don't know, that might have dated the most
- 22:49is in Return of the Jedi in Jabba the Huts, Cabaret Bar.
- 22:53You know that alien that's singing?
- 22:56Yeah, yeah. No, that's sort of.
- 23:01She's got like, lips. She's like, oh, that's so funny.
- 23:05You know, she reminded me of who everyone's a fruit and nut cake.
- 23:09Yeah, it's a. Bit like a taste of campus
- 23:11chocolate. It's a bit like that so some of
- 23:13it has stated but. Hunky, chunky almonds.
- 23:16They're the secret. I'm about beauty.
- 23:19If anyone doesn't know it's a big lipped choc bar of chocolate
- 23:23from the 18th and advert on the 19th.
- 23:25Sorry, you weren't about in the 80s, were you?
- 23:26So I mean, are we going to individually?
- 23:28Rate all of these four for A New Hope.
- 23:31For me, 4, yeah, I mean, I'm going to do 4/3.
- 23:36Well, now you got to talk about the second one.
- 23:37Well, no, we have. I've just been talking about
- 23:38them all. Just.
- 23:39Generally I haven't. I was just talking about a new
- 23:41home. And pass right us back.
- 23:42Go on. Yeah, boring.
- 23:44OK, now this is the most popular start.
- 23:45It was a movie at all, but it's slow.
- 23:49It's really exciting. Do you know those sequences on
- 23:50Hoff at the beginning where you know the snow planet and all
- 23:54that? It's much lauded, but you know
- 23:56what? You can?
- 23:57See, I do like him. You can see all the fucking
- 23:59polystyrene and that dreadful monster that kidnaps Luke
- 24:02Skywalker. It's the worst thing I've ever
- 24:04seen. I like that.
- 24:06Oh, you would. And I thought Cloud City looked
- 24:08really cheap as well. And you know what really bored
- 24:10me was all those interminable fucking scenes with Luke
- 24:13Skywalker and Yoda on the planet.
- 24:15Kept going back there. He's lifting up rocks.
- 24:18He's doing his yoga. I'm like, Oh my God, will you
- 24:21just move this along or like. It was a little bit long,
- 24:23especially when you've got all those extra deleted scenes in
- 24:25there as well. I think if you are into like all
- 24:28the Star Wars live, you're well into this stuff, then all of
- 24:31those scenes are just gripping for you because it's all the
- 24:33characters and it was character focus this movie.
- 24:36And I do usually like that, but I don't know, it really was sort
- 24:40of middle child syndrome. You know, I think there's only
- 24:41enough. Not the eldest that everyone
- 24:43likes, not the youngest who's always the favorite, the middle
- 24:46one that everyone just forgets about.
- 24:48There's only enough story for like one film and he stretched
- 24:50it over three. That's the problem.
- 24:52Yeah, but I thought the first and 3rd ones were really fun.
- 24:55This one wasn't fun, you know. It didn't have the humour to it.
- 24:58What do you like in the last 1 then?
- 25:01Oh, the Ewoks, well, they're amazing.
- 25:03I mean, you know, C3PO comes along and they think he's the
- 25:07God nails like. Going yeah, ah, I literally like
- 25:12every scene that I see. That's the only thing that I
- 25:16like. Did you know C3PO going?
- 25:18My people, my people, we will attack the Force.
- 25:24But I also thought that the whole thing about Luke Skywalker
- 25:28possibly going to the dark side, confronting his father at the
- 25:32end, the twist where his dad turns on Emperor Palpatine, all
- 25:37of that stuff was just great in. The new version, they have the
- 25:41new, new version. Now the ghosts at the end is I'm
- 25:46hating Christian. So yeah, I like that.
- 25:48That's a nice touch. Well, no.
- 25:49It looks sort of like a pornstar waiting for a scene.
- 25:52He does. He sort of got his hands on his
- 25:54hips, sort of smiling, going, yeah, that's why I'm going to
- 25:57bang in a minute. Poor actor who was originally in
- 26:01it. He's out now, Yeah.
- 26:05Who played Darth Vader? Is it?
- 26:08Yeah, it looks a bit like Churchill from Doctor Who.
- 26:10You know, sort of chubby man. I'd rather see Hayden
- 26:13Christianson, to be honest. But I thought that was although
- 26:17all these movies, right? They fucking wrap up so fast.
- 26:20They blow up the Death Star in the first one, they Luke
- 26:23Skywalker falls down a hole in the second one.
- 26:25And in the third one, the walks, the walks.
- 26:29Actually, I did have all the scenes added, didn't it?
- 26:31Of all the planets from the prequels, we saw Jarja Binks.
- 26:35The whole Galaxy was celebrating.
- 26:37Yeah, yeah, yeah. As a whole, though, I mean, I
- 26:39can see why it's popular. It is like balls to the wall
- 26:43adventure, isn't it? And just full of great set
- 26:47pieces and fun characters. Yeah, I absolutely get its
- 26:50appeal. It just didn't get me young so
- 26:51I've got no emotional attachment to it.
- 26:54They're just fun movies. I haven't, I haven't watched
- 26:56them. I have watched them.
- 26:58It's not like a religion to you, is it?
- 26:59No, you know, like you remember some of pagans.
- 27:02I do enjoy it. I do enjoy it.
- 27:04I wouldn't say I was a fan, but I would.
- 27:06I enjoy it and I was looking at reading maybe a Star Wars novel
- 27:09at some point. What's that?
- 27:12I don't know. A Star Wars novel?
- 27:13I'll find one. There's loads.
- 27:15There's literally thousands of them.
- 27:17The extended universe of Star Wars is enormous.
- 27:20I know what's next, OK. Return of the Jedi, Four stars
- 27:24again. 4 hamster wheels. Yeah, I'll give them.
- 27:27No, no, no, I'll give Empire. What was it called again?
- 27:29Not Empire of Death. Empire Strikes Back.
- 27:31Thank you, Empire Strikes Back. I'll give free too.
- 27:36Let's go to something different now.
- 27:38Chicago, this is your. Come on, boys, we're gonna paint
- 27:41the town. So I've.
- 27:44Never seen this before. I've never seen the play or
- 27:47whatever it is. What about you?
- 27:50You like? It I sort of set the cinema.
- 27:51I've seen it three times at the theatre.
- 27:56I think the songs are just incredible in this, Absolutely.
- 27:59But I do think this is a great production.
- 28:01The whole, you know, she had it coming in the in the prison, all
- 28:06done by a silhouette and that so, so beautiful.
- 28:09I had no idea what the story was at all.
- 28:12Well, you didn't seem to be not enjoying it.
- 28:16No, but I don't know if I, I don't know.
- 28:21It wasn't the most amazing thing that I've seen.
- 28:24Like the songs are great. I don't know, it's just not.
- 28:27I wouldn't choose to watch it. I think it's why.
- 28:29I've never watched it all these years.
- 28:32I think apart from the songs, it's got layers because it truly
- 28:35exposes the hypocrisy of the press who chase stories, and it
- 28:40exposes the hypocrisy of the legal system because the whole
- 28:44thing is about somebody who is guilty of murder getting off and
- 28:47how they use the press in order to sway the people.
- 28:51It is a clever movie, but yeah, like if you don't really like
- 28:55that period weird or that setting or the atmosphere of it,
- 28:58I don't. Know Catherine Jones is all
- 29:00right and. She was amazing.
- 29:02Apparently she was a monster though when they were making it.
- 29:05But Freddy is their worker by all accounts is lovely.
- 29:08Oh. My God.
- 29:09And Catherine Zeta Jones obviously had a lovely roasting
- 29:12around Jon Perky's house a lot of the time when she did that.
- 29:14Really happen? Yeah.
- 29:17She went out with Jon Perky's son.
- 29:19Right. So they could have been having a
- 29:21lovely dinner and she'd be like. I think only you.
- 29:24Only you. Suggest for like.
- 29:26Dinners together I. Can give you some tips.
- 29:32I just I just can't get my head around Catherine Zita Jones and
- 29:35John Pat. We've been almost related and
- 29:37happy. This Christmas together in me
- 29:392000s, I know it's before she did.
- 29:41So obviously a path at that point.
- 29:44So he's gonna go Catherine, can you get this job in Hollywood?
- 29:47Please yes, he could have done the Richard Gereau.
- 29:51Oh, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. I just, I don't know, I just
- 29:55can't get over those two people crossing piles.
- 29:58This is another 4 for me though. I really I think this is high
- 30:02energy. You need to be a skilled singer
- 30:05and performer to take part in this, and it's just fabulously
- 30:10catchy songs. I'll give it a three because it
- 30:12was just not. It was all right.
- 30:14I don't think I would choose to watch it again.
- 30:15And the songs are okay. I don't know, maybe it's just
- 30:20the setting or something, I'm just not really into it.
- 30:22Do you know which song I really like that no one seems to like
- 30:24cellophane. Mr. Cellophane could have been
- 30:30my name. Richard is very good in it.
- 30:32He's crazy, yeah. Is that the one he's?
- 30:35Saying you move us on. Does he sing that?
- 30:37No, that's. What does he sing that when?
- 30:39See, Ryan, he got cool. Yes.
- 30:41Oh, yes. Oh, yes.
- 30:42I guess. I guess they're both before the
- 30:44gum For the gum. Yes.
- 30:46Oh, yes. So yes, yes, yes.
- 30:47Oh, my poor dear Runaway Romance.
- 30:50She was great Earth and simple and Mama Mia, the press lady.
- 30:55If John Perry was starring in it, I would.
- 30:57Watch. Oh, for God's sake, move us on
- 30:59quick. John Perry is not in Chicago.
- 31:03OK, Talented Mr. Ripley next based.
- 31:07On I didn't think it was this, did I?
- 31:09I thought I put in Talented Mr. Ripley.
- 31:12I thought it was good role. Is it still the same actor?
- 31:15Matt Damon Yeah. That's why you got it mixed up.
- 31:17Anyway, Talented Mr. Ripley, Based on the novel by Patricia
- 31:20Highsmith. And you know what else she wrote
- 31:23that we've watched that you didn't like last time Cry The
- 31:27owl. You really?
- 31:28Didn't awful, so it's. The same author do.
- 31:31You know what? Actually, this had similar sort
- 31:34of discomforting scenes as Black Cry the Owl, didn't it?
- 31:37Yeah, she also wrote. Way better though.
- 31:39I think she wrote Brokeback Mountain as well.
- 31:41Two things. Two things that sell this movie.
- 31:43Yeah, Matt Damon is fucking incredible in.
- 31:47That in film studies, and I can't remember why we did a
- 31:50screening of it. I can't remember why we had a
- 31:52lecture on it, the scene. And the bow when he murders Jude
- 31:57Law. I, I was so uncomfortable to
- 32:01watch, but in a good way. I really was sitting there
- 32:04clenched up, you know? And I thought, OK, he's going to
- 32:07hurt him. He murders him horribly.
- 32:10And you really see the murder, oh, for like a couple of
- 32:13minutes. It's really horrible.
- 32:15So this is about sort of like obsession and identity you
- 32:19obviously. Can understand that and he's
- 32:21like. To me, and he's like a con man
- 32:22as well, isn't he? He is a Comer and the girlfriend
- 32:26right is on him. She she no, not on him like
- 32:29that. She's on to him.
- 32:31She knows he did it, and yeah, but.
- 32:33Right at the. End a bit in the apartment where
- 32:37she goes to say to him, I know you did it and he comes to War
- 32:41zone. You think he's going to get
- 32:42killed and then he's going out with Jack Davenport from Steven
- 32:45Moffitt Coupling, who's in this as a sort of gay love interest.
- 32:51He comes in at the last minute. This.
- 32:53Is like sort of mystery. It's not like a gay film.
- 32:56Filmed in Italy. I thought it was.
- 32:58Venice. Venice, Yeah, the scenery was
- 33:00absolutely. I'm really.
- 33:01Interested because there was they've made ATV series of it,
- 33:04an actual series. I can't remember what streaming
- 33:06it's on or anything, but I'd be interested to see how they could
- 33:09stretch this out. Do you know I I had warning
- 33:12bells on the face? There is a sequel.
- 33:15An hour. I had warning bells in the first
- 33:18half an hour. By the end I was absolutely
- 33:20hooked. It's a little bit slow to get
- 33:22going. It's quite, I don't know, it's
- 33:23all you're just following Matt Damon's character, building up
- 33:27this new identity, weaving his way into the life of this guy
- 33:31that he's eventually obsessed with.
- 33:33And they don't really know because they're all just sort of
- 33:35just having a great time and everything.
- 33:37They don't realize until it's too late.
- 33:39Due to Laws is so obsessed with himself, not the character he's
- 33:42playing, that he can't see that Matt Damon is obsessed with him.
- 33:46But he doesn't. He starts having sex with the
- 33:48woman, like, right in front of him and all that, making him
- 33:50feel really uncomfortable. Matt Damon.
- 33:52What, Like the talented Matt Damon, this should have been
- 33:56called. And he can't start playing that
- 33:58spy role, didn't he? And he did all of those, Yeah,
- 34:01which he was very good at. But this and goodwill hungry.
- 34:05Early on, isn't it? They really show what a what a
- 34:08diverse actor he is. I was, Yeah, I fall, hamster.
- 34:12Wheels. He's not seen it at all.
- 34:13Had you? No.
- 34:13No, no, no, no, no. But I was at by the end, I was
- 34:15completely gripped by the movie. Do you know what I'm going to
- 34:19say? 4 as well I keep.
- 34:19Agreeing we didn't agree about. Oh, apart from Chicago.
- 34:23Impasse strikes back. Yeah.
- 34:25Oh, OK. And then the next.
- 34:27We've just recently watched this.
- 34:29This was my choice. What was that?
- 34:31I love a Leonardo DiCaprio film. You too.
- 34:33Is it because you like to see a flash of his bum in the movies?
- 34:36He. Has.
- 34:37Got a last bum though. So you think we did?
- 34:39He just chooses really great. I said this about we did the
- 34:41Aviator last time with him, didn't we?
- 34:43Oh, very long. Yeah, that was long film.
- 34:45Actually, this was a long film as well.
- 34:47He. Chooses their space.
- 34:48So every couple of years Leonardo DiCaprio does a great
- 34:50film. He can pick and choose whatever
- 34:52he wants to do. And it was really great stories.
- 34:55And this is did I say what it was?
- 34:57No. OK.
- 34:58The Revenant, which was billed as a Western.
- 35:02Well, it is a Western because it's got Cowboys and engines in
- 35:05it. Yeah, so he's.
- 35:07Saying like it these days, Native Americans.
- 35:10Native. Yeah, yeah.
- 35:11So this is back in the day. I mean, it's not like a Western
- 35:16where you're expecting like it's in the desert or anything.
- 35:19This is in snow and ice in the mountains in wherever in
- 35:23America. I don't.
- 35:24Really know the territory. Yeah, I don't.
- 35:26Know that? Who knows?
- 35:27I mean the scenery will stark and stunning and the
- 35:32cinematography was on another level.
- 35:35I'm not sure I've ever seen such beautiful scenery in a movie.
- 35:39So you've got basically the Native Americans are after the
- 35:45American guys who are coming in there hunting for like furs and
- 35:49stuff. And Leonardo DiCaprio is their
- 35:52guide. So he's on the American side,
- 35:54but he also in flashback had relations with a Native American
- 36:01lady and had a son. So the son is with him and the
- 36:04Americans and they're, they're like, we've got to get out of
- 36:07here. They're all coming.
- 36:08And then it's, I mean, that opening scene is a bit of an
- 36:11attack between both of them. And it's very, it's very
- 36:14gruesome. It's.
- 36:16Disgusting. There's lots of blood.
- 36:17It's very. Realistic.
- 36:20With bows and, you know, with the arrows going into people.
- 36:23Shoot us to that director, because he put that set piece on
- 36:28the screen with such authenticity.
- 36:30But it is brutal. It was too much for me, so I
- 36:34can't stand seeing it. No, it was arrows going through
- 36:37people's heads. Yeah.
- 36:38And oh God, people were dying left right in the center.
- 36:41Makes you feel very uncomfortable.
- 36:43But then even worse then is the character that Leonardo, I'm
- 36:47going to call him Leo. Leo plays he.
- 36:50Gets attacked. By a bear, oh, visceral.
- 36:53I mean, it's a CGI bear, but he's again, no.
- 36:56Was it? Yeah, obviously, but it wasn't.
- 36:59So really it's. Clored him.
- 37:00It's not letting him go. It is biting into him.
- 37:03Do. You know what it was throwing
- 37:04him around the camera. Oh my God, the camera is fixed
- 37:07to Leonardo DiCaprio, right? So you are literally being
- 37:10mauled by that bear yourself. You are being thrown around with
- 37:14him. So you feel like it's just, it's
- 37:17so realistic. And basically unpleasantly
- 37:21realistic American guys, like he's really badly injured, he's
- 37:24going to die. They try and help him, but
- 37:27obviously they need to get on because they've been pursued.
- 37:30They basically he's left to die and the rest.
- 37:33Of the hill and his son is killed.
- 37:35And his son is killed, so he's left to die.
- 37:38And he can't speak. He has hardly any dialogue
- 37:41because, I mean, his throat's been ripped apart by a bear.
- 37:44So for about the next hour and a half, it's basically.
- 37:48Don't. You him surviving on his own.
- 37:50He's literally throwing himself down down rivers.
- 37:53Oh my God. And the worst moment, the
- 37:55shocking moment, I mean, it's all.
- 37:57Gruesome. Never mind all the people dying,
- 37:59Mark was appalled when so. He's on a horse and he's being
- 38:02pursued by the Native Americans after him and everything.
- 38:06And he's not galloping there, galloping after each other.
- 38:08And there's bows and arrows and all of that stuff.
- 38:10And then suddenly he gets with and it's the edge of a Cliff and
- 38:14him and the horse go off the edge of the Cliff and the horse
- 38:18falls down splat. He gets saved because he falls
- 38:21in some trees. And so you've got this
- 38:23splattered horse and and then it starts to snow.
- 38:26So to survive, this is how this is the tip.
- 38:29This is just a typical day in all of this hour and a half of
- 38:31him surviving, he has to cut open the horse, take all its
- 38:34guts out and sort of get in it naked to.
- 38:38You see it all. Survive and.
- 38:40You see everything. You see him pull open the flaps,
- 38:43take out the organs. He then climbs into the off for
- 38:47himself and it's like it is warm in there because you can see the
- 38:51smoke hitting the ice, you know. So whatever that prop is, they
- 38:56warms him up and well, you do see his bum at that point when
- 39:00he goes in. But I have to say, right, I am
- 39:05so pleased we watched this because it is the work of highly
- 39:08skilled people. And I mean, the actors, the
- 39:11directors, the cinematographers, everybody, the cinematography,
- 39:14they truly pushed film making in this movie.
- 39:17Yeah. Like the separate I was reading
- 39:19on Wiki and apparently the writer was going, OK, well,
- 39:22we'll do this and the director's going, no, go, push further.
- 39:25I'll put it on the screen, I'll make it happen.
- 39:28And he kept, he kept saying that the director was pushing him to,
- 39:31to, you know, like the bear attack and all of that.
- 39:35I will never watch this again. It was.
- 39:38I mean, it's an experience we colour we had did it in three.
- 39:41We had to do it in three hours, about 3 hour long session.
- 39:44Hours, 40 minutes. The actual film I don't know if
- 39:48I could sit in. The it's not to experience no
- 39:50what in one go. In one go I would be a bit, I
- 39:53mean, you'd be totally into it. And no, immersed, I think you'd
- 39:57feel like you've been assaulted by the end if you.
- 39:59I wouldn't. 3 hours it's not. In 3D or anything.
- 40:01Oh my God. Oh my God, that horse.
- 40:03Got I mean lift, I've gotta say, right?
- 40:05I can stand, I can stomach quite a lot.
- 40:07I I can watch You didn't like it.
- 40:09Always crazy, crazy anatomy scenes that you turned away from
- 40:13Grey's Anatomy. Jesus, but the fight at the end
- 40:17of this where Tom Hardy and Leonardo.
- 40:19Tom Hardy in it. Literally RIP each other to
- 40:22pieces. Yeah, it is so so.
- 40:26He chops his fingers. Unbelievably violent and
- 40:30they're, you know, they're stabbing each other and it is a
- 40:33fight to the. Wild West.
- 40:34It's horrible. And I I literally just, I put my
- 40:38head in your chest and was like, I can't watch this anymore.
- 40:40Tell me when it's over. Yeah.
- 40:43So I mean, I'll give it 4 or because I think it was an
- 40:46incredible movie. I can't say I enjoyed it though.
- 40:51No, no. Oh.
- 40:52No, I did, I think glad. I've been waiting to watch it
- 40:55for a few years. You know, those books of like,
- 40:57you know, 1000 movies you must see before you die because,
- 41:02yeah, they're important to cinema.
- 41:04I think this is one of those movies, you know, But it
- 41:07wouldn't turn up in 1000 movies to sit back, kick your feet up
- 41:11and enjoy. No, No, maybe not.
- 41:14No, there we are. That's the end of the movie
- 41:17show. Have we chosen anything out for
- 41:19the next movie? You chose Jurassic Park next.
- 41:22Welcome to Jurassic Park. Hi, John.
- 41:28Oh, hi, John. Hello, John.
- 41:30What's? That.
- 41:31You know where And that's the DNA example and also and also
- 41:36the bit with the arm. Mr. Arnold.
- 41:39Mr. Arnold. Mr. Arnold.
- 41:40Thank God. I only remembered the bit where
- 41:44the man's on the loo. Tyrannosaurus Rex comes along
- 41:48and eats him. Imagine being eaten by
- 41:50Tyrannosaurus Rex on the loo. What a way to go.
- 41:54Oh well, sorry to tell the grandkids.
- 41:56Well, until we see all those fabulous 90s CGI dinosaurs,
- 42:01yeah. Some great films that we've
- 42:02recommended. Well, I'll come away now in my
- 42:05pork chop dress. And what's about?
- 42:10What's about? Anyway, see you later see.
- 42:16You next time.
