- 0:00When seekers take up the spiritual path, they try to
- 0:03follow the guideline to reject desire.
- 0:07They will frequently say I don't desire anything.
- 0:11In many cases, however, this is an obfuscation by the vital
- 0:14nature, manipulating the mind to accept something which is not
- 0:19entirely accurate. Let's break this down.
- 0:24One thing that may occur is that the individual actually is
- 0:27having his needs met one way or the other and need not seek out
- 0:31or choose anything as it is already there for him.
- 0:35The desire in such a case could only be seen if the
- 0:39circumstances would be changed and the various items or people
- 0:43providing the support were removed from the picture.
- 0:47Would the individual still say they have no desires when the
- 0:52abundance is no longer there providing it to them without a
- 0:56lot of thought or effort? Another thing that occurs is
- 1:00that the secret tries to offload the desire and its fulfillment
- 1:04to someone else, and knowing how things generally work out, he is
- 1:10able to accept the result. Another is simply that the
- 1:15desire is there, but the vital nature is telling the mind that
- 1:18it is not really a desire, but something else.
- 1:22As long as the mind is willing to go along with that, things
- 1:26continue as they were, and the vital has its desires met.
- 1:31Even our prayers reveal the desires lurking in our being.
- 1:37When the prayers are conditional such that our love, support, and
- 1:41action are based on having our wishes met, we are projecting
- 1:46desires onto our relationship to the Divine when we pray for a
- 1:51specific wish to be fulfilled. Money, relationship recognition,
- 1:57etcetera. We are expressing desires all be
- 2:01it in a prayerful way. When the psychic being comes
- 2:06forward it changes from a demand type of prayer to a self giving
- 2:11type of prayer. Thy will be done aligns more
- 2:15with the psychic approach than any request for a specific
- 2:19result. Similarly, when the separation
- 2:23of the witness consciousness from the external nature occurs,
- 2:27the seeker who identifies with that witness consciousness will
- 2:31find that he harbours no desires.
- 2:34He observes as the bird who acts as the observer, the external
- 2:39nature which eats the sweet fruit of the tree.
- 2:43In the colorful language of the Upanishad, there's an apocryphal
- 2:49tale that bears repeating. The divine singer Narod is
- 2:53travelling through the world and comes across a Yogi practicing
- 2:56austere penances for many years. The Yogi asks Narod how much
- 3:02longer until he obtains liberation.
- 3:05Narod replies 4 more lifetimes. The Yogi is disconsolate that
- 3:11after all that effort he has to undergo such a long additional
- 3:15period of austerity to fulfill his desire for liberation.
- 3:21His expectation for early liberation and the desire that
- 3:24fueled his efforts have been frustrated.
- 3:29Norad continues on his way and comes across a devotee singing
- 3:32and dancing with ecstatic abandoned under a tree.
- 3:36This devotee asks the same question.
- 3:39When will I achieve liberation? Norad replies, As many leaves as
- 3:46there are on this tree, that is how many lifetimes you will have
- 3:50to undergo before achieving liberation.
- 3:54Hearing this, the devotee sheds tears of joy and in an ecstatic
- 3:58feeling declares that he is blessed to have the divine near
- 4:03him. As he works through the process,
- 4:05for however long it takes, a voice comes down out of heaven
- 4:10and advises him, You are liberated this moment.
- 4:15We see here the difference between desire and absence of
- 4:19desire, Sri Aurobindo notes quote.
- 4:25Everything which it hankers after is desirable to the vital.
- 4:30But the desire has to be rejected.
- 4:33I won't. Desire is quite the right thing
- 4:35to say. Even if I don't desire cannot
- 4:39yet be said by the vital, still there is something in the being
- 4:44that can even say I don't desire and refuse to recognize the
- 4:49vital desire as part of the true Being.
- 4:52It is that consciousness which the peace and power bring that
- 4:57has to be recognized as the true I and made permanent in front.
