- 0:11Hello friends, it's shown here. It's Wednesday, it is the 3rd of
- 0:16April and I am so delighted that you have clicked on, tapped on,
- 0:20swiped on whatever method of selection you have chosen on
- 0:25this podcast. And here we are ready to take on
- 0:28another chapter, take on another section of God's Words that we
- 0:32will dive into and learn a bit more about God.
- 0:35And this is a fascinating part of the story where David will go
- 0:39on conquest after conquest and he will be so successful and he
- 0:44will really shore up this incredible dominance and
- 0:48stability that his son Solomon will enjoy.
- 0:51And the the fruits of that time will be to build up Israel into
- 0:55its high points in history and all that splendour.
- 0:58And the reason that can happen is during David's time, well,
- 1:03Egypt and Mesopotamia they are busy dealing with other things
- 1:06to to bother about going and trying to expand their territory
- 1:11into the space between them. And so all these small Syro
- 1:15Palestinian nations are left to battle it out together.
- 1:18And this is where Israel really comes into its own and shores up
- 1:23its space for generations to come.
- 1:26But that is all to come. We are just witnessing the part
- 1:30of the story where David is going to come to the throne and
- 1:34begin his rule. So let's read it together, shall
- 1:36we? Let's read together Second
- 1:38Samuel, chapter 2. After this, David asked the
- 1:51Lord, should I move back to one of the towns of Judah?
- 1:56Yes, the Lord replied. Then David asked Which town
- 2:00should I go to? To Hebron?
- 2:03The Lord answered. David's two wives were a high
- 2:06loam from Jezreel and Abigail, the widow of Nabil from Carmel.
- 2:12Sir David and his wives and his men and their families all moved
- 2:16to Judah, and they settled in the villages near Hebron.
- 2:20Then the men of Judah came to David and anointed him king over
- 2:25the people of Judah. When David heard that the men of
- 2:28Jabesh Gilead had buried Saul, he sent them this message.
- 2:33May the Lord bless you for being so loyal to your master soul and
- 2:37giving him a decent burial. May the Lord be loyal to you in
- 2:41return and reward you with his unfailing love.
- 2:45And I, too, will reward you for what you have done now that soul
- 2:50is dead. I ask you to be my strong and
- 2:53loyal subjects, like the people of Judah who have anointed me as
- 2:56their new king. But Abna son Abner, the
- 3:00commander of Saul's army, had already gone to Mahanaim with
- 3:05Saul's son Ishbosheth. There he proclaimed Ishbosheth
- 3:09king over Gilead, Jezreel, Ephraim, Benjamin and the land
- 3:14of the Asharites and all the rest of Israel.
- 3:18Ishbosheth Solson was 40 years old when he became king and he
- 3:23ruled from Maha name for two years.
- 3:26Meanwhile, the people of Judah remained loyal to David.
- 3:30David made Hebron his capital and he ruled as King of Judah
- 3:34for 7 1/2 years. One day, Abner LED Ishbosheth's
- 3:39troops from Mahanaim to Gibian. About the same time, Joab, son
- 3:46of Zeruiah, LED David's troops out and met them at the Pool of
- 3:50Gibeon. The two groups sat down there,
- 3:52facing each other from opposite sides of the pool.
- 3:56Then, Abner suggested to Joab. Let's have a few of our warriors
- 4:00fight hand to hand here in front of us.
- 4:04All right, Joe, about greed. So 12 men were chosen to fight
- 4:08from each side, 12 men of Benjamin representing
- 4:12Ishbosheth, son of Saul, and 12 representing David.
- 4:17Each one grabbed his opponent by the hair and thrust his sword
- 4:20into the other side, so that all of them died.
- 4:24So this place at Gibeon has been known ever since as the Field of
- 4:28Swords. A fierce battle followed that
- 4:31day, and Abner and the men of Israel were defeated by the
- 4:34forces of David, Joab, Abishai and Asahel.
- 4:39The three sons of Jeremiah were among David's forces that day.
- 4:44A sale could run like a gazelle, and he began chasing Abner.
- 4:48He pursued him relentlessly, not stopping for anything.
- 4:52When Abner looked back and saw him coming, he called out.
- 4:55His that you a say? Hell, yes it is, he replied.
- 4:59Go fight someone else, Abner warned.
- 5:02Take on one of the younger men and strip him of his weapons.
- 5:06Better say he'll kept right on chasing Abner again, Abner
- 5:10shouted to him. Get away from here.
- 5:13I don't want to kill you. How could I ever face your
- 5:15brother? Joe.
- 5:16Abigail, but Asahel refused to turn back, so Abner thrust the
- 5:21butt end of his spear through a sahil's stomach and the spear
- 5:25came out through his back. He stumbled to the ground and
- 5:29died there, and everyone who came by that spot stopped and
- 5:33stood still when they saw a Sahill lying there.
- 5:38When Johan B and Abishai found out what had happened, they set
- 5:42out after Abner. The sun was just going down as
- 5:46they arrived at the hill of Amma near Gaya, along the road to the
- 5:50wilderness of Gibeon. Abner's troops from the tribe of
- 5:54Benjamin regrouped there at the top of the hill to take a stand.
- 5:58Abner shouted down to Joab. Must we always be killing each
- 6:02other? Don't you realise that
- 6:04bitterness is the only result? When will you call off your men
- 6:08from chasing their Israelite brothers?
- 6:11Then Joab said. God only knows what would have
- 6:14happened if you hadn't spoken for.
- 6:16We would have chased you all night if necessary.
- 6:19So Joab blew the Rams. Horn and his men stopped chasing
- 6:24the troops of Israel. All that night, Abner and his
- 6:28men retreated through the Jordan Valley.
- 6:30They crossed the Jordan River, travelling all through the
- 6:34morning, and didn't stop until they arrived at Mahanam.
- 6:39Meanwhile, Joe B and his men also returned home.
- 6:42When Joeb counted his casualties, he discovered that
- 6:46only 19 men were missing in addition to Asahel.
- 6:50But 300 and 60s of Abner's men had been killed, all from the
- 6:55tribe of Benjamin. Joab and his men took a Sahill's
- 6:58body to Bethlehem and buried him there in his father's tomb.
- 7:03Then they travelled all night and reached Hebron at Daybreak.
- 7:17Jesus, you know how to keep your eye on what's most important.
- 7:23Lord, continue to shape us. That our eye can rest on the
- 7:28thing that matters. That we can look up from the
- 7:31fray around us and see you and see your goal and your prize.
- 7:36That we can keep on striving to be closer to you and more like
- 7:40you. And that we don't get so
- 7:43convinced that the thing that we're doing must continue to its
- 7:47natural end, even if it makes no sense anymore.
- 7:50Thank you for the wisdom of your scriptures that show that when
- 7:53we are going down one path, totally determined to see it to
- 7:58its end, that you can pull us out.
- 8:01You can draw us back to you to a different way, to a better way.
- 8:07May that better way be our natural way.
- 8:10Lord, just continue to shape us, Continue to draw us always to
- 8:14your will over ours. Thank you, Jesus, for all that
- 8:18you've done for us and for continuing, even though we're
- 8:22broken and keep on going our own way, continuing to draw us back,
- 8:27shape us, mould us, use us now. We love you, Jesus, and it's all
- 8:33in your name that we pray. Amen.
