- 0:30[SPEAKER_05]: What's up, guys?
- 0:31[SPEAKER_05]: My truck.
- 0:32[SPEAKER_05]: Listen, the sports car CEO is current.
- 0:35[SPEAKER_05]: Buff on hand.
- 0:51[SPEAKER_07]: current is back in Manhattan and all as well with the world.
- 0:55[SPEAKER_07]: That's right.
- 0:56[SPEAKER_07]: That's right.
- 0:56[SPEAKER_02]: It's good to be back.
- 0:57[SPEAKER_07]: But before the pregame here, we're pretty sure I was like, I hear sirens and horns.
- 1:02[SPEAKER_07]: I'm like, we're back, baby.
- 1:03[SPEAKER_02]: We're back, baby.
- 1:05[SPEAKER_02]: We are back.
- 1:06[SPEAKER_02]: I was thinking, I'm like, how are we going to, how am I going to stop these horns?
- 1:10[SPEAKER_02]: And there was like a guy with a boom box outside on thirty four street right outside the garden playing his music and singing along.
- 1:16[SPEAKER_02]: I'm like, this is the disaster.
- 1:18[SPEAKER_07]: Here we go.
- 1:18[SPEAKER_07]: Well, boys, summer is officially coming to a close.
- 1:21[SPEAKER_07]: I know all of us are getting back into the saddle with kids getting back in school and we're getting on the routine here.
- 1:27[SPEAKER_07]: We have a really special episode today.
- 1:29[SPEAKER_07]: We got a special guest, a super special guest, gentlemen, that we're going to announce here just a second.
- 1:34[SPEAKER_07]: But as we kick off every sports card CEO episode, a little roundtable from the boys on how our weeks have been, both personal and in the card world.
- 1:42[SPEAKER_07]: So, current year and slot number one, buddy, kick us off this week.
- 1:45[SPEAKER_02]: Well, summer is officially over.
- 1:47[SPEAKER_02]: You know, we back from Hampton, yesterday back into the city, first day back in the office.
- 1:51[SPEAKER_02]: So a lot of catch up for me.
- 1:53[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, the amount of packages that were on my table from a card perspective was, I mean, it's disgusting.
- 1:59[SPEAKER_02]: It gave me anxiety.
- 2:00[SPEAKER_02]: I thought things I didn't even know that I bought.
- 2:02[SPEAKER_02]: Like, is a good thing there are some trustworthy people here in the hobby because I would have been scam.
- 2:07[SPEAKER_02]: I could have been scammed out of thousands of dollars here, not knowing.
- 2:10[SPEAKER_02]: One of the kids start school tomorrow.
- 2:12[SPEAKER_02]: The rest next week.
- 2:13[SPEAKER_02]: Rough day yesterday, but.
- 2:15[SPEAKER_02]: Rugged now.
- 2:15[SPEAKER_02]: I've been kind of quiet on the car and did buy another Connor Griffin orange tense.
- 2:20[SPEAKER_02]: That was just graded that that that that came our way Gary and I went in on that together, actually, because I'm a nice guy and I get Gary in on these things, but I just been laying low the last week.
- 2:30[SPEAKER_02]: I was enjoying the last week of the summer.
- 2:32[SPEAKER_02]: What about you, Baba?
- 2:33[SPEAKER_04]: Well, I am on week two of taking a little break from from cards.
- 2:38[SPEAKER_04]: And it's kind of been I needed it after the summer that I've had and the travel that I had.
- 2:43[SPEAKER_04]: I've kind of laid low.
- 2:44[SPEAKER_04]: Uh, I could feel currently in my last week, which is weird.
- 2:47[SPEAKER_04]: Because normally, he's kind of still on go.
- 2:49[SPEAKER_04]: I kind of took a chill pill, but I think it was the right time to take a chill pill.
- 2:53[SPEAKER_04]: We've got the new release coming out in eight days.
- 2:56[SPEAKER_04]: Is that right now, Kern?
- 2:57[SPEAKER_04]: Eight days?
- 2:58[SPEAKER_04]: Is that the countdown at this point for the next release?
- 3:00[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, sir, September tenth, I think.
- 3:01[SPEAKER_04]: So I need to kind of that middle refresh.
- 3:04[SPEAKER_04]: You know, to be able to have my mind clear, what do I want to buy next?
- 3:07[SPEAKER_04]: What do I want to sell right now?
- 3:08[SPEAKER_04]: What do I want to do going into this fall?
- 3:11[SPEAKER_04]: And so also needed a little reset at the farm.
- 3:14[SPEAKER_04]: A ham came down and visited a month or so ago.
- 3:17[SPEAKER_04]: The house that I'm building on the other side of the lake is getting near the end.
- 3:21[SPEAKER_04]: And so at the end,
- 3:21[SPEAKER_04]: And there's a lot of push of getting the flooring in, getting all the stuff ready.
- 3:25[SPEAKER_04]: And not to mention, it's almost deer season down here in Georgia.
- 3:28[SPEAKER_04]: So getting all the food plots ready and getting everything going.
- 3:31[SPEAKER_04]: So been busy on that front football with the kids is rolling full steam.
- 3:35[SPEAKER_04]: But last night, I did get a card deal done.
- 3:38[SPEAKER_04]: A little mat got me hooked up and I actually picked up a Connor Griffin orange shot out the little mat.
- 3:44[SPEAKER_04]: And that kind of got the juices flowing again last night.
- 3:46[SPEAKER_04]: I was up for about eleven last night scouring eBay looking for what I've missed.
- 3:51[SPEAKER_04]: So what was the great on that?
- 3:53[SPEAKER_02]: What was the great on that corner?
- 3:55[SPEAKER_04]: That's a eight point five.
- 3:57[SPEAKER_04]: That's nice.
- 3:58[SPEAKER_02]: Yep.
- 3:59[SPEAKER_02]: I try to get you involved.
- 4:00[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, you just have not been referring my text.
- 4:03[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I've been doing a lot of that lately to everybody.
- 4:06[SPEAKER_02]: It just kind of been ignoring texts.
- 4:07[SPEAKER_02]: I'm in that phase like norm messages these days.
- 4:10[SPEAKER_02]: All right.
- 4:11[SPEAKER_02]: We have to say sorry.
- 4:12[SPEAKER_02]: Love you still.
- 4:13[SPEAKER_02]: Thanks man.
- 4:13[SPEAKER_07]: So hamhouse had a whirlwind of a week last week as you boys know.
- 4:20[SPEAKER_07]: I lead a nonprofit group called Faith in Business and we had our kickoff event both in Wilmington and in Raleigh.
- 4:27[SPEAKER_07]: So we had capacity that our largest crowds that we've had so far.
- 4:31[SPEAKER_07]: Just love being in front of people in that environment.
- 4:33[SPEAKER_07]: It's kind of my heartbeat.
- 4:35[SPEAKER_07]: I get to speak and share and stuff that has been put on my heart.
- 4:38[SPEAKER_07]: So that was super cool.
- 4:39[SPEAKER_07]: One of the board members for our nonprofit invited us to go to the NC State football game, kicking off the season, the Wolfpack took down the Cross State rivalry, ECU, the pirates, and so that's always a big little in-state game.
- 4:53[SPEAKER_07]: So that was good.
- 4:54[SPEAKER_07]: And then we gled in for punishment.
- 4:56[SPEAKER_07]: We decided to drive four hours up to the outer banks of North Carolina and we got invited to go offshore fishing.
- 5:03[SPEAKER_07]: Marlon fishing actually, seventy miles out in the ocean on a beautiful sixty-foot sport fisher.
- 5:08[SPEAKER_07]: Our good buddy, Bryant Monogue, had us on board and we caught four white marlins with the twins and myself and another friend and so it has been a bit of a whirlwind.
- 5:20[SPEAKER_07]: So I'm just getting back into the saddle after Labor Day.
- 5:22[SPEAKER_07]: A little mat as we've kind of mentioned previously is taken over the majority of hamhouse sports on the card side.
- 5:27[SPEAKER_07]: This weekend, there's a local show.
- 5:29[SPEAKER_07]: He had a really cool fine, a sealed
- 5:31[SPEAKER_07]: Nineteen eighty-six flier pack.
- 5:36[SPEAKER_07]: Michael Jordan's rookie near rookie card year, the Fleeyer sealed pack.
- 5:41[SPEAKER_07]: And it's one of those deals where I don't know that we'll ever open it, but it's really cool to see a sealed Fleeyer pack sitting on the shelf at Hamhouse Sports, right beside our Michael Jordan rookie card.
- 5:51[SPEAKER_07]: So you never know what's in the pack.
- 5:53[SPEAKER_07]: Have a little fun.
- 5:54[SPEAKER_07]: Open the pack.
- 5:55[SPEAKER_07]: No, no.
- 5:56[SPEAKER_07]: Listen, I'm showing self restraint and control.
- 5:59[SPEAKER_07]: There has to be somebody on this podcast that's a rain in.
- 6:02[SPEAKER_07]: So I'm not being said, it was a good week, but
- 6:06[SPEAKER_07]: Speaking of little Matt, we have our one minute with little Matt.
- 6:09[SPEAKER_00]: What is up everybody?
- 6:10[SPEAKER_00]: This is one minute with little Matt.
- 6:13[SPEAKER_00]: All right, here's some big comes for the week starting off.
- 6:16[SPEAKER_00]: Connor Griffin blues stay hot.
- 6:18[SPEAKER_00]: Griffin blue rolls were always around a thousand dollars, but they've recently trimmed it up and the last one did over eight hundred, eighteen hundred dollars.
- 6:26[SPEAKER_00]: So absolutely massive sale there.
- 6:29[SPEAKER_00]: Next, a Camino True Orange PSNI, the
- 6:33[SPEAKER_00]: That seems like an absolute steal.
- 6:35[SPEAKER_00]: If you listen to last week's podcast, you'd know Gary's infinite infamous comment about Roman Anthony and how he thought Roman Anthony was overvalued.
- 6:44[SPEAKER_00]: I don't agree with that, but I think that Junior Caminera is definitely undervalued compared to guys like Roman Anthony.
- 6:51[SPEAKER_00]: And then a JJ weatherhole black x-fractor PSA-ten sold for fifty one hundred dollars and then one private sale
- 7:00[SPEAKER_00]: is the Kevin McGonagall my first Bowman auto blue had offers come in and over ten thousand dollars.
- 7:07[SPEAKER_00]: Those are the comps the week.
- 7:08[SPEAKER_00]: I hope you enjoy the rest of the podcast piece.
- 7:11[SPEAKER_07]: All right, boy.
- 7:12[SPEAKER_07]: So, you know, little Matt alluded to a big sale on a Connor Griffin blue and who better to discuss a sale of a Connor Griffin blue than Connor Griffin himself.
- 7:25[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, man.
- 7:26[SPEAKER_01]: How y'all doing?
- 7:27[SPEAKER_07]: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the sports card CEO.
- 7:30[SPEAKER_07]: The number one prospect in Major League Baseball, Connor Griffin.
- 7:34[SPEAKER_02]: I'm doing brother.
- 7:36[SPEAKER_02]: Good man.
- 7:36[SPEAKER_02]: Good man.
- 7:37[SPEAKER_02]: Thank you for joining us.
- 7:38[SPEAKER_02]: So we all have, we're all going to have some questions for you here.
- 7:41[SPEAKER_02]: Actually, the first question I have is not from any of us.
- 7:44[SPEAKER_02]: It's from a good friend of mine.
- 7:46[SPEAKER_02]: His name is Mike Trout.
- 7:47[SPEAKER_02]: And his question to you is what your biggest bokeh.
- 7:51[SPEAKER_01]: biggest bokeh.
- 7:52[SPEAKER_01]: I just got one last Christmas.
- 7:54[SPEAKER_01]: So this will be my first year season as shooting the boat.
- 7:58[SPEAKER_01]: So haven't haven't got one on the ground yet with it, but maybe I can answer that question in a few months.
- 8:03[SPEAKER_04]: Is it a math?
- 8:04[SPEAKER_04]: Is it a math use at least?
- 8:05[SPEAKER_01]: No, my first one's a bear.
- 8:07[SPEAKER_01]: Bear, okay.
- 8:08[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, okay.
- 8:09[SPEAKER_01]: I'm just getting into it.
- 8:10[SPEAKER_01]: So I've kind of heard Matthews is the way to go.
- 8:12[SPEAKER_01]: So I might be going that way soon.
- 8:14[SPEAKER_02]: Connor, are you aware that you, you have a big fan in Trump?
- 8:18[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't even know my trail knew my name too.
- 8:21[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, if, you know, he knows your name.
- 8:23[SPEAKER_02]: He's got your cards.
- 8:25[SPEAKER_02]: Your constant conversation in our conversations.
- 8:29[SPEAKER_02]: Big fan.
- 8:30[SPEAKER_02]: That's great here.
- 8:31[SPEAKER_04]: You know what's funny?
- 8:32[SPEAKER_04]: You know what's funny Connor?
- 8:33[SPEAKER_04]: I was at the future's game this year and you're out there warming up.
- 8:36[SPEAKER_04]: I'm watching you on the field.
- 8:38[SPEAKER_04]: My kids are beside me and it literally had the feel the way all are built between you and trout.
- 8:44[SPEAKER_04]: You're like trout is a short stop and I had told, you know, current this and then so we actually have something coming your way at some point with hopefully with Mr. trout here.
- 8:54[SPEAKER_02]: If you want to talk a little more about that, current.
- 8:56[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 8:57[SPEAKER_02]: So this was kind of a joint idea.
- 9:02[SPEAKER_02]: But we're going to have to get you.
- 9:03[SPEAKER_02]: We're going to have to find the right card.
- 9:05[SPEAKER_02]: We're going to get like three of them.
- 9:07[SPEAKER_02]: One for Gary and I, one for you, one for Mike and have you have you both in scribe it and sign it in the same card and make and hand number one of three, two of three and three.
- 9:19[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 9:20[SPEAKER_04]: And what was that?
- 9:20[SPEAKER_04]: What was what was what was Trout wanted to say on it?
- 9:22[SPEAKER_04]: Well, what did Trout have?
- 9:24[SPEAKER_02]: from one number one prospect to another.
- 9:26[SPEAKER_02]: And have you shot it?
- 9:28[SPEAKER_01]: I think we make a fourth.
- 9:30[SPEAKER_01]: Can we make a fourth?
- 9:30[SPEAKER_01]: Can we make a fourth?
- 9:32[SPEAKER_01]: Can we make a fourth?
- 9:33[SPEAKER_04]: Can we make a fourth?
- 9:34[SPEAKER_04]: Can we make a fourth in a fifth?
- 9:35[SPEAKER_04]: One for Connor and one for Am here.
- 9:37[SPEAKER_02]: I was like, I got him feeling left out over here.
- 9:40[SPEAKER_02]: Like, I'm out love y'all, but come on.
- 9:43[SPEAKER_02]: Well, Scott, Scott, Gary, Connor's going to get one and Michael get one and then being you will cut it in half.
- 9:54[SPEAKER_02]: Speaking of cards, you know, I kind of want to lead off the discussion with, you know, we spoke the other night when you were with Valor and Caleb and and Sever.
- 10:02[SPEAKER_02]: Have you always been in car into cars?
- 10:04[SPEAKER_02]: You're just starting to get into it.
- 10:06[SPEAKER_02]: Is this on your own or is this kind of like a forced entry into the hobby?
- 10:11[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think since I got drafted, I've kind of got into it.
- 10:15[SPEAKER_01]: You know, no, my own card was in a
- 10:17[SPEAKER_01]: in a box, I've been kind of chasing open impacts and trying to get my stuff.
- 10:22[SPEAKER_01]: My dad's always been into cards.
- 10:24[SPEAKER_01]: He has some Michael Jordan stuff from way back.
- 10:29[SPEAKER_01]: It's been around the house.
- 10:30[SPEAKER_01]: I've never really got too much into it, but now I'm getting interested in trying to see what I can find.
- 10:36[SPEAKER_02]: Do you have interested in collecting your own cards?
- 10:39[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think trying to chase some pretty cool cards of mine, I think that'd be a fun thing to do.
- 10:45[SPEAKER_04]: Do people back home?
- 10:46[SPEAKER_04]: Do you know if people back home that kind of started to collect you?
- 10:49[SPEAKER_04]: Once you got drafted and kind of like, hey, I got to get your stuff like buddies or family members.
- 10:53[SPEAKER_04]: You know, people been collecting you?
- 10:55[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, there's there's a lot of people that will send me pictures of cars.
- 10:59[SPEAKER_01]: They, you know, about the eBay, but you know, it's a lot of just the base cards.
- 11:03[SPEAKER_01]: I haven't seen many numbered cars that people were found.
- 11:05[SPEAKER_01]: And so, but I think there's a ton of people out there trying to at least have one card of me.
- 11:09[SPEAKER_07]: So along those lawns cars, is it weird that grown men are collecting images of you?
- 11:14[SPEAKER_07]: Like, how do you feel about this?
- 11:19[SPEAKER_07]: And there's two of them that are really on this podcast right now.
- 11:24[SPEAKER_01]: Hey, yeah, hobby's a hobby.
- 11:26[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I don't think you're ever, you know, two old be collecting players.
- 11:29[SPEAKER_01]: So I think it's pretty cool.
- 11:31[SPEAKER_02]: I love it.
- 11:32[SPEAKER_02]: Turn it forty one next month and I'm collecting a what do you?
- 11:35[SPEAKER_02]: Nineteen and you're all I'm having dreams about your red cards pretty quick.
- 11:41[SPEAKER_04]: That's not creepy at all.
- 11:42[SPEAKER_04]: Not creepy at all.
- 11:45[SPEAKER_02]: What cards of yours do you have?
- 11:47[SPEAKER_02]: What autograph cards you have?
- 11:48[SPEAKER_02]: Do you have any number parallels to you have?
- 11:51[SPEAKER_02]: Just based.
- 11:52[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I don't have anything.
- 11:53[SPEAKER_01]: I just have pretty much a ton of base cards.
- 11:55[SPEAKER_01]: I don't have any number ones at all.
- 11:57[SPEAKER_02]: All right.
- 11:57[SPEAKER_02]: Well, you know, we kind of spoke about this briefly on the other night day, but we're going to get you started with your collection.
- 12:03[SPEAKER_02]: But half of the sports cards that you know, we're going to give to you this Connor Griffin black true black out of ten auto.
- 12:10[SPEAKER_02]: And we're going to we're going to get it slapped up for you.
- 12:12[SPEAKER_02]: And I'll be first addition to to the collection.
- 12:15[SPEAKER_02]: All right.
- 12:15[SPEAKER_02]: That's awesome.
- 12:16[SPEAKER_02]: Are you, are you, I mean, I assume that's the first edition to your collection of a real number.
- 12:22[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 12:22[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and that'll, that's a big start.
- 12:25[SPEAKER_01]: And I know that that cards pretty pretty valuable.
- 12:27[SPEAKER_01]: So I got a lot of work to go from there.
- 12:30[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I was going to say, are you aware of like,
- 12:33[SPEAKER_02]: prices of the price of your autograph cards and like the the incline that it's had in the last several months.
- 12:42[SPEAKER_01]: I haven't.
- 12:42[SPEAKER_01]: I haven't looked.
- 12:43[SPEAKER_01]: I'm looking before the season this is a, you know, what cars were at, but haven't checked recently.
- 12:48[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 12:48[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, your oranges are selling for like, sixteen thousand dollars.
- 12:53[SPEAKER_02]: And instead, which is more than like, you know, MLB proven stars, which is, that's, that's the hobby for you, you know,
- 13:02[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 13:02[SPEAKER_01]: That's crazy.
- 13:03[SPEAKER_01]: That's right.
- 13:04[SPEAKER_01]: It sounds like I need to come to you though if I want to start my collection and things like you already know.
- 13:09[SPEAKER_02]: That's right.
- 13:09[SPEAKER_02]: That's the right baby.
- 13:10[SPEAKER_07]: You got to come through me.
- 13:13[SPEAKER_07]: Yeah.
- 13:13[SPEAKER_07]: I know a guy.
- 13:14[SPEAKER_07]: I know a guy.
- 13:15[SPEAKER_07]: I know a guy.
- 13:16[SPEAKER_02]: So I was holding all these hostage just so you could come on the podcast because I knew you'd want one.
- 13:22[SPEAKER_02]: So it's like that was my that was my goal here.
- 13:25[SPEAKER_07]: And it's funny too, Connor, I will tell you this is like we actually own one card of yours.
- 13:30[SPEAKER_07]: It is a blue number to one fifty PSA ten, but that's the only one we own because we sold all the other ones to these two guys.
- 13:40[SPEAKER_04]: I got a ton of questions for you, but I'm going to dive in with one related I've got three boys.
- 13:47[SPEAKER_04]: At home here my youngest is eight my oldest just turned twelve both are big baseball players, but they're also playing football right now and like playing basketball on the fall and by doing the research I did on you and kind of other articles that I've seen done.
- 14:01[SPEAKER_04]: Looks like you weren't just to stand up on the baseball field you were a stand out on the grid iron as well in football.
- 14:06[SPEAKER_04]: heck of a basketball player from what I saw as well, when did you decide like when did you stop playing those other sports and when did you decide like, look, I'm a baseball player and what what helps you make that decision that, you know, baseball is going to be it for me.
- 14:19[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, um, top, I played football basketball baseball all the way through high school.
- 14:24[SPEAKER_01]: I gave up football after freshman year, which I loved it, but I think the end.
- 14:29[SPEAKER_01]: you know, a chance for injury and football was he just too high.
- 14:32[SPEAKER_01]: I knew that I knew around probably thirteen fourteen years old on baseball was going to be my career.
- 14:37[SPEAKER_01]: I started to get some offers and so I kind of saw baseball, you know, being the way that I was going to go.
- 14:42[SPEAKER_01]: But I put, I mean, I played basketball all the way through junior year was my last year planes.
- 14:48[SPEAKER_01]: I just was a baseball player my senior year.
- 14:51[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I give a ton of credit to those other sports for, you know, helping me become the athlete that I am.
- 14:57[SPEAKER_01]: I'll say about thirteen, fourteen is when I kind of knew baseball was going to be where I wanted to go.
- 15:02[SPEAKER_01]: But I mean, I loved football and basketball, which I could still be playing on right now.
- 15:06[SPEAKER_04]: With that being said, like, was it with kids that are playing it now?
- 15:10[SPEAKER_04]: Would that be kind of your advice to about that age, about this day in time, where baseball is so demanding?
- 15:15[SPEAKER_04]: Like, my kids right now in football season,
- 15:17[SPEAKER_04]: Even that, you know, ten and twelve years old tonight, for example, we've got baseball practice starting again.
- 15:23[SPEAKER_04]: Okay.
- 15:23[SPEAKER_04]: And it's already the middle of football season.
- 15:26[SPEAKER_04]: Then we got fall baseball tournaments the next weekend.
- 15:28[SPEAKER_04]: And you already see kids starting at like eleven and twelve years old, how to be like.
- 15:32[SPEAKER_04]: Man, how can I play all these sports?
- 15:34[SPEAKER_04]: Like in your mind, is it, is it just to get through a point that is fourteen about the time you're going to go into high school about the time that you think somebody should select or do you say, hey, play as much as you can as much as you can.
- 15:45[SPEAKER_04]: And until you know the wrong moment right, kind of what you're advice there.
- 15:47[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 15:48[SPEAKER_01]: Um, so I never played any fall baseball.
- 15:51[SPEAKER_01]: I would always put the ball down for
- 15:54[SPEAKER_01]: a few months just to take a break and I was playing football getting into basketball.
- 15:58[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I would say try to play the sports you love as long as you can.
- 16:02[SPEAKER_01]: I did it as long as I could until senior year where I knew there was a chance to get drafted.
- 16:07[SPEAKER_01]: So I knew the spring was going to be huge.
- 16:09[SPEAKER_01]: And I just wanted to, you know, use that fall to be in the weight room.
- 16:11[SPEAKER_01]: Make sure I'm filling my absolute best.
- 16:14[SPEAKER_01]: For the base season my life, but if I was just going to go to college and play and I knew that's what I was going to do.
- 16:19[SPEAKER_01]: I probably would have played all the other sports all the way through senior years.
- 16:23[SPEAKER_01]: I think just there will be a moment when when you know you need to choose, but until that moment is, I say, let it rip and just keep trying to help your school win as main games as you can.
- 16:32[SPEAKER_04]: Do you feel like when you since you did that and you kind of didn't play baseball on the fall winner that you got that love of the game back every time you stepped on the field getting the spring like man, I'm ready to play again.
- 16:42[SPEAKER_04]: How did that go?
- 16:43[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, there was there was always like an it to like around January.
- 16:48[SPEAKER_01]: like after Christmas like you're right.
- 16:49[SPEAKER_01]: All right, this is getting time to start playing ball again and you know that I love that feeling because you know, a young age a lot of kids are playing year round and you know, if you want to play pro ball, I mean, it's going to be year round eventually.
- 17:01[SPEAKER_01]: But while you're young, man, just I love taking a break and and then you know, finding that love again around Christmas time.
- 17:08[SPEAKER_04]: So one more question on that front as far as when you were a kid.
- 17:11[SPEAKER_04]: So I've asked this question to a lot of different guys we found on the show, professional athletes like yourself.
- 17:16[SPEAKER_04]: Like, when did you know you were going to be a major leader?
- 17:18[SPEAKER_04]: But I looked at your story and looking at your story is different than most.
- 17:22[SPEAKER_04]: Okay.
- 17:23[SPEAKER_04]: So it was kind of like from a very young age from what I've read, you were the dude, like I mean, you've been the dude kind of like since the beginning.
- 17:31[SPEAKER_04]: I saw actually a picture correct me if I'm wrong that at twelve years old you're already six foot tall and there was like a kid standing beside you that's like four foot five.
- 17:39[SPEAKER_04]: Is that right?
- 17:40[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, I was the I was always the bigger kid and I was I was a little bit older than most kids my age.
- 17:47[SPEAKER_01]: So I was kind of hitting the game.
- 17:49[SPEAKER_01]: That's why I ended up reclassing after freshman year of high school to become one of the younger kids, try to push myself a little more.
- 17:58[SPEAKER_01]: But I've always just loved the game, loved playing hard, got the chance to go play some fun tournaments.
- 18:03[SPEAKER_01]: And that's where I feel like I developed and I just continued to want to get better and better.
- 18:08[SPEAKER_01]: And it's been a good fun career so far.
- 18:11[SPEAKER_04]: And you got your first college offer in the seventh grade or eighth grade from an SSL.
- 18:16[SPEAKER_01]: It was going in at going into eighth grade year like the summer before is when I got my first one.
- 18:20[SPEAKER_01]: Wow, that's awesome.
- 18:21[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 18:22[SPEAKER_04]: Well, hand my name.
- 18:22[SPEAKER_04]: You got some questions as well.
- 18:24[SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, yeah, for sure.
- 18:25[SPEAKER_07]: So so Connor, you you've.
- 18:27[SPEAKER_07]: like taken the levels by storm, right?
- 18:30[SPEAKER_07]: So you get drafted in twenty four, you know, you go from the single way to hide a AA, right?
- 18:36[SPEAKER_07]: Like what would your, what are your thoughts on the differences in the levels?
- 18:40[SPEAKER_07]: If you notice a difference, because you've been fairly dominant at every level, what's kind of your take on, you know, going through those three levels here in the last year?
- 18:48[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so I started in low way.
- 18:50[SPEAKER_01]: There's a lot of younger players just kind of figure out, you know, figure out themselves pitchers were pitchers were good.
- 18:56[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, there was a good video.
- 18:57[SPEAKER_01]: More like two pitch pitchers are just like, you know, maybe it'd be a heater and a flatter heater change up.
- 19:04[SPEAKER_01]: There was a lot of two pitch guys.
- 19:07[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I learned a lot about myself.
- 19:08[SPEAKER_01]: I learned how to have good timing.
- 19:10[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, there were some mechanical things I was working on in LAWA and then thanks took off.
- 19:13[SPEAKER_01]: We got moved up to high, started to see some older guys, guys with experience.
- 19:18[SPEAKER_01]: So, I'm guys sort of mixing in three, three-ish pitches.
- 19:20[SPEAKER_01]: And so, that was kind of, that was kind of a big deal for me with, you know, just hammering down approaches at the plate.
- 19:27[SPEAKER_01]: Just figuring out how to, you know, eliminate pitches and just focus on the zones that I want to, you know,
- 19:33[SPEAKER_01]: commit to when I'm swinging and so there was a lot more approach stuff that I was having to work on in high ages because the pitchers were getting better and then now in double a I mean there's there's a lot older guys I mean there's there's some guys out there twenty seven twenty eight that I'll face on the mound guys have five pitches and
- 19:52[SPEAKER_01]: They can change their fees with different places.
- 19:54[SPEAKER_01]: It's a different game.
- 19:55[SPEAKER_01]: I've heard that if you can hit here in double-ed, you should be fine.
- 19:59[SPEAKER_01]: And in the big leagues, I'm learning something new every day.
- 20:03[SPEAKER_01]: I just try to keep the same mindset that the game isn't changing.
- 20:07[SPEAKER_01]: still playing on the same field, same ball, so it's just, you know, trying to simplify things in my mind and continue work hard and grow as a player every day.
- 20:15[SPEAKER_07]: So, you know, one of the things I think about like your approach to the game, we've got a good friend of ours who's a scout and, you know, Walker Jenkins who is a fellow, you know,
- 20:24[SPEAKER_07]: minor legal with you another top rated prospect.
- 20:27[SPEAKER_07]: He's from our area.
- 20:28[SPEAKER_07]: We had a chance to talk with him and you'll talk the same language about like approach and all this kind of stuff.
- 20:33[SPEAKER_07]: And you've got to adapt to these different pictures because they're watching you hit and they're adapting to you, right?
- 20:39[SPEAKER_07]: So I mean, this is really competitive to kind of think.
- 20:41[SPEAKER_07]: But that said, who's the dirtiest guy you faced?
- 20:44[SPEAKER_07]: Like, you know, you're coming to coming out of high school jumping into Lowe.
- 20:49[SPEAKER_07]: Like, I would imagine it's a big jump.
- 20:50[SPEAKER_07]: What's the dirtiest stuff you've seen?
- 20:52[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 20:54[SPEAKER_01]: About two months in the low a we went down in face of blue jays low a team and trade savage was starting that game and he's he's real.
- 21:02[SPEAKER_01]: He's the real deal.
- 21:04[SPEAKER_01]: So I'll say he would be the nasty guy face.
- 21:07[SPEAKER_07]: That's awesome dude.
- 21:08[SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, and I look at to this would be my final question this little round here.
- 21:11[SPEAKER_07]: I look at the draft that you were a part of in twenty twenty four.
- 21:14[SPEAKER_07]: You had Basana go one, you got Chase Burns go two, you've got Condon go three, you've got Kurt's go four, Hagen Smith five, Cag six, Weatherhold seven, Christian more eight, and then you.
- 21:27[SPEAKER_07]: This is a stud group of dudes.
- 21:31[SPEAKER_07]: a lot of these guys are already in the bigs like look at what curts is doing you know with the athletics right now and yet here you are the number one prospect in major league baseball right now like is that something you think about is that something you look to achieve or accomplished like does it even go through your brain like do you process that at all I mean
- 21:52[SPEAKER_01]: to start the year, like thinking that I would become the number one prospect wouldn't even have thought.
- 21:57[SPEAKER_01]: I got had no idea.
- 21:59[SPEAKER_01]: This would take off to become what it is.
- 22:01[SPEAKER_01]: It's cool to hear about now, but there's a lot of good players out there.
- 22:06[SPEAKER_01]: There's a lot of good dudes.
- 22:08[SPEAKER_01]: So I just try to be myself every day.
- 22:11[SPEAKER_01]: Don't try to get caught up in it because then if I do it, it'll change the way I'm playing the game.
- 22:15[SPEAKER_01]: I just don't want to change the thing.
- 22:16[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm continuing to do the same thing.
- 22:18[SPEAKER_01]: I do work hard and play with a lot of energy, have a lot of fun and try to get to the big leagues that's cool because I can.
- 22:25[SPEAKER_01]: There's guys before me have already made it.
- 22:28[SPEAKER_01]: I'm kind of next to the line.
- 22:29[SPEAKER_01]: So I've got a long journey to ahead of me, but I'm ready for it.
- 22:33[SPEAKER_04]: Do you feel like you've got more of a target on your back now?
- 22:36[SPEAKER_04]: Is the number one when you step into games and boxes?
- 22:38[SPEAKER_04]: Do you feel like
- 22:40[SPEAKER_01]: these pictures against you are trading you need differently now that you have become that this the second half of the season you feel like you're getting pitched in a differently maybe a little it there is a little extra pressure unnecessary pressure that you know I can put on myself I just try not to think about it try to try to do my thing pitchers pitchers are attacking me they they want to give me out so I know it's going to be competitive A.V.
- 23:02[SPEAKER_01]: every time I step in the box can't take a can't take a A.V.
- 23:05[SPEAKER_01]: off
- 23:07[SPEAKER_02]: Connor, who did you, did you have a baseball team growing up that you rooted for or favor player that you always, like modeled your game after?
- 23:15[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I always grew up in Atlanta, Brady's fan.
- 23:18[SPEAKER_01]: My dad, he's from, he's from make for Georgia.
- 23:21[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah, crap.
- 23:24[SPEAKER_04]: We love to have you come back and be a bread.
- 23:26[SPEAKER_04]: We need a short stop, man.
- 23:28[SPEAKER_04]: We need you.
- 23:28[SPEAKER_04]: Come on.
- 23:30[SPEAKER_04]: I'm calling.
- 23:30[SPEAKER_04]: I'm calling a right now.
- 23:32[SPEAKER_02]: Right now.
- 23:33[SPEAKER_02]: Right now.
- 23:34[SPEAKER_02]: No, because you know, it kind of can't go there.
- 23:35[SPEAKER_02]: You know, what happened?
- 23:36[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it would trade them and then they'd sign them to like a twenty four year deal for twelve million bucks.
- 23:43[SPEAKER_03]: Come on.
- 23:45[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, that's what debris is.
- 23:47[SPEAKER_02]: So did you group a brace friend, but did you have a favor player?
- 23:50[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 23:52[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I read the guy around with a coin.
- 23:53[SPEAKER_01]: It wasn't always the guy that I love watching to the energy.
- 23:57[SPEAKER_01]: You know, he brings.
- 23:58[SPEAKER_01]: He just looks like he's always having fun and it's a lot of similarities.
- 24:01[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, he can hit for power.
- 24:02[SPEAKER_01]: He can
- 24:03[SPEAKER_01]: You know, rack up doubles and still bases like foul gas.
- 24:07[SPEAKER_01]: I try to be the same type of player.
- 24:09[SPEAKER_07]: So here's a crazy thought just along those lines like, you know, so Connor, you know, was born in two thousand and six and a king of debuted in two thousand eighteen.
- 24:19[SPEAKER_07]: So we have to remember that like Connor was twelve.
- 24:22[SPEAKER_07]: or thirteen years old when a couldn't get his day viewing and now he's similar like that baffle like I can't even process that like that's crazy to think about right now but that's awesome that's why absolutely awesome story though man to see that you've come that far you know in such a short period of time
- 24:38[SPEAKER_04]: Who are some prospects with that being said, you know, again, I was at the future's game, saw you there, and that field is just full of talent, right, including yourself, like who stood out to you?
- 24:48[SPEAKER_04]: As you see these other guys play, who are a couple prospects that you've played with or against here the last year or year and a half?
- 24:55[SPEAKER_04]: You've been like, man, you mentioned your savage there, but in any other field, you know, guys in position players, like yourself that you've been like, man, that dude, a duke and ball.
- 25:03[SPEAKER_04]: Who else would you mention?
- 25:05[SPEAKER_01]: You know, JJ Weatherhold stood out.
- 25:08[SPEAKER_01]: I haven't been keeping up with him this season.
- 25:10[SPEAKER_01]: He seems like he's big league ready.
- 25:11[SPEAKER_01]: I wouldn't be shocked to see him get caught up soon.
- 25:14[SPEAKER_01]: And then George Lombard Jr.
- 25:16[SPEAKER_01]: He seems like he's gone.
- 25:18[SPEAKER_01]: He's going to be the real deal.
- 25:18[SPEAKER_01]: So I would say those two guys were, you know, the two that stood out the most.
- 25:23[SPEAKER_01]: They just looked like ball players.
- 25:25[SPEAKER_02]: Glad you just didn't say you modeled your game after Anthony Volpi.
- 25:28[SPEAKER_02]: Get in this gracious.
- 25:30[SPEAKER_02]: I was just gonna ask, I mean, you know, I think most consider you a true five to a player, but you're obviously, obviously you consider yourself, you're probably your toughest critic.
- 25:40[SPEAKER_02]: What would you say your biggest, I'll call it challenger weaknesses in your game right now that you'd like to improve?
- 25:46[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 25:48[SPEAKER_01]: I'm a super aggressive hitter.
- 25:50[SPEAKER_01]: So I like to swing the bat and
- 25:52[SPEAKER_01]: You know, it seems like recently a lot of guys are just, you know, they're not throwing stuff in the zone.
- 25:57[SPEAKER_01]: But at times, I can go chase flatters and stuff like that stuff down.
- 26:03[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm just, you know, I'm working every day to, you know, really zone in on my approach and get pitches, you know, see them up and get them in the zone that I won't.
- 26:12[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm always working on something man.
- 26:13[SPEAKER_01]: It's something new every day.
- 26:15[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like there's always mechanical stuff I can work on.
- 26:18[SPEAKER_01]: But, you know, this is always something new.
- 26:21[SPEAKER_01]: is your approach at the plate is it always the same is it always are you sitting fast ball and adjusting or what is your approach at the plate you know a lot of times is pretty much every time I go on the boxes you know be on time for the year and then you know have a have a swing that you can buy time and kids kids all speed up front I pretty much have that against every guy unless it's just some
- 26:45[SPEAKER_01]: some different type of picture that we got to change it.
- 26:48[SPEAKER_01]: But it's cool to see.
- 26:49[SPEAKER_01]: We have a ton of information on these pictures now.
- 26:53[SPEAKER_01]: And some guys will be seventy percent slaughter back in my hand.
- 26:56[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe we still don't slaughter here.
- 26:59[SPEAKER_01]: So it just depends on who's in the game.
- 27:01[SPEAKER_01]: A lot of times it's just, you know, be on top of the heater and just just reacts.
- 27:06[SPEAKER_01]: That's how always event is just see it and see it
- 27:10[SPEAKER_04]: I was going to say just to follow up to what he just asked, when you feel like you could start seeing spin for the first time as a hitter.
- 27:16[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, you hear about spin and guys can see, hey, this is a curve ball.
- 27:20[SPEAKER_04]: This is a slider.
- 27:20[SPEAKER_04]: Again, having kids up kind of through the ranks now, like they're just starting to see a lot of that.
- 27:26[SPEAKER_04]: You know, if you're playing high level travel ball at eleven, twelve years old in Georgia, you're seeing sliders.
- 27:31[SPEAKER_04]: You're seeing curve balls at a regular basis, eleven, twelve years old.
- 27:34[SPEAKER_04]: When you felt like you were like, man, I can see that and I know it's coming and when could you really differentiate?
- 27:39[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I would think when I was about twelve, I had a few years before that where I started to, you know, see it for the first time.
- 27:47[SPEAKER_01]: And then once I started playing at a higher level, I mean, it was a everyday deal, guys with their own heaters and curve balls and slotters.
- 27:55[SPEAKER_01]: It's just had a doubt to it.
- 27:56[SPEAKER_01]: And you know, I feel like I did about twelve to over thirteen years old.
- 27:59[SPEAKER_02]: No, Carl, I know you had another question there.
- 28:01[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I forgot what that was, but what my question was.
- 28:06[SPEAKER_02]: Watching the big leagues now.
- 28:07[SPEAKER_02]: Do you first up do you watch any big league games now?
- 28:10[SPEAKER_02]: Like are you still are you watching on a regular basis?
- 28:12[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, when that not on a regular basis, but keep up with the pirates to try to keep up with the pirates to get bit and then I'll see it kind of stuff on the red so I like the fight the red sox are all over my feed.
- 28:24[SPEAKER_01]: So there's a part of the two teams that I'm keeping up with.
- 28:27[SPEAKER_02]: Do you do a relationship or have you spoken with with Skies at all?
- 28:32[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, we uh, you know, he kind of introduced himself.
- 28:36[SPEAKER_01]: You know, when I was at when I was on my visit at LSU, so what we kind of go back to when I was committed to LSU right when he was finishing up and then once I got drafted, he reached out and then spring training got to talk.
- 28:49[SPEAKER_01]: I was at Big League camp, so I got to see him every day and then he he'll check in.
- 28:54[SPEAKER_01]: every now and then, like, as it sees and goes on.
- 28:57[SPEAKER_01]: And so I've got a little bit of a connection there, just think it'll, you know, continue to grow over the years and hopefully get to play together one day.
- 29:05[SPEAKER_07]: So, so I'm sitting here looking at this Connor and just, again, by the way, you present yourself as being very humble, which, you know, really appreciate.
- 29:14[SPEAKER_07]: It's just the fact that you would come on the podcast says so much about your character.
- 29:18[SPEAKER_07]: And who you are and so I just you know just a testimony to that man just like you're you're just a pleasure to be around a chat with but I'm sitting here looking at the stats from twenty twenty five boys and my man is batten three thirty
- 29:31[SPEAKER_07]: with nineteen homeruns, eighty-weight RBIs, and sixty-four stolen bases.
- 29:37[SPEAKER_07]: That's the thing that jumped off to me.
- 29:39[SPEAKER_07]: So you can run a little bit.
- 29:41[SPEAKER_07]: And so you think about these kind of like historical five-tool players, you know, I know growing up as a kid, my dad, ad nauseam, talked about Nikki Mannell.
- 29:53[SPEAKER_07]: because of the kind of athlete he was.
- 29:55[SPEAKER_07]: You know what I mean?
- 29:56[SPEAKER_07]: It's like a five-tool guy.
- 29:58[SPEAKER_07]: The guy could run, the guy could hit for average, power, all the different stuff or whatever.
- 30:01[SPEAKER_07]: Was the running part because like, I played ball, but like, let's be honest, I couldn't run for anything, which is why I never went, you know, to a higher level.
- 30:10[SPEAKER_07]: Because I just, was the speed always a part of your game?
- 30:13[SPEAKER_07]: And like, is that something that you get fired up about, you know, taking bags and stuff?
- 30:17[SPEAKER_07]: Is that like an in your mind?
- 30:19[SPEAKER_07]: Is that something you love?
- 30:20[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, um, I've always been a faster guy at a young age like, twelve, thirteen.
- 30:25[SPEAKER_01]: I'll still grow it into my body.
- 30:26[SPEAKER_01]: So it kind of looks like a giraffe a lot when I was running.
- 30:30[SPEAKER_01]: But I would say senior year high school, you know, I knew I had a big year.
- 30:34[SPEAKER_01]: I knew I needed to, you know, prove a lot of things.
- 30:36[SPEAKER_01]: And so, you know, I just I was super aggressive on the base pass.
- 30:40[SPEAKER_01]: I think I ended my senior year with like eighty five stolen bags and I was like,
- 30:44[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to continue to do this.
- 30:45[SPEAKER_01]: Let's try to do it in pro ball this year.
- 30:47[SPEAKER_01]: So I've been every time I get on, you know, there's I'm trying to be aggressive trying to get to the next bags.
- 30:52[SPEAKER_01]: It's just kind of kind of worked out and you know, my speed is it continues to get better every year just in the office and being able to train and just continue to grow.
- 31:02[SPEAKER_01]: It's part of my development part of growing as a player.
- 31:04[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like I can continue to
- 31:06[SPEAKER_01]: You know, focus on getting better jobs and breeding pitchers.
- 31:10[SPEAKER_01]: There's always something that I'm thinking about when I'm on base, but always wanting to run, want to be aggressive.
- 31:16[SPEAKER_04]: One of baseball players don't usually calculate their speed by the forty, but have you ran the forty in the last year or so and now you're forty time?
- 31:23[SPEAKER_01]: No, I haven't ever run a forty.
- 31:25[SPEAKER_01]: We always did the sixty R dashes at like the show cases and stuff.
- 31:29[SPEAKER_01]: That's really all I know.
- 31:31[SPEAKER_04]: Do you think you're a four or five guy, four or four guy?
- 31:33[SPEAKER_04]: If you were to run it, what would you shoot for?
- 31:35[SPEAKER_01]: I bet I would be around a four or four, four or five.
- 31:39[SPEAKER_01]: I kind of gain speed as I get going.
- 31:41[SPEAKER_01]: So now the six yard dash was good for me because I could get going by the end, but that's some I'm working on being more explosive out the gate.
- 31:49[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's right.
- 31:50[SPEAKER_04]: Well, I want to hit on the, I want to hit on these two things that I had read on as well.
- 31:55[SPEAKER_04]: I'd read about an accident that had happened to you when you were younger.
- 31:59[SPEAKER_04]: an ATV ride in Georgia with your brother and heard about that accident and I actually saw the score that was pretty pretty gnarly came from your nose all the way across your eye and in that story it said that you were within one millimeter of losing your eyeball and I think it was your left eye correct.
- 32:16[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 32:17[SPEAKER_04]: And so obviously that was a challenging time as a young man coming up having that injury, but outside of that, like, what did that do for you, like in your in your face, in your career, like your drive, now where you're at, like how do you feel like that forms you are today?
- 32:32[SPEAKER_04]: And then second question, second part question of that is like, what was the most challenging part of your baseball career as of this moment to now?
- 32:39[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 32:40[SPEAKER_01]: Um, yes, so that that accident happened.
- 32:43[SPEAKER_01]: It was a long time ago.
- 32:44[SPEAKER_01]: It was about eight years old, but, um, you know, I was close to losing lose my I'm probably never getting to play this for it.
- 32:52[SPEAKER_01]: So, um, I mean, I'm super blessed.
- 32:54[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like I'm bigger my faith.
- 32:56[SPEAKER_01]: So I just knew, new guy had a big plan for me and he was always watching over.
- 33:01[SPEAKER_01]: So that was definitely a scary moment, but, you know,
- 33:04[SPEAKER_01]: help me not take anything for granted, you know, I'm just thankful to be out there every single day playing this game.
- 33:09[SPEAKER_01]: So I really hope helped me learn that and not take it for granted.
- 33:14[SPEAKER_01]: So it's been a been a fun process, you know, over the years just I haven't until the most part been super healthy and had a clean, clean career so far.
- 33:23[SPEAKER_01]: So I've been blessed to have that hard as far to my career so far.
- 33:26[SPEAKER_01]: I was just that senior year was
- 33:29[SPEAKER_01]: It was tough.
- 33:30[SPEAKER_01]: I had a great year, but it was tough mentally.
- 33:33[SPEAKER_01]: There was so many eyes on me at the time.
- 33:35[SPEAKER_01]: Every game there was twelve to twenty scouts there watching every move.
- 33:40[SPEAKER_01]: So just being in the spotlight can be kind of tough sometimes.
- 33:43[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I'm just trying to be a normal human being and just be like my other teammates and stuff.
- 33:48[SPEAKER_01]: And there's always it was always about me and I didn't really like that.
- 33:53[SPEAKER_01]: It's trying to be normal.
- 33:55[SPEAKER_01]: It's probably been the hardest part of my career because I'm just normal guy.
- 33:59[SPEAKER_01]: I don't really love all that attention and stuff that comes with it, but it's part of it and just continue to be who I am.
- 34:06[SPEAKER_01]: Good stuff, Kern.
- 34:07[SPEAKER_02]: Who are some of your closest teammates, friends that are in the minor leagues that you currently?
- 34:13[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, I guess you're new to Altona, but who have been your closest friends throughout the year minor league career?
- 34:20[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so a lot of the guys I got drafted with have been all from Will Taylor.
- 34:26[SPEAKER_01]: He played at Clemson, played football and baseball.
- 34:28[SPEAKER_01]: He got drafted with us.
- 34:30[SPEAKER_01]: Wyatt Sanford was a high school guy that got drafted with me last year.
- 34:33[SPEAKER_01]: He's been all from Derek Berg.
- 34:35[SPEAKER_01]: He's a catcher.
- 34:36[SPEAKER_01]: He's here and I'll tune it with me.
- 34:37[SPEAKER_01]: I played it army.
- 34:38[SPEAKER_01]: He's been a great dude kind of he's kind of taking kind of taking the under his wing I've lived with him in two different spots So you know, he's taught me how to cook and stuff like that So he's kind of been that dad figure for me, which is which is been pretty cool So super thankful for him and then a guy that's not in our organization Slade caught a well I played with him over the years growing up with him and it's been cool to see him get drafted and have a have a season like he is so
- 35:02[SPEAKER_01]: Does it definitely the guys that I'm closest with?
- 35:06[SPEAKER_02]: So switching gears for a minute, do you have your own hitting coach privately that works with you or do you kind of rely on the pirates coaching staff to work with you throughout the all season or through the season?
- 35:18[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, I know a lot of players depending on the organization to have outside help to help do your own hitting coach personally.
- 35:26[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, it's really been me and my dad for my whole life.
- 35:31[SPEAKER_01]: He's been in my hating coat.
- 35:32[SPEAKER_01]: He's there in the all season.
- 35:33[SPEAKER_01]: I do have a guy who thinks Josh and the money.
- 35:36[SPEAKER_01]: He's there every day.
- 35:38[SPEAKER_01]: He takes me all the time.
- 35:39[SPEAKER_01]: We're talking hitting him.
- 35:40[SPEAKER_01]: And when my dad's not able to be there, he's there.
- 35:42[SPEAKER_01]: So MVP, we're talking.
- 35:43[SPEAKER_01]: So I would say Josh and my dad are my two main guys.
- 35:47[SPEAKER_01]: And then the pirates, they've done a tremendous job working with me throughout the season.
- 35:52[SPEAKER_01]: You know, we're on the same path and they know what I want.
- 35:55[SPEAKER_01]: So they've just kind of let me grow and let me figure things out on my own, but also been there if I, you know, have any questions, the pirates have been really good, but when I go home and all season, definitely working with my dad and Josh.
- 36:06[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I was going to ask if that was like supported by the organization or it's like frowned upon or.
- 36:11[SPEAKER_02]: Or what happens seems like they're supportive of it.
- 36:14[SPEAKER_01]: No, yeah, they're definitely supportive because I mean, we'll even have an office in camp and I'll go back to Florida at our spring training complex and do like a three week camp.
- 36:24[SPEAKER_01]: So they know what I'm working on.
- 36:25[SPEAKER_01]: We'll talk and then once once I go home, they just trust that, you know, I'm putting in a work, putting in.
- 36:31[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, what I'm trying to do, uh, and there's a full support of it.
- 36:34[SPEAKER_01]: Go ahead.
- 36:34[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 36:34[SPEAKER_02]: All right.
- 36:35[SPEAKER_02]: All right.
- 36:35[SPEAKER_02]: Connor.
- 36:36[SPEAKER_02]: We're going to we're going to we're going to ran him here.
- 36:37[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
- 36:38[SPEAKER_02]: All right.
- 36:38[SPEAKER_02]: Favorite food crawfish.
- 36:41[SPEAKER_02]: Wow.
- 36:41[SPEAKER_02]: Didn't see that one coming.
- 36:42[SPEAKER_02]: Say back in Connor.
- 36:43[SPEAKER_07]: That's it.
- 36:44[SPEAKER_07]: We didn't know what you're talking about right now.
- 36:46[SPEAKER_07]: Nope.
- 36:47[SPEAKER_07]: He has absolutely no clue.
- 36:48[SPEAKER_07]: Look at this case.
- 36:50[SPEAKER_02]: I had I had I had crayfish in fourth grade.
- 36:52[SPEAKER_02]: Is that the same thing?
- 36:53[SPEAKER_02]: No, I don't think that's the same thing.
- 36:56[SPEAKER_01]: What does lobster favorite movie a top guy favorite TV show?
- 37:02[SPEAKER_01]: outer bank.
- 37:02[SPEAKER_01]: What is it?
- 37:02[SPEAKER_01]: Outer bank.
- 37:02[SPEAKER_01]: Favorite musician.
- 37:03[SPEAKER_01]: I Riley Green.
- 37:03[SPEAKER_01]: No, no, no idea.
- 37:04[SPEAKER_01]: I think Conor's a lot more.
- 37:04[SPEAKER_01]: I think Conor's a lot more.
- 37:05[SPEAKER_01]: I think Conor's a lot more.
- 37:06[SPEAKER_02]: I think Conor's a lot more.
- 37:06[SPEAKER_02]: I think Conor's a lot more.
- 37:07[SPEAKER_02]: I think Conor's a lot more.
- 37:07[SPEAKER_02]: I think Conor's a lot more.
- 37:08[SPEAKER_02]: I think Conor's a lot more.
- 37:09[SPEAKER_02]: I think Conor's a lot more.
- 37:09[SPEAKER_02]: I think Conor's a lot more.
- 37:10[SPEAKER_03]: I think Conor's a lot more.
- 37:10[SPEAKER_03]: I think Conor's a lot more.
- 37:11[SPEAKER_03]: I think Conor's a lot more.
- 37:12[SPEAKER_03]: I think Conor's a lot more.
- 37:12[SPEAKER_03]: I think Conor's a lot more.
- 37:13[SPEAKER_02]: I think Conor's a lot more.
- 37:13[SPEAKER_03]: I think Conor's a lot more.
- 37:14[SPEAKER_03]: I think Conor's a lot more.
- 37:15[SPEAKER_02]: I think Conor's a lot more.
- 37:15[SPEAKER_02]: I think Conor's a lot more.
- 37:16[SPEAKER_02]: I think Conor's a lot more.
- 37:17[SPEAKER_02]: I think Conor's a lot more.
- 37:17[SPEAKER_02]: I
- 37:17[SPEAKER_02]: I have.
- 37:18[SPEAKER_02]: Last Christmas.
- 37:19[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, did you like it or not?
- 37:20[SPEAKER_02]: Has a, not bigger city.
- 37:22[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it was.
- 37:22[SPEAKER_02]: He did.
- 37:23[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it was nice.
- 37:24[SPEAKER_02]: So you'd want to play in New York City maybe one day if you ever become a free agent and I'm going to start recruiting you already.
- 37:30[SPEAKER_02]: Start recruiting you to clean your good bubble.
- 37:32[SPEAKER_02]: What do you, what do you, what do you have?
- 37:33[SPEAKER_02]: You had something while I think of more randoms.
- 37:35[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, yes, it's why he's on that while on that topic here.
- 37:39[SPEAKER_04]: He's open that up.
- 37:40[SPEAKER_04]: So you're a Mississippi guy, right?
- 37:41[SPEAKER_04]: You're born in Mississippi, right?
- 37:42[SPEAKER_04]: The Mississippi.
- 37:43[SPEAKER_04]: Do you see yourself in the all seasons, always having Mississippi be home?
- 37:48[SPEAKER_04]: Kind of a place there in Mississippi.
- 37:49[SPEAKER_04]: He's going to, no matter where you play in a matter where your career takes you, you see that always kind of being where you come back.
- 37:56[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think so.
- 37:57[SPEAKER_01]: Um, just a lot of my miss to be roots and, you know, love the area that my family lives in.
- 38:02[SPEAKER_07]: So just I feel like I, especially early in my career, I'll definitely come back home and settle down there for the whole season because I mean, I got everything I need along those lines, you know, Conor's, it's really, it's interesting because there is a small niche in the world who, like, they, they know who you are.
- 38:18[SPEAKER_07]: They know everything about you is a baseball player.
- 38:22[SPEAKER_07]: because they believe in your game and your ability to become a future Major League Hall of Famer and so they're collecting your cards and all this kind of stuff and so they know who you are and again I would imagine you go back home right folks kind of know who you are you know and you come in from a town that's not you know massive Jackson and you know Mississippi area or whatnot you know when you go back home like is it weird for you like
- 38:45[SPEAKER_07]: Kind of you already mentioned this idea of adjusting to the spotlight and all that's kind of stuff.
- 38:50[SPEAKER_07]: You're not a spotlight guy in my mind of like how you're like how do you handle that with people wanting your autograph or pictures and all that kind of stuff like does that weigh on you at all because I mean I feel like there's sometimes where you just be like listen y'all like I just need a moment you know yeah
- 39:05[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, it's cool.
- 39:07[SPEAKER_01]: It's cool being, you know, people want my autograph and pictures.
- 39:10[SPEAKER_01]: I, you know, I will always take the time for anybody that, you know, wants to need that.
- 39:15[SPEAKER_01]: So, uh, it's definitely cool when I'm blessed to be in that spot.
- 39:17[SPEAKER_01]: But, I mean, there is times where, you know, I just want to want to be away from everyone, but, you know, when I, when I get home in the office, and I have plenty of opportunities to do that.
- 39:26[SPEAKER_01]: That's why I'm so into like hunting and fishing.
- 39:30[SPEAKER_01]: That's my time to get away.
- 39:31[SPEAKER_01]: If I'm
- 39:32[SPEAKER_01]: I'm public and someone recognized me.
- 39:33[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to take the time, you know, to, you know, introduce myself to them and, you know, get to know them a little bit.
- 39:40[SPEAKER_01]: So it's definitely cool to see that happen.
- 39:42[SPEAKER_01]: And especially when I'm back home, I want to take care of my Mississippi people.
- 39:45[SPEAKER_01]: That's awesome.
- 39:46[SPEAKER_04]: Connor, while we're on that note, I'm going to publicly invite you to Paradise Farms, which is my farm in Georgia.
- 39:53[SPEAKER_04]: There are a thousand, two thousand acres of a hunting refuge for you to come and use that bear bear bow.
- 40:00[SPEAKER_04]: We'll put you on that first bow kill.
- 40:02[SPEAKER_04]: All right, both season starts here in a couple of weeks and baseball ends.
- 40:05[SPEAKER_04]: You're welcome.
- 40:06[SPEAKER_04]: We got we got sixty acres of planted soybeans such you up wherever you want to go.
- 40:10[SPEAKER_04]: Walk you through the place you get out there.
- 40:12[SPEAKER_04]: First bow kill, Connor Griffon.
- 40:14[SPEAKER_04]: We're going to get him down a paradise farm.
- 40:15[SPEAKER_04]: It's all in.
- 40:19[SPEAKER_04]: I'm good one by current and he can come out and bring his drinks later after we're done.
- 40:24[SPEAKER_04]: Hey, hey, current, you know what shooting ski is and not the kind of shooting ski you're thinking about not ski ski ski, it's shooting ski.
- 40:31[SPEAKER_04]: You know shooting ski does you know shooting?
- 40:33[SPEAKER_04]: What is it?
- 40:34[SPEAKER_03]: Should I what is it?
- 40:38[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, yeah, you have a shotgun.
- 40:40[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 40:40[SPEAKER_04]: And there's a clay target and you shoot it across the sky.
- 40:44[SPEAKER_04]: And you shoot it like it's a bird.
- 40:46[SPEAKER_02]: And you I know that, but I never heard the term shooting ski.
- 40:49[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, that's kind of slaying, you know, shooting clays, clay pigeons.
- 40:53[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, something like that.
- 40:54[SPEAKER_02]: I'd love to shoot some pigeons here.
- 40:56[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I would say that.
- 40:57[SPEAKER_02]: Connor, what should you do?
- 40:58[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, we'll invite you to Georgia with it.
- 41:00[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I'll be right there.
- 41:01[SPEAKER_02]: What's kind of, what's your drink of choice when you're relaxing?
- 41:04[SPEAKER_02]: Is it a beer?
- 41:05[SPEAKER_02]: Nah, I'm a, I'm a, I'm like a Mountain Dew guy Mountain Dew.
- 41:08[SPEAKER_02]: All right.
- 41:09[SPEAKER_02]: I guess you're not even old enough to drink.
- 41:11[SPEAKER_02]: Jesus Christ.
- 41:12[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, God.
- 41:16[SPEAKER_02]: God.
- 41:17[SPEAKER_02]: God.
- 41:18[SPEAKER_02]: God.
- 41:19[SPEAKER_02]: God.
- 41:20[SPEAKER_02]: I wasn't trying to get you there either.
- 41:22[SPEAKER_02]: Oh my God.
- 41:23[SPEAKER_02]: You're not even legal to drink.
- 41:24[SPEAKER_02]: Oh my god.
- 41:25[SPEAKER_02]: Connor.
- 41:26[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, you.
- 41:26[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, okay.
- 41:27[SPEAKER_02]: Turn.
- 41:27[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 41:28[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 41:29[SPEAKER_07]: This is Connor.
- 41:30[SPEAKER_07]: These nineteen and legal taking action.
- 41:33[SPEAKER_02]: Connor.
- 41:34[SPEAKER_02]: Connor.
- 41:34[SPEAKER_02]: Have you.
- 41:34[SPEAKER_02]: Do you know, do you know what a bar mitzvah is?
- 41:38[SPEAKER_02]: No, no.
- 41:40[SPEAKER_05]: I love it.
- 41:41[SPEAKER_02]: It's okay.
- 41:43[SPEAKER_02]: Well, if you shouldn't know, you're, I mean, I'm part of it.
- 41:45[SPEAKER_01]: I've heard the time before.
- 41:48[SPEAKER_01]: I'm sure I know if you would.
- 41:50[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 41:50[SPEAKER_02]: All right.
- 41:52[SPEAKER_02]: It's not even worthy of explaining.
- 41:53[SPEAKER_02]: I'm just, uh, yeah.
- 41:55[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
- 41:55[SPEAKER_02]: I don't even think these guys know what it is.
- 41:57[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 41:59[SPEAKER_02]: It's, yeah, you know what it is.
- 42:01[SPEAKER_02]: When a Jewish board becomes a man.
- 42:03[SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, thirteen years old, then the celebration.
- 42:06[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 42:07[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 42:07[SPEAKER_02]: Exactly.
- 42:07[SPEAKER_07]: I thought it was a cookie.
- 42:08[SPEAKER_07]: Should be.
- 42:08[SPEAKER_02]: All right.
- 42:13[SPEAKER_04]: We're getting back on task.
- 42:14[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 42:15[SPEAKER_04]: I got two more questions for you.
- 42:17[SPEAKER_04]: And Connor that I'm done.
- 42:18[SPEAKER_04]: Let these boys wrap up.
- 42:19[SPEAKER_04]: Really appreciate you coming on.
- 42:21[SPEAKER_04]: But I know we have kids that do watch this show.
- 42:23[SPEAKER_04]: Okay.
- 42:24[SPEAKER_04]: And there's kids that are watching that they're going to tune in.
- 42:27[SPEAKER_04]: Probably just to see you.
- 42:28[SPEAKER_04]: Right.
- 42:28[SPEAKER_04]: There's so many kids now are into prospects.
- 42:31[SPEAKER_04]: kids at my kids age now that's the new thing with booming coming on when I was a kid I didn't know who brought they didn't have this kind of exposure to guys coming up through the minor system will now they do and my kids were huge fans of years a lot of kids are and they want to sit where you're sitting right now right nineteen years old number one prospect you know working your way to major leagues what is your biggest piece of advice to kids
- 42:54[SPEAKER_04]: about baseball and to get to where you're at not only just on the work side, but like anything on the mental side or anything you can think of yet one piece of advice you get kids that are coming up playing baseball that want to be what would that be.
- 43:05[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, just you know, it's going to take a lot of sacrifice to get where you're at especially through high school there's a lot of
- 43:11[SPEAKER_01]: You know, a lot of distractions, a lot of things that can get you off course, but, you know, you just got to put your mind to it.
- 43:15[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, my big advice is, you know, have faith in God.
- 43:20[SPEAKER_01]: I'm a big believer.
- 43:21[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, I knew that God has me on the right path and just continue to use the talents that you're blessed with and continue to work hard, try to overcome adversity every day.
- 43:31[SPEAKER_01]: There's always going to be something in this game that, you know, it's going to fight you, this game's tough.
- 43:37[SPEAKER_01]: He's got to continue to work hard, keep your head down, and don't focus on tomorrow too much.
- 43:41[SPEAKER_01]: Just kind of be in the present, being in the moment, and continue to have fun.
- 43:44[SPEAKER_04]: All right.
- 43:45[SPEAKER_04]: On that note, this was the second part of the question in my last question.
- 43:48[SPEAKER_04]: Now for the dads that are listening to like myself, you heard said your dad was a huge part of your story.
- 43:54[SPEAKER_04]: And he still works.
- 43:55[SPEAKER_04]: You did out on your swing.
- 43:57[SPEAKER_04]: As dads sometimes, we have a tendency to be really hard on our kids, right?
- 44:00[SPEAKER_04]: In baseball, it's a tough game as it is.
- 44:02[SPEAKER_04]: It's a game of failure.
- 44:03[SPEAKER_04]: where if you're batting over three hundred in your major league career, you're a whole famer.
- 44:07[SPEAKER_04]: And so my question to you is your dad's still working with you to game.
- 44:11[SPEAKER_04]: What's been the biggest thing that's helped you with your dad working with you to what has he been patient has he been firm has he been all the above like how is it?
- 44:18[SPEAKER_04]: How's it work for you to be nineteen in your dad's still working with you to all the dads that are listening?
- 44:23[SPEAKER_04]: What's your biggest piece of advice to the dads out there that are helping the kids?
- 44:26[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, um, just know, and you know, if you're a dad, you got a player that's going through the baseball career, just know the expectation that your son has.
- 44:35[SPEAKER_01]: So my dad always tells me, like, if I have a tough game, he knows the expectations I set for myself.
- 44:41[SPEAKER_01]: So he's going to hold me to those expectations.
- 44:43[SPEAKER_01]: He's going to hold me to those standards.
- 44:45[SPEAKER_01]: If I have a tough game, and I'm, you know, I'm struggling.
- 44:47[SPEAKER_01]: He's going to know why because, you know, I want to be on base three at three out of five times and he's going to be there for me.
- 44:53[SPEAKER_01]: He's going to love me, but he's also going to be, you know, my best teammate.
- 44:56[SPEAKER_01]: He's going to bring me up and he's always going to be there for me.
- 44:59[SPEAKER_01]: So wouldn't I wouldn't be here without him.
- 45:01[SPEAKER_01]: He definitely pushes me and You know it's been a great great fun ride with them.
- 45:07[SPEAKER_01]: I so you know be supportive and You know love us more than anything cuz you know we're fighting every day We're trying to be the best players we can be and so my dad knows my expectations So he's gonna try to hold me to that's awesome
- 45:20[SPEAKER_02]: I just want to thank you Connor for coming on.
- 45:22[SPEAKER_02]: Really appreciate it, man.
- 45:24[SPEAKER_02]: It's great.
- 45:25[SPEAKER_02]: Great chatting with you and I wish you the best of luck the rest of this moderately season and and and thereafter last question.
- 45:34[SPEAKER_02]: If you were a betting man, when do you make your major league debut?
- 45:38[SPEAKER_01]: That's a good question.
- 45:41[SPEAKER_01]: But they might go before September next year.
- 45:44[SPEAKER_02]: It's going to happen.
- 45:46[SPEAKER_02]: It's best to let you to achieve that goal.
- 45:49[SPEAKER_01]: Appreciate it.
- 45:50[SPEAKER_07]: Yeah.
- 45:50[SPEAKER_07]: So Connor got one final thought here too.
- 45:52[SPEAKER_07]: You've mentioned your faith a couple times and I'm just curious I shared that with you.
- 45:56[SPEAKER_07]: This this league that you're in.
- 45:58[SPEAKER_07]: The demand of every day you're traveling from different city to city.
- 46:02[SPEAKER_07]: How do you work that into like a normal part of your routine?
- 46:06[SPEAKER_07]: Because I know like I'm a dad to five, you know, I have my own business, you know, my son and I do the sports car stuff like and I struggle to have the rhythm and routine or whatever.
- 46:15[SPEAKER_07]: What is the rhythm and routine look like for you as far as putting that as a priority in your days?
- 46:19[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you know, there's sometimes we can feel like a robot, you know, get to the field around one or two every day.
- 46:25[SPEAKER_01]: And then we have practice stuff leading up to the game.
- 46:28[SPEAKER_01]: So in the mornings, I like to get up.
- 46:30[SPEAKER_01]: I like to, you know, not even think about baseball until I'm headed to the field.
- 46:35[SPEAKER_01]: So like I, like right now, we'll watch the football, you know, taking on ESPN and seeing what's in what happened on the football games.
- 46:43[SPEAKER_01]: just hanging out with the guys, you know, that haven't good teammates makes it so easy just to, you know, get your mind off of things for a little bit.
- 46:51[SPEAKER_01]: So having a good morning routine and just taking it slow and easy and then once you get to the field, you're kind of, you're locked in ready to go.
- 46:58[SPEAKER_01]: So it's kind of been the same way all year.
- 47:00[SPEAKER_01]: And so I can spend been working good.
- 47:02[SPEAKER_01]: Hey, this is Connor Griffin.
- 47:03[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you all for watching the sports car.
- 47:05[SPEAKER_01]: See you.
