- 0:05Speaker 1: This is the Sean O'Connell Show, your home of the
- 0:08Speaker 1: best inside of your youths. Let's get back to OC
- 0:11Speaker 1: from the Murdoch Chevrolet studio of ESPN 700 at 92.1 FM.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Welcome to our number two, the Sean O'Connell Show. We
- 0:23Speaker 2: missed him yesterday, so Jeff Schwartz, kind enough to join
- 0:25Speaker 2: us today to talk all things college and pro football.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Former Oregon Duck, longtime NFL veteran. Betting Insider, Jeff Schwartz.
- 0:35Speaker 2: How are you, sir?
- 0:37Speaker 3: I'm good. Thanks for having me on today. I am
- 0:39Speaker 3: in New York City. I got myself a New York slice.
- 0:41Speaker 3: It's a burrow, so I'm ready to go.
- 0:46Speaker 2: You went fully authentic, Michael Scott style?
- 0:48Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah. New York slice. I did two trips ago though.
- 0:53Speaker 3: I stayed in a new location. I stayed near like
- 0:55Speaker 3: down between Chinatown and little Italy. And I did actually
- 0:58Speaker 3: go to what is considered like the best pizza place
- 1:01Speaker 3: in the city and got a New York slice. And
- 1:03Speaker 3: it was as delectable as you could ever imagine.
- 1:06Speaker 2: It's hard to like, I get paralysis by analysis in
- 1:10Speaker 2: New York city sometimes because there are too many options
- 1:13Speaker 2: of what's supposed to be incredible food. And I'm like, wait, Sushi? No.
- 1:17Speaker 2: I should get pizza while I'm here. No. There's 14 different.
- 1:21Speaker 2: I need a bagel. Oh, crap. Which bagel spot do
- 1:24Speaker 2: I go to? So I'm glad you found what you needed.
- 1:28Speaker 3: I'll get a bagel in the morning, as I always do.
- 1:30Speaker 3: The pizzas are here because it's so thin. Like, it
- 1:33Speaker 3: feels light, lighter than, like, most pizza, which is nice. Because, like,
- 1:36Speaker 3: you can have a couple slices and it doesn't sort
- 1:38Speaker 3: of weight. And you just walk it off. Just go
- 1:40Speaker 3: walk afterwards. Like, it's. I like being here for the
- 1:42Speaker 3: little time I am. Like I couldn't live here, but
- 1:45Speaker 3: I come for 24 hours. I'll walk like five miles today.
- 1:50Speaker 3: I'll get some food. I'll wake up in the morning,
- 1:52Speaker 3: go to work and fly home.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Do you ever get recognized on the street as a
- 1:56Speaker 2: former giant?
- 1:57Speaker 3: No.
- 1:58Speaker 2: Do you ever get recognized on the street as just
- 2:01Speaker 2: an actual giant?
- 2:03Speaker 3: I do.
- 2:04Speaker 1: Yes.
- 2:04Speaker 3: They said, are you an actual giant? I was like, yes, yes.
- 2:06Speaker 3: You got me. My size is like, are you big foot?
- 2:08Speaker 3: I'm like, yep. You got me. They know, they know,
- 2:12Speaker 3: they already know.
- 2:13Speaker 2: It makes sense. The protect college sports act has inexplicably
- 2:18Speaker 2: dominated our conversation the last day. Do you support the
- 2:23Speaker 2: bill as it's currently constructed, Jeff?
- 2:26Speaker 3: No, no. Because the government should stay the heck out
- 2:29Speaker 3: of college sports. It's so funny to me. So if
- 2:34Speaker 3: I told you or anyone listening, right, you have a
- 2:37Speaker 3: non-government job, okay, and you are in favor of the
- 2:43Speaker 3: government capping your wages for your job, like you're an
- 2:49Speaker 3: electrician out there, you're okay if the government goes, you
- 2:52Speaker 3: know what, they make too much money for my liking.
- 2:54Speaker 3: We're going to set a cap on their wages. That's
- 2:57Speaker 3: what they're doing. They're setting a cap on what the
- 2:59Speaker 3: college athletes can make. It's very un-American. And I don't
- 3:04Speaker 3: know why people support it. They're giving anti-trust exemptions and
- 3:09Speaker 3: protections to college sports. you know, like some of it
- 3:14Speaker 3: is fine. I think you will limit portal stuff.
- 3:17Speaker 2: It's okay.
- 3:17Speaker 3: But the fact is like, this is just really un-American
- 3:21Speaker 3: to do that. And I don't know why people seem
- 3:24Speaker 3: okay with capping the wages. I get, you might not
- 3:27Speaker 3: like that. They tell us how to make so much money,
- 3:29Speaker 3: but that's a free market issue, right? If you want
- 3:33Speaker 3: there to be a cap, guess what? Get a bunch
- 3:35Speaker 3: of bargaining agreement done, right? Make the players join a union.
- 3:39Speaker 3: I mean, it makes a strong word, but you know,
- 3:43Speaker 3: negotiate to replace our union. They don't show anything. Why
- 3:46Speaker 3: would they have all the leverage right now? But like
- 3:48Speaker 3: the idea, Sean, that the government would cap the wages
- 3:52Speaker 3: of a private citizen, essentially. But yeah, yeah. They, they
- 3:55Speaker 3: cap the wages for what congressmen can make. Congressmen can wait.
- 3:58Speaker 3: Of course they do the government jobs, but this is
- 4:01Speaker 3: silly that people support this at all.
- 4:04Speaker 2: There was a lesser talked about amendment proposed that would
- 4:08Speaker 2: have capped coaches earnings at $ 5 million per year. And
- 4:13Speaker 2: it almost passed. I'm sure you saw this. It was
- 4:15Speaker 2: a very close vote. It was like 55 to 43
- 4:20Speaker 2: or whatever. What's the math on that? It was close.
- 4:24Speaker 2: And you could see Nick Saban reacted to it. A
- 4:27Speaker 2: lot of people, I think a lot of coaches clutched
- 4:30Speaker 2: up a little. We're like, wait, hold on a minute.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Because they all seem to want some sort of regulation
- 4:37Speaker 2: and cap on player earnings and things like that. But
- 4:40Speaker 2: then when a politician said, all right, here's my amendment.
- 4:44Speaker 2: Let's cap coaches' earnings at $ 5 million. Coaches immediately were like, no, no, no, no, no,
- 4:48Speaker 2: we can't do that.
- 4:51Speaker 3: Of course. But, you know, I've actually thought about the
- 4:53Speaker 3: coach salary issue for a little bit, Sean. You know,
- 4:56Speaker 3: this week, the Lincoln-Riley, you know, issue, you know, that issue, whatever.
- 5:00Speaker 3: We're going to beat them too bad. They want to
- 5:01Speaker 3: fire Lincoln-Riley now. That was a bad decision by us.
- 5:04Speaker 3: Just beat them by, like, one or two, and they
- 5:06Speaker 3: keep Lincoln-Riley forever. You know, but he's making so much money, right?
- 5:10Speaker 3: And you think to yourself, okay, how many coaches are
- 5:14Speaker 3: really worth the $ 13 million they're getting paid, right? Sig,
- 5:18Speaker 3: obviously worth it, right? Kirby Smart's worth it. But at
- 5:22Speaker 3: some point, like these coaches make so much money, how
- 5:26Speaker 3: are we getting the return on the investment on the coach?
- 5:30Speaker 3: And I do wonder if there's going to be a look,
- 5:33Speaker 3: a reckoning at some point, like USC will say, you
- 5:35Speaker 3: know what? We're taking the best coach who makes $ 8
- 5:38Speaker 3: million a year. you know, it just, it's a lot
- 5:42Speaker 3: of money, man. And I'm not saying that coaches don't,
- 5:44Speaker 3: you know, they negotiated, they, they, they earned it, I guess,
- 5:49Speaker 3: by negotiation, but it is a lot of money. Sean,
- 5:52Speaker 3: they're paying these coaches a lot of money. And it
- 5:56Speaker 3: feels like at some point there's going to be a
- 5:58Speaker 3: time that there has to be maybe a pullback.
- 6:01Speaker 2: What would the number on a big 10 and sec
- 6:05Speaker 2: expansion have to be in order to, for all of
- 6:09Speaker 2: us here in the state of Utah to feel good
- 6:11Speaker 2: that Utah and BYU are on the right side of
- 6:14Speaker 2: the line. They get invited to the party because at 40,
- 6:18Speaker 2: I'm going to spin it.
- 6:19Speaker 3: I was coming spinning again. Is that happening?
- 6:21Speaker 2: Well, part of this bill is you can only expand
- 6:26Speaker 2: to 20 teams total, right? And if you're an Oregon fan,
- 6:30Speaker 2: you don't care. You're already on the right side of
- 6:31Speaker 2: the line. If you're a Utah fan, a Texas Tech fan,
- 6:34Speaker 2: if you're a Miami fan, and you think eventually that
- 6:38Speaker 2: the surviving power structure is going to be the SEC
- 6:42Speaker 2: and the Big Ten and whoever gets to be part
- 6:44Speaker 2: of that club, then you're not liking the 20-team maximum
- 6:48Speaker 2: because the Big Ten and Utah have had conversations and
- 6:53Speaker 2: there's an academic fit there. And there's been some flirtation
- 6:57Speaker 2: and probably some aggressive chasing from Utah, but the big
- 7:02Speaker 2: 10 is not going to save a spot for Utah.
- 7:04Speaker 2: If they've only got two left, right. They already have
- 7:06Speaker 2: 18 teams and the sec, that wouldn't make any sense
- 7:10Speaker 2: regionally or any other way. So I think it's different
- 7:14Speaker 2: when you're talking about those fan bases, Colorado, the Arizona schools,
- 7:19Speaker 2: Stanford and Cal Miami, Florida state, like Utah, They're going
- 7:23Speaker 2: to get invited to the SEC, but what about Louisville?
- 7:26Speaker 2: So what is a number that makes sense where we
- 7:30Speaker 2: could feel good about it here in the state of Utah?
- 7:33Speaker 3: I mean, I've always felt that there should be sort
- 7:37Speaker 3: of an upper tier, like a mid-tier or lower tier,
- 7:40Speaker 3: and you just take like the 64 powerful schools and
- 7:44Speaker 3: create your own league and have maybe a couple tiers
- 7:46Speaker 3: in those leagues. I don't know, Sean. I mean, look,
- 7:51Speaker 3: I think if you look at the free agents, let's
- 7:55Speaker 3: say the big, the big 12 and the ACC, you know, Carolina,
- 7:59Speaker 3: Miami feel like one, two, right. For picks. If you
- 8:03Speaker 3: were to choose like the teams that are available in
- 8:06Speaker 3: a draft, maybe Clemson. I don't, where's Utah rank? Probably
- 8:13Speaker 3: Utah is probably the next group of teams. Probably. Right.
- 8:15Speaker 3: I think the big 12, it's probably Texas tech, Utah, BYU, the,
- 8:23Speaker 3: the BYU, the Sunday thing, I don't know if it
- 8:25Speaker 3: hurts them at all for their, you know, their, you know,
- 8:28Speaker 3: play sports on, on those days. Um, but the thing I,
- 8:32Speaker 3: here's the thing, Sean, that I learned and we learned together,
- 8:35Speaker 3: we were doing this during, during the process is that
- 8:40Speaker 3: it's not really about whether you're actually popular or not. Right. It's,
- 8:47Speaker 3: How many big 10 subscriptions can they sell in Los
- 8:50Speaker 3: Angeles versus Portland, Oregon, right? Yeah. Yes. UCLA sells more subscriptions,
- 8:55Speaker 3: even though no one really watches UCLA play, and they
- 8:58Speaker 3: might now, obviously. And it's not about performance. It's not
- 9:03Speaker 3: about your actual TV ratings. It's not even about... I mean,
- 9:11Speaker 3: I promise you there's more Oregon fans than UCLA fans, right,
- 9:13Speaker 3: that actually care about football. Um, so I don't, I
- 9:17Speaker 3: would say all these things, I'm thinking of this from
- 9:19Speaker 3: a football perspective, right? These are football programs that I
- 9:22Speaker 3: think a conference would want, but they might just say,
- 9:25Speaker 3: we want, you know, Texas tech and UCF cause they're
- 9:28Speaker 3: in big States. You know what I mean? Like I, I,
- 9:31Speaker 3: I just, I don't, I don't know what really matters
- 9:34Speaker 3: for conferences. Yeah.
- 9:36Speaker 2: And that's a, that's why when we talk about it
- 9:39Speaker 2: potentially being 40, I'm like that, that I don't think
- 9:42Speaker 2: Utah and BYU get in at 40. If it's 48,
- 9:45Speaker 2: I think they're fine. If it's anything bigger than that,
- 9:49Speaker 2: I think they're fine.
- 9:50Speaker 3: Yeah, 48 probably feels about right for Utah. You know,
- 9:55Speaker 3: football success should matter. You guys have started off a
- 9:57Speaker 3: great year, obviously. You continue to do that. I think
- 10:02Speaker 3: that continues to be important. What was the reaction in
- 10:06Speaker 3: your land about the Michigan game? Were people cheering for that?
- 10:11Speaker 2: I think that there are a lot of people who
- 10:12Speaker 2: want to see– humble pie served to Kyle Whittingham and
- 10:18Speaker 2: to see things, you know, to see him not succeed
- 10:21Speaker 2: at Michigan. I don't count myself among that crew among
- 10:24Speaker 2: that group. There's, you know, there's guys on that staff.
- 10:26Speaker 2: There's players that left that I wish well, but I
- 10:29Speaker 2: think that there was a certain amount of satisfaction taken
- 10:32Speaker 2: by a lot of Utah fans that the former coach was,
- 10:36Speaker 2: was given a little slice of that pie by Iowa
- 10:39Speaker 2: of all teams.
- 10:41Speaker 3: I'm not going to derail this into a call winning
- 10:43Speaker 3: and discussion, but I am curious though. I wanted to
- 10:46Speaker 3: ask you about this. I don't remember like clock management,
- 10:51Speaker 3: end of game issues at Utah. And I feel like
- 10:53Speaker 3: he's had a bunch of them so far in Michigan.
- 10:55Speaker 3: Is that, am I, am I misremembering like his time
- 10:59Speaker 3: in Utah?
- 11:00Speaker 2: There were a couple of seasons where people didn't like
- 11:03Speaker 2: the way he handled certain end of game scenarios, but
- 11:05Speaker 2: it wasn't last year. It wasn't anything recent, right? The,
- 11:08Speaker 2: the criticism that came in, later in his tenure at
- 11:11Speaker 2: Utah were him handling that injury situation really terribly with
- 11:18Speaker 2: cam rising.
- 11:19Speaker 3: And then.
- 11:21Speaker 2: Last year in the BYU loss, the, and this is
- 11:26Speaker 2: something you saw post Iowa game also that he, he
- 11:30Speaker 2: went from this like Jocko willing ultimate accountability, extreme ownership
- 11:34Speaker 2: guy to, to being someone who's just like, well, analytics
- 11:37Speaker 2: said that that's what I should do. So that's what
- 11:39Speaker 2: I did. And it was like, hold on a minute.
- 11:42Speaker 2: That's antithetical to like your extreme ownership. That's antithetical to
- 11:48Speaker 2: you who've always said, no, nobody cares. There's no excuse.
- 11:52Speaker 2: It's all about us. We got to prepare the players
- 11:54Speaker 2: better and all that. And he did that again after
- 11:56Speaker 2: the Iowa game. I don't know how many people out
- 11:58Speaker 2: here saw it, but he threw Jay Hill under the
- 12:01Speaker 2: bus a little bit. He was just like, ah, Jay
- 12:03Speaker 2: Hill decided that was the best defensive structure to be in.
- 12:05Speaker 2: And it's like, whoa, don't put this on Jay Hill.
- 12:08Speaker 2: You're the head coach.
- 12:10Speaker 3: Yeah, it's, you know, I always get someone screwing me
- 12:14Speaker 3: with those press conferences. It's so interesting, you know, how
- 12:18Speaker 3: people process what coaches say. And I think you're in
- 12:22Speaker 3: this situation, you're pretty accurate with like a guy who
- 12:25Speaker 3: screams accountability, but then sometimes doesn't do it. And people
- 12:29Speaker 3: have so strong opinions on coach speaking, what coaches say
- 12:32Speaker 3: at these press conferences. I find it so interesting.
- 12:35Speaker 2: Yeah, it's fascinating. And I know that there's a certain
- 12:38Speaker 2: number of people here in the salt lake market that
- 12:40Speaker 2: are keeping a hateful eye on Michigan football at the
- 12:43Speaker 2: very least. So good.
- 12:44Speaker 3: Hate is, hate is, that's some hate in your heart.
- 12:47Speaker 3: Sports hate, sports hate, not real life hate.
- 12:49Speaker 2: Speaking of, speaking of sports hate and like we were,
- 12:54Speaker 2: we on our PAC 12 today, group chat, Oregon, your
- 12:58Speaker 2: Oregon ducks beat USC. A casualty of that game was
- 13:03Speaker 2: Dante Moore, the starting quarterback with the, The slide, the
- 13:07Speaker 2: late hit, the targeting, the concussion, a bum deal. And,
- 13:12Speaker 2: you know, it obviously stinks. Like, tell me how the
- 13:16Speaker 2: Oregon fan base, the Oregon alumni base is feeling that
- 13:20Speaker 2: you got that huge win. And I think Dylan Raiola
- 13:23Speaker 2: deserves a ton of credit. I've made fun of him
- 13:25Speaker 2: a lot, but he played well. But now you're going
- 13:28Speaker 2: to be without the starting quarterback for a minute.
- 13:32Speaker 3: We're off this week, which is helpful. Right. And then
- 13:34Speaker 3: we play UCLA. I really do think that they're going
- 13:36Speaker 3: to take their time with Dante more. You know, what's crazy.
- 13:38Speaker 3: He actually has one more year of eligibility left and
- 13:41Speaker 3: real does it. I don't think like real is like,
- 13:44Speaker 3: got to go. He's like, Oh, she'll leave him without
- 13:47Speaker 3: them or couldn't. So I think they're taking it really
- 13:49Speaker 3: easy with Dante more.
- 13:50Speaker 1: Right.
- 13:50Speaker 3: There's no rush to bring them back. We've got UCLA
- 13:53Speaker 3: in two weeks. And that was such a scary injury
- 13:55Speaker 3: because you know, you have the fencing response and it
- 13:57Speaker 3: looked like a little bit of like a leg twitch
- 13:59Speaker 3: or seizure almost. I mean, look, I think most organ
- 14:04Speaker 3: fans would agree with me, the same voters as me,
- 14:07Speaker 3: were like, that hit is not the dirtiest hit you've
- 14:11Speaker 3: ever seen. It certainly was dirty and felt that way
- 14:14Speaker 3: in the moment. The celebration afterwards was really poor in
- 14:18Speaker 3: poor taste, right? And that's what a lot of us
- 14:21Speaker 3: are upset about is, look, immediately afterwards, you don't know
- 14:25Speaker 3: they're not knocked out, like, fine, do your celebration. But
- 14:28Speaker 3: then it was like the smiling and the high fives
- 14:31Speaker 3: and teammates, and it feels like just no remorse at all.
- 14:35Speaker 3: There's no one really plays a game to get other
- 14:37Speaker 3: players hurt. And if they tell you that they're probably
- 14:38Speaker 3: a little crazy. And so I think that was a
- 14:42Speaker 3: big deal. Then obviously you saw, if you watch like
- 14:44Speaker 3: the ducks versus them, you know, the reaction from the
- 14:47Speaker 3: USC fans and the reaction from their PR Arbogast, like,
- 14:51Speaker 3: you know, it's like, Speaker 3 I know you were
- 14:55Speaker 3: getting there. So go ahead.
- 14:56Speaker 2: That was, you and I both love Homer radio, right?
- 14:59Speaker 2: Like when you're, when you're the play by play guy
- 15:03Speaker 2: for a team, you're the official voice of a team.
- 15:04Speaker 2: You should be a Homer, right? Like we want that.
- 15:08Speaker 2: Bill Riley's a Homer for the Utes, but he keeps
- 15:10Speaker 2: it between the buoys. It Pete Arbogast for anyone who
- 15:15Speaker 2: didn't see it on the USC Oregon broadcast was like,
- 15:19Speaker 2: that's not targeting. That's not an illegal hit. He wasn't sliding.
- 15:23Speaker 2: And he just, even after the replay, he wouldn't give
- 15:25Speaker 2: it up. It was the most delusional take from a
- 15:28Speaker 2: very veteran broadcaster. It was crazy.
- 15:31Speaker 3: So we used to do sound wars on, on, it
- 15:33Speaker 3: was one of our favorite segments of the week where
- 15:35Speaker 3: we played Homer radio calls and and we would pick
- 15:38Speaker 3: and choose winners. And unfortunately, or fortunately, Mark Johnson just,
- 15:43Speaker 3: good guy, just was a favorite every week. But, you know,
- 15:48Speaker 3: I think Pete probably won a week or two, right?
- 15:50Speaker 3: It was the same thing about Stevens, right? It's like,
- 15:55Speaker 3: after you saw what you did, you continued to celebrate.
- 15:59Speaker 3: And the radio call was just... Atrocious. First, he claimed
- 16:03Speaker 3: that Dante Moore slid to Dove headfirst. And Sean Cody,
- 16:07Speaker 3: poor analyst, is like, no, no, no. His feet are forward.
- 16:11Speaker 3: He's like, no, no, they moved them. And you're like, what? Well,
- 16:14Speaker 3: he moved them. And he wants to replay. He wouldn't
- 16:16Speaker 3: give it up. And you saw the face. It's now
- 16:18Speaker 3: a meme, obviously, of, like, a meme of that. It's like,
- 16:23Speaker 3: you know, it's just... You're going to live forever. Poor
- 16:26Speaker 3: Sean Cody is going to be a meme now because Pete...
- 16:29Speaker 3: But then... we can't even share what our producer Dan
- 16:33Speaker 3: was told us, but like, I, I don't like Peter anymore.
- 16:38Speaker 3: Like I just, like, I, I, I I'm upset with
- 16:42Speaker 3: Dan's listening. I'm sure he is. I'm upset with Dan
- 16:45Speaker 3: for not telling us this. And I would have, I
- 16:47Speaker 3: would have, me and you have generously made it a
- 16:49Speaker 3: hole for Dan.
- 16:50Speaker 2: Correct.
- 16:51Speaker 3: And like, I, I'm like, I'm kind of shocked, honestly.
- 16:55Speaker 3: And this is one of those things where like, everyone
- 16:58Speaker 3: said he is a great person. And I had nothing,
- 17:00Speaker 3: I don't know Peter at all. But it's like, I
- 17:03Speaker 3: don't know. I mean, you saw a guy get concussed
- 17:06Speaker 3: and go to hospital and you just didn't show any
- 17:09Speaker 3: compassion whatsoever at all, like in the radio call. And
- 17:13Speaker 3: I heard some other stuff, again, like kind of behind
- 17:15Speaker 3: the scenes that makes me think you're, I don't know.
- 17:17Speaker 3: You know, you know, you sort of never know someone
- 17:20Speaker 3: until you, you know, you know, they're our personality, but
- 17:23Speaker 3: now it's just a point to see what Dan told us.
- 17:25Speaker 3: And then all, obviously the, the no remorse in the
- 17:28Speaker 3: call whatsoever, a guy was, can you just like have
- 17:30Speaker 3: some remorse, man, the guys on the ground knocked out
- 17:33Speaker 3: with like 85 medical personnel around them.
- 17:36Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 17:36Speaker 2: That it's something you don't want to see on a
- 17:39Speaker 2: college football field and knock on wood. We haven't had
- 17:42Speaker 2: like too many of those horrific things. That have happened
- 17:45Speaker 2: so far this season and.
- 17:47Speaker 3: It's terrible, dude. It really made me... It really, like...
- 17:50Speaker 3: And I'm an Oregon fan, so maybe that's a little
- 17:52Speaker 3: bit differently. And you know me, man. I have, like...
- 17:54Speaker 3: I'm as heartless as I come. I'm really not, but... But, like...
- 18:00Speaker 3: I'm like non-emotional. That kind of got me, man. I
- 18:02Speaker 3: was like, that was really tough. Cause like, you know,
- 18:04Speaker 3: he's your quarterback and it's a big game. And, and
- 18:06Speaker 3: then getting the celebration stuff really pissed me off. I
- 18:09Speaker 3: was really angry when that happened.
- 18:10Speaker 2: I'll tell you one that's made that I've gotten emotional
- 18:13Speaker 2: a couple of times now, Harrison Taggart, former Oregon duck,
- 18:16Speaker 2: who's now went from Oregon to BYU, then to Utah state,
- 18:20Speaker 2: like watching him have to be wheeled out onto the
- 18:25Speaker 2: field that, and like every report I've heard is that
- 18:29Speaker 2: he's going to be okay. And that he's going to recover,
- 18:31Speaker 2: but like, he's probably never going to play football again.
- 18:34Speaker 2: You know, he probably shouldn't ever play football again. And
- 18:37Speaker 2: that's a young man. He's like a, he was an
- 18:39Speaker 2: all-star track athlete, not just a great football player. Like
- 18:42Speaker 2: this is a Supreme athlete who, uh, who got the
- 18:47Speaker 2: mortality that you have to face with a hit like
- 18:49Speaker 2: that and with losing feeling in your limbs, whether it's
- 18:52Speaker 2: complete or partial or whatever, that one got me because
- 18:57Speaker 2: that's a local kid whose course of his life changes
- 19:01Speaker 2: somewhat based on a hit that happened in a game
- 19:04Speaker 2: against the University of Utah. That was crazy to see,
- 19:06Speaker 2: and it's still crazy to see the slow recovery process.
- 19:11Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, it's... It's really tough because, you know,
- 19:17Speaker 3: I think generally speaking, you know, the injuries are not
- 19:22Speaker 3: as bad as people want to make them out, just
- 19:23Speaker 3: holistically in football, right? Like, most guys are fine, right?
- 19:28Speaker 3: But the bad ones are really bad, you know? And
- 19:32Speaker 3: it's really difficult because you have to play the game.
- 19:34Speaker 3: You know that they can happen to you, but you
- 19:37Speaker 3: can't play that way, right, Sean? And I think there's
- 19:39Speaker 3: so much good in football. Like, my son wants to
- 19:43Speaker 3: play ninth grade. And, like... I don't know what I
- 19:46Speaker 3: I don't know, man. I, I wanted to play for
- 19:50Speaker 3: all the things that football does for you. And just,
- 19:52Speaker 3: you know, just as far as mental toughness, physical toughness, persevere.
- 19:57Speaker 3: Like my kid needs to do a training camp, like
- 20:01Speaker 3: a high school, a ninth grade training camp football player.
- 20:04Speaker 3: He needs that for his toughness. You know, I need
- 20:06Speaker 3: him to do that. But then, like, I guess the
- 20:08Speaker 3: injury stuff, and again, it's like one in a million, right?
- 20:11Speaker 3: I mean, it's not, it doesn't happen as much as
- 20:13Speaker 3: we think, but the one in a million is bad, man.
- 20:17Speaker 3: It's scary, and it happens so quickly. There was, the
- 20:22Speaker 3: Tiger one wasn't, it didn't happen, was it Utah State?
- 20:25Speaker 3: There's another play that happened this weekend, I don't know,
- 20:29Speaker 3: a different game, where a guy went to make a tackle, and, like,
- 20:31Speaker 3: his neck compressed. It was a primetime game, and, like,
- 20:34Speaker 3: maybe it was Friday night at some point. It's just, like, Oh,
- 20:38Speaker 3: it's just so, it's just so unfortunate, but it's part
- 20:43Speaker 3: of the game. You hope it doesn't happen to you
- 20:45Speaker 3: or someone, you know, but the one thing I will
- 20:49Speaker 3: say is I really do think these medical staff, man,
- 20:53Speaker 3: Oregon was on it, man, you know, um, I was
- 20:56Speaker 3: talking to her. We were watching a game, and Emmy
- 20:59Speaker 3: was there, my daughter, and she's 10, and she was
- 21:01Speaker 3: kind of asking about what was happening, and we were
- 21:02Speaker 3: telling her about it. And she's like, you know, she
- 21:05Speaker 3: started asking questions. She's 10. If anyone's behind the field,
- 21:07Speaker 3: I was like, tell her about DeMar Amlin. And, you know,
- 21:11Speaker 3: but I was also praising like the medical staff, like
- 21:13Speaker 3: the medical staff and the treatments that you can do
- 21:17Speaker 3: and get, you know, people that get paralyzed and their
- 21:20Speaker 3: ability to walk again, all the medical events as we
- 21:22Speaker 3: have give you hope that if you do get hurt,
- 21:26Speaker 3: you know, there's ways to get back to a hundred percent,
- 21:28Speaker 3: at least close to it.
- 21:31Speaker 2: Jeff Schwartz for another minute or two here on the
- 21:33Speaker 2: Sean O'Connell show in the NFL world. is JJ McCarthy.
- 21:37Speaker 2: Is there any hope for a real resurgence in New
- 21:40Speaker 2: York with him?
- 21:40Speaker 3: The best part of the memes, bro. Like there's, there's
- 21:45Speaker 3: a meme, you know, that meme of, um, of Steve Belichick,
- 21:49Speaker 3: like licking his lips, you know.
- 21:50Speaker 2: Talking about it was like, yeah, it.
- 21:56Speaker 3: Was like, uh, something like can scatter boo when he sees, um,
- 22:02Speaker 3: you know, his quarterback, um, you know, nine, not six,
- 22:07Speaker 3: like no ideas. And there's no idea. I mean, it's
- 22:09Speaker 3: a different guy or something. So I, I, I mean,
- 22:14Speaker 3: I don't know. McCarthy, McCarthy, he's a quarterback who needs reps. Okay.
- 22:19Speaker 3: Maybe the giants would be bad. They should, they give
- 22:20Speaker 3: them reps. Certainly possible, but I don't know why he'd
- 22:24Speaker 3: be good. All of a sudden, I don't understand why
- 22:26Speaker 3: he'd be good. I, you know, I just, people, And
- 22:30Speaker 3: maybe we'll find a route for positive outcomes and negative outcomes. People, man,
- 22:34Speaker 3: they want these guys to be so good sometimes. And
- 22:36Speaker 3: I'm like, it's not going to happen. I was talking
- 22:39Speaker 3: to Kim Ward the other day. People are like, so
- 22:42Speaker 3: many 20 starts. This is the worst quarterback I've ever
- 22:44Speaker 3: seen after 20 starts. You typically don't get, you know,
- 22:48Speaker 3: become average after 30 starts. If you're bad, you're bad.
- 22:51Speaker 3: It's okay to say that. I don't know if he's
- 22:53Speaker 3: any good, dude. So I don't think he does any good, Giants.
- 22:58Speaker 2: Are the Raiders legit at 3-0?
- 23:02Speaker 3: Find out Sunday with the chiefs, right? The poaching matters
- 23:07Speaker 3: so much in this sport. I mean, Clint Kubiak, you
- 23:09Speaker 3: could tell just the influence he's had. They also did
- 23:13Speaker 3: a really good job in free agency. They hit a
- 23:14Speaker 3: lot of home runs in free agency. They went big
- 23:16Speaker 3: in free agency. And you know, so funny because Max
- 23:18Speaker 3: Crosby wanted to be traded obviously. And he almost went
- 23:20Speaker 3: to the Ravens and that's on a three, no Raiders
- 23:22Speaker 3: and having a big role in the three.
- 23:24Speaker 2: No Raiders.
- 23:25Speaker 3: And now he's playing the chiefs who he's tormented my
- 23:27Speaker 3: homes over the years. So looking forward to watching that game.
- 23:31Speaker 3: That'd be a lot of fun.
- 23:34Speaker 2: Do you want to say anything about the Chargers and
- 23:36Speaker 2: Justin Herbert? I know as an Oregon guy, you get
- 23:42Speaker 2: one side of that, and just like an objective NFL observer,
- 23:47Speaker 2: you have the other side of that. So they're 0-3,
- 23:50Speaker 2: and Justin Herbert has not looked great.
- 23:53Speaker 3: I have a lot of problems with what they're doing
- 23:55Speaker 3: in those hands. I thought McDaniel and Herbert we could
- 23:58Speaker 3: fix together. They're running the two offense for Herbert, which
- 24:03Speaker 3: makes no sense. I think we thought, but people thought
- 24:06Speaker 3: they were high on the chargers schematically, not just like, oh,
- 24:09Speaker 3: they'll be better this year, was the fact that Mike
- 24:12Speaker 3: McDaniel would bring the Shanahan-McVay system to Los Angeles. And
- 24:18Speaker 3: that would, you know, in theory gives you easier access throws,
- 24:21Speaker 3: easier runs, and it's a great, really well-designed offense. We
- 24:25Speaker 3: see it every week, how impactful the offense can be.
- 24:28Speaker 3: And instead, he basically is running the two offense for Herbert.
- 24:32Speaker 3: Why are you running this bomb offense for Herbert? It's
- 24:36Speaker 3: like a terrible decision. I, I am, I am just
- 24:39Speaker 3: in awe at how bad the team is. They were,
- 24:43Speaker 3: they forced five turnovers and lost, which is like, you know,
- 24:45Speaker 3: impossible to do. I think Harbaugh is on the way out.
- 24:49Speaker 3: He can't get this fixed. It doesn't feel like he's
- 24:51Speaker 3: going to be the quarter, you know, the, and then, then,
- 24:53Speaker 3: then he goes up to USC, takes that job. I
- 24:56Speaker 3: think he's going to be a, he might have a
- 24:58Speaker 3: show clause still from his, from the penalties.
- 25:01Speaker 2: I don't know. I don't know.
- 25:02Speaker 3: So people, people are talking about like, again, with USC's job,
- 25:07Speaker 3: it was like Sataki taking that job. Do you need
- 25:09Speaker 3: BYU for that? Yes. Yeah.
- 25:13Speaker 2: I think that's, I think if I'm a BYU fan,
- 25:16Speaker 2: that's like one of my biggest fears. I think that's,
- 25:21Speaker 2: I would be very, very worried about Lincoln Riley, you know,
- 25:26Speaker 2: losing favor, which he already has. And then saying, all right,
- 25:30Speaker 2: Kalani Satake, because he had that flirtation with Penn State
- 25:33Speaker 2: and then the promises, and then apparently some of those
- 25:35Speaker 2: were broken, and now trouble in paradise between him and
- 25:39Speaker 2: the athletic director, who he no longer reports to, and
- 25:42Speaker 2: all that stuff. And, you know, USC, you already talked
- 25:46Speaker 2: about the pay thing. They wouldn't pay him $ 13 million,
- 25:48Speaker 2: but they would give him a raise. He's lived in
- 25:52Speaker 2: California before. Like, this is, it's a scary thing.
- 25:56Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm just so curious about jobs like USC because
- 26:00Speaker 3: I can make the case that they should hire Indiana's
- 26:04Speaker 3: defensive coordinator, right? And just pay him $ 7. 5 million a year.
- 26:08Speaker 3: And he's not going to be a guy who's politically correct, right?
- 26:14Speaker 3: He's not going to be a guy that probably, you know,
- 26:17Speaker 3: has the same gravitas as Lincoln Riley did or some
- 26:20Speaker 3: other names he can get. But, like, he'll be a
- 26:22Speaker 3: good coach for you, right? Because you have to get
- 26:23Speaker 3: him to go big name hunting again or go for
- 26:26Speaker 3: good coaches. If they go for good coaches, then Satake's
- 26:31Speaker 3: obviously high up on that list. He's not a big name, though.
- 26:34Speaker 3: He's not going to wow the boosters, I would imagine,
- 26:37Speaker 3: when they hire him. That's USC's biggest problem. What are they?
- 26:41Speaker 3: Are they big game hunters or are they good coach hunters?
- 26:44Speaker 3: Those are two separate things.
- 26:47Speaker 2: If Kalani makes a college football playoff with BYU this year,
- 26:51Speaker 2: is that enough to make him a big name?
- 26:54Speaker 3: Yeah. I actually... I was wrong about Utah. I think
- 27:00Speaker 3: this year, and I talked to my podcast this week
- 27:02Speaker 3: about Utah, big 12 champions. Cause your schedule, I put
- 27:09Speaker 3: you in, if you can even play this well in
- 27:11Speaker 3: the big 12 championship game and Texas tech to me
- 27:14Speaker 3: as a lot of, as a lot of flaws and
- 27:17Speaker 3: you get in the game, you got a chance to
- 27:18Speaker 3: be a playoff team. Like I, like I thought it
- 27:24Speaker 3: would take longer. to gel on the offensive line and
- 27:29Speaker 3: longer to just sort of be on your own team
- 27:34Speaker 3: with Sally, like becoming his own type of coach. Right.
- 27:37Speaker 3: And not following a legend's footsteps and look so far
- 27:40Speaker 3: to be, to be following the plan. They want men
- 27:43Speaker 3: some good, you know, good football game better every week.
- 27:45Speaker 3: I still, you know, don't sometimes love like the two
- 27:49Speaker 3: quarterbacks thing, but, um, and I don't know, like if
- 27:52Speaker 3: you get into, uh, a game where you can't run
- 27:55Speaker 3: the ball, can you throw yourself out of it? It's
- 27:57Speaker 3: always a question, right? Not just a Utah question. I
- 27:59Speaker 3: like to have that question. But you're not going to
- 28:01Speaker 3: maybe play a team this year that can really play
- 28:03Speaker 3: defense to do that to you outside of maybe BYU.
- 28:05Speaker 3: Who are you playing this year? You're really all that defense.
- 28:09Speaker 3: I've got to worry about that defense.
- 28:11Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, Cincinnati might be better than we think.
- 28:15Speaker 2: Houston is good. BYU, I think, is really good. But
- 28:19Speaker 2: none of those games look like you can't win them.
- 28:23Speaker 3: The Holy War is at home this year, right?
- 28:25Speaker 2: Correct.
- 28:25Speaker 3: Are you going to it? Are you going to go?
- 28:27Speaker 3: Of course.
- 28:28Speaker 2: You should come. November 7th. You've got nothing better to do.
- 28:32Speaker 3: Yeah. I'm debating whether I should go to Columbus or not.
- 28:37Speaker 3: We'll see. That's like the best weekend of college football.
- 28:40Speaker 3: That's Miami-Notre Dame that weekend, too.
- 28:43Speaker 2: Yeah, it's huge.
- 28:43Speaker 3: Holy War. Oregon-Ohio State. There's like four other games. I
- 28:47Speaker 3: think Bama-LSU is that weekend as well. Are your kids
- 28:51Speaker 3: into it yet? Are they going to, like, they like
- 28:53Speaker 3: to go to games yet or not? Yeah, we went.
- 28:55Speaker 2: I took them to the Utah State game, and they
- 28:57Speaker 2: loved it. So now they're like, Dad, can we go
- 28:59Speaker 2: to the next one? I'm like, ah, it's a night game.
- 29:01Speaker 3: No.
- 29:02Speaker 2: But I'm going to start forking out for tickets for them.
- 29:07Speaker 3: You said you send the box up. Do you have
- 29:10Speaker 3: a box?
- 29:12Speaker 2: Yeah, when I'm just going by myself, but I can't.
- 29:15Speaker 2: Can't take the kids out there.
- 29:16Speaker 3: I thought you told me you bought a box for
- 29:18Speaker 3: the season.
- 29:19Speaker 2: Oh, I'm sorry. That must have been somebody else. Did
- 29:23Speaker 2: you get a chance to look at more Zaraway Williams
- 29:25Speaker 2: film before we let you go?
- 29:27Speaker 3: I have not had a chance to look at them yet.
- 29:29Speaker 3: I know Dane Brugler is super high on them. It
- 29:32Speaker 3: has not caught my radar yet. I just haven't had
- 29:34Speaker 3: a chance. My problem is most people in this media
- 29:42Speaker 3: business do one sport or the other, right? Right. Cause
- 29:47Speaker 3: it or NFL. I do both. I barely like right
- 29:50Speaker 3: now I have to prepare for this upcoming week of,
- 29:53Speaker 3: for NFL and college football. And my guys like Duke
- 29:55Speaker 3: and grandma are still texting me that clips from like Sunday.
- 29:58Speaker 3: Like I got, I gotta move on, man. I don't,
- 30:02Speaker 3: I don't, I don't have time. I gotta work. Like
- 30:04Speaker 3: most people spend the whole, like a lot of people
- 30:06Speaker 3: that I know like spend the whole, this whole week
- 30:08Speaker 3: watching film of every team. And then, then Sunday rolls around,
- 30:12Speaker 3: they walk the game. They just do it again. I,
- 30:14Speaker 3: I have to like look forward and look back at
- 30:18Speaker 3: the same time. I don't, I wish I had more time, dude.
- 30:19Speaker 3: I just don't. So I'm complaining. I probably should complain,
- 30:22Speaker 3: but man, it's. So a lot of time.
- 30:26Speaker 2: Well, when you did, when you deem us to be
- 30:28Speaker 2: important enough and you watch some zero way Williams.
- 30:32Speaker 3: It's almost Joe Moore award, you know, time to start like,
- 30:36Speaker 3: you know, getting some honor roll in, I will say
- 30:39Speaker 3: Thunderbats five and oh, five and oh Thunderbats number one
- 30:43Speaker 3: in the Charmec 10 U softball standings.
- 30:46Speaker 2: Well, that's, that was going to be my next question.
- 30:48Speaker 2: That was the most important thing to finish on. Are you,
- 30:52Speaker 2: are you, are you in the running for coach of
- 30:54Speaker 2: the year or what?
- 30:56Speaker 3: Uh, I don't know. I mean, I, I have so
- 30:59Speaker 3: many grudges about this league, but no, I'm not.
- 31:00Speaker 2: I'm not.
- 31:03Speaker 3: I shouldn't be because we've thrown seven pitchers in five
- 31:06Speaker 3: games and the other teams are undefeated. I've only thrown
- 31:08Speaker 3: two or three. It's false development time. And we're the
- 31:11Speaker 3: only ones doing it.
- 31:13Speaker 2: I love it. Well, uh, you can call back on
- 31:17Speaker 2: Friday and air your grievances when we do that on
- 31:19Speaker 2: Friday afternoons.
- 31:20Speaker 3: All right. What time is it?
- 31:22Speaker 2: Uh, it's three 30 your time.
- 31:25Speaker 3: You don't want to call in and complain about, about
- 31:26Speaker 3: Charmix softball. Yep.
- 31:28Speaker 2: It's, it's an open forum. You can complain about whatever
- 31:30Speaker 2: you want.
- 31:33Speaker 3: Oh, really? It sounds like savage or stupid. I like it. Okay.
- 31:36Speaker 2: Yeah, it's perfect.
- 31:38Speaker 3: All right, buddy.
- 31:38Speaker 2: All right, dude. Appreciate your time. Enjoy New York.
- 31:40Speaker 3: Bye guys. Bye guys.
- 31:42Speaker 2: Jeff Schwartz. Great stuff from him. Talking all things, football,
- 31:47Speaker 2: NFL and college.
