• 0:46
Speaker 2: Welcome, ladies and gentlemen. So let's talk with Carl Lee
• 0:49
Speaker 2: and my co host Hollis Lewis's back. He's been out
• 0:52
Speaker 2: for a couple of weeks and he is the West
• 0:54
Speaker 2: Virginia Project director of Crisis Intervention Team and in community
• 1:01
Speaker 2: programming or I guess that's actually just programs, right, Yeah,
• 1:05
Speaker 2: And you did give us a little bit of a
• 1:06
Speaker 2: brief information about that, and I'm going to ask one
• 1:09
Speaker 2: quick question about it to your to the degree of
• 1:16
Speaker 2: when you say crisis intervention, like tell us a little
• 1:19
Speaker 2: bit like how what is that and how deep is
• 1:21
Speaker 2: that in in your position? Actually?
• 1:26
Speaker 4: Okay, well, Crisis Intervention Teams Project director for West Virginia. Basically,
• 1:31
Speaker 4: what we do is we bring together first responders that
• 1:34
Speaker 4: includes law enforcement, EMS, firefighters, behavior health, a community advocate
• 1:41
Speaker 4: whether it's mental health, SUD and we train them on
• 1:46
Speaker 4: having a better response to persons in crisis. So essentially,
• 1:50
Speaker 4: we want to redirect those individuals who aren't necessarily doing
• 1:55
Speaker 4: anything criminal justice related in order to get them help.
• 1:58
Speaker 4: Because a lot of times, if somebody's in crisis, law
• 2:01
Speaker 4: enforcement would get called and there's no other you know,
• 2:05
Speaker 4: there's no other choice but either I'm going to let
• 2:08
Speaker 4: this person go or maybe apprehend them. So what we
• 2:11
Speaker 4: try to do is connect law enforcement, firefighters and whomever
• 2:15
Speaker 4: two community resources in which they know are available to
• 2:18
Speaker 4: help these individuals who aren't necessarily doing anything criminal justice
• 2:22
Speaker 4: related persone other than maybe just being a nuisance, so
• 2:25
Speaker 4: not necessarily so in light of.
• 2:29
Speaker 2: Law enforcement or something like that, it's you're trying to
• 2:33
Speaker 2: get an individual who could actually work maybe one on
• 2:36
Speaker 2: one with that individual. Well, yes, we want to do that.
• 2:41
Speaker 4: For example, if there was a call somebody's having you know,
• 2:45
Speaker 4: some sort of mental health crisis and law enforcement arrives
• 2:47
Speaker 4: to the scene, law enforcement can possibly call yeah, because
• 2:50
Speaker 4: normally that's that's the point of contact. So law enforcement
• 2:53
Speaker 4: could call somebody in behavioral health or call somebody who's
• 2:56
Speaker 4: an you know, advocate for SUD and try to get
• 2:59
Speaker 4: that person help. And in addition, law enforcement, through our
• 3:02
Speaker 4: training and through other you know, things that we have,
• 3:05
Speaker 4: law enforcems would know Okay, this person again maybe not
• 3:08
Speaker 4: being an expert, but they know, hey, this person is
• 3:10
Speaker 4: suffering from you know, this, this or that, and they
• 3:14
Speaker 4: would know how to adequately deal with that person.
• 3:16
Speaker 2: So you would be actually hand in hand in a
• 3:21
Speaker 2: sense with the police officer trying to handle that particular
• 3:26
Speaker 2: side of it compared to you know, so if I'm
• 3:29
Speaker 2: the cop, I'm kind of sitting there and trying to
• 3:30
  Speaker 2: let you kind.
• 3:31
Speaker 4: Of work out well, not me necessarily, but but what
• 3:34
Speaker 4: we do is a team. Yeah, what we do is
• 3:36
Speaker 4: help facilitate all that. So we help facilitate those trainings.
• 3:39
Speaker 4: And the best thing I like about it and the
• 3:41
Speaker 4: best way of these playing we connect those community resources
• 3:44
Speaker 4: because a lot of times you have these resources that
• 3:46
Speaker 4: are out in the community. But you know, this is
• 3:50
Speaker 4: kind of like the right hand is not knowing what
• 3:52
Speaker 4: the left hand is doing, although they're kind of naturally
• 3:55
Speaker 4: in partnership with one another. So we can make connect
• 3:57
Speaker 4: those dots, facilitate trainings in the informational and targeting some
• 4:02
Speaker 4: of the similar people exact because there's all the sale,
• 4:05
Speaker 4: all those Yeah, when we look at you know, you
• 4:07
Speaker 4: go downtown, downtown Charlton, you have a lot of people
• 4:09
Speaker 4: whoselfer houselessness, who have sud A substance use disorder issues,
• 4:13
Speaker 4: or have some sort of IDD or mental health crisis
• 4:16
  Speaker 4: happening currently.
• 4:18
Speaker 2: And I we'll go we'll go on after this. But
• 4:22
Speaker 2: but but just traveling over the last couple of weeks,
• 4:25
Speaker 2: I've been actually downtown quite a bit, driving around in downtown,
• 4:30
Speaker 2: and I mean it's challenging to you know. I mean,
• 4:34
Speaker 2: you know, pretty much every corner there's somebody on a corner,
• 4:39
Speaker 2: and you know, you know, it's kind of and I'm
• 4:42
Speaker 2: sure everybody feels kind of like should I give them money?
• 4:44
Speaker 2: Should I not? You know what, you know, what are
• 4:46
Speaker 2: they going to do with the money once I give
• 4:48
Speaker 2: them the money? Like to me, like I'm just trying
• 4:51
Speaker 2: to figure out, like what do we do with that?
• 4:53
Speaker 2: That's not really a question to you. But you know,
• 4:55
Speaker 2: I mean, well, here's the here's the issue.
• 4:57
Speaker 4: It's not that Charleston, if you look at Charleston, it's
• 5:01
Speaker 4: not that Charleston has necessarily a houselessness problem. It's just
• 5:05
Speaker 4: that Charleston has the resources. So if you're coming from
• 5:08
  Speaker 4: a community that's a little bit more desolate, a little
• 5:11
Speaker 4: bit more rule and you and you're you know, you
• 5:14
  Speaker 4: don't have a house, you don't have anything. You're coming
• 5:16
Speaker 4: to Charleston. You're going to Parkersborg, You're going to Huntington,
• 5:18
Speaker 4: You're going to Morgantown. You're going to the communities in
• 5:21
Speaker 4: the cities with resources that could you know, possibly help
• 5:24
Speaker 4: you sustain you while you're on the street. So that's
• 5:27
Speaker 4: kind of the so, you know, being in the city
• 5:30
Speaker 4: and having a plethora of resources, you know, it's a
• 5:32
  Speaker 4: catch twenty.
• 5:33
Speaker 2: Two because you're going to have those individuals. Makes sense,
• 5:36
Speaker 2: all right. Let's Talk is presented by turning Frank Walker.

• 6:15
Speaker 2: opening up, opening football season, the first game. The interesting
• 6:22
Speaker 2: component is and and you know this, and I'm and
• 6:26
Speaker 2: I'm thinking that when when I say this, that almost
• 6:29
Speaker 2: everybody who loves football gets this. So everybody dies for
• 6:35
Speaker 2: first for the opening week, can't wait, especially especially collegiate football.
• 6:42
Speaker 2: So we're gonna we're gonna focus right there on collegiate football. First.
• 6:48
Speaker 2: Usually what you find in collegiate football opening week is
• 6:55
Speaker 2: usually not your best game because you because you either
• 6:59
Speaker 2: you either are playing somebody who's invited you in because
• 7:04
Speaker 2: they think they're gonna beat you. Yeah, or you're the
• 7:07
Speaker 2: team that somebody is probably likely going to beat but
• 7:11
  Speaker 2: you're but usually you're going you're gonna be on a
• 7:15
Speaker 2: You're gonna be on away game. You're not gonna be
• 7:17
Speaker 2: at home. You're playing up or down. Yes, you're playing
• 7:19
Speaker 2: Marshall played at home. They played Stony Brook.
• 7:21
Speaker 4: And and that's sort of and and that's changed in
• 7:24
Speaker 4: the last couple of years. I think so too, Yeah,
• 7:26
Speaker 4: because I mean I think teams now are with the
• 7:29
Speaker 4: thought process. Hey, let's start hot, let's try to get
• 7:32
Speaker 4: us weekend. Yeah, and take a shot at take a
• 7:35
Speaker 4: shot now. You called Stony Brooks, Marshall, you called that
• 7:39
Speaker 4: game this weekend? So how was that for you? What
• 7:40
Speaker 4: did you see from Marshall?
• 7:42
Speaker 2: It was, it was it was actually interesting. And believe
• 7:45
Speaker 2: it or not, I wasn't. I wasn't overly impressed with Marshall,
• 7:50
Speaker 2: especially early on and and and again first game, everybody
• 7:56
Speaker 2: getting the field, and I think the second half, I
• 7:59
Speaker 2: think it was clear that they were it was clear
• 8:01
Speaker 2: they were the best team. But I felt like there
• 8:03
Speaker 2: was a back and forth punt punt, punt punt with
• 8:07
Speaker 2: a team that I'm thinking, like, no, you you know,
• 8:09
Speaker 2: Like I was in my mind, I had envisioned right
• 8:13
Speaker 2: down the field, score, you know, three plays and out
• 8:18
Speaker 2: right back down the field and score. I kind of
• 8:20
Speaker 2: had that in my mind. And it and and it
• 8:23
Speaker 2: was maybe a quarter or so that that didn't happen,
• 8:27
Speaker 2: and I was like, what is going on? You know?
• 8:29
Speaker 2: And and I'm and I thought to myself, like, you know,
• 8:34
Speaker 2: and and then doing and thinking and and calling the
• 8:37
Speaker 2: game and doing the color for the game is kind
• 8:40
Speaker 2: of a easy kind of thing because I'm sitting there
• 8:43
Speaker 2: thinking to myself, like, what if this is, you know,
• 8:46
Speaker 2: a major team, what if they're playing a major team.
• 8:49
Speaker 2: It's kind of hardest s I agree. And again, first game,
• 8:53
Speaker 2: first game, and you're playing first game conference, you're not
• 8:57
Speaker 2: playing the conference, and you already have all week long,
• 9:02
Speaker 2: you're I'm sure coach Huffins was saying, don't take this
• 9:06
Speaker 2: team for a second, don't take it. And you're watching
• 9:11
Speaker 2: film and you're thinking to yourself and the ain't you
• 9:14
Speaker 2: know they they haven't won many games, and you know
• 9:18
Speaker 2: we're supposed to be good. There's no way that this
• 9:22
Speaker 2: team can beat us, which that's how you end up
• 9:25
Speaker 2: getting beat. But so I think when they started out,
• 9:29
Speaker 2: I think they were they were they weren't ready. I
• 9:33
Speaker 2: don't think they were mentally ready. All the hype is
• 9:35
Speaker 2: coming forward to being the first game. You're out on
• 9:38
Speaker 2: the field, you're playing and all that kind of stuff.
• 9:40
Speaker 2: The crowd's there and you're just excited behind that, but
• 9:44
Speaker 2: on the field, it just didn't It didn't show until later.
• 9:47
Speaker 4: And it may And again, playing a team that you
• 9:50
Speaker 4: you know you're supposed to beat. It may take a
• 9:52
Speaker 4: week or two for you to actually, you know, being
• 9:55
Speaker 4: at this first game, so it may take a little
• 9:57
Speaker 4: while for you to actually get in your rhythm and
• 9:58
Speaker 4: get in your mod I.
• 10:00
Speaker 2: Think and I think that the coaches coordinate this position. Coaches.
• 10:04
Speaker 2: I think they talked. They probably were heavy, kind of
• 10:10
Speaker 2: a heavy tone in the early part of the game,
• 10:13
Speaker 2: talking about down the road, We're not gonna be able
• 10:15
Speaker 2: to play like this in the first half, you know,
• 10:17
Speaker 2: so there probably got that and it was one of
• 10:20
Speaker 2: those kind of games that I think that game was
• 10:22
Speaker 2: one of those type that you know, the coaches get
• 10:24
Speaker 2: to make an example of not playing hard even though
• 10:28
Speaker 2: you won. Yeah, you got to go off on them
• 10:32
Speaker 2: because you know that they didn't play their best, especially
• 10:35
  Speaker 2: early on.
• 10:36
Speaker 4: And that's always a tricky spot as a coach. You know,
• 10:39
Speaker 4: when you clearly beat a team handedly, but you know
• 10:42
Speaker 4: there's a lot to break down in film, and it's
• 10:44
Speaker 4: not insially a quote unquote great performance even though you
• 10:47
  Speaker 4: won decisively.
• 10:48
Speaker 2: And I'll say this late later on in the game,
• 10:55
Speaker 2: they looked really good. But the interesting component is you're
• 10:58
Speaker 2: you're talking about a three quarter back situation there. You
• 11:02
Speaker 2: got three three guys that you're trying to figure out
• 11:04
Speaker 2: who's the guy. I don't know who the guy is
• 11:08
Speaker 2: at this point, but there's no way you're going to
• 11:10
Speaker 2: be able to go into this game this week with
• 11:15
  Speaker 2: three guys.
• 11:16
Speaker 4: Yes, I'm sure they were kind of testing some waters.
• 11:19
Speaker 4: So I probably, I would say probably the coaches know
• 11:22
Speaker 4: who that guy is.
• 11:23
  Speaker 2: I'm gonna I wouldn't make a guess, but I will
• 11:28
Speaker 2: say this, you have to be mobile in today's game.
• 11:32
Speaker 2: I would If you're going to throw the ball, you've
• 11:34
Speaker 2: got to be mobile. I don't care how well you
• 11:36
Speaker 2: throw the ball. Well, no, no, I care about that.
• 11:39
Speaker 2: You got to throw the ball to be accurate. Yes, yeah,
• 11:42
Speaker 2: But I'm just saying, if you can throw the ball
• 11:45
Speaker 2: really well, you better be Tom Brady. If you can't run, okay,
• 11:49
Speaker 2: got you? You know what I'm saying, because because because
• 11:52
Speaker 2: the day's game, man, it's it's that pocket is not
• 11:56
Speaker 2: staying there long and you're gonna have to get out
• 11:58
Speaker 2: of it. All right.
• 11:59
Speaker 4: So now now in Marshall play WVU. WVU lost the
• 12:03
Speaker 4: pen again. I don't know what the expectations of the
• 12:08
Speaker 4: fan base were or the pundits, but in my mind,
• 12:13
Speaker 4: this was a game that had to be won again.
• 12:16
Speaker 4: Not to say they were better or worse whatever, but
• 12:19
Speaker 4: I think as a statement piece, I think to come
• 12:21
Speaker 4: out the gate strong, and I think for the program
• 12:24
Speaker 4: to take that next level, you know, particularly like in
• 12:28
Speaker 4: light that there is a twelve team playoff this year
• 12:31
Speaker 4: and you got one of twelve opportunities to win a
• 12:34
Speaker 4: national championship, unlike any other time in college football history.
• 12:38
Speaker 2: So this was one you had to get for me. Okay,
• 12:42
Speaker 2: and we and we and we talked about this prior
• 12:44
Speaker 2: to prior to I don't know if I mean Penn
• 12:52
Speaker 2: State has I think they put I think I said
• 12:54
Speaker 2: sixty games, sixty sixty something like sixty games, and I
• 12:58
Speaker 2: think Penn State is only one. Maybe I mean West
• 13:01
Speaker 2: Virginia is only one, six or eight of them, and
• 13:05
Speaker 2: it's lopside of lopside of like yeah, like forty fifty
• 13:09
Speaker 2: to eight or something some crazy number like that. I'm
• 13:14
Speaker 2: I don't when you say Penn State and WVU, see,
• 13:19
Speaker 2: I'm I'm go way back. I'm way older than you,
• 13:23
Speaker 2: and I'm thinking I don't remember them winning beating Penn State.
• 13:29
Speaker 2: The moment you say Penn State and w it's an L.
• 13:32
  Speaker 2: It's l for you. I mean, I just don't and
• 13:36
Speaker 2: what what what's amazing to me, which I guess it
• 13:39
Speaker 2: shouldn't be, is like the fan base was upset. You
• 13:43
  Speaker 2: gotta be upset.
• 13:46
Speaker 4: I mean, if you if you look at Georgia Tech,
• 13:48
Speaker 4: Florida State, Georgia Tech just made a statement again, we
• 13:51
Speaker 4: don't Florida State may not be any good this year, right,
• 13:54
Speaker 4: Penn State might not be any good the right.
• 13:57
Speaker 2: But but you gotta make But again, you're on the
• 14:01
Speaker 2: field with the team that's ranked eight, top team. Yes,
• 14:05
Speaker 2: So now when you start talking about eight and you
• 14:08
Speaker 2: have nothing behind your name, you got nothing nothing. My
• 14:13
Speaker 2: issue isn't really with the team or the coach. My
• 14:16
Speaker 2: issue is with the fan base. But I think the
• 14:20
Speaker 2: base is right. I'm with the fan base on this one.
• 14:23
Speaker 2: I don't think like you gotta win this. I know
• 14:25
Speaker 2: you gotta you know you want to win this. No,
• 14:31
Speaker 2: I think you want to win. I'm saying this is
• 14:34
Speaker 2: a to me. This was again you know, game's over,
• 14:37
Speaker 2: you gotta move on with your season, blah blah blah.
• 14:38
Speaker 2: But this that game that day was a must win
• 14:42
Speaker 2: for me. That's the number eight team in the country
• 14:45
Speaker 2: w VU. If you want to take the step to
• 14:47
Speaker 2: get yourself in a national playoffs, in the national spotlight,
• 14:51
  Speaker 2: that's a game you gotta win, because I don't know,
• 14:54
Speaker 2: you talking about, you know, maybe jumping into a top
• 14:56
Speaker 2: fifteen rank. Not only you talking about having a trajectory
• 14:59
Speaker 2: that's gonna take you to the playoffs, but also that's
• 15:01
Speaker 2: going to leave recruits transfers that's gonna put a different
• 15:04
Speaker 2: spotlight on you. And I get all that. And and
• 15:08
  Speaker 2: I'm not I'm not mountaineer hating because I'm a Marshall,
• 15:12
Speaker 2: No really, I'm not. I'm just thinking, like if i'm
• 15:16
Speaker 2: if I'm looking at this game, and I'm looking at history,
• 15:23
Speaker 2: WU has not beat them at ten, at least at
• 15:26
Speaker 2: a max at less than ten. Okay, but they've been playing.
• 15:32
Speaker 2: This is a different era now, you know, year to year,
• 15:36
Speaker 2: if you get if you get five good transfers in,
• 15:38
Speaker 2: that might take you from from from no rank again
• 15:41
Speaker 2: to the college football playoffs. So it's a different it's
• 15:43
Speaker 2: it's a different era now. But I think it happened.
• 15:46
Speaker 2: But and again I'm not always into the rankings either. Yes,
• 15:50
  Speaker 2: but I don't know I don't know really how you
• 15:53
Speaker 2: picked that. But in this particular situation, a non ranked
• 15:58
Speaker 2: team with a ranked team, a top ten ranked team,
• 16:02
Speaker 2: top ten, that makes volumes to me that that ain't
• 16:06
Speaker 2: gonna that ain't gonna turn out good.
• 16:08
Speaker 4: Normally I'm not in most cases, maybe not, but I
• 16:11
  Speaker 4: just think.
• 16:12
Speaker 2: But but you're saying most cases, it did happen in
• 16:14
Speaker 2: this and it did.
• 16:15
  Speaker 4: You're right, You're right. Like I said, I can't necessarily
• 16:17
Speaker 4: dispute that. I can't even necessarily dispute this historical significance. Although,
• 16:22
Speaker 4: like I said, it's a different era. But I'm just saying,
• 16:25
Speaker 4: like and again, even to lose the game, you know,
• 16:30
Speaker 4: maybe if it was overtime or you took them down
• 16:32
Speaker 4: to the wire in the fourth quarter, that's different than
• 16:34
Speaker 4: just kind of just you know, just getting beat up.
• 16:37
Speaker 4: You know, you didn't get beat horribly thirty four to twelve,
• 16:40
Speaker 4: but you ain't really compete that much neither.
• 16:44
Speaker 2: Yeah, because because twelve twelve points against an eight an
• 16:49
Speaker 2: eight ranked team, Yeah, and you're now thirty four. Yeah,
• 16:53
Speaker 2: and you gave up thirty four, I mean, which ain't terrible.
• 16:56
Speaker 2: It's not really terrible. You know, if that was any
• 16:58
Speaker 2: other two teams. You know, we wouldn't we wouldn't even
• 17:01
Speaker 2: be having this conversation probably, but because this is this
• 17:06
Speaker 2: is what we have called a rivalry, and and I
• 17:12
Speaker 2: was gonna make something I do. I do think that's
• 17:16
  Speaker 2: where it's at. I do think that. I think it's
• 17:18
Speaker 2: that old school, you know. And again, Pitt's right close
• 17:22
Speaker 2: to us, penn State, you know, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is right,
• 17:27
Speaker 2: you know, it's just just just right up the street
• 17:29
  Speaker 2: from w U. So it's a rival. It's a rival
• 17:34
Speaker 2: in that in that kind of mind, because the statistics
• 17:36
Speaker 2: on wins and lasses are not. This ain't pitt w U.
• 17:41
  Speaker 4: No, I don't think. I don't think Virginia Tech. So
• 17:45
Speaker 4: staying with college football, Dabbo Swing. Dabbo Swing, he's acclaimed
• 17:50
Speaker 4: coach at Clemson UH national Championships, had a stellar program
• 17:55
Speaker 4: up until this current era of n I A on
• 17:58
Speaker 4: transfer and Dabbo is one of the few coaches. I
• 18:02
Speaker 4: think it's Dabbo Sweeney and Clemson, Navy Army, the military
• 18:07
Speaker 4: academies that don't take transfers, and I don't think they
• 18:11
Speaker 4: pay do too much with NIL He's basically refused to
• 18:14
Speaker 4: do that and he just got. You know, last season
• 18:18
Speaker 4: didn't go great. This opening season again, now mind you
• 18:22
Speaker 4: they played Georgia, which is kind of like maybe a
• 18:27
Speaker 4: semi pro football team at the NFL level talent. They
• 18:30
Speaker 4: got beat up on. But I guess the story is
• 18:33
Speaker 4: that does he continue down this road or does he adapt?
• 18:40
Speaker 2: I think he's going to continue down that road for
• 18:43
Speaker 2: two reasons. I think I think he buys it. I
• 18:47
Speaker 2: think that he's bought into that belief that, you know,
• 18:51
Speaker 2: college football should be the college football that he remembers. Yeah.
• 18:59
Speaker 2: And then on the other side, I don't think that
• 19:01
Speaker 2: he is concerned about being fired.
• 19:05
Speaker 4: I can say he got a sixty million reasons why.
• 19:10
Speaker 2: So, Yeah, so I can do it the way that
• 19:13
Speaker 2: I want. I'm setting the example because for the people
• 19:16
Speaker 2: who sit and sit in a meeting room talking about
• 19:19
Speaker 2: this sounds like a great idea, and him, being a
• 19:22
Speaker 2: great Hall of Fame, first ballot Hall of Fame coach,
• 19:27
Speaker 2: is likely gonna take these ls just to prove that
• 19:32
  Speaker 2: y'all do what y'all want. I'm gonna recruit. I'm gonna
• 19:35
Speaker 2: recruit my guys. If they leave, they leave, we'll play
• 19:39
Speaker 2: who we got. See that's I love it.
• 19:42
Speaker 4: No, I know you, I love it, but I think
• 19:45
  Speaker 4: that's terrible and I think it say it's a terrible
• 19:47
Speaker 4: precedent because number one, you're not doing as a coach.
• 19:51
Speaker 4: Number One, you're not doing what you need to do
• 19:54
Speaker 4: to succeed and win, which is your job. Number two,
• 19:58
Speaker 4: number two, number two, it's hypocritical because again, don't worry
• 20:03
Speaker 4: about the players. You, whether you fire, whatever, whatever.
• 20:06
  Speaker 2: The biot it.
• 20:07
Speaker 4: You got sixty million dollars in a bio, So it
• 20:09
Speaker 4: don't matter what happened, you win or lose. They let
• 20:12
Speaker 4: you go, you walk whatever. You got sixty million dollars
• 20:15
Speaker 4: waiting on you, unlike them players. So what I'm saying
• 20:18
Speaker 4: is that you have an obligation to that university. You
• 20:22
Speaker 4: have an obligation to those players to do what's necessary
• 20:25
Speaker 4: to win. This ain't about proving no point.
• 20:29
Speaker 2: I like. I liked that stance. You know that that's
• 20:33
Speaker 2: a lawyer kind of stance. I think I think you
• 20:35
Speaker 2: did a good job of presenting that. But I'm gonna
• 20:38
Speaker 2: make the case that at some point when the system
• 20:44
Speaker 2: is broken, and I'm gonna use a horrible one right now.
• 20:48
Speaker 2: But if you thought there's a whole lot of people
• 20:52
Speaker 2: who thought slavery was right. Oh, come on, I'm just
• 20:55
Speaker 2: saying I said, I said it was a bad one.
• 20:58
Speaker 2: I said it was a bad one. It's horrible, but
• 21:01
Speaker 2: it was the first dedicative of mouth, right, And I'm
• 21:04
Speaker 2: and so they and some people didn't necessarily maybe didn't
• 21:07
Speaker 2: necessarily do it for the fact of color or anything.
• 21:10
Speaker 2: They just did it. They need help whatever, whatever excuse
• 21:12
Speaker 2: you use. But I think what he's doing is he's saying, like,
• 21:18
Speaker 2: this is how it's supposed to be. I'll take I'll
• 21:22
Speaker 2: take my risk because the kids who are not going
• 21:25
Speaker 2: to leave, they're gonna get what they're supposed to get
• 21:28
Speaker 2: out of that sport. Because see, sports is not what
• 21:32
Speaker 2: we've done. What we've done is we've turned sports into
• 21:35
Speaker 2: winning and losing. Who's winning is that you get all
• 21:38
Speaker 2: the great accolades because you win. Sports is not really
• 21:42
Speaker 2: at the ground level, at its core. There are more
• 21:46
Speaker 2: kids who play it who get nothing out of it
• 21:48
Speaker 2: other than teamwork, discipline, and the things that it's supposed
• 21:53
Speaker 2: to bring. And that's what Sweeney is. I think that's
• 21:58
Speaker 2: what he's after. He's after the core values of what
• 22:02
Speaker 2: it used to be about. No, because because for the
• 22:06
Speaker 2: kid that's leaving for ni O money because he only
• 22:12
Speaker 2: got twenty thousand there and somebody's gonna give him one
• 22:16
Speaker 2: hundred thousand. He's leaving only because of the money. He's
• 22:23
Speaker 2: leaving only because of the money. So money, and again
• 22:26
Speaker 2: I get all the money that's in sports, especially in
• 22:29
Speaker 2: what used to be amateur sports. Yeah, I think it's terrible.
• 22:35
Speaker 4: See, I don't think Dabbosweeney Bison in any of those ideas.
• 22:39
Speaker 4: I think number one, this is a national championship coach,
• 22:43
Speaker 4: so he's about winning, but he's also about which may
• 22:48
Speaker 4: be higher than winning. It's not a moral stance, it's
• 22:51
Speaker 4: a control stance. And he is at a point, just
• 22:54
Speaker 4: like Nick Saban, where now you don't control, you don't
• 22:58
Speaker 4: you don't have at least a one hundred percent control.
• 23:01
Speaker 4: As we know coaches in the past. Did a football
• 23:04
Speaker 4: coach at like, particularly at a major level program, Oh,
• 23:07
Speaker 4: you controlled one hundred percent of pretty much everything. This
• 23:12
Speaker 4: is this is a control issue. And now that you
• 23:15
Speaker 4: don't have control, now it's out of your control. All
• 23:17
Speaker 4: these other moving parts now boosters can come in kind
• 23:20
Speaker 4: of in and out freely, and it's and it's more
• 23:23
Speaker 4: to it, although probably some of This has always been
• 23:25
Speaker 4: there in college sports, but it's being more. More's added
• 23:28
Speaker 4: on to it. And now that I don't have to control,
• 23:31
Speaker 4: I don't want to adapt to what's going on because
• 23:34
Speaker 4: if I'm if I'm a recruit number one, if I can,
• 23:37
Speaker 4: and I'm sure they give out some sort of nil, right,
• 23:40
Speaker 4: but if but now I know that I'm going there
• 23:44
Speaker 4: and I'm not going to play with the best players possible.
• 23:47
Speaker 4: Because when we talk about transfers, you don't necessarily need
• 23:50
Speaker 4: to do like Dion because when you look at the Georgia's,
• 23:53
Speaker 4: the Alabama's, the Michigan most of sixty seven percent of
• 23:56
Speaker 4: their talent is homegrown. But it's that you may need
• 23:59
Speaker 4: that that tackle that you may have to go find,
• 24:02
Speaker 4: You may have to find that free safety, You may
• 24:03
Speaker 4: have to find that quarterback to come in and fill
• 24:06
Speaker 4: a gap. That's really how the transferred porters is supposed
• 24:09
Speaker 4: to be used. You're not supposed to do like Dion
• 24:10
Speaker 4: necessarily have a whole team every year unless that's what
• 24:13
Speaker 4: you just have to do. So I think his failure
• 24:17
Speaker 4: to adapt is going to cost not only him, but
• 24:20
Speaker 4: it costs the kids in the university as well. And
• 24:23
Speaker 4: they got to if I was the university. I'm looking
• 24:25
Speaker 4: in a way to get rid of him and say
• 24:26
Speaker 4: myself sixty million, I'm trying to figure out.
• 24:30
Speaker 2: Sorry, we're gonna take a quick break and I'm gonna
• 24:32
Speaker 2: come back and respond to that. All right, We'll be
• 24:35

• 25:34
Speaker 3: Now back to the conversation.
• 25:37
Speaker 2: All right, ladies and gentlemen, we're back. And I'm I
• 25:42
Speaker 2: have to respond to Hollis's reality of how he sees,
• 25:49
Speaker 2: how he is, how it is yeah, versus how it
• 25:54
Speaker 2: should be okay, because I truly believe that there's there's
• 25:58
Speaker 2: a there's an actual way that it's should be. And
• 26:01
  Speaker 2: I think it's I'm again, I'm gonna go old school
• 26:04
Speaker 2: on you. I'm gonna I'm gonna stay in the old school.
• 26:07
Speaker 2: I'm okay with you paying. Okay, I'm okay with you paying.
• 26:13
Speaker 2: But the movement should not because what made you, what
• 26:17
Speaker 2: made you go to Colorado? What made you go to
• 26:21
Speaker 2: Notre Dame? Coach recruits you and then you the opportunity
• 26:27
Speaker 2: of you getting more money or maybe to a different
• 26:31
Speaker 2: team just for the sake that your team didn't win.
• 26:37
Speaker 2: What lessons? What lessons? What true life lessons are they
• 26:40
Speaker 2: getting in this? Because because the reality of this is
• 26:43
Speaker 2: not once they get done, so they let's say they
• 26:47
Speaker 2: don't they don't show up and not all these guys
• 26:50
Speaker 2: that are making money are not making They're not gonna
• 26:52
Speaker 2: make any more money going to the pros, and a
• 26:56
Speaker 2: lot of them may not even be in the draft.
• 26:59
Speaker 2: So so I mean, you you lean college rich, you
• 27:08
Speaker 2: know what I'm saying. I mean in some case and
• 27:10
Speaker 2: in some cases with a good fresh start. Yeah, in
• 27:14
Speaker 2: the life. Yeah, if you're a major program, you're power five.
• 27:18
  Speaker 2: I just don't. I just don't. I can't.
• 27:22
Speaker 4: But I think that's over with all the life lessons.
• 27:24
Speaker 4: That stuff is done. I believe that this is business now.
• 27:29
Speaker 4: So when we're talking about business, are we talking about
• 27:32
Speaker 4: you're gonna do good business or you or you just not?
• 27:35
Speaker 4: Are you gonna do business or you're not? And with
• 27:37
Speaker 4: Dabbo Sweeney, it's like he's choosing just not to do
• 27:39
Speaker 4: business because to your point, Okay, you're paying whatever, that's cool.
• 27:43
Speaker 4: And I'm not telling you again, as as I said earlier,
• 27:45
Speaker 4: you don't have to bring in a whole new roster.
• 27:47
Speaker 4: But if you know you don't have a quarterback, go
• 27:50
Speaker 4: find you a quarterback. If you know you don't have
• 27:52
  Speaker 4: a d line, what's wrong?
• 27:53
Speaker 2: But what's wrong with what's wrong with going and recruiting
• 27:58
Speaker 2: that guy may not be ready to play, you know
• 28:01
Speaker 2: what I'm saying. But then whose fault is that that
• 28:03
Speaker 2: you're stuck in that position because you you you thought
• 28:07
Speaker 2: that guy, but you thought that guy was gonna be great,
• 28:10
Speaker 2: and all of a sudden, now he's not as good
• 28:11
Speaker 2: as what you thought he was.
• 28:13
Speaker 4: I mean, no, no, not necessarily good as what he
• 28:17
Speaker 4: may not just be ready to play at that point.
• 28:19
Speaker 4: He made a guy that needs a set for two
• 28:21
Speaker 4: or three years. But in that two or three years
• 28:23
Speaker 4: of him setting, right now, you got a team that's
• 28:26
Speaker 4: ready to go. What I'm saying is like, if you
• 28:28
Speaker 4: got a team that's ready to go, but you know,
• 28:30
Speaker 4: you need about four to five positions, And I'm saying again,
• 28:34
Speaker 4: you ain't gotta go get out the whole the whole roster,
• 28:36
Speaker 4: but go fill those four or five position with positions
• 28:39
Speaker 4: would experienced guys who are ready to plug and play.
• 28:43
  Speaker 4: That's what teams are doing. It's like, that's pretty a
• 28:45
Speaker 4: pretty simple concept to me. And like I said to me,
• 28:49
Speaker 4: he's doing a disservice to the university and his team.
• 28:51
  Speaker 2: Franklin, I I don't. I just don't see it. And again,
• 29:01
Speaker 2: I'm quite a bit older than you, and mindset's probably
• 29:05
  Speaker 2: stuck in old school. I just I don't I don't
• 29:12
  Speaker 2: want I don't like it.
• 29:13
  Speaker 4: I don't like it, you know, I don't like it
• 29:15
Speaker 4: because we don't we're not having those those college Saturday
• 29:19
Speaker 4: morning heroes like we used to have, like Tim Tebow
• 29:22
Speaker 4: being in Florida for four years. That's like awesome, that's
• 29:25
Speaker 4: great memories. But that's just not okay. So let's go
• 29:29
  Speaker 4: to that point.
• 29:31
  Speaker 2: So here's a here's a guy that is great, a
• 29:34
Speaker 2: great college athlete, great, I mean just great, and just
• 29:39
Speaker 2: considered the best player in his class. And yet he
• 29:44
Speaker 2: doesn't necessarily he doesn't necessarily transit transition very well into
• 29:51
Speaker 2: the league. Yeah, and so to me, I see that
• 29:57
Speaker 2: as today that guy is making all kinds of money
• 30:05
Speaker 2: that for for collegiate football, which is amateur sports. Was was,
• 30:11
Speaker 2: but it is that they call it that. And so
• 30:15
Speaker 2: now all of a sudden, you could you imagine him
• 30:18
Speaker 2: in these days right now? I mean, but see, that's
• 30:22
Speaker 2: see I'm thinking that's the difference in collegiate football and
• 30:28
Speaker 2: professional football and the judgment or how good you can
• 30:32
Speaker 2: be in in collegiate football and still not be able
• 30:35
Speaker 2: to make it in the Pros and you're making money
• 30:38
Speaker 2: nearly like some of the guys that are in the Pros.
• 30:41
Speaker 2: For some guys, for some guys, he would have been
• 30:44
Speaker 2: that guy. He would have been that guy. And so
• 30:47
  Speaker 2: I just I just don't see. I just don't see
• 30:50
Speaker 2: how how that becomes something acceptable. And I don't even know.
• 30:58
Speaker 2: And again I blame it on the suits.
• 31:02
Speaker 4: No, I'm blaming on the suits and the coaches, because
• 31:05
Speaker 4: the fact of the matter is players weren't asking for this.
• 31:08
Speaker 4: That That's what we gotta remember. If the NC double A,
• 31:12
Speaker 4: if the coaches, if they had any scruples about them,
• 31:15
Speaker 4: ten to fifteen years ago, all these guys were asking
• 31:18
Speaker 4: forth was a couple thousand a month. They were literally asking, hey, man,
• 31:22
Speaker 4: can I get twenty five five thousand dollars a month?
• 31:25
Speaker 2: They weren't asking for all this. But but you but
• 31:27
Speaker 2: but you know, like I know, the moment that you make,
• 31:30
Speaker 2: the moment you make two hundred dollars. Yeah, And I'm thinking, well,
• 31:34
Speaker 2: wait a minute. You know, I've been here for three years,
• 31:39
Speaker 2: and I've been playing my whole three years, and I
• 31:41
  Speaker 2: deserve four hunts.
• 31:44
Speaker 4: But that's and then you know what that might be true,
• 31:46
Speaker 4: But the NC double A had the opportunity to set
• 31:49
Speaker 4: all they they could have captained, they could have started through.
• 31:53
Speaker 4: Now there's no capital now because you're not necessarily going back.
• 31:55
Speaker 4: I mean, I guess you could possibly, but I think
• 31:57
Speaker 4: at this point some schools will rebel and just doing
• 32:00
Speaker 4: what n Cuba totally. And I'm saying they had the
• 32:03
Speaker 4: opportunity to say, okay, if you if you're here, you
• 32:05
Speaker 4: make this. If you're there, you make this, and it's
• 32:07
Speaker 4: just across the board and it's what everybody get. They
• 32:09
Speaker 4: had the opportunity to do that, and they didn't. They
• 32:11
Speaker 4: fumbled it. Now the result is this, So this is
• 32:15
Speaker 4: what happens when you don't, When you don't, when you're
• 32:18
Speaker 4: not equitable in the money that you're bringing in, this
• 32:22
  Speaker 4: is what happens.
• 32:24
Speaker 2: All right, So is there going to be is there
• 32:29
Speaker 2: even a possibility of a solution? Are we are we
• 32:31
Speaker 2: sitting in the room, sitting down and trying to have
• 32:34
Speaker 2: this discussion and try to figure.
• 32:35
Speaker 4: Out how do we come back? How do we reverse it?
• 32:38
  Speaker 4: What I mean, it's just a Now. I think now
• 32:41
Speaker 4: a lot of a lot of entities have to agree.
• 32:44
Speaker 4: So I think if you had the the way I pictured.
• 32:47
Speaker 4: It is the for example, the n C double A,
• 32:49
Speaker 4: the collegiate presidents, the eighties, and the coaches. They all
• 32:53
Speaker 4: have to sit and agree on kind of what's what's
• 32:56
Speaker 4: going to be good and what's going to be not good.
• 32:58
Speaker 4: And then you're gonna have to your point the argument, well,
• 33:00
Speaker 4: we should be able to do this because we we
• 33:02
  Speaker 4: have these resources.
• 33:03
  Speaker 2: And then, for.
• 33:04
Speaker 4: Example, if if if everybody that I just mentioned agreed totally,
• 33:09
Speaker 4: then you got the players you gotta deal with, because
• 33:11
Speaker 4: it now they used to getting this, and I can
• 33:13
Speaker 4: see a point where players unionize, and once that happened.
• 33:17
Speaker 2: Is over absolutely, because because my first thought is so
• 33:20
  Speaker 2: I'm a I'm a freshman, I'm coming in, I'm getting
• 33:25
Speaker 2: you know, five hundred thousand dollars, you know, because I'm
• 33:30
Speaker 2: because my future is promising. And lo and behold second semester. Yeah,
• 33:37
Speaker 2: the rule change, the rule changes, and now you capping
• 33:40
Speaker 2: me at one hundred thousand. That's what I'm trying to say.
• 33:44
  Speaker 2: I'm not I'm not interested in There's.
• 33:46
Speaker 4: Gonna be a lot of guys who ain't gonna be
• 33:47
Speaker 4: interested in it. Then you got your boosters. You gotta
• 33:50
Speaker 4: can continue who are a wild card of all.
• 33:52
Speaker 2: This and and I'll make this case. Yeah, you're right,
• 33:55
Speaker 2: this this is this is great for the for the
• 33:58
Speaker 2: for the booster who loves his school, is a whole
• 34:00
Speaker 2: lot of money in his pocket. Yes, he them up.
• 34:04
Speaker 2: Get whoever you want, get whoever you want. And but
• 34:08
  Speaker 2: I I just don't understand, like I just don't understand
• 34:13
Speaker 2: the idea of why why did this, like why did
• 34:19
Speaker 2: we really go there? Why did we end up going
• 34:21
Speaker 2: down this road so deep.
• 34:24
Speaker 4: Again because the NCAA did not make any provisions for players.
• 34:30
Speaker 4: They I think what happened is like the pendulum swung
• 34:33
Speaker 4: the opposite that they were so stringent, so tight with everything.
• 34:38
Speaker 4: Somebody if you buy a player man back in the day,
• 34:40
Speaker 4: somebody buy a player a happy meal, or you're intended
• 34:43
  Speaker 4: the whole programs.
• 34:44
  Speaker 2: You're done.
• 34:45
Speaker 4: We're taking Reggie Bushes all that they went so far right,
• 34:49
Speaker 4: now that we're going way far left. And again, I
• 34:52
Speaker 4: think it can come back to a middle ground, but
• 34:55
Speaker 4: it's gonna take some time, and it's gonna take a
• 34:57
Speaker 4: well thought out process to make sure that that you know,
• 35:00
Speaker 4: once we come back to that middle ground that we
• 35:03
Speaker 4: almost got to almost either, everybody's got to be unhappy
• 35:07
Speaker 4: or everybody's got to be a piece to a certain point.
• 35:10
  Speaker 2: All right, So let's say I'm I'm a suit in
• 35:13
Speaker 2: the room and we're sitting around, we're having a conversation
• 35:16
Speaker 2: about what we think we can do. My first my
• 35:21
Speaker 2: first place is going to be my first comment is
• 35:24
Speaker 2: going to be like, Okay, well, one, you can't have
• 35:28
Speaker 2: players on your team, collegiate players one year, two years
• 35:34
Speaker 2: out of high school making more money than the coaches
• 35:40
Speaker 2: who've been coaching for thirty years, you know, and this
• 35:44
Speaker 2: is their livelihood. They work all day every day trying
• 35:48
Speaker 2: to get the team better. You can't. You can't pay
• 35:52
Speaker 2: players greater than collegiate coaches, can you.
• 35:57
Speaker 4: I mean, I mean that kind of tricky. I mean,
• 36:01
Speaker 4: I see where you're going with that. I mean, that's it,
• 36:03
  Speaker 4: and that's I think that's a fair point. But I
• 36:05
Speaker 4: don't think you. I think the way you phrase stuff
• 36:07
Speaker 4: is important too. I just think I think you do
• 36:09
Speaker 4: what the NFL did and just have caps like you
• 36:12
Speaker 4: Just like I said, you have caps, and I think like,
• 36:15
Speaker 4: if you're coming in, this is what you get, and
• 36:17
Speaker 4: if you hear, this is what you get. And then
• 36:19
Speaker 4: you have caps on movement like man, you don't get
• 36:21
Speaker 4: to transfer five and six times, you get one transfer.
• 36:24
Speaker 4: So say a freshman comes in, he's and and he's
• 36:29
Speaker 4: does every freshman get paid or are we paying just
• 36:32
Speaker 4: the top you? You you have a cap, so this
• 36:35
Speaker 4: is what you can get paid here, or you can
• 36:36
Speaker 4: go zero, just like the NFL. The NFL has a
• 36:40
  Speaker 4: rookie cap.
• 36:40
Speaker 2: So so if I've got so if my cap is
• 36:42
Speaker 2: ten dollars, so I got ten dollars as a cap,
• 36:45
Speaker 2: and I'm coaching ten buck two right, so I got
• 36:49
Speaker 2: ten bucks. So my ten bucks is gonna spread out
• 36:51
Speaker 2: through you manage it however you want so, and I
• 36:55
Speaker 2: gave it all the one guy. Yeah that's and like
• 36:58
Speaker 2: I said, you you got what. I'm not even saying
• 37:00
Speaker 2: that I would just try that.
• 37:01
Speaker 4: I'm just saying, like this, you can't make more than
• 37:03
Speaker 4: this coming in and you're a freshman. You're not signing
• 37:05
Speaker 4: for half a mill or a million dollars. In your
• 37:08
Speaker 4: freshman you get one hundred thousand dollars. And as you
• 37:11
Speaker 4: move up to scale, this is what it is. Number
• 37:13
Speaker 4: one is going. I think it could encourage athletes to
• 37:16
Speaker 4: stay in college longer, which I think nil kind of
• 37:18
Speaker 4: does or maybe does it in some instances. And then
• 37:22
Speaker 4: unless you're not, unless you're sure you're going to be
• 37:24
Speaker 4: productive in the NFL, or you're going to go first,
• 37:27
Speaker 4: you might as well stay there. And again, and what
• 37:29
Speaker 4: we're saying, everybody ain't getting paid like this anyway.
• 37:32
Speaker 2: Like even now we're talking about we're talking about the
• 37:34
Speaker 2: elite to guys, you know what I'm saying. And see,
• 37:37
Speaker 2: I don't like the fact that that let's say the
• 37:40
Speaker 2: roster is one hundred, one hundred kids on the college program.
• 37:50
Speaker 2: I understand that one should not one shouldn't have to
• 37:53
Speaker 2: be let's say a hundred. The guy who's the one
• 37:57
Speaker 2: hundred player on that team cannot make the money that
• 38:00
Speaker 2: the number one guy makes. But it should not be
• 38:06
Speaker 2: that big of a difference. If you recruited me here
• 38:10
Speaker 2: and brought me here to play here.
• 38:12
Speaker 4: And you are what you're worth, man, I mean, you
• 38:14
Speaker 4: can't necessarily say that personal okay.
• 38:15
Speaker 2: So so again, so if we're saying it's okay, so
• 38:18
Speaker 2: it's five hundred dollars for the for the whole roster,
• 38:20
Speaker 2: you got five hundred dollars for the whole roster, and
• 38:24
Speaker 2: you got you got bo Jackson. Okay, he's your running
• 38:29
Speaker 2: back and he's a junior, right he gonna he basically
• 38:34
  Speaker 2: could eat up.
• 38:36
Speaker 4: You know, I guess the model in Wich. I'm saying
• 38:38
Speaker 4: is that number? And I think what And when I
• 38:41
Speaker 4: say cap, I don't mean as cap as though this
• 38:44
Speaker 4: is the total bank that you're working with.
• 38:46
  Speaker 2: See that's what I'm thinking. I'm thinking. I mean, I
• 38:49
Speaker 2: think that you put a cap on it, and.
• 38:51
Speaker 4: You mean can't buy like a classification. So like if
• 38:55
Speaker 4: you're a freshman, you make this, if you're so, and
• 38:58
Speaker 4: again and again i'm this is what you made, This
• 39:02
Speaker 4: is what you made, and again I can go. And
• 39:05
Speaker 4: then you have incentives built into that. So we make
• 39:07
Speaker 4: the playoffs, you get this bump. If you break this
• 39:09
Speaker 4: recor you get this bump, you win the highs and
• 39:11
Speaker 4: win the double War, you get this bumah. So I'm saying,
• 39:14
Speaker 4: I'm saying like that, like you're not We're not. If
• 39:16
  Speaker 4: you're Alabama, Georgia, you're not coming in. You're not you're
• 39:19
Speaker 4: not making peanuts. We're still gonna pay you a good amount,
• 39:21
Speaker 4: but it's like we're not gonna have it. So where
• 39:24
  Speaker 4: it's it's it's it's it's so up and down between
• 39:27
Speaker 4: programs and speaking of suits, So I want to so
• 39:31
Speaker 4: in addition to Marshall, you actually called the Hontington and
• 39:34
Speaker 4: Hurricane game. And I don't know what it was about
• 39:38
Speaker 4: this week, all these gathers like it was just lightning.
• 39:41
Speaker 4: It was a lightning and rain fest all last week
• 39:44
Speaker 4: and these games ended up starting at like nine thirty
• 39:47
Speaker 4: ten o'clock. I mean, in addition to what we seen
• 39:51
Speaker 4: with the West Virginia and we talked Westernion high school sports,
• 39:54
Speaker 4: in addition what we've seen as far as the classification debacle,
• 39:58
Speaker 4: and then these games last week so late. I mean,
• 40:02
Speaker 4: what kind of what was your thoughts on that? I mean,
• 40:05
Speaker 4: do we just hey, we're gonna play tomorrow? I mean,
• 40:08
Speaker 4: do we do we need to start games at ten o'clock?
• 40:12
Speaker 2: We got through about a quarter and some before they
• 40:21
Speaker 2: went off the field, and when they came back, I
• 40:23
Speaker 2: think they had like maybe about six or seven minutes left.
• 40:30
Speaker 2: My first concern was like, because that had never happened.
• 40:35
Speaker 2: I mean I had actually not, you know, we didn't
• 40:37
Speaker 2: have that issue. You know, I never as much rain
• 40:40
Speaker 2: as I played in. I never been in a rain
• 40:45
Speaker 2: or thunder and lightning delay. Yeah, I don't think I'm
• 40:48
Speaker 2: not not to that not that long. I'm not a couple,
• 40:51
Speaker 2: but not that long. I don't even remember at all. Okay,
• 40:54
Speaker 2: So I'm trying to figure out what is going on
• 40:57
Speaker 2: in the locker room, Like how do you you know?
• 41:02
Speaker 2: What do you do? I mean, you know, you hype
• 41:05
Speaker 2: for the game, You get out there, and you get
• 41:07
Speaker 2: a quarter in a little bit of minutes, and then
• 41:10
Speaker 2: now you you you're sitting and you have no idea
• 41:14
Speaker 2: how long it's gonna take. And every time you hear
• 41:17
Speaker 2: thunder you have to assume it's thunder and lightning. So minutes,
• 41:20
Speaker 2: another thirty minutes. I don't know how you come back
• 41:24
Speaker 2: out and be ready to go. I just don't know
• 41:28
Speaker 2: what that does mentally. But I'll say this, both of
• 41:34
Speaker 2: those teams did come out as almost as if they
• 41:38
Speaker 2: had not left the field.
• 41:40
Speaker 4: And I say, in West Virginia High School for butall
• 41:43
Speaker 4: those are elite programs, Yes, those are.
• 41:46
Speaker 2: You would make the case that those are some of
• 41:47
Speaker 2: the top programs, you know, And and and they got
• 41:51
  Speaker 2: to start.
• 41:51
Speaker 4: I'm saying, like GW Capital, I went to South Charleston game,
• 41:56
Speaker 4: they didn't start until like ten, nine thirty ten the clock.
• 42:00
  Speaker 2: That's when they.
• 42:01
Speaker 4: Because it was delays in the beginning, so they started later.
• 42:04
Speaker 4: So I'm just like, at some point, like, why aren't
• 42:07
Speaker 4: we just say, hey, we'll just we'll play this thing tomorrow.
• 42:10
Speaker 4: I don't understand the logic in that.
• 42:13
  Speaker 2: I guess it's it's like if you don't want like
• 42:18
Speaker 2: everybody to go home and come back. But like the
• 42:21
Speaker 2: Marshall game, man, like where it was before the lightning,
• 42:27
Speaker 2: it never got back to that in the stands, those
• 42:29
Speaker 2: folks they were there was not a lot of I mean,
• 42:32
Speaker 2: it was a decent amount that came back, but not
• 42:35
Speaker 2: merely what was there prior to. Yeah, I was.
• 42:38
Speaker 4: I was at GW in South Charles and I tried
• 42:40
Speaker 4: to stay and I left both Yeah I want to
• 42:43
  Speaker 4: wait two hours?
• 42:44
Speaker 2: Yeah, because you because now you're sitting there thinking, one
• 42:47
Speaker 2: you got to go back to your car. Yeah, sitting
• 42:49
Speaker 2: in your car. You're watching it rain, rain, rain, rain.
• 42:52
  Speaker 2: You're almost to a point like, man, I ain't even
• 42:54
Speaker 2: gonna go back in See, I couldn't imagine, you know,
• 42:57
Speaker 2: I couldn't if I'd have gone to my car. Man,
• 42:59
Speaker 2: I'm going home. You know what I'm saying. It was,
• 43:02
  Speaker 2: It was.
• 43:02
Speaker 4: It was a tough opening weekend for high school sports
• 43:04
Speaker 4: around here, for football that is.
• 43:06
Speaker 2: But that was but fortunately the game was you know,
• 43:11
Speaker 2: let me, I'm going back. I'm going to Huntington and
• 43:14
Speaker 2: and and Hurricane game. It was a good game, Yeah,
• 43:20
Speaker 2: it was. It was interesting to me because what what
• 43:25
Speaker 2: what you could tell. What you could tell was, you know,
• 43:29
Speaker 2: Mays was mas is really a good offensive really good
• 43:33
Speaker 2: offensive coach, you know, because but I don't think either
• 43:36
Speaker 2: team had played very good defense early on, and it
• 43:41
Speaker 2: was first week, you know, but so so it was
• 43:47
Speaker 2: just interesting to me to watch those two teams play
• 43:50
Speaker 2: and try to figure out, you know, who's who's coming
• 43:55
Speaker 2: out of there, who's going to be the team that's
• 43:57
Speaker 2: gonna come out of there with with the best mind set,
• 44:00
Speaker 2: you know, because it's because it was close. Game could
• 44:02
Speaker 2: have gone and could have been could have easily gone
• 44:05
Speaker 2: overtime and anybody could have won. So now both teams
• 44:13
Speaker 2: just got to have the conversation and saying to the
• 44:17
Speaker 2: both teams coaches talking to their teams, we're gonna see
• 44:21
Speaker 2: this team again, and we got to do better, you know,
• 44:26
Speaker 2: because you barely want, I mean, you're the block of
• 44:28
Speaker 2: kid to to win the game, you know, and I'll
• 44:32
Speaker 2: say this, you know. One of the things that I
• 44:37
Speaker 2: think if there's anything that, if there's anything negative, if
• 44:40
Speaker 2: you want to call it negative for Maze, is I
• 44:44
Speaker 2: think he's such a focused offensive guy that I'm not
• 44:49
Speaker 2: sure and I can't and I can't prove this or not,
• 44:52
Speaker 2: but it just I'm not sure, Like, you know, everything
• 44:56
Speaker 2: like that should have been you know, that kick should
• 45:00
Speaker 2: have got off to me, you know what I'm saying,
• 45:03
Speaker 2: because man, I'm talking about there was a lot of
• 45:05
Speaker 2: guys through there. H and yeah and that and and
• 45:09
Speaker 2: that ended up hurting bad. Yes, yes, And I just
• 45:13
Speaker 2: think you know, just if if if that if fieldbow
• 45:19
Speaker 2: Block team is better, we'ren overtime and got a chance
• 45:22
Speaker 2: to win. Yeah, it was tough, man.
• 45:24
Speaker 4: I Like I watched the game on the app and
• 45:27
Speaker 4: it's just like Huntington's running attack was because I mean
• 45:32
Speaker 4: they had almost like a thunder and lightning approach with
• 45:34
Speaker 4: Keg and Sacks and Zi Jackson, who was actually the
• 45:37
Speaker 4: Carl Lee winner last year. So like it's gonna be
• 45:41
Speaker 4: it's gonna be interesting to watching them throughout the season.
• 45:43
Speaker 2: Because one and to your point is they're gonna get better,
• 45:48
Speaker 2: you know, and if they If they and again I'll
• 45:51
Speaker 2: say this, any anybody who can run the football, man,
• 45:59
Speaker 2: you got you, you gotta, you got a problem to
• 46:01
Speaker 2: deal with. Because it's easy to tackle. Receiver catches the ball,
• 46:05
Speaker 2: you tackle him. That that's cool, that's easy to do.
• 46:08
Speaker 2: But that dude, that's that's a hard runner. And you
• 46:12
Speaker 2: got to see him down after down after down, and
• 46:15
Speaker 2: he's getting to the secondary. The secondary guys don't want
• 46:18
Speaker 2: to get him. That that can cause some problems and
• 46:23
Speaker 2: clock killing the clock possessions just running the football, running
• 46:28
Speaker 2: the football, chewing the clock up. I think I think
• 46:34
Speaker 2: it's gonna be a tough if Huntington gets even better,
• 46:38
Speaker 2: if they continually get better in the running game, and
• 46:43
Speaker 2: and and to whatever degree they want to throw the ball. Man,
• 46:47
Speaker 2: I think I think they're gonna be tough.
• 46:48
Speaker 4: They got athletes, all are black Eagles.
• 46:52
  Speaker 2: They scored.
• 46:53
Speaker 4: Hey, look we we lost, but we scored nineteen points.
• 46:56
Speaker 4: So that was the most of scoring the game in
• 46:58
Speaker 4: a couple of years. I'd be about that. I scored
• 47:02
  Speaker 4: nineteen Baby.
• 47:03
Speaker 2: I was getting ready, I was getting ready to say
• 47:04
Speaker 2: that you know that that amount of points is is
• 47:09
Speaker 2: is progress? Progress? Sure?
• 47:11
  Speaker 3: Yeah?
• 47:12
  Speaker 2: This is this?
• 47:12
Speaker 4: This was a I mean again, it was a loss,
• 47:14
Speaker 4: but you know it was positive. We got a kid,
• 47:17
Speaker 4: Malcolm Brown. He scored all three of the touchdown. He's
• 47:19
Speaker 4: a kid transferred from Virginia. It's from here. He moved
• 47:22
Speaker 4: to Virginia to move back home. Uh it got him
• 47:25
Speaker 4: a receiver, dB, running back and plays a little bit
• 47:27
Speaker 4: of everything. So he he he definitely showed some promise
• 47:30
Speaker 4: and uh, it was it was. It was fun to
• 47:32
Speaker 4: see the black Eagle was on the board.
• 47:34
Speaker 2: If you if you've got that type of guy number one,
• 47:37
Speaker 2: you gotta keep him. Yeah, you know, I think he's
• 47:39
Speaker 2: the scene. I want to say he's the scene. Okay.
• 47:41
Speaker 2: And the thing about it is you've you've got it
• 47:45
Speaker 2: focused on him. Yeah, you know, you you got it.
• 47:50
Speaker 2: If he's if he can be a receiver, you got
• 47:52
Speaker 2: to get him the ball in space. If he's a
• 47:54
Speaker 2: running back, you gotta get him on the edge. You
• 47:56
Speaker 2: gotta get him some draws and screens, you gotta you
• 47:58
Speaker 2: gotta give him opportunity where he can actually use his talent.
• 48:03
Speaker 4: Because and I think that's what they tried to do.
• 48:05
Speaker 4: Like I said, they had him playing a running back,
• 48:07
Speaker 4: they had him playing a receiver. I think when you
• 48:09
Speaker 4: work with a team like that, who's you know, South
• 48:11
Speaker 4: Charles and is rebuilding that if you have a guy
• 48:14
Speaker 4: who who can make some things happen, you got to
• 48:17
Speaker 4: move him all over, you know, because you don't want
• 48:19
Speaker 4: him to get a double team and people can focus
• 48:22
Speaker 4: on him. Like I said, he even took an interception
• 48:23
Speaker 4: to the house. So it was good to see.
• 48:25
Speaker 2: And it's interesting too because you know, and I'm curious
• 48:28
Speaker 2: about what your response to this is. You know, in
• 48:30
Speaker 2: today's game, you know, people look at that type of
• 48:33
Speaker 2: an athlete all over the field playing different positions. They're like, man,
• 48:38
Speaker 2: they're playing him too many positions. They need to you know,
• 48:41
Speaker 2: he needs to be you know, he needs to go
• 48:43
Speaker 2: somewhere else where he can just be this. I'm going
• 48:46
Speaker 2: to make the case that, man, if you have that
• 48:49
Speaker 2: kind of skill set and you're being able to go
• 48:52
Speaker 2: all over the field, playing different positions and playing them
• 48:56
Speaker 2: at a high level, what's that scout looking at. Yeah,
• 48:59
Speaker 2: I'm to me, I'm like, I'm loving that because scouts,
• 49:05
Speaker 2: you're going to see him in all kinds of different
• 49:07
Speaker 2: situations compared to one position which he might not physically fit. Yeah,
• 49:14
Speaker 2: one just because of size. I mean I would, I
• 49:17
Speaker 2: would kind of agree and disagree.
• 49:19
Speaker 4: I think that again, when you have an athlete like that,
• 49:23
Speaker 4: you're going to naturally move him around because you don't
• 49:25
Speaker 4: want to get targeted, double team, different things in that nature.
• 49:28
Speaker 4: And then when you working on a you know, on
• 49:31
Speaker 4: a team like South charlest and who is rebuilding, you're
• 49:34
Speaker 4: gonna have to because you got to find creative ways
• 49:36
Speaker 4: to get in the ball. Far as scouting in college recruiting,
• 49:39
Speaker 4: I think that again, depending on the type of athlete
• 49:43
Speaker 4: that you are, you may find some benefit to just
• 49:45
Speaker 4: being stable and playing at one position because they can
• 49:48
Speaker 4: kind of assess where you know, where you're good, where
• 49:50
Speaker 4: you're bad, deficiency and everything like that. Although it could
• 49:54
Speaker 4: be beneficial because now they could sort of see where
• 49:57
Speaker 4: they could pitch you, but again that may open up
• 50:01
Speaker 4: situations once you go to the next level where you
• 50:03
Speaker 4: may not be right for that particular system and different
• 50:06
Speaker 4: things of that nature. So it's one of those things
• 50:09
Speaker 4: that again depending on where you at, depending on where
• 50:13
Speaker 4: the program's at, you got to use guys how you
• 50:15
Speaker 4: can use them, and you got to figure out a
• 50:16
  Speaker 4: way to win.
• 50:17
  Speaker 2: And I think I think that's the most important. I
• 50:20
Speaker 2: think that's the most important thing. But hats off to
• 50:25
Speaker 2: him simply because he he's you. Sometimes you have to
• 50:33
Speaker 2: know that you're you're making an impact there. Yeah, you know,
• 50:37
Speaker 2: just in that first game, he already knows that that
• 50:40
Speaker 2: he's he's the lead horse there.
• 50:43
Speaker 4: And I hope we can keep it up because, like
• 50:44
Speaker 4: I said, I think that from watching the game, watching
• 50:47
Speaker 4: the amount of game that I watched, I think that,
• 50:49
Speaker 4: you know, we South Cheulest can win some games this year.
• 50:52
Speaker 2: So is there is there anybody you know that you
• 50:57
Speaker 2: could say looked okay in week one but could be
• 51:03
Speaker 2: somewhere else by week five.
• 51:05
  Speaker 4: I mean, it's it's hard to say. Like I said,
• 51:08
Speaker 4: I mean, you look at the team, like Martin's Bird
• 51:10
Speaker 4: they beat a DC team sixty six and none. Again,
• 51:12
Speaker 4: we don't know how good the DC team is. Hurricane
• 51:15
Speaker 4: South Chele excuse me, Hurricane and the Huntington they both
• 51:17
Speaker 4: look good to me. So I could see them both,
• 51:20
Speaker 4: you know, going deep playoff runs. GW look solid again.
• 51:26
Speaker 4: South Charleston Ripley. Okay, we'll see what they have. So
• 51:28
Speaker 4: it's kind of hard to tell. Nitro look great, but
• 51:31
Speaker 4: you know it's gonna be hard to tell.
• 51:34
Speaker 2: Well, I you know, one of one of the interesting
• 51:39
Speaker 2: components for me is as as you go down, as
• 51:43
Speaker 2: you go down to week two, week six, week seven,
• 51:50
Speaker 2: there's always gonna be somebody's name is gonna jump out
• 51:55
Speaker 2: there that nobody knew that the expectation was not not
• 52:01
Speaker 2: I don't know if I want to say not there,
• 52:03
Speaker 2: but just maybe unexpected of how good that particular player is.
• 52:08
Speaker 2: And I think that's one of the special things about
• 52:13
Speaker 2: football and the development of it and the advancement of it.
• 52:19
  Speaker 2: And and I'll give We've got we've got a little
• 52:23
Speaker 2: kid that's that's on you football that a couple of
• 52:29
Speaker 2: years a couple of years ago. I mean, he would
• 52:32
Speaker 2: he would literally, you know, just sit down on the field,
• 52:36
Speaker 2: wouldn't do anything. We call him Bear, and I've probably
• 52:41
Speaker 2: given him a shout out before, but you should. You
• 52:45
Speaker 2: would if you came to if you came and watch
• 52:47
Speaker 2: one of our practices or want to go come to
• 52:50
Speaker 2: one of the games, and you'd see this little kid
• 52:57
Speaker 2: three foot fours, you know, I mean, a little kid
• 53:02
Speaker 2: and bro like he is legitimately tackling, running like he
• 53:06
Speaker 2: broke a he broke a big run last week and
• 53:12
Speaker 2: it's like just his just in a couple of years,
• 53:16
Speaker 2: just him, his whole football mindset changed. And I use
• 53:24
Speaker 2: that as an example because man, when you start to
• 53:26
Speaker 2: talk about that guy from tenth eleven gets the twelve
• 53:34
Speaker 2: you know, or that that ninth grade, tenth grader that
• 53:40
Speaker 2: nobody's really thinking about, and all of a sudden we
• 53:42
Speaker 2: get in the week five, somebody goes down, he goes
• 53:45
Speaker 2: in and all of a sudden, how many times have
• 53:49
Speaker 2: you said, why wouldn't he playing in the beginning? You
• 53:51
Speaker 2: know what I'm saying, because you didn't see it.
• 53:55
Speaker 4: And I think that becomes even harder to assess when
• 53:57
Speaker 4: we talk about the transfer and the movement of players. Yes,
• 54:00
Speaker 4: because it may take you a while to jail. That's
• 54:03
Speaker 4: all I was saying that like the kick and sas
• 54:04
Speaker 4: kid from Huntington, he was a GW kid and he
• 54:07
Speaker 4: almost had a media impact first game at the like
• 54:10
Speaker 4: the power running back position. So like I said, it's
• 54:13
Speaker 4: it's definitely going to be interesting to see. I think
• 54:15
Speaker 4: by probably week three, week four, who who's who's starting
• 54:20
  Speaker 4: to peak out?
• 54:21
Speaker 2: What would what would mean you as an athlete and
• 54:26
  Speaker 2: you're at you're at g Yeah, what's going to make
• 54:31
  Speaker 2: you trans.
• 54:32
  Speaker 4: I mean, I don't know. I think I mean, maybe
• 54:35
Speaker 4: if there's a coaching change. Maybe if we're going to
• 54:37
Speaker 4: your team, coaching change. Yeah, Like if I'm at GW
• 54:40
Speaker 4: and there was some like coaching change, and it doesn't
• 54:42
Speaker 4: necessarily have to be the head coach, maybe have a
• 54:44
Speaker 4: new offense or defensive coordinators coming in with a different philosophy.
• 54:49
Speaker 4: It may be, you know, I want to win a championship.
• 54:52
Speaker 4: I don't think I can maybe win it there. Or
• 54:55
Speaker 4: maybe it's a situation in which I just want to
• 54:57
Speaker 4: play with the best athletes in the area to see
• 54:59
Speaker 4: where I'm at, you know. So it could be a
• 55:01
Speaker 4: variety of things that would that you know, at a
• 55:04
Speaker 4: high school level that you maybe want to transfer.
• 55:07
  Speaker 2: See, because I haven't really I haven't really found I
• 55:10
Speaker 2: haven't really found one that that sticks for me.
• 55:13
Speaker 4: I mean, I think because to me, it's the nature
• 55:16
Speaker 4: of the position that you played too. I mean, it
• 55:20
Speaker 4: wasn't Again, if you're playing safety a corner, you want
• 55:23
Speaker 4: to have good linebackers in a good d line. It's
• 55:25
Speaker 4: going to help you far as getting pressure on a quarterback.
• 55:27
Speaker 4: You don't have to make all the tackles. But at
• 55:29
Speaker 4: the end of the day, you still out on the
• 55:31
Speaker 4: island by yourself. It's almost like playing like an outfield
• 55:35
  Speaker 4: position in baseball.
• 55:36
Speaker 2: Right, And yeah, and I and I and I and
• 55:38
Speaker 2: I still have some impact on how I play that
• 55:43
Speaker 2: position in spite of in spite of everybody and in
• 55:46
Speaker 2: spite of everybody else. And I thought, and I think,
• 55:48
Speaker 2: once you move closer, it becomes like, man, I gotta
• 55:52
Speaker 2: even even like a receiver on the offensive side, his
• 55:55
Speaker 2: whole stat book, everything that he's going to accomplish is
• 55:58
Speaker 2: is predicated on that court it back and that offensive line,
• 56:02
Speaker 2: and then some degree to that running back. So but
• 56:04
Speaker 2: I think playing a defensive back position, it's just kind
• 56:06
  Speaker 2: of a different world. It's a different mindset. I guess.
• 56:11
Speaker 2: I guess because like I said, man, like I was
• 56:15
Speaker 2: at Marshall when we weren't like there was never a
• 56:17
Speaker 2: season when we were thinking that we were maybe we
• 56:19
Speaker 2: were hoping maybe to get the five hundred my last season.
• 56:22
Speaker 2: But but I got a great example.
• 56:26
Speaker 4: Kid went to Capitol he played, he played defensive back
• 56:30
Speaker 4: his junior year, they go five to five. He makes
• 56:32
Speaker 4: All State. Why because he's got a he's on every
• 56:36
Speaker 4: tackle he making. He got a hundred tackles that year
• 56:38
Speaker 4: at the d back position. The next year they win
• 56:40
Speaker 4: a championship. He literally gets no accolades because he had
• 56:43
Speaker 4: to do nothing because the defensive line and the linebackers
• 56:46
Speaker 4: was so stacked. Ain't nothing coming his way. So it's
• 56:49
Speaker 4: a little different mindset for you. I made a bunch
• 56:52
Speaker 4: of tackles I made.
• 56:53
Speaker 2: I was a safety that Marshall made tackles led the
• 56:57
Speaker 2: team three to four years, and that ain't supposed to
• 57:00
Speaker 2: I ain't supposed to have, you know, and and you know,
• 57:04
Speaker 2: so that does draw some attention, and I get the
• 57:07
Speaker 2: benefit of saying though I was never looked at as
• 57:10
Speaker 2: a safety, as a pro as a pro athlete, as
• 57:13
Speaker 2: a potential pro athlete, I was always looked at as
• 57:16
Speaker 2: a corner. That was kind of when the new the
• 57:19
Speaker 2: new size and length and stuff of corners. But I'm
• 57:22
Speaker 2: gonna get one more shout out here to our sponsor,
• 57:26

• 57:37
Speaker 2: gonna close. I'm gonna close with this and I don't
• 57:40
Speaker 2: I'll give you a chance maybe even to say anything.
• 57:43
  Speaker 2: I I see, I see a Hurricane Huntington game somewhere
• 57:52
  Speaker 2: down the line. I don't I don't know if it's
• 57:56
Speaker 2: even possible that it could be in the championship. If
• 58:00
Speaker 2: it could be, but I feel like I don't know
• 58:02
  Speaker 2: if it's a playoff game, I don't know, championship game.
• 58:05
Speaker 2: But I if I see that game again, I'm not
• 58:09
Speaker 2: sure that it stays that way. I don't know. I
• 58:13
  Speaker 2: don't think it's gonna be I wouldn't. I don't think
• 58:15
Speaker 2: it's gonna be that close. And I'm gonna give the
• 58:17
  Speaker 2: edge to Huntingtons.
• 58:19
Speaker 4: Yes, well, I don't know, man, that's one of those
• 58:22
Speaker 4: I gotta see it, man, because I think it's just
• 58:25
Speaker 4: like I said, just like Honeyson stacked with the athletes,
• 58:27
Speaker 4: so it's Hurricane. They got the Largo's kid. They gotta
• 58:30
Speaker 4: kid the Villa Tommy. So they got a bunch of
• 58:32
Speaker 4: players on that squad that could you know, and that's
• 58:35
Speaker 4: only gonna get better.
• 58:36
Speaker 2: And Bella me, I hadn't seen him really really play.
• 58:41
Speaker 2: He's about that. He can. He can. He's really good,
• 58:46
  Speaker 2: really play. Man.
• 58:47
  Speaker 4: Like I said, I'm maybe I'm biased, but I think
• 58:50
Speaker 4: I don't know. I see quarterback at the next level,
• 58:52
Speaker 4: but that's just me. I don't know he can run
• 58:54
Speaker 4: the ball as well, you know. But that's what you
• 58:55
Speaker 4: said we needed true true. All Right, ladies and gentlemen,
• 58:58
