- 0:20final handful of chapters in this book of kings, this
- 0:25enormous book of kings that has taken us through this phenomenal
- 0:29story of highs and lows. And today we are going to meet a
- 0:33classic duo, you know, you know of Bonnie and Clyde, Who else is
- 0:37there? Thelma and Louise, Laurel and
- 0:40Hardy, Josiah and Hilkia, Josiah and Hilkia, yes, that's the
- 0:46classic duo we're going to hear about today because when they
- 0:49combine their powers, they make amazing things happen.
- 0:52Yes, this, this is going to be the final glory days of the
- 0:58people of Israel before before the end.
- 1:01So settle in as you hear about this wonderful King and his High
- 1:05Priest and how they go about pulling things together back in
- 1:09the right direction as we read together Second Kings chapter
- 1:1322. Josiah was eight years old when
- 1:26he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem 31 years.
- 1:31His mother was Jedidah, the daughter of Adiah from Boscath.
- 1:35He did what was pleasing in the Lord's sight and followed the
- 1:39example of his ancestor David. He did not turn away from doing
- 1:43what was right. In the 18th year of his reign,
- 1:47King Josiah sent Chaffin, son of Azalea and grandson of Mushulam,
- 1:52the court secretary, to the Temple of the Lord.
- 1:55He told him go to Hilkiya, the high priest, and have him count
- 2:00the money the gatekeepers have collected from the people at the
- 2:03Lord's temple. Entrust this money to the man
- 2:06assigned to supervise the restoration of the Lord's
- 2:09temple. Then they can use it to pay
- 2:11workers to repair the temple. They will need to hire
- 2:15carpenters, builders and Masons. Also have them by the timber and
- 2:20the finished stone needed to repair the temple.
- 2:22But don't require the construction supervisors to keep
- 2:25account of the money they receive, for they are honest and
- 2:29trustworthy men. Hilkia, the high priest, said to
- 2:33Shafan, the court secretary. I have found the book of the law
- 2:37in the Lord's temple. Then Hilkia gave the scroll to
- 2:41Shafan and he read it. Chaffan went to the king and
- 2:44reported, Your officials have turned over the money collected
- 2:48at the Temple of the Lord to the workers and supervisors at the
- 2:51temple. Chaffan also told the king,
- 2:55Hilkia, the priest has given me a scroll.
- 2:58So Chaffan read it to the king. When the king heard what was
- 3:01written in the book of the Law, he tore his clothes in despair.
- 3:06Then he gave these orders to Hilkia the priest, a Hikem son
- 3:10of Chaffan Akbar, son of Makaya Chafin, the court secretary and
- 3:16Desire, the King's personal advisor.
- 3:19Go to the temple and speak to the Lord, for me and for the
- 3:23people and for all. Judah, inquire about the words
- 3:26written in this scroll that has been found.
- 3:29For the Lord's great anger is burning against us because our
- 3:33ancestors have not obeyed the words in the scroll.
- 3:37We have not been doing everything it says we must do.
- 3:40So Hilkia, the high priest Ahikum, Akbar, Chafin and Isaiah
- 3:46went to the new quarter of Jerusalem to consult with the
- 3:49prophet Halda. She was the wife of Shalom, son
- 3:53of Tikvah, son of Hahas, the keeper of the temple wardrobe.
- 3:58She said to them, the Lord the God of Israel has spoken.
- 4:03Go back and tell the man who sent you.
- 4:06This is what the Lord says. I am going to bring disaster on
- 4:10the city and its people. All the words written in the
- 4:13scroll that the King of Judah has read will come true.
- 4:17For my people have abandoned me and offered sacrifices to Pagan
- 4:20gods, and I am very angry with them for everything they have
- 4:25done. My anger will burn against this
- 4:28place and it will not be quenched.
- 4:31But go to the King of Judah, who sent you to seek the Lord, and
- 4:35tell him this is what the Lord the God of Israel says
- 4:39concerning the message you have just heard.
- 4:41You were sorry and humbled yourself before the Lord when
- 4:46you heard what I said against the city and its people, that
- 4:49this land would be cursed and become desolate.
- 4:53You tore your clothing in despair, and wept before me in
- 4:56repentance. And I have indeed heard you,
- 5:00says the Lord. So I will not send the promised
- 5:03disaster until after you have died and been buried in peace.
- 5:08You will not see the disaster. I'm going to bring on this city.
- 5:12So they took her message back to the king.
- 5:24Ah, Lord, what a wonderful story of someone being so convicted of
- 5:28what they know to be right that they turn everything in 180° and
- 5:34head firmly in a different direction.
- 5:37Ah, Lord, that we would have that kind of courage that when
- 5:40you convict us of the truth of the right way to go, that all
- 5:45else would be secondary, and that we would just follow You.
- 5:49Lord, give us hearts to just want to please You and live
- 5:53according to your will for our lives, so that when you speak,
- 5:57we listen and when you lead us, we follow.
- 6:02We are your people, we are your children, and we know that we're
- 6:07loved by you so much more than we can ever comprehend.
- 6:11And so we give you our love and we choose You continue to shape
- 6:17us and mould US ever in your service, our wonderful, mighty
- 6:21King and our loving Saviour. And we pray all of this in your
- 6:26name, Jesus, Amen.
