Speaker 3: going to get to some other things in the news.
• 2:21
Speaker 3: And of course, one of the big stories around these
• 2:23
Speaker 3: parts late yesterday afternoon, story broke of the death of
• 2:26
Speaker 3: Tom McGhee, legendary broadcaster, legendary anchor person WCHS Television no
• 2:32
Speaker 3: relation and WWK TV thirteen. We'll get into that, come
• 2:36
Speaker 3: it up a little bit later on as well. And TJ.
• 2:40
Speaker 3: Meadows will join us a little bit later on the
• 2:43
Speaker 3: show to preview talk line, and he's got some breaking
• 2:45
Speaker 3: news and we've talked in the past about the possibility.
• 2:50
Speaker 3: You know, the Republican Party has their gathering this weekend
• 2:53
Speaker 3: in Morgantown, State GOP, and there has been they've made
• 2:57
Speaker 3: a change within the last couple of years where it's
• 3:00
Speaker 3: could not vote in the primary, and they switch that
• 3:03
Speaker 3: around to that so independence can't vote. There's been some
• 3:05
Speaker 3: talk that that may be taken up and that they
• 3:08
Speaker 3: may revert back to that.
• 3:10
  Speaker 4: TJ.
• 3:10
Speaker 3: Meadows is reporting that is apparently not going to happen
• 3:13
Speaker 3: at the State GOP convention this weekend. So we'll talk
• 3:15
Speaker 3: to TJ and to Tom Sussman about that. Let's bring
• 3:18
Speaker 3: it our good friend now, the legendary, semi legendary, almost
• 3:22
Speaker 3: world famous, semi retired JK the DJ.
• 3:25
Speaker 4: What's happening to Dave?
• 3:26
  Speaker 3: How you doing?
• 3:27
  Speaker 6: Man?
• 3:27
  Speaker 4: Hanging in there?
• 3:28
Speaker 3: First time you've been here in our new studio.
• 3:30
Speaker 4: Yeah, it's lovely, very nice.
• 3:31
Speaker 3: Yeah, Yeah, we like it. We like it. That's genuine
• 3:34
Speaker 3: imitation brick. Okay, So don't scoff at it. By retro fests. Yeah, baby,
• 3:39
Speaker 3: it's going on this weekend city Center, Slack Positive, Downtown Charleston.
• 3:43
Speaker 3: How many years you've been doing this?
• 3:44
  Speaker 7: Now?
• 3:44
Speaker 3: This is year four, year four? All right, So tell
• 3:47
Speaker 3: us what retrofest is.
• 3:48
Speaker 4: Well, it's a celebration of old stuff, all right, Me
• 3:51
Speaker 4: and you you know, and we fit right in. We're
• 3:52
Speaker 4: in that demographic and of course retro meets something different
• 3:56
Speaker 4: to just about everybody you talk to, so we can
• 3:58
Speaker 4: kind of broaden the the appeal there as far as
• 4:01
Speaker 4: music goes, and played it just about anybody at any time,
• 4:04
Speaker 4: throughout the course of the day. Got great bands. We've
• 4:07
Speaker 4: got Hair Supply going to be the headliner in the
• 4:10
Speaker 4: evening from eight until.
• 4:11
Speaker 3: About our guys and Hair Supply Greater.
• 4:13
Speaker 4: What oh their spectacular official look the Part, Sound Apart Everything,
• 4:17
Speaker 4: official party band of our sister station ninety eight seven,
• 4:20
Speaker 4: The Mouth and Wild, a wonderful classic rock which almost
• 4:22
Speaker 4: assures you Steve Animal is going to be there somewhere.
• 4:24
Speaker 3: He's their their manager, Slash roady slash, a little bit
• 4:27
Speaker 3: of everything. But I mean, I mean, the guy's in hairsply,
• 4:29
Speaker 3: They've played Regatta, They've played all the big events around here,
• 4:32
Speaker 3: Marty Graw whatever. They're fantastic.
• 4:34
Speaker 4: Yeah, they travel. They get all over the place too, man,
• 4:37
Speaker 4: all over the Eastern Sea wards.
• 4:38
Speaker 3: Yeah, and then they could play even more. It's just
• 4:40
Speaker 3: that they all have full time jobs, which is so
• 4:42
Speaker 3: anti rock and roll. You know, it's so anti rock
• 4:45
Speaker 3: and roll. Guys, Come on, it's two establishment, Yeah, exactly.
• 4:48
Speaker 4: So talk about some of the other groups you got played, well,
• 4:50
Speaker 4: We've got we've got Lee Dean coming in here to
• 4:53
Speaker 4: do his h his Frank Sinatra and his Elvis thing.
• 4:56
Speaker 3: No, Lee very well, former co worker of mine.
• 4:58
Speaker 4: Yeah, right, okay, and Analog We will be there as well.
• 5:01
Speaker 4: Analog Boy, Yeah, yeah, we don't know much about them,
• 5:04
Speaker 4: but if you guys go to our our Retrofest page
• 5:07
Speaker 4: you can learn a lot more about Analog Boy for sure.
• 5:09
Speaker 4: And of course I'll be playing music in between the
• 5:12
Speaker 4: band sets, and we'll have other performers there as well
• 5:16
Speaker 4: as stilt walkers. Who else do we have there? We
• 5:18
Speaker 4: have a Cosmic Wonderling. We have Joey Step, you know, comic.
• 5:23
Speaker 4: He's a lot of fun to hang around with. He'll
• 5:25
Speaker 4: be working the crowd and on stage. So Retrofest starting
• 5:28
Speaker 4: at eleven am until about ten pm on Saturday. And
• 5:31
Speaker 4: this stuff is free, Yeah, absolutely, except for the beer.
• 5:35
Speaker 4: Well you had to pay for the beer, understood. What
• 5:38
Speaker 4: else goes on with I mean other than just the music?
• 5:41
Speaker 3: What else you got?
• 5:42
Speaker 4: Well, like I said, we've got the the aerial list.
• 5:45
Speaker 4: She calls herself Cosmic Wonderland. She puts on the heck
• 5:48
Speaker 4: of a show. She also worked with us on July
• 5:50
Speaker 4: fourth there at Slack Plaza and stilt walkers as well
• 5:54
Speaker 4: as Joey Step comedian. He's a magician and comedian.
• 5:58
Speaker 3: What kind of mender's a guy? I should have praise
• 6:00
Speaker 3: that better. Yeah, no worries, No worries.
• 6:01
Speaker 4: What kind of vendors, Well, we've got a broad selection
• 6:04
Speaker 4: of crafts vendors, also food and beverage, and we might
• 6:09
Speaker 4: even have some classic automobiles here that day.
• 6:11
Speaker 3: Sweet And it's Alt City Center slack Plaza on Saturday.
• 6:16
Speaker 3: And there's no charge, like you said, unless you take
• 6:18
Speaker 3: part in, unless you partake of the food vendors or
• 6:21
Speaker 3: the drink or whatever. Just to come out, listen to
• 6:23
Speaker 3: the music, take in whatever else you get to. It's
• 6:26
Speaker 3: all free of charge.
• 6:26
  Speaker 8: Right.
• 6:26
Speaker 4: Yeah. We have plenty of stuff for the kids to do,
• 6:28
  Speaker 4: so it's a it's a nice, fun family event all
• 6:31
Speaker 4: day long slack Plaza.
• 6:32
Speaker 3: What was it that made you decide to want to
• 6:34
Speaker 3: do this a few years ago?
• 6:35
Speaker 4: Well, I just thought it'd be cool to have a
• 6:38
Speaker 4: little festival of our own. Try to raise some money
• 6:40
Speaker 4: for a good cause. We're trying to raise money for
• 6:43
Speaker 4: scholarships for inner city kids. Okay, yeah, and also try
• 6:46
Speaker 4: to get some money together maybe for music lessons, dance lessons,
• 6:49
Speaker 4: singing lessons and things like that. We're trying to put
• 6:52
Speaker 4: something together with the city. We're still waiting to hear
• 6:54
Speaker 4: back from them about doing something at the rec centers,
• 6:57
Speaker 4: which I was raised on as a kid. I was
• 7:00
Speaker 4: in the Deep East End, spent a lot of time
• 7:02
Speaker 4: at Roosevelt playing basketball, and also Knaw City rec Center. Yeah, yeah,
• 7:07
Speaker 4: also the King Center.
• 7:09
Speaker 9: So here the thing.
• 7:09
Speaker 3: Here's the thing about retro you know, Joe, and I
• 7:12
Speaker 3: think you and I talked about this last year when
• 7:14
Speaker 3: you were on the show, probably the years before that
• 7:15
Speaker 3: as well, is that, as you said at the top,
• 7:18
Speaker 3: it means different things to different people. And I've had
• 7:22
Speaker 3: this discussion a lot with people of various age groups.
• 7:27
Speaker 3: One of my favorite people in the world is my
• 7:28
Speaker 3: next door neighbor who's a little bit older than what
• 7:30
Speaker 3: you and I are, and he's talking about, you know,
• 7:34
Speaker 3: to him classic music, he said, well, it's from the
• 7:36
Speaker 3: nineteen fifties and nineteen sixties. Well, okay, you and I
• 7:39
Speaker 3: are both the kids of the eighties. That's retro to us.
• 7:42
Speaker 3: Here's what people don't want to think about it. And
• 7:44
Speaker 3: I talk about this all the time on the air.
• 7:46
Speaker 3: Truly retro right now in the definition from a marketing standpoint,
• 7:50
Speaker 3: two thousand and four, oh right, two thousand and five,
• 7:53
Speaker 3: Snoop Dog is retro, Yes, yes, Nirvana is ten years
• 7:57
Speaker 3: beyond retro, right, so that early two thousands music. Nobody
• 8:02
Speaker 3: of our age wants to think that that's classic.
• 8:05
  Speaker 10: Now.
• 8:05
Speaker 4: Yeah, we got to work that in for sure. And
• 8:08
  Speaker 4: that's no denying.
• 8:08
Speaker 3: That's what you got to do because you have people,
• 8:10
Speaker 3: I mean, I've been down there when you do this,
• 8:12
Speaker 3: you got people of all ages. You get people from
• 8:13
Speaker 3: their seventies and their eighties, but you also got people,
• 8:16
Speaker 3: you know, you got kids down there as well, so
• 8:17
Speaker 3: you got to kind of please everybody.
• 8:19
  Speaker 11: Yeah.
• 8:19
  Speaker 4: Amen, that's a true story.
• 8:20
Speaker 3: Why why is it that you think things that are
• 8:23
Speaker 3: retro are so popular because it's just people wanting to
• 8:27
Speaker 3: relive their glory days and want to think about the
• 8:29
  Speaker 3: good old days.
• 8:30
Speaker 4: Oh yeah, nostalgia. Man, everybody's got nostalgic memories that bring
• 8:35
Speaker 4: back fond memories from their childhood or even adolescent years,
• 8:40
Speaker 4: even early adult years too.
• 8:42
Speaker 3: So you know, I love to hear people that'll say, well,
• 8:44
Speaker 3: the music of my generation was the best, and we
• 8:46
Speaker 3: all think that. You and I were in the green
• 8:48
Speaker 3: room talking about hair supply and talking about eighties music,
• 8:52
Speaker 3: and here's the thing, even though you know, I was
• 8:53
Speaker 3: a kid that grew up in the seventies and eighties
• 8:55
Speaker 3: got into radio of the late nineteen eighties. Some of
• 8:58
Speaker 3: the eighties music is really crap. But that's okay, it's okay,
• 9:01
Speaker 3: it's just in our mind it's the best music ever.
• 9:04
Speaker 3: And I'm sure that people that are fans of the
• 9:05
Speaker 3: seventies music, sixties music, nineties two that they all say
• 9:08
  Speaker 3: the same thing.
• 9:09
Speaker 4: But it can't all be good. Tim We speak about
• 9:11
Speaker 4: Debbie Gibson for a moment.
• 9:12
Speaker 3: Hey, easy, now, easy, undebt. I was playing that's Debbie
• 9:16
Speaker 3: Gibson stuff when it was new on record. That stuff
• 9:19
Speaker 3: was literally on record on record. Talk about you a
• 9:22
Speaker 3: little bit, JK. You're kind of a legend around these parts.
• 9:25
Speaker 4: Well, I'm famous on my street. Everybody knows me there.
• 9:29
Speaker 3: It's probably because of a warrant or something. But you've
• 9:32
Speaker 3: played just about every bar, festival, every dance in the
• 9:38
Speaker 3: Kanaal Valley for a few years.
• 9:40
  Speaker 2: Now.
• 9:41
  Speaker 4: I do it. I can't, Yeah, I do it. I can't.
• 9:43
Speaker 3: Why do you enjoyed it so much?
• 9:44
  Speaker 8: Man?
• 9:44
Speaker 4: Let me tell you something. I remember retreating into my
• 9:47
Speaker 4: bedroom with a pair of headphones and a little record
• 9:49
Speaker 4: player and just zoning out to the kind of music
• 9:52
Speaker 4: that I was listening to back when I was a child,
• 9:54
Speaker 4: and I was like, man, this is taking me to
• 9:57
Speaker 4: a different location. It was an escape for me to
• 9:59
Speaker 4: listen to music felt great and I was like, man,
• 10:02
Speaker 4: this is easy to get hooked on, you know. So
• 10:04
Speaker 4: and the rest of it, I guess you could say, yeah, exactly.
• 10:07
Speaker 3: Unlike other things, people can get that done, especially people
• 10:09
Speaker 3: to do what we do for a living. So, but
• 10:12
Speaker 3: you also did radio.
• 10:13
Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, on and off for the better part of
• 10:16
Speaker 4: fifteen years at WVS.
• 10:19
Speaker 3: We don't speak of them on me.
• 10:20
  Speaker 4: That's right.
• 10:21
Speaker 3: I'm kidding. I'm kidd kN We're all friends behind the scenes.
• 10:24
Speaker 3: We're just competitors, you know, in the real world. I'm
• 10:26
Speaker 3: kidding about that. And of course we got a mutual
• 10:29
Speaker 3: friend and my big brother and semi agent Burke Allen.
• 10:32
Speaker 3: And yeah, I actually had Burke on the midday show
• 10:34
Speaker 3: yesterday talking about conspiracy theories.
• 10:37
  Speaker 4: Interesting.
• 10:38
Speaker 3: The conspiracy theory with Burke is is how does he
• 10:41
Speaker 3: still have the same wardrobe that he had twenty to
• 10:43
  Speaker 3: thirty years ago.
• 10:45
  Speaker 4: He's a smart guy, he's thrifty.
• 10:48
Speaker 3: Oh yeah, yeah, that's one way to put it. That's
• 10:50
Speaker 3: a nice way to say cheap.
• 10:52
Speaker 4: I welcomed him to the Charleston radio market. We were
• 10:55
Speaker 4: doing an event. I was in sales at that time,
• 10:57
Speaker 4: also on air part time, and were holding a live
• 11:01
Speaker 4: event at where Charleston Blueprint is now. That was the
• 11:05
Speaker 4: Ritz Nightclub. Did you know that?
• 11:07
Speaker 3: Yeah, Okay, I mean I wasn't in in Charleston the time,
• 11:10
Speaker 3: but I'm been unfamiliar with the name.
• 11:11
Speaker 4: Yeah, of course. He stepped in the door, didn't even
• 11:13
Speaker 4: have a chance to talk to him, got right up
• 11:15
Speaker 4: on stage and hosted the Dating Game, which is a
• 11:18
Speaker 4: one o two promotion for that night at the Ritz,
• 11:20
Speaker 4: and he come over and sat with me during the
• 11:22
Speaker 4: breaks and said, Hey, I'm Burke, I'm Joe. And that's
• 11:25
  Speaker 4: when the relationship.
• 11:26
Speaker 3: He'd been doing radio on Huntington at the time for years. Yeah,
• 11:29
Speaker 3: he was in He was in Logan too, Yeah, of course.
• 11:31
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 11:31
Speaker 3: And then he's been I used to be able to
• 11:34
Speaker 3: do his exay was he saw Lake City, Orlando, Vegas.
• 11:40
Speaker 3: He just couldn't keep a job in Northern Virginia. That's
• 11:43
Speaker 3: how he's doing now. He's doing the you know, the
• 11:45
Speaker 3: management thing of manager of Landau and Homer Hickham and
• 11:48
Speaker 3: dreaming clients. What a gig. He does well for himself.
• 11:52
Speaker 3: Where were some of the places that aren't around here
• 11:55
Speaker 3: aren't around here anymore that you used to play? Well
• 11:57
Speaker 3: Tops and Logan? Okay, speaking of Logan, I really loved
• 12:00
Speaker 3: that bar. Good times.
• 12:03
Speaker 4: Let's see your Spanky's on the boulevard downtown where Venos
• 12:06
Speaker 4: is now. That was a good time. There was a
• 12:08
Speaker 4: bar where Jimmy Johns is on the corner of Capitol
• 12:12
Speaker 4: and Virginia Streets. Yeah, it didn't last long. Gosha did
• 12:17
Speaker 4: bar one oh one, which at the time was Cheers
• 12:20
Speaker 4: mul Dunes, which is where the Rock City Cake is now.
• 12:24
Speaker 4: Did you know there was a bar in there? Well
• 12:26
Speaker 4: you Banana Joe's probably at least I also did Banana Joe's.
• 12:29
Speaker 4: Oh my gosh. You'd think i'd have bags under my
• 12:32
Speaker 4: eyes from all that, wouldn't you. And guess what I do?
• 12:35
Speaker 3: And you did that and you're only thirty five years old.
• 12:37
Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, I'm sticking with that.
• 12:39
Speaker 3: Yeah. And you also told me off the air that
• 12:44
Speaker 3: they used to do karaoke at Bennegans.
• 12:46
Speaker 4: Oh yeah, that's correct. Yeah, yeah, oh man, that place
• 12:48
Speaker 4: used to rock too. They did a happy hour thing
• 12:50
Speaker 4: from the beginning of the show all the way through
• 12:52
Speaker 4: the end of the show. Place was packed with college kids.
• 12:54
Speaker 4: We had a great time, had a little dance floor,
• 12:57
Speaker 4: We're always able to fill it up. And there was
• 12:59
Speaker 4: always a line of people. I'm talking thirty five or
• 13:01
Speaker 4: forty people that wanted to sing every show in there,
• 13:04
Speaker 4: and you'd have to wait two hours to get your turn.
• 13:06
Speaker 4: It was a lot of fun.
• 13:07
Speaker 3: Isn't an amazing that the more alcohol you consume, the
• 13:10

• 17:22
Speaker 10: Yeah, he was just a really good anchor. Didn't really
• 17:25
Speaker 10: personally know him, but came to respect him, and I
• 17:28
Speaker 10: always looked forward to the news and did a great job.
• 17:32
Speaker 3: Yeah, he came here from a CNN and he was
• 17:36
Speaker 3: a WCCHS television no relation and also WWK TV later
• 17:40
Speaker 3: went on to become an attorney. And everybody around Charleston.
• 17:43

• 17:47
Speaker 3: since we learned of his passing age seventy eight I
• 17:49
Speaker 3: think it was, and he died in hospice care. Everybody
• 17:53
Speaker 3: around Charleston seems to have a Tom McGee story.
• 17:57
Speaker 10: I don't have one. You know, moved here from Backley
• 18:01
Speaker 10: and just really respected the way that he anchored the news,
• 18:05
Speaker 10: and it was just a quality journalist. And you could
• 18:09
Speaker 10: tell the CNN training was there.
• 18:10
Speaker 3: Oh he I mean, and he just looked the part.
• 18:12
Speaker 3: Oh yeah, I mean did he not? He just he
• 18:14
Speaker 3: just looked the I mean he had that anchorman you know,
• 18:17
Speaker 3: which somebody talked about Ron Burgundy, you know, in that
• 18:20
Speaker 3: whole movie. But I mean, he just that's if you
• 18:23
Speaker 3: looked up, you know, anchor person of the nineteen seventies, eighties,
• 18:27
Speaker 3: and that was Tom. Tom McGee had the look. I
• 18:29
Speaker 3: want to ask you about this. I wanted to get
• 18:32
Speaker 3: into this. TJ. Meadows is putting on Axent on social media.
• 18:36
Speaker 3: Multiple sources say there will not be a push this
• 18:39
Speaker 3: Saturday to reopen the West Virginia Republican primaries boils down,
• 18:43
Speaker 3: according to TJ to parliamentary and procedural issues. Your thoughts
• 18:47
Speaker 3: on that not called BS calling BS on UTJ if
• 18:51
  Speaker 3: you're listening.
• 18:51
Speaker 10: I talked to some folks within the Republican Party probably
• 18:54
Speaker 10: a week ago, and their feeling is that they just
• 18:58
Speaker 10: want Republicans voting on Republicans in the primary, get back
• 19:02
Speaker 10: the way it used to be, kind of the way
• 19:04
Speaker 10: the Democrats were when they were the majority party. There
• 19:06
Speaker 10: are some that believe that there are too many moderates
• 19:09
Speaker 10: in the Republican Party and they want it to become
• 19:12
  Speaker 10: more conservative.
• 19:13
  Speaker 12: And so go.
• 19:14
Speaker 3: Ahead and call it what the people in the party
• 19:16
Speaker 3: call it. They call them rhinos.
• 19:18
Speaker 10: Them I call them Scott's shrinking Republicans. Those are the
• 19:21
Speaker 10: old Republicans. And and so, I mean, each party has
• 19:25
Speaker 10: the right to figure out their destiny and if you
• 19:27
Speaker 10: get the majority of the votes, but I think there's
• 19:29
Speaker 10: a move and a belief that the Republican Party in
• 19:31
Speaker 10: West Virginia is not conservative enough and they want to
• 19:34
Speaker 10: make it more conservative. Okay, I mean you asked me
• 19:38
Speaker 10: what my impression was. I'm not going to OpenD. I
• 19:41
Speaker 10: think there's a risk though when you do that, because
• 19:44
Speaker 10: there are conservatives in West Virginia in terms of economic conservatives,
• 19:47
Speaker 10: they're not social conservatives. And if you do take it
• 19:50
Speaker 10: too far to the right, then then does it come
• 19:54
Speaker 10: to a time when more moderate Democrats can get elected?
• 19:58
Speaker 10: And I think they that is a situation. I think
• 20:01
Speaker 10: a two party system in this state would be great.
• 20:04
Speaker 10: I look, you know, we have some business interests in Ohio,
• 20:08
Speaker 10: and I see where they have competition. The Republicans, you know,
• 20:11
Speaker 10: dominate a lot of it, but there's competition, and I
• 20:14
Speaker 10: think at the end of the day, the product for
• 20:17
Speaker 10: the voters is much better if you have a little
• 20:20
Speaker 10: competition for ideas well.
• 20:23
Speaker 3: And I was talking to somebody the other day, good
• 20:24
Speaker 3: friend of mine, who is a politico if you will,
• 20:27
Speaker 3: in southern West Virginia, and he is he's a registered
• 20:31
Speaker 3: Republican and he is one but former Democrat, as almost
• 20:35
Speaker 3: everyone in southern West Virginia is these days. You know,
• 20:37
Speaker 3: former Democrats. And look, I've told my story before. I
• 20:40
Speaker 3: registered to vote when I was in high school and
• 20:43
Speaker 3: I registered as a Democrat because in Logan County, if
• 20:45
Speaker 3: you weren't a Democrat, you had no one to vote for,
• 20:47
Speaker 3: especially at that time, and everybody was a I mean
• 20:51
Speaker 3: everybody was a Democrat. There were no Republicans. But getting
• 20:54
Speaker 3: back to my friend, I mean, he said he considers
• 20:57
Speaker 3: it to be political suicide for the Republican Party in
• 20:59
Speaker 3: this southern part of West Virginia and that they're going
• 21:01
Speaker 3: to lose a whole lot of votes in the south. Now,
• 21:03
Speaker 3: it could be argued maybe there aren't a lot of
• 21:05
Speaker 3: votes in southern West Virginia one way or the other.
• 21:07
Speaker 10: Your thoughts, well, I think where they run the risk
• 21:10
Speaker 10: is more in the eastern Panhandle because as you see
• 21:12
Speaker 10: more and more folks from Washington, d C. And northern
• 21:16
Speaker 10: Virginia move into the Panhandle and they're making that move
• 21:19
Speaker 10: and in the northern part of Virginia is a moderate
• 21:23
Speaker 10: to liberal area. I think that's more of an issue
• 21:26
Speaker 10: there if you go so far to the right than
• 21:29
Speaker 10: do you alienate it. But that's a balance that that
• 21:32
Speaker 10: party is going to have to make. And I think
• 21:34
Speaker 10: that we need a little bit of we need a
• 21:37
Speaker 10: little bit of competition for ideas well.
• 21:39
Speaker 3: And I liked your point at the beginning of the segment.
• 21:41
Speaker 3: And again we're talking with Tom Sussman. It's their party.
• 21:44
Speaker 3: They can make the rules. Yeah, I mean absolutely have
• 21:46
  Speaker 3: one hunder percent.
• 21:47
  Speaker 4: I don't fall them.
• 21:47
Speaker 10: I mean the Democrats. If you'd ask the Democrats in
• 21:51
Speaker 10: nineteen seventies to an independent vote in the Democratic primary,
• 21:54
Speaker 10: they would have laughed in the faith.
• 21:56
Speaker 3: Well. And but how many independents were there though in
• 21:58
  Speaker 3: the nineteen seventies.
• 21:59
Speaker 10: But they didn't want to take a chance to open
• 22:01
Speaker 10: it up. And when Republicans started talking about open primaries
• 22:04
Speaker 10: before they took control of the legislature, it kind of
• 22:06
Speaker 10: goes so, you know that the Republicans wanted to have
• 22:10
Speaker 10: judicial elections be nonpartisan. Now that they're in the majority,
• 22:14
Speaker 10: of you hear Republicans say, oh, now we need to
• 22:15
Speaker 10: make a partisan you know. So it's it's kind of
• 22:18
Speaker 10: whose goat's getting gord?
• 22:19
Speaker 3: I guess write that downstep, But whose goats getting gord?

Speaker 3: says a move to attempt to reopen the primary will
• 22:40
Speaker 3: fail spectacularly at the GOP meeting on Saturday. The votes
• 22:43
  Speaker 3: simply aren't there.
• 22:44
Speaker 10: That's yeah, and so what do we do. We just
• 22:46
Speaker 10: blame it on parliamentary procedure.
• 22:48
Speaker 3: Yeah, oh, so you think that's what they're They're just
• 22:50
Speaker 3: gonna blame it on there.
• 22:51
Speaker 10: You go say, wow, it's parliamentary procedure. That's the public
• 22:53
Speaker 10: percent of it. I guarantee you if Governor Morrissey and
• 22:57
Speaker 10: the leadership and the Republican Party wanted it open on
• 23:00
Speaker 10: a way to suspend the rules, just like they did
• 23:01
  Speaker 10: at the legislature.
• 23:02
Speaker 3: There are three that we know of, three folks that
• 23:06
Speaker 3: are going to be casting their hat in the in
• 23:09
Speaker 3: the ring for the Republican leadership. When I interviewed all
• 23:12
Speaker 3: three of them on Metro News Midday at one point
• 23:15
Speaker 3: last week so on, and I don't know why. For
• 23:17
Speaker 3: some reason, TJ. Meadows was walking in the studio here.
• 23:20
Speaker 3: Did you know he called BS on what you said?
• 23:24
Speaker 3: I'm going to start a fight, Like now, I'm not
• 23:26
Speaker 3: turning your microphone on. I'm not turning your microphone on.
• 23:29
Speaker 3: I'm kidding. Mister Meadows is here, but he's just doing this.
• 23:32
Speaker 3: This is where he get gets his hair and makeup done.
• 23:35
Speaker 10: That's when you turn to camp. They don't turn to cameras.
• 23:37
  Speaker 4: I knew.
• 23:37
Speaker 10: Is there's something wrong?
• 23:39
Speaker 3: Yeah, yes, yes, yes, yes, all right, But I interviewed
• 23:44
Speaker 3: the three folks that are vying for the chairmanship last week.
• 23:49
Speaker 3: I interviewed him on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Immediately on
• 23:54
Speaker 3: the Saturday that Matt Harridge announced because he's a member
• 23:57
Speaker 3: of the Morrisey administration, he announced that he was not
• 24:00
Speaker 3: he was stepping down. I mean that announcement hit at
• 24:04
Speaker 3: noon on a Saturday afternoon, and within like ten to
• 24:07
Speaker 3: fifteen minutes, Senator Justice had a statement out endorsing Delegate
• 24:11
Speaker 3: Josh Holstein out of Boone County.
• 24:13
Speaker 10: Yeah, that was kind of interesting. I did talk to
• 24:15
Speaker 10: a car party chair the other day in County chair
• 24:19
Speaker 10: and they said they want to move away from elected
• 24:21
Speaker 10: officials as being party chair. So I don't know where
• 24:25
Speaker 10: that goes, and I guess a lot of it's going
• 24:27
Speaker 10: to be what does the governor want and what does
• 24:30
Speaker 10: Senator Justice want and Senator Capito and do they control
• 24:34
  Speaker 10: those votes?
• 24:35
  Speaker 3: And here's what I think, And it's a good point
• 24:36
Speaker 3: that you bring up, Tom, because I think sometimes people
• 24:40
Speaker 3: forget what an influence that the people on top have
• 24:44
Speaker 3: on the state parties, whether it's Republican or Democrat. And
• 24:48
Speaker 3: trust me, a lot of those folks that are going
• 24:50
Speaker 3: to be casting ballots in Morgantown this weekend decided and
• 24:52
Speaker 3: whether it's for a chair or anything else they're deciding on.
• 24:55
Speaker 3: They got Shelley Moore, Capito, they got Jim Justice, they
• 24:58
Speaker 3: got Riley Moore, and they got Carol Miller in the
• 25:00
Speaker 3: back of their mind.
• 25:01
Speaker 10: Well, and they have the governorment the governor too. Yeah,
• 25:05
Speaker 10: you don't want to be a sitting governor and find
• 25:07
Speaker 10: yourself adverse with the state party chair. So how do
• 25:12
Speaker 10: you avoid that? You make sure your person gets to
• 25:15
Speaker 10: be the chair. Well, you know, Jim Justice is talking
• 25:17
Speaker 10: about coming back and running for governor. I keep hearing that.
• 25:19
Speaker 10: I keep hearing that rumor, And so maybe he wants
• 25:22
Speaker 10: his own chair so that then he can control that.
• 25:25
Speaker 3: Is that a legitimate thing though, that we hear that
• 25:27
Speaker 3: Governor Justice is going to come back and run forget.
• 25:29
Speaker 10: We heard that with Joe Manchin. You know, when you're
• 25:31
Speaker 10: a governor, you're one of one. When you go to
• 25:33
  Speaker 10: d C, you're one of one hundred. It's kind of
• 25:35
Speaker 10: frustrating your low man on the totem pole.
• 25:38
  Speaker 3: I don't know.
• 25:39
Speaker 10: Uh, there's definitely, you know, not a great lot of
• 25:42
Speaker 10: love between the current governor and Senator Justice.
• 25:45
  Speaker 3: So, I mean that's pretty evident. I mean, when I've
• 25:47
Speaker 3: been able to do what I've been able to, I
• 25:49
Speaker 3: had heard some some scuttle, if you will, mister Sussman,
• 25:53
Speaker 3: that first lady Denise Morrissey might at one time have
• 25:56
Speaker 3: been interested in running for Republican Party chair. Now I
• 25:59
Speaker 3: don't know, I get that from some pretty reliable sources.
• 26:02
Speaker 3: Understanding that's not a thing. Now, did you hear those
• 26:04
  Speaker 3: some things?
• 26:05
  Speaker 4: No, I didn't.
• 26:05
Speaker 10: But yet in those situations you hear a lot.
• 26:09
Speaker 3: Yeah, well, a lot of a lot of things are
• 26:11
Speaker 3: put out there by the people that are interested, you know,
• 26:13
Speaker 3: straw man, you know kind of stuff. So, going back
• 26:16
Speaker 3: to the Jim Justice situation, I said, with all due
• 26:20
Speaker 3: respect to Senator Justice from the very from the very beginning,
• 26:24
Speaker 3: that it didn't seem to me like he was a
• 26:26
Speaker 3: good fit in DC. And what I mean by that,
• 26:28
Speaker 3: I'm not saying he couldn't do the job or anything
• 26:30
Speaker 3: like that. I'm just saying Jim Justice is literally and
• 26:33
Speaker 3: figuratively a larger than life character, you know, and he
• 26:36
Speaker 3: likes to be the star and there's Look, there's nothing
• 26:40
Speaker 3: wrong with that. A lot of a lot of Republicans
• 26:43
Speaker 3: and Democrats that did great things had that same ego.
• 26:46
Speaker 3: That's fine. And when you go to d C, I mean,
• 26:50
Speaker 3: you know he's just another he's just another guy.
• 26:52
Speaker 10: Well, but Governor Justice, I say, is really good on
• 26:55
Speaker 10: the inner personal discussion, the one on one discussion, meeting
• 26:59
Speaker 10: and working with people. I mean, he had people support
• 27:03
Speaker 10: him and his elections here that you would go, really,
• 27:06
Speaker 10: they're supporting a Republican for governor some of the education
• 27:09
Speaker 10: groups and whatnot. So I think that it's a little
• 27:12
Speaker 10: too early. I would suggest to you that with his
• 27:15
Speaker 10: with his demeanor and the way he works with people
• 27:18
Speaker 10: and gets to know people, let's give him a year
• 27:21
Speaker 10: and see where he comes out. As with any of
• 27:23
Speaker 10: those senators, because a lot of times people get elected
• 27:25
Speaker 10: to a congressional or a legislative branch, and you go,
• 27:28
Speaker 10: I don't see how they're going to survive. And the
• 27:30
Speaker 10: next thing you know, they're pulling the strings.
• 27:32
Speaker 3: What do you make Tom of this battle between the
• 27:37
Speaker 3: Morris administration and the State school Board? We go to court,
• 27:41
Speaker 3: I mean we know that well.
• 27:42
Speaker 10: I think the State school Board looks at the legislation
• 27:45
Speaker 10: that's there and they say, this is the rules. We
• 27:48
Speaker 10: got to follow the rules. Executive orders are nice, but
• 27:52
Speaker 10: they're not the law, and so I think you have
• 27:55
Speaker 10: to follow the law. I think what the Secretary of
• 27:57
Speaker 10: State did, which I thought was smart by not accepting
• 28:00
Speaker 10: those rules, will then facilitate a quick hearing on does
• 28:07
Speaker 10: the legislature then have the power to to to rule
• 28:11
Speaker 10: on on the rules? In terms of the vaccines, I
• 28:14
Speaker 10: think it's pretty clear. I think that that law that's
• 28:18
Speaker 10: out there right now that requires mandatory school aid vaccines stands.
• 28:23
Speaker 3: Why do you think Morsey Governor Morsey Tom is so
• 28:26
  Speaker 3: adamant about this?
• 28:27
  Speaker 4: Is it?
• 28:28
Speaker 3: Is it about the vaccines or is it about the
• 28:31
Speaker 3: principles behind it? I mean, it could be any other topic.
• 28:34
Speaker 3: It's just that he wants to be the one in charge.
• 28:36
Speaker 10: I don't know, there's his base for the large part
• 28:41
Speaker 10: is anti vaccine, and I think that he's carrying that message,
• 28:46
Speaker 10: although my personal feeling is it's a it's an anti
• 28:49
Speaker 10: health message. It's not make America healthy again, it's make
• 28:53
Speaker 10: West Virginia sicker again if you do away with school
• 28:56
Speaker 10: age vaccines, which I'm sure that'll get your texting going
• 29:00
  Speaker 10: from Mike Stewart.
• 29:03
Speaker 3: Pick it on the guy.
• 29:04
Speaker 10: He's not even here, man, Well, I guarantee you maybe
• 29:06
Speaker 10: he's listening. Yeah, possible, but but no, I mean so,
• 29:10
Speaker 10: I think that's where that is the whole question. You know,
• 29:13
Speaker 10: the legislature and the governor have a real hard time
• 29:15
Speaker 10: with the fact that the constitution sets forth that the
• 29:19
Speaker 10: state school board is a separate constitutional arm of government
• 29:23
Speaker 10: in West Virginia to protect education. Yeah, in the old
• 29:26
Speaker 10: day's education was very political, and I think people wanted
• 29:29
Speaker 10: to take it away from the politics. And the voters
• 29:33
Speaker 10: have spoken twice on that, so I think that, but
• 29:37
Speaker 10: they still they want to have control.
• 29:40
Speaker 3: Tom Susman, It's always a pleasure to have you on
• 29:41
Speaker 3: a showdown. I also wanted to ask you because I
• 29:44
Speaker 3: know you're very involved in things, believe it or not,
• 29:47
Speaker 3: outside politics, and we had you scheduled to be on
• 29:52
Speaker 3: the midday show yesterday, but we had some breaking news
• 29:53
Speaker 3: out of Clarksburg with a water main breake, and so
• 29:56
Speaker 3: we had to we had you got bumped for a
• 29:58
Speaker 3: fire hydrant. Sorry about that, but we had to do.
• 30:00
Speaker 3: What you understand, But you're very involved with the Jackson
• 30:02

• 30:04
Speaker 3: kicking off. And get you a little plug in for
• 30:05

• 30:06
Speaker 10: Yeah, the fair is going on right now. It's at Cottageville.

• 30:17
Speaker 10: Yeah, it's one of the largest market sales in the
• 30:20

• 30:24

• 30:30
Speaker 10: mud bogs, really good food, I mean, just everything that
• 30:34
Speaker 10: you'd want in the county fairs going on now.
• 30:36
Speaker 3: It's a fair season and if you're looking for something
• 30:38
Speaker 3: to do here here in the Charleston area, it's not

• 30:40
Speaker 10: Cottageville to No. It's pretty good, it really is. It's
• 30:44
Speaker 10: a lot easier than getting to the State Fair. Not
• 30:46
Speaker 10: quite as big as the State Fair, but more fun.
• 30:49
Speaker 3: All right, Tom Sussman, It's always a pleasure to have

• 34:38
Speaker 3: on the outside looking in, which is pretty much the
• 34:40
Speaker 3: case right now. Anyway. I'm not involved in Republican party
• 34:43
Speaker 3: politics anymore, so I don't know Texan why the Republicans
• 34:47
Speaker 3: who have historically professed their loyalty and adherence to the

• 35:01
Speaker 3: chief of staff for mayor. A good one. How are
• 35:02
  Speaker 3: you doing, buddy?
• 35:03
  Speaker 11: Doing good pal.
• 35:04
  Speaker 14: It's it's been a crazy a couple of weeks. Last
• 35:06
Speaker 14: week was Charleston Public Courts tennis tournament. So it's always
• 35:10
Speaker 14: a good community event and a great reminder to me
• 35:12
Speaker 14: that I'm not thirty years old anymore. So they say, yeah,
• 35:16
Speaker 14: I get off the court at eleven o'clock at night
• 35:17
Speaker 14: and they're like, okay, you won. You get to play
• 35:19
Speaker 14: the next match at eight o'clock in the morning. And
• 35:20
Speaker 14: I'm like, yeah, sure, and my body's like, nah, man,
• 35:22
Speaker 14: that's not gonna work.
• 35:23
Speaker 3: It's like you're like eight o'clock in the morning, like
• 35:25
Speaker 3: this year, eight o'clock in the morning.
• 35:27
  Speaker 7: Like.
• 35:28
Speaker 14: So now it's always it's always a fun event at
• 35:30
Speaker 14: West Virginia State runs it. My good friends Andrea cutting
• 35:33
Speaker 14: Him and Sydney Prince put on a great tournament. So
• 35:34
Speaker 14: you know that it's a couple hundred people, a lot
• 35:37
Speaker 14: of hip folks from actually come down from Kentucky, and
• 35:39
Speaker 14: come over from Ohio. We had a couple and it's
• 35:42
Speaker 14: getting younger, which is great too. So it's a good
• 35:44
Speaker 14: community event that paired with TBT. We got Multifest coming up.
• 35:47
Speaker 14: It's just you know, summer in Charleston doesn't stop now.
• 35:49
Speaker 3: So let's let's talk about TVT We got the championship
• 35:52
Speaker 3: in the West Virginia Regional tonight. It'll be Best Virginia
• 35:56
Speaker 3: in that event and they're playing for the championship night
• 35:59
Speaker 3: seven o'clock to see him Convention Center.
• 36:01
  Speaker 11: Yeah, it's exciting.
• 36:01
Speaker 14: I mean I think you know when we when we
• 36:03
Speaker 14: get the TBT in town and we get the drawers,
• 36:06
Speaker 14: and we always look for that, you know, WVU Marshall game. Right,
• 36:09
Speaker 14: that's what we that's what we aim for and hope
• 36:11
Speaker 14: that we can get because that's when we have our
• 36:14
Speaker 14: biggest crowd. I mean, you know, no matter what team
• 36:16
Speaker 14: you cheer for, or even if you're just a basketball fan,
• 36:18
Speaker 14: it's really enjoyable to watch. So not only do we
• 36:20
Speaker 14: get that, but then we also get one of them
• 36:22
Speaker 14: in the finals. It works out just absolutely perfect. So
• 36:25
Speaker 14: best of luck to Best Virginia tonight. I will say
• 36:27
Speaker 14: that there was a thing on Facebook John Flowers or Twitter,
• 36:31
Speaker 14: I guess posted something about the mayor cheering for heard
• 36:35
Speaker 14: that she was wearing a different colored shirt. He said
• 36:37
Speaker 14: she was wearing green, but she wasn't. She was wearing AWWA.
• 36:40
Speaker 14: She was cheering for both teams.
• 36:41
Speaker 3: But wanted she got a kid at Marshall and a
• 36:45
  Speaker 3: kid at WV.
• 36:46
Speaker 14: Yeah, I think that that John decided that be a
• 36:48
Speaker 14: good way for him to get some likes, so he
• 36:49
Speaker 14: decided to point out the mayor. But she's got a
• 36:51
Speaker 14: kid in both schools and has always read it for
• 36:53
Speaker 14: both schools, so it's always weird. She was there as
• 36:55
Speaker 14: a neutral party cheering on the event. But it's always
• 36:58
Speaker 14: it's all in good fun. And we know what John
• 37:00
Speaker 14: all on good fun. He came out to regatta and
• 37:02
Speaker 14: him and Kevin Jones and John Elmore got to come
• 37:03
Speaker 14: out and get the crowd ready during the regatta for TBT,
• 37:07
Speaker 14: So it's always always.
• 37:08
Speaker 11: Fun that way, and it's just a it really is
• 37:10
  Speaker 11: a fun event.
• 37:12
Speaker 14: And to be able to announce the WVU Wick Forest
• 37:14
Speaker 14: Game coming in December right before TVT kicked off was
• 37:16
Speaker 14: actually another huge, a huge announcement for the cv B
• 37:19
Speaker 14: in the coliseum, So h It really is having those
• 37:22
Speaker 14: relationships with those schools. You know, we have the game
• 37:24
Speaker 14: over at Gomar Park, which is always awesome, and of
• 37:27
Speaker 14: course we haven't had a WVU Marshall basketball game in
• 37:29
Speaker 14: a long time, but I know that you know we're
• 37:30
Speaker 14: ready to host when they're ready to play.
• 37:32
Speaker 3: So it's are you listening?
• 37:34
  Speaker 4: Yeah?
• 37:34
Speaker 3: Are you listening? Well, I'm gonna leave, Yeah, I'm gonna
• 37:37
Speaker 3: leave my thoughts on that alone. You can, honestly though,
• 37:41
Speaker 3: you can support both schools. People have a tendency to
• 37:43
Speaker 3: forget that. I mean, I'm a Marshall should but I mean,
• 37:47
Speaker 3: other than when they play WVU, I'm all about WVU.
• 37:50
Speaker 3: You can actually do both. But Dave Allen Schilling five
• 37:52
Speaker 3: Any Live is brought to you part by Morgan Morgan.
• 37:54
Speaker 3: If you're injured, hired Morgan to Morgan, America's largest injury
• 37:57
Speaker 3: law firm. All right, so TBT snide, but I get
• 37:59
Speaker 3: some other stuff I want to talk to you about.
• 38:01
Speaker 3: There was a story in the papers when we lead
• 38:03
Speaker 3: story as matter of fact in the local gazette mail
• 38:07
Speaker 3: about water leaks and mold hitting the YWCA, And of
• 38:11
Speaker 3: course we're talking about the exact name is the Sojourners
• 38:13
Speaker 3: shelter for homeless women and families. What's going on here, man.
• 38:17
Speaker 14: Yeah, So the Sojourner Shelter that YWCA runs, first of all,
• 38:21
Speaker 14: is the one of we have a lot of important programs,
• 38:24
Speaker 14: but this is one of the most important programs we
• 38:25
Speaker 14: have in our city. It helps domestic exposed women in
• 38:29
Speaker 14: domestic abuse situations and as our women's homeless shelter, So
• 38:33
Speaker 14: it is an extremely important program in our city. And
• 38:37
Speaker 14: it is inside a city building, So the city owns
• 38:39
Speaker 14: the building that Sojourners is in. And you know, just
• 38:42
Speaker 14: like every other building, it gets old. We've you know,
• 38:44
Speaker 14: we've got a roof we've got to repair. There was
• 38:46
Speaker 14: some long standing issues in a shower that we weren't
• 38:48
Speaker 14: made aware of that ended up. You know, we all
• 38:50
Speaker 14: have that issue with a shower or plumbing. If you
• 38:52
Speaker 14: don't take care of it when it first starts, it's
• 38:53
Speaker 14: going to become something a whole lot bigger.
• 38:55
Speaker 11: So it became a bigger issue.
• 38:57
Speaker 14: But working with contract is to get those problems fixed
• 39:01
Speaker 14: and working with the YWCA, I will say, you know,
• 39:03
Speaker 14: the YWCA is in our new leadership, and there was
• 39:05
Speaker 14: a little bit of a gap between you know, you
• 39:08
Speaker 14: know Dev Weinstein ran the wife for years and you
• 39:10
Speaker 14: know between that and the new leader and Sonia, you know,
• 39:14
Speaker 14: there was some not communication going on and things that
• 39:16
Speaker 14: that kind of went under which which happens, right, I mean,
• 39:18
Speaker 14: it happens, and some things that go and we all
• 39:21
Speaker 14: know that any issue that deals with water, as we're
• 39:23
Speaker 14: all dealing with this summer is springing this summer. Any
• 39:25
Speaker 14: issue deals with water, if it's not addressed immediately, will
• 39:27
Speaker 14: become a problem that you've got to deal with. So
• 39:29
Speaker 14: we're working with them really closely to deal with that
• 39:31
Speaker 14: problem right now, you know, I don't you know, we
• 39:35
Speaker 14: have a lot of great contractors, and shout out to
• 39:36
Speaker 14: all of them who are willing to come out and
• 39:38
Speaker 14: help us on the fly.
• 39:39
Speaker 11: But fixing the shower problems and then we've got.
• 39:41
Speaker 14: The roof, which I believe the bids do today, and
• 39:43
Speaker 14: then if we get good bidders, well we'll get in
• 39:45
Speaker 14: front of city council. But working with them really hard
• 39:47
Speaker 14: to make sure that that that place gets, you know,
• 39:49
Speaker 14: the upgrades that it needs, and then that they get
• 39:52
Speaker 14: their general maintenance plan put together because really with anything else,
• 39:55
Speaker 14: you know, just just a little bit of oversight and
• 39:57
Speaker 14: you can avoid major problems, because we do want folks
• 40:00
Speaker 14: in there not only to be comfortable, to be safe
• 40:03
Speaker 14: and to you know, in one of the worst times
• 40:05
Speaker 14: their lives, to have a place that they can rely
• 40:07
Speaker 14: on and be in and and the why does an
• 40:08
Speaker 14: amazing job run the program. And it's got a few
• 40:10
Speaker 14: issues we got to fix in the building and make
• 40:12
Speaker 14: sure that we can keep people safe and comfortable while
• 40:14
Speaker 14: they're helping to get back on their feet.
• 40:16
Speaker 3: And they do a fantastic job there, all amazing as
• 40:19
Speaker 3: you said, at that time, when people are in there,
• 40:22
Speaker 3: they ain't exactly at their as you said, their best
• 40:24
Speaker 3: point in their life.
• 40:25
Speaker 14: Yeah, I mean, I think it's it is something that
• 40:26
Speaker 14: our care team relies upon, it's something that the Trust
• 40:29
Speaker 14: and Police department allies upon.
• 40:31
Speaker 11: They are a first phone call in a lot of situations.
• 40:33
Speaker 14: And their staff have an amazing staff of social workers
• 40:36
Speaker 14: and professionals who help who help women in need, and
• 40:40
Speaker 14: you know, it is one of those things that is
• 40:42
Speaker 14: a critical program in our city. And you know, just
• 40:44
Speaker 14: working with them to clean up some long standing problems
• 40:46
Speaker 14: and make sure we can get back everybody back to
• 40:49
Speaker 14: where they need to be. And I think it's worked
• 40:50
Speaker 14: out really well. We've got a good communication plan that's
• 40:53
Speaker 14: been put in place, and we've got a good maintenance
• 40:55
Speaker 14: plan for that building and for other buildings they have
• 40:58
Speaker 14: that's been put in place. And feel good about moving forward,
• 41:01
Speaker 14: just fixing some problems.

  Speaker 3: we let you go. I know, I know you're a
• 41:17
Speaker 3: Charleston guy, And of course this has been kind of
• 41:19
Speaker 3: dominating the new cycle over the last you know, twelve
• 41:22
Speaker 3: to twenty hours or so. That was the death of
• 41:24
Speaker 3: Tom McGee, you know, longtime anchor person WC. It just television,
• 41:27
Speaker 3: no relation and WWK later went on to become an attorney.
• 41:32
Speaker 3: You being a Charleston guy, I mean you knew Toma Gee?
• 41:36
Speaker 14: Well yeah, I mean you everybody all grew up watching Tom,
• 41:38
Speaker 14: and I grew up watching Tom and then I was
• 41:40
Speaker 14: lucky enough as when I got in my professional career
• 41:42
Speaker 14: to get to work with him Motor announced. I think
• 41:45
  Speaker 14: it was winning What's going to c W Let's Seeah,
• 41:47
Speaker 14: So I got to work with him when he was
• 41:49
Speaker 14: doing that, and you know, just a genuinely nice guy.
• 41:52
Speaker 14: And it's always it's always. You know, people meet you,
• 41:55
Speaker 14: Dave and your personality on the radio, and you're in
• 41:57
Speaker 14: a personality in person, you tend to be the same
• 41:59
Speaker 14: person for people don't know you out there, and Tom
• 42:01
Speaker 14: was the exact same way like some folks. Some folks
• 42:03
Speaker 14: are one way on TV in another way in person.
• 42:05
Speaker 14: Tom was just jovial, nice and always willing to crack
• 42:09
Speaker 14: a joke. And you know, I think it was our
• 42:11
Speaker 14: buddy Tony parents, you know that referred to him as
• 42:13
Speaker 14: the original Ron Burgundy.
• 42:14
Speaker 11: And I think that was kind of right. I mean,
• 42:15
Speaker 11: that was that was Tom.
• 42:16
Speaker 14: He was larger than life, and he was large and
• 42:18
Speaker 14: as a kid, when you got to meet him or
• 42:20
Speaker 14: see him, you really felt like you were meeting a celebrity.
• 42:22
Speaker 11: Because you were because he was he was. He was
• 42:24
  Speaker 11: our guy.
• 42:25
Speaker 14: And and uh, it was sad, sad of his passing,
• 42:29
Speaker 14: but you know, especially time like this where now everybody
• 42:32
Speaker 14: gets to relive all of those memories and all those stories.
• 42:34
  Speaker 14: It's it's it's fun to it's fun to hear everybody
• 42:36
Speaker 14: talk about how great Tom was.
• 42:38
Speaker 3: I had a texture. So the first memory I have
• 42:40
Speaker 3: of Tom McGee who six out when he was dressed
• 42:42
Speaker 3: as Santa and arrived at the Town Center. It came
• 42:44
Speaker 3: down the escalator at Center Court that was pre Starbucks,
• 42:48
Speaker 3: and he let us sing along of Alabama's Angels among
• 42:50
Speaker 3: Us or pray God be with his family Rest in peace.
• 42:52
  Speaker 13: Tom.
• 42:53
Speaker 11: Yeah, I could tell you know. We I grew up
• 42:54
  Speaker 11: in St.
• 42:55
Speaker 14: Anthony's Church over on the West Side and huge fish
• 42:57
Speaker 14: dinners every Friday night during Lent, and you know we
• 43:00
Speaker 14: have politicians would come through, and people would come through
• 43:02
Speaker 14: and everybody just kind of sit there and introduce them.
• 43:04
Speaker 14: When Tom walked through the door, everybody stood up want
• 43:06
Speaker 14: to meet him, like it was just one of those
• 43:07
Speaker 14: guys where I can always remember that like you could
• 43:09
Speaker 14: you could a State Center could walk in and people
• 43:12
Speaker 14: would kind of go, oh, look who that is. When
• 43:13
Speaker 14: Tom walked in, everybody stood up to go meet him
• 43:16
Speaker 14: because he was just larger than life and he was
• 43:18
Speaker 14: a great, a great West Virginia and great Charlestonian.
• 43:21
Speaker 11: So he will definitely be missed. But it is fun
• 43:24
Speaker 11: listening to people tell the stories.
• 43:25
Speaker 3: Well, and I think too, We'll say this. I'll let
• 43:27
Speaker 3: you go. I think too. You got to understand the
• 43:30
Speaker 3: time frame. I mean, I grew up in a time
• 43:33
Speaker 3: in the seventies and eighties. We you know, we didn't
• 43:36
Speaker 3: get cable television until like I was in junior high.
• 43:40
Speaker 3: You know, back it was called junior High. That should
• 43:42
Speaker 3: tell you something, right there. So we had primarily three
• 43:44
Speaker 3: eight thirteen, you know, a couple of other TVs, couple
• 43:47
Speaker 3: of little channels here and there, and so the people
• 43:49
Speaker 3: that you saw on TV, the Tom McGee's or the others,
• 43:52
Speaker 3: that's that was that was the news because you didn't
• 43:55
Speaker 3: have all of these different outlets everybody and people didn't
• 43:57
Speaker 3: have X, they didn't have YouTube TV or whatever, and
• 44:00
Speaker 3: you got your local channels and that's where you got
• 44:02
Speaker 3: your news. And whether it was a Tom McGee or
• 44:04
Speaker 3: Tony Cavalier. Bob Brunner is another one. Mister Brunner is
• 44:07
Speaker 3: always going to be on the show tomorrow. I had
• 44:09
Speaker 3: already scheduled to have Bob Brunner come on the show tomorrow.
• 44:11
Speaker 3: Just that was the news and when you met those people.
• 44:14
Speaker 3: I mean it was like you said, it's like meeting
• 44:16
Speaker 3: somebody larger than life. And Tom McGee was one of
• 44:18
  Speaker 3: those people.
• 44:19
Speaker 14: Yeah, and he just carried himself that way too. And
• 44:20
Speaker 14: I mean I think it was to your point. You know,
• 44:21
Speaker 14: we didn't have CNN anchors or Fox News anchors. We
• 44:23
Speaker 14: didn't have those people in our lives. We had our
• 44:25
Speaker 14: local news anchors and they were the most trusted source
• 44:27
Speaker 14: we had. But Tom not only was a trusted source,
• 44:30
Speaker 14: but he was also just a great person and somebody
• 44:32
Speaker 14: who was pleasant, pleasant and fun to be around.
• 44:34
Speaker 3: So Matt Sutton, I appreciate you being here, BAMSA, thanks

  Speaker 11: Agreed.
• 48:43
Speaker 3: There's been a lot of the news really over the
• 48:44
Speaker 3: last couple of years about the Dunbar Police Department. Aaron
• 48:48
Speaker 3: Parker has got a story post at wv metronews dot com.
• 48:51
Speaker 3: Police chief in Dunbar, John Garton says the officer that
• 48:54
Speaker 3: had been named in multiple lawsuits has handed in his resignation.
• 48:58
Speaker 3: Officer Zachary Winners served with the department for five years,
• 49:01
Speaker 3: and in that time he was named in two lawsuits,
• 49:05
Speaker 3: one of which ended with the death of a suspect
• 49:08
Speaker 3: and combined with two lawsuits, cost the city around two
• 49:11
Speaker 3: and a half million dollars, according to aaronstorywv Metronews dot com. Now,
• 49:16
Speaker 3: there's been a video circulating around social media of a
• 49:20
Speaker 3: police cruiser crashing in Raleigh County and reportedly Officer Winners
• 49:25
Speaker 3: was at the wheel. Anyway, Officer Winners has resided and
• 49:30
Speaker 3: this police situation over all in Dunbar, at least in
• 49:33
Speaker 3: the service, has been a mess. Hopefully they'll be able
• 49:35
Speaker 3: to get that straightened out for the people of Dunbar.
• 49:37
Speaker 3: Coming up later today Metro News Midday powered by Selango Law.
• 49:41
Speaker 3: On the show today, we're going to continue to talk
• 49:42
Speaker 3: about menus in the schools this fall and how the
• 49:44
Speaker 3: school systems are adapting to the changes and acted by
• 49:47
Speaker 3: the legislature. We'll get into that story. We'll continue to
• 49:50
Speaker 3: talk about the passing of Tom McGee. Mark Martin, legendary
• 49:53
Speaker 3: sports broadcaster who worked alongside Tom, was going to join us.
• 49:56
Speaker 3: It's Metro News Midday with thirteen News in Tonight, Life
• 49:58
Speaker 3: Anchor Amanda Baron and Me coming up in today, brought
• 50:00
Speaker 3: to you by a Selango Law. As I mentioned earlier
• 50:03
Speaker 3: speaking of legendary broadcasters, he always fascinating. Bob Brunner is
• 50:06
Speaker 3: going to join me on the show tomorrow as his delegate,
• 50:09
Speaker 3: Dan of Ferrell. That is coming up on tomorrow's show.
• 50:15
Speaker 3: What is the update on the Epstein files, Well, there
• 50:17
Speaker 3: is no update. That's the update. Sorry, there is no update.
• 50:22
Speaker 3: One other thing about Tom mcgainn. I'll bring TJ. Meadows
• 50:25
Speaker 3: in here. I did not know Tom McGee personally. Our
• 50:29
Speaker 3: paths never crossed, although I certainly was aware of his
• 50:32
Speaker 3: work at WCCHS Television no relation and WWK. Of course,
• 50:37
Speaker 3: he later went on to become an attorney and he
• 50:40
Speaker 3: died at the age of seventy eight in hospice care.
• 50:42
Speaker 3: He was He was quite the character from what I've
• 50:46
Speaker 3: been told, and his demons, of course were well known.
• 50:50
Speaker 3: But he just looked the part, as we said earlier,
• 50:53
Speaker 3: of a polished, big city anchor person. And he just
• 50:57
Speaker 3: looked as I said earlier, I think if you looked up,
• 51:00
Speaker 3: you know television anchor person, especially at that time, you're
• 51:03
Speaker 3: gonna see Tom McGee's picture. Absolutely, he came here from
• 51:07
Speaker 3: CNN and he'd worked at various places in Birmingham. I
• 51:10
Speaker 3: think it was one of the places he worked. So
• 51:12
Speaker 3: it's certainly a loss for the broadcasting community here in
• 51:15
  Speaker 3: West Virginia.
• 51:15
  Speaker 5: TJ.
• 51:16
Speaker 3: Meadows is here and you and I were talking. Some
• 51:19
Speaker 3: of our conversation were on there. Someone was off the
• 51:21
Speaker 3: air with Matt Sutton about growing up and seeing Tom
• 51:24
Speaker 3: McGee on television. I mean, that was just that was
• 51:27
Speaker 3: like the standard man. He and Bob Brunner is going
• 51:30
Speaker 3: to be on the show tomorrow. I'm more of a
• 51:31
Speaker 3: Brunner guy because it's more of my generation. I'm a
• 51:34
Speaker 3: little bit older than you are. But that's that was
• 51:38
Speaker 3: the news to us as a child of the eighties.
• 51:41
Speaker 3: Six o'clock it was Tom McGee, Mary Seu Jackson are
• 51:44
Speaker 3: very own Dave weekly on sports. I mean, that was
• 51:47
Speaker 3: the staple in the Greater Kanawa Valley southern West Virginia
• 51:50
Speaker 3: for the most part, that's who you watched. And he
• 51:54
Speaker 3: was a household name. Everyone knew Tom. And it was
• 51:56
Speaker 3: an era where we didn't have all of these other outlooks.
• 52:00
Speaker 3: We didn't have social media, the Internet was not there yet,
• 52:03
Speaker 3: and that was a fixation for local television. Everybody knew
• 52:08
Speaker 3: the guy. And you see, you see Tom mcghe it's
• 52:11
Speaker 3: Tom McGee, you know, you know what I mean, it's
• 52:13
Speaker 3: a big deal. He was and I don't mean this
• 52:15
Speaker 3: pejority of it. He was our Ron Burgundy. I don't
• 52:18
Speaker 3: want to throw another name out there too, and that's
• 52:19
Speaker 3: Bob Smith. Bob Smith of course was WWK and then
• 52:23
Speaker 3: later at wsa Z. Bob Smith. You see him from
• 52:25
Speaker 3: time to time as a spokesperson for Victory, Toyota and Bob.
• 52:30
