- 0:52SPEAKER_03: I love it.
- 0:54SPEAKER_03: The inaugural brought to you by down here, Vanish Credit Union.
- 0:59SPEAKER_03: And they don't like your bank.
- 1:00SPEAKER_08: We don't like your bank either.
- 1:02SPEAKER_03: Thanks to Vanish Credit Union for the shirts.
- 1:05SPEAKER_03: Thanks to Vanish Credit Union for supporting Youth Hockey.
- 1:14SPEAKER_03: Thrilled to have them as our flagship sponsor for 2026 and 2027.
- 1:22SPEAKER_03: So this is our first episode where we've changed the intro.
- 1:25SPEAKER_08: Nice intro, but hey, you know, um, want to give a big shout out to Marina Gakuk Shvili and Sean O'Brien, uh, our two partners at uh Vantage Credit Union who are instrumental in uh in bringing this deal together.
- 1:39SPEAKER_08: And we've got some really cool um you know news to share on this show about how our audience can benefit from this right off the bat.
- 1:48SPEAKER_08: But we're not gonna we're not gonna bury the lead.
- 1:49SPEAKER_08: We'll talk about that at the first break.
- 1:52SPEAKER_08: But um heck of a heck of a uh change in the weather here.
- 1:58SPEAKER_08: Um it's very, it's very it's very like a very nice and balmy here in uh in in Studio 1A.
- 2:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we had uh we had like a secondary day in the last week, but that that was kind of interesting.
- 2:11SPEAKER_03: I think that was like a Saturday as like uh spring or fall day.
- 2:18SPEAKER_03: Now we're getting back into the uh Augustine, although it's not oppressive.
- 2:24SPEAKER_03: Uh so it's the summer.
- 2:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I'm gonna take every day of it, because I tell you what, uh when January, February comes out, wait for the time we're so my plan is to enjoy the rest of this until it breaks.
- 2:39SPEAKER_03: And at least uh for the folks in St.
- 2:41SPEAKER_03: Louis, that's usually right after like it goes down about five, ten degrees.
- 2:46SPEAKER_03: It's still nice, but it's just not that oppressive.
- 2:49SPEAKER_03: And then September's kind of wonderful, and then we get into October.
- 2:53SPEAKER_03: October's hockey season.
- 2:55SPEAKER_03: So we're inside.
- 2:59SPEAKER_08: We talk about the weather a lot on this show.
- 3:01SPEAKER_08: Are are we like the progressive commercials, young homeowners becoming their parents?
- 3:06SPEAKER_03: I'm not a radar, and I I have worked with many folks that are really like the weather channel guys, the weather channel guys who got you know screens up and they've got the radar going, and the plotter and the whole band, or the Doppler, the Doppler and so the Doppler, Doppler 4, Doppler, Doppler 5,000.
- 3:26SPEAKER_08: Well, you make a great point.
- 3:28SPEAKER_08: The weather is starting to change or is on the cusp of changing.
- 3:31SPEAKER_08: And you know, we we talk about, you know, this is the time of year where um parent anxiety starts to creep up.
- 3:41SPEAKER_08: Uh kid anxiety sometimes follows the parents because we're heading into evaluation season.
- 3:48SPEAKER_08: And um, you know, when we originally started the show, I think if there were five parents, there were 50 parents who were always asking us or telling us or giving us, you know, a wink and a nod, hey, let's talk a little about a little bit about evaluation, and and not always in glowing terms.
- 4:06SPEAKER_08: Um, and I think it's important with an angle, with an angle, with an angle sometimes.
- 4:11SPEAKER_08: Um, and so you know, we're bringing on a uh a two-time guest now, a two-time guest.
- 4:16SPEAKER_08: Uh, last time we had this gentleman on, he was in studio with us back at our old days at uh at the Lou Info KLIS.
- 4:23SPEAKER_08: Um, but I don't think there's a better person really to kind of um not only just talk about everything that goes into youth hockey evaluation, specifically here in in uh St.
- 4:34SPEAKER_08: Louis and in the Missouri hockey uh district, but just in general, things that are going on uh as we as we head into a new season and some initiatives and just some some questions that may not be getting asked that we have answers to.
- 4:46SPEAKER_08: And that's our president, El Presidente of uh Missouri hockey, all of Missouri hockey, not just youth hockey, uh Chris Durso.
- 4:54SPEAKER_08: So, Chris, come on down.
- 4:56SPEAKER_08: Hey Chris, what's going on, bud?
- 4:58SPEAKER_08: How are we doing?
- 4:59SPEAKER_08: Dude, are you like in uh in a hostage situation there?
- 5:03SPEAKER_08: Yeah, like in a dark room.
- 5:07SPEAKER_01: How you been, man?
- 5:08SPEAKER_01: I've been great.
- 5:09SPEAKER_01: How are you guys?
- 5:10SPEAKER_03: Fantastic.
- 5:11SPEAKER_03: It's August, spring on.
- 5:12SPEAKER_03: We're ready for hockey season.
- 5:14SPEAKER_01: I know, like uh practice for my team starts next Tuesday.
- 5:16SPEAKER_01: So I got got seven days here.
- 5:19SPEAKER_08: Yeah, we've been kind of nibbling around the edges with uh what we like to call little skates all set all summer long.
- 5:24SPEAKER_08: We've we have skates, not practices, not you know, they're skates.
- 5:28SPEAKER_08: And so now we're getting in, you know.
- 5:30SPEAKER_08: I think I know uh high school tryouts are are beginning to start here, and I think as early as next week.
- 5:36SPEAKER_08: You've got organizations.
- 5:38SPEAKER_08: I think the um Rockets, for instance, are doing their eight U, six U draft uh coming up here in the and uh before the end of this month where they get the kids all the little jerseys.
- 5:48SPEAKER_08: So, you know, Chris, um, it's been a minute since we've had you on.
- 5:52SPEAKER_08: Uh, I think it was about this time last year, maybe a little bit later in the year.
- 5:55SPEAKER_08: But tell us a little bit about you know some initiatives and what to look forward to this season with Missouri hockey.
- 6:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so I think we've got a couple things cooking that I think are are huge for us anyway.
- 6:06SPEAKER_01: Um, the first thing is uh we're gonna start doing a quarterly newsletter uh to try to kind of get out information about uh about what's going on in Missouri hockey.
- 6:16SPEAKER_01: So there's a lot of yeah.
- 6:18SPEAKER_01: There's uh I think there's been like uh a few years here where we haven't had anything like that to go out to kind of inform families and and uh players and participants about what's going on.
- 6:30SPEAKER_01: So I think uh it's a good time.
- 6:32SPEAKER_01: I mean, we have a few new rings, uh, you know, the new car shield facilities going on.
- 6:37SPEAKER_01: We've got uh, you know, the Chesterfield uh trying to add on to their rink.
- 6:42SPEAKER_01: I know Kirkwood just renovated their rink, so there's a lot of things going on on the rink front.
- 6:47SPEAKER_01: Um, there's a lot of things going on.
- 6:49SPEAKER_01: Uh we're implementing game sheets uh throughout Missouri hockey this year.
- 6:54SPEAKER_01: So that's another uh new initiative that we just passed a couple months ago um just to kind of standardize score sheets throughout and and to allow um you know just live scoring.
- 7:06SPEAKER_01: Um and that'll be at the youth division, that'll be for the uh MVCHO, MVCHA in uh in Illinois for that high school league, and then mid-states was already doing it.
- 7:16SPEAKER_01: So yeah, um, you know, and most of the leagues around the country are doing things, things like that.
- 7:22SPEAKER_01: So um for us it's good because we're trying to implement uh some some cool things with the data that we can get out of the game sheet program, and that includes doing things with player safety, um, doing things with uh there's a fair play initiative that Minnesota hockey does, and basically they they award points.
- 7:44SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, if a team has certain or is under a certain threshold of penalties in a game, uh that kind of rewards good behavior.
- 7:52SPEAKER_01: So that's something we're trying to trying to do because we we find ourselves in a position where we're doing a lot of rules and discipline where we're we're punishing bad behavior, but we don't have a lot of things in our affiliate right now where we're rewarding uh good behavior, whether that be you know tracking penalties by associations, or maybe we give like a grant to to an association that has a um you know a good year in terms of not having a lot of discipline issues and that that kind of stuff.
- 8:19SPEAKER_01: So there's there's a lot of like cool things that we'll be able to do because we'll have access to the uh to the data that's provided by the the score sheet system.
- 8:27SPEAKER_01: So I'm excited about that.
- 8:29SPEAKER_03: I love it.
- 8:29SPEAKER_03: It's basically the lady bank, right?
- 8:32SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 8:34SPEAKER_03: And then uh on top of it, uh I I want to make sure I'm tracking the progress.
- 8:39SPEAKER_03: So what I'm hearing you say is uh no more stickers.
- 8:45SPEAKER_03: There's no more stickers when we were talking about there's no no more finding the we're going digital, baby.
- 8:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so there'll there'll be an adjustment period for for everyone, you know.
- 8:57SPEAKER_01: Uh we're gonna try to get iPads out to all the ranks if they don't already have them.
- 9:01SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, I I've had the experience of using them um, you know, at the tier one level and then with central states, and it's just it's seamless anymore.
- 9:11SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, you can have an uh a device and you put the code in and the game pulls up and the rosters are already in there, and and uh, you know, if someone's not there, you mark them absent or hurt or whatever, and and away you go.
- 9:24SPEAKER_01: And then it's easier for the referees too for game reporting.
- 9:27SPEAKER_01: You know, if there's an issue, they have access to the actual roster.
- 9:30SPEAKER_01: Uh they don't have to go looking up the the player.
- 9:33SPEAKER_01: That's a big uh it's a big piece for for the discipline process.
- 9:37SPEAKER_01: So we're excited about it.
- 9:38SPEAKER_03: I love the Lady Bang angle too, of rewarding the good behavior.
- 9:43SPEAKER_03: So uh I think like a lot of good things come out of it.
- 9:46SPEAKER_03: Minnesota uh Weldone uh on following the charge.
- 9:52SPEAKER_03: And uh yeah, we we we normally talk about things on the discipline uh the naughty list.
- 9:59SPEAKER_03: Uh but uh flood that let's talk about the good list.
- 10:03SPEAKER_03: I like it, Chris.
- 10:05SPEAKER_08: And I think the big thing is is you're not at the mercy of the volunteer parents uh handwriting.
- 10:12SPEAKER_08: Was that a was that is that a 38 or an 88?
- 10:15SPEAKER_08: Is you know, is is you know, who who wasn't that, you know, and I I think it's you know, we've had the experience, whether it's been at some out-of-town tournaments, is where I first saw it a few years back, and then obviously mid-states has been using it for the past two years.
- 10:28SPEAKER_08: Um, it does make it so so much easier.
- 10:31SPEAKER_08: Um, and it allows, like you said, I think um we had talked about this earlier when Chris and I were kind of show prepping, is like, you know, introducing more data that can, you know, help coach, help uh, you know, help kids, you know, feel more connected to the game, help parents and fans feel more connected to the game.
- 10:52SPEAKER_08: That's we need to help continue to grow this game.
- 10:54SPEAKER_08: And I think that's probably a pretty good segue into talking about some of your uh your other initiatives, um, you know, things that you want to try to accomplish and that you're hopeful with the rest of the the board members and uh affiliates here within Missouri hockey.
- 11:08SPEAKER_08: Like let's talk a little bit about how you want to you know get kick the season off here in 2026.
- 11:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so there's uh a lot of uh push, I think, at least from my perspective, and this is is things that I'm gonna bring to the board here in the next little while, but uh you know, areas around the country are doing a lot of growth initiatives where um you know they kind of have like just really like a set program where they say help associations grow, um, grow the game, whether that be um, you know, just new kids coming to the game or retention.
- 11:45SPEAKER_01: Um, and so what we want to do is try to award grants to our local associations if they meet some growth thresholds.
- 11:53SPEAKER_01: So that'll probably be coming down the down the pike here um in the next little while.
- 11:58SPEAKER_01: And you know, the the things that are they're kind of cool if it New York is really like a a model for this.
- 12:05SPEAKER_01: Um, they do different things, they kind of have uh seven initiatives that they like to see local associations do.
- 12:11SPEAKER_01: And if the association does these things, they check the checkbox.
- 12:14SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, they've seen uh a lot of growth.
- 12:17SPEAKER_01: And so um just like for me, the the cool thing about being the affiliate president is I get to go to the USA hockey meetings and kind of you know bend the ear of people that are doing different things around the country.
- 12:31SPEAKER_01: And and um so it's it's a it's a cool we actually have an affiliate presidents committee where we um we meet uh at the USA hockey meetings, then we have a meeting on our own.
- 12:42SPEAKER_01: Um and uh I've gotten a lot of good ideas from from that.
- 12:46SPEAKER_01: And one of those things would be the growth initiative.
- 12:48SPEAKER_01: And then uh we want to do some things in the the 6U8U realm.
- 12:52SPEAKER_01: USA hockey is uh kind of revamping their their ADM um programming.
- 12:58SPEAKER_01: Uh they sent some surveys out in uh a couple months ago, and I think that's gonna lead to some some bigger initiatives.
- 13:05SPEAKER_01: And then here locally, like what I'd like to see us do is just make uh 6U8U just more exciting, just uh, you know, uh just improve the product.
- 13:14SPEAKER_01: You know, I had a discussion with somebody at some point um with USA hockey in it.
- 13:20SPEAKER_01: The the idea was to make it sort of like uh banana ball, you know, like where it's just you know, it's just all fun all the time, full throttle.
- 13:29SPEAKER_01: You know, you you watch those uh those banana ball games on TV.
- 13:32SPEAKER_01: I haven't been to one, but apparently um, you know, they sell out almost everywhere they go, and it's just it's just fun, right?
- 13:40SPEAKER_01: You know, baseball could get a little bit boring, a little bit tedious, but um, you know, and I think six you eight you cross-sized hockey could maybe get the same way sometimes.
- 13:48SPEAKER_01: And I think um, you know, there's there's just a lot of things that we could do to make it make it a better uh experience.
- 13:54SPEAKER_08: Multi-puck, I'm telling you, multi-puck.
- 13:59SPEAKER_08: They don't hurt, they're little blue, they're blue pucks.
- 14:01SPEAKER_08: Let's go let's let's throw three pucks out there and see how many you can score.
- 14:04SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 14:05SPEAKER_01: I mean, things like that would be great, you know.
- 14:07SPEAKER_01: Like whether you have, you know, a little like five-minute window in a game where you do that or do some other things, kids come in costumes.
- 14:13SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 14:13SPEAKER_01: Like, you know, it's just uh there's there's a lot of opportunity there, I think, to to make the game.
- 14:20SPEAKER_01: And I think that helps with those growth initiatives too.
- 14:22SPEAKER_01: Just, you know, how do you keep a six you, eight you kid coming back for more?
- 14:27SPEAKER_01: Um, because there's so many other obstacles like expense and whatever else that we have uh that are problems or challenges in our game that I think uh if we can do some things there, I think it'll be important um for retention.
- 14:42SPEAKER_03: For 26 and 27 season, it's uh is 8U still gonna be half ice?
- 14:48SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 14:49unknown: Okay.
- 14:50unknown: Okay.
- 14:51SPEAKER_03: I thought I had heard something potentially 8 U maybe becoming full ice or some maybe a hybrid model.
- 15:01SPEAKER_01: So I uh there has been some talk about a hybrid model, um, where it, you know, for the eight you kids at the end of the season, you know, kind of that transition period to transition the last few weeks into into some full ice, but have it capped at at some uh some number of games.
- 15:19SPEAKER_01: So that's that's been something that there hasn't been a formal proposal for that uh just yet at the affiliate level here.
- 15:26SPEAKER_08: I I think something like that, if we were gonna do it, and I see the merit behind um that transition.
- 15:32SPEAKER_08: Either it's postseason, like a spring program, which a lot of affiliates, a lot of organizations are doing, or you bioband it.
- 15:40SPEAKER_08: You know, we talk a lot about biobanding, you know, kids and some of the research behind that.
- 15:45SPEAKER_08: I know Massachusetts really leaned into that after the Swedish and Finnish uh federations um did their study.
- 15:53SPEAKER_08: And you know, you could you are gonna have a a portion of these eight-year-olds who maybe could excel or it might be better for them to be on a bigger sheet, but maybe not the full season.
- 16:05SPEAKER_08: Maybe you you have certain weekends or certain jamborees where you do it.
- 16:10SPEAKER_08: And I think that there's a way to to help the growth of the game, but still, you know, we're talking about even midgets doing you know, three-on-three cross ice, being in that small area, no matter what age you are, it helps develop a lot of of skill, a lot of of hockey IQ, and a lot of hockey sense.
- 16:28SPEAKER_08: So I hope we don't abandon it fully.
- 16:30SPEAKER_01: Well, I think the the one thing we need to re-emphasize some of it, you know, I I think there's probably a real diversity of experiences that that uh families get depending upon what organization uh they're playing for or that kind of stuff.
- 16:47SPEAKER_01: And so I think it's important that we make sure we have a good development model across the board, but this, you know, wherever you you end up, you know, starting out, so that you know that the practices kind of look like the game, the you know, that they're doing the things that uh USA hockey, I mean the the science behind it is is great, right?
- 17:07SPEAKER_01: So um, so we just want to make sure the the um development model is good, and then you're right, like I think it at some point in the season, especially for the older kids, there is that little transition period where you know you're you're moving into to full ice hockey.
- 17:25SPEAKER_01: Um, and there needs to be, I think, something something there um to help that transition.
- 17:30SPEAKER_01: And then, you know, the other thing is there's there's probably, and this is probably I'm just spitballing here, and this isn't an official Missouri hockey, you know, proposal or anything, but there are uh areas around the country doing you know half-ice or cross-ice squirt hockey, especially at at the younger or the uh lower levels where it's you know just about to say that kids are learning how to skate still and that kind of stuff.
- 17:54SPEAKER_01: So I don't think that that's necessarily the not a bad idea, right?
- 18:01SPEAKER_03: I love it.
- 18:02SPEAKER_03: I love it.
- 18:02SPEAKER_03: Well, and uh, you know, I love the idea behind just you know where your cake where your costume uh to practice any how about that?
- 18:10SPEAKER_08: I mean, when you had the skills competition a few years back, I think it was Patty Kane put the Superman uh Superman cape on.
- 18:17SPEAKER_08: I mean, those are the types of things that like I don't know if any kids even remember if they quote unquote won their game at eight in the morning when it's one o'clock in the afternoon on a Saturday.
- 18:29SPEAKER_08: Right.
- 18:29SPEAKER_08: You know, so it to me it's um I I think the biggest thing, and and we've talked about this before, Chris, is is measuring retention.
- 18:38SPEAKER_08: I love the idea of putting metrics and using data to understand um, you know, where affiliates could use help, where clubs could use help, where individual coaches could use some help by just looking.
- 18:53SPEAKER_08: And and there's ways for us to do this.
- 18:55SPEAKER_08: I mean, cripe, you could probably look at USA hockey renewals over a 20-year period and be able to kind of say, okay, well, we've you know, you're gonna lose, let's say after six you, you know you're gonna lose 10.
- 19:06SPEAKER_08: That's just off the top, you know.
- 19:08SPEAKER_08: But how do you how do you like keep that from going to 20 to 30 to 50 percent by the time they're 12?
- 19:14SPEAKER_08: I mean, we gotta gotta compete.
- 19:17SPEAKER_08: And right now, I think across the country for the first time in a while, aren't numbers down or weren't numbers trending down, or maybe they've stabilized.
- 19:25SPEAKER_08: Um, you know, there's a lot going on there.
- 19:29SPEAKER_01: I think uh so I one of my hats that I wear, I serve on the membership council for USA hockey.
- 19:35SPEAKER_01: And so um there is some really good data initiatives that they're they're putting in place um that will help, I think, target programs that might be experiencing some challenges.
- 19:48SPEAKER_01: Uh it will help um kind of identify uh what the retention issues might be.
- 19:55SPEAKER_01: So, you know, to your point, if somebody's registered one year and then they don't re don't come back, you know, now you know who that who that is, let's talk to them, let's find out what their experiences are.
- 20:06SPEAKER_01: You know, let's let's see why.
- 20:08SPEAKER_01: Was it, you know, it became too costly, it became too serious, it was, you know, maybe we need something like more of a recreational opportunity for a player like that.
- 20:17SPEAKER_01: And you know, there's not a lot of of rec recreational uh opportunities in our game anymore, you know, almost up and down the border.
- 20:25SPEAKER_01: You look at at uh squirt and hire and teams are traveling out of town, and and uh maybe that's just you know an opportunity for us to add some programming that's not available right now.
- 20:36SPEAKER_03: Do you think uh uh just curious your take on this?
- 20:40SPEAKER_03: Uh you've got uh the ladder.
- 20:44SPEAKER_03: Uh the the floor has dropped here recently the nine hockey where you can play on a triple A team.
- 20:52SPEAKER_03: Do you foresee that's gonna keep dropping?
- 20:55SPEAKER_03: And we're gonna I mean, are we eventually gonna have triple A6U hockey around the country?
- 21:01SPEAKER_08: I think I saw it on Facebook or somebody forwarded it to me.
- 21:07SPEAKER_01: One of my buddies just had a uh grandkid and uh somebody sent me a uh you know, one U Triple A hockey, you know.
- 21:15SPEAKER_01: So that made me laugh.
- 21:17SPEAKER_01: I sent I sent it over to him, but uh yeah, I think it's just uh um you know everybody has this FOMO, I think, where they feel like they have to, you know, um, and it's I I don't know if that's something you ever fix, it's just a societal thing more than anything, but but um you know I hope not.
- 21:37SPEAKER_01: I hope it doesn't keep dropping to eight you and six you.
- 21:40SPEAKER_01: I just I don't think that's healthy for our game.
- 21:42SPEAKER_01: I don't think it's healthy for the the player.
- 21:45SPEAKER_01: I don't think uh you know it doesn't need to be that serious, it needs to be fun, it needs to be something they want to keep coming back and doing.
- 21:53SPEAKER_01: And I think you know, one of the things is we just adultify everything and and there's you know.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: That's the one drawback I think from game sheets is that like all the stats and stuff are going to be out there for for people to digest too.
- 22:06SPEAKER_01: And I that was one of the the things that I was concerned about when we started talking about it is that would that create create some cultural like issues?
- 22:15SPEAKER_08: Um well you just don't just don't upload them if you're 14 or 12 year old.
- 22:20SPEAKER_03: Oh, you upload them and then you tell everybody that you're Instagram or 40U kid had 12 goals.
- 22:28SPEAKER_08: Well and let's think about that too.
- 22:30SPEAKER_08: And this is why I think it's so important.
- 22:31SPEAKER_08: And I I think Chris, you agree with me to continue on with half ice at six you and eight you because you do have some kids who are you are physically maturing at a quicker rate, um, could be born in January, playing against kids who were born in September, October, November.
- 22:49SPEAKER_08: And if you go to full ice, I think you just precipitate one one kid just going up and down the ice with the puck on his or her stick.
- 22:57SPEAKER_08: And I still think with that's why I'm I'm I'm not joking around when I say let's do multiple pucks and cross ice, that way you're gonna get more touches.
- 23:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I I think that uh when you look at it, I it's been a long time, it's probably been 16 years since I coached it was it was a might full ice game, uh, probably 2008, something like that.
- 23:25SPEAKER_01: So um, you know, that's how that game was.
- 23:29SPEAKER_01: It was there was you know one or two kids that were pretty good and they tended to have the puck, and then everybody else just kind of chased them around to try to get it, and it you know, it there weren't a lot of puck touches in those games, I can tell you that for sure.
- 23:43SPEAKER_08: Yeah, I mean, and I'm I'm I'm coaching an 11U team right now, and you know we rarely do anything full ice, even at even at 11U, um, which is the first year of Pee-wee, you know, because you know, some of those kids I mean it's it's a long way.
- 24:01SPEAKER_08: Just mountains, right?
- 24:02SPEAKER_08: Well, we do mountains.
- 24:03SPEAKER_08: We do absolutely do mountains.
- 24:04SPEAKER_08: Kids are gonna win in the third period.
- 24:09SPEAKER_08: We win in the third period, kids.
- 24:11SPEAKER_08: Um, well, we've got a little bit of time left here.
- 24:14SPEAKER_08: I and again, thank you everybody.
- 24:16SPEAKER_08: Chris Durso, Missouri uh um hockey president, joining us here today.
- 24:20SPEAKER_08: You know, we we let off talking about the evaluation period, and uh and Drew did a great job of of putting some uh pen to paper or some pixels to screen based on some people who were bending his ear.
- 24:32SPEAKER_08: Um, you know, talk a little bit about, you know, are you having conversations at the organizational level with directors and and and club presidents about learning how they are doing their evaluations if there's best practices to share not only amongst different uh birth years, but amongst the different organizations.
- 24:54SPEAKER_08: What are some things that you and Missouri hockey are are doing to help uh help take the temperature down uh in August and September as we do these evals?
- 25:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so I think like that's mainly like a youth division thing, um, but I've experienced it because I've been, you know, I was a coaching director at Merrimack a long time ago um and and went through the just managed the whole evaluation process back then.
- 25:18SPEAKER_01: And you know, I don't I don't know if there's like one perfect way to do it.
- 25:22SPEAKER_01: Uh I think as a you know, as Missouri hockey, I think one of the the ways we try to keep the process honest systematically is to have that declaration season, you know, and during that October period where you know teams, you know, let's say a club declares at one level, but really, you know, that that declaration season kind of keeps them honest.
- 25:43SPEAKER_01: And you know, maybe you you kept a kid at a level that he shouldn't have been playing at, and now the team's better than than it would have been, and and now that team moves up to to a different level or that kind of thing.
- 25:56SPEAKER_01: So I think it that uh the youth division and the commissioners have such an important role uh in terms of of the you know keeping clubs honest um during that that declaration season.
- 26:09SPEAKER_01: So I think that that as a Missouri hockey function, I think that declaration declaration season is important.
- 26:16SPEAKER_01: Um with regard to um you know club leadership and evaluations and things like that.
- 26:22SPEAKER_01: I think um going forward in the spring, this is another initiative when you asked me earlier.
- 26:27SPEAKER_01: Um, we're gonna try to do uh another leadership conference and bring USA hockey in and and kind of go through things just like that, um, how to grow, how to retain, how to manage.
- 26:40SPEAKER_01: And I think that's you know important.
- 26:42SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, there's some clubs that do a really good job here in town, and then there's some some that maybe are falling a little bit short.
- 26:49SPEAKER_01: Um, and so we want to make sure that just goes back to having a kind of a uniform experience.
- 26:54SPEAKER_01: Um that that uh that when somebody registers to play hockey in St.
- 27:00SPEAKER_01: Louis, that they're having a good experience.
- 27:03SPEAKER_03: Chris, uh, we got to pay a quick couple bills here.
- 27:06SPEAKER_03: Can you stick around for us for a little bit longer?
- 27:09SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 27:10SPEAKER_03: And when we come back, we're gonna play urban legend.
- 27:13SPEAKER_03: Uh we're gonna throw out some of these conspiracy theories that I've heard uh around ranks, and I'm sure you have too.
- 27:22SPEAKER_03: And we're gonna uh uh we're gonna throw these out to you and say fact fiction is this urban legend, is the truth, how much truth is in it.
- 27:31SPEAKER_03: So uh let's dig into that when we come back just a bit.
- 27:35SPEAKER_03: Too many men on the mic is presented by Banage Credit.

- 28:34SPEAKER_03: Membership eligibility is required.
- 28:37SPEAKER_03: Now, back to the ship.
- 28:40SPEAKER_08: Well, huge thanks to Vanage.
- 28:42SPEAKER_08: A hundred bucks every week.
- 28:44SPEAKER_08: I mean, did she say every week or every month?
- 28:46SPEAKER_03: Every month.
- 28:47SPEAKER_08: Okay, every month.
- 28:48SPEAKER_03: Every week.
- 28:49SPEAKER_08: Well, that would be 50.
- 28:50SPEAKER_08: I mean, but every month you listen to too many men on the mic, you have a chance to enter.
- 28:54SPEAKER_08: I mean, can conceptually, you could have twelve hundred dollars by the end of the season to go spend up pure hockey.
- 29:00SPEAKER_08: I don't know about you, but that sounds like a good reason to listen.
- 29:02SPEAKER_08: Um, we're back with Chris Durso, president of Missouri hockey.
- 29:06SPEAKER_08: And uh, you know, the the tease from before the break was let's talk some urban legends, maybe not so urban legends, and uh dive a little bit deep into some parental tinfoil hack conspiracy theories around evals.
- 29:19SPEAKER_03: So, Chris, I'm gonna throw the first start in uh our game urban legend here on evaluation conspiracy theories.
- 29:28SPEAKER_03: I'm starting with this one because Jared and I have both been on youth hockey boards before.
- 29:34SPEAKER_03: Uh you have as well.
- 29:36SPEAKER_03: And so uh I I find this fascinating, but uh I'd love to get your take on this.
- 29:42SPEAKER_03: Uh so uh board favorites, urban legend or not, uh most frequent suspicion is that head coaches, assistant coaches, and board members reserve top-tier spots for their own children, sponsors or close friends, leaving only a fraction of roster spots open for fair competition.
- 30:04SPEAKER_03: Chris, is that fact or is it fiction?
- 30:08SPEAKER_00: My experience That's a mixed bag.
- 30:18SPEAKER_05: Oh, okay, here we go.
- 30:19SPEAKER_05: We're gonna still I love it, we're gonna end up here, man.
- 30:26SPEAKER_01: I'm sure that there's situations where board members full disclosure Chris Derso is uh Chris Derso Esquire.
- 30:32SPEAKER_08: He is an attorney outlaw.
- 30:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, I I'm sure that there's situations.
- 30:38SPEAKER_01: Uh I'm an attorney, I'm not your attorney, right?
- 30:41SPEAKER_01: Um, you're not our attorney.
- 30:46SPEAKER_01: I am sure there are uh situations where politics and favorites have have happened.
- 30:53SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, for the most part though, I don't I haven't seen that.
- 30:57SPEAKER_01: I really haven't.
- 30:58SPEAKER_01: Like I just so I would say for the most part myth, but there's definitely situations I've seen where it's it's fact.
- 31:06SPEAKER_03: Well, I I I'll just add to that this I'm gonna say fiction from a board member perspective because I had never been in a youth hockey board meeting ever where we were having a conversation about uh uh youth hockey association because said board members were tying their kids together.
- 31:28SPEAKER_08: No, no, the the only time this ever like even remotely happened, you might remember this.
- 31:36SPEAKER_08: I the the the names will be changed to protect the uh well, I shouldn't change because one of them wasn't innocent.
- 31:42SPEAKER_08: Um, we did have a board member who was assigning bib numbers, and you know, the first two skates, the bib numbers, and are supposed to be assigned based on alphabetical order, and um this board member was positioning their child with what they perceived to be better players, so um, and the long and short of it is we it was it was found out.
- 32:10SPEAKER_03: So look for that biv number basically.
- 32:12SPEAKER_08: Well, it was and it was found out.
- 32:13SPEAKER_08: I mean, look, you're always gonna have a situation where a parent or a uh an enabler is trying, you know, maybe has an agenda.
- 32:24SPEAKER_08: Um, I would say for the most part, the uh this is a situation of correlation, maybe not causation, where if you have a situation where you know, maybe you've got a board member who is really was a good hockey player when he or she was growing up and then became a coach, their child is going to be evaluated at a certain level because there's a correlation there.
- 32:49SPEAKER_08: It's not a causation that, oh, you know, we're we're putting this kid on this particular team because of his or her mom or dad.
- 32:58SPEAKER_08: I think that that does happen, but I think for the most part, I mean, I know being a board member and a coach, um, I've coached double A teams, I've coached B1 teams, and I've always coached my kids.
- 33:11SPEAKER_08: So I can speak from my own personal experience that the kids, in my experience, the kids pick the team.
- 33:18SPEAKER_03: But but I guess what I kind of heard you say there is it's in the jeans.
- 33:22SPEAKER_08: Some well, unless you have jean shorts on.
- 33:25SPEAKER_08: Don't do jean shorts.
- 33:27SPEAKER_08: Gene shorts are bad.
- 33:28SPEAKER_03: All right, all right.
- 33:29SPEAKER_03: We got we we got more urban mess here.
- 33:32SPEAKER_03: Uh Chris, next we've got the predetermined roster.
- 33:35SPEAKER_03: Many parents believe evaluators and the fans hold clipboards, holding clipboards are just going through the motions to fulfill the policy while the roster was secretly finalized weeks before tryouts.
- 33:51SPEAKER_03: Fact or fiction, Chris.
- 33:54SPEAKER_01: That's fiction.
- 33:55SPEAKER_01: I I feel like every evaluation staff that I've ever been a part of has uh has been there with with good intentions and and with uh you know, trying to be as objective as possible, even though it's it's a naturally it's a subjective process.
- 34:12SPEAKER_03: Like uh it's it's just you know you're trying to figure out who are the best skaters, who are the who has the best hockey sense, who you know, you're trying you're trying to like figure those things out as you're watching, and and I would agree with that, and I would add that sometimes when I've seen evaluations and evaluators where you have more than one, they're really making a concerted effort to make sure that they've covered and accounted for every kid out there, every single good number that's out there.
- 34:41SPEAKER_03: I've seen that happen multiple times.
- 34:43SPEAKER_08: You know, I think that um organizations that have a plan and put as much um thought into the evaluation and create try to create benchmarks and have multiple eyes and have a plan amongst the evaluators, tend to have the the best results.
- 35:05SPEAKER_08: I think from a parent standpoint, you have to trust and realize that it's not about um creating a quote unquote super team, it's understanding this moment in time for your player what level of competition is he or she going to have the most success, which will lead to having the most fun, which will lead to them staying with the game.
- 35:30SPEAKER_08: The biggest caveat here is this is an imperfect system, and there might be an opportunity where your child is misplaced.
- 35:41SPEAKER_08: There's also a really good opportunity that your child is going to be a different hockey player in December or January than they were in August and September, and that's a good thing.
- 35:49SPEAKER_08: Um, good organizations, the deck season, and even some organizations by who who stretch that bandwidth of we've got until December 31st until this is written in stone.
- 36:00SPEAKER_08: Um I would say that it's a it's a it's a it's a myth with the caveat that the better the organizations put thoughts and and process behind it, um, the better those and and the more uh reasonable those conversations can be.
- 36:17SPEAKER_08: Um and and the one other thing I will say is evaluations and whether this is a good thing or bad thing is not the question, but the evaluation process, especially when you're in that in that central states AA, triple A, it starts before the tryouts because many of these clubs are hosting skates and they're hosting um you know spring programs.
- 36:41SPEAKER_08: But I think again, I agree wholeheartedly with you with Chris that this is a myth.
- 36:46SPEAKER_03: All right, how about uh urban legend number three?
- 36:50SPEAKER_03: Holding players back to stack lower teams as popular theory claims that directors deliberately place a dominant player on a lower tier team specifically to guarantee that team wins a division championship.
- 37:08SPEAKER_03: Chris, what do you think?
- 37:09SPEAKER_03: Fact or fiction?
- 37:11SPEAKER_01: I think for the most part that's fiction.
- 37:14SPEAKER_01: I think there's some, you know, if you're a smaller organization and let's say you only have, you know, I I just I look at some of the experiences I've had, you know, there there are like double-A players playing on B-level teams sometimes in organizations that don't have a lot of players.
- 37:31SPEAKER_01: So I think that happens just a really good point, yeah.
- 37:34SPEAKER_03: For small organizations that don't have a lot of players, uh absolutely.
- 37:38SPEAKER_01: But I think for the most part, the at least in Missouri hockey, the declaration season kind of keeps that that on, you know, there's there's a little bit of honesty that has to happen, you know.
- 37:49SPEAKER_01: If if a player is gonna come out and score five goals every game playing at a B level, you know, that team probably gets moved up to the next level, right?
- 37:56SPEAKER_01: So um just kind of way the process works.
- 37:59SPEAKER_01: So I don't I haven't seen it very much, but it probably happens.
- 38:04SPEAKER_08: One time I've seen it.
- 38:06SPEAKER_08: One time.
- 38:07SPEAKER_08: Um and I would I would say for the most part, my experience has actually been um coaches want to fight that.
- 38:15SPEAKER_08: They want to they want to deck up or they wanna they they want to be in the higher division first.
- 38:21SPEAKER_08: Right.
- 38:21SPEAKER_08: Um, I've seen it one time, um, and that person ruined it for everyone.
- 38:28SPEAKER_08: But I think for the most part, most most coaches, players, parents, uh organizations would rather deck up and see how it goes.
- 38:37SPEAKER_08: Um, obviously, the and I've seen this firsthand being a part of of a board as a view that you know Missouri hockey, the youth divisions, you know, you play enough teams in in in September and October, we know where you're falling.
- 38:53SPEAKER_08: It's really well done.
- 38:54SPEAKER_03: All right, one more urban legend.
- 38:57SPEAKER_03: Uh target wretches.
- 38:59SPEAKER_03: Uh this theory is that uh the parent had a disagreement or a board member the previous season.
- 39:07SPEAKER_03: They often suspect a child is being punished during evaluation.
- 39:14SPEAKER_03: So solicious.
- 39:16SPEAKER_03: What do you think?
- 39:17SPEAKER_08: Silicious actors.
- 39:19SPEAKER_08: That's a that's a word.
- 39:25SPEAKER_01: I just don't see very much of that.
- 39:27SPEAKER_01: I mean you know, I'm sure that there's people with vendettas and stuff out there, but but uh, you know, I think for the most part, the people involved in administration at this, you know, in this game are good-hearted people that really want to do right by kids and families and keep kids and families in the game.
- 39:47SPEAKER_01: And so um, so the vast majority of of organizations, I just don't think that that that's anything that's ever even like in the realm of possibilities.
- 39:58SPEAKER_01: But you know, I'm sure it's happened.
- 40:01SPEAKER_03: I love your answer because I want to believe absolutely not.
- 40:06SPEAKER_03: Uh good organizations, people are good.
- 40:09SPEAKER_03: Uh, I believe it until I see differently.
- 40:11SPEAKER_03: Uh, but I'm with you.
- 40:12SPEAKER_03: Uh the possibility that the door could be open to perhaps have been dead out there.
- 40:20SPEAKER_08: Well, so so here's the thing here's the thing, here's the thing.
- 40:23SPEAKER_08: I have been around evaluations and and tryouts and placements where you know coaches and evaluators have held their nose and said we're gonna take this kid despite you know what we know is coming down the path.
- 40:36SPEAKER_08: I think it's you're looking, you have two groups of people looking through the window from opposite sides.
- 40:41SPEAKER_08: You know, one person, you know, a family who thinks it's a grudge or a vendetta, whereas everybody else is like, no, you've been a problem, a dry, you know, and and sometimes you can't, you you've got to step outside of your own bubble and maybe try to evaluate yourself if if you're feeling that as a parent, that there are problems with a specific coach or there's problems with an organization, and it's year after year, and it's different people every year.
- 41:09SPEAKER_08: Well, the common denominator is you.
- 41:11SPEAKER_08: And I will say this yeah, I will say this.
- 41:14SPEAKER_08: There are, especially as you age up, because as you age up, as your kids get older, what ends up happening is like kids catch up, the skills, skill levels start to level out.
- 41:25SPEAKER_08: Then yeah, I think the the family baggage, it's not grudge or vendetta, it's like you know, it's a total package.
- 41:34SPEAKER_08: You're not just taking a kid and putting him or her on a team, it's like you're dealing with the you become a family for the next six to seven months.
- 41:41SPEAKER_08: So I think there is some of that in there, but uh an absolute grudge, um, like the Hatfields and McCoys, no, that doesn't happen.
- 41:48SPEAKER_08: That does not happen.
- 41:49SPEAKER_03: Chris, don't you think some of these conspiracies being a part of East Hockey uh for as long as you have and continuing to be a leader here in the state of Missouri is a reflection of just the investment that some of these parents make?
- 42:06SPEAKER_03: And what I mean is, well, I spent money at three camps this summer.
- 42:11SPEAKER_03: And uh yeah, I might not know uh a lot about hockey, but since I've spent money on three camps this summer, then that means my kid is better than somebody that didn't go to three camps this summer.
- 42:25SPEAKER_03: Is that some of uh what's feeding this, do you think?
- 42:29SPEAKER_01: Uh I think it's financial.
- 42:31SPEAKER_01: It's also, I mean, we talked about it earlier, it's the FOMO thing.
- 42:35SPEAKER_01: I, you know, um I'm not gonna mention any names, but they're you know, people think that their their son or daughter has to play at a certain level in order to get to the next level.
- 42:50SPEAKER_01: And if they're not there at you know, whatever age, 13, 14, 15, they start to get you know a little bit panicked.
- 42:57SPEAKER_01: And maybe they you know send their kids out of town or they're you know, or or do some some crazy, I don't know, I'm gonna say crazy, but I I think there's there's some things like that that happen, right?
- 43:07SPEAKER_01: And so it's because they have so much invested in it, and you know, it's hard to see your kid, you know, fall short of their goals, too, right?
- 43:16SPEAKER_01: So that's that's another thing, I think.
- 43:19SPEAKER_01: As I'm not a parent, so I don't know exactly how that that feels, but you know, that's that's gotta be something that that you have to handle as a parent.
- 43:27SPEAKER_01: How do you teach your kid how to deal with adversity?
- 43:30SPEAKER_01: Um, maybe not making the team that they wanted to make, and now they have to settle for playing on another team and maybe being maybe being the best player on that team, you know, or or um you know, maybe not, maybe in the middle of the pack, and how do you move up to the top of the pack?
- 43:44SPEAKER_01: You know, it's just um I think it goes into to parenting and and then it it's a cultural thing more than anything else that that uh you know everybody wants the best for their kids.
- 43:56SPEAKER_08: Um I think that that's a great sentence to end.
- 44:00SPEAKER_08: On um everybody does want the best for their kids, and I think that that's you know ubiquitous across most of you you hockey.
- 44:09SPEAKER_08: Precipitate, ubiquitous, salacious, erroneous.
- 44:14SPEAKER_08: Um Chris, uh let's take it back to the beginning when we we talked a little bit about that 6U8U experience.
- 44:21SPEAKER_08: I know you and I talked offline.
- 44:22SPEAKER_08: Drew and I, too many men on the mic advantage credit unit are excited to hopefully help make that experience even better this season.
- 44:29SPEAKER_08: We're looking forward to hopefully sitting down with you and others to work on that, maybe have a concert or two.
- 44:35SPEAKER_08: Um, but getting you know between the benches, talking to the kids, yucking it up, but really, really, you know, having fun, um, having the coaches have fun and the kids have fun and the families have fun.
- 44:46SPEAKER_08: So thank you for all you do.
- 44:48SPEAKER_08: Um, you've been a great friend.
- 44:50SPEAKER_08: I talk to you a lot about things from a coaching standpoint, and you know, you've been a you know a fixture in our life here for the last few years as you coached my son a few years ago.
- 44:59SPEAKER_08: So thank you for all you do for for youth hockey for Missouri hockey, and we'll look forward to having you on again here really soon.
- 45:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, I appreciate all the all the things you guys do.
- 45:08SPEAKER_01: This is awesome.
- 45:09SPEAKER_01: And uh I like the new format too.
- 45:11SPEAKER_01: It's good.
- 45:12SPEAKER_01: So we'll have to get you down.
- 45:14SPEAKER_08: Next time I'll have to get a matching shirt too, so I can well we'll send we'll send you some new swag.
- 45:19SPEAKER_08: We got some swag, we got some swag out there, so we're all set.
- 45:23SPEAKER_01: Absolutely, guys.
- 45:24SPEAKER_01: Well, thanks for the time and uh appreciate all you do and uh look forward to working with you.
- 45:28SPEAKER_08: Thanks, Chris.
- 45:29SPEAKER_01: Talk to you soon.
- 45:30SPEAKER_01: Take care.
- 45:33SPEAKER_08: I loved the urban legend.
- 45:35SPEAKER_08: Urban legend.
- 45:35SPEAKER_08: I loved it, right?
- 45:36SPEAKER_08: I loved how you I loved your angle on all that, and and there's there's sometimes a little there what happens is it happened once, and then it becomes like the story.
- 45:47SPEAKER_08: Nobody ever wants to hear, like, oh, things were great, the kid was on the right team, everybody was happy, it was awesome.
- 45:54SPEAKER_08: Nobody wants to hear that.
- 45:56SPEAKER_08: Everybody wants a salacious story.
- 45:59SPEAKER_03: The other thing I was thinking about was uh swimming, for example.
- 46:04SPEAKER_03: Let's let's use that.
- 46:05SPEAKER_08: That thing you that thing you do before you die.
- 46:10SPEAKER_03: There's time for that.
- 46:11SPEAKER_03: I mean, it's objective.
- 46:14SPEAKER_03: So so uh we don't have as a community a template, a way that we say uh tear style evaluations are gonna are gonna happen.
- 46:25SPEAKER_03: We're gonna we're gonna see how fast you escape from the goal line.
- 46:29SPEAKER_03: Uh then we're gonna time you on this, then we're gonna time you on that.
- 46:32SPEAKER_03: And so it's objective.
- 46:35SPEAKER_03: Uh it's it's it's it's much more subjective, I is what I meant to say.
- 46:40SPEAKER_03: And so uh you either have the puck or you don't have the puck.
- 46:44SPEAKER_03: And if you don't have the puck, then you're looking for behavior and things that are happening that not necessarily you can measure, yeah.
- 46:51SPEAKER_08: Yeah, and you know, I think that that's a great and apologies to all my swimmer friends out there.
- 46:56SPEAKER_08: I actually have a good oh, I actually have a a friend who's a very good who's a very big time swimmer.
- 47:03SPEAKER_08: See, I I scared Drew so much he got out of the picture here.
- 47:07SPEAKER_08: Um you know, I think as I go back and I and I always go back to what um what what I said about having a plan.
- 47:16SPEAKER_08: Um having a plan is the most important thing in all of this.
- 47:20SPEAKER_08: And my experience with organizations that I've been a part of evaluations or tryouts, um, is when you have a matrix and you're able to set a benchmark about those types of things.
- 47:32SPEAKER_08: You know, scale of one to five, how does this person, you know, and this player skate backwards, skate forwards, control the puck.
- 47:40SPEAKER_08: Um, and and part of this, I think you hit the nail on the head.
- 47:44SPEAKER_08: Like, how often does this player have the puck on his or her stick?
- 47:49SPEAKER_08: What how are do you notice them when they're out there?
- 47:52SPEAKER_08: And I I always tell players and and and parents if they ask, is as you're going into tryouts and evaluations, you know, you want to play and perform as if it was game seven of the Stanley Cup.
- 48:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 48:10SPEAKER_08: Because absolutely.
- 48:12SPEAKER_08: Uh it's line change.
- 48:14SPEAKER_08: Line change is the biggest.
- 48:16SPEAKER_08: I mean, that's a good line change is as good as an assist.
- 48:19SPEAKER_03: Well, and the coach, the one that uh showed me a great back checker.
- 48:23SPEAKER_03: Uh I'm still uh love a great back checker.
- 48:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah, uh doesn't have the puck, but skates all the way from the offensive zone back and helps its defenseman out.
- 48:32SPEAKER_03: Defenseman.
- 48:33SPEAKER_08: There you go.
- 48:36SPEAKER_08: No, um well, we've got to play another pay another bill here.
- 48:38SPEAKER_08: Um we're gonna take a quick break and then we'll be back for uh for some uh modified trivia.

- 50:33SPEAKER_03: We are back.
- 50:34SPEAKER_03: Uh back from an ice segment first or so, and now we're moving into a continuation.
- 50:41SPEAKER_03: We had this a little bit last week with some trivia.
- 50:44SPEAKER_03: So this is uh uh version two of the trivia, but uh we don't have Grant here, so we could still put the we could still put it up.
- 50:51SPEAKER_08: I I mean we gotta do the intro.
- 50:53SPEAKER_08: I mean, I mean we absolutely have to do it.
- 50:54SPEAKER_08: We gotta do the intro.
- 50:58SPEAKER_02: Grant killer salesman.
- 51:00SPEAKER_08: Grant the killer salesman.
- 51:01SPEAKER_02: Sometimes here it's too many men on the mic hockey trivia time.
- 51:06SPEAKER_02: Now here's your host, Grant the Killer Saulsman.
- 51:14SPEAKER_08: And he's on a Grant's on assignment.
- 51:16SPEAKER_08: Grant's on assignment.
- 51:18SPEAKER_03: So uh what we're gonna do here is uh uh a best of five.
- 51:23SPEAKER_03: Uh so uh Jared's got five questions, I've got five questions, and whoever loses uh has to has to skate about.
- 51:32SPEAKER_03: Uh and we'll get this on video.
- 51:34SPEAKER_08: Absolutely.
- 51:36SPEAKER_03: But these are tough questions.
- 51:38SPEAKER_03: I these are not uh these are not slam dunks, and uh I'm gonna move my screen.
- 51:42SPEAKER_08: For the listening audience at home, I originally wanted the loser to have to be in net uh and play goalie at our next practice, but somebody was a little afraid to do that.
- 51:52unknown: I'm not a goalie.
- 51:52SPEAKER_08: The senior the senior citizen on the uh on on the show.
- 51:59SPEAKER_03: All right, so so I'll I'll I'll I'll fire first.
- 52:03SPEAKER_03: All right, and uh, and then we can alter.
- 52:05SPEAKER_03: So uh I love this question because she wrote it, right?
- 52:12SPEAKER_08: All right.
- 52:13SPEAKER_03: So who is the only player, Jared, in NHL history to record 10 points, six goals, and four assists.
- 52:25SPEAKER_06: Daryl Sittler.
- 52:30SPEAKER_08: Toronto Maple Leafs.
- 52:31SPEAKER_08: You know who his line mate was?
- 52:33SPEAKER_08: Landy McDonald.
- 52:35SPEAKER_03: So uh many people I think would have picked Wayne Gas.
- 52:42SPEAKER_08: That's one nothing, right?
- 52:44SPEAKER_08: That's one nothing.
- 52:45SPEAKER_08: All right, okay.
- 52:48SPEAKER_08: So all of my questions started in 1972 or later, okay, in deference to you know our our our fearless leader here.
- 52:58SPEAKER_08: Um all right, here's one for you.
- 53:01SPEAKER_08: Since 1983, there have been eight US born first overall draft picks.
- 53:09SPEAKER_08: Can you name the first one?
- 53:12SPEAKER_03: Since 1983.
- 53:23SPEAKER_08: Well, that doesn't mean 83 what he was I'm just saying since 1983 there's only been there's only been yet there's been eight US per form yeah.
- 53:33SPEAKER_08: So uh yeah, you know.
- 53:41SPEAKER_08: This by the way is our official timer.
- 53:46SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna take a stab.
- 53:47SPEAKER_03: I do not know this one, and uh be the two Brian Lawton, Minnesota North Stars.
- 54:02SPEAKER_08: That in that draft, we had uh U.S.
- 54:05SPEAKER_08: born players.
- 54:05SPEAKER_08: There was five, three of the first five were U.S.
- 54:08SPEAKER_08: born.
- 54:08SPEAKER_08: That draft was Brian Lawton, um Slavon Turjan, who was Canadian, um, you had Pat Lafontaine, American, Steve Eiserman, and then Tom Barraso.
- 54:22SPEAKER_08: So three of the top five were uh three of the top five were U.S.
- 54:27SPEAKER_08: born players, and uh Brian Lawton, who actually had a decent career?
- 54:31SPEAKER_08: I would I think most would say he didn't live up to first overall pick, especially when you had uh Turjan, Lafontaine, Iserman, and Barrasso following you.
- 54:40SPEAKER_08: Um, but yeah, absolutely.
- 54:41SPEAKER_08: Uh he went on to become a GM and was also a player agent.
- 54:46SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 54:48SPEAKER_03: Okay, question two.
- 54:49SPEAKER_03: Who are the only two goaltenders in NHL history to earn a shutout in a game where they also personally scored a goal?
- 55:03SPEAKER_07: Hmm.
- 55:07SPEAKER_08: There's two of them.
- 55:08SPEAKER_08: Shutout and a goal.
- 55:10SPEAKER_03: Shutout and a goalie.
- 55:13SPEAKER_08: Um well, whenever you're talking about goals and goalies, you have to talk about uh Martin Brodeur.
- 55:20SPEAKER_08: Is he one of them?
- 55:22SPEAKER_08: And I'm gonna go on a limb here.
- 55:26SPEAKER_08: Total Homer.
- 55:28SPEAKER_08: Chris Osgood.
- 55:30SPEAKER_03: I love the answers.
- 55:32SPEAKER_03: No.
- 55:38SPEAKER_08: So it's one it's one one or one one.
- 55:41SPEAKER_08: And uh now I'm gonna stick on the uh I'm gonna stick on the goalie trend here.
- 55:46SPEAKER_08: Okay, stick on the goalie trend here.
- 55:48SPEAKER_08: This is this is very, very, this is not like me, but I'm gonna stay on the goalie track.
- 55:52SPEAKER_08: Second question.
- 55:53SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 55:54SPEAKER_08: What goalie is the NHL all-time leader in points with 48?
- 56:06unknown: 48, that's awesome.
- 56:09SPEAKER_07: 48 points.
- 56:16SPEAKER_08: Points leader, goalie points leader.
- 56:18SPEAKER_08: Yes.
- 56:19SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 56:22SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna say Marty Burder.
- 56:27SPEAKER_08: Marty Berder is second with 47.
- 56:30SPEAKER_08: Who's first?
- 56:31SPEAKER_08: Tom Barrasso, 19 seasons, all assists.
- 56:37SPEAKER_08: 40 48 assists over 19.
- 56:40SPEAKER_08: That's almost four points a year.
- 56:42SPEAKER_08: Actually, it's a little, it's it's basically four points a year.
- 56:44SPEAKER_08: That's okay.
- 56:45SPEAKER_08: I mean, as a defenseman, he's leading the rush.
- 56:49SPEAKER_08: So it's one-nothing, right?
- 56:51SPEAKER_08: One-nothing.
- 56:52SPEAKER_08: Uh yeah, and we it was this question three.
- 56:54SPEAKER_03: This is question three.
- 56:55SPEAKER_08: Question three, one-nothing.
- 56:56unknown: Okay.
- 56:57SPEAKER_03: So uh who leads the NHL all time?
- 57:04SPEAKER_03: Total shots on that.
- 57:10SPEAKER_08: Uh total shots shots on goal, all-time leader, Ray Bork.
- 57:16SPEAKER_03: Oh, well that's uh so Ray Bork had six thousand two hundred and seven.
- 57:26SPEAKER_08: He never saw a shot he didn't like.
- 57:28SPEAKER_03: How many times do we say in practice?
- 57:30SPEAKER_08: Shoot the puck.
- 57:31SPEAKER_03: Shoot the puck.
- 57:32SPEAKER_03: Get the puck today.
- 57:34SPEAKER_08: I was in uh the old Maple Leaf Gardens.
- 57:38SPEAKER_08: Uh, some buddies of mine uh and I, we drove up to Toronto uh over spring break to went to the Hall of Fame, saw a Boston Bruins Toronto Maple Leaf game.
- 57:46SPEAKER_08: I saw, you know, Ray Bork, you think he's gonna score from the blue line?
- 57:50SPEAKER_08: I saw him score from below the goal line.
- 57:52SPEAKER_08: He was shooting from everywhere.
- 57:54SPEAKER_08: There was no shot he didn't like.
- 57:55SPEAKER_08: So all right.
- 57:57SPEAKER_08: I'm gonna I'm gonna I'm gonna so so in honor of the defenseman out there, here's a here's a defenseman question.
- 58:04SPEAKER_08: Uh every defenseman question starts with this name.
- 58:07SPEAKER_08: Bobby Orr holds the record for most Norse trophies won with eight.
- 58:12SPEAKER_08: Two players in the history of the NHL have won seven.
- 58:15SPEAKER_08: Can you name one of them?
- 58:17SPEAKER_08: And I'll give you two points if you name them both.
- 58:20SPEAKER_03: Two players have won seven seconds.
- 58:31SPEAKER_08: On the board, folks, it's two to one for sure.
- 58:33SPEAKER_08: Can you can you name the second to steal a point?
- 58:48SPEAKER_03: That's not Ray Bork.
- 58:49SPEAKER_08: No, it's not Ray Bork.
- 58:50SPEAKER_08: It's not Ray Bork.
- 58:51SPEAKER_08: Ray Work won uh three Norris trophies, actually.
- 58:55SPEAKER_08: Doug Harvey from way back when the original.
- 58:59SPEAKER_08: Well, the thing about the thing about Bobby Orr, um Brad Park, Hall of Fame defenseman, has the most runner-up Norrises.
- 59:08SPEAKER_08: The eight eight Norris trophies that Bobby Orr won.
- 59:12SPEAKER_08: Brad Park won those runner-up six times.
- 59:20SPEAKER_08: Yes, please.
- 59:21SPEAKER_08: So we're on to question four.
- 59:23SPEAKER_08: The score is two to one in favor of Coach Jared.
- 59:26SPEAKER_08: Is it two to yeah?
- 59:27SPEAKER_08: Two to one, two to one, two to one.
- 59:28SPEAKER_08: Question four.
- 59:30SPEAKER_03: Uh so uh this one's kind of fun, uh I think.
- 59:34SPEAKER_03: Um this is a fun fact for all the kids.
- 59:42SPEAKER_03: So this is going back way way back in the day.
- 59:46SPEAKER_03: Early in the history of four hockey four rubber was used.
- 59:52SPEAKER_03: What did manufacturers occasionally use to form hockey pucks?
- 59:59SPEAKER_07: Before rubber was used, they what they use for hockey pucks?
- 1:00:09SPEAKER_04: Bone?
- 1:00:11unknown: That's a good guess.
- 1:00:20SPEAKER_08: Oh, gross.
- 1:00:21SPEAKER_08: Come on.
- 1:00:23SPEAKER_08: So cow cow patties, huh?
- 1:00:27SPEAKER_08: That's impossible.
- 1:00:28SPEAKER_08: All right, we're it's two to one.
- 1:00:29SPEAKER_08: This is the fourth question for Coach Drew.
- 1:00:32SPEAKER_08: Um, I think you can we can still technically tie.
- 1:00:36SPEAKER_08: Math is undefeated.
- 1:00:37SPEAKER_08: You have to get this one right, though.
- 1:00:39SPEAKER_08: You have to get this one right.
- 1:00:41SPEAKER_08: All right, here's one.
- 1:00:42SPEAKER_08: All right, I'm gonna just because I want to go to overtime, because that's the kind of guy I am.
- 1:00:47SPEAKER_08: I'm gonna give you one that that you that you won't be able to show your face around town if you can't answer this question.
- 1:00:54SPEAKER_08: Let's hear it.
- 1:00:55SPEAKER_08: Who scored the fourth and final goal of the Blues 2019 Stanley Cup finals in game seven versus the Bruins?
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_08: We're tied at two.
- 1:01:10SPEAKER_08: Are we tied at two?
- 1:01:11SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 1:01:11SPEAKER_08: Yeah, we're tied at two.
- 1:01:12SPEAKER_08: It's question five, tied at two.
- 1:01:15SPEAKER_08: Mountain on the line.
- 1:01:21SPEAKER_04: I have I don't know what to say, man.
- 1:01:23SPEAKER_03: I don't know what to say.
- 1:01:51SPEAKER_03: Did Gordy Howe actually achieve during his NHL career?
- 1:01:57SPEAKER_05: Two.
- 1:02:00SPEAKER_02: I had that same question on your actually.
- 1:02:03SPEAKER_08: My I'll I'll I'll share this question with everybody at home.
- 1:02:06SPEAKER_08: So this question is um a Gordy Howe hat trick is a fight, an assist, and a goal in the same game.
- 1:02:12SPEAKER_08: Gordy Howe had two in his career who had the most.
- 1:02:16SPEAKER_08: This isn't your question.
- 1:02:17SPEAKER_08: Oh, yeah.
- 1:02:18SPEAKER_08: But this I asked that same question.
- 1:02:19unknown: I love it.
- 1:02:20SPEAKER_08: Okay, so uh so I'm up three, two.
- 1:02:23SPEAKER_08: I'm up three, two.
- 1:02:24SPEAKER_08: Your final question.
- 1:02:26SPEAKER_08: Gonna we're gonna go to overtime.
- 1:02:28unknown: Let's see.
- 1:02:29SPEAKER_08: That's my question for you.
- 1:02:30SPEAKER_08: Let me see here.
- 1:02:31SPEAKER_08: Let me see.
- 1:02:31SPEAKER_08: What I gotta get my question here.
- 1:02:34SPEAKER_08: Okay, are you ready?
- 1:02:37SPEAKER_08: Yeah, okay.
- 1:02:39SPEAKER_08: Gonna give a little, we've talked about goalie's a defenseman way too much.
- 1:02:43SPEAKER_08: Gonna give some love to uh the goal scorers out there.
- 1:02:46SPEAKER_08: Of course, this could be a defenseman, you never know.
- 1:02:50SPEAKER_08: What player in NHL history holds the record for most goals per game, minimum 200 games played, with an astounding 0.762 goals per game average in his career?
- 1:03:05SPEAKER_08: 0.762.
- 1:03:06SPEAKER_08: So he like he's scoring in more than three out of every four games.
- 1:03:18SPEAKER_03: Say again, give me a question on the next time.
- 1:03:21SPEAKER_08: What NHL player holds the record for the most the highest goals per game average in the history with a minimum of 200 games played at.762 goals per game.
- 1:03:34SPEAKER_08: Ladies and gentlemen, please come out to Brentwood August 14th to see Coach Drew B Mountains.
- 1:03:43SPEAKER_08: You were very close.
- 1:03:44SPEAKER_08: Mary Lemue is two.
- 1:03:46SPEAKER_08: Mike Bossey.
- 1:03:48unknown: Oh my god.
- 1:03:49SPEAKER_08: Mary Lamue is 0.754, Mike Bossey 0.762, one of my favorite players growing up.
- 1:03:56SPEAKER_08: I mean, Denny Pottman, Mike Bossey, Brian Tracey.
- 1:03:59SPEAKER_08: Um, that was fun.
- 1:04:00SPEAKER_08: That was fun.
- 1:04:01SPEAKER_08: I had one thing I wanted to share with everybody.
- 1:04:03SPEAKER_08: It's not necessarily a trivia question, but I was as I was doing research, I thought this was interesting.
- 1:04:08SPEAKER_08: Yeah, um, arguably, the biggest trade in the history of all of sports was uh 1988, Wayne Gretzky to LA.
- 1:04:18SPEAKER_08: And if you've ever seen these trade trees and how the assets move around over the years, when was the final asset in the Wayne Gretzky trade finally put to rest?
- 1:04:30SPEAKER_08: The final, like the branch of that tree was finally cut off.
- 1:04:36SPEAKER_03: So that trade was 88.
- 1:04:37SPEAKER_07: 88.
- 1:04:47SPEAKER_08: I'm not even asking who, I'm just saying what year was the final was the final asset like moved.
- 1:05:01SPEAKER_08: 2022, September 13th, 2022.
- 1:05:06SPEAKER_08: Let me read this to you.
- 1:05:07SPEAKER_08: So this is the Marty McSorley branch of the Gretzky trade because McSorley was part of this trade.
- 1:05:12SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 1:05:12SPEAKER_08: So in 1996, Los Angeles trades Marty McSorley to the New Jersey Devils for Matias Nordstrom, Ray Ferraro, Ian Le Perrier, Nathan Lafayette, and a draft pick.
- 1:05:22SPEAKER_08: That's a big haul for Marty McSorley.
- 1:05:24SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 1:05:25SPEAKER_08: In 2007, Matias Nordstrom, again, this is he was a rookie in 96.
- 1:05:32SPEAKER_08: This is only this is this is 11 years later, traded to the Dallas Stars for Yaroslav Modry, Johan Fonson, and a 2007 second round pick and a 2008 third round pick.
- 1:05:45SPEAKER_08: These picks are what keep this thing going.
- 1:05:47SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 1:05:48SPEAKER_08: The 2008 draft, the Kings used the two the 2008 third round pick to select defenseman Jong Young Kim, who never signed.
- 1:05:58SPEAKER_08: However, the Kings had played.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_08: Previously flipped the other assets to acquire goalie Ben Bishop.
- 1:06:05SPEAKER_08: In 2017, Los Angeles trades Ben Bishop to the Dallas Stars for a 2017 fourth round draft pick.
- 1:06:13SPEAKER_08: In the 2017 draft, the Kings used that fourth round pick to draft Marcus Phillips.
- 1:06:19SPEAKER_08: March 21st, 2022, the Kings trade Marcus Phillips to the Winnipeg Jets for Nelson Nojier.
- 1:06:26SPEAKER_08: And on September 13th, 2022, Nojier leaves North America and signs in the KHL, officially making him the final active asset and closing the trade 12,453 days later.
- 1:06:42SPEAKER_08: Greatest trade of all time.
- 1:06:43SPEAKER_08: I don't know if there's a trade, not to mention, I think they were they gave him$15 million cash too.
- 1:06:47SPEAKER_05: Oh yeah.
- 1:06:49SPEAKER_08: But uh so ladies and gentlemen, uh I think it's uh safe to say that on Friday, August 14th, if you're not doing anything uh around four o'clock and you're in the St.
- 1:07:01SPEAKER_08: Louis metro area, even though Grant can't find it because it's in Brentwood, head up to Brentwood and go to the Brentwood ice rink and we'll see Coach Drew paying his debt of uh mountains.
- 1:07:11SPEAKER_08: He's got a week now to train.
- 1:07:35SPEAKER_08: Thanks again to Chris Derso from Missouri Hockey for joining us.
- 1:07:38SPEAKER_08: Thank you to Vanage Credit Union.
- 1:07:40SPEAKER_08: Hey, we don't like your bank either, Vanage Credit Union, where St.
- 1:07:43SPEAKER_08: Louis goes to bank.
- 1:07:45SPEAKER_08: Um tune in next week.
- 1:07:47SPEAKER_08: We've got uh folks from USA hockey joining us, and uh your parents stay calm, take a deep breath.
- 1:07:55SPEAKER_08: It's just hockey,
